8,000 copies delivered in Compton, Crownhill and Manadon Green light for £42m cinema complex

It’s all go for city centre cinema plan Work on the £42 million Drake Circus Leisure development is set to start in 2016 after contracts were signed between developers British Land and Cineworld to run the new city centre cinema complex. The 12-screen cinema will be the focal point of the new development and will have screens ranging in size from a 63 seat to a giant 450-seat IMAX auditoria. More than a dozen restaurants will also be involved in the complex and it has been reported that there is strong demand from food businesses to become part of the venture. The deal means all the conditions have now been met by the developers which unlocks funds to get started on the new coach station that will replace the dated bus station. British Land has now issued the ‘coach station notification’ which means it has formally served notice on Plymouth City Council, as owners of Bretonside, to vacate the land by the summer of 2016, ahead of start of building. Final discussions are currently underway with the South West Highways, the preferred bidder for the coach station, who will start work on site shortly.

Work on new Central Library under way Work to create a new Central Library in the heart of Plymouth’s city centre is now under way. Vacant retail and bank units on the corner of Armada Way and Mayflower Street are being converted to create a more modern, flexible and welcoming library that will replace the one in Drake Circus. As well as helping to make way for the £32 million History Centre (due to open in 2020), the move is a major step forward in the city council’s ambition to modernise its library service, following an extensive review that listened to customers’ views and looked at best practice around the country. Features at the new library have been designed in partnership with library service users, customers and community and voluntary sector groups. As well as books, DVDs, free computer access and Wi-Fi, the new library will have meeting rooms, comfortable seating areas, a digital and training suite, study spaces, kiosk style café and a roof terrace with views over the city. The new library will be easier for many users to get to and will be fully accessible for people with disabilities. Together with the new Mayflower Coach Station it will also help regenerate that part of the city centre.

Cabinet Member for Finance and Assets and City Centre champion Mark Lowry said: “This is a critical milestone in the scheme as it signals the move from the planning stage towards delivery on the ground. “Now that these conditions have been met, we are in a positon to begin drawing down funds for the new coach station.

Work to merge the three units into one began in early October and internal walls have now been demolished. The refurbishment of the building will run until early March, when the final fit-out will take place.

“I’m chuffed to bits that so many companies are lining up to be part of this complex and part of Plymouth’s success story. This will add another string to the city centre’s bow and keep more people coming, both during the day and in the evening.”

Councillor Jon Taylor, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Transformation, visited the new library to see how work was progressing. He said: “It’s really exciting to see the plans for the new library coming to life and start to visualise how the library is going to look.

Councillor Lowry added: “An enormous amount of work has gone into getting this development to this stage and it is beginning to get a real sense of momentum.

“This is an opportunity to create a Central Library that is fit for the 21st century and better meets the needs of our customers. It will offer an open, bright, friendly and welcoming environment that will hopefully encourage more people through the doors and into this part of the city centre.

Work on the new coach station at Mayflower Street is just around the corner with the main construction to start in January and a few months later, the public will be able to see work start on the British Land development – these are big changes and a huge deal for the city.”

“We asked people to get involved and tell us what they want to see in their new library and, as usual, we received lots of creative suggestions which are helping to shape the project.

The coach station on Mayflower Street will have seven coach stands that will serve National Express and Megabus. Features include real time passenger information systems, blue badge holder drop-off bay, customer help points, ticket machines, toilets, cycle stands, CCTV and ornamental lighting.

“Customers will still be able to borrow books and DVDs, use our free computers and Wi-Fi, study, meet with friends or research their family history – and with our new opening hours, they can call in three evenings a week.”

New church academy is officially opened by Bishop St Matthew’s CofE Primary and Nursery Academy, the first brand new foundation church school to be built in Plymouth and the Diocese of Exeter since 1898, has been officially opened by The Bishop of Exeter, The Right Revd Robert Atwell. The ceremony was attended by pupils, staff, governors, the Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Richard Stephen Ball and representatives from St Christopher’s Primary Multi Academy Trust, Plymouth City Council, the construction team at Willmott Dixon, Exeter Diocese, Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, University of St Mark & St John, the local business community and stakeholders. The event signified the formal opening of the new building which was completed this year and began to deliver a 21st century curriculum when it welcomed its first cohort of students through its doors in September.

St Matthew’s CofE Primary and Nursery Academy aims to provide a local Christian presence driven by a compassionate heart and a high quality education for those of faith and no faith.

Pupils, aged from 4 to 10 joined guests for collective worship led by Reverend Chris Routledge, a member of the governing body and Bishop Robert. Guests were then given the opportunity to tour the three storey, 3192m sq. Sunesis Dewey pre-designed academy and enjoy refreshments before the formal ceremony began. “Building a school from scratch has been a unique and exciting opportunity and we’re thrilled to see the new building officially opened. Even though we’ve only been open a short time there is already a very strong sense of community here which is a credit to our learning family and bodes well for the future,” said executive head teacher Andrea Smith, who was born and educated in the city herself. She brings over 22 years teaching and ‘hands on’ leadership experience to her new post at St Matthews

Ensuring a positive sense of place and identity, it hopes to contribute to the creation of a well-connected, accessible, inclusive and safe community and provide educational and sporting facilities for the wider community to use. CofE Primary and Nursery Academy with the aim of supporting its growth and development within the newly emerging community of Seaton at Derriford in the North of Plymouth. “We’ve really valued the partnership between the Diocese, St Christopher’s Primary MAT, Plymouth City Council and Willmott Dixon which has brought this project to fruition. Together we’ve created a stimulating, supportive environment within a wonderful physical landscape,” she added.

St Matthew’s CofE Primary and Nursery Academy, part of the Diocese of Exeter, is part funded in partnership with Plymouth City Council and run by the Diocese’s St Christopher’s Primary Multi-Academy Trust (MAT). Ensuring there are sufficient primary school places for Plymouth’s growing population, it will eventually take 90 pupils a year through a three form entry with the capacity for 630 pupils aged 4 – 11, plus a 27 place nursery. When the Academy is full, it will employ 49 full time and 11 part time staff.

