The ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ has become a more and more popular way of investing for your children’s future, to ensure that you get a better rate of return on your money, even if you are not the person who is going to benefit.

A Declaration of Trust confirms the true ownership of the property and the proportions contributed by each party, regardless of the title entry at the Land Registry.

The Land Registry are able to note the existence of the Declaration of Trust on the title register, which will then in turn, alert any future purchaser of the property that there are other interested parties in the proceeds of sale.

This ultimately means that in the event of a relationship breakdown, your initial investment would be returned to you, and therefore be available to be used by your child or children in the future.

KF Kitchens make light work of fabulous kitchen

Question: How do you transform a hallway and two small rooms into one stunning kitchen and living space, opening up the fabulous views outside?

The firm’s solution was to knock down two walls to make one big room and allow for a huge window stretching almost the length of the room, with steel supports above. The result? An immediate ‘wow’ factor, a room full of light, and much, much more than kitchen.

Sarah says she and Richard had “a vague outline” of what they wanted: “But when we sat down with Nathan and Derinda, it was clear that our outline just wouldn’t work,” she said.

“What they came up with was a much better solution in terms of where everything should go to optimise the space and the views.

Richard and Sarah chose a kitchen from the Burbidge Kew range. The Kew is a fresher, sharper take on the traditional shaker form, with a luxury painted finish that accentuates the Kew door design and reveals the desirable, unique patterning of the solid ash framing.

The kitchen was completed in June.

Compassion and acts of kindess...

We receive literally dozens of press releases in the office every month, but one that arrived the other day was a real pleasure to read.

According to research by the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe, Plymouth has been found to be the kindness capital of the UK. Their research, which looked into how kindness has evolved in today’s digital, hi-tech society, revealed that - compared to a national average of 11.1 Plymouth people do an average of 14.6 acts of kindness a month, making them the highest scoring do-gooders in the country. Now I know what you’re thinking, how can you perform 0.6 of an act of kindness. Well, that’s just how research statistics tend to work on comparisons and averages.

Even if you ignore the decimals, Plymouth people perform significantly more acts of kindness than their counterparts in cities such as Manchester, London, Leicester and Nottingham - which were the other four places in the top five after Plymouth.

Admittedly, the kindness measurement is based on digital good deeds, such as liking social media posts or leaving positive reviews of businesses online, but I reckon it just reflects what goes on in so many walks of life in the city.

Earlier this year it was revealed that Plymouth could become the first accredited Compassionate City in the country, following an initiative by St Luke’s Hospice - and now spearheaded by a social enterprise called Hope in the Heart.

Hope in the Heart’s aim, among others, is to inspire positive change in individuals and communities to play their part in taking effective action to improve society.

The findings of the GoFundMe research indicate that Plymouth is well on the way to achieving that goal.

Commando Chris the children’s author A long-serving Royal Marine Commando who has seen action in some of the world's most dangerous troublespots could soon be making a name for himself - as the author of a series of children's books.

Lt Col Chris Hall, who is based at Stonehouse, has spent more than 20 years in the Royal Marines and is currently lead planner for the Royal Marine's Amphibious Task Group. His distinguished and decorated career has seen him deployed on a number of occasions to Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland.

And it was on his many deployments and during a protected period of time travelling to and from London, that Chris found time to pen a series of stories about a character called PC Snap, who has a pet labrador called Louie.

The inspiration for PC Snap came from bedtime stories that his dad John, who was a vicar in London at the time, conjured up for Chris as a child.

For many years Chris wanted to bring the character to life in the form of a book - and now he has achieved his goal with the publication of PC Snap and the Case of the Escaped Lion.

Chris, who is 40, said that writing the stories when he has been on deployment or travelling had helped bridge the gap with family life and provided a sense of purpose in creating something positive for his children while away from home.

Chris and his wife Kim have three children - 14-year-old Lucy, nine year old Beth and Archie, who is eight - feature in the book as various characters and they have not only loved hearing the stories, but also contributed ideas and suggestions.

It was while he was in Afghanistan in 2012 and 2013 that Chris started to write the PC Snap stories, sending them

back home for his children to read and provide input. "It was a great way to keep in contact with the family and get them involved with the books," said Chris.

Later he had to spent time commuting to and from London on the train and this gave him even more time to write eventually developing a series of eight books, the first of which was released by publishers Austin Macauley in August.

A lot of the characters in the book are based on friends and family, while the locations are named after parts of the South Hams. In PC Snap and the Case of the Escaped Lion, the circus is visiting Heybrook Thomas and PC Snap has the dubious honour of having to police it for the day with Louie, his trusty dog.

In between dealing with lost children and fraught parents, he finds himself unwittingly thrust into the limelight of the Big Top and closer to a lion than he could ever have imagined or desired.

That night, he has to confront the lion in very different circumstances and use all his wits to protect those he holds dearest, with a little help from some friends.

Chris, who lives in Plymstock, said: "I have tried to weave in as many local connections as possible and hope that the book will appeal to local families as a result."

Chris said that story writing and creating characters was not as far removed from life in the Royal Marines as may be thought.

"There's a real culture in the military of telling extravagant or outrageous stories - we call them spinning dits - so it's not too far removed from PC Snap," he said.

