MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR TO All OUR CUSTOMERS

Mount Edgcumbe’s 11th Annual Christmas Fayre returns in December with more stalls than ever before selling the exciting, the gorgeous, the unusual and absolutely scrumptious; chefs demonstrating their culinary skills plus a host of entertainment, there’s something for everyone. Mount Edgcumbe House will be throwing open its doors on the weekend of December 13 and 14 to offer a slice of seasonal cheer, a dash of cooking expertise washed down with lots of ideas for special presents. Even the three wise men are buying their gifts from Mount Edgcumbe Country Park this Christmas. Visitors can see them, and their camels throughout the weekend. The house overlooking Plymouth Sound is preparing for it’s best-ever fayre with over 70 stalls selling crafts, gifts and locally-produced food. There will be a cookery theatre with top local chefs on both days, as well as a full programme of entertainment including music from many of our local choirs including Fourlanesend and Millbrook Schools. The House is decorated with stunning floral displays by the students from Duchy College and to top it all, Santa will also be taking a break from his hectic schedule and be in his Grotto in the Barrow Centre on Saturday and Sunday. There is also a Family Activity Zone this year at the Barrow Centre in the Belvedere with face painting, cookie decorating and the chance to write a letter to Santa. Mt Edgcumbe’s trading partners in the Barrow Centre will be open throughout the weekend with lots of extra treats and goodies to tempt visitors. With six thousand visitors attending the fayre last year it is definitely one of the most popular Christmas events in the area. Admission for the fayre at Mount Edgcumbe House is £3 per adult and £1 per child. There is ample parking available at only £1 per car and a free mini bus service shuttling on the estate on both days (donations always welcome). Christmas book puts children at the heart of a festive rescue A heart-warming new children’s Christmas book which can be personalised to put young readers at the centre of a magical festive story, is now on sale – with all profits supporting the RNLI’s lifesaving work. Michael Nield, crew member at Tower lifeboat station in central London said: ‘The Big Christmas Rescue’ can be personalised so that your little loved one is the star of the story. It is a lovely book and it will make an ideal gift for young children, with all profits helping the RNLI save lives at sea. This Christmas, volunteer lifeboat crew members acrosss the UK and Ireland will be on call, ready to drop everything and save lives at sea when the pager goes off.’ Although RNLI Lifeguard patrols at local Whitsand Bay beaches have ended for 2014, work continues for the vast network of RNLI volunteers across the UK, doing a wide range of roles including crewing lifeboats, acting as community fundraisers, serving in RNLI shops, holding events or being education presenters to enable the RNLI to save lives at sea. It is the RNLI’s volunteer crews which are the backbone of the lifeboat service, physically saving lives at sea. There are more than 4,600 volunteer lifeboat crew members at stations around the UK and the Republic of Ireland, and another 3,000 volunteer shore crew members who support them, ensuring they are available 24/7, whatever the weather, to rescue those who need help. Volunteer crews at Plymouth Lifeboat Station have experienced an incredibly busy time in October launching on no less than 12 occasions. The call-outs included attending a fire in Millbrook Lake and assisting the fire service in ensuring no one was onboard, before

By Maggie Cardew RAME PENINSULA BRANCH RNLI taking the vessel alongside the sea wall to beach for easy access. The first half of November also saw the crews attend two sepearate incidents - launching to assist Police in the search for a missing person in the Torpoint area, and then a second, whilst on exercise, responding to reports of someone shouting for help near Saltash - on arrival MOD Police were assisting a person who had fallen from a dinghy into the water. Meanwhile Looe RNLI Lifeboat station found themselves responding to four call-outs during October, and more recently to an incident on November 15. As this edition of the Torpoint Advertiser goes to print, your local RNLI Branch will have already held our Christmas Fayre at Cawsand Congregational Hall. If you were able to come along enjoyed coffee and cakes, bought RNLI Christmas Cards and stocking-fillers, or bought tickets in the weeks before for the Grand Draw – thank you for your support, and for helping to ‘save lives at sea’. The RNLI Rame Peninsula Branches wishes everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy, and safe, New Year. (The Big Christmas Rescue book is priced at £9.95 and is available to order online at RNLISHOP.org/BigRescue. The last order date to guarantee delivery before Christmas is December 15).

