Local businesses beat Brexit blues With all the battles over Brexit casting a dark cloud over the national economy, it’s good to know that as far as many local family enterprises are concerned it’s very much business as usual. Regular readers will already know that we love to champion the cause of independent local businesses as they are the backbone of the city economy, providing jobs for tens of thousands of people. We’re pleased to report on two local businesses in this issue which are flying in the face of all the economic pessimism. Our cover story this month features a talented young chef called Fletcher Andrews, who has worked with Masterchef winner Anton Pietrowski in the past. Supported by his girlfriend and members of his family, they have launched the aptly-named Fletcher’s restaurant in Princess Street, which was previously occupied by Chloe’s. Just a couple of months after opening, Fletcher is already taking on more kitchen staff and planning to extend day-time opening hours. We wish him and the team every success in the future. We also report on the success of The Window Dresser, a popular home interiors business based in Millbridge. The business was established more than 20 years ago by Shelley Coleman and was recently acquired by Marie Hewitt, who runs a soft furnishings consultancy. They have joined forces to offer homeowners and businesses alike a wide range of bespoke soft furnishings - and their skills are in great demand. Elsewhere in this issue we report on the vital work of two charities - the NSPCC and the Hoofbeats Equine Rehabilitation Sanctuary. The dedicated team at the NSPCC’s Plymouth Centre provide life-changing support for children whose lives have been affected by abuse, while the Hoofbeats charity has been rescuing and re-homing horses and ponies for more than 20 years. At a time when there is so much doom and gloom around, it’s great to be able to report positive stories of success.

PROPERTY MATTERS The Lawson team (l-r) Chris Mervyn, marketing director, Ben Dreher, director, Darren Lawson, managing director and Kevin Buckingham, director
Fresh challenge for Darren as new era dawns for city centre estate agent One of Plymouth’s most instantly recognisable and respected estate agencies is about to enter a new era – led by a managing director who knows he is lucky to be alive to witness it happen. Mansbridge Balment Plymouth has been re-named Lawson Estate Agents, after Darren Lawson, the experienced property professional who has been in charge at the high street, independent company since 2003, first as Director, then Managing Director five years later. He is also the man who came close to death on a ski slope in France in 2014, after suffering serious head injuries in a fall, when an annual pre-Christmas holiday with his two young sons nearly ended in tragedy. Since then, Darren’s incredible recovery from that terrible accident has been well documented. Emerging from a fourweek coma, he had to learn to walk and talk again with the help of the dedicated medical teams at Plymouth Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at Mount Gould. Now he is about to face another major challenge, as he looks to build on the success of the long and established heritage that the Mansbridge Balment Plymouth name has become synonymous with. The new direction for the agency has been an ambition of Darren’s for some time now, but he is quick to stress that, while the name of the business is changing, the way it does business certainly isn’t. “I have made it my life’s work to recruit the very best estate agency team and I am extremely proud to say that many of those amazing people are still with me today – and still
8\

utterly committed to our ethos and objectives,” said Darren. “That’s why I am confident that this transition to Lawson will be seamless and completely professional. Change is good when it is for the better and it is going to be much better for our clients moving forward. “A business isn’t just about a name, it’s about the people in that business. I am very lucky to be surrounded by the best people, who will make the Lawson customer experience the envy of our rivals.” The change of name has come about because Darren wanted to better reflect the agency’s strong connection with Plymouth, where it has two High Street branch offices serving Plymouth on Mannamead Road, Mutley Plain and North Plymouth in Woolwell, next to Tesco Roborough. Having its own individual identity will also enable Darren and the team to forge an even greater sense of family and independence. It will also be the catalyst for clients to benefit from exciting and innovative new services, with unrivalled levels of support, experience and expertise. “We now have a real sense of our own individuality and identity. This change will reinvigorate an already distinguished and highly accomplished agency, giving us power to better shape our own destiny for the benefit of all our customers,” added Darren.

KF Kitchens make light work of fabulous kitchen
Question: How do you transform a hallway and two small rooms into one stunning kitchen and living space, opening up the fabulous views outside? Answer: Call in the experts from awardwinning independent Plymouth firm, KF Kitchens, run by Nathan and Derinda Damarell and Simon Rice.
That’s exactly what Richard and Sarah Ackland did at their beautiful home overlooking the golf course at St Mellion in Cornwall. “The two rooms that were here before were very small and dark and didn’t make the most of the views,” said Sarah. “We asked them: ‘What can you do to open up those views?’ Our other requirement was that we wanted a nice big space where we could sit as a family with our two boys.”
The firm’s solution was to knock down two walls to make one big room and allow for a huge window stretching almost the length of the room, with steel supports above. The result? An immediate ‘wow’ factor, a room full of light, and much, much more than kitchen. Sarah says she and Richard had “a vague outline” of what they wanted: “But when we sat down with Nathan and Derinda, it was clear that our outline just wouldn’t work,” she said. “What they came up with was a much better solution in terms of where everything should go to optimise the space and the views. Richard and Sarah chose a kitchen from the Burbidge Kew range. The Kew is a fresher, sharper take on the traditional shaker form, with a luxury painted finish that accentuates the Kew door design and reveals the desirable, unique patterning of the solid ash framing. The range offers bespoke colours and Richard and Sarah chose painted wood in slate and French light grey, on a light oak
coloured carcase with T&G panels on all ends. The kitchen was completed in June. “The new kitchen is a great place to sit and socialise with friends. And the design means I can have the boys in here with me while I’m cooking. It’s very family-friendly, which is what we wanted. “We would happily recommend KF Kitchens to other people.” Visit the KF Kitchens website and Facebook page for more reviews and photo galleries.

