to demand line upgrade Plymouth residents and people across the South West are being urged to write to their MPs to send the message to Westminster that a fast, resilient 21st Century rail network for the peninsula must be a priority. In a ‘Motion to Council’ on February 24, Councillor Tudor Evans asked the Full Council to back calls to the Prime Minister to get on with the study into additional rail routes to serve the South West Peninsula. He wants residents to play their part in getting the rail issue on the agenda. He said: “We want people to write to their MPs and if you have friends in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset get them to write to their MPs as well. “It’s taken a collapse of our network – and not just the track at Dawlish – for Whitehall to acknowledge we have a real issue down here. We appreciate that there are ongoing emergency and flood issues to address, but we cannot afford the issue of our rail resilience to be kicked into the long grass.” The motion, which was seconded by Councillor Ian Bowyer, shadow leader for Plymouth City Council, recognises the inadequacies of the South West peninsula rail network highlighted by the recent extreme weather and notes that not only is the South West ‘connectivity poor’ with longer journey times, but also ‘resilience weak’. The network is not fit for purpose for Plymouth as the 15th largest city in England with an ambitious growth agenda, the motion notes and calls for more commitment from the Government to act on the outcome of the rail study they have already promised and to deliver an additional route (known as the Dawlish Avoiding Line or GW2) to serve Plymouth, Torbay and Cornwall, west of Exeter. “All government agencies should be working cooperatively together to deliver the objectives of faster trains to the south west and a more resilient rail network overall: as opposed to agency-specific solutions that seek to protect some population centres whilst potentially

prejudicing long-term rail resilience into the south west.” The Council resolved to: • Call on the Prime Minister to expedite the study into the delivery of a fast and resilient rail connection to the south west and Plymouth and for this to be completed and published before the end of 2014. • Call on the Prime Minster to instruct the Department of Transport to immediately put Plymouth on the Department for Transport Strategic National Corridor. • Call on all residents across the peninsula to write to their MP to get them to support the provision of fast and reliable trains to the south west and press for them to attend the parliamentary meeting of the Rail Resilience Task Group • Call on the Department for Transport to • continued on next page

RAIL CRISIS Chamber survey highlights £1m a day cost to business

The results issued of a survey completed by over 340 South West peninsula businesses, conducted by Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, highlights the difficulties and costs faced by local businesses in light of recent travel disruption caused by severe weather and flooding.

The consortium also includes Plymouth Albion Rugby Club, SLM Ltd, the University of St Mark and St John Plymouth as well as the Ministry of Defence, and their training facilities will now be included in the England 2015 Team Bases prospectus, which is being considered by the competing teams.

• 75% of businesses are experiencing difficulties with the closure of rail links as a result of recent flooding and storm disruption • 66% of Plymouth businesses reported that the disruption has caused difficulties in winning new business

Bases on the approved list are not guaranteed to host teams, however they will be used to provide the competing nations with their Team Base options, many of which are currently undertaking visits of prospective bases.

• 89% of businesses reported that the disruption is affecting their ability to meet with business contacts directly by rail

• 35% of Plymouth businesses use South West rail infrastructure to get to and from other parts of the UK on a weekly basis Over 200 Plymouth based businesses participated in the survey, with results indicating that the majority are facing a minimum daily cost of between £100 and £1000, with others citing costs of in excess of £5,000 for each day that the Dawlish line is closed. Aggregating this figure for the 6,000 VAT/PAYE registered businesses in Plymouth, it is possible to assume a cost to the city’s economy of at least £600,000 each day, which could almost certainly rise to over £1m per day as the continued lack of a working rail line takes effect. When considering the entire South West peninsula in which over 80,000 businesses operate, the economic impact is much higher. David Parlby, chief executive of Plymouth Chamber of Commerce said: “It is very difficult to estimate with precision the cost to the local economy of the rail line closure at Dawlish. “However it is clear that the daily cost is significant and that businesses are suffering a great deal. More worryingly, because such a high proportion of businesses are finding it difficult to win new work outside the South West, the economic impact for the medium and longer term could become even more significant. “This Chamber will press relentlessly for an additional, fast and resilient rail line to be built connecting the South West to the rest of the UK. “I call upon all other businesses and political leaders in the South West Peninsula to continue making this case to central government until we succeed in gaining the

necessary commitment. With over 200 business responses from the Plymouth area, comments on the impact of the travel disruption by businesses included: “The South West has become the poor relation to the UK with all links having been severely disrupted over the last 10 years. It is time the Prime Minister spends time coming down here on business not just on holiday and realises doing business with such slow links makes life extremely difficult for an area that does not receive much else in aid either. It is probably quicker to get to Ireland from London than it is Devon and Cornwall.” “We feel strongly that long term, business investment in the South West will be affected which will inevitably impact on our business expansion. Something must be done.” “I see billions being invested in Thameslink, Crossrail and HS2 and less than 1% of this money would give the South West a resilient rail network reaching many parts of the region” The survey, which was circulated online as a result of the recent collapse of the Dawlish rail line, was sent out to other local business bodies to circulate to their members. Plymouth Chamber would like to thank Cornwall Chamber, Plymouth FSB, Devon FSB, Plymouth Area Business Council, Devon and Cornwall Business Council, Destination Plymouth, CBI Devon and Cornwall, IoD Devon and Cornwall, HotSW LEP and Cornwall LEP along with the town Chambers throughout Devon and Cornwall for their support in distributing this survey to regional businesses.

work with Network Rail, train operators, local authorities and the LEPs on a package of infrastructure improvements and options for increasing rolling stock capacity for the medium term. • Call on the Department of Transport to make a firm commitment to complete feasibility and groundwork with a commitment to extending a rolling programme of electrification from 2020 that serves the entire South West Peninsula Councillor Bowyer added: “Plymouth councillors have united for a long time to fight for better rail connectivity. With our partners in business and other local authorities, we had made some ground – lobbying for WIFI on trains as well as campaigning for early morning trains to Plymouth. We need to keep pressing our case.”

“ If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Plymouth’s sports facilities could be making another appearance on the world stage with key city venues in the running for Rugby World Cup 2015 Team Bases. A consortium of local sports partners, led by Plymouth City Council, put together a bid to be a potential Team Base before and during the tournament and organisers England 2015 has confirmed that the city has been successful in making the approved list.