Torpoint Mayor Mike Pearn dropped in to GSR Chandlery to wish Geraldine and Steve Roberts and their daughters Ruby and Caitlyn every success with their new venture

It’s a family affair at GSR Chandlery

Geraldine and Steve Roberts along with their daughters Ruby and Caitlyn have opened a new chandlery business in Torpoint, situated in the Swift Sails Building (formerly Torpoint Rowing Club).

Torpoint Mayor Mike Pearn was among the supporters wishing them well in their new venture. Geraldine will be running GSR Chandlery while her husband Steve is at sea. With their extensive knowledge of all things nautical, this business is sure to be a winner. GSR Chandlery welcomes sailors to come along and visit them. What better place to start a nautical business on the banks of the river with the Mosquito Sailing Club just down the road, as well as complementing Swift Sails.

Bus service changes and a new fare offering in Torpoint will provide improved links to Torpoint’s new health centre. Changes have been made to services operated by First in Torpoint provide better bus connections for staff and patients using the town’s new health centre which is due to open in the New Year. Changes introduced at the beginning of November to Services 81/81A from Plymouth to Torpoint and Inswork will enable journeys to serve the health centre in Trevol Road. The Monday to Friday timetable has been revised with most journeys now terminating at HMS Raleigh. Buses from Torpoint ferry now serve Great Park every 30 minutes alternating with direct buses which miss out Great Park on their way to HMS Raleigh. These run to the ferry on their return. The Saturday timetable remains unchanged apart from some slight retimings to early evening services. The Sunday services are unaffected by the changes. At the same time a new £1 fare (50p for those age 5-18 or NUS card holders of any age) has been introduced for all single trips on the 81/81A between the Torpoint Ferry Terminal (Torpoint side) and HMS Raleigh. Commenting on the changes, Paul Smith, First’s Devon operations manager said: “Feedback about these changes have been very positive so far. This is good news for Torpoint as it will mean staff and patients going to and from the health centre will have peace of mind in knowing that there will be regular bus services to ensure they arrive on time for work and for their appointments. “The other good news is that we are introducing a new £1 fare for all single trips within Torpoint and we hope this will encourage people, especially those who are not currently First customers or have not travelled on public transport for a while, to reconsider using our buses for their local journeys.” Customers wanting more information about the changes or wishing to view timetables for the affected services are advised to log onto: www.firstgroup.com/devon. First is also on Twitter and Facebook, at www.twitter.com/firstbus_devon and www.facebook.com/firstdevon

Council plan to keep services

Cornwall have recently consulted on their Budget for the next three years and the funding and revenue forecast suggest significant savings and efficiencies must be found. Unfortunately the savings required cannot be found without cuts to many of the services they provide. Torpoint Town Council is working to ensure those services most important to the Town are safeguarded, This may result in the transfer of service provision and assets to the Town Council who will provide a more tailored cost effective service to better meet the needs of the Torpoint community. The Town Council believes that any change to services and any developments should be in line with a vision and plan for the town. The Town Council is proposing to complete a Town Vision and Plan during the next year and is working to secure grant funding to undertake widespread consultations and employ a professional town planner.

Controversy was never Busy few weeks for the Lions far away from Jesus... Youngsters who took part in the sponsored swimathon

As Christmas approaches it is always a good time to reflect on the life of Jesus, because whether we believe in Him or not, whether it is politically correct or not, we can’t escape the fact that Christmas is a celebration of Jesus’ birth. To me, not only is Jesus a personal Saviour; I think He is also my all-time ‘hero’ too! Born in a stable to down to earth parents, Jesus’ life started off in total humility. Forced to leave Bethlehem in the dead of night to escape Herod’s tyranny, Joseph and Mary had to flee in haste to save their new-born Son’s life before he was even one! (Matthew 2:16) Controversy was never far off when Jesus was around; many of the church leaders at the time hated him; feeling threatened by the authority with which he spoke. His message, however, was always one of ‘putting other’s first’ (Philippians 2:3), ‘loving our neighbour’ (Mark 12:31), ‘meeting the needs of the lost and vulnerable’ (James 1:27) – the message of love. He was condemned for healing on the Sabbath (Luke 13:14), for fraternising with the social outcasts of his time ‘sinners and tax collectors’ (Luke 5:3031), for showing compassion to those with mental illness (Mark 9:25) and for touching those with leprosy (Mark 1:41-42). He was never afraid to speak what was right. He never people pleased. He was never disrespectful to those in authority. He never attempted to defend himself even when he was wrongly condemned to death. He was always kind, always listened, always made time for people. He always honoured his Father. His message was one of love, forgiveness, peace, hope and life (John 14:6) - for all who call on his name (and that still applies today; Acts 4:12). He was cool beyond measure - and I, for one, am eternally grateful that God came down to earth as a defenceless little baby on that first Christmas Day.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award success for college students

