world at your feet is part of city’s cultural olympiad It’s already been a busy year for Plymouth – and it’s going to get even busier. As this issue of the magazine was going to press, the city was preparing to host the National Armed Forces Day on June 30. Unfortunately our print deadlines meant that we cannot carry coverage of this hugely important event in this issue. However, we’re sure the city will provide the perfect setting for Armed Forces Day. With the Red Arrows, nearly a dozen military bands and hundreds of service personnel involved, Plymouth was set to attract thousands of visitors as once again the city hosted a high profile national event. July, August and September will see a host of major events taking place in the city, starting with the Barbican International Jazz & Blues Festival at the end of July, running through to the new Marine City Festival in September. In between we not only have the Champion of Champions British Fireworks event in August but also the ever popular Flavour Fest. And in the midst of all that Britain will be hosting the 2012 Olympics - which will be celebrated in many different ways in Plymouth. Plymouth’s contribution to the Cultural Olympiad will include a mass participation dance and theatre performance, with elements across the city’s waterfront, incorporating sites with historical links to stories about migration. The performance called World at Your Feet will celebrate Plymouth’s unique heritage and culture and bring young people from across the city together over the weekend of July 14 and 15 with other events later in the month. You can read more about World At Your Feet on pages 24 and 25. Hope you enjoy the latest issue!

success so

fashionable for tracey and tanya Two Plymouth women who took the plunge to launch their own boutique are set to celebrate three years in business together. Friends Tanya Davies and Tracey Trott proved that it’s never too late to be successful entrepreneurs. Both in their mid forties at the time and with families growing up fast, they set up the Little Black Dress shop in Saltash in September 2009. Despite the economic difficulties of the past three years and with the help of their mums and a close family friend, they have established a popular business with plenty of regular customers. Tracey has a background in fashion retailing and sales with more than 20 years’ experience. Tanya’s business experience is mainly in the civil service. The new business came about when they were on a shopping trip to Saltash back in 2009 and happened to walk past the newly-built shop unit in Keast Mews, just off Fore Street in the Cornish town.

Tanya and Tracey of Little Black Dress in Saltash

“We said it would be a great place to have a boutique and one thing led to another,” said Tanya. “We spent a few weeks working out the figures and coming up with a name for the business - and then took the plunge.” Little Black Dress has been likened to an Aladdin’s Cave. Although not huge, the premises stocks an amazing array of dresses and other stylish clothing, footwear, handbags, jewellery and accessories. Their success has been based on offering fashionable ladies wear at prices that are not only affordable, but often also less than customers would pay in the High Street. “Some people think that our dresses and clothes look expensive. It’s true they do look expensive, but the good news is that we are able to keep the prices at a level which are very affordable,” said Tanya. “We have built up a good number of regular customers, many of whom travel across from Plymouth,” said Tracey. “We even have one lady who comes across from Spain twice a year to buy new dresses for her wardrobe. “One of the problems we have to overcome is that people don’t know we are here. Once they discover the Little Black Dress they invariably become regulars. We even have some customers who say they’re not telling their friends about us because they want to keep the secret to themselves,” she added. Little Black Dress stocks dress sizes from 6 to 18 with leading labels such as Hybrid, Traffic People, Little Mistress and a range of popular Towie (The Only Way is Essex) style dresses. “We do our best to stock only a small number of each style so that customers can feel reassured they are buying an original item for that special occasion. When it comes to proms we keep a list of the dresses we have sold for that event so that we avoid the embarassment of two girls ending up with the same dress,” said Tanya. “We’re always changing and refreshing our stock so that we always have new styles available for customers. And we do our best to keep the prices as low as possible,” added Tracey. Dresses start from as little as £30, T-shirts from £12, jewellery and accessories from £2, and trendy wellies and flip flops from £3.50.

redundancy can be a life-changing as one plymouth couple have Losing a job through redundancy can have a shattering effect on families. But for one Plymouth couple it has proved to be a positively life-changing experience. As a top marketing professional Sas Horscroft had more than two decades experience working with major brands and blue-chip companies, including the last seven years as one of the senior managers at a major Plymouth company. But all that came to an end in December last year when she was made redundant. “There had been talk of re-structuring for a while, but when the news came that I was being made redundant it still came as a shock,” said Sas. Her high-flying job with Wrigley’s took Sas all over the UK and Europe - which meant that husband Dave was for several years a house husband looking after their young daughter. After Sas was made redundant they faced a stark choice. A move away from Plymouth so that Sas could secure a similar senior marketing role - or a complete change of direction. “Moving up to somewhere like London would have meant a bigger mortgage and probably even less time with my daughter,” said Sas. “That was not something we

wanted. We both love Plymouth and have many friends and contacts here, so we needed to find an alternative way forward.” After weeks of deliberation and soul-searching, they decided to become selfemployed and set up their own businesses. Although a big risk, it enabled them to not only stay in Plymouth, but also to spend more time together as a family. Sas decided to use all her extensive corporate experience to set up her own marketing consultancy called Orange Chilli Marketing. “I spent weeks and weeks networking and meeting people. I had decided on my strategy, including the name of the business, and then organised my website and officially launched the company in June. “All the hard work is now beginning to pay off and I have now started to secure business,” said Sas. “I have a relatively low cost base which means I can offer all my experience with big brands to local businesses and agencies at prices they can afford.” Meanwhile Dave was looking at other business opportunities. Having tried, in vain, to book someone to clean the oven at their Peverell home in December, Dave realised that there was a possible answer to his future employment.

Sas and Dave Horscroft..launched two new businesses when Sas was made redundant

experience – discovered “I discovered that the existing oven cleaning companies in Plymouth are all so busy that there is a long waiting list for appointments. I eventually did book an oven cleaner and watched him at work. I realised it was something that I was quite capable of doing,” said Dave. With help from Tony Hart at Working Links, Greg Harding at Outset Finance and Jacob Burn at Natwest, Dave was able to secure a loan to purchase a van and all the equipment to set up his own oven cleaning business - Star Oven Cleaning. He has undergone specialist training so that he is totally professional in the new role. “Nobody likes cleaning ovens and some of the off-the-shelf products are not only caustic and toxic they also reduce the lifespan of the oven,” said Dave. “We only use non-toxic, eco-friendly products which are fume and odour free. “And ovens are ready to use immediately after we have cleaned them – unlike the off-the-shelf products which need to be left for several hours.” Since launching his new business Dave has been successful in not only building up a clientele of domestic customers, but has also secured a contract with Shoreys, one of Plymouth’s leading letting agencies. Dave said: “Shoreys director Jacqui Courtier has been very supportive and we’re delighted to have been appointed by them, particularly in view of their outstanding