BUSINESS MATTERS
(l-r) Sharon Richardson, Hazel Willmott, Marie Hewitt, Shelley Coleman, Leah Stacey, Harmony Rump
Dress your rooms to impress, with beautiful soft furnishings from The Window Dresser Two of Plymouth’s home interior businesses have come together to create an all-in-one bespoke service under one roof. Marie Hewitt Interiors has purchased The Window Dresser, the long-established made-to-measure curtains and blinds retail shop and workroom in Molesworth Road, Millbridge. For customers, the only thing that has changed is that Marie has moved her soft furnishings consultancy into the shop, adding to The Window Dresser’s services. The team of creative seamstresses remains the same and the previous owner, Shelley Coleman, is there three days a week. Between them, the staff boast 80 years of experience in the industry. Shelley established the business 21 years ago; Marie has worked in soft furnishings for 15 years; Hazel Willmott has 23 years of experience as a soft furnishings-maker; and Hazel’s daughter Leah Stacey has also been a seamstress for 20 years. Working alongside them is seamstress, Sharon Richardson and shop assistant, Harmony Rump. Marie took over The Window Dresser last year when Shelley was looking to go parttime: “I was always coming into the shop anyway, to commission hand-made curtains for my projects, so this made sense for everyone,” said Marie. “Now, I can work from here full-time, rather than from home, so that jobs can be turned around really quickly, and everything else carries on just like before. We didn’t need to change anything, so customers won’t notice

any difference. It’s working really well, we all love what we do and we’re all committed to striving for excellence for our customers.” The Window Dresser makes beautiful hand-stitched soft furnishings for home-owners and businesses, from cushions, upholstery, and bespoke headboards, to stunning tailor-made curtains with matching accessories. The shop also supplies Venetian, roller blinds and shutters and has a wide selection of tracks and poles. A free consultation and measuring home visit and full fitting are part of the service. And, says Marie, customers get all this for a price that

compares well with high street shops: “People assume that this will be more expensive, but it’s not. We don’t have the overheads, so we can make furnishings that fit perfectly, at a comparative price. And our customers are getting beautiful curtains that are made to last, through the stitch-work and the interlining that protects the curtains from sunlight. “None of our curtains are ever brought back to us for repairs, and many of the shop’s customers are through recommendations from existing customers.” But it’s not just about the price and the quality, it’s also about the personal yet professional service: “People can come in and take their time looking at all the fabrics and colours, and we are here to offer advice. Shelley and I are also happy to offer a free home visit so that our customers benefit from our knowledge and expertise.” Marie added: “We get really good testimonials, and what customers say is that they appreciate the way that we really care about our work. We are as passionate about their furnishings as they are. The attention to detail, the experience, the creativity, and the friendly service from start to finish is something you’re unlikely to get with the national companies.”

Marie’s commercial clients include the Dart Marina Hotel and the Thurlestone Hotel, but the Window Dresser team is also busy with domestic customers: “Our work is suited to all requirements and budgets,” said Marie. “We do everything, from multi-million pound new-builds to a small window. “We have noticed that home owners are increasingly looking for soft furnishings that are made for them and is different to what’s available in the shops. A lot of our customers have large windows that need a made-to-measure solution, but the curtains or blinds also have to be beautiful, because it’s a focal point of the room.” For anyone contemplating a new look for their home interior this year, whether traditional or contemporary, The Window Dresser has a vast selection of fabrics from major brands to inspire ideas. Suppliers include Harlequin, Sanderson, William Morris, Linwood, Blendworth and Prestigious. The shop has all the newest sample books, and Marie and Shelley have regular meetings with the brands’ reps to ensure the latest designs are available to customers. “We make it an enjoyable experience for our customers,” said Marie. “Just pop in for a chat or give us a call to make an appointment. We will guarantee you our time, our care and our passion, and you’ll be able to meet the talented women who make your furnishings.” Turnaround for commissions is approximately 4-6 weeks from the point of order. The shop-workroom is open 9.30am to 5pm on weekdays and 9.30am to 1pm on Saturdays.

