To challenge or not to challenge the Will, that is the question? by Melanie Cotterill The loss of a loved one is always a very difficult time and emotions run high. What do you do if you are concerned adequate provision has not been
Melanie Cotterill
made for you in their Will?
Are you an eligible person to make such a claim under the Inheritance (Provisions for Family and Dependants) Act? •
Spouse of the deceased
•
Former spouse of the deceased who has not remarried
•
Child of the deceased
•
Someone who is financially dependent on the deceased
Apart from the option to make a claim under the Statutory Provisions above, do you have concerns regarding the validity of the Will? •
Are you concerned the deceased would not have understood
the implications of the Will? •
Are you concerned that the deceased made the Will under duress or may have been coerced?
A sensitive approach is required when considering who is entitled to what in a Will, as there is often a family dispute, or concerns regarding capacity to make a Will, or undue influence. Swift action is necessary in a Will or Inheritance dispute because of the limitation periods, so having an early consultation is essential. As a general guide, if you are submitting a claim under the Inheritance (Provisions for Family and Dependants) Act, the time limit is 6 months from the date probate was granted. There is no time limit for contesting a Will on the grounds of fraud. The Court can however override these limits but only in exceptional circumstances. Roper James are committed to achieving the best possible outcome for you, in the most cost effective way, and where suitable through a negotiated out of Court settlement. We will do everything we can to try and take away the stress from you and to seek a suitable resolution. Contact us now on 01752 546448 to arrange your free initial consultation.

How KF Kitchens made Christine’s dream come true ! Russell had drawn up the plans, but we couldn’t find anywhere that would accommodate us with the design,” said Christine. “Then we tried KF Kitchens, it was one of the last places we went into – and I’m so glad we did. They weren’t pushy, they allowed us to look around the showroom at our leisure.” Christine Sharpe
After two years of searching with no success, Christine Sharpe from Plympton had almost given up hope of ever finding her dream kitchen – until local family-owned company KF Kitchens came to the rescue.
“We wanted the job done properly, which included taking away a wall and getting rid of the artexed ceiling. “Everything is new,” added Christine. “the units and worktops, the floors, the appliances, the lighting and electrics, the skirting boards, the plastering and the painting. And right from the start to the very end, when they cleared away all the rubbish – they’ve been brilliant to work with.”
showroom, the work to create Christine’s kitchen was under way. And, less than a month later, she had her dream kitchen. After her experience, Christine says she would have no hesitation in recommending KF Kitchens to others: “I was impressed with the whole process. They were friendly, efficient, professional and reliable. They kept me informed from start to finish and involved me in the process at all times. There were no hidden costs, so we had no nasty surprises at the end. They told us the ball-park figure at the start and the only times it increased was due to our choices to add certain items, such as the extra lighting. And that was entirely our choice. They never used hardsell tactics or pushed us to add anything, so we were in control of our expenditure.
“I knew the colour I was looking for and Within six weeks of visiting the KF Kitchens “And now I’ve got a beautiful kitchen, which is also a real addition to our home.”

Super summer events to enjoy Plymouth is a great place to be at any time of the year - but particularly in the summer months. Plymouth boasts an unrivalled line-up of major events which attracts tens of thousands of people to the city every year - and this year is no exception. Highlights include the Plymouth Pirates Weekend, Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon and the Lord Mayor’s Festival. June opens with the popular Flavour Fest and ends with Armed Forces Day, while the big event in July is MTV Presents Ocean City Sounds. The British Fireworks Championships and Ocean City Blues n Jazz Festival are the attractions in August, while the Plymouth Seafood Festival returns in September. What’s great about this line-up is that many of the events are completely free - which can’t be bad in these days of austerity! There’s a special 24-page pull-out Summer Guide in this issue which has full details on all the upcoming events as well as details of places to visit, activities available for families and wining and dining information. Elsewhere in this issue we meet Hannah Hawkey, the talented Plymouth dance teacher who launched Rockfit fitness classes two years ago and has been overwhelmed with their success. We also focus on Foster Care Fortnight which highlights the need to recruit hundreds of new foster carers across Devon and the rest of the South West. We meet Nick Reed, the recently-appointed head chef at The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, and find out what inspires his culinary excellence. Hope you enjoy the latest edition - and don’t forget to keep the Summer Guide to help you make the most of the summer months.

