Risky Business – The challenges of being an Executor

When a loved one asks you to be an Executor of their Will, the natural answer is to say yes. Why would you say no?

Sadly many people take on the position of an Executor of a Will without really understanding the personal liabilities which fall upon them, let alone the time that it will take to complete formalities.

The duty of an Executor is to administer the deceased’s estate in line with the terms of the Will. Simple you say, but are you prepared to :•

Write to the banks, building societies, pension providers, insurance companies, share registrars to obtain the details required.

•

Write to any creditors

•

Obtain property valuation and ensure that buildings and contents insurance remain in place

•

Instigate Trustee Act Notices

•

Search the National Will Register to ensure you are administering the correct Will

•

Open an Executors bank account to keep estate funds separate from your own.

•

Instigate an Asset Search to ensure all assets held by the deceased are located

•

Complete a tax return of up to 16 pages plus related schedules

•

Fill out a Personal Probate Application and liaise with the Probate Registry

•

Once the Grant of Representation is issued to then write to all interested parties again to arrange release of funds to the estate

•

Sell the property

•

Clear the property for sale

•

Identify all beneficiaries

•

Prepare detailed estate accounts for residuary beneficiaries to approve before you pay out the funds on the estate in accordance with the Will

•

Ensure all income tax and inheritance tax is paid prior to distributing the estate

•

Carry out bankruptcy searches

•

Release estate funds and obtain receipts.

Not an insignificant list of work, but have you also considered your personal liability?

As an Executor you have a duty to act in the best interests of the beneficiaries which includes preserving the estate to ensure that there is not a loss to the estate whilst the administration takes place.

You must also ensure that you check that none of the beneficiaries are bankrupt or in receipt of means tested benefits. Failure to report to the correct authorities that the inheritance is due to the beneficiary could land you in deep water.

You could be personally liable to pay a creditor who comes forward after you have distributed the estate if you have not advertised the Trustee Act notices in the appropriate publications.

Have you considered that there could be a claim against the estate under the Inheritance (Provisions for Family and Dependants) Act 1975? Failure to do so could mean that you are personally liable to pay the claimant his/her award if the beneficiaries refuse to refund their share of the claim.

As you can see an Executor’s role can be an onerous task.

Women who inspire us...

It’s a sad fact that anxiety, stress and depression affect so many people in today’s high pressure society.

And it’s causing problems for more and more young people who struggle to find purpose and destiny in their lives. All this, combined with diminishing resources, mean that more and more people of all ages are crippled with mental health issues.

It’s encouraging then, to report on the success of Hayley Silk, a Plymouth-based life coach, who has produced a self-help book called Be a Warrior not a Worrier.

Published just a few months ago it has already won an award as the best motivational self-help book of the year.

We have an interview with Hayley in this issue which outlines her experiences and explains some of the practical solutions she has found helped her deal with being a worrier.

We have other health-related features in this issue, including the story of Amelia Ayres, a young Plymouth woman who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) as a teenager. Struggling with the lack of support available Amelia took matters in her own hands and set up a Facebook forum for people with MS in the UK. It already has more than a 1,000 members, despite only being established a few weeks ago.

We also talk to Laura Fraser-Crewes who is heading up the Sunflower Women’s Centre in Hyde Park, which offers a lifeline for women who have a variety of challenging issues in their lives.

It’s encouraging to be able to report on these initiatives and to know that there are women amongst us who are determined to make a difference.

Hayley’s top tips for beating anxiety Hayley Silk won’t be forgetting 2018 in a hurry. She started the year as ‘Hayley Silk: certified life coach’. To that, she can now add ‘award-winning author’.

Hayley’s debut book, Be a Warrior not Worrier, won the Best Motivational Self-Help Category in the 2018 Independent Book Awards: “I think I spent the whole day going around, saying ‘I won!’, said Hayley.

The book was published in April and officially launched at a signing event at Waterstone’s in New George Street: “The store had a queue for over an hour and Waterstone’s told me it was the best launch event for a local author they’d ever had. So, all in all, it’s been a pretty amazing year.”

There’s more to come too, because the button is about to be pressed on a second print run, with the Independent Book Awards stamp on the front cover and a review from the charity, Anxiety UK, on the back: “Anxiety UK is one of the UK’s biggest mental health organisations, so to get a good review from them is a real commendation.”

And yet, not so long ago, it would have been Hayley in the queue at Waterstones, eager to buy the book.

Chatting at her home in Sherford, Hayley, 36, explains she could never have written the book if she hadn’t experienced anxiety herself. It was after she’d sought help to overcome her “worrier” tendency, that she decided to use her skills and experience to help others combat it, too.

“I qualified as a life coach when I was 24 but I didn’t have the life experiences at that stage to do anything about it,” she said. “So for a while I worked in HR, where my coaching skills were helpful. But when we were all made redundant, I was in a bad place. I was extremely worried about the future and about money. It took me six months to admit anything was wrong. That was the first step to doing something about it.”

In early 2016, Hayley attended a stress course at Livewell South West: “The course had a section on worry and it was just fantastic. That’s what resonated, it hit me for the first time that I was a worrier. There wasn’t really anything wrong

HEALTH MATTERS with me other than that. Once I acknowledged that, I was able to change my perspective. I saw that there was the opportunity for life to offer me something better than what I’d lost. Being made redundant was like my life sending me a message, it was making me look somewhere else.”

The enforced change gave Hayley the opportunity to become a life coach and write Be a Warrior not Worrier.

The book looks at 12 of the biggest reasons we worry and offers an approach for each of them. Chapters include selfimage, health, career, money, failure, change, loss, and the future. Each chapter ends with a page of powerful points that the reader can refer to whenever they need: “I wanted the book to be like a friend, somewhere that people could turn to,” said Hayley.