FASHION MATTERS PCA Photographer: Mi Kelly Model: Abi Baldwin
Sustainable s supports comp With an estimated £140million of used clothing being sent to landfill each year in the UK*, one of the city’s bestloved charities has joined forces with talented students to show that buying outfits second hand not only boosts our wardrobes and wallets but benefits the world at large, too. When first-year commercial photography students from Plymouth College of Art sought St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth’s help for a ‘high end’ fashion shoot with a difference, the charity – which has over 30 shops across Plymouth and surrounding areas – was keen to help, giving them free rein to raid the rails of its city centre Drake store in Cornwall Street to find suitably stylish secondhand items. With the students having mixed expectations about the quality and range of items they might find there, the experience proved a real eye-opener for the budding photographers – Ben Given, Bethan Madeley, Catherine Hyde, Mi Kelly, Paris Netherton and Rosie Hartshorn – as well as producer, student Alice Conway, models Laura McGowen and Abi Baldwin, plus the hair and make-up team of City College Plymouth students involved. Not only were they blown away by the bargain prices of the impressive range of high-quality pre-loved dresses, coats, shoes and accessories, they pooled their talents to make the outfits look a million dollars in the images they captured against the suitably elegant backdrop of Mount Edgecumbe House in Cornwall.

FASHION MATTERS
Student photographer Mi Kelly said: “Initially, we were a bit sceptical and weren’t sure we’d find enough high-quality items in a charity shop, but we couldn’t have been more wrong. “Our trawl netted really well-made clothing and great accessories that with a bit of savvy styling looked fantastic in our photographs. It has changed my perception of charity shops – you can find treasure there!” Also impressed was the students’ tutor, Lecturer Carri Angel. She said: “The majority of our students have grown up with ‘fast fashion’, where many brands promote cheap items designed to be disposed of after minimal wear. “These students are the influential image-makers of the future so it’s important that we challenge them to be part of the solution to the problem. They’ve proved that secondhand in no way means second rate.” So pleased is St Luke’s with the fashion shoot photographs, it is planning to display them in the Drake charity shop windows shortly. Shop manager Julie Brickfield said: “It’s great that while the images are high end, the outfits sourced from our shop are absolute bargains – a whole outfit perfect for a charity ball for just £35! Just shows you can be stylish in a sustainable way, all while supporting a fantastic local cause.” *Figure from Wrap UK

FOOD MATTERS
Top team...Fletcher with sister Tolon
Fabulous food and a relaxed atmosphere on the menu at Fletcher’s Just a couple of months after opening Fletcher’s restaurant on the edge of Plymouth city centre, talented young chef Fletcher Andrews is already taking on more kitchen staff and planning to extend day-time opening hours. He’s also introducing new dishes to the menu – and looking to make the most of the outdoor space. Fletcher moved in to what was formerly Chloe’s restaurant in Princess Street late last year – and it was all hands to the pump in the run up to Christmas and New Year: “We got the keys on 14 November and opened on 16 November!” said Fletcher. “We had to work like mad to turn the place around. At times, there were 15 of us in here, painting, decorating, installing, and getting the place ready.” It’s a huge step for 23-year-old Fletcher, who worked with 2012 Masterchef winner Anton Pietrowski at the Treby Arms in Sparkwell when the gastropub earned its Michelin star and 2 AA rosettes. He spent five years at the Treby, where he rose to be head chef. He has plenty of support in his new venture, which is a real family affair. His girlfriend Jessica Harkcom is in charge of front-of-house and admin; his sister Tolon and her boyfriend, George Roberts, work front-of-house; and Fletcher’s brother Chris also works at the restaurant. Fletcher’s mum and dad help out behind the scenes, too. The restaurant, to the rear of the Theatre Royal car park, offers relaxed fine dining, with a la carte, pre-theatre and set menus. At the time of writing, Fletcher was adding new dishes – including quality burgers – in response to the demand from people who work in the area and want a quick lunch before heading back to work.
14\
The Plymouth Magazine February 2019
But Fletcher’s is more than a restaurant. It also welcomes people who want somewhere nice to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, which are served with home-made petit fours. And, after food service finishes on Friday and Saturday evenings, it becomes a classy table-service cocktail venue for discerning customers who want a quiet, late night drink away from the crowds. Outside, Fletcher is smartening up the front courtyard with tables, chairs and outdoor heating, ideal for a drink and a light lunch or an al fresco evening meal. He is also creating a barbeque area for special occasions and bank holiday weekends. Plymouth-born Fletcher says that getting his own restaurant is a dream come true: “This is what I always wanted to do. I’d been looking for somewhere for a little while, but nothing really came up. As soon as I found out that this was up for sale, I jumped right in and purchased it. It’s a great location and 34 covers inside is a nice size.” He’s had the best possible preparation. After training at City College, Fletcher worked with the New Continental Group before being taken on at the Treby Arms: “I was very fortunate to work with some highly skilled chefs at the New Continental Group, and then with Anton,” said Fletcher. “Anton was totally inspirational, he could create something amazing out of almost nothing, he was always full of new ideas. I like to think that that creativity and ability to adapt dishes has rubbed off on me.” Fletcher has retained Chloe’s sous chef, Lois Aerts – “he’s a real star in the kitchen” – and is taking on an apprentice: “We had to start with a small menu but having additional kitchen staff means we can start to add more things,” said Fletcher. “I’ve always worked in fine dining, but I want it to be in a relaxed atmosphere, which is what we’ve achieved. We’ve pitched it at mid-price range, and the set menu is excellent value.”
FOOD MATTERS Dishes on the a la carte menu are between £7 to £26, while the set and pre-theatre menus are £18 for two courses and £22 for three courses. The front-of-house team can suggest wines to match your food. Starters include dressed crab; ham hock, smoked cheddar and apple terrine; and soup of the day. Current mains include honey-glazed duck breast; pan-fried sirloin steak; pan-fried cod with brown shrimp and chive beurre noisette; fish and chips with mushy peas, pickled onion and tartar sauce; and beetroot risotto. Among the desserts are chocolate mousse, caramelised banana and honey lime with banana purée, honeycomb and vanilla ice cream; lemon tart, served with Italian meringue, yoghurt, raspberry sorbet and lemon balm; toffee and limeglazed sticky toffee pudding, served with banana, honeycomb and salted caramel; and selection of five cheeses, with quince, apple, grapes, pickled celery, chutney and crackers. There is also a special set menu for Valentine’s week. The restaurant uses locally-sourced seasonal produce where possible, so the menu will be tweaked at different times of the year. Some of the dishes are gluten-free and all the dishes can be adapted to meet dietary requirements, with 24-hours’ notice: “We are really happy with the menu,” said Fletcher. “We put a lot of thought into it, and people are loving it. Now, we can start to build on it.” As for his hopes for the restaurant, they’re pretty simple: “We’re all very passionate about what we are doing here, the food we’re cooking, our customer service, and the ambience, and we just want people to have a great time. As long as we can fill the restaurant, and our customers leave with a smile on their faces, we’ll be happy.” Food service is 12-2.30pm and 5.30pm to 9pm for final food orders in the evening, Tuesdays to Saturdays. The set menu is available for lunch and from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Visit the website or Facebook page for the latest information on menus and opening hours.

