Signs of good times to come Spring is definitely my favourite season. It really lifts the spirits to see the daffodils, primroses and other spring flowers brightening up our city. On top of all that, we have enjoyed an early taste of summer with some fantastic weather in April. On some days Plymouth was actually hotter than Spain, which brought out the crowds onto the Hoe and waterfront. There can be few better places to enjoy the warm weather than the Hoe and Barbican and we can now look forward to a host of special events there in the coming months. May sees the return of the popular Pirate Weekend in the Barbican as part of a month-long programme of activities under the banner of the Plymouth History Festival. Then in June we can look forward to Armed Forces Day and Lord Mayor’s Day. It gets even better in July with another MTV Crash, the date of which has been announced as Wednesday July 22. Tickets were being snapped up in their thousands as they went on sale in April. The great news is that MTV Crash was so successful last year that it will be coming to Plymouth every year until at least 2017. And there’s more. August is always a stellar month in the city with the British Firework Championships, this year with the added attraction of a breath-taking display by the worldfamous Red Arrows, followed later in the month by Flavourfest which just gets bigger and better every year. These are just some of the highlights. There will be literally dozens of other events across the city during the next few months so keep checking on our in-depth What’s On guide for the latest news. There’s a whole bunch of interesting features in this month’s edition - including an exclusive interview with BBC TV presenter Simon Reeve. Hope you enjoy this month’s issue! Becky and Kat happy to be tied up with Bow Events What started as a one-off charity fundraiser last summer has turned into a thriving events business for friends Becky MacLean and Kat Porter. The women, who live three doors apart in Plympton, set up Bow Events the very next day after organising a charity ladies’ night to raise money for two local causes. “It was great fun, we loved it,” said Becky, who teaches French and Spanish three days a week at Ivybridge Community College. The event at Cottle’s Lodge in Plympton on 29 August raised £750 for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Derriford Hospital and Plymouth-based Little Things, which makes ‘angel gowns’ for babies who die very prematurely. Becky explained: “We had a Facebook page called Plympton Mums and we thought it would be really nice for us to get together and raise money for these local charities. It went really well. We had lots of little stalls and we were very pleased with the money the event raised.” The next morning, Becky and Kat set about launching Bow Events. Kat said the idea is to give local people the chance to showcase and sell their work: “There are a lot of really talented people – artists, craftsmen and women, cakemakers – but they don’t have an outlet.

“Our events give them an opportunity they might not otherwise have. And it’s not just that they’re getting an outlet; they’re also benefiting from the marketing that we do on our website, on Facebook and on Twitter.” Becky added: “We organise each event so that there is a variety and everyone has a fair chance on the day. That’s an assurance we can give anyone who wants to take a stall at one of our events.” While some of the events are for hand-made arts and crafts only, others are thrown open to tradespeople in the gifts market, too. And after listening to feedback, Becky and Kat are now also holding brocante pre-loved wedding sales. People can purchase and staff their own stall space or they can leave an item for Becky and Kat to include in the event for a 10% fee. Venues include Boringdon Park, Elfordleigh, Plymouth Guildhall, Plymouth Argyle FC, Grosvenor Casino, the Holiday Inn, The Woolwell Centre and Tavistock Town Hall. In the first six months, Becky and Kat organised almost 20 events and they have a similar number lined up between now and the end of 2015. “We are amazed and very proud about how quickly it’s all got off the ground,” said Becky. Each year, Bow Events will be supporting a local charity. In 2015, it is St Luke’s Hospice, which is close to Becky’s heart: “St Luke’s was brilliant when my Nan was there a few years ago and I wanted to give something back. Each stall-holder is asked if they would like to provide something for a raffle, with the proceeds going to the charity.” One of the big driving forces behind the two women is the desire to do the very best they can for their children. “We’re just two mums trying to make life as good as possible for our kids,” said Becky. “This must come through in our dealings with people because we’ve had some lovely feedback. People also like that we’re not distant; we are local and approachable. If you email us, you’ll get a reply really quickly.” Each have two young children and Kat is expecting a third youngster in May: “Thankfully the children love what we’re doing,” she said. “And we’re also very lucky with the support we get from our husbands. Our business is very much a family affair, everyone mucks in and helps.” Becky and Kat have high hopes for Bow Events in the longterm as Kat explained: “It would be great to have branches of Bow Events around the country, like a franchise. We have relatives in other parts of the country and it’s something we’ve already started to talk about.” In the meantime, Becky says they’re happy to be organising events locally: “We’re making so many friends through this. It might be keeping us very, very busy but we’re having a lot of fun doing it!” To book a stall or to find out about forthcoming fairs and events, contact Bow Events or visit the website or Facebook page for updates.

TRAVEL MATTERS

Simon Reeve s the world can h

TV adventurer Simon Reeve has described our impact on the planet as a “tragedy and an immorality” and says that travel has a major role to play in helping to protect the earth’s most important eco-systems.

