The cheque was presented recently at the Naval Service Recovery Centre at HMS Drake when two mums from the Family Centre went along to hand it over. Donna Evans, whose husband is a submariner and Sheena Adams, together with her baby son Bailey, presented the cheque to Jock Easton, general manager of the Recovery Centre and Nigel, who oversees the Support Hub and Endeavour Centre. Sheena, who is a committee member at Trevorder Family Centre said: “We were very lucky to be able to visit the Naval Service Recovery Centre and we are sure there will be a lot more contact in the future between the Family Centre and the Recovery Centre.” She said that they were now raising funds for bowel cancer, with money collected from baking cakes for their regular coffee mornings. Sheena said: “We would love to

Some of the Torpoint Tornadoes pictured after the half marathon Twelve members of staff and two sixth form students – Matt Allen and Doug Lucking – ran the Plymouth Half Marathon on Sunday April 27. The team were nicknamed The Torpoint Tornadoes! Following a highly regarded member of staff being diagnosed with a brain tumour just before Christmas, the College has undertaken a number of fund raising activities to raise money in support of this valued member of staff and for cancer research. There were a range of completion times from 1 hour 27 minutes to nearly three hours, but all 12 members of staff completed the run. Sixth Formers Doug and Matt completed the half in 1 hour 37 and 1 hour 53 respectively - both amazing times for their first ever half marathon. Everyone ran their own race but a massive sense of accomplishment was felt by all! It was a great day and all members of the college were so proud to take part and to be able to help contribute to this worthy cause. Since Christmas the College has raised over £2,000 for Cancer Research and its half marathon efforts have raised another £2,000 to add to this (and the total is still rising!). Other events that have taken place are Mufti Days, a Silly Surf, (a sponsored very cold dip for some in the Cornish seas!) and students participated in the ‘wear a hat day’ by wearing and building a variety of weird and wonderful hats. The College has been amazed at how generous the staff, students and community of Torpoint and Rame have been and they are going to continue to raise as much money as possible for cancer research.

Torpoint’s newest Weight Watcher leader, who herself shed three-and-a-half stone last year, has ticked one off the ‘bucket list’, when she ran the Plymouth Half Marathon - her first - in aid of local charity Gables Farm. Andrea, 38, from Torpoint has so far raised over £100 for the charity where she fell in love with Springer Spaniel Skye last year. Since then, Andrea could frequently be seen pounding the pavements between Torpoint, Tregantle and Polbathic in preparation for the 13.1 mile run, with her two-year old Springer enthusiastically leading the way. Andrea first started running as a means to exercise her lively Spaniel, maintain her own weight and get more fresh air. Skye took to the activity with relish. Speaking of her first half marathon, Andrea said: “At times I found the training schedule gruelling, I’m not a natural runner, and the weather on the day of the race was just awful. I began to question what I was doing – but charities such as Gables Farm carry out such great work, and it’s all from donations. I wanted to complete the race in under two-and-a-half hours, and I’m delighted to have set my personal best time at 2 hours and 24 minutes. I’d like to thank everyone who donated and supported me on what’s been an emotional and physically demanding experience.” She added, “I can also confirm, that it’s nigh on impossible to tire out a Springer Spaniel– within hours of returning from a long run, Skye was raring to go again!” Looking forward to a brief rest before she tackles the Race For Life 5k event in June, training will recommence, with Skye leading the way once more! Andrea runs Weight Watchers classes in Plymstock on Tuesdays and at Torpoint’s St James’ Church on Wednesdays at 6pm. All are welcome.

