Breast screening recall fails cancer patients

In a speech to the House of Commons earlier this month, the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt admitted that 450,000 women aged 68-71 have failed to receive invitations for breast screening since 2009, Frances Morgan and as a result, computer modelling has suggested that between 135-270 women may have had their lives shortened, or have even died. Of the 450,000 women affected, 309,000 are still alive and in their 70s.

Mr Hunt has announced an independent review and apologised “wholeheartedly” to the women and their families. He said oversight of the NHS screening programme had “not been good enough”.

Breast cancer screening is currently offered once every three years to women aged 50 to 70 in England. However, due to a computer algorithm failure, women approaching their 71st birthday were not sent an invitation for a final breast scan as they should have been, and this will affect women in the age 70-79 age bracket. All women affected will now be contacted by letter by the end of May 2018 and those under 72 will receive an appointment for a catch-up mammogram.

Women aged over 72 can contact a helpline to talk through the pros and cons of having breast screening as scans in older women sometimes pick up cancers which do not require treatment, and any woman who wants a mammogram will get one within six months, Mr Hunt said.

One in nine women will develop breast cancer, and it is more common in women over the age of 50 years. The NHS Breast

Screening Programme in England was set up in 1988, and provides 3-yearly routine breast screening to women. Breast screening uses mammography radiography to detect small changes in the breast before other symptoms or signs of breast cancer. Breast screening detects about 30% of breast cancers and is estimated to save 1300 lives per year in the UK. If breast cancer is found at an early stage, there is an increased chance of breast-conserving surgery and a better prognosis of long-term survival.

However, breast screening carries risks too: false-positive mammograms can lead to unnecessary further investigations; women can be falsely reassured due to missed cancer and incorrect diagnosis, and many women report pain and discomfort due to mammography. Other unintended outcomes can include psychological distress, such as anxiety or uncertainty, for example following a false-positive result, and radiation exposure, which may increase the risk of breast cancer.

Clearly there are pros and cons to breast screening and a balance must be struck when weighing up the benefits and risks, but what is undeniable is that failure of the NHS to offer an invitation for screening has denied a large number of women the opportunity to make this choice.

Plymouth people are the happiest!

A press release arrived in my inbox a few days ago which revealed that Plymouth has been voted the happiest city in the UK. The results of a survey by Boundless, a membership club for people who want to get the most out of their free time, showed that more than eight of ten people in Plymouth were happy in life - with more than one in five saying they were ‘very happy.’

That put Plymouth top of the happiness table ahead of Liverpool and Edinburgh - and streets ahead of Southampton where only 56 per cent of respondents said they were happy in life.

The research by Boundless which has over 200,000 members - aimed to uncover the secrets to happiness by finding out who is happy, both at home and at work and what makes them feel good about themselves and their lives.

Plymouth came top in terms of overall happiness, but was also second when it came to being happy at work - with more than two out of three saying they were.

Well, it just confirms what we have felt about Plymouth since moving here 18 years ago. It’s got so much going for it, yet somehow Plymouth never gets the credit it deserves.

Let’s hope this research will encourage everyone in the city to feel happier in life.

Sophie sets her sights high for Makers HQ Plymouth College of Art and Millfields Trust have appointed Sophie Glover as the studio manager for an ambitious new venture called Makers HQ. It is a unique and visionary community interest company created to provide sampling facilities to the fashion industry and emerging designers, with a strong focus on achieving ethical, British manufacture.

Sophie has a BSc in clothing product development from Manchester Metropolitan University, and has worked as senior technologist at TopShop, head of the Technical Department at ASOS, and head of garment technology at Finery London. She has also worked for big-name brands including GAP and M&S. During a career in fashion that has taken her all around the world, from Europe and North Africa to China, Morocco and Tunisia, Sophie has been involved in the manufacture of garments worn by fashion icons including Kate Middleton, Michelle Obama and Kate Moss. She has been interviewed by the BBC and Financial Times as an authority on UK fashion manufacturing.

Sophie completed a PCGE teaching qualification during her time at Finery London, acquiring invaluable skills that will help in her mission to reignite the fashion sector within the South West and use Makers HQ as a platform to increase fashion and textiles training and employment opportunities within the region.

Sophie said: “I was born in Brixham and always intended to return to the South West eventually, so I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to come back with so much experience of the fashion and textile industries, so that I can share the things that I feel most passionately about, with a part of the world that I love so much.

“I have a huge amount of experience that will help me to ensure that Makers HQ is a success. From my role as head of the technical department at ASOS, managing around 30 garment technologists and around 60 people in our quality control department, to specialising in denim at Topshop’s

head office and even setting up fashion brands from scratch, I’ve specialised in clothing product development and textile manufacture my whole life.

“My intention for Makers HQ is that we’re going to offer a commercially-viable, functioning sampling unit, alongside education and training facilities that can help to reinvigorate the fashion industry in the South West.

"My first priority will be to make a success of the sampling unit, which at its simplest level is here to support anybody interested in starting their own clothing brand. To do that you’d need a range of samples to take out to wholesalers and show to clients, essentially to allow them to make a choice about whether to stock your collection or not. And we’ll help to create those samples.

“More than anything, I want the local community to know that Makers HQ is now a resource for them to use, and that we’re here to support the growth of their businesses.”

A joint venture from Plymouth College of Art and Millfields Trust, establishing Makers HQ was made possible through £184,000 of funding from Power to Change, the independent trust supporting community businesses in England, and £96,000 from Plymouth City Council’s Social Enterprise Investment Fund.

The city of Plymouth has a rich heritage in fashion and textile manufacture, with the Millfields Trust HQ building on Union Street formerly acting as home to the Jaeger clothing factory, until its closure in 1997.

Plymouth College of Art and Millfields Trust hope that Makers HQ will help to re-establish the city’s historical links to the fashion industry.