ACTION PACKED WEEK AT COLLEGE NURSERY

Curious Kittens Nursery at City College Plymouth took part in a fun-packed week of fundraising activity to raise money for Children in Need.

Staff and children were getting involved and embracing their creative side to raise as much money as possible through the week for the BBC’s annual appeal. They took part in activities such as face painting, fancy dress and a cake sale. On Monday, the children welcomed Pudsey Bear who joined them for a series of activities around the college. Fiona Warn, Infant Room leader for the nursery, said: “We are delighted to support this worthy cause. We do something for Children in Need every year and it is very important

to us.

“The children involved are aged up to four years, so not all of them will be aware of the importance of the fundraising aspect although

the older ones do have a level of understanding. We are hoping to raise as much money as possible through a range of fun activities.”

Busy time for the Sir Joshua Reynolds Choir The past twelve months has seen the Sir Joshua Reynolds Choir in celebratory mood marking their Silver Jubilee. Their 26th year starts with their Christmas programme, which is the usual popular mixture of seasonal music and carols and going under the title – ‘Merry Christmas, Everybody!’ The main event will be the annual presentation at Harewood House, Plympton on Saturday December 12, starting at 7.30pm. The programme is a varied one, put together, as always, by musical director Jenny George, and always has a wonderful festive and happy atmosphere, with audience participation. Tickets for this event are limited, and is, inevitably, a sell-out, so advance booking is certainly advisable, if not essential. They are priced at £7.50 which includes festive refreshments. To avoid disappointment, please ring Edward on 01752 405429 or Jenny on 01752 880730. The programme is also being presented at two other venues. On December 4 it can be heard at The Rock Methodist Church, Yelverton, admission £6, and again on the December 10 at Saltash Wesley Methodist Church, both at 7.30pm.

The cadets themselves are also assessed and asked to demonstrate elements of their training syllabus like a school OFSTED inspection. Commander Nigel Morton, Sea Cadet Area Officer, inspected the guard of honour with the unit’s commanding officer Chief Petty Officer Robert Adamson. Releasing the first Sand Tiger Shark into the quarantine tank at the National Marine Aquarium 4. Sand Tiger Sharks uShaka and Mandela in their new home at the National Marine Aquarium

Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium has welcomed two very special sharks to its family, with the arrival of the first captive bred Sand Tiger Sharks in the Northern Hemisphere. Travelling from South Africa, where they are known as Ragged Tooth Sharks - one female, called uShaka and one male, called Mandela - were born at the uShaka Seaworld, Durban, in March 2013 and December 2014 respectively. With almost two years on her brother, uShaka is the largest of the pair measuring in at 2.0 metres, while Mandela is currently 1.6 metres. As they mature, the Sand Tiger Sharks could grow to be up to 3 metres in length. Currently in quarantine following their travels from South Africa, the new Sand Tiger Sharks will be released into the Atlantic Ocean Tank in the coming weeks. The Sand Tiger Sharks’ arrival not only boosts the Aquarium’s shark population, they also mark a significant feat for the aquarium - as the first captive bred Sand Tiger Sharks to be shared between aquariums in the world. Captive breeding enables zoos and aquariums to

STONEHOUSE CLEAN-UP CAMPAIGN

Another important first for Marine Aquarium maintain healthy populations of captive animals and marine life. Keeping data on the captive species enables selective breeding of those with the strongest genes, thus creating the strongest captive population of the species. There are numerous Studbook and Monitoring programmes that exist for terrestrial and marine species in Europe and around the world, to enable better care and breeding programmes. Since 2013, the National Marine Aquarium has been creating its own monitoring programme for captive Sand Tiger Sharks in Europe - liaising with other aquariums across Europe to source and compile the information. The arrival of the new Sand Tiger Sharks is a significant step in the creation and development of the programme, and will enable the aquarium to actively manage and maintain the current and future captive Sand Tiger Shark population in Europe. Naval collection moves to Devonport Library Plymouth Central Library’s extensive naval history collection has moved to Devonport Library.

The collection includes books, images, journals and other artefacts and provides a fascinating background to the history of the Royal Navy in Plymouth. It has moved to Devonport ahead of the relocation of the Central Library and eventually being homed in the History Centre in 2020.

Devonport Library was chosen for its rich naval history and proximity to the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre in South Yard. Highlights of the collection that will be on display for the first time in many years include original manuscript logbooks for HMS Monmouth, 1756; HMS Resolution, 1899-1900 and HMS Goliath, 1900-1901.

The logbook for HMS Monmouth was kept by Master, John Thomas, who recorded the ship’s position and course and the weather, alongside details of tasks undertaken by the ship’s crew. An entry for Wednesday

23 June 1756 reads: “Moderate and fair weather, sent 60 sick men on shore…fired nineteen guns for his present Majesty’s accession to the throne, and began to fire the evening and morning guns, received 30 butts of beer and returned several empty casks.”

Staff at Devonport Library will be asking the public for help in identifying and decoding some mystery photographs from the naval image collection, which will be on display in the library and online.

Graham Naylor, group manager at the Central Library said “We’re really excited to show off this large and varied collection, which includes items relating to all aspects of the Royal Navy and naval history. It is an especially rich resource for those researching WWI naval history, other famous naval battles and campaigns through history and biographies of naval personalities.”

A number of events are being held at Devonport Library to celebrate the launch of the collection in its new home.