Thanks to backing from Plymouth City Council and the support of over 200 backers to a recently run Crowdfunder, Plymouth Arts Centre’s unique cinema is secure and is now relocated to its new home and doubled in size, while allowing it to remain wholly independent. The new 118-seat auditorium has been built in Plymouth College of Art’s city centre building at Tavistock Place over the Christmas and New Year period. The new venue opened to the public on January 11 with special screenings of Stan and Ollie, on the day of the film’s release in the UK. The cinema will continue to screen the best in independent British, American and world films, with a few old classics for good measure. The French Film Festival UK will also be featured in the first week of February for a selection of the finest new French cinema. Chair of Plymouth Arts Centre’s Board of Trustees, Andrew Brewerton, said: “Moving from the Looe Street address is emotional for many people, but the fact is that it is no longer fit for purpose. Audiences are the heart of Plymouth Arts Centre and the thing that drives it forward. “It will continue to be run by Plymouth Arts Centre’s Cinema programmer Anna Navas and the team from Plymouth Arts Centre, who will take special care to bring the quality and breadth of films, friendly atmosphere and grown-up cinema experience with them.” Tim Bolton, Vice Principal at Plymouth College of Art, said: “Plymouth College of Art shares many fundamental values with Plymouth Arts Centre and we have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship spanning numerous years. “We’re confident that the new, enhanced space will improve the viewing experience for cinema-goers, and hope that together our shared resources will enable Plymouth Arts Centre to continue their mission to bring independent cinema to the city.” Special offers To celebrate the opening of the new venue, there are a number of offers available Attend one of the Discovery screenings and enjoy watching a film in the new cinema for only £2.50 per ticket. There are three Discovery screenings in January and February which are Suspiria January 30, 8.15pm: The Old Man and the Gun February 14, 6pm; and Green Book February 28, 8.30pm. Feb 1 ANATOMY LAB LIVE The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Millbay Road Dinner and dissection evening based solely around surgical techniques. The 2019 tour focuses on surgery and the corrective intervention methods used to treat pathology. You’ll learn the mechanism of diseases and how this affects the gross anatomy as you gown up ready for live theatre working on real specimens. After your two course evening meal, the drapes will go up (literally) and a fully working state of the art operating theatre will reveal the patient. Your dining table will extend to become a draped theatre table as you call for ‘suction’ and we begin examining and preparing the delicate organs structures using the real surgical equipments. A focused evening event built by medical academics to strengthen understanding of how the human body works. Whether you’re a beginner, an undergraduate student or a practicing professional, the hands on dissection will teach and refresh everything you need to know about the human body. Until Mar 16 BIRDS, ROCKS, RIVERS, ISLANDS Levinsky Gallery, Plymouth University Birds, butterflies, streams, pastures, moors, beaches and seas around us fill many bookshop shelves and the pages of critical reviews. Such preoccupations have also flourished within the visual arts, in particular fine art and photography programmes in universities such as Plymouth. Jem Southam, who was Professor of Photography at the University of Plymouth until 2018, and one of the UK’s leading photographers, has contributed enormously to this field with a series of extended photographic works which explore the social and cultural legacies of post-industrial landscapes. In this exhibition, he shows, for the first time, a series of studies which he has made while travelling and walking, featuring a number of key natural features, as well as using a number of different cameras and capture systems, and a variety of printing methods.

