Karen Scowcroft has developed the practice and it now boasts three treatment rooms, three podiatrists, and a beautician.

Hard skin, cracked heels and corns are reduced, but the treatment doesn’t end there. Your feet are then soaked in a luxury foot bath, gently exfoliated and your lower legs and feet massaged. The treatment ends with an application of podiatrist formulated nail polish. The ultimate in foot pampering.

Andrew’s frying high in top fish and chip awards Andrew Hillier of the Barbican’s Harbourside Fish & Chips has been named as one of the UK’s top six fish friers after he was shortlisted for the Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year Award as part of the 2016 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish. Andrew, 22, from Plympton, will now have to compete at the highest level as he goes up against the five other contenders ‘fishing’ for the top prize. Andrew’s colleague nineteen year old Lisa Lishman also competed as one of the top 10 young fish friers, but didn’t make it to the final six.

the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) Training School in Leeds, Yorkshire. Their skills were truly put to the test as they demonstrated their preparation and frying techniques before undergoing personal interviews and assessments in front of four separate judging panels. The six finalists will now receive a mystery judging visit at their respective workplace, combined with another test of their skills and knowledge whilst in their own working environment. This final round of judging will determine the first, second and third winning places which will be announced at the 2016 awards ceremony at The Lancaster London Hotel in January next year.

To get to this stage and secure a place in the coveted shortlist, the friers have undergone a gruelling judging process involving telephone interviews and exam questionnaires.

Celebrating the best young fish friers across the country, The Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year Award encourages the younger generation in the industry to nurture their individual skills and talent to become positive role models for other young people working in the fish and chip sector.

They were also subject to a rigorous judging day at

£500,000 makeover for city landmarks Marathon swim A £500,000 programme of safety and maintenance works across several of Plymouth’s best known landmarks will get underway in the autumn.

The programme of works include resurfacing the children’s pool at Mount Wise, stabilising the cliff face at West Hoe and demolishing the old fruit store in How Street.

gardens below to be brought back into use.

Repairs to Elizabethan and Merchant Houses –These include extensions/upgrades to electrical systems including alarms. The repairs also include structural timbers which due to the age and status of the building require specialist treatment and conservation.

Council Leader Tudor Evans approved the funding for the project and said: “We want to make sure Plymouth remains an enjoyable place to live and visit so these works are absolutely essential.

Replacement lift at Tinside –The lift within the Lido needs a major overhaul. Regular repairs have been undertaken to keep the lift in operation, but this year the repairs indicate that replacement is the best option for future years.

“We have a limited pot of money so we need to do as much with that money as we possibly can, so we look after the assets in Plymouth that mean the most to people.

Mount Wise pools repairs –The complete surface to the children’s pool needs to be replaced due to ongoing damage from the elements in the winter months.

“We already have climbers up on the cliffs at West Hoe repairing the adverse effects of the elements so this area can be brought back into use.”

How Street demolition – The former fruit store in the Marquand building on How Street has been closed for several years and is in a dilapidated condition, although boarded up the building is vulnerable to trespassers.

The full programme of work includes: West Hoe cliff stabilisation – The cliff face to the east of West Hoe Park has begun to erode and break away causing rocks to fall to the shrubbery and public footpath below. A programme of stabilisation is required to prevent further erosion and allow the footpath and

Retaining walls at Crabtree Close – Retaining walls are in a poor condition and need to be stabilised. The works will be finished in time for the start of the summer season in May 2016.

Puttin’ on the Glitz for St Luke’s Bigger, better and glitzier – the St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth charity ball returns to Plymouth Hoe on Saturday September 19 for a 1920s themed night of glamour and goodwill. ‘Puttin’ on the Glitz’ promises a night that Gatsby would be proud of, with gorgeous costumes, sing-a-long entertainment and a delicious threecourse dinner to throw you back to the roaring twenties. The University of Plymouth has again offered the use of their graduation marquees free of charge for the event on Plymouth’s seaside landscape - adding the moonlit splendour of views of the Sound to an already enchanting schedule. Senior events Fundraiser at St Luke’s, Emma Winter said: “It’s

and charity fete to raise funds for Snowdrop Appeal

A Royal Navy engineer and a Babcock worker will be taking the plunge in September to raise money for Derriford’s Snowdrop Appeal. Warrant Officer Leon Harvey, who is propulsion manager on HMS Argyll and Malcolm Lyons, who works in the Dockyard, will be taking part in the annual Dart 10k swim on September 5. They are also organising a charity fete at the William Sutton Community Hall in Miles Mitchell Avenue, Crownhill on September 12. The pair chose to support the worthy cause officially known as the Jasmine and Central Delivery Suite Snowdrop Appeal - because it is a local charity. The Snowdrop Appeal aims to raise £300,000 to create a new specialist suite for bereaved parents of still birth, miscarriage and early baby loss at Derriford. The new unit will be sited away from the busy maternity area to help ease the trauma and loss for bereaved parents.

colleagues and clients. The event was extremely well organised, very high standard of food, great selection of beverages, and fun entertainment.

More than £115,000 has been raised so far and Leon and Malcolm are hoping to add a significant sum to the appeal.

Bringing the razzle-dazzle to the evening’s entertainment will be performances from the Plymouth Gilbert & Sullivan Fellowship, a glitzy disco, casino tables and food provided by award winning caterers, Fosters Events.

“The venue, red carpet welcome, flowers and lights – together with the stunning setting overlooking Plymouth Sound – set for a truly impressive event. Don’t forget your pocket money; as the auction is bound to have a few things worth bidding for”.

It’s a fantastic marathon swim journey from the town of Totnes down the Dart estuary to Dittisham. The course is marked not by inflatable buoys but by landmarks - the Cormorant Tree, the white rock, Sharpham boat house and the Bow Creek.

Paul Philpott, managing director at Fresh Air Studios Ltd hosted a table at St Luke’s last ball in the graduation marquees: “We had an amazing time at the St Luke’s Charity Ball, entertaining both

The Dart 10k was the first, and is arguably the finest, 10k swim on the open water calendar.

It’s supported by volunteers from the local and swimming community who make it special, and is bookended by social swims put on by local wild swim groups. The charity fete, which takes place between 2pm and 4pm on September 12 will feature local crafts, cakes, books, toys, raffle, face painting and bouncy castle.

