New Year’s Day dip success By Rob Gibson

Lion President Stephen Murray, on behalf of the Lion’s Club of Torpoint and Rame Peninsula would like to thank everyone who took part in the Sponsored DIP for charity which was a really enjoyable and sobering experience to welcome the New Year. The weather was pretty reasonable for the event, dry and mild, but the water felt freezingly cold in Cawsand Bay. Some 107 people in fancy dress took part in the dip and were able to raise funds for charities of their own choice as MP Sheryll Murray (centre) with her Penguin group well as helping the Lions club Charity fund. The event was observed by over a thousand spectators and it was great to see so many people enjoying themselves and generously giving donations to our bucket wielding Lions and helpers. Dippers and spectators alike were grateful of a warming burger, hot dog, hot drink or a glass of mulled wine which was purveyed by the local Gig Club. Thanks goes to the Gig volunteers for satisfying everyone’s hunger and for their kind support of our lions club and especially catering for the event itself. Local MP, Mrs Sheryll Murray, not only helped to judge the other entrants, The parade heads towards the sea...and (right) but donned a penguin outfit Lions President ‘Superman’ Stephen Murray to join the president in the procession to Cawsand. could benefit from Lion’s involvement or a Lion’s charity funded appeal, please contact any lion or leave an email message. This will be addressed and answered promptly. Our Lions Club has, and continues to provide, medical equipment and defibrillators for hospital, surgery and local ‎community use. We predict the requirement of Shelter Box and always have one purchased in advance, for instant use. International disasters and famine are some of the areas of relief we are particularly organised. Club donations are amalgamated at regional level and are allocated directly to a Lions Club nearest to the disaster zone. Alternatively donations are collected from lions clubs worldwide and used wisely to meet ongoing needs. Lions financed medical coverage and hospital facilities on Haiti some years ago. Lions remain active in financing relief work in the area, even to this day. Torpoint Lions Club is closely connected with helping to supply fresh water to polluted and drought regions of the world. We regularly provide assistance to a school in Malawi, subsidise travel for Chernobyl Children to visit the south west for respite. Children’s Hospice Southwest, The Merlin Centre and Derriford cancer and children’s Units are but a few services that we have supported recently. Some people we speak to say that the voluntary work we do is good. When I see someone volunteering a donation, I think, ‘That’s good. Our work has just been made easier’. Long may we work together! If you wish to know more about the work Lions do, or wish to make contact for any related matter, please contact one of the officers whose details are below. A former Royal Navy Rear Admiral who lives on the Rame Peninsula, has been appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall. Mike Wood, who served 35 years as an Engineer Officer with the Royal Navy, has been selected to take on the role by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall - Her Majesty’s personal representative in the county. The appointment has been approved by The Queen Deputy Lieutenants assist Lord Lieutenants in carrying out their public duties and upholding the dignity of the Crown through functions such as arranging visits by members of the Royal family and escorting Royal visitors, presenting medals and awards on behalf of Her Majesty, and participating in civic, voluntary and social activities. Following the announcement Mike said, “I am honoured to have been asked to be a Deputy Lieutenant and am looking forward to making a wider contibution to life in Cornwall. Cornwall is my home and a fantastic county with a unique and rich heritage, culture , landscape and part to play in the economy of the Country. I am particularly looking forward to working with a wide range of people and organisations which have the best interests of the county at their heart”.

One of Mike’s early responsibilities will be to work with Mike Pearn , the Mayor of Torpoint, and the Town Council in the planning of the forthcoming Armed Forces Day for which Torpoint is representing Cornwall as a whole. During his naval career Mike served in a number of locations which included local postings at HMS Raleigh in 1976 and HMS Defiance in Devonport Naval Base during the mid 1990s, as well as onboard a number of Devonport base warships. With his wife Judy and their family, he has spent a total of about 20 years living on the peninsula. After retiring from the Royal Navy in 2003 as the Chief Naval Engineer Officer and Director General Logistic Operations at the Ministry of Defence, Mike went on to spend eight years working in the defence industry. Involved with a number of local charities and organisations, Mike has recently been appointed President of the local RNLI Rame Peninsula Branch after many years of voluntary support work for the charity. He is also Chairman of the China Fleet Club in Saltash, which provides leisure and recreational facilities to service personnel, and serves as a magistrate on the South & West Devon Bench.

Xmas lights: correction In the Tyhee Times column in January there was a reference to sources of funding of the Christmas Lights from both local businesses in Fore Street, the Chamber of Commerce and the Torpoint and District Lions. With the exception of the Lions who did sponsor the rigging of new electrical cabling some five years ago, neither the local Chamber of Commerce nor local businesses contribute to the lights. Sponsorship for the 2014 lights was mainly via a table top sale organised and run by Slimming World who contributed over £500 to the running of the event. John Tivnan

Popular Tamar Blues Collective are keeping the grooves alive whether it’s to tap your feet, sing along or even brush off that long forgotten instrument and join in. “I chose blues because it’s what I love. We do what we do for the love of it and to keep blues alive in the local area. I knew from the first practice that it was going to be something. It was just magic,” said John. Celebrating the music that spawned rock and roll, the Tamar Blues Collective play blues inspired by jazz musicians such as Chris Barber and John Mayall, of John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers fame. Despite their bedroom project beginnings, the orchestra has grown to feature top level musicians and vocalists, with a real passion and love for blues and grooves. The band celebrated Christmas 2014 in style by hosting a TBC Christmas party at the Saltash Social Club. Splitting the group into two, the ‘Silly Old Sods’ and ’Misspent Youth’ gave players with little or no gig experience the chance to play in front of a live audience.

TBC founder John Powles With big plans for 2015, the collective hope to play festivals and band stands, and are available to hire for shows and events and are also keen to work with charities in the future. For more information, contact John on 07905 751014, or 01752 957297. The group get together every Monday evening at the Saltash Social Club between 7pm and 10pm.

