Torpoint football fan joins ‘Abide With Me’ choir

Mike’s dream Wembley day

Lifelong Leeds United supporter Mike Adams from Torpoint had ‘the experience of a lifetime’ when he joined the FA Cup Fans Choir on the hallowed turf at Wembley. Mike was one of 64 fans who formed the choir and fulfilled their dreams by singing ‘Abide With Me’ before the FA Cup Final on May 30. Each fan represented the clubs which reached the third round of the FA Cup this year He was one of the winners of a competition run jointly by Songs of Praise and BBC Sport in which fans shared their most memorable FA Cup Final experience. Over 1,300 people applied to take part in the unique experience to sing ‘Abide with Me’, which has become a constant fixture since it

was first sung at the final in 1927. The choir, led by opera singer Alfie Boe, were joined in singing by 90,000 fans and watched by 500 million TV viewers all over the world. Mike, who works for Babcock at Devonport Dockyard, said: “It was an experience which will live with me forever. Words can’t describe what it was like standing on the pitch in front of 90,000 fans and knowing that we were being watched by hundreds of millions more. “The fans gave us a fantastic reception after singing Abide With Me - and then we were able to enjoy what was a brilliant Cup Final.” Mike, 55, and the other members of the choir arrived at Wembley

the day before the final and got straight down to rehearsals led by conductor Steve Thompson. “Having left our coats and bags in what is normally the England dressing room, we were led to the media suite, which is like a small theatre, and I was thrilled to see my Leeds United shirt on the front row. “It meant I was stood on the front row of the choir the following day when we sang Abide With Me. I was just behind Alfie Boe, and as a result I was seen in a lot of the live TV coverage.” The choir were given a peptalk before the event by England manager Roy Hodgson. “He

Mike’s memorable day at Wembley • continued from front page simply told us to enjoy every minute. It was an inspirational speech,” said Mike. Mike’s memorable FA Cup Final memory which won him a place in the choir related to an incident when he was a young boy in the choir at Millbrook. Mike’s entry read: “As a young 12 year old I used to sing in the local village church choir, mostly on Sundays but also the occasional Saturday and for these we got paid the equivalent of about 50p. On the 6th May 1972 my beloved Leeds United were in the Centenary Cup Final against Arsenal... both starting at 3pm. “My mum who was always helping at the church insisted I could not let the vicar down, so I had to go to the church for the wedding. I can still remember jumping on my push bike as

soon as the bride and groom had walked down the aisle and bombing around in front of the church, weaving in between all the guests to make my way home, just in time to see Mick Jones cross the ball to Alan Clarke to score and for Leeds to win 1-0. “My mum must have told the vicar I was a big Leeds Fan and somehow he knew somebody who had gone to the match. The next morning at the Sunday Service he gave me a Cup Final programme which I still have more than 40 years on. “Then I missed the start of the Cup Final as I had to sing in a choir, to now where I would love to be involved in the Fans Choir and see it all for real.” Mike said: “It was a great weekend and we not only appeared live on BBC TV during the build up to the Cup Final but also featured in a special edition

of Songs of Praise on Sunday May 31.” During his memorable trip to Wembley Mike had the chance to meet Songs of Praise front man Aled Jones, singer Alfie Boe and a number of BBC Match of the Day presenters. Mike has just heard that the FA Cup Fans Choir have now been invited to be part of the

Mike Adams in the front row of the choir big Christmas lights switch-on in Southampton in December. “The whole choir project seems to have caught the imagination of many people and we understand that there are other potential developments in the pipeline,” added Mike.

Large crowds gathered in Kingsand on May 23 for the official re-opening of the village Institute. The landmark building underwent extensive restoration following the near catastrophic damage it sustained during the storms of February last year. The ceremonial cutting of the ribbon was performed by Kingsand’s most senior resident, Mrs Dorothy Jago, who was assisted by local MP Sheryll Murray and witnessed by a large crowd of well-wishers. Inside the building was a large selection of old photographs, one of which was Mrs Jago’s Garret Street School class photograph of 1925. A copy was presented to her by the ‘young men’ of the Village Family Tree, all of whom had relatives who were featured in the picture and included Margaret Jago who was to become, in turn, Mrs Jago’s sister-in-law and then Ray Hancock’s mother. On the first floor, there was standing room only and as the weather was glorious full use could be made of the balcony. Mrs Jago joined fellow special guests, senior residents, Mrs Verran, Mr Duke, Mrs

Galloway, Mrs Down and Mrs Rowe to be welcomed by chairman of trustees, Clive Davies. Clive paid tribute to all those who had worked so hard to make the day possible. They included the John Grimes Partnership, Celtic Construction and Cornwall Council who, with funds donated from central government enabled the sea wall to be reinforced. The role played by the insurers, was also vital to the reconstruction. Last but by no means least was Bob Gaskin who has given so much to the Institute over the years and is now the Life President. Refreshments were provided which included a large cake made by Laura Hoskin featuring the new Institute logo designed by Dave Peach. The refreshments were distributed by young helpers, Molly McHugh with Meg and Beth Farrow. Those assembled were serenaded by the Halfway Harmony from the outside steps which had been beautifully decorated by Sarah McLees Taylor and pictures by Fourlanesend pupils. The pouring of much wine was overseen by Sarah’s husband Dylan, ably supported by the young girls. The whole event was an enormous success with all sections of the community combining to celebrate the restoration of the iconic and much loved building. Work yet to be completed includes reinforcing the door and floor of the lower balcony and renewing the support structure of the first

floor entrance. For information about the Institute please see the website www.makerwithrameinstitute.co.uk which has been put together by John Shepherd, where you may find details of the ‘Friends of the Institute’ membership and also the snooker club which is fully operational once again. The building with its facilities and wonderful views is available to book for all events such as private parties, weddings receptions and all social gatherings. Details are available on the website or from Dawn Western on 01752 822969 The Great Rame Bake Off will take place on Bank Holiday Monday August 31. This will again include a garden produce section.

