Get on board Mayflower 400 In little more than a year’s time the Mayflower 400 celebrations will be launched in Plymouth.

It will herald the start of a year-long programme of events and activities which are designed to put Plymouth on the global map.

It is anticipated that hundreds of thousands of visitors from the USA alone will visit the city to join in the celebrations marking the epic journey by the Pilgrim Fathers which started from Plymouth in September 1620.

Some details of the events planned during 2019 and 2020 have already been announced visit www.mayflower400uk.org to find out more - but information on many more activities will be released in the coming months.

Ahead of the celebrations, a range of tourism products are being developed to maximise the potential of the Mayflower 400 celebrations. Travel journalist Fionn Davenport, author of Lonely Planet, is helping create the tourist packages and recently visited Plymouth to see what the city has to offer overseas visitors.

He was impressed with what he saw - as was the Minister for Tourism Michael Ellis who also visited Plymouth recently to meet the Mayflower 400 team and city officials.

He highlighted the importance of Mayflower 400 and the potential it provides to boost the local economy. You will find a full report on both visits on pages 38 and 39.

SHOULDA GOT A PRE-NUP? Solicitor Debbie Cahill from The Family Law Company explains why you should consider a pre-nup before your wedding.

In a competition for the least romantic phrase in the English language, ‘pre-nuptial agreement’(pre-nup) must rank up there with ‘it’s not you, it’s me’. Who wants to think about the demise of a relationship whilst organising the celebration of its start? But with more than one in three marriages ending in divorce and increasingly complicated family set-ups, newly engaged couples may be wise to consider a pre-nuptial agreement just in case their happy ever after turns into ‘I’ll see you in (divorce) court’.

What is a pre-nup?

It is essentially a formal contract made by a couple before their wedding, which sets out how they will divide their assets in the event of separation, or death. The agreement can define what is and what is not a marital asset and records how assets will be divided to Debbie fairly meet the Cahill parties’ needs upon separation. At the time of writing, these contracts are not legally binding in any court; however, the courts are taking them into account much more often. Properly prepared and fair pre-nuptial agreements are now likely to be upheld, so long as certain safeguards have been met.

What are these safeguards?

In a nutshell: •

Both parties must take independent legal advice before entering into the agreement. This advice will identify the parties’ relative claims, so they fully understand what claims they may be giving up and the implications of the agreement

•

There must be full and frank disclosure of both parties’ financial circumstances, to include any likely inheritances or additional assets which may be added during the marriage. Nothing is to be hidden

•

Neither party will be put under any pressure or duress to sign the agreement

•

The agreement must be entered into not less than 28 days before the nuptials

•

The arrangements agreed will be both fair and realistic for both parties. If the agreement is too weighted in one party’s favour, it is likely to be judged to be unfair by the court

•

The agreement should be reviewed and amended throughout the marriage to take account of any significant changes, such as the birth of children.

Is a pre-nup enforceable?

Although pre-nuptial agreements are not yet legally enforceable, a recent Law Commission report has recommended that they should be, and a draft act of parliament has been prepared.

Unfortunately, there is no timetable to present this before

parliament and it may be some time before the agreements are fully enforceable through the courts.

In any financial application within divorce, the court has wide discretion in deciding how to divide the matrimonial assets, taking into account individual needs, compensating each party for their contributions and sharing the marital assets fairly.

A pre-nup can be designed to protect non-marital assets brought into the marriage such as family wealth or future inheritances, and to ensure that provision is made for children from previous relationships.

To be upheld, the pre-nup must meet the needs of each of the couple as at the time of implementation. It is unlikely that a pre-nup that tries to make arrangement for future children would be fully enforceable.

Author James bounces back from adversity Sometimes life throws a curve ball designed to hurl us off course without any hint of a warning.

Due to a tragic accident involving James Bridgwater and his mum, when he was just five, such a catastrophe slammed into his existence, with enough force to knock him down for good.

However, James has succeeded in getting up, not just from this circumstance, but from others along the way, time and time again, proving that creativity and joy can spring from the most unlikely of situations.

After doing a degree as a mature student at Marjon, James took his passion for literature and his frequent writing to a whole new level.

“I had quite a lonely existence, growing up as an only child to a single parent, spending much of it engrossed in a book,” explained James. “And, as I had few people to talk to, I developed a habit of writing down what I felt in a daily diary during especially difficult times in my life.

“I have had some quite unusual times, living with epilepsy, suffering a mental health breakdown at 18, and struggling to regain balance from the trauma that accompanied me from an early age.

“I found solace in writing; my first self-published 8000-word book developed out of a 200-word character description developed at a writing workshop, that I couldn’t put out of my mind," he added.

James’ determination to face life and its difficulties head on has seen him continually stretch his boundaries. He is qualified to teach English as a second language and spent time in Hungary doing just that; he was an extra in Poldark; a church warden at Stoke Damerel Church; he finds time to write poetry and is just about to publish his third novel.

His second novel, Confessions of an Emotional Shipwreck, is autobiographical and available to buy on Amazon.

James, who lives in Keyham, explained that even after

finding a publisher, it is still a difficult task to navigate the book selling world. “I am a big supporter of local bookshops, launching my first novel with a party at Waterstones,” he said.

“And I’m very aware of the difficulties local bookstores, along with authors, face in trying to make a living.

“I am sure there are ways we can all work together to keep the world of reading alive – there’s a resurgence of interest in book clubs and numerous writing workshops in the city. I’m sure these, along with launch parties and book signings could be held in bookstores as well as other venues, helping get the word out that there is a great literary talent in the city and its environs.”

James is part of the Discovery Writers Group, a lively and fun-loving community of writers who meet in Plymouth Methodist Central Hall, Drake Circus on the first Friday of each month, to write and discuss writing, encourage one another to maintain creative momentum and share information about forthcoming activities and events.

The group will be leading, ‘Words for Wellbeing’ an afternoon of workshops at the Discovery Café on Saturday September 29 as part of Plymouth Arts Weekender. As a novelist and auto-biographer James will be leading a small group workshop on Writing Life Stories: Tips & techniques on how to turn your life story into creative non-fiction, offering an opportunity for experienced writers or beginners to identify the parts of their story that will make good reading.

Other workshop leaders include: Marion Clare on Performance Poetry and tips to improve self-confidence in writing and speaking; actor and storyteller, Bev Smerdon on stories for well-being and an interactive story-telling workshop for children (ages 7+) on the theme of celebrating difference and creating unity called Platypus Unites the World with performance poet and storyteller, Jackie Wacha.