people go to her Plymouth classes every week to dance to heavy metal and rock music. And she’s setting up franchises in cities across the UK, after a video of her classes went viral. She has even had requests from people in California to set up Rockfit USA. “I can’t believe how it’s taken off, it’s been absolutely amazing,” said Hannah, who has trained some new instructors in Plymouth to help take the six Rockfit classes each week. “We did a taster session in Bristol last year to get some instructors up there. BBC Bristol came along and they put a video on their Facebook page. It’s had 670,000 views! Since then, we’ve had loads of requests to set up Rockfit all around the country and abroad.” So how did she get the idea in the first place? “When I was still teaching at Stoke Damerel Community College I used to do some basic exercise classes alongside the teaching,” she explained. “Quite a few people told me that if the classes had rock music instead of dance music, they’d come along, so that’s what I did. I listen to rock music all the time, so I was more than happy!” Hannah – also known as Hannah LaRouge because of her trademark red hair – is a professionally qualified dance teacher. She took her choreography degree at Dartington College of Arts and earned a master’s in performance arts at Plymouth University, before studying for her teaching qualifications at Exeter University: “I loved teaching, but the profession became very stressful, with all the emphasis on targets. I didn’t feel I could flourish in that environment. It
WOMEN AT WORK was a hard decision, but leaving teaching and setting up Rockfit was the best thing I ever did.” Each Rockfit dance class lasts an hour, with 12 songs from rockers such as AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Queen, and German metal band, Rammstein. Hannah’s mix of dances targets toning, stability, core and cardio: “Some people have lost stones in weight since coming to the classes,” said Hannah, “and we have one lady who has asthma whose lung Photo: Masrk Dunk capacity has increased from 77% to 99%.” But Rockfit isn’t just about physical exercise. Several of Hannah’s regulars have overcome anxiety, depression and isolation since coming to the sessions: “Exercising to the music gives people a mood boost,” said Hannah. “But it’s the social side that has made a massive difference for some of the women.” Among them is Francesca, who is now training to become a Rockfit instructor: “I had anxiety issues and tried shutting myself away because being with people would trigger it. But that’s gone now because of coming here. Socially, it’s very inclusive and I’ve met loads of friends.” And then there’s Julie, who suffered from depression for 20 years after suffering a back injury: “The social interaction is brilliant and it’s just great fun – by the time you leave, you’re buzzing.” Meanwhile, Bex, who writes a blog about depression, says Rockfit has changed her life: “This time last year, I couldn’t leave the house. I was actually dragged here kicking and screaming, the first time! And now I’m out there in the front of the class and loving it.” Others have taken up running for the first time in their lives – such as Annette, who hadn’t done any exercise for 30 years but is running the Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon in May. Another regular, Cathy, attends the Saturday morning classes at Tothill Community Centre. She has autism and has difficulty attending most health and fitness classes, but at Rockfit, things are different. Hannah and other regulars “look out for her” and make sure she always gets her usual space in the class. She says it has enabled her to “get fit and have fun” and has given her “so much happiness and well-being”. Hannah also takes a class for people with disabilities at the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust, and Rockfit’s inclusive work is recognised my national and regional health and fitness bodies, including Move GB, This Girl Can and Active Devon. The Plymouth classes are held at various locations and cost £5 per session, or £20 for a block booking of five or £35 for 10. There’s no need to book a place in advance, but new joiners will be asked to complete a health form at their first session. And everyone is welcome: “We get boys, girls, men and women of all ages,” said Hannah. “Our youngest is five and our eldest is 75. People rock up in their band T-shirts and have a great time. It’s about having fun, feeling good and taking part in a friendly atmosphere with zero judgment.” Visit the website for details of classes and the Facebook page for latest news.

National charity Fostering Network predicts that over 7,000 new carers will be required this year alone to replace former carers who have retired or stopped fostering - including several hundred in the South West. The greatest need is for foster carers for older children, sibling groups and disabled children. With an estimated 64,000 children living in foster care, local authorities often struggle to find placements and in recent years independent fostering agencies have become increasingly important in recruiting carers to meet the demand. The spotlight will be focused on fostering this year during Foster Care Fortnight from May 14 to May 27 when the message is 'foster care transforms lives.' Local authorities and independent fostering agencies will be backing the campaign to raise awareness of fostering. One such independent local agency, The Fostering Foundation - which has offices in Tavistock, Tiverton and Bristol – has gained an outstanding reputation for its work. Manager Tracy Norman said: "We provide placements for children and young people who, for various reasons, are unable to live with their families. These children need the security of a family home where they will receive support, care and nurture in a way appropriate to their age and by people who will go the extra mile and not give up on them. "The whole team is committed to supporting foster carers to care for young people and children and ensure that they can remain in their placements for as long as they need to. "We have an exceptional record for providing long term stable placements which in turn means that our children and young people are making excellent educational and social achievements. "Our social workers have smaller than average caseloads
FOSTERING MATTERS which ensures that your supervising social worker can provide you with high levels of support and advice. "The team bring a wealth of experience to the task and have a real passion for imparting their knowledge and skills to foster carers to enable them to become highly trained and knowledgeable with a toolkit to support children and young people who for a variety of reasons can no longer reside with their birth families." The Tavistock team cover Plymouth, Cornwall and West Devon and recently achieved a 'Good' rating from Ofsted. Their work is based on using a therapeutic approach with carers receiving comprehensive training and peer to peer support groups. The foster carers' sons and daughters have their own support group and enjoy a programme of activities each year. One couple who have fostered with The Fostering Foundation for a number of years are Graham and Jo, who live in Cornwall. They have cared for 12-year-old Helen (not real name) since she was five. Jo said: "Helen was extremely traumatised when she arrived with us and over the past seven years we have attended a large number of therapeutic courses provided by the Fostering Foundation which have helped our child enormously. We really believe the level and content of the courses has contributed greatly to her happiness and positively helped her to overcome her traumatic past.