Simon, presenter of several BBC series including the acclaimed ‘Caribbean’ which aired in March and April, was speaking exclusively to the Plymouth Magazine ahead of an event for invited guests organised by Peter Goord Travel. Simon, who lives on Dartmoor, has visited over 110 countries and says that in recent years he has noticed damaging changes: “We are destroying our world and I think that’s a tragedy and an immorality,” he said. “I worry on a daily basis about what will be left for my son let alone my grandchildren. In the time I have been Anthony Goord and SImon Reev travelling I’ve seen the world changing. I’ve seen the seas emptying a bit; I’ve seen coral reef dying off; I’ve witnessed massive pollution and overpopulation on land. I have seen the great issues that we are facing.” Simon says that tourism is helping in many parts of the world: “I think that in a lot of places around the world now, travellers are the only thing keeping some precious ecosystems alive. By that I mean that when tourists go to a national park in Africa, let’s say, or a marine protected area off South America or South East Asia, they are paying an entrance fee which contributes to the upkeep of that park or that sanctuary. “If tourists don’t go, then that area will be logged, deforested or destroyed or the fish in those seas will be annihilated. So these are really positive ways that travellers can make a difference to support fragile eco-systems and biodiversity on our planet. I think it’s an absolute responsibility for all of us. And for the individual traveller, it only makes their experience more rewarding if they don’t just sit by the swimming pool but get out and explore the national parks.” The Peter Goord Travel event at the National Marine Aquarium was a chance for some of the agent’s Kuoni

travellers to meet Simon and hear of his most recent adventure to the Caribbean. The series took him to stunning beaches and coral seas. He also saw exotic wildlife and went off the beaten track to meet indigenous people and learn of their culture. As ever, it was a ‘warts and all’ series so he and his three crew members also visited some of the poorest and most violent spots in the world and met inmates at a notorious prison. “I generally like it when exciting things happen,” said Simon. “That’s one of the things that I love about these journeys we do.” Simon has some top tips for making the most of your overseas trip, even if you’re a slightly nervous traveller: “There are two conflicting human emotions and desires going on in some ways,” he said. “There’s a natural fear of the unknown but then there’s also that desire that so many of us have to see what’s over the other side of the hill. “One of the great surprises to me on doing these journeys, right from the beginning really, has been just how relatively safe and welcoming Planet Earth is. So get away from the resort and have memorable experiences and encounters with local people. See a little bit of their world. Be friendly. It’s about building up a richer picture of life for our brothers and sisters on this planet and that just makes for a more rewarding travel experience.” So where can these great experiences be found? “Every part of the planet has amazing things to offer, but I would

say Mozambique, The Maldives, Haiti, Jamaica, Australia – to name but a few. I’m also a massive fan of Greece and so is my wife, Anya. It’s more exotic than people realise. It has great little islands, amazing harbours, warm seas and beautiful food. I love it there.” Simon added: “What I love about travel is coming across a completely different landscape which makes you go ‘wow, what a beautiful world it is’. I get that when I drive across the moor in Devon. I love mountains and I can’t wait to take my four-year-old son Jake on his first climb, which will be on one of the tors on Dartmoor!” www.cornerstonevision.com

Pinnacle of artistic talent on the Barbican

I was surprised and pleased to discover that the paintings I’d been admiring the night before in the popular Zuzimo restaurant on the Barbican were in fact Yvonne’s work! The bright and bold pictures had drawn my eye and while the people I was with went to our table, I’d wandered off to study the art. The images went under the name of ‘The Art of Eve’ so I didn’t realise the lady I was meeting up with the following day was one and the same. Yvonne has been painting for about By 40 years, but gave it up to raise her family and to look after grandchildren. She decided to take it up again a few years ago to auction paintings at line dances for Help for Heroes. She enjoys using strong colour and is influenced by holidays abroad to places like St Lucia and Mexico. I asked her all about the art collective she is part of. She told me: “I originally set up Pinnacle Arts to get other people who have skill with a craft or other artists involved in a fortnightly craft fayre at Sutton Harbour. “The idea was to enable them to show their work. It can be very difficult for artists to get out into the market place if you are not well known. So it all started as a group of us with a common purpose. Unfortunately the footfall on that lovely waterfront location meant that it wasn’t busy enough so now several of us share this space in The House That Jack Built. “It probably isn’t big enough as we are only able to get half a dozen of us in but it is a start!”

Most of her pieces are made from precious stones and she is a great supporter of sending donations to the equal world from her sales. Waterfront re-opens after £1m restoration One of Plymouth’s most popular watering holes has re-opened more than a year after it was almost destroyed by one of the fiercest storms in living memory.

Waterfront’s Steve Bellman pictured with manager Nathan Plester

The Waterfront Pub and Eating House took a huge battering from the waves which took most of the fixtures and fittings back out to sea with them. The sheer weight of the water that pulverised the Waterfront led many experts to conclude that the St Austell Brewery owned business was beyond repair. However a year on, after dogged determination and a mammoth £1 million repair bill, the Waterfront re-opened at the end of March. Commenting on the long road to its recovery St Austell Brewery’s estate Overwhelmed by the elements...the Waterfront director Adam Luck, who oversaw the pictured during last year’s storms efforts to rescue the old building, said:

“We were devastated when the Waterfront was destroyed in last year’s storms and had to consider a number of options for the Grade 2 listed premises before deciding that the only proper course of action was to rebuild it and create a stunning new venue that reflects its historic and unique location.” Taking the helm at the newly restored Waterfront are experienced publicans John Milan and Steve Bellman, who together have been responsible for the success of one of • continued on next page