reputation as one of the top letting agents in the city.” “It’s early days for both of us, but we are delighted with the way things have gone since stepping out on our own,” added Sas. BBC presenter simon reeve visits plymouth and lifts the lid on his travels around the Indian Ocean By Plymouth travel expert Anthony Goord Last month I was fortunate enough to meet Simon Reeve, the popular BBC TV presenter whose recent successful series featuring the Indian Ocean has been both fascinating and enlightening. If you weren’t lucky enough to see his series of programmes, cameras followed his journey around various countries that border the Indian Ocean. As expected, The Maldives, Mauritius and Sri Lanka were portrayed as the wonderful holiday

destinations they are with the numerous relaxing beaches and fascinating cultures proving to be the main attraction for visitors. Simon and his production team covered not only tourism but many other aspects of Indian Ocean life. The content of the programmes was carefully balanced to show viewers both the familiar exotic holiday destinations and the social, commercial and environmental issues that many tourists would be completely unaware of. These include the over-fishing of the seas, significant levels of poverty in many countries and the global issue of waste and pollution, which is as much of a concern for the future in this area of the planet as it is in the more developed, western world. The series certainly increased my awareness of issues of concern that exist around these idyllic far flung holiday hotspots and helped put things into perspective. Many of the Indian Ocean’s problems are unknown or easily forgotten when living in the UK and watching this series helps to appreciate that, however badly off we feel, we are all in fact relatively lucky. A few weeks ago, Simon Reeve visited Plymouth and, for one evening only

With a backdrop of the Aquarium’s Eddystone Reef and a fascinating summary of his experiences, I think that the evening will be remembered for some time to come by all those who attended. To coincide with Simon’s visit, Peter Goord Travel are having a promotional video shot for the promotion of our recently refurbished offices. If you visit YouTube on the internet and type in ‘Peter Goord Travel’ you can view the finished article. It includes interviews with my brother and staff as well as an interview with Simon Reeve when he visited our West Park premises. Your feedback on the video would be greatly appreciated as it will be used to promote Peter Goord Travel not just in Plymouth but on a nationwide level. Each month I have asked a member of staff to write a short blog on a recent travel experience they’ve had. Whether at home or abroad, I’m sure you’ll find it very interesting. This month it is the turn of Andrea James, my manager. Andrea writes: “I have worked at Peter Goord Travel for nine years and I have been manager there since July last year. “When the Orient Express Day Trip from Plymouth was announced for 2012, I was determined that I was finally going to experience this luxurious train journey. From the moment my leather bound ticket wallet arrived I knew I was in for a special day! “The excitement began when I arrived at Plymouth Station and looked around at all the elegantly dressed passengers also waiting to board. We watched the train pull into the station, the crew disembarked and waited at each carriage to greet us and escort us to our private compartment, where a perfectly laid table and canapés awaited. “Almost as soon as we were seated, the champagne was served and our journey began. We were given a route map for our journey which seemed almost irrelevant as we were mainly here to enjoy the food and the surroundings. “During our four hour trip, we were served a delicious five course meal which included a salmon and lemon sole starter, followed by grilled breast of guinea fowl

and finished off with my favourite: a banana, ginger and toffee fool. “Specially selected wines were served to accompany each course and, as I was with family and friends, we finished our meal with another glass of champagne! “The staff were friendly and attentive and made sure we wanted for nothing. A gift trolley also passed through the carriage for any souvenirs we wished to purchase. “The four hours passed by and almost too quickly, we were back in Plymouth. This is a special day and I would highly recommend it for a special anniversary, birthday or just a treat; we’ll keep you informed when the next trip is announced! “This was probably the most expensive lunch I’ve ever had but also probably the best. This isn’t just about the food though, it’s about the whole ‘Orient Express Experience’ and it definitely leaves you wanting a little more…… Happy Holidays! Even if you don’t have young people in your own family, you will probably be aware that this is the time of year when businesses are inundated with applications from job seekers. With youth unemployment at disturbingly high levels not just across the country but in Plymouth, the City Council and the Coalition Government are working on initiatives to help deal with the hopelessness and frustrations brought about by the apparent lack of opportunities for our young people. It’s tempting when you are busy in your business to put unsolicited applications - which invariably come to you as round robin e-mails and as such can be a bit uninspiring - into the ‘too hard or do later basket’. Even when you know that you could probably use an extra pair of hands and have considered that you may have an opening for a trainee, it’s never been a process to undertake lightly and, frankly, we usually need a bit of a push. For many years, micro businesses have been acutely aware of the work involved in recruiting a young person or apprentice properly – because success invariably relies on identifying the right person for the opportunity and then being in a position to offer dedicated training and supervision once they are in post. In the last couple of years, small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) have been told that the UK economy is looking to the private sector for jobs creation and that taking on apprentices could be a part of that and the FSB has been very been very clear on the kind of help we need to deliver opportunities when we have them. Bob Harrison is Plymouth’s Employer Account Manager for the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) and at a recent meeting he told me that Plymouth has the best record in the UK for apprenticeships, which he puts to good recruitment practices by the training providers and colleges which are servicing us local employers. Currently there is a fair amount of support on offer to help those of us who recognise we have an opening for a young person, who with the right training, will become a valued member of our business. To my mind, it’s only worth going down this route if you are committed employer, as it’s a waste of everybody’s time if you are not genuinely looking to grow your business (and don’t forget that apprenticeships are also aimed at current employees). The NAS is tasked with providing (by March 2013) up to 40,000 Apprenticeship grants with a value of £1,500 to SMEs recruiting 16 to 24 year olds to encourage us to take on new apprentices. This is in addition to the training costs of the Apprenticeship framework, which are met in full for 16 to 18 year olds and 50 per cent for 19 to 24 year olds. Obviously there are eligibility criteria, which can checked out on apprenticeships.org.uk or directly with Bob Harrison, who is keen to help as many businesses as he can. In common with many employers in recent years, I too have encountered some poor literacy and numeracy skills in CVs and applications, but honestly I have also witnessed the satisfaction of discovering unpolished talent, which, with the right help, has really shone for all concerned. Yes, it probably is a bit of a task to seek out the right person, but if we are serious about developing our businesses, we are going to have to commit to doing this - no such thing as a free lunch.