CHARITY MATTERS Hoofbeats founder Sharon Vieira
Equine sanctuary faces winter challenges From humble beginnings nearly 20 years ago, Hoofbeats Equine Rehabilitation Sanctuary has grown year on year. A little known charity based on the outskirts of Plymouth, Hoofbeats has been hard at work successfully rescuing and rehoming over 150 horses and ponies of every shape, size and background. With around 25 residents currently in their care awaiting forever homes or being rehabilitated by a small team of dedicated volunteers, the sanctuary faces rising costs in winter and is seeking help. Sharon Vieira, founder of Hoofbeats said: “Winter has always been a difficult season for us, with wet and cold weather meaning our horses require extra help against the elements.” Caring for so many horses comes at a hefty cost; the charity predicts that their hay bill alone will be over £6000, with residents expected to eat their way through around 20 bales a month. “Add on the cost of feed, regular maintenance and waterproof rugs, and winter can be a daunting time, ” added Sharon. If this wasn’t enough to worry about, Hoofbeats fears the new microchipping law will add to rising costs. Introduced last October in the hope of preventing abuse and improving welfare, the law requires all equines to be microchipped and gives owners just two years to complete

the procedure. With such a large number of residents, Sharon explained how this will be expensive. "Each microchip costs between £20 and £30, plus the cost of the vet who will carry out the procedure. We also can’t forget our more difficult horses and ponies with behavioural problems and fear of humans.” Currently negotiating a minutely rate with local vets, Hoofbeats’ fundraising efforts are already well under way as a result. Despite increasing winter costs, the team at Hoofbeats remain positive. Focusing on spreading the word about their charity, Sharon explained that they have remained relatively unknown until recently. “We’ve been under the radar for too long so this past year we’ve really pushed ourselves to raise awareness of our work.” Having entered a competition run by a social media company, the sanctuary won a promotional video which was released last November. The charity hopes that the new emotive four minute video will help explain the work Hoofbeats does to both ‘horsey’ and ‘non-horsey’ folk alike. Showcasing their ‘as natural as possible’ set up, the video follows the Hoofbeats horses and ponies as they run as a herd and interact just as they would in the wild. Striving to use whatever rehabilitation and training methods work best for each individual, the sanctuary also prides itself on taking the time it takes with each resident to find them their forever
loving home. "With so much to cover, fitting all these elements into the short video time frame was no mean feat – but we are incredibly pleased with the end result” said Sharon. Sharon praised longterm supporter ‘The Farmyard Café’ which does a fantastic job at spreading the word on Hoofbeats’ behalf. “Being in close A welcome donation proximity to the for the sanctuary Hoofbeats site, the cafe enables us to provide a warm and welcoming place for volunteers to use as a base. Not only this, but local people can learn of our work through the donated space that we now use as a charity horse-wear shop; and we have definitely noticed a rise in interest in our work as a result.” Having heard of the charity’s imminent winter plight through staff at the café, Plymouth’s masons were recently able to assist the sanctuary, giving a £500 donation to help with their rising costs. Despite this generous donation, there is still a long way for the sanctuary to go in terms of costs, and the team are hard at work fundraising as we speak.

Dorothy, who is 78 and lives in Staddiscombe, had a hip replacement operation last year having already had both knees replaced since 2000. “My other hip needs replacing as well, but I don’t have a date for that yet,” she said. With her mobility impairment, Dorothy had found it increasingly difficult getting in and out of her bath. “I was really worried that if I fell in the process I could easily crack my head on the sink. It was a bit of a nightmare and I was constantly frightened that I might have an accident. “I knew I needed a new bathroom, but wasn’t sure how to proceed. Then my neighbours told me about their new bathroom and invited me to have a look at it,” she added. “I was really impressed with their new bathroom and knew straight away that was what I needed!” The neighbours’ bathroom had been supplied and installed by Dream Bathrooms, a family business based in Compton. So Dorothy contacted the company and met with proprietor Steve Short. “Steve was wonderful,” said Dorothy. “He gave me lots of help and advice in deciding how to convert my existing bathroom into something suitable for me, given my mobility problems.” Steve said: “Dorothy had a bath which was quite deep and difficult to access as well as a large sink which presented a potential hazard if she fell or tripped. There was very little room to move in the bathroom as it was previously laid out. “We needed to maximise the limited space available and

