Despite this certainty, statistics show that 30 million adults in the UK have not provided for their loved ones by making a Will.
The Citizens Advice Bureau revealed that family enquiries concerning a loved one who has died without making a Will has doubled in the last 5 years. If you die without having made a Will then The Law of Intestacy will take effect which some believe is dated and rigid. For example, it makes no provision for unmarried partners or complex family circumstances. Even your spouse may not receive your whole estate if the value is more than the statutory legacy. So why leave it to chance? Surely it is better to prepare a Will so that you can rest assured that your loved ones inherit in line with your intentions.
of the estate leading to PARTIAL INTESTACY. •
Failing to revoke your previous Will can lead to CONFUSION.
•
Should anyone question whether you understood what you were signing can lead to an expensive CONTENTIOUS PROBATE CLAIM.
•
If anyone alleges the Will was made under duress or undue influence this can also lead to a CONTENTIOUS PROBATE CLAIM.
The average cost of making a straight forward Will is less than a Family Entry Ticket to Alton Towers. Making a Will can be straight forward and will give you assurances that you have protected those you love in line with your wishes. Your family will have peace of mind and you will have died having done what you have always done for them…..your very best!! Advice – ask about your options. Consider – think about your wishes. Execute - Sign a Will.
The rules around Wills are strict and writing your own Will can be risky:-
Your family will think you are ACE by keeping things simple for them, after your death.

Qualities which epitomise city... Innovation, celebration and dedication are three themes which feature prominently in this issue - and our city. The city’s innovative qualities shine through in two of our features - the launch of One Plymouth Cup and the development of a briliant new App called Babble. Plymouth is playing its part in reducing the amount of plastic waste, with the launch of one of the first re-usable, recyclable cups of its kind. It is the brainchild of Scott Grenney of the One Plymouth network and local businessman David Williams of Redrok and is already proving a big success, despite being launched just a few weeks ago. Hopefully other towns and cities will follow Plymouth’s lead. We also feature entrepreneurs Lana Dalby and Carly Britton who have created Babble, a women-only social networking platform for likeminded women to connect with each other, share tips, hints and knowledge. Celebrations are very much in order for a number of local enterprises: Jolly Jacks, the popular waterside eatery is marking its eighth anniversary, while KF Kitchens are celebrating 10 years in business and Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium has a big programme of events in recognition of its opening 20 years ago. You can read all about them in this issue. We also report on the launch of Halford & Homes, a family estate agents business which has opened in Peverell. Last, but by no means least, we pay tribute to the dedication of football coach Joe Geraghty who last year launched We Do Football as a special organisation for girls who want to play the ‘beautiful game.’ His hard work and determination have paid off as hundreds of girls - and boys - are now involved in coaching sessions across the city and in South East Cornwall. Look forward to hearing from you - and hope you enjoy the latest edition. GREEN MATTERS
‘Britain’s Ocean City’ leads the fight against single-use cups
Plymouth is among the first places in the UK to have a universal, re-usable, recyclable cup that can be used at participating outlets city-wide. Some of the city’s biggest employers are also getting on board by supplying the cup for their staff to use on their commute and while at work. The One Plymouth cup was launched in April, following a waterfront chat over coffee. It’s the brainchild of Scott Grenney from the One Plymouth community network and local business owner David Williams of Redrok. Already, a dozen outlets have signed up as participating stockists, including Theatre Royal Plymouth, Cap'n Jaspers and The Treasury. All are giving launch offers and discounts to encourage people to get involved. Other outlets such as Costa, Starbuck’s and the Plymouth University café are also offering discounts to people bringing their reusable cups – including the One Plymouth cup – as part of their coffee schemes. Among the employers supplying the cup is Citizen’s Advice Plymouth. Another is Bright’s Solicitors. David and Scott are now talking to all the big employers and sports clubs in the city and hope to announce more ‘big signings’ soon. Scott explained how the cup came about: “I was having coffee with David on the Barbican and we sat and watched everyone walk by with plastic cups in their hands. I went online and discovered that 2.5 billion coffee cups are thrown out in the UK every year because most of them aren’t recyclable, due to the polyethene lining and they’re singleuse! “Only one cup in 400 gets recycled. We ended up talking about it for two hours, just thinking about what we could do to help. I’m sure that other towns and cities will be following us, once they’ve seen how successful it is here. I knew it would take off, but it’s gone crazy. The first batch sold out within a few days and we’ve just had a load more made.” The cup retails at £8, which can be recouped quickly by buying the discounted drinks. The cup, which is made in the

UK and has a screwtop lid, can be used in a microwave and dishwasher, is durable and designed to last. It’s BPA-free, which means it’s non-toxic. Crucially, it’s 100% recyclable. And, for each cup sold, 25p goes to the National Marine Aquarium (NMA) in Plymouth to support their marine conservation agenda. The One Plymouth cup started off blue to reflect the colour of the sea but will soon be available in a range of colours. They can only be bought at stockists, not online, so that people actually visit their local venues: “It’s great for businesses and it means being part of something bigger,” said Scott. “They’re also very publicly showing their corporate social responsibility and they get lots of publicity on the One Plymouth community social media channels. Everything about this is positive, which people realise. People love the idea.” The cups are supplied by David’s company, Redrok. There’s even the option for companies to have their logo on the cup, depending on how many they order. Information about participating outlets and how you can get involved is on the One Plymouth website. There’s also a group page on Facebook.