Torpoint Twinning Association April 30 - May 4

After 27 years the Torpoint and District Twinning Associations thrives. 52 Twinners made the journey from Bénodet across to Torpoint on 30th April. 10 of the Twinners were children which shows great promise and a rewarding future for the association. There was a full programme of activities designed around all ages to show off some of the best sites and activities in the area. The Thursday programme consisted of a morning at the Royal William Yard with a full guided tour by one of our members. A free afternoon was followed by evening soirées for families to get to know each other. Friday Morning included a conducted tour of HMS Raleigh by Captain Bob Fancy OBE. This was followed by The Town Mayor, Mike Pearn MBE, hosting a reception Buffet in the Twinners honour at the Council Chambers with formal speeches and a stunning performance by the Torpoint Infant School Choir made for a great afternoon. The day was rounded off with all of the Twinners attending a fabulous Barn Dance at the Council Hall—at one point every member was joining in from 6 year olds up to the 72 year olds! Saturday was a special day at Morwelham Quay, which has much historic interest, the youngsters were really excited going on the old train ride into the mine. The train ride was made extra special as the Train driver was a French speaker. The final day saw a traditional Sunday lunch for 90 people at Whitsand Bay Hotel, there was a very friendly atmosphere throughout and it was with sadness thay had to say farewell over a drink at the Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club. The Twinners parted with fond farewells and promises to meet up next year in Bénodet. If you are interested in joining the Twinning Association please contact the Chairman, Eric Fincher on janer-ic8@btinternet.com

The Torpoint Archives have a wealth of information, knowledge, articles and artefacts about the people and the history of Torpoint. They are open Tuesday’s 2-4pm and Friday’s 10am-12pm and 2-4pm at the Council Chambers. If you are researching your local family history they are well worth a visit. Our thanks to Mrs Rosemary Pellew and her dedicated team who were able to provide this piece: Ye Olde Tyhee Serenaders, Church House, 28th February 1914 A highly successful concert was given by Ye Olde Tyhee Serenaders at the Church House, Torpoint, on 28th February 1914, in aid of the submarine A7. The room was crowded, all the tickets being taken before the time and the audience was most appreciative. The first part consisted of a miscellaneous programme, songs being sung by Messrs. Turner, Wakeham, Lovell, Cocking, Short, Bugo, Wall and Willsmore, the choruses being sung in fine style. The boys assisting were Masters Parsons, Cobreen, Veale, Giddy and Underhay, the last-named singing with feeling ‘I Want My Mummy’. The whole gave a spirited rendering of ‘Hail ! King George’. Messrs. Cocking, Lovell, Wakeham and Turner took the parts of corner men, and their jokes caused plenty of fun. Mr. Short was interlocutor. The second part of the concert consisted of an unusual sketch entitled ‘Come In’, the characters being taken by Messrs. Turner, Cocking, Wakeham, Lovell, Hicks, Willsmore and Reg. Pearce, and all acquitted themselves most creditably. Mr. Maurice Cocks presided at the piano and the arrangements were carried out under the direction of Mrssrs. Cocking, Hon. Treasurer and Turner, Hon.Secretary.