“In fact, a lot of people have said it’s like having a friend with them, talking to them. One woman told me: ‘The book has completely changed the way I think’. She’d been seeing a counsellor but has cancelled her counselling because she no longer needs it.”

Hayley says that worrying is natural. But, she adds: “The problem arises when we get completely caught up in it and it holds us back. This is when worrying stops us from being the best we can be. Unaddressed, it’s can fuel mental health issues.”

So what are Hayley’s top tips? “It all starts with treating ourselves differently. We’re not as kind to ourselves as we are to our friends or family. One good tip for this is to write your worries down on a piece of paper – that’s a very powerful thing to do in itself. But then answer them as if they were written not by you, but by a friend who is asking you for help.

You might find that the solution is quite simple.

“Another tip is to understand that you have control over your decisions. You can make choices to change something that’s not working, because you do have a choice. And see that change as something that’s good.

“Third, focus on what’s possible. Try to tip the balance towards positivity by practicing gratitude and positivity. It might be hard work at first but eventually it becomes second nature. The brain needs to be trained, just like your body.”

Finally, she says that overcoming worry is down to us going with what our heart tells us: “It’s a heart versus head battle.

The warrior lies in your heart and the worrier lies in your head. So listen to your heart, not that illogical voice in your head.”

For those who book their wedding package at the Mini Wedding Collection, there’s the offer of a discounted deal that could save them hundreds of pounds.

On arrival at the event, couples will be welcomed with canapés and a glass of bubbly and shown around the most popular function rooms, which will be set up as they would be for a wedding.

The Duke of Cornwall’s wedding team and duty managers will be on hand to answer any questions and talk through the venue’s wedding packages. Some of the hotel’s recommended wedding partners will also be there, including a photographer, cake maker, stylist and entertainment.

Wedding coordinator at The Duke, Toni Sharpe, said the event will feel just like a real wedding, with entertainment on stage, the cake and centrepieces on display and wedding stationery on the dressed tables.

“This is our fourth Mini Wedding Collection and the previous three have all been very popular,” said Toni. “It’s designed so that all the couples who come have the time and the opportunity to see the rooms and discuss our various

wedding options in a relaxed atmosphere.”

The Duke offers three main wedding packages – The Drake, The Mayflower and The Grand Duke – with prices starting at £4,950 including VAT. All the packages are based on 65 day guests and 100 evening guests and feature a dedicated wedding coordinator and a master of ceremonies to make sure everything runs like clockwork. The additional Civil Ceremony package is £450 and also includes an MC. However, all the packages are adaptable so that couples can be assured they will get the wedding of their dreams, as Toni explained: “All of our weddings are tailored to each couple’s requirements. For example, some couples want something really informal like an afternoon tea or a fish and chips supper.”

The quality of the food is one of the reasons why so many people choose ‘The Duke’ to take care of their wedding day – the hotel has two rosettes in the AA award scheme. Toni said: “Our chefs invite our wedding couples to come in for a wedding menu taster, so they can sample the dishes. But again, this is very flexible. The head chef, Nicholas, welcomes suggestions and will adapt the menu to meet preferences and dietary requirements.”

The Duke’s renowned customer service is another big reason it’s the Number One wedding choice for many families going back generations. Commendations include a comment from one couple that they were “made to feel like royalty” – an experience reflected in the 5-star wedding reviews on the venue’s Facebook page.

The range of function rooms means the Duke can cater for weddings of all sizes, from 2 people to 300 people. How two dreams came true for Bonne Santé founder Luke

From an empty shell, to the hottest new eatery in Plymouth … welcome to Bonne Santé at the Barbican’s historic Custom House.

For director-founder, Plymouth-born businessman and restaurateur Luke Lauri, Bonne Santé has brought together two long-held dreams: to open a healthy eating venue and to bring the landmark Grade II* listed building back to life again.

Luke jumped at the chance when the building finally became available after years of lying unused: “I’ve had a lot of interest in this building for a long time and I always thought it would make a fantastic restaurant,” said Luke, 29. “There aren’t many better locations are there? Slap bang in the heart of the Barbican.”

Bonne Santé – and boy, has he succeeded, with both the ambience and the menu. To give you a clue as to the food on offer, Bonne Santé translates to ‘good health’ and the restaurant’s slogan is: ‘Skip the diet, just eat healthy.’

For those imagining healthy food to be a couple of lettuce leaves and a tomato, think again! The salads are substantial, while the menu still has pizzas and burgers – but without bad fats.

Everything on the menu is 100% gluten-free, so that diners with a food intolerance can eat safely, and there’s a wide choice of dishes for vegans and vegetarians.

“The concept is something I’ve been working on for a number of years,” explained Luke. “We wanted somewhere that’s unique – a place that’s open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and evening dinner, where people can eat out, guilt-free.”

The restaurant opened in May and the people of Plymouth have welcomed it with open arms: “On a daily basis we’re getting customers who say ‘this is really needed, it should have been here a long time ago’. Hearing people say that they’re enjoying what we’ve put our heart and soul into, that’s the icing on the cake, it’s why we do it.”

Luke creates the menu with his head chef Piotr, who was also his chef when he transformed the city’s former Tap and Barrel pub into The Penguin Lounge, prior to launching Bonne Santé: “All of our food is freshly prepared, with thought-out ingredients,” said Luke. “That means reduced saturated fats, sugar and salt, in fact anything that’s generally bad for us. Yes, you can enjoy the experience of eating out – but afterwards, you don’t feel you’ve over-indulged.”

