Transit Way junction improvements planned Tesco has been given the green light to undertake changes at the junction of Crownhill Road and Transit Way. The plan includes re-alignment of the kerb of Transit Way, re-installation of a pedestrian crossing on Transit Way, widening of the kerb on Crownhill Road, re-alignment of the existing island, incorporation of a new pedestrian crossing and upgrading the existing pedestrian crossing. The changes are designed to increase the capacity of the junction as well as improving highway safety. Planners gave the proposals conditional approval, despite objections from CTC, the national cycling charity and the Plymouth Cycling Campaign. Both organisations were concerned about the safety of cyclists at the junction. Bill Nicholson of the Plymouth Cycling Campaign noted: “The majority of collisions involving cyclists occur when they are crushed by HGVs and other

large vehicles carrying out left turns.

“The left turn into Transit Way from Crownhill is very acute and even with the island in Transit Way we are of the opinion that HGVs turning left will do so with great difficulty and this will be compounded with a cycle lane on the left.” These views were reinforced by CTC. Their objection stated: “The junction design does not sufficiently consider the danger to cyclists from HGVs turning left. “The design has a nearside cycle lane leading up to an Advanced Stop Line. When the cycle lane on Crownhill Road was provided there was concern that its continuation up to the junction might be an invitation to cyclists to ‘undertake’ HGVs and puts themselves in a dangerous position. “So to minimise the danger, the cycle lane was moved away from the nearside to become an advisory central cycle lane. This has been successful. “The new design should take this experience into account.”

Mama Bears acquires Crownhill nursery A family run nursery group has acquired its second Plymouth nursery creating sustainable childcare places and more employment opportunities for the local area. Mama Bear’s Day Nursery group took over the former Fort View Day Nursery in Crownhill in July following the retirement of the previous owners. The move marks the 22nd nursery in the South West for husband and wife team Tony and Bev Driffield, with several in Bristol, two in Somerset and six in Devon, including the popular Mama Bear’s Day Nursery in Pennycross. The nursery which is currently rated

‘Good’ by Ofsted will offer an increased choice of sessions to both new and existing families as per the Mama Bear model.

Mama Bear’s owner Bev Driffield said: “We are delighted to have another nursery in Plymouth and we look forward to offering even more quality childcare to local families. “Our structure is very flexible with the aim of fitting around busy working parents’ lives so we’re looking forward to introducing this to families in Crownhill. “This is our smallest nursery but set in one of our largest gardens. Children benefit from a cosy home from home environment and have the opportunity to explore and benefit from an

extensive outdoor play area.

“Set in an oasis of peaceful countryside within the city, the nursery is well placed to serve families living or working nearby.” Mama Bear’s nurseries are divided into spacious age-specific play rooms for children aged three months to five years. The onsite kitchens provide healthy, balanced meals consisting of breakfast, a two-course hot lunch and afternoon tea. Fresh fruit and drinking water is available in rooms throughout the day. The nursery can be found to the right of the historic Napoleonic fort at the top of Crownhill Fort Road. Bev continued: “We really believe children thrive while with us and we strive

to prepare them for the next big step up to primary school. “If you’d like to come and take a look around our nurseries and meet with the team, we’d love to have you or if you think you could join our friendly, professional team, please get in touch.” Mama Bear’s Day Nursery is a family-run business founded in 2002. The Day Nurseries are aimed at providing children with their first vital level of education to give them a head-start when they start at primary school. More information on Mama Bear’s Day Nursery childcare and recruitment can be found at www.mamabear.co.uk or by calling Emma Ryan on 0117 9582065.

Rugby star Dan returns to Stoke Damerel to present sports achievement awards

A former student returned to Stoke Damerel Community College to present the awards as student achievement in sport was marked in style at the College’s annual Sports Personality of the Year awards in July.

The guest of honour at this year’s Rugby World Cup-themed event was Plymouth Albion player Dan Pullinger, who attended the college from 2006 until 2011, and was himself a recipient of the Sports Personality Award in his final year. He presented a variety of awards to students - including his own brother Tommy - in front of a packed assembly hall filled with family and friends and he spoke to students about his achievements and the importance of hard work and dedication. “It was quite strange to come back but a real privilege to be asked,” said Dan. “Sport at Stoke Damerel just grows and

grows. The teachers are so good - they made it really fun for me when I was a student and I know that’s what they do for the students who are here now. “It was a fantastic evening and nice to be able to present one of the awards to my own brother!” Dan’s brother Tommy was the Key Stage 4 Sports Personality male winner and was described as ‘a true asset to the school’.
PE staff said Tommy’s fellow Key Stage 4 winner, Leoneta Recica, was ‘an outstanding athlete’ who won the accolade as she ‘epitomised the perfect physical education student”. It is the thirteenth time the awards have been staged at the college and PE teacher Amy Auton, who organised the event, said it was an ‘honour’ to have Dan attend. “It was a privilege to organise such a prestigious event which showcases the fantastic sporting talent we have,” said Miss Auton.
“The students were outstanding and a real credit to the

school. They really got involved with the evening and celebrated every achievement.
“It was fantastic to see Dan Pullinger back for the first time since he was crowned winner, he has definitely inspired our students.
“Seeing him present his younger brother with his award was a brilliant moment.” Councillor for Stoke ward, Sam Davey, was also a special guest at the event which he described as ‘an inspiring and entertaining evening’. “It was a privilege to be invited,” said Councillor Davey. “The school and parents can be rightly proud of all the young people who took part. Thanks to everyone involved, especially the four students who were so

St Boniface’s team shines in reading competition

Got the travel bug? A local travel club is looking for new members who want to share their passion for travel. The Devon and Cornwall Travel Club is a not for profit organisation which was established in 1998.

A team from St Boniface’s Catholic College took on teams from eight other secondary schools in the city in a reading competition linked to the Carnegie Medal.

It has members from all backgrounds, some of whom have travelled to over 100 countries. The club is always happy to give advice or tips to inspire people to travel to new destinations.

The medal is a prize awarded to a children’s author every year and the schools took part in a shadowing event, being allocated a specific book from the shortlist.

The club organises social events across the South West, including themed travel nights, weekends away, meals, free barbecues, pub nights, walks, theatre visits and more.

St Boniface’s five strong team of Owain Garril Perkins, John Jo Kelly, Frankie Rogers, Toby Marks and Benjamin Manning were assigned the book ‘Tinder’ by Sally Gardner. Nine local secondary schools presented the shortlisted books at Eggbuckland School. All staff and students were invited to vote for the best presentation and the St Boniface’s team came third. The author who won the prize was Tanya Landman who wrote ‘Buffalo Soldier.’ Staff members Mrs Hill and Mrs Phillips helped the

self-assured as presenters.” The Key Stage 3 winners were Jay Jones and Beth Way who were described as ‘exceptional performers’ in their respective sports. Jay was congratulated for displaying ‘extreme dedication and enormous ability’ while Beth - who had just found out she was going to represent the city at the Devon Youth Games in U14 netball was called an excellent ambassador for sport; ‘able to turn her hand, and foot, to anything’. More than 150 awards and trophies were handed out during the 90-minute ceremony which Miss Auton said had been a great night.

