Lauren Woolsey, head girl of Torpoint Community College was presented with the prestigious Person of Courage Award at the Town Service and Civic Awards ceremony in July. Lauren has trained as a peer mentor in school to provide advice and help to other students. She has campaigned for anti bullying awareness throughout school, and she is working closely with the school council to further her anti- bullying message. Lauren has been part of Tours of the College, the 50 year celebrations of the college, giving speeches at Year 6 Open Evenings, student surveys with outside agencies and representing the college with all visitors. A recommendation from her tutor said: “She is fiercely independent - she refused her statement of Special Educational needs due to disability as she felt she didn’t need it anymore. She is passionate about pursuing her ambitions to go to university and become a writer and she won’t let a silly thing like disability get in her way. “She has attended university Open Days on her own, making her own way there and back - with no concern for the difficulties in travelling this might cause. She is never anything but positive and open and friendly. She is a loyal and caring friend and an excellent and conscientious student. Lauren has overcome her disability and is passionate about pursuing her ambitions to go to university and become a writer. The Award was presented to Lauren by Torpoint Mayor Mike Pearn. He said: “About 18 months ago, Val and I visited Torpoint Community College and we were both impressed by Lauren, who escorted us around the College and explained the various activities and departments to us.

King’s Troop will spend a week’s rest at Mt Edgcumbe – and will visit Torpoint The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery will be spending a week long summer camp at Mount Edgcumbe House & Country Park in September. The King’s Troop RHA will be arriving on Sunday September 14 with 30 horses and 45 mounted gunners for one week’s rest and recreation (R&R) at Mount Edgcumbe. The camp is a time to rest the horses and mounted gunners from their busy schedule of official ceremonial commitments in and around London. During their stay they will attend an official parade in Torpoint - on Wednesday September 17 (6pm-7pm) and will also hold an informal open day for members of the public by way of a thank you for hosting the Troop during their stay, on the Rame Peninsula on Saturday September 20 on the lower lawn at Mt Edgcumbe Park. During their week long stay the morning routine will focus on horse R&R with ride outs through Mount Edgcumbe park and probably a ‘dunking’ for the horses -with a maximum six horses at any time - off Cawsand Beach.

A busy summer for the award-winning Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir will benefit a range of charities including Kingsand Institute’s iconic clock tower which stood precariously after February’s storms. The choir has approved a £250 donation helped by proceeds from an open-air concert on Cawsand Bound, on Wednesday, August 6 at 7.30. It follows a similar gig on The Green, Kingsand, a fortnight earlier, and maintains a choir tradition - they helped raise thousands in their community for the Boscastle floods. A further tower restoration concert is scheduled later this year. Most engagements are for good causes: from helping the roof funds of local churches to almost £75,000 spread equally among the RNLI, Cornwall Hospice Care, and Radio Cornwall Charity Appeal by the Cornish Federation of Male Voice Choirs. The Rame men proudly joined in playing to a capacity Royal Albert Hall last November. The choir is in concert on August 16 at Saltash Wesley Church (7.00pm), and on September 13 at the acoustically majestic Plymouth St Andrews Church (7.30pm) with the Welsh Brymbo choir. Rehearsals proceed, meanwhile, for next month’s Gorsedh Kernow in Torpoint’s Thanckes Park (Sept 6), Looe Music Festival, and various weddings. This follows a successful June concert at All Saints, Millbrook, under the choir’s acclaimed professionals: musical director Jonathan Delbridge and accompanist Elizabeth Sidebotham. It also featured gifted local teenage soprano Annabel Kennedy. Their comforting voice supported the Maker funerals in July of choir stalwarts Barry Gallagher, former chairman from Millbrook, and founder member Ivor Nichols of Cawsand. The choir meets at 7.30pm every Wednesday in Cawsand Community Hall. Visitors and new members are welcome. With an eclectic repertoire ranging from Haydn to Freddie Mercury, and organ and accordian solos from Bach and Souza to Fats Waller, there’s something for every taste. Many members also perform in the Halfway Harmony which favours sea shanties, comedy, and folk - preferably Cornish. Recent appearances include Torpoint Rowing Club, Looe Mill Centre, Teignmouth Folk Festival, and The Royal Cornwall Show, with a live broadcast on Radio Cornwall feauring their signature number, Minadhu Breaks, by local musician Pete Staniforth. Harmony beneficiaries include Cornwall Air Ambulance and Shelterbox - 15 boxes despatched thus far to such as the Congo, Philippines, Somalia, Kenya, Pakistan, Peru, and Korea. There were many great fancy dress costumes and outfits across the categories. Competition was tight with some of the younger entries receiving joint first prize certificates. The judges for the day’s Fancy Dress competition included the new Lions President and his wife Steve and Lyn Murray, The Captain of Raleigh and his wife Bob and Sarah Fancy, the Milbrook Village Crier, Clive and Julie O’Shaughnessy and Mike and Val Pearn the Town Mayor and Mayoress. The procession around the Town Centre was led by classic cars including a 1912 Hudson. The jovial parade took the fancy dress entrants around York Road, Antony Road and back in to St James Road. Well done to all the entries and the organisers of another fantastic town event. Town Centre Development Consultation Torpoint Council held a consultation event at the Carnival in Cambridge Field on July 5. The stall saw Town Councillors with support from the Cornwall Council Planning Team seek the view from the community on the future of the bottom end of the town centre. The event was a great success with views taken from over 100 people between the ages of five to over 70 years old. The views are currently being collated and will inform the way ahead for the area. It is intended to hold similar events over the coming months as the future of the area is considered further. “A Taste of France” will be presented by Torpoint & District Twinning Association for all the family in Benodet Park on Monday August 25, from 2pm to 5pm. There will be delicious french desserts, crepes (with various fillings), teas, coffee and juice, table top stalls, face painting, games, coconut shy , things to make and do for the children and much more.