For example, the Hunters breakfast, like the burgers, contains lean meat and mince only. The slaw is made using Greek yoghurt and the cheese is ‘skinny’. As Luke puts it: “It’s so you can have a naughty, but-not-so naughty treat.”

The restaurant sources its produce from local suppliers, a close relationship that means its gets the ingredients to fit the healthy eating concept. Fish comes direct from Rex

The restaurant’s takeaway service is currently collect-only, but a delivery service is planned soon. The drinks menu also reflects the eatery’s ethos, with the offering including a gluten free lager on tap, ‘slim’ Prosecco and a range of cocktails all under 120 calories.

Having enjoyed a busy first summer, Luke is now working on the next phase – turning Bonne Santé into an all-yearround eatery: “Plymouth City Council has given us permitted use of the space in front of the building for a really nice outdoor dining area, and it was busy all summer. But we need somewhere people can enjoy in the winter months, too.”

To that end, Luke is turning the enclosed courtyard at the back into an area that can be used in winter, with a canopy, heating and lighting: “It’s like a secret place, a hidden gem, and because it’s enclosed, it’s sheltered from the elements” said Luke. “The building itself offers so much potential. We’re looking to draw in the natural warmth of the building by opening up the chimney and having candles everywhere.”

The courtyard is another eye-catching use of the building’s space. At the front, as you pass in through the archway, there’s a terrace which wouldn’t look out of place in the Med. Inside, there’s a bar area that Luke Lauri leads into the main restaurant space and a room at the far end where the fire will be lit during autumn and winter.

Off the main room, leading to the courtyard, is the Customs House Room, where Luke is in the process of decking the walls with historic images. Both this room and the courtyard are available for functions and special occasions, including Christmas events.

Luke admits that the venture has been “a huge gamble”. But he’s already looking ahead: “I’m one of those people who’s always looking to grow and improve. If this continues to do well and in 12-18 months’ time we find we are in a very comfortable position, then we will look to open Bonne Santé in other locations in the South West.” Watch this space!

KF Kitchens make light work of fabulous kitchen

Question: How do you transform a hallway and two small rooms into one stunning kitchen and living space, opening up the fabulous views outside?

Answer: Call in the experts from awardwinning independent Plymouth firm, KF Kitchens, run by Nathan and Derinda Damarell and Simon Rice.

That’s exactly what Richard and Sarah Ackland did at their beautiful home overlooking the golf course at St Mellion in Cornwall. The couple bought the house in 2016, always with the intention of creating a large downstairs room to make the most of the lovely view.

“The two rooms that were here before were very small and dark and didn’t make the most of the views,” said Sarah. “When we contacted KF Kitchens, that was our starting point.

We asked them: ‘What can you do to open up those views?’ Our other requirement was that we wanted a nice big space where we could sit as a family with our two boys.”

Richard and Sarah went to KF Kitchens after recommendations from two of Richard’s work colleagues: “They both said how great they were,” explained Sarah.

The firm’s solution was to knock down two walls to make one big room and allow for a huge window stretching almost the length of the room, with steel supports above. The result? An immediate ‘wow’

factor, a room full of light, and much, much more than kitchen.

When it came to the kitchen design, Sarah says she and Richard had “a vague outline” of what they wanted: “But when we sat down with Nathan and Derinda, it was clear that our outline just wouldn’t work,” she said.

“They spent two hours with us, talking through what would work, illustrating everything on their software system. What they came up with was a much better

solution in terms of where everything should go to optimise the space and the views.

“We knew what style of kitchen we wanted and what colour – dark grey – but again, Nathan and Derinda suggested that a lighter shade of grey would work better in this light. And they were right.”

Richard and Sarah chose a kitchen from the Burbidge Kew range. The Kew is

a fresher, sharper take on the traditional shaker form, with a luxury painted finish that accentuates the Kew door design and reveals the desirable, unique patterning of the solid ash framing.

The range offers bespoke colours and Richard and Sarah chose painted wood in slate and French light grey, on a light oak coloured carcase with T&G panels on all ends.

They were able to choose from the wide accessory package that’s available with Kew, to ensure the very best kitchen design options. Made-to-measure door sizes and curved doors are also available with the range.

The kitchen was completed in June – perfect timing to make the most of the summer sunshine streaming in through the window: “We are delighted with our kitchen,” said Sarah. “It has completely transformed our home.

“The new kitchen is a great place to sit and socialise with friends. And the design means I can have the boys in here with me while I’m cooking. It’s very familyfriendly, which is what we wanted.

“We would happily recommend KF Kitchens to other people.”

Nov 9 REMEMBRANCE FESTIVAL On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the guns of Europe fell silent. After four years of the most bitter and devastating fighting, the Great War was finally over. The first Remembrance Day was conducted in 1919 throughout Britain and the Commonwealth.

Originally called Armistice Day, it commemorated the end of hostilities the previous year. It came to symbolise the end of the war and provide an opportunity to remember those who had died.

After the end of the Second World War in 1945, Armistice Day became Remembrance Day to include all those who had fallen in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

David’s walking tall again - thanks to Foot Solutions Pensioner David Carr and his wife Patricia loved nothing more than taking a leisurely walk in and around the city - but all that was brought to a halt when he started to suffer extreme pain in his feet.

Retired coachbuilder David, who is 70, said: “The trouble started a little while ago and the pain in my instep and under my toes was absolutely horrific. It meant that we couldn’t enjoy our walks any more.”

He and Patricia had moved to Devonport from Yorkshire two years ago to be nearer their son who is in the Royal Marines.

