The future of the great British public house need not be in jeopardy if we learn lessons from its past says Andrew P. Lugger, Solicitor

Described by Samuel Pepys as ‘the heart of England’, the British pub is a time served institution and important to preserve for a great number of reasons. Nearly every adult has ventured inside a pub at sometime to drink or have something to eat. It is a convenient meeting place and in the cherished days before online dating, one in four people met their future spouse there. In the 18th and 19th centuries, before the establishment of the police courts, the pub was central to local justice, accommodating the petty sessions (the forerunner of the magistrates’ courts) and public auctions were commonly held in the boozer together with coroners’ inquests and meetings of Freemasons. In addition to selling your favourite tipple, the trusty old ‘local’ has been the traditional focus of community life in villages, towns and cities for centuries.

Andrew Lugger

So how did it all begin? Beer was once the common British beverage at every meal and all but a few members of society habitually enjoyed drinking. However, the wine guzzling invading Roman army disliked it, but we owe a debt of gratitude to their navvies for building long, straight roads as Roman pubs known as tabernae (meaning a place selling wine) were quickly erected alongside to help quench the thirst of the marching troops. The tabernae quickly adapted to provide the native British brew and the word eventually became converted to ‘tavern’. The Beer Act 1830 introduced a new lower tier of premises permitted to sell alcohol. For the payment of two guineas, a rate payer was able to brew and sell beer in his home and the tap room is the forerunner of the public bar. The country was soon flooded with alehouses as a result of this statute. Over the years, taverns and alehouses provided food and drink to their guests, whilst the traditional inns offered accommodation for weary travellers. The Morley Arms at Plymstock is an example of an early 19th century inn. Sadly, many pubs are now closing their doors - some after hundreds of years of trading. It is estimated that 18 pubs close every week across the UK and half the closures have happened since the smoking ban of 2007. Not discouraged by

this, the writer has recently invested in the sector and believes there is hope if licensees ‘look outside the box’ and offer community based activities within the pub and diversify like other industries have in recent years. In many communities, the pub is the only readily-available, indoor, voluminous open space that can accommodate large gatherings. Many have sound systems and projectors. In the same way the pub of the 18th and 19th centuries was used for all sorts of nondrinking activities, what is suggested is a Renaissance. Publicans should take professional advice from a solicitor if new Permitted Activities are to be introduced on the Premises Licence and/or a variation of the lease is required. Preparing for all eventualities is something which anyone who runs a pub or any business should always be mindful of. Have you taken steps to ensure that someone can issue your invoices, pay your creditors, pay your staff or act as a key person in the event that you are unable through illness or accident to protect your livelihood? If not, you should consider a Business Lasting Power of Attorney. Andy Lugger is a publican and consultant solicitor specialising in the licensed trade and commercial property generally. He will be only too pleased to advise further. Summer in the city is looking so good Now that Spring is officially upon us, it reminds me that Summer is just around the corner - and it’s time to start looking forward to all the brilliant events that Plymouth has to offer in the coming months. There’s a fantastic schedule of family events starting with the popular Pirates Weekend in May, followed by the Lord Mayor’s Day and then Flavour Fest in June, which just gets bigger and bigger. Two big names have been announced already and you can read about them on pages 24 and 25 of this issue. Around 50,000 people are expected to flock to The Hoe for Armed Forces Day at the end of June, while a similar number of spectators will be at the same location for the British Fireworks Championships on August 14 and 15. Earlier the same week music lovers can enjoy the Ocean City Blues N Jazz Festival, another free event when the Barbican will be full of sounds of blues and jazz over three days. Moving into September, it’s time for the Plymouth Seafood Festival, now in it’s eighth year. The festival brings The Barbican and Sutton Harbour alive with entertainment, activities and dishes to celebrate the city’s fantastic caught seafood. We’ll have more details of all these events in upcoming editions of the magazine, including a 24-page Summer Guide in our May issue. And, of course, later in the year the official celebrations to mark Mayflower 400 will get under way. It just gets better and better in Plymouth...

Indirect contact in family cases Associate Chartered Legal Executive Alexandra Boardman from The Family Law Company looks at what indirect contact means. Alexandra Boardman

Our memories of our childhood can be mixed. We often hold on to the memory of apparently huge injustices following a particular incident, which seemed very important at the time, right into our adulthood. Some experiences have a significant impact on our development, shaping and forming who we turn into as adults.

The keepsake letter Not so long ago I was given a letter that was sent to me when I was six years old. I have vague memories of knowing about the letter at the time but, being only six and having had a few significant changes in my life at that time, it did not mean that much to me. I was caught up with being a child along with all the cares and worries I had at that time. Now, however, that letter has become very important to me. I keep it in a special keepsake box. Although I’ve only read the letter a few times I no longer need to read it to remember the content, which has changed my perception of what was happening to

me at that time in my life. If anything, having it has allowed me to appreciate the intention behind the letter, even if it made no difference to the situation then or what was later to happen. I imagine this is one of the benefits of becoming an adult - being able to reflect back and see things with a new perspective.

What happens if parental involvement is deemed unsafe? In family cases there is a presumption of continued parental involvement and the presumption that a child’s welfare will be best served by the involvement of each of the child’s parents in his or her life unless it can be shown that such involvement would not in fact further the child’s welfare. The court has to balance the interest of the child spending time with both parents with safeguarding issues. These may mean that at that time it is not considered safe for a child to spend time with one or both of their parents, for whatever reason. Steps taken by a parent can change this and so this provision may be only temporary. However, in some circumstances it will be for a long period, if not all of the child’s minority. If this is the case, one way of ensuring that a child

knows his or her parent(s), who they are not currently spending time with or living with, still thinks of them and still loves them, is via indirect contact.

