15 years on - and still going strong

07714 281353 07880 515702

This month I’m delighted to report that we are celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Plymouth Magazine. It was in May 2004 that our first edition was distributed in the city and since then we have published every month - apart from one in the early years when we combined our December and January issues. Today, we’re proud of the fact that the Plymouth Magazine has grown to become not only the largest free distribution magazine of its kind in the city - but also in Devon and the the rest of the South West. It’s thanks to the continued support of advertisers - many of which have been with us for many years - that we have been able to steadily increase distribution and pagination over the years. In the last 15 years we have been delighted to highlight all the good things going on in the city as well as reporting on the achievements and successes of individuals, businesses, charities and other voluntary organisations. In particular we have endeavoured to promote local independent and family-run businesses - which truly represent the backbone of the local economy. The retail sector in particular has had to cope with significant challenges in the last decade-and-a-half and we remain committed to supporting local retailers whenever we can. There have been a lot of changes in Plymouth over the last 15 years - many of them for the better. We’ve seen the Drake Circus development, regeneration of Devonport and latterly North Prospect as well as the city’s growing prominence in marine industries. We look forward to bringing our readers more good news in the coming months and years. Today we are just a few months away from the start of the Mayflower 400 celebrations - and we will be reporting on the many activities and events that will be celebrated between November this year and November 2020. Here’s to the rest of 2019, 2020 and all the years beyond!

PLYMOUTH MATTERS

Colin’s mammoth masterpiece inspired by Zheng

Colin Pethick

When gifted local artist Colin Pethick learned of the opportunity to lend his talent to St Luke’s by painting one of the elephant sculptures for this summer’s Elmer’s Big Parade, it was an opportunity he simply didn’t want to miss. It was the chance to support his local hospice and at the same time pay tribute to his wonderful wife Zheng, who was cared for by St Luke’s before she passed away. Just recently, Colin has been busy completing his masterpiece at St Luke’s Herd HQ at Western Approach, giving the public the opportunity to see part of his painting process on the rather unusual ‘canvas’ of a three-dimensional elephant sculpture. Watching him at work and hearing him speak, it is clear Colin’s creation – which he has called ‘The Beauty of Transcience’ – is a real labour of love for Zheng, whom he met while in China. Her influence and that of her homeland shine through, as does his great affection for her, as he speaks movingly of their time together before Colin with sadly, Zheng, who his wife Zheng had cancer, died. Having met later in life while Colin – who is also an art tutor – was on an internship in China, the two enjoyed a long distance friendship, corresponding as penpals before Colin returned to Zheng and

PLYMOUTH MATTERS proposed two years later. They were married the very next day in Chengdu, near Tibet. Colin said: “When we met, Zheng was working as an interpreter and she was also an artist, and we hit it off. After we married and she came to live with me in the UK, she did an art degree at the University of Plymouth, which she so enjoyed – she was a really good painter and I learned so much from her. “We had ten wonderful years together before she was diagnosed. They told us she had this very rare form of lung cancer; there was no history of it in her family. “It was towards the end that St Luke’s became involved, and it was the Crisis team who got her well enough to stay with me at home because it was her wish to die there. The care was just so good all round and I never would have coped without St Luke’s help.” Alongside Colin through this heart-breaking time was St Luke’s bereavement support worker Andy Searle, providing a listening ear when he needed it most. And it was Andy, knowing Colin’s artistic talent as well as his high opinion of St Luke’s, who brought to his attention the opportunity to submit a design for one of the mammoth mob of elephant sculptures for Elmer’s Big Parade. Colin said: “I just thought, yes, what a fantastic project! And it’s the least I can do to give something back. “My Elmer is like a little legacy for Zheng, of all the things she liked – the things that got her going as an artist and the things we celebrated. I managed to work them into the design, which I’ve called ‘The Beauty of Transience’. “I’ve woven in a lot of Chinese and Japanese visual cultural

references and symbols of transcience, of mortality, that they use there. So the theme is life and death, and how you deal with death. "It was Andy’s bereavement support that was such a help to me – it made a tremendous difference. He said to me quite early on, 'You’ll find that the good memories will come through. The good things you did together, they will outweigh the bad times.' "He then really got me to talk about the bad times, and he was right. I found that tremendously cathartic.” Having perfected his painting, Colin is now looking forward to seeing his Elmer among the others that will make up St Luke’s sculpture trail with a difference. He said: “It’s exciting! Elmer’s Big Parade is educational and will work on so many levels. It’s lovely to have the opportunity to be involved. I thank St Luke’s, I really do.” Elmer’s Big Parade will run in Plymouth from July 8 to September 16 and is a partnership between St Luke’s, Wild in Art and Andersen Press, encouraging open and honest conversations about the ‘taboo’ subjects of death, dying and bereavement that can help us all, including schoolchildren who are bereaved and those who strive to support them. The project will also raise money for St Luke’s – the finale being the auction of the 40 unique elephant sculptures to secure funds to further its compassionate care.