He originally trained as a plumber, but then spent many years as a publican before joining a coach building firm in his native Sheffield.

Although relatively new to Plymouth, David was aware of Foot Solutions and decided to visited their store in Royal Parade. “I just felt that enough was enough. The pain was taking all the joy out of my retirement and I hoped that the people at Foot Solutions would be able to help me.

“The staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

They carried out an extensive assessment of my feet and identified the need for custom-made orthotic insoles to support my insteps,” said David.

“I purchased off-the-shelf insoles while the custom-made supports were being manufactured as well as some shoes which are ideal for people who enjoy walking,” he said.

“The insoles have made a massive difference and I can enjoy walking again without any pain.”

In fact David is not only walking - he is also playing football, walking football that is!

“My son’s partner suggested I should give it a try. I play at Goals in Plymouth and thoroughly enjoy it. It wouldn’t have been possible without Foot Solutions.”

Plymouth Comedy Club’s next show on October 6 at the Plymouth Athenaeum features Andre Vincent, Meryl O’Rourke and Scott Bennett with MC Chris Brooker.

Headliner Andre Vincent is a man familiar to anyone who’s been a regular at the Comedy Store in London or any of the nation’s top flight clubs.

Hailing back to the original days of the alternative circuit and with his roots deeply planted in British variety, this phenomenal entertainer has trodden the boards worldwide.

One part everyman, one part showbiz tour de force...

The popular Plymouth 10k returns on October 7

Theatre. Throughout the weekend visitors can sample the delights of everything from lobster to whelk, as well as learning some new cooking techniques. Join in the fish auction of the day’s freshly caught catch; all contributions support the Fisherman’s Mission charity. Visitors will be spoilt for choice with the huge selection of delicious food stalls to enjoy, and the children will love the crabbing competition taking place from 2.30pm along the harbour side by the Boathouse Café on Sunday.

Children will have plenty of activities to get involved in throughout the weekend, including CaterEd’s kids kitchen with the hands-on cookery fun and activities, where they can learn about local produce through touch and taste. Another highlight of the weekend sees the return of the fantastic Cardboard Boat Race, which will be on Commercial Wharf on Saturday. Build a boat out of nothing but a few bits of cardboard and some sticky tape, and sail it around a course in Plymouth harbour. The winner is the last one to sink! Teams can either opt into the pre-build option or build on the day. Join in the fun and support this fantastic charity at the RNLI open day, on Commercial Wharf. This family fun event will provide the opportunity to chat to the RNLI volunteers and explore the lifeboats and rescue equipment. the Rockfish Crab Festival on Sunday will feature live music throughout the

Sept 23 BUBBLE RUSH 2018 Foam filled family fun as you walk, jog or run through colourful bubble foam stations! Children’s Hospice South West are bringing the brilliant Bubble Rush to the historic estate of Newnham Park – a fantastic new event for Britain’s Ocean city and its surrounding areas. Run, jog or walk through 5k of colourful bubble stations where foam cannons will shower you in frothy bubbles - something for the children and big kids alike! The course is 2.5k circular route which means all of our participants get double the bubbles by completing the course twice. Bubble Rush is open to all ages so why not get together a team of family, friends or colleagues and join the newest event in our colourful calendar.

Exhibition features work of talented Plymouth College of Art graduates Featuring painting, drawing, sculptural installation, moving image, design, glass and ceramics, the Plymouth College of Art MA Show 2018 will present postgraduate research undertaken within the college community of practice.

The exhibition will take place in the dedicated studios and research spaces of the college’s Graduate School, which is open to the public from September 20 to 29 from 9am to 5pm weekdays and 10am to 2pm Saturdays, with a late opening on September 28 as part of Plymouth Art Weekender.

The docks and naval base made it a target resulting in the almost total destruction of the city centre and the displacement of tens of thousands of Plymothians.

The city we see today epitomises the ambition and vision of post war planning. This exhibition includes fascinating objects, images and footage from the collection of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the South West Film and Television Archive that explores the themes of destruction and reconstruction.

Co-ordinated by Visual Arts Plymouth and funded through Horizon, a collaborative two year programme of visual contemporary arts, funded through Arts Council England’s Ambition for Excellence fund and delivered by a partnership between Plymouth Culture, University of Plymouth, The Box, Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth Arts Centre, KARST and Visual Arts Plymouth. For more information visit www.plymouthartweekender.com Sep 28 - Oct 21 THE ATLANTIC PROJECT The Atlantic Project is a pilot for a new international festival of contemporary art in the South West of England. Plymouth is a city built upon visions of the future. As a deep water port, facing the Atlantic Ocean, its history is bound up with maritime exploration, in pursuit of the unknown worlds that lie over the horizon. In the lead up to Mayflower 400 in 2020, marking the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers’ voyage from Plymouth to the so-called ‘New World’ in North America, the aim is to test out the elements that will make up a new ‘biennial’ festival in the UK.

Raku at 45 Southside This autumn 45 Southside’s exhibition focuses on raku fired ceramics. Five talented Devon and Cornwall based artists will be showing their latest raku work.

The raku technique originates from 16th century Japan and is a process in which pottery that once fired and then removed from the kiln is subjected to post-firing reduction (or smoking) by being placed in containers of combustible materials such as sawdust.

The smoke blackens raw clay and causes crazing in the glaze surface. The crazing is a distinctive feature particular to the raku technique and a certain amount of unpredictability to this process makes every piece unique. Due to this process the finished pottery has an aroma of ambers.

The gallery also welcomes a new artist: California born Mary Kaun-English.

She creates pit-fired and burnished sculptural pieces, a technique in which clay is polished to a beautiful sheen without the use of glaze.