Makers HQ will bring together academic institutions, businesses, designers, makers and members of the local community to create a sustainable and innovative new business model for the fashion and textiles sector in Plymouth.

The company aims to drive community regeneration, initially within the Stonehouse area, through job creation, increased retention of highly-skilled graduates and training opportunities.

Life’s a beach for Laura as demand for her eco art soars

Plymouth eco artist Laura Edmunds arrives at the little beach down from the Hoe Promenade and her eyes immediately light up. She heads off in different directions – often in mid-sentence – scooping up pieces of sea glass here, bits of plastic there, and lots of other stuff inbetween.

“No beach is safe!” she says, as she picks up what’s left of an old paint brush: “That’ll come in handy.” And then a small piece of red plastic: “This will make a brilliant sail for a boat. I try not to look a gift horse in the mouth.”

It’s the first time she has scoured the beach below the Coffee Shack, and it’s just become one of her new favourite places.

Laura, from Plympton, set up her Serendipity Sea Crafts business in 2016, making unique artwork from things she’s collected from beaches. At the time, she was still working as a primary school teacher but last year, she took the plunge. After 17 years as a teacher, she became a supply teacher so she could spend more time as an artist – and she’s loving every minute of it.

“I go to the beach a couple times a week, in all weathers, and although it’s lovely on a nice day, I actually prefer it after a big storm because you can find some amazing things on the beach then.”

Her work is now sold at 10 galleries in towns and villages

across Devon and Cornwall – Padstow, St Ives, Polperro, Mousehole and Porthleven among them.

In Plymouth, you’ll find her art at Rockpool Trading in The House That Jack Built in Southside Street, where shop owner Helen Woolley gave Laura her first big break: “Rockpool was the first place that sold my work,” said Laura, “and Helen has been an ambassador for me, really supportive.”

The focus of Laura’s artwork has changed in the past 12 months. She started off doing pictures of birds and although they still feature in her work, she is now doing scenes that reflect real places: “I love doing special commissions for people,” explains Laura, “but I’m very busy at the moment, supplying the shops and galleries – especially in Cornwall – because the pieces are in such demand.”

It explains her frequent visits to the beach to find more material.

This trip to the Hoe didn’t disappoint. Items collected in the space of a few minutes included a shoe sole, a bright green piece of plastic, some ceramic, the top of a drinks can, lots of glass of various colours and a wooden lolly stick: “The last time I found one of these, I used it as a pathway for a St Michael’s Mount picture.

“I like bits of strange rubbish because I can use them differently, like tooth brushes.

They make good props for birds to stand on. And I find loads of circuit boards for some reason.

What I really like is glass with writing on. People love seeing remnants of writing. It hints at a

WOMEN AT WORK story. Around here, we find a lot of glass from Plymouth Gin.” The Hoe beach came up trumps. One of the first things she found was a fragment of sea glass with a letter on it. Brown glass for birds’ beaks and white glass for the sea were also eagerly gathered up, together with several pieces of green glass: “I can never have too much green glass, I use it for grass and leaves.” There’s even some turquoise glass – a rare find that will be used in one of Laura’s new pieces.

Collecting items for her art also taps into another of Laura’s passions – archaeology: “It’s fascinating, seeing the differences in the pebbles and rocks. To be able to combine that with art is fantastic.”

But Laura isn’t just making eco art. She’s also cleaning beaches at the same time: “Any rubbish that I can use is cleaned thoroughly before I use it. Any rubbish I can’t use, I pick up and recycle. And friends clean beaches as well and drop things in to me.” This element of her work earned her a nomination in the final of the Green Business Category in this year’s Venus Awards for businesswomen.

Laura sometimes has the assistance of a couple of helpers

on her beach cleans – her husband and daughter. “You soon get your eye in and learn where to find things. The most interesting finds are usually in among the smaller pebbles or in nooks and crannies and corners, such as here today.”

There was another unexpected ‘find’, too – a new seascape to create. The view from the beach has a different perspective to the one higher up: “I’m going to recreate it, from Drake’s Island, across the Sound to the Breakwater.”

And using pieces collected from the beach that offers that view will make the picture even more special.

CHARITY MATTERS Paul Cox

The Shark Trust – the global charity that feels right at home in Britain’s Ocean City Tucked away in an office in The Millfields, a small charity is making big waves in global marine conservation.

The Shark Trust is working with other conservation organisations around the world to influence governments to take positive action to help safeguard sharks and rays.

This year, the Trust turns 21, and it can certainly claim to have come of age. And yet, despite its global impact, many people don’t realise the charity is based here in Plymouth.

“It feels right that we should be here, in Britain’s Ocean City,” said managing director Paul Cox. “But it could be argued that we are the city’s best kept secret. People tend to assume that because we do work on a global scale, we must be based in London or somewhere else.”

In its early years, the Shark Trust focused its work on UK shark issues before widening its sphere. As a founder member of the Shark Alliance, it successfully campaigned for the introduction of the European Community’s Plan of Action for Sharks and for the strengthening of the European Finning Ban. Then, two years ago, the Trust and its international conservation partners launched a global strategy plan for sharks and rays: “The strategy has really upped our influence

and that’s had a knock-on effect on our ability to tap into more funding,” said Paul, who heads a team of seven.

The biggest threat to sharks is unmanaged and unsustainable fishing in some parts of the world, notably the Atlantic. It was in response to this threat that the Trust launched its latest campaign, No Limits? The campaign centres on Blue Sharks and Shortfin Mako Sharks – Makos are the fastest swimming sharks in the ocean, but not even they are fast enough to evade fishing nets.

A major part of the Shark Trust’s work is to raise awareness and gather support from the public – and they have just taken on board a very special ‘helper’ in their No Limits? campaign.

