chef’s ‘Oscar’

A sailor based at HMS Raleigh has been named the Armed Forces Chef of the Year at an awards ceremony described as the ‘Chef Oscars’. Leading Chef Laura Willison, who lives in Torpoint, was announced as the winner at the 2014 Craft Guild of Chef Awards ceremony at a special gala dinner attended by more than 650 guests. Laura is currently based at the Defence Maritime Logistics School at HMS Raleigh. This is her second posting to the school and to date she has passed on her extensive knowledge of cooking to around 100 new Royal Navy recruits to her specialisation. She is also the Captain of the Naval Service Culinary Arts Team (NSCAT). Earlier this year Laura was the awarded the prize of the Royal Navy Chef Instructor of the Year by the Worshipful Company of Cooks in London. For this latest award Laura was nominated by her boss at the DMLS, Warrant Officer 1 Chaz Talbot, alongside two others Chefs chosen by the Army and the RAF. Laura, aged 33, said: “If someone had told me 14 years ago that I would be receiving awards in my career then I wouldn’t have believed them. To get recognition for the job that I do a second time in a few months is really surprising.” Laura joined the Royal Navy in 2000 and has served on a variety of warships, including the Aircraft Carrier HMS Ark Royal when she cooked for His Royal Highness The Duke of York and Her Majesty The Queen Mother. As well as her instructional duties at HMS Raleigh, Laura is currently planning for this year’s Exercise Joint Caterer, the annual Armed Forces culinary competition, which will be held in October. She is also preparing for a training course of her own in readiness for promotion to Petty Officer. Laura’s Officer Commanding, Lieutenant Commander Cdr Gary Manning, said: “This is a real honour for Laura. She has excelled as an instructor within the DMLS and has also attained the Royal Navy Chef Instructor of the Year award, a credit in itself. “This latest award is fantastic news, not only for Laura who fully deserves the recognition, but for the wider chefs’ specialisation in the Royal Navy. I’m really very pleased for her. This award is the highest accolade that a military chef can receive, she should be very proud.”

All set for annual summer fair

KARDKADIA Specialist Party Decorators

June’s business meeting was a lively affair, with talk of how successful the boat trip was and how much it was enjoyed. The Zone Chairperson was impressed on how the Torpoint & Rame Peninsula Lions get involved with the community and how much is organised and the effort that goes into every event. A secret ballot was held for an award of the Lions, Lion of the Year, so check back next month to see who is held in the highest esteem by the Lions themselves. Then it was back to business, with the organising of the annual Lions Summer Fair on July 19. This year it is being held at the Torpoint Community College, starting at 11am with lots of fun and frolics for all ages. If you would like a stall at the event then call Lion Steve or Julie Morris on 01752 816 427 or 07802 786510. Don’t forget if you need a wheelchair, then contact Lion

As the eyes of much of the world turned to Brazil with the opening of the World Cup, the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer - towering over the city of Rio de Janeiro - has been the centre of much attention. Brazilians, and many others, have been angered by the use of the image in a number of rather tasteless advertising campaigns and advertising stunts. A rather more inspiring use of the famous statue took place on the eve of the opening match when the sculpture was used for a sound and light show. It was illuminated in turn in the colours of the flags of all the competing nations demonstrating, according to the Catholic Church in Rio, that Jesus Christ is universal and shelters everyone. Pope Francis, in a message to the World Cup organisers expressed the hope that in addition to being a celebration of sport, this World Cup can be transformed into a festival of solidarity between peoples. He also noted that the sporting spirit is one that teaches the need for discipline, effort and sacrifice to succeed and achieve excellence; virtues that help to build up character in other ways too. The bible often compares the spiritual life with sporting contests such as boxing and athletics. St Paul compared the Christian with an athlete striving for a prize, training so as to be able to give your best and exercising selfcontrol to avoid being disqualified. Here is a prayer based on St Paul’s words to the church in Corinth:O God who made me as I am, and who makes no mistakes, be with me as I learn to run the race of faith. O Christ who redeemed me to be your follower, be with me as I learn to run in your footsteps. O Holy Spirit who strengthens me when I grow faint, feed me with the living bread and bring me always to the living waters so that I may be refreshed and run and not grow weary. Amen.