FROM THE MAYOR’S PARLOUR The Mayor Choosing Ceremony on May 15 was the official day for me to start my new term of office. It was a great evening with visiting Mayors, Mayoress and Consorts from Saltash, Looe, Liskeard and Launceston, Major Colin Charters, Rob Gibson, President of the Torpoint & Rame Lions, The Street Pastors, many members of local organisations and family and friends. Here is part of my outgoing and acceptance speech: My term of office for 2013/2014 has been a very busy year. Looking back through my diary for the past 12 months Val & I have been invited to and attended over 105 events in Torpoint and around Cornwall. As well as official events over the past year I myself have attended Town Council meetings with our Town Councillors; Thanks must go to them for their support. We have been asked many times which was the best event, but really there is no best as they all bring something different, I will say, that visiting our organisations here in Torpoint, makes me realise how lucky we are to have so many hard working volunteers, without them many of the organisations would close. Our uniformed youth groups are always a credit to the town, both here and when visiting other places. I would like to congratulate all our youth and senior sporting clubs, the managers, committees and players for their dedication and commitment to providing Sport in Torpoint. St Columba and Torpoint Rugby Club have just launched a new youth section and are running the training on Sunday mornings at 10am at the Rugby Club. Torpoint Mini Soccer and Youth Football are training on Saturday mornings. Well done to all the adults who help out in any way. Congratulations to Torpoint Nursery & Infant School, Carbeile Junior School and the Torpoint Community College for their great achievements. The headteachers, teachers, staff and students have done a brilliant job in the past year for the future of our Town. I would like to mention The Torpoint Archives who our preserving the history of Torpoint. Their research and photographs are amazing and interesting for future generations to see what life was like in Torpoint. They are well worth a visit. Thank you to all our emergency services who I know are always busy especially at the beginning of this year dealing with the bad storms. Thank you to our Street Pastors who help to keep our streets safe at night. Rendel Park was reopened for the residents to use, but sadly due to storm damage to the seawall for safety reasons it had to be closed. Work will start in June with the intention of having the park open again by the School summer holidays/early August. The building works at the new health centre at Trevol Business Park is well on its way ready for the opening in November. Thank you to Torpoint Community Events for improving the approach into Torpoint from the ferry with the raised flowerbeds and also for organising the Christmas lights. I would like to thank Chris Harris the Town Clerk, Sharron Parkin the Town Administrator, My Mayor’s Chaplain Rev Lynn Parker, our caretakers Craig, Stan and Peter for all their help during the year, I would like to also wish Tony Smith our handyman/caretaker who has been off long term sick awaiting for his knee to be sorted a speedy recovery. Part of my Acceptance Speech: Thank you to my fellow councillors for voting me in as Town Mayor for 2014/15, I will do my utmost to work for the Town as I have in the past. 2014/15 is once again going to be a challenging year for us, we will be working on our Neighbourhood Plan which is a vital plan for the future of Torpoint. We have and will be taking over various tasks from Cornwall Council. We have a good strong team of Councillors, and if we all work together, this way we will achieve our aims. In the forthcoming Year some of the Events coming up include: Friday June 20 75th Anniversary of HMS Raleigh – Passing Out Parade - Entrance by ticket only available from 01752 813164. Torpoint Carnival on Saturday July 5. Details on posters around the town.

By Martin Bunkum, Pastor, Torpoint Christian Fellowship

Whatever happened to Flight MH 370? It has been a tragic few months with many disasters around the world. The Sewol ferry disaster in South Korea claimed 300 lives most of whom were children. The mud slide in Badakhshan Afghanistan - where over 2,000 people were lost. The continuing civil war in Syria, where countless people are killed and injured every day. The ongoing crisis in Ukraine. The kidnapping of the 240 girls by the Biko Haram in Nigeria. We all have feelings about these tragedies and have a sense that it’s not fair. We long for a better life! Our prayers so often reflect this longing. Where do those longings and feelings come from? Could they have just evolved within us? Or is this further evidence of a creator who has put within us a desire for something better? This leads to another question: If God is a God of love why is there so much suffering? Again this question means there is within us an uneasiness with pain and suffering: a sense that we were made for something better – a life without suffering, pain and evil! It is important that we do everything we can to make the world a better place. Jesus encouraged us to be peace makers, and to care for those in trouble. Yet it seems like our world can never quite escape from the grip of pain, suffering and violence. Our lives are always changing, good times never seem to last long enough, and life is always too short. Christians from all denominations believe in an afterlife which is permanent. Jesus said: “I go to prepare a place for you.” In the Bible we find promises of a ‘new heaven and a new earth’ a place where there is no suffering, no mourning, no crying and no death. The afterlife is free from evil, loss and uncertainty. In fact if you take a fresh look at Jesus and everything he stood for, you will have a glimpse of eternity. Jesus through his death and resurrection made a way for us to enter eternal life. John 3 v16 says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” The Christian faith gives to us a real hope of eternal life and encourages us to do all that we can to bring a little bit of heaven to earth. RNLI lifeguards save two surfers at Sharrow By Maggie Cardew (Rame Peninsula Branch RNLI) Only days into the start of the 2014 season, RNLI lifeguards returning to patrol at Whitsand Bay went to the rescue of two male surfers after they got into trouble near Sharrow Point. Lifeguards Charlie Gillett and Mike Wafer had been watching the two surfers as they paddled out from Sharrow beach, but noticing the surfers getting washed closer to rocks near the headland, immediately sprung into action. One casualty managed to make his way onto rocks but the other was extremely fatigued and struggling to support himself when the lifeguards arrived on scene. He was closely monitored until paramedics arrived, and was later sent to Derriford Hospital for further medical treatment for water inhalation. Senior lifeguard Charlie Gillett said the situation would have been much more serious had they not been there: “The first casualty was so fatigued that if we hadn’t responded as quickly it may have been a different story. He was struggling to support himself in the water but was able to use his surf board. The tide was increasing and with the wind blowing in a westerly direction with a four foot swell they found themselves in a difficult situation.” Further afield, Exmouth RNLI has become only the second lifeboat station to receive a Shannon class lifeboat in the whole of the UK and Ireland. Marking her arrival in Exmouth on Friday May 9 , the new state-ofthe-art lifeboat received a warm community welcome as schools, local businesses,