Meet Mako, the shark built just like a Formula 1 racing car.

The Shark Trust Carbon Mako is a one-off sculpture made specially for the charity by renowned international sculptor, shark supporter and former F1 engineer, Alastair Gibson.

The body is constructed of carbon fibre twill and given a F1 makeover with the Shark Trust colours in the Mercedes Paint Shop. The nostrils are made using Honda F1 parts and the eyes from modified fuel tank flap plugs. The mounting, meanwhile, is made with the torsion bar from the rear suspension of a Force India F1 car.

Alastair, whose studio is in Brackley, grew to love marine

wildlife as a boy in South Africa. A Alastair Gibson talented sculptor, he decided instead to become an engineer and worked in England as a F1 chief mechanic for Benetton, BAR and Honda. Finally, he returned to his other passion – engineering-inspired sculpture. When Britain’s former World Champion Jenson Button retired, Alastair presented him with a carbon sculpture of a Manta Ray. So how did this collaboration come about? Alastair explained: “I have a great passion for my relationship with sharks and for me, to put something back into this relationship is really important. If I can in a little way influence what people do with the ocean and try and look at it through my love for sharks, then it would be a great thing to play my part.”

Paul added: “Alastair has a lifelong love of sharks and he knows the challenges they face. He’s a big supporter of the Shark Trust and last year, he said he wanted to do something for us. His limited-edition pieces sell for £17,500 so we’re hoping this one-off will sell for much more when we auction it next year.”

Before being auctioned off, The Shark Trust Carbon Mako will be touring aquariums, art exhibitions and other venues – hopefully culminating with the 2019 British Grand Prix.

“We’re using the sculpture to reach different audiences and potential new supporters, and it’s having an impact straight away,” said Paul. “Just by putting photos on social media, it’s getting a great response.”

And, says Paul, the cause needs all the publicity it can get: “Sharks are stunning, charismatic creatures. There are over 1,000 different species and they come in all shapes and sizes.

“That’s beginning to change now, because the internet is helping to get the message out there. The younger generation totally understands the need for shark conservation and I think we’re also now seeing a more sympathetic view towards sharks from the wider population.

“We’re very keen to communicate positive messages, by showing people the beauty of sharks and talking about how amazing they are. They’re also vital for marine biodiversity. Our approach has always been very much rooted in science, in doing what is right in the long term for sharks – and that takes time.”

The charity’s work is made possible by fundraising and grants totalling around £350,000 a year. But the public’s support is more than just financial: “The public has a huge role to play because their vocal support helps to make solutions come to fruition.”

The story of the Shark Trust Carbon Mako sculpture is to be told in a short documentary film being made by Paul’s wife, Vikki – hopefully to be screened in the city next year.

Danielle’s paintings earn her a top award – and the royal seal of approval Story by Laura Joint

From losing her ‘dream job’ through redundancy, to becoming an internationally-known artist with royal and celebrity customers – it’s been a remarkable few years for Plymouth-born artist Danielle Davis. And 2018 is proving no different.

Danielle, who lives in Ivybridge and is best known as Danielle D, has just won the 2018 Fine Art Guild Up & Coming Artist Award. And to think, she had to be persuaded by family and friends to showcase her work to the public!

Danielle went to Plymouth High School for Girls and did her degree in Fine Arts at Plymouth University. It was while studying at Uni that she decided she wanted to work in the field of art therapy. But she found herself at a crossroads when she went back to work after maternity leave, only to be told there was no work.

“I was employed by Plymouth City Council, using art as therapy,” she explained. “I was based at the Reach Day Centre at Whitleigh, working with people with MS, stroke survivors in recovery, people diagnosed with terminal cancer, cerebral palsy, a whole range of conditions and disabilities.

“I loved that job and I loved the people. But when I tried to go back to work in August 2014, there were no clients and the place was being shut down because of huge cuts to

adult social care. It was very sad.”

Danielle still had to go into work during the redundancy process, even though there was no work to do: “I thought, ‘right, I’ll take my sketch pad in and do some drawing’ and this character came into my head. For some reason, it was a cow! I was in the unit, on my own a lot, and he was keeping me company, so I called him Buddy.”

And so the ‘star’ of her paintings was born. Buddy the cow has since been joined by a female character, Bo – “I wanted to introduce a love interest and Bo is my daughter’s middle name,” said Danielle. The sketches turned into paintings for her walls at home: “The next thing I know, family and friends are saying ‘oh I love that’ and someone said: ‘you should set up a Facebook page’. I laughed when they said that, but I did it and it just went crazy!”

The page now has over 6,000 fans, who Danielle enjoys ‘chatting’ with. It seems her fans – who fondly refer to her as DD – share her lighter take on life: “I’d rather have a laugh than a cry, and my paintings are definitely for people who like a bit of fun. A lot of people have said to me that it’s like putting a ray of sunshine on their wall. And people put them at the bottom of the stairs, so they see them every morning and it makes them smile.”

England rugby player Mike Tindall, discovered her work while browsing in a gallery in Cirencester: “They bought quite a few prints of my work and then Zara saw the big original of ‘True Love Never Dies’. Apparently, she didn’t stop talking about it for the next three weeks, saying how much she liked it, so he went back and bought it for her as a surprise birthday present. How lovely is that?”

Another well-known customer is Michelin-starred chef, Tom Kerridge.

The painting that won Danielle the Up & Coming Award is called All Routes Lead To You: “I’m very specific with the titles of my work, because the title means a lot. All Routes Lead To You is a really simple concept and people just seem to get it. I think people relate to the themes as well as to the paintings.”

It’s Danielle’s second award at the Guild. Last year, she won the public-voted Best in Show at the exhibition at the Guild Gallery, with a painting called Where’s Bo? “Given that it’s a painting of a cow, I find it quite hilarious that the award is called Best in Show. It sounds like something you’d get at the Devon County Show!”