The President and members of Torpoint & Rame Peninsula Lions Club wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a hope you all have a Happy and Prosperous year in 2015. Most of you will have seen a glimpse of Father Christmas as he makes his way through the peninsula. Keep an eye out for posters giving details of his schedule. There will be a Santa Grotto at Mount Edgcumbe during the two day Christmas festival on December 13 and 14. Quite a lot has happened since in the last few weeks. The annual Three Choirs Concert, promoted by our Lions Club, and our launch for the Poppy Appeal, took place on October 23 at St James Church. The packed audience were entertained by the Torpoint Lady Singers, the children’s choir from Carbeile School and the Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir. The Corps of HM Royal Marines Cadets Plymouth gave a very impressive display. Congratulations to everyone who took part. President Steve and other Lions joined various other local organisations on Sunday November 9 and were proud to take part in the Remembrance Parade and wreath laying ceremony. A brief speech was given by Lion President Steve Murray before he presented a cheque for £1,100 to Mike Omahoney, representing The Royal British Legion. The donation was in respect of money raised during the Three Choir, Poppy Appeal Launch.

Sponsored Swimathon

A sponsored Swimathon, organised by Lion Mary Brinkman, took place in HMS Raleigh on October 24 and 25. Young people from Torpoint Community College, Carbeile, Fourlanesend, and Antony Junior Schools were joined by youngsters from Torpoint Guides and Torpoint Scouts to enjoy themselves swimming for charity. All the young people enthusiastically swam an amazing total of 51,656 metres! Robert Dorrington, 10, from Fourlanesend School who swam 78 widths (975 metres) to win the junior section of the swimathon The Senior winner was Joshua Foster, 12, from the Torpoint Scout group who swam 34 lengths (1133 metres). Congratulations to both Robert and Joshua. Monies raised from sponsorship will be divided between Lion’s Charities and the local branch of C.A.T.S (Community Action Through Sport). Our thanks go to all of the teachers, group leaders and supporters who made this event possible. A special vote of thanks goes to the Commanding Officer and staff at HMS Raleigh for their continued support, encouragement and allowing this event to take place.

10-year-old Robert Dorrington who managed 78 widths to win the junior section of the swimathon Anne Creese, (Rame Responders); Torpoint Sailing club cadets, represented by Alex Smerdon, (Mosquito sailing club). Our club were represented by Lion Michael Mathias, Lion John Devine and Lion Steve Murray, who raised much needed funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust), Rainbow Appeal and Walk with Pride repectively. For a number of years, Lion Andrew Burnyard of Callington Lions Club has supported his teenage son John, in raising money for children’s charities. They fundraise with the slogan Walk with Pride and were involved with our walk this year. Their current charity, is Children’s Hospice South West. It had been agreed by the club membership to combine the 20 per cent commission from walkers’ sponsorship, and add to it to make a very credible £1,000 donation to the Walk with Pride appeal. If you would like to take part in next year’s event, contact Lion Steve Murray on 01752 816647 and register their interest for a sponsor form. Believe it or not, it will take place on Father’s Day, Sunday June 21 2015.

International Peace Poster Competition

The local stage of the Lions International Peace poster competition has been won by Lydia Baggaley, 11, a member of the 2nd Torpoint Guides. The competition aims to emphasise the importance of world peace to young people everywhere, and the theme this year was ‘Peace, Love and Understanding.’ The poster was selected by Sarah McLees-Taylor, of Westcroft Gallery in Kingsand, for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the theme. Our thanks go to Sarah and also to June Porter, Leader of the 2nd Torpoint Guide group for her continued support. Lydia will advance to face stiff competition through the district, multiple district and international rounds of the competition. Torpoint We are cheering for Lydia as her poster advances in the competition, and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world.