BUSINESS MATTERS Neil Stallard (left) and Edward Waite

Host Galleries marks first birthday with ‘The Big One’ Exhibition Plymouth’s Host Galleries is celebrating its first anniversary with a major two-week exhibition in May, featuring its three best-selling artists. The artists include Edward Waite, whose exhibition helped to launch the gallery over the Easter holiday weekend last year. Joining him is Amy Louise, who also happens to be Edward’s wife, and Ben Jeffery. All three are creating brand new collections especially for the exhibition, which is called ‘The Big One’ and runs from May 4 to 19. There’s a real treat in store for art lovers, with the chance to meet and see the artists at work in a ‘live studio’ at the gallery in Whimple Street from midday to 5pm on Saturday May 4: “I think this Amy Louise must be a first, getting three artists in a live studio at the same time,” said Host Galleries owner Neil Stallard. “I’ve asked them to create new collections that I think will go down really well here and the pieces will be taking over the entire gallery for the two weeks.” Edward, who is well known internationally for his cityscapes, is presenting ‘Merging Concepts’ – a collection of 3-D resin pieces; Amy is exhibiting a new set of paintings that show off her quirky take on the natural world; and Ben, who is best known for his striking paintings of superheroes,

is creating a “British Icon series’ with a twist – paintings of some of Britain’s iconic figures, including Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Cary Grant and the Rolling Stones. When Neil opened Host Galleries, his aim was to bring something completely new to Plymouth and the wider South West – and it’s safe to say he has succeeded. At the outset, he completely renovated the building to create the stunning space. And, with white leather sofas and tables and chairs, the gallery is somewhere for people to meet and chat about art. “The first year has exceeded all our expectations,” he said. “There’s nowhere else with the same offering in the region, which is one of the reasons we get people from all across the South West visiting us. “And the gallery is constantly evolving,” he added. “Every two to three weeks we ensure the gallery is refreshed with new pieces by UK and international artists so that every time you come in, there’s something new to see. Around that, we also have regular exhibitions. This year, I’m putting the focus on themes and we have some very strong exhibitions with a number of artists in each of them.” Following on from The Big One, the Flora exhibition from June 2 to 17 features artists Leanne Christie, Jean Picton, Victoria France and Kimberly Harris, and from July 6 to 21, the gallery is hosting

Graffito, a collective of artists who take their inspiration from aspects of urban culture. Among them is street artist, Mr Cenz, who has 40,000 followers on Instagram: “He is immense,” said Neil. “He will have the entire back wall of the gallery. Again, this is something completely new for Plymouth.” There are further exhibitions later in the year – ‘New Horizons’ in August, focusing on the dramatic style of seascapes and skylines – and ‘Animal Magic’ in the autumn. For Neil, finding and bringing artists to the gallery is one of the best parts of the job: “My passion is creativity and I love the process of working with the artists, of coming up with something that works for the people of Plymouth. But we are still establishing ourselves and now, it’s about building an offering that people want.” As part of that, Host Galleries has just taken on a specialist frame-maker and is offering a framing service for customers. And Neil is also keen to showcase the work of local talent: “We are now working with more local artists, like Martin Bush, Tamsin Pearse, Eve Hayman, Lara Phillips, and our first sculptor, Elisabeth Hadley. It’s important for us to connect with the local art community and it’s something I always planned to do.” But it’s not just here in Plymouth where Host Galleries is making a mark. The gallery has also hosted three international exhibitions in Los Angeles (with Andrei

Protsouk), Dubai (with Edward Waite) and at the Sundance Film Festival (with Ben Jeffery): “I’ve been using my contacts overseas to help find new international markets for UK artists and I’m pleased to say that those events were well received. “Another highlight of the past year for me was when we hosted a charity exhibition here for local people with learning disabilities and autism who are supported by Yourway. Seeing the look on their faces when they saw their work exhibited in the gallery was wonderful.” The Big One exhibition is sponsored by Plymouth firm, Sound Financial Management, and there are sponsorship opportunities for other local companies to get involved with future exhibitions – contact Neil to discuss the benefits. Exhibition show times are 9am – 5.30pm on Monday to Saturday and midday to 4pm on Sundays. Normal opening times outside of exhibitions are 10am – 5pm on Monday to Saturday and midday to 4pm on Sundays. Visit the Host Galleries website for more about all the exhibitions and artists at the gallery and the new framing service. Ryan's reader recipe! Ryan Marsland

Here’s the latest in our new magazine feature in which talented chef Ryan Marsland of The Fig Tree@36 restaurant in Stonehouse shares a recipe for one of their popular dishes. In this issue Ryan introduces readers to one of their popular dishes. Ryan said: "We’ve had hummus on our menu in one variation or another since we opened. It’s such a versatile dish, a quick snack, starter, a light lunch or as part of a meze plate, perfect now the warm weather is coming (he says as the hail beats down on the restaurant window!!) “Hummus is quite a simple recipe, with just a few core ingredients, but the simplest recipes are the ones that get taken for granted…. I’ve had great hummus, but I’ve definitely had poor hummus as well! “You can use tinned chickpeas, but I’d always advise going for dried, you have to think slightly in advance, but its worth it, tinned chickpeas have that, erm, well tinned flavour!

Hummus - Fig Tree favourite Ingredients 300g dried chickpeas – soaked in water in the fridge overnight 3 tbsp tahini 6 tbsp rape seed oil 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3 cloves of garlic A pinch of cumin seeds 1 lemon squeezed Instructions Drain your soaked chick peas, put in a pan and boil until soft. Drain and allow to cool. Put all ingredients except oils into a blender. As they blend down slowly add the oils, a lot of recipes use just olive oil, I find it too strong, so a combination of olive and rape seed oil works well for me. The mix will take all the oil. The secret of a good, light and smooth hummus is the blending, we blend ours for about 5 minutes, the hummus should actually be slightly warm when it has bended enough. Try tasting it after a minute and then after 4 or 5 minutes, I guarantee you’ll taste the difference. Now your hummus has finished blending, season to your taste with sea salt and fresh cracked black pepper. That’s it you’re done. We like to serve ours with fresh lemon, smoked oil, normal olive oil is good also, and lots of fresh bread. The possibilities are endless though, you can top with spices, feta, goats’ cheese, fresh crunchy veggies, fresh veg purees (carrot/butternut) stirred into your humus give it another twist or a simple pesto, made by blending herbs, parmesan, nuts, garlic, lemon and oil. We also love picking fresh figs from our tree and slicing them on top. So, as you can see a fairly straight forward recipe but a lovely complex and flavourful dish.