Danielle has an original style all of her own, and although she has changed how she works, she has been careful to retain that style: “At first I worked in oils but it’s impossible to be prolific because they take so long to dry. Now, I use mixed media, with spray, ink, pastel, oil and acrylic.”

She is now also creating porcelain sculptures of her characters and writing her first book, called Back to Bed Buddy.

And she does pieces for charity, including ‘fivers4artistic’ which supports talented young artists with autism.

Looking back, Danielle now describes her redundancy as a blessing in disguise: “It meant I was able to be with my daughter Daisy, right up until she started school. And she’ll be sitting next to me, doing her little thing whilst I’m working away at a piece.

“This wasn’t something that I just fell into, because I told myself I had to make it work,” she added. “But nobody is more shocked than me that is has worked. It’s bonkers, to be honest. I’m doing it for the love of it, and if I can make a career out of it, then that’s wonderful.”

Owners Charly Harding and Sarah Lock decided to open Harbourside Gluten Free at 12, The Barbican, just a few doors along from their main takeaway and restaurant, to remove any risk of cross-contamination.

And it seems they’ve done the right thing because the feedback has been overwhelming – and not just from customers with dietary requirements. People who’ve gone into the shop unaware that it’s a gluten-free zone have said they prefer the batter as it’s 'lighter and crispier'.

One of Sarah’s jobs is to sample the batter – and she’s in no doubt which she prefers: “I love the gluten-free batter, which is just as well because I eat it every day!”

Charly and Sarah opened their second shop in May, in response to a growing demand, and after speaking to some friends: “They have a young boy who has Coeliac Disease and he gets very sick if he eats anything with gluten,” said Sarah.

“They come in here now and say it’s the first time as a family that they’ve been able to share their food while eating out. A lot of fish and chip shops offer a gluten-free option, but because of the risk of cross-contamination, they’ve never felt able to share their food before.”

Among the first customers were Mark and Dennis, on business from Aberdeen: “I saw the gluten-free sign, which is why we came in,” said Mark. “My partner is coeliac and eating out is risky for her because of the fear of cross-contamination. We could do with a chippy like this where we live.

Two other customers at the same time agreed. Marie, who used to work in a fish and chip shop in Plymouth, said: “It’s much nicer, really crispy,” and Claire, on holiday from Northampton, said: “I prefer it, it’s definitely crispier.”

The feedback on the Facebook page is similarly glowing, especially from families affected by gluten intolerance. One customer wrote: “It actually makes my 14-year-old son want to come out with us!”

Charly believes they will eventually go 100% gluten-free at both shops: “This is the way to go. I think once people try it and see that the batter is even nicer, they will switch to it. I hope that’s the case.

“At the moment, there are some misconceptions about gluten-free food and it is slightly more expensive – although that might not always be the case. For now, we will have both shops, to offer people the choice.” The gluten-free fish is 10p or 15p more than at their traditional shop and restaurant.

The takeaway offers a delivery service by Deliveroo – and Charly says customers will notice a difference here, too: “It travels better and retains its crispiness for longer.”

The gluten-free shop is where the former Platters takeaway used to be. Work has been taking place on the exterior of the listed building and scaffolding will be up until the end of June.

Then, Charly and Sarah are expecting to be even busier.

Sarah opened the original Harbourside Fish and Chips on Southside Street in 2009, since then it has picked up several awards.

So, are the Great British public still in love with fish and chips? “You bet they are!” said Sarah. “If anything, fish and chips are even more popular now than ever. Maybe that’s because we’re by the sea. Whatever the reason, long may it continue!”

PUT YOUR HOME INTO A SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX

A good way to think of a lifetime trust is to think of it as a lawyer created “safety deposit box” into which you can place your home, savings, stocks and shares, life insurance and/or any other assets that you wish to keep safe as you go about your daily life.

Whilst in the box, you still have full use of the contents and can add to them, sell them, replace them, borrow from them or pass them down to your family as you wish. However, if a third party or outside body tries to claim them, they cannot get access and cannot force you to give them the key.

After your death, the safety deposit box (i.e. the trust) and its contents pass down to the beneficiaries that you have chosen to receive them and they can either carry on using the trust themselves, enjoying the same protection that you had, or they can bring it to an end and share the contents out.

The reason that a trust can safeguard your assets and property so effectively, is that the law regards the trust itself as a completely separate person to you and, if the property in which you live and the investments from which you receive an income are (in the eyes of the law) owned by someone other than you, it is very difficult for anyone to take them from you.

It is also important to note that trusts have been used for hundreds of years to safeguard assets and property and that they are used every day by banks, insurance companies, local authorities and even the government itself. This means that the only way to prevent them being used by ordinary people to protect their own assets and property is to completely rewrite the law.

Foot Solutions come to the rescue for oven man Neil Businessman Neil Thurston is no stranger to rescue situations. As the proprietor of Oven Rescue in Plymouth he spends his working day putting life back into tired ovens.

But when Neil began to suffer severe pain in his feet it was Foot Solutions who came to his rescue.

Neil said: “I have had problems with my feet for many, many years. I have had high arches for as long as I can remember so If I am on my feet for any length of time I experience real pain.”

In his work with Oven Rescue he is either on his feet or on his knees cleaning ovens most of the day. And by the end of the day Neil couldn’t wait to get home to take off his work boots and put on his slippers.

“I just had to put up with it,” added Neil, who has been the Oven Rescue franchisee in Plymouth for more than five years.

Prior to that he was a driving instructor for 10 years, after spending more than 20 years in the Navy.

“I used to get occasional problems with my feet in the Navy, but nothing as severe as during my work with

Oven Rescue.”