How KF Kitchens made Christine’s dream come

Christine Sharpe After two years of searching with no success, Christine Sharpe from Plympton had almost given up hope of ever finding her dream kitchen – until local family-owned company KF Kitchens came to the rescue.

Christine visited showrooms across the South West in her quest, but it was a case of saving the best to last, when KF Kitchens came up trumps. Not only could they supply the kitchen she was looking for, but they also completed the installation with a high standard of customer service that made the experience “stress-free” for Christine and her husband, Russell.

“We travelled as far as Bristol, looking at showrooms, and we visited all the big DIY chains but none of them had what I wanted,” said Christine. “I knew the colour I was looking for and Russell had drawn up the plans, but we couldn’t find anywhere that would accommodate us with the design.

“Then we tried KF Kitchens, it was one of the last places we went into – and I’m so glad we did. We were very impressed by everyone there. They weren’t pushy, they allowed us to look around the showroom at our leisure. “ After bringing home a selection of samples from the KF Kitchens showroom at Faraday Business Park, Christine and Russell opted for acrylic metallic blue gloss cupboards, with a grey Silestone worktop.

Throughout the planning process, they were helped by KF Kitchens’ owners, Nathan and Derinda Damarell, and their team: “We had basically designed the kitchen ourselves and Nathan agreed that it would work well in the space,” said Christine.

“It meant changing the layout completely so that we had an open plan kitchen-dinerutility. We wanted the job done properly, which included taking away a wall and getting rid of the artexed ceiling.

“Everything is new,” added Christine, “the units and worktops, the floors, the appliances, the lighting and electrics, the skirting boards, the plastering and the painting. And right from the start – from choosing the products and Nathan getting all the specifications – to the very end, when they cleared away all the rubbish – they’ve been brilliant to work with. There was no stress for us whatsoever.”

KF Kitchens commissioned the worktops from Plymouth company Mayflower Stone, who supplied and installed them: “They were brilliant, too,” said Christine.

Within six weeks of visiting the KF Kitchens showroom, the work to create Christine’s kitchen was under way. And, less than a month later, she had her dream kitchen: “It was four days before Christmas and I couldn’t have been happier!” said Christine, who chose in-built Neff appliances: “I had a free-standing oven before, so I’m enjoying having my two single Neff ovens at eye level.”

The biggest ‘ask’ from Christine was that she didn’t want traditional straight-edged worktops and units: “I wanted curved edges – and they’ve done a fabulous job.” She also wanted the utility room to feel part of the kitchen, while also being distinct: “Again, they’ve done that just the way we wanted.

“The entire kitchen now has a greater feeling of space and at the same time, I’ve

got more storage because the cupboard space is much more efficient.” The feeling of space has been created by the streamlined design, the minimalist stainless steel handles, the oven with ‘slide and hide’ doors and the cupboards that have doors that can retract when open.

After her experience, Christine says she would have no hesitation in recommending KF Kitchens to others: “I was impressed with the whole process. They were friendly, efficient, professional and reliable. They kept me informed from start to finish and involved me in the process at all times.

There were no hidden costs, so we had no nasty surprises at the end. They told us the ball-park figure at the start and the only times it increased was due to our choices to add certain items, such as the extra lighting. And that was entirely our choice.

They never used hard-sell tactics or pushed us to add anything, so we were in control of our expenditure.

“And now I’ve got a beautiful kitchen, which is also a real addition to our home.”

The 'wonderful' women who are helping other women through difficult times A coaching and mentoring service for young women in Plymouth is offering a listening ear and some friendly guidance to help them through a difficult time in their lives.

Platform 50 is an initiative by Plymouth-based not-forprofit community interest company, Arterne CIC. The support project has already begun helping women aged 16-25, after dozens of women responded to an appeal for volunteer coaches and mentors.

The appeal was made in the May edition of Plymouth Magazine by Arterne CIC founder Cindy Willcocks, a qualified registered mental health nurse of almost 20 years: “The response has been amazing,” said Cindy. “Women from all walks of life and of all ages have come forward – from students and gym instructors to nurses and professionals who have worked in social services.

“We’ve got about 30 volunteers so far, a bank of wonderful women who just want to help other women. Ours is a community-based, confidential, informal service. Everyone’s got something to share, and what we do is based on listening. You don’t need qualifications to listen. It’s just being able to give time.”

All the volunteers undergo induction training and statutory safeguarding checks and attend two workshops a year looking at particular areas such as mental health for women and drug and alcohol abuse.

Cindy said: “I recruit, train and match them up with young women who might benefit from talking to them because of their particular experiences. Perhaps the mentor has been through those issues themselves in the past – although that’s not a prime entry point.”

She explained how inspire, guide and support Platform 50 can help: “Young women can

feel overwhelmed, they can’t see the wood for the trees because of pressures. A bit of guidance and support at this time in their lives can get them through a specific issue in their life at that time.

“That might be exam stress, career worries, busy families, unhappy relationships or loneliness. Some people need ongoing encouragement to overcome addiction. This is very much about early intervention, which can prevent things from building up. It’s about getting in as early as possible.

“As an example, one woman called us and said: ‘I think my sister might need to speak to someone’. She’d noticed that her sister appeared really low. They came together for the initial meeting and we matched the sister up with a volunteer. It has given her an interest outside of her family life, it’s allowed her to step outside of that and take a breath.

Sometimes, that’s all it needs.

“Often, people who feel troubled don’t’ know what the problem is. Having an outside perspective can help. But if you don’t talk to someone, it can escalate. That’s why having a support network at a time of stress is so important.”

The young women get a face-to-face meeting with their coach/mentor once a month and two phone calls, after an initial meeting with Cindy. The get-togethers are always in a public place: “The important point for all the young women is that the process is led by them. They decide the conversations, they are in control, it’s centred on them.

“Arterne CIC is about helping them to have a voice, I’m really passionate about that. And I’m passionate about people, helping them to be the best version of them that they can be. It’s easy to get in touch with us at Platform 50. Just give us a call or send us an email. There’s also a

Arterne CIC works in partnership with organisations in the city who have been pointing some of their clients in the direction of Platform 50. “We’re not a catch-all. If people need more specialist help or face safeguarding issues, there are other services that can help, too.”