Christmas stirring duty for youngester sailor Christmas preparations have started at HMS Raleigh with the traditional stirring of the Christmas pudding mix by the Commanding Officer and youngest sailor. Captain Rob Bellfield and 16-year-old trainee Chef Joshua Clark took a turn at stirring the mix, contained in a rum barrel, with a wooden paddle. The mix was prepared by Chef Stephen ‘George’ Nelson, a former Royal Navy chef who now works at HMS Raleigh for ESS, the company that provides the catering and a variety of other services at the base. George was assisted by apprentice chefs, Francesca Keats and Chelsea Roach, in weighing out the ingredients, which included mixed fruit, flour, eggs, suet, zest of lemon and orange, mixed spice, ginger, brown sugar and a dash of rum, sherry and stout. George said: “This is the first time I’ve made a true Christmas pudding mix since I left the Navy 22 years ago. We’ll be serving this up on 10 December when we will be cooking a full Christmas dinner for the trainees. We’ll rest the mix now, then on the day we’ll steam it and it should take about six hours to cook. It’ll be served up with a rum or brandy sauce. This mix should serve about 200 and there will

By the time you are reading this, Torpoint’s Fore Street will once again be lit up with Festive Cheer for all to see. The annual Big Switch on,organised as usual by the Torpoint Town Council is always a highlight, attracting big and little kids from not just Torpoint but even from far away Plymouth. Often local is genuinely better at providing a family friendly atmosphere, making it more easy for the very young to be able to see everything and feel part of it all, and more likely not to get lost in the crowds! Katharine Rawcliffe from the popular Cornish Farm Produce shop on Fore Street said that they were always delighted to be part of the fun – the shop has always enjoyed providing roast chestnuts – and is sure that the smell is part of what attracts the now expected early visit of the big Mr C himself – that plus the delicious hog roast, the laughter in the pubs and squeals of delighted children on the merry go round. Kathy added that the Farm Shop also has plenty of locally cut trees and wreaths for sale to bring more of the Christmas spirit home. Indeed most of your Christmas shopping is well catered for without ever having to cross the Tamar – Jan Brown from Karkadia explains that Torpoint really has so much to offer – her own shop has an even larger selection of personal Christmas cards than some of the national stores in Plymouth’s city centre. Why go anywhere else, muses Jan. And indeed with so much variety and specialist knowledge right on the doorstep on Fore Street, why not enjoy the leisurely, relaxed pace of Christmas, Cornish style this year.

