Plymouth’s growing food and drink scene means the city is rapidly becoming a haven for foodies, with new restaurants popping up and adding to the existing array of amazing places to eat and drink. Recent arrivals to the city centre include Bill’s on the first floor of Drake Circus, open until 10pm; and Turtle Bay, treating diners to delicious Caribbean food and cocktails. The Copthorne Hotel has also recently opened their new brasserie and bar, 50 Degrees North. Serving up creative dishes made with fresh local produce in a relaxed atmosphere, it’s the perfect spot for a catch up with friends. Royal William Yard is another hotspot for restaurants, including Bistrot Pierre, Las Iguanas, Prezzo, Wagamama and Wildwood. The Yard even hosts a monthly Good Food market on the first Sunday of every month, showcasing the best in local produce. Don’t forget the West End, where you’ll find a variety of independent cafes and restaurants and Plymouth Market, open during the day, with streetfood stalls serving up freshly-cooked treats.

WhatsOnPlymouth

Plymouth is also lucky to have welcomed a number of celebrity chefs to open their doors, with the Tanner brothers’ Barbican Kitchen restaurant celebrating its 12th birthday this year. For fresh seafood, there’s Mitch Tonks’ Rockfish restaurant in Sutton Harbour and for delicious steak with a view, Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse Bar and Grill is situated at the top of the Crowne Plaza with dazzling waterfront views of Plymouth Sound. Photo: Rockfish For a different view of Plymouth’s picturesque waterfront try out The Bridge at Mount Batten, Jolly Jacks at Mayflower Marina, or Chandlers at Queen Anne’s Battery Marina, all of which offer a great menu and relaxed bar in a superb setting. If you want to treat yourself to a finedining experience then visit one of the city’s award-winning restaurants - Rock Salt Café & Brasserie and The Greedy Goose both boast two AA Rosettes. Or try something new at sushi bar and robata, Kuku, where you can enjoy contemporary Japanese cuisine. Whatever cuisine you’re looking for, you’ll find it on Plymouth’s buzzing food scene. Spend a day

exploring…

If you’re looking for a family day out this summer, there’s lots of fun to be had on your doorstep in Plymouth. It can be easy to forget that we’re lucky enough to share our city with the UK’s largest public aquarium. All indoors, making it perfect for a rainy day, the National Marine Aquarium is home to over 4,000 animals, including sharks, stingrays, an octopus and Friday, the Green Turtle! It’s definitely worth a visit – and don’t forget to validate your entry ticket to receive free re-entry for an entire year. The aquarium also runs lots of extra activities during school holidays, including boat trips and special ‘Sleeping with the Sharks’ overnight sessions. If the sun is shining, then why not discover some of Plymouth’s lesser known spots too? Nestled away on the Barbican you’ll find the Elizabethan Gardens, a quiet oasis during the summer where you can sit and enjoy the sunshine, then walk in the footsteps of pioneers including Darwin and Drake as you explore the greatest concentration of cobbled streets in the UK. More than a third of the city is covered in green space so head to one of the many parks and nature reserves for picnics, dog walks or bike-riding. Plymouth’s rich history also means there’s always something new to learn, with Mayflower 400 celebrations

20 \

The Plymouth Magazine Summer Guide 2018

coming up in 2020, marking 400 years since the Pilgrims set sail for America. Head to the Mayflower Museum to find out more about their journey and why it’s important to our city. Located above the Tourist information Centre on the Barbican, it’s a great way to while away an hour. The third floor balcony boasts panoramic views of the harbour too – you can even see to Dartmoor on a clear day – so it’s a great place to get some Instagram-worthy pictures. Whatever the weather, there’s fun to be had in Plymouth. Check out visitplymouth.co.uk to find plenty of inspiration for summer adventures.

Walks and waterlinks As Britain’s Ocean City, Plymouth boasts incredible sea views, so when the sun is shining this summer don’t miss out on the chance to enjoy our waterfront by land or water. Plymouth nestles alongside the Sound, a highly preserved European Marine Site fed by two estuaries. The marine environment plays an important role offering a haven for wildlife and the city is a busy port for ships, cruise liners and visiting yachts. The dazzling views are memorable at any time of year and there’s nothing quite like sitting with a drink at the water’s edge with a ship sailing past just metres away. Plymouth Waterlinks connect all of the city’s waterfront destinations, making it easy to explore– and going by boat makes the travelling part of the fun. Waterlinks ferry services connect the Barbican and Sutton Harbour with Royal William Yard, Mount Batten and Cornwall. There’s lots to explore at each destination, with cafes, bars and shops just waiting to be discovered. If you’re in an active mood then the Mount Batten Activity and Watersports Centre offers the chance to try lots of different

watersports, including kayaking, sailing and windsurfing, or try out stand-up paddle boarding at Royal William Yard. The waterfront is also the perfect spot for a leisurely walk on a summer day, with lots of different routes across the city to choose from. There are nine miles of scenic South West Coast Path which wind across Plymouth, from Stonehouse to Jennycliff in Plymstock. Plymouth’s Waterfront Walkway follows this path, and offers a number of short walking routes that give you the opportunity to explore our city’s history and enjoy stunning views and fresh sea air. If you’d rather just kick back and relax, Plymouth Boat Trips offer a number of harbour and river cruises, so hop on board to enjoy a trip around the Dockyard or up the Tamar. Alternatively, you could use the Waterlinks to travel further afield into Cornwall, with ferry services stopping at the Mount Edgcumbe estate and the pretty beach and village of Cawsand. For more information about Plymouth’s Waterlinks and walking routes, head to: visitplymouth.co.uk or pop into the Tourist Information Centre on the Barbican.