The only remaining Flying 30 yacht is going back into service this summer, following a three year restoration programme by Cremyll Keelboats. The Huff of Arklow was designed by Uffa Fox and built in 1951 in Arklow, County Wicklow in Ireland. The restoration which began in August 2012 has brought her back into her original condition, after many years of being underused and improperly maintained. One of the ground breaking yachts of her generation, Huff was one of eight Flying 30s designed by Uffa Fox, but the only one ever to be built. She was the first offshore yacht to feature a fin and skeg, the first ever masthead rig sloop and she was the first ocean going yacht designed to plane. Originally built for ex-RAF pilot Douglas Heard, Huff was a scaled up version of his successful Flying Fifteen, with space to sleep a crew of six. Following an arson attack in the 70s, it was said that she would never sail again but a new owner bought her for £500 and restored her for use as a charter yacht. Bought by Eyemouth International Sailing Craft Association in recent years, the restoration began in the winter of 2012 at Mashfords Boatyard in Cremyll with the help of a £40,000 Heritage Lottery Fund Grant. Now fit to sail once again, Huff of Arklow was presented with the Regional Flagship of the Year Pennant by National Historic Ships’ Director Martyn Heighton for her extensive programme of events and regattas in Ireland and the South West this year. Cremyll Keelboats will offer a unique and exhilarating experience on board the fast cruiser this summer taking her everywhere from Plymouth to the Scilly Isles, across the Channel to France, down the Cornish coast and across the Irish Sea. Alongside the talented team led by Dominic Bridgman at Mashfords Boatyard in Cremyll, three apprentices from Falmouth Marine School have been working on the restoration project to gain the necessary practical experience for their NVQ 2&3 in boat building. Barbara Bridgman from Cremyll Keelboats said: “There was a lot of work to do to bring Huff back to as close as possible to her original condition, in respect

of the MCA (Maritime Coastguard Agency) code of practice. “Her hull has been completely refastened with 8,000 copper nails and groves, a new mast step has replaced the old one whilst new metal floors and knees have given the boat back her original hull strength. She has a whole new fresh and light interior. She’s regained her original waterline length, by fitting a new hydraulic system we were able to move the engine to the saloon to balance her trim and her performance and manoeuvrability has been enhanced.” “Her cruising speed will now reach eight knots – not quite up to the 20 she has been recorded doing decades ago, but fast enough to make it an exhilarating experience for anyone who joins one of Huff’s sailing trips this summer. We’ve planned something for everyone, with cruising all around the UK, wildlife trips, appearances at regattas and RYA training, so more people will get to enjoy this fantastic yacht.” Huff of Arklow’s first sailing of 2015 departed from Plymouth on June 22, for an eight day trip to Belfast. For overnight sailing trips she can sleep five, and for day sailing can take seven passengers. The full list of sailings can be viewed on the website www.huffofarklow.org

Big drop in number of complaints after appointment of enforcement officer

Torpoint Town Council’s decision to introduce an enforcement officer has resulted in a big drop in the number of complaints over dog fouling. The dog fouling had been highlighted as one of the main issues during the Neighbourhood Plan consultation process. The enforcement officer can issue fixed penalty notices to people who allow their dogs to foul the pavements and public areas and fail to clear it up. Mayor Mike Pearn said: “This illustrates the determination of the council to improve the environment for residents by stamping out this antisocial activity that has major health risks. Although reducing dog fouling is the major area of his work our enforcement officer is also on the lookout for those littering and fly-tipping”. The Cornwall Council dog welfare and enforcement officer praised the town council initiative. “I believe that Torpoint is moving in the right direction in tackling those responsible for allowing their dogs to foul the public highways. We have seen a decline in the amount of dog fouling complaints received from residents of Torpoint. I believe that this is down to the introduction of the enforcement officer. We are also selling a large number of Cornwall Council ‘dog poo’ bags at the Library and One Stop Shop”.

Big turnout for walk

The annual summer walk took place on June 14. Normally known as the Father’s Day Walk, the event had to be re-scheduled because the Lions were busy supporting Armed Forces Day in Torpoint on Father’s Day weekend. Maybe this was a good thing as there was an amazing turnout of Brownies, Cubs, parents and various groups as well as individual walkers all raising money for good causes. By 10am at Maker Church car park everyone had been signed in and sponsor forms completed and after a group picture they set off. Two routes were set: one for the more serious walkers and one for the younger groups. The weather was very kind and walking the beautiful grounds of Mount Edgcumbe was always going to be a pleasure. On completion of the walk, hot dogs and various drinks were available free to all who had taken part. The Lion President thanked all of the walkers for their support and the effort of all the Lion members who marshalled, manned the checking in point and running the BBQ. As usual a big thank you to the St John Ambulance team for making it a very safe event. We hope that this can be repeated every year from now on as everyone seemed to be having fun and raising serious money. Meanwhile, the car boot sale at Windy Ridge has taken a pleasant upturn in number of sellers and buyers, probably due to better weather conditions. There were plenty of bargains to be had and some good money made by people selling. So if you would like to set up a table the cost is only £5 per car which is easily recouped by selling some of your unwanted items, sellers are advised to be set up by at least 8am on Sunday mornings. The Windy Ridge restaurant is open from 8am for teas, coffee and bacon butties with toilets for the use of all car booters. Now on to our Summer Fair which this year will be held at the Torpoint Community College main grounds on July 18 from 11.30 am, with the official opening at noon by Sheryll Murray MP, who is also the Lion President of Westminster Lions. This year should turn out to be an amazing day as we have managed to book more attractions

Sad loss of Lion Mike Cramp It is sad to report the loss of one of our hard working and well respected members, Lion Mike Cramp who has died at the age of 72. Mike was a long standing member of our club as well as being a member of several local choirs. He served a term as Lions Club president proving to be a real leader and with the support of his wife Pat, they made a good team with great organisational skills. Mike moved recently from Freathy to Cullompton to be near his daughter. A coach and private cars full of Lions and choir members travelled to Cullompton for his funeral service. The Rame Male Voice choir sang during the funeral service and also at the wake. Pat and the family were overwhelmed by the amount of support they received which said something about the respect Mike had built up over the years. Rest in peace, Mike. You will always be remembered for your humour and hard work.

Students success in maths competition Colourful ‘twiddlemuffs’ popular with residents

Many of you will be aware that at the Torpoint Nursing Centre we have been collecting wool, buttons and ribbons to make some of our residents ‘twiddlemuffs’ which are colourful, tactile and comforting. We need to thank in particular, Pat Duncan and her friend Ann from Albion Court who have knitted us some great muffs. In their recent project they have just completed five ‘twiddlemuffs’ for the dementia patients at Torcare. They have also knitted for Fish and Chip Babies in Uganda, the Little Harbour Hospice at St Austell, woollen garments for premature babies at Derriford Hospital, jumpers and hats for South African children and knitted blankets for the Third World amongst other charity work. This charity knitting has been going on for five years.