"She has been progressing well ever since and is now at secondary school where she is exceeding all her targets. Helen is very much part of our family and is loved by our own grown up children as if she was their own sister." Helen will stay with the Verralls until she is at least 18, but young people in care can now live with their foster carers until they are 21 under the new 'Stay Put' initiative. Graham said: "There have been many challenges along the way in terms of meeting her needs and helping her to cope with being away from her family. But it has also been very rewarding to watch her grow and develop into a happy and healthy, normal child." Graham said that the financial allowances foster carers receive are generous which enables carers, if they wish, to care for young people as a full-time profession. He added: "We all know that today, there are far too many young people in the care system, young people who need good professional support and unfortunately there are nowhere near enough professional carers to deal with that demand."

He is now leading the award-winning restaurant and culinary offer at the Duke - and is excited about the challenge. Fine dining earned the Duke of Cornwall's restaurant a second AA Rosette for Culinary Excellence, following a highly favourable inspection last year. The award is a significant accolade, making the restaurant one of only a handful of eateries in Plymouth to attain this standard. Two Rosettes are awarded only to restaurants that meet exacting criteria of innovation, technical skill and culinary judgement set by the AA. Fewer than five per cent of restaurants across the UK are considered to be at a standard deserving of two Rosettes. Nick brings passion and creativity to the role, adding delicious new dishes to the menu on a daily basis and with his extensive experience in the catering industry he is the perfect choice to lead the hotel’s food offer forward. Nick’s drive ensures that the restaurant remains fresh and inviting for returning guests and residents alike, often taking an adventurous twist on dishes. Nick said: "I was excited to be given the opportunity to head up the kitchen team, and to make my mark by implementing new menus and fresh ideas. Although I knew this would be a challenge, having worked at the hotel for five years, I felt the time was right to take the next step and further my career. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working at the hotel so far and look forward to seeing what the future brings. "I have always had an interest in food, even from a young age. I realised it was a
career I wanted to pursue whilst visiting a Michelin star restaurant in France when I was 13. The food was amazing and like nothing I had ever tasted before – I loved the fresh ingredients, and the variety of flavours. "Looking back, I have fond memories of spending time with my family and enjoying meals abroad with fantastic fresh food and locally sourced fish and vegetables. I wanted to be able to create that dining experience for others, and to inspire people to try different dishes." It all began when Nick took the decision to do a two year catering course at City College Plymouth at the age of 18. After finishing his training he went on to work at the Tudor Rose Tea Rooms on the Barbican, where he developed skills in baking and realised this was an area he enjoyed. Shortly after, he joined the team at The Duke, starting off as a commis chef which involved basic food preparation. After almost two years, the opportunity arose for Nick to become demi chef de partie, followed a year later by promotion to chef de partie, before progressing to junior sous chef and then later to sous chef. Nick gets a lot of his inspiration from British chefs such as Marcus Wareing, Michel Roux and Simon Holstone. " Seasonality also influences the dishes on the hotel menu and means that we are able to offer our guests variety as well as wonderful fresh produce," he added. "I enjoy coming up with new ideas and seeing how they are received by our guests. It is great to hear feedback from those who dine in the restaurant and to know that they have enjoyed our food." His favourite dish is a recent addition to the restaurant menu - prime Westcountry beef fillet with braised short rib suet pudding, caramelised onion and cavil near. Asked what his ambition is for the future of The Duke's restaurant, Nick said” "We will continue to work hard and maintain the current high standard. We have recently welcomed new members to the team, who will no doubt bring enthusiasm and fresh ideas to the role. "It is my long-term ambition for the Restaurant to be known as the place to go in Plymouth for fantastic food and a fine dining experience."