Internationally successful print designer Jess Halford from Peverell and talented knitwear designer Becky Dodman from Downderry have established 'Jess&Becky' to provide a series of workshops that allow participants to learn, or further explore, textile processes through innovative projects.

During the workshops participants will be encouraged to work in a free-and-easy, but productive way, exploring key ‘make’ skills, while being given the freedom and confidence to create samples, and to create items that have their own creative ‘stamp’ on them.

The pair have initially set up a programme of workshops in two locations in Plymouth – The Print Room at Ocean Studios in Royal William Yard, and Boston Tea Party in the Barbican.

The first workshops were launched in September at Ocean Studios starting with an experimental embroidery workshop exploring traditional and more contemporary approaches to embroidery.

Future workshops will build on a variety of skills, based on projects that are useful, fun and transferable. Inspired by colour and a vast array of cultural influences other workshops already booking up are: relief printing for beginners, vinyl printing t-shirts or sweaters, tassel making,

Both Jess and Becky are passionate about developing student’s confidence in their own individual skills, enabling them to explore experimental processes and share ideas while encouraging new ways of designing, making and creating.

The emphasis for both Jess and Becky is to create accessible, well resourced workshops using high-quality materials and equipment, so that participants produce high quality work with professional tools. Participants don’t need any prior experience of designing, or making, just an enthusiasm to have a go.

They are particularly keen to re-energise, or pass on new making skills that can enable individuals to add their own creative stamp to projects that can be shared, loved and made even more special. There is also always an element of fun, and Jess and Becky are skilled at making people feel at ease, which is important for any person learning or developing a new skill.

Jess said: “I am so excited to offer textiles workshops together with Becky. Her creativity and enthusiasm is spectacular and her positive energy as bright as her colourful style. I can guarantee participants will have an inspiring time with plenty of giggles – I can’t wait to see all of the future makes created over the next coming months.

"I’m looking forward to meeting new people and creating new opportunities to collaborate and inspire each other through these workshops. I hope it is a chance to further expand the network of creative people in Plymouth and the surrounding areas."

Becky said: “We are incredibly excited to bring our workshops to Plymouth and other parts of Devon and Cornwall. Textiles play such a key part in our everyday lives, from the clothes and accessories we wear, the tea-towels we dry our dishes with, to the cushions we fall into at the end of the day.

"We would like participants to feel more personally connected to the textiles they use, wear and carry through their lives, and this can be achieved by a range of textile embellishment and adornments.

"We are both very passionate about sharing textile skills and knowledge for both fashion and interior projects and want to reach as many groups and individuals as we can to upskill, re-energise and share textile skills across our community."

Jess said that the response to the workshops had been extremely positive. "We want to attract anyone who has time on their hands and wants to take themselves out of their busy lifestyle.

The workshops are the perfect place for mums and students to take a day off and be mindful."

The pair will be running 'Day of the Dead' T-shirt workshops at Boston Tea Party on October 27. T-shirts with skull templates will be provided and participants are encouraged to add their own graphics and embellishments. There are two workshops from 2pm to 3.30pm and 3.30pm to 5pm.

Paul Thompson was out running in January when he came across a young man on the Tamar Bridge who was clearly in extreme distress. In the space of six years, Paul’s life had gone full circle: “That was me on that bridge in 2012,” said Paul. “It was me who was about to take my life, and it was me who was approached by a passer-by who gave me reassurance and comfort and stopped me.”

Now, it was Paul who was doing the comforting: “I saw someone in the same position and I could see he was going to do it. I was in a good place and was able to see things from the other side. I reached out to him and talked him out of it.”

The incident, together with Paul’s own experiences, was the catalyst behind him launching Malesallowed on Facebook.

And it followed a setback which, in his earlier days, might have led to depression: “I was made redundant at the dockyard in May 2017,” said Paul, who lives in Plympton. “But it gave me the chance to go on some courses and I now work in mental health.

“I did an awareness video just for friends which I posted on my own Facebook page and a few of my friends came forward for a chat who had been suffering in silence. That kick-started Malesallowed.”

Malesallowed was launched as a peer support page on Facebook on 30 July, with a separate ‘closed’ Facebook group for men to share their feelings on any content posted on the main page. But with almost 500 followers within just a few weeks, and more than 50 members of the closed group, Malesallowed is now preparing to apply for charity status to help fund awareness and educational events as well as increasing the 1-2-1 support.

The group has already become more than a ‘virtual’ meeting place. It has secured a free-of-charge hub for weekly get-togethers at Devon and Cornwall Counselling’s building at Plymouth Science Park in Derriford, and the team arranges regular events such as walk-and-talks at Burrator and Foot

HEALTH MATTERS Golf at Central Park. At the time of writing, a breakfast club was about to be launched at Bitesize Café in Albert Road, Devonport.

When Paul launched Malesallowed, he was keenly aware of the need for such a group in Plymouth. Nationally, there were 5,821 suicides registered in the UK in 2017, and 75% of those were males.

Suicide is the most common cause of death for men in the age group 20-49: “There are too many male suicides and it shouldn’t happen.