What is indirect contact? Indirect contact can take various forms but includes sending child-appropriate cards, letters, and/or small gifts to a child on a regular basis. This can be done weekly, fortnightly, monthly or on specific occasions such as birthdays, Christmas and Easter (or any combination of these). If a child is reluctant to receive cards, letters, or small gifts at this stage, they can be kept in a keepsake box for the child to look at when they become curious, or to have when they are older. A child may not appreciate the indirect contact provision at this stage in their life. But it may be that as they grow up or when they become an adult, they can look back at the communication provided by that absent parent and see it in a new context. This can be useful in helping them to reconcile their feelings. If you need help with any of the issues raised here, please contact Alex on 01752 674999 or email us at: enquiries@thefamilylawco. com

MARINE MATTERS

Plymouth leads the way with marine park development Coastal cities are among the fastest growing population centres on the planet and half of the global population now lives within 100km of the coast. But as these often fast growing urban communities expand, their reliance on the seas – and the potential damage caused to them – is increasing. One potential solution is to create a city marine park, connecting urban areas on the coast and their people with the reciprocal benefits the marine environment can offer. Plymouth is currently undergoing this process with officials having committed to designating the surrounding sea as the UK’s first National Marine Park. Now researchers from the University of Plymouth, writing in Marine Policy, have detailed how other cities – in both developed and developing countries across the world – can follow in its footsteps. The study has been led by experts in maritime law, marine ecology, marine policy, social science and ecological economics from the University’s Marine and Coastal Policy Research Unit. It proposes a collaborative approach that would see communities taking the lead in creating initiatives that help people harness and promote the benefits of their unique marine environment. In particular, researchers highlight how city marine parks could contribute to the wellbeing of a community and its people in terms of enhanced health, economic prosperity and sustainability. The study’s lead author Dr Simon Pittman, visiting research fellow at Plymouth University and director of Seascape Research CIC, said: "Whether you live in Melbourne, Mumbai, Miami or any other coastal city in the world, the ocean can be an important factor in your life. But it is vital for communities

8\

The Plymouth Magazine April 2019

to deepen the connection and really focus on developing a mutually beneficial relationship with the ocean for greater economic, environmental, social and health benefits. "We believe the city marine park concept provides the means to do that, essentially providing a gift from the city to itself in terms of securing a prosperous, healthy and sustainable future for coastal cities.” The study – which also involved researchers linked to the Nautical Archaeology Society, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the University of Exeter, the United Nations Environment Programme, Plymouth City Council, Schumacher College and the University of Wales – highlights the key objectives of creating city marine parks. They address many of the aspirations set out in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and include: equality of access and social inclusion; marine literacy and citizenship; business partnerships for positive social and environmental impacts; celebration of marine and maritime heritage; place identity, place-branding and civic pride; community health and wellbeing; and joined-up inclusive stewardship. Professor of Marine Ecology Martin Attrill has been a longtime advocate of the marine park idea, and is playing an integral role in Plymouth’s current initiative. He added: “We live in an era where the world’s seas have been heavily impacted by human activity and remain under serious threat. But there is also increased awareness and recognition that the global population has a crucial role to play in safeguarding their future. Identifying ways for coastal cities to benefit from the seas and vice versa is a hugely positive step, and city marine parks can be a catalyst for real change in terms of the relationship between the citizens of coastal cities and their marine surroundings.”

Jane and Peter’s new kitchen is designed to perfection From an empty shell, to a contemporary kitchen that’s still in keeping with the character of a village home – and all the work completed to a tight schedule. No wonder Peter and Jane Jordan are delighted they appointed Plymouthbased family firm KF Kitchens to create their fabulous new kitchen and utility room. The couple bought their house in Newton Ferrers last year and one of the first things they did was to completely gut the downstairs, getting rid of the old kitchen: “We ripped it all out,” said Peter. “We wanted to have a much more modern, open plan living area, so the old fireplace had to go to create enough space for a functional kitchen island. When KF Kitchens first came to see us, all that was left was a shell of a room.” The design dilemma that Peter and Jane faced was that they wanted a kitchen and dining area that was light, bright and had a feeling of space. They also wanted plenty of storage and hi-tech appliances. At the same time, the house is full of character and the kitchen had to reflect that. Enter Nathan, Simon, Derinda and the rest of the KF Kitchens crew: “The design they came up with achieved exactly what we wanted, a kitchen with straight lines, lots of space and a nice big island area to work on with plenty of practical storage. Basically, Nathan, who

designed it, did what worked – and at a very reasonable cost.” Jane initially emailed KF Kitchens after learning that they are able to fit kitchens by her favoured kitchen brand, Burbidge: “We went into their showroom one Saturday lunchtime and they fitted us in for a consultation there and then. Nathan was very enthusiastic and offered lots of great advice. “The other thing that impressed us was that Nathan drew up the design and gave us a cost immediately. It’s important to know what you’re getting for your money at an early stage so you can budget accordingly. “He’d say: ‘My view is this’ or ‘this would work better than that and here’s why’ – and that sort of advice is very helpful. There are so many options, but they guide you through them very well. They didn’t try to sell us anything we didn’t want. They weren’t pushy. In fact, the whole process was very enjoyable.” The fitting and associated plumbing and flooring all went smoothly, with the work done within the allotted time schedule. The main part of the kitchen is fitted with Burbidge Barnes shaker style white-painted timber doors, with a Blanco ceramic sink and a Quooker boiling tap. The appliances, by NEFF, are a slide-andhide steam combo main oven; a compact microwave combo oven; a large warming

drawer; a built-in dishwasher and a 60/40 fridgefreezer. Cupboards include concealed waste bin and a larder with attached spice rack and basket-style pull-out drawers. The island is fitted with Burbidge Barnes shaker style painted doors in a shade called putty. It has four sets of drawers with pull-outs, and a NEFF induction hob. There is also a feature wine rack and book case at one end to maximise the space. The granite worktops were supplied and fitted by Mayflower Stone, and the flooring is timber-effect Karndean stripwood which has been used through into the hall and utility room areas. The utility room, meanwhile, offers an additional sink and matching Burbidge Barnes style storage cupboards. Jane explained why she chose two different colours for the kitchen: “I wanted neutral colours and the white makes the main part of the kitchen nice and bright. But we went for a slightly different colour as the kitchen moves into the dining area, so that the island complements the furniture in that area. As the walls and units are neutral, we decided we needed a statement feature to tie the room together, so went for a bold patterned granite worktop. For us, the kitchen works perfectly. It’s a blend of old and new, and we are very pleased with it.” And she added: “I would definitely recommend KF Kitchens. From the design stage through to the fitting stage, it was a very positive experience, handled by an extremely capable and experienced team.”