Cindy, who also specialises in transformation leadership, set up Arterne CIC in 2016 after previously working in the NHS and for charitable organisations including as project manager at Hamoaze House.

She is commissioned by clients such as care homes to re-design their policies and practices to improve quality and safety. Cindy has turned around several care homes in the city, improving lives for those who live there and securing higher ratings from the Care Quality Commission for the homes. She is also a national consultant for STORM Skills Training CIC, in the area of self-harm and suicide prevention.

Money made from this work is what funds projects such as Platform 50 and Operation Snow, where volunteers help to get food and essential items to families on low income and homeless people in the city. Initially launched at Christmas 2016, it now works throughout the year.

Arterne CIC operates a tight ship, with just Cindy, a project assistant and a communications assistant.

One of its new projects is a collaboration with Plymouth Albion and Real Ideas Organisation (RIO) to deliver the ‘Ruck and Roll’ project for young men this autumn, focusing on mental health, physical health and employability.

Now, Cindy hopes to set up a Platform 50 service for young men aged 16-25. She said: “Male suicide rates are still increasing, it’s an absolute tragedy. Talking to other people and expressing their feelings is an issue, and we know there is a demand for Platform 50 for young men in Plymouth.”

Adrenalin – the ultimate back to school venue everyone can enjoy!

What to do, now the children have gone back to school and have all that energy to burn? After a long hot summer of fun, the return of school days in September is bound to be a shock to the system.

But fear not, parents, because help is at hand. The Adrenalin urban activity park at Derriford is running afterschool sessions for kids, designed as an instant cure for energy overload.

Each weekday, the After-School Deal offers whole park access for an hour for just £5 – that’s half price. The sessions are 4pm to 5pm or 5pm to 6pm.

For an additional £5 you can also add on a meal deal – a pizza and a drink in the café upstairs, which has a viewing area for parents. There’s also a well-equipped gym upstairs for mums and dads who want to keep fit, while their youngsters are having fun downstairs. Win-win!

The park – in the iconic ‘Ship’ building – has a range of activities with challenges to suit all ages. There are also dedicated time slots for specific age groups throughout the week: “Adrenalin is much, much more than just a trampoline park,” said co-owner Rob Munro. “We’ve got a brilliant obstacle course which anyone can do and is open to over 5’s – the most popular one, ‘The Sweep,’ is great for groups.”

Adrenalin has introduced a soft play area for Under-5s and ‘Mini-Adrenalin’ sessions, with a mix of bouncing and fun challenges. This takes place before the park opens for other visitors, allowing the younger ones to have exclusive use.

During term time, this is 10am to noon on weekdays and 10am to 11am at weekends– ideal for parents who’ve just dropped their older children off to school. In the school holidays, entry is 10am to 11am every day. The cost is £5 per child. Packages are also available for parties.

Front of house supervisor, Jess Clarke, said: “It’s a lovely, safe environment – and mums and dads are encouraged to join in, too. We put Disney music on the sound system

and some of the children like to do the sessions in fancy dress.” Outside of the dedicated Mini-Adrenalin sessions, the soft play area also means the Under-5s can play with their parents on hand, while their older siblings enjoy other parts of the park.

For all standard bookings, the price for an hour with full park access is £10, but the second hour is half price if you book for two hours: “Most people book for two hours,” said Rob. “It gives them a chance to spend a decent amount of time on the trampolines and all of the challenges on the obstacle course.”

But Adrenalin isn’t just for young children. There are dedicated sessions for Over-18s every Thursday evening 6pm to 8pm, while Friday night is Xtreme Night, two hours for £10 (7pm to 9pm) – the most popular session of the week, with the lights down low and the music turned up! Suitable for all ages over 5, advanced booking is advised. The Saturday Night Disco is also open to everyone.

Adrenalin marshals are always on hand to help, and many of them are qualified first aiders.

Unsurprisingly, with so much on offer under one roof, parties and corporate team-building events have become hugely popular. Most groups opt for a tailored package – ring reception to discuss your requirements. Parties can be any size from 10 people to 150, with corporate bookings available on weekdays.

“Corporate bookings get exclusive use of the entire park, a meeting room, and the café,” said Jess. “We recently had Sitel here for a team building exercise – 100 people for two hours – and they loved it. They’ve told us that the team building exercises were great and that it was excellent value for money. They’ve said they’ll be booking another session with us.”

Parties are also popular: “We’re already starting to get enquiries for Christmas parties,” said Jess. “Last Christmas, we had loads of local football teams and schools, so we would

Rob opened Adrenalin a year-and-a-half ago and is always looking to add new elements: “We’re keeping it fresh, so there are new things for people to enjoy. We now have an attraction that has something for children of all ages, for older teenagers, for parents and for parties.

“When we designed the park, we wanted something that was appropriate for adults,” he added. “So the café has a sofa area and our menu is done with grown-ups in mind as well as children. For example, we have great Fairtrade coffee to go with our cakes and meals.

“And we have the gym.”

The multi-functional air-conditioned gym is open 7am to 8pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 9am to 8pm Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays; and 9am to 6pm on Sundays. There’s no joining fee and no contract. Membership is just £15 a month, or £10 for corporate partners. A family membership costs £20 a month for each parent, which entitles their children to half price admission to the activity park, 7-days-a-week. The gym is friendly and nonintimidating – feel free to pop in to meet the team and view the facilities.

New 5k event is added to

city’s popular road races Organisers of the highly successful Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon and 10k race are introducing an exciting new event - the Plymouth 5k.

Event West delivers the Britain’s Ocean City Running Series consisting of the Plymouth 10K, Half Marathon, City College Plymouth 5k Secondary Schools Challenge and Delt Shared Services Primary Schools Challenge.

Event West have now announced that the Plymouth 5k will take place on Sunday October 7, starting at 10.15am after the Plymouth 10k.

The event aims to encourage new runners to take up the sport, get active and enjoy the experience of a closed road race in Plymouth with chipped timing and a 5k medal for all finishers.

The Plymouth 5k will be an ideal opportunity for friends, families and young people aged 11 and over to start running, get more active and have fun working towards a common goal. It is a distance that even the busiest people can train for, and a perfectly achievable goal for those new to running.

Race director Nigel Rowe said: “I have the pleasure in announcing an open 5K race that will be staged just after the Plymouth 10K on closed roads.

“It will provide the ideal opportunity for those on Couch to 5K and beginner running groups to take part in a big event.