families and supporters from around the country flocked to the beach on the sunny but blustery day. Exmouth RNLI, which has been operating since 1858, is the first of five lifeboat stations in the south west that are looking forward to a new Shannon Class lifeboat over the next few years – these include St Ives and Ilfracombe. Local fundraising for the charity received a generous boost from members of the public during our RNLI Flag Week over Easter. Your local Rame Peninsula Branch were delighted to raise a total of £1650 with our door to door collections – so a very big “thank you” to all those across the Rame Peninsula and Torpoint whose kind contribution will help the charity ‘Save Lives at Sea’. Lifeguards are patrolling Sharrow and Tregonhawke beaches daily from 10am to 6pm until the end of September, and Tregantle currently has RNLI lifeguard cover from 10am to 6pm every weekend until the peak season begins in July.

Thought for the Day

The residents of the Old Vicarage at Antony are looking forward to a happy sunny summer with lots going on. The garden has been pruned and the trees surrounding it tidied up letting the sunshine and beautiful view in. The garden is the most perfect setting for cream teas, lazy afternoons, picnics and ice creams but on not such nice days Antony provides quite a varied entertainment programme. We at Antony are looking for volunteers to enhance the lives of our residents, helping out with the social side for example: reading their letters to them or a good book, writing a letter to a loved one, just having a chat with a cup of tea or doing a jigsaw together, going for a walk around the garden or assisting with a vast selection of games outside or in.

Sandy’s continued success in property With more than 25 years experience in the property market, few people are better qualified than Sandy Lush to sell homes in the Rame Peninsula. Sandy, who has lived in Torpoint for a quarter of a century, spent two decades marketing and selling new homes for some of Britain’s biggest house builders. Then in 2010 she joined leading estate agents Marchand Petit at their Newton Ferrers branch as a sales negotiator. Little more than a year later Sandy was given the opportunity of buying the Marchand Petit franchise for the Rame and Torpoint area. Sandy said: “Marchand Petit are a wellestablished independent estate agency with several offices in the South Hams. They are not a franchise business and it was a unique proposal which they made to me - which I accepted with delight. “I worked from home for four months building up a property portfolio, but then

secured premises in Millbrook to open my first branch.” In July 2012 Sandy opened the Torpoint branch in Fore Street - and has never looked back. Sandy added: “Having had the pleasure of living and working in the area for so many years, I know lots of people and I believe I have an excellent understanding of the needs of both buyers and vendors. “As a business we are very customerfocussed and like to think that this approach has led to our growth and success over the last three years.” Since opening the Torpoint branch, Sandy has also established a separate lettings business called Compass Lettings, which is also based at the Fore Street premises. Sandy now employs a team of six staff - including apprentice Olivia Appleby, who is about to complete a Level 2 NVQ

qualification in customer service with the Skills Group and is set to embark on a Level 3 in Business Administration. Olivia, who is 20, joined Sandy’s team at Marchand & Petit 18 months ago - and has quickly established herself as a valuable member of the team. Sandy said: ‘This was Olivia’s first job on leaving college and we are delighted with the progress she has made. She is dedicated, hard-working, well-presented, an excellent time-keeper and always willing to learn. She is a valued member of our team.” Olivia’s dedicated training co-ordinator at Skills Group, Emma Comber said: “Olivia is an exceptional candidate who has fitted well into the team, and quickly earned a pay raise for her dedication and overall work ethic.” Olivia Appleby - apprentice of the month