WOMEN AT WORK Zoe and labrador Zeus

It’s puppy love for Guide Dog volunteer Zoe as she launches her own business Ever wondered how guide dogs get to be so good at their job? It’s down to people like Zoe Hamilton Wynne, who volunteer to take them in as one of their family to train them up for their later role in life. So far, Zoe, from Peverell, has prepared five puppies (Hatti, Nordi, Elsa, Clover and Zeus) for their advanced training – including her first one, Hatti, who has since become something of a celebrity. Hatti, a black Labrador/retriever cross, is the guide dog for double Paralympic gold medallist Libby Clegg, who won the T11 100m and 200m titles in Rio in 2016. In an interview shortly before those Games, Libby said: “Without Hatti, I’m not me. She gives me the freedom to do what I want and live my life how I want.” But even intelligent guide dogs like Hatti need a guiding hand, especially at the start of their ‘careers’. It takes an average of 20 months to train a guide dog and Zoe’s job is to take them in when they’re very young to start teaching them essential guide dog behaviours, prior to further training. Joining Zoe and her latest pup, Zeus, in Central Park, it’s immediately obvious that for Puppy Walkers, a walk in the park is anything but a walk in the park. “It’s hard work!” says Zoe. “You’re constantly teaching and reinforcing the behaviours they’ll need to become guide dogs. For example, they must learn that they can’t pull on the lead and they shouldn’t become distracted. The job is to get them socialised as early as possible in the circumstances they will find themselves in. When they leave me, they should be wellbalanced and well-trained.” The length of time the puppies stay with Zoe depends how quick they are to mature and be ready for advanced training: “One went at 13 months, another at Hatti, under training 22 months, it really depends on the on the Hoe individual dog.” There are around two million people in the UK living with some degree of sight loss. Zoe’s own father was one of those affected: “My dad suffered the gradual complete loss of his sight through macular degeneration – he had no sight at all just before he died. My siblings and I cared for him, but because he also had issues with his memory at the end, a guide dog wasn’t suitable for him. “I’ve always loved animals and dogs, especially, ever since I was teeny-tiny, but seeing the impact of sight loss made me feel passionately

10\

The Plymouth Magazine April 2019

that I wanted to do something to help people affected. And Guide Dogs are such a lovely community of people, they’re a joy to work with.” Luckily for Zoe, the rest of the family – husband Anthony and daughters Ianthe, 13 and Saffron, 11 – are also big animal lovers: “The girls were very young when I started doing the puppy walking and I thought it was a good way to introduce them to the idea of charitable work. They’ve also learned how to say goodbye, but in a good way. “Some people say: ‘Oh, how can you let the puppies go? I couldn’t do that.’ But that’s their purpose. And we keep up with how they’re getting on. When Libby qualified with Hatti – because the owner and the dog qualify together – Libby sent me some beautiful flowers.” Libby, who’s an ambassador for Guide Dogs, had Hatti by her side when she collected her MBE at Buckingham Palace in 2017. Now, after several years as a Guide Dog volunteer, Zoe has set up her own business, Well Heeled Hounds, which she runs alongside her voluntary work with the charity. Zoe offers her professional services in all things canine, Libby Clegg and Hatti including new puppy support and advice, one-to-one training, a pop-in service, and dog walking. She decided to follow her passion after a career in research psychology in the pharmaceutical sector: “I was working 50 hours a week and I was doing

the puppy training at the same time. I thought: ‘Why am I selling my soul?’ I wanted a different lifestyle, I wanted to see my girls grow up, and I wanted to do something I’m passionate about. “So I left my job in October and launched Well Heeled Hounds in the New Year. Now, I’m working to live, not living to work. I wake up on Monday mornings and say ‘Yes, it’s Monday!’ I’m living the dream, and I couldn’t be happier.” So, what are Zoe’s top tips for puppy owners? First off, she recommends all new puppy owners attend puppy classes as it helps to socialise the dog and it’s a good experience for the owner, too. Her method for developing good behaviour is a combination of positive reinforcement, and consistent direction and reward – and this must come from everyone in frequent contact with the dog, to prevent confusion in the dog about what behaviour is expected. It’s also important to create a positive association for the dog with its name, from day one. Zoe is a Gold Member of NarpsUK, the professional association for pet sitters and dog walkers. She follows strict standards, including a maximum of four dogs on a walk. She is fully insured and GDPR-compliant and has undergone criminal record checks. She is currently doing a course in canine first aid. Visit the Well Heeled Hounds website for a list of services and flexible packages or call Zoe to arrange a free initial consultation. BUSINESS MATTERS

Top for quality – that’s Mortgages4Plymouth! The team, with business partners Anne-Marie Reilly and Tricia Kennedy at the front

Meet the team behind Plymouth’s multi award-winning mortgage and protection brokers, Mortgages4Plymouth. The Peverell-based firm is part of the PRIMIS Mortgage Network – the largest provider of mortgages in the country, responsible for one in 10 mortgages in the UK today. So, to win the network’s 2019 Top Firm – Quality Award for outstanding service is something worth shouting about. The award is based on client feedback and in Mortgages4Plymouth’s case, the feedback has been unanimously positive with not a single customer complaint! It’s the latest industry award for Mortgages4Plymouth, which is owned by business partners Tricia Kennedy and Anne-Marie Reilly. In 2018, Tricia won the Top Individual – Quality award and was also the recipient of the inaugural prize for Outstanding Contribution to the Network. Stepping into the offices in Peverell Park Road, you get the feeling right away that this is a mortgage firm unlike many others. For a start, you’re welcomed by Tricia’s friendly dog, Miss Ellie, who even has a business profile – ‘Client Relations Manager’ – on the company website: “She does all the meets and greets,” says Tricia. “She’s six now and she’s been here since she was seven weeks old, so she’s very experienced.” It’s all part of the relaxed, “come on in and have a cuppa” feel. The second thing you notice is all the awards on display, so quality and trust is clearly a given. Of the nine-strong team, three are fully qualified mortgage and protection advisers and the rest are either qualified or are undergoing qualification as CeMAP mortgage advisers: “That level of expertise in one office is extremely unusual and, together with our experience, it explains why the team has won the network’s Quality award. We have outstanding testimonials