They have launched the free Babble App, after securing £100,000 worth of support from investor Raj Dhonota, a candidate in the first series of the BBC TV programme, The Apprentice. The support includes building the app and website and providing a marketing budget. Now, they have plans for a Babble App just for guys, too. Lana came up with the idea when she visited St Albans last year. She wanted to get her make up done professionally ahead of a function that evening – but she had no-one to ask for recommendations. “As soon as I got home I got cracking on the whiteboard,” said Lana. “I was at it for two days, there were notes and diagrams all over the place! It was when my dad saw it and said: ‘Can I invest in it?’ that I knew it could work. I spoke to Carly, as the technical expert, and we felt that the best way to do it was with a free app.” They put their pitch to Croydon-based Raj, who survived eight of the 12 weeks on The Apprentice. Within days, he came back with a “yes”. Raj Dhonota Finally, after all the prep work, Babble App was given a ‘soft launch’ in Plymouth in April. In the past few weeks, Lana and Carly have also created the app for other towns and cities – most of them in the South West, where women are finding it via word of mouth.
WOMEN AT WORK As the app launches across more towns and cities, women will be able to log onto the page for the town they’re visiting and ask local women for recommendations and tips – so no more problems finding a makeup salon! Carly explained: “The reason we had a soft launch in Plymouth was because we wanted to get some honest feedback on what people want and don’t want, what they like and don’t like. It’s not feminist or sexist in any way. It’s just women asking other women about things we like to talk about and tend to be interested in. And it’s a safe, friendly, non-judgmental environment to have those conversations.” Lana added: “We didn’t know what to expect when we did the soft launch, but we had a great response. Women are using it constantly. We hit 300 users in Plymouth within the first three weeks and we’re getting more every day.” According to Lana, the conversations are about “anything and everything.” She said: “We’ve had one woman ask where to go for the best carvery in Plymouth and we’ve had discussions about baby names. All we’ve seen is women supporting each other, so although it is moderated, so far, no moderation has been necessary,” she added. Where this live chat differs from other social media platforms is that users can’t search other users or message them directly, and there are no adverts. The only data that’s requested is your first name and your email address. Carly said: “Not everyone wants to chat like this on Facebook.” Babble App is certainly keeping both women busy. Lana has two young children – a three-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son. She works in the admin office at Bovisand
Holiday Park and is also a mature student at the University of Plymouth, currently in her second year of an English degree. Carly’s background is in tech and works for Plymouth-based video streaming company, Vualto. The next stage for Babble App is for the business to grow and attract further investment. Eventually, it will have moneymaking features so that it becomes profitable – but not yet. Because of the feedback they’ve received, Lana and Carly are already looking to create specific community Babbles within each location. Lana explained: “When I walked through the door on my first day at university, I virtually had a panic attack. So I think there is a demand for a Babble for smaller communities, such as the Uni.” They admit to feeling “a bit nervous” as they see the app growing. But they’re excited, too. Carly said: “We’re building something that’s good for us, moving forward, and it’s something that can help women by encouraging, supporting and inspiring.” And Lana added: “Our attitude is that if you have an idea, then why not run with it?” The business partners have entered the Virgin Media Voom Business Awards, and people can vote for them on their page, www.voom.virginmediabusiness.co.uk/ pitches/revolutionising-social-media-for-women. Babble App is available for iOS and Android – visit the app store and search for Babble App.

Eggbuckland Stores – the community shop that offers much more than groceries
Emma Gibbs
Story by Laura Joint Eggbuckland Stores is a local, independent shop with a difference. It re-unites lost cats with their owners; it provides a listening ear to customers who may not see anyone else that day; it offers shelter from the rain to youngsters on the way home from school; and it even has facilities for people unexpectedly ‘caught short’.

It’s like a village shop in the middle of a city, a community resource that offers a whole lot more than just groceries. For some local people, it’s a lifeline. But what makes Eggbuckland Stores even more different to your average local shop is the produce it sells. For the past 18 years, the store in St Edwards Gardens has been owned by Steve Tolman. He’s helped by his full-time manager, Emma Gibbs. When she suggested linking up with local producers and makers of ‘clean food’, he agreed it was a great idea. Which is why, alongside all the usual brands, you’ll also see milk and butter from Devon-based Underdown Dairy, fresh artisan loaves from Vicky’s Bread in Helston, gluten-free breads and cakes from Ladybird Bakery in Plymouth, Laydilay free range organic eggs from Buckfastleigh, seasonings from Cornish firm Nature Kitchen, Tom’s Pies from Clyst St Mary, Heron Valley fruit drinks from Loddiswell, Luscombe soft drinks from Buckfastleigh and Hogs Bottom jams and preserves from Lifton. “We are small people working with other small people to provide beautiful produce for our customers and help the local economy,” said Emma. “When all the supermarkets ran out of bread and milk during the snow, we had an uninterrupted supply of fresh
milk and bread because it didn’t have to travel hundreds of miles across the country to get here. “And here’s an interesting thing. Organic and healthy food doesn’t have to be expensive. The reason the produce is usually over-priced is the mark-up most of the big supermarkets put on them. We don’t do that.” There’s another story behind this story, because Emma changed her diet completely in 2015 after years of feeling unwell. Doctors couldn’t work Steve Tolman out what was wrong with her, so she did her own research and found that her poor health – which included stomach issues and almost constant exhaustion – was linked to what she was eating. She switched to eating ‘free from’ foods and organic produce where possible – and she hasn’t looked back. She also likes to cook from scratch using produce she can trace back to their origins. Emma felt that what was good for her could also be good for other people. So, when you walk into Eggbuckland Stores, yes, you’ll still find everything you’d expect to buy in a local shop, but the first thing you see is a row of healthy foods, local produce, vegan food and a range for customers with dietary needs. The key to success, says Emma, now lies with people supporting the shop. But with more and more competition from national chains increasingly opening up in local communities, surviving is tough. “There are policies about local regeneration, building sustainable communities, and reducing the carbon footprint of goods,” said Emma, “but in the real world, the policies don’t include any support from the authorities. They’re just words. “So it’s down to us to make a success of what we’re doing, while we’re up against national chains that don’t offer all the

other community benefits we do and don’t support local producers like we do. “Our regular customers love what we’re doing, there is a demand for it and the feedback has been very gratifying. If we can do well enough we can keep going, but we just need to get the word out.” Steve has reached retirement age and ideally would like to take a step back. An investor or buyer who shares the same values as the shop would guarantee its future. Otherwise, Emma hopes to be able to rent the shop from Steve. Losing it, she says, will leave a big hole: “We’re not just a shop, we’re a community shop. I live across the road, have done for 20 years, so I know the value of having somewhere you can pop in for some support. “We have a lot of older people in the area and vulnerable people. They ring us up when they need something or if they can’t get out, and we’ll deliver to them. Some people come in for a chat. Without us, they’d be lonely and isolated. It’s very much grass roots, but if you look at the bigger picture, loneliness is a massive issue. People not having support so are unable to live at home is a massive issue. I don’t know what they’d do if we closed.” And she added: “I just want to be able to take things forward, offering good food and good service and doing that with a human touch.” With the help of two part-time assistants, Eggbuckland Stores is open seven-days-a-week, 7am to 9pm on weekdays, 8am to 9pm on Saturdays and 9am to 7pm on Sundays.