The Great HMS Raleigh ‘bake off’ Expert judges were on hand to judge the first ‘Great HMS Raleigh Bake Off’ held at the training base in Torpoint to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Three chef instructors from the Defence Maritime Logistics School (DMLS) and Mrs Val Pearn, the Mayoress of Torpoint, were invited to pick the winners of the competition, which was organised by ESS, the company that provides the catering and other services at HMS Raleigh. Service and civilian staff at the base donned their aprons to take part in the event, cooking up a range of cakes, biscuits and tarts for entry into 10 different categories from tray bakes to a gluten free product. After completing the difficult job of tasting the entries the judges awarded prizes for each category and named Lisa Jones, the ESS General Manager, as the overall winner. Starting off as one man’s need to revive his passion for music has grown into a thirty strong blues collective, featuring guitars, harps, keyboards, drums and more, writes Naomi Girdler. Stoke based John Powles began the collective in September last year when reigniting his love for blues following an accident left him unable to continue with his current band. After teaming up with a local bedroom guitar player, the idea struck him that there must be more musicians like themselves out there. John told me: “It provides people the opportunity to get involved with blues music, welcoming beginners or experienced players, and all standards in between.” The Tamar Blues Collective, also known as TBC, features more than 30 artists of all ages from a 16 year old guitar player through to self confessed septuagenarians, who get together every Monday evening at the Saltash Social Club. Gilbert & Sullivan Fellowship concerts raise £2000 for the Institute repair fund Two concerts were staged by the Plymouth Gilbert and Sullivan Fellowship in the Community Hall on Saturday January 24 to raise funds for the ongoing repairs and refurbishment of the Maker with Rame Institute. The matinee and evening concerts were the inspiration of Brian Williams, who is a passionate supporter of the Fellowship, and consisted of ‘Songs from the Shows’. They were delivered by a cast of 30 talented singers who are drawn from places as far apart as Newton Abbot and Saint Austell. The programme included excerpts from Blood Brothers, West Side Story, Oliver, Les Miserables as well as works by Rogers and Hammerstein, Lionel Bart and Andrew Lloyd Webber etc. The events were compared by Tony Hutchings with his customary polished delivery. Both performances were very well attended, the evening being a complete sell-out with the audience coming from all over South East Cornwall and Plymouth. The final amount raised is in excess of £2000 which is a remarkable effort and the trustees are extremely grateful to both the performers and those who attended. Refreshments for the cast were provided Sharan and Martin Bettridge. Thanks are also due to Jane Scott whose organisation enabled the smooth running of this highly successful day.

Celebration as new community hall kitchen is opened by Pam The official opening of the Maker With Rame Community Hall kitchen took place in January. Mrs Pamela Michael, who first became associated with the kitchen 18 years ago, opened the newly extended and refitted kitchen. It is now the third kitchen at the community hall that she has worked in. It first started when a villager left £2,000 to put a toilet in St Andrew’s Church in Cawsand, but this wasn’t enough money so Pamela’s husband Stephen asked her to go on a rota to help cook a meal once a month to raise the rest of the £4000 funds needed. The original oven was a domestic model with four rings and no fan assist, so the meat was cooked in Pamela’s kitchen above their village shop, while Joyce Feather did the roast potatoes in her kitchen. This was the birth of the monthly ‘Village Lunch’. Pamela was under the impression that this was going to be a short term arrangement and that she wouldn’t be cooking each month. After the money for the church toilet had been raised, Stephen decided that the fold-up chairs in the Kingsand Hall needed replacing. The Hall had been given 18 banqueting chairs, and it was agreed to use the lunches to continue raising money to add to these comfortable chairs, so far, together with their band of helpers, 100 new banqueting chairs have been purchased. About eight years ago, the kitchen had a refit, and a commercial cooker purchased to enable the meat to be cooked in the hall, but Joyce still wanted to do the roast potatoes, and did so until it became too much for her. Three years ago Pam and Stephen helped at a charity lunch at a hall in St Austell, and at that hall, was a three-minute dishwasher, so Pam suggested that if they organised a couple of three-course meal evenings a year, that would soon raise enough to put a dishwasher in the hall. They did this, and raised money with about 80 people having a good time, with a dance to round off the evening. Of course, small ideas easily become large ideas, and it was decided about a year ago to apply for planning to double the size of the kitchen and to do a complete refit, to what is now an outstanding kitchen.

Local supporters gathered in the Hall to celebrate the opening Stephen Michael, chairman of the management hall committee said that the new kitchen would not have been possible without the funders: SITA Cornwall Trust Ltd £30,000; Co-operative Community Fund £1,000; Pirate FM Trust, towards a dishwasher £250; Torpoint & Rame Lions Club purchased a Bain Marie £1,022; The Jaguars Boy Band 40 years On £510; Pam and Michael dinner dances £6,000. The talk now is of improving the hall’s toilets full circle for Pam?

Cawsand Sailing Club is donating £450 to the Cornwall Air Ambulance. At the club’s January committee meeting it was decided to donate £450, slightly more than the proceeds of the club’s carol singing evening just before Christmas Eve. The singers and collectors weaved their way through Kingsand and Cawsand, including the hostelries along the way, and are pictured as their tour ended in Cawsand Square, by complete chance of course, outside the Cross Keys, where some light refreshments

were kindly provided by Geoff and Isobel Green.

SILVER BAND CHARITY CONCERT The Torpoint Silver Band would like to thank the generosity of Torpoint during the Christmas period when they collected for Shelterbox and were able to send a donation of £150. The band, although small in membership, was able to play at both Lions Club fetes, Armistice Day, the opening of the Christmas lights as well as street playing in the month of December around certain areas of Torpoint. To survive, the band needs to swell its membership and would welcome anybody interested in joining. Practice is on Monday nights at 7pm at the band hut in Sainsburys car park, or just come along for a listen. The band’s first engagement for 2015 will start with a concert in the Council Hall together with the Ferryboat Entertainers and guest artistes on March 14, proceeds from which will be for Children’s Hospice South West.