Thanks also to the WI for their contributions. We now have plenty of variety and colour for the residents to choose from. We are planning a re-run of the 1966 World Cup Football match scheduled for Father’s Day which should bring back some great memories and along with refreshments and a beer is much anticipated. On June 25 we supported the Marie Curie Tea Party. A cake stall was held in the morning and tea and cake in the afternoon. All donations, as always, are much appreciated. We will let you know how much we raise in the next Advertiser. In Torpoint, Pat and friends hold a table top sale at Christmas to raise money to purchase further wool requirements so that the charity knitting can continue.

Latest from the Mayor’s Parlour Armed Forces Day is a great success and a credit to all involved...

It gave me great pleasure to welcome everyone to Torpoint to celebrate Cornwall’s Armed Forces Day on June 20. It was a great honour for our small town to be selected to host this important event. The day provided us with an opportunity to say thank you to the armed forces. We thank them for all that they have done for us in the past, what they are doing at present and what they will do in the future. It was wonderful to see the veterans, standard bearers, cadets, members of HMS Heroes, HMS Raleigh trainees, and the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth on parade. The service of the men and women of our armed forces is vital to the security of our nation and our freedom. Whether serving in the air, on land or sea, whether serving home or overseas, and whether on active duty, their sacrifice and unflinching willingness to put service before their self is truly extraordinary. Cornwall salutes them all. Following the parade a Community Covenant was signed by Captain Bellfield, myself and the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall. HMS Raleigh trainees then treated us to an impressive display presenting arms and this was followed by Beat the Retreat and a display from the Band of HM Royal Marine Band, a fantastic display it was! A huge thank you to Andy Martin Production Support and his crew for setting up the stage and sound system for the whole event. As always Andy and his team did an excellent job! A thank you to St John Ambulance Brigade (Torpoint) who were in attendance and at hand as always. Thanks to the Torpoint & Rame Peninsula Lions Club for their help. Thank you to Sylvia and her staff for a great buffet lunch served in the superb surroundings of the Torpoint Bowling Club. Thank you to Ritchie the Raleigh Buffer and his staff and Ian Braad our caretaker for all the lifting and shifting and last, but not least a big thank you to the Armed Forces Committee who have been planning this event for a very long time. The success of the day rewarded them for all their hard work, and a huge thank you to all our sponsors. We also had two shire horses from the Lizard Stallions Carriage Company with us for the day pulling a carriage up and down the foreshore giving rides. They are already booked for the Carnival on September 12. Another date for your diary is the Torpoint Town Council’s Civic Parade on July 26. The parade will leave the Council Chambers at 10.30am for the service at St James Church at 11am. All organisations and residents invited. Congratulations to Captain Trevor Gully on being awarded the OBE, Trevor was educated in all three schools in Torpoint and is now the Commanding Officer of HMS Sultan. Mayors Diary May 22 – Plymouth Lord Mayor Choosing at the Plymouth Guildhall – Councillor Dr John Mahony. May 23 - St Columba and Torpoint Rugby Club Dinner and presentations. Congratulations to all the award winners. May 24 – Plymouth Civic Service, St Andrew’s Church. May 26 – Callington Portreeve and Mayor Making Councillor Andrew Long. Congratulations to Captain Trevor Gully on being awarded the OBE, Trevor was educated in all three schools in Torpoint and is now the Commanding Officer of HMS Sultan. Congratulations to the RNLI Lifeguards who spotted two surfers getting into difficulty at Sharrow Point, Whitsand Bay. The Lifeguards are patrolling Sharrow and Tregonhawke beaches daily from 10am to 6pm until the end of September, and Tregantle currently has lifeguard cover from 10am to 6pm every weekend until the peak season begins in July. Enjoy yourselves on the lovely beaches but take care and heed the lifeguards warnings. Emma Walton who was born prematurely and diagnosed with cerebral palsy at just 18 months old. Emma’s parents, who own the Topshop Fish and Chips, had to take out a personal loan and rely on funds raised through their fish and chip shop to reach the target for Emma to have an operation. The cost of the private operation had increased by £13,000 to £37,000, Emma’s operation is set for July 4 at Spire Bristol Hospital and I wish Emma well. Your help is needed. Last year, there were more than 1300 new safeguarding adult referrals in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Of these referrals, 280 related to people with learning disabilities, 120 related to people with mental health issues and 350 were for people over 85 years old. This includes allegations of physical abuse emotional abuse, neglect, financial abuse and sexual abuse. Everyone has the right to live their lives free from violence, fear and abuse. Agencies in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are working hard to prevent vulnerable adults from being abused and neglected and we need the public to join with Cornwall Council to help achieve their aim. The aim of this campaign is to raise awareness of these issues among members of the public. We need people to look out for their relatives, friends and neighbours and report anything which give them cause for concern. As well as focusing on the issues of hoarding and self neglect, members of the Safeguarding Adults Board will also be reinforcing the successful ‘If you see something, do something’ campaign with posters at council buildings, hospitals, GP surgeries, libraries and one stop shops, schools and police stations. There will also be an opportunity to watch the ‘say no to abuse’ DVD on the council’s website www.cornwall.gov.uk/safeguardingadults and the websites of health partners. Members of the Public concerned about an adult should call Social Services on 0300 1234 131. Torpoint Youth Club opens on Thursday evenings 5pm-7pm for younger sessions ages 11-13 years and 7pm-9pm for young people 13 years and over at the Torpoint Children’s Centre, Trevol Road. Helpers and youth leaders required. Come and join us. The Tennis Courts at Thanckes Park is open daily for use of everyone. Please respect them or they will have to be closed again. A Dementia Friendly Community Group is being formed for the Torpoint, Rame and surrounding Villages. If you need help or can help in any way, please telephone Pam Madge on 01752 822014. You can also get help from Cornwall’s telephone befriending service for people with dementia and their carers. If your life is affected by dementia and you sometimes feel lonely or isolated please telephone 01872 277963 or email cornwall@ alzheimers.org.uk for support. Concert in the Park The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth have offered the chance for young people to work with these internationally renowned professional musicians. There will be a variety of ensembles culminating in a free concert to which the public are welcome. The young people will have an opportunity to spend a week rehearsing and performing with the Band between July 27 and 31. The concert to which the public are welcome is in Benodet Park, Thanckes Park, Torpoint at 7pm on July 30. Please bring your own seating blankets and refreshments.