What he didn’t know was how huge that demand was – and how the boys would want to be part of the action, too. Joe set up We Do Football in May 2017 as a way for girls to get into football. A year later, and hundreds of boys and girls are coming to sessions at venues in the city and in South East Cornwall. Joe, who coaches the Plymouth Argyle Under-14s Girls team, was responding to the lack of opportunities for girls to learn football: “There were no development centres in Plymouth,” he said. “Girls had to join a grass roots team or go to Argyle. “In terms of somewhere they could go for coaching and development, there was nothing. This has given girls that entry into football and the opportunity to then join one of the girls’ teams at Argyle or the local club in their part of Plymouth.” Ironically, We Do Football really took off after boys started to get involved: “At that first session, which we held at Brickfields, we had three coaches and two girls! We had to get the message out, so we got a website and a Facebook page. “But it was when boys heard about us and said ‘hey, we want to be part of this, too’ that the girls started coming in numbers. The boys spread the word for us and brought their sisters and schoolfriends along. “We had a three-year plan to get up to 50 children a week and we’re trebling that already.” We Do Football, which is affiliated to the Devon FA, now has nine experienced coaches and two assistants. The coaches have FA or UEFA coaching badges and the assistants are currently taking their badges. Joe is a UEFA B coach – the UEFA badge is higher than the FA qualification. All have undergone safeguarding checks for working with children, and several are First Aiders. The young footballers are coached in different age groups
SPORT MATTERS from 5-14, with boys and girls in the same groups apart from the older children. The coaching sessions take place at Plymouth Devils Speedway on Monday evenings, 6pm-7pm, and Stoke Damerel Community College (SDCC) on Tuesday evenings 6pm-7pm, with an extra hour afterwards for goalkeepers. A session also takes place at Looe Academy on Monday evenings at 6pm. Parents pay £4 a session on a pay-as-you-play basis. All of the sessions are about learning key skills – and having fun. Joe explained: “Our philosophy is fun coaching with no pressure. The boys and girls come along for coaching. It’s not all ‘team, team team, win, win, win’. For the first 15 minutes of the session, every child has a ball of their own so they’re comfortable with a football and learn ball skills. In that 15 minutes, they’ll get between 300 and 500 touches of the ball.” That’s followed by exercises incorporating ball control and the sessions end with a game. Speaking to us at a Tuesday evening session at SDCC, Joe said: “Tonight, we’ve got girls here who have never kicked a football before. That’s what we’re all about, providing opportunities for them to play the game.” Every Sunday at 10am, a four-team tournament is held at the speedway arena, where the players can put their skills into practice – but again, this is done with fun in mind, not pressure: “It’s a fantastic venue, with excellent facilities.” said Joe. “They had this disused area in the middle of the track, so I approached them about it and now it’s a football pitch. “When we had an all-day Easter Club there, parents came and dropped their kids off at 10am and they knew they’d be spending the day outdoors, in a safe environment. We had 40 children and it was great.” Joe and his coaches are now in demand from local schools,
Design
too. They run after-school clubs at Widewell and Thornbury primary schools and are hopeful this part of the We Do Football offering will grow. Joe has already been able to place some of the children with their local postcode teams and can flag up potential players of the future for Argyle’s male and female teams. But Joe stressed: “Don’t get me wrong, if we unearth some stars, that would be a bonus. But that’s not why we are doing this. It’s just about playing football.” We Do Football has invested in a set of portable floodlights, thanks to sponsors Causeway Alarms and Electrics. And, with a link up with Hoppys Sports of Plympton, all children get a free kit after four sessions. As for Joe, he’s loving his work. Originally from Burnley and a big fan of his home town club, he came to Plymouth when he joined the Royal Navy as soon as he left school. He played for the Royal Navy football team and still turns out occasionally for his local club, Millbridge FC. But his main focus now is in bringing We Do Football to more boys and girls: “It has snowballed much faster than I expected which is great, because it means more children are getting the opportunity to play football – and to have fun doing it.” Sessions take place all year round, including during school holidays. Visit the Facebook page or contact Joe for information.

Jolly Jacks - a special place in the heart of the community
Jolly Jacks, the award-winning bar, bistro and restuarant at Mayflower Marina is one of the most popular eateries in Plymouth. Jolly Jacks or 'JJs' as it's known to regulars, has become a much-loved part of the local scene with a friendly ambience that’s led to many friendships being formed among customers and staff. Joint owner Sally Baum said: "We are very much a community hub, a place where locals and people from much further afield can meet, chat, socialise and enjoy the friendly

and welcoming atmosphere," said Sally. "We like to see ourselves as one big family and it's fabulous to know that we are so popular with lots of regulars." Jolly Jacks, located in Richmond Walk, was established by Sally and her long-standing friend Sue Robson in 2010 despite people thinking they were mad to take it on - especially as they were taking a huge risk by relocating from Leicestershire and Wiltshire respectively. Sally said “I remember being in here refurbishing the place and people would come in and say ‘oh, it’ll never survive a winter’ but we never intended Jolly Jacks to be a marina bar; we always had a vision of it being much more than that, with something for everyone to enjoy.” “At first, we didn’t know a soul as we were so busy doing the place up. We were also finding out where to source quality produce and where to hire the best staff. We had less than a month to get everything done, so it was all hands on deck. It was a huge learning curve but we could see the potential and having both been in the restaurant industry pretty much all our lives, we knew what we were doing.” Sally added: “I think what we’ve created here is pretty unique. We wanted to turn it into the sort of place where we’d want to go ourselves, somewhere with a warm, friendly and relaxing atmosphere, with quality food and drink.
“It’s a really social place and a nice caring sort of place, too. You can dress up or you can come as you are, we welcome everyone.” Sally is hands-on at Jolly Jacks while Sue has moved to Portugal where she runs a similar waterfront eatery. But Sue is still very much involved handling all the behind-the-scenes administrative tasks. Getting involved with the local community is almost second nature for Sally and Sue. They currently sponsor the local Mayflower Offshore Rowing Club, and help raise funds for local good causes - such as Horizons, the sailing charity which is also based at Mayflower Marina. And for the past two years Jolly Jacks has laid on a special Christmas treat for people who are lonely or homeless. "We call it our Giving Back day," said Sally, "and it's lovely to see people having a good time and making new friends." The team at Jolly Jacks are celebrating its eighth anniversary with a brand new menu featuring many additions, particularly to the popular breakfast selections, plus more vegetarian dishes. The ever-popular steak burgers, beer-battered fish and home-made chips and home made pies continue to feature, as well as the daily specials and Sunday roasts. "Our success is very much down to the wonderful front of house and kitchen team we have at Jolly Jacks," added Sally, "They have something that you can't train, which is personality and character." The talented and hard-working kitchen brigade led by head chef Chris Scantlebury starts at 9am for the breakfast shift up to 11.30am. The main menu is from 12 noon and the food service doesn’t stop until 9pm. Chris has been head chef for five years and during that time has mentored a number of apprentices and kitchen porters - several of whom have progressed to become accomplished chefs themselves. Chris said: "It's been great to see the team develop and become more and more skilled as chefs. We work hard to provide our customers with excellent food, beautifully presented - whether it's breakfast, lunch or an evening meal." With nearly 1,000 positive reviews on the Trip Advisor website it's a philosophy which is clearly working well for Jolly Jacks. Visit the Jolly Jacks website and Facebook page for updates and information on upcoming events, including Father's Day on June 17 - make sure to book a table early - Plymouth Morris Men on June 23 and Flash Jack’s Sea Shanty with fish and chip (date tbc). It’s a great place to dine befpre the British Fireworks Championships in August while Plymouth Maids perform on August 23, Bookings for Graduation Week in September also being taken. Jolly Jacks welcomes families and dogs.