Torpoint Town Mayor, Councillor Mike Pearn, received an unexpected surprise at his own Civic Service on July 13. Mike had been decorated with the MBE by HM the Queen some years ago, but the Members of Torpoint Town Council felt that his lifetime of dedication to Torpoint and its Community should be recognised by the Town. A resolution was passed in September 2013, granting Mike the honour of Freedom of the Town. Sir Richard Carew Pole Bt, Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall, presented Mike with the Key to the Town and a framed citation, which had been signed by all of the Torpoint Town Councillors. In response to his award, Mike said that to be honoured by the Town in this way was “amazing”; he also thanked his wife, Val, and all those who had helped and supported him in trying to make Torpoint a brilliant place in which to live. Torpoint Town Mayor’s Civic Service and Awards The Civic Celebrations on Sunday July 13 saw many of the Town’s organisations and local dignitaries turn out for the parade from the Council Chambers down to St James Church. The church provided the perfect venue to a special service which included music by the Town Band and songs from some of the Town’s very talented singers. The Torpoint Nursery and Infant School Choir performed a special request from the Mayor and Mayoress - ‘The Ferry Song’. For those of you who have not heard it it is truly memorable and can be found on YouTube. Megan Devey gave a rendition of Skyfall which was equally mesmerising. The Mayor’s Charity has this year raised over £3000 from which the Mayor presented donations of £500 to both the Torpoint and St Columba Rugby Club, and Torpoint Athletic Football Club who both continue to develop their sports facilities to support a range of teams from youth through to adults. This year’s Civic Awards were also presented to: Paul Roper - Citizen of the Year (see Mayor’s column on page 5) Lauren Woolsey - Person of Courage - see front page story Torpoint Lady Singers - Organisation of the Year In January 1987, eight ladies, all living in Torpoint, met and decided to form a choir; 27 years later the number of members has increased to 35, with some of them travelling from other villages and towns, which is a tribute to the expertise and patience of their musical director, Sylvia Fraser and the exceptional quality of their accompianist, Sue Westwell. Over the years the choir has raised over £40,000 for various charities. The choir serves two purposes; to enhance the joy of singing and love of music and to bring enjoyment to other people and, at the same time, raising money for worthwhile causes, they also sing at concerts, weddings, funerals and Civic Services.