• continued from previous page Cornwall’s most iconic public houses, the multi-award winning Pandora Inn near Falmouth. John has been a publican for more than 30 years and he and Steve have worked together for 16 years, running a small portfolio of pubs and inns. The Waterfront is the sixth in their stable, three in Cornwall and three in Devon. Steve said: “John, myself and the team are incredibly excited to have taken over such a landmark destination venue and we look forward to bringing a little of the successful formula we employ at the Pandora to Plymouth.” The Pandora has won a host of tourism awards and is one of only five pubs in this year’s Visit England tourism awards final. Steve said: “We believe that the Waterfront can become a tourist attraction in its own right. It is in a stunning location and, like the Pandora, relies heavily on outdoor dining and drinking.” The refurbished Waterfront has 170 covers inside and a further 120 outside. “The Waterfront has had a difficult few years, but we believe we have developed a successful formula which can restore it to its rightful place as one of the most popular venues not only in Plymouth, but also the South West.” Steve emphasised that the Waterfront is a pub with dining, offering a menu which features pub classics such as fish and chips and burgers as well as dishes for the more discerning diner. Steve said that they have placed a major emphasis on

sourcing local produce and drinks. “We did our market research locally and found that there was definitely an opening for an establishment which focused on food, beers, wines and spirits primarily sourced from Devon and Cornwall.” He said that the Waterfront offered an unrivalled range of ales, ciders, craft beers, guest beers and local wines and spirits. John and Steve have recruited a 30-strong team at the Waterfront led by manager Nathan Plester and head chef Matthew Norton. Nathan has nearly 20 years’ experience in the trade, while Matthew has worked at a number of high profile Plymouth eateries over the last seven years. “We expect to take on more staff in the coming weeks to cope with the increased trade during the coming months. We had planned a fairly low-key opening but the beautiful weather in April meant that we were rushed off our feet on some days,” said Steve. The Waterfront is open from 10am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 10.30pm on Sunday. Food is served

from 10am, starting with coffee, cake and cream teas with a full menu available from 12 noon to 9.30pm six days a week and 9pm on Sundays. Saturday brunch is served from 10am to 12 noon and a traditional Sunday lunch from 12 noon. The Waterfront’s menu offers something for all tastes and budgets with starters from £4.75, light bites at £9 and mains from £11.50. Daily specials are also offered along with a selection of sandwiches from £5.50. Many of the dishes are gluten free and there is plenty of choice for vegetarians. St Austell Brewery managing director James Staughton said: “We were delighted when John and Steve agreed to take over the Waterfront, giving Pan-seared gurnard fillets with charcuterie them their first venue in dressing, french beans and new potatoes Plymouth. “We are really excited to be opening at a time when Plymouth is enjoying such a strong resurgence and look forward to welcoming old and new customers. July 17 to 19 PLYMOUTH REGATTA For competitors, sailing in the Port of Plymouth is hard to beat. The more sheltered conditions inside Plymouth Sound soon give way to the open sea but still with minimal tidal influences, making the waters off Plymouth perfect for close, competitive racings. 2015 is promising even more than before both afloat and ashore – three national championships are being staged within the regatta and the shore side activities in the marquee will be bigger and better than last year, definitely not to be missed

Thrills and spills Speedway racing arrived in the UK in 1928, although at that time it was known as dirt track racing, coincidentally the year that Pennycross Stadium in Ham drive first opened for greyhound racing. Speedway racing arrived in Plymouth in 1931 and a track was constructed inside the existing greyhound racing track and racing was held on Saturday afternoons, the opening match was against a team from Exeter but Plymouth was considered an outpost by most riders and there was a problem recruiting a competive team. It seems that the nature of roads in the south west was an issue even then. The Plymouth team were initially known as the Tigers and although the track opened they only raced a series of challenge matches against what were then Southern League teams the opening being too late to join the league for that year. 1932 was the first year of League racing in Plymouth and the machines used came from a great variety of the UK motorcycle manufacturers, the principle manufacturers to benefit were Rudge and Bristol based Douglas, plus Harley Davidson currently these vintage bikes change hands for over £30,000, it was the basis of the adage, win on Saturday and sell on Monday. Plymouth speedway promotions have always suffered from the perception that its a long way to come but these days with the A38 expressway and the M5, Plymouth is a lot more accesible than say Eastbourne and Ipswich. The war interrupted racing and when it resumed after the war the promotion was part of a multi track promotion company headed by a gentleman called Jimmy Baxter, he also promoted at Liverpool and Southampton, because the

s at Plymouth Devils speedway Southampton team were known as the Saints he decided that Plymouth needed a contrarian name to balance things, hence Plymouth became the Devils . Speedway went through a period of crisis during the mid 50s and speedway ended at Pennycross apart from some open meetings run by the larger than life Trevor Redmond who also ran summer meetings at St Austell and a few Festival of Speed combined car, sidecar and solo bike meetings at Pennycross on Bank Holiday Mondays. In 1960 the Bristol promoter Eric Salmon ran two meetings at Plymouth in September and later it was announced that the Bristol team would be moving to Plymouth, after Knowle Stadium was sold for housing. The team were renamed the Bulldogs for that one season and even today there are people in Plymouth who maintain that season never happened despite Plymouth finishing n

their highest league position ever, that year was also marked by the emergence of the Cornish Chris’s Julian and Blewett who brought fun, laughter and some of the wildest riding seen at any track ever. Chris Julian later was involved in building gyrocopters and tragically was killed in a flying accident. The track lay fallow from 1963 to 1968 when the Exeter promotion reopened Plymouth in the second division and closed finally in 1970 when Plymouth City council who now owned the stadium, sold it for building. The current Plymouth track is located at The St Boniface Arena in Coypool Road and by a combination of the track shape and good preparation sees some of the most exciting racing in the UK, there are people who live in Halifax, Coventry and even Berwick who regularly travel to Plymouth because of the quality of the racing, indeed a lady from Berwick used to regularly travel to Plymouth using her free Bus Pass and a good knowledge of bus timetables. The 2015 team again has an international flavour with riders from the Czech Republic, Denmark, USA, Cornwall and the UK and not forgetting the Metroplis that is Puddletown. The Devils have a mixture of experience and young enthusiasm and are hoping for an injury free and fun season. If you have never been to speedway it is an evening out that has to be over by 9.45pm so its not too late for the children and parking is available at the Park and Ride car park: there is even time to do the weekend shop at nearby Sainsbury’s because its open until 11pm.