Everything changed when Neil was shopping in the city with his wife in Royal Parade.

“I saw the Foot Solutions shop and decided to go in and see if they could help,” said Neil.

After a thorough investigation of Neil’s feet it was confirmed that the high

arches were causing not only pain in his feet, but also his knees, hips and back.

Custom-made insoles were recommended and to help him cope during the time they were being specially made for him, Neil purchased off-the-shelf versions as a short-term solution.

“The off-the-shelf inserts certainly helped a lot but the custom-made arch

supports have transformed everything. I use them in my work boots all the time and I am completely free of pain as a result. And I use the off-the-shelf version in my other shoes.

“It has made a huge difference thanks to Foot Solutions,” added Neil.

MANAGING HOLIDAY CONTACT Associate Chartered Legal Executive Carrie Laws from The Family Law Company looks at ways of agreeing summer holiday arrangements for separated parents School will soon be finished for the summer and holidays are being planned.

This is sometimes a complicated process for parents who are separated – but it doesn’t need to be. Here are some tips to help take the pressure off.

Communication is key Always discuss your plans with the other parent to avoid the awkward situation of both booking holidays during the same dates. There is no hard and fast rule in terms of length of notice, but it is advisable to at least agree the dates a month or so in advance.

If it is likely that this will take some Carrie Laws negotiation, then begin the process sooner. If you are concerned about holiday arrangements and safety, you will need to air this with the other parent in advance in order that reassurance can be given, and safeguards put in place in plenty of time.

Share key information As a minimum, you should tell the other parent where you are going, where you will be staying and how you can be contacted in an emergency. It is advisable to share the dates and times of travel, but you do not need to share the minutiae of your holiday.

Agree your indirect contact during the holiday in advance and stick to it Children need to be able to have quality time with the parent taking them away. If the absent parent is constantly calling or texting, this is likely to cause anxiety in the children and heighten tensions between the parents during the holiday or on the return home. Rather than risk ruining the holiday for the children and damaging relations, agree when the indirect contact is going to take place beforehand, so each parent knows where they stand and stick to those arrangements (except for emergency situations).

What happens if arrangements cannot be agreed?

In this situation, a referral to mediation may enable you to reach an agreement.

If mediation isn’t successful, a parent can apply to the court for a ‘Specific Issue Order’, a court order that determines a specific set of facts and is limited to one narrow point.

The court will always have the child’s welfare as its paramount consideration and will always

make the order it feels is in the child’s best interests.

The court will rarely determine that a holiday is not in the child’s best interests.

However, there may be scenarios that give cause for concern – for example, if the destination is unsafe or outside of the Hague Convention, or there is very real concern that the parent will not return the child. Strict safeguards can be put in place and endorsed by the court.

The reality is that holidays and quality time spent with the other parent are usually good things for children. Any tricky issues will mainly be between the parents - and that is why communication is vital. These can usually be resolved, and any concerns allayed if aired and discussed in advance.

A land of contrasts that is India I’ve often heard it said that India offers an eclectic mix of culture and flavours but had not considered how to plan a visit. It was only when the opportunity arose to join a tour group the sheer size of the country came into focus.

India is about 13 times bigger than the UK and it quickly dawned on me that it would be impossible to see the whole country in a week. Wendy Wu offer award winning holidays to the whole of Asia and I was confident that their Golden Triangle of India Tour would give me the perfect introduction.

The temptation when writing about any touring experience is to rattle off a list of hotels, sights and experiences without taking a breath. Apart from being quite boring to read, doing so would destroy the sense of adventure. Instead I will focus on just one day, the penultimate of my trip….

I had slept like a log and the 5.30am alarm call came as a bit of a shock. Staying in different hotels every night can be quite disorientating and it took me a couple of minutes to spring into action.

I find it quite hard sometimes to get going in the mornings, but with the prospect of the Taj Mahal at sunrise awaiting I was down at reception first and raring to go.

Our hotel was only a five-minute drive to the entry gate and we had been assured that the early start would help to avoid the crowds and heat of the day. I was a little disappointed to see a large queue forming at the main entrance; not to worry our wonderful tour manager Vishal called us to one side, lifted a corner of the fence and ushered us through. Well this is India!

As you might expect with one of the Wonders of The World there were still security checks to clear, but we were ahead of the game and soon taking in the breath-taking Taj Mahal sparkling in the rising sunlight.

I have seen thousands of photographs over the years and I can honestly say none of them came close to replicating the sense of fulfilment I felt being there. That doesn’t stop you taking a ridiculous number of pictures and there’s always that iconic Lady Diana bench shot to replicate.

Top marks to anyone who spotted that I’m posing on the wrong bench. I suppose at least I’ve left myself with an excuse to go back one day.

Vishal painted a vivid picture with his tale of a heart broken Emperor, his cherished wife passing too soon, and the ultimate symbol of love lost. In truth he summed the experience up best by saying 'Taj is Taj' and I get it, there really is nothing to compare.

After breakfast back at our Agra hotel we set off for a visit to a charity project in Delhi called 'Project Arman' which focuses on the wellbeing and education of children from poor families. The bus ride took several hours and after such an early start I think all of us took the chance to close our eyes and rest.

There had been plenty of opportunity to take in all the sights and sounds of the Indian countryside over the past week and I felt confident nothing could surprise me, how wrong you can be.

We had been asked to bring along

TRAVEL MATTERS some books and pencils for the children, so armed with my Poundland supply of goodies, we made our way on foot through one of Delhi’s many slum areas. I have never experienced abject poverty and deprivation of this kind before.

I felt so uncomfortable intruding into this alien world of desperation, misery and despair.

I have visited staged orphanages and schools in many countries where in truth they are simply tourist traps designed to grab your heartstrings and grab your cash.