Menna’s marathon dream comes true - thanks to Foot Solutions Eggbuckland mum Menna Bingham had a dream to enter the London Marathon in memory of her daughter who died seven years ago. So she was thrilled when she heard in October that her application had been successful. However, there was one major obstacle - Menna has suffered for many years with osteoathritis in her feet and rheumatoid arthritis in her knees. “The condition is extremely painful, particularly in my toes and knees,” said Menna. “I was so pleased when my application to take part in the London Marathon was successful, but I knew that I would find it a real struggle because of the pain
I suffer,” she added. “I had run a couple of half marathons before, but I knew this would be a big challenge for me.” Menna, 58, had seen the Foot Solutions advertisements in the Plymouth Magazine and decided to visit the store in Royal Parade to see if they could offer any help or advice. “The staff were so helpful,” said Menna, “and undertook a thorough assessment of my feet and my posture.” This revealed that Menna had high arches in her feet and she was recommnded customised arch supports. She also purchased Saucony Running Shoes from Foot Solutions’ extensive range of stylish, comfortable footwear. “This has reduced the pain
Menna with her medal - and running shoes dramatically and also helped improve my balance and posture,” said Menna. “It meant I could run in the marathon knowing that I wouldn’t be in as much pain as usual.” She was able to join the tens of thousands of runners who took part in the London Marathon and battled through the heat to complete the course in exactly eight hours eight seconds. In the process she raised
around £2,000 for the Down’s Syndrome Association. “It was a fantastic experience, everyone was so encouraging, getting behind you when things got tough. And I know I couldn’t have done it without Foot Solutions.” For an appointment call Foot Solutions Plymouth or visit their store on Royal Parade in the city Centre.

Smoke on! The world-class Red Arrows will lead the Royal Air Force’s centenary involvement at this year’s RNAS Yeovilton International Air Day on Saturday July 7. The RAF has had the Red Arrows as its official aerobatic team for over half its lifespan. Flying their nine red-painted BAe Hawk T1 jet trainers, 2018’s Red Arrows are led by a new ‘Red 1’, Squadron Leader Martin Pert. The team’s all-action routine is sure to be an Air Day highlight once more, peaking with the Synchro Pair’s breath-taking crossing manoeuvres. Joining the RAF convoy are a pair of Supermarine Spitfires, from the Royal Air Force’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight based at RAF Coningsby. A landmark RAF type, the immortal Spitfire is among the most famous of WW2 fighters. Also inbound is Dakota III ZA947: the flight’s example of US manufacturer Douglas’ ubiquitous twin-engine transport aircraft. In its No. 233 Squadron D-Day markings, the BBMF Dakota adds further RAF100 flavour to the show.

Bring the noise! The Typhoon FGR4 will be showcasing the sharp end of the RAF. A true multirole combat aircraft, the Typhoon’s taskings include UK QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) duties, air-to-air combat, air policing and peace support. Demonstrating the type’s outstanding performance capability will be Flight Lieutenant Jim Peterson, this year’s RAF Typhoon Display Team pilot. The uniquely airworthy Bristol Sycamore will also be delivering some RAF100 zest to the show. Entering RAF service ahead of all other British-designed helicopters, the Sycamore was a real rotary pioneer. It was first flown in July 1947, barely two years after the end of WW2. Less than a dozen Sycamores now remain and this one, as the world’s only flyer, brings distinction and rarity to Air Day. Further RAF100 related aircraft participation will be announced in due course.

Wills, Trusts & Equity Release Most people will need at least one of these to make sure their assets are protected, that they pass in the quickest and most taxefficient manner to their dependents when the time comes and avoid them passing to recipients you would not have chosen. Assets are often tied up in bricks and mortar when they could be better used to pay care costs, help children get on to the property ladder or maybe just to give you a more comfortable retirement? I have been in the industry for 37 years and have a special interest in Estate Planning. I find too many people put off discussing these important areas, but this delay can leave their Estate exposed. I would like to offer you an initial meeting at no cost to you to outline the main uses of these areas, show how each of them could affect you personally and give you a chance to ask any questions that are important to you. I live locally, so please contact me to arrange a meeting in the comfort of your own home.