• 26% of respondents reported that more than 75% of their annual turnover comes from outside of the South West

• 89% of Plymouth businesses view the level of investment in South West rail infrastructure as Poor‚ or Very Poor

Plymouth in line to host Rugby World Cup 2015 Team Bases

A Team Base must include an indoor and outdoor training facility, a gym, an indoor swimming pool and a hotel. These facilities must meet international team training standards and be located in close proximity of one another. Match venue location has also been taken into account. England Rugby 2015 requires up to 50 bases for use during the tournament. These will be confirmed mid-2014. Teams that could potentially train in Plymouth include Italy and Tonga, as well as three nations who have come through the qualification process, who are due to play matches at Sandy Park (Exeter Chiefs’ ground) for matches. Deputy leader Councillor Peter Smith said: “Great stuff! Plymouth’s sporting record is beginning to grow and our facilities are proving a great draw for teams wanting to combine hard graft with Britain’s Ocean City and all that if offers: great places to eat, drink, sleep and enjoy.” In 2012 a number of Olympic teams and individuals chose the city for their pre-Olympic preparations including the Canadian diving team, Ghana, the Lithuanian dive team as well as some individual diving competitors from Mexico. Councillor Smith added: “We want to show Plymouth as a confident and proud city and by working together; these partners are helping us cement our reputation. A lot of hard work has been going on behind the scenes between the partners and while this news does not yet mean a team training here is in the bag, it clearly puts us in the running. We’ve got to be in it to win it!” Professor Cara Aitchison, Vice-Chancellor of the University of St Mark and St John said: “The University is pleased to partner in sport initiatives that have such wider economic impact. After the Olympics Games and the Football World Cup, the Rugby World Cup has the most significant economic impact of any major international sport event and is therefore of great potential economic benefit to Plymouth and the wider region.” Maurice West, Director or Plymouth Albion Football Club said: “It’s wonderful news. I’m sure that many of our supporters will be really excited about the possibility of having world class players train here in Plymouth and it is exciting for Plymouth Albion to have the opportunity to be involved in the build up to this celebration of the best the game has to offer.”

Royal Marines anniversary spectacular at Brickfields The Royal Marines have announced details of a four night visual and musical extravaganza this July to mark the 350th anniversary of their formation. The RM350 South West Proms will be hosted by Plymouth Albion Rugby Football Club (RFC) from Wednesday July 16 to Saturday July 19. The event agreement has been signed by both organisations and tickets for the high profile public event are now on sale. RM350 South West Proms is one of the main events to be held in the UK to mark the 350th anniversary and is the Royal Marines’ flagship celebration in the South West to honour the long and proud relationship they have with Plymouth. It is expected to attract more than 18,000 spectators across the four nights, bringing together the local, regional and national community alongside the Royal Marines for a spectacular and unique occasion. With military precision and flair, the celebration will capture the sense of occasion the Royal Marines are renowned for. The stadium will be abuzz with music and

celebrations will be breathtaking, so we urge people to get involved.”

Her Majesty’s Band of the Royal Marines will lead each night’s proceedings, with support from local bands and impressive military displays from the Commando Recruiting Team. Looking to the sky, it is hoped there will be a dramatic Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm historical flypast and a firework display.

Louise Uncles, Plymouth Albion’s marketing and sales director added: “We believe this will be both an extraordinary and unprecedented event. “The celebration is fitting for the Royal Marines’ milestone. Plymouth Albion RFC is at the heart of the local community, having hosted a mass of Military events here, it was fitting that we were selected to host.

It will be a ticket only event, with thousands of tickets now on sale and available to the public. Pricing has been purposefully set to make the occasion as accessible to the local community as possible, with a 25 per cent discount being given to all Plymouth residents and Royal Marines, serving and retired.

“It gives Plymouth Albion immense pleasure that this prestigious event will open their doors to people from the local community and beyond.”

Plymouth Albion RFC has pledged the ground for free to the Royal Marines, beyond the running costs, which means all proceeds from the event will go to charity. The Royal Navy and Royal Marine Charity and Plymouth Drake Foundation are the chosen recipients. Major General David Hook CBE, of the Royal Marines, commented: “This year is a major milestone for the Royal Marines and we look forward to marking the occasion in the city.

COMMUNITY PERFORMANCE IS PLANNED The communities of Devonport and Stoke are running a project at Stoke Damerel Church to produce Benjamin Britten’s Noye’s Fludde in May. Two performances for the public will be staged on May 10 at 7pm and May 11 at 3pm with tickets £5 for adults, children 5-12 £2, four and under free. Trefor Farrow will be the musical director and conductor with Lucy Luxmoore providing school’s musical support. Organisers are actively seeking the participation of local primary and secondary pupils along with interested members of staff, as well as many other singers and musicians. Event co-ordinator Marilyn Goldsbrough said: “We are hoping this will be a large and dynamic community event which will prove a great deal of fun! “It is envisaged that much of the preparation work could be done in situ, with guidance offered by both Trefor and Lucy. The individual musical parts are not too onerous, and chorus parts are relatively simple. A full rehearsal prior to the performances will take place in the church on Saturday May 10. Noye’s Fludde was last produced by Trefor Farrow at Devonport High School for Boys, and has not been performed in Plymouth for many years. A copy of the script/libretto will be available for those interested. Contact Marilyn Goldsbrough as soon as possible on 01752 564847/07890165524 or e-mail marilyngoldsbrough@hotmail.com

Musical post needs filling

There is a 13 member RSCM affiliated choir who sing everything from Rutter to Faure. The church’s 3 Manual Hele Organ is the oldest in Plymouth. The new director will have a great impact on the continuing music to enhance worship, particularly in the current vacancy for a rector. Exhibition of the works of Emily Speed at Arts Centre An exhibition of work by Emily Speed is taking place at Plymouth Arts Centre from March 22 to May 25. Emily works with drawing, installation, film, performance and artists’ books to consider the relationship between the body and architecture. In previous works she has responded to particular buildings and sites; layering materials and creating spaces for herself, other performers and audiences. For this installation at Plymouth Arts Centre, she focuses on the littoral zone, the space between the high and low water mark, and again layers texture and images to divide physical and psychological space. She began this piece of work by visiting the South Devon coastline. Observing beaches as a site of constant change and regeneration, she related this back to human efforts at building and creating territory; forming an idea for a filmed performance at South Milton Sands (also known as Thurlestone Sands). Now edited, looped and integrated within the installation, multiple projections hint at the attempt, by a locally recruited group of volunteers, to build a temporary suburb. Battered by the wind and fighting with the customised and awkward windbreaks they hammer away in a Keaton-esque fashion to create a

Isolated in old age: the Guild hopes not The Plymouth Guild questionnaire featured in last month’s edition of the Plymouth Shopper asked a few simple questions about getting older in Plymouth.

By George Plenderleith, Chief Executive of Plymouth Guild

If you’re over 50, and have completed the questionnaire or are thinking of doing so, the answers you provide give the Guild a real insight into the things you like doing and what challenges you’re facing as you get older.

you tell us to help shape the Ageing Better bid for the BiG Lottery at the end of April. Our findings will also be shared to help inform the development of local decision making and services.

The questionnaire covers the following topics:

Finally we ask if and how you would like to get involved in future work on Ageing Better Plymouth. If you’ve completed our questionnaire or plan to, then you are already involving yourself. There may be other ways you’d like to take part and, if so, we’d like to hear about them.