Get involved with Armed Forces Day

The organising committee of the Cornwall Armed Forces Day at Torpoint is calling for organisations, businesses and veterans from across the county to get in touch if they would like to take part. This year’s county salute to past, present and future members of the Armed Forces will take place at Thanckes Park (The Lawn), Torpoint, on Saturday June 20. A full day of activity is being arranged by a committee set-up by Torpoint Town Council, which will include a veterans’ parade at 11am and entertainment during the afternoon and evening. Mayor of Torpoint, Councillor Mike Pearn MBE, said: “We are delighted that Torpoint has been chosen to host Cornwall’s Armed Forces Day. With the close proximity of HMS Raleigh, Devonport Naval Base and Tregantle Fort we very much consider ourselves a forces town. “Generations of Cornish men and women have signed up for the Armed Forces and it is them together with their counterparts who have made their home in the County that we want to honour.” Military units have been invited to take part on the day, as well as members of the Cadet Forces. A range of other organisations that are available to assist service personnel, veterans and their families and businesses have also been approached. The day will culminate with an evening of entertainment featuring

Wren Music at Porte Rouge

performances by local bands and singers and a fireworks display. Veterans who wish to take part should contact: Terry Moore, The President of The Royal British Legion (Torpoint Branch) on 01752 813164 – email: terrymoore44@btinternet.com. Business and other organisations should register their interest to the secretary Kim Brownhill email: abrown7357@aol.com. Armed Forces Day is an annual event. Its aim is firstly to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. Secondly, it gives people from across the nation an opportunity to ‘Show Your Support’ for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving troops to Service families and from veterans to cadets. The National Event this year will be held in Guildford on Saturday June 27. The event in Torpoint is one of a number which will be held up and down the country in support of Armed Forces Day. Further information on Cornwall’s Armed Forces Day is available online from: www.cornwallarmedforcesday.co.uk www.visitcornwall.com/whats-on/south-cornwall /torpoint/cornwall-armed-forces-day www.armedforcesday.org.uk/events/hold_an_event.aspx

The residents at Porte Rouge continue to enjoy and take part in activities. In December the residents were invited to a Christmas party at Oakwood Court College where a fantastic array of food was prepared. The residents were also entertained by Wren Music who provided an afternoon of interactive music. The residents loved joining in and playing some of the musical instruments provided by Wren Music. Cheaper energy for one and all

Householders across Cornwall are being encouraged to join forces to cut their energy bills through a new initiative called Community Energy Switch. The collective switching service has been launched by the Cornwall-based charity Community Energy Plus, which provides services to help householders reduce their energy use and ensure that they can afford to heat their homes. The charity is working with the national switching organisation energyhelpline to coordinate their collective switch and link into the group buying power of several other collectives taking place across the country at the same time. Householders have until March 1 to register, after which UK energy suppliers will compete to offer the cheapest exclusive tariffs. Community Energy Plus is confident that with average savings of £221 a year, based on energyhelpline’s last collective switch, bill payers will snap up the opportunity to switch to a better deal. Registration is free, quick and simple with no obligation to switch. Register online at www.community energyswitch.org.uk or call Freephone 0800 804 7247. For many people living in Cornwall, household incomes have failed to keep up with rising energy and living costs. Community Energy Plus has seen a steady increase in the number of people contacting them because they are struggling to keep warm and pay their energy bills. The initiative is being endorsed and promoted by Cornwall Council, NHS Kernow and the Winter Wellbeing Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Community Energy Switch is open to everyone – whether they live in or outside Cornwall. This includes people who own their own homes, rent from a private landlord or social housing provider, as well as if they pay their energy bills by direct debit, cheque, cash or pre-payment meter. Householders who register their details will be contacted with details of the winning energy deal from 2 March. As well as being offered the exclusive winning tariff they will also see all other tariffs in the market, so if another tariff suits an individual’s energy needs more, they can sign up for that instead; there will also be green tariffs on offer.

FROM THE MAYOR’S PARLOUR

Armed Forces Day is an annual event around Cornwall and this year it is in Torpoint. The event will be held at Thanckes Park (The Lawn) on Saturday June 20. The aim is firstly to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. Secondly, it gives people from across the nation an opportunity to ‘Show Your Support’ for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving troops to Service families and from veterans to cadets. Plans are going well. We have a good working committee and are delighted to have Rear Admiral Mike Wood, who has joined us to make Armed Forces Day a special day for Torpoint and Cornwall. I would like to congratulate Mike on his appointment as Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall. We are asking for organisations, businesses and veterans from across the county to get in touch if they would like to take part in this year’s salute to past, present and future members of the Armed Forces A full day of activities is being arranged, which will include a veterans’ parade at 11am and entertainment during the afternoon with marching bands and various arena entertainments plus static displays. The day will culminate with an evening of entertainment featuring performances by local bands and singers and a firework display. Military units have been invited to take part on the day, as well as members of the Cadet Forces. A range of other organisations that are available to assist service personnel, veterans and their families and businesses have also been approached. If you would like to help in anyway please contact us. Veterans who wish to take part should contact Colin Prideaux Royal British Legion (Torpoint Branch) on 01752 813182 email: Colin Prideaux c.prideaux182@btinternet.com. Businesses and other organisations should register their interest by contacting Kim Brownhill email: abrown7357@aol.com. Further information on Cornwall’s Armed Forces Day is available online from: www.cornwallarmedforcesday.co.uk www.visitcornwall.com/whats-on/ south-cornwall/torpoint/cornwall-armed-forces-day www.armedforcesday.org.uk/events/ hold_an_event.aspx

Dog Fouling I was hoping this year I would not have to put in my column about dog fouling, but sadly I have to as there are so many irresponsible dog owners around Torpoint spoiling it for the majority of respectful owners that clean up after their dogs. A campaign has been launched to encourage dog owners to be responsible. The message is simple: clean up after your dog and think about the impact your lack of action and lack of consideration has on the wider community. Remember, you are required to clean up after your dog has fouled and properly dispose of it when your dog fouls in any area which the public are entitled to have access to, including all sports fields and the community college grounds and the playing fields at the rear of the Community Sports Centre. Cornwall Council has introduced a Dog Fouling Order that covers all of Cornwall to ensure all areas of Cornwall have the same levels of enforcement for dog fouling. Failing to clean up after your dog has fouled will result in a fixed penalty being issued - which is for £80 or prosecution where if found guilty you would face a maximum fine of £1000. Whilst we only have a limited number of dog welfare and enforcement officers in Cornwall, there are a number of other officers who are able to issue fixed penalties (many of which are not uniformed officers) as well as most PCSOs - this means that there is a relatively high chance that you will be caught should you not clear up after your dog has fouled. It is not an excuse in law that you were not aware of the fact that the dog had fouled - so you can be held responsible even if you did not see the incident, or if it is witnessed whilst the dog is straying. Further details to report is on www.cornwall.gov.uk or telephone the Dog Welfare and Enforcement Team on 0300 1234 212.