enterpreneur paul a winning recipe new catering Sunday roasts remain as popular as ever - just ask enterpreneurial Plymouth businessman Paul Rowley. He recently launched his unique Roast 2 Go business – and it has proved an immediate winner. Paul is no newcomer to success: his catering concern The Rowley Food Company has been growing steadily since it was established in 2011 providing catering for private parties, weddings and also public houses. It was his contract with a pub in Mutley which ultimately led to the launch of Roast 2 Go. “I asked my chef to do me a roast as a takeaway and it was brilliant. Some of the pub customers latched on to the idea and it has gone on from there,” said Paul. Roast 2 Go delivers freshly prepared roast dinners direct to the customer’s door at prices lower than some of the bigger restaurant chains charge for eat-in. “I have kept the prices at an affordable level and emphasise that all our meals are freshly cooked using locally sourced ingredients. We offer free delivery to customers within a two mile radius of our kitchens in the Barbican, so the food is usually ready to eat right away,” he added. Paul’s service has expanded rapidly since he took over as owner of an Indian restaurant in the city at the end of last year. He has re-branded the former Shapla Balti as the Barbican Balti and on Sundays his English chefs utilise the kitchens to prepare roast chicken and roast beef dinners – which are also available to diners in the restaurant between 12 noon and 4pm. “Some people said doing roasts to go would never work - but others have said what a brilliant idea it is. It’s certainly been a big success so far, so much so that I had an inquiry from someone in Birmingham asking if I was interested in offering a franchise opportunity up there,” said Paul. Roast 2 Go is proving popular with customers of all ages - from students and senior citizens, who qualify for a 10 per cent discount – to families and couples alike. Paul enjoys doing some of the deliveries himself, appreciating the direct contact with the customer, but has also had to take on additional delivery drivers to cope with the demand.

serves up with his venture “As a nation we’re big on Indian and Chinese takeaways - so why not Sunday roasts,” said Paul. With a freshly cooked Sunday roast with all the trimmings delivered to the door for £7.95 (£11.95 for two and £19.95 for four) it’s hardly surprising his team is being kept busy. “The Barbican Balti is only open in the evenings so it means I have the kitchen facilities available for all my other catering activities. It’s been an ideal acquisition for me as I have been able to expand my catering portfolio and also gain direct experience of the Indian restaurant and take-away market.” Paul has quickly got to grips with the challenges of an Englishman running an Indian restaurant. “When the staff heard I was taking over I think they were worried they might lose their jobs. I was worried they might leave - but I wanted to keep all the staff because of their experience and expertise. “I’m delighted with my Bengali chefs and the quality of the food which they serve,” he added. “We now offer a real value-for-money takeaway service as well, which is proving very successful.”

by Indians and Bengalis – traditional dishes which have been specially prepared by our chefs.” Paul said that he had been welcomed to the Barbican by the owners of other Indian restaurants in the area. “I keep regular contact with them all and they seem really pleased that I’m running the Barbican Balti. “Many people know this area of the city as ‘curry corner’ because of the number of Indian restaurants around and this is the ideal place for my business to grow.” Barbican Balti, 153 Vauxhall Street, Barbican, Plymouth Tel 01752 269566 www.barbicanbalti.co.uk Roast2Go Tel 01752 604807 www.roast-2go.co.uk

summer exhibition

Tavistock Town Hall is hosting a rich and varied selection of artwork created by members of ‘Drawn to the Valley – Artists of the Tamar Valley’ in August.

The exhibition runs between from Wednesday August 8 to Sunday August 12, 10am to 4.30pm (closing at 4pm on the final day) and is a taster of what is in store during the Open Studios event that takes place over the August Bank Holiday period between August 25 and September 2. This year, the Tavistock exhibition will include stunning glass work by the group’s first guest artist, Richard Glass, who is Devon-based but regularly exhibits in New York. Another innovation at this year’s show will be the opportunity for visitors to buy an original piece of art, maybe for the first time, at a modest price through the group’s ‘mini originals’ scheme which will run within the main exhibition. Artists will be producing work in any twodimensional medium, including collage,

of ‘drawn to the valley’ artists In his foreword to this year’s exhibition directory, Tim Smit of the Eden Project said: “These artists absorb something out of the air and earth of this amazing part of the country to produce very special work capturing the atmosphere, mood and emotion of this area in their own ways. Surely something to cherish.” The Drawn to the Valley group has become an important artistic presence in Devon and Cornwall and the 120 members, who live and work in the Tamar Valley and its surrounding area, include painters, printmakers, ceramicists, sculptors, calligraphers, jewellers and textile artists – something for all tastes. stars in concert to mark end of armed forces week The honour of marking the end of this summer’s Armed Forces Week has been awarded to Plymouth Philharmonic Choir. The 150-strong choir and 50-piece orchestra have been asked to put on a special performance of Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man, the most performed work by a living composer in the world today, and certainly a favourite with the Choir’s local audience. It will take place at The Guildhall in Plymouth on Sunday July 1 at 7.30pm. The piece charts the growing menace of a descent into war, interspersed with moments of reflection. It shows the horror of conflict, and ends with the hope for peace in a new millennium, when sorrow, pain and death can be overcome. Perhaps one of the reasons The Armed Man resonates so profoundly with people in the South West is because there can be few individuals or families whose own Juliette Pochin lives have not been affected by war and bloody conflict, and when listening to this touching, at times terrifying, music, powerful memories are re-kindled. The Armed Man features a soprano soloist and bringing more than a touch of glamour to the occasion – the stunningly beautiful and exquisitely voiced Juliette Pochin, also known as The Domestic Diva. Her recording and concert career has led her to work with many of the world’s greatest orchestras and she has shared the stage with fellow musicians as wide-ranging as Simon Rattle and Meatloaf (on ITV’s Popstar to Opera Star). Juliette’s voice can also be heard on the soundtrack albums of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Star Wars. Clearly the Guildhall audience is in for a real treat. Juliette says she is delighted to be performing in the city. Conductor Christopher Fletcher is also including in the musical programme Andrew Carter’s Horizons and, as befits this Diamond Jubilee year, Sir William Walton’s Coronation Te Deum.