“Those who would like to link up with a running group will be able to access details on our website that links to England Athletics and Run Together programmes delivered by their qualified leaders.

“The road running boom is still with us and this event provides a platform to be part of a big race. The distance, with the correct preparation, is a great way to engage in physical activity and running. Once you get the bug you will then be able to step up to the 10K distance,” he added.

It vindicates the decision taken by experienced chef Ryan Marsland to give up his position as head chef at a leading eatery in the city to open his own restaurant with fiancé Tanya Poole: “We’re really enjoying it,” said Ryan. “After working for other people for so long, I’ve got the freedom now to create the sort of food that I’d like to go out and eat. And the fact that people enjoy it and keep coming back makes all that hard work worthwhile.”

Ryan describes the restaurant as ‘between a brasserie and fine dining,’ with an accessibly-priced menu featuring seasonal, local produce and drinks – mains start from £14. Tanya said: “A lot of comments we get are about how welcoming and homely it is here. It’s nice to surprise people, too. We are tucked away in a residential street and a lot of first-time customers say ‘wow, we didn’t expect it to be this good’!”

The restaurant is in the Michelin and Trencherman Guides and holds the Taste of the West Gold Award. Yet it retains the ambience of a family-run restaurant: “We’re not fancy – we don’t have six people plating up!” said Ryan. “We just concentrate on maximising the flavours, that’s what we’re all about.”

Ryan is helped in the kitchen by a chef and an assistant. Between them, they make everything – including the bread, ketchup sauce, jams, chutneys and ice-cream, all of which are available to buy and take home. The restaurant also sells home-made fig oil made using figs from the tree in the garden. Hence the name of the restaurant. Just give Ryan 24 hours’ notice as it’s all made fresh to order.

The core menu includes local fish and chips with a Roam pale ale batter; steak burger and triple cooked fries; local hake fillet in a harissa shellfish broth; Creedy carver duck; Cornish pork belly; Cornish steak; and fig leaf-wrapped butternut and aubergine curry with crispy coriander rice. Starters include Devon mussels, Devon crab fish cake, and several vegetarian options.

The daily specials depend on what’s in season and available.

At the time of writing, these included two of the summer’s biggest hits – Ryan’s stunning Seafood Plate and his inspired Foraged Salad. The Seafood Plate is a mouth-watering selection of scallops, tiger prawns, pollock fish cake, mussels and Plymouth-landed octopus: “Octopus tastes like the sea,” said Ryan. “We slow braise it in water and olive oil and a little bit of lemon and then pan fry it with the rest of the ingredients to bring all the flavours out.

“We put it on the menu as a starter, but people started asking for it as a main.”

The Foraged Salad has also gone down a storm: “We have customers who ring up and ask if that’s on the specials board. It’s just a lovely fresh salad with elements that have been foraged by local forager, Lucy Atkins. We like to go the extra mile with our food, to do more than people expect.”

The care and attention put into each dish is also evident in the desserts, which include homemade ice cream with biscotti; lemon posset with blood orange sorbet and shortbread; sticky toffee pudding with honeycomb ice cream and toffee sauce; tiramisu; and the most popular pud of all, Ryan’s chocolate baked Alaska. Set menus are available on selected days and times of the week, £15 for two courses, £20 for three. All the meat and seafood is locally sourced, with the exception of the prawns, while the seafood is MSC-certified, which means it’s sustainably sourced. The restaurant is also part of the Sustainable Fish Cities pledge.

The Fig Tree @36 is open for Sunday Lunch, with a choice of local meats and always with proper Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and home-made gravy. Again, the set menu is £15 for two courses, £20 for three. Vegetarians who book can request a veggie option for their roast, while some specials and dishes from the main menu are also available: “It’s more than just a roast,” said Ryan.

Dishes can be made to order that aren’t on the menu, to accommodate vegetarians, vegans and customers with dietary requirements. Most of the dishes are or can be gluten-free.

Since opening a year ago, Ryan and Tanya have started to put their own stamp on the restaurant.

Outside, they’ve opened up the sunny rear courtyard so it seats 12 people – booking for these tables is essential. The restaurant’s increasing popularity has also seen the team grow and Tanya said: “We see our team as our extended family. They’re fabulous and value each and every team member.”

Patricia is all smiles again - thanks to Foot Solutions A Plympton woman whose chronic foot pain threatened her job is now all smiles thanks to Foot Solutions.

Patricia Wilkinson spends most of the working day on her feet as a cleaner at Drake Circus, so the foot pain she historically suffered was an extremely serious issue.

Her troubles really started five years ago when she was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis by her GP. Plantar fasciitis is a common problem caused by inflammation to the plantar fascia ligament. which is the band of tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes.

Patricia, who has worked at Drake Circus for 12 years said: “The pain was so bad that at times I could barely walk. I had to take pain killers because of the situation and in the end I had to take time off sick from work and I was worried about how I could cope in the future.”

However, an appointment with her GP led Patricia to visit Foot Solutions in Royal Parade.

“It was about two and a half years ago and my doctor told me to try Foot Solutions,” she said.

“I visited the store and the staff could not have been more helpful. They carried out all sorts of tests and examinations which confirmed the long-standing condition I had.”

The staff suggested customised orthotic insoles as well as recommending the right type of footwear - and the results, according to Patricia, were amazing.

“I have no pain at all now and can cope with long shifts on my feet without any discomfort,” she said.

When she is not working at Drake Circus, Patricia enjoys walking in and around Plympton - and as our photo shows, she enjoys every minute of it.

Bubble Rush is a 5km, foam filled, sponsored fun run where participants can run, jog or walk through different coloured bubble stations getting covered in foam of all colours along the way. The event is sponsored by GA Solicitors.

CHSW brought the event to Plymouth for the first-time last year and 1200 people took part raising £40,000 in sponsorship for the charity that supports children with life limiting and life threatening illnesses and their families through its three children’s hospices.

All ages can take part in Bubble Rush making it the perfect event to get family, friends or colleagues signed up for. There will be staggered starts at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm to ensure everyone gets maximum bubbles.

Now in its seventh year, the Plymouth Seafood Festival returns over the weekend of September 15 and 16. It will be supporting the fishing industry by offering a weekend full of delicious dishes for all the family to enjoy as well as hands-on activities, including children’s cookery fun, where they can touch and taste local produce.