There was nothing staged about these streets, I was surrounded by utter hopelessness.

The school was situated down an alley between two shops and I use the terms school and shops extremely loosely. My first and enduring memory is the row upon row of tiny, wornout shoes which the 'pupils' leave at the door.

As I peered into the two classrooms, each no bigger than a box bedroom, dozens of bright eyes stared back. I felt distraught and my optimistic carrier bag of cheap stationery certainly wasn’t going to be changing these little lives.

We learned from the charity organiser that the children would probably be picking through rubbish tips if it weren’t for the haven of a few hours at school. At the end of the school day each child received a piece of fruit or a juice carton and I wondered if perhaps that was the only reason they were there at all.

Although I hardly felt in the mood, I had agreed to attend a Bollywood style theatre performance in the evening with some of the group. I’m embarrassed to say I was relieved to leave our school visit earlier than the rest of the group to get across town in time for the show.

The Kingdom of Dreams modestly proclaims itself as the ultimate entertainment and leisure destination. In a country of such extremes it certainly lives up to its billing and comparisons with the squalor of earlier was unavoidable.

Imagine a Donald Trump inspired Taj Mahal 2 and you’ll have the idea.

In front of us was a façade resembling an Indian styled casino with vast golden elephants arching their trunks to form the opulent entrance. It all seemed in rather poor taste, but with a deep breath we headed inside.

The foyer is themed on a boulevard of quaint shops, bars and restaurants complete with its very own luminous indoor sky. The actual theatre reminded me of one I visited at Radio City in New York a few years ago needless to say with the addition of copious amounts of gold-leaf.

Although the show was performed in Hindi I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Zangoora the Gypsy Prince is a simple pantomime style story of a virtuous prince falling on hard times only to win in the end. The actual spectacle was mesmerising with the traditional head slide dancing almost lost in an extravagant laser and light show.

In the interval I was approached by a young Indian couple who were fascinated to know how, as an English speaker, I was enjoying the show? They asked in passing if I knew a little town in England where their brothers were studying politics.

Yes…… I had heard of Plymouth!

India certainly delivered a rollercoaster ride of emotions and for me that is the beauty of the country. I believe travel should be about adventure and discovery; did I mention the tigers…….

Plymouth has a fantastic, modern business centre, right in the heart of the city. The Genesis building, on Union Street, is seen by thousands of passing motorists and pedestrians, most of whom recognise it as “the building with green plants on the wall.”

That green wall is just one of many innovative features of this award-winning building. Mortgage rate switch key questions answered In this feature, Stuart Powell, managing director of Shore Mortgage and Insurance Services answers questions on topics including remortgaging, life cover and critical illness insurance. This time Stuart answers questions frequently asked of Shore Mortgage and Insurance Services.

What is Rate Switch?

When you take out a mortgage to buy a property or remortgage, your lender will often give you a discounted rate.

When the initial deal comes to an end, it is usual for the lender to move the mortgage onto the lenders Standard Variable Rate (SVR).This rate tends to be between 4% and 5%, depending on the individual lender.

This often leads to an increase in monthly payments. As an example, a £100,000 mortgage on a repayment basis and 20-year term would go from £506 at 2% to £606 at 4%, an increase of £100 per month.

According to a report issued by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in May 2018, around 800,000 Mortgage

holders could save an average of £1,000 a year by moving from their lenders Standard Variable Rate (1).

The Rate Switch plan is intended to encourage those on their lenders SVR, to use our free Rate Switch service.

Why would I change rate?

Industry figures show that 68% of homeowners have never remortgaged, so are likely to be on their lenders SVR (2). There are many reasons for this. One is that there were particularly high mortgage rates in the early 2000s which subsequently dropped and led to lower monthly payments.

People felt satisfied with the lower repayments and consequently have not considered the idea that they could be overpaying unnecessarily.

Using the example above with a £200,000 property value, if that homeowner could get a rate of 2% fixed for two years again, their monthly payment would reduce to £506. This would represent a £100 per month saving.

Switching is so expensive, complicated and time consuming to do. I do not want to do it.

What if my circumstances have changed? For example, I do not earn as much money as I used to?

If we complete a Rate Switch search for you, the lender often does not require further information. The new Rate Switch transaction is not credit scored. We always assess every client's individual needs and give advice accordingly.

What do I need to do?

You need to email us at the above address to provide us with information about your lender, including the outstanding mortgage balance and the value of your property. We will then research the whole of market deals and compare them to those offered by your existing lender.

Innovation and green credentials are key to Langage Farm’s award-winning business success Dairy producer Langage Farm may be best known for its ice cream and clotted cream - but behind the wellloved brand is a multi-award winning company with a passion for innovation, conservation and protection of the environment.

Major investment in an anaerobic digester means that Smithaleigh-based Langage Farm is the UK’s first carbon neutral dairy with the digester generating electricity from food waste which supplies the farm and dairy with its energy needs.

Anaerobic digestion uses bacteria to break down organic matter into a methane rich gas. Production waste from the dairy products factory and food waste from local businesses such as schools and restaurants goes into the digester. It produces electricity and heat for use in the dairy products factory, and residual fertiliser which goes onto the fields to grow forage for the herd of nearly 300 Jersey cows. The milk returns to the products factory for processing and the cycle begins again.

It was this ethos which led to further major investment last year in a glass line for its new range of luxury yoghurts - and helped secure a multi-million pound contract with Aldi.

“There are a few reasons for glass,” said Paul. “One is to offset the plastic pollution of the world’s seas and oceans.

“I think that plastic is going to become less and less popular with consumers. We are one of the greenest companies in the UK and our green credentials are at the forefront of our decision making.”

This passion has led to a close working relationship with Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium to develop new ways to increase awareness of plastic pollution.