“There is a lack of support generally for men, which is why what we’re doing is so important. We went to a quiz night at a pub in Plympton and the six guys who came along had never met before. For men to know there is this support and to come to an event where they don’t know anyone, that’s so important because it gets them talking. It’s easier for women because they’re better at talking about things than men.

“For me, talking was my recovery. I never used to talk about my mental health issues because I was ashamed that there was something wrong with me. It became a pressure cooker like a fizzy bottle. It was all bottled up with nowhere to go.

What’s needed is a slow release – and that’s what talking allows. When I started to open up, it reassured me that there is help and that we’re not alone.”

Paul runs the Facebook page with two other administrators, Daniel and Mo – both he and Mo have shared their stories on the page: “The guys see that we’re literally leading by example in that we are talking about our experiences.”

Malesallowed hosts live chats on the Facebook page each Wednesday and Sunday evening, which is reaching hundreds of people – many of them watching the discussion afterwards. Over 1,000 watched one live chat recently and the page has reached 28,000 people already.

When the issues are a cause for concern, Malesallowed points men in the direction of statutory organisations: “In those cases, we advise people to get in touch with The Samaritans,” said Paul. “We also give them details about the mental health service at Plymouth Options, but there is a waiting list there.”

The root of Paul’s health problems was an abusive childhood, when he felt alone and unsupported by adults around him – particularly teachers. It’s why Malesallowed is forging links with local secondary schools to hold mental health and bullying awareness events for students and, if funding is available, accredited training courses for education professionals to spot children who need help: “I’d turn up to school with bruises and it was never dealt with. I went into myself and I was bullied. Today, it’s cyber bullying that’s causing a lot of mental health problems for both boys and girls.”

The group is also keen to work with local business such as pubs and betting shops, to provide awareness materials like beer mats with slogans on them: “The message is: ‘It’s okay not to be okay’. It’s okay to talk about it. And there is support.”

The group is already being recognised for its work. The charity, Movember, has asked Paul to be an ambassador for the South West and the mental health charity MIND also want to connect.

Hearty breakfasts, warming soups, daily specials, delicious cakes and puddings, all home-made and with every penny of the proceeds helping to support local people living with dementia. What’s not to love about Moments Café in Plymouth city centre?

Throw in the friendly welcome, the very reasonable prices and the funky retro décor – pick the area with your favourite decade – and Moments in New George Street really is a café with a difference. Moments is, above all, for anyone who loves good food and great coffee. No wonder it has won awards for its customer service and this year was voted by the public as the best coffee shop in Plymouth.

The café is run alongside Memory Matters South West CIC (Community Interest Company), a social enterprise set up in 2010 to provide therapy, support services and education to help families affected by memory loss and dementia to live well. It’s a not-for-profit café, and all the money it makes goes directly into the pot to fund the work of Memory Matters.

Moments was opened in March 2016, and café manager Emma Oxland has been there right from the start: “The café has grown through word of mouth, with our regular clientele spreading the word that we are a really friendly café where everyone is welcome,” said Emma.

“But we’re now looking to reach even more people because we’ve been wrongly called a Memory Café and some people don’t realise we are here for everybody. Nothing could be further from the truth. We are completely inclusive. We cater for all ages and that’s the message we want to get out there.”

The other message is that this is a café with a conscience – if you buy a cuppa or a bite to eat here, you’re doing something good: “You know where the money is going, and you know that you’re helping to make a difference,” said Emma.

Moments is great for those

who like to relax and take their time over their cuppa – customers will never be given the ‘hurry up’ here. The interior has been designed to create space so there’s plenty of room for buggies and wheelchairs, and for families and friends to enjoy some quality time together.

The café has areas for each decade from the 1950s to the 1980s, with the décor and furniture to match, including sofas. There are LP covers and artwork on the walls, and books and other memorabilia on shelves to reminisce over, while the background music is a compilation of the biggest hits of all time.

Upstairs, the 1980s zone has its own private ‘hideaway’ and is popular with friends wanting time and space to hang out: “Everyone who comes in loves the décor and the music,” said Emma. “And the music isn’t loud, so people can hear each other when they’re chatting.”

Moments opens at 9am, with a selection of breakfast options.

The full English (£6.95) and a smaller ‘Mini Moments’ breakfast (£4.25) are available all day, together with a range of lighter breakfasts. Snacks and mains are served from 11.30, including sandwiches from £2.95, omelettes from £3, jacket potatoes from £3.95 and homemade soup of the day at £3.50.

Winter specials include stews, casseroles and cottage pie, while all-time favourites such as bread and butter pudding, jam sponge with custard and banana split are among the desserts.

A cream tea is £3.95 for one, £5.95 for two. There is also a children’s menu. Gluten-free options are always available, and Emma is working towards creating a separate GF menu in the Emma Oxland

COMMUNITY MATTERS near future. As an additional tempter, the café recently started a deal where customers can buy tea and cake for just £2.50 after 2.30pm every afternoon.

Moments has quickly become a part of the local community. From Day 1, it has had a Buy Forward Scheme, where customers can donate the price of a hot drink, a snack or a main meal. Emma explained: “The donation is converted into vouchers which we give to the city’s street pastors to pass on to people who are homeless or struggling. They can come and redeem the vouchers and either take out or sit in.