Thousands attend Armed Forces Day

gathered for the parade. Here they are being inspected by Colonel Bolitho, the Lord Mike Pearn, Mayor of Torpoint

Thousands of people flocked to Torpoint on Saturday June 20 to show their support for members of the Armed Forces, past, present and future, as the town hosted Cornwall’s salute to the military. The event, held on the banks of the River Tamar at Thanckes Park, started with a veterans’ parade led by the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth and a guard of honour provided by HMS Raleigh. The parade included 96-year-old Donald Eyles, a Burma Star veteran, who hails from the town. For the packed day of family entertainment Thanckes Park was split into three zones – a military zone, a historical zone and an entertainment zone with an arena and stage. The Hydrographic Survey Ship, HMS Scott, formed a back-drop to the day moored across the river from the park, at Devonport Naval Base. All three elements of the Armed Forces were represented in the military zone together with a number of charities that support the Services and veterans’ groups. Children were able to climb on board a range of equipment used by the Royal Marines, including a Jackal armoured vehicle and an offshore raiding craft. They were also able to try their hand at fire-fighting with the staff from HMS Raleigh’s Maritime Survival School and take a turn in a RAF Glider. The Army was represented by 6 Rifles D Company, 232 (Cornwall) Port Squadron Royal Logistics Corp and 243 (The Wessex) Field Hospital. In the historical zone, Hidden Heritage, the Golden Arrow Living History Group and the Duke of Cornwall World War 1 Living History Group, were on hand to give a portrayal of the role Cornwall has played in past conflicts. The zone also included the Torpoint Archives, Friends of Thanckes Park and the HMS Heroes children’s group. Highlights on the stage and in the arena include a one-off performance by a 100-strong choir of children from local schools who sang songs across the generations from war-time favourites to specially

written pieces for the day. The Carbeile School Field Gun crew were in action in the arena and there were also performances from local bands and groups. At 5.30 pm the action moved to the stage for the evening programme kicked off by local singer Jack Cookson, who was followed by Gav and the Grim-notes, the Dulcet Tones and finally jump-jive band Company B. The day ended with a spectacular fireworks display. Councillor Mike Pearn, Mayor of Torpoint, said: “It was a fantastic turn-out and we estimated that around 5,000 visited the event at various intervals throughout the day. Our aim was to put on something for everyone to show our support for the men and women of our Armed Forces today, those who have served so gallantly in the past and for the next generation coming through. “Torpoint has a proud tradition of being an Armed Forces town so we were particularly honoured to have been chosen to host Cornwall’s event. Thanckes Park is an ideal venue for this type of celebration. The atmosphere throughout the day was incredible and the feedback we have received has been very positive. Thanks must go to all those who came and the numerous organisations that got behind us to make it happen.” Babcock were the main sponsors of the event. The day was also funded by a grant from the Ministry of Defence and a donation from Torpoint Town Council. Other organisations gave their time and services free of charge or at a reduced rate. Armed Forces Day is an annual event, held in towns and cities across the UK. Its aim is firstly to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. Secondly, it gives people from across the nation an opportunity to ‘Show Your Support’ for the men and women who make up the armed forces community, from currently serving troops to Service families and from veterans to cadets.

Volunteers needed for the big beach clean up The Marine Conservation Society is looking for volunteers to join them on the beaches! The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) wants to tackle the tide of litter washing up on local beaches and they need public support. The charity urgently needs volunteers to take part in the UK’s biggest beach clean and litter survey, which takes place on the third weekend in September. This year, the charity has the additional support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery to help make the event a bigger success. In 2014, nearly 5,349 volunteers cleaned 301 beaches. For every kilometre surveyed, a record 2,457 pieces of litter were found. MCS beachwatch officer Charlotte Coombes says it’s crucial we do something to tackle rising litter levels: “Over the last decade, we’ve recorded a huge spike in the amount of litter found on our beaches – up by over 20 per cent. We need help and anyone can simply volunteer to take part.”

This year’s MCS Great British Beach Clean takes place from September 18 to 21, and will involve thousands of volunteers taking to the beaches all around the UK coast. They’ll clean up and record the rubbish they find. Clara Govier, head of charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said, “It’s really important for everyone to learn about the dangers of marine litter and I’m delighted that players of People’s Postcode Lottery are supporting the Marine Conservation Society who are tackling this important cause. I would urge anyone who has the time to spare to take part in this beach clean.” Some of our best-loved marine wildlife is under threat from hazardous litter in our seas. Hundreds of species of marine wildlife accidentally eat, or become tangled up in litter - and it’s also hazardous to people. Find out more at www.mcsuk.org/beachwatch or telephone 01989 566017.

Record-breaking Raleigh field gunners celebrate their best ever result HMS Raleigh’s crew achieved their best ever result at this year’s Royal Navy and Royal Marines Field Gun Competition. The crew ran out the winners of the Plate 1 final to collect the Silver Jubilee Cup in a time of 1 min, 22.9 seconds, the fastest time ever run by a Raleigh crew. The annual competition held at HMS Collingwood saw Raleigh compete against 24 other teams from across the Armed Forces. HMS Raleigh’s crew had been training hard for the competition since April under the direction of Warrant Officer 1 Natasha Pulley, who had the honour of being the first female ‘Number One’ trainer to lead a team at the annual event. The 45-year-old experienced field gunner is in charge of HMS Raleigh’s PT department. She has taken part in the competition herself on seven previous occasions. Natasha said: “We set out at the start of the season with the goal to become the best ever crew to represent HMS Raleigh. Not only did we achieve our aim but we surpassed it in more ways than we could imagine. “To run the fastest ever time when it mattered and to beat some of the big guns from the more established field gun fraternity was awesome. I feel so privileged and lucky to work with such a phenomenal group of young men and one woman and cannot imagine achieving what we did with any other crew. The planning is already in progress for next year.” The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Field Gun competition is one of the highlights of the Royal Navy sporting calendar. The origins of the event date back to 1899, when sailors from the cruiser, HMS Terrible, constructed several 4.7 inch field guns from the ship’s guns and transported them by land to relieve the beleaguered British forces at Ladysmith during the Boer War. During the Field Gun competition each team has to run, dismantle, reassemble and fire the gun in the shortest possible time. For the second wheel change, all of the equipment, equivalent in weight to a small car, is lifted off the ground. Each crew completes six runs, running against a maximum of five others in three heats. The six with the fastest aggregate time, after time penalties have been added, compete in the final. The trophy for the winners is an exact replica of a 28 pound gun and seven crew cast in silver. The crew from HMS Heron were the overall winners this year.

There is no specific news about your local policing team this month so I thought I would use this as an opportunity to explain how this bulletin is prepared. I collate all the statistics from different computer systems to give you the breakdown for crimes by area. These figures and crime types can change between the date I compile them and the date you get this bulletin. The main reasons for any differences being that some people do not report crimes at the time they occur, for a number of reasons. Some people report incidents to us and then update us to say that the circumstances have changed – this is most often the case with theft reports as, happily, people discover that no theft has taken place. So, the figures are as accurate as they can be on the date this bulletin is prepared. I also include information from our corporate communications department to see what might be of interest to us locally. Let me know if there is anything else you would like me to consider including in future editions.