During October, the club is staging an exhibition of travel photos at Saltash Library. Each year it produces its own Travel Club calendar with photos taken by members. Newsletter editor Tony Saunders has visited many countires including; Ethiopia and Uzbekistan, but also loves inexpensive places nearer to home such as Slovenia and Portugal.

Take the Coast Path Challenge

Special walks are being arranged in Plymouth. Photographer Eleonora Pavlovska

Plymouth people are being encouraged to take a walk on the wild side and gear up for the South West Coast Path Challenge in October. The event, backed by TV adventurer Monty Halls, aims to set a new world record for the number of times the Coast Path can be covered in one month while raising funds to protect the coastline for future generations. Walkers can create their own Challenge of one mile, five miles, 100 miles, or the entire 630 mile National Trail, every mile counts! the recommended itineraries. Alternatively participants can join one of four organised 10 mile Challenge events taking place each Saturday throughout October in all four counties through which the Coast Path travels.

Plymouth is to host a walk from Admiral’s Hard to the Mount Batten Centre on Saturday October 24. Britain’s Ocean City reveals a wealth of historic maritime heritage from a restored naval base at Royal William Yard to the Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail.

The National Trust, which this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of its coastline appeal, is the event’s charity partner. It costs at least £1,000 every year to look after one mile of Coast Path, keeping it open and accessible to the public and it needs your help!

Council acts to force sale of derelict building in Devonport Plymouth City Council is taking action to force the sale of a derelict and unsafe Grade 2 listed building which has been empty since a fire nine years ago. The council is starting enforced sale action under the Law of Property Act 1925, of a former snooker club Pot Black – also known as the Former Mechanics Institute at 18-20 Duke Street in Devonport. The action is going ahead after Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Co-operatives and Housing approved a delegated decision to use these legal powers to push the owners towards a resolution. The council has previously served owners with a Town and Country Planning Act 190 Section 215 improvement notice. No appeal was lodged and the compliance period ended in June. The owner of the building was also fined in 2010 for failing to comply with a Section 215 notice in 2009. Councillor Penberthy said: “We have had to take this action on this eyesore of a building, because all other avenues have failed. “The former Pot Black building is of historical interest but has fallen into disrepair. The interior is in a filthy state inhabited by pigeons breeding and making a mess everywhere. “Local residents have been regularly complaining about the state of the building and obstruction to the pavements over many years; we cannot continue hope that the owners will change their behaviour and need to step in for the good of residents and nearby businesses.”

City Council encourages Plymouth’s young people to reach for their future Plymouth City Council has launched a brand new learning prospectus for young people. The council recognises that high quality information, advice and guidance is vital and they have brought partners together to provide information in one place for parents and learners making choices.

Open Evening Year 4, 5 & 6 Children

In May 2014 the Council’s Cabinet set out 50 new pledges all aimed at making Plymouth a better place to live. One of those pledges was to improve the quality of careers advice for young people.

Thursday 24th September 5.00pm

Principal’s welcome at 5.00, 6.00 & 7.00pm, followed by tours

Friday 25th September 9.00am

A learning prospectus has now been created to that brings together all the different education and learning opportunities available in the city to young people between the ages of 11 to 18. Councillor Sue McDonald, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Public Health said: “We believe that all young people in Plymouth, regardless of their ability or background, should achieve their full potential and have equal access to excellent education and choice. “Since changes were made and young people are expected to participate in education or some recognised form of employment or training until the age of 18, we know that some young people are feeling confused about their options and assume, that they just have to stay in school. However this is not the case and the new prospectus will show them all the different options available to them.” The prospectus shows how qualifications and apprenticeships grow by level to help young people choose the right path for them. It’s also useful for parents as it explains all the different types of schools and colleges in the Plymouth area. Judith Harwood, assistant director for

learning and communities said: “We are absolutely committed to improving educational achievement, skills and aspirations in Plymouth and our learning prospectus is the start of developing Careers advice in a different way. “There is now a huge range of courses, programmes and preparatory training that can be accessed before young people make their final choice about their career or further education. Plymouth is really lucky that we have such a wide and varied choice of excellent programmes and training in the city.” The prospectus was officially launched by Councillor Sue McDonald along with staff and pupils from Sir John Hunt Community Sports College and Tor Bridge High. Vice principal at Sir John Hunt, Julie Bevan said: “Plymouth has such a range of

opportunities for students, the options are endless! The prospectus is a one stop shop to support students and their parents to make informed choices.”

Principal at Tor Bridge High, Liz Dunstan said: “Helping students in Plymouth to have high aspirations for their future and to be well informed as to the options available to them is key to their future success.

Plymouth City Council has run a successful Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) Programme for a number of years and this year the council wanted to recognise the achievement in a formal way, by presenting the College of Social Work Certification at a special ceremony. Newly qualified social workers have made a significant contribution to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people in the city. Passing the ASYE year recognises that practitioners have met the required national level of capability for social work practice.

It’s been worth it as it means I am now a fully qualified social worker!’ Assistant director for Children, Young People and Families, Alison Botham said: “Having a skilled and motivated workforce, committed to lifelong learning, is

essential to ensure the delivery of high quality services to children, young people and families in the city. “Passing the ASYE year allows the service and the public to have confidence in the quality of professionals working in children’s social work and we are proud to be able to present this recognition to our latest successes.” Councillor Sue McDonald,

Ford Park exhibition reflects life in Plymouth in 1915 The third exhibition at Ford Park Cemetery this year will focus on the people of Plymouth during 1915 - the year after the First World War was declared. The People of Plymouth 1915 Exhibition opens on August 8 and their will also be a public walk in connection with the exhibition. Interest in the Great War continues with stories of the battles fought and the hardships endured by the Armed Forces 100 years ago. At home the Aliens Act came into force at the beginning of 1915 and required that foreign nationals register with the police, providing details of name, address, marital status and employment. Lodging houses were required to compile a register of all foreign nationals staying at their premises. Plymouth’s local papers regularly reported on the prosecution of lodging house keepers who had failed to enter the details of their lodgers in a register and also reported on the prosecution of aliens who had either landed illegally or had failed to register with the authorities. On August 4 1915, people throughout Britain and its empire gathered for religious services and patriotic meetings to mark the anniversary of the declaration of war. In Plymouth, the day’s events began with a medal ceremony. Thousands watched as regiments and bands marched to the Hoe – the promenade becoming a mass of khaki as 5,000 soldiers assembled. In addition to providing reflections on the conflict, the exhibition offers a local perspective on the lives of some of the families of Plymouth during the second year of the Great War. The exhibition runs from August 8 to September 27 and is open Saturday and Sunday from 12.30pm to 3.30pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Entry to the exhibition is free and donations are welcome. A public walk conducted by members of the Heritage Team at Ford Park Cemetery will take place on August 16. The walk, in connection with the exhibition, will take the public around the graves of people featured in the exhibition and relate the stories of their lives. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 2pm. The walk will last approximately 90 minutes. Walk is free, donations welcome.

