First winner of the Richard Feast Award

Science prize for talented student Lucy Torpoint Community College has recently awarded a special science prize to Lucy Haggerty. Lucy was the first-ever recipient of the ‘Richard Feast Award for Outstanding Contribution to Science’. The prize was set up in memory of much loved science teacher, Richard Feast who died last year. He was famous for saying that if you cut him in half it would say ‘scientist’ all the way through. It was decided that the prize would be awarded annually to the student in the college whose love and passion for science matched his. The Science Department chose Lucy as the first recipient because since Year 7 she has been a firmly dedicated scientist. Lucy is currently preparing for an interview at Oxford University where she hopes to pursue chemistry, although she is also interested in medicinal chemistry at a number of other prestigious institutions. She will be following in the footsteps of her sister Emily, who is an Imperial College graduate currently working for Cancer Research. Lucy is a thoroughly deserving recipient of this award. She is a highly dedicated student with a passion for science and a natural curiosity and interest. The prize was awarded by the chair of Governors, Colin Parton, who commented that in all the history of Nobel Prizes awarded for chemistry there have been only four who are female. We are all looking forward to Lucy making this five! Congratulations Lucy, Mr Feast would have approved. Lucy Haggerty

The Trot - before and after The transformation of ‘The Trot’ is now complete. The building work is finished and the building has been converted from a pub into offices and physiotherapy treatment rooms. Many people knew the pub and have wanted a peek inside so here are before and after pictures to show how much it has changed. The pictures show what the pub looked like in early December 2015 when the building work was finished but before the carpet and furniture had gone in and opened up for business which at the time of publication was scheduled to be December 14. Hopefully by the time you read this in the

New Year the businesses will be fully up and running provided all the computers and last minute details go to plan and Richard Harris Solicitors and his wife’s business Torpoint Physio Sarah Harris look forward to starting the New Year in their new building on the high street. The conversion is just the latest chapter of the building as times change over the years. Richard Harris received a superb response to his request for any information about ‘The Trot’ in the previous month’s Torpoint Advertiser from many kind individuals and the Torpoint Archive. The Leader of Cornwall Council been named as one of the most influential people in local government. John Pollard is placed 24th in the Local Government Chronicle’s LGC 100 list for 2016. The list, which includes national and regional politicians, government ministers, civil servants and think tank representatives, looks ahead to who the panel of judges believe will exercise most influence in 2016. Judges are instructed to consider who will have the greatest influence, rather than who they would like to see holding power. Candidates are assessed on the strength of their leadership, the breadth and depth of their influence, and the extent to which there is evidence their work is leading to change elsewhere. John Pollard is the only person from a southern council to make the top 25 on the list, with the judges highlighting his role in successfully negotiating the country’s first non-metropolitan devolution deal for Cornwall.

Mr Pollard, the Independent Member for Hayle North, joined the newly created Cornwall Council in 2009. He was elected as the Vice Chair of Cornwall Council’s Children, Education and Families Overview and Scrutiny Committee in the new Council, becoming Chair of the committee in 2011. He was appointed to the Cabinet as the portfolio holder for localism and devolution in November 2012 Mr Pollard, who become leader of the council in 2013, said: “I regard this as a wonderful accolade for Cornwall. I am immensely proud to be the Leader of the Council and privileged to be supported by a team of remarkable and dedicated officers. “The successful conclusion of the Deal and our further involvement in the development of the devolution agenda, both nationally and here in Cornwall, is a tribute to all who worked so hard to make the Case for Cornwall and the Cornwall Deal a reality.“

Where has 2015 gone? It has certainly been a very busy year! Diary Dates: November 21: Torpoint’s Neighbourhood Plan at the Council Chambers. Three sessions were held for residents to come along and hear and see the proposed plans for the future of the town. It is your town so your ideas are very much appreciated. The next step in the process is to look at people’s responses to the proposal and see what modifications we need to make. We encourage you to please share your views with the Neighbourhood Plan group. www.torpointplan.org.uk or www.torpointtowncouncil.gov.uk November 21: Musical Concert at Cornerstone Church with the Torpoint Silver Band, The Torpoint Lady Singers

International baritone and actor is guest speaker William Shimell, the well-known international baritone singer, was guest speaker at the November meeting or Torpoint WI. William talked about his career in opera which has spanned 35 years and where he has performed on the world stage including Le Scala in Milan. William interspersed his talk with several musical excerpts which made it so much more entertaining. Recently William has begun a second career as a successful actor, appearing in three films including ‘Certified Copy’ with Juliet Binoche. William has also recorded a CD entitled ‘I’ll Walk Beside You’ which is raising funds for St Luke’s Hospice and local churches in and around Torpoint. Members all enjoyed William’s amusing and very interesting talk on his career to date. As November was birthday month, Sylvia White had kindly baked a delicious chocolate cake and an apple cake for members to enjoy with their tea. Help from members was requested to decorate the WI Christmas Tree in St James Church as part of the Christmas Tree Festival. Members have been busy