Congratulations to the winners of the Pennywell Farm competition in our July issue. First prize went to Carol Uren from Weston Mill. Four runners up prizes went to Aliean Anderson from Cattedown, Claire Conlon from Plympton, Colin Bucknell from St Budeaux and Emeline Shears from Lipson.

Auction of promises to raise funds for Nepal relief work An auction of promises is being held in September to raise funds for a charity which is helping the victims of the devastating Nepal earthquakes. The auction is being held at Plymouth Argyle’s Pyramid Suite on Friday September 18, starting at 7pm. There will be live music, pasties, a bar and lots of other fun activities, and of course, the auction.

PLYMOUTH MOBILITY CENTRE

A range of prizes and promises of a wide range of values are sold to the highest bidder at the auction.

Various businesses and individuals have donated the lots which range from a flight in a two-seater plane, free lawn mowing, dinner cooked at home, through to a night in a top hotel. One of the organisers, Owen Jones said: “The charity Sahodar is closely linked with Mutley Baptist Church. The church has several members with a real passion for Nepal and through a series of events have developed close links with Sahodar – a local community charity in Garambeshi – http://sahodaruk.weebly.com

“They set up Sahodar UK as trustees to make it easier to support their work. The church has, for the last few years, sent mission groups out there to help with the work but this year they were out there in the Spring and returned home only days before the earthquakes hit. “They were based within a couple of miles of the epicentre for part of their stay and knew the communities that were devastated. “Since then Sahodar has been put in charge of much of the region’s clear up, relief and rebuilding work and continue to be involved now,” he added. Due to currency and other economic circumstances, £1 in the UK is worth the equivalent of £4 to Sahodar’s work in Nepal and it is hoped that the auction will provide much needed funds for the region. Stunning ocean films - al fresco

The Ocean Film Festival World Tour returns to the UK this autumn after a highly successful first Tour in 2014. On September 6, Plymouth will host the tour’s inaugural open-air screening under a sea of stars at Mount Edgcumbe. As the sun goes down, audiences will be able to relax on the lawn while soaking up the atmosphere of the 18th century Cornish gardens, before settling in for a captivating evening of ocean-themed films set against the stunning backdrop of the Orangery positioned by the bay. Designed to mesmerise and enthral, the Ocean Film Festival World Tour showcases more than two hours of sublime footage taken above and below the water’s surface. The films document the beauty and power of the ocean, and celebrate the divers, surfers, swimmers and oceanographers who live for the sea’s salt spray; who chase the crests of waves; and who marvel at the mysteries of the big blue.

A scene from Arctic Swell - one of the Ocean Film Festival screenings

Heart-stopping shots of big wave surfing and adrenalin-inducing scenes of divers swimming with white sharks will leave audiences on the edges of their seats. The films also encourage viewers to dive head first into ocean culture as the festival is filled with touching interviews and insightful narrations from the characters whose lives are inspired by the ocean. Each of the festival’s films conveys a deep respect and appreciation for the world’s oceans and the

Fire service family’s success by degrees Double celebrations took place in the Harvey family as Brian and Patrick received their fire engineering degrees from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). Both men, from Trenewan in Cornwall, studied part-time for their undergraduate degree while working full-time for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. They travelled north four times a year for two week study blocks, all with the support of their employers. Fifty-seven year old Brian has worked for the fire service for 38 years and is currently a Fire Safety School Manager,

for the fire services Training Academy based in Plympton. Patrick has been a firefighter at Camels Head Fire Station, in Plymouth, for five years. Brian said: “I’m thrilled and excited to have graduated, especially at the same time as my son. As an ‘oldie’ I never thought I would ever get a university education. I feel very lucky and privileged to have had the opportunity. I would encourage any person contemplating taking on study later in life to put any doubts behind them and give it a go. Age is no barrier; in fact it can even be an advantage. It’s your attitude that counts.” “I have devoted most of my working life to the Fire and Rescue Service,” said Brian. “I knew I had a solid background in this field, but there was still much to learn. I felt this degree course would give me new knowledge, widen my horizons, deepen my understanding and improve

my professional standing. It didn’t disappoint.” He added: “In the short term I hope that I will get the opportunity to apply my new skills at work, particularly when new buildings with fire engineered solutions are submitted for approval. In the long term, and with so many opportunities available in this field, who knows where this degree will lead me.” Twenty-nine-year-old Patrick added: “For me this all started when I was helping dad get his head around some of the first year maths subjects. Eventually I thought

“I found the course to be different every day. It’s been fascinating, inspiring, thought provoking and challenging but it’s been worthwhile. I believe I have already benefited professionally and personally from the information and experiences gained at UCLan and believe it will be of great benefit throughout my future career in the fire service.”

Starting his new role on October 12, Jon will be responsible for delivering the Business Improvement District’s five year business plan from 2015-2020 and will work alongside Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, Destination Plymouth and businesses located within the City Centre BID boundary.

I might as well be doing this for myself, so I did. Four years, plenty of books and hours in front of the laptop later and I find myself lucky enough to be able to graduate with the one who started it all.

Plymouth City Centre Company has invited businesses in the city to take part in a diagnostic event which will identify ideas, challenges and opportunities facing the West End of the City Centre. Chaired by The Academy of Urbanism, a national body of leading individuals involved with the design, development and management of great places, the event will give businesses the chance to have their say to help deliver short-term improvements. The Academy, who has worked with many cities across the UK and Europe, sent a team of five Academicians to the West End during August to set a longer-term direction for the area in order to achieve a vibrant, mixed-use part of the City Centre. Funded by the Plymouth City Centre Company, these plans will feed into the council’s Plymouth Plan, a strategic plan for the city. Douglas Fletcher, Chair of Plymouth’s City Centre Company, said: “The West End has changed so much in recent years. The gravity and footfall of the City Centre has moved leaving with it a trail of vacant retail units. To help rejuvenate this area of the city we have invited a team of specialists to help us identify its potential.