The city has many reasons to celebrate its fishing industry; Plymouth was the first in the world to be awarded the Fish2Fork Blue Fish status for its commitment to sourcing sustainable fish. Plymouth also has the second largest fish market in the UK, where every day the market can receive up to as much as 60 tons of fish.

It’s no surprise that there is such a variety of fantastic seafood restaurants along the waterfront.

The festival is a celebration of this and an opportunity to support Plymouth’s local fishing industry in a weekend of family-fun. Well known regional chefs from some of the best restaurants in the South West will be showing off their culinary skills in the special Cookery Theatre.

Throughout the weekend visitors can sample the delights of everything from lobster to whelk, as well as learning some new cooking techniques, such as picking crab.

Join in the fish auction of the day’s freshly caught catch; all contributions support the Fisherman’s Mission charity.

Visitors will be spoilt for choice with the huge selection of delicious food stalls to enjoy, and the children will love the crabbing competition along the harbour side by the Boat House Café on the Sunday. Prizes awarded on the main stage.

CATERed will be entertaining the children with handson cookery fun and activities, where they can learn about local produce through touch and taste. The festival’s official resident artist, Debby Mason, will have her fabulous artwork and products on display.

Commissioned by the Plymouth Trawler Agents, Debby has created a beautiful poster showing all 50 fish species which can be found from local waters. These will be available on her stand. Go aboard the fishing vessels provided by Interfish which will be moored alongside Quay Square. This is a great opportunity to explore the vessels and chat to the local fishermen about their fascinating and sometimes forbidding experiences out on the water. And, more importantly, where to purchase the freshest, locally caught seafood.

There is also the return of the fantastic Cardboard Boat Race, which will be on Commercial Wharf on Saturday. Build a boat out of nothing but a few bits of cardboard and some sticky tape, and sail it around a course in Plymouth harbour. The winner is the last one to sink! Teams can either opt into the pre-build option or build on the day.

The Plymouth Sustainable Fish City campaign, part of Reconnect, is run by the National Marine Aquarium, and began in 2013 with the aim of bringing together a range of partners and initiatives to deliver change that supports responsible, local production and consumption.

Contemporary work by leading international artists will be displayed across the city Work by leading artists from 12 different countries will be displayed at locations across the city as part of a pilot for a new international biennial festival of contemporary art in Plymouth.

The Atlantic Project: After the Future is part of Horizon, a two-year programme led by Plymouth Culture with Arts Council England in the lead-up to Mayflower 400 in 2020.

From September 28 to October 21 international artists will present new site-specific commissions in unconventional contexts and outdoor locations across the city.

There will also be an open platform for artist-led activities offering opportunities for emerging artists.

Locations will include Armada Way, the Civic Centre, Drakes Island, House of Fraser, the National Marine Aquarium and the former Millennium nightclub on Union Street Hosted by the Arts Institute at the University of Plymouth and curated by Tom Trevor, the project has been developed as a core partnership between The Box - the multi-million pound redevelopment of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery - and the University of Plymouth, with the ambition of becoming a regular biennial festival in the South West of England, to be launched as part of the Mayflower 400 programme in 2020.

Tom Trevor, said: “The visual arts in Plymouth are undergoing an exciting period of change, in the lead-up to the Mayflower 400 anniversary in 2020.

Building on a decade of collaboration between exhibition venues, the Horizon programme is a two-year city-wide development programme which aims to grow the whole of the visual arts ecology.

“The culmination of this process is The Atlantic Project, a pilot for a new international festival of contemporary art in the public realm, which will aim to raise the critical profile of visual arts in Plymouth and the region, and to be a highly engaging experience for a wide range of audiences that is relevant and distinctive to the locality.”

Drawing inspiration from Plymouth’s past and present, artworks will be located across the city, encouraging exploration of the historic coastal city, and the discovery of contemporary art in unexpected locations.

Raku at 45 Southside This autumn 45 Southside’s exhibition focuses on raku fired ceramics. Five talented Devon and Cornwall based artists will be showing their latest raku work.

The raku technique originates from 16th century Japan and is a process in which pottery that once fired and then removed from the kiln is subjected to post-firing reduction (or smoking) by being placed in containers of combustible materials such as sawdust.

The smoke blackens raw clay and causes crazing in the glaze surface. The crazing is a distinctive feature particular to the raku technique and a certain amount of unpredictability to this process makes every piece unique. Due to this process the finished pottery has an aroma of ambers.

The gallery also welcomes a new artist; California born Mary Kaun-English. She creates pit-fired and burnished sculptural pieces, a technique in which clay is polished to a beautiful sheen without the use of glaze.

The participating artists are Dan Chapple, Sarah McCormack, Tim Welbourne, Christina Peters and Mary Kaun-English all creating their unique style using a similar firing technique.

Works on display are classical shapes and forms, animal figurines (watch the tapirs), cottages, double-walled bowls, vases, bottles and abstract sculptural pieces all showing off their distinctive raku features.

The exhibition will run from September 22 to October 30.

The opening view is on September 22 from 3pm to 6pm, all are welcome.

Local exhibitions Until Dec 21 2018 PLYMOUTH - FROM DESTRUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION House of Fraser, Floor 5 Plymouth suffered greatly during World War II. The docks and naval base made it a target resulting in the almost total destruction of the city centre and the displacement of tens of thousands of Plymothians.

The city we see today epitomises the ambition and vision of post war planning. This exhibition includes fascinating objects, images and footage from the collection of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the South West Film and Television Archive that explores the themes of destruction and reconstruction.

Until Sept 1 COLLECTED SHADOWS Peninsula Arts Gallery, Plymouth University This exhibition of 200 photographs is drawn from the extensive collection of the Archive of Modern Conflict (AMC). The AMC was first established 25 years ago as a repository for vernacular photography and ephemera relating to the First and Second World Wars. It has since grown to a total of eight million images encompassing a plethora of subject matter - not solely defined by war and conflict - collected from diverse sources all over the world. This eclectic display includes scientific, astronomical and botanical studies, studio sittings, portraits and private snapshots, press photographs, film stills and aerial photographs from several wars, as well as a rich and unpredictable array of works we would simply have to call art.

Trip to Japan is full of Eastern promise My tendency for being a bit of an organiser has often held me back from the more adventurous side of travelling. I’m always looking to do something different though and when I first heard it was possible to have a fly drive holiday in Japan my curiosity was well and truly fired-up.