Advertiser December 2014

FROM THE MAYOR’S PARLOUR I am writing this early in the month of November, so by the time you read this the Christmas Lights Switch On will have happened - well done to all concerned. I would like to thank Joyce and her friends from Slimming World for fundraising to buy the Christmas tree for Sparrow Park. With the Christmas period on its way please spare a thought for anybody who is on their own on Christmas Day. If you are ‘home alone’ on this day you can make arrangements to join others at St James Church Hall from 12.30pm – 4pm for a Christmas lunch, good company, light entertainment and a gift to go home with. To reserve a place and further details please contact David on 815486. I would like to thank the organisers, helpers and the chef for all their work in making this a day to remember, I know last year it was a very enjoyable day. It was nice to hear recently from Greg and Robin Wyborn, two ex-Torpoint lads. Greg lives in Canada and Robin in Australia. Here is a copy of Robin’s email: Mr Mayor, My brother, Greg Wyborn, sent me the letter you wrote to him with some information about Torpoint. I was glad to hear the Lawn is safe from developers – it was a big contributor to our quality of life as children. I have lived in Australia since 1970 and I am now retired after a successful working life in the aircraft industry. I joined the RAF from school (before my 16th birthday) and stayed in aircraft maintenance until retiring at the age of 70. The fine education I received at Torpoint Secondary Modern School and technical training in the RAF has provided me with the building blocks for a good life. Regards to all in good old Torpoint. Robin Wyborn. (The Torpoint Archives and Town Council are always pleased to hear from Ex Torpointers.) Police Community Surgeries: The police have re-started their community surgeries as they understand the importance of regularly being in a community location to be able to meet up with and talk to local residents about any policing concerns which they might have. PC Williams and PCSO Halls have been outside Sainsburys and at the Library – the intention is that these will once again become regular monthly dropin surgeries. Torpoint Police are always interested to hear from anybody who has information about suspected drug use around Torpoint or the Rame Peninsula If you have any information about crime or antisocial behaviour in our area, please call the police on 101, email 101@devonandcornwall.police.uk or in an emergency always call 999. Telephone fraud: please help As you may have seen on criminals are targeting people within our communities (including our friends and families) by telephone. These scams are becoming increasingly prevalent in the Devon and Cornwall area with he elderly and vulnerable being prime targets – but anyone can be subjected to this type of crime. You can read about Operation Fardel - the Devon & Cornwall Police response to telephone fraud on page 8. You can also check their website (Op Fardel Community Information) that contains advice, guidance, video clips and downloadable literature to ensure you and all those you know can spot and avoid this type of fraud. Dog Fouling is on the increase around the town and more pressure is now on to issue fines. Most dog owners are responsible and clear up after their dog, but there are a small minority who leave this offensive type of litter on our streets. It is to these we will issue fixed penalty notices. If unpaid, will result in legal proceedings. A Cornwall resident has already been fined £600 for failing to clear up after a dog in his control. Welcoming the sentence, Allan Hampshire, head of public protection and business support at Cornwall Council said “We are committed to ensuring people enjoy their local environment, free from the nuisance and health risks often caused by dog fouling” The issue of dog fouling and irresponsible dog ownership is one that concerns many residents of Torpoint. This fine sends a clear message to the minority of irresponsible dog owners that if you don’t clear up after your dog, the courts will fine you accordingly. Mayor’s Diary: October 23: RBL Poppy Appeal Launch Concert at St James Church. A great and poignant evening. Well done to all who took part. Rachel Tanner who has been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to British interests in Kabul and to charity work. Torpoint Nursery and Infant Head Teacher Lis Carney-Haworth and her husband Sgt David Carney-Haworth. Lis was given the Chief Constable’s Award for Good Citizenship. Her citation stated that for her ‘vision, commitment in the face of complexity and challenge, dedication and hard work to safeguard children, Liz was awarded the good citizenship award.’ Following the ceremony, Lis said: “I’m thrilled for Operation Encompass that Devon and Cornwall Police have recognised what a hugely important initiative it is in supporting the silent victims of domestic abuse – the children.” David received the Chief Constable’s Commendation. His citation noted how he had gone ‘above and beyond’ his duty after identifying that ‘children were being left at risk due to deficiencies in data sharing between the police and schools’. The citation stated that ‘co-ordinated the development of a comprehensive training package and worked in partnership with schools in Plymouth and Torpoint to build a network of over 93 trained and motivated key adults, each school to receive appropriate information and provide support for the children. For your vision, dedication, ingenuity and hard work to safeguarding children.’ PCSO Andy Halls has been informed that he has been successful in his application to become a police constable. He will start in his new role in January but will continue his hard work around Torpoint until then. Thank you Andy for all you have done for us and we wish you well. I would like to welcome PC Marian Sutton to Torpoint’s policing team. On behalf of Val, myself and members of the Town Council we wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

How to beat the telephone fraudsters Operation Fardel is the Devon and Cornwall Police response to telephone fraud, which predominantly targets elderly and vulnerable individuals but anybody can be targeted. If you have received a call from a fraudster that has attempted to deceive you or has indeed succeeded in deceiving you please call the police via 101 or Crimestoppers.. How the fraud works: The potential victim gets a phone call. The fraudster pretends to be a police officer saying they are investigating a fraud on their bank account and have made an arrest) or they might claim to be from the victim’s bank and say they are investigating fraud relating to the account. What happens: The fraudster asks for account details. What to do about it: Do not give it The fraudster asks for PIN details and other security information. Do not give it What happens: The fraudster may ask for the PIN to be keyed into the phone using the keypad. What to do about it: Do not do it –available technology will record it for the fraudster to use later. If you get suspicious – the fraudster will realise and suggest you hang up and call the police or even your own bank to confirm identity and that they are legitimate. Do not do this using the same phone. The fraudster doesn’t hang up so all that happens is that you, the potential victim, are re-connected to the same phone and the fraudsters are ready with appropriate responses to continue the fraud. It could even be the same person or another fraudster. They may ask that large amounts of cash are withdrawn from the victims account (bank or building society) Do not do this. If such a request is made they will explain that the money is required for forensic examination. The victim will be instructed not to tell the bank why they are withdrawing the money, giving