Could you foster an older child or sibling group? In Cornwall there are over 270 families who foster and more are urgently needed. Cornwall currently has 440 children in care, with many of these older children and some in sibling groups. At present there is a specific need for foster carers

Torpoint to host Cornwall’s Armed Forces Day in June

to care for these children and young people. Many of them need permanent homes, living with foster carers who can offer them stability until adulthood. Foster carers help some of the most vulnerable children and young people by providing guidance, security and love. To find out more about becoming a foster carer, call the Fostering Team on 01872 323 638 or visit www.cornwall.gov.uk/fostering

Consultation on proposal to charge disabled car park users Cornwall Council has launched a consultation for a proposal to reintroduce charging in Cornwall Council car parks for disabled car park users who are exempt from road tax and display a Blue Badge. The consultation can be found at www.cornwall.gov.uk/parkingconsultations. Please respond to the survey. You can download a copy of the questionnaire off the website or pick up paper copies from One Stop shops and libraries. Any enquiries should be directed to the following email address: disabledparking@cornwall.gov. uk or to the following address: Disabled Parking Consultations, Parking Services, PO BOX 664, Truro, TR1 9DH. The consultation runs until April 17. Since 2010 car park users displaying both a Blue Badge and a nil tax/disabled tax disc have been entitled to free parking in Cornwall Council car parks. This facility was introduced because at the time not all car parks had payment machinery that was accessible to people with disabilities. Since then the council has committed to upgrading payment equipment and has introduced pay by phone (currently provided by RingGo). The equipment upgrade programme will be complete in mid-2015 - subject to funding being approved for the final phase of the upgrade. The council does not propose to introduce charges until this is complete. The council’s proposal is to charge the tax exempt Blue Badge holders who currently park for free, but to leave in place the additional free hour for all Blue Badge holders: Blue Badge holders paying a parking fee automatically get one extra hour of free parking. For example if someone correctly displays a Blue Badge and pays for two hours, they can park for three hours. Blue Badge holders are also able to park in areas where other restrictive on-street measures, such as double yellow lines and single yellow lines apply, provided that they do not cause an obstruction. There are a total of 35,000 Blue Badge holders in Cornwall, of whom 13,000 are currently entitled to free parking. It should be emphasised that the original facility was not introduced to give a financial advantage to one group of people over others but to remove the necessity for tax exempt Blue Badge holders to wrestle with inadequate machinery. We will have addressed this inadequacy and introduced a phone-based payment system by the time the proposal would be introduced.

Don’t let loan sharks mess with your head! Many people will struggle with finances at some point in their lives and for some people when times are tough they feel they have no option but to borrow from loan sharks. It is estimated that 310,000 households in the UK are borrowing from lenders who are unauthorised, often charge extortionate rates and may resort to violence, threats and intimidation to enforce their loans. One in four people may experience some kind of mental health issue in the course of a year and money worries can escalate problems. The stress of being involved with an illegal lender can have awful effects: 21% of borrowers interviewed by the Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) during the first six months of 2014 said that they had poor mental health, with several speaking about thoughts of suicide. The IMLT is the agency that prosecutes loan

Cllr. Mike Pearn MBE sharks and supports people affected by this crime. Often the person who introduces the loan shark is seen as a trusted friend or even family member. Comments from some of those who have been helped by the IMLT team include: “I wish I’d known there was somewhere to go years ago” “The team were fantastic, they offered so much support, and every promise they made they delivered” “It was such a relief when I found out the loan shark was arrested and then put in prison.” Illegal lenders will often appear very friendly in the first instance but should never be used under any circumstances. They rarely offer paperwork so borrowers are unsure about the terms of the agreement and how much is owing. The rates of interest can also be extortionate, as high as 131,000% has been identified in the past. Some loan sharks will also resort to taking items from the victim’s home as security, including items such as passports and bank cards. If you or someone you know has been the victim of a loan shark, then please speak to the Illegal Money Lending Team in the strictest confidence on 0300 555 2222. Lines are open 24/7 and are answered by a trained investigator. There are a lot of scams going about so please be careful!!! Check it out before you part with any money.

10th anniversary celebrations for Cawsand solicitor

Cawsand-based legal business, Richard Harris Solicitors, celebrated its 10th successful year at the beginning of January. This firm was set up in January 2005 by Richard Harris as a niche specialist personal injury firm and only act for accident victims against defendants and their insurers. Richard Harris’ early training was at a specialist trade union personal injury firm but then moved on to work for Plymouth city centre firms for many years and subsequently set up personal injury departments before making the decision to set up on his own. Although hidden away in the seaside village of Cawsand, the firm acts not only for local injury victims but attracts clients nationally and even internationally and has recovered millions of pounds in damages for victims of accidents and industrial disease. They have pursued claims from the most serious paraplegic to the more ‘run of the mill’ minor injuries with the same professionalism and expertise. The firm has also acted for clients who have suffered the most terrible medical conditions caused by industrial disease such as asbestosis and mesothelioma through to dermatitis/ skin problems caused by chemicals and carbon monoxide poisoning. The firm has acted for clients who have been injured in every conceivable type of place and mode of transport. The list includes dockyards, boatyards, factories, building sites, shops, nightclubs, hotels, prisons, pubs, pavements, on ladders, on