The fifth annual Barbican International Jazz & Blues Festival has set sail and will be taking place from July 27 to 29. The festival started life in 2008, alongside the Artemis Transat transatlantic yacht race, and we’ve been programming superb jazz and blues from outstanding local, national and international artistes since that time. This year, the Festival is part of a flotilla of waterside events, moored up alongside Plymouth’s Classic Boat Rally and the Port of Plymouth Regatta. Organisers have teamed up with those maritime happenings to create a waterside bonanza of classic boats, dinghy sailing, yacht races and good, good music. The Festival will be based around West Pier – so there will be lots of free music beneath the Prawn on the Barbican. There’s music on the water as well with a fantastic, harmonicafuelled Blues Cruise, with Johnny Mars, Michael Roach and own harpman Thomas Ford on Saturday’s briney bill. Plus gypsy jazz fans can enjoy the Classic boats in sail to a soundtrack of Hamer & Isaacs on the water on Sunday. There will be sounds of jazz and blues on dry land, with gigs at The B-Bar on Castle Street (which is also Festival HQ for all your festy questions), Plymouth Gin, Bacaro and further inland at dBs-Live. The National Marine Aquarium hosts a jazz-umbrella workshop.

training matters

taking the 10 steps to career success With the Olympics just around the corner there is nothing like such a hugely competitive event to really shake up the nation and the world, to encourage and motivate people to try something new, whether it is a sport, a new hobby or project or even aiming for a new career. Athletes train exceptionally hard to qualify for the Olympics and show sheer dedication and focus in their chosen field, enabling them to live the dream. We see similar dedication from our students here at Pitman Training who want to make changes to improve their job prospects, and work hard to get into the career they want or simply learn new skills for greater job satisfaction. So, for example, if you want to be a medical secretary, office manager, accounting technician or executive PA, do something for you!! Just as those competing in the Olympics go through various stages to enable them to achieve their goals, here are our 10 steps towards changing your life to achieve your career Gold Medal: 1. Assess your situation – the first step is to determine your current skill level. Are you someone who achieves more working towards short or long term goals? Are you self-motivated or do you require more support and guidance?

2. Have a goal – Do you want to have made changes in a month, six months or a year? Look at what time you have available and what you can realistically achieve. Once you have decided, stick to it and visualise where you will be in that time. 3. Secure financing – make sure before taking on anything new that you can comfortably afford it, so that you stay committed. Investing in a new career will reap huge rewards personally and professionally and it is important to make a plan so that you can achieve your goal. It is often worth making small sacrifices to reap huge rewards at the end. 4. Choose a subject – think about what you need to do, what you want to do and what you will enjoy and we will help you choose the right combination of courses that will benefit you the most and suit you personally. 5. Enrol and begin – the hardest part is often making the decision to start something new and actually making the commitment. Once you have enrolled and started your course, the hardest part is over and from there on you know that you are actually working towards what you want or need to do. 6. Organise your routine – students soon discover how long their attention span is, what length of study time is productive for them and whether they study best at home or in the training centre or both. Once you work out what suits you best it is important to get into a good routine to enable you to stay on track.

by

Charlie Waters of Pitman Training Devon & Cornwall

7. Visualize your success – whether you are you aiming for promotion, getting a job after a career break or a whole new career. Imagine what you are striving for and how good this will make you feel and what positive changes this will make to your life. It is important to keep sight of this so that you stay focused. 8. Enjoy a sense of achievement – as you study and pass exams, getting good exam results really spurs you on as you begin to study the next module/course. Gaining new qualifications is exceptionally motivating and a huge confidence booster!

9. Share your successes – make job applications if looking at working somewhere new or if moving up the ladder in your current employment let your employers know what you are achieving and keep them up to date on your progress. If sending job applications and attending interviews make sure that you have a well prepared CV and seek advice on good interview techniques. Be as well prepared as you can and remember that job interviews are very good experience in themselves. 10. Be proud of yourself – know that you did your very best and enjoy the rewards, only you can change your life and remember it’s never too late, after all the oldest Olympic medallist was 72 years old!! By Dr John Moore BDS LDS RCS (Eng) Cerec Registered Trainer of The Smile Clinic at John Moore Dental In Plymouth we are blessed with a range of professional, dedicated and experienced local dental services. We have an excellent selection of general dental practitioners providing care for the community and a range of more specialised dentists providing oral surgery, periodontics “Every tooth in (gums), endodontics (root canal), a man’s head is orthodontics, (braces), peadodontics (children’s dentistry) technicians and more valuable technology to rival anywhere in the country. than a diamond.” I always tell people that when you see your Miguel de Cervantes, local dentist they can refer you to any of the Don Quixote, 1605 range of skills of all their colleagues with a simple phone call and also refer you for either a second opinion or more complex treatment.

So you don’t have one dentist. You have a team of dentists who can work together to provide a range of services and you have it locally. So let’s list a few points: Monitor, measure, maintain Prevention is the cornerstone of modern dentistry. This means repeated regular consistent visits to the dentist and hygienist to monitor and identify any changes and need for treatment. 1. Change can only be measured against a record of the past. Your local dentist has your records and your x-rays. They can see you every year and will be able to compare and spot change early intervening where necessary. 2. Everyone will always tell you the best way to find a dentist is by personal recommendation. It’s about finding a team to look after you with whom you can communicate with comfort and confidence. Your comfort and confidence is in their interest. 3. When you need a dentist urgently, isn’t it great to have them on your doorstep. 4. Dentistry is not a product based service. It is not like buying a car or a kitchen. Whether you need a filling, a crown, veneers, a root canal treatment denture or implant, all dental procedures require follow up. They know you, want you to come back, know their reputation depends on providing a good solution for you and know what has been done, what materials have been used and what has to be done. 6. If you had laboratory work done (crowns, implants dentures), they know the technician who made them. In fact they chose the technician for you to provide you with the best solution for your requirements. Your dentist has prescribed the materials and technique from a technician they trust on your behalf. You need your dentist and they need you. legal matters

The Government is introducing changes to the way in which personal injury claims are funded. If you have been injured and are considering making a claim, Wolferstans recommends that you seek legal advice before April 2013. Many people will not be aware of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act which received Royal Assent at the beginning of May 2012 and will come into force in April 2013. If you are unfortunate enough to have an accident for which you wish to make a claim for compensation after this time it may impact on you financially. The only exception currently is in claims for compensation for mesothelioma. In personal injury claims, if a claimant does not have any insurance to cover legal expenses (for instance through their home or motor insurance provider), solicitors will usually offer a ‘no win no fee’ agreement and put in place insurance to cover the claim. The insurance is necessary because if the claim is not successful the