the reason that the bank might be involved in the fraud. This is not true. They will instruct the victim to put the bank cards and/or money into an envelope and give them to a courier or taxi Do not do this. The taxi (courier) will have been sent by the fraudster to collect the items and deliver to them. Bank cards are collected for later use by the offenders to withdraw money using the PIN provided by the victim. Action to take if you get a call: • Be suspicious. End the call. • NEVER give your PIN, security or bank details to anyone over the phone. Remember: • WAIT at least five minutes before attempting to make another call to ensure you’re not reconnected to the offender. • Use a different phone e.g. a mobile phone or a neighbour’s phone. If that is not possible then phone a known friend that you will recognise to test the phone to confirm you aren’t still unwittingly connected to the offender. • NEVER give your bank account details or PIN number over the phone. • NEVER withdraw money and send it to anyone via a courier, taxi or by any other means. • NEITHER the police nor your bank will EVER ask for this information. How can you help stop this devastating crime? Pass it on - share this information with your relatives and friends (older generation are more vulnerable and are targeted possibly due to the belief they have more available funds). Report any calls you believe are suspicious (the non-emergency number is 101). It may be possible to trace where the calls are originating from and build the intelligence picture to apprehend and prosecute offenders. Don’t forget - wait at least five minutes before calling police or use a different phone e.g. a mobile or neighbour’s phone.

Commodore Steve Creek with Steve Wassell, PYA winner of series 1 and 2 and the Regatta

On a well attended evening, Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club held its annual yacht prizegiving in the clubhouse in November to celebrate the winners and to catch up with old friends now that the cut and thrust of racing is done for another year. The Sailing Secretary, Yachts, Dee Casey-Brown was master of ceremonies. The series one trophies were presented by its sponsor, Ron Gibb, with the winner of PYA - Steve Wassell in Dog’s Jorrocks – taking the Harry Cann Perpetual Trophy for the eleventh time. New sponsor Richard Bevan of Peninsula Plumbing presented the trophies for series two. The regatta trophies, the Gnat Cup dating back to 1930 for PYA and the Carew Pole Challenge Cup presented to the Club in 1948 for PYB, were won by Steve Wassell (Dog’s Jorrocks) and George Furness in Cloud Nine respectively. The Shimell family took home a full-house of prizes with Bill Shimell (Wiz) winning both series one and series two in PYC, Olga Shimell taking the ladies’ helm prize, also in PYC, and children Katie and Will winning the PYB and PYC Youth Helms respectively. Club Commodore Steve Creek presented the Youth Helm awards. As well as all the race and series winners, there were some special presentations. Former ViceCommodore Nigel Bunker explained why Chris Thomas deserved the Cruising Plate for his masterful shepherding of the club fleet and our French visitors on the annual summer cruise on a challenging arrival in Falmouth. The plate was presented to Chris by last year’s winner Tony Brown. The final presentation of the evening was to the unfortunately absent Brian Hobbs (Lady Jane) who won the Woodman Bowl for the Most Improved Yachtsman, having come second in both series 1 and series 2 this year. WILCOVE

At a time of the year when we are busy with preparations for the coming festive season and New Year it is good to take time out for a little reflection and entertainment. On a damp, dark November evening Diana Lawer who is a social historian and secretary of the Plymouth Postcard Collectors Club (www.ppcc.org.uk) took the ladies of the Wilcove WI on an amusing and nostalgic journey into the past during her presentation entitled ‘Washday Blues’. Now you may think this subject to be a little dry (excuse the pun) but far from it. Aided by postcard images from World War I through to the 1960s Diana illustrated the weekly routines of bathing on a Friday evening in tin bath in front of the parlour fire through to washing the clothes on a ‘Monday morn’ in the back yard using a ‘dolly tub’ and mangle. Evidently the familiar saying of ‘don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater’ refers to our social practice of the cleanest members of the family washing in the water of a shared bath tub first leaving the dirtiest members to wash last in the increasingly grimy water. At a time in history when our communication relies mainly on information technology and the bulk of mail that drops on our doormats is of the junk variety it is interesting to consider that between 1900 and 1918 termed as ‘the golden age of