‘Chernobyl children’ enjoy their stay A group of eight children from Belarus recently enjoyed a much needed month long holiday, staying with local families in and around Torpoint. The children, all aged between eight and 12, have to lives with the contamination of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and all the ensuing problems. It has been proved that the month spent away from the contamination can boost their immune system for around two years. One of the highlights of their stay was a visit to Torpoint Fire Station, courtesy of Firefighter Derrick Hunt and some of his crew. The group also visited Crealy and the Plymouth Ski Centre, went 10 pin bowling and three of the group learned to swim at the Whitsand Bay Holiday Park. Millbrook Football Club donated kit bags and

presented them to each of the children and the leader at a fun day which was held at the club and over £300 was raised towards the cost of next year’s group of children. The Tamar East Cornwall Link of the national charity Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline would like to express their sincere thanks to all of the above and also to Mr and Mrs P Willoughby of Kingsand, Mr and Mrs A Willoughby and family of Antony, 3rd Torpoint Brownies, the committee and members of Antony Village Hall and everyone else who helped to make the children feel so welcome and were so generous to the group. For more information on the work or if you would be interested in hosting a child please contact Lorraine Seldon 01752 812226 or Jane Camp 01752 823955.

Millbrook resident Nicci takes on challenge for Guide Dogs Nicci Hastings from Millbrook is taking on the challenge of a lifetime to raise money for Guide Dogs by participating in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey100 cycle event on Sunday August 10. Prudential RideLondon is a worldclass festival of cycling taking place over the weekend of Saturday August 9 and Sunday August 10. Taking a cue from the London Marathon, amateur cyclists also participate in the Prudential RideLondonSurrey100 Рa 100-mile challenge on the same closed roads as the professionals, with the added incentive of raising money for good causes. Celebrating the legacy for cycling created by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Prudential RideLondon-Surrey100 starts in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, then follows a 100-mile route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside. The route finishes with riders pedalling towards Buckingham Palace on The Mall. Nicci will become a Guide Dogs hero by undertaking this challenge after months of training and preparation. Busy times at Port Rouge As usual Porte Rouge has been busy with activities and events. This month we have made the most of the beautiful weather with a Pimms Afternoon held on the patio. The residents and their visitors were entertained by our regulars, the duo, Poslips, in glorious sunshine, whilst enjoying a refreshing glass of Pimms (other drinks available) and a cream tea. A few adventurous residents got up and danced to some of the old tunes. We are well under way with plans for the summer fete. All are welcome to join us on the August 9 from 2pm to 4pm. As usual we ran our ‘Strawberries and Cream’ stall at the Torpoint Community School on Saturday July 19. Finally a thank you to the staff and relatives who attended the ‘Meet and Greet’ Cheese and Wine evening at Porte Rouge. Relatives and friends were able to meet Mary Mitchell the new manager and Sally Green the Compliance Manager and talk about the future plans and ideas for Porte Rouge.

marathon in May but unfortunately was forced to withdraw due to an ankle injury. Nicci is also holding an afternoon tea/lunch event at Kingsand Community Hall on Sunday August 17 between 12 noon and 3pm – everyone is welcome. There will be a good selection of sandwiches and homemade cakes to tempt you along with a nice cup of tea/coffee. There will also be a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses. Nicci is hoping to raise £550 to support Guide Dogs’ work providing more four legged heroes to give freedom, mobility and independence to people who are blind or partially sighted. Nicci said: “There are three things that most of us take for granted; our vision, freedom and independence. Blind and partially sighted people don’t have those seemingly simple luxuries and can feel isolated and frustrated. Having a guide dog can give them the freedom and independence to go out for a walk, meet friends for lunch, go to work‚ every day activities that many of us do without a second thought. What’s in a name?

I’ve heard some strange names for Christians in the past, such as ‘do gooder’, goodie goodie, Bible bashers and Holy Joes - you may know more! I agree with ‘do gooder’ because we honestly try to do ‘good acts’, especially acts of kindness, compassion etc, but the other names are not appropriate at all. I am not a ‘goodie goodie’, far from it. I make mistakes all the time as I follow the example of Jesus Christ. I am not a ‘Bible basher’. I neither bash my Bible, nor bash people with it. We are all called to share the word of God, but in unobtrusive ways. Forcing scripture down the necks of people who we ‘think’ are not Christians, is certainly not a way of attracting them to the good news within the Bible. How do Christians know who is a Christian, or not anyway? We should never assume, or judge either. My Christian name is Alison not Joe, and I am certainly not Holy, but striving to lead a better life, following the wonderful teaching of Jesus Christ. Most days I fail in one way or another,