Box of dreams in Devonport Park past, present and future,” explained Iain, “which is why we want to preserve the unique historical significance of the building.

Dreamers may not always fit into your idea of business people, but they certainly bring colour and passion and pzazzz into everything they do, writes Karen Pilkington.

“Although we are now in pre-application talks with the City Council regarding its development we want to take into account many existing factors that help the building sit in its actual space, both in the park, and in the memories of local people.”

Local couple Iain and Jaqueline Slade are breaking the mould by proving that dreamers can bring this passion into the most innovative business ideas, strengthened by 16 years experience of running their not for profit community arts organisation, Stiltskin.

The Consultation Day was a great success – colourful, family orientated and full of enthusiasm as you would expect from such a remarkable venture.

As true creative entrepreneurs, a disused windowless box of a building in Devonport Park, which to most people looked like an eyesore, has sparked a storm of innovative and aspirational thinking to transform this derelict space. Currently they use the building to run an arts centre, one of the few in the country which specialises in children. They are acutely aware that 30 per cent of children local to the building live under the poverty line, and are passionate about offering affordable cultural opportunities to all. “We would like to not just develop the arts practice for local children, but bring in professional theatre companies to perform on an outdoor stage – actually on the roof – and use the income from that to support disadvantaged kids in developing their own creativity and voice.” Recently they ran a consultative open day to get the thoughts and opinions of as many people as have an interest on how this building in the corner of Devonport Park can continue to be transformed. The plans they are exploring with local architectural technologist Robert Bedner and his company Research +Design are remarkable in their desire to fit into the existing space. Robert has brought all his expertise from working with some famous names in architecture in Oslo, Paris, London and New York into the plans he has drawn up. He describes them as anti-iconic, meaning that the park and the natural surroundings would remain the focus and

“It’s early days still,” added Iain, “£250,000 is the total we estimate our build will cost, but initially we just need to provide the basics such as toilets and running water. Hopefully the Soap Box – our name for our box of a building that can give a voice to many – will grow to become the kind of sustainable, ecologically friendly community resource we have always dreamed of.” Dreams in the park...Robert Bedner, project designer (from Research Design), Iain Slade, business director of Stiltskin Arts and Theatre CIC and Jaqueline Slade, artistic director of Stiltskin Arts and Theatre. the building would blend in, proving that unassuming can still be beautiful.

– shockingly the tennis court pavilion was knocked down instead!

The team are working with another local expert, Peter Warm to deliver a Passivhaus workable model – so no energy bills at all to heat and cool the building.

Iain and Jacqueline clearly see something in this humble history worth putting their creative energies into. Jacqueline has written a play based on munition workers using the building, titled Canary Girls, and due to go into rehearsal this year.

Likewise, Iain and Jaqueline have researched the history of the building in depth and aim to build on the collective memories it holds rather than wipe them away and start again. Iain explained that it was originally build as a mustard gas decontamination centre for World War 2, which was thankfully never needed. It then became a cleansing and treatment area for those infected with scabies – common during and after the war, with many homes without any forms of bathrooms. After that, changing rooms for footballers using the park and then a home for a local model railway club, and saved from demolition in 1984 by an administrative error

“We’re really interested in using stories and social history to help connect young people into their world, both

Family support charity saved from closure by Big Lottery Grant A local family support charity has been saved from closure after being given a major financial boost from the Big Lottery Reaching Community fund.

Excited youngsters enjoyed their tour of the new academy

Local families see rise of new academy in North Plymouth

The scheme, Home-Start South Hams, Plymouth and Tavistock, which offers one-to-one befriending and mentoring support to families who are struggling, was facing closure at the end of this year, despite a steady increase in referrals.

“I felt very alone when my mental health support worker suggested Home-Start. “I was given a lovely lady and I was gob-smacked that there were real people who just wanted to help me. I called her my ‘Mary Poppins’ as she was so amazing. She was my rock and as a result I grew stronger and found my feet.” The next challenge faced by the scheme is recruiting new volunteers.

Andrea Chandler, scheme manager said: “Not only are we now able to guarantee our service for the next three years but the £370,000 grant means that we can expand our service to meet the demand.”

Zoe Bell, co-ordinator explained: “We are always looking for people with parenting experience who have a couple of hours a week to spare and now that we know we have a future we are very keen to hear from anyone who is interested in volunteering.

The scheme which currently offers support across the South Hams, Plymouth and Tavistock plans to extend its reach to take in Okehampton.

“It’s a great way to meet new people and even boost your CV. Our eight week (one day a week), 40 hour training courses will start in September.”

One mum who received support when suffering with depression after the birth of her second child told of the difference it made to her.

If you are interesting in finding out more about the service or volunteering contact Andrea on 01752 346039.

Over 100 visitors including children, carers and parents visited St Matthew’s C of E Primary and Nursery Academy in Derriford, ahead of its official opening in September 2015, to recognise the success of the build, see its progress and tour the facility. The event was designed to encourage ownership of the first brand new church school to be built in Plymouth for over 100 years and facilitate the development of strong and successful relationships with local families. Fifty children aged between four and 11, accompanied by their parents and carers, were led around the ground floor of the new school in groups by the construction team at Willmott Dixon and executive head teacher Andrea Smith to see first-hand the learning environment that will act as the springboard for their school careers. Hugely popular, it generated a lot of interest and was designed to ease the transition for new pupils and disseminate useful and practical information about what to expect and do on the first day of term. During the 30 minute tour, visitors walked through the modern, flexible teaching spaces, library and communal areas on the ground floor of the three storey, 34,000 sq ft academy which has been rising out of the foundations on Brest Road since building began in January. “It’s really exciting and I’m looking forward to the cooking club,” said four year old Hayden. Emma Coxon, mum of twins Grace and Harry, soon to be five, said: “The school looks amazing already! I love the sports hall and the size of the grounds around the school. The twins are very excited to join. “It was great to meet the parents and children who have supported us from the start of this project. Pupils, families and the staff will bring this fantastic learning environment to life and give it a heart,” said Andrea Smith. Currently dismantling scaffolding from all elevations of the building, the academy is now taking good shape. Landscaping works are about to begin and the transformation of the site will be complete. Willmott Dixon are on schedule to complete the internal ground floor area for the agreed phased handover of

the Sunesis Dewey pre-designed academy at the end of August. Neal Stephens, managing director of Willmott Dixon, South West and Wales said: “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to demonstrate the great advantages of our Sunesis school building, which has been constructed in record timing and ahead of the construction programme. We as a business, take delight in seeing children grow and thrive in well-designed educational buildings.“ St Matthew’s C of E Primary and Nursery Academy, part of the Diocese of Exeter, is part funded in partnership with Plymouth City Council and run by the Diocese’s St Christopher’s Primary Multi-Academy Trust (MAT). When open, St Matthew’s will provide a local Christian presence and will be an academy which has the value of compassion at its heart, uniting the newly forming community of Seaton. Its aim is to help support a sustainable linked community, provide a positive sense of place and identity; contribute to the creation of a well-connected, accessible, inclusive and safe community and provide educational and sporting facilities for the wider community to use. “Our priority from the outset has been to engage local families and keep them informed throughout the whole building process so it’s been great to finally lift the curtain on the build and let them have a peek,” said Janine Waring, chief executive officer at St Christopher’s Primary Multi-Academy Trust, to which St. Matthew’s will belong. The Church of England is committed to offering education for those of faith and no faith, serving the whole community and widening choice for parents.