And behind the development of the new yoghurt range was an extensive Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Plymouth University which looked at the science behind yoghurts and other dairy products.

It all adds up to a highly-successful business which supplies not only many of the country’s leading supermarkets, but also farm shops, ice cream parlours and other retail outlets.

Langage Farm has seen its workforce increase to more than 50 people with a growing turnover set to top £5.5 million this year.

Langage Farm’s own retail outlet on Plympton Ridgeway is a shop window not only for its own products, but also for other locally-sourced goods.

One of the shop’s most popular lines are its range of hampers. Originally introduced for Christmas they are now available all year round.

Langage Farm have partnered with other artisan producers to create the ultimate in quality, personalised hampers. What makes these so unique is that you get to choose which of the items available in the shop, go into the hampers. Alongside the range of Langage Farm products, the produce choice includes jams and preserves from Waterhouse Fayre, fudge from the Devon Fudge Company, hand-made seasonings from The Greedy Fox, and Birdy’s Honey, as well as teas, cakes and biscuits.

The hampers come in three sizes and on their own they cost £3.95, £4.95 and £5.95, which includes the box, filler and wrap. Customers then choose what goes into them so the hamper is designed to the customer’s own preference and budget.

The shop celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2017 - but the farm’s history goes back much further than that, to the 1950s when Len and Elizabeth Harvey started making cream from their dairy herd, initially for their own use. In those days the farm was at Langage. The cream side of the business grew almost by accident with friends and relatives asking if they could have some, and the word spread farther afield. Finally, in 1980, they decided to launch it as a business.

City waterfront is first in UK to be awarded plastic free status On the same day that Plymouth became the first UK city district to announce its accreditation with ‘Plastic Free Communities’ status for its iconic waterfront, a major new plan to tackle single use plastics and plastic pollution in Plymouth has been launched by key partners in the city.

The Plan For Plastics is a partnership plan developed by members of the Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City Plastics Taskforce.

The launch came during a week of action on plastics in Plymouth, in which the city has hosted major events such as an International Marine Park Conference, the launch of citywide initiatives including reusable plastic bottles and cups, as well as a series of smaller events to tackle plastic litter such as beach cleans and litter picks.

The Plymouth Plastic Free Communities accreditation issued by charity Surfers Against Sewage is the first to be awarded to a city waterfront district in the UK and marks the first step towards the delivery of the citywide Plan for Plastics.

The announcement came after the application, led by Environment Plymouth, and supported by the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, Plymouth City Council and the National Marine Aquarium, secured 70 business pioneers and 50 community ambassadors who have all pledged to give up at least three single use plastic items such as

straws, cups or cutlery, as well as making other pledges to reduce single use plastics.

It doesn’t mean that plastic has been eliminated completely or that it’s banned. It means that a huge step has been taken towards preventing future damage.

There are four main principles in the Plan For Plastics, which are: • Avoid - encouraging residents to avoid single use plastics, and to find alternatives such as reusable coffee cups • Recycle - continue to work to increase recycling rates in Plymouth • Innovate - support academic and industry led research into plastic free alternatives.

• Connect - developing an education programme to encourage people to visit and connect with the natural environment.

The Plan For Plastics is available to download at www.plymouth.gov.uk/plastics Rachel Yates, Plastic Free Communities liaison officer at Surfers Against Sewage, said: “We’re so pleased to add Plymouth Waterfront to our growing list of Plastic Free Approved Communities. We have 300 communities across the UK working towards the status and Plymouth is the first city to make a major inroad into tackling single use plastics and the impact they have on our environment.

Mrs Waggott applied back to the court for an increase of maintenance. Mr Waggott in response, applied to the court to bring an end to the requirement for him to pay spousal maintenance for life.

The payer feels that supporting a former spouse for life is a harsh requirement. The recipient believes they aren’t receiving enough to meet their increasing costs of living.

Mrs Waggott argued she should continue to share her ex husband’s income post separation, as it had been attained with her support during the course of the marriage.

The Court of Appeal confirmed that earning capacity is not an asset to be divided and there is no entitlement to share post separation earnings, although it is a factor to take into account when determining a fair settlement and so may be relevant in some cases to a fair division of capital. The Court reiterated it has

a duty to try and achieve a clean break where possible and so directed that the maintenance payments should cease after 3 years rather than continue for life under the original court order in 2012. Importantly the Court rejected Mrs Waggott’s argument that all of her capital should be preserved and not used to meet her income needs and found that in 2021 Mrs Waggott could invest a proportion of the lump sum already received to raise income or seek employment.

Does it mean the end of a meal ticket for life? The Court acknowledged there will be cases where there isn’t a capital sum to invest to generate income and so there may still be a requirement for long term maintenance.

The Working Group which was created to lead on the SAS accreditation has worked very hard and is delighted with the result just six months after our very first marine plastics meeting in December 2017.”

Plymouth launches new reusable drinking bottles A new reusable drinking bottle has been launched by partners in Plymouth as part of a campaign to reduce single use plastics in the city.

The new Britain’s Ocean City and One Plymouth branded bottles are now available to buy at shops across the city.

They were officially launched by delegates at the International Marine Parks Conference, organised by the Blue Marine Foundation.

The bottles are one of a number of projects, led by the multi-agency Britain’s Ocean City Plastics Taskforce, to tackle plastic pollution in the city.

The bottles follow the success of the reusable plastic coffee cups which were also developed

by One Plymouth and Redrok.

Scott Grenney from One Plymouth said: “Since the launch Mandelai Wolfe of the Blue in April 2018 of the universal Marine Foundation with the reusable One Plymouth Cup, new bottle David Williams of Redrok and I, have been overwhelmed with the response.

“The One Plymouth Cup campaign is helping to highlight the issues and reduce the number of single use throwaway cups in the city, whilst also encouraging footfall to local shops who are offering hot drink discounts.