WHAT’S ON

Exhibitions and Other Events

Delamore dishes up artistic delights for May exhibition exhibitions in the region. ‘It’s Delamore, so it must be summer,’ was an overheard remark by a visitor to an earlier exhibition, reflecting the fact that May coincides with the blossoming of the spectacular shrubs and plants in Delamore’s historic garden. Each year Delamore bring together over 120 painters and sculptors, striving to not only attract pre-eminent artists of the day, but also to provide the Ceramic work by opportunity for young Helen Nottage Mexican Day of the and new artists to display Dead Skull and sell their work.

Delamore Arts and Sculpture Exhibition takes place annually, every day in May. Based in a traditional Dartmoor agricultural estate house and gardens at Cornwood near Ivybridge, the exhibition presents the largest collection of artists’ work in one place in the South West. Extensive gardens featuring ancient Rhododendrons and Azaleas are at their best in May creating a vibrant and exciting backdrop to one of the finest sculpture

One of the Delamore sculptures

Many early Delamore artists have since become highly successful in their own right. The mix of styles and range of prices is what gives Delamore a unique and friendly aspect to viewing art, with the added incentive that each piece sold helps support a worthy cause. This year’s chosen charity is the Erme Valley Branch of Riding for the Disabled. This year sees the further development of Delamore’s woodland arts trail which passes the largest cromlech (prehistoric monument) on Textile art by Devon-based Jackie Gale

Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte on board. Napoleon had been defeated at Waterloo and surrendered himself into the care of the Royal Navy. The lengthy and costly Napoleonic Wars were over – but what to do with Napoleon now? During the wars, ‘Boney’ had been portrayed as a ‘monster’ and ‘disturber of the peace’ – yet he was a folk-hero to the lower classes of all nations, even those he fought against. The exhibition will explore the differing perceptions of Napoleon on his journey to Plymouth. It will also look at the ship (commonly known as the ‘Billy Ruffian’) and the scenes in Plymouth Sound. Why did so many people flock to see Napoleon? Were they curious or sympathetic? Was he a celebrity or a threat?

HEALTH MATTERS

How seeing the iCapsule light can boost your health

Climbing into the South West’s one and only Far Infrared iCapsule is a little bit like entering a 1970s disco: there are bright lights everywhere and you can feel the temperature gradually rising. I have to admit, I felt like dancing. But there the similarities ended; instead of music and frantic energy, there was peace and total relaxation for a full 30 minutes. Plus, you get to lie down rather than be on your feet. The iCapsule has been brought to the South West by Louise Brown, whose business, My Body Boost, is part of Soft Soles Health & Beauty clinic. The team has just moved into a new location in Segrave Road – on the other side of Outland Road, opposite Home Park – and already, the iCapsule is turning heads. So how exactly does the iCapsule work? And what is Far Infrared (FIR) light? Discovered in 1800, FIR is an invisible spectrum of sunlight. Its health benefits have always been recognised. The problem is that we don’t get enough of it. These particular rays are absorbed to a cellular level. By stimulating cellular metabolism, the rays increase the body’s ability to regenerate and repair. They are also a powerful detoxifier. Far Infrared light is used to help with sports injuries, aches and pains, arthritis, insomnia, stress, low energy and poor circulation. It’s also an effective mood enhancer for people who might be feeling low of suffering from seasonal affective disorder (SAD). As an added bonus, lying in the capsule burns hundreds of calories each time. The US space agency NASA has led the global research into FIR, which they use to ensure that astronauts get enough of it while they are in space. Athletes also get ‘top ups’. The wavelengths of light from the other colours – called PDT light therapy – act by penetrating the skin at varying depths. The light energises cells to produce collagen, improve elasticity and increase blood circulation and oxygen, while releasing toxins. This has the effect of stimulating the anti-ageing process and improving skin tone. It also helps to normalise cellular imbalances. When Louise bought the iCapsule it was one of only two in the UK. It’s still the only one in the South West and people from across the south of England are travelling to Plymouth to receive the infrared thermal therapy. “Far Infrared light has been known about for some time and used in Canada and Japan for years in the medical world,” said Louise. “But it’s not been marketed to the general public here in the UK. This is the first time it has been made

available in this country at a reasonable cost for everyone to benefit from. Until now you needed a medical referral or had to pay for expensive private health treatment.” Louise is getting walk-ins from people keen to give it a try: “One woman was very down. She said to me, ‘I feel so low, I’ve reached the stage that I’ll give anything a go’. Now she says she feels much better. “Another woman who has suffered from ME for 14 years found me after doing an internet search. She comes down from London and says the therapy has changed her life. “It’s an amazing thing to see. We have a lady who comes in who used to need a lot of painkillers. She had three sessions in one week and it made a massive difference. She cut right back on the painkillers. She didn’t come back for four weeks but when she did she said she felt the pain returning after three weeks. So she now comes in for a boost every three weeks. Everyone is different so it’s a case of devising a schedule that works for you. “Some people have ‘wow’ moments straight away, where they notice an immediate improvement in a condition; with others, it’s more gradual. One lady who felt tired all the time because of the menopause said ‘now I’m singing in the morning and feel so much better’. And we had a guy come in with a bad shoulder and that’s cleared up.” A one-off body boost will do the trick for some people but Louise generally recommends an initial course of six 30-minute sessions and currently has an offer for £80 for this course (or £15 for a single half-hour session). Although each of the lights targets specific conditions, Louise suggests that customers have a bit of each. She advises four sessions in the first week if possible and two in the second week, or three in each of the first two weeks. There is no need for recovery time. Clients are strongly advised to drink two litres of water each day during the course, as part of the detox. Pregnant women and those who suffer from epilepsy should not use the capsule. Louise has no doubts that the iCapsule is here to stay: “It’s a new concept for the general public at the moment so there is some scepticism but I can foresee in the future that everyone will be having Far Infrared light therapy. It’s clinically proven and it’s safe.”

