Now in their sixth year, the awards aim to promote and empower country-based entrepreneurs. Helen is a homeware and textiles designer specialising in traditional hand printing techniques. www.total-design.co.uk Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club held a highly successful open day in July which attracted dozens of people who wanted to try out a range of water sports on offer. The event also marked the official launch of the club’s new gig rowing section which will feature regular Wednesday evening rowing sessions. Many locals went along and tried out rowing in the new half-gigs or had a go at dinghy sailing, yacht sailing and wind-surfing. Visitors also got out in kayaks and even the scuba diving section got in on the act and had people ‘diving’ in a plastic tub! In sunny, but windy conditions, a band of club volunteers ensured that over 50 people were able to experience one or more free water sports taster sessions with rowing proving a popular option. Visitors were able to look around the club’s facilities which include a licensed bar and members’ restaurant as well as updated changing rooms and workshop and storage facilities made possible by funding secured in 2013 as part of the Inspired Facilities legacy after the London 2012 Olympics. Visitors could also visit the RNLI stand, try to win a prize in the raffle or sample the teas and homemade cakes on the cadet stand. The cadet section is open to young people aged between eight and 18 and it often has a waiting list so it was pleased to raise around £200. Bob Holder, club secretary, has been instrumental in getting the rowing section up and running. He said: “The launch of the rowing section on Open Day has been a real success. “Lots of visitors and existing club members got out in the gigs and really enjoyed themselves. Many thanks to our coaches Lisa, Hayley and Rachel who

made it possible. We are delighted to announce that we will be running weekly rowing sessions during the summer on Wednesday evenings at 6.30pm open to club members. If anyone wants more information they are welcome to email me on secretary@tmsc. org.uk” Steve Creek, Commodore, commented: “Despite the wind being a little frisky at times, it’s wonderful that so many people came along and experienced what great fun it is being out on the water. There was a real buzz and sense of excitement at the club and we gained quite a few new members, mainly family groups. “Thanks must go to the RNLI volunteers who gave their time to come along and support us and to our all own hard-working volunteers and staff for making the day so successful.”

Cats protection branches join forces Cats Protection branches in Torpoint and Saltash have joined forces to create a South East Cornwall Branch of Cats Protection. Cats can look forward to a much brighter future now that the new branch of Cats Protection is up and running in the area. The branch aims to provide an essential cat rehoming service and is made up of several new volunteers who are keen to help local cats in need. Sadly many cats are still given up or abandoned every day, placing a heavy burden on the charity’s services. Cats Protection has thousands of cats in its care at any one time across the UK, all being cared for until loving new homes are found. The branch is keen to encourage people to come forward to help the charity. A spokesperson for the new branch said: “Volunteering is a fun and rewarding experience, particularly if you have a skill that would benefit the

charity or would like to develop new skills by taking on a fresh challenge. Our volunteers gain a great deal of satisfaction helping cats to get a second chance in life, while meeting like-minded people along the way. “We work hard to match people’s skills, interest and time availability to the roles on offer, so if you think you have something to contribute, please get in touch.” Cats Protection South East Cornwall Branch is part of a national network of over 250 volunteer-run branches and 31 adoption centres that help over 194,000 cats and kittens each year. Founded as the Cats Protection League in 1927, the charity adopted the name Cats Protection in 1998. Latest from the Mayor’s Parlour Funding boost for community planning team