William Shimell producing 100 stars for the 100 years of the WI. Many of the stars were made at the successful WI craft group held on Tuesday afternoons in St James Church Hall. Lorraine England gave a demonstration recently on needle felting and kindly helped more than 20 ladies to produce some wonderful, colourful robins. This month six ladies joined a coach at Trerulefoot for the Cornwall Federation’s biannual visit to Denman College in Oxfordshire. They then joined a larger coach waiting at Launceston which was taking

almost 50 ladies from all over Cornwall for a four-day stay at the college. The courses available this time were willow making for Christmas, enamelling, Christmas crafts, French cookery, aptly named ‘Tour De France’ and gospel singing. As usual the stay at Denman was a happy one with good food, lovely company and excellent tuition. The final evening was especially memorable as the gospel singing group gave an impromptu concert. On the return journey the coach was laden with all the crafts and cooking which had been done – there wasn’t a spare seat to be found and all the ladies seemed happy with their few days away. Sandra Nicholson thanked Sue Hale, on behalf of everyone who enjoyed our birthday dinner at the Eliot Hotel in Liskeard, for organising the evening. Final arrangements were made for the Christmas party and for the visit to Cotehele to see the Garland. Competition Results: ‘Letter J’ 1st Jean Morgan, 2nd Sylvia Fraser, 3rd Sue Hale, and Flower of the Month 1st Jacqui Rust, 2nd Enid Gaved and equal 3rd Jean Morgan and Betty Tarrant. The next meeting entitled Willow Arts will be held on January 27 in St James Church Hall at 7.30 pm and visitors are always welcome.

Dozens of Year 12 Torpoint Community College Sixth Form students and ex students enjoyed a fantastic cooked breakfast to celebrate their superb GCSE results and also collect their Exam Certificates. The atmosphere was lively and celebratory and a good time was had by all.

On the Beat News from the Neighbourhood Policing Team with Sergeant Angela Crow, Neighbourhood Team Leader As you may have seen on the news last week, the chancellor outlined the next stages of the comprehensive spending review in his autumn statement. His comment about police budgets was unexpected. You may also have seen our Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer giving his response: “This appears, at first hearing, more positive than any previous indication from the government. We await the detail of the settlement as it affects this force.” As always, your local policing team will continue to focus on delivering the best service we can to our local communities and I will keep you updated with any important changes. I hope you have a safe and happy festive season - my next bulletin will be in the February edition. Medical assistant Craig Wilton (left) and leading regulator Nathan Blight packing up the donations ready to deliver to the charity Blankets, hats and other items of warm clothing have been collected together at HMS Raleigh for distribution to people living on the streets of Plymouth. The Royal Navy training base in Torpoint answered a plea for donations from Hope Baptist Church in Peverell. The church runs the Plymouth City Soup Run on Monday evenings, providing hot food to homeless people, signposting their clients to other services in the city. Leading regulator Nathan Blight, who hails from Plymouth, organised the collection. He said: “We try our best to support good causes here at HMS Raleigh and when the church contacted us

we were keen to help. We put out an appeal for warm clothes, blankets and sleeping bags and were pleased that so many staff members came forward with donations.” Hope Baptist Church is a registered charity. Team coordinator for the Plymouth City Soup Run, Madeline Maddison said: “All donations of warm clothes, sleeping bags especially at this time of year are always gratefully received. “Thank you to everyone who donated. We can serve between 60 to 100 people any Monday night and offer a listening ear, while signposting to other organisations that can offer

support such as Shekinah Mission and Plymouth Access to Housing, known as PATH. “We are also in the process of putting together survival boxes, which we are hoping to pass on to service users as they move into tenancy, so will gladly accept, shower gel, toothbrushes, shampoo and socks. Please keep collecting as we know that the service users need all the help that we can provide.” If anyone would like to get involved in the Plymouth City Soup Run either on a Sunday or Monday night they should contact Madeline on the following email address: madeline.maddison@ btinternet.com

Members of the Green watch present Di Stevens with a cheque for £449 towards Shelterbox

Scouts raise nearly £450 for Shelterbox Green Watch Torpoint Sea Scouts held a presentation evening in the Torpoint Council Chambers to present Di Stevens, Torpoint’s representative for Shelterbox, with a cheque for £449 which the scouts raised by organising a sale in the Council Chambers earlier in the month. On the evening Torpoint Mayor Mike Pearn present Joshua Foster with his Chief Scout’s Gold Award – the highest award a scout can achieve. Members of Torpoint Retained Fire Brigade came along to present some of the scouts with their Fire Safety Badges and Roger Cook from the local St John Ambulance presented Connor Deighton with his Stage 5 Emergency Aid. If any youngsters are interested in joining the scouts there are still some spaces in both troups if any one is interested.