Jane and Peter’s new kitchen is designed to perfection From an empty shell, to a contemporary kitchen that’s still in keeping with the character of a village home – and all the work completed to a tight schedule. No wonder Peter and Jane Jordan are delighted they appointed Plymouthbased family firm KF Kitchens to create their fabulous new kitchen and utility room. The couple bought their house in Newton Ferrers last year and one of the first things they did was to completely gut the downstairs, getting rid of the old kitchen: “We ripped it all out,” said Peter. “We wanted to have a much more modern, open plan living area, so the old fireplace had to go to create enough space for a functional kitchen island. When KF Kitchens first came to see us, all that was left was a shell of a room.” The design dilemma that Peter and Jane faced was that they wanted a kitchen and dining area that was light, bright and had a feeling of space. They also wanted plenty of storage and hi-tech appliances. At the same time, the house is full of character and the kitchen had to reflect that. Enter Nathan, Simon, Derinda and the rest of the KF Kitchens crew: “The design they came up with achieved exactly what we wanted, a kitchen with straight lines, lots of space and a nice big island area to work on with plenty of practical storage. Basically, Nathan, who

designed it, did what worked – and at a very reasonable cost.” Jane initially emailed KF Kitchens after learning that they are able to fit kitchens by her favoured kitchen brand, Burbidge: “We went into their showroom one Saturday lunchtime and they fitted us in for a consultation there and then. Nathan was very enthusiastic and offered lots of great advice. “The other thing that impressed us was that Nathan drew up the design and gave us a cost immediately. It’s important to know what you’re getting for your money at an early stage so you can budget accordingly. “He’d say: ‘My view is this’ or ‘this would work better than that and here’s why’ – and that sort of advice is very helpful. There are so many options, but they guide you through them very well. They didn’t try to sell us anything we didn’t want. They weren’t pushy. In fact, the whole process was very enjoyable.” The fitting and associated plumbing and flooring all went smoothly, with the work done within the allotted time schedule. The main part of the kitchen is fitted with Burbidge Barnes shaker style white-painted timber doors, with a Blanco ceramic sink and a Quooker boiling tap. The appliances, by NEFF, are a slide-andhide steam combo main oven; a compact microwave combo oven; a large warming

drawer; a built-in dishwasher and a 60/40 fridgefreezer. Cupboards include concealed waste bin and a larder with attached spice rack and basket-style pull-out drawers. The island is fitted with Burbidge Barnes shaker style painted doors in a shade called putty. It has four sets of drawers with pull-outs, and a NEFF induction hob. There is also a feature wine rack and book case at one end to maximise the space. The granite worktops were supplied and fitted by Mayflower Stone, and the flooring is timber-effect Karndean stripwood which has been used through into the hall and utility room areas. The utility room, meanwhile, offers an additional sink and matching Burbidge Barnes style storage cupboards. Jane explained why she chose two different colours for the kitchen: “I wanted neutral colours and the white makes the main part of the kitchen nice and bright. But we went for a slightly different colour as the kitchen moves into the dining area, so that the island complements the furniture in that area. As the walls and units are neutral, we decided we needed a statement feature to tie the room together, so went for a bold patterned granite worktop. For us, the kitchen works perfectly. It’s a blend of old and new, and we are very pleased with it.” And she added: “I would definitely recommend KF Kitchens. From the design stage through to the fitting stage, it was a very positive experience, handled by an extremely capable and experienced team.”

The Plymouth Magazine May 2019

Famed for their award-winning approach to modern British dining, acclaimed chefs, restaurateurs and brothers, Chris and James Tanner, are celebrating two decades of serving Plymouth with this year marking their 20th year in the restaurant trade. At the heart of the city’s dining scene since 1999, and despite not being Devon natives, both Chris and James have become stars of the South West’s food industry, championing local produce and suppliers, while winning a reputation for creating simple, high quality, delicious food. Opening their first restaurant, Tanners 20 years ago, the brothers have gone on to serve over a million guests, with their Barbican based brasserie, Barbican Kitchen, now a staple on the historic waterfront strip. Playing a starring role in the resurgence of the region’s dining scene, Chris and James talked to the Plymouth Magazine about the future of the city’s food industry, their favourite memories from the past two decades, as well as how keeping it simple is their recipe for success.

Food for thought

Although born in Kent, the brothers were drawn to Devon after visiting the region as children, with Chris Tanner saying: “Our love affair with the region started more than 40 years ago, and we regularly went on family holidays to Devon’s coast – which included sailing on the River Dart. "When it came to opening a business and raising our families, Britain’s Ocean City

FOOD MATTERS

seemed like the perfect setting, offering an ideal mixture of modern and country living. “The region is also home to some of the best ingredients and produce, with everything from meat and fish to vegetables available just a stone’s throw from our doorstep – for us, there was no better location to launch a restaurant.” The risk paid off, with the launch of the brother’s first joint venture and fine dining restaurant, Tanners, in 1999, which quickly grew to become one of the city’s most popular eateries. With their success growing, the brothers soon saw an opportunity to bring casual dining to the city, opening the Barbican Kitchen in the world-famous Plymouth Gin distillery in 2006. Talking about one of their favourite moments from the past two decades, James Tanner said: “Winning AA Restaurant of the Year for England in 2006 at Tanners was a career defining moment for us, and it felt fantastic to not only earn that level of recognition, but also know that people were loving our approach to food!”