A great day out for party from Torpoint school

Torpoint Nursery and Infant School have won the National 2014 House of Commons Speaker’s School Council Award in the 4 – 7 year old category. They were chosen as the winners because of the work that they undertook to obtain a ban of the PIB substance which had killed so many sea birds in the area. To celebrate this amazing award, six members of the School Council travelled to London on June 11 for a unique celebration event at the Houses of Parliament. As part of their incredibly exciting day the children had a tour of the Palace of Westminster and lunch in the Speaker’s apartment. The award was presented by the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt Hon John Bercow. Our incredible day at London! - The Children’s Account Our day began at 5.30 in the morning with a very funny feeling in our tummies because we were so excited! Before long we were heading to Paddington. For some of us, it was our first time on a train, we were very lucky to travel in style...First Class!

When we arrived at London we couldn’t believe how busy it was compared to Torpoint. On the way to the Houses of Parliament we loved seeing Buckingham Palace and the changing of the guards. As we arrived at the Houses of Parliament we were so eager to explore. On our tour we saw Ed Milliband and Mr Blunkett. We learnt lots about the Government and even got to watch a debate in the House of Commons! When we went to collect the award we were able to knock on the grand speaker’s apartment door. It was an honour to collect the award from the Rt Hon John Bercow. He told us how impressed he was with our project of helping to save the wildlife in the seas! It was so good to have Sheryll Murray, our local MP with us too! It was the most memorable day of our lives. We love being on School Council because we can make a difference to our school, our community and the wider world around us!

Views sought on development of town site Local residents have a chance to have their say in how the area at the bottom end of the town, including the Torpoint Library, car park, old fire station, community health centre and police station could be redeveloped. The police have recently undertaken a review of the policing for Torpoint and the Rame Peninsular and have said they will continue to police the area with an office and police officers operating from the town. They have identified that the current station is too big and is not fit for the requirements of the modern Community Policing Team and are looking to relocate within the town boundary. The Library with the One Stop Shop service is a key community facility and will continue to be in the foreseeable future. The current facility and the car park are in need of modernisation to suit the changing requirements of the community today and for the future. With the health centre being vacated at the end of the year the various authorities, including Torpoint Town Council, Cornwall Council, Devon and Cornwall Police and the NHS are working together to ensure the future use of the land is coordinated and developed such to regenerate and rejuvenate this old part of town. FROM THE MAYOR’S PARLOUR It is good to see an improvement in the weather which hopefully it will continue. It is with sadness to report that Paul Roper will be stepping down as our Torpoint and District photographer/ correspondent after more than nine years, covering local stories and taking photos. Paul has always been on hand for any function. I know Paul would like to thank everyone for giving him the opportunity to cover some interesting and varied events over the years. You can still see some photos on his website paul@ paulsfotos.co.uk or at the Torpoint Archives were he has passed in a lot of photos. Paul and Chris enjoy your retirement we will miss you!! Torpoint Fire Service fireman Stephen Gill and colleagues from Bodmin were awarded the RSPCA Bronze Gallantry Medal as well as Peter Ferris, RSPCA Animal Collection Officer, for their part in the rescue of a pony from cliffs at Rame Head. The citation for the award said it had been a complicated rescue involving the RSPCA, fire service, the Royal Marines and veterinary staff, and took over six hours from the time of the call to the pony being rescued. Beware of Scams - The National Scam Neighbourhood Team Leader Sergeant Ashley Putman said ‘ Sadly we have had scam cases in our area, the thieves target vulnerable or elderly people in particular and are organised, believable and professional in their approach. The key message for people is that genuine Police officers & Bank Staff will never ask for your PIN, bank card or for cash over the phone. Neither will they ask you to make bank transfer or keep details from bank staff. If you have any concerns please call using the National contact number 101 or in an emergency or urgent situation 999. In recent cases first contact is usually by phone and it is very important that you allow your landline to clear for five minutes or use another phone to call the police or your bank. We would also ask that you pass this message to friends, neighbours and family as raising awareness is a very important tactic in tackling this type of crime. 90 bands at Looe Music Festival