Families in Stonehouse are being asked to help keep the area special. The area is to be the focus of a month-long campaign by Plymouth City Council to sort out the niggling problems that let the neighbourhood down and encourage people to take more pride in where they live. Around 600 homes around Wyndham Square and the eastern end of Stonehouse have been sent letters to let them know what’s being planned, together with advice about when to put bins out and what to recycle. They are also being encouraged to report any issues so that they can be addressed. The council has drawn up a hit list of problems they will tackling. It includes:
 • removing fly tipping from Council-owned land
 • investigating abandoned vehicles
 • removing the bottle bank at Patna Park so less rubbish is dumped next to it
 • painting street furniture, such as the ornamental lights, bollards and seats to make them look smart – this will be carried out by the Shekinah Mission and the Probation Service
 • tidying up back streets by removing unused wheelie bins which have been clearly abandoned
 • cleaning graffiti from Council owned land

‘Somewhere Special Enough To Call Home’ For information contact Jacky & Jim Van Deijl 128 Peverell Park Road, Peverell, Plymouth, PL3 4NE

Tel: (01752) 262204

A team from the council will also be knocking on doors to talk to residents about how and what to recycle as well as try to get them more involved in their area and encourage them to report fly tipping. Other events being planned include a litter pick involving children from Cathedral School. Cabinet Member for Street Scene, Councillor Brian Vincent said: “Stonehouse is right in the heart of the city and is a special place – but it is let down by litter, fly tipping and some people just not caring enough about where they live.
“We want to change this. We need residents to take more responsibility for what is happening around them. Get involved! Don’t assume someone else will always be there to pick up. We will start off by sprucing the area but hope people will keep up the good work!” If members of the public see people dumping rubbish, report to it to the council straight away on 668000 with as much information as possible. This is a pilot scheme and if successful, this approach will be used in other areas.

End of an era for charity balls Dancers from across the city are being invited to the final charity ball to be held for a while at City College Plymouth in Kings Road.

The college is undergoing some extensive refurbishment to the hall where the dances have taken place and so is out of action for a while. The event has enjoyed attendance from hundreds of enthusiastic ballroom and sequence dancers, and has been a place of lively collaboration between organiser Wally Wright and several other well known individuals on the scene. Wally has organised the Christmas Charity Ball in aid of the South West Mesothelioma Awareness Group at City College on Saturday December 12. Tickets cost £6 with doors opening at 7.15pm and dancing from 8pm to 11.30pm. Wally said: “This is my last dance at the college, so it is sadly the end of an era. However, the dancing scene in Plymouth is alive and well, can be accessed by people of all ages and abilities and guarantees a great time for singles, partners or groups who want to get involved.” Wally wants everyone to know that ballroom and sequence dancing events will continue at different venues in the city. Jean and Henry have moved their classes to the Life Centre, starting in January, and can be contacted on 01803 325905 for more details And Jim and Tricia’s Candlelight Dancing, which is a fun social mix of many different styles of dancing, emphasising enjoyment rather than strict technique is now being held at the Woolwell Centre, Darklake Lane, Woolwell. City students visit Welsh Assembly Students from City College Plymouth have met with the Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, on a trip to the Welsh Assembly. Ken Skates AM (Assembly Member) had an unscheduled chat with the students, who were touring the Assembly building as part of their public services study programme. As part of their study programme, students are required to gain an understanding of local, regional, national and devolved government structures and responsibilities. Bradley Thomas, 18, is studying for his level 3 BTEC in Public Services at the College and spoke with the Minister. Bradley said: “It was really great that he took the time to come over and speak to us. He asked us why we were visiting and wanted to know our thoughts on devolved government. He was really interested to hear what we had to say. It really helped us to get that politics is something that is for people like us and that politicians

are just ordinary people too.” The annual Welsh Assembly visit is just one of many excursions public services students take over the course of the year to gain further insight into government, the armed forces, and the police, fire and ambulance services. Demelza Thackery, lecturer in public services at City College, said: “We are always looking for ways to bring

our subject to life and make it relevant to our students. We go to the Welsh Assembly every year to sit-in on some of the sessions so the students can see politics in action. “It was an added experience for them that the Minister was happy to have an informal chat. It really brought home that government at all levels is for them and that politicians are interested in their opinions.”

XMAS GIFT IDEAS

Funding windfall to get people more active People living in five areas of Plymouth will be embracing healthier lifestyles and enjoying the great outdoors on their doorstep, thanks to a new project. Active Neighbourhoods has been awarded £419,000 from the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities Fund to get cracking on a programme of health and communityrelated activities in and around woods and green spaces across the city. The project, which is led by Plymouth City Council and will be delivered in partnership with Devon Wildlife Trust, will work intensively with residents in Stonehouse, Ernesettle, West Park and Honicknowle, St Budeaux, Kings Tamerton and Efford. The three-year programme follows in the successful footsteps of the Stepping Stones to Nature project, a citywide scheme designed to get local people more connected with their environment. Now more deprived areas of the city are to receive special attention to help residents enjoy the open space on their doorstep, promote a sense of ownership and help protect it for generations to come. The funding will enable the project to pay for three posts – a part-time project coordinator, a full-time community and volunteering officer and a Devon Wildlife Trust based urban ranger. They will be recruiting volunteers to set up friends groups to take more control of five natural green spaces of

Devil’s Point, Budshead Wood, Ernesettle Creek, Kings Tamerton Wood and Efford Marsh. These groups will be supported by Devon Wildlife Trust and the Council to develop improvement and management plans for the sites. Improvements to local green spaces are likely to include better signs, new entrances, paths along with more seating.

Plans will also be drawn up with local residents aimed at making the spaces better for the local birds, bats, bumblebees, butterflies and other wildlife. The project also promises to ensure that the wild locations will be given a securer future with better protection by planning laws.

Cabinet Member for the Environment Councillor Brian Vincent said: “This is a really exciting project which will have many strands that will have real benefits for the people who live in these areas. “The link between being active and involved in your community and improved mental and physical health is well documented and this scheme is a sustained effort to change lives as well as make our environment more attractive. It will be good for the wildlife too.” The project will also involve input from health professionals who will be trained to consider the benefits of outdoor activities for their patients, particularly those suffering from mental health issues. Local residents will also be given more support and guidance to enable them to have more of a say in where they live. The small team behind the project will work closely with

partners and the community to put on lots of exciting events and activities to encourage residents to get to know these locations better, to use them more often, get more involved in their community and try out different things. Devon Wildlife Trust’s Chief Executive, Harry Barton, said: “I am absolutely delighted by this news. At Devon Wildlife Trust we believe that regular contact with nature and with wildlife makes everyone happier and healthier. “This funding from BIG and our partnership with Plymouth City Council is a fantastic opportunity to bring more wildlife into Plymouth and to make it part of everyone’s daily experience.”