Dorothy’s bathroom dream has come true install the biggest shower we could to make life much easier and safer for Dorothy.” Steve designed a totally new layout for Dorothy’s bathroom, featuring a spacious shower with low level access and grab rails for added safety. A new comfort height toilet with concealed cistern, featuring soft closing seat and cover was also included, along with a stylish marble sink and vanity unit. A ladder towel rail and bathroom cabinet with mirror were also installed. Fittings included chrome rainfall shower head and separate rinse attachment and chrome mixer sink tap The bathroom was completely clad with floor-to-ceiling shower panelling featuring contrasting blizzard sparkle and classic marble finish. The work also involved complete replastering, new downlighters to replace the old strip lighting and matching grey cushion vinyl flooring. Dorothy said: “I’m absolutely delighted with my new bathroom. It has made such a huge Dorothy chats to Steve Short of Dream Bathrooms difference. IT has made life much easier and I feel so much safer and happier now.” The bathroom transformation project took just five days and Dorothy was impressed with the Dream Bathrooms team. “They kept the mess to a minimum and always tided up each night, which was greatly appreciated. The quality of the workmanship was second to none.” Dream Bathrooms have carried out similar projects for homeowners all across the city. They are experts in the installation of disabled and easy access bathrooms, wet rooms and walk in baths and showers. Steve said: “We are a family run business with traditional old fashioned values that we pride ourselves on. TRAVEL MATTERS
Taking in the sights and sounds of Singapore and Bali
Victor and Lisa enjoying the sights of Bali
The first thing I realised when planning my own holiday to Bali was that it was going to involve a lot of flying. The idea of a three-night stopover in Singapore along the way seemed the perfect way to break the journey and take in a city that had long been on my wish list. Lisa and I love city-breaks with New York far and away our favourite. Something we have learned on our many visits there is that the braver we are in terms of exploring the more we enjoy our time away. So how to approach a new and mysterious place we may never visit again? Obviously, I asked a travel agent! My brother Anthony had been to Singapore 10 years ago and recommended we hire a driver for the day to show us the main sights. This was great advice, but I was worried that unless we organised something before we travelled, valuable time would be lost sorting things out on arrival. To be honest when I texted the telephone number on the business card Anthony’s driver had given him all those years ago, I didn’t expect much. To my surprise Patrick OK Ngo replied within a couple of minutes and after a quick check on his prices I booked a 11am pick-up for our first morning. The flight from Heathrow to Singapore takes around 13 hours and we were glad to stretch our legs rather than riding the many electric-walkways to baggage reclaim. The airport is vast, clean and super well-organised. It wasn’t a shock when our cases appeared on the carousel almost instantly. What was rather unnerving was how few of our fellow passengers were staying here, clearly the vast majority had opted to fly onwards without a pit-stop. Our taxi transfer was standing-by and we were whisked to the Pan Pacific Hotel within a few minutes hardly having a moment to take in our new surroundings. Therein lies the problem with city breaks; by the time you’ve got your bearings it’s time to leave. The hotel was of a good standard and we upgraded to a Club Room to gain Victor and Lisa with access to a champagne breakfast and tour guidePatrick evening drinks with canapés. Although a
32\
The Plymouth Magazine February 2019
little more expensive than a standard room this gave us some structure to our stay and helped a lot with daily budgeting. There were certainly some guests taking full advantage of the 'free-drinks' and why not you’re on holiday. I still had my doubts as to whether Patrick our tour guide would turn-up, but at 10.50am my telephone buzzed, and he was waiting in reception. The By Victor Goord beauty of having a private tour is the opportunity to explain what you of Peter Goord would like to see and at what pace. Travel We saw lots, quickly and took full advantage of Patrick’s knowledge getting him to point out shops, bars and restaurants that we would explore later. By 4pm we had seen all the major sights, ridden the cable car and wandered around Chinatown in Patrick’s reassuring company. Thanks to this wonderful orientation the next couple of days were filled with adventure combining a bit of walking, public transport and the local version of Uber. It is amazing how much cheaper and more exciting a city becomes when you know your way around. Apart from the opportunity to break-up the journey our Singapore stay gave us the chance to book gentle lunchtime flights for the onward journey to Bali. It was lovely to arrive at The Elysian in time for afternoon tea and still catch the last couple of hours of sunshine sitting beside our own private pool before dinner. I’ve noticed increasingly our customers try to avoid night flights and early hotel check-outs when booking their own holidays and it certainly makes sense. You can often make your whole travelling experience so much nicer by paying a little more for convenient flight times. The town of Seminyak is the busiest and most commercial in Bali and we had chosen The Elysian Hotel very carefully
noting its position set back from the main drag, but still close to the beach. The distances were walkable, but it’s important to bear in mind the humidity when considering where to stay and occasionally we used taxis in the evenings. Indonesia remains fundamentally a Third World country and although you are perfectly safe this doesn’t stop the locals doing their best to fiddle you out of a few extra 'dollars' whenever possible. This is best illustrated by the constant warning you are given by the hotel and tour operator staff to only use the official Blue Bird Taxi Group. These drivers are easily identified as their cars are a unique pale blue colour and bear a distinct bluebird logo. All their fares are monitored and metered. On our second evening I confidently hailed down an official looking taxi only for Lisa to pull me back at the last moment. I had inadvertently mistaken a cunningly named 'Blue Biro' taxi with its virtually identical livery for the real thing. Apparently, this would only have resulted in a hugely inflated price for our short journey, perhaps £10 instead of £2, but it was an eyeopening experience. Most visitors to Bali enjoy a twin-centre holiday combining the scenery and culture of the north with a separate beach stay. As we only had a week, we decided to hire a driver and take a couple of day trips from our Seminyak base. This allowed us to make visits as diverse as ancient temples, a coffee plantation and a monkey forest, but I think in truth we probably only scratched the surface of this fascinating country. The main objective of our stay was a relaxing sunshine
TRAVEL MATTERS
break and The Elysian delivered this faultlessly. The hotel is made-up of just 27 private villa style rooms each with its own high-walled garden featuring a private pool and sun deck. Experiencing the ‘Bali If you preferred, Swing’ at Ubud was one of the highlights of the breakfast could be trip served directly to your villa and the quality of the food was excellent. I found myself craving their delicious Banana Pancakes every morning, just writing this article has my mouth watering, how strange it is what we remember most? Seminyak runs seamlessly along the beach into its slightly more traditional neighbours Legian and Kuta. The three combined offer an incredible array of places to shop, eat and drink. I don’t think the word commercialised captures quite how busy it is. Contrast this with our visit to Ubud in the heart of Bali where it felt like you could breathe in the culture. I found the eclectic mix of magnificent terraced fields, ancient monuments and an altogether quieter way of life quite charming. It’s hard to imagine we were on the same island. Bali is about extremes and it is possible to find a balance here to suit almost any tourist. Our long walks along the beach, stopping off at an impromptu bean-bag beach bar for a cool drink and stumbling upon new places to eat each day gave us the battery recharge we needed. I hope we will get the chance to visit again one day and perhaps allow ourselves more time to really get to know this wonderful country. I feel there are a lot more adventures to be had in alluring Bali. Happy holidays!