Pensioners’ Voice Maker with Rame May meeting Last month, for a few days, an extraordinary vessel could be seen standing in the garden of the Kingsand Community Hall. It was a sailing craft built by the pupils of Fourlanesend School and made only of recycle-able materials. The history of its construction was to have been the subject of the talk for May 8, but, unfortunately at the last moment, the speaker was unable to attend. However, our resourceful Chairman, Mr. Steve Michael, produced the necessary for a game of Bingo, this was thoroughly enjoyed by the players, particularly those holding winning cards! The meeting had opened as usual with the hymn and prayer, then on to the notices. Members who intend to go to Birmingham for the Frankfurt Christmas Market on November 14 from Friday to Sunday will have to pay £79.99p for the 3-day break, names please to Mrs. Pam Michael. Bookings, with deposit of £50 also being taken for the Spring Holiday next year to Holme Lacey. The raffle was drawn, tea and biscuits served and the afternoon closed at 4.15pm. Mr Michael reminded members that the next meeting would be held in Kingand Community Hall on Thursday, June 12 at 2.30pm. Anyone over the age of 50 would be most welcome to attend.

WILCOVE On the Rame Peninsula it has been another busy month for our members as local communities celebrated the arrival of spring with a diversity of May Day events and processions. On Friday May 16 Wilcove WI hosted the ladies from Torpoint, Rame with Maker, Crafthole and Downderry with Seaton WI’s for the local Spring Group meeting. Entitled a ‘Murder Rehearsed’ the 45 ladies present were invited to join Inspector ‘Nick M All’ in determining which of the seven members from the Barnstormers amateur dramatic society had murdered ‘Mr Red E Cash’ in the props room prior to the meeting. The players who had very colourful profiles each had a very strong motive to ‘do the old boy in’ however it was the observant ladies of Downderry and Seaton who correctly identified Roberta Legge (a retired dancer and founder member of the group) as having committed the murder using a vase. Our sincere thanks to the Torpoint Players who produced and staged what was a very enjoyable evening. The Wilcove WI meeting in May focused on discussion of this year’s annual resolution ‘Increasing Organ Donation’ in preparation for the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) meeting in June which is to be held in Leeds. With a long history of successful campaigning the NFWI hopes to engage government ministers in raising public awareness as to the importance of discussion and registering the intent to donate organs or tissue on the national transplant register /www.transplantweek.co.uk/register. As in the past, the current WI campaigns are as diverse as our members. From ‘care not custody’, to the shortage of midwives or the plight of honey

Visitors from Torpoint’s twin town of Benodét in France were treated to a special performance by the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth during a visit to HMS Raleigh. The group of 52 people were invited to the Royal Navy training base, where they were given an insight into the role of the establishment, as part of their week-long visit to the town hosted by the Torpoint Twinning Association. The visitors were accompanied to HMS Raleigh by the Mayor of Torpoint, Councillor Mike Pearn. He said: “Torpoint has been twinned with Benodét for 28 years. The people of the town visit us every other year and we visit them in between. We were very pleased to be able to bring them to HMS Raleigh to show the community connection between the town and the Royal Navy.” During their visit the Band performed a range of music during a 20 minute marching display Captain Bob Fancy, the Commanding Officer of HMS Raleigh, said: “There is inevitably a language barrier when hosting visitors from other countries, but music is a great way of breaking down those barriers. Our French guests were very appreciative and we were grateful for the opportunity to meet them. Martine Berrou, translator for the French visitors, said: “The people I have spoken to were very happy with the visit to HMS Raleigh. They didn’t expect the quality of reception they bees the members of the WI continue to voice had and enjoyed the their concerns at regional and national levels music.” about issues that matter to their members and communities.