Active Neighbourhoods builds on the success of the Stepping Stones to Nature project, which ran for four years in Plymouth until 2013. A partnership project, it is aimed to make it easier for people to enjoy the 225 green spaces including nature reserves, wildlife sites as well as playgrounds and parks in the city.

It aimed to encourage more residents to get in touch with the natural world and showed the importance of providing great natural spaces to improve residents’ wellbeing and to raise aspirations.

Residents launch £20,000 Crowdfunder appeal for community garden in Compton had valid concerns about the loss of green space as well as parking and access.

Residents have launched a Crowdfunder appeal to raise money to purchase disused tennis courts at Collings Park in Higher Compton.

“We listened and were prepared to see what ideas they could come up with to give this land back to the people living around it. Encouraging people to own assets – whether it’s a building or land helps strengthen the local community and bring people from different backgrounds together.

The Collings Park Trust, a local community group, wants to raise £20,000 in the next four weeks to buy the land from Plymouth City Council, thanks to a community asset transfer.

“Helping this to happen is what being a cooperative council is about. The proposed land transfer also fits the city’s goal of being more pioneering as it delivers a community service, ie a garden at no cost to the council tax payer and also helps instils a sense of environmental and social responsibility in that neighbourhood, he said.

The land lies beside a footpath that connects parts of Hartley with Eggbuckland Road and is often used by locals as a short cut, now it will provide a place for the community to meet. The Trust have drawn up plans to use the site for a forest school for children, a sensory garden, an orchard, places for growing as well as a wildlife corridor. The land had been declared surplus to requirements and earmarked as a possible location for housing development under the city’s Plans for Homes agenda. What is a Neighbourhood Watch?

By Trevor Green of St Levan Park Neighbourhood Watch

A Neighbourhood Watch is simply some residents coming together to try and improve the area in which they live.

Community Fitness Sessions

To try to create an area where crime and anti-social behaviour is less likely to happen and also bring the neighbourhood together, by encouraging a willingness and desire to participate in activities that promote their community. So why do some people call us ‘curtain twitchers’? The only time my curtain twitches is when I open a window and the breeze disturbs a curtain.

Supported by Plymouth City Council’s Sports Development Unit

The image some have is of people who like to interfere with the lives of others. That would only alienate people, not encourage residents to help us improve the area. Maybe those people do not realise that the purpose of a Watch has changed over the years. We have evolved into a localised help and advice service, working in partnership with local councillors and local police. Perhaps the name should be changed to reflect the fact that ‘watch’ has become help. All Neighbourhood Watch groups come under the careful eye of Devon and Cornwall Community Watch Association (DaCCWA). On a local level there is a Neighbourhood Watch Desk at Devonport Police Station. We are called co-ordinators and we must pass a strict ‘vetting’ process. We are bound by rules of conduct, so we cannot do just what we like. What we do We are all unpaid volunteers and no one can demand that all groups follow a set pattern, therefore some will only assist a few neighbours and others, like ours, will cover a large area.

Group Fitness

Some will provide a ‘home watch’ service for a few homes and stop there, whilst others, like ours, will go much further. Most Neighbourhood Watches, including ours, will contact the council to report fly-tipping, pot-holes, blocked drains, noisy neighbours, and so on. Most will also contact the police to report vandalism, bogus callers, harassment, speeding vehicles. Most will respond to neighbours asking for help to resolve a problem.

We encourage residents to attend local ‘Have Your Say’ meetings, where complaints and problems can be put directly to local councillors and local police. These cover a whole neighbourhood not just our smaller area. Do look out for meetings held in your neighbourhood.

YMCA Plymouth Honicknowle Lane Plymouth PL5 3NG

In our case we are a group of ten residents. We hold monthly meetings often attended by local councillors and the police. We also produce a twice yearly newsletter which we deliver to 600 residences. Past issues have included articles on how a burglar chooses a house, dog fouling, shoppers rights, scams and fraud, help that is available for senior citizens and the disabled, help that is available for a carer (some carers are school children looking after a parent). We also publicise local community facilities, such as a specialist gym for those who have had a stroke or have an illness. If only a few people are helped by our articles then all the research required to produce them will have been worth it. This is a Neighbourhood Watch. Now ask yourself, is what we do worthwhile? We are St. Levan Park Neighbourhood Watch.

The Plymouth Shopper

Supporting waterfront businesses this Christmas including workshop training so that a social media campaign can benefit all the local traders.

By Karen Pilkington The Plymouth Waterfront Partnership (PWP) represents more than 620 businesses in the area which covers three square miles and stretches from Royal William Yard to Queen Anne’s Battery Marina.

Sarah operates two twitter accounts @pwpbid and @waterfront_news to promote all the great activities in the area. Well-deserved praise is given to local businesses at the City and Waterfront awards - this year Billy Holmes, landlord at The Dolphin, received the Lifetime Achievement Prize, and the Wet Wok were named Waterfront Business of the year for their amazing come back from the terrible storms that devastated the restaurant during 2014.

The not for profit organisation delivers the Business Improvement District (BID) for the waterfront area, having become the 173rd BID in the UK three years ago. Today there are 220 BIDs and they’re a rapidly growing industry representing more than 85,000 businesses nationally.

There is much more in the pipeline too. Latest news and meeting minutes are available online at www. waterfrontbid.co.uk, and Sarah is busy working with the City Centre Company BID to create a seamless transition between the city centre and the Waterfront area, particularly focusing on the Bretonside community in an effort to increase footfall.