A masterplan is needed to build on previous work and to develop a clear sense of what the city centre needs to do to make it the best it possibly can be over the next few decades and to use this to market the city to prospective investors and developers.” The consultants will talk to partners and businesses to get a clear flavour of their future plans and aspirations for the city centre, ahead of preparing reports and suggested site and project proposals. Bernie Foulkes, LDA Design Board Director, said: “Plymouth is unique amongst UK cities in that it possesses a remarkable post-war city centre, laid out according to Abercrombie and Watson’s 1943 Plan. “This sets Plymouth apart in a good way, but the time has come to take

Cabinet Member for Finance and city centre champion, Councillor Mark Lowry said: “As part of our award-winning Plymouth Plan, shoppers, retailers and visitors gave us very clear opinions about making more of the area’s heritage, strengthening shopping as well as making better links to surrounding areas.

Education Training

New term of optimism in Plymouth schools As September hits us once again, families across the city have bought uniforms, books and stationery, shined new shoes – possibly for the first and last time – with the greatest enthusiasm to start well and with the best intentions, writes Karen Pilkington.

boundaries in group learning,

Its encouraging to discover that these efforts are mirrored by existing teachers in our schools, as well as aspiring professionals and the bodies that are there to train them.

And Gillian explained that schools are now looking at Progress 8 as a way of measuring development in a much fairer way between schools across a range of 8 subjects including Arts, PE, Technical subjects and Music.

In Plymouth we are fortunate to have a long history of teacher training. The University of St Mark & St John’s constituent colleges, St Mark’s and St John’s were both founded around 1840 in London by two eminent Victorians, James Kay Shuttleworth and Rev Derwent Coleridge, son of the famous poet. Both men were part of a circle of novelists, philosophers and politicians and were influential in developing new methods of learning, including the teaching of phonics, as well as being social reformers, believing that pauperism could be eradicated through education. There has been much in the press regarding the failings of current education, which, coinciding with suspicion about the many changes that are being made to GCSE’s and A levels, can cause concern to parents, as well as disillusionment within teachers themselves. Reformers zeal However, an interview with Gillian Golder, recently appointed as director of teacher education at Marjon, shows that the same reformers zeal that Marjon’s was birthed in, continues today in a desire to work with teachers to develop and enhance real opportunities for all young people. Gillian is personally committed to the respect of individual learners within diverse learning communities, having spent years as a teacher of Physical Education with a special interest in inclusive practice Her own journey from full time teacher to going back to school for further qualifications in professional development in education makes her uniquely suited for her new role. The new University post means that she will oversee initial teacher training provision for early years, primary and secondary, as well as develop partnerships with local schools, to support and encourage ongoing research and professional development amongst their staff. Latest research into education is looking at the many different ways learning takes place, and is advocating that top down teaching is not only difficult for children to follow, but also teachers themselves! New think tanks are now advocating that the best learning and development takes place over considerable time – suggesting that teachers are enabled to take professional development courses lasting up to a year to really equip them to bring the best possible techniques and information back into the classroom.

Studio schools in Plymouth are pioneering theoretical learning combined with the practical world of work for 14-19 year olds – engineering at UTC; leisure, tourism, sports and event management at the Plymouth Studio School which opens its doors this September; and the Stoke Damerel Studio School scheduled to open in 2017 to train those interested in health care and medical professions.

Traditional academic study are also being encouraged towards best practice with a reform of the GCSE system starting in 2016, returning to exam based qualifications. Gillian Golder, director of teacher education at Marjon

So many subjects – IT, computing, modern languages, music, maths and science are constantly developing, not just new ways to discover and learn, but new data, new theories, and new discoveries from professionals in their field. In this fast paced, changing world, teachers need to be committed to their own learning in order to bring the latest research back to their students. Gillian is able to work alongside all our different styles of schools to support and develop the remarkable people committed to teaching our children. She explained: “As well as new research developing curriculum, we also have access to the latest thinking on developing behaviours in young people to enable learning, and support self-disciplined, harmonious environments where learning can take place”. “Teachers also need more training to evaluate and assess attainment so that results achieved can be a fair representation of the students ability, and be a fair measure when compared nationally.” This is good news for parents who are all too often fed horror stories in the media about unruly behaviour in schools, results scandals and fears of failing to teach adequate skills. Many ideas which were on the fringes of education are now becoming mainstream. Many schools in Plymouth are experimenting with more personalised learning where students can choose for themselves which topic they would like to focus on; combined learning, whereby projects provide the focus for teaching key skills; and learning for life – skills to prepare young people for the adult world. As a city there are now many choices for our young people, comprehensive schools and academies, selective schools, faith schools and free and studio schools – encouraging them to pursue alternative educational routes if these seem more suitable. The choice is impressive – the School of Creative Arts catering for 4-16 year old is pushing

Gillian added that by getting recruitment right, schools will be able to draw upon their greatest resource, the teachers themselves. This all starts with selecting the right trainees to become qualified teachers. If you know you want to teach then the undergraduate three year degree with qualified teacher status in primary and secondary education is the best route. But not every one makes their mind up before doing a degree so Post graduate certificates in education and school direct routes into teaching are available. New programme School Direct is a new programme designed to attract talented professionals into the classroom. There is a salary option for those who are already skilled, for example in computer science, medicine, banking, technology, as well as options for experienced classroom assistants to continue working whilst training as teachers. However you train to become a teacher, with Marjon, trainee teachers will be mentored by existing teachers and spend far more time in classrooms, consistently in the same class, which is great news for parents with children at primary, and where the trainee can provide additional learning support, enable smaller group work, one to one support and all the other vital requirements in a class of 30. School Direct and traditional routes into the profession can all be accessed right here in Plymouth, together with support for all our teachers to develop their own research, practice and innovative ideas alongside the demands of their working life. We should be very proud of our University of St Mark and St John Plymouth. The drive of its founders to make a positive difference in the in which we, by educating the next generation, is alive and well in Gillian Golder and her colleagues. And the talent that is being released into our schools is of the very best calibre. Parents and children in Plymouth now have many options before them, but can rest assured that whatever they choose, they can be confident that others share their desire for the best that education has to offer in the 21st Century.