Keeping it simple

Despite making the difficult decision to close Tanners after 15 years to focus on running the Barbican Kitchen, the brothers have continued to go from strength to strength. Talking about the key to their success, James said: “It’s about offering good food at a realistic price, and while tastes, trends and appetites might change over the years, our approach to food hasn’t. “We are focused on keeping it simple and not overcrowding a dish, using only the best in high quality, locally sourced ingredients from our network of regional suppliers – many of which have been working with us since day one! "While our menus are always evolving to reflect what’s in season, we are also known for doing the traditional well – for example, we have been using the same beer batter recipe for 20 years, which has always been one of our diner’s favourites!”

Foodie future

Talking about the future of the city’s dining scene, Chris said: “The future looks good for dining in Plymouth, and we hope to see a few more independent eateries popping up across the city. We would love for people to support them by visiting them regularly, rather than just every once in a while. “People are also more interested in knowing where the food on their plate is coming from, so it’s important that independent businesses, like ours, support local suppliers – many of which are the best in the country. "We hope that the Barbican Kitchen will always be part of the iconic Plymouth Gin Distillery, and look forward to welcoming our customers back over the next 20 years!”

time? And can the woodland be saved? Apr 24 - 27 THE DEPARTMENT OF DISTRACTIONS The Department of Distractions: an organisation so clandestine you won’t have heard of them. Until now. They say their job is to plant stories in the world “to make life more interesting”. Others would argue that their job is as much to stop us looking in certain directions. But things are starting to unravel. A story they started has got out of hand, they’ve lost control of it and now they’re in danger of being exposed. How far will they go to maintain their anonymity? How much are you willing to believe? May 7 - 11 NATIONAL THEATRE CONNECTIONS 2019 The National Theatre Connections festival is a celebration of young people, theatre-making and the importance of access to the arts. Each year, ten new plays are commissioned for young people to perform, bringing together some of the most exciting writers with the theatre-makers of tomorrow. With 30 Partner Theatre festivals taking place across the country, Connections 2019 will involve at least 5,000 talented young people.

Surrealistic Belgian humour bursts with delightful absurdities and hilarious scenes. When Cherry, Stella’s daughter, brings her artist husband Evan home for the first time, Stella is shocked by the bohemian incompleteness of their marriage. Now Paul can enjoy his weekend footie! Paul Fenton enjoys refereeing knockabout football when his seven-year-old son James plays with his friends in Looe. They love that time together as busy dad Paul often works away from home but until recently it was always a painful experience. “My feet hurt during and after with all the running,” said Paul. “I never put much thought into my shoes. I had three priorities: shopping quickly, for a cheap price, with a bit of comfort thrown in. I never considered that shoes could have such an impact on my health.” Years of buying inappropriate footwear worsened Paul’s foot health, resulting in pain, unsightly hard skin, slightly deformed toes and thickened nails. His first trip to Foot Solutions and City Centre Chiropody in Plymouth’s Royal Parade has changed all that. “The free foot health assessment was something I never knew could be done in a shoe shop,” he said. “From that, they found Brooks trainers that fitted perfectly. The improvement was immediate.” Now weekend footie, without pain, is something Paul looks forward to with James and his pals. Paul also needed shoes to wear in his job; he spends hours filming conferences, driving between UK venues and needed to look smart and have comfort at the same time. “Foot Solutions came up with the goods again,” he said. “While I was being fitted for the shoes, Karen Scowcroft from the clinic upstairs (City Centre Chiropody) suggested I see about improving the damage I’d done wearing the wrong types of shoes.” HCPC Qualified podiatrists at City Centre Chiropody carry out a full medical history and then get to work improving foot health, treating conditions like heel pain, forefoot pain, ingrown toenails, calluses, hard skin, bunions, as well as bio-mechanical issues in the lower limbs.

Paul and soccer mad son James

“Karen did a fantastic job, sorting out the mess I had made of my feet. The difference after that one treatment was fabulous,” said Paul. “I can feel the improvement in my feet, and see it, too. This has made me realise the big improvements that are possible from investing a little time and money into my feet. It’s been a light bulb moment for me!”

This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life. There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place at The Hoe on Sunday June 16 and Central Park on Sunday September 29. Ruth Chamings, Cancer Research UK’s Plymouth event manager, said: “Our Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients in Devon access to the latest treatments. “You don’t have to be sporty to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like.” Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. Ruth added: “Our Race for Life events have been women-only since they started, over 25 years ago. But we now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone - women, men and children – has the chance to participate together. “One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer, at some point during their lifetime. Sadly, this means nearly everyone is touched by the disease, either directly or through a loved one or friend. “To make a significant difference in the fight against cancer we need to harness as much energy and commitment as possible – so what better way than involving everyone in the community in our events.”

FOR THE LOVE OF GARDENING! You would be forgiven for thinking that Tamar View Nurseries was part of a large national chain, such is the extent and variety of the product lines it sells. However, this remarkable garden centre is owned and run by local couple Mike and Pauline Hooper and managed by a team who have levels of energy, passion and enthusiasm that leave many of us gasping in awe. Both the overall manager, Anthea, and shop manager, Dean, have spent most of their lives working with plants. They naturally choose good quality from reputable suppliers, simply because they love growing things!

“Tamar View is known as the Gardeners’ Garden Centre” explained Anthea. “We buy locally, reducing freight and packaging which keeps the plants healthy - although our seed potatoes come from Scotland as the harder winters mean that they are more disease resistant.” This wealth of background knowledge means that Anthea, who does most of the buying, is able to get the best value for money from her suppliers, passing on those savings to customers with serious discounts while stocks last on offers that change regularly. And those savings are not just on plants and all you need to grow them, but can also be found on a wide range of garden furniture, homeware and gifts. Shop manager, Dean and his team are always on hand to direct customers around the expansive shop floor to help them find what they are looking for, and to give advice from their extensive product knowledge. They currently stock the widest selection of plants and garden furniture ever, so there is loads of information to find out. Customers can feel free to enjoy browsing with the certainty that if they need help it is readily available.