Nurse Sharon thought her career could be over - until she went to Foot Solutions Plymouth nurse Sharon Sheldon thought her career was coming to an end when she began to suffer excruciating pain in her feet. Having been in nursing for more than 25 years she was used to spending most of the time at work on her feet. Just over a year ago Sharon, who works in the Royal Eye Infirmary at Derriford, began to suffer extreme pain in the soles of her feet. “The pain had just got worse and worse over the months and I can’t explain how awful it was being on my feet for hours and hours on end,” said Sharon, who lives in Southway. “I was really struggling to walk at work and at the end of a shift I would have to sit down and put my feet up for a long time until the pain began to ease.” Sharon took inflammatories and used pain relieving gel, but to no avail. “I knew it was make or break for me. I could see that I would have to give up a job that I love unless something changed.” Sharon had read testimonials from customers of Foot Solutions - and decided it was time to visit the store in Royal Parade and seek their help.
Sharon Sheldon with Jo of Foot Solutions In addition to the customised insoles Sharon also purchased shoes with rocker soles from Foot Solutions’ extensive range of stylish and comfortable footwear. “I am now literally walking on air. It’s fantastic the difference that the arch supports have made. I went to a wedding
recently and forgot to put them in my shoes and by the end of the evening I was in agony again,” she said. For an appointment call Foot Solutions Plymouth or visit their store on Royal Parade in the city centre.
“The pain was so intense that it was becoming almost impossible to walk,” she said. Staff at Foot Solutions undertook a thorough and detailed assessment of Sharon’s condition and recommended customised arch supports, specially made to help overcome her problem. Sharon initially purchased over the counter insoles, which provided immediate relief and when the customised arch supports arrived, Sharon was delighted to find that she was completely pain free within two weeks.

composer Vikki s at Plymouth latest show For the best part of a decade Plymouth Comedy Club has been bringing the best and brightest from all across the comedy world. Their show at Plymouth Athenaeum on May 19 features Vikki Stone, Noel james and Chris Washington with MC Chris Brooker. As much joy as bringing a new face to the Athenaeum can bring, there’s a lot to be said for being able to bring back some of the most popular acts to tread the boards over the years. In May the club sees two of its most requested acts come back and a debut for a rising star who’s surely on his way to being a household name. Headline act Vikki Stone nearly found herself being questioned for damaging a listed building after she blew the roof off at the Athenaeum. More than just a fantastic comedian, more than just an incredible musician... This award winning artist has been wowing folk all across the nation with her nimble fingers and even more nimble wit. A rare chance to see Vikki as she’s touring the UK with her orchestral work ‘Concerto For Comedian & Orchestra’ and is in huge demand. Support is provided by Noel James, the off kilter Welshman with a rare gift for the absurd. Noel’s one liners and observations brought the house down at Plymouth Comedy Club’s Christmas special a few years back and will no doubt do the same again. The bill is closed out by Chris Washington, a postman turned comedian who took the Edinburgh Festival by storm in 2017 with his debut solo show ‘Dream Big (Within Reason)’ landing him a best newcomer nomination in the LastMinute Comedy Awards. Down to earth, everyman with a gentle manner and a charm all of his own. The show will be held together by resident MC Chris Brooker and ticket holders will also receive a wristband allowing them free entry into the Popworld club night afterwards. Not Chris though, he’s too old for all that noise.

Prostate Cancer Deaths Overtake Breast Cancer Recent headlines tell us that the number of men dying from prostate cancer has now overtaken female deaths from breast cancer for the first time in the UK. Whilst a lot of this can be attributed to an ever aging population, with people now living longer than ever, Prostate Cancer UK does say that increased funding into research could well benefit the male population. Prostate cancer receives only half of the amount of funding that is ploughed into breast cancer research. Increased funding is essential to develop better diagnostic testing because at present there is no one single reliable test for prostate cancer. Unfortunately, as this type of cancer is slow growing men can go for years without knowing they have the disease as they are symptom free, possibly until it is too late. Prostate cancer is now the 3rd biggest cancer killer in the UK, after lung and bowel cancers. The prostate is a small gland in the male pelvis, roughly the size of a walnut. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and makes up 26% of all male cancer diagnoses in the UK. In 2008, 34,335 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer and there were 9376 deaths from prostate cancer in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This figure increased to
9632 deaths in 2010. Prostate cancer is predominantly a disease of older men (aged 65–79 years) but around 25% of cases occur in men younger than 65. There is also higher incidence of and mortality from prostate cancer in men of black African-Caribbean family origin compared with white Caucasian men. The NICE Guidelines provide guidance to GPs on when a referral for suspected prostate cancer is mandatory under the so called ‘2 week wait’ rule, as follows: “Refer men using a suspected cancer pathway referral (for an appointment within 2 weeks) for prostate cancer if their prostate feels malignant on digital rectal examination. “Consider a prostatespecific antigen (PSA) test and digital rectal examination to assess for prostate cancer in men with: • any lower urinary tract symptoms, such as nocturia, urinary frequency, hesitancy, urgency or retention or • erectile dysfunction or • visible haematuria. “Refer men using a suspected cancer pathway referral (for an appointment within 2 weeks) for prostate cancer if their PSA levels are above the

agespecific reference range.” It is important to make an appointment with your GP if you suffer from any of the problems listed below; • needing to urinate more often, especially at night • needing to run to the toilet • difficulty in starting to urinate • weak urine flow or taking a long time while urinating • feeling your bladder has not emptied fully These can often be the first signs and symptoms of a problem, and as with any cancer diagnosis earlier diagnosis and treatment can often lead to an improved prognosis. Here at Wolferstans we often meet clients who have been diagnosed too late in the day, and whose prognosis is therefore negatively impacted. This can sometimes be as a result of a failure of medical staff to notice those crucial first signs and symptoms of the onset of the disease, and thus make an appropriate referral. If you or a member of your family has suffered an injury as a result of medical negligence and you would like to receive some free initial legal advice, without obligation, please contact Jodie O’Connor on 01752 292360 or email her at joconnor@wolferstans.com.