Education Training

If you are a young person who wants a different experience from school, then knowing what your options are and getting the right information is essential to planning your next steps. Although you need to stay in education or training until your 18th birthday, that doesn’t mean that you have to stay on at school. Young people have several choices: you can continue to stay in full-time education at school; attend college on a full-time, vocational course; continue your studies part-time at college while working or volunteering; or you can apply for an apprenticeship, which allows you to earn while you learn. College business student, James Lillie, 17, knows the importance of getting advice on the options available. He explained: “When I was at school, I just assumed it was a process of school, sixth form, then university, because they didn’t really inform you about other options like college or apprenticeships. I’m just glad I have the confidence now to be able to make those decisions and

what can City College Plymouth offer you? take advantage of the opportunities available.” City College Plymouth offers free drop-in information evenings so that you can get the advice you need on vocational BTECs, apprenticeships, professional courses and university-level Foundation Degrees. Level 3 BTECs are the equivalent to studying three A Levels and can be a practical route to university or higher-level training for those who are looking to move on from school.

At the college you can study a wide variety of subjects from bricklaying to hospitality, hair and beauty to plumbing and everything in between. You can apply even if you haven’t achieved a grade C or above in GCSE maths and English. Our professional, vocational and technical study programmes enable you to study these part-time alongside your chosen course in a format which is tailored to your subject area; so all the

work that you do is directly supporting you in your future career. The college has excellent links with local employers and our industry-standard facilities ensure that you receive the best true-to-life, vocational training and that you leave us work-ready, with great employability skills. The college’s award-winning careers team will also be onhand to offer high quality, impartial careers advice, and college staff will be there to discuss the support which may be available to you, including funding, childcare and travel costs. Attending a drop-in evening is a great way to get the information you need to help you make the right decision on your future. City College alumni include city achievers like Michelin starred chef, Anton Piotrowski; city innovators like Princess Yachts’ managing director, Chris Gates and city leaders like polar explorer, Antony Jinman. So why not find out where City College could take you? At the drop-in events, you will get the opportunity to: • speak to experienced careers advisors for free impartial advice and guidance • explore which of our professional, vocational and technical study programmes or apprenticeships is right for you • find out how you can improve your GCSE English and maths grades alongside your chosen course • talk to our knowledgeable staff about funding and learning support. Education Training Two mums with an ausum vision for an innovative new school Two Plymouth mothers are leading the campaign to create an innovative free school in the city to meet the needs of children and young people who are on the autistic spectrum. Adele Marshall and Jane Dennis both have children with high end autism and have struggled for a number of years to find suitable education for them. After 18 months of campaigning, rallying support and bringing together a team of dedicated volunteers with a wide range of educational skills and other experience, the vision for the Ausum Academy Plymouth was realised.

Notre Dame and its head, heart and hands approach to education Notre Dame is Plymouth’s only comprehensive school for girls.

day, reminds everyone of the importance of faith at the heart of all we do.

Part of a worldwide network of schools founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame, this is a Catholic school that welcomes all those who want to learn in a supportive, caring and aspirational environment.

This year the school sees its 150th anniversary of its founding in Plymouth, and there is a lot to celebrate!

Notre Dame offers a broad and balanced curriculum, with increasing choice and focus as students’ progress through the school, alongside a wide range of extra curricular activities. From sports clubs and drama to music, art and science there is plenty to choose from. Older students benefit from a vibrant Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme as well as a whole range of trips and visits including a triannual Enrichment Week, and regular Dimension Days. An ongoing commitment to providing students with the best of facilities can be seen in the modern 4-court sports hall, fitness suite and library complex, along with our newly extended classroom block. Notre Dame also benefits from dedicated drama studios as well as specialist technology and art workshops. The school Chapel, with its Angelus Bell ringing twice a

Notre Dame was judged by Ofsted in its latest inspection as being a ‘good’ school and a Diocesan Inspection rated us as ‘outstanding’. Girls from across Plymouth and beyond enjoy what the inspectors recognised as a ‘very strong family and faith atmosphere’ and are supported in their progress because ‘relationships between teachers and students are excellent’. This, together with ‘excellent spiritual, moral, social and cultural development’ means Notre Dame students are ready to make the most of their futures. In the past year, the school has seen students leave to take up a whole host of opportunities, including Oxford University, beginning work or starting apprenticeships. Whatever their plans, Notre Dame girls are prepared because of the school’s focus on education of the whole child: ‘head, heart and hands’. For further information, please call 01752 775101 or visit our website at www.ndonline.org

In a month’s time they will submit a 100-page document to the Department for Education in a bid to secure funding for the new free school. To stand any chance of success they need Plymouth City Council to commit to taking places at the new school and also have to provide evidence of the need for such an establishment. Jane said: “We have met with the local authority on a number of occasions and they do recognise that Plymouth does have a gap in its educational provision. We also have the support of around 120 families who have confirmed that their child or young person would benefit from a school like the Ausum Academy. “We would encourage any parents or carers who have children on the autistic spectrum to fill in our parent support form, which can be found on our website at www. ausumacademyplymouth.co.uk. “The more parents who complete this form the better chance we will have of securing the chance to present our proposals to the Department for Education,” added Jane. Adele said that they would also welcome the support of more volunteers who could help take the plans forward. “We would love to hear from people with experience in autism and education provision and especially someone with legal expertise to help with the whole legal framework.

Jane Dennis (left) and Adele Marshall...leading the campaign for a school specifically for children on the autistic spectrum

“We already have a dedicated core team supporting the initiative and have recently established a leadership team with particular expertise at secondary level.” Earlier this year the initiative received the backing of the Free Schools Network, a charity which helps individuals, groups and other organisations to establish free schools. The Network gave invaluable advice to the Ausum team and also provided funding for marketing and other activity. The Ausum story started around two years ago when Adele, who lives in Peverell, contacted Plymouth MP Oliver Colvile to see if he could help with the problems she was facing finding suitable education for her son. He suggested that Adele explore the possibility of establishing a free school tailored to the needs of youngsters with autism. Adele said: “He asked me if I would be prepared to lead the project and I knew if I didn’t do something, more and more families would experience the same problems as us.” Adele posted a petition on Facebook looking for support from other parents and carers and Jane contacted her to share the problems she had faced with her son. The pair soon realised that there were scores of families in the same position in Plymouth and decided to embark on the campaign for a free school. Jane, who lives in Plymstock, said: “It is estimated that as many as one in six of school age children in Plymouth are on the autistic spectrum - which is significantly higher than the national average. “Ausum will meet the specific needs of those children with autism for whom placement in a traditional special school for children with learning difficulties is not appropriate, but who nonetheless struggle to manage within a mainstream setting. “The aim is a specialist child centred provision that nurtures the child as a whole, using flexible timetables and therapeutic approaches in an autism sensitive environment to cultivate a students strengths, as well as develop social and emotional connections.” Adele said that the proposed school would cater for around 100 children aged between four and 19 and if they are successful in their bid for funding, would open in 2017. “It may come too late to be of significant benefit for our sons, but we have to fight on for families who are just coming to terms with these difficulties.”