Are you dealing with the administration of a deceased person’s estate? Remember to protect yourself… The role of a Personal Representative is to administer a deceased person’s estate in accordance with their last Will, or if they died without a Will in accordance with the intestacy rule. As personal representative you have a duty to act in the best interests of the beneficiaries (that is the people who are to inherit under the Will or intestacy) in the manner in which you deal with the estate. However, by accepting the role you are also accepting a level of personal liability. It was recently found in the case of Harris v. HMRC 2018 that a Personal Representative who transferred the deceased’s estate to a beneficiary has been told he must pay the bill himself now that the beneficiary has vanished to Barbados and has been ordered to pay the outstanding tax Bill of £340,000. It is recommended that you do seek legal advice to ensure you are following the correct procedures and limiting any personal liability. Executors can take certain steps to protect themselves during an administration of an estate.
By placing Statutory Notices in the London Gazette and a newspaper, local to where the deceased lived, creditors of the deceased have a two month period in which they can notify the estate of any outstanding debt. If the creditors fail to do this within this period the Executors can then proceed freely, therefore protecting their position. A financial asset search can be submitted which is designed to identify dormant assets that have not been active in the previous two years. This search covers most financial institutions. Even if assets are subsequently found that the search did not reveal, the Personal Representatives can rely on the search results, therefore limiting any personal liability. Executors have a duty to ascertain all assets and liabilities in an estate and to distribute these appropriately to the correct beneficiaries. As part of that they have a duty to calculate and arrange to pay any Inheritance Tax that may be due. If incorrect information is provided to HMRC, penalties can be imposed upon the Executors. At
www.wolferstans.com 01752 663295 www.cornerstonevision.com
Wolferstans we can assist with the completion of all HMRC paperwork and settle the inheritance tax bill on behalf of the estate. Bankruptcy searches should be undertaken to see if the named beneficiary is subject to bankruptcy proceedings. If so, then the Personal Representatives have a responsibility to notify the Trustee in Bankruptcy of the inheritance due and, depending on the circumstances, pay the inheritance directly to the Trustee. There are often certain classes of disappointed beneficiaries who can bring a claim against the deceased’s estate under the Inheritance for Family and Dependants Act 1975. We can offer guidance in the event of a claim being made against the estate. At Wolferstans, we have a specialist team who can assist you should you require any help in dealing with the administration of an estate. Local exhibitions Until Dec 21 2018 PLYMOUTH - FROM DESTRUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION House of Fraser, Floor 5 Plymouth suffered greatly during World War II. The docks and naval base made it a target resulting in the almost total destruction of the city centre and the displacement of tens of thousands of Plymothians. The city we see today epitomises the ambition and vision of post war planning. This exhibition includes fascinating objects, images and footage from the collection of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the South West Film and Television Archive that explores the themes of destruction and reconstruction. A function that is the very basis of creativity, where one ideas leads to another and inspiration is fired through testing, experimenting, making and doing. Running alongside the University’s Degree Show, this exhibition brings together some of the finest alumni from the University of Plymouth’s School of Art, Design and Architecture, including artists, designers, filmmakers, illustrators, photographers and architects, who since graduating have built successful careers within their respective fields. From social enterprises to surfboard designs, hard-hitting social documentaries and memorable brand campaigns, come and see how creatives are changing the world. This exhibition is curated by the Rhizome Artists’ Collective for students and artists living and working in the community who wish to celebrate and share the visual experiences of their work.
Plymouth’s Open Air Cinema returns to city’s three waterside locations
Plymouth Arts Centre’s Open Air Cinema is returning for 2018, offering audiences the opportunity to enjoy their favourite films in a series of iconic locations. Since 2012, this much-loved feature on Plymouth’s summer calendar has visited spectacular sites across the waterfront city for a programme of film events through July, August and September. With a mix of blockbusters, cult classics and good old sing-alongs, the films are carefully chosen to suit their unique locations, and dressing up is encouraged! In 2017, audiences were thrilled by sold out screenings of Jaws at the iconic Tinside Lido while Pink Ladies and T-Birds gathered for Grease at Mount Edgcumbe, a country park by the sea. Superhero fans also descended on Royal William Yard to enjoy blockbuster hit Wonder Woman. Plymouth Arts Centre will be returning to all three locations again this year. A second weekend at Tinside Lido will make this their biggest summer of Open Air Cinema yet. Dates confirmed for 2018: Tinside Lido: July 20, 21 and 22; August 24, 25 and 26 Mount Edgcumbe: August 17 and 18 Royal William Yard: September 13, 14 and 15

‘Feathered Friends’ exhibition at Host Galleries Host Galleries in the city centre have two major exhibitions during June and July. The prestigious gallery in Whimple Street will feature the work of Amy Louise, entitled ‘Feathered Friends and their Companions’ between June 2 and June 17. It will be Amy’s first solo exhibition in the UK. The vibrant colours of the feathered characters stand out against the neutral backgrounds and it promises to be an eye-catching occasion. The work of Totnes-based artist Leanne Christie will be exhibited from July 21 to August 4, with the artist in attendance on July 21 and 22. This show will see the launch of Leanne’s new ‘Singles’ collection. Now selling in many galleries nationwide and with a huge following in South Devon, it promises to be a very busy show. Anyone wishing to collect one of Leanne’s originals are advised to come early to view this stunning collection.

KITCHEN MATTERS From left to right: Nathan, Derinda and Simon
Join KF Kitchens as they cook up a very special 10th birthday party! Plymouth firm KF Kitchens have issued an open invitation to customers old and new to help them celebrate their 10th anniversary. It’s been quite a decade for the independent company, which was established in June 2008 by the three directors, Nathan and Derinda Damarell and Simon Rice. To celebrate the landmark, they’re hosting a special NEFF Cooking Day at their Plymouth showroom from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, 30 June – and everyone is welcome. Of all the changes they’ve seen in the industry in the past 10 years, they point to three that stand out: the affordability of induction hobs, Neff’s introduction of ‘slide and hide’ ovens and, the biggest development of all, the ability to create bespoke kitchens made to the customer’s specification, not the industry standard. “Kitchens today are designed specifically for the customer and how they live in that space,” said Derinda.
36\
The Plymouth Magazine June 2018
KF Kitchens have 25 fully working display kitchens in their spacious showroom at Faraday Mill Business Park, all boasting the very latest in design and technology: “The heart of the design of any kitchen is based on how you cook, so you need to see how the appliances work,” said Simon “that’s why we have all these working displays, so people not only learn about the appliances but also get a feel of the space.” Today’s trends include sleek, handle-less cupboards, curved edges, taps with boiling water, and hobs with built-in hoods – all of them in the showroom. But all this technology has led to an unforeseen issue. It seems many people aren’t getting the full benefit of what the new appliances offer, as Simon explained: “People tend to use the same settings because they’re not aware of all the things appliances can do now. If they come to the NEFF Cooking Day, we’ll show them how they can do things outside of their comfort zone. They’ll see the appliances in action and learn how they can get maximum use from them.” A NEFF home economist will be cooking between 10am and 4pm, giving a practical illustration of the latest range of NEFF slide-and-hide ovens, combination steam ovens and combination microwaves: “It’s going to be a fabulous day of celebration and we’d love as many people as possible to come along and be part of it,” said Derinda. “It’s very interactive and it’s a chance for people to ask us any questions they have.” Part of that interaction involves getting to taste the freshly-cooked food! The day incorporates KF Kitchens’ studio partner, German company, Häfele. At the time of writing, Derinda, Nathan and Simon were waiting to learn if they were successful in three Häfele national award nominations – for Best Showroom, Best Success Story and Best Studio Partner. The past 10 years has seen one five-star review after another for KF Kitchens. When it comes to quality and customer service, you don’t have to take their word for it – just check out the reviews page on their website and all the cards from happy customers that are on display in the showroom.
“Out of the 1,000 kitchens we’ve done in the past 10 years, we’ve had 140 ‘thank you’ cards,” said Nathan. “That’s an extremely high rate of gratitude for a level of service the customer should expect and something that we’re very proud of.” It’s not the only figure they’re proud of, because 70% of the firm’s business comes from recommendations or referrals: “Some of our customers have moved home and have been repeat customers, so we’ve done two kitchens for them,” said Simon. So, what’s the secret? It helps that between them, Derinda, Nathan and Simon have over 60 years of experience in the business. It also helps that they work alongside the same, trusted local tradesmen today as they did right at the start, such as Plymouth-based Mayflower Stone. And they’re respected for their role in the community, as sponsors of three junior sports clubs – Signal Box Frankfort AFC Under-11 Girls, Plymstock United Colts and Staddon Heights Golf Club Juniors. Nathan said: “We’re a local company, real people, working with other local companies that all share our passion for looking after our customers. We get a lot of feedback that our customers felt they were in safe hands. That is important because our customers are buying a project, not a product. It’s a journey and it’s our job to ensure they enjoy it.” The customer ‘journey’ includes home visits, design consultations, the decision-making process, installation and post-installation customer service. “It’s about ensuring due diligence all the way though the project,” said Nathan. “The decision-making is where our experience comes in, because a lot of customers don’t know what they want. They’re after some guidance and we let them tap into our knowledge. Within their budget, we tell them what would work best. Often, this involves things they hadn’t even considered. “And a kitchen needs to last for 10 years or more, so we don’t just design living spaces, we future-proof them.” For further peace of mind, KF Kitchens is a Local Authority Trading Standards-approved ‘Buy with Confidence’ company. All-in-all then, plenty to celebrate for Derinda, Nathan and Simon. Here’s to another 5-star decade at KF Kitchens!