Looe Music Festival is taking to the stage for the fourth year in a row, sporting a fresh new look and promising a weekend of top music and eclectic entertainment that is even bigger and better than ever. One of the best late summer festivals, Looe Music Festival will be in the spotlight from Friday September 19 to Sunday September 21. It promises high energy, back-to-back beats on the beach and the chance to discover new musical acts whilst exploring the picturesque fishing port of Looe in south east Cornwall. This year the festival has a new-look logo and colour-scheme featuring fresh blues and bright yellows that clearly communicate the beautiful beachside location. This year’s hot headliner on Saturday will be Squeeze, who first exploded onto the music scene in 1979 with their legendary album ‘Cool for Cats.’ Sunday headliners are Awardwinning hard core folk punk artist Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls. Over 90 bands are already signed to appear in 2014, with a whole host of household names, emerging talent and wildly wonderful acts set to grace the stage.

To keep it real on the Friday, Devon-based singersongwriter and filmmaker Cosmo Jarvis will be performing a set on the main stage. He will be supporting pioneers of the London acid jazz scene and main stage headliners, The Brand New Heavies. On Saturday, London-based band Tankus the Henge will be creating drama with their ‘apocalyptic carnival’ inspired brand of music. Named as one of 2011’s ‘Top Acts to See’ at Glastonbury, they draw influences from many sources, including rock ‘n roll, gypsy music, ragtime and ska. The internationally famous Red Hot Chilli Pipers will introduce the festival crowd to ‘bagrock’. The Red Hot Chilli Pipers have been rocking the world from New York to Beijing with musicianship of the highest order and a passion for bagpipes that leaves crowds breathless. To top off a truly international line-up this year, Hillbilly AC/DC tribute legends Hayseed Dixie will be flying in from America to add a ‘rockgrass’ finale at the harbour. Full price the-day tickets for 2014 are £67.50 for adults, £18.50 for under 18s and under 5s go free. For more information, see www.looemusic.co.uk, follow @Looemusicfest or find us on www.facebook.com/looemusic.

Summer is finally here and the gardens and grounds at Porte Rouge are full of interest with plenty of seating areas and dining areas where residents and visitors can enjoy the pretty garden and patios. Compass Lettings going RNLI teams save woman in from strength to strength difficulty off Whitsand Bay Compass Lettings, a residential lettings agency launched last year by experienced property professional Sandy Lush is going from strength to strength following the appointment of Claire Stanton as a director. Claire has nearly 30 years’ experience in property and knows Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula extremely well. By joining Compass Lettings Claire, whose maiden name is Rundle, is returning to her roots. She was born at Trethill Farm, near Crafthole and worked in the Rame Peninsula for 20 years, with her family still living on the farm. Claire previously worked as lettings director for a large corporate company and was responsible for Devon and Cornwall. No stranger to hard work, Claire’s mantra is ‘every problem has a solution, you just need to know where to find it.’ Claire joined Compass lettings in February and Sandy had no hesitation in inviting her to become a director. Sandy said: “I’m delighted to have Claire as my business partner. Compass is all about good old fashioned customer service and our first priority is to look after the landlords and know each property intimately. “There is a big demand for rental properties in the area: everything from one-bed apartments to four or five bedrooms properties in rural locations.” Claire said: “We look after everything

RNLI lifeguards patrolling at Whitsand Bay have again been in lifesavingaction when they joined with volunteer lifeboat crew from Looe to go to the rescue of a woman in difficulties swimming off Treganhawke beach on May 21. RNLI Lifeguards Beau Gillett and Joe Saunders were alerted to the woman, who had been spotted in difficultly in the Happy Valley area of Whitsand Bay, whilst Looe’s volunteer lifeboat crew were launched the Atlantic inshore lifeboat. Paddling the one kilometre to the location given on rescue boards, Beau and Joe initially couldn’t see the woman in trouble. Whilst Joe paddled into the shore to speak with people on the beach who had heard someone shouting for help, Beau continued the search and located the woman some 350 metres out from the beach in a very poor state. Beau said: “As I reached the lady, who was wearing a wetsuit and small swim fins, she was on her lasts legs with exhaustion and wouldn’t have managed to stay afloat for much longer. I grabbed her arm and pulled her onto the rescue board where she hung on”. The woman was transferred into the lifeboat and met at Tregantle beach by the Tamar Coastguard team and a paramedic, before being transferred by land ambulance to Derriford Hospital for further care. It costs around £385,000 a day to run the RNLI, all of which is generously donated by the public. This might sound like a lot, but we think the 22 people rescued a day (on average) are worth it. Last year our volunteer lifeboat crews launched 8,304 times around the coast of the UK and Ireland, rescuing 8,384 people and saving 325 lives – people who wouldn’t have survived had we not been there. Our lifeguards responded to 19,594 incidents, rescuing 1,567 people and saving 100 lives. And our flood rescue teams in North Wales