Into the Light to be performed at Buckfast Abbey

A scene from Into the Light

Following on from last year’s lively adaptation of Godspell, Into the Light is a thought-provoking and beautifully written piece that will be performed at Buckfast Abbey from September 7 to 12 by the Torbaybased Unleashed Theatre Company. Based on St John’s Gospel, it follows a group of refugees fleeing from Eastern Europe in the late 1930s at the start of the outbreak of the Second World War, who as they travel tell the ‘greatest story’ on Earth. For Unleashed Theatre Company, this piece has real significance as it takes them right back to their roots. Martin Harris, the company’s artistic director, says: “It is great to be returning to the piece where in one sense Unleashed Theatre Company first began. This play was the very first project we ever produced 13 years ago. If you’d told me then that we would be doing community theatre in 2015 to the extent that we are now doing, I would never have believed you. “We recently premiered a brand new musical for children called Timothy’s Song, also performing it at Buckfast Abbey’s Storytelling Festival at the beginning of July; Into the Light will be performed in the second week of September. Earlier in the year we were awarded funding to run a community drama group for homeless people and anyone in recovery from addiction, which we run every week in Torquay. THE CHRIS COLE

Experience

Importance of teaching moral values in the home William Temple, the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1942 -1944, stated the following: “The Church is the only society that exists for the benefit of those who are not its member.” What does this mean? There are various interpretations, but let’s consider two. For some it certainly applies to what is recognised by many in the ‘public square’, that the Christian faith communities generate the greatest provision for social action and care outside of government departments in terms of voluntary time given, buildings and financial resource. This is a major reality and needs consideration as austerity within the public sector continues to bite. Another aspect of William Temple’s statement worth considering is the freedom to share why Christians do what they do in the ‘public square’.

At the time of writing this article a Christian teacher has made the headlines for the way he responded to being stabbed by a young student in his class. What has captivated the media is Mr Vincent Uzomah’s response to his attacker at the end of this traumatic experience. It is his personal faith which has captivated the media when they look at this traumatic experience. The 14-year-old boy who stabbed supply teacher Mr Uzomah, and bragged about the racially-motivated attack on Facebook, has been sentenced to 11 years detention. The boy - who cannot be named - stabbed Mr Uzomah, 50, in a classroom at Dixons Kings Academy, Bradford, on June 11.

was Mr Uzomah’s genuine concern for this disturbed student and his hope that he would now consider how he evaluates the rest of his life, having been given the prison sentence he has. Forgiveness was a major factor which Vincent, as a Christian, obviously understands, practices and ‘walks in’ and applies to his young attacker. The challenge for all of us is that we now live in a global village, which, when observed through international media, means we all experience events as never before. As soon as major things happen, we know about it. It can be challenging for those, especially the elderly, who have lived long enough to evaluate these changes after living through crises like the last World War. Whether it is the persecution of Christian Communities, especially in the Middle East, or violence on our

streets or in our schools, many ordinary, wonderful people are concerned at the way the world is going. As older citizens say to me, they are really concerned for the future. To sustain ourselves in challenging times it comes down to the conviction which undergirds our individual worldviews. It may come down to values and how we see life. Why are we here; what is life all about and what happens when we die? If we believe that there is no absolute morality, then the conclusion is that anything is permissible. The concern Vincent had for his attacker was that this child was obviously ignorant of so many things. The question raised by Vincent is whether it is the schools’ responsibility or that of us all as parents to engender the correct human values into our children? I think values, whatever we consider them to be, are best taught in the home with the parents lovingly taking responsibility for their children’s attitudes.

A number of changes are being made to bus services in and around Plymouth next month. Stagecoach will be taking over the operation of First South Devon on September 6 and is planning several changes to the network. Plymouth Citybus will also be reviewing its services as a result.

Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport and Planning said: “We welcome Stagecoach’s expansion within Plymouth and are pleased to hear about their plans for investment in the local bus network with a more modern fleet and particularly the purchase of new buses. “We look forward to working with the company over the coming weeks to help them deliver the reliable and good value services with regular frequencies they have committed to provide.” All areas will continue to be served by alternative services with the exception of Glenholt where the nearest service will be the high frequency 100/101 Park & Ride service from the George Junction. Also from September 20 there will be changes to bus departure points on Royal Parade with the introduction of two new shelters on the Theatre Royal side. Information on where to catch your bus will be displayed in all shelters on Royal Parade from September 13. Full details of all the changes and the alternative services to those that have been withdrawn can be found on the Council’s website www.plymouth.gov.uk/buses

Council agrees to spend £1.1m on improvements to disabled people’s homes in city Plymouth City Council has approved more than £1m to improve disabled people’s homes in the city. The total figure agreed under an executive decision £1,145,000 – means more than 170 homes in Plymouth will have a number of improvements including: • Stair lifts • Level access showers • Ramps • Improved wheelchair access • Accessible kitchens Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “As a council we are committed to doing all we can to improve the lives of disabled people and to help people live more independently. “I’m really pleased to be able to sign off this executive decision because the Disabled Facilities Grant enables us to make a huge difference to people’s lives. The grants mean we can make homes more accessible and give disabled people a better quality of life. “Last year we agreed 164 grants to help disabled and elderly people receive adaptations in their homes. This work helps people to live independently in their own homes, keeping them and their carers safe.” Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Cooperatives and Housing for Plymouth City Council said: “This work is so important – rather than having to look at providing new homes for disabled people it is much better if we can make improvements to people’s existing homes so that they can stay in their own familiar environment.” Plymouth City Council uses agreements set up across Devon and Cornwall to reduce the cost of good quality adaptations. Disabled Facilities Grants are offered to those eligible up to a maximum of £30,000. If you feel you could benefit from home adaptations please call the Major Adaptations Team on 307 303. Talented fine art graduate Andy secures residency at KARST Fine Art graduate Andy Cluer, from Plymouth College of Art, has beat off the competition to be selected for a residency at Plymouth contemporary art space KARST. Meet at Yelverton Golf Club Golf Links Rd, Yelverton at 7.30pm. For details visit www. thefillingstation.org.uk or contact Les and Di Wood 01822 854877.