BUSINESS MATTERS From left to right: Rhodri, Marjorie, Tony and Matt
Kitsons – the law firm with customers and community at its heart When philanthropist and entrepreneur William Kitson founded his law firm in 1826, he proclaimed that its aim was 'to provide an incomparable service for our customers, at an honest price'. Today, Kitsons is a progressive, modern firm of specialist solicitors – but that original message of almost 200 years ago remains the same. For the past 10 of its 192 years, Kitsons has been serving the people of Plymouth, having expanded from the founder’s home town of Torquay to cover other parts of Devon, too. Their first office in Plymouth in 2008 was on the Barbican but continual growth forced them to move to larger premises in North Hill. Then, almost exactly four years ago, they moved into their current Plymouth HQ in Ashleigh Way at Langage in Plympton. The Plymouth office has 21 staff – and is set to grow further this year, with the company looking to take on more solicitors. There's a reason for this success - and it all stems from those words of William Kitson, which placed people at the heart of the firm. In a survey carried out by an external agency, 99% of clients that took part rated Kitsons’ service as good or excellent – and the score rose to just under 100% for speaking plain language. Nearly three-quarters of the company’s work is repeat business, and 97% of those surveyed said they would recommend Kitsons to other people. Partner Matt Bryant says this is down to how they treat people: “It’s about building relationships with our clients, listening to them, and talking in plain language so they can understand and make informed decisions. Our customers are people, not commodities.” Joint managing partner, Rhodri Davey, points out that the company’s history counted for nothing when they opened the office in Plymouth: “When you move into a new area, you are relying on the service you offer, not the name or history of the firm. Success is entirely down to ensuring customer satisfaction.”
38\
The Plymouth Magazine June 2018
Kitsons are listed in Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners, which means they’re recognised as among the best, most trusted law firms in the country. Having a happy team helps. The external survey didn’t just ask clients how they felt, it also asked staff – and 99% said Kitsons were good people to work with. One of the partners in Plymouth, Tony Hunt, explains: “Our vision is to be the law firm of choice for both our clients and our people. “By having the best people, and people who are happy, you are able to provide a truly outstanding client service. And clients pick up on the relaxed, happy atmosphere, which is important when you consider that most people visit us for a serious reason. “We are an Investor in People business and their most recent review of us was glowing,” he added. “People who work with us are all treated the same and they are given every opportunity to develop. We have someone who started at the age of 17 and they’re about to study for their legal executive exam.” Kitsons isn’t a typical law firm. It focuses on several specialisms – Family, Employment Law for businesses, Residential Conveyancing, Commercial Property, Private Clients needing help with wills and probate, and Continuing Health Care. This latter specialism is a growing area and Kitsons have a team of accredited solicitors for the elderly. Marjorie Creek, who heads the team, is a former nurse: “Continuing health, financial abuse and safeguarding assets are increasing issues,” she said. “We work alongside safeguarding agencies to make sure people get the trusted advice that they need. And it’s more than offering advice – we are an advocate for you and your

rights. When people come to see us, often they are in a state of meltdown. Our job is to listen and to clear things up so that they can move from a bad place to a better place. It’s not an ordinary job. We do this because we care about people, and that might sound a bit cheesy, but it’s true.” Kitsons is also a dementia-friendly company, with every member of staff receiving dementia awareness training. The philanthropic values that have always underpinned Kitsons’ work can be seen in the volume of charity fundraising and voluntary work that staff do throughout the year. Causes Mary Smith on reception that benefit include Children’s Hospice South West, The British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK and the Devon-based prostate cancer charity, The Chestnut Appeal. Many of the Plymouth team are also actively involved as board or trust members of local organisations such as Plymouth Round Table, the Plymouth Academy Trust and the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team. The firm also sponsors local sports teams, including Plymouth Albion, Ivybridge Rugby Club and the Hooe Rovers U-18 women’s football team in Plymstock. With a proud past, Kitsons are now looking to the future in Plymouth. Rhodri revealed: "We plan to double the size of our presence in the city within the next five years.” It looks like they’ll have plenty to celebrate when the firm turns 200 in eight years’ time!