12\

The Plymouth Magazine April 2019

and that’s because we’ve got a great team.” Finally, and possibly the biggest difference of all, is the personal approach: “I’ve been in the business for 39 years and I don’t think this is a job you can do successfully without compassion,” explains Tricia. “I respect that some people have been through a hard time. Some might have had a difficult divorce. Others might have been turned away for a mortgage without receiving any advice at all. “Well, they won’t be turned away from me. “I’m always here to listen and I hear quite a lot of difficult Tricia Kennedy, stories about what’s holding the happened. If someone national PRIMIS isn’t in a position to Mortgage Network get a mortgage now, award for Top Firm we’ll help them to 2019 - Quality, try and get into the with her dog, Miss position where they Ellie, who is a bit can buy a house. We’ll of a character in look at their position the office.

and help them to get things moving. “We also make sure that in the event of anything happening to someone who takes out a mortgage with us, their family doesn’t lose their home. This sort of care is very important to me. It’s a reason why a good life assurance policy is essential.” Today, Tricia’s experience and standing have made her a wellknown figure nationally in the industry. But when she started out in the sector in 1980, she was one of the first women in financial services – and it might never have happened at all, had she not spotted a newspaper advert for a job in a toy factory and wrongly dialled the number next to it. The number belonged to Hambro Life – further down the line to become PRIMIS Mortgage Network – and the rest is history. After initially working as a financial consultant, she switched to mortgages and life assurance in 1995. Then, in 2000, she and Anne-Marie founded Mortgages4Plymouth. The company moved to its current premises three years later. “The business has always been based in Plymouth and I have always worked for the same network,” said Tricia. “The network’s name might have changed a few times – it was Allied Dunbar for a while – but technically, it’s the same people since Day 1. And that is very rare. There aren’t a lot of brokers who can say that.” So, how’s the housing market looking in Plymouth right now? Well, despite nervousness surrounding Brexit, there are currently more people looking for homes than there are homes available, which is holding house prices steady: “Demand is outweighing supply – and it’s first time buyers who are very active,” revealed Tricia. The network provides 9,000 mortgages a month nationally,

but, says Tricia: “In other parts of the country, most home buyers go to brokers for their mortgage. In London, 85% of mortgages are done through brokers. In Plymouth, however, people still tend to go to their bank, where they’re likely to pay a higher rate. “Buyers who come to us only need a 5% deposit and we have very low mortgage rates, starting from 2.55%. There are no up-front charges and, for first time buyers, there are deals available where they get £1,000 cash back. Because we’re not tied to any bank, we can offer a wider range of rates and deals that aren’t available on the High Street. So there are plenty of affordable mortgages available.” While some in the sector have fallen by the wayside down the years, Mortgages4Plymouth is set to grow further in 2019. And next year, Tricia will be celebrating 40 years in the business – not bad going for someone who thought they were applying for a job in toys in 1980! Whether you’re a first-time buyer, looking to moving homes, re-mortgaging or considering a buy-to-let, call the Mortgages4Plymouth team to book a free, initial no obligation appointment. Office hours are 9am to 5.30pm, and weekend appointments are available. Visit the website to learn more about the firm’s mortgage and life insurance services.

FOOD MATTERS

Vegan store opens with a bang!

Plymouth Vegan Co owners (from left) Sophie Lines, Jo Lines, Charlotte Harris and Chris Harris

Plymouth’s first vegan supermarket opened its doors at the beginning of March - and it’s already proving a big success. Owners Jo lines, her daughter Sophie and Chris and Charlotte Harris came up with the idea of a one-stop shop for vegans at the end of last year. Jo and Chris had known each other for a number of years as both are committee members of the Federation of Small Businesses in Plymouth. The new outlet in Faraday Mill was previously operated by Chris and Charlotte as a gift store called House of Harris, mainly selling Yankee Candles. They also own an online vegan hamper business called Wild Radish and when they got chatting with Jo the idea for the launch of the Plymouth Vegan Co was birthed. Jo, who already runs a number of property-based businesses, became a vegan last year after after attending a personal coaching course, which introduced her to plant-based diets. Jo said: “People are vegans for many different reasons. For me it was about health.” Her daughter Sophie, 19, who is also vegan, said: “The idea was to create a mini-supermarket stocking totally vegan products, as well as gluten free and lactose free items, including fresh fruit and veg, health food, sweets, snacks, protein bars, non-dairy drinks, fridge and freezer products – it’s essentially a one stop shop.” The store has around 1,000 different lines and the range is being added to every day. “If we haven’t got a product that a vegan customer wants we will do our best to order it in,” said

14\

Chris. “We also plan to introduce alcohol lines and arrange home deliveries in the coming months.” They are using as many local suppliers as possible and will soon introduce a product of the week, complete with tasting sessions. One of their main suppliers is Saltash-based Tamar Fresh, who deliver fresh fruit and vegetables as well as vegan sandwiches and wraps. “We want to make this a place where the vegan community can come and enjoy their shopping experience,” said Jo. “They can park right outside and when they come into the store they can rest assured in the knowledge that everything we sell is suitable for them.” Sophie said: “According to the latest statistics a record-breaking 250,000 people signed up for the 2019 Veganuary campaign this year. Veganism has increased by 350 per cent in the UK in the last 10 years. “It’s not yet mainstream. However it’s not going anywhere anytime soon with not only celebrities and athletes promoting the positives of a plant based diet, but also countries such as China encouraging their nation to reduce their meat consumption by 50 per cent,” she added. The store is open seven days a week and has space to expand into a neighbouring warehouse if needed.