Andy, 22, said: “I was over the moon when I was offered the residency, after submitting my work and going through the interview process. KARST is a really good space to carry on my practice. The freedom of the environment and international artists surrounding you are something you can constantly have a dialogue with.”

Carl Slater, gallery director at KARST, said: “From his degree show at the college, it was obvious that Andy had an excellent level of critical engagement with his practice. Over the last two years he has also been very proactive and visible as a young artist in the city. We sensed his hunger and eagerness to achieve good things and realised we could offer him the mentorship and development he needs to help him progress” Andy Cluer’s latest work, ‘Ou-Topos Ferrier, 2015’, features a pair of concrete structures, one physically destroyed by a sledgehammer. Aiming to represent failed utopian structures, it combines Andy’s interest in installation art, collage and sound, and was on display as part of the Best of Summer Show (BOSS) exhibition in the Gallery at Plymouth College of Art. On a ‘Greecy’ slope to disaster? As I write we’re well into another August of mixed weather in this country, which might unfortunately put off last minute would be visitors to the area. However, where it’s hotter, tourists are flocking; take Greece for example - Athens airport expects 25 million arrivals this year, up from 21 million last year. Greece is evidently preferred as a wonderful place to take the family, compared to resorts with more unreliable weather and resorts where terrorism has been a threat. But hang on a minute, Greece has a huge debt to repay. Wasn’t Greece recently defiantly protesting against the countries from whom many of these tourists come, about austerity measures levied on Greece as a consequence of its huge indebtedness? Wouldn’t you expect Greece to use its ‘holiday destination’ leverage to inflict some pain on its lenders? Well not really as it would be a real own goal by Greece; it can at least obtain some income from its holiday trade – if it effected such a protest, holidaymakers and their host countries might be annoyed and inconvenienced in the short term but ultimately they would simply holiday elsewhere and the Greek economy would be in further meltdown. So what about this situation in Greece where the country can’t possibly repay the debt it already has, let alone the further £86 billion ‘bail-out’ recently negotiated? Why would lenders continue to lend to a completely

For the past few years, Plymouth City Council and the Plymouth Dementia Action Alliance (PDAA) have been committed to making Plymouth a Dementia Friendly city. The National Dementia Friendly Awards 2015 has shortlisted Plymouth under the “Best Dementia Friendly Community Initiative” category. Ian Sherriff, chairman of the PDAA said, “Being shortlisted as a finalist for this award is in recognition for all the hard work, energy and passion that the PDAA membership and PCC has put in over the past four years. “Our work has also been recognised by teams of public sector workers and academics from Japan, Australia and latterly, Holland.” Councillor Ian Tuffin, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care for Plymouth City Council, said: “As a council we are committed to working with our partners to help Plymouth to become a more Dementia Friendly city. “We are absolutely delighted that Plymouth has been shortlisted for this award – this is recognition for every organisation in the city that has done their bit and agreed to become more Dementia Friendly. “This supports our aim of being a co-operative city where everyone does their bit.” The PDAA has an ever-growing membership of organisations from a wide variety of sectors across the city, such as: healthcare,

insolvent borrower? One might reasonably ask whether the lunatics have taken over the asylum. However, the alternative of NOT lending Greece further money opens the door for such potentially serious problems that evidently no one is prepared to risk it (yet). If Greece defaulted on its debt it would leave the Euro, and many countries and organisations would then have to realise huge debt write offs themselves. This would likely lead to other countries defaulting on their debts, the domino effect of which could be a global financial tsunami, the final result of which could be catastrophic. The balloon of debt therefore continues to be inflated and we continue to wonder if and when it will actually burst. I read that the Greek problem is partly caused by its citizens and Greek companies not paying over to its government all the tax legally due by them. Countries are made up of individuals and eventually the behaviour and morality at a micro level is evidenced on the macro stage.

For instance someone running a ‘cash’ business decides he or she is paying too much tax and it’s ‘not fair’ so they don’t declare all their cash takings; or maybe a builder offers a “cash job” to a customer without charging VAT. So a large corporate entity might also seek to avoid paying tax, with much larger scale effects. We all know this stuff goes on – and probably on a larger scale than we realise!

Plymouth City Council has a Dementia Friendly Toolkit to provide organisations with guidance and information on how to become more Dementia Friendly. Following a recent audit of PCC car parks, Plymouth is also on its’ way to having the first dementia friendly car parks across the city centre. At present, there are over 3,000 people with a diagnosis of dementia, living in Plymouth and this figure is predicted to rise to approximately 3,667 by 2020. So, it is vital to keep the momentum going and remember that, as Ian Sherriff said: “There is still lots more work to do so that ALL people with dementia and their carers in Plymouth can say ‘I am fully accepted and feel part of Plymouth.” Dr Shelagh McCormick, a GP in Plymouth and clinical lead for mental health in the Western locality of NHS Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (NHS NEW Devon CCG), said: “Being diagnosed with dementia can be a very worrying and

Settled and safe: a renter’s right Citizens Advice is campaigning for better protections for private renters. Private renters deserve a home that is settled and safe but currently are not able to benefit from the same protection as consumers of other goods and services. Emma Handley, CEO Citizens Advice Plymouth says “Currently private rented housing stock is a big issue for the city and through continued campaigning and support of Plymouth’s Private Rented Housing Charter, we aim to improve renters rights for the future.” The charter is available on the Plymouth City Council website. We believe that no renter should ever have to pay excessive or inexplicable fees for basic services. We want to see an end to extortionate letting agents’ fees. We believe that no renter should be subject to harassment or illegal eviction by rogue landlords. We want to see an end to retaliatory evictions when tenants complain about property in disrepair. Consumers have more rights to repair when leasing a car than renting a flat. They have stronger rights to refund when paying for goods than when renting a property. Taxi drivers are more tightly regulated than landlords. If you are renting a property, you do have the right to know how much a new home

is going to cost and should not be hit with unfair or hidden fees if using a letting agent. As of 27 May 2015, the Consumer Rights Act has made it an offence for letting agents to withhold information on fees in their advertising or in any other information given prior to signing a tenancy agreement. Renters can now report hidden fees to trading standards and letting agents could face a fine of up to £5,000 if they are not complying with the law. You do have the right to fair and transparent tenancy agreements. Your deposits should be protected in a government approved scheme. You have the right to report problems with rented property to the council or to trading standards and should not face eviction as a result. From the 1st October 2015, the Deregulation Act makes it illegal for a landlord to issue a possession notice within six months of an unfulfilled repair request as long as the tenant has reported the issue in writing and the local authority has served an improvement notice. For advice on housing visit Citizens Advice or Shelter at the Advice Plymouth drop in on Buckwell Street, call Advice Line on 03444 111 444 or visit www. adviceplymouth.org.uk NOTE Plymouth Charter for Private rented housing can be found on the following link http://www.plymouth.gov. uk/homepage/housing/privatehousing/ plymouthcharter.htm