I was therefore very interested in my cousin Keith’s thoughts on his recent visit to Argentina. I cheekily asked him to write about his experience of this fascinating country, the first part of which is below. This two-part journey to Argentina begins in Buenos Aires. Until eclipsed in fame in recent decades by Rio, the By Travel city was the Queen of South America Expert and it remains a fascinating urban experience. Anthony Goord The main tourist areas are The Boca, San Telmo, and the Avenida Florida but, as a result, all three have become expensive and lost much of their original charm. However, just across the great Avenida 9:de Julio (which claims to be the widest avenue in the world), lie the more authentic areas of Recolta and Palermo Soho, where less expensive accommodation can be found; although younger travellers may prefer Palermo Hollywood with its trendy boutiques and coffee shops. Through these areas runs the Avenida Santa Fe, one of the longest and busiest of the city’s main thoroughfares. Walking this vibrant avenue one passes literally hundreds upon hundreds of small shops selling just about everything, interspersed with traditional bars and restaurants. A left turn onto the equally busy Avenida Callao brings leads visitors to hundreds more. These areas have a very European feel to them and it is easy to imagine that you are in Barcelona or Milan. For more variation follow the nearby Avenida Pueyrredon where, as you approach the ONCE train station, the atmosphere created by the many street traders

Washing Machine WAE24367UK reminds you that you are, indeed, in South America. Buenos Aires also boasts many parks, especially in the Palermo district. Here, at the Campo de Polo, Argentina’s world elite polo clubs play their matches. Also situated in Palermo is the Evita Peron Museum, so if you’ve seen the musical and want to learn more it’s worth a visit. Everywhere in the centre are advertisements for tango shows but many of them are very artificial affairs, staged purely for foreign tourists and bearing little resemblance to the real thing. Seek out more local venues instead. For getting around both the small underground system and the vast number of buses are very cheap but get very crowded. Alternatively, take one of the plentiful, inexpensive radio taxis. Away from the tourist strip the average quality of restaurants is very good and eating out won’t empty your wallet. Many inhabitants of the city are of Italian origin and so

Real macho carnivores go for a parilla or asado – varieties of the full Argentine BBQ experience. Plymothians will enjoy another local speciality: empanadas. These are small pasties which come in many varieties but are traditionally filled with meat, ham and cheese, or mashed pumpkin. They are very cheap and make an excellent quick lunch or afternoon snack. To wash down your meal there are the excellent Malbec wines, while Quilmes – the local lager beer – is surprisingly good. For something non-alcoholic, tea lovers should try the national drink called yerba mate. old town of Colonia. The biggest beach resort near Buenos Aires is Mar del Plata, about four hours away by bus but if you prefer something smaller then try the neighbouring Mar de la Pampa or Piramar. South of Buenos Aires the pampa begins. This unique, hypnotic, and seemingly endless flat landscape is punctuated only by the cattle and horses of the isolated estancias (ranches). Situated about 110 miles from Buenos Aires, the town of Tandil is a good base for exploring this area. It stands next to the only hills in the region (reminiscent of a small Dartmoor) and there are excellent walks. Alternatively, some estancias offer authentic accommodation with horse riding and other outdoor activities included. However they can be expensive. Despite its bustling avenues and myriad of shops, bars and restaurants, the relaxed life-style of Buenos Aires is reminiscent of earlier times and, after New York, it is my favourite great city to visit. However, there’s much more to see in Argentina and next time we’ll explore the mountains and jungle of the north before turning south to Patagonia. The second part of Keith’s journey will be featured later in the year. Happy Holidays.

FAMILY MATTERS

There’s nothing better than home made bread! There is nothing quite like the smell and taste of homemade bread and over recent years there has been a renewed interest in making it. To buy ‘artisan’ bread can cost quite a lot but it really is cheap and easy to make yourself. And children love to help make and eat it too! This month we have made Focaccia bread. Here is the recipe to make one focaccia. You will need: √√ 500g strong white flour √√ 5g powdered dried yeast √√ 10g salt √√ 325 ml warm water √√ Flaky sea salt √√ 2 rosemary sprigs (with leaves removed and chopped) √√ 1tbsp olive oil (for dough mix and then more for drizzling before cooking) √√ Ideally a mixer with a dough hook, though you can do it by hand √√ A rectangular baking tray (approx. 26 x 36 cm)

By Liz

Crudgington of the Roundabout Day Nursery

Instructions Mix flour, yeast, salt, water and oil with a dough hook for about 10 minutes. (Or knead by hand). Leave to rise for about an hour (until doubled in size). Shape into a rough rectangle on the worktop. Press into an oiled baking tray, pushing the dough into all the corners. Leave to rise for half an hour. Pre-heat oven to its highest temperature. Before cooking use your fingertips to make holes in the dough, drizzle with olive oil, then sprinkle with the salt and rosemary. Bake for 10 minutes at the high temperature and a further 10 at about 200˚C/GM6. Leave to cool on a wire rack. This is a great one to do with children. Just a few ingredients and a lovely end result. Children really enjoy the feel of dough. And Focaccia is great because it really does need them to play with it as they prod their fingers in to make the holes!