I must admit at first the idea seemed terrifying. How would I cope with the chaotic traffic and the million miles an hour Tokyo lifestyle portrayed in TV and films? Even more worrying was the prospect of driving on the wrong side of the road in a country where I couldn’t understand any of the road signs.

Putting myself in the position of customer rather than travel agent I decided to put together my own holiday for next year while at the same time sharing the planning with you.

I cannot count the number of times a client will ask 'when’s the best time to go' so let’s start there. Japan has seasons like our own, but with bigger extremes so, as I’m not keen on it being too hot, spring and autumn seem to fit the bill.

I don’t want to do all the driving myself and after a brief consultation with friends we plump for October, sorted.

As a group of four (two couples) we will be able to share the driving, but without doubt this is also our biggest fear. It was time to call in the experts and who better than an old friend of our business Charlie from Japan Links Travel.

I spent a couple of hours with him one morning exploring how this style of holiday would work and establishing what support and advice we could give our own clients if they decided to take the plunge.

I was immediately reassured that Japanese drivers are polite and patient with road rage an unknown phenomenon.

In fact, the whole country is a haven of peace and order with most road signs in English and wait for it…they drive on the same side as us.

Add to this an automatic gearbox and English-speaking Sat Nav and suddenly the clouds of doubt were beginning to lift.

Charlie felt that having a car in the big cities was probably unnecessary and this would also avoid the slightly more aggressive city driving and congestion. This seemed to make

sense as I had already heard about the superb public transport within Japan’s urban areas.

Over the last few years I have been on several guided tours to countries as far flung as Costa Rica and India.

Although I enjoyed these trips I really disliked the strict scheduling and time dependence upon the group.

From my experience what guided tours do particularly well is making sure you take in all the must-see highlights of a destination and get you plenty of ticks off that all important bucket list.

My task for Charlie was simple, I want to see it all in a fortnight and still have time to taste the atmosphere and culture of such an intriguing country. Oh, and just for good measure we only want to spend £3000 each…no pressure then.

After a couple of days our proposed itinerary arrived, and I have to say I was stunned by the attention to detail it offered.

It felt like we had been provided with the ultimate dot to dot picture book. All we had to do was get on the plane at Heathrow and start joining the dots by filling each day with our own experiences.

A range of carefully chosen hotels has been booked, each one ensuring we get the most out of every port of call. Daily breakfast is included and the occasional evening meal which will give us loads of freedom, but still provide a reassuring structure to our holiday.

On arrival in Japan a local representative will be waiting with our name on a board to make sure we get the correct shuttle transfer to our hotel. Then we will then spend three nights in Tokyo with easy access to local trains and the metro system. I’ve already ordered my Lonely Planet guide book to

Next stop Hakone, famous for its hot springs, natural beauty and that all important view across Lake Ashinoko of Mount Fuji. The idea of travelling light sounds such a bonus.

No visit to Japan would be complete without the worldfamous Bullet Train so, after using local transport to take in Odawara with its glorious 15th-century castle, it’s all aboard for a lightning fast ride to Kyoto.

I was both surprised and very impressed to learn that all the rail travel was included in our package. They even provide a handy 'Japan Rail Pass' guide which explains clearly how to book tickets and reserve seats. I don’t get the impression there will be any British Rail style overcrowding or delays to worry about on this trip.

Now I know what you’re thinking what happened to the driving? Well that’s the beauty of this wonderfully planned journey, no car until you need it. After a couple of days exploring the temples, palaces and shrines of Kyoto we will

finally get our car keys and set off by road back to Tokyo.

With our route and hotels for week two carefully laid out in front of us we will have the chance to take in the real Japan while pootling along at our own pace. I can’t wait for the first time we stop to visit a local shop or restaurant with no idea what wonders lay in store.

Japan Links provide a wonderful pretravel pack including detailed tourist maps, a guide to Japanese customs and information on transport links. They even provide some useful words and phrases although I’m not sure my Plymouth accent lends itself well to such hard pronunciation. It won’t stop me trying though and I can’t wait to go.

KF Kitchens make light work of fabulous family-friendly kitchen Question: How do you transform a hallway and two small rooms into one stunning kitchen and living space, opening up the fabulous views outside?

That’s exactly what Richard and Sarah Ackland did at their beautiful home overlooking the golf course at St Mellion in Cornwall. The couple bought the house in 2016, always with the intention of creating a large downstairs room to make the most of the lovely view.

“The two rooms that were here before were very small and dark and didn’t make the most of the views,” said Sarah. “When we contacted KF Kitchens, that was our starting point. We asked them: ‘What can you do to open up those views?’ Our other requirement was that we wanted a nice big space where we could sit as a family with our two boys.”

Richard and Sarah went to KF Kitchens after recommendations from two of Richard’s work colleagues: “They both said how great they were,” explained Sarah.

The firm’s solution was to knock down two walls to make one big room and allow for a huge window stretching almost the length of the room, with steel supports above. The result? An immediate ‘wow’ factor, a room full of light, and much, much more than a kitchen.

When it came to the kitchen design, Sarah says she and Richard had ‘a vague outline’ of what they wanted: “But when we sat down with Nathan and Derinda, it was clear that our outline just wouldn’t work,” she said.

“They spent two hours with us, talking through what would work, illustrating everything on their software system. What they came up with was a much better solution in terms of where everything should go to optimise the space and the views.

“We knew what style of kitchen we wanted and what colour – dark grey – but again, Nathan and Derinda suggested that a lighter shade of grey would work better in this

light. And they were right.”

The advice went right down to the finer details: “Nathan was really good with the minutiae,” explained Sarah. “For example, telling us that the hob should be fitted nearer the window because that’s where you spend most time when you’re in the kitchen, and the sink shouldn’t be near the window because you spend very little time there.

“Their advice was so specific and so well thought-out, there was no generic advice at all. It was completely bespoke for our particular space and light. We were very pleased with the entire design process.”

Richard and Sarah chose a kitchen from the Burbidge Kew range. The Kew is a fresher, sharper take on the traditional shaker form, with a luxury painted finish that accentuates the Kew door design and reveals the desirable, unique patterning of the solid ash framing.

The range offers bespoke colours and Richard and Sarah chose painted wood in slate and French light grey, on a light oak coloured carcase with T&G panels on all ends. They were able to choose from the wide accessory package that’s available with Kew, to ensure the very best kitchen design options. Made-to-measure door sizes and curved doors are also available with the range.