There is a huge range of genuinely homemade food on offer from Jim, the head chef, and Mandy who runs the restaurant and bakes the sumptuous variety of cakes daily in the restaurant’s kitchen. Be prepared to loosen your belt a notch, without needing to empty your wallet.

Dean (shop manager) and Hazel (nursery manager)

The final word to sum up Tamar View’s unique atmosphere goes to nursery manager, Hazel, who has worked in the garden centre for over 12 years: “We are like a family here and work as a great team. As we are an independent centre we like to source locally as possible, which includes finding my husband who is the assistant shop manager!”

Local exhibitions Unti May 22 EXHIBITION: THE UNKNOWN KNOWNS The Levinsky Gallery, Roland Levinsky Building, University of Plymouth In a world where data is as valuable as land, how vigilantly are we protecting our most prized assets, and how much of ourselves is available on the open market? By sharing our personal preferences, thumbprints and 3D face scans, how easily can we be tracked and influenced and who is watching on the other side of the tele screen? In ‘The Unknown Knowns’, Plymouth based curator Vickie Fear brings together artists using appropriated material to expose hidden truths and ask questions about the world we live in, making connections between artists who draw from a range of sources, including public archives and popular culture. Contained in these works are conversations about privacy, media influence, propaganda, colonialism and truth. Are we living in science fiction? What are we really scared of? And if the known unknowns are the things we know that we don’t know, what don’t we know that we know? Until Jun 1 MEETING THE ARCHIVE: STEVEN PAIGE The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art Meeting the Archive is the culmination of the practice component of the artists PhD including new and existing work that investigates how artists are able to draw attention to the instability and heterogeneity of archives. This exhibition is made up of a series of moving image works created through seeking and responding to instructive footage in collections within institutions. The work takes a playful approach to watching bodies ‘perform’ and then uses re-enactment strategies to interpret and physically explore new ways of understanding the archive. Within this, Paige’s ongoing interests in personal betterment, instruction-led activity, humour and his lived experiences are played out. May 4 - 19 HOST GALLERIES 1ST YEAR CELEBRATION EXHIBITION Host Galleries, Whimple Street Meet the artists in person, this is a first for any gallery. During the show, there will be four of the gallery’s top selling artists going in for the day celebrations. All four artists will be in the gallery performing a ‘live studio’ where they will be working on new paintings during the day. www.cornerstonevision.com

Plymouth History Festival returns for a seventh year

Plymouth History Festival returns for the seventh year in May. Since it began in 2013, the festival - which highlights Plymouth’s diverse history and heritage - has featured hundreds of events which have been attended by thousands of local residents and visitors. From talks, guided walks and behind the scenes tours, to performances, family activities, exhibitions and displays – there’s always something for everyone on the jam packed programme. This year the festival will run from May 4 to May 31 and will feature scores of different activities and events. Celebrating Plymouth is always the central theme of the festival. For 2019, event providers are also being asked to consider the themes of ‘Empowerment’, ‘Journeys’ and ‘The Great Outdoors’. Councillor Peter Smith, Deputy Leader said: “Plymouth History Festival goes from strength to strength every year. Plymouth has such an amazing history and the festival

programme always gives people a chance to discover more about it. I hope as many organisations, societies and individuals as possible will get involved and I am looking forward to the 2019 festival being a big success.” The popular Local Studies Day opens the festival programme on May 4 at the Roland Levinsky Building in Plymouth University, running from 9am to 4.30pm. It will feature a packed programme of speakers and specialist exhibitors from across the area. Visitors will be able to discover more about the region’s community, social and archival heritage and be a part of it, as this event is facilitated for the first time by members of the community heritage networks. Topics explored this year include the Elizabethan House, community archives and what’s next for Plymouth as the city awaits the opening of The Box.

PROPERTY MATTERS

‘Hartley Gardens of Eden’ – a modern paradise in Mannamead Interest in one of Plymouth’s premier new build projects, hailed as a haven of style and contemporary living, is gathering pace. The prestigious development at Hartley Gardens may still be in its infancy construction wise, but three plots have already been sold - such is the demand for the range of

36\

The Plymouth Magazine May 2019

three, four and five-bedroom properties Combining traditional architectural styles with the best in contemporary living, the high-quality specification and outstanding decorative finish of each home is appealing to a very particular type of purchaser. Chris Mervyn, marketing director at Lawson Estate Agents said: “Both the style and build quality of the homes, and of

course its enviable location, meant the development was always likely to appeal to professionals and those looking for a contemporary designed new build property with superb finishing touches. “This certainly appears to be the case and demand is certain to get even higher as the show home nears completion. It will have a real wow factor!” Given Hartley Gardens is situated in one of Plymouth’s most desirable post codes, it’s little surprise that every property in the development is built to the most exacting of finishes and boasts outstanding specifications. This includes, energy efficient, gas fired central heating, integrated appliances and underfloor heating on selected plots. Superior specification is matched by a commitment to security and peace of mind. There’s a high security front door, mains linked smoke detector with battery backup and 10-year Premier Guarantee Warranty. It is a development that caters to the most discerning of buyers. Combining light airy interiors, stunning contemporary kitchens and bathrooms, it oozes modernity and is very much a lifestyle choice for now – and into the future. But it is a site steeped in heritage too as it was once home to Hartley House and its famous resident, Major General Sir Leonard Rogers, a renowned professor, physician and lecturer in tropical medicine. A founder member of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Sir Leonard is perhaps best known for pioneering the treatment of cholera with hypertonic saline. Appropriate then, that Hartley Gardens is perfectly located for easy access to Derriford and the Nuffield Hospital, as well as being close to range of leisure pursuits, including a tennis club.