WHAT’S ON

THE LYRIC Royal Parade Plymouth Box Office 01752 267222 www.theatreroyal.com Mar 18 - 23 ROUGH CROSSING Two famous, but desperate playwrights are stuck on an ocean liner headed for New York, feverishly trying to rehearse their latest show before reaching land and opening night. But they are constantly distracted by their delicate composer’s attempts to end it all, having overheard his lover confess her feelings to the leading man. Add an absurdly unorthodox waiter, a mistimed lifeboat drill and a vanishing glass of brandy and soon the sharp Atlantic winds turn to world-class gales of laughter as these colourful characters become tangled up in a typically Stoppardian string of absurd events. Erica’s ‘life-changing’ visit to Foot Solutions Foot pain almost made Erica Simpson give up on her ambition to walk the South West Coast Path, until she found some much needed relief. “60 years of farm life and living in my wellies”, is the reason she gave when asked how her feet had started to trouble her. Erica, from near Bodmin, visited Foot Solutions at 34 Royal Parade after she read a testimonial from a satisfied customer in her local WI County News. “I’ve walked the Coast Path in stages from Minehead to Bigbury,” said Erica. “The discomfort became so bad I was lucky to be able to do 10 miles a day. I had to strap my feet and use plenty of ‘Compeed’ plasters but even then my corns and blisters hurt a lot.” Highly trained staff at Foot Solutions are used to dealing with all kinds of foot health problems, and following a thorough assessment it became clear to them that Erica would benefit from some good quality shoes and custom orthotics. Because of the amount of walking she does, Erica bought three pairs of shoes - one for walking the coast path, one for everyday use and a pair of Summer shoes. “They provided some insoles in the shop while my proper ones were being made. I walked up to the railway station and thought I’d end up doing somersaults and backflips it was so good,” she said. “Those people know their stuff, they’re not sales people,” she added.

34 Royal Parade, Plymouth PL1 1DU

t: 01752 222660 www.footsolutions.co.uk/plymouth

Her custom orthotics made even more improvement. Erica’s hip had started to hurt, which she and her doctor had put down to her all-weather outdoor life on the farm. Now, she says, she is pain free there too. “I haven’t had a twinge since,” she said happily. Erica puts a high value on the health she now enjoys: “I would buy one pair for the price I paid for my three pairs of shoes, to be able to walk as I do now,” she said, “it’s been life changing.”

Exhibition at Devon showcase work of ta

A group of ladies who meet together every week in Oreston to paint will be exhibiting their work in May. Known as The Breakaways Art group, the eight ladies will be showcasing a wide variety of artwork at Devonport Guildhall.

The name originated some years ago, when four or five people broke away from a tutor-led group, as they felt they had reached the stage when they needed to develop their own styles and originality, independently from the tutor. Now, in 2019, only one of those original members is still part of the group, but the name has stuck! Since those days, other ladies have joined, with the main aim of enjoying painting together. It is a very happy group, where each person does their own thing. Learners, improvers and experienced artists alike are encouraged to learn new styles and techniques and develop their painting skills in their own way. This makes for much variety in the work produced.

Cotehele’s inspiration for artists Cotehele House and Cotehele Mill have re-opened after the conservation team worked on cleaning, waxing, oiling and polishing in preparation for visitors. This year sees a new exhibition open in the Breakfast Room of the house. Words and Pictures looks at some of the many writers and artists who’ve made depictions of Cotehele over the years. It features the 19th century landscape painter Nicholas Condy, print-artist Rena Gardiner, the Cornish painter Mary Martin and Queen Charlotte, to name but a few. “It’s astounding how many people have been inspired to creativity through their experiences of Cotehele,” said Nick Stokes, house and collections manager for the National Trust. “This exhibition gives insight into their lives and how Cotehele influenced their work.” Cotehele continues to inspire artists and writers today. Drawn to the Valley, an artists’ collective based in the Tamar Valley, visit regularly to sketch and paint in the garden and a recent collaboration with Falmouth University has resulted in Cotehele Connections, a five-piece fiction anthology written by students in the third year of their English and Writing course. The anthology is available free of charge as an audio CD from the Brewery Bookshop in Cotehele’s Retainers Court. The exhibition is open seven days a week in Cotehele House, from 11am-4pm. The Mill is also open daily, 11am4.30pm with milling demonstrations on Thursdays and Sundays. Cotehele’s shop, gallery, Barn Restaurant, Edgcumbe tea-room, garden and estate are open now.

Mar 29 - May 22 EXHIBITION: THE UNKNOWN KNOWNS The Levinsky Gallery, Roland Levinsky Building, University of Plymouth In a world where data is as valuable as land, how vigilantly are we protecting our most prized assets, and how much of ourselves is available on the open market? By sharing our personal preferences, thumbprints and 3D face scans, how easily can we be tracked and influenced and who is watching on the other side of the tele screen? In ‘The Unknown Knowns’, Plymouth based curator Vickie Fear brings together artists using appropriated material to expose hidden truths and ask questions about the world we live in, making connections between artists who draw from a range of sources, including public archives and popular culture. Contained in these works are conversations about privacy, media influence, propaganda, colonialism and truth. Are we living in science fiction? What are we really scared of? And if the known unknowns are the things we know that we don’t know, what don’t we know that we know?

Subject matter, media and styles vary greatly, but the important thing is that each member enjoys what she is doing. Sometimes one member leads a workshop, where everyone paints a similar picture, which is usually in some way outside the members’ comfort zone, aiming to stretch the artists’ skills. The results are often surprising! The atmosphere amongst the Breakaways is friendly and encouraging. Often there are critiques at the end of a session, when all are encouraged to appraise and comment on each others’ work, and this is a very positive and helpful practice. The members also have good times socialising with one another, sometimes going out for a meal together or going on a trip to a gallery. Much laughter can be heard in every meeting, as well as a good dose of putting the world to rights! The Breakways was never intended to be an exclusively female preserve; in fact, one man was part of the group for several years. Men would be very much welcomed, but in recent years none have been brave enough! An exhibition of work by members of The Breakaways is taking place from May 2 to May 16 in the Cells of Devonport Guildhall. It will showcase a wide variety of artwork, including landscapes, flowers, nursery paintings, drawings, birds, dogs and a sprinkling of abstracts, in a variety of media including oils, pastels, acrylics, watercolour, inks and mixed media. One member of the Breakways will be present during opening hours on most days, and there may well be some painting going on!