“It’s very discrete, and they have told the Street Pastors how nice it is to have somewhere they can do this. To our knowledge, we are the only place in the city centre that offers this. In our first year we received £3,000 worth of donations towards this scheme, which is absolutely incredible. And of course, the proceeds of the vouchers still go to Memory Matters.”

The Dementia Information Centre is based upstairs, and there are rooms for 1-2-1s in confidence with the team, led by founders, mental health nurse Laura Walker and registered general nurse Kate Smith. The space above the café has lift access and is available for hire – catering can be provided, too.

Mexican street food is a hit in the Market ‘Eat well to feel well’ and ‘healthy food can be tasty and exciting’ just about sums up the ethos behind the latest, successful food outlet in Plymouth City Market: No Whey!

The Mexican Street Food stall, serving a diverse range of plantbased snacks and meals, is run by Plymouth couple Fiona Graham and Joe Pilkington and has been getting top reviews on Trip Advisor.

Customers, the majority of them not vegans, rave about the tasty food and the super friendly staff, which ticks the boxes for Fiona: “We want to encourage

everyone, not just vegans, to eat healthy fresh food, and to enjoy it. It doesn’t have to be boring, in fact it can and should be an exciting, enjoyable experience.”

They launched in August, with support from the Prince’s Trust Enterprise Programme. Joe is the ‘business head,’ organising and managing the creativity that flows from Fiona, who is a fine arts graduate as well as a trainee psychotherapist. “We were very naïve in business when we started,” he said, “and our mentors at the Prince’s Trust helped us to structure our business plan and formulate our ideas into reality. It was incredibly helpful advice, and we have their mentoring for a couple of years.”

With Joe taking the lead on the business side, and Fiona taking point on food creation, customers are in for a treat.

But it’s more than just delicious munchies; Fiona and Joe see health advantages in their vegan food philosophy, which an increasing number of people can relate to, including benefits to mood and mental health.

“We believe that by choosing to eat fresh, mostly nonprocessed foods and reducing dairy and meat, people can help their own mental health,” said Fiona. They’re not alone in thinking this way: the website www.nature.com has published a summary of 41 studies into healthy eating and mental health, and the data is beginning to stack up.

At the least, research into a traditional Mediterranean diet (more plant based foods, less red meat and dairy) has shown it may reduce the risk of developing conditions like Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and raised cholesterol, which are all risk factors for heart disease. Researchers have also

found that people who closely follow a Mediterranean diet may live a longer life and be less likely to put on weight. Good news for NoWhey! Tacos! customers.

“My own daughter has really benefited from eating vegan food,” said Fiona. “She had asthma and eczema, and the symptoms for both of these are drastically reduced now that we have cut out meat and dairy.

“We have a regular, non-vegan customer who suffers from MS, who loves our tasty food because it helps him to cut down on red meat, which may have links to auto-immune disorders because of the antibiotics that intensively farmed animals are given.”

Whatever the health benefits may be, there’s no doubt that the main attraction for vegan and non-vegan customers alike is the explosion of flavours that Fiona’s food provides. It’s Mexican Street Food, with a twist.

She and Joe both create new dishes for their constantly evolving menu, and the food is colourful, vibrant, exciting and, by all accounts, enjoyable.

The prices are good, too. “Just because you don’t have much money shouldn’t mean you eat rubbish,” said Joe. The costs are kept reasonable by sourcing locally, with nearly all of their fruit and veg coming from fellow Market stallholders Joe Brown’s, and an amazing range of curry sauces from Torpoint-based Noda’s Food.

Joe and Fiona have big dreams, including establishing a social enterprise to reach out to homeless and disadvantaged people, teaching life skills in the kitchen and an awareness of healthy eating; they also want to start a ‘pay it forward’ scheme to provide meals to people who can’t eat well due to poverty.

But for now, Fiona just encourages people to “Come on down to the Market, have a chat or just sit quiet if you like, and we’ll serve you something that’ll make you change your mind about vegan food!”

From the Tamar Valley to London … artists flying the flag for Cornwall When the Drawn to the Valley artists’ collective was established in 2003 with 10 founder members, it included in its constitution a pledge to help spread the word about the Tamar Valley’s natural beauty. This autumn, the group – now grown to 160 – will be doing just that, with their first ever London exhibition, being held at the Royal Opera Arcade Gallery in Pall Mall on 21-27 October. Some 36 artists have been ‘drawn to London’ for the event, which has the dual aim of showcasing the artists’ work and publicising the Tamar Valley.

In November, they are back on home ground with an exhibition showcasing the winter beauty of Devon and Cornwall at the Drawn to the Valley Winter Exhibition at the Tamar Valley Centre at Drakewalls near Gunnislake from 17-25 November. But while there may be a wintry feel to the exhibition, visitors can also expect to see a wide spectrum of work, taking in all four seasons on both sides of the River Tamar.

Nov 9 REMEMBRANCE FESTIVAL On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the guns of Europe fell silent. After four years of the most bitter and devastating fighting, the Great War was finally over. The first Remembrance Day was conducted in 1919 throughout Britain and the Commonwealth.

Originally called Armistice Day, it commemorated the end of hostilities the previous year. It came to symbolise the end of the war and provide an opportunity to remember those who had died.