The Town Council has been successful in applying to the government for funding to set up a coastal community team for Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula. The team made up of parish councils, business leaders and organisations from across the peninsula will be given £10,000 to develop an economic plan for the area to be published by the end of January 2016. Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula have made excellent progress completing their respective neighbourhood development plans; the economic plan will build on these with a firm emphasis on projects that utilise the waterfront. The economic plan will enable Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula to bid for a share of the £90m of funding that will be made available for coastal communities over the next five years and ensure the plan is delivered. Torpoint’s Neighbourhood Development Plan The steering group is continuing to meet monthly and is making timely progress. The in-depth analysis of the initial questionnaire is ongoing with the full website recently launched, please see www.torpointplan.org.uk/. Steve Morris thanked Steve Murray for all his time and effort throughout his term to make it a successful year in office. Steve Murray responded by wishing all the very best for the new term. Thank’s go to the Carbeile Inn for making the event a very pleasant experience. Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award winners. Leanne Andrews (front centre) will be going to London to receive her Gold award Torpoint Community College and the local community proudly celebrated the success of 16 students who have worked extremely hard to achieve their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The National Trust and Sir Richard Carew Pole kindly allowed the use of Antony House for the presentations and the Mayor of Torpoint Mike Pearn, and Commander Jo Adey from HMS Raleigh, collaborated in jointly presenting the certificates to the successful students. Proud parents were in attendance, together with members of the local community, including the Torpoint & Rame Lions, who very kindly assisted with funding the expedition this year. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Manager, Mrs Lynn Trotter, said that the staff and students at the college, and the local community, are all very proud of these young people in what they have achieved and I know they are now all keen to sign up for the Gold Award - onwards and upwards!

New Lion President Steve, Lion Mary with new member Gillian Howell and Rob Gibson Membership Chairman

Lion Norman Nethercott receives his 30 year Chevron from Lion President Steve Morris Research, Alzheimer’s Research, Nepal earthquake appeal, WWF and Community Action Through Sport. So many congratulations from Torpoint Lions to Erin Smith, Faye Smith, Charlotte Bawden, Bethany Arnold, Georgia Greaves, Chloe Mumford, Chloe Hjarne, Jennifer Parke, Libby Haynes, Loren Pease, Abbie Milliner and Leilah Coombes. Let’s hope that this will go some way to redressing the often negative press that our young people receive. We are very proud of their achievements. The Car boot sale at Windy Ridge has stopped for the foreseeable future because of Looe Lions organising a larger event and the bad weather leading to poor attendance. Money which was raised go to good causes, so thank you for all of you that supported us. We are very happy to have Gillian Howell join us as our newest Lion. Gillian moved into the area and enquired about becoming a Lion so she attended a few meetings and also assisted at some of our events then decided that it was for her so we are very pleased she made that decision. Welcome Gillian and on the same evening Gillian joined us Lion Norman Nethercott received his 30 year chevron to wear with his Lions pin. Norman has seen lots of changes in his thirty years and he has been a very hard working member for the club. He designed and made our famous Santa sleigh seen going around the streets at Christmas taking Santa on his journey. Thank you Norman. We are still short on numbers and do want to carry out the events we have always carried out, so if you are interested in using some hours to help the local community we would love to hear from you. Even if you do not wish to join the Lions we would always appreciate some help at our main events. Thank you. Last but not least is a forthcoming event added to this years calendar, a Fun Dog Show will be held at Mount Edgcumbe estate jointly run by the Lions. A chance to show off your dog or to just come along and enjoy yourselves. For full details of this event see story on page 9.

Des joins expanding Novahomes Following Novahomes’ growing success in the Rame Peninsula, local estate agent Martin Hobbs has extended the company’s coverage by launching a new office in Millbrook, as well as welcoming a new member of staff to its team - Desmond Tynan - to cope with increasing levels of business. Local man Martin, who lives in Millbrook with his wife and their three young children, commented: “Since launching back in February there has been such an increase in business that I was struggling to deal with all the enquiries and viewing appointments, So much so that I soon realised I needed a bit of help! “I am delighted to welcome Desmond to the team in order to cope with the increasing levels of business. I first got to know Des when he worked for another local estate agent and always remembered just how good he was with people”. “I approached Des to see whether he might be interested in becoming the local representative for Novahomes in Kingsand and Cawsand as he lives there, knows the area well, and has dealt with the sale of numerous properties in the area. “If you have bought or sold in the area over recent years the chances are that you have dealt with Des. I’m delighted he said yes.” Desmond added: “I’m very excited by the opportunity and look forward to getting back into it. I still get stopped by people asking for advice on buying and selling, so it will be good to be involved in