have you suffered a personal injury? don’t delay make a claim By Tracey Barton of Wolferstans Solicitors insurance will cover any costs for which the claimant will be responsible. This can include the costs payable to third parties such as medical examiners as well as the defendant’s legal costs. The insurance does not cover the claimant’s own legal costs as under the terms of a ‘no win no fee’ agreement the solicitor would waive their fee in the event of an unsuccessful claim. Currently, in successful claims the claimant is able to recover the cost of the insurance policy from the defendant (if the claim is unsuccessful there is no premium for the claimant to pay – strange but true!). As of April 2013, this will no longer be the case and will mean that claimants who have a successful claim will have to pay their own insurance premium after they have received their compensation. Insurance premiums can range from between about £350 and £1,600 for a claim with a value up to £25,000. For claims worth more than this, the premium will be higher and dependent on the value and complexity of the claim. We expect you are thinking that this sounds unfair and we agree with you. In a successful claim, after all, the defendant has been found liable for the accident so why should the claimant lose out? Unfortunately we cannot change the law so all we can do is make people aware of it. If you have been injured in an accident in the last three years that was not your fault, and are considering making a claim, we would recommend that you seek legal advice sooner rather than later. The team at Wolferstans are experienced in all areas of Personal Injury and would be happy to discuss your potential claim. There is no charge for an initial discussion and we are happy to work ‘no win no fee’. If you are considering making a claim please contact Tracey Barton on 01752 292311.

mount wise vision becomes a reality The stunning redevelopment of Mount Wise is quietly transforming this historic former naval headquarters into one of the city’s most desirable places to live. Plymouth Magazine takes a look at how the vision to create a ‘village by the sea’ is becoming a reality If you haven’t been to take a look at Mount Wise recently then it is definitely worth a visit. Those in Plymouth who already know about this hidden gem, its beautiful parkland setting and historic Grade II listed Admiralty House, will be hugely impressed with the way in which the site is being sensitively transformed and given a new lease of life. If you’re less familiar with Mount Wise, prepare for a treat in discovering its magnificent location close to the waterfront and just minutes from Plymouth city centre, with Plymouth’s last remaining cricket pitch at its heart. From a wider Plymouth perspective, the redevelopment of Mount Wise is one of the key projects in the revitalisation of Plymouth’s world class Waterfront. So it is

great news for the city to see such an important scheme progressing so well. At a more human level, however, this project is about creating a really attractive and interesting place for families to live. The first phase of 159 new homes is now nearing completion and such is its success that almost two-thirds of the homes have either been sold or reserved. The first residents have already moved in, beginning the creation of a new community enjoying Mount Wise’s unique blend of contemporary living within a beautiful, peaceful setting, yet close to Plymouth’s cultural and economic hub. The Mount Wise site is steeped in more than 200 years of Naval and military tradition, with its 28-acres of landscaped grounds having as their twin focal points the impressive Admiralty House, which was originally built in 1793 for the Governor of Plymouth, and one of Devon’s finest cricket pitches.

The first thing that strikes you as you enter through the main gates of Mount Wise and head down the sweeping three-lined main drive is the sheer beauty and quality of new Georgian-inspired family homes and the way in which they complement both Admiralty House and the wider environment. Richard Keen, development adviser for Mount Wise, said the vision for Mount Wise was to create a development which befitted its magnificent settings, complementing the listed building and cricket pitch but also one which also encouraged a vibrant residential community through the variety of homes available. He said: “By having homes which range from one bedroom apartments to four bedroom family houses, we are drawing in a real mix of residents and there is already a strong community feel.

Most homes have off-road private parking and all are set within elegantly landscaped grounds and new streetscapes. In the summer the cricket pitch creates a village green atmosphere as the teams battle it out with bat and ball. The impressive new cricket pavilion built by Plymouth Cricket Club, with support from the Mount Wise development, will also act as a year-round hub for community activities and events for the new Mount Wise community. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area too, with Mount Wise well served by public transport. The Mount Wise grounds look out across the water towards Mount Edgcumbe, lie adjacent to Mount Wise Park and the Scott Memorial and are within easy reach of the action and excitement of the bustling city centre, Mayflower Marina and the up and coming Royal William Yard. Within Phase One of Mount Wise there is space for a local shop. Tesco Express has taken a pre-let of the larger store. Future phases will see the total number of new homes created at Mount Wise rising to 469. In addition to this, Admiralty House has planning consent to be sympathetically refurbished as a boutique hotel offering 21 bedrooms, a restaurant and associated facilities. For more information on the Mount Wise development, you can visit the on-site sales centre which is situated directly off the main avenue in the heart of Phase I. The centre is open seven days a week from 10am until 4pm, with appointments not essential but advised. plympton couple’s kitchen dream comes true – thanks to kf kitchens A Plympton couple have achieved the kitchen of their dreams - thanks to KF Kitchens, one of Plymouth’s leading independent kitchen companies. Robert and Kim Goodman had a clear idea of how they wanted to change the kitchen at their four-bedroomed detached home in Romilly Gardens. “We spend as much time as possible in our garden and I love cooking,” said Robert. “But the garden wasn’t accessible from the kitchen, which meant I always felt a bit isolated when everybody was outside and I was in the kitchen.

of the work and dealing with lots of different tradesmen – which led us to contact KF Kitchens.” Nathan Damarell of KF Kitchens, who are based at Faraday Mill, takes up the story. “I could see what Robert and Kim wanted to do, but felt that they could improve on their vision by not only extending into the utility room, but also relocating the downstairs toilet, which was accessed from the kitchen.” Nathan’s more radical approach involved using some of the space in the property’s double garage to relocate the downstairs toilet, which immediately created a more spacious and ergonomic layout for the kitchen.

“We knew we wanted to ‘bring the garden into the kitchen’ by replacing the existing windows with patio doors and also wanted to give the kitchen a complete makeover at the same time.

He arranged for various specialist tradesmen to visit the Goodman’s home to ensure that his plan was workable. It even required expert input from a firm of structural engineers because of the need to install a new load-bearing steel beam in the kitchen.

“Our idea was that this would involve extending the kitchen into the utility room to create more space,” added Robert. “We spoke to a number of kitchen companies, but they all said that we would need to organise all the building work and then they would install the kitchen. “We didn’t want the pressure of organising that side

His wife Kim said: “Nathan said that the work would take five weeks and it was completed bang on time and exactly on budget. The various tradesmen and local companies he recommended were excellent and very professional.” Nathan said that he had recommended Plymouth-based Best Quality Windows to install the new patio doors and Furnishing Collections of Peverell had handled all aspects of the new flooring. “The kitchen design we chose combined the best of traditional materials with contemporary design,” said Nathan. The kitchen units involve a combination of sage coloured painted timber and natural washed oak.