TRAVEL MATTERS
The wonderful world of Aus!
Well, what can I say about my trip that doesn’t take up pages and pages. Australia wasn’t on my ‘must see’ list of destinations, as I presumed it was too far for a short holiday....how wrong I was! I was one of a group of 11 travel agents met and escorted along the Melbourne to Sydney coastal road. So, Karen after arriving in Melbourne in the early Henderson, one hours, we transferred to our hotel to of Peter Goord’s freshen up, then hit the streets using the free tram network around the city. longest-serving This is a unique feature in Melbourne, making it a clean, members of friendly city, easy to staff reports on environmentally navigate and lots to see and do - from her recent visit Chinatown to the Lane Ways, with its cafe to Australia culture and graffiti art. However, we found ourselves at the Melbourne Star, an equivalent to the London Eye, where we experienced a VIP trip. Our host pointed out the sights, districts and mountain range. From here we walked to the Eureka Skydeck. The ‘Edge’ on the 86th floor, is a glass box on the side of the building. Luckily, I have no fear of heights, although the glass floor does make your tummy turn! From Melbourne we travelled to Phillip Island for a day
32\
The Plymouth MagazineMay 2018
filled with amazing experiences. Our first was a flight over the coast and harbour with Phillip Island Helicopters. The scenery was breathtaking. Next, we travelled to the Nobbies Boardwalks and Artic experience seeing penguins, seals and birds. After lunch we boarded a boat to Seal Rock and its thousands of seals. We watched them playing in the water and were given plenty of information on their habitat and habits, but I have to say the ultimate highlight of the day was watching Penguin Parade, a natural phenomenon that happens every night as the sun goes down. Hundreds of penguins literally walk up the beach to their nests, bypassing the lookouts and making their way up the hill. It really is a sight to behold and a wonder that we humans are allowed to witness. Phillip Island really is a nature lovers paradise, with plenty to see and do, and only an hour from Melbourne. Our third day involved more nature and beauty in the National Park of Wilson’s Promontory, Australia’s most southerly point, offering a campsite and motorhome stops. Visitors can book a cottage to make the most of walks through the reserve, on well-trodden paths and boardwalks, searching for the wildlife while taking in the views. Raymond Island is a must, especially if you have children. You catch the foot passenger ferry to the island, then follow the koala trail in search of these quiet sleepy animals in their natural habitat amongst the island’s residents: we counted 13 in total. In the evening we stopped at Lakes Entrance, a town that sits on 90-mile beach, enjoying an evening on an
TRAVEL MATTERS Aussie farm with great hospitality. The following day we moved on to Pambula and joined Captain Sponge’s Magical Oyster Tour. This was my idea of heaven ‘eating’ fresh oysters harvested that morning, although many in the group weren’t so keen! On to our fifth day and we were well and truly spoilt, firstly with hand feeding wild kangaroos and then we were passed two bags containing orphaned Joeys inside. Needless to say the group melted. Afterwards we headed towards Narooma and boarded a seaplane for our flight up the coast to Batemans Bay. What fabulous scenery and the first time I’ve been in a seaplane. Arriving at the Bay we moored at the Oyster Shed and I was greeted with more oysters. Bliss, until I had to go kayaking on the river (not bliss) but I did it! The penultimate day, driving up to Sydney, via Huskisson on Jervis Bay, we stopped for fish ‘n’ chips after a dolphin cruise in the bay. The dolphins were playing with the boat, and I even managed to get a video. So beautiful. Onwards to Sydney. We checked into the Hyatt Regency on Darling Harbour, and while drinking a cocktail in the Zephyr Bar watching the sunset, I couldn’t quite believe the week I had just experienced, but what the last day bought was something else. After an early start we arrived at Sydney Harbour Bridge for the ‘Bridge Climb’. I’m so thankful that I don’t suffer from a phobia of heights! After dressing up in the not so fetching boiler suit, being breathalysed, wired up with radios, and hats off, we climbed, up, up and up. Our guide showed us points of interest
www.cornerstonevision.com

and explained the history of the bridge. The whole experience lasted three hours, and is something I’ll never forget. My afternoon was then spent wandering around the Opera House, and just taking in the reality that I was there and all the exciting experiences I’d had over the last six days, before the flight home in the evening from Sydney. Although the whole trip was amazing I have three highlights. The first has to be the Penguin Parade at Phillip Island. I would definitely recommend that you book the VIP pass. This gives access to an underground bunker putting you at eye level with the Penguins as they pass by. Next would be the seaplane, oysters and kayaking at Batemans Bay. A personal triumph for me getting into a kayak. Lastly, it has to be the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb. Words cannot do justice for my fabulous trip – it was phenomenal!