The figures have been created by Agrumi, a Hampshire-based company who specialise in designing and growing topiary. The company has recently exhibited an Alice in Wonderland -themed display garden at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Hampton Court Flower Show. Made using living privet (Ligustrum delavayanum) and a wire frame, Alice is joined by the Caterpillar, Dodo and Cheshire Cat. The tallest figure stands at over two metres. Visitors can see the topiary during normal opening hours until the end of August. The Antony gardening team will be running Topiary Tuesdays during that period, when visitors can find out how to care for the living forms and have a go at keeping them in trim. The figures are not the only topiary on display at Antony. Over 300 metres of meticulously cut Yew hedges are used to divide the formal parts of the garden, along with shapes such as the acorn and 9.5 metre-high cone-shaped arbour.

‘Belong to be’...a celebration of all things Cornish

WILCOVE

What could be more delightful than enjoying a warm summer’s evening with good friends accompanied by music and the age old art of story-telling? The Wilcove WI meeting in June was certainly one to remember as we listened to tales from members who had attended the Royal Cornwall Show (Wadebridge), the WI Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, and the NFWI Centenary Conference at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Janet James (Rame with Maker WI) talked about her experience at the NFWI annual conference and ensured it was brought to life with short video clips of some 5,000 WI ladies singing Jerusalem in a magnificent setting. Anne Moore (Wilcove WI) followed Janet’s presentation and kept us entranced with delightful descriptions of her journey to London and attendance at the WI Garden Party in the gardens of Buckingham Palace. Our two speakers (‘singers’) for June were Looe-based duo – guitarist and flutist/percussionist – Roger and Viv Bennet who took us on a folk-style musical ramble through Cornwall’s communities and proud history founded upon agriculture, mining, fishing, feast days, Methodism and nationalism. Starting with a beautiful song called ‘Belong to Be’ which celebrates the Cornish tradition of bell ringing, Roger and Viv then presented ten traditional and original musical pieces which described many aspects of Cornish life and culture which have been lost to the past. Two of the most touching songs were ‘For ten generations of tin’ which spoke of a miners lament as mining in his village declined and ‘Ritew’ which told of the sad loss of a small Cornish village near to St Dennis which lies buried and hidden under China clay. If you would like to experience some of Roger and Viv’s enchanting music you can visit their webpage and listen to short sound-bites (audio files) of the songs they perform at www.rogerandvivbennett.co.uk/setlist.html. On June 26, five of our members joined ladies from the other community groups in Crafthole Methodist Church to learn about food safety. During the morning, our tutor Derek Earl (ESP training) took us through the principles of safe food storage, preparation and handling along with the legislation that surrounds it. On the afternoon of June 24, one of our members Sue joined the ladies of Crafthole WI at their annual strawberry tea which is renowned for a warm welcome and the delicious homemade scones. On July 13, one of our keen crafters Lorraine returned to deepest Cornwall to demonstrate needle felting in the Cornwall Federation of Women’s Institutes marquee at the annual Stithians Show. This event, which started in

Wives Club meeting Diana Lawer of the Plymouth Postcard Collectors Club was the entertaining speaker at the Torpoint Wives Club meeting in June. Her subject was ‘the Great Cornish Pasty’ and the traditions and legends surrounding food that provided an easy sustaining meal for miners and farmers. She said the pasty dated back to the 13th century and the term Oggie, Oggie, Oggie, derived from Hoggan, the Cornish name for pasties. The meat, potato and swede were encased in a pastry shell, crimped on the side, so that miners could hold the crust with dirty hands without ingesting the arsenic in the mine. The crust or ‘croust’ was left for the ‘knockers’ little devils who were supposed to be in the mine. Pasties were never taken on fishing boats as they were supposed to herald bad tidings. Chair Eve Oates thanked Diana and hoped she would return with one of the many subjects she spoke on. Eve also read out a letter from the Marie Curie charity, thanking the group for the cheque which had been presented to them.