The participating artists are Dan Chapple, Sarah McCormack, Tim Welbourne, Christina Peters and Mary Kaun-English all creating their unique style using a similar firing technique. Works on display are classical shapes and forms, animal figurines (watch the tapirs), cottages, double-walled bowls, vases, bottles and abstract sculptural pieces all showing off their distinctive raku features.

The exhibition will run from September 22 to October 30.

Great news for all P&O cruisers, Star Wars fans and solo travellers

I begin this month’s article with some great news for all of you who sail on P&O Cruises.

They will be scrapping the daily service charge onboard its entire fleet next year. This decision will come into effect for all sailings from May 2019.

Passengers’ bills will not include a discretionary charge – which is currently £7 per passenger per

By Travel Expert night for the service received onboard. P & O have confirmed that the crews pay will not be affected by this decision, and passengers who want to pay a service charge can visit reception during their cruise.

This is a very bold move by P & O as most other cruise lines do add on gratuities. Some are as much as $18 per person per night. So why have they decided to do this now?

Personally, I think it’s a very clever move. P&O will be launching their new ship ‘The Iona’ in 2020 which is a 5,500-passenger ship. To continue the growth of cruising, and to fill their ships new and old, they will need ‘new to

cruise’ customers who have, in the past, avoided cruising and holidayed on land.

I feel by taking away the stigma of tipping, more will look at cruising as a holiday style, knowing exactly what they are paying before they go. It will be very interesting over the next couple of months to see if others follow suit. Watch this space!

Having only recently returned from a holiday in Florida, I was intrigued to read the details of a new hotel which is being built by Disney in their new Star Wars-themed land.

The Star Wars Hotel will be built in the form of a star ship, filled with characters and stories that will unfold during your stay. The property, which is being built on the south side of Disney’s Hollywood studios and is due to open in late 2019, will allow guests to fully immerse themselves in a Star Wars storyline.

To add to the feeling, every cabin window in the lobby, restaurants and bedrooms will have a view of space. Your hotel stay will be turned into a multi-day adventure, where guests can participate as a resident of the Galaxy by dressing in Star Wars-style costumes from the moment you check-in.

You will be able to interact with members of staff who will act like characters from the movies. Staff will remain in character at all times according to Disney. The experience will touch every single minute of a person’s day, as each guest is

given their own storyline to act out during their stay.

The hotel will also be connected to the Star Wars ‘Galaxy Edge Land’ so guests can ‘build a reputation’ at the park that will follow them back to the hotel.

I have had a number of enquiries from clients who are interested in booking this amazing hotel and expect it to be sold out very quickly when it goes on sale. You will have to stay in the hotel for a set period, proposed to be three nights, so that all residents are part of the whole experience for the duration.

I would expect the prices for this unique experience to be very expensive and will update you when I have more details.

Travelling on your own, especially for the first time, can be a very daunting experience. My first choice of tour operator for a solo traveller would be ‘Just You Holidays’.

Amelia’s MS support group goes nationwide

Story by Laura Joint Amelia Ayres felt for some time that something wasn’t quite right with her health, but she couldn’t put her finger on what it could be.

Headaches, pins and needles and a general feeling of being unwell didn’t just leave her baffled, it had her GP scratching his head, too: “I knew something was wrong,” said Amelia, from Peverell.

“The headaches I was getting were like nothing I’d had before, so I went to my GP in March 2013 but all the tests he did kept ruling things out.”

He was so concerned about the symptoms that he referred her for an MRI brain scan at Derriford: “I remember it really well, it was 25 November 2013. I just wanted to know what was wrong. But I didn’t get the results until January. When the results did come through I was out with my mum when my GP called me to say: ‘Could you come in first thing tomorrow morning please because we’ve found something I’d like to discuss with you’.”

That “something” was a number of lesions on Amelia’s brain: “My GP said: ‘I think it’s MS’. I had no idea what that involved but I knew it was probably serious because I had to see a neurologist at Derriford that same week. I went up there for tests and was told to go home and fetch a bag because

I’d be in for a week.”

The tests, some of them invasive and painful, confirmed the earlier likely diagnosis: “After the tests, the neurologist came to me and said: ‘We’re really confused. Other patients with the same severity are in wheelchairs and can’t walk’. He didn’t understand how I was still walking. But it was clear from what he said that my condition could get worse.”

MS is a neurological and autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakes part of the nervous system as a foreign substance and attacks it by mistake. It can be extremely debilitating, causing those with MS to suffer symptoms including fatigue, pain, numbness, tingling, eye problems, spasms, difficulty with speech, and immobility.

Amelia, now 24, has relapsing remitting MS, which means symptoms come and go. Her symptoms currently include fatigue, headaches, poor speech and memory, blurred vision, tingling and numbness, cramp in her legs and arms, and weakness which means that she is unable to walk for long on most days: “I can do about a third of a mile and then my legs feel like tree trunks.

“Some days I know a word in my head, but my brain won’t let me say it. On other days I find it hard to stay awake.” She must have an MRI scan on her spine and brain

every year. Her most recent scan in July showed no change to the lesions compared to June 2017.

Amelia has another condition linked to MS, trigeminal neuralgia, which causes episodes of severe pain in her head and her fingers. And the MS treatment has led to other health issues. Her treatment in early 2014 was a type of chemotherapy for leukaemia which at the time wasn’t licenced for MS but was considered potentially beneficial. A second course followed in 2015.

One side effect of the chemotherapy was an overactive thyroid gland, which was so severe Amelia underwent a thyroidotomy in October last year. She will be on thyroid medication for the rest of her life. The thyroid problems have also left her with another autoimmune condition, Graves’ disease.