PROPERTY MATTERS

Properties blend traditional architectural styles with bold contemporary living spaces. For example, the threebedroom semi-detached Hawthorn is a stunning, two storey house that’s available with guest cloakroom and a living room with adjoining kitchen/diner on the ground floor. The first floor boasts two good sized, double bedrooms, including a master bedroom complete with en-suite shower room and a third bedroom. There’s parking for two cars too. The four-bedroom detached Periwinkle offers open space with its generously sized living, dining and kitchen area. There’s also a study along with utility room, guest cloakroom and integral garage. On the first floor, there are three double bedrooms including a master with en-suite shower room, a family bathroom and an additional single bedroom. The Elder is a five-bedroom detached house and is the last word in beautiful design and open plan living. There’s a stunning, generously sized kitchen/diner with equally spacious living room. Again, it offers a study downstairs, along with a utility room, cloakroom and access to a double integral garage. Upstairs, two of the four good sized, double bedrooms boast en-suite shower rooms with the addition of a good sized, single bedroom and a family bathroom. The Elder occupies a generously sized plot and offers great views across the city.

TRAVEL MATTERS

From the Maldives to Malaysia – top tips for year-round holidays

This month I would like to share with you my suggestions for the best time of year to travel to various destinations. My tips are not only when the weather is at its best, but also, in some cases the best value for money, or the quietest. There are many many more places I can recommend, but here are a few examples:

By Travel Expert

January

The Maldives: This collection of tropical islands is one of the world’s ‘year-round’ destinations. If you’re looking for that picture-perfect blue sky, and minimal rainfall, January is a great time to visit with showers at a year-round low and eight hours of sunshine. It’s a perfect temperature to relax and indulge in the most breath-taking surroundings.

Anthony Goord

February

Thailand: Lying in the centre of the tropics, Thailand’s rainfall can vary dramatically month to month as well as between different parts of the country. However, whether you’re at a beach part in Phuket or laying in a hammock in Koh Samui, February is a perfect time to choose. Temperatures rarely fluctuate and showers are at their lowest of the year.

March

India: It’s hard to find a country with such a diverse culture as India. After the full moon of each March, the people celebrate the festival of colour, Holi. I’m sure you have seen the pictures of streets awash with vivid colour as dyed powder and water are thrown around. Do not wear your best clothes! If this is a little too much for you, March is a perfect

38\

The Plymouth Magazine May 2019

time to visit the serene backwaters of Kerala where the festivities are a little calmer.

April

The Caribbean: I could mention all of the Caribbean Islands from November through to May being great destinations for winter sunshine. January and February tend to be the driest months, but by avoiding hurricane season June-October you can normally rely on excellent weather. Flying direct to Antigua, St Lucia or Barbados make these islands more attractive, or you could consider a Caribbean cruise instead seeing a selection of the islands all on one holiday.

May

Mauritius: The beautifully diverse island country of Mauritius has much to offer for sunseekers with its sublime mix of tropical warmth and cooling breeze. May is a great time to visit as cyclone rain drops off and a humid heat of its summer decreases. What’s more, prices tend to be the lowest this time of year.

June

Italy: One of my favourite countries in the world, Italy has so much to offer. Historic cities, lakes and mountains in the north to beach destinations in the south, there is somewhere for everyone’s taste. June is a good month as the weather is very warm, and again prices are less than the peak summer month. Bali: This tropical Indonesian island is one of the top honeymoon destinations in the world. Temperatures are pretty level each month so Bali is certainly a ‘year-round’ destination. With its beautiful beaches, tranquil retreat and lush jungle interior it’s popularity is no surprise.

July

Seychelles: Unlike many other Indian Ocean and Caribbean beach destinations, the Seychelles tends to have its driest weather during the summer months. Hotels are generally of a high standard and remote, so be careful with the cost of food and drinks if not included in the package.

TRAVEL MATTERS South Africa: This is winter in South Africa, but because of the lack of greenery you have a much better chance of catching a glimpse of the ‘Big Five’ on game drives in Kruger or Shamwari. If you decide to visit the cosmopolitan city of ‘Cape Town’, July is also a prime season for whale watching.

August

Namibia: Still relatively unknown to many tourists so it’s a good choice if you’re looking for something quieter. A mix of national parks, sand dunes and authentic African towns makes it a very unique destination. August is an excellent time to visit not only for the cool and dry weather but also the abundant wildlife you can spot.

September

Sri Lanka: It shares a lot of cultural heritage with it’s busier neighbour India. Perhaps the most popular (and cost effective) way to view the Sri Lankan landscape is to hire a car and driver, offering local insight and an authentic take on the cultural highlights at a pace that suits you. Kenya: During September the stunning natural wonder known as the Great Wildebeest Migration moves North from the Tanzanian area of the Serengeti to the lusher pastures of the Masai Mara in Kenya. Renowned for perhaps being the

www.cornerstonevision.com

@PlymMag

@PlymMag

greatest time and place to go on safari.

October

Cuba: Whether it’s the colour vibrancy of the capital Havana, or the fabulous beaches of Varadero, it’s easy to see why Cuba is becoming more popular each year. October is one of the quietest months so prices are low. Why not try a twin centre with beach and Havana for two holidays in one.

November

Dubai: Known for its luxury hotels, stunning beaches, excellent service and year-round warm weather, where rain is a rarity. November the temperature drops to a comfortable 25 degrees, perfect for not just a single centre holiday but also as a stopover to various African and Asian holiday spots.

December

Malaysia: See the orangutans of Borneo, taste the wondrous flavours of Penang or experience the tranquillity of Pangkor Laut. December (before the Christmas peak) is a great time to visit to get the most for your money. Food is heavily influenced by China and India so there are plenty of in-expensive, yet delicious, options in the markets and street stalls. Happy Holidays!