picture postcards’ we sent some 800 million postcards a year to each other. As a result we are left with the legacy of iconic postcard images which Diana and her group collect, catalogue and archive ensuring that future generations have a visual record of our past lives. Our sincere thanks to Diana for sharing with us such wonderful images in such a light hearted way and to those innovators who have liberated us from domestic toil with the introduction of domestic labour saving devices such as the automatic washing machine. In December the members of Wilcove WI will gather together at the Blue Plate Restuarant in Downderry to enjoy a little Christmas cheer and then reconvene on the evening of Tuesday January 20 to hear our speaker Brian Jones talk about Torpoint past and present. As we sign off for 2014 the ladies of Wilcove WI would like to wish our communities a very Happy Christmas and we look forward to sharing with you in 2015 news of the celebratory events that will mark the centenary year of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes . Wilcove WI meets at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Wilcove Village Hall and welcomes both visitors and new members. There will be no meeting in December.

PENSIONERS’ VOICE The November meeting came soon after the 100th Anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, that it was appropriate our speaker was from the Royal British Legion. John Tivnan reminded us how bleak was life in 1918, not only for the returning servicemen but even more for the widows. There was no welfare system to help, so if there was no money for rent the women were thrown out of their homes and placed in workhouses and the children placed in ‘charity homes’. Even more tragedy followed as the flu epidemic killed more than two million people, mostly undernourished peoples, but more, in fact, than had been lost in the war. But just one man decided to do something to alleviate the situation. His name was Tom Lister, an ex-lance-bombadier from Lancaster. He begged for funds for soup kitchens, for the use of drill halls to enable the homeless to sleep dry at night, and even went round breweries and pubs to ask for beer at half price, for it was found that the minds of the many ex-servicemen suffering from ‘shellshock’ were helped by meeting others similarly affected and relaxing and talking about it over a glass of beer. Nowadays this condition is recognized as Post Traumatic Stress. Lister next sought out owners of derelict property, and offered to restore these if ex-servicemen could occupy them rent-free for the next 10 years. Unemployed tradesmen were then given work and the houses made habitable, many offered to war widows at rent sixpence a week, enabling them to re-claim their children. Lister also approached clothing manufacturers and was able to provide (on loan only) a smart suit for any ex-serviceman who needed to look smart when applying for a job, for many of them possessed only their uniform, sadly worn and tattered. Such help was copied by other communities throughout the British Isles, and it was Earl Haig with Churchill who suggested the units amalgamated and the British Legion (the Royal

Maker with Rame came a bit later) was formed. During its first year, 1921, the sum of £106,000 (equivalent to over £1 million today) was raised and in remembering the flowers in Flanders Fields the emblem of the poppy was born. Haig suggested that factories, run by war disabled veterans, should be set up to manufacture the poppies. And these we buy, each November, to think of those who have given their lives for this country. These have been all too many, as only one year, 1968, saw no death of service personnel recorded. Mr.Tivnan finished his talk by mentioning that when he accepted the Presidency of the Cornish Branch of the Legion, some nine years ago, the annual collection totalled £8,000 and this year had risen to £22,000. After answering several questions the speaker was sincerely thanked by the Chairman. Earlier, after the usual hymn and prayer, Mr Michael had thanked everyone for the success of the soup and roll lunch which had raised £216. The fish and chips supper at the Birthday Party went extremely well, with special thanks to Pam Michael for the dessert. Names must be given in now for members wishing to attend the Christmas Dinner on December 4, this year at the Halfway Hotel. Transport can be provided. On December 13 it will be Eyes Down for Christmas Bingo at 3pm with special prizes. If enough people are interested there will be a trip to the Theatre Royal Pantomime in early January, names please to MrsMichael. After the raffle was drawn and tea and biscuits served, the meeting closed at 4pm. The next to be held in this hall will be our Christmas Tea and Carols accompanied by Miss Pauline Turpitt, on December 11 at 2.30 pm. Anyone over the age of 50 will be made most welcome.