FAMILY MATTERS
Ana Broad (left) and Sam Wolf from Plymouth NSPCC Centre
Life-changing work of the NSPCC in Plymouth Children as young as four whose lives may have been turned upside down by sexual abuse are being helped to rebuild their lives by a dedicated team of NSPCC workers in Plymouth. Children’s service practitioners Ana Broad and Sam Wolf have opened up about the therapeutic sessions they run at the children’s charity’s local support centre at Cattedown, which includes early-intervention work with young people displaying harmful sexual behaviour. Ana Broad said: “We are very honest with children about the reason they are coming. We don’t shy away from that. It’s important for them to know that we know what happened and while we won’t push them or hurry them to talk about it, it isn’t a secret.” Children get to know their practitioner through weekly, hourly sessions that last up to a year. Their safe carer will also be supported as they’ll often be feeling shocked or confused themselves. They have an important role to play in helping their child move on in a positive way. “A child’s thoughts and worries
34\
The Plymouth Magazine February 2019
don’t just happen in that one hour a week," said Ana. “It might be they have a session with us and for the rest of the week they have thoughts pinging around their head. We need to be sure there is someone at home who can recognise what they need and support them through it.” Each child will choose the therapy room they want to be their safe space for their time on the programme. “The children, in a lot of cases, have missed out on predictability and safety, so for them to know exactly what to expect each time is reassuring,” added Ana. Children’s toys, sand pits, dolls houses, puppets and plastic figurines adorn the rooms, helping them communicate through play. Ana works with children on the Letting the Future In programme, which helps young people who have been sexually abused come to terms with their past and look towards the future. “I ask children to place people on different islands in the sand. Always island is safe and it’s their island they have ownership of,” said Ana. “Sometimes island has a bridge and the child has the key to the gate so those people can only come over
sometimes. And then they have far away island where they can put dangerous people.” The three-island method helps children indicate who the offender or offenders may be. Ana added: “It is important they feel free and safe to talk about whatever they want to in that room and that is respected.” Practitioners will be honest with children that if they need to talk to their parents, the police or managers for safeguarding reasons then they will. “I’ve had children draw me pictures of themselves with loads of worries around them and by the last session there are just a couple of worries,” she said. “One little girl I was seeing was a whole ball of emotions and was hurting herself because she was really muddled up about what happened. She was only four when she arrived. I saw that little girl change from a chaotic bundle of emotion to a much calmer child. “I love my work. I am proud of the little people I see and I wouldn’t do anything different.” The work Ana, Sam and their teams do can be life-changing for children and their families. Turn the Page, which supports children who are displaying harmful sexual behaviour, is quite different, but in both programmes the emotions are the same for the child - anger, frustration, guilt, shame and fear. Often children harm another sexually because of their own childhood experiences. Sam helps children recognise how
FAMILY MATTERS
they are behaving, what the triggers may be and aid them manage any harmful sexual thoughts they may have. “Research shows if a young person completes this programme through adolescence it has a huge implication on stopping that behaviour before it escalates,’ she says. “Young people are very different to adults. They may start to display harmful sexual behaviour because of neglect, domestic abuse, blurred sexual boundaries or access to sexualised material. We want to get them the support they need as soon as we can.” By safely working through their past experiences, Sam helps them identify healthy and harmful behaviour. The sessions are child-led and they’re given the time to talk about what’s happened. “A lot of young people come in very nervous, full of shame with their head down and offer no eye-contact,” said Sam. “Over time you build a therapeutic relationship with them and you see massive change as you go on a journey with them. Their confidence and knowledge grows and you see their ambition and drive for things to be a lot more positive.”