The centrepiece peninsular houses a sink and preparation area overlooking the garden and is finished with black quartz worktop. Downlighters, hanging lights and low level plinth lights create a bright and warm feeling to the kitchen. Robert said: “KF Kitchens not only helped us achieve our dream – but actually enhanced it. We would have no hesitation in recommending them.” KF Kitchens 66 Faraday Mill, Cattedown, Plymouth PL4 0ST Tel 01752 255022 web www.kfkitchens.co.uk

biggest-ever project crowns a successful year for peverell firm A Plymouth-based interior design and renovation company is building on its recent successes with its biggest-ever project and commitments extending into 2013. Sharp Developments, which is based in Peverell, is currently undertaking a complex £70,000 project which will transform a large rural property located in a small hamlet near Newton Ferrers. The man behind the company is interior designer Jamie Sharp, a former estate agent and property developer. Jamie, 31, said: “Since launching the business we have undertaken a range of projects, from luxury bathroom and kitchen installations to more major renovations involving extensive construction work. Jamie Sharp discusses his plans with Angie Sieniewicz

“What makes us different is that we can not only carry out the building work but also satisfy the interior design requirements right down to sourcing high end bathroom products, kitchen appliances and soft furnishings. “Our simple philosophy is ‘we will do everything for you’. We take the customer’s ideas and dreams and use our interior design, project management and building skills to create exactly what the customer wants.

“Unlike many tradesmen we are not tied to specific suppliers or products, allowing us to create environments that are unique and personal to the customer, suiting their home and their budget.” It was this philosophy that attracted Pete and Angie Sieniewicz to approach Sharp Developments. “We saw Jamie’s ad in a local magazine and asked him to come and talk to us about our property,” said Angie.

“Our ability to provide all these services under one roof is what really appeals to our clients as well as significantly reducing the overall cost of the work. A common misconception is that an interior designer is an additional cost that most people can’t afford but if it’s a project with a budget of £15,000 to £20,000 plus then we in fact generally save people money.

However, the layout of the property had never fully met their needs and they felt that a fresh approach was needed.

SAL E

Jamie explained: “It is an impressive four bedroomed property located in five acres of land, with views across the South Hams countryside. However, the layout of the property – which is a converted barn – was not sympathetic to family living. “The property is on three levels with the ground floor leading out onto the gardens. However, the kitchen, dining room and main living area are currently on the first floor with bedrooms and a bathroom on the second floor. “The family inevitably spend most of their time on the first floor, which means they are not fully enjoying the benefits of the gardens because it means walking downstairs to access the grounds. Also a property of this size demands at least one en-suite.” It needed a radical approach to transform the layout and Jamie drew up detailed proposals and plans to create a large open plan kitchen and dining area on the ground floor, linked to an extensive living area, which is currently under-used. The plan also involves installing large folding glass doors at ground level to open out straight onto a new landscaped patio area in the garden. The current lounge and kitchen are being transformed into a master bedroom,

management of the project and the quality of the skilled tradesmen he is using for the various aspects of the work. “We would never have been so adventurous without Jamie’s experience and skill. He keeps us fully informed at every stage of the work and keeps a close eye on all the issues involved, particularly the budget and timescales. We are delighted with what he is doing and can’t wait for the transformation to be completed.” For more information contact Sharp Developments on 07817 115841 www.sharpdevelopments.co.uk Jamie Sharp outside the South Hams property where his company is carrying out a £70,000 refurbishment

complete with a new glass balcony, and a guest bedroom - both en-suite. The work also involves creating a new office for Pete, who frequently works from home in his role as a technical adviser in the marine industry. Jamie’s proposals cover the smallest details, even down to the type of handles he wants to buy for one of Angie’s antique side boards, to the colour schemes and type of paint to be used in each room. “We plan and source all product choices before we start work on any project, it’s much easier to manage the budget when you know what you’re going to spend on every little detail. This job involves a lot of construction work, re-wiring, a new central heating system as well as the installation of a new Aga.” said Jamie. The 13-week project started in June and is scheduled for completion in August. Angie said: “Jamie’s proposals were clearly very radical, but we loved the concept as soon as he explained his thinking. We have been particularly impressed with his

new tiling service is spot on for plymouth homeowners A leading Plymouth tiling company is returning to its roots to offer a new domestic service to homeowners in the city and surrounding area. Spot on Services (SW) Ltd – which has just launched sister company SOS Tiling – has established an enviable reputation for its commercial tiling work handling major contracts not only in the South West but also across the rest of the country. But when Spot On was first launched in 1989 by current managing director Russell van der Schouw and former company chairman Michael Piggott they were two men and a van primarily carrying out domestic tiling jobs in the South Hams. Within five years they had expanded into the commercial market and over the last two decades have established strong trading partnerships with major construction companies, including the country’s leading housebuilders. They are one of only a handful of companies in the South West able to carry out not only tiling, but also screeding and hygienic cladding. “This has given us a significant position of strength in the market and enabled us to handle major projects. “At present we are working on the new John Lewis department store in Exeter installing 10,000 square metres of screed and 7,000 square metres of tiling. We also have a substantial contract for Kier South West installing tiling and screeding for new student accommodation in Penryn. “The experience we have gained over the last 20 years and the significant buying power Spot On enjoys means we are in an excellent position to add domestic work to our range of services,” added Russell. The launch of sister company SOS Tiling - which will focus on wall and floor tiling services to domestic customers - coincides with the appointment of two senior members of Spot On’s staff as associate directors. Helen Wells, who has been with Spot On for 12 years and Steve Rickard, who joined the company three years ago, will help spearhead the move into the domestic market. The creation of SOS Tiling means that Spot On - based in the officers’ quarters at Plymouth’s Crownhill Fort - has almost come full circle since it was first launched.