Activities and your community: you might think there’s enough going on in your area or across Plymouth to keep you busy and entertained. We’d like to hear about what you do with your week, so we can see what you like doing. We ask about the gaps too – if there are things you’d like to see more of, or just don’t seem to be on offer in Plymouth at the moment, let us know. There may be a whole range of reasons why you don’t get the chance to go to the things you want to do. We want to know what holds you back– it could be that there isn’t enough information about what’s going on or that what it is on is too expensive. You might not be able to get to an activity, or not want to go on your own. You might have a health condition that prevents you from getting out or have caring responsibilities that limit time for you and the things you like doing.

If you didn’t get round to the questionnaire last month, and you have access to the Internet, you can complete it by typing this link into your Internet browser: https://www. surveymonkey.com/s/YM25G7S. If you would prefer to complete a paper copy, please contact Plymouth Guild and ask to speak to Jo Atkey (jo. atkey@plymouthguild.otg.uk) or Jill Palmer (jill.palmer@ plymouthguild.org.uk) both of whom can be reached on Tel. 01752 201900

If getting out and about is a problem for you, the Guild would like to know. If you are able to get out and about as much as you want to, they would like to know how. There may be alternative forms of transport that we need to think about.

‘Life changing’ advice helps city couple Advice Plymouth advisors, information assistants and caseworkers deal with a huge range of problems every day. The stories that they hear are often examples of complex difficulties and distress. Everyone starts each work day hoping for the same thing: successful resolution to clients’ problems. Our Energy debt caseworkers aim to achieve 200 successful grant payments for clients every year. This January has been busy. Big Energy Saving Week helped to remind the pubic of the services we provide and mid-winter has been taking its toll on heating systems. I asked the team to tell me about a client that they helped this January. Meryl lives in Plymouth with her husband Tom, who is disabled. At the beginning of the year the couple found themselves in financial difficulty despite Meryl working long hours.

Plymouth City Council is inviting people to share their views on options for improving the A386 Tavistock Road from Derriford Roundabout to William Prance Road.

The scheme has been shortlisted for funding from the Heart-of-the-South-West (HotSW) Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the body responsible for allocating funding for large-scale transport schemes across Plymouth, Devon, Torbay and Somerset. A preferred option, outlining more specific details, needs to be submitted to the LEP in April and the Council wants to get public feedback on the potential schemes it is considering. Plans for the William Prance Road junction include extra lanes for general traffic on Tavistock Road and William Prance Road and new sections of bus lanes to ensure faster and more reliable journey times for public transport. Four potential schemes have been developed for the

The debt caseworker to pick up the case, Dan, applied on Meryl’s behalf to two separate funds and was delighted that both applications were successful.

Then the couple’s boiler broke.

Meryl remembered that a friend had received advice from our drop-in about an employment problem and

Our volunteers are trained to understand and separate the individual factors playing into each problem. The volunteer who spoke to Meryl recognised the couple’s needs and referred her to our energy debt caseworkers.

Meryl received a grant for the cost of a new boiler (£3900) from British Gas as well as a payment of £2030 from the EDF Energy Trust. She phoned Dan the day they were told that the applications had been successful to let him know the outcome and to say that the grant payments would ‘change her life’.

The problems were beginning to affect their sleep and their relationship with friends and family.

Their energy bills were sky-high. Tom’s needs meant that the heating had to be on in every room and their heaters were inefficient and costly. Although they had spent carefully, money following Christmas was scarce. The last thing they needed was an unexpected cost to blow their budget. After searching online for suggestions as to how to get out of the spiralling situation, the couple were left more confused by different websites and offers of costly payday loans.

roundabout, which include options to improve the existing roundabout, to remove the roundabout and replace it with a signalised crossroads and even to build a new flyover. Before deciding which of these to take forward as the preferred option, the Council is launching a four-week consultation to get views from the public. Consultation leaflets will shortly be sent out to residents and businesses in the Derriford area with a feedback form and pre-paid envelope. Exhibitions were also being held where staff were available to explain the options and answer questions. The results of this consultation will be a consideration in determining the preferred option, along with other factors such as the impact on the wider road network and the environment, cost and value for money. Subject to the HotSW LEP providing final approval for funding, it is expected that construction of the scheme would start in 2016. The construction period will depend on which option is taken forward but work is likely to take about 12 months. For more information about the scheme and copies of the consultation leaflet visit the Derriford Transport Scheme page on the city council’s website at www. plymouth.gov.uk. Copies of the leaflet can also be requested by calling 01752 668000.

hundreds of audience members and a professional judging panel to win a place at the national grand final. The winners will be decided by audience votes as well as the judges’ marks.

Along with other impressive acts, Sam has made it through to the regional finals of the UK’s only singing competition specifically for teens and pre-teens, and will now be performing live showcases of the competition.

Sam, who performs with the stage name of SamP, will have many friends and family in the audience at The Corn Exchange and hopefully cheering him on to the Grand Final at the O2 Arena in London.

TeenStar is a national singing competition searching for the UK’s best teens and pre-teens singers, singer/songwriters, rappers and vocalists of all genres who perform either covers or original material.

Sam, a pupil at Devonport High School for Boys is no newcomer to performing. Starting at the age of eight – when he was given a guitar for his birthday – he has become a popular local act who regularly takes to the stage both locally and has even travelled to Covent Garden in London.

Thousands of hopefuls entered TeenStar nationwide and hundreds of auditionees queued patiently on the day for their turn to impress the judges. Those who made it through the audition stage will now take part in a live regional head-to-head battle at The Corn Exchange in Exeter on March 30 alongside the best talent in their area. They’ll be performing in front of

Chris Grayston, events co-ordinator for TeenStar said: “We are looking to find an act that has something unique to offer, another Birdy or Luke Friend who can go all the way, with both the ability to deliver a strong live performance but also potential to become a professional recording artist. There is so much talent out there I’m sure we can find that star again!” The latter stages of the competition will provide acts with the opportunity to impress many guests from record labels, agencies and the entertainment industry as well as judges from BBC Introducing, national radio and regional press with judges becoming more prestigious as the competition progresses. Work to start on new homes in Mount Gould Building work is set to start on one of the Councilowned sites set aside for desperately-needed homes.

go up, while wages remain the same. It’s incredibly difficult for people to get on the housing ladder and find good quality homes to rent or buy.

The former Astor Centre development at Dartmoor View, Mount Gould is the first site to see construction begin as part of the Council’s Get Plymouth Building and Plan for Homes initiatives.

“We can’t just let this be other people’s problem. If we want to be a brilliant cooperative council, we need to take the initiative, which is why we have put up our land for homes to be built. I released this site in February 2013 and in that time we have worked in partnership with AJM to design a scheme, consult the community, get planning permission, transfer the land, and let the build contracts - all within 12 months.