but every day is a new beginning so I try again. As a minister of three churches with two chaplaincies in Plymouth I am privileged to listen to a lot of life stories. Obviously the content is confidential, but I would like to share a few names that I’ve been called... Friend, good listener, soul mate, counsellor, spiritual director, advisor , disciple, hard task master, teacher and preacher. I could argue with some of these, I know, appreciate and respect the source. Many people say that they are not religious, but my experience has taught me that most people are aware of their spiritual self. Conversations about their values reveal to me that they are closer to God than they realise. Unemployment, financial difficulties, illness are but a few experiences which can make us or break us. All I know is that being a Christian helped me with all these experiences and more besides. God is as real as the air we breathe and as close as a prayer away. With love in Jesus, Alison (friends can call me ‘old vic, others had better not.’)

FROM THE MAYOR’S PARLOUR Firstly, I must thank all the people and organisations of the town who attended the Civic Parade and Service on Sunday July 13. Thank you to Sir Richard and Lady Mary Carew Pole, Captain Bob and Sarah Fancy, Sheryll Murray MP and Bob Davidson, Maureen Fuller ‘Grand Bard of Cornwall’ and all the visiting Mayors and Mayoresss from the South East Cornwall area. I must thank all my fellow Councillors and Chris, Milly, Rachael and Stan for their help and making sure that the event went off smoothly. Revd Lynn Parker gave a lovely service, thank you Lynn and to the members of the church. At the Service I presented The ‘Citizen of The Year Award’ to Paul Roper, Paul has served the Community for many years, firstly as our community policeman, in the good old policing days when it was OK to give an offender a telling off and sending them on their way. On retirement from the police, he took up photography becoming the local correspondent and photographer for the Cornish Times. He has been a great support to me in my role as Mayor, attending various celebrations, bringing a touch of humour to occasions and telling everyone what to do when the recipients of bouquets etc do not really know what to do with us! He donates a copy of all his photographs to the Torpoint Archives which will provide a potted history of events in Torpoint for many years to come. Details of the other awards are included in the Tyhee Times article on page 3. I also presented Penny Geach with a bouquet of flowers on retiring from Carbeile Junior School after 24 years service firstly as a teacher and then taking over the head teacher’s role. I would like to thank Penny for all she has done for the children of Torpoint and wish her all the very best in her retirement. The tables were then turned on me by the Town Clerk when he asked Sir Richard to present me with the ‘Freedom of Torpoint’ scroll and key which I was very honoured to accept. Special thanks go to the Royal Marines Volunteer Cadet Band, the Torpoint Town Band, the Nursery & Infant School Choir, Megan Devey, and also the road marshalls who kept the traffic flowing. They all did a great job! The Gorsedh takes place on Saturday September 6 at Thanckes Park. The parade of Bards will be leaving from the Torpoint Community College at 1.45pm for the service at 2pm Thanckes Park (The Lawn). Further details www.gorsethkernow.org.uk. On Wednesday September 17 at 6pm the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery will be visiting Torpoint. The Mounted Kings Troop will ride up through Fore Street to Thanckes Park (The Lawn) where they will be welcomed to the Town and a salute will be taken. Road marshalls are required for this event, if you would like to help out at this or any other event by becoming a Road marshall, training will be given please contact the Torpoint Town Council Offices on 01752 814165. In September Torpoint Town Partnership (TTP) is going to join Cornwall’s ‘Paint the Town Gold’ – an awareness and fundraising campaign for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in association with CLIC Sargent the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity. Please watch out for posters to see what the TTP will be doing during September to raise funds for this very worthy cause. Your support will be most appreciated. Date for your diary: Cornwall’s Armed Forces Day in Torpoint – Saturday June 20 2015. Swans: There have been reports of dogs attacking swans on our beaches. It is a criminal offence harming a swan in any way. Prosecutions are becoming more commonplace now that conviction precedents have been set. So please keep your dog on a lead if you see swans nearby. Seagull Proof Bags: New reusable seagull proof protective rubbish sacks are now on sale at £3.50 from our Library/One Stop Shop. The decision to sell the bags has come following a successful trial in five areas in Cornwall. The seagull proof sacks hold around three black sacks of rubbish and have a weighted base, a secure velcro fastening and a tie at the back to stop them blowing away after collection. The sacks are designed to deter attacks on bags of rubbish by most animals and birds. College fashion shows raises £800 for oncology ward Torpoint Community College hosted its annual Fashion Show in July. The show celebrated the work produced by textiles students at the college from Years 9-13 and included both GCSE and AS/A2 level work. The show was enhanced by music from numerous singers, vocal groups and the school band which, ably led by Miss Emma Luing added some quality entertainment to the evening. Stock from local businesses, ‘Jane Louise’ at Liskeard and ‘Studio 2’, Torpoint was modelled by both staff and students and showcased the superb variety of clothing that is available locally. The show was rounded off with a