Richard Harris pictured with his secretary Francine ‘Franky’ Button scaffolding, in schools and pretty much every form of transport including serious car accidents, serious motorcycle accidents, train crashes, on buses, on aircraft, on cruise liners, on ferries, on horses, on horse and carriages, on bicycles. Even walking is not safe. Richard’s experience suggests that there are no end of ways that people can get injured and probably no more unusual than a case that the firm took on in its very first year. This firm successfully pursued a claim for a lady on her hen night who was injured at a concert by a football kicked into her by none other than Rod Stewart! Richard Harris Solicitors look forward to going from strength to strength in 2015 Richard Harris hopes that you don’t suffer an injury - but if you do please remember go to the local specialists in Cawsand. Richard Harris can be contacted on 01752 822224 or at his website www.richardharrissolicitors.co.uk

Congratulations from RNLI Rame Peninsula Branch on the 400th edition of the Torpoint Advertiser Congratulations to the Torpoint Advertiser on their 400th edition and a big ‘thank you’ from the RNLI Rame Peninsula Branch for helping us raise awareness of how the charity helps ‘save lives at sea’ in the local area. With the help of the Torpoint Advertiser over the last few years we have been able to bring you first-hand information about the team of RNLI Lifeguards, many of them from local families, who patrol four of our Whitsand Bay beaches helping to keep beach and sea-users safe. We have also been able to bring you news of volunteer crews at nearby Looe and Plymouth RNLI lifeboat stations, telling you about some of

their responses to local life-threatening incidents at sea. 400 editions of the Torpoint Advertiser is a great celebration – by my reckoning that amounts to well over 30 years of our free local newspaper. It also means that it’s been delivered to our doors more than 20 years before RNLI Lifeguards began patrolling our local beaches. Whilst I haven’t been able to come up with any ‘400’ data to match the Advertiser’s achievement - to join in with the spirit of celebration, here are a few snippets of information about our charity’s Lifeguards: The RNLI lifeguarding service started in 2001 following a successful pilot scheme. Today, over 1,000 RNLI lifeguards patrol over 200 beaches in the UK and Channel Islands during the Summer, with 365-day lifeguard patrols at Crosby in Merseyside and Boscombe in Dorset. There are over 50 beaches in Cornwall with a RNLI lifeguard service at some time during the year.

At a time when many local newspapers are struggling to survive, it is great to celebrate the success of the 400th edition of the Torpoint & District Advertiser. The popular newspaper was launched more than 33 years ago - and is still going strong! The story began in 1981 when the Torpoint Chamber of Commerce decided that they wanted to produce a publication to help promote businesses in Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula. Printer Alan Shannon was a member of the Chamber and it came as no surprise when he

was asked to print the first edition in August 1981. “Everyone felt that Torpoint and the rest of the Peninsula was out on a limb and not particularly well served by the mainstream newspapers,” said Alan.

Family business He had established his family business Tor Print five years earlier and he was delighted to take on responsibility for the Advertiser. “The first edition was 12 pages, printed in single colour on newsprint. We had to fold and

The Torpoint Advertiser has been published by Cornerstone Vision since March last year and has increased circulation to 6,500 copies each month, a third of which are delivered door-to-door by the Royal Mail, with the remainder delivered by Cornerstone’s own team of distributors. Deltor’s long-standing links with the Torpoint Advertiser are continuing as the company is responsible for printing the newspaper for Cornerstone Vision.

‘MORE THAN JUST A NEWSPAPER’ The front page headline on the first edition of the Torpoint and District Advertiser proclaimed: ‘More than just a newspaper.’ The editiorial accompanying the headline read: ‘Welcome to the Advertiser which is produced by local people to serve Torpoint, Millbrook, Kingsand, Cawsand, Crafthole, St John’s and Wilcove. In fact the whole of the Rame Peninsula. ‘We believe it is time that our area had a newspaper of its own which reflects our way of life and promotes the interests of local business people. ‘Scant coverage is paid to our affairs by the big media battalions in Plymouth. To them we are just a suburb of a great city. But we know that this area is unique and can never be regarded as part of Plymouth.

‘Issues are presented with an inevitable Plymouth bias. Take, for example, the lunatic scheme mooted by Plymouth Chamber of Commerce for a road bridge at Torpoint. The plan they put forward would carry a high level bridge over Torpoint which would put the town in permanent shadow. ‘And the plan is designed for one thing: to make it faster and easier to drive into the city to spend our money in Plymouth shops. ‘There are many other matters on which we hope to provide you with a forum for your ideas and views. ‘Initially the Advertiser will be produced monthly and we are distributing free into 5,000 homes. ‘We are confident that it will grow with your help and we ask you to support our advertisers who are helping to make it possible.’

10 Advertiser February 2015 By Rev Alison Richardson Minister at Cornerstone Church, Torpoint, Mount Gould and Millbrook Methodist Churches

Promoting love, peace, fairness and justice I write this the day after the barbaric murder of twelve people at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, Paris. Today a policewoman has been murdered by a gunman in Paris. All I can do is pray for the victim’s families, friends and colleagues, with deep sadness and compassion in my heart. People are frightened, with the threat of further copycat attacks, or that those already involved could try to strike again. France declared today as a day of national mourning and people in many parts of the world have held two minutes silence, out of respect and to stand in solidarity against terrorism. I expect you wonder, as I do, what the next days and weeks will bring, along with the rest of the world, which watches and waits. You must feel blessed to live in this area, don’t you? Do you know how safe this area is? Just this week I received the Torpoint Police Team Monthly Bulletin which makes interesting reading. (See On the Beat on this page). During December 146 calls were made to the control room from the Torpoint and Rame area, some were duplicate calls. 12 of the incidents were assaults, the others were of various causes, including burglaries and criminal damage. There were 23 incidents of anti-social behaviour, and police attended a number of domestic related incidents. In some incidents help was needed, and in some others vulnerable children and adults needed provision from specialised agencies. The media advises us that domestic abuse is on the increase and just yesterday the local news confirmed that one women’s refuge was actually full, and turning people away daily. You might wonder why I refer to all this in a ‘Churches Together’ article, and ask what does it have to do with Christianity? Quite simply it has everything to do with our faith. We are commanded by Jesus to love one another, his whole ministry was one of healing, preaching and teaching a way of life which benefits the whole of society. To the best of my knowledge every faith promotes love, peace, fairness, justice and harmony. I will quote the ancient Hebrew prophet Amos who wrote “But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream.” So at the start of this New Year let us reflect on our own behaviour and remember that our lives are the testimony of our faith. The views expressed in this column are not necessarily the views of Churches Together in Torpoint