But she believes she made the right decision to have the chemotherapy – which is now licenced for MS: “Who’s to say I wouldn’t be in a wheelchair now if I hadn’t had the chemo?

I had it because I didn’t want to get worse, I didn’t want to be in a wheelchair. So even though the treatment caused other issues, I do feel it has helped.”

Amelia’s experiences have led her to start a Facebook group for people in the UK affected by MS – those who’ve been diagnosed or are displaying symptoms, and family members. MS UK is a closed group for members only.

It was set up at the end of July and already has over 1,000 members from all parts of the UK. Amelia wanted a supportive place where people could share their stories and advice: “I didn’t expect it to get so big! But everybody has been saying ‘at last, we really needed something like this, a UK and Ireland group, where we can all discuss things that are relevant to us here.’

“What we find very frustrating is that often, MS is invisible.

A big discussion in the group is the trouble people are having getting the Personal Independent Payment because they

don’t look disabled. And yet we face the prospect of being in pain or immobile for the rest of our lives.

“I sometimes think that if everyone in the world had MS for just one day, then they’d know what MS is. But if you don’t have MS, you can’t understand it. That’s why having the group is so nice, to have supportive people who do understand.”

People with MS can suffer depression and anxiety, another reason why having a support network is important. Amelia lives at home with her mum and younger sister and she also gets a lot of support from her dad, elder brother and grandparents. When Amelia’s treatment first started, it meant the end of her job as a chief executive’s PA: “It’s very frustrating not being able to work. But by setting up the group, I feel I’m contributing.”

One of the first members of MS UK was Danielle Rogers-Atkinson, from Exeter.

Danielle, 40, was diagnosed with relapsing remitting MS in 2014. She said: “MS UK has been a great support to me, it’s been fantastic to be able to talk with other members who are going through the same things as I am.”

So what are Amelia’s future plans for MS UK? She said: “I want to raise awareness and understanding more widely, so people with MS feel they’re not alone. I have shared the group with the MS Society on its Facebook page and I’d like to be able support the charity’s work.

“Long-term, I’d love our group to help fundraise and campaign for more research to be done into MS so we can find a cure.”

I want a divorce – what are my options?

“I want a divorce. I’ve thought long and hard about this and I just can’t live with my husband or wife anymore. Its not one thing; its lots of things, I just can’t live with them anymore. It’s been a difficult decision to make but I am certain that I would like a divorce”.

As matrimonial solicitors, this is the sort of conversation we often have with clients when we meet them for the first time. We explain to our clients that there is only one ground for divorce; that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. To satisfy the court that there has been an irretrievable breakdown, the person who instigates divorce proceedings, also known as the Petitioner, must prove one of the following five facts: (a) Adultery (b) Unreasonable behaviour (c) Desertion (d) Two years’ separation with consent (e) Five years’ separation

Adultery and unreasonable behaviour are the two facts which are most often relied upon by divorcing couples. This is normally because once a decision to divorce has been made, people don’t then want to wait two years before starting proceedings.

Unreasonable behaviour often sounds like it will be acrimonious but that does not need to be the case. The Petitioner (the person instigating the divorce) must show that the Respondent (their spouse) has behaved in such a way that the Petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to continue to live with them. The test is subjective, so the Court will consider what is unreasonable to the Petitioner and the impact of the Respondent’s behaviour on them specifically. For behaviour to be ‘unreasonable’ it does not have to be extreme. A combination of less obviously unreasonable behaviour can be enough.

It is common to try and agree the allegations of behaviour with your spouse to avoid any undue distress. Beware however; if you cannot get

your spouse’s agreement to the allegations of behaviour and they decide to defend the divorce petition, the Court may not allow your divorce to proceed. In the recent widely publicised case of Owens v Owens, where Mr Owens defended his wife’s petition, the court refused to allow Mrs Owens the divorce she was seeking. This places more emphasis on reaching agreement with your spouse as to the content of the Dawn Perrins divorce petition.

Laura’s new role – helping the Sunflower Women’s Centre to grow Laura Fraser-Crewes happily admits that taking on the post of Strategic Lead at Plymouth’s first women’s centre represented 'a huge leap of faith'.

But, after 16 years as head of operations at the city’s homeless charity, Shekinah, the opportunity to shape the future of the Sunflower Women’s Centre at Hyde Park seemed just too good to miss: “My first job in the sector was at a women’s refuge in London, so this feels like coming home,” she told the Plymouth Magazine.

“I’ve been here four weeks and I’m now putting the meat on the bones, making sure we reach the right people, and shouting out to everyone that we’re here. And I’m loving every minute of it.”

It was always going to take a pretty special role to wrench her away from Shekinah and the colleagues she calls her 'Shekinah family'.

“But it shows how passionate I am about being here. The city needs this centre – we know that by the numbers we’re seeing.

And yet, can you believe this is Plymouth’s first women’s centre? It’s bewildering.”

The Sunflower Women’s Centre was opened in January this year as the second phase of a three-year project by two local charities, Trevi House and Longreach. The centre is already having an impact where it’s needed. In some cases, says Laura, it’s even proving a life-saver: “We had a consultation event to gather feedback and one of the women wrote: ‘I don’t think I’d be alive if it wasn’t for Sunflower’. The biggest theme from the feedback is ‘we feel safe’.”

Laura’s first big decision was to paint the front door of the centre bright yellow: “I said ‘right, I need something that says sunflower’. I also wanted people to notice that we’re here.

And it worked. We get around 50 women through the door each week, in addition to our recovery groups in the evening, and those numbers are growing all the time as more people learn that we’re here.”