Paul Davis, (left) chairman of the Devon and Cornwall Polar Society pictured at the opening of the Shackleton Room with Walter Combstock and Jon Morcom, directors of the Duke of Cornwall Hotel

Room dedicated to memory of Shackleton Members of the Devon and Cornwall Polar Society met at one Plymouth’s leading hotels for the dedication of a room to a great explorer. Many had visited the Duke of Cornwall Hotel just one year earlier when a much larger crowd attended a conferenceto celebrate the Centenary of the departure of the Endurance from Millbay Docks, on its journey to the South Pole. The explorer in question was Sir Ernest Shackleton who had stopped overnight at Plymouth’s Duke of Cornwall Hotel before boarding his sailing ship, The Endurance, as it sailed out through the Sound. The expedition had planned to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic continent. Sadly this didn’t happen, instead it became recognised as an epic feat of endurance when Sir Ernest rescued all of his men, 27 of them, bringing them back home without a single loss of life.

Inspired by last year’s celebrations, which coincided with the hotel’s own 150 year anniversary, Duke of Cornwall directors Jon Morcom and Walter Combstock decided to pay tribute to the explorer by dedicating a room to him.

oversees the hotel’s bricks and mortar had chosen a room in the round ‘tower’ on the south-west side of the building to convert into the Shackleton Room. Being split into a rest area and a bedroom with en-suite facilities the room is more of a small suite.

Above the dining room and below the distinctive tower, the Shackleton room has views south west, towards Millbay Docks itself. Meeting in the Hayward Room, members of the Devon and Cornwall Polar Society were treated to a drinks reception by the hotel.

Papered throughout with a beige and silver paper and rich red carpet there are several tributes to its namesake.

After a welcome by director Jon Morcom and Paul Davis, the Society’s chairman reflected on why they were enjoying their lunchtime together. Paul was followed by Donald Kerr, who is the grandson of the Endurance’s second engineer. He read an extract from his grandfather’s diary entries. After a toast to Shackleton there was an opportunity to visit the room itself in small groups. Walter Comstock, the director who

The rest area has large photographs of Shackleton adorning the walls whilst the bedroom has a generous supply of books on the hero for guests to read. The hotel operates a rolling programme of upgrading rooms on a regular basis, each of which is given its own distinctive personality. It is expected that many of the Shackleton Room’s guests will be corporate visitors although already some feed-back suggests that it may very well be booked because of its Shackleton appeal.

Supersize rats on the rise! Rats in the UK are getting bigger due to the increasing volumes of food waste that are readily available to them. Rats are commonly found in residential gardens because they can easily find food and water and safe places to live. You may be unaware that rats are sharing your garden with you. Rats and mice can be found everywhere. They have well developed senses and the ability to adapt to almost every environment – as such they are one of the most invasive species in the world. They live in any

Advice and guidance from Plymouth City Council’s Pest Control Service

situation that provides food, water and shelter. Rats could be living in your compost heap or under your shed or decking areas. They can eat the food that you put out for the garden birds or the animals you keep as pets, e.g. rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, etc. Even if you put bird food on a bird table, rats are good climbers and have no problem accessing them. They also scavenge on food waste from rubbish and can get into your bins if they are not closed properly or have holes. Rats breed rapidly, they become sexually mature at three months and each female may produce up to 12 litters of between six and eight young in a year. Rats and mice carry many nasty diseases such as salmonella, listeria and Weil’s disease. These can be spread to humans by constantly urinating. They can move easily between homes and gardens because they can squeeze through holes as small as pencils and are good climbers. Their teeth grow throughout their lives and so the rodents are constantly gnawing. This can cause structural damage to properties and risks of fire and floods from gnawing through pipes and cables. Therefore, rats become a public health problem when they are found in your homes and gardens. Property owners have a legal responsibility to keep their homes and gardens free from rodents. Plymouth City Council can help you with this. We can locate the source of the problem and treat it using methods that ensure the safety of the public and minimise damage to the environment. We can treat for rats in private homes and gardens, social and private housing properties and commercial businesses. Finding rats and mice in your home can also be very stressful. We can offer a comprehensive but sensitive service. The council’s Pest Control Officers are fully qualified and the service has accreditation from the Trading Standards Buy with Confidence Scheme. The treatment of rats and mice in a private house is only £48.50. You can also obtain a quote for commercial properties, blocks of flats and houses in multiple occupation. Pest Control can be contacted on 01752 304147 or e-mail pestcontrol@plymouth.gov.uk. Further advice can be found on our website www.plymouth.gov.uk/rodents

Chamber of Commerce seeks new chief executive Plymouth & Devon Chamber of Commerce is seeking a new chief executive to lead and develop its growing responsibility for representing over 800 businesses in the region. It follows the announcement that current chief executive, Peter Hartland, will step down on September 18. Peter, the Chamber’s popular and successful chief executive, has during his 14 month tenure achieved a great number of notable outcomes for the Chamber, including the recent expansion of the Chamber’s accreditation to cover Devon, positive progress for an improved railway as part of the Chambers campaign for improved connectivity and as a champion for business across the region, through the efforts of Peter and his team; the Chamber has seen growth in its membership as more and more businesses take advantage of the benefits the Chamber can give them to improve their competitive edge. Peter Hartland said: “It is with great regret that I announce my departure from the Chamber. Having taken up the position last year I have formed many positive relationships with our member companies and strategic partner organisations across the city; working together we have taken steps towards securing a positive stepped change for our economy. Due to ill health within my family, I have taken the difficult decision

We love telling great stories about local people, businesses and our communities. But they would not reach you, our readers, without our great team of distributors delivering them to your door.

in, month out in all weathers. These enthusiastically motivated individuals and families do the best possible job for you, our paying clients and us. They deserve our gratitude.