The Plessey cyclists celebrate last year’s fundraising challenge

Plessey take on classic Dartmoor Tour of Britain stage for Prostate Cancer Employees from Plessey Semiconductors will replicate the Devon Stage of the 2014 Tour of Britain this September to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK. The Plymouth-based electronics manufacturer, which is leading the way in the global LED technology revolution, will take on the 105 mile challenge on Thursday, September 3 with staff and clients participating. Having raised £2,700 last year, the team of techies will tackle a modified version of the route which incorporates scheduled stops along the way. The team will start and complete near to the Plessey facilities in Plymouth on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and stop for breaks and refreshments along the route in Okehampton, Exeter, Bovey Tracy and Widecombe-in-the-Moor. We thank all involved and wish them every success with their challenge.” The cycling specialists Evans Cycles will be providing a service station to perform safety checks for all the company employees and corporate clients participating in the event. Prostate cancer currently affects 250,000 men in the UK, and kills one man every hour. While it is already the most common cancer in men, it is predicted to become the most common of all cancers in the UK by 2030. The funds raised will help to provide support and information to men and their families, fund research into the causes and treatments of the disease, and campaign to give men’s health the prominence it needs to influence others.

Mark Boulting...employers should pay above minimum wage to apprentices

Employers in Plymouth and the rest of the region are being encouraged to pay apprentices what they can afford, and not just the minimum required by law. Mark Boulting, managing director of training provider Skills Group, said employers who pay apprentices above the minimum wage recognised the value they bring to their business. He was speaking as the government prepares to increase the national minimum apprenticeship wage by 20 per cent, from the current £2.73 to £3.30 an hour this October. Mr Boulting said the increase was ‘great news’ and should make apprenticeships a viable option for more youngsters, but urged employers to treat it as a minimum starting point and not an absolute value. He said: “Good employers know that you get what you pay for, and if you want good staff you don’t offer the minimum you think you can get away with. “The labour market is a competitive place and if you want to attract and retain quality staff you need to offer a competitive package, both in terms of wages and benefits.” Skills Group currently has 181 apprenticeship vacancies in a range of sectors, of which 52 employers are offering above the national minimum apprenticeship wage. Mr Boulting added: “We encourage employers to pay what they think the position is worth, and to benchmark this against the average wages for their sector in their area. We already have a number of employers who pay £140 - £150 per week or even pay the national minimum age-related wage. “These employers recognise the value an apprentice brings to their business and are prepared to reward the apprentice for the work they do.” Plymouth Community Homes employs 13 Skills Group apprentices ranging from fenestration to customer service and business administration and pay the age-related national minimum wage as opposed to the apprenticeship minimum. Gill Martin, director for corporate and manufacturing services for Plymouth

Community Homes said: “We strongly believe that investing and recognising staff proportionately for the work they do is incredibly important, and creates a culture of pride and loyalty amongst our workforce, which helps staff retention and performance and ultimately benefits our customers. “Apprentices are an important part of our workforce – they are blank canvasses to train and mould to our specific standards, they come with open minds and enthusiasm and they bring with them fresh ideas. All vital ingredients in helping to stay in tune with what our customers

want and in touch with an ever changing society. So we believe it’s only fair that they are paid in line with the contribution we feel they make to our business. Mr Boulting added: “I would call upon employers to treat the national minimum apprenticeship wage as the ‘minimum’ to start from and not an absolute that dictates the wage you offer. Pay what you would think is appropriate for the role, and don’t forget the whole package – so include other benefits, the ongoing training and progression opportunities which, our apprentices tell me, are just as important. “Apprentices are important to a business and if you value something you will pay more for it. If employees feel valued, regardless of whether they are apprentices or not, they are happier, more satisfied and more productive. It’s basic business logic.” To find out more about taking on an apprentice, or starting out on a career path as one, contact Skills Group on 01752 332442.

Megaride and Plymouth Motorcycle Club giving support to local charities Plymouth Megaride along with members of Plymouth Motorcycle Club recently held their ‘Meet the Charities’ event at City Business Park. The Megaride is celebrating its 21st annual run on

Neighbourly fair in St Levan’s Road August 9 this year, supporting two local charities, Operation Henry and Dartmoor Mountain Rescue. Riders come from all over the country and Europe to join Megaride and support this event that meets at Lee Mill

Local charities including Shelter Box, and Morice Town Baptist Church were represented, as well as lots of things to buy from stallholders, face painting, a bungee run and a bouncy castle for the kids. SUMMER FUN AT DRAKE CIRCUS Youngsters are in for a treat in August at Drake Circus Shopping Centre, Plymouth - thanks to lots of great activities to keep them entertained at the Centre’s popular summer event.

“We aim to be a point of contact to get things done, but without being intrusive” added local businessman Cyril Steer of Dartmoor Safaris. The Fair was opened this year by Councillor Philippa Davey and had something for everyone – clearly ticking the boxes due to the crowds it attracted. There was a Dog Show put on by Prince Rock Dog Club, showing off the agility and obedience members learn at their classes (or should I say the members dogs!)

The event on the Hoe is for all the family to enjoy with different attractions for all ages from bouncy castles to facepainting for the young megariders through to XLR playing all afternoon on the stage to all the latest motorcycles from a variety of local motorcycles dealers. There is all round family entertainment from 10.30am.

Megaride organiser Ritch Bounds said: “There are not many charity events that have been running for 21 years. We bring together the motorcyclists and the general public who we greatly acknowledge have helped and supported us over the years.’

The organisers are a small group, all of whom live in the area bordering the park on either side from Alexandra Road to St George’s Terrace.

Indeed the fair is just the annual celebration of many small acts of good neighbourliness that go on throughout the year.

The event is an amazing spectacle for the people of Plymouth who line the roads from the bridges on the A38 to the Hoe to see the bikes pass by.

As the event gets bigger each year organisers are always looking for new traders for the event and they also have some attractive sponsorship deals available for local businesses.

A warm Saturday afternoon in July marked the fourth annual fair in St Levan’s Road Park organised by the local Neighbourhood Watch Group, writes Karen Pilkington.

“We formed in 2007 as a bunch of dog walkers really, “ explained Mike Blatchford, “The park was in a shocking state and it just seemed right to get together to try and do something about it.”

from 9am and leaves for Plymouth Hoe at 11.30am. The motorcycle community helps raise thousands of pounds each year for charities.