The initiatives aim to bring forward more home building in the city at a time when the city faces a chronic shortage of affordable homes. The proposed development, designed by AJM Building Design Ltd, will provide 12, one and two-bedroom affordable homes which will be managed by Astor Communities Housing Association. They will be delivered by local development company Aster Homes and managed by its sister company Aster Communities. The development will be built by contractors Oakley Builders, who estimate the contract will mean work for 40 people. Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet member for Finance, whose portfolio includes housing delivery, said: “This is a great day for us and a great day for families who have been waiting – some times for years – for a home they can call their own. “There are 10,000 people on the housing waiting list; the cost of living continues to

Ward councillor, Mary Aspinall added: “Creating homes is a complex mixture of satisfying a desperate need, but also bearing in mind the views of local people as well as working positively with developers. This positive, proactive planning approach shows we can achieve the right balance and provide the homes we desperately need.” David Luke, Aster Homes regional development director, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Plymouth City Council and Oakley Builders on this exciting project which will revitalise a site that’s been disused for some time. “We have considerable experience of delivering high-quality new affordable homes to suit customers with a diverse range of needs and requirements. We’re very pleased to be bringing all that expertise to this project.”

At least the frogs are thriving in the storms! Spring is coming!... or so say some of my friends, a bit optimistically if you ask me. At the time of writing this in mid-February, it’s only the lengthening days that are hinting at Spring coming – the weather’s still definitely not in the mood for lightening up. Hope it’s better when you’re reading this! One good reason for longing for those warmer, sunnier Spring days is so we can get out into the garden and enjoy ourselves. But just now it’s not so enjoyable… is yours like mine? Two or three months of high winds, rain and neglect have really done some damage: washed out beds that seem to have lost at least an inch of topsoil in the torrents of rain; broken bamboo stems; a few tiles embedded in the lawn; and an as yet unplanted plum tree, which we bought at Plymouth Garden Centre in January. Not to mention the mud-bath that used to be (albeit laughingly) called a lawn, down by the kids’ slide. The only thing that seems to be thriving (apart from the weeds, naturally) is our community of frogs. I have no idea where they go in November, but around the middle of February they’re back, offering my kids a late night nature-fest as they do what frogs do with each other, resulting in a pond full of eggs - so full, in fact, that it looks like a giant bowl of tapioca. Yugh. That shallow pond, by the way, is a wildlife pond – at least that’s my given reason for the fact that it gets no maintenance whatsoever. Having said that, it really does work and it’s a treat for the kids to see creation unfolding in the frog’s life-cycle. Just need to keep our toddler out of it, and also encourage her not to taste the tapioca. Again, yugh.

when I made a last ditch effort to save the fence with ropes tied to the house. Trampling over the borders wasn’t much of a concern at the time, I was more focused on staying upright and wondering why the rest of my family were nicely tucked up in bed while I was getting soaked. Those ropes are still in place because I’ve not had the weather to get out and secure the fence, so Postie daily runs the gauntlet of neck-high ropes. Best get the fence fixed, and that’s where the Shopper will come in useful. In this feature, and elsewhere in this publication, you’ll find trades and services advertised who can usually help with a whole range of garden and home related problems and projects. If you’re like me, you’re possibly thinking, ‘I’ll get round to those jobs myself when I have time/ when the rain stops/ when it’s less windy’ etc. If your wife has heard this many times before, like mine she’ll be adding ‘when the cows come home!’ So rather than wait for the cows to meander up your garden path, try calling a few of our advertisers and asking them for an estimate. Whether you need a new shed (not for cows), windows and doors fixed or replaced, trees and gardens seen to, soggy electrics sorted or new slates on your roof, there’s bound to be someone who can help in the Shopper. It’s always a good idea to get two or three estimates to compare, and try asking them for a referral if the job’s a big ‘un – choosing the right person for the job is half the battle in getting a great result.

Apart from the flower beds and the vegetation, structurally we pretty much survived, which is a bit of a miracle as our house is old and exposed to the full force of the south-westerlies. (Aaaarrrr). We still have (just about) a very good green metal fence down one side of our garden in Keyham, but only just. The bed next to it is partly filled with trodden down bulbs, the result of a frantic late night in howling winds

SPECIALISING IN REROOFING SHEDS

Despite being nearly blown out of our wellies in the past few weeks, we’re delighted to herald the onset of spring, with a very fresh take on how to make the most of your home, whilst benefiting the homes and lives of a local community. Pete Graham of the East End Development Ltd is pioneering a remarkable venture that is utilising local skills to support charitable and community work in the area of Prince Rock, Cattedown and Coxside. As a leading figure in the not for profit company, which was given charitable status in 2008, Peter Graham knows all too well the difficulties in sustaining and developing all the good work begun by the charity. Initiatives to support youngsters, like the Play Schemes, run by Sutton Play, the upkeep of three community centres housing youth clubs, luncheon and befriending groups for the elderly and many community based services, all require money to keep them going. As most charities are well aware, whilst initial start-up money can be raised by applying for funding to large bodies like the Big Lottery Fund, Plymouth City Council and Regeneration Funds, the challenge is how to maintain and grow services by generating income themselves – no easy task for a bunch of already hard working volunteers. As an ex hairy builder with more than thirty years’ experience in the trade, Pete is putting together a team of like-minded individuals, with skills in building, home improvements and maintenance, who will not only provide their customers with an excellent, reliable service, but will plough all the profits back into the charity for use by the community groups.

From its three centres and in partnership with others the East End Development Trust helps to deliver around 35 services each week, including children’s Playdays, Playrangering activities, coffee mornings, fitness and IT clubs, luncheon clubs and young people’s groups. These services are accessed by more than 3500 residents each year, each paying very little, if anything for the activity provided, so monies need to be found elsewhere to enable these groups to continue. Customers can expect a fair price for quality workmanship, and can be satisfied that they can also be part of a bigger ongoing project to enhance the lives of the inhabitants of the East End. MONEY MA££ERS with Tony Jopson

Lord Reith would turn in his grave... In advising people on their debts I always emphasise the need to deal with ‘priority’ debts first i.e. those that if not paid will impact most significantly on life, such as mortgage, rent, council tax and utilities.

their prayer that good seed sown will produce a good harvest, that everything offensive to decency and hostile to peace will be expelled and that the nation will incline its ear to those things which are lovely, pure and of good report and thus pursue the path of wisdom and virtue”

One other maybe slightly unusual item to include is the TV licence. Failure to have a TV licence can lead to a fine of up to £1,000 and failing to pay any such fine or to keep up payments for a TV licence can also result in perhaps disproportionately severe legal action.

Which got me flicking through an average sample of BBC TV programmes today. Many contain scenes that seem to be a long way off from the original charter.

The TV licence originated in 1946 when TV’s began replacing radios. It was issued by the BBC to enable viewers to hear radio and view BBC1 (later this was extended to BBC2). Today you need a TV licence if you watch any free to air TV, although the money collected still goes to support the BBC services. With the multitude of other satellite TV channels abounding these days some might argue as to why they should pay the TV licence fee to the BBC at all.