After the end of the Second World War in 1945, Armistice Day became Remembrance Day to include all those who had fallen in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

The ‘hidden epidemic’ - right under our feet Thousands of people in Plymouth are suffering pain and discomfort because of what has been described as a ‘hidden epidemic.’

The condition affects an estimated one in ten of the population and leads to pain in the heel and bottom of the foot.

According to Andrew Scowcroft of Foot Solutions it can cause intense pain which in many cases severely affects mobility.

Andrew said: “The symptoms include pain in the bottom of the foot, especially at the front or centre of the heel bone. The pain is often worse when first getting out of bed in the morning or when standing up after any long period of sitting.”

He said the condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including standing for long periods, weight gain or wearing inappropriate footwear.

GPs will often recommend rest or anti-inflammatory medication. In more severe cases, cortisone injections may be administered.

Podiatrist Karen Scowcroft of City Centre Chiropody, which is on the first floor of the Foot Solutions store in Royal Parade, said: “Although this can be effective, these actions simply deal with the symptoms and not the root cause of the condition.”

The technical name for the condition is Plantar Fasciitis.

Karen said: “The condition occurs when the foot is put under excessive strain usually due to the foot rolling inwards. This results in small micro-tears in the fascia, inflammation and in turn pain. For many people this has the impact of time off work, reduction in sporting activities and a general disruption to their quality of life.

Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius will be performed by Plymouth Philharmonic Choir and Plymouth Symphony Orchestra in an exciting collaboration in November.

Plymouth Symphony Orchestra and the Plymouth Philharmonic Choir will be performing together for the first time in Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius on November 25 at Plymouth Guildhall.

The two local musical forces will be joined by soloists Alison Kettlewell (mezzo-soprano), Jonathan Stoughton (tenor) and Eddie Wade (baritone).

The Dream of Gerontius is considered to be the Soloist Alison Kettlewell best and is definitely the most well-known of Elgar’s oratorios, as well as being one of classical music’s greatest works.

Elgar’s Roman Catholic faith drew him to a text by John Henry Newman which explores the journey of a devout man’s soul through death, divine judgement and purgatory to eternal peace. It is devoutly religious and meaningful as well as being profoundly beautiful music.

Sir Edward Elgar himself described this work as being ‘the best of me’. Gerontius became widely recognised as the first great English oratorio since those of Handel, some 150 years

Spectacular Illuminate light festival at the Royal William Yard

Great line up of events at Carnglaze Caverns Carnglaze Caverns near Liskeard have a number of special events coming up in November and December.

First up is Rock for Heroes on November 10 with proceeds going to Help for Heroes. Performed by a full live rock band and superb singers, it’s the must see show of the year. With music from artists such as Dire Straits, Status Quo, Queen, David Bowie, Madonna, Spandau Ballet, Bryan Adams, Elton John, Simple Minds and so many more.

December sees the popular Alternative Christmas Present Show with a variety of crafts and cracking Christmas gift ideas. The event is on December 1 and 2.

Finally, Plymouth’s popular Mad Dog McCrea returns to Carnglaze on December 15 with a unique mixture of folk rock, pop, gypsy jazz, and bluegrass music.

Half-term theatre festival, for all the family!

Popular Plymouth based theatre company Above Bounds have proved a firm favourite among local families in the past and now return to Plymouth Libraries this October half term - but they’re not alone.

They are launching Above & Beyond, Plymouth’s new family theatre festival featuring some of the UK’s best and most innovative companies producing shows for children.

Taking place on three days at a different library each day, there’s certainly something for everyone. The festival kicks off on October 22 at Plympton Library with Oily Cart associate artists, Feel Theatre and their Sensory Circus.

Ditto Theatre Company bring their touching debut show, Ingo’s War, which saw them winners of the 2017 Reviews Hub: Beyond the Fringe award. Local exhibitions Until Dec 21 2018 PLYMOUTH - FROM DESTRUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION House of Fraser, Floor 5 Plymouth suffered greatly during World War II. The docks and naval base made it a target resulting in the almost total destruction of the city centre and the displacement of tens of thousands of Plymothians. The city we see today epitomises the ambition and vision of post war planning. This exhibition includes fascinating objects, images and footage from the collection of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the South West Film and Television Archive that explores the themes of destruction and reconstruction.

Oct 11 - Nov 17 MEDITATIONS IN AN EMERGENCY: SIMON BAYLISS The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art Meditations in an Emergency takes its title from a poem by Frank O’Hara, written as prose-like musings on the subject of cultural identity and romantic heartbreak, spiked with landscape imagery. The words meditations (plural) suggests a gathering of thoughts or expressions on a subject, while emergency sets the pace. The exhibition features dance tracks, ceramics, poetry and painting plus more, building on Bayliss’ ongoing interest in working within craft-based traditions.

Until Oct 21 THE ATLANTIC PROJECT The Atlantic Project is a pilot for a new international festival of contemporary art in the South West of England. Plymouth is a city built upon visions of the future. As a deep water port, facing the Atlantic Ocean, its history is bound up with maritime exploration, in pursuit of the unknown worlds that lie over the horizon. In the lead up to Mayflower 400 in 2020, marking the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers’ voyage from Plymouth to the so-called ‘New World’ in North America, the aim is to test out the elements that will make up a new ‘biennial’ festival in the UK.