BIDs are business-led partnerships focused on improving and enhancing commercial areas including town and city centres, commercial locations and industrial estates. PWP works closely with Plymouth City Council, Destination Plymouth, and the City Centre Company BID to ensure that Plymouth delivers its plan to become a major UK tourist destination. There is an extensive marketing campaign ongoing to increase visitor footfall and spend from outside the city, and across the South West visitor numbers from overseas were up this year which is encouraging news. However the Barbican area particularly is susceptible to the weather, so traders have had a difficult year to date and need local residents to help support the rich variety of local shops and hostelries. Starting on November 26 with an Illuminate Thanksgiving ceremony – PWP has recently invested £5000 to permanently light the Mayflower Steps memorial – the area will host a more relaxed, intimate and romantic atmosphere in the run up to Christmas. Santa will arrive by RNLI lifeboat to the Barbican on Sunday December 6, to switch on the Christmas lights at 4pm; there will also be a special Christmas market at the Royal William Yard from 10am and a shuttle bus, funded by the PWP, will run between both venues all day.

This will be included in the second BID plan, which if successful at a business ballot will begin another five year programme in April 2017. Covering the Mayflower400 celebrations of 2020, a strong local voice is so important to really help put this historic area of Plymouth on the global map. Sarah Gibson said “Supporting independent businesses is crucial, especially in the run up to Christmas. There’s a fantastic retail range on offer across the Barbican, including art galleries, jewellery, arts and crafts, antiques and clothing, unique items for those extra special gifts. Shops are open generally between 10am and 4pm each day and car parking close by is easy.

Barbican traders getting in the Christmas spirit

One of the issues the area faces is connectivity, but Waterfront Manager Sarah Gibson – the energy behind the Waterfront BID –emphasised that the water taxi companies are taking this to heart and will provide a much more joined up and exciting service. This way tourists and locals alike can enjoy the best views of the area by water as they travel between the Royal William Yard, the Barbican and Mountbatten. The experience of being on the water is just one of the many delightful offerings of the area, which is home to the highest concentration of cobbled streets in the United Kingdom. During the city’s zeal to fulfil the Abercrombie plan and rebuild out of the Blitz, it took a determined community activism to resist demolition of New Street in the Barbican.

That community spirit is why there is such a rich Tudor heritage remaining today. The area still requires a similar investment of passion – such as that evident in Sarah Gibson – to really bring it to life as an exceptional destination for locals and tourists to enjoy. The PWP works with a Board of 11 directors and an Advisory Board with 21 business owner seats, covering seven different business sectors, and have to date delivered on 83 per cent of the 42 initial Waterfront Business Plan projects.

“The Bretonside area close to St Andrews’ Church offers entertainment with some of the loveliest restaurants including The Greedy Goose and The Chancel while the oldest pub in Plymouth The Minerva is located on Looe Street. Christmas markets offer even more style to the Royal William Yard.

New toilets have much improved the area, and more are promised at Devil’s Point and West Hoe. There have been considerable improvements to road and pavement surfaces, better signage and lighting, and there is currently a drive to join up marketing strategies

Sarah concludes with a clarion call to Plymouth residents “buy local and support your waterfront businesses this Christmas.”

MONEY MA££ERS with Steve Carey

This year has seen the Advice Plymouth Partnership grow in strength. The organisations of Citizens Advice Plymouth, Age UK Plymouth, Plymouth Guild, and Routeways have had a busy, successful and rewarding year. The partnership took some time to reflect on this year’s positive outcomes and to look forward to 2016. Plymouth Citizens Advice trained a large number of new gateway assessors in 2015. The gateway assessors answer the enquiries over the phone and are the first point of contact. Consumers urged to know their rights and shop with confidence this Christmas Consumers are being urged to get to grips with the new provisions in the Consumer Rights Act to avoid frustration when giving and receiving gifts this Christmas.

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 replaces eight existing laws including the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 and came into force on October 1. One of the major changes is to impose a specific time limit on when consumers can obtain a refund for faulty goods. If goods are sold that do not meet legal requirements there is a

short period of 30 days during which the consumer is entitled to reject them. After this time they will need to consider either a repair or replacement. For the first time legislation now covers digital content and outlines consumers rights if something goes wrong with software you have downloaded. When purchasing services, Plymouth City Council recommend using businesses that are members of Buy with Confidence www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk Consumer advice is available from the Citizens Advice consumer service on 03454 04 05 06 or online on www. citizensadvice.org.uk

We are all slaves to something!

I went on a protest march recently.

Well, I exaggerate, it was more of an ‘awareness raising’ walk, which involved parading through the city centre one Saturday morning, with gaffer tape stuck over my mouth. The idea was to raise awareness of human trafficking and modern day slavery. But I got to thinking about the people in the city centre, and how free they were. The answer challenged me to think about the things to which I am enslaved. And apart from walking occasionally around Plymouth with my mouth taped up, I am quite normal.

If not, put it on the “want” list, and remove it from the ‘need’ list. Then do some research. Use the internet, ask friends, visit shops. Find a list of prices on EVERYTHING on your needs list. Then work out the maximum you can afford, without borrowing. Order the needs list in priority order and calculate how many items you can afford. If you have any money left to allocate (!), add in from your wants list, in priority.

What’s this got to do with money I hear you think? Well, our economy works on the basis of our desire to conform and to have more and more of the latest/best/most trendy... stuff.

The benefits

As Black Friday approaches, here are some tips to resist the siren calls of the marketeers.

Another advantage is that you will have really thought about what you need before visiting those sales, so you’ll be better able to resist the impulse buys.

A resistance strategy Make a list of things you really, really need. A week later look at it again, and work out what really is essential. In doing this, recall

The main benefit in doing this before the sales start is that you’ll overestimate the price of each item. Hopefully, when the sales start, you’ll find you can afford more.

You may also find you can afford items on your “wants” list that you thought were out of reach.