ART MATTERS
Why Plymouth artist Julie loves ‘special’ Delamore Arts
More than 130 artists and sculptors from around the UK are exhibiting their work at this year’s Delamore Arts in Cornwood – including several that live and work in Plymouth. Among them is Plymouth-born artist Julie Ellis, who took up painting professionally a few years ago, after her three children had all started school. Julie says she has to pinch herself most mornings, as she drives though the entrance to the Royal William Yard to get to her studio: “I just think, ‘how lucky am I? I’m working as a full-time, professional artist, doing what I love, and my studio is here’!” Julie is a resident artist at Ocean Studios in the Royal William Yard and her studio can be found in a quiet corner of the Cooperage building. She took the studio two-and-a-half years ago, while she was in the final year of her Art, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking degree at Plymouth College of Art. “I needed the space as there was an unexpected demand for my work, which was something that happened very quickly,” said Julie. “I had my first exhibition in Cornwall while I was still at college and everything just took off.” By the time she graduated in 2016, Julie was already establishing a name for herself. And yet she’d only taken up art formally in 2012, when her youngest daughter started school: “I dropped her off at school and for the first time in years, I found myself thinking ‘oh, I’ve got some time on my hands now, I can do something’.” That “something” was a Foundation Course at the art college, followed by her degree: “I’d always had the desire to do something creative and once all three children were at school, I decided to do it. I never set out to sell my paintings. I just wanted to paint for the love of it. But the response to my work has been amazing.” The success of her early exhibitions led to other opportunities and brought her to the attention of Delamore Arts. The event is open every day in May (10.30am-4.30pm) and takes place within the unique setting of the Delamore

ART MATTERS Estate on the edge of Dartmoor. While the paintings and smaller sculptures are exhibited in the historic Delamore House, the larger pieces of sculpture are placed around the gardens and lake. This year, the South West Academy of Fine Arts’ (SWAc) Summer Exhibition is also taking place at the same time, at Delamore’s new Stables Gallery. Now in its 16th year, Delamore Arts was only ever intended as a one-off, but the estate’s owners, Gavin and Nicky Dollard, have turned it into an annual event. Why do they do it? Simply because they are passionate about art and keen to support artists. As part of their support, Delamore Arts awards the annual Delamore Prize to the most promising arts student to graduate from Plymouth College of Art. Visitors to Delamore Arts are encouraged to make a day of it by taking in the gardens and having a bite to eat at the café. Admission is £8 (under-16s free), which includes brochure and parking. Details about all the artists at Delamore 2018 and the venue are on the website. The event raises money for good causes – over £100,000 has been raised to date. This year’s charity is Plymouthbased Friends and Families of Special Children, which offers information, support and services for families of disabled children. This is the second year that Julie has been invited to show her work at Delamore: “I feel very lucky to be invited to be part of Delamore. It really is a special event, it’s so diverse and inclusive. And it’s priceless, the sort of support they offer.” The four paintings Julie is showing at Delamore are representative of her work, which presents ethereal places where the sky dominates the land and water on the canvas. She uses whatever tools work best to achieve the desired effect – including a decorator’s paint brush. She is inspired by 'a sense of place and a sense of belonging' and feels a special connection to the South West’s coastline. Yet most of the places in her paintings don’t actually exist: “My work is from my imagination, so the places aren’t real, they only exist in my head. I start off with a mark on the canvas and I always allow the paint to dictate the composition. I like my paintings to be open and ambiguous, so people can use their imagination and think of places they’re reminded of.” Delamore is part of a hectic 2018 for Julie. She’s just started a collaboration with another Ocean Studios artist, printmaker Sue Lewry. ‘The Big Picture Project’ focuses on Plymouth – in particular, the Royal William Yard: “It’s a definite change for me to be painting somewhere that exists and is recognisable, but I still find myself abstracting it,” said Julie. “I’m painting like a crazy lady at the moment, but it doesn’t feel like work when you’re doing something you love in a place as inspiring as this.” www.julieellisartist.co.uk.