When the work got under way, Richard and Sarah were able to sit back, while KF Kitchens took control of everything: “We’d had an experience before, at a previous house, where we tried to manage a project ourselves and we were dealing with lots of different firms. That was very stressful.

“With KF Kitchens, they do it all for you – and the team is fantastic. We were very impressed with all the workers – the plumber, electrician, painter and decorator, builder, kitchen fitter, and the worktop fitter from Mayflower Stone. They were very nice people as well, and they cleaned up after themselves throughout the work, which we also appreciated.”

The kitchen was completed in June – perfect timing to make the most of the summer sunshine streaming in through the window: “We are delighted with our kitchen,” said

What is the difference between Life Cover and Critical Illness cover?

Life insurance is a way of helping your family cope financially when you die. It is intended to provide help to your loved ones when they can’t rely on your salary or income any longer.

The pay-out can be used to clear debts, pay off the mortgage or just cover everyday expenses. It could even pay for your funeral if you haven’t set anything aside for that.

Critical illness cover pays out a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a serious condition during the policy term.

Do I need Life cover if my employer pays out if anything happens to me.

It depends, your employer might offer death-in-service benefit – this pays out a lump sum, usually four times your annual salary if you die while in employment.

While it can be a valuable benefit, you might need to take out additional cover depending on certain factors, such as how much you owe on your mortgage, as well as any financial provisions for your dependants’ future. Very few employers offer Critical Illness cover so this is also something to consider.

This is dependent on your circumstances, but the right income protection (IP) policy can be valuable as a stand-alone product or as an addition to life insurance/critical illness cover. Some IP policies include an element of death cover.

Drowning (in plastic) – catch Judy’s performancewith-amessage

If you’ve been out and about on the Hoe or in the city centre this summer, you might have come across environmental artist Judy Harington.

Judy has been turning heads and sparking conversations with her performance installation, Drowning (in plastic). In it, she dons a fish mask and invites members of the public to throw plastic containers over her while she’s locked in a metal cage.

If you haven’t managed to catch any of her public performances yet, she’ll be performing it again when she throws open her doors for this year’s Plymouth Art Trail, organised by the Drawn to the Valley collective of professional artists.

Judy is one of 21 Drawn to the Valley artists taking part in the trail, which for the first time this year is run in conjunction with Plymouth Art Weekender (PAW). The trail takes place at various locations across the city over nine days from 22-30 September, with PAW being held on 28-30 September.

Like last year, the open studios in the trail will be signposted by yellow chairs. You’ll find Judy’s at 21, Whiteford Road, PL3 5LU, where she is sharing her studio with another Mannamead artist, Anna Kaminski.

The work will be exhibited in the hallway and spacious rooms downstairs as well as in her studio on the Friday and both Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-6pm. On Sunday 30 September at 2pm, weather permitting, Judy will be heading out to the back garden to perform Drowning (in plastic).

The idea, she says, came to her in a dream: “I was in a big glass cylinder, I was being buried in plastic and I couldn’t get out. This is the fulfilment of that vision. The glass was impractical, so I replaced it with a wire cage, which is fitting because it looks like a rubbish bin.

crying, which draws people’s attention, and then I ‘swim’ into the empty cage. I have three assistants dressed in black and with bright yellow rubber gloves, yellow being a symbol of toxicity, and they lock me in. I realise I’m trapped and there’s no escaping.”

There are four sacks of plastic, all hand-picked and washed and checked for sharp edges, which Judy’s assistants begin to throw in: “I chuck it back out, but then more and more keeps being thrown in. The important thing is that the assistants encourage the public to join in. Audience participation is vital because by getting up and chucking the plastic in, they feel implicated in it.”

Judy is completely covered in the plastic and the whale sounds die out: “This has a big effect on the children. They look for me and are very anxious about where the fish has gone.” She eventually emerges as a human, without the fish head, and is horrified at the sight of all the plastic: “I try to eat it, which again is important because it’s saying there is no use for these containers other than it’s convenient.”

Finally, the cage door bursts open and the public are invited to help clear up all the plastic: “This is the realisation that we are part of the solution, that what we are doing on a personal level is very relevant.

Judy works in a variety of media, including painting, mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, photography and printmaking – she is currently experimenting with ancient Japanese methods of printmaking.

As with her installation, much of her work reflects her concern for the marine environment. She has started to do ‘nature’ prints,

with seaweed and beachcombed plastic, using hand-ground rocks from the beach to create the pigment. Her studio walls, meanwhile, are covered in paintings done after a visit to the National Marine Aquarium: “I was fascinated by the fish watching me watching them through the glass.

This is Judy’s Plymouth Art Trail debut, and she has invited Anna Kaminski to join her in her open studio: “Anna’s paintings and textile paintings of flowers and landscapes are beautiful. The contrast complements what I do, so people will see a wide variety of work.”

Plymouth Art Trail is part of Drawn to the Valley’s Open Studios, which this year has 100 of the group’s 160 artists taking part throughout the Tamar Valley. One of the organisers in Plymouth, artist Gay Kent, said: “It’s a fun thing for families to do. It’s a chance for people to meet the artists and buy unique, affordable art. And it’s a way of discovering different parts of the city.”

The group’s ambition is for the trail to grow as big as those in other major cities: “We’d love to hear from other artists who’d like to be part of it in the years to come,” said Gay. By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre As a garden centre situated in a city, we find that the vast majority of our customers either have gardens on the smaller side or courtyards, and with the increasing amount of housing developments being built through the city, the gardens on these new builds are getting smaller and smaller.

Designing a garden for a small space can be extremely challenging, but there are plenty of tips and tricks to make it feel larger than it is, but still maintaining an intimate, cosy feeling.

Blurring and disguising the boundaries of your garden will make it seem larger than it is. If you can’t see where the garden starts and ends, then you will have less of an idea of its size, making it seem more spacious.

Disguising the perimeter of your garden can be done in a number of ways. The easiest way is to plant climbers that will scramble and climb over fences, walls and trellises, completely clothing them.

Mixing evergreen climbers with deciduous climbers will give you the best range of cover and choice. You can enjoy the year round cover of the evergreen climbers such as Trachelopermum jasminoides, Hydrangea seemanii, Lonicera japonica, Clematis armandii and enjoy the bold, vibrant colours of deciduous climbers, such as Clematis hydrids, Clematis viticella, Lonicera periclymenum, Passiflora and Parthenocissus.