What’s this got to do the slavery? Our economy works on the basis of convincing us we will miss out. You can enslave yourself to the advertisers’ message and methodology. Hopefully, using these tips can free you from this, so you can choose freely what you spend your hard-earned cash on. Steve Carey, Numbers UK Ltd 01752 226084 www.numbersukltd.com

Plymouth schools recognised for their international links More than 50 schools from across the South West – including 17 from Plymouth – were in the city in Novemver for the South-West Regional International School Award presentations. The schools had all been awarded the British Council International School Award. The award encourages schools to make educational links with schools in other countries and help broaden the horizons of children and young people through a range of international activities. It’s the first time the city has been a host for the South West Awards ceremony which took place at the city’s Council House. A record number of schools in Plymouth received awards. The British Council International School Award initiative is funded by the Department for International Development (DfID) with full support from the Department for Education. It is coordinated locally by Plymouth City Council, other sponsors of international programmes and activities include the EU Erasmus + Programme, the Institute of Education Confucius Institute and Han Ban. Councillor Sue McDonald, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Public Health, said: “As Britain’s Ocean City Plymouth’s international links are extremely important to our growth. So I’m really pleased that so many of our schools are once again being presented with the International School Award. I know that many of the schools taking part in this celebration event have far exceeded the award criteria. The work they are doing is inspirational.” To qualify for the award schools have to demonstrate an international ethos and give evidence to support their application across an academic year which includes identifying seven curricular activities, three of which must be with one or more schools in other countries, and one with a foreign language element. These activities must involve pupils across

The Mustard Tree Macmillan Centre supports people with cancer, their families and carers, and works closely with all the staff who are involved in the treatment of cancer. Sue Smith, centre manager at the Mustard Tree said, “We are thrilled to receive this prestigious award. We couldn’t have done it without the help of

all the staff and volunteers who work at the centre on a daily basis. When you or a loved one is facing cancer, not being able to find the answers you need can be frustrating and isolating. THE CHRIS COLE

Experience The reason for the season... I’m an old sentimentalist when it comes to Christmas and I don’t mind admitting it. I notice with age that you tend to stop apologising for certain things and start to appreciate the things you were probably confident about, but too English to admit, so there you go, I declare ‘I like Christmas’. I like the original ‘Scrooge’ with Alistair Simms and don’t like the muppet version. I love it’s a wonderful life. I love family; food; a good bottle of red wine and above all I love the ‘reason for the season’. Goodwill and a hope that people may be a little more generous to each other and more forgiving for the ‘messiness’ of just being wonderfully human. We sanitise the nativity story for the kids, which is great, but read the true story of God’s

humanity arriving in Jesus Christ and the backdrop was more like a James Bond plot. But I won’t elaborate here on that story. Perhaps you can read it yourself if you have a Bible.

as we demonstrate our shared humanity; reach out to each other in kindness and endeavour to make our time on earth as positive an experience as possible. It takes a positive attitude in difficult circumstances sometimes to process the ups and downs of life and we salute those who endeavour to be part of the solution to life’s challenges.

Anyway, on behalf of all of us at Cross Rhythms we want to thank everybody who listen and support our community radio station and programmes. We also want to thank the Cornerstone team who help promote our community media work through their publications of magazine and newspapers throughout the year, including this column.

Christmas is one of those national holidays which deeply contribute to the DNA of our British values. In many ways we are gifts to each other in this season

It celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ who was sent by God the Father (Holy Parent) as

gift to us all. As stated in that positively supernatural book the Bible “For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He (even) gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost), but have eternal life and (actually) live forever.” John 3.16 (Amplified Bible). This is why we celebrate Christmas as a Christian holiday. We then recognise what he came to do at Easter or Passover. A life born to die, but he is still the most significant person in history in terms of influence and next month as we normally do in this article we’ll explain why. Have a great holiday and “God Bless Us, Every One!” as Tiny Tim said.

West End stars join Plymouth youngsters Young performers across Plymouth are being given the chance to work with West End stars.

Existing facilities near the local shopping centres at Southway, Whitleigh and Crownhill will be demolished and replaced. Cabinet Member for Street Scene, Councillor Brian Vincent said: “Public toilets are an important part of Plymouth’s tourism offer. Poor quality toilets do not help sell Britain’s Ocean City to visitors. “More and more people are visiting all parts of our waterfront and enjoying the amazing views around Devil’s Point and Richmond Walk and we want to provide facilities for them.” “While our Street Services have tried to keep a good level of provision and cleanliness, some of our toilets were looking tired and suffering from structural issues. “We pledged to overhaul the network, keep them clean and open and help stop vandalism.” Devil’s Point will be refurbished to include a disabled toilet. There will also be a shower so that people using the beach and seawater pool at Firestone Bay can rinse off after bathing. The council is working with the Stonehouse Lawn Tennis Club to agree a lease for a facility at the rear of the building. As part of the lease conditions the tennis club will make their facility available to the local community. With more people using the revamped toilets, it is hoped the facility will be less of a target for vandalism and antisocial behaviour. The work will involve demolishing the old block and building a base to install toilets similar to the facilities that have been erected on the Barbican. The applications are part of an ongoing investment in the city’s toilets. Last year public toilets at Quay Point and Elphinstone Car Park were replaced. They were recently awarded platinum status in the ‘National Loo of the Year Awards 2014.’

The project is due to finish next Spring when all the facilities will open to the public.

In addition he has just presented his first musical written and composed by himself Guy Fawkes, which premiered on bonfire night at the Prince of Wales Theatre, London. Nick recently joined students, teaching them extracts from his most recent role in Barnum. Learning material from a West End show is a privilege and the students were fortunate to have this opportunity.

A juniors workshop for 12 and under and a senior for 13 plus. In addition, students have the opportunity to have private tuition with these stars. Sarah said: “To have the chance to work one on one with a professional is incredible, they may be casting a West End production one day and remember one of the students faces! It also allows the children to have feedback from someone who has made it within the business.”

Two new sets of loos with sea views at Richmond Walk and Devil’s Point are among a round of planning applications that have just been submitted to planners.