Or perhaps you’re looking for something that’s greener and softer than your tired-looking patio, a surface that the children can play on safely. Recent advances in technology means that artificial lawns now look just like the real thing and more and more homeowners are choosing to have them installed. Yelvertonbased family firm, Green Scheme, have been designing and installing artificial lawns for 10 years and say the looks, feel and durability have all improved beyond recognition in that time. Owner Simon White believes there are a combination of factors why so many people in the Plymouth area, especially, are making the switch: “With all the hills in Plymouth, a lot of homeowners have gardens that have steep slopes,” he explained. “Mowing the lawn can therefore be very difficult, particularly for older people. “But we are finding younger people are also choosing an artificial lawn. They have busy work and family lives and they don’t have the time to be constantly mowing the lawn. When they do get some ‘down’ time, they’d rather spend it relaxing in the garden. Another factor is that many new homes have small lawns that don’t warrant expenditure on a lawn mower, so homebuyers are getting an artificial lawn installed as soon as they move in.” Green Scheme don’t simply offer a ‘remove and install’ job for customers. For those who also have borders or an irregular shaped lawn, Simon can design the area to make the borders bigger or smaller, according to the customer’s requirements. “Having borders keeps the effect looking very natural,” said Simon. “Some people have made their borders bigger over the years to reduce the amount of lawn they have to mow. We can restore the lawn and borders to their original size if that’s what the customer wishes. We can also put a focal point in, for example, if the customer wants a central bed to plant a feature in the middle of the lawn.” One recent happy customer is Brian Crawford, from Plympton St Maurice. Brian wanted to remove the lawn at his 18th century cottage while retaining the charm of his country cottage garden: “It’s beautiful in the summer, a riot of colour. But a large Acer tree shaded the lawn a lot of the time, so it was always tatty, covered in leaves and basically looking in poor shape. It was high maintenance. “Now, it’s a piece of cake. All I have to do is clear the leaves

with a stiff brush or the leaf-blower, and even that’s not really necessary. It means I can concentrate on the pruning and the borders and not worry about the lawn. I can sit and read a book out there instead! “And it looks entirely authentic – I don’t think anyone would look at the lawn and think it’s not real.” For Brian’s lawn, Simon and a colleague used a special metal edging to help shape it, so it fits perfectly with the borders. Brian chose a ‘bowling green’ effect lawn in vibrant green, but Green Scheme also offer a more informal ‘meadow’ grass which has a muted olive colour. The grasses have a realistic brown root mass at the base which creates a very authentic finish overall. The diverse range of grasses means there’s something to suit everyone. There is a pet-friendly range and grasses that are tough enough to withstand family football games. One of the advantages of a mud-free artificial lawn is that it allows outdoor play all year, whatever the weather. The lawns come with a UV stability guarantee so they will not fade in the sunlight. A quick brush up with a stiff brush to clear fallen leaves and an occasional check that no airborne seeds have taken root, and the lawn should stay looking great for years to come. “It is in effect a carpet for the outdoors – the only difference is that it’s easy to clean,” said Simon. “If you spill some red wine, it just washes off. And if there is any accidental damage, we can cut out that area and replace it.” Green Scheme celebrates its 10th anniversary later this year. As well as artificial lawns, the firm also installs other low maintenance garden surfaces such as non-slip Millboard composite decking that has a 25-year guarantee. Because it’s not made of wood it will never rot; it just needs a wash-down once or twice a year: “It looks like wood, but it doesn’t have the maintenance headaches,” said Simon. “With the composite decking and the artificial grass installed together, the only thing left to do is to tend to the plants.”

Brian, for one, was glad he contacted Green Scheme to do the job: “They were extremely efficient and they had it all done in a day. There wasn’t a single blip, everything went completely smoothly. They even improved the borders so that the whole garden looked great. I would certainly recommend them to others.” The company also offers a service for schools, playgrounds and other public spaces. ART MATTERS

Artist Becky Elia has always been fascinated by colours. But it’s not just the colours in themselves that interest her, it’s the science of colours and how our perceptions of them change depending on how they are presented to us.

Currently, Becky’s colour-of-choice is Ultramarine blue. It was her blue-inspired installation that caught the eye of the judges of the 2018 Delamore Arts Prize, awarded each year to the most promising artist to graduate from Plymouth College of Art’s Painting, Drawing and Printmaking Course. The prize includes a cash sum to help the artist at the start of their career and the opportunity to exhibit at the monthlong Delamore Arts and Sculpture Exhibition which takes place at Delamore House & Gardens in Cornwood every day in May, each year. The award is judged on the work shown at the college’s end-of-course exhibition. For Becky’s exhibit, she created a blue room with blue resin lenses for the ceiling light source and three white plinths. Each plinth had a small pile of colour pigment sitting on the top – one yellow, one blue and one red. Becky, 21, has recreated the installation for Delamore Arts – by taking over a potting shed at the house: “They’ve given me full reign over the shed, so with some help I’ve been able to give it a complete makeover,” said Becky. “The shed isn’t as big as the room at the college, so there will be one large plinth rather than three, to allow visitors the space to move around the exhibit.” When Becky started the piece as part of her Ultramarine Blue Project, she could simply have made a traditional painting … however: “It turned into something much bigger – it was a blue light experiment that ended up as a blue room! I try to push everything I do, and this is a perfect example of that. “I was looking into the value of blue,” she explained, “because centuries ago the pigment used to create blue paint, Lapis Lazuli, was more expensive than gold. That’s why the Renaissance artists used blue very sparingly – it had to be for something special, like Mary’s cloak. I was fascinated by how unobtainable the colour blue was in any raw form, so I created a lens, by filling a mould with resin and adding thin blue pigments into the resin, as a way to preserve and possess the precious colour and make it obtainable forever. “I then project light though the lens, which fills the surrounding space with an immersive, ethereal blue hue. By doing this, I make the colour unobtainable again - this is my way of performing a kind of alchemy using science, art and nature. “This is when it started to develop into an installation, because I wanted something that immersed the viewer into it. I’m interested in the science of colour and how we perceive colours in different lights, which is where I got the idea of placing colour pigments on top of the plinths in a blue room. “I am encouraging participation from the viewer so they can move around the room and get in touch with the colour blue, almost like they are floating in a void. And there is an opportunity within the installation for the audience to get involved and to question what we think we know about colours, for example, if we perceive colours differently depending on the surrounding environment. Does that change the reality of the colours - by altering our understanding and therefore definition of what we see? Do colours exist just because we perceive them? Do we all see colour the same way? What is colour?”