Summer drinking

Police are reminding people across the region to keep safe and have a good time but to remain aware how alcohol consumption can increase during the summer months. Devon and Cornwall Police advises both residents and visitors to have fun, but know your limits. Alcohol can dramatically change someone’s behaviour which can often result in them doing something they may not do when sober. We are asking people to think about the consequences of excessive drinking before they begin their night out. Police advice to be safe this summer includes: • Drink responsibly – know when to stop drinking

alcohol and drink water regularly during the evening. • Always walk away from trouble. Stay in control and prevent one night’s actions leaving you with a criminal record for years to come. • Don’t drink and drive - plan how to get home before you go out and pre-book a licensed taxi if you will need one at the end of the evening.

Monthly figures

The Control Room recorded 122 calls from the public in Torpoint and across the Rame Peninsula. A small number of these were duplicate incidents. Some of the varied calls which police attended included 14 domestic incidents, 13 incidents checking the welfare of individuals, six people were reported missing and 21 incidents occurred on the highway. Calls also included 21 incidents of anti-social behaviour reported to us across Torpoint and Rame. The majority of those continue to be neighbour disputes, noise, nuisance individuals and vehicles. These calls also included the 39 crimes recorded as being committed across Torpoint and Rame Peninsula. Torpoint: 21 - 3 assaults (all categories including sexual and domestic incidents), 1 attempted dwelling burglary, 8 thefts (all categories), 6 criminal damages, 1 public order offence, 1 drugs offence and 1 driving offence Deviock: 2 (1 theft & 1 communications offence) Sheviock: 4 (1 criminal damage, 1 theft, 1 assault & 1 animal-related incident) Antony & Wilcove: 3 (1 burglary dwelling, 1 theft & 1 assault) St John/ Freathy: – 0 Millbrook: 9 (4 thefts, 3 assaults, 1 public order offence & 1 driving offence) Maker with Rame: 0

Golden age of steam recalled

Guest speaker Jack Asquith brought a wonderful assortment of railway memorabilia to the June meeting of Maker with Rame Pensioners’ Voice. There were examples of everything from guard’s lamps, nameplates from the steam engines, stations and office doors as well as several colourful reproduction paintings which once enlivened the carriages. He also brought many gadgets, pamphlets and books. The old mighty steam engines held fascination for young lads before the advent of the silent diesels and for many men this interest has lasted into adulthood. He started by mentioning Queen Victoria, who first used the railway in 1854 - and was the coal in the tender really whitewashed so she could look upon the cleanliness? Her Majesty frequently travelled by train culminating in the final conveying of her body from the Isle of Wight to Windsor. The speaker dealt with so many interesting facts and figures. We learned that the Mallard held the world speed record at 126 mph in 1938, and many years later the Eurostar ran at 186mph. However, this was topped by the Japanese magnetic levitation train travelling at an unbelievable 374mph. Having led the world in the invention of railways, it’s sad that no new trains are built in the UK, but are currently imported. However, trains are still being re-built by the dedicated carers who scour scrapyards for their remains. Much hard graft is expended to restore these monsters and also to replace some of the lines axed by Beeching. Mr Asquith recounted several amusing incidents, among them the fact that the Red Carpet is laid for any Royal alighting from the train, which means that the carpet must be aligned with the royal carriage door. Accordingly out comes the tape measure,

guards are deployed to signal the engine driver to stop in the exact spot, and the operation proceeds without calamity. The speaker mentioned the coastal line at Dawlish, particularly relevant to Cornwall remembering the disruption caused by last year’s major storm, and he thinks that ultimately a new route for the railway line must be found further inland. When Mr Asquith attempted to bring his talk to an end, his vociferous audience asked for him to continue, and plied him with questions, they were so interested. Ultimately, however, Mr Michael intervened to thank him, not only for his exceptionally interesting talk, but also for his thoughtfulness in collecting so many souvenirs and doubtless expending much money, to provide a railway heritage for future generations. The meeting had been opened earlier by the chairman, Steve Michael who, after the usual hymn and prayer, had asked for a short silence to remember a well-known member, Mrs Elizabeth Bennett, who died recently. The chairman thanked the committee and all the helpers who had made the coffee morning such a success, raising £296. Details of the spring holiday in March next year are now available from Mrs Pam Michael. Arrangements for the Christmas break will be discussed at the next meeting. Please note that this will be our strawberry and cream tea, with the weather dictating the venue on July 9. If we have a fine afternoon, the chairman and Mrs Michael will be pleased to welcome the members to their garden at Cartref, but if the weather is miserable, we will have to meet as usual in the Community Hall, Kingsand. After tea and biscuits were served and the raffle drawn, the meeting was closed at 4.15pm.