A recent ruling by the Supreme Court has highlighted the importance of concluding the matrimonial finances on divorce. In Vince v Wyatt [2015] UKSC 14, the couple married in 1981, separated in 1984 and divorced 11 years later in 1992. During their marriage they had acquired very little in the way of income and assets. On this basis, no ‘financial order’ was made when they divorced which is not uncommon for many separating couples who are deterred from the additional costs of pursuing a “financial order” because they think it will have little significance to them where there are no assets. However, not implementing a ‘financial order’ can have consequences because it leaves the door open for one ex-spouse to make a claim against the other in the future. The Supreme Court’s recent judgement highlights that there is not currently a ‘time bar’ after which claims cannot be commenced - Ms Wyatt commenced her claim in 2011, almost two decades after their divorce was finalised. The case of Vince v Wyatt was a true ‘rags-to-riches’ story. Mr Vince founded a renewable energy firm and By Legal his personal wealth at the time of Expert the judgement was estimated to be Lauren Sayer around £60 million. His lawyers repeatedly submitted that Ms Wyatt had no claim because there had been such a delay between their divorce and her claim and argued that the Court would dismiss the claim on the basis it was invalid. The judges of the Supreme Court disagreed and unanimously ruled that she does have the right to bring a claim despite the elapse of time since the divorce. Whilst the ruling does not guarantee that Ms Wyatt will be successful in her application, the judges of the Supreme Court certainly felt that there was merit in her claim and commented that a mortgage-free property to meet her housing needs may be appropriate. This case serves as an important warning to all divorcing couples; Ms Wyatt’s ability to bring a claim was only possible because there was no ‘financial order’ when they divorced in 1992. Many divorcing couples do not realise the importance of a ‘financial order’ but the ruling of the Supreme Court means that they should sit up and take note. Although the wealth accrued by Mr Vince since the divorce was exceptional, it is entirely possible that either divorcing party will improve their financial position following separation whether it be through employment, investment, inheritance or even a lottery win. In those circumstances, would you really want the door to be left open for your ex-spouse to make a claim against your personal assets? Even if that claim was ultimately not successful, you could not avoid the stress and expense of dealing with it. That claim could be prevented by severing the financial ties you have with your ex-spouse in the form of a “financial order”. Dealing with your finances on divorce does not have to be expensive. Separating couples are often deterred by the headlines and horror stories of thousands of pounds being spent arguing about matrimonial assets. At Thompson & Jackson, we can help you conclude the matrimonial finances in the most cost efficient way possible whether that be through direct negotiations, mediation or via an application to the Court. If you are divorced or are in the process of getting divorced, make sure you have concluded the matrimonial finances.

PROPERTY MATTERS Financial adviser Ian Tandy and his wife Natalie fell in love with their seventh floor apartment overlooking Sutton Harbour the moment they first set eyes on it. It was only through a chance visit to Plymouth with a friend that led Ian to the apartment in East Quay House. “I was in Plymouth with my pal who was looking at an apartment in East Quay House on behalf of a client and rather than sit in the car waiting, he suggested I had a look as well,” said Ian, who runs IT Associates financial planning With its huge panoramic windows, dual aspect balcony and breathtaking views of Sutton Harbour, the Barbican and beyond, the apartment was everything that Ian had dreamed of. “We were not planning to move from our home in the country near Liskeard, but as soon as Natalie and I visited East Quay House a few days later we had no doubts. We put our house on the market the next day!” The couple have lived happily in the two-bed apartment in East Quay House since 2006, but decided earlier this year that it was time the kitchen needed a makeover. “We have a spacious open plan kitchen, dining area and lounge and the kitchen is very much the centrepiece,” said Ian.“It was obviously the original kitchen, but its wooden finish was becoming tired and we wanted something more contemporary.” Ian initially contacted two of the country’s major kitchen companies, but was disappointed that they were not prepared to visit the apartment to talk through Ian’s ideas on how the new kitchen should look. “All they wanted to do was jump on a computer, design the kitchen and take a hefty deposit,” said Ian. By chance Natalie was on a shopping trip in Stoke and Millbridge when she came across the Armada Kitchens showroom in Molesworth Road. Ian said: “Natalie was really impressed so I contacted Armada who were immediately responsive.” Armada’s Jon Pope was happy to visit the apartment and talk through the couple’s requirements, before preparing 3D computerised designs and a detailed estimate. “We had no hesitation in giving Armada the go-ahead,” said

Ian. “Jon fully grasped what we wanted and the whole process from start to finish was extremely professional. We were having new solid oak flooring fitted as part of the makeover so the old kitchen was removed first, flooring laid and then the new kitchen installed.” The new kitchen features white gloss handleless units with a range of built-in appliances including a new AEG electric fan oven, state-of-the-art induction hob and NEFF dishwasher and combined washing machine/tumble dryer. The original island unit was extended to provide more storage space and the latest LED underlights installed. Contrasting Tan Silestone quartz worktops were supplied and installed by Plymouth Stone to create an impressive finish to the whole kitchen. Ian and Natalie are delighted with Armada Kitchens. Ian said: “Armada organised every aspect of the installation, ensuring that the appropriate skilled trades, such as fitters and electricians were on site as needed and Jon visited every day to check on progress and deal with any teething problems. “Armada were very professional and easy to deal with. If we had a problem or issue it was sorted immediately without any hassle,” said Ian. “The kitchen was very competitively priced and represented excellent value for money.” Ian and Natalie are the latest in a long line of satisfied customers for Armada Kitchens, which was launched at the beginning of 2014 by Jon along with his colleague, James. The pair not only supply and install kitchens, but also bathrooms and bedrooms. Jon, who has lived in Plymouth for nearly 30 years, spent most of the previous 15 years selling and installing kitchens and bathrooms in Cornwall. “I decided that the time was right to think about starting a businessin Plymouth so that I could spend more time with my wife and young family. “James relocated to Plymouth from Cornwall so that we can offer customers in the city and surrounding area the benefit of our combined experience,” said Jon. They opened their showroom at 36-38 Molesworth Road alongside another local business C&R Lampshades.