The title of the show has been inspired by the diverse, transdisciplinary, nature of the students’ practice. It references the adaptability, elasticity and acceleration they show in negotiating change and innovation: taking charge of the ‘frequency dial’ and embracing progress, understanding how to make it their own.

Plymouth Erme Clinic is based at Hartley Dental Clinic in Mannamead Road. Dr Harker moved there earlier this year from her previous city location in Ebrington Street due to its easy access, and because of the dental surgery’s own reputation: “It’s ideal for me because Hartley Dental Clinic has a focus on cosmetic dentistry, as part of their overall excellent service,” she explained.

“And the location is perfect because I have clients from across Devon and Cornwall. This is just off the A38 corridor from the Manadon Roundabout, but it’s also perfect for my clients in Plymouth. It’s quite central, off Mutley Plain, and it has plenty of free on-road parking in the area.”

But what about Dr Harker’s own journey? Where did that begin? Well, she has been a qualified doctor for 38 years, a GP for 33 years and has specialised in dermatology for the past 17 of them.

She is an NHS practitioner at the RD&E Hospital in Exeter, working at the skin cancer clinic.

It was in response to the growing need for appearance-based cosmetic treatments not funded by the NHS that she set up her private Erme Clinic 11 years ago, initially based in the South Hams. While she still has two busy clinics in Ivybridge and Totnes, most of her work is now focused at Plymouth Erme Clinic.

Dr Harker is a Board member with the field’s professional body, the British College of Aesthetic Medicine (BCAM), where all members are General Medical Council (GMC)-registered doctors. As part of her duties, she is the director of BCAM’s annual conference, which was held in September: “I’ve been on the Board for five years. It’s an unpaid role and the work takes me to London quite a lot, but I enjoy being at the forefront of a body of properly qualified doctors who are striving for excellence in the field of cosmetic medicine.”

Dr Harker travels widely to learn the latest medical breakthroughs in the specialism and in October, she attended an international conference in Barcelona. Among the most recent developments Dr Harker offers to her clients is Silhouette Soft Thread Lifts – described as a 21st century face lift without surgery. Practitioners must undergo specialist training in Harley Street before offering the procedure, and Dr Harker is one of a very small number of qualified practitioners in the South West.

A student designer is doing her best to bring joy to cancer survivors by developing colourful, comfortable prosthetic breasts.

Rosie Brave, a student at the University of Plymouth studying towards a research masters (ResM) in Digital Art and Technology, was inspired to make a difference after hearing about a friend’s mother’s struggle with the breast form she was given following surgery.

So along with the friend, Sam Jackman, Rosie started Boost, aiming to radically rethink the design of breast prostheses and come up with something that could give pleasure to wearers. The models they have created are colourful, lightweight and breathable, and designed via a collaborative process with those who have gone through the trauma of breast cancer and mastectomy.

Rosie said: “The idea came from Sam’s mother having a mastectomy, and hating the prosthesis she had. I’m always questioning why things are the way they are and how they can be better, and I love colour. Part of the issue with the prosthesis was that it was beige, and it was bland, and it didn’t match her skin tone. It was trying to look real but failing.

“We just thought it was much more interesting to depart from trying to be realistic at all, and have some fun with it.”

Post-mastectomy, patients can opt for breast reconstruction, but many choose not to go down that route.

For these people, the NHS offers breast prostheses that can go inside a specialised bra with a pocket, or a normal bra. But Rosie and Sam cite NHS figures suggesting wellbeing is lower in women who do not opt for reconstruction.

Rosie’s university research has led her to choose a codesign process that involves other people, through design workshops and focus groups. She has also worked with 3D printing technology, allowing her to move away from realism in the design of her breast forms, and experiment with different concepts and structures. She has run a number of

HEALTH MATTERS hidden, and sometimes people’s best friends don’t even know. That’s fine if that’s what you want, but I don’t think everyone wants that. I think it’s still taboo, and we’re trying to push back against that a little.

“Some of the people we spoke to had this attitude of ‘oh well, it doesn’t matter, I don’t matter, I just have to get on with it’. They’re used to the way things have always been, and they don’t expect their prosthesis to be something fun that gives them joy. I think there’s an opportunity to change that.”

Sam and Rosie have already received £15,000 through the Design Council’s Spark programme, in which they were finalists this year. They are currently seeking further investment to move to full product testing.

Rosie is planning an exhibition of prototypes to begin on International Women's Day, in March next year. Each will be unique and tailored to the individual women who participated in the research project, and who will be invited along with their families and the public.

Rosie and Sam’s biggest challenge is finding a way to bring down the cost of manufacture. Rosie continued: “The standard NHS prosthesis is hot, heavy and sweaty to wear. That was one of the first things we discovered, we thought if we can make it look attractive then we’re winning, but actually the feedback was, you need to deal with the heaviness and the hotness.

“That’s why we started to create things that were breathable, with an open structure that would let the air pass through. This structure is also part of the decorative element, but manufacturing it is quite tricky.