The centre is open 9-5 on weekdays and 12-3 on Saturdays.

with other agencies in the city who refer women. However, Sunflower has a strict ‘clean, dry, safe’ policy.

Among those benefitting from the centre’s services are women in recovery; women who have offending behaviours; mums whose children are in care; victims of domestic abuse or sexual violence, and women going though mental health issues.

“One of the big areas where we are fulfilling a need is with assisting female offenders,” said Laura. “The Ministry of Justice has done a strategic review into this area and has concluded that there is serious under-provision for women.

Without assistance, these women are vulnerable, at personal risk, and at risk of re-offending.

“The women tell us that provision for women currently is an after-thought, something that’s tagged on to male provision.

So women are being put into mixed gender groups, adding to their risk and vulnerability. Because often, women offenders are victims alongside of that.

“What Sunflower offers is a moment to breathe, away from those people who are part of the women’s offending patterns. It’s not about segregation, it’s about allowing a pause, so they can recover and heal. They’re on the path to recovery in the broadest sense and they want the opportunity to build resilience. That’s why they come here.

They’re looking for the support to take them further.

“And making social connections with other women is so important, just hanging out with people and feeling safe, feeling like they belong.

“But we can’t do everything which is why Sunflower allows a ‘wrap-around’ support from other agencies. It’s a women’s centre where other organisations working with women can also work from. I want to create a big hub under one roof.”

As well as Laura, Sunflower has four staff plus volunteers and peer mentors. All are women.

On-site support includes education, training and employment courses; coaching and mentoring; counselling; parenting; help with housing and benefits; furnishing after rehab; money and debt advice; relapse prevention; and help for mental health issues.

There is also a peerled support group for women who have lost a child in whatever circumstances.

More workshops are about to be added, based on nutrition and wellness for mental and physical health.

Launched with Big Lottery money in 2016, initially for women leaving rehab with children, the project’s funding is due to end in October 2019. But Laura is already looking beyond then: “This premise has served its purpose, but we’ve already outgrown it, we need somewhere bigger now.”

To that end, a building has been identified north of the university that would be spacious enough to offer the range of support needed. If a funding bid is successful, the move could happen before the end of the year: “If we can get the new building, then I want all women’s organisations from any sector to use it,” said Laura.

And she added: “Our ambition is simple – it’s to help more women to reach their potential and to have the chance to thrive in our community. That’s why I’m determined for Sunflower to become a vital part of the city.”

From coffins illustrated as a Plymouth Argyle shirt or a garden shed, to services held at favourite family places … people in Plymouth are increasingly choosing to say goodbye to their loved ones in their own unique way.

According to city funeral director John Wyatt, the trend towards personalised funerals is helping families through their loss, by keeping memories and the feeling of connection alive.

To provide the individuality that families want, John, of Wyatt Brothers Independent Funeral Directors, is working more and more closely with local businesses and artists – including fine artist and sculptor Alan Braidford.

Alan makes ceramic sculpture urns in his studio in Stoke and this summer had a selection on display at Wyatt’s in Durnford Street: “The urn project developed from themes I was exploring in my sculptural work,” said Alan. “Designing a range of tactile art pieces that provide a measure of solace and transition has taken me several years.

“The hand sized sculpture urns were a response to a conversation I had with John. He told me that some people prefer to have just a token, something they can have close to them as part of their daily life.”

The larger urns can be presented on a plinth. Fired at very hot temperatures to make them frost-proof, they can sit outside.

The anthropomorphic urns are recognisable as human forms but are gender neutral. Alan has also started to make sculpture urns for couples: “The idea of being symbolically connected in this way has a romance that might appeal to some couples.”

Alan uses a variety of clay types and finishes. The designs are strongly influenced by Neolithic and Iron Age artefacts, while some are made using Eastern raku techniques: “They look like they could be historical artefacts, but have a contemporary function and relevance,” said Alan. “All of my work is narrative and of course, these are story-telling

pieces, they’re about a journey.

“And because they’re made by hand, they are bespoke pieces of art in their own right.” The sculpture urns cost between £200 and £1,000 and people can commission their own design.

Alan did a degree in fine art in the early 1980s before becoming a teacher. He also studied ceramics at Plymouth College of Art and started making sculptures after buying a kiln for his garage. He is currently studying for an MA in ceramics as a part-time student at the college – which is when he finally put his idea into practice: “I had the idea several years ago but have focused on my other work until now. Doing the MA has given me the push to reinvigorate the project.”

John says things have changed completely since he and his twin brother James first became funeral directors 30 years ago: “How people are wanting to remember family members has changed enormously – and in a good way. The important thing is that by making personal choices, it helps you to think more about the person you’ve just lost.”

So how are families making funerals more personal?

Wendy Coulton was Plymouth’s first civil funeral celebrant when she set up Dragonfly Funerals five years ago. She said: “The biggest trend is that people are looking for something memorable, so that the funeral captures the essence of the person.

“For example, a dry Martini was placed on the coffin because the lady always had a glass when she had her weekly phone call with her son. Visual connections from football shirts and flags to medals and framed photographs being on display can help mourners.

“Another growing trend is having live music performances – for example, grandchildren playing instruments or a community choir the deceased used to sing with. People can also find comfort from physical contact or touch, like writing messages on the coffin.

“And humour is perfectly acceptable, particularly if it

resonates with the humour of the person being honoured.

Increasingly I am asked by a terminally ill person to meet them to help them plan their own funeral, as their last act of love for their family.”

Venues have changed, too: “There is greater choice now of neutral community venues in Plymouth as an alternative to the crematoriums for non-religious funerals, from sailing schools and rugby grounds to family homes.”