We are so blessed to work with over 90 mature and wonderful distributors and back checkers who deliver your Plymouth Magazine, local Plymouth Shopper, Torpoint Advertiser and leaflets month

As well as ensuring that leaflet drops are delivered properly, our Distribution Coordinator Tim & his colleagues, Simon & Adrian have built strong relationships with each one of our team. We love to

One distributor found a set of keys left in a front door. He dutifully tried to knock and let them know, but no response. Because he knows the stree ts well, walking them for years, he had a sense all was not well. He called the police, and it turned out after several days that the householders had gone abroad on holiday in a bit of a hurry, leaving the house and car keys in the door. Needless to say, they were very relieved and grateful to receive their keys back from the police! A Backchecker, who may well knock on your door to verify our Plymouth Magazine or Shopper delivery, is a retired insurance man - well used to doorstep etiquette. He enjoys walking, meeting new people & earns while he burns (calories!).

Everyone has different motivation to take on a round, one lady has used the income to pay for her teenage sons mobile premiums, rugby kit & downhill mountain bike. As this includes exercise, it has been a better family solution than the usual withdrawals from the Bank of Mum and Dad.

see our distributors develop while they’re with us - many go on to find salaried employment after a few months, others stay for the long haul (some well over 10 years). We encourage our distributors and back checkers to develop a sense of community responsibility for the neighbourhood streets they walk as part of their round. So here are just a few of the stories we hear on a regular basis from our distributors:

A mum who worked in a school, delivered every month for 10+ years, at the same time took a part time University degree and recently achieved a promotion at her school! We are proud & celebrate like it is a member of our own family! A young man, in his early 20’s, was liv ing a nocturnal ‘comput er games’ lifestyle – rising at 2pm onwards, not really attempting to find work. He took on several rounds, after prom pting from his Grandfather, ca me off allowances, and began to earn and got fi tter. His ‘shoulders went back’, his self-esteem rose & he is now full tim e employed.

A retiree who was looking for some top up income to his pension has been delivering leaflets for a few hours a day. He’s lost weight, his knees (once a cause for concern) are significantly better, and he has remarked how he feels useful and valued again.

Stoke Damerel College students celebrate record A Level results Students at Stoke Damerel Community College have been celebrating a record set of A-level results. Staff and students gathered at the college on August 13 to open their brown envelopes and vice principal Martyn Cox said he was ‘extremely proud’ of the students’ achievements. “We’re celebrating record A-level results today and I’m particularly pleased with the A*grades our students received in maths,” said Mr Cox. “What is also very rewarding is that all of our Year 13 students who want to study at university are going.” Students are taking up places at universities across the country including King’s College, Sheffield, Exeter, Plymouth and Brunel.

“All the staff here have been so supportive so I’m really pleased I’ve got such good results,” said Mariah. “It’s made all the hard work worth it.” As well as improved A Level results, BTEC results are also up on previous years. “Our students are going to be studying subjects from Midwifery to Engineering and everything in between,” said Mr Cox. “There are lots of staff here this morning to be part of this important day with students they have known for many years and to celebrate with them,” he added. “It’s a highlight of our year and it’s lovely to see staff, students and their families came to the College today to share in everyone’s success.”

Ali Jan is off to Sheffield to study maths having gained A* in both maths and further maths. “It’s just sinking in, “ said Ali – who plans a career in the banking sector after completing his four-year Masters course which he begins in September. “I’m really excited and pleased, I can’t wait to get started.” Irina Ichim is also going to Sheffield to join the same course as Ali – also with an A* in maths under her belt. “I’m so pleased with my results,” said Irina, who also gained A Levels in further maths and chemistry.

“I have really enjoyed my time at Stoke Damerel and am looking forward to this next stage of my life.” George Wilton said he was ‘over the moon’ with his results which mean he can take up his place at King’s College, London to study history. “It’s a big relief to know I’ve secured my place on the course,” said George. “I’ll start in September 2016 after spending a year here at the College as a teaching assistant in the Science and English departments.” Fellow sixth form student Mariah Tobin will be studying 3D Design at Plymouth University and has also been awarded a Unite Foundation Scholarship.

Superb total of £5000 raised for Crohn’s charity Walkers, riders and cakemakers have raised well over £5,000 for the Crohns & Colitis UK charity. Friends and family of Stoke’s Jennie Morgan rallied round to organise a 20 mile walk, 100 mile cycle ride and a cake sale - with an original target of £1,000. Jennie said: “I am really proud of what we have achieved - raising more than five times our initial target.” Their efforts were in support of Mike Clarke, 25, who was first diagnosed with severe Crohn’s disease in late 2009. He had been studying music at St Austell College and played bass in a local band making appearances at the White Rabbit and other venues in the South West from Exeter to Camborne. Jennie said: “He also enjoyed riding BMX, but unfortunately despite many treatments the disease became progressively worse and he had to quit the band and riding as he was too ill to continue. “Mike has spent the past three years being admitted to hospital many times culminating in an ileostomy in October 2013.

“Although initially this seemed to relieve some of the symptoms it wasn’t long before the disease took hold again and eventually after being admitted to hospital in March it was found that an abscess had resulted in a perforated bowel and urgent surgery was required to remove his entire colon. I am pleased to say he is on the road to start leading a normal life.” The fund raising initiative started when Jennie and her husband Dave - both keen cyclists - decided that they wanted to ride from the north coast of Devon to the south coast. “We heard about Mike and felt that we could turn our 100 mile ride into a fund-raiser for the Crohn’s charity,” said Jennie. Zoe Oliver, a friend of Jennie’s decided to organise a 20 mile walk from Liskeard to the Jamaica Inn and back and then Theresa Saunders put on a cake sale to help the cause. The 20 walkers raised nearly £1500, the 10 riders raised nearly £3700 and Theresa’s cake sale added almost £550. Jennie added: “I would just like to place on record my sincere thanks for everyone who took part and all the individuals and organisations who supported us in so many ways.”