glittering ‘Casino Royale’ Bond themed finale, where staff from the college modelled exclusive evening wear from ‘Jane Louise’. Staff and friends of the college also sold hand made craft items during the interval to support the aim of the evening which was to raise money for ‘Fashion For Feasty’, all money going to the oncology ward at Derriford hospital. Liz Bell, faculty leader art and design, said: “I was delighted with the support from the audience on the night and very proud of all students involved. The amount raised through this event so far totals £800! Well done to everyone who took part in making the evening such a success.”

Port Vale Football Club spent a week training at HMS Raleigh at the end of July to ensure their players are match-fit for the new season. The League One side used the sports pitches at the base in Torpoint and made use of HMS Raleigh’s gymnasium and swimming pool, during the sessions led by their own coaching staff. Additionally the 24man squad were given an insight into the role of HMS Raleigh and the diverse range of training carried out at the base for the Royal Navy. Team manager Micky Adams was part of the Southampton squad that trained at HMS Raleigh in the 1990s. His assistant, Rob Page, also trained at the establishment when he was a player with Watford. Micky said: “We’re guests of HMS Raleigh and I’d like to thank the base for entertaining us. These five, six days away I always find are beneficial to us in terms of team spirit and bonding, so that’s why we’re here. The facilities are first class and we are away from prying eyes so we can get on and do the training that we need to do. The pitches are good, the PT staff are looking after us, the gym, the pool, it’s all here for us.”

FAMILY BUSINESS WITH A REAL HEART FOR LOCAL COMMUNITY

PENSIONERS’ VOICE - MAKER WITH RAME The Committee of the Maker with Rame Pensioners’ Voice was faced with a decision. It had been hoped that the Midsummer Meeting would be held in the Community Hall Garden, which is being beautifully maintained with lawn and flowerbeds by Mrs Anne Helliwell and her helpers, but the weather wasn’t co-operating. Although rain wasn’t forecast, the sky was overcast and there were suspicious black clouds lurking. So it was decided to hold the meeting indoors, in the Kingsand Community Hall. And so, as usual, there was the hymn and prayer led by the chairman, Mr Steve Michael. He then paid tribute, with a short silence, to Mr Ivor Nichols, a valuable member for many years, who had died recently. Ivor’s widow, Maureen, was attending this meeting,

so our sincere condolences were offered to her in her sad loss. As it was an informal meeting, there was no further notices and no speaker, but Mr Michael did mention that money had been granted toward the improvement of the Hall, particularly re-building , extending and re-furbishing the kitchen. The special Summer Cream Tea was served by the committee (who also did the washing-up) and members were able to enjoy excellent scones, clotted cream and jam with their cups. The chairman thanked the workers for their efforts, the raffle was drawn and before closing the meeting at 4 pm, Mr Michael reminded members that there will be no meeting during August, and he looked forward to seeing them again on September 11.