CHARITY MATTERS St Luke’s nurse Gilly Barringer with Sean Mitchell support and enterprise manager at George House

St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth champions campaign to widen access to care One in four terminally ill people in the UK are known to be missing out on the end of life care they need, according to research by national charity Hospice UK. That’s why St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth has been joining its counterparts, backing this month’s national Open Up Hospice Care campaign to widen access to this vital support for people with life-limiting conditions. While Hospice UK’s nationwide campaign highlights the wide-ranging provision of hospices, including bespoke care for people who want to be looked after at home, St Luke’s is shining a light on the end of life care needs of one of the most vulnerable groups in society, homeless people. Along with those who live in remote areas where accessing all kinds of services can be more difficult, the homeless in our community are currently at greater risk of being overlooked when it comes to getting hospice care when they need it. So, in keeping with its ethos of looking after people ‘no matter where’, St Luke’s is spearheading open conversations about the challenges of ensuring its help reaches all who need it, so that nobody has to die alone, in pain or in distress. George Lillie, Clinical Director and Deputy Chief Executive at the charity, said: “St Luke’s is a hospice without walls, and many of those for whom we provide care want to receive it in the place they call home, whether this is a ‘traditional’ setting, or whether they live in a remote area, a care home, a hostel, or even in prison. Terminal illness does not discriminate and neither does hospice care, so it’s important we work closely with the communities we serve to address the challenges so that no-one is left behind.” While people living on the streets or in hostels often have shorter life expectancy, St Luke’s deputy those with terminal illness may not be known CEO George Lillie to a GP or other health professionals, so St www.cornerstonevision.com

Luke’s is pioneering work with fellow health and social care providers that can help ensure they are not forgotten at such times. Specialist Nurse Gilly Barringer said: “No-one who needs our care is ever turned away, so we’ve been working closely with the charity Shekinah and George House Hostel to gain better understanding of the challenges faced by them and those they support.” At George House Hostel, which provides 48 of the city’s 250 beds for homeless people, Gilly comes alongside residents identified as in need of St Luke’s compassionate care. She said: “Working with hostel staff enables me to build a relationship with the terminally ill person, even if I have to be opportunistic in my approach because often they move from place to place. “We discuss their care and where they want to be looked after, which for some is within the hostel because that’s what they regard as home. It’s so important to have these conversations particularly because sometimes, due to drug or alcohol abuse, their care needs can be more complex and deterioration more rapid. “Working with the person, their GP and hostel staff means together we can put a tailored plan in place to help ensure they’re where they want to be, receiving the highquality care at end of life.” Sean Mitchell, Manager at George House Hostel, said: “With the support St Luke’s provides, we are better equipped to help terminally ill residents realise their wish of ending their days in a more positive way here, with people they know around them, rather than dying alone in hospital or on the streets.” Find out more about St Luke’s work in opening up hospice care to everyone who needs it – and how you can help - at www. stlukes-hospice.org.uk/openup. When Plymouth solicitors Kitsons opened its office in the city in 2008, the firm had a team of seven people in the office who worked exclusively in commercial property. Eleven years on, they’ve moved to bigger offices at Langage, have tripled the workforce and now offer legal expertise across five specialisms. And, as part of the continuing growth, the firm is choosing to train and develop local young people. It’s a conscious decision by the senior partners to build a new generation of bright young lawyers at the company, which was founded in Torquay by philanthropist William Kitson in 1826. It still has an office on the English Riviera and another in Exeter. Over a third of the Plymouth team have been or are currently undergoing legal training at Kitsons – and they’re all young people from the Plymouth and Ivybridge areas. Joint Managing Partner, Rhodri Davey, explained: “It’s important for us as a firm that we grow with people who have a real connection with the community, who understand Plymouth and the surrounding area, and who know what makes it tick. “In 2026, Kitsons will be 200 years old. It’s an established and trusted brand with a strong reputation. And that’s down to having experience – and down to getting in the right people to train and develop,” he added. “We want to be the law firm of choice not just for our clients, but for our people, too. Because if people want to work for us and enjoy working for us, they’ll want to do the very best job for our clients.” Kitsons has a big involvement in the Plymouth community, with connections to charities, business groups and education establishments. Marjorie Creek, who leads the private client service and becomes a Partner in the firm in May, recently became a member of the Law School Advisory Board at the University of Plymouth. She said: “Twenty years ago, if you wanted to work in a client-facing law job, you’d need to go to Law School. Today, the routes into the profession are more diverse, which is great for widening up opportunities, and for social mobility.

From L to R: Marjorie Creek, Rhodri Davey and Matthew Bryant

“It’s helping us to develop exciting talent within the firm. For example, one of our trainees came straight to us from Stoke Damerel Community College as an apprentice and is now training to be a legal executive in our commercial property division.” It reflects the company’s ethos as a “dynamic” firm of solicitors that’s “a refreshing alternative to the typical law firm” – and it has created a perfect combination of youth and experience. Between them, the four partners at the Plymouth office have been in the business for several decades – experience and expertise that is behind them being listed in the Legal 500 and in Chambers and Partners. That means they are recognised as among the best and most trusted law firms in the country. Partner Matt Bryant explained: “We each focus on our own specialism, so our clients only ever speak to experts in that particular field. At the same time, if the advice crosses over into another area of specialism, we will involve a colleague from that department, too. It ensures that our clients always receive the most expert guidance.” This level of expertise is one of the reasons why Kitsons also rank highly when it comes to customer satisfaction. Another factor is the personal approach: “We get overwhelmingly positive feedback and that’s because we listen to our clients, we understand what they need, and we offer straightforward advice in plain English,” said Matt. The five specialist legal services offered to clients are residential conveyancing, commercial property, employment & human resources, family, and private client.