There are a wide range of volunteer roles available and you can help us in a variety of ways – just an hour or two will make a difference. WILCOVE What do bugs, books, baskets, the BBC, bees and biscuits have to do with each other? The answer is the activities the ladies of the Wilcove WI have participated in during June. Thankfully the organisers of 2014 Royal Cornwall Show which was held between between June 5 and 7 did not experience the extreme difficulties of the Devon County Show. As usual the Women’s Institute were an integral part of the show providing visitors with refreshments and biscuits as well as displaying the craft, culinary and floral arranging skills of their members. This year’s WI Royal Cornwall Show Competition was entitled a Parish Walk and county WI members were invited to produce a display which showcased four of the following five items: cookery, an item of craft, a photograph, a poem or floral arrangement. Thanks were extended to Sue, Celia, Shirley, Lyn, Julia and Lorraine who put together the entry for Wilcove WI which gained tenth place out of 27 other entrants. Thanks also to Sue, Julia, Lyn and Leisha who took “time-out” to man the WI tea tent. During the same weekend Wilcove WI also had a presence at the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) Annual Meeting in Leeds with one of the members representing Wilcove and the neighbouring WIs of Maker with Rame, Crafthole and Torpoint at the event. While the conference clearly focused on general business and voting for the resolution on increasing organ donation...time to talk there were also present several high profile keynote speakers. With the mandate having been passed with a 98% majority in favour of the resolution the three speakers were introduced: Sir Andrew Motion (Poet Laureate and president of the Campaign to Protect Rural England), Dr George McGavin (Entomologist and BBC presenter) and Bill Turnball (journalist, BBC presenter, amateur bee keeper and Strictly Come Dancing participant). All three speakers were informative and highly entertaining, but common to each was clearly a real passion for increasing the protection of the natural environments at local, national and international levels. Over the next few weeks our delegate Lorraine will visit the WIs she represented to present her written report and feedback on the NFWI meeting. Sadly we go to press before our next meeting when we will host Carol Horsington who will demonstrate the craft of willow work. However please come and chat to us about this activity

and the WI in general at the forthcoming Frenchthemed coffee morning which will be held on Saturday July 12 in Wilcove Village Hall between 10am and 12 noon. Wilcove WI meets at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Wilcove Village Hall and welcomes both visitors and new members.

TORPOINT The president, Rosemary Slee began by welcoming three guests and members at the May meeting. Discussion took place on the resolution asking all members to join the organ donor scheme, which will later be accepted or rejected at the national annual meeting. After some interesting discussion and personal feelings about the subject a vote was taken and the proposal accepted unanimously. Recent activities included a visit to see a spectactular production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert at the Theatre Royal and South Pacific at the Devonport Theatre, both excellent and enthusiastically enjoyed. At the group meeting Wilcove WI arranged a murder mystery, featuring the Torpoint Players who acted a short scenario and the audience had to deduce the murderer, which most of them duly did! Sue Hale reported on the progress of one of the members, Pauline who is currently unwell. Members’ thoughts and prayers are with her at this tough time. The speaker Diane Lawer gave a trip down memory lane with her talk on seaside memories. The talk was accompanied by many splendid pictures from her vast collection of seaside post cards. Winner of the competiton (any article beginning with V) was an attractive Swan Vestas silver matchbox embossed with the famous swan. Betty Tarrant won flower of the month.