Steve Rickard, newlyappointed associate director at Spot On Tiling

The appointment of both Helen and Steve follows the retirement of Michael Piggott and his wife and fellow director Mary - and is a key element of Spot On’s expansion and development plans for 2012. Russell – whose wife Ingrid is also co-director of the company - said the appointments were in recognition of the abilities of Helen and Steve, and the dedication they both have to their respective roles in the company. He said it was also was the ideal opportunity to establish the new domestic service SOS Tiling as both Helen and Steve would be making an enormous contribution to the success of the new business, as well as Spot On. “Both Helen and Steve have crucial roles in the day to day running of Spot On and their knowledge and expertise will be hugely valuable as they help take both the

Spot On and SOS Tiling brands forward,” said Russell. The aim for Russell and his team is to bring Spot On’s renowned level of service and professionalism to the domestic market. The company already has a pretty impressive client list having tiled the Cornish home of celebrity comedian Dawn French, as well as TV chef Jamie Oliver’s 15 restaurant and Rick Stein’s fish restaurant. SOS Tiling will specialise in all areas of wall and floor tiling, offering ceramic, porcelain glass and mosaic tiles, as well as natural stone. It will also focus on bathrooms and kitchens, as well as the installation of high quality, effective wet rooms solutions complete with underfloor heating. “Although we don’t have showrooms which customers can visit, we do have close trading partnerships with a number of leading tiling suppliers, including Nicobond of Plymouth,” said Russell.

discuss their tiling requirements and needs. We will then help source the materials and our team will carry out the installation,” he added. The company is also at the forefront of a number of innovations, including water jet tile cutting to create intricate bespoke designs. Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings are also available on request. Russell said the industry had faced a difficult period in recent years and he hoped 2012 would mark a new chapter for both Spot On and the construction industry as a whole. art matters

I am told the world famous artist JW Turner stayed in the flat above the Kaya Gallery in 53, Southside Street, the Barbican. From this base he went off to paint Mount Edgcumbe. The link to such artistic excellence, along with its cosy layout and historic feel, makes a visit to this gallery a very pleasant experience. Kaya’s owner Norman Holmes greeted me with instant warmth and friendly enthusiasm. I observed the same engaging attitude towards others who came in during my visit. Norman‘s ability to make people feel that they have his full attention and that he genuinely wants to hear the details of their enquiries was impressive. I found out that he had spent much of his working life in industrial relations. With a wealth of experience in people skills, I was impressed that here was a man who was very well suited to building good relationships within Plymouth’s rich artistic community. He is very knowledgeable of the artists that are showcased in his gallery. He told me: “I very much want to support these real artists who are doing their absolute best despite tough economic times. There are some tremendous stories behind some of these artist’s lives. Many have risked much to concentrate on their work. The leap of not having a secure, regular income is commendable. I want to help bring them the exposure their work deserves.” I am heartened that Norman is going all out with an initiative to promote a great variety of artists work in a sale this summer. His gallery is hosting this sale on Saturday August 4 at The Treasury, next to Plymouth’s Guildhall. All the pieces will be original paintings, including some unique pieces from private collections with work by Robert Lenkiewicz, Lee Woods and Anthony Amos. Popular Plymouth artist Brian Pollard has also given his support and painted some new work especially for this exhibition. The exhibition will also feature brand new work from 11 local artists including David Gray, Jane Vaux and Claire Rice ensuring visitors will have an exceptional range of subjects and styles to observe and if they wish to buy. Most of the artists will be in attendance on the day and look forward to discussing their work or taking on commissions.

Norman explained that 2011 had been a tough year for many artists but the climate was now showing some more promising signs and that this exhibition was in itself a celebration of the determined nature of many artists who kept working hard and believing in their ability. The results of that hard work will be self evident at the show.

Do go in and visit him next time you are strolling through the Barbican. After my time in the Kaya Gallery, I popped into Simon Bennett’s studio just off Southside Street and I loved some of his work! My favourite was a painting of a lady in a sweet shop. The detail was just beautiful and there was certain softness to the feel of the painting that was really unique. Simon’s pieces will feature at the sale following on from his successful sell out ‘Phantom of the Opera’ exhibition earlier in the year. photography and interactive media firm helps to showcase local businesses A new photographic and interactive media company has been launched in Plymouth with the aim of showcasing the region’s tourism and hospitality industries. Nigel Humpherson’s apple360 venture creates virtual tours and interactive panoramas. Nigel explained: “A virtual tour is an interactive image. It starts with the creation of a seamless panoramic photograph that captures the whole 360 degree horizontal view, and full 180 degree floor to ceiling view of a space. “When published, the image can be viewed interactively, creating an immersive experience that allows the viewer to explore and interact with their surroundings.” Starting a business during tough economic times is a risk, but Nigel is confident of success. Many companies believe that cutting back on marketing spend will help them ride out the recession - the smart ones know that marketing has never been more important. Nigel said: “What’s key is to spend your marketing budget in the right way; investing in something that will get you noticed and differentiate you from your competition – and this is where apple360 comes in. “Thankfully our region’s businesses seem to be smart and here at apple360 we have already received commissions to create tours for venue marketing and promotion, visitor attractions, and educational projects.” Having worked in marketing for over 15 years, Nigel has commissioned many

58

the plymouth magazine

websites and knows how important it is to have compelling content. “Creating innovative website content for venue promotion has been our main focus. Whatever your line of business, one thing is always true – the longer a visitor stays on a website the more likely they are to become a customer. “Today’s web savvy consumers need more than just static images or video to hold their attention, and this is where virtual tours come in. A virtual tour is an engaging and interactive experience; they hold people’s attention and get them coming back again and again.” Being based in the heart of the West Country, apple360 hopes its services will be of particular interest to the tourism and hospitality industries. “When people plan their holidays, a day trip or just book dinner with friends, most will use the internet to do some research. Having a virtual tour on your website could be the difference between a sale or a missed opportunity – market research has proved that given the choice, consumers are more likely to buy or book from a business with a virtual tour than one without.” Virtual tours are not just for tourist attractions and hotels though; they are used by a wide variety of businesses. Local architectural firm the Architects Design Group commissioned apple360 to create a tour to promote its new offices at Studio 5-11. Chris Band of ADG commented, “apple360 were a pleasure to work with. Nothing was too much trouble and the quality of work was exceptional. We’ll certainly be using their services again.”

An example of apple360’s interactive work. Inset: Nigel Humpherson of apple360

Nigel has also been delighted with some very interesting early commissions. “Whilst venue promotion was our initial focus, it’s been great to see how some businesses have grasped the potential of interactive media”. Following their work with the National Trust last year, Lanhydrock House has commissioned apple360 to produce a visitor aid for the disabled. Nigel explained, “Our commission is to produce a virtual tour for areas of the property not accessible to the disabled. We’ve really gone the extra mile - including interactive and multimedia content like descriptive text, stills photography and audio. It’s a great application of the technology and we can’t wait to deliver the finished work. The Royal Cornwall Museum has also commissioned apple360 to produce a virtual tour of its new Unwrapping the Past exhibit. Supported with a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, this exciting new permanent exhibition will showcase what it was like to live in Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. Apple360 are producing a 360 degree panorama for use on the Royal Cornwall