Other key members were fully involved in the Fair at the time of the photo: Trevor Green was attending the bouncy castle, Judith Hosking was running the dog show, Rebecca Martyn was busy selling raffle tickets, and Jenny Wright was helping with the cake stall

The atrium area of Drake Circus will be turned into a children’s paradise this summer, with loads of great activities to keep the children entertained. There’s everything from sushi rolling, to growing sunflowers, to balloon making, to face painting to learning circus skills at the South West’s leading shopping centre. Over nine days from August 20 to 28 around 700 children will get the chance to plant their very own sunflower. The children will be encouraged to ask mums and dads to send pictures of fully grown plants to Drake Circus on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for a chance to have their picture shown in the centre. On August 14 to16, during the Flavourfest food festival, Yo!Sushi will be helping kids learn how to roll sushi getting to grips with rice and seaweed. And on August 29 and 30, a very special treat will be The Invisible Youth Circus, who will be in the centre leading free workshops with children to learn some impressive skills.

And if that’s not enough there will be face painting (Aug 5-7), balloon animal making (Aug 17-19) and arts and The dog show and other attractions proved popular at the St Levan Road event crafts (8-13 Aug). Greg Lumley, Drake Circus Centre Director said: “We know how it can be a challenge keeping kids entertained across the “This award shows the dedication, enthusiasm, commitment and people. Nearly 1,900 ladies take part in big flagship fundraiser Nearly 2,000 pink ladies took to the streets of Plymouth for the Midnight Walk, St Luke’s Hospice’s annual fundraising flagship event. While many of the city partygoers were strolling back home in the early hours of Sunday morning July 19, there was one party that spilled out onto the streets of Plymouth, and was still going nearly at dawn! St Luke’s Hospice’s Midnight Walk saw a sea of 1,881 pink ladies with flashing bunny ears heading out for the best girls’ night out.

The party started early, before the ladies even put a toe on the start line. A big outdoor stage, live music from local 80s tribute band, Ashes to Ashes, nail and hair makeovers was just some of the entertainment taking place, all compered by Heart Radio Drive Time presenter, Olivia. A girls’ night out or a challenge, there are many reasons why the ladies come out in force to support St Luke’s. What was quite evident for the majority of women, was the opportunity to celebrate a life and to walk in memory of a treasured loved one. Powerful messages displayed on back of the Pink t-shirts reinforced the positive impact St

Luke’s has had on a local family in a time of need. The event was hosted for the second year at the University of St Mark & St John Sports Centre in Derriford and took the three, six and 12 mile routes out onto Tavistock Road, City Centre bound. With residents staying up late to cheer on the ladies outside their homes, the 12 mile ladies arrived at their half way point at Plymouth University where they were greeted with welcome refreshments, entertainment and even a pedicure for tired feet.

Great team spirit on the Walk

As the ladies cross the finish line there is a real sense of achievement and a special treat of a goodie bag packed with girlie treats and a bucks fizz Breakfast courtesy of Sainsbury’s, Armada Way.

flagging a little bit and people have been picking their spirits up and helping them along which was so nice to see. “It is a fantastic local charity and we try to do as much as we can. I feel like you are putting something back in, you never know when you are going to need St Luke’s and it is reassuring to know that they are there.”

For one family, the Midnight Walk marked the anniversary of much loved grandad, Ken Barrett as Jade Popplewell from Stoke explained: “I am walking in memory of my granddad, Ken. He had cancer and passed away when Midnight Walk was happening last year. It is a very emotional and special night for me, my mum and my other two aunties who are with me to remember such a special man and to say thank you to St Luke’s..

Six milers...Karly Wilson, Jo Heaphy, Natalie King, Tracey McCormack and Nicola Rickard

Senior events fundraiser at St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, Emma Winter said: “The atmosphere was buzzing on the night, it is so great to see the local community out in force to raise money and help create awareness for the care we provide.

Jade added: “There was such an amazing atmosphere here tonight, the party feeling before we set off and then out on the streets with people beeping their horns and cheering as they drove past us.”

Christine and Lucy from Peverell walking in memory of Dad Ronald Almond

Lisa Hayward from St Budeaux, took part in her first Midnight Walk and went straight for the tough 12 miles. Lisa said: “The hill at Estover was the hardest part of the course, but because everyone else was doing it, it gave you the motivation to keep on walking. I am walking in memory of my dad, Jeff Muckett. He was cared by the amazing St Luke’s doctors and nurses and accessed the care at his home and in Derriford Hospital

“I would like to say thank you to St Luke’s for everything you do and being there not only for Dad, but for the whole family. It means a lot and I will never forget it.” Lisa raised £150 on her walk.

where he was so well looked after by the St Luke’s Hospital Team.

Claire Watson from Plympton said: “It has been really lovely and very uplifting. Everyone is looking out for each other, there have been some people on the course

“On behalf of St Luke’s I would like to thank everyone involved, the 130 volunteers who made it possible, the University of St Mark & St John for being the perfect hosts and of course our sponsor, Princess Yachts International plc. See you next year for our 10th anniversary!” Midnight Walk is aiming to raise over £200,000 to enable St Luke’s to provide free end of life care at home, in Derriford Hospital and at the hospice. Since Midnight Walk began in 2007 15,454 ladies have walked 151,950 miles raising over £1.2 million. Next year will be the 10th anniversary of Midnight Walk and the charity is already planning a few special surprises. The Plymouth Shopper

MONEY MA££ERS with Steve Carey

It’s not all about the money The Chancellor delivered some really tough news in the summer 2015 budget speech. £12 billon of cuts in social security and £5 billion of tax increases is going to be very difficult to swallow.

It is a truth widely acknowledged that a country with a massive debt must find a way to live within its means. Failure to do anything would have eventually left us in the same position as Greece, but it doesn’t make the medicine any easier to take. Life is going to get tougher for many people in Plymouth over the next few years, and this includes business owners, landlords and ordinary folk. Not to mention another four or five years of below inflation pay rises for the public sector. Times are going to be tough for a bit longer yet. There’s hope I’m an optimist and I would like people leaving this article feeling hopeful about the future. This month, I want to celebrate the great work, and huge value, the volunteer community put into Plymouth, and to encourage others to join them. The facts

TUNE IN on 96.3FM

I am indebted to the Cinnamon Network for their appraisal of the faith sector for the data in this report, but there are a vast number of

others sectors contributing to the wellbeing of our city. Look at these numbers:

636 faith based groups (FBGs) provide 646,702 hours of volunteer labour each year. 120,039 beneficiaries received nearly £8,000,000 worth of help. Assuming similar proportions of volunteers among the non-faith population, it would be fair to assume that nearly £80 million of help has been given in Plymouth in 2014. So what do they all do? Here’s a few activities from a very long list Providing accommodation Debt advice and counselling Foodbanks Healthcare Night shelters Playgroups Street Pastors Training and education Community activities Childrens’ groups School Governors Providing meals And the list goes on…. Who benefits? The simple answer is that some of the most vulnerable people in our society: older people, families, those struggling with mental illness, debt problems, physical disabilities, homelessness, are just a few groups who

get help from volunteers. How do I get (more) involved? There are two or three good places to start. Try www.ourplymouth.co.uk, www.plymouthguild.org.uk or make a direct approach to the organisation that helps the people you are most inspired to help. We may all have less to spend over the next five years, but we have got so much to give. And I don’t mean money. As John F Kennedy said in his inaugural speech ‘If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the rich.’ Steve Carey, Numbers UK Ltd 01752 226084 www.numbersukltd.com