Subject to permission, Outland Road and Hooe toilets which have been closed and boarded up for a number of years will be demolished in December, with work on the remaining sites due to start in January 2016.

Recently former Plymouth student Nick Butcher, returned to deliver a workshop. Nick trained professionally at Laine Theatre Arts and has performed throughout the West End in shows including Oliver, Barnum, Fame and My Fair Lady to name a few.

A building programme of new toilets is being rolled out across the city.

The existing toilets at Richmond Walk will be demolished and replaced with a single disabled accessible unisex toilet. TEC Construction have been appointed to carry out the work.

Trained professionals Sarah Bayliss and Jodie Burrows have teamed together to create SJ Production of Arts, a company dedicated in providing the best opportunities for budding artists. Every month, West End stars visit Plymouth to provide youngsters with a workshop in dance, singing and acting.

Jodie Burrows said: “What’s fantastic is that it allows local children to aspire to believe in their dreams. Nick has shown them their dreams are possible!”

Plans for new loos for waterfront and local shopping centres submitted

Jamie Neale, who trained at Rambert, has also recently joined SJ Production of Arts. He has progressed to become a top

West End star Nick Butcher with the youngsters

choreographer for hit shows such as So You Think You Can Dance. Sarah and Jodie aim to provide students with the chance to work with not only West End stars, but also directors and choreographer Jodie said: “Giving students the chance to work with so many different people in the business allows a real insight to what life is like in the professional world.”

As one of the finalists for the award Plymouth City Council, organisers of the event, will compete to be awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze along side Exeter Festival of South West Food & Drink and The Contemporary Craft Festival in Bovey Tracey. The winners will be announced at the prestigious Awards Ceremony at the end of November at the Holiday Inn in Plymouth, where the event will be hosted by Judi Spiers along with a special guest.

And the good news is that this is open to anyone in Plymouth. Jodie said: “We are very excited about what the future has in store – we aim to provide Plymouth with the best.”

Successful businesses in the Devon Tourism Awards will then be fast tracked into the South West Tourism Excellence Awards in February 2016 and then possibly invited to represent Devon in to the National VisitEngland Awards later in 2015.

Director Mark Sidey will be joining them on Sunday January 24 for their next workshop followed by an Easter School in March. SJ Production of Arts is open to any performer across Plymouth.

Armed Forces Day joins a number of other Plymouth businesses that are finalists over 22 categories including; Mayflower Marina, Le Vignoble, The Grosvenor Plymouth, Plymouth Gin and National Marine Aquarium.

Details and video clips can be found on www. sjproduction-arts.com or email sjproduction.arts@ gmail.com. If you would like to book a place for the next workshop please contact 07875648092.

The Devon Tourism Awards are now in their 6th year since its launch in 2010 in association with Visit Devon. A full list of the finalists can be found at www.devon tourismawards.org.uk. The Plymouth Shopper

Two city chippies in line for top award Two of Plymouth’s leading fish and chip businesses, Harbourside Fish & Chips in the Barbican and Kingfisher Fish & Chips in Chaddlewood, have been shortlisted as finalists in the Good Catch – The Sustainable Seafood Award as part of the 2016 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish.

The two fish and chip businesses will now go head to head against fellow fish and chip contender - Olley’s Fish Experience in Herne Hill, London – in the race to bag the prestigious Good Catch Award. To secure a place as a coveted finalist, the shortlisted businesses have been appraised across a wide variety of judging criteria focusing strongly on the policies and procedures they have in place regarding the responsible sourcing of the fish and shellfish they use in their respective shops. Judges also appraised how well shops performed at educating and informing customers on the sustainability credentials of the seafood they serve including how the fish is caught. In addition, shops were probed as to how they seek to influence or encourage others in the industry to have a responsible attitude to serving sustainable fish and seafood, and questioned on what their plans were to take sustainability of seafood a step further in their respective businesses over the coming year. As part of in-depth judging inspections when businesses were visited by an awards auditor, both the front and back-of-house operational aspects of shops were assessed, along with appraisal of the quality of the fish and chips on offer and the levels of customer service and knowledge provided by staff.

Time to get your skates on! Visitors to Plymouth City Centre can get their skates on as the outdoor winter ice rink returns. Under new management by Blue Martini, the Plymouth Winter Ice Rink is located at the Piazza, Armada Way, from until the end of January and will offer an authentic Christmas experience.

Recognising fish and chip businesses that are leading the way in the sourcing and promotion of sustainable fish and shellfish, the Good Catch Award celebrates fish and chip businesses across the country that are actively working to protect supplies of seafood.

Peter Gorman, director from Blue Martini, said: “We are really excited to be managing the Plymouth Winter Ice Rink this year and the city centre is the perfect location. Just imagine skating outside, underneath the Christmas lights to the sound of festive tunes - it’s enough to get anyone in the Christmas spirit.”

It is co-sponsored by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the international ecolabel and certification programme for sustainable fishing practises, and the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), the UK charity dedicated to the protection of our seas, shores and wildlife.

Blue Martini is specialists in the design, installation and management of ice rinks and have previously managed ice rinks in major cities including Manchester, Birmingham, Bournemouth and Southend.

The overall winner of this award category will be announced at the awards ceremony to be held in London in January.

“I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes from him.”

The lanterns are to be used in a parade which commemorates the Pilgrims voyage to the New World from Plymouth on the Mayflower. Karen Evans, Parade Artist for the Illuminate and Thanksgiving Parade which takes place on Thursday November 26 is working with a number of schools and community groups to make handmade lanterns which will light up the route from the Mayflower Steps to the Minster Church of St Andrew. The aim of Illuminate is to ‘share the light’ and inspire a sense of unity between Plymouth and America. The Illuminate and Thanksgiving ceremony will begin at 5pm at the Mayflower Steps with performances from the Mayflower 400 Legacy Choir and speeches from The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Dr John Mahony, Chris Arscott, Chair of Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and historian Chris Robinson. At 5.30pm a lantern parade led by Plymouth City Pipe Band will follow the route from Commercial Wharf, along Notte Street, Buckwell Street and then onto The Minster Church of St Andrew at 6.20pm where Reverend Joe Dent will conduct a service to commemorate the occasion. More information about the Illuminate and Thanksgiving event can be found online at www.mayflower400uk.com and visitplymouth.co.uk

Willow puts down new roots in Plymouth This country girl is heading to the city to make it a bit more rural!