The kitchen is the focal point of any home so it’s hardly surprising that people have become increasingly discerning when it comes to its look as well as its practicality. Yes, a kitchen needs to be durable and hard-wearing, but it’s great if it looks the part, too. An eye-catching work surface can make all the difference.

Plymouth Stone is about to celebrate 25 years of helping homeowners across the South West to see their vision of a dream kitchen become a reality. From your first call or visit to the showroom, to the finishing touches being applied, owner Rob Martin and his 16-strong team ensure that your work surface matches your dream perfectly. “We’ll have a chat and discuss requirements initially,” said Rob. “We can advise and make suggestions and it helps if we can see the colour of your kitchen floor and units. Some people bring samples in to us. We then assign a templater to visit your home and a week or so later, your worktops are fitted. “All we ask is that people give themselves a little bit of time at the outset because it can take four to six weeks for the templater to be assigned.” Rob is the fourth generation of the Martin & Sons family business, which was founded in 1909 as monumental stonemasons. And while that work continues next door to Plymouth Stone in Efford Road, Rob’s focus is on enhancing still further its reputation as the region’s leading provider of natural stone products for the home. Rob is passionate about his work and loves seeing natural materials being used to such stunning effect – especially granite: “Granite is special,” said Rob. “Every slab is different so you know that the granite used for your kitchen is unique. I advise people to come here and take a look at the slab, or we can send them a digital photograph of it.” All of Plymouth Stone’s granite work surfaces come guaranteed: “To me, it’s just the best stone. As long as it’s sealed properly and fitted properly, it will last a lifetime. I love it,” said Rob. An alternative is quartz, which is also popular with

customers and has a 10-year guarantee: “Quartz products are fantastic because they are heat resistant, very difficult to scratch and they don’t stain. You just wipe the quartz clean.” Rob has a number of stone suppliers – including from Italy and Turkey – and can also source material to customers’ specific requirements. Rob has seen kitchen trends come and go in the past 25 years; in 2015, the trend is for the work surfaces to be a lighter shade. In parts of Devon and Cornwall, there is also a move away from high sheen towards textured surfaces such as slate and leathered granite, which are more in keeping with older properties. As well as individual customers, Plymouth Stone also supplies kitchen shops across the South West and housing developers working on new builds. Rob explained: “Our trade and retail-based clients come back to us because of our quality and reliability. They know they can trust us. “And our private customers pass us on to their friends. We pride ourselves on our customer service and I like to think that we are nice people to deal with. Some of our customers have come back to us four or five times, when they’ve moved house or had an extension added. They like the bespoke, one-off element we can offer. “Certainly, if you’re looking to make a ‘statement’ in your kitchen, then a high quality worktop will do just that.” It’s not just stone that Rob is passionate about. As a proud Plymothian, he’s a lifelong Argyle fan and Plymouth Stone has sponsored some of the club’s home matches: “Having a positive role to play in the community is important to me,” explained Rob. As well as kitchen worktops, Plymouth Stone also provides vanity tops and wall and floor tiles. Visit the website or call Rob for more information.

GARDENING MATTERS

Take it easy with a low maintenance garden... Can a garden be both beautiful and low maintenance? The answer is a definite yes! Gardens offer a natural escape from the pressures of life – a precious outdoor space where people can relax and enjoy themselves.

Beautiful beds surround this newly installed artificial lawn

Worship Warehouse with Kerry Cole

Yet often people are too busy working in their garden to fully appreciate it. As a result many homeowners are looking at ways of minimising the upkeep. For some people life is just too busy to fit those precious gardening hours into a hectic weekly schedule. For others, who may be passionate about gardening but find that keeping on top of the mowing is getting too much. Despite the work, most people are clear about one thing: they do not want to give up their patch of green. So what are the options for a beautiful but low maintenance outdoor space? Decking is an attractive option as there are some fantastic natural-looking decking boards which are anti-slip and ecofriendly being made from recycled materials. These decks look amazingly like wood but come without the maintenance headaches. They don’t need any of the annual green-removing jobs and preservation treatments of traditional wood. Whilst the new generation composite decking is the best on the market, it has a high price tag to match. For some people it is well worth the investment as it will outlast wood by many, many years. One increasingly popular option is artificial grass. Latest manufacturing technologies mean that the new generation of landscaping grasses look very realistic. The tufts are made using a range of natural looking greens and thatch is woven into the root zone. Artificial turf provides the perfect lawn without the mowing, mud and maintenance hassle of natural grass. An annual spruce up is all that is usually required. It is an ideal solution for Plymouth gardens which are often perched on a slope, tricky to access or an usual shape. Front lawns are usually the first for a makeover as great looking grass can give instant ‘kerb appeal’ to a property, looking tidy and well-kept all year round. Specially designed to be pet and child-friendly, rear lawns are also popular as artificial grass provides an all-weather surface that can be used whatever the season. It does seem that with a careful choice of the latest products and a well laid out design, a fantastic looking low maintenance garden is easily achievable. GARDENING MATTERS WITH PLYMOUTH GARDEN CENTRE