Pharmacist David appointed as research champion for South West

A Plymouth-based pharmacist has been appointed as community pharmacy research champion for the South West. The Clinical Research Network for the South West Peninsula has appointed David Bearman as the champion lead to explore the potential for the delivery of NHS health research studies through local community pharmacies in Devon, Somerset Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. David, who works for Co-op pharmacy branches in Plymouth and the South Hams said: “There is real potential for pharmacies to contribute to the clinical research effort in the South West and in the future increase the regional research capacity. This should enable more patients to be offered the opportunity to take part in health research and increase recruitment to studies. “We have recently opened the very first research studies with a small number of pharmacies in Devon and Cornwall by way of a test of change. These studies relate to treatment of common skin conditions. We are creating a research active network of pharmacies from scratch and although modest in scale these first two projects represent a significant first step. “Creating a network of pharmacies to open

Support group meeting in Plymouth for people affected by lymphatic cancer

THE CHRIS COLE

Experience

Celebrating key milestones in progress of democracy One of my favourite films is Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Back in 2003 the BBC did a survey to find the best 100 novels that we as a nation love and Tolkien’s book came out on top of the ‘Big Read’. Now as a film, this wonderful story has reached a new audience who digest information more readily through audio-visual. The title of the novel refers to the story’s main antagonist, the Dark Lord Sauron who had in an earlier age created the One Ring to rule the other Rings of Power as the ultimate weapon in his campaign to conquer and rule all of Middle-earth.

an Elven prince; and Gandalf, a Wizard. The story is about faith, hope, love, despair and courage, defeat and victory, but the subtleties of the story are not lost on the spiritually discerning. One of those subtleties is that that the Hobbits live in the Shire and have very little interest or knowledge of what is going on in the wider world. Whilst a massive threat is growing outside their borders they seem oblivious to this growing reality. Like the novels of C S Lewis, a great friend of Tolkien, the story contains a ‘deeper magic’ that is more powerful than evil.

advice and says in a moment of despair, “all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” Tolkien included neither any explicit religion nor cult in his work. Rather the themes, moral philosophy, and cosmology of The Lord of the Rings reflect his Catholic worldview. In one of his letters Tolkien states: “The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work; unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision. That is why I have not put in, or have cut out, practically all references to anything like ‘religion’, to cults or practices, in the imaginary world. For the religious element is absorbed into the story and the symbolism.”

Our liberal democracy 500 years ago progressed through what was known as the reformation and enlightenment. Two main tools of empowerment were the printing press and the Bible, which were used to educate our forebears as they developed their civil and social society for good or ill. In June of this year (2015) we celebrated the 800th anniversary of the writing of the Magna Carta. In 2017 we will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation and then closer to home, in 2020, we will definitely as a city celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage. These historic events may be of no interest to many of us concerning our day to day (possibly like the Hobbits), but they do represent significant milestones in the development of our liberal democracies in the Western world and are foundational milestones, amongst many, which help us make sense of doing life together as a society.

From quiet beginnings in the Shire, a hobbit land not unlike the English countryside, the story ranges across northwest Middle-earth, following the course of the War of the Ring through the eyes of its characters, the hobbits On the journey of this adventure, Frodo Baggins, Samwise ‘Sam’ One thing is for sure, there are global Gandalf, in supporting the ring bearer Gamgee, Meriadoc ‘Merry’ Brandybuck threats that are growing, which will Frodo Baggins, gives some fatherly and Peregrin ‘Pippin’ Took, but also impact on the Shire of our the hobbits’ chief allies and existence and we need to be travelling companions: the prepared to do as Gandalf Men, Aragorn son of Arathorn, Chris Cole, is the founder of Cross Rhythms charity. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). History teacher Richard Atkinson and Year 11 student Sasha Cvetanovic travelled to London to be part of the recent ceremony.

Dan Snow explained that the project was created to raise awareness of The Battle of Waterloo.

Attended by the Prime Minister, the President of the European Parliament, Lord Mayor of London and Prince Charles there were also senior representatives of the Armed Services, representatives and ambassadors of all combatant countries involved in the Battle and descendants of men who fought in the Battle in the congregation. Sasha and Mr Atkinson were among the 400 students and teachers invited, alongside members of the public who entered a ballot for tickets. The Plymouth Lymphoma Association support group will hold the meeting on Thursday August 13 from 3pm to 4.30pm at the Conference Room, Derriford Health and Leisure Centre, Derriford Hospital The group is made up of individuals who are, or have been, affected by lymphoma in some way including patients, family members, partners, friends and carers. If you would like to attend the meeting, or would like further information about the group, please contact the Lymphoma Association’s Freephone helpline on 0808 808 5555 or visit www.lymphomas.org.uk. About the Lymphoma Association Founded by patients in 1986, the Lymphoma Association is a UK charity dedicated to providing accurate medical information and support to people affected by lymphatic cancer including families, friends and carers. Every year, more than 14,000 new cases of lymphoma are identified in the UK alone, making it the fifth most common cancer diagnosed by clinicians. Lymphatic cancer can occur in both men and women at any age, but is most common in people over 55. It is also the most frequently diagnosed cancer in teenagers and young adults. The services that the Association offers include a Freephone helpline, award-winning free patient information, a buddy scheme with telephone links to others with similar experiences, local support groups, regional patient conferences and a website featuring forums.

Guildhall tea dance raises over £500 for Mesothelioma Support Group An afternoon of dancing to lively music by ‘Wally’s Dance Party’ was enjoyed by those attending a charity Tea Dance in the beautiful setting of Plymouth Guildhall recently. Despite the numbers attending being lower than hoped for – due to bad weather – the afternoon which included a raffle raised a worthwhile £540 for the South West Mesothelioma Support Group, whilst at the same time raising awareness of asbestos related cancer.

“Being able to focus on a real battle artefact and track down local soldiers who fought makes this a very engaging and innovative way to learn.”

“It is an historic and pivotal moment in world history,” said the TV presenter and leading historian. We felt working with schools across the country would be a great way to create awareness of The Battle and highlight its significance.”

A national cancer charity is encouraging people who have been affected by lymphatic cancer to attend a support group meeting.

The event was organised by mesothelioma patient Wally Wright and members of Mesothelioma and Asbestos Awareness Plymouth and SouthWest (MAAPS).