Roger and Viv Bennet, who entertained members of Wilcove WI with traditional Cornish songs 1834, is one of the largest agricultural shows in the county (www.stithiansshow.org.uk) and was well attended despite the inclement weather. On July 18, four of our members Carol, Sue, Dot and Val travelled across the Lyhner to parade our banner alongside other local WIs who were attending a centenary garden party in the stunning grounds of Ince Castle. Wilcove WI will not have a speaker in August as we will be preparing to host our annual garden party. The theme for this year’s garden party will again reflect the WI centenary celebrations and the ladies of Wilcove WI will host an afternoon tea-party in pearls, posh frocks, hats and fascinators. The event will take place at Wilcove Village Hall on August 18 between 2pm and 4pm and invitations to the party will be sent out during July. The ladies of Wilcove WI will end a busy month of activities on August 24 by attending a dinner and musical production at the outdoor Sterts Theatre (www.sterts.co.uk) which lies in a lovely moorland setting near Upton Cross Liskeard. Our speaker for September will be Jan Beveridge, who will deliver a talk on ‘Clothes; know your colour and style’. The members of Wilcove WI would like to invite any ladies who are interested in the Women’s Institute (WI) to join us at one of our monthly meetings, listen to our speakers, enjoy some homemade cakes and refreshments and chat about what the WI can offer you. We meet at 7.30 pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Cove Hall (Wilcove Village Hall).

TORPOINT

Fascinators, fancy hats and garden party dresses were in abundance at our summer supper held at Rosemary’s, where members enjoyed a lovely social evening with a glass of punch and a brilliant supper. Rosemary Slee welcomed everyone, including Diane

Stevenson from Crafthole WI, who was our group delegate at the Centenary Annual Meeting held at the Royal Albert Hall in June where the Queen, accompanied by the Princess Royal and the Countess of Wessex attended the morning session. The Queen opened the Meeting with a speech praising the WI and accepted the well-travelled centenary baton. The Queen was also invited to cut and sample the centenary fruitcake. Diane described the singing of the national anthem and Jerusalem by 5,000 WI members as very moving and reported the meeting business which was also linked live to federations across the country. The speakers were very varied and interesting and the day closed with a colourful display on the catwalk of knitted couture by 21 WI members from the Kingston Knitwear Project together with 11 young designers from Kingston University. Rosemary thanked members who had helped at the Lions Fair cake stall earlier this month which was very successful once again. Sue Hale announced details of the forthcoming trip to the Bodmin & Wenford Railway where members will travel on the lovely steam railway from Bodmin to Boscarn Junction and lunch at the Borough Arms in Boscarn. Rosemary thanked the Committee members who provided the delicious supper and Sue thanked Rosemary for hosting a very enjoyable and successful evening. The speaker for our next meeting on ‘Needle Felting’ will be Lorraine England, and this will be held on August 26 at 7.30 pm in St James Church Hall. Visitors are always very welcome.

MAKER WITH RAME

This month we had a full house. His Honour John Anderson who, with his wife Helen has bought a house in Cawsand, attracted a large audience of WI members and visitors with his talk on the work of the Crown Court. At this time, when there are more people in prison than in living memory and where court scenes depicted on television are, to quote John: “appalling nonsense”, it is particularly important to know the true facts. We were taken through the routine of court procedure from the prosecutor’s opening, calls for evidence, judge’s summing up to the jury’s outcome. Then the fun started. Certain scenarios were put to us regarding cross-examinations, and sentencing and we were invited to give our opinions. And give them we did, our ideas being deftly fielded by John. It was an absorbing talk, most stimulating and the greatest fun - to the extent that no one minded tea being late! Earlier our president, Carole, had called for one minute’s silence for Rosalee Pope whose funeral is next Thursday. Outings such as the group trip to Calstock in September and the Cider Farm in October were discussed and names listed. Wendy received her birthday posy and tea and cake was served by Judy and Linda. Our next meeting will be on August 17 in form a a croquet party at the Millfields in Plymouth. The next open meeting will be on September 18 when visitors will be most welcome.