“Furthermore, 25p from each cup sold is donated to the National Marine Aquarium (NMA) to support their marine conservation agenda. Businesses are also providing cups to their staff to help tackle the ever growing mountain of waste produced by the 2.5 billion coffee cups that are thrown away every year in the UK with only 1 cup in every 400 being recycled.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for StreetScene and the Environment for Plymouth City Council, said: “We are delighted to help launch the new reusable plastic drinking bottles for Plymouth – the reusable cups that were recently launched have already sold 3,000 so I hope the bottles will be equally popular.

“Residents and our partners in Plymouth have really taken on board the importance of getting rid of single use plastics and this is just one of the ways you can get involved – if we all do our bit it can make a huge difference. We hope that as many people buy the bottles as possible and move away from disposable bottles.”

Many people perceive cash as a ‘no’ risk investment, however its value can reduce when you factor in the impact of inflation.

Savings accounts are also subject to interest rates which have typically been below 1.0% since March 2009. If the rate of inflation is high and you are receiving a low interest rate, you could find it difficult, or even impossible, to beat inflation. The rule is simple - after tax, the rate of interest you earn on your savings must be greater than the rate of inflation, in order for your money to actually be growing."

By Fiona Newton of Plymouth Garden Centre As I write this, we have been enjoying some lovely weather throughout May and June after such a cold and late start to Spring! There has been lots of sunshine mixed with some showers (which is good for the garden) which has enabled everyone to get out and Get Into Gardening.

The weather was great for the week of the Chelsea Flower Show which always inspires people to get gardening. This year there were some really strong themes based on smaller gardens and container gardening or Urban Gardening to be posh!

Woodlodge Pots, which we sell here, were featured too.

How to make the garden with colou

You may have seen a selection of plants in our plant area which were grown by the Hillier Nursery. Hillier (who also have 12 garden centres of their own) joins forces with a designer every year to create a wonderful show garden for the RHS Shows.

Since 2016, the garden designer Sarah Eberle has collaborated with Hillier to design their much-anticipated show garden. She is the most decorated designer in Chelsea history having won gold in more categories than any other designer.

A little known fact which some of you may or may not know is that Sarah Eberle actually worked here at Plymouth Garden Centre back in the early 1980s. Some of you may have had some design work carried out by her!

Hillier’s show garden was named the ‘Stihl Inspiration Garden’, designed to incorporate their own mission statement ‘To inspire the creation of green living spaces for now and the future’.

The idea that no matter what size garden you have or type of gardener you are, everyone can have an outdoor space that fills them with pride and ensures they can have a little slice of paradise right outside their own backdoor.

At Plymouth Garden Centre the Urban Gardening concept is something that is important to us being surrounded by ‘city living’. Container gardening in particular is an important part of our own market, and we can help you choose the right plants and pots for your outdoor living space.

Another strong feature at Chelsea were Herbaceous Perennials. So, what does Herbaceous actually mean?

Herbaceous refers to any plant which has a non-woody stem and perennials are plants which will come back again the following year (depending on frost temperatures!).

So, I have put together a list of our favourites which add style, colour and most are great for the bees. As we go through the summer months more and more herbaceous perennials become available too!

Many of the tasks at this time of year are designed to maintain the health and flowering period of your garden and flowers. You can now enjoy the garden as all the hard work from previous months pays off!

The garden is full of bloom and all the senses are alive with colour, scent and taste in your own garden oasis. As you harvest all your fruit, veg and herbs follow these few tasks to keep your garden looking blooming marvellous through the Summer months!

Deadheading your plants: This is often a big but gradual task and it will allow your plants to flower again and again. Most plants including summer bedding, herbaceous perennials and roses will really benefit from a continued attention to faded and wilting blooms. Once removed the plant puts its energy into creating more buds and flowers.

Deadheading also allows you to have a little ‘potter’ around your garden, enjoying see the efforts of your labour!

Lawncare: Lawns are really frustrating aren’t they?!! I shouldn’t say that really but they seem like a never ending project! Does anyone else have to listen to their partner go on about the lawn, go out for an inspection of the stripy ‘flymo lawn’ that’s been long awaited and then just when you think they have spent all the time on it and finally cracked it, it needs mowing all the time or the dog waters it and makes a brown patch again!!! We have done battle with our lawn for 12 months now and finally we are getting somewhere. We decided to just tackle the weeds head on with a specific lawn

Wet Areas: Zantedeschia – great in a pot. Iris, Astilbe A few other plants I think are looking great at the moment too are Hardy Gerberas, Gazania’s, Rudbeckia, Erysimum and Echinacea.

As with all plants, if you do have pets please do read up as some are toxic to pets and children in different ways. Often they would need to consume a large quantity of foliage or seeds but if you have a puppy like mine who likes to help with the gardening be mindful of what you put in the garden and where.

weed killer and then fed it later with a lawn feed. We have used Westland’s Safe Lawn because we have two Labradors and I have to say the lawn has done really well! Sadly there is no product out there that stops the puppy digging a hole in the lawn!

Make sure you don’t cut your lawn too short so that it retains moisture and nutrients which it relies on if the weather is hot and dry. New lawns will need periodic watering too while turf or new seeds develop. If it’s dry we give ours a water anyway when we do the borders.

Watering and Feeding: Water your plants in the evenings as temperatures cool down if you can. If not, early morning but avoid the main sunshine as plants dry out quickly and leaves can get scorched. Baskets and containers will dry out more quickly. If you haven’t planted yet you can use a gel product to help retain moisture. Incorporate a weekly or fortnightly liquid feed into your watering programme as this will allow plants and flowers to flourish and well-fed plants can fight pests and diseases better. Roses can be vulnerable if they dry out. Keep an eye out for aphids at this time of year.