Use your walls and fences as an opportunity to do some vertical gardening. Create a green wall, which can be achieved in many different ways, from a simple low tech setup, to a high tech hydroponic system.

A low tech set up will be much more achievable for most people, and it consists of stapling weed control membrane to a fence or wall, screwing wooden batons horizontally on top of the weed control, then taking a section of the weed control and stapling it to the baton. This will create a planting pocket.

Repeat this at 30cm (12in) intervals from the top of the fence to the floor. Fill the pockets with a John Innes based compost, mixed with a slow release fertiliser and it will be ready to plant.

Plants such as Alpines, grasses, ferns, Heucheras, Hostas and low growing herbaceous perennials are perfect to use.

Bedding plants can even be used to inject a bit of seasonal colour. Just remember to keep it well watered and fed periodically and it will be a beautiful addition to any small garden.

If that seems a little daunting, then you could also use hanging baskets and window boxes for extra planting spaces.

Another good way to distract your eye from the boundaries of your garden is to use several focal points in the garden to draw your eye to. These will capture your focus and draw your eyes to them rather than what’s going on around them.

Mirrors are great in small gardens. They can be used to reflect light around the garden, helping to brighten up dull, shady corners. They can also be used to look like viewing windows into another part of the garden, or simply used as a reflection of the garden, making it appear larger than it is.

Create garden rooms. Sectioning off a small garden may seem counterproductive, but dividing it into sections where you can see the end of the garden from the start, makes it feel much more spacious. It allows you to create a journey through the garden.

Paint walls, brick work and garden furniture white. This will help brighten and lighten up the space and reflect more light around the garden.

Painting fences black or dark brown will blend into the background and help to highlight the plants in front of them, putting the focus on the plants.

Create raised beds. This gives the garden layers and creates the illusion of depth, which in turn makes the space feel bigger. If the raised bed has been created using sleepers or walls, then a lip can be added to the top of it and it can double up as extra seating.

Don’t be afraid to use big plants or plants with large leaves as they will help make the space appear larger. This advice may seem counter-productive for a small garden, but it’s all about creating a sense of order. Planted among smaller types larger specimens provide a resting spot for the eye.

To maximise your garden without encroaching on limited patio or seating space, plants of different heights for example, a lollipop topiary, will give you a desired vertical element, but also preserves space below for other plants of medium height.

This layered approach allows you to plant more, without looking cramped or crowed. Texture is another way to create visual interest and movement without overwhelming the viewer, grasses and plants that flower on long stems such as Alliums, Agapanthus or Verbena can provide height and movement, without obstructing too much of the view and provide a great foil for plants with larger, bolder flowers.

I have a small city back garden that is only 4m wide by 8m in length. I had previously grown a tropical style garden, but it was largely destroyed during the very cold, extended winter we had. So rather than getting depressed about it and feel defeated, I decided to use it as an opportunity to revamp the entire garden.

I wanted to make it more spacious, while maintaining the dense planting I had, but without feeling overgrown. I also wanted to make it attractive and nourishing for wildlife. I installed a large light coloured patio that instantly brightened up the space and gave it a feeling of openness.

I decided to raise the borders on either side of the pathway.

This made the path feel wider and the borders bigger. The lightness of the wood edging also helps keep the area bright and spacious. In the borders, I used tall plants at the back, and dropping down in size helped to increase the impression of width.

By choosing plants that flower at different times or have a long flowering period, I ensured a continuous season of colour from spring until autumn. Overall, my garden now feels wider and bigger, but also lighter and brighter.

Pots are great for smaller garden where planting space is limited. They are extremely versatile and can be moved around or replanted to suit the seasons for constant colour. Not only do planters allow you to take advantage of small spaces, they also create flexibility, which is vital in a restricted space.

If you want to make room on the deck to accommodate a large table, barbecue or host a party, then just move some planters out of the way. Alternating pots in different heights is also a great way to achieve a layered look.

In June 2018, shocking news headlines began to emerge about the death of more than 450 patients after being given powerful painkillers inappropriately at

An independent panel found that taking into account missing records, a further 200 patients may have suffered a similar fate. Their report found there was a “disregard for human life” of a large number of patients from 1989 to 2000. The panel found an “institutionalised regime” of prescribing and administering “dangerous” amounts of a medication not clinically justified at the Hampshire hospital. The doctor behind the prescription scandal is Dr Jane Ann Barton, a former GP who worked at Forton Medical Centre in Gosport, and was employed for five sessions a week as a clinical assistant in the Department of Medicine for Elderly People at Gosport War Memorial Hospital from 1 May 1988 until her resignation on 5 July 2000.

In early July 2018, a neonatal nurse was arrested on suspicion of the murder of eight babies and the attempted murder of another six newborns at one NHS hospital.

Lucy Letby, 28, has been bailed without charge pending further police investigations in connections with the deaths at Countess of Chester Hospital. Police said they are investigating the deaths of 17 babies and 15 non-fatal collapses between June 2015 and June 2016.

These cases have chilling parallels with that of the GP Dr Harold Shipman, who’s practices were investigated in 1998,

resulting in his conviction for 15 murders. An inquiry in July 2002 established that he had killed at least 215 people, and may have killed as many as 260, although the true number could be even higher.

Doctors are meant to preserve life and cause no harm.

The Hippocratic Oath, written 2,500 years ago, includes the line: “I will use treatments for the benefit of the ill in accordance with my ability and my judgment, but from what is to their harm and injustice I will keep them”.

Similarly, nurses and midwives are bound by a code of professional conduct which requires them to make sure that their patients are safe and do not come to harm.

So how is it, that despite the checks and balances which have been introduced to protect patients, these events are still happening? The “blame culture” in the NHS has to change to avoid more scandals like the Gosport War Memorial Hospital deaths, the then Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said, that it was still too difficult for whistleblowers to raise concerns about mistakes being made. Despite the introduction of a statutory duty of candor which places an obligation on health care providers to tell patients when things have gone wrong, and the protection from disciplinary action for those who report problems and concerns from inside the organization, there is still an apparent lack of regard and often little action taken too late by managers when reports of adverse incidents are made by staff, patients and relatives. Until this changes, and practices are made more transparent and accountable, then despite the thousands of positive treatment episodes and good outcomes happening in hundreds of NHS hospitals every single day, the advent of another “Shipman or Barton” always remains a possibility and sadly it is these sensational headlines that grab our attention, rather than the dedicated and lifesaving work undertaken by the NHS every day.