News from the Neighbourhood Policing Team with Sergeant Angela Crow, Neighbourhood Team Leader

Some exciting news this month. PCSO Lee Smith has been successful in applying to join West Midlands Police as a police constable. Lee leaves us on July 18 for a few days off before he starts in his new role on July 27. I am sure you join me in wishing him every success in his new role as a police officer. On July 27, a new member of staff joins the Torpoint team! PCSO Stacey Strevens will start with us and take over from Lee as the town’’s community support officer. She will be mentored for her first few weeks by PCSO Kirsty Down who is part of the Saltash team. They will spend much of their time getting out and about, meeting as many people as possible, so when you see them please say hello! Don’t invite thieves into your house this summer As we approach the summer months, Devon and Cornwall Police are advising of some top tips to help prevent your home from being burgled: • Keep all windows and doors closed and locked • Don’t leave keys in locks, especially near letterboxes or cat flaps (where burglars can get their hand through) • Mark any valuable equipment appropriately (advice on www.devon-cornwall.police.uk) and register it on www.immobolise.com If going on holiday: • Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your home, collect your mail, newspaper and milk so it does not pile up at your front door and draw your curtains. • Don’t advertise you are away by posting it on social media. Burglars use these networks too. Driving the morning after a night out Devon and Cornwall Police is warning drivers of the dangers of drink driving over the summer with its new campaign. Police will be emphasising key messages with motorists across the Force, and drivers should expect to be tested if stopped by police. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the social and personal consequences of being caught drink or drug driving. Whilst many people are aware of the risks around driving whilst under the influence and the devastating consequences of involvement in a collision with death or serious injury resulting, there are social consequences as well. Losing your driving license, potential loss of employment and even your home can all occur as a result of a conviction for drink driving. One message is quite simple - if you could be over the limit, do not drive. It is simply not worth the risks. Monthly figures

The Control Room recorded 175 calls from the public in Torpoint and across the Rame Peninsula. A small number of these were duplicate incidents. Some of the varied calls which police attended included 21 domestic incidents, 20 incidents checking the welfare of individuals, 5 people were reported missing and 33 incidents occurred on the highway. Calls also included 24 incidents of anti-social behaviour reported to us across Torpoint and Rame. The majority of these continue to be neighbour disputes, noise, nuisance individuals and vehicles. These calls also included the 59 crimes recorded as being committed across Torpoint and Rame Peninsula. Torpoint: 29 - 13 assaults (all categories including sexual and domestic incidents), 2 burglaries, 1 attempted burglary, 4 thefts (all categories), 4 criminal damages, 3 public order/harassment offences, 1 possession of a knife and 1 vehicle interference. Several incidents have been reported on the Mount Edgcumbe estate this month, including the arson damage. If you have any information about any of these incidents, please get in touch. Police cadets - Cop car project Many of you will be aware that for the last six months, the cadets have been building an electrically powered go-kart as part of an initiative run by Greenpower Education Trust. All their hard work has paid off and they were able to race it in the regional heat held at Newquay Airport on June 18, coming 13th out of 23 teams despite several mechanical issues on the day! The car was also on display at Armed Forces Day on June 20, when the main attraction seemed to be honking the horn! Efforts will now be on repairing and refining the car, with the intention of participating in the national race in October. Thanks to everybody who has supported the project so far please get in touch if you would like to get involved, all help is much appreciated!