Millbrook Pharmacy Update Advertorial

I knew from the start of 2015, this year would bring us increasing challenges and possible changes - also concerns about the future of the health services on and around the Rame Peninsula, especially here in Millbrook. Six months on…my concerns continue to grow as you read from time to time in the national papers and from our Pharmacy magazines cutbacks needed in the NHS, the closing of smaller pharmacies and surgeries also the battle to get important medication with restricted quota systems. We have noticed that our stock delivery times have been moved to late morning or in the afternoon, ‘the guaranteed delivery by midday’ slot now arrives at 2.00pm.This brings frustration when you see how urgently required this medication is. With Penntor, the new surgery for Rame Group Practice opening in Torpoint what did that mean for the patients of Cawsand Surgery? Many ask even now ‘Will Cawsand Surgery close?’ In April, letters were sent to all patients of Millbrook Surgery and Lodge House, announcing that Dr Scaglioni was leaving. Again many new enquiries asked us what was going to happen. The pharmacy was never officially approached or informed of the plan ahead. One of our staff kindly showed us the letter which indicated that NHS England would put in place a plan to keep the Surgeries operating for the next 12 months until a more permanent plan was agreed. By the time you read this, Access Healthcare Ltd also referred to as ‘The Devon Doctors’ have started their 12 month contract to run both Millbrook Surgery and Lodge House. Two Health Action Days have been completed in Cawsand and Millbrook with another one for Torpoint (Wednesday 22nd July 10.00 am to 1.00 pm, Torpoint Council Chambers) and one for Sheviock (Thursday 30th July 4.00pm to 7.00pm, Sheviock Memorial Hall). The Health Action days have included health checks, time to chat to a representative from CHAT (Community Health around Torpoint) and the Patient Participation Group of Rame Group Practice but most importantly, the presentation by NHS England on the future of Millbrook Surgery and Lodge House. At the same time, NHS England are releasing a survey for all patients of both GP Practices (Millbrook Surgery, Lodge House, Cawsand Surgery and Penntor) to gain an understanding of which Surgery you use, are you happy with the current service you receive, any other health services you would like to have in the local area or any other comments you wish to add. But reading between the lines I understand they are also asking ‘Is there a need for two surgeries?’ I see this as a golden opportunity for all to come out and express your ideas, suggestions or concerns, to state what you want as a part of your health care services in the local community. There is a need for greater consideration of opening times of your Surgery, suitable appointment times with your GP and/or Nurse, getting to and from your Surgery, availability of other services such as minor injuries unit, mental health, and regular assessment of long term chronic conditions. All of these I am reminded of, regularly by many of you when there is a problem with getting to a surgery not so locally or trying to get an appointment. I would like to encourage everyone to take 5 minutes and to consider the future of your Surgery and other health services on the Rame peninsula…then complete the survey highlighting what you truly hope for with regards to the future of health services here on the forgotten corner of Cornwall. To complete the survey, all patients of Millbrook Surgery and Lodge House will receive details about how they can complete this survey. Anyone else can complete the survey either by going online to: www.engage.england.nhs. uk –search for Millbrook. This will run from 5th July until 4th August 2015. A paper copy of the survey will be available from Millbrook and Lodge House Surgeries, CHAT office in Torpoint and from us here in Millbrook Pharmacy. I would like to take this opportunity to ask you of health services that the pharmacy could consider to offer in the future. Let us know next time you are in the pharmacy or drop me a note in the post or directly in our white outside mailbox. (You will need to lift the top flap of our mailbox to post your note). We are talking with CHAT about having ‘Health Checks’ done within the pharmacy. We will keep you posted on our Facebook page with further details about this. Here are some of the services we currently offer…we invite anyone over 40 years old to have a free blood pressure check and to get to know your numbers. This only takes a few minutes then you will receive a sheet with your recordings. By the way don’t forget to ask for a free cup of coffee afterwards. We do encourage regular monthly blood pressure checks. By understanding and knowing your numbers, this can be valuable to give your GP especially if you have any health concerns. For minor ailments such as Oral thrush, Nappy rash, Conjunctivitis and Cystitis in Women, I can prescribe for any of these following a consultation and taking of your medical history. Cystitis, ladies please bring in, a fresh urine sample for testing, this will take about 10 minutes. Emergency Medicine Supply is available on Saturdays when your GP Surgery is closed and during limited holiday periods throughout the year. There are restrictions on what medicines can be supplied, so please give me a call on 01752 822391 if you are travelling to the pharmacy. With the holiday season here,

I do recommend that you check your supply of medication and how much you currently have. If you are going on holiday then please put your medicine repeat request in early, stating on your request form that you are going away on holiday and for how long. Remember to take those extra items such as sunscreen, insect repellent, plasters, antihistamine, Loperamide and maybe some paracetamol. Check your first aid kit, jolly handy when doing those extra jobs around the house and garden as I have recently discovered. If you are going to spend a lot of time in the sun, remember to Slip on a shirt, Slop on sunscreen, Slap on a hat, Seek shade, Slide on your sunglasses and take regular sips of water. (This comes from an ad with cheerful Sid the seagull by sunsmart, shown in Australia and New Zealand back in the 80’s to help prevent skin cancer. Kids use to sing it when coming into the pharmacy…slip, slop. slap) The CCard scheme is for 13 yrs to 24 yrs, you are entitled to free condoms which are now available from the pharmacy. If you do not have a CCard then it will only take a few minutes to complete a confidential form that does not require personal details, then a CCard can be given to you for future collections. Emergency contraception is available free for those under 25 yrs. Asthma in check is an important and helpful guide to using your inhaler correctly. This only takes a few minutes of your time in the privacy of the Consultation room and there is no charge for this service. If you are struggling with asthma please book a free appointment with me or call in to the pharmacy. Our prescription delivery service is a bit different to a courier service. I visit everyone needing the delivery service with one of my team. During this time, I gain an understanding of the medication you take, when your delivery is best for you and help to provide additional support with your medicine management if required, also completion of forms will be required with a signature. This service is ideal for those housebound, terminally ill or those receiving bulky dressings. We currently have delivery slots available in Crafthole, Sheviock, Wilcove and Torpoint. Lisa and Andrew are our two main prescription delivery drivers, they also work in the pharmacy so they have an understanding of OTC medicines and other shop items which can be brought out on the run too. Often the van can be seen later in the day when the pharmacy has closed, this is usually due to making home visits or delivering an urgent medicine such as an antibiotic that has come into the pharmacy, towards the end of the day. I feel it is very important to get a dose in that evening and not having to wait until the next day for the arrival of your antibiotic. Medicine Management, New Medicines and Medicine Review are different types of consultations I do depending on what medicines or services you currently have or need. These consultations provide valuable information, offer reassurance and time for questions in the privacy of the consultation room away from the shop area where you may be overheard. Medicine Waste. This is a big problem, we cannot use any returned medicines even if they have not been opened. If you are on the Repeat Dispensing system and you have stopped taking a drug, please let us know as well as your GP if they have not given you instructions to stop. When you reorder your monthly repeats, please double check your current supply. Will it last you another 28 days? If so, please do not reorder that drug. I have visited many with medicine changes then ask if I can take away any old or unused medicines only to watch medicines being removed from the kitchen cupboard, oh I’ve got some in the bathroom here too then yes there some here next to me in the lounge…’How did you build up so much?’ ‘I stopped taking it.’ ‘You didn’t stop reordering it or you could have let me know so we didn’t dispense it’ ‘Oh I know but I didn’t want the Doctor to know I wasn’t taking it’. ‘Does he know now?’ ‘Well not really, I did say I was thinking of stopping them’. If this is you, please call me or let your GP know. There is often a good reason why you have stopped your medication such as you feel, it has made you feel worse. Together we can sort this out for you. Please feel free to return out of date, unwanted, unused medicines for disposal. Any needles or sharps, then please call Cornwall Council on 0300 1234 100 and ask for the Waste Department. They should be able to help you with the safe removal of these items. I have a tremendous team working with me. Clare, Andrew, Carly and Kayleigh are kept busy in the dispensary. Lisa, Tanya, Zoe and Carlie work in front, meeting and greeting you all. Between them they have other talents that some of you may

You are not judged on what you eat but guided with small changes that in time make a big difference. Karen runs the free weight management food log programme. Karen is also an Ayurveda Dietary and Lifestyle Consultant. Due to Karen’s current studies in Allergy testing, there are limited spaces for consultations with her. Emotional wellbeing such as grief, stress and worry is becoming a big factor in many lives. Zoe is busy with training in the Bach Flower remedies. These gentle flower essences work on one’s mental outlook and temperament not on the physical condition. Rescue remedy is a blend of Bach flower remedies that is well known and used in times of fear, shock or stress. I will end with what lies ahead for the next six months…a good summer, the rugby world cup but more importantly… the continuing and growing health services for our local community. Thoughts come into my head…if we don’t use it we will lose it. We must have our say or it could be taken away! Thank you for your time reading this and your continuing support Lindsay

As local groups celebrate the WI centenary Wilcove members hear about the...