Which got me to looking into the origins of the BBC and its licence fee. The BBC was founded in 1927 by people with a vision to promote peace and publicise things of good report. Placed as part of the dedication of BBC headquarters in 1931, the entrance hall embodies the following inscription: “To Almighty God. This shrine of the arts, music and literature is dedicated by the first governors in the year of our Lord 1931, John Reith being director general. It is

Of course you can still find some good stuff but I wonder what the founders of the BBC would think of its state today; my suspicion is that they would be shocked to the core! How many items in the average BBC news broadcast these days for instance could be described as “lovely, pure, of good report and thus pursuing the path of wisdom and virtue”? I think that if they saw the content of some of the BBC’s rival channels today its founders would understandably think the country had sold out to those things that are the very antithesis of the BBC’s dedication inscription. This little insight into history does remind me that Great Britain gained its title through the work of God honouring people such as John Reith. Maybe it’s worth looking at the history of the other institutions and key people that made Britain great and investigate their origins? I’ve slightly strayed from debt and insolvency matters this month but I hope you’ve been enlightened – I certainly have!

Moorland Garden Hotel’s growing support for Primrose Foundation The Moorland Garden Hotel near Yelverton has announced a number of initiatives to help grow support and raise funds for this year’s selected charity, the Primrose Foundation. A collection tin in the hotel reception will encourage visitors to make donations whilst bookmarks placed in the bedrooms will help to educated guests about the Foundation and its Breast Care Centre at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. The charity will benefit from fundraising at various hotel events throughout the year, including a Sparkles and Spitfires Dinner Dance being held in August to mark the hotel’s 80th anniversary. Other plans include a stall selling Primrose Foundation merchandise at the Moorland Garden Hotel’s ‘Planning your Garden’ day in April. Staff are also planning a sponsored cycle and walk to raise funds. Announcing The Primrose Foundation as this year’s charity, Andrew Jenkins, general manager at the Moorland Garden Hotel said: “This year we asked the staff which charity they would like to support and The Primrose Foundation was a clear favourite. “A member of the team has personally been affected by breast cancer and has been incredibly impressed by the services and care offered at the Primrose Breast Care Centre. We’ll all be digging deep to help make a

difference and we hope that we’ll be able to make a significant financial contribution as well as raise awareness of this fantastic local facility.” Sue Hobbs, chair of the Primrose Foundation, said: “We are delighted to be the Moorland Garden Hotel’s charity of the year and we look forward to a fantastic 12 months of fundraising and awareness raising events. “Thanks to all the staff and guests for their support. It will make a huge difference to the lives of the men and women that the Primrose Breast Care Centre helps each day.”

The Primrose Foundation is a breast care charity, based in Plymouth, raising funds to maintain and improve the existing equipment at the Primrose Breast Care Centre in Derriford Hospital. The catchment area includes much of East Cornwall, much of West and South Devon, as well as the city of Plymouth. The original Primrose Appeal helped to fund the development of the centre as a ‘one-stop clinic’. Over the last 10 years The Primrose Foundation has continued to raise funds in order to enhance the facilities and services provided.

In a strange twist of fate Carla, who moved to Plymouth, was driving past her local IMO car wash at the exact time Tania was collecting her prize. The first prize of the Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec 3dr was up for grabs as part the of 12 Days of Christmas promotion by online parenting website Mumsnet. In addition, IMO, who wash 10 million vehicles in the UK every year, gave four runners-up a year’s worth of car cleaning.

She was my best friend at school, but I haven’t seen her since we both moved away from the area. What a fantastic day.”

Tania’s family car was showing its age and she needed a new set of wheels for her and her two young children, Aidan aged six and Cerys aged two.

Tania and Carla pictured on their last day at school

Tania, 34, and Carla, 35, both attended Poltair School, St Austell, where they were best friends,

I thought I would go for it - I never expected to win.”

Plymouth History Festival programme is launched The programme for the Plymouth’s 2014 History Festival has gone live and already features nearly 100 different events. The festival will take place from May 1 to May 31 and aims to bring a number of historical events in the city under one banner as well as provide residents and visitors with a focal point for celebrating and discovering Plymouth’s unique heritage. Local organisations have been busy pulling together and confirming their event details since late 2013 and the full programme can now be seen at www.plymhistoryfest. wordpress.com. The festival caters for all ages and interests and events will be held in many different locations, not just in the city centre but also around the Hoe, the Barbican, the Royal William Yard, the Millfields and in many of the suburbs. Venues range from church halls and guildhalls to civic buildings and historic houses. The festival will kick off with the opening of the city’s flagship World War I and ‘Three Towns’ centenary exhibition, ‘Plymouth’s Great War: Three Towns United in Conflict’. The show is one of a number of ways in which the city will be commemorating 100 years since the start of the First World War, as well as celebrating 100 years since the three towns of Plymouth, Devonport and East Stonehouse became one, throughout 2014.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “The Plymouth History Festival launched last year and was a great success – bringing many different organisations and societies together under one programme and providing a huge variety of opportunities for people to discover more and learn about the city they live in and come to visit. “This year is even more significant, with two big centenaries to remember and many of the festival events will highlight these key moments in history. “It’s a huge achievement to go live with such an extensive programme already and I’m sure more events will be added as we get closer to May.” The History Festival programme also features displays, family-friendly activities, talks, presentations, guided tours and walks and a series of special one-off events. Many are free although a lot of the events require advance booking. Contact details for all the event venues can be found on the website at www.plymhistoryfest.wordpress.com/ People can also stay up-to-date with festival developments at www.facebook.com/plymhistoryfest and www.twitter.com/plymhistoryfest. Full details of the World War I commemoration and Three Towns celebrations can be found at www. visitplymouth.co.uk/plymouthremembers.

With the clocks going forward at the end of the month we are drawing ever closer to the lighter mornings. I am Claire Bull and along with Chris Curran we are the Police Community Support Officers for Peverell and Hartley. We also cover the area of Central Park. This month PCSO Joe Downton will be writing about the Police Cadets from Beacon Park Police Station. Joe is an experienced PCSO who has been working the West of Plymouth patch for over seven years. Joe has recently taken over the running of the Police Cadets along with PCSO Chris Pooley. They have started to PCSO Claire Bull introduce the Cadets to new experiences in order for them to progress their skills. Operation Smart For now I would like to give an update about Operation Smart which is a week long drive to reduce acquisitive crime. The Neighbourhood Policing Team at Beacon Park Police Station were able to assist PC Chris Collins in a number of proactive initiatives across the west area of Plymouth, covering Peverell, St Budeaux, Beacon Park, Pennycross, Ham, Barne Barton and North Prospect to name a few areas. Officers participated in a speed monitoring operation which we were able to use specialist equipment to monitor the speed of motorist travelling along Peverell Park Road, Weston Mill Hill, Fleetmoor Road and Kings Tamerton Road to name a few. Officers identified a vehicle which was travelling at 45mph on Peverell Park Road, the driver was subsequently stopped and issued with an OSCO.