“That’s where 3D printing comes in, but unfortunately the cost of 3D printing in silicone is currently prohibitive, and people really want something affordable. They’re spending a fortune on specialised bras after surgery, and if they want additional prostheses from the NHS they have to buy them. The costs add up, so making an expensive product, even if it would be more comfortable to wear, didn’t really sit right.”

She added: “If someone has had a limb amputation it’s quite apparent, but this is

The new services will be travelling to Malta twice a week (Tuesday and Saturday), Malaga

By Travel Expert twice a week (Wednesday and Sunday) and Naples twice a week (Wednesday and Sunday). I don’t think the announcement of another Malaga service will make travellers jump for joy, but the new Malta flight, and Naples, are much more interesting.

The flights to Naples excite me most of all as Italy, especially the Amalfi coast, is the most beautiful part of the world, that I feel we should all visit at some stage. These flights are perfect for not just seven or 14-night holidays but also enable you to have long weekend breaks too.

Ryanair have received a lot of bad press recently, but I feel this is a real coup for Exeter Airport. If the flights are successful it could mean more flights, and more destinations, from our local airport. I’m sure the likes of Easyjet will be looking on with interest with how well things

Travellers who renew their passports face losing up to nine months validity due to a little publicised change to the rules by the Home Office.

Up until a few weeks ago, when British citizens renewed their passports, time remaining on the existing document was added to the new one, up to a maximum of nine months.

Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. Any remaining months will now be lost if an attempt is made to renew early.

Passports are valid for 10 years, and currently cost £75.50 to renew online or £85 by post, with the fee increasing in March above the rate of inflation.

The change in the rules, with regard to carrying over validity, could lead to applicants renewing their passports as late as possible to eke out the validity. This new ruling has set alarm bells ringing within the travel industry.

The passport office had major delays a few years ago when many decided to renew their passports at the same time.

Many countries in the world now require you to have at least six months' validity on your passport for entry. At the end of March, when Brexit should come into place, this could also apply to travel within Europe.

I do feel the Home Office has been unfair by not announcing this change. It would have been much fairer to give a deadline, so you could renew before it was implemented.

This new ruling, in effect, means that any new passport issued is only valid for nine years and six months, and we are still paying the same for it!

My advice would be to check the validity of your passport: if it has less than six months left on it, and you know you will be travelling abroad next year, I would renew it as soon as possible.

This does mean you would lose up to six months left on your old passport, but you will have a new passport in place before the end of March, when nobody at this stage knows what will happen.

Finally, we have seen a massive boost in client’s bookings, particularly with British Airways, since the BA data breach a few weeks ago. Our clients flying with BA were unaffected by the hack, which hit 380,000 direct customer transactions.

Travel agents pay airlines via separate billing systems, which means customer credit or debit cards are not passed onto the airline. I still find it amazing how many consumers will pass on confidential details to companies on-line not knowing who can see them.

This breach has not only highlighted that booking on-line is not as secure as we hoped, but also that booking with your local travel agent is overall a better option. I have found over the years that my job as a travel agent has changed immensely. We used to just find and book holidays for our clients, but now we check clients in, pass on the advanced passenger information (API) to airlines, assist clients with their visas, book assistance at the airports and also check the medical and passport validity requirements for the countries they are visiting.

Perception is that on-line transactions will always be cheaper, but, as we’ve seen with the British Airways fiasco, they are not necessarily secure and may not always be the best option for cost either.

Why would you therefore book on-line when your travel agent is not only a more secure way to book your holiday but will also give you the added free services which can be very complicated, and help make your whole holiday experience a much more pleasant one, with added peace of mind.

But her popular shop Beaux Cadeaux has found the place Val believes is exactly right for her and husband Richard’s business venture, Furniture Revolution.

Six months ago the couple relocated the business to Millbridge in a parade of shops on Molesworth Road which is gaining a reputation for being the go-to spot for interiors in Plymouth.

Flanked by other shops also focusing on providing quality offerings for the home, such as a high-end curtain makers The Window Dresser, it’s a stone’s throw from some of the city’s most popular antique shops and Beaux Cadeaux fits right in.

There is still the range of gifts Beaux Cadeaux has built its reputation on but the shop is much more focused on the Furniture Revolution side of the business, breathing new life into old furniture using a speciallycommissioned range of paints that only Val and Richard sell.

And they haven’t stopped at transforming

furniture, their skills have been in demand revamping kitchens and bedrooms at holiday homes and bed and breakfasts across Devon and Cornwall – all using their own specially-commissioned paint Lisse & Belle, which is French for smooth and beautiful.

Not many people get to commission their own paint so why did the couple decide to take that step?

“When we branched out with Furniture Revolution we were using chalk paint which is great for effects and the shabby chic look,” explained Richard.

“But we didn’t feel it had the durability or finish required for painting kitchens, so we set about testing lots of different paints from various suppliers.

BUSINESS MATTERS “Amazingly we found a UK manufacturer of water-based paints that were durable and waterproof but still had a lovely, timeless finish which we have used and sold ever since.”

So, while the stock of gifts familiar to regular customers is all there in the new location its additional workshop space has really allowed the Furniture Revolution business to grow, taking on bigger projects all the time.

The shop is bursting with evidence of the couple's creativity with a Beanocovered chair currently sharing space with a newly-revived pine table and chairs made chic in a smart blue hue - one of the 20 colours they stock which can be mixed to make many more shades.