A new estate agents has opened in Plymouth - and the family team behind it are promising to go the extra mile for their customers. Halford & Homes has opened in Weston Park Road, Peverell and offer homeowners affordable packages with no hidden extras and a determination to provide the best possible service to customers. Director James Halford, who grew up in Peverell, has more than 13 years' experience working in the Plymouth area, specialising in sales, lettings, auctions and property management. James has previously worked for corporate and independent companies and believes that now is the perfect time to launch an estate agency. James said: "While working in estate agency I have seen a huge shift in the market place: the industry now has a demand for good quality service from local people with competitive fees. "I believe the property market in Plymouth has been very positive over the last few years, compared with other parts of the country. "Providing they are sensibly priced, properties coming onto the market are often selling within days, sometimes within hours," he said. "Although there is more demand than supply at the moment, I still believe that there are plenty of homeowners in the area who are looking to move." Halford & Homes offer two bespoke packages for people looking to sell their home. The first is priced from £720 including VAT and consists of valuation, photos, floor plans and all advertising required, but requires customers to handle viewing and sales progression themselves, with the support of the Halford & Homes team. The second service is based on the traditional full estate agency approach with Halford & Homes marketing the property, providing accompanied viewings and comprehensive sales progression. This is charged at 0.9 per cent plus VAT. The company also provides a flexible lettings service,
PROPERTY MATTERS again dependant on the requirements of the landlord. They can provide both a tenant find or fully managed service with landlord fees starting from £300 including VAT and management fee of 8 per cent plus VAT. The company is approved by the Property Ombudsman and all its properties are advertised with Right Move, the UK's largest online property portal, Halford & Homes website and all social media including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The team at Halford & Homes not only has extensive experience, but also a strong family emphasis. Manager Helen Heys has 16 years experience in sales, lettings and auctions, customer service and sales progression. Helen and James have known each other for many years, having worked together for another company in the past. Helen said: "We've both worked for large agencies in the past and it's all about targets and performance, not necessarily customer care. We want to be different and will go out of our way to ensure customers feel valued and find the home of their dreams. "For example, if one of our customers has a potential buyer, if necessary we will arrange for a builder or other professional to accompany them on a viewing to advise on any works

which may be needed. "Likewise, with lettings we make sure that new tenants are settled in with the minimum of fuss. It's often at the start of a tenancy when problems can occur around issues such as meter readings and where all utilities are located. We make sure that we help new tenants with this - which in turn helps our landlords." James' mum Pauline Halford, who has extensive experience in the property market, will be the company's senior administrator while his and cousin Lisa Hockley will work part time assisting with viewings. Teresa Collings, James' mother-in-law will also help with viewings while the team line up is completed by family friend Anne Gough. James is particularly pleased with the location of the new company, close to Hyde Park in Weston Park Road. "Lots of people walk by the branch every day and they are happy to drop in for a chat." Halford & Homes will work in association with SWLaw Solicitors in Ivybridge, who will provide legal and conveyancing services and financial advice for customers if required.

Taking the right steps to better foot health with City Centre Chiropody Since graduating with a BSc Hons in Podiatric Medicine in 2001, Karen Scowcroft, the owner of City Centre Chiropody, has successfully treated thousands of patients. At their spacious, Royal Parade clinic, she and her team of HCPC registered podiatrists regularly help patients suffering from common ailments like hard and cracked skin; ingrown toenails and fungal nails; bunions and corns. High-risk patients, like those who also have diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis, receive specialist care appropriate to their conditions. “We treat the whole person, not just the problem they have with their feet,” said Karen. “Often the presenting ailment has an underlying cause, so as well as aiming to reduce pain and discomfort in the short term, we look for those causes and prescribe further treatment to improve long term foot health.” Karen added: “The way we stand and walk can have knock on effects to knee, hip and back pain which we are able to assess with often surprising results to our patients.” Each patient at the clinic has a thirty-minute screening, including a full medical history, current medications, pulse check and nerve check. “People often remark that they have not had pulse or nerve checks before,” said Karen, “but these are very important. It’s not unusual for us to detect heart related conditions at this stage. If we do,

we make a referral to the patient’s GP.” Following the screening, simple conditions such as hard skin, calluses and corns are treated immediately. “Quite often, these can be a result of the footwear or the way people walk,” said Karen, “so we make a point of advising our clients on these causes to reduce or eliminate the need to come back.” Should the need arise, Karen’s team is qualified and experienced to be able to carry out a full biomechanical assessment during a further appointment. City Centre Chiropody is ideally placed upstairs from Foot Solutions store, which is a comfort shoe shop. Where appropriate, referrals are made to Foot Solutions with a prescription for further expert advice on appropriate fit and styles of shoes, often with long-lasting results. Correctly recommended footwear combined with City Centre Chiropody’s clinical expertise is a unique offering and patients travel from the far reaches of the region to take advantage of it. Karen’s team has grown to become the largest dedicated private podiatry clinic in the South West. Their city centre location has helped access but this growth is also due to the increasing pressures on the NHS. Karen explained: “We are seeing a lot of clients through our doors who cannot get free treatment or do not want to be placed on a very long waiting

list. Most patients know they have foot health problems and now see a visit to us as important as seeing their dentist”. Some of these ailments, particularly for those of us who consider ourselves otherwise healthy and active, are the kind of things we ‘just live with’. But really, we ignore them at our peril, said Karen. “Cracked heels will not heal on their own because the skin is too hard. This can lead to infection, which is harder to treat and may give rise to more complicated issues in your feet and lower limbs. Fungal nail infection too – it won’t go away, and it will only get worse until it’s treated.” Karen recommends that we get our foot health checked at least once a year, and bi-monthly for high risk patients. “Our aims are to reduce pain and discomfort; to improve gait and mobility; to provide information for patients to make choices; and to improve our patients’ overall quality of life. I consider it as important as having a regular dental check-up, and significantly helpful in promoting long term health.”

The Plymouth Magazine June 2018
Since 1985
Popular BBC TV and radio presenter Anita Rani has visited plenty of countries around the world and lots of locations in the UK - but she had never been to Plymouth until recently. She was in the city as the guest speaker at a special event at The Dome organised by Peter Goord Travel in association with Kuoni. Award-winning Kuoni are one of the world's top tour operators and Peter Goord Travel are the company's partner store for the South West. Anthony Goord said: "It was an opportunity to thank all our Kuoni clients in Plymouth and across the South West. Anita, who is an ambassador for Kuoni, took the opportunity to chat to every person who was there on the night. She was very approachable and charming." Forty-year-old Anita is best known as a presenter of BBC's popular Countryfile series and is also a regular on the One Show. She is also remembered for her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, where she partnered Gleb Savchenko to the semi final stage. She shared the story of her career in broadcasting with the 90 guests at the event - and said that her Strictly Come Dancing appearances had literally changed her life. Anita, who was born and raised in Bradford, is the daughter of a Hindu father and a Sikh mother. She developed an early interest in journalism, hosting her first show at the age of 14 on Sunrise Radio. She went to the University of Leeds, where she studied broadcasting. After leaving university, Rani worked as a researcher for the BBC and other organisations. After presenting a number of live shows on Channel Five she fronted The State We're In, a satirical programme on BBC Three. She also presented the first Poetry Slam on the same channel and was nominated as Best On Screen Personality at the Royal Television Society Midlands awards in 2005. Over the last decade she has been the presenter on a
wide range of programmes on both TV and radio, including Watchdog, Rogue Restaurants and India on Four Wheels. In an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? first broadcast on BBC One in 2015, Rani investigated the history of her maternal grandfather, learning more about his first wife and children, who died during the violence of the Partition of India in 1947. She has been involved in many travel-related shows and documentaries and admits that she has visited more countries than she can remember. "I travel so much with my work and have had the privilege of visiting some amazing places, not only overseas, but also here in the UK. Having grown up on the doorstep of the Yorkshire Moors I have to say that Dartmoor is one of my favourite places to visit. It's my first time in Plymouth - but I love the city." She said that her favourites countries - apart from England - were Japan, Columbia, Papua New Guinea and Ethiopia. Top of her 'bucket list' of countries not so far visited, is New Zealand. Her varied work includes a pilot episode for a potential new series on BBC2 called Wild Escapes which is due to be screened in late May. "The idea is that you embark on a 'mini adventure' within three hours of the UK by air and with a ticket price capped at £100. We ended up in the Dolomites for the first show and it was amazing." Anita was due to be involved in coverage of the Royal Wedding in May and has also recently been involved in a twopart programme on Bollywood - which inevitably included her in some dancing scenes.