ON THE BEAT News from the Neighbourhood Policing Team What is an OSCO? An OSCO (Officer Seen Conditional Offer) is a scheme which has been put into place to give the police discretion to offer drivers who commit selected road traffic offences the opportunity to attend a course as an alternative to potential prosecution, or the conditional offer of a fine and penalty points. The offence is reviewed and it may be decided that the offender could benefit from attending a course as an alternative to receiving a fixed penalty or summons. Devon and Cornwall Police is committed to road safety and we seek to educate rather than prosecute when possible and participate in the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme. PCSO Martin Critchlow organised an initiative which focused on looking for vehicles with defective lights. I have spoken about defective lights in previous articles and the importance of being seen, particularly in these dark winter months. The responsibility remains with the driver of the vehicle to check that the car is in full working order before he/she starts their commute. As a result there were in excess of 30 vehicles within a few hours on Outland Road which were identified with defective lights. Drivers were issued with an OSCO and words of advice were passed. While we continue to conduct proactive policing work, the week-long initiative allows the local neighbourhood policing team time to focus on specific operations as well as our day to day policing duties. Operation Smart

runs at different times throughout the year. This allows us time to tackle different seasonal issues. Beacon Park Police Cadets – By PCSO Joe Downton West sector police cadets were set up in 2012 by PCSO Dave Harris, after seeing the success of other schemes which were being run in the Plymouth area. Since then the West Sector Cadets have gone from strength to strength and we regularly have 15 Police Cadets attend our session who often come from all over the city. Unfortunately being a Police Cadet no longer means that all of the young people who attend our unit will eventually go on to become police officers. However, what the scheme aims to do is deliver an insight into what life is like as a police officer and increase participant’s knowledge of all things policing. Being part of the scheme allows the cadets to build their self confidence and develop life experiences, which will aid any future application should they decide to apply to become a Police Officer when they are eligible. Much of a cadet’s time is spent in local communities and we have recently been used to assist the neighbourhood teams with crime prevention letter drops in the Peverell and Hartley area. They have also assisted with community based events in North Prospect and will be attending Plymouth Half Marathon later in the year to provide assistance and support. Such is the schemes popularity we currently have a waiting list of young people waiting to join. However,

should you know someone who wishes to join or has an interest in Police Cadets, I recommend they log onto Devon and Cornwall Police website and click on ‘get involved’ on the menu on the left of the page and tab down to Police Cadets where you will find more information on the scheme. Woodside’s invaluable work

are kept very fair to ensure a fast turnaround of stock and very loyal customers. With branches from Plymouth to Liskeard and Plymstock to Tavistock, there’s sure to be one waiting for your unwanted items that’s near you. These branches all sell the aforementioned £1 Save&Spay stamps, which are redeemable at 15 participating vets. For shop locations ring 01752 337552

As the only organisation in its area taking in up to 17 different species, the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust often struggles to cope with the sheer number of pets needing help. Its Elfordleigh sanctuary regularly houses over 200 animals, in all stages of life and health and its vet bill frequently exceeds £10,000 per month. With over 40 years of welfare experience behind her, all unpaid, founder Carole Bowles MBE has no doubts about what the answer is.

“Although re-homing will always be a major part of what our charity does, simply recycling pets just isn’t enough. Accidental and ill-considered breeding is preventing us from doing so much more in our community, and we need to get the neutering message across.” Pets come to the Sanctuary for many reasons and one of the most currently pressing is house repossession. With most rentals being ‘no pets’ properties, worried owners turn to Woodside for help, only to find they have to go on a waiting list. Carole continued:“During the

Homes wanted... summer’s serious surplus of kittens

warmer months, the cat population explodes and it’s not unusual for us to have 90 kittens on site, in addition to 60 plus adults. With a mum and six kittens needing up to seven adoption offers, it can take weeks for that pen to be vacated. If cats arrive incubating flu, and we have to quarantine, sometimes we get gridlocked for months. This is very bad news for those we have queuing up outside - and all this misery can be easily avoided if owners would only neuter their pets.” Thanks to a coalition between Woodside and the RSPCA Plymouth Branch, there is help available through a Low-Cost neuter scheme. Owners on benefit, tax credits or state pension can use the scheme and, for all owners, Woodside sells veterinary savings stamps too.

Anxious to get all aspects of animal welfare across, Woodside sends experienced staff into the community to promote responsibility and, of course, neutering advantages. As well as the obvious, the operation can improve behaviour in all pets, and eliminate the womb infection pyometra, which can be lethal if undetected in Angie Quin and John Gordon, preparing for their Community Welfare Round un-spayed bitches. Another bonus of

Woodside’s van out visiting, is that many emergency pets have arrived over the years, often from owners overwhelmed by personal circumstances. Cats and dogs, rabbits, Guinea pigs and mice etc, all receive quality care before being released into loving homes. Even an ASBO ferret recently adopted by HM Prison Dartmoor had a home check first! For those unlikely to leave the sanctuary, due to age or infirmity, cosy retirement units are provided and an extended family of staff and volunteers ensure a flow of exercise and affection is enjoyed. In the outside paddocks, surrounded by lush countryside, are ponies, pigs, sheep, goats and chickens. These tend to arrive when loss of land or illness intervenes, but a pig in a tower block has been known.

Of course, if a new addition to your family is what you want, Woodside’s arrive neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated. Plus, if your circumstances change and you can no longer keep it, Woodside will ALWAYS take their pets back, no matter how many years have passed. For all information, including pictures of adoptable pets, visit www.woodsidesanctuary.org.uk. The Sanctuary is open 1-4pm daily, until 7pm on Thursdays, and weekends by appointment only. If you’re ringing, 01752 347503 is answered between 11am -5pm. Why not use this opportunity to ask for a complimentary newsletter and find out for yourself the extent of this local charity’s work.

Funding for the Neuter Scheme is mostly raised through grants and legacies given for the purpose, but day to day work is continued through public generosity, Friends of Woodside membership (£15 per year) and 12 charity shops. With one premises accommodating a spay clinic and several on cheaper rate, short term leases while landlords seek permanent tenants, Woodside ensures it gets a maximum return on its retail side. Gog and Magog return to city As everyone will probably know by now, the huge chalk giants that last stood on Plymouth Hoe in the 1600s are about to make a comeback and should be in place by September this year.
Back in July 2013, the artist Charles Newington contacted me after reading my blog post about Gog and Magog. Charles was behind the Folkestone White Horse which stands above the entrance to the Channel Tunnel in Kent. Charles told me of his idea to put the huge chalk drawings back on the Hoe and asked if I could help.