Year 11 student Sasha Cvetanovic attended the service in London

Wally said: “Thanks to all those who helped set up, sell tickets and run the tea bar. Our gratitude also goes to asbestos specialist solicitors Novum Law for their support and sponsorship of the event. “Needless to say, the biggest thanks go to all those who attended. MAAPS looks forward to seeing them, and more, at the next Tea Dance which will be held on Friday July 31 from 2pm until 4.30pm at Plymouth Guildhall. Tickets cost £6 and can be purchased on the door.” MAAPS is a support and friendship group for those diagnosed with an asbestos related condition. Carers and those bereaved also find great comfort and support in the meetings. Members meet on the last Thursday of each month at 12.30pm in the Copthorne Hotel, Plymouth. It is a small and friendly group of people and new members are always welcome. If you would like any further information about MAAPS or the next Tea Dance, please contact Wally Wright on 01752 601750 or go to www.maaps.org.uk. Focus on rave culture A research project investigating Plymouth’s early 1990s rave culture is the subject of an exhibition opening at Plymouth Arts Centre. Local artist, Carl Slater has been researching video, private archival material and testimonials from DJs, party organisers and revellers for Crowd.Control, opening at the Arts Centre in Looe Street on August 1 until 12 September. A former student at Plymouth College of Art and now a director of KARST gallery in Stonehouse, Slater’s research touches on his Plymouth youth and focuses on the famous Union Street nightclubs. It is a celebration of their use, architecture and character. The centrepiece of the exhibition will be a hypnotic moving image

collage of unseen footage, edited from over 50 hours of video, taken at Plymouth’s early parties including Alpha and Essence. The exhibition also includes sculpture and wallbased works, incorporating some original flyers from the Union Street club nights. Slater also references the parallels between the firsthand accounts of ‘higher’ experiences or spiritual trips at raves and similar transcendental parallels experienced during religious worship. Ben Borthwick, artistic director at Plymouth Arts Centre said: “The emergence of rave culture in the late 1980s and early 90s had a profound and transformative effect on British society. “One of the radical shifts that happened was the migration of club culture from a small number of clubs in London or Manchester to outdoor

rural and coastal locations. “Plymouth was an important part of this scene, with club nights in huge variety theatres and dance halls followed by after parties with sound systems set up overlooking the beach and sunrise. “Twenty-five years later, aspects of this subculture have been completely absorbed into the normative mainstream, yet Slater’s work reveals a rawness of collective emotion and experience and that is specific to the local scene and extremely resistant to any kind of assimilation.” The exhibition follows a three-month residency by the artist as part of Plymouth Arts Centre’s artists’ residencies programme. Plymouth Arts Centre and Carl Slater are grateful to the Bryan Foster Charitable Trust for their support of Slater’s work.

Double success for apprentice Ashley at Student of the Year Awards

Zoe rewarded for her outstanding community spirit An Eggbuckland teenager has been recognised for her community spirit at City College Plymouth’s annual Student of the Year celebration. Zoe Coad, is studying a BTEC qualification, which is the equivalent to three A Levels, in sport and has devoted her time to giving back to the local community. Her achievements in the classroom and activities outside of college earned her the Student of the Year accolade. Zoe said: “I was so shocked to be given this award. I just love what I do, so it is nice to be recognised for it. I would love to be a teacher, so I try to involve myself in as many activities as possible to get the best experience.” Her involvement in community activities, like organising school cheerleading competitions, coaching swimming and competing in water

polo competitions, were also recognised by The Herald, this year’s sponsors of the Community Award - one of six special awards presented by local businesses and organisations to students who had impressed in their respective categories. Ben Manning, director of quality improvement at the college, said: “The college’s Student of the Year awards celebrate those who have gained fantastic results and have made a contribution to their peers, the college and the wider community. Zoe is a highly engaged and enthusiastic young woman and we’re immensely proud of her achievements.” In total, 17 students were presented with awards by City College’s Curriculum Directors. These students were recognised for making a significant contribution, often against the odds, from across the College’s diverse curriculum. From these winning students, a further six

special awards sponsored by local businesses and organisations were presented. The evening event was held in PL1, the College’s plush training restaurant, with a special menu prepared and served by hospitality and catering students. There was also live music courtesy of the College’s music students.

Ashley said: “It means so much to be recognised for my work. I have ADHD, so I can find it difficult to focus, but I’ve been determined to achieve my apprenticeship qualification this year. To also be given the Opportunity Award was a real surprise, because I wasn’t expecting it.” The Opportunity Award recognises those who have taken advantage of the opportunities made available to them at the College. Dr Elizabeth Smith, executive dean of student experience from the University of St Mark & St John, who sponsored the Opportunity Award, explained why they selected Ashley as the winner: “Ashley has risen to the challenge and shown a determination to keep trying. He has also been prepared to receive feedback and devote time to working very hard on his areas of weakness in order to improve.

“This has clearly taken quite an investment of time and effort on Ashley’s part but, despite this, he has been a positive and enthusiastic student.” Julie McLean, head of work-based learning, said: “The college’s Student of the Year event is the perfect way to celebrate the outstanding contributions made to the college and local community by our students. “Ashley has achieved a great deal this year and he has become a real role model to others on his Apprenticeship course who have been inspired by his determination - a very deserving recipient of the Apprentice of the Year Award.”

t is the end of our charity year which means time to reflect on our achievements. With the help of our community and volunteers we have been able to offer support to over 300 grieving children in Plymouth and the surrounding area. During the year we have run three group programmes for bereaved children and their parents/carers. These have helped children who have had someone special to them die through any cause of death. They have a chance to meet others and to know that they are not alone in their experiences. We have continued to run Stepping Stones, our group for children who have a parent with a terminal illness. Inevitably through the last year this

Join #TeamJeremiah We are always up to something so come and join in the fun! You could donate a couple of hours as part of our volunteer team. We run stalls, hold buckets, dress up and make lots of new friends along the way.

Some of our Fundraisers! has opened its doors to the families and is a great space for us to run our group sessions. Alongside this the children and families have received about 400 therapeutic support sessions from our two Project Coordinators. This has given individual children or whole families the chance to express how they are feeling and explore ways of coping with a difficult life event. There have been some fun days out which have given the children and families an opportunity to step out of the sadness, if only for one day. The children have spent time with our friends at The Donkey Sanctuary at Ivybridge for an Easter Egg Hunt. They have met up at Christmas time for a party with the Ice Princess from Upon A Wish and our teenagers have made mocktails with Tigermilk.

The National Marine Aquarium, Reel Cinema, Dartmoor Zoo, Clay Art and Jackie Gale Art have also provided family activities amongst other kind organisations. We have had incredible support from you, our community. As a local charity, fundraising has to be constant to ensure that we can be around to help the next child and family who might need us. Thanks to you over the last year we have been able to achieve that. We have some exciting events planned over the next 12 months that we hope you will get involved with. Our small but amazing team of volunteers would love you to join them if you can spare a couple of hours, you would be helping to make such a difference. And so to next year where more children and families will need our support. With your help we can be there for them and develop their resilience, not just for now but for the future. It has been lovely to share our work with you and we hope that you have found it insightful. Electoral registration campaign sees surge in Plymouth voters A campaign to increase the number of voters in Plymouth has been deemed a success by a national body and shortlisted for a national award. The Electoral Commission has published a report praising Plymouth City Council’s individual electoral registration campaign in the run up to the 2015 local and general election. The Council worked in partnership with Plymouth University and UPSU (Student Union), Plymouth Community Homes, Plymouth Community Healthcare and Derriford Hospital to maximise impact. As part of a drive to encourage the 250,000 eligible Plymouth voters to turn out, key areas were targeted with historically low turnout of voters. The areas targeted (also known as electoral wards) were Drake, St Peter and the Waterfront, and Sutton and Mount Gould. The campaign has also been shortlisted for this year’s Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) PRide Awards, in the Public Sector Campaign category. The campaign saw an increase from 4,233 registered voters in Drake ward in December 2014 to 6,768 in April 2015, while in St Peter and the Waterfront there was a increase from 8,983 t0 10,529. The national report states: “One example (of a campaign) is