The two local men behind Host Galleries are entrepreneur Neil Stallard and well-known Plymouth art expert and gallery manager, Trevor Horswell. The pair were discussing potential new business opportunities when the former Café Rouge site in Whimple Street became available: “The building drove the decision to start an art gallery because it lends itself to it perfectly,” said Neil, managing director of Host Galleries. “It’s a great location as well. It’s in the city centre, it’s next to the Bretonside development and there’s lots of car parking. We also had a blank canvas to work with, so we were able to take everything back to square one and start again.” Neil and Trevor got the keys to the building on 27 February and just over a month later, they were opening the doors to the gallery with a spectacular Easter launch. They couldn’t have got off to a better start, securing an exhibition of work by Britain’s biggest selling contemporary artist, Edward Waite, who also staged a live studio in the gallery. Host Galleries will have three major exhibitions each year, when the work of the guest artist will take over the entire main gallery. For each of the other nine months, a smaller ‘Meet the Artist’ exhibition will be shown – these are ‘teased’ in advance in the preview room.
Trevor has worked in the art gallery business for 35 years and says this is the most excited he’s ever been about a project: “I think we’re bringing something unique and very polished to Plymouth. If you could lift this building up and put it in the middle of Mayfair, it wouldn’t look out of place. It’s a fantastic building with huge windows, and inside, it’s the best gallery space I’ve had in all those 35 years.” A stunning space deserves stunning artwork – and there’s plenty of that lined up for the rest of 2018. The gallery is following up having the UK’s best-selling artist by attracting an exhibition by America’s current biggest seller, Chris DeRubeis in August. His remarkable mixed media pieces have earned Chris a global reputation and he’s introduced a new form of art that he calls ‘Abstract Sensualism’. Between now and then, there are exhibitions by internationally-known actor and artist Jean Picton in May, Amy Louise in June, and in July, Totnes-based Leanne Christie – a rising star on the UK’s art scene. The Amy Louise exhibition will be a major, month-long event because of the “incredible” response to her preview pieces: “She is selling in galleries nationally, but she has chosen Host Galleries for her first UK solo exhibition,” said Trevor. He added: “Having an exhibition every month is something I’ve never done before. It’s keeping the gallery really fresh all the time, and there’s always something new for people to see and buy.” Edward Waite filled the gallery with 56 new pieces he had created during the previous 12 months – including his first ever installation piece, a red telephone box. His cityscapes featured some of Plymouth’s most iconic landmarks, such as Smeaton’s Tower and The Dolphin pub. The internationallyacclaimed artist said: “This is one of the best gallery spaces I’ve ever worked with. It’s great to see new, independent art galleries such as this open up and support artists by hosting major exhibitions.” All the guest artists and those featured on the website are available for commissions. The gallery also offers an arts consultancy service, and a ‘try it at home first’ option, so people can see the work in situ before buying. In the longer-term, Neil and Trevor have a vision of adding selected local artists to the website, allowing them to showcase and sell their work. And later this summer, they hope to further enhance the gallery by making it a venue where people can mingle and chat. Neil said: “You can’t beat actually seeing art in the flesh. You can look at pictures online, but it’s only by coming in and seeing the colours, the textures, the mood, and the scale, that you get to appreciate them properly. www.cornerstonevision.com

BUSINESS MATTERS
“So, we want people to come in, spend some time and feel comfortable while they’re here.” They admit that opening an art gallery in the current uncertain economic climate is something of a risk, but Neil said: “There is definitely a demand for high quality art and there’s nothing like this really in the whole of Devon and Cornwall, which is why we’re already looking at opening other galleries elsewhere in the South West.” Visit the Host Galleries website for more information, or pick up a free glossy brochure from the gallery.

EDUCATION MATTERS
Talented and hard-working students honoured for their achievements at City College Community work, volunteering and overcoming adversity were just some of the many achievements celebrated at City College’s recent Student of the Term awards. The termly ceremony recognises students who really stood out from amongst their peers, made a positive contribution to the college or local community, or have overcome personal challenges to achieve highly in their studies. The award winners were joined by family, friends and their nominating lecturers to enjoy a delicious three-course meal prepared by the College’s hospitality and catering students before receiving their certificate and prizes. Phil Davies, principal and chief executive of City College, said: “The Student of the Term awards ceremony is an important termly event for the college and is one of the highlights of our academic year. It provides us with an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge some of the remarkable achievements of our students and recognise publicly their hard work and commitment. “These students, some of whom have had to overcome additional barriers, have all achieved fantastic results and deserve to be congratulated. The staff at the college are enormously proud of their accomplishments and the way in which they reflect so well on the city. It really is an honour to celebrate the outstanding qualities and achievements of our
students and to share in their successes with family, friends and tutors.” Among the Award Winners was Maisie Hill, 17, from Southway who won the Childcare, Health and Social Care Award. Maisie is studying a Diploma in Health and Social Care and is currently on placement at Trevi House - a rehabilitation centre for mothers with drug or alcohol dependency issues - where she receives constant praise for her positive and enthusiast approach to her work. The impact of her caring nature is also felt within the wider community where she has been involved in several charity events including Operation Christmas Child, Saltash at Home and Food Bank. “I have always wanted to work in the care sector and the college and my course has started me down the pathway to my dream career. I love being on placement and getting to work in the local community. Trevi House is an incredible place and I am privileged to be involved in such important work. It almost seems silly to be rewarded for doing something I love.” Meanwhile Colin Potter, 52, from Lipson won the Access to Higher Education Award. Colin has overcome adversity, achieving abstinence after thirty-five years of addiction. He now works with local young people with mental health issues through mindfulness sessions. Colin hopes to go to university to study psychology and use his learning to continue to help others.