John says the current trends have one thing in common: “It’s all about that connection. For some families in the past, funerals perhaps didn’t provide that connection. That’s not the case now.”

By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre Now is the perfect time of year to plant spring flowering bulbs: they will get themselves settled and send their roots down into the soil before winter begins.

Then in the spring when the light levels begin to increase, they will start put on their top growth and burst into life.

They can be planted up to as late as January, and still put on a good show, but you will reduce the chance of them returning year after year.

Planting spring bulbs is a fantastic way to do a little bit of work now and get a huge reward in the spring. Spend a few minutes planting them now, forget about them and then in spring you’ll have a huge explosion of colour that required minimal effort.

Bulbs can also be planted in your pots underneath your autumn and winter bedding. They will simply grow through them and burst into flower in the spring and extend the life of your pots.

A great weekend project is to create a ‘lasagne pot’ for months of colour in the spring. The basic principle behind a lasagne pot is the bulbs that flower last should go to the bottom of the pot, the midseason bulbs should be then planted in the middle of the pot and the bulbs that flower first should be planted at the top of the pot.

Choose a fairly large pot, it doesn’t matter if the pot is plastic, terracotta, glazed or wooden, as long as it has good drainage. Also, choose a good quality compost, we recommend Westland Multipurpose with Added John Innes or Jacks Magic and we like to mix in a few handfuls of slow release fertiliser to give the bulbs a boost when they start to grow.

A great combination of bulbs to use are crocus for early colour, daffodils for midseason colour and tulips for late season colour. This will give you three months of interest, but the combination of bulbs you use is entirely up to you, get creative, make your own unique recipes of plants and have a bit of fun. If your pot is large enough, you could even get five months of colour, by using dwarf irises for January colour, crocus or snowdrops for February flowering, daffodils or hyacinths for March colour, tulips for April and alliums or Dutch iris for May flowering.

A second bulb project you can try is to combine spring flowering bulbs with spring flowering bedding. Clearing a section of the bed or border for spring bulbs is great to get spring colour, but then you’ll have a few months of bare soil looking a bit sad and neglected, but if you plant over the top of the bulbs with spring flowering bedding such as wallflowers, bellis, sweet williams and forget-me-nots, then you’ll have some green growth there, giving a bit of winter interest.

Planting them will also prevent any weed from growing, as weeds will grow in any bare soil. The planting combinations you can great can be stunning. Dark coloured tulips with fiery orange wallflowers look amazing together.

Bright yellow daffodils growing through baby blue forget-me-nots create a fresh, clean springy feeling.

Scented hyacinths combined with scented sweet williams will not only fill your garden with an abundance of colour, but will also fill the air with sweet scent too.

The rosy hues of bellis will be complemented with some white daffodils and pink tulips. It’s so easy to do that even the most novice gardener can do it. Just remember when planting

bulbs, the pointy end goes up and the flat end goes down, its an easy mistake to make.

October is also a great time in general for planting, the ground is still warm, air is cooling, so the demand for watering is lessening and plants will get established quickly and will be settled before winter hits.

Azaleas are a beautiful and extremely popular slow growing shrub with green glossy evergreen leaves and flowers that burst into bloom, producing a mass of colour from late winter until early summer and perfect to plant now.

There are a vast range of colours available from pure white through oranges, pinks, purples and reds. Azaleas are related to rhododendrons and are one of the most colourful of the spring flowering shrubs in the UK. The flowers are star shaped funnels and are produced in clusters at the end of the stems, when in bloom, the entire plant will be covered in flowers and will produce an abundance of colour.

Azaleas are easy to grow, and will tolerate full sun to full shade, provided you give them fertile, acidic compost and keep them well watered. If you don’t have acidic soil in your garden, you can grow them happily in pots in ericaceous compost and feed them regularly with ericaceous feed. Depending on the variety, azaleas tend to be reasonably compact,

Dianthus ‘Pink Kisses

With Plymouth Garden Centre these little plants is incredible, they just flower profusely and repeatedly, covering the entire plant.

They are naturally compact and are an incredibly dynamic plant for a whole host of situations in the garden, pots and planters, beds and borders or perhaps as a feature plant in a rockery.

The flowers of dianthus purple wedding are a rich pinky purple with a blood red centre.

Dianthus peach party is a pinky peach with a deep pink eye. They will thrive in a bright sunny spot position, and with a deadheading the faded blooms, it will perpetually throw up more and more blooms from spring until the frosts. It prefers a sunny spot with well-drained soil. They perform better when not sitting in damp soil and grow to a height and spread of 20cm (8ins).

Calluna vulgaris, more commonly known as Scottish heather is a great plant to use in baskets and tubs at this time of year. Its deep magenta, white or pink flowers and bright green foliage really do bring warm and cheer into the garden as the days get shorter.

It belongs to a group of heathers known as bud bloomers, which means that they produce brightly coloured flower buds that never fully open, and because of that they can’t be pollenated. This means that the flowers don’t fade, as it’s the pollination of the flower that causes it to fade and drop off.

Callunas holds their flowers for a long time, and stays looking good right throughout the winter. They are easy to look after, provided you give them full sun and a welldrained soil. They do prefer an acidic soil, but they will be fine in multipurpose whilst in the container or basket. It can be planted into acidic soil in the ground in spring. They are compact growers, growing to a height of 20cm (8ins) with a spread of 35cm (13ins). To keep them bushy and compact, give them a trim after flowering.

They have only been around for the past four years, but in that time, they have managed to bring dianthus back into fashion, and rightly so, they are brilliant little plants that flower their socks off from early spring to late autumn.