Police domestic abuse campaign: ‘Shatters Lives’

The domestic abuse awareness campaign ‘Shatters Lives’ highlights the trauma children go through when living at home with domestic abuse. The campaign was rolled out during Domestic Abuse Awareness Week with the police in partnership with the Devon Domestic and Sexual Violence and Abuse Alliance. It continued in the lead up to Christmas and New Year when domestic abuse incidents are significantly higher. Although the campaign might have ended, the work to support families affected by domestic abuse continues every day. One in four women and one in six men experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives. An estimated 750,000 children in the UK witness domestic abuse in their home (Department of Health). Children affected may express violent or angry behaviour and be unable to manage feelings and emotions. Detective Superintendent Paul Northcott from the Public Protection Unit said: “Domestic abuse is a complex crime affecting all of our communities across Devon and Cornwall. These crimes have a profound and often tragic affect on the victims and also on their families including their children. Working with our partners we are committed to supporting victims and children. This is a Force priority. We always aim to protect the community’s most vulnerable people. If you know of anyone who needs help in this area, we would encourage you to come forward.” For information and advice call the Domestic Abuse 24 hour National Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 2000 247.Cornwall REACH hub number is 0300 7774 777. Call police 999 in an emergency or 101 in a non-emergency.

Facts and figures December 2014

Between 0001hrs 01/12/14 and 2359hrs 31/12/14, the Control Room recorded 146 calls from the public in Torpoint and across the Rame Peninsula. A small number of these were duplicate incidents. These calls included the 64 crimes recorded as being committed across Torpoint and Rame Peninsula. Incidents which occurred after midnight on New Year’s Eve will be included in the January figures next month. All told, New Year’s Eve was successfully enjoyed by everybody and the incidents reported to police were a number of criminal damages in Kingsand and Cawsand, a possible “drink-spiking” in Torpoint and a domestic situation in Millbrook. Crime types by parish area were:Torpoint – 40 - 8 assaults (all categories including sexual and domestic incidents), 2 burglaries (dwellings), 17 thefts (including 2 frauds, 11 thefts or attempt thefts from vehicles),1 vehicle interference, 5 criminal damages, 3 public-order type offences, 2 communications offences, 1 animal-related offence and 1 drugs offence. Deviock – 4 – 2 thefts, 1 assault and 1 witness intimidation. Sheviock – 3 (assaults) Antony & Wilcove – 2 - 1 theft and 1 criminal damage St John – 1 (criminal damage) Millbrook – 10 - 1 theft, 1 burglary (dwelling)and 8 assaults Maker with Rame – 4 – 1 public-order offences, 1 criminal damage, 1 animal-related offence and 1 communications offence. Police attended a number of domestic related incidents where no specific offences had occurred but help was provided at the scene and other incidents where vulnerable children and adults were identified as requiring help from other agencies. There were also 23 incidents of anti-social behaviour reported to us across Torpoint and Rame. The majority of those were neighbour disputes; some were complaints about Facebook disputes, others about noise and vehicles and one call was about large noisy groups on New Year’s Eve. Much work is in progress by police and Cornwall Council to address reports of anti-social behaviour in Downderry. You can report anti-social behaviour directly to the Anti-Social Behaviour team at Cornwall Council by completing the online report available at www.safercornwall.co.uk If you have any information about crime or anti-social behaviour in your area, please call the police on 101, email 101@ devonandcornwall.police.uk or in an emergency always call 999. Alternatively you can call the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

Getting to the heart of poetry

Torpoint Community College held its very first Poetry By Heart competition in January. Three students - Beth, Hannah and Alex, recited their selected poems from the published Poetry By Heart Anthology, in front of five esteemed judges Mrs Hazeldine, Miss Lockett, Mrs Wallis and Mr Pease. This prestigious line-up also welcomed a special guest judge to the college, David Woolley - a published poet - and who with fellow poet Ann Gray runs the Bodmin Moor Poetry Festival and other literary events across Cornwall. He also set up and runs Westwords Poetry -

publishing imprint in Cornwall for the past 25 years. It was a wonderful event which saw the Torpoint students recite by heart two poems - one pre-1914 and one post 1914 poem in spectacular style. They were a credit to the college and it was a pleasure to be a part of such a fantastic competition. The scoring was exceptionally close but the overall winner was Beth and the runner-up was Hannah. Beth was entered in the county stage of the competition, which took place at Truro Community Library on January 29, and Hannah will act as her understudy.

These students will now need to memorise an additional poem from the World War 1 section of the Anthology in time for the county contest. Rachel Bertram, English teacher and event organiser, said: “All staff and guests present couldn’t have been more proud of how our students rose to this challenge, entertaining and ‘wowing’ us with their confidence and commitment. “We all hope that this will be the start of many more years being part of this UK wide event and we wish Beth all the very best of luck in the upcoming county heat.”