Writer Derek Tait reports on plans to re-create the figures of Gog and Magog on the Hoe. Derek has had many books published including Plymouth at War; Images of England: Plymouth; Saltash Passage; Memories of St Budeaux; Plymouth Hoe; Mount Edgcumbe; Plymouth Tales From the Past; Plymouth Through Time; Saltash Through Time and Rame Peninsula Through Time. Derek’s website can be found at www. derektait.co.uk After taking photos and measurements (the land in front of the Citadel is 67 feet!), Charles prepared some preliminary drawings, which can be seen here. I suggested that Charles contacted Chris Robinson and that set the ball rolling. The idea was approved at a meeting of the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership in September 2013 and then Chris arranged a meeting with the council on 6th December which was attended by Tudor Evans, David Draffan, Charles Newington, Malcolm Beskin (Charles’ associate) and Chris Robinson. Booklets were prepared to show the work involved and what the finished project would look like. The whole idea was welcomed and agreed to and work should begin this summer. While Charles was visiting, I took him over to Mount Batten Pier so that he could see the piece of land from a distance and I also took some photos in case they were needed for later press reports. By January, although I’d known about the project for six months, nothing at all had appeared in the newspapers so I decided to post the story on my online blog.

Part of the presentation package presented to Plymouth City Council showing the giant figures in front of the Citadel

There was still no reaction so I guided the Herald to the blog who revealed the story ‘exclusively’. There was no mention in the

paper (what’s new?) of where they’d got the story, or the photos, from but there, at last, it was in the news. On the whole, the story was met with great excitement with the majority of people taking to the idea. The giants, when finished, should prove a huge boost to tourism which will also increase trade to nearby businesses as well as all over Plymouth. Dutton’s Cafe will give the perfect vantage point to see the giants while on the Barbican, perhaps, the Gog and Magog Inn will no longer have people coming in asking ‘what does your strange name mean?’ I think the whole project should make Plymouth famous worldwide and hopefully will become a huge attraction.

Legally Speaking

Story behind the story of Exit Darcus Kerry Cole is a regular contributor to the Plymouth Magazine, writing about the arts scene in Plymouth. In 2010 she published her art-style book, The Purple Veil, and she has just published her first novel, ‘Exit Darcus’. She was recently interviewed on Cross Rhythms radio for the Art of Living show, and Ian Pilkington asked her some pertinent questions to give our readers more of an insight into the journey of Exit Darcus...

intricately with the luring mysteries of the paranormal and supernatural. It’s a bit of an emotional exposé that goes in search of all the secrets that lie beneath the surface in people.

What is your new novel Exit Darcus all about? Well, it’s a modern story about relationships, woven

Time to talk travel

I guess you can tell that’s been well-rehearsed, but it’s the best way I’ve found of introducing the story without giving too much away – there are some real potential ‘spoilers’ that I have to avoid. I’ve been told by several readers that it has a mysterious and magical feel to it and that reading it is like watching a movie.

Plymouth City Council is offering residents in Peverell, Plympton and Plymstock a chance to win one of five £100 gift vouchers this spring as part of its Plymotion green travel programme.

Why did you write it, where did your inspiration come from? I wrote it as an extension of a creative journey that I’ve been on for several years that included a piece of theatrical drama and an art-styled poetic book called The Purple Veil. Both of these works explore mankind’s quest to find love.

Plymotion aims to improve walking, cycling and public transport links and encourage people to try greener, cheaper and healthier ways of getting around.

Who would Exit Darcus appeal to... and why? Men, men, men! And of course women! And anybody over the age of about fourteen. Young adults are enjoying it, as are men and women of all ages. So it’s good for general readership, really. Because it’s listed on Amazon under ‘Paranormal Romance’ I worry that men may not go for it, which would be so wrong - but one male reviewer on Amazon said, ‘men you need to read this book’.

One part of the project – Plymotion on Your Doorstep – involves travel advisors visiting local residents, chatting about how they get around the city and providing advice on the different travel options available to them. The team are able to give residents one-to-one help with planning their journeys as well as information about various travel incentives on offer. Plymotion on Your Doorstep started in 2012 and since then the team have knocked on almost 29,000 doors in Mount Gould, St Judes, the East End, Keyham, Devonport, Stonehouse, the city centre and the Barbican and spoken to more than 5,000 people.

This is the outline: ‘Beautiful, yet troubled, runaway, Alice Delaney, trespasses onto the grounds of the ancient estate of Beulah, in an attempt to escape her external circumstances. A safe haven to relieve her inner demons proves harder to find, but is shown to be possible by the disclosures of a sexy young artist who is willing to strip his soul naked before her. With its many twists, turns and layers, this book is compelling reading and is powerfully unlocking.’

A young guy who read it, said to me that the stuff the main male character goes through stands as a beacon to show how to avoid the pitfalls he encounters. He said to me, ‘Kes goes through things so I don’t have to!’ It gets into a deeper language than just the physical dimension of relationships. Someone told me it is one of the most emotionally

charged books they have ever read. It’s real and raw, yet redemptive. It’s also laced with humour. Several readers have said they have been laughing one minute and in tears the next. It does carry deep understanding into how men and women relate to each other - either for good or for bad. One reviewer said ‘ideal book for adults and teenagers alike as it deals with social topics and has great insight into how men and women tick.’ Two big themes in your book are people getting into unhealthy relationships, and going through unhealthy paranormal experiences - do you think those are common problems nowadays? And is there any hope? The book begins with one of my main characters in a difficult state because she has got into some paranormal practises that have left her feeling oppressed. Yes, I do believe people can get into unhealthy paranormal experiences and relationships that have consequences. We all have freewill and free choice in what we allow into our lives and what we open ourselves up to. There is hope, but you have to read the book to find out! Where can we get hold of a copy? Exit Darcus is only available on Amazon. It comes as a paperback or on Kindle. For more information on how to get hold of Exit Darcus visit www.amazon.co.uk You can hear Kerry’s Interview on Cross Rhythms 96.3fm and online at www.crossrhythms.co.uk/radio/ console/plymouth Sunday March 2 at 12 noon; Saturday March 8 5pm; March 11,14,17, 20 and 26, all at 10am.

This year’s programme is the biggest yet, with the team hoping to visit more than 30,000 properties in Plympton, Plymstock and Peverell. Before they start chatting to people they would like to get an initial picture of how people currently get from A to B and how aware they are of alternative travel options.

For more information visit www.plymouth.gov.uk/ plymotion, email plymotion@plymouth.gov.uk or call 01752 668000. • Plymotion on Your Doorstep is the residential ‘personalised travel planning’ programme being delivered as part of the Plymotion programme. Personalised travel planning is when individuals or families are provided with personalised information about the variety of travel options they have for the regular journeys that they make.