Plymouth launches new safeguarding training for taxi drivers

Willow Large-Lee is the new apprentice countryside manager who will be playing a crucial part in creating a community park for Plymouth at Derriford. The 18-year-old who studied Countryside Management at Bicton College, which is part of the Cornwall College Group, has now joined Plymouth City Council and will be helping shape the park, which will have a working farm as well as an environmental education hub on the land which covers 140 hectares.

A new scheme aimed at keeping some of Plymouth’s most vulnerable people safe is being officially launched after a successful pilot. Plymouth City Council’s Taxi Licensing Team joined together with the Local Children and Adult Safeguarding Boards to offer training sessions to 60 of the city’s hackney carriage, private hire drivers and operators.

She said: “I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in as it’s such an exciting project. I know there will be a lot to do and a lot to take in, but it’s an incredible opportunity.” Willow has had a bit of a head start as her family run a forestry business, Courage Copse Creatives in North Devon and she has always been keen on the outdoor life. She said: “There’s a picture of me when I was five or six being surrounded by sheep – I was the same height – and even then I told my parents: I want to do this.” Willow will be on a level 4 apprenticeship which will prepare her for life as a countryside manager. She is very new to Plymouth.

Her interview was the first visit, and she was pleasantly surprised at how much green space and parks there are here. She added: “I’m looking forward to meeting people who live around here and getting them fired up about this park.

Cabinet Member for Strategic Infrastructure and Planning, Councillor Mark Coker said: “We would like to welcome Willow to Plymouth and to this project, which we hope will inspire other young people to think about learning valuable skills and an appreciation of our incredible environment.

Duchy College is part of the Cornwall College Group and has teamed up with the Council to create a ‘Derriford

Plans for Derriford Community Park have been in the

As well as protecting the last working farm in Plymouth, the plans could see up to 200 full and part time students studying courses including horticulture, countryside management, animal care as well as Royal Horticultural Society programmes in practical horticulture, plant growth, propagation and garden design.

Earlier this year, a memorandum of agreement was signed by the college and the council to develop ideas ahead of submitting bids for funding for a 10 year programme.

Other ideas being developed include over 15 kilometres of new footpaths and cycle routes for walkers, joggers and cyclists; new habitats to complement the two existing Local Nature Reserves, community garden and orchard for growing food for the farm shop and café.

The pilot project started as a result of the learning that came out of national investigations and reviews into Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE), which highlighted the need to engage and train the taxi driver community on the topic of CSE, as well as looking at child and adult safeguarding. Councillor Philippa Davey, Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities said: “Quite simply safeguarding is everyone’s business. We know that hackney carriage and private hire drivers are in a unique position to report behaviour that concerns them whether it involves a vulnerable child or an adult who may be being put under pressure to do things which make them feel uneasy, for example attend a nightclub, house party.” John Beaumont and Roy Hamilton are from the Plymouth Licenced Taxi Association (PLTA) said: “We found the course to be most enlightening and informative. It brought many subjects to the fore that although being aware of subconsciously, had not been given much thought. We now feel much better informed in how to deal with suspicions regarding children and vulnerable adults. This a well-balanced course that we see, in the fullness of time, being incorporated into the BTEC for all new taxi drivers.” The next training sessions are in January and February 2016. Duke of Edinburgh visits the Royal Marines in Plymouth

Photos by Roy Perring

Marines said they were honoured and privileged to explain their role to the royal visitor as he toured 1 Assault Squadron Royal Marines (1AGRM) in Devonport Naval Base in his role as Captain General, Royal Marines.

Royal Marines and their families hosted a special visitor when His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, visited the elite amphibious troops in Plymouth.

The group is the lead for amphibious warfare and Royal Navy board and search training and is tasked with training and developing core amphibious and surface assault skills and equipment. The Duke of Edinburgh received a briefing on the current activities by the commanding officer of 1AGRM Colonel Graeme Armour. Col Armour said: “This is a fantastic day for me and the group. We all swear allegiance to the Queen, but His Royal Highness is the figurehead of the Royal Marines. But he is much more than that to us. We hold him in great esteem, especially with his distinguished career in the Royal Navy. He takes his duties very seriously and lives and breathes the Royal Marines Corps.

‘’This was a great chance for the troops to show off their kit, their knowledge and skills. As expected, he showed a detailed genuine interest in them and put them on the spot with his questions. The guys have been blown around on exercise all week in small craft in bad weather off the SW coast - this was a contrasting reward for them.’’ Col Armour said he had previously met his royal visitor twice before, including at the Royal Marines’ Corp 350th birthday celebrations last year: “That was a ceremonial highlight for him and this was a natural follow-on for him to see an operational unit on a personal visit.’’ His Royal Highness presented long service and good conduct awards and met injured Marines undergoing recovery. Colour Sergeant John Miller was presented by HRH with a long service bar representing 30 years’ service. He was watched by his proud son Jonathan who is due to join the Navy as an engineer after university. Sgt Miller said: “To receive my bar from His Royal Highness was absolutely amazing and totally rewarding for my long service.’’ Other long service recipients were: Sergeant John McDonald (Royal Marines), Leading Engineering Technician Simon Lingarfield (Royal Navy) and Colour Sergeant Damian Barrett (Royal Marines).

Marine Connor Meek, of 539 Assault Squadron (part of 1AGRM), said: “He (HRH) wanted to know all about my job and role and the squadron history. He wanted to know all about how our kit works. I told him we were a