anything but o Delamore Arts

Becky will also be exhibiting some of her paintings, which continue the blue theme and will also include gold leaf – “but used differently to how gold leaf is traditionally used in art”. The invitation to exhibit at an established regional event is a chance for Becky not just to show and sell her work – last year’s Delamore Arts attracted a record 8,000 visitors – but also to network with other artists and sculptors and discuss potential collaborations. Becky has a studio in Ivybridge but prefers to work from home – she uses the front room of her house in Greenbank as her studio: “Everyone has to start somewhere, and Delamore have given me an amazing start. It’s a wonderful venue and it will be a great experience for me. Ultimately, I’d love to be a full-time artist with my own studio at home, and I’m a believer that if you’re passionate about what you’re doing, then opportunities will come along.” Becky is the third winner of the Delamore Prize, which was

ART MATTERS introduced by the owners of Delamore, Gavin and Nicky Dollard, as part of their work in supporting local artists. Gavin said: “We were really taken by Becky’s extraordinary use of colours and light through an unusual medium. The result is a stunning light show that’s not often seen. I hope that visitors to Delamore will enjoy seeing it, too.” This year, around 150 painters and sculptors are exhibiting at Delamore. The main exhibition of paintings takes place in the house, with Becky’s installation in the specially created ‘Blue Room’ and the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Art having a dedicated exhibition space in Delamore’s Stables Gallery. The sculptures are set within the gardens. The annual event has raised around £120,000 for its chosen charities since the first exhibition in 2003. This year’s charity, Children’s Hospice South West, are creating a memory tree in the garden, where visitors can write a message and hang them up. Visitors should give themselves a full day to enjoy the exhibition and gardens, and there is a café selling home-made snacks. Opening times are 10.30am to 4.30pm every day in May including weekends and bank holidays. Admission is £8 and includes a printed catalogue. Parking is free and dogs are welcomed in the car park field and around the lake, but not inside the formal gardens. www.delamore-art. co.uk. GARDENING MATTERS By Fiona Newton and Rebecca Rose of Plymouth Garden Centre Our living spaces are no longer confined to the four walls of our houses. Gardens are an extension of our homes, and with summer just around the corner, we want them to be colourful, bursting with plants and life. But with our often busy and hectic lives, and our gardens becoming smaller, can you achieve this? Simply… yes, you can. Read on.

All you need to thrillers, spille

Plant of the month Euryops –also known as the Savannah Daisy or African Bush Daisy. The first thing you may notice is that it is yellow. A colour many gardeners stay away from in Summer months. Perhaps Spring brings so much yellow we are ready for other colours, perhaps yellow can be too much under the long summer days of sun. However, this pretty shrub defies all this. It has a perfect ratio of flowers to leaves, growing to a spherical shape with the gentle daisy-shaped flower heads standing above the leaves like the aura around the sun. It’s no wonder people say it is illuminating. The leaves themselves have an almost magical glow, more viridian in colour, a chrome-grey-green, which makes the flowers stand out whilst softening the yellowness. Flowering all season and into autumn, it is evergreen and perfectly suited to the Mediterranean garden. Being naturally found in rocky areas of the Western

Jobs for May If our editorial didn’t hint at it enough… it’s time to start preparing your hanging baskets and pots! Although we are in full Spring mode, let them sit in a porch or greenhouse for a week or so, ensuring any risk of frost has passed and allowing them to establish. An established plant will have a better root system and helps increase their drought tolerance over the summer months. As the days become drier, ensure you are watering your thirsty crops enough. Veg like tomatoes, cucumber, courgettes etc need a lot of moisture, but make sure you don’t overdo it and waterlog the soil either. Apply a lawn feed now, and always fertilise after mowing not before. Add a little fertiliser to your Spring bulbs, this will help them store the nutrients they need before you dig them up to store and produce an even greater display the next year! Pests, pests and more pests. Check roses for aphids or blackspot and treat accordingly. Check all plants for vine weevil, caterpillars, cabbage worm, evidence of slugs, snails. scent of the flowers filling the air. It can fill a trellis quite quickly and is strong so it is an excellent choice. It is evergreen, but with red and green leaves that change colour throughout the year. The dark green leaves during flowering makes the pure white flowers really stand out, but by turning red/bronze through winter it always looks beautiful wherever you grow it. Interesting evergreen foliage is a must for the Star Jasmine city garden, so that the concrete landscape never looks bare or unappealing. The Photinia is another plant which is really popular at the moment. It is an excellent choice for screening and hedging but also as an architectural lollipop in a pot. Its popularity is based on its colour and again, as an evergreen shrub it provides all year colour and needs very little maintenance. Now that we are heading quickly Photinia for summer, start making the most of the longer and increasingly warmer evening. Have a barbecue, grab a blanket and curl up in your arbour with a good book. Enjoy your outside living space! Happy Gardening - Becky and Fiona www.cornerstonevision.com