GARDENING MATTERS By Derek Anderson & Fiona Newton of Plymouth Garden Centre You don’t have to wait long for colour to start coming in the garden and in February we see lots of our familiar favourites bursting into bloom. Snowdrops are quintessentially reminiscent of woodland walks in late winter. They are the first signal that the seasons are preparing to change and things are on the move. They are a real stalwart that pushes on through regardless of the weather, easily shrugging off snow and frost. They can flower as early as January or as late as March depending on the season, but they generally come to their peak in February. The white hanging flowers are delicately scented and release a honey like scent that fills the air in warm days. They generally grow to a height of 15cm (6ins), depending on the variety, with the tallest being 22cm (8.5ins) and the smallest being 5cm (2ins). The spread after a few years can be between 30-60cm (1-2ft), but if left undisturbed they can form impressive carpets of white flowers in spring. Snowdrops can grow in most positions but prefer a shaded to partially shaded position ideally beneath shrubs or trees, where they can be left undisturbed. They will grow in most soil types but prefer a soil that doesn’t dry out too much in the summer. With Valentine’s Day this month, why not treat your loved one to a gift they can keep growing and cherish for years to come. We have a great selection of meaningful Roses
Plant of the month Our plant of the month for February is the Camellia. It’s a shrub with truly spectacular flowers. Nothing at this time of year can compete with the beauty and size of its flowers. The flowers are similar to roses in appearance and come in a wide range of colours from white, cream, pink, red and bi-coloured and can completely smother the plant. They are bright and showy and worth a spot in any garden. They can be grown in beds, borders or pots and need very little looking after. The only requirement they need is that they prefer acidic soil, so as long as you plant them in ericaceous soil or feed them with an acidic plant fertiliser they will be happy. They prefer a shady spot but will cope quite happily with full sun if kept moist. Camellias can vary in size from 2.4m (8’) to 5m (15’) depending the cultivar, so always make sure you check the labels. They can however be kept to a suitable size with pruning.

February f bursting in available such as You’re Beautiful, Truly Loved’ and All My Loving. For those who don’t like roses, why not give a red-themed arrangement, planted with primroses and tulips. We have a beautiful deep red double primrose aptly named ‘Valentine’ that looks great in pots and will make a beautiful, heartfelt gift. Speaking of primroses, they, like snowdrops, are another classic British woodlander. These pretty little plants never fail to impress and bring cheer in the gloomiest of days. The native variety holds a special place in the heart of many gardeners but it has been slowly disappearing from our woodlands and hedgerows over the years due to loss of habitat. Help revive this much loved British native by planting a few in your garden and letting them spread. From the original native primrose, many new varieties have been bred and growers have introduced a primrose variety in every colour of the spectrum, including double, single, stripped and bi-coloured blooms. There is one for every taste and colour scheme. Their large blooms and bright, bold colours make them perfect candidates for filling your pots and baskets at this time of year. They require very little maintenance, other than a little deadheading and will reward you with glorious colour throughout the entire spring. Plant them with spring flowering bulbs such as hyacinths, daffodils and tulips and you will have perfect, low maintenance, show stopping pots for months. They prefer a rich, fertile soil that doesn’t dry out, Westland’s Jacks Magic is perfect for them, in a partially shaded Lungwort spot. However if you are using them in your spring pots and baskets, then they will cope with full spring sun as long as they don’t dry out. When you change your baskets and pots over in the summer, just plant your primroses in a shady spot, out of the baking summer sun. A great group of companion plants for snowdrops, camellias and primroses are Pulmonarias (also known as Lungwort). These wonderful plants provide masses of flowers in spring, in shades of blue, pink, purple, red and white. They are native to Europe and some varieties grow wild in Britain which makes them perfectly able to thrive in British gardens. The most readily available Pulmonaria is Pulmonaria officinalis, which is often thought of as an old
With Plymouth Garden Centre
favourites nto bloom cottage garden plant, however with new recent introductions, such as Pulmonaria Blue Ensign, they are starting to be viewed as trendy and quite contemporary. This is a variety that produces green, velvety strap like leaves that the purest blue star shaped flowers stand above, from afar, it resembles a giant gentian. Unlike other varieties the flowers remain blue and don’t fade. Many Pulmonarias start out blue or purple and fade to pink or red, meaning that a single plant can have many clusters of different coloured flowers at the same time. After they have finished flowering, they then put on a fresh flush of foliage, the foliage in its own right is enough reason to grow them. The leaves tend to be green, with silver spots, blotches, streaks or near enough entirely silver. They are very attractive and compliment summer flowering perennials such as the acid green flowers of Euphorbias (especially those with plum coloured foliage), the pale green leaves and vibrant flowers of Hemerocallis and the pretty golden grasses, such as Carex or Hakonechloa. The best place to grow Pulmonarias is in a cool, shady place, under trees or shrubs or at the base of a shady wall or fence is perfect. Pulmonarias hate drying out in summer, this can cause them to get mildew, keep them moist and it won’t be an issue. Don’t forget to look at our advert on page 35 and use your special reader vouchers! Happy Gardening! Fiona & Derek