Millbrook Pharmacy Update It’s incredible how the weeks of 2015 are starting to roll on by. In the last couple of weeks, there appears an increasing demand from many companies and organizations to move everything to email or you will find it online. This includes our pharmacy orders also our regular pharmacy magazines that keep us updated with the latest products and services. It’s great when you can find what you are looking for in an instant, online or with a click of a button, it’s done but often this is not the case. I still prefer to phone through many of my pharmacy orders to check prices and availability, its great listening to a real voice that provides instant answers. So I understand well, the increasing concerns and frustrations for many of you especially those who are housebound, frail, elderly, those with disabilities or limitations and trying to reorder or receive your medication. Here are some of your or your family’s concerns: - How can I order my repeat prescriptions online when I don’t have a computer? Since my fall, I can’t get to the Surgery to reorder my medicine, what can I do? I can’t be without it? The Surgery won’t take my repeat order over the phone and I don’t use a computer, how will I order my repeats? Please can your pharmacy help my 86 year old Mum, she is becoming forgetful. She has a heart condition. She must take her pills. I live up country and only get down a few times a year but I do call her every night. My Dad lives in Torpoint and he’s had a big operation. Can you deliver his medication and dressings? He’s not recovering as well as we expected. I have to go back to work and I can’t always get what has been ordered for him. At Millbrook Pharmacy, my team and I can help, our free medicine management service is ideal for those with increasing needs. Everyone has individual requirements so it is best to book a free appointment with me and together, we can work out the best support and assistance most suitable for you. This may require helping you with reordering your prescription repeats; to making up your medication into weekly trays if there are no restrictions; to delivering your medication at the agreed arranged time. Our Free Prescription Delivery Service is helpful and ideal for those who are housebound, elderly and those receiving bulky dressings living in Cremyll, Kingsand, Cawsand, Freathy, Crafthole, Antony, Wilcove and Torpoint. I can make home visits with one of my team for all housebound patients, to discuss and set up the free medicine management and/or delivery services. By meeting you, understanding your needs and providing guidance with your medication, this brings a lot of reassurance and ongoing support. Please feel free to give us a call 01752 822391 for further details. My staff do screen my calls as we receive many of those time wasting nuisance calls like many of you have to your homes. Also there are times when I’m in consultation or checking a weekly tray that I’m unable to come to the phone immediately. Please discuss your enquiry with the staff member who answered the phone. They will take down your details, offer help if possible or they will leave me a message to call you back. For those using the online repeat prescription ordering service, please allow 4 working days for your prescription to arrive into the pharmacy. Your Surgery still needs to print your prescription, to complete all their checks and for the Doctor to sign the prescription. This takes time especially if your medication is up for a review. A reminder to Cawsand patients calling in for your dispensed medication. You are told it will be ready at 1.00pm. This is the time we collect your signed prescriptions. Please allow another couple of hours for your

medication to be ready on the collection shelf. All emergency, antibiotic and delivery run medication is given priority. Thanks for your understanding with this. Did you make a New Year’s resolution? Mosquito’s dinghy section prize giving After the last race of the season and the 2014 laying up lunch which helped to create a jovial atmosphere, Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club dinghy section congregated in the clubhouse for its annual prize giving, to reminisce about the season, congratulate the trophy winners and thank all those volunteers who help run the races and man the safety boats. Against a slideshow of photos taken during the year’s racing, the adult prizes were presented by club commodore, Steve Creek and Jack Mann the sailing secretary, dinghies, was the master of ceremonies. This led to the interesting spectacle of the sailing secretary announcing that the first regular trophy – the J M Thomas trophy for the winter series 2013 – had been won by himself and his stalwart crew, Ron Goggin. Recalling that this was the series

when cadet Ruby Pearce-Casey raced solo for the first time and also when Rob Loader broke his mast, the spring series 2014 trophy was awarded to Ronnie Carter and Matt Reeves (RS400). The summer series trophies included the Jones Cup donated by the-then club secretary in the 1950s (won by Tony Ayers and granddaughter Ellen Fortt in the Laser 2000 for the Fast Handicap Summer Monday series 2) and the Harry Cann Memorial Cup won by Jack Mann and Ron Goggin (Wanderer) for the medium handicap Summer Thursday series 2. This trophy was also given to the club in the 1950s; Harry Cann also gave the club six dinghy kits and a crane. In a year when the cadet section has gone from strength to strength with some cadets regularly joining the adult racing - as well as competing in Bart’s Bash - and raising enough funds to buy two more training dinghies, it was a pleasure to see Josef Sellors and Grace Cowd recognised as top boy cadet of the year and top girl cadet of the year respectively. Noah Rees was awarded the Todd trophy for top cadet helm in the summer series. Special awards were made to Ronnie Carter and Andy Allen for their regular support and particularly to Jenny Roberts who was given the Pete Goss Endeavour trophy for all her help with running the section. Window Shopping Brown Owl Chris Roper retired after 24 years at 2nd Torpoint Brownies. The Brownies held a ‘Smartie’ party with her on her last night. Chris is pictured with her Brownies and a special ‘Smartie’ cake. After more than 24 years as Brown Owl at 2nd Torpoint Brownies, Chris Roper retired at the end of December. On her final night Brownies held a special ‘Smartie’ party with games and lots of fun! Brownies dressed in all colours of Brown Owl’s favourite sweets and there was even a celebration cake covered in Smarties! Chris stepped in during 1990 as the Brownie Pack was in danger of folding. Since then it has been 24 years of fun! At Brownies on a Tuesday evening activities were rarely repeated, with different crafts, badge work, games, songs and visitors such at Screech Owl Sanctuary coming with their owls. Over the years Brownies have experienced Pack Holidays in south east Cornwall, but once visiting London, even staying at Baden Powell House. They have held many sleepovers, once sleeping with the sharks at the National Marine Aquarium. They have

visited Legoland, the Plymouth lifeboat and even went to Birmingham to see Santa on a canal barge. They have held numerous fundraising events and collected stamps to help local charities. Chris has also led the Brownies in many community events and parades, singing in church, and residential homes. Her enthusiasm has made all the girls feel special and has given them opportunities they may not have otherwise had. On her last evening, the leaders and Brownies presented her with gifts. One for her to treasure was a ‘memory book’ compiled by the leaders with comments from former Brownies over the years. As well as Brown Owl, Chris had been the District Commissioner and County Music Advisor. Her love of singing will continue with Kernow Singing Circle, a group of Girl Guiding leaders who have performed throughout the county.