PLYMOUTH MATTERS
Aquarium celebrates 20th anniversary with a programme of special events In celebration of its 20th birthday, the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth is holding a series of special events to commemorate its work and inspire new audiences about the oceans and their importance for a healthy planet. As the largest aquarium in the UK, the NMA welcomes more than 300,000 people every year. Plymouth has been home to an aquarium since 1888. Initially housed at the Marine Biological Association, a new and much larger aquarium was built at the current site in the Barbican district of the city in 1997, designated the National Marine Aquarium. Leading the way, the NMA was the first aquarium in the UK to be run as a separate charity solely dedicated to education and conservation of the marine environment. It has been 20 years since the Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the NMA in 1988, since then, it has been instrumental in connecting people with our oceans and promoting pro-ocean behaviour. The birthday celebrations are already underway with 20 beach cleans taking place across Devon’s beaches, one for every year the Aquarium has been open. The NMA will also be hosting many special events over the next few months including, birthday boat trips to explore the Plymouth Sound, an extra special Sleeping with Sharks Sleepover event and a free family night, with celebrations culminating on July 24 – the NMA’s official birthday day. Roger Maslin, chief executive of the National Marine Aquarium, said: “2018 is a special year for the NMA as we celebrate 20 years of marine conservation and education. “We are extremely proud of the contribution we have made to raising awareness of ocean conservation but more importantly how we can all work together to create healthier oceans for the benefit and enjoyment of all. The oceans are

vitally important to the health of our planet; they spawned life around 3.8 billion years ago and have been sustaining life ever since. It is everyone’s responsibility to safeguard them for future generations. “We have lots of public activities for visitors to help us celebrate - the launch of our new boat trips and beach cleans provide the ideal opportunity to get involved, with celebrations culminating with a series of special birthday events. The introduction of our new membership programme will also enable visitors to help support our mission to connect us with our oceans and promote proocean behaviour.” “We are delighted to be inviting visitors to join us to help celebrate our special year. We have lots of exciting activities for visitors to get involved with to learn more about the Aquarium and our work to protect our oceans – as well as having some fun!” The full list of birthday events are: May 26 to June 3: 20 Years of the NMA – Over the May half term, the NMA will be looking back over the last 20 years and celebrating some of its key achievements June 1: Big Birthday Sleeping with Sharks Sleepover – Join the team for an extra special birthday sleepover June 30: Birthday Family Evening – The Aquarium will be open to the public for free to get involved with plenty of fun birthday activities July 20: Friends of the NMA – Partners, sponsors and local businesses are invited to experience the Aquarium after dark July 24: Official Birthday Day! As an educational and marine conservation charity, the NMA relies on visitor funds and donations to continue its mission to connect the community with the world’s oceans. GARDENING MATTERS By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre Colour up your patio or front door this summer, with these beautiful and striking pot and plant recipes that we’ve created. We frequently get asked a lot by our customers about which plants to grow together in pots and what colours go well together. It’s a difficult question to answer, as it’s subjective and down to personal taste, but as a general rule of thumb I always suggest using colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel, for a blending, colour co-ordinated display. For example, pinks, purples and whites always look great together, while reds, oranges, and yellows always work well. For a more contrasting look, colours opposite each other on the colour wheel, complement each other. For example, oranges and purples bring out the best in each other, as do yellows and blues and reds and greens. Just follow these simple recipes, for a fantastic display all summer long.
Pink Gin Pots

patio for those midsummer cocktail parties. The large bowls contains Scabious Pink mist, Oxalis Red Leaf, a pink Osteospermum and a Pink Callibrachoa. The medium sized bowl is planted up with a pink Geranium, a purple Verbena, and a pink Surfinia. The small bowl is planted up with a dark Purple Osteospermum. These colours complement each other and work well as a theme. The dark purple leaf colour is picked up beautifully by the dark purple of the calibrachoa.
Lime Margarita
These lime green bowls are zingy, fresh and vibrant. They will brighten up any areas. The large bowl contains a yellow Abutilon, Heuchera Bright and Breezy, Oxalis Burgundy, Bidens and a yellow Calibrachoa. The medium pot contains Hosta Wide Brim, Lysimachia Aurea and Bidens. The smallest bowl is planted up with a yellow trailing Begonia and Lysimachia Outback Sunset. These bowls are the perfect size and shape for growing Hostas in. They are raised off of the floor, so are less likely to be munched by slugs and snails. For added protection, a strip of copper tape can be applied just under the rim of the pot.

PRIDE & JOY The Home and Garden Maintenance Team planted in these pots are sun lovers, and will love baking in your, warmest, sunniest spot. In the largest cube, there is a Trachelospermum Jasminoides climbing up an obelisk, under planted with scented Dianthus and trailing Phlox. The medium terracotta pot is planted up with French Lavender and some trailing Pelargoniums. The smallest terracotta pot contains a scented leaf Geranium and a trailing Pelargonium. Not only can you enjoy the beautiful flowers and scents, but the pollinating insects will love them too.
Patriotic Pots
With the recent Royal Wedding and the upcoming World Cup, plant up a few pots for your front door in patriotic red, white and blue. We have chosen a blue glazed Heritage pot and planted it with a blue Platycodon, red and white Dianthus and blue and white Calibrachoa. All of these recipes were planted using tub and basket compost, and had slow release fertiliser added to the compost for a prolonged display. Deadhead them regularly and they will continue to flower into early autumn.