“People can bring a piece of furniture which no longer fits a new colour scheme, or just looks dark or tired, and we can give it a new look,” said Val. “We have been restyling whole kitchens too which is a comparatively low cost way of giving units a whole new lease of life as well as a way of reusing rather than replacing.”

“We have moved around the city a few times but we love being here in Millbridge and we are really enjoying developing this new and exciting side of our business,” she said.

“This feels like exactly the right place to be.”

By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre Many childhood memories of Christmas centre around the main decoration in our house – the Christmas tree.

Christmas just isn’t complete without the warming fragrance of a fir tree filling the house on a cold winter morning. We can all remember the excitement of going to choose a tree on a wet cold day, getting it home, in the car, on the roof , sometimes no room for any of us in the car and then getting it into the house and realising it’s a lot bigger now it’s in the front room!

We love to put presents under the tree with a great sense of achievement having spent time getting the decorations right with the children finding the best branch to hang their handmade decoration from.

It’s a tradition that most remember fondly. There is so much pressure on this tree, it has to be the right tree, the right shape, have the right scent, one that will fit in the right spot and then it has to dazzle the room and wear the decorations well but it’s a lot of fun and something we all look forward to!

Fiona and Lee have been out with our local suppliers picking trees for our customer orders. Fiona is incredibly selective when it comes to Christmas trees, only the very best will do.

They spend days and days wandering fields for the cream of the crop, la crème de la crème, the pièce de résistance! If you want her to choose for you, you can call us to get on our ordering list.

By the end of November, Plymouth Garden Centre will be fully stocked with Christmas trees, but with different types to choose from, it isn’t just height that you need to consider when buying a tree.

The Nordmann Fir This gorgeous tree is the most popular; wide and bushy, forming the perfect tree shape, with deep green, long, waxy needles. A ‘low needle drop’ variety - it is the best tree for holding onto its needles, which themselves are soft to the touch and densely packed on the branches. They have layered branches that are strong and sturdy, making them great candidates to be heavily decorated and will support your lights with ease. The most popular size is the 1.8m (6 foot) tree, come down early before they sell out!

New in for 2018 is a slimline variety. They still maintain all the things we love about the Nordmann, but they have been pruned slightly differently to produce a more compact shape.

We are greatly anticipating their arrival, and rapid departure too - such a perfect tree won’t be in stock long!

The Fraser Fir Our next ‘low needle drop’ tree is the Fraser Fir. They have a narrower body, but still retain the traditional conical shape.

These are great trees for those where space is limited, or perhaps want a more modern, contemporary Christmas tree.

The needles are bluey, green colour, with and almost silver sheen to them. They are slightly stiffer than a Nordmann firs needles, but are not prickly. They also have an extremely pleasant scent that will fill your home. The branches tend to be full and dense, giving the tree a full appearance.

The Norway Spruce The traditional Christmas tree. This the good old-fashioned tree that people have been decorating since Victorian times.

It has the classic tree shape and the delicious pine scent we all associate with Christmas. It has stood the test of time, are very good value for money and many of our customer will not choose anything else. A beautiful tree it is, it can lose its needles more quickly than others but a cool room and plenty of watering is the secret to retaining needles for longer. The needles are fine and narrow and cover the branches and arms.

These are very bushy, full trees and we do recommend you wear gloves when choosing!

Christmas tree hints and tips We recommend that you cut half an inch off the bottom of the trunk so it can drink. We can trim the stump for you in the garden centre if you need us to! Christmas trees drink a lot of water, up to a pint of water a day, so make sure it’s topped up regularly.

Once you get your tree home, soak it in a bucket of water outside or somewhere cool until you are ready to take it in the house. This will just guarantee that your tree will be as fresh as it can be for decorating.

Choose a suitable position for your tree in your home. Ideally a place away from any direct heat source like heaters or fireplaces. Placing your tree next to a heat source will result in it drying out and dropping its needles. The cooler the better.

If you have a stand already bring it with you so we can help match the size of the tree and stump to your stand. If you need a new stand or are starting from scratch, we are happy to help you decide which one is right for you. And, if you have a stand which requires the base tree to be drilled, we can also do that for you in store at the garden centre.

with an ericaceous feed. Keep them well watered if you bring them indoors for Christmas and try to keep them away from sources of heat. This dries out their needles and causes them to drop.

After Christmas, place the tree back outside and feed it throughout the spring and summer. They like to be in full sun and well-watered, so give them as much sun as possible and don’t allow them to dry out. Re-pot in the spring every year if you wish to keep bringing it in for Christmas or plant it out directly in the garden, where it will grow into a beautiful tree.

Real or artificial – the environmental impact We pride ourselves on having quality grown British Christmas trees. All our real trees, both cut and potted are British grown and are as fresh as can be. We don’t buy in any foreign trees at all. In fact many are local, and hand selected by us to have the best shape and quality for our customers. Once considered to be more environmentally friendly, artificial trees actually need to be re-used for around 10 Christmases (or more) to keep the environmental impact lower than that of a real tree. They are made of plastic, and the production, manufacturing emissions, and unrecyclability of artificial trees mean it has a greater carbon footprint than a real one.