GARDENING MATTERS By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre We may not always have the hot and sunny weather, but Mediterranean plants and gardens have always been popular and are gaining in popularity too. They evoke memories of sun kissed holidays and if done correctly are surprisingly low maintenance. It is easy to see why people want to capture the magic of past holidays in their own gardens, coming home from work on a warm sunny day and stepping out into a Mediterranean garden with a glass of wine is the perfect escape from a stressful day. Many of the plants in our gardens originate from warmer countries. With a changing climate, too, it’s now a lot easier to re-create an elegant, sunny courtyard or bring a touch of the Med into your garden with numerous varieties of drought-tolerant plants and the right range of paving, gravel, pots, hanging wall pots and ornaments. Scent is very important in Mediterranean gardens. They tend to be filled with strongly fragranced plants such as Lavender, Rosemary, Choisya, Rose and Jasmine. Tall, upright, pencil Italian cypress trees, that are seen all over the Mediterranean are typical of this style of garden have a distinctive wood sage scent. Using plants with silver foliage is also typical of Mediterranean-style planting. These include Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’, Helichrysum italicum, Convolvulus Cneorum and the soft, feathery Stachys byzantina. These are often repeat planted in great drifts. Cotton lavender (Santolina) or French lavender (Lavandula stoechas) are also used en masse and, once they’ve flowered, they are shaped into neat mounds. This way of planting provides architectural interest after flowering has occurred and is used to great effect. Plants with punchy, vibrant colours or contrasting leaf shapes tend to be interspersed between them for dramatic effect, plants such as Alliums, Agapanthus, and Red Hot Pokers (Kniphofia). A pergola, arch or covered area is often found in the Mediterranean garden. It provides shade on hot days and is the Photo: Fotolia perfect canopy under which to enjoy eating alfresco in warm weather. There’s an array of plants that will grow well over a pergola, including many vines and, for a really exotic look, you could try a grape vine (Vitis). There a some great hardy grapes that can be grown in this country that will not only produce edible fruit, but is also a great ornamental plant, especially in autumn when the leaves change colour before they drop. A great evergreen climber, the evergreen Jasmine, Trachelospermum Jasminoides, it is grown for its white, star shaped

flowers that are produced throughout the summer in abundance and are highly scented. It is now easily available as large climbing plants in the UK and it can also be trained to grow horizontally along a wall to great effect. Gravel is the natural choice for a Mediterranean garden, as it reflects the heat and light, adding to the ambience. Gravel gardens do best in full sun, in an open site. You can use a landscape membrane over the soil before planting, which will help to suppress the weeds growing in-between plants. Plants that do well in gravel include herbs. Many of them come from the Mediterranean and will appreciate having gravel around them, as well as some mixed into the soil for extra drainage. Gravel can also be seen as a low-maintenance style of gardening and, as well as being ideal for herbs, lends itself to plants such as Lavender, Euphoria, Cistus, Eryngium, Beared Iris, Hebe and Agapanthus. The latter prefer their roots to be contained, so also do well in pots. Pots are the obvious choice for a Mediterranean-style garden. Try to stick with terracotta and large Grecian-style urns to create the right look. You could also add in some glazed pots, if you like them with blue glaze a common colour frequently used in the Med. Large empty terracotta pots or olive jars in gardens are great as a feature or focal point in among planting or on their

own on a terrace. Choosing what to plant in your pots can be a minefield, but I would not over complicating things and keeping the amount of varieties in the pots so a minimum, either a single variety or a large specimen under planted with something else. A potful of Pelargoniums or Argyranthemums always looks distinctly Mediterranean. Keep the planting simple, as you may need to bring some of your plants indoors during cooler months. Plants such as citrus, Bougainvillea and Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia) all need winter protection, so it makes more sense to use a single specimen when doing your larger pots. Hardier plants that can be left out in their pots and fleeced in winter include Bays, Callas (Zantedeschia), Euryops, Agave, Yucca, Cordyline and Echeverias. These are all architectural plants that have a uniquely exotic appearance and are happily grown in pots. Hanging wall pots are extremely popular in Mediterranean gardens, these tend to be planted up with trailing Pelargoniums, Calibrachoas, Surfinias, succulents such as Echeverias, Aloes and Lampranthus, Osteospermums and Bacopas. Just keep them well watered and deadheaded and they’ll flower all summer long for you. Get out in the garden and create your own little patch of paradise and enjoy it. www.cornerstonevision.com