BEFORE

BUSINESS MATTERS

The firm advises people to always seek legal advice from qualified lawyers who are bound by strict regulations. Matt revealed: “We are regularly having to resolve difficulties and unpick problems for people. Sometimes it’s after they have sought assistance from unregulated advisers. But often, they’ve tried to do something themselves without any legal advice and got it wrong. This happens a lot in the areas of wills & probate and property. “These are important issues in people’s lives and it’s a very stressful time anyway. Taking bad advice or no advice makes things worse.” And Rhodri added: “The other advantage of coming to a firm like us is that the client is able to build a relationship based on trust and integrity with their solicitor. As a firm, we are guided by a Code of Conduct and as a profession, solicitors are heavily regulated – and rightly so. We have a duty of care and a duty of responsibility to always act in the best interest of the client.” And you don’t reach 193-years-old without doing just that! TRAVEL MATTERS Kelly with former England cricket captain Alastair Cook

We don’t like cricket …we love it! I’ve noticed a real trend for clients wanting to integrate their holiday arrangements with big sporting events around the world. Whether it’s the glamour of a World Cup or the thrill of a Grand Prix there’s no question this type of travel is on the up. The England cricket team recently toured the Caribbean the perfect opportunity By Travel Expert providing for an escape to the winter sunshine whilst taking in some match time. Here I look at two different perspectives of how this type of trip can work for the sports-mad and their partners who may not be quite so keen.

Anthony Goord

Mike & Mary’s Story

Our cricket loving friend and customer Mike Freeman travelled to Barbados with his sun worshipping partner Mary this January. Mike explains that since his retirement in 2015 he has taken his inspiration to travel far and wide centred around the England teams winter tours. He feels it’s the perfect way to escape the British weather and feed his passion for sport. Jokingly he muses that he has enjoyed, while Mary has endured wonderful holidays in South Africa, India and Australia. In fact, Mike has seen the Three Lions lose and play badly more often than he cares to remember, but for him

42\

The Plymouth Magazine April 2019

Mike and Mary

enjoying the company of like-minded Brits outweighs any disappointment in the result. Mike said: “Where else could I sit under a clear blue sky, rum punch in hand, with the glistening Caribbean Sea to my left and a lush green Cricket pitch before me? It almost seemed unimportant that the players struggled to an embarrassing 77-all out and from Mary’s point of view that meant more pool and sunbathing time together.” Mike and Mary stayed at the Club Barbados Resort & Spa which they found to be a friendly and good value all-inclusive option. Although the lack of a beach directly beside the hotel was a little disappointing, it proved to be an ideal base from which to explore the island and take in some local culture. Unperturbed by a little time on his hands Mike took the opportunity to seek out another of his sporting passions, horse racing. Offering Mary ‘a wee look around the Island sightseeing’ he carefully engineered a visit to the only racetrck in Barbados. Arriving at the grandly named The Garrison just in time for the first race, Mike found a few winners and reflects fondly on this bonus day out. “Without the motivation of the England tour I may never have experienced this quirky once in a lifetime race day,” he said. Mike is already planning his next trip and with tours of New Zealand and South Africa on the horizon who knows where his love of sport will take him next? When it comes to cricket….. he loves it!

James and Kelly’s Story

Time, I think to flip the coin and see things from the perspective of the non-sport loving

partner. Step forward our very own Kelly who has just returned from St Lucia where apart from the fact that England won (sorry Mike) she enjoyed a very different Caribbean holiday. Kelly’s partner James is a fully paid-up member of the Barmy Army, the self-chosen name for the England cricket team’s loyal travelling fans. He takes every opportunity to follow them and Kelly is only too pleased to tag along. Kelly said: “I get to visit some great places around world, but it’s definitely not all about the cricket for me. One of the things we give a lot of thought to before any trip is the type of accommodation we’ll be staying in. If James is going to be away at a cricket match all day, I want to be sure there’s lots for me to do too.” Kelly and James have made many close friends over the years who share their enjoyment of the whole touring scene and on this occasion, they opted to spend one week sharing a villa and the other at an all-inclusive hotel. Kelly reflects fondly on the two very different experiences. “I loved the villa week, it really gave us a chance to explore the more traditional bars and restaurants. It’s important to choose your location wisely mind you, although the local buses and taxis are good, it’s nice to be able to walk to things. “Travelling in our own little group meant we could arrange days out all together and a particular highlight was chartering a catamaran for the day to explore St Lucia’s stunning coastline and beautiful coves. Escaping for a bit of time on our own we hired a car and driver to visit the spectacular pitons and a couple of cocktails at the famous Hotel Chocolat along the way. “Our hotel stay was a chance to relax a bit more and you certainly value being pampered a little. After all this is supposed to be a holiday,” said Kelly One look at Kelly’s holiday snaps tells me that she is perhaps not quite the cricket-widow we have been led to believe. There seem to be many more pictures of her in the arms of England cricketers than there are of her lovingly looking into the eyes of her boyfriend James!

TRAVEL MATTERS James and Kelly

Kelly explained: “Well, I do attend a couple of days’ cricket and I really enjoy the feeling of being part of the whole buzz that surrounds the team. It’s so friendly and although I admit I would probably never watch a game on the television there’s something really special about just being there. I think until you have experienced the comradery it’s hard to imagine what wonderful balance this type of holiday can give you. When it comes to cricket….she loves holidays! If these traveller’s tales have whetted your appetite to combine your dream holiday with a major sporting event give us a call on 01752 364186. Happy Holidays!