Cakemakers and trouble makers! WILCOVE

What a truly memorable month June has been for the ladies of Wilcove Women’s institute as our members participated in nationwide events and celebrations marking the WI Centenary. On June 2, Sue Walters and Ann Moore travelled to Buckingham Palace to join WI members from branches across the nation at the WI Centenary Garden Party which was hosted by the Duchess of Cornwall, Countess of Wessex, Duchess of Gloucester and HRH Princess Alexandra. While Anne and Sue did not have the opportunity to be introduced to the Royal party Sue was thrilled to have met members of the famous WI Calendar Girls. These plucky ladies from Rylstone and District Women’s Institute in Yorkshire hit the headlines in 1999 as they ‘bared all...behind an array of vegetables, buns and household objects’ to produce a charity calendar which was sold in support of Leukaemia and Lymphoma research. Not only did their exploits raise the profile of the WI in a most spectacular way but it also inspired a film, stage play and future generations to ‘strip-off’ in support of other good causes. On June 4 the WI hit the headlines again as the Queen, the Princess Royal and Countess of Wessex joined WI members at the annual conference held in the historic Royal Albert Hall. For the first time in its history the WI conference was broadcasted using social media which allowed members throughout the country to witness the proceedings and hear the various speakers. And what a line up of inspirational speakers there were at the conference this year. The first address was delivered by the Queen - who is President of Sandringham WI - reflected upon the proud history of the WI and how a formidable Canadian called Madge Watt brought the concept of the WI to the UK in 1912 and persuaded Queen Mary to become involved in the organisation which was launched in 1915 in Anglesey. Lucy Worsley, a BBC presenter and joint chief curator of the Historic Royal Palaces followed on from the Queen’s speech by taking the audience on a riotous and riveting journey from 1915 to the present. As Lucy aptly highlighted in discussing the history of the WI the stereotype of ladies who make jam and sing Jerusalem, could not be further from the truth. Indeed many of the WI founder members aptly described by Lucy as ‘cake bakers and trouble makers’ broke the law and were imprisoned in support of women’s suffrage. However, the WI really came into its own during the two great wars when members played a key role in food production and home security this being illustrated in the TV series Home Fires. Following Lucy on-stage were Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Helena Morrissey, both ladies delivering inspirational speeches which outlined how modern women can continue to break the glass ceiling and to contribute to society by challenging traditional stereotypes and roles. Full coverage of the NFWI annual conference is on Youtube youtube.com/ user/WomensInstitute. On June 5 Lorraine England a member of

Several members from WI groups in South East Cornwall attended the Centenary Garden Party at Buckingham Palace the Wilcove WI and felt/fibre artist joined other ladies from the Cornwall Federation of Women’s Institutes at the Royal Cornwall Show, Wadebridge where she demonstrated needle felting to members of the general public visiting the WI marquee. Lorraine also had the great honour of presenting to Princess Alexandra a gift of a small hand crafted needle felted dog wearing a Cornish tartan silk collar. Boosted by fine weather and a number of great attractions the Royal Cornwall Show was a tremendous success for both the organisers and WI with record numbers attending. On June 13 the Wilcove WI ladies continued with a Cornish theme and served Cornish pasties at their annual coffee morning in Wilcove Village Hall. Our heartfelt thanks to all who have supported the WI Centenary events to-date, however the celebrations are far from over so watch this space for more news next month. Our speaker for July will be Lynn Gould who will deliver a talk on Kenneth Graham’s Wind in the Willows. The members of Wilcove WI welcome any ladies who are interested in joining the Women’s Institute to join us at our monthly meetings and chat about what the WI can offer you. We meet at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Wilcove Village Hall.

CRAFTHOLE

June is always a busy month - and this one was no exception. This year, in case you have managed to miss it, is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the WI, and the organisation has been celebrating in all manner of ways. Two big events stand out from the rest. The first, an invitation to a garden party in the grounds of Buckingham Palace, and the second being the annual general meeting,

held at the Albert Hall. The garden party was a great surprise, and the lucky member chosen to go was decided by ballot. Teresa Colrein won the ballot, with Joy Kentisbeer as reserve. In the end, they both attended the event. Journey was by coach, with ladies in comfy track suit clothes, but strutting their stuff when emerging from the ladies toilets in Reading services. It was strange walking across the palace forecourt to see the tourists poking their cameras through the railings. The party was attended by the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duchess of Gloucester, Princess Alexandra and the Countess of Wessex. It was impossible to get close, but we did see them at the top of the terrace steps when they arrived, preceded by the Queen’s bodyguard, before making their way to the Royal tea marquee. Imagine getting tea for 8,000 ladies. The mind boggles. We circulated and met members from other parts of the country. The next big event was the annual meeting held in the Albert Hall. Dianne Stephenson was our delegate. The Queen, Princess Anne and the Countess of Wessex were the very special guests, and the whole meeting was broadcasted live on youtube. Our annual strawberry tea was held in the garden of Barbara and Michael Snowling, with members relaxing in the brilliant sunshine. A perfect spot to enjoy a lazy afternoon. The afternoon speaker at our June meeting was Andrew Besley, a retired press photographer, whose early inspiration came from watching the Flying Enterprise being towed into Falmouth. He is most known for his last picture of Penlee lifeboat before it sank. Competitions were won by Mel Parry and flower of the month by Gilly Gurr. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month in the village hall at 2pm, and visitors are welcome.