Plymouth City Council, which developed a targeted campaign at their four most under-registered wards – two of which were the areas housing most of the student population. Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “We are delighted with the success of our local registration campaign, which added thousands of people to the electoral register, and it is great to see our campaign featured in this national report. “It is a prime example of how you can achieve greater success by working with local partners and by not using a ‘one size fits all’ approach. It is fantastic that so many students have signed up to register as we are always looking to encourage younger people to engage with politics. “We hope to learn from this and build on the success with future campaigns.” A range of methods were used to engage local people including: • Plymouth University – approximately 25,000 students (10% of our total city population) were targeted via two debates, three registration drives on campus, e-marketing, UPSU blog site. • Plymouth Community Homes – 20,500 homes were reached via newsletters and e-newsletters. • Plymouth Community Healthcare

– 3,000 staff reached via intranet and staff noticeboards. • Derriford Hospital – 6,492 staff were reached via intranet. The student campaign was driven by UPSU – and in particular the 201415 President Sarah Bowman – with support from the University, which facilitated events and assisted with a targeted marketing campaign. Ruth Titmuss, the new President of UPSU, said: “Students at Plymouth University really got involved with the SU’s campaign to register to vote, and it is great to see how effective we were in supporting student engagement with national politics. “We had great fun encouraging students through activities including ice-cream give-a-ways, pizza freebies, laser tag and the general election debates were a real hit.” In addition there were a total of 10,939 page views to the Elections Voting section of the Plymouth City Council website, and more than 33,000 impressions on twitter. Plymouth is included as a case study on page 44 of the national report. For more information read the national Electoral Commission report at www.electoralcommission. org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_ file/0006/190941/May-2015-pollspublic-awareness-activity-report.pdf. The CIPR PRide Awards will take place in October.

Ham Woods now flying the Green Flag Ham Woods Nature Reserve has been awarded a prestigious Green Flag. The Green Flag Awards are the national standard of excellence for parks and green spaces

am absolutely delighted, I know that Ham Woods is a nice place to spend time, now the Green Flag gives it a recognised seal of approval which tells everyone else that it is worthy of a visit. A huge well done to all friends and volunteers.”

This is the first time that Plymouth City Council has submitted Ham Woods to be considered for a Green Flag and now the council are proud to be able to say that Ham Woods is one of only a very few Nature Reserves to be given the award.

A range of free outdoor activities and events are taking place across the city’s parks and green spaces as part of Love Parks Week and throughout the summer, some of these will take place at Ham Wood Nature Reserve including Weaving and Woodcraft on July 30 and Scything on July 28.

This accolade is only thanks to the hard work and dedication of Friends of Ham Wood who have worked tirelessly with officers from the council, planting trees, improving access and the environment and making Ham Woods a pleasant place to be. This is the second award that has been won by the Friends of Ham Wood in recent weeks. They have also been given the Devon & Cornwall Police Partnership Community Volunteer Awards - Community Group of the Year, because of their efforts to deal with incidents of arson and graffiti, reporting incidents quickly and clearing them up. Plymouth City Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “I

The Green Flag scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country. It is also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards and creates a benchmark of excellence in green spaces. To meet the Green Flag Award standard the judges are looking for green spaces to be healthy welcoming places that are safe and secure, clean, well-maintained and sustainable. The management of the green space must involve the community, pay attention to conservation and heritage and include marketing of the site.

Dancing his way to a dream career dance and he almost quit pursuing his dreams.

A talented young dancer from Plymouth is taking the next big step in his dreams of a professional career after winning a place at one of the country’s top performing arts schools.

“Actually I was going to give up when I was 13 because I had a enough of all the pressure and stuff,” he said in an interview with the Plymouth Shopper. “And then my dancing teacher told me ‘Does it really matter what they think? You can do what you want to do!’ The teacher’s advice helped him through and JP carried on living his dream against the odds.

Eighteen-year-old John-Patrick Davie who grew up in Devonport and now lives in Higher Compton, was earlier this year offered a fullyfunded place with the Millennium Performing Arts in London.

His mum Jo, 42, who is a primary school teacher, also played a key role in JP’s development. Being passionate for dancing herself she supported JP all the way through.

Millennium Performing Arts has an outstanding reputation and has already helped many young people from the Plymouth area to achieve their dreams. They include Gemma Fuller and Samuel Holmes who has never stopped working since his graduation from Millennium.

She got him involved in the Plymouth Children’s Theatre workshop, where JP along with children aged between three and 18 performed at this years Pick n Mix show. “My mum has always been supportive,” said JP, “she always helped me go for what I wanted to do.”

Gemma is currently appearing in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, in London’s West End and is not only a member of the cast, but is also the dance captain for the show.

Last year he decided to pursue his dancing career rather than go into sixth form by doing a pre-vocational year at Jason Thomas Performing Arts in Truro. Then he applied for places at performing arts colleges.

Samuel’s last appearance was in Kiss me Kate at the famous Old Vic in London where he played the role of Gremio. John-Patrick, who most people simply call JP, will be joining Millennium Performing Arts in September to embark on a Level 6 Professional Diploma in Musical Theatre. It covers all the subjects required for those wishing to achieve a career in musical theatre including singing, acting, jazz dance, contemporary dance, tap, ballet and musical theatre history. The course is supplemented by classes in voice, core strengthening, musicianship and

workshops and lectures. John-Patrick is now busy looking for work in London to cover his living costs. Inspired by his younger sister Natalya, JP started dancing when he was little. Between the ages of 11 and 13 he decided that he wanted to make a career out of his passion for dance and began taking dance classes. In a similar scenario to the Billy Elliott story, JP was bullied and ridiculed when he started to

The audition at Millennium Performing Arts went so well that they offered him a fully funded place through the Dance and Drama Award scheme. Jo, who his running the Plymouth Children’s Theatre Workshop, said that she was delighted and proud for her son. “I would never have thought that JP would get a fully funded place at one of the best performing arts colleges in the UK.”

Young entrepreneur

Luc spots a gap in the tattoo removal market

A young entrepreneur from Stonehouse has embarked on his latest business venture specialising in tattoo removal.

Luc Cross, who is 23, ran a successful sweet shop in the city centre before selling it recently to finance his latest enterprise. He has invested in hi-tec laser removal and Laser Lipo equipment for his new business which is located in a former hair salon on Ford Hill. Luc said: “Like many people of my age I have been building my tattoo collection for quite a few years. Some have been done professionally, but many are the result of amateurs with tattoo guns. “I was not happy with some of them and started looking into having a couple of my amateur tattoos removed, but had difficulty finding anywhere that I would be comfortable going into. “It seemed odd that there are tattoo studios that cater for everyone, but there aren’t the same sort of places to get them removed or faded. “I did a lot of research and found a fantastic machine that not only does tattoo removal, but also hair removal, skin rejuvenation, pigmentation reduction and more. “My aim is to have a relaxed, easy going