MAKER WITH RAME

December was Christmas party month A few business matters were aired and then the wine was circulated. Party pieces came to the fore. Poems, jokes and monologues were read, party food was produced and more wine. Then Janet James organised a musical hats game. Out of a sack she produced a huge variety of hats and we jammed them on each other’s heads amidst much laughter. It properly got us in the mood for Christmas. January. For a variety of reasons we elected not to have a speaker this month. Instead, after the usual business matters were dealt with, we had a long and difficult quiz. This was designed to show up the gaps in our general knowledge. At least now we know what a funambulist walks on and the year Desert Island Discs began. Then, during the tea break with ginger fruit cake, we battled with 20 anagrams of English cathedrals. In both quizzes there were 1st, 2nd and booby prizes. Maggie Hemming gave us an impromtu talk on her seven years working in London as an AA pilot. In the years prior to motorways she would meet a car owner at a train station and drive him in his car (usually something in the Rolls or Bentley bracket) across London to the outskirts when the owner would take over. Maggie would then make her own way back to base. We all agreed she should have a bravery award! It was a lighthearted afternoon and we look forward to next month’s annual lunch at the Copley Arms. The next meeting will be on Friday February 20 at 2.30pm when the speaker will be a retired AA patrolman. Perhaps Maggie will be able to tell him a thing or two!

WILCOVE

History, heritage & celebrations

The first meeting of 2015 was a busy one for the ladies of Wilcove WI as we took the opportunity to; catch-up after Christmas and New Year, ‘meet and greet’ new members, listen to our speaker and work through a very full first agenda. 2015 is truly going to be a memorable WI Centenary year with many great events and activities for our members to participate in. Our first speaker for 2015 Cliff Cooper certainly captured interest as he outlined how Torpoint was developed in the 1780’s to house a burgeoning dockyard workforce living on ‘Hogs’ (ships) anchored on the River Tamar. Recognising the need to release land for housing on a waterside section of the Anthony Estate nobleman and landowner; Reginald Carew Pole sold off a field called “Tar Point” and here the first town houses were built. To discover more about the fascinating history of Torpoint a book entitled ‘The making of Cornish Town..Torpoint & Neighbourhood through two hundred years’ is recommended by Cliff. The book and details about the work and activities of the Torpoint archive team can be accessed via: Torpoint Council Chambers www.torpointtowncouncil.gov.uk For the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) 2015 heralds a Centenary year with the NFWI webpage focusing on it’s proud

history and birthday celebrations (see the website at www.thewi.org.uk/centenary) and campaign resolutions for 2015 (www.thewi.org.uk/campaigns/ resolutions-and-mandates). These activities were also reflected at a regional level with many of the Cornish WIs putting the final touches to their own Centenary celebrations. On Monday February 23 the WI Centenary Baton will arrive in South East Cornwall to be transported In-style by vintage car to the local WIs stopping briefly at each for a photo-opportunity. The Wilcove WI ladies will greet the baton at a member’s historic cottage located in central Wilcove. In the evening the ladies of the Torpoint WI will host a function at St James Church, Torpoint complete with Cornish fayre and entertainment from local singers; The Ferryboaters. On Tuesday February 24 the ladies of Trematon WI will host a coffee morning, cake cutting ceremony and lunch along with arranging for the baton to be transported by vintage bus from Cornwall across the Tamar Bridge and into Devon. Once on the Devon side of the border the baton will be received by members of the Devon WI’s in the presence of notable dignitaries and a Royal Navy guard of honour. It will be a great privilege to receive the baton in South East Cornwall during its journey throughout the United Kingdom and heartfelt thanks are extended to all those individuals and organisations that ensured that the local baton celebrations were such a success. In February Wilcove WI members elected a new committee several key members having stepped-down at the end of their term in office. The Wilcove WI ladies would like to publically thank Sue Walters (President), Linda Selton (Secretary), Lynn Vickery (Treasurer) and Leisha Champion (Programme editor) for the personal time they have dedicated to their duties and hope that they will continue to enjoy our future events and activities without the responsibilities of office. On March 24 Wilcove WI ladies will take time out to relax and celebrate their 65th birthday at an evening function at Wilcove Village Hall and an invitation for the event is being extended to past and present members. Our speaker for April will be Barbara Smith (SSAFA Ambassador) who will talk about the HM Forces charity SSAFA www.ssafa.org.uk/. We look forward to the year ahead and invite interested or new members to join us at our monthly meetings and periodic events. Wilcove WI meets at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Wilcove Village Hall.

PENSIONERS’ VOICE Maker with Rame Meeting December 2014 For the big retail stores, Christmas began in August, but for the sensible Pensioners of Maker with Rame, it began on the evening of November 29 when the village children with the lighted lanterns they had made, processed through the villages from Cawsand Square to Kingsand Community Hall Garden. There they gathered round the Christmas Tree, the fairy lights and decorations throughout the villages were switched on, and carols were sung. Then into the Hall where the singing continued, backed by piano played by Miss Pauline Turpitt, attended by, it seemed, the entire population of the local community welcoming in Christmas with mulled wine and mince pies. The next event for the pensioners was their Christmas lunch, held this year in the Halfway Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed by the many members who attended on December 4. The following week was the monthly meeting, held in the Community Hall on December 11

Mrs Rosalee Pope provided the accompaniment for the pensioners to sing with gusto all the old carols and, whilst they were raising their voices, they raised their cups of tea and enjoyed the seasonal hot mince pies and clotted cream in the warm, welldecorated hall. Chairman Steve Michael, thanked Mrs. Pope and then the Committee for all they do in organizing, serving and washing-up for the teas served every month, especially these past few months when the hall has been without a kitchen. But we can now look forward to the new kitchen which was opened by Mrs Michael in early January 2015. Members were reminded that there is NO meeting in January, so the next one will be held in the Community Hall, Kingsand at 2.30pm on Thursday February 12, when anyone over the age of 50 would be most welcome. The chairman then wished everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, and the meeting closed at 4pm.