TORPOINT

President Rosemary Slee welcomed everyone to a well attended meeting despite the fact that several members were on holiday. Although they were not successful in reaching the podium this year the ladies who entered the Royal Cornwall show competition ‘Let’s Celebrate! 100 years of WI’ were thanked for their effort and enthusiasm. Members were reminded of several forthcoming trips and events which are taking place during the summer months. A visit to Little Harbour Hospice in St Austell followed by a lunch in Charlestown on July 6, The Lions Fair in Torpoint on July 18 and a trip on the Bodmin Railway on August 13 to name just a few, it will be a busy time. Our speaker was Rosemary Pellew, Chairperson of Torpoint Archives who gave a most interesting and informative talk on the history of the Torpoint Ferry. It was Wilcove’s Lorraine England demonstrated needle felting at the Royal Cornwall Show

accompanied by slides, photographs and newspaper cuttings and also a ferryman’s hat and old tickets. Rosemary gave members a 200 year history of the ferry from the first floating bridge through to the introduction of steam and chains. She finally brought us up to date with the three ferries we see today which have already been operating for nine years. The talk was interspersed with anecdotes and members were reminded of when the Bostock and Wombwells Circus came to Torpoint in 1922 and Julia the elephant jumped off the ferry into the river causing quite a commotion but eventually she did manage to swim ashore! After the break Rosemary Slee gave us an account of her visit to Buckingham Palace Garden Party commemorating 100 years of the Women’s Institute. She said it was a spectacle to behold to see over 7,000 WI ladies dressed in their finery on the lawns at the back of the palace. After the arrival of the Royal party which included Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, the ladies were given a wonderful tea which included finger sandwiches and dainty cakes. Rosemary said talking to other WI ladies from all over the country was one of the highlights of the afternoon as was the attendance of the original calendar girls. The Yeomen of the Guard provided a colourful sight and a lasting memory will be of all the members singing Jerusalem as the Royal party headed back to the palace. Competition results: Flower of the month: 1st Jean Morgan, 2nd Enid Gaved, 3rd Pat Woodhouse. Letter F: 1st Pat Woodhouse, 2nd Jacqui Rust, 3rd Sylvia Fraser The meeting ended at 10pm after a very enjoyable evening. The next meeting will be the Summer Supper to be held at Rosemary Slee’s house on July 22 at 6pm. Members have been asked to dress in garden party regalia.

MAKER WITH RAME

This month we sang Jerusalem to the accompaniment of 5,000 WI ladies and the Royal Albert Hall organ, in a recording made at the annual meeting in London recently. Our meeting began with a minute’s silence in honour of an ex-member, Sybil Norman, who has sadly passed away. Sybil left the village to be with her daughter after the storm in February 2014 severely damaged her house in Garrett Street. Janet James gave us a report on the annual meeting and also the Royal garden party at Buckingham Palace, both of which she had been fortunate enough to attend. The Royal garden party, which was arranged in acknowledgement of the 100th anniversary of the WI, took place on June 2, and was presided over by the Duchess of Cornwall. Also present were the Duchess of Wessex, Princess Alexandra and the Duchess of Gloucester. Janet also spotted the ‘Calendar Girls’ and was able to take a photograph of them. Two days later saw Janet at the Royal Albert Hall for the annual meeting, which was presided over by the Queen accompanied by Princess Anne, and the Countess of Wessex. All the royal ladies are members of their local WI groups. The Queen gave a moving speech, congratulating the WI on it’s anniversary, and marvelling at all the things women have achieved since 1915. There were then speeches by several famous women, including Lucy Worsley, TV historian, and Tanni Grey-Thompson, former wheelchair athlete and TV presenter. Having been let down by our speaker for this month, we were delighted to welcome Joan Brown, who had kindly volunteered to step into the breech and tell us about the antics of her family’s cats and dogs over the years. She regaled us with stories of a cat with attitude, and his relationship with the family dog, which kept us all laughing for the best part of an hour. She said she had learned a lot from them too, and that they are far more intelligent and understanding than we ever give them credit for. Her red setter came to her rescue once when she was taken ill, and he went home to fetch help for her. Our speaker for next month is Judge John Anderson, who will speak about the work of the Crown Court. Non members are always welcome at our meetings.

By Rev Alison Richardson Minister at Cornerstone Church, Mount Gould and Millbrook Methodist Churches

Imagine for one moment that you are in your ‘prime’, been out for a lovely Saturday evening around Torpoint with your boyfriend but you both may have had a little too much alcohol to drink. After an argument over nothing really, he has walked off without you. It is an awful thing to happen at the best of times, but at night? The group of friends that you were both with went their own way once the row started, now you are alone, cold and upset. You are vulnerable too, but you may not realise this at first. Did you know that there are people who can and will help you to keep safe, and to get home? They are the Street Pastors. Did you know that many Christians are involved with this wonderful activity? Sadly not enough, they are really short of both street and prayer pastors at present, so I am taking this opportunity to appeal to you all, and raise awareness of this ministry. Please look at the Street Pastors website for information: www.streetpastors.org The Street Pastors will not judge you or criticise, they will not use the opportunity to read the Bible to you, or preach to you, they just want to help you. Why? Because they care and believe that everyone is important. Keeping people safe on the streets at night is the concern of every Christian that I know. We are not all called to the ministry but we are all called by God to support it.

Street Pastors Do you know the story of the Good Samaritan? Jesus once told the story, it is about two people who, in turn, should have stopped and helped the injured man on the roadside, but instead they ignored him and went by, the third man stopped, dressed his wounds and took him to safety, leaving money for his care. Sadly some people today will pass you by, but a Street Pastor will stop, and see that your immediate needs are met, before they go home for the night. And they do this without looking for reward, or praise. They do this because they love and serve Jesus and because He loves us all. No words are needed to say that we Christians love Jesus, our hearts and actions speak much more powerfully.

Second World War veteran honours top Royal Marines musician A 95-year-old veteran of the Arctic Convoys has presented an award to the most improved member of the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth. Eric Greenleaf, a former Royal Marines musician, was invited to the band complex at HMS Raleigh to personally present the prize to 24-year-old musician Aaron Cousins, who hails from Whistable. The Band has developed a close bond with Eric, who lives on the Barbican, and were honoured last year when he kindly donated a prize as a tribute to the musicians of his own generation and to mark his links with the band today. This is the second time the prize has been presented. To decide the recipient each member of the Band votes on who they believe is the most improved musician. Major Jason Burcham, the Plymouth Band’s director of music, said: “Eric is a source of inspiration to all of us. He personifies the contribution and sacrifices made by his generation, and brings that part of the Royal Marines Band Service history to life. His generosity in sponsoring this award is just another way of maintaining links between our respective generations and has more credence because it is awarded by the Band’s membership.” Eric is in regular contact with the Band and has attended numerous concerts and other events as their guest. In 2013 the Band arranged for him to be presented with his Arctic Star Medal by the Second Sea Lord during a passing-out-parade at HMS Raleigh.