On Sunday February 16 the storms lifted and the sun shone. It was a delight to go around the Hoe in the sunshine. It reminded me of how privileged I am to live in this part of the world. The sunshine seemed to lift everybody’s spirits. There does also seem to be a hint of spring in the economy. Finally the housing market seems to be picking up. During the previous housing boom I came across large estate agents who were pushing people to use conveyancing firms (not necessarily solicitors) of their choice. These firms were often a long way from Plymouth. The agent received an extra payment from the firm or, they were effectively owners of the firm. Apart from the estate agent’s branch in Plymouth they had no connection with the City. I have heard stories of people who said that they felt pressurised to use the conveyancer the agent proposed because they were told the sale could not take place or they would not get a mortgage. We came across a number of occasions where they were also more expensive than us. I would point out however, that cheapest does not mean best. Buying a house is the largest financial transaction that most people undertake. In my view there can be no substitute for independent advice from a local solicitor who you meet face to face. Apparently moving house is the most stressful event after bereavement and divorce. At this time do you want to be speaking to an unknown person on the phone a long way from Plymouth?

Residents are being asked to take part in a 10-minute survey, with a chance to win one of five £100 high street gift vouchers. Households included in the survey will shortly receive a copy through their letterbox or be invited to complete it on their doorstep. The surveys can also be completed online at www. plymouth.gov.uk/plymotiononyourdoorstep. Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport said: “Plymotion on Your Doorstep has been really well received by residents and lots of them have said they’ve found chatting to our advisors helpful. The surveys are a really important part of the programme as they help us to understand what shapes the way people travel and what advice and measures will be most useful to them. The information we gather also helps when we’re making future decisions on transport provision in the city. I’d therefore really encourage everyone who gets a copy of the survey to fill it in and send it back to us.”

Why local knowledge is so important when property is involved

I am currently involved in a complicated case concerning easements and rights of way. Things were overlooked at the time of the purchase. I once acted as a mediator in a neighbour dispute which arose over a poorly drafted document. The people concerned had spent thousands of pounds in legal fees not to mention the stress of court proceedings. All this was over how a person was allowed to get to his garage.

Lorna Damella, corporate fundraiser for St Luke’s Hospice pictured with the college students

College students raise funds for St Luke’s

Could these things have been avoided if the buyer had been able to sit down with the solicitor and check the plans of the property when they bought? I don’t know as I was not involved at that stage but I suspect the answer is yes. We provide an initial free interview. Why not take advantage of this and see us before you put the house on the market or make an offer. We give you detailed information on price and local factors that we think may be relevant.

Hospitality and event planning students from City College Plymouth have put their newly found skills to use by raising over £301 for the college’s nominated charity, St Luke’s Hospice.

This was then displayed and sold within the College.

As part of their hospitality business enterprise module, four different teams of students from the BTEC Extended Diploma in Hospitality Events Management course organised three Mondays in December where they prepared a variety of produce including three different soups, mulled apple juice, brownies, shortbread and even homemade Christmas cards.

Students from the course involved in the charity fundraiser, presented Lorna Damella, Corporate Fundraiser for St Luke’s Hospice with a cheque for £301.67 on a recent visit to the College.

Arctic challenge raises over £5,000 for charity Three military junior doctors from Derriford Hospital faced the challenge of a lifetime taking part in the Arctic Winter Race in February.

Speaking from Lapland, Flight Lieutenant Michael Thompson, said: “I think the reality of the challenge is finally coming home to us all. In a few minutes we are off for the compulsory equipment and survival briefing and then there will be time for a ‘last supper’ before setting

Representing all three of the armed services, Flight Lieutenant Michael Thompson, Surgeon Lieutenant Alex Bamford and Captain George Graham, spent time in Lapland to prepare to take part in the gruelling Arctic Winter Race, Rovaniemi 150. The challenge saw the trio run/trek across 150km of Northern Finland, pulling all of their necessary kit in a traditional pulka, in aid of a leading UK charity Combat Stress, which specialises in the care of Veterans’ mental health and is currently supporting more than 5,200 ex-service men and women.

I often quote the Biblical principle on our radio programmes that ‘now these three remain faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love.’ The brave trio of doctors pictured in Lapland

off in the early hours of tomorrow morning. “Whilst it is a little ‘warmer’ than predicted at about -10C, the snow continues to fall and visibility is poor, but the general feeling is one of excitement and optimism. Obviously we’ve also scouted out where we hope to sink a few celebratory Lappish beers in a few days from now! “We would like to thank our friends,

colleagues and patients at Derriford Hospital for all of the support we’ve received so far. “We are delighted to have raised over £5,000 so far for our charity, Combat Stress.

This is taken from the excellent passage in 1 Corinthians 13 on the subject of genuine love. However this spiritual journey starts with genuine faith. Faith is defined as something or someone that we trust in, cling to and rely on.

“It’s certainly not too late to donate, and we continue to be very grateful for any and all donations.”

‘And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.’

If you would like to support the trio, donations can be made via their justgiving page: www.justgiving.com/ TEAMS/ARCTIC-ULTRA

This statement from the book of Hebrews in the Bible is for me a foundational principle of the Christian Faith. So what is faith?

I’m tempted to begin by defining the terms (simple = straightforward, not complex; faith = the assurance of things hoped for; Christ = the Messiah, Jesus the only begotten Son of God). Therefore by semantic definition, simple faith in Christ is a straightforward certainty that Jesus — who we have never seen — truly exists and can be trusted with our eternal destiny. But I find that definition unsatisfying on an emotional and spiritual level.

On an emotional level, simple faith in Christ is the kind of trust a child has in a loving parent. It would never even enter the mind of a child raised in a loving home to ask if he or she will be fed, clothed, cared for, protected, comforted, forgiven… a child simply knows this and lives accordingly. And yet simple faith in Christ requires a more adult definition in order to satisfy the spirit. In the words of the old Don Francisco song, ”it’s not your food or drink, it’s not the way you dress… it’s to hear the Lord and to answer ‘yes’”. Obedience is the key. Everything in us cringes at the mere word obey and it immediately sparks an attitude of rebellion. Such is our fallen nature. But seen through the eyes of simple faith… to obey is the single greatest expression of trust. And it’s an expression of love towards the only One truly worthy of it, the only One who ever died to show us how much He loves us. And the amazing thing about obedience is: the more you do it, the more faith grows, because every time, every time, this kind of simple faith is rewarded… directly, unmistakably, from His hand. My wife and fellow traveller on the amazing journey of life, Kerry Cole, has just finished her novel ‘Exit Darcus’ which is available on Amazon with the sub title ‘faithfulness just got very sexy’. The book is about the incredible love that can be experienced through true faithfulness. A love that doesn’t use people as commodities, but experiences a love that is rock solid and deep and secure. As the late Larry Norman said ‘our own opinions can make us blind’. Doubt your doubts and listen to your heart. You are here on earth for a purpose and there is only one unique you. Life can make sense even in the tough times.