Love the plot you’ve got - even if th So April was lovely and sunny and allowed us all to get into the garden nice and early! I can now include myself in the ‘gardeners group’ as we finally moved house and have got a garden to play with. It only took three years – I am not that fussy honestly! We have inherited a lovely garden which is full of things I am having to ask the team to identify, a wildly overgrown hedge which is actually full grown trees, terrible soil in the beds and an even worse lawn. So we have lots of problems: add to that our new puppy and it makes for an interesting, comical and slow gardening experience. Here is the garden and please meet Basil our 13 week old labrador who is available for hire if you need anything removed from the garden – especially freshly planted Osteospurmums! The first problem we encountered was a local cat. The previous house owners left us a note to say he wasn’t theirs and wished us luck in getting rid of him from the garden which he used as his toilet. They hadn’t been successful in four years. Firstly can I say I am not anti cats (I am obviously more of a dog person hence Basil) but it is a common problem in the city that we get asked about maybe 10 – 15 times a day. What are your options? Well we bought a ‘Basil’ the ultimate cat deterrent! But before he arrived we tried several things because sadly not all things work on all cats. There is ‘Scaredy Cat’ and Curry Plants. We thought the curry plants were working until we saw the cat casually wander past have a sniff and carry on as normal! Various deterrent products are available. We tried one by Neudorff and although it didn’t stop the cat passing through it did stop it from making a mess on the lawn. You have to be persistent and clean all the mess away and sprinkle the granules regularly. Another option is lots of banging on windows, running outside and Fiona and Lee’s new garden generally look rather silly which of course had no effect on the cat whatsoever! The second problem is the lawn. From a distance it looks like a grassy lawn, on closer examination it’s full of weeds and moss and bare patches. Because of Basil I wasn’t keen on lots of chemicals so we opted for an organic moss control for lawns by Neudorff. I then used a ready to use (RTU) lawn weedkiller spray to nip around and spray onto all the weeds. Once dry all these products are generally safe for pets but always read the packet and keep them out the way until the area is dry. Combined weed feed and moss killer products are also good, but need regular watering. We will then overseed where the moss has been. Here is the quick guide to treating your lawn: • Treat the lawn with a triple action lawn feed, weed and mosskiller, or the organic mosskiller.

60\

The Plymouth Magazine May 2015

‘It wasn’t me!’...Basil looks a little guilty!

• Use a spring rake to remove the weeds and moss when they have died (they will go brown or black). Give time for the product to get to the roots. • Reseed with new Johnsons After Moss by scattering over the whole lawn. • Keep the area moist until seeds establish. • The lawn can be fed again when the new grass has established which should be approximately 10-12 weeks. • Mow when necessary with mower blades set to 2 ins to help prevent moss returning. Plants Well this is where Lee and I are having whatever we fancy, but nothing poisonous to Basil. The bed has poor soil so we are digging it over with Multi Purpose Compost and some manure (especially around the roses) for some added nutrients. Lee likes natural things like ferns and more ferns and a big tree fern. Mostly he likes things which come with the question ‘where on earth are we going to put that?’ Basil could be forgiven for thinking his name is ‘no’ or ‘leave’ because as fast as Lee applies soil or plants something Basil is digging it up at the first opportunity. Here are some of our choices so far: • Calla Lillies in pots (right) to go on the decking, they look great in blue pots and we can move them around for the best light conditions and to protect them from frost • A nice chunky Lavender ‘Munstead’ planted near my rose as the scent is supposed to deter aphids so we shall see what happens • A Trachelospermum to climb the fence. It has lovely red leaves in the winter and green foliage now and will get white very fragrant flowers. • A Euryops – lovely cheerful bright yellow daisy flowers, silvery green foliage – really hard to kill and flowers for so long. We have had one outside the front of the garden centre for years. • Vinca – nice foliage and blue flowers to trail over the wall. • The Tree fern which so far is just providing Basil with something to chew on as it sits on the decking while Lee and I discuss where it’s going!

he puppy doesn’t! • Erysimum – one orange one purple. They don’t get too big, are nice and colourful and great for bees. • Campanula to go in the front wall, you see it everywhere a blue flower. • Ceanothis – variegated leaves and lovely blue flowers one of our best sellers last year. • Hellebores – again another of Lee’s choices. They are best in winter. • Pieris – good all year round foliage and colour! The main thing about gardening is that it should be fun and choose what you like. Look for general hardy non- fussy shrubs and then put lots of bedding around for seasonal and instant colour. The chapel cottage range of perennials (hardy come back every year) is excellent and offer great value for money. I will be planting a number of these to fill in the borders along with plenty of bulbs – you just dig them in and they pop up every year, ideal! Then for pots and baskets I will be using the Proven Winner bedding plants, a bit bigger, you need less to fill the pot and they are chosen for their looks and robustness. Ideal for me and the novice gardener! So whether you have a large garden or small garden you can do something with every shape and size. No garden or renting – then do everything in pots: you can take them with you if you move! So plenty of hardwork for Lee and I in the garden and training basil to be the ‘Perfect Gardener’ . Watch this space and hopefully we will be able to show you some pictures of a vastly improved garden. Feel free to email any of your pictures of projects or problems for the team to look at, to info@plymouthgardencentre.co.uk Happy Gardening - Fiona, Lee and Basil!