WILCOVE Wilcove WI on pinnies, patisseries, Pimms and

summer parties. It seems strange that we have already celebrated key summer events like; the summer solstice, Glastonbury Festival, Wimbledon and the Tour De France. For the ladies of the Wilcove WI the summer is a time to break out the pinnies’ (aprons) and get baking in support of two key annual events. On July 12 we hosted a ‘Very French Coffee Morning’ at Wilcove Village Hall which was enhanced by music from Edith Piaff, the hall dressed in the French national colours and our lovely ladies serving coffee (café) and croissants. The theme for our summer garden party is a very ‘Spanish Fiesta’. Instead of the traditional Pimms we will be serving Sangria and a few tapas alongside our usual spread of afternoon tea/cakes. Our speaker for June was Carol Horsingdon who runs Cornish Willow, a basketry, bentwood furniture and country craft workshop at Henwood near Liskeard. Carol, who has been a basket maker for over two decades introduced us to the materials and techniques she uses in constructing a range of baskets and home wares for the house and garden. Two of the most endearing baskets she brought to show were the Welsh Tea Basket which originates from the Rhonda Valley in Wales and was designed to store the ‘daily use’ china in and the beautifully shaped but remarkably strong traveller’s baskets which were constructed around a hooped frame. The speaker for July will be Chris Wiseman who will introduce a talk entitled ‘Save the Children’. Wilcove WI meets at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Wilcove Village Hall and welcomes both visitors and new members. TORPOINT The President, Rosemary Slee, welcomed members and one visitor to the June meeting and then introduced Lorraine England from Wilcove WI who very kindly came along to give a report on her attendance at the WI National Annual Meeting held in Leeds. The new Chair, Janice Langley, spoke on the WI saying it was the best women’s organisation Inspiring Women but that it needs to attract new members. The Resolution encouraging more organ donation, was passed with a 98% vote. There were three guest speakers, Sir Andrew Motion, who spoke on rural England, George McGovern, who spoke on endangered species and Bill Turnbull, who spoke on life on TV, Strictly Come Dancing and as an amateur beekeeper. All the speakers spoke of the threat to rural England and the environment. Lorraine enjoyed the Annual Meeting and would very much like to be able to go to the Albert Hall for the Centenary celebrations next year. Guest speaker, John Burden, then gave us a very interesting, and at times very amusing, talk entitled ‘Unwrapping the Past’ on the Bodmin & Wadebridge Railway. Several members had been to the railway but for those who hadn’t Mr Burden showed a variety of fascinating photographs and descriptions the valuable work the volunteers have undertaken to revitalise and preserve this historic steam railway which dates back to Georgian times, 1834. We all agreed we are very lucky in Cornwall to have such a

historic railway. Members agreed it would be a brilliant day out to enjoy afternoon tea in one of the luxury carriages of the Cornish Belle. Mr Burden finished his talk by reminding us that our history/heritage is fast-disappearing and that we should all make an effort to record our personal histories for our families before it is all forgotten. The next meeting entitled ‘Being Low Maintenance’ (living without computers, mobile phones, etc) will be held on Wednesday August 27 at 7.30 pm and visitors and new members are always welcome.

CRAFTHOLE AND DISTRICT The strawberry tea,

held at the end of June, was blessed with good weather, and members and friends were able to sit in Barbara’s garden, admiring the beautiful views and generally enjoying a very pleasant social afternoon. Summer months are filled with activities, and the following Saturday was no exception, when the village celebrated its ‘Fun Day’. The theme for the event was, and this will be no surprise, the World Cup. Each organisation was allocated a country; the WI to represent the USA. Beryl McKintosh volunteered to decorate the stall, and made a very professional job of it. So stunning that the WI won the prize for ‘Best decorated stall.’ Members pitched in with pecan pies, tiny cakes sporting an eatable flag of the country, corn bread and many other delicious items. Lorraine England of from Wilcove WI came to give a talk on the May AGM, held this year in Leeds. Speaker at the July meeting was Angela Collins, who choreographed all the Music of the Night shows in the Royal Citadel, Plymouth. The talk was entitled ‘It’ll be all right on the night’ although it soon became apparent that it was quite often not. Out came the reminiscences of a lifetime in the theatre, her speedy delivery taking us past recalcitrant scenery, flying false teeth, a crinoline which slid gracefully to the ground, leaving the wearer with no option but to step carefully out of it and carry on. On they went, the anecdotes of a lady who once auditioned alongside Julie Andrews. A good laugh leaves everyone cheerful, and it was a happy group of ladies who left the hall that afternoon.