Museum website and an enhanced virtual tour with added interactive and multimedia content for use in educational packs for local schools. Nigel is delighted with the company’s early progress: “apple360 is the result of many years of marketing experience combined with a passion for photography and media production. We are passionate about our work and the attention to detail we put in to every one of our tours. “Whatever the project, our clients can be assured of high end quality and excellent value for money.” So if you’re looking to increase hotel or restaurant bookings, encourage more university or college applications, market conferences or events, showcase your venue, or even if you have something a bit more creative in mind then contact apple360.C For more information about how a virtual tour could work for you, or have a particular project in mind, apple360 can be contacted on 01752 395360 or visited at www.apple360.co.uk

pests run riot in the recent I still can’t believe how unlucky we have been with the weather this season. Cold and then rain, so far it’s been a disappointing year for gardeners. ‘Get into gardening’ we all say and many of you have been desperate to – but the weather hasn’t been kind! Mind you I seem to remember writing last year’s July editorial during pouring rain and gales! Even the team in charge of producing the flowers for the Royal Barge struggled with the weather and getting everything they wanted ready on time but they managed it and it looked beautiful.

by

Fiona Newton and Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre

Did anyone see the coverage on Gardener’s World with Rachel de Thame and her team working hard to get it all done? Garlands, roses, lavender and a barge perfumed with flowers it looked sensational! A real honour to work on such an event and real pressure to get it right! Weather related tragedy struck in my parent’s garden just after the Jubilee when we had all those high winds. They had a beautiful Wisteria in full bloom which was destroyed. It was top heavy with the weight of the flowers so it went over and pulled the base and root straight out of the ground. We are hoping we may be able to save it but I doubt it. Shame, it had taken 12 years to reach its current form and put on an impressive show on every year! See picture (right).

Caterpillars galore at Coverack

The weather is also playing havoc with plants because all the pests are out and about and thriving. Slugs, caterpillars and snails are having a good munch at everything. Whenever you have a serious amount of damage to leaves with large holes or eaten areas it is only this group that are responsible. All other insects are too small. I always find it hard to be upset with caterpillars though, we all remember the Very Hungry Caterpillar book as a child! Look at this fabulous picture (above) taken by John from Calstock while on a cliff top walk near Coverack. I have never seen this before. Customers have seen a lot of aphid damage recently. Whitefly, green fly and black fly are rife at the moment but it’s quite normal at this time of year.

Whitefly and blackfly at work on a rose plant

A word of warning: if you have a Christmas tree growing in a pot or garden beware of aphid damage. Give them a spray now to protect them from damage because you can lose them to aphids. The picture on the left shows you what to look out for. Sometimes it is obvious and other times you have to look hard to find them! Derek will tell you more about pest control later. So over to Derek for his top tips this July.

Derek writes: This is the time of year where things really get going, but there is one group of plants that really shines this month, and that’s roses. They really do come into their own in July and are just bursting with colour and scent and the promise of more to come. Many people tend to be a little bit afraid of growing roses, thinking that they are difficult and often tricky to look after. However, following a few basic principles, they are remarkably simple to care for and extremely hardy and tough. The first rule is soil preparation; roses enjoy a rich, fertile soil, so dig in plenty of compost or well rotted manure into the planting hole. Mix a few generous handfuls of slow release plant food or chicken manure pellets into the compost as well. This will give your rose a great start in life.

The second rule is dead head regularly: if your rose is a repeat flowerer (which most modern hybrids tend to be) this will encourage more blooms to be produced. Also feeding your rose fortnightly will also encourage it to produce more flowers. The third rule is to keep on top of pests and diseases; it is quite common for roses to suffer from infestations of blackfly, greenfly, whitefly and aphids. Look out for clusters of them gathering underneath flower buds and along the tips of fresh shoots. They prefer the soft fresh growth because it is young and sappy. If you spot them you can brush them off with your fingers or blast them with a hose jet, but this will need doing repeatedly. The most effective method of control is to spray your roses with a systemic pesticide to eradicate the infestation and prevent it from return for six weeks. For fungal diseases such as rust, black spot and mildew, a systemic fungicide is

wet weather... the best course of action to take to clear them, but good garden hygiene such as removing and binning diseased and dead leaves and a good airflow around the crown of the rose will help prevent infection from spreading and reoccurring. The fourth rule is pruning; prune your roses back to 45cm (18”) in the autumn to an outwards facing bud. This will help give the rose better shape and structure, prevent root rocking by severe winter winds and help promote flowering for the following year. A second prune in spring is also recommended to remove any dead or diseased branches that may have occurred in winter. Follow these four simple rules and you will have happy and healthy roses, providing you with masses of flowers all summer long. Now in stock is our range of Lifestyle plants. These plants have been specially selected to help create a lush, tropical, exotic feel to the garden or patio. This sucker on a standard rose They are perfectly happy to highlights the importance of pruning live in the garden border or are equally happy at home in pots. Most of the range is winter hardy, but they are a few that will require a bit of winter protection.

They also have the added bonus of large colourful flowers appearing from July through to the frosts. Mulch them heavily in winter and they should survive without any problems. For a striking foliage plant for the hot patio, rockery or conservatory we have Aeonium Swarzkopf. This is a fleshy succulent with black leaves that as the plant grows forms a trunk and multi-headed plant. It is a really unusual plant that is easy to look after, drought tolerant and a great conversation peace. Keep it frost free in winter. Equisetum Japonicum is a bizarre looking plant that resembles a reed, it is extremely architectural and looks great planted in a pot. It can be planted in the ground as long as it’s kept moist, but it can become invasive so it’s best kept to a pot. It is an interesting evergreen that provides structure and drama to any garden. We also have a great range of grasses, all of which are winter hardy. They will provide the garden or patio with a touch of grace and subtlety. Grasses are great at providing a buffer between big, bright, bold plants and those with strong architecture. They help to knit the garden together and provide focal points when in pots. They make great accents and accompaniments to plants that are providing the sole focus of the design. Thanks Derek! So keep your pictures coming in, look out for our big July SALE this month and send us your email address to get on our list for promotions and exclusive offers! Coach Trips are proving very popular with different destinations, still left to visit are: Lost Gardens of Heligan, Glendurgan Gardens and Coleton Fishacre. We look forward to seeing you soon! Happy gardening – Fiona and Derek

In the range we have two varieties of winter hardy bananas which are Musa Basjoo and Musa Lasiocarpa. They are both root hardy without any winter protection, re-sprouting from the ground in spring like an herbaceous perennial. With a bit of winter protection, their trunks will remain in tact and continue to from the spring as a large specimen.

Examples of some of the Lifestyle plants available now at the garden centre.