GARDENING MATTERS By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre Now that Spring is officially here, it’s time to get out into the garden and start sprucing up the beds, borders and hanging baskets. Now is a great time to plant, as the threat of frost has passed. Get those young tender plants planted and give them a good solid start to the season and a long growing time. It’s also time to start planting productive plants like fruit and vegetables. Growing your own fruit and veg is so rewarding, relatively easy and the crops taste far superior than anything bought at the supermarket. Preparation is the key to success with growing. What you put into the soil directly affects the results you get back. Start by digging over the soil in your beds to break it up and incorporate plenty of fresh, organic matter, such as compost or composted farm yard manure. Dig in a balanced fertiliser to enrich the soil such as Fish, Blood and Bone, Growmore or Chicken Manure Pellets. If you are growing in containers, empty out the old compost and add fresh. Preparing the ground or container is the first and most important step to ensuring success and a bumper crop. Having healthy, fertile soil is the best start your plants can get. It’s the key to strong, healthy and tasty plants: do that part right and all you’ll have to do throughout the growing season is keep your plants well-watered and given the occasional feed. The next job will be choosing what to grow. This can seem overwhelming as there are so many different varieties of each type of fruit and vegetable and so many to choose from. The best advice I can offer those starting from scratch is simply only grow what you’ll eat. There’s no point in growing every type of vegetable there is to grow if you don’t like them. They’ll only go to waste and they will be taking up valuable space that could have otherwise been used to grow something you do like. Another piece of advice I’ll offer is avoid growing things that take up a lot of space for a long time which then produce very little yield, such as main crop potatoes, parsnips and Brussel sprouts, unless of course you do have the space they need and can let them have it. Early season potatoes are far easier to grow and will crop a lot sooner and be ready before the threat of blight appears. If you only have a small patch or a few pots and want maximum yield from your crops then I’d recommend cut and come again crops. Plants such as runner beans, French beans, peas and broad beans can be picked on a weekly basis and still continue to produce more. Cut and come again lettuce, perpetual spinach, rocket, chard and kale are

Plant of the month The Senetti is my choice for plant of the month, these dazzling daisies are smothered in blooms from early March until late July. They are available in vibrant shades of pink, purple, blue and bi-colours. They are perfect for growing in pots as well as in the garden. The bright colour really adds the wow factor so early on in the season. The colour is almost luminescent and the sheer volume of blooms they produce makes them excellent value for money. They like a position in full sun in welldrained soil and grow to a height and spread of 45cm (18ins).

The Plymouth Magazine April 2019

There’s p you grow fantastic leafy greens for repeat harvesting. With tomatoes, cucumber, courgettes, chillies and peppers, the more you pick, the more they crop. Other space saving ideas for growing fruits and vegetables include companion planting. Tomatoes have been traditionally grown in grow bags for years and this has always proved to be pretty reliable - but they can also be grown up bamboo canes in large pots. Either way is productive, but don’t let the soil at the feet of the tomato plants go to waste, plant that space up with strawberries. They enjoy the same growing conditions and feeding regime as tomatoes, or alternatively, what goes great with tomatoes? Basil! Grow basil at the feet of your tomatoes and pick together at the same time for a tasty treat. You can also grow strawberries at the base of fruit bushes to maximise your growing space. Window boxes are great for growing salads in, a 60cm (2ft) window box is perfect to grow an entire salad in with cut and come again lettuce, spring onions, ‘Tumbling Tom’ tomato and radish. This is a quick and easy project that can be cropped from a few weeks and kept going throughout summer. Once the radishes and spring onions have been cropped, they can be sown again. Hanging baskets are actually surprisingly effective for growing certain crops. Herbs will grow very well in a basket, and bush and trailing tomatoes such as ‘Tumbling Tom’ and ‘Totem’ both do very well in a basket. Strawberries are great in baskets, and are high enough off the ground that slugs and snails can’t eat the fruit, and for the same reason, lettuces perform excellently in hanging baskets because they are out of the reach of slugs and snails. Dwarf chillies, such as the bird’s eye types also do really well in hanging baskets, just make sure you feed them and water them regularly. Fruit bushes grown in pots can be very successful, especially those that require different soil types which your garden may not have such as blueberries and cranberries. They both require damp, ericaceous soil, which is easily

pots of fun when w fruit and veg! Try growing your own potatoes in a bag Everyone can grow potatoes, even in just a potato bag! It’s just like imagining a large club sandwich - only with compost and potatoes! What you will need: Seed potatoes. Choose a variety you will use and cook with. International Kidney is a good all-rounder and reliable variety. It is the variety famously grown in Jersey’s warm and rich soil. A potato growing bag - which is re-usable again and again! Good quality compost. I recommend using Westland’s Multipurpose compost with added John Innes, or Jacks Magic. Some fertiliser. Westland’s Chicken Manure pellets will be suitable. What to do: • Lay your seed potatoes on a sunny window ledge for a week or two to develop small shoots. This is called chitting and allows you to see which way up to plant your potatoes

and allows them to grow faster. • Open the potato growing bag and fill 1/3 of it with the compost. • Place 4 or 5 of the seed potatoes on top of the compost with the shots pointing up. • Scatter a handful of the chicken manure pellets around the potatoes. • Cover the seed potatoes with 10cm (4ins) of compost. • Repeat steps 2,3 and 4 again. • Fill the growing bag to the top with the compost, leaving room to allow for watering. Firm the compost with your hands. • Water the bag and keep it moist, but not water logged throughout the growing season. • Place the bag in a sunny position and enjoy your very own home grown potatoes from around June.

PRIDE & JOY The Home and Garden Maintenance Team

Our services include: • hedge & shrub maintenance • weeding • • tree work • lawn care & grass cutting • • creation of flower & veggie beds • • trellis work • shed & greenhouse work • • general garden tidying • pond care • • fencing & gates • patios & decking • achievable in a pot. They also need a position in dappled shade, so they can be moved around in their pots until the perfect spot is found. Thanks to new breeding, dwarf varieties of raspberry and blackberry are now available and both are perfect for pot growing and for small areas. They are thornless and only grow to a height and spread of 90cm (3ft). Larger growing trees such as apples, pears, cherries and plums can be grown in pots if they have been grafted onto dwarfing or semi-dwarfing root stocks. These will only grow to modest sizes, between 1.8-2.4m (68ft) and are perfect for small gardens. If space is really tight and you still want to grow fruit trees, then espaliered fruit trees could be the solution. These are fruit trees on dwarf root stocks trained to be grown flat against a wall. They take up minimal space, can be grown very happily in a pot and are surprisingly productive. www.cornerstonevision.com