Busy summer programme of events at Old Vicarage Talented young musicians train with the Royal Marines Band

The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth together with talented young musicians from across the South West, was due to gave a free concert at Benodet Park in Torpoint on Thursday July 30 as the Advertiser went to press. The concert was the culmination of a week’s summer school arranged for the young people by the Royal Marines Band, based at HMS Raleigh. The musicians were under the direction of Major Jason Burcham, Director of Music of the Plymouth Band. He said: “The young musicians rehearsed with us during the week and then played alongside the Band on the night. We have some excellent facilities at HMS Raleigh and this summer school is all about sharing the facilities with the young talent and helping them to take their place on the world stage.” Around 25 young people signed up to swap a week of their summer holiday to spend time rehearsing and performing with the internationally renowned musicians of the Royal Marines Band Service. They had opportunity to experience a range of ensembles, from the iconic marching band to the symphonic wind band. The summer school has been organised by Band Sergeant Jason Finch. He said: “The youngsters attending were aged between 13 and 17 years and we had musicians of all standards joining us. We didn’t asked people to audition. All they needed was to be able to play an instrument and read music.”

The Old Vicarage Care Home at Antony has an exciting summer of activities and entertainment planned. We began last week with a musical afternoon performed by ‘Poslips’ a talented duo who entertained everyone with their wide range of contemporary songs and a variety of musical instruments. We continue with our regular Friday Bingo afternoons and look forward to our fortnightly visits from Janine, a talented lady who brings along her guitar and encourages an old time sing-a-long. We were very excited and looking forward to our garden party on July 27 at 2pm (just as the Advertiser was due to go to press). Entertainment was being provided by ‘The Torpoint Ferry Boaters’, a prize raffle was also being held, along with afternoon tea and cakes. We have recently undergone a three day inspection from the Care Quality Commission, and are pleased to report that they have found us to be a good provider. We would also like to thank all the staff, residents and relatives for their continued support in achieving this recognition.

First Sea Lord speaks of the bright future for Navy recruits The Head of the Royal Navy, Admiral Sir George Zambellas, has told today’s recruits that they will be at the forefront of technological advancements. Admiral Zambellas, the First Sea Lord, was visiting HMS Raleigh in Torpoint, where he was the guest of honour at the latest passing out parade. Speaking during the parade he said: “Within your careers, you will witness quantum leaps forward in technology from energy weapons to unmanned vessels; drones not just in the air, but below the sea, and on the sea surface.” The parade marked the successful completion of initial naval training for 42 recruits and eight Royal Naval Reservist, who had completed their own twoweek induction at the training base in South East Cornwall. Admiral Zambellas told the recruits that they were joining a proud, professional, growing Navy, with the richest heritage imaginable. He said: “The Royal Navy will soon receive the two largest aircraft carriers we’ve ever built, alongside new ships, submarines, jets and helicopters. Together, they send a powerful message about what we are, and who we are, as a Navy and a nation, to friend and foe alike. We will protect our Nation’s interest and we will shoulder our responsibilities in this dangerous and uncertain world. We will do that quietly, without fuss. That’s our way.” The First Sea Lord also praised the support provided by families and friends and spoke of his envy of the recruits on parade. He said: “There has never been a more exciting time to join the Royal Navy, and give service to Crown and County. If I could do it

Admiral Sir George Zambellas, the First Sea Lord, meets recruits in their third week of training as they learn military field craft skills all again, I would.” Admiral Zambellas spent the day at HMS Raleigh. In addition to inspecting the parade he also presented prizes to the top trainees as well as long service and operational medals to members of HMS Raleigh’s Ship’s Company. During the morning he was updated on the training provided at the base and toured the establishment to see for himself some of the activity taking place. He met recruits in week three of their 10-week course learning how to operate in the field. The Commanding Officer of HMS Raleigh, Captain Rob Bellfield, said: “The passingout-parade is always a special occasion for the recruits, their families and the staff here at HMS Raleigh. It is the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication.

The recruits completing training have reached the high standards that we require and are now ready to embark on their professional training, whether that be in engineering, warfare, medical, communications or seamanship skills. We were delighted that the First Sea Lord was able to take the salute at the parade here at HMS Raleigh and speak to the recruits about the exciting career they have ahead of them.” HMS Raleigh will provide initial naval training to 2,200 recruits this year. The figure for the next financial year is set to rise to 2,700. The base also provides a range of specialist and continuity training in areas such as logistics support, submarine operations, board and search techniques, weapons training, seamanship and sea survival skills.
