St Budeaux resident gets support for home warming

A St Budeaux resident has had gas central heating installed in his home for free thanks to the council’s Warm Homes Fund.

Stanley Terry, who is 91 this year, heard about the scheme after receiving a home visit from a Plymouth Energy Community Advisor.

Working with delivery partner Eon, the Council’s Low Carbon Team were able to install a boiler and radiators into Mr Terry’s home for free – ensuring the whole property was warm and much more affordable to heat.

The Warm Homes Fund, provided

by National Grid and administered by Affordable Warmth Solutions, aims to install 200 first time central heating systems in owner occupied and private rented properties who are struggling with fuel poverty.

Mr Terry said: “I survived on one fan heater for years, moving it around as I moved rooms.

“It’s wonderful – I wake up in the morning and it’s warm.”

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet member for Environment and Street Scene said: “Fuel poverty can be a vicious cycle, people often have to spend more money than average keeping warm, leaving less for other essential costs.

“Residents like Mr Terry are exactly who this fund is for. We pledged to fight fuel poverty in Plymouth and I am delighted to see this promise in action.”

Jeremy Nesbitt, Managing Director of Affordable Warmth Solutions, said: “We are excited about this investment from National Grid and are delighted to support the Council in making a difference to the residents of Plymouth.

“Solving the issues associated with Fuel Poverty continues to challenge many of our stakeholders and the feedback we’ve already received provides evidence of how the Warm Homes Fund will make a positive difference to thousands of homes throughout Great Britain.”

The scheme is open to private households who currently do not have central heating and are struggling to pay their energy bills.

Actress who inspired Plymouth’s ‘Messenger’ performs official unveiling

The actress who inspired the UK’s largest bronze sculpture has officially unveiled her to the public in Plymouth.

Nicola Kavanagh, who performed the pose that created ‘Messenger’, said she felt great ‘pride and honour’ to be immortalised in bronze on a giant scale.

The sculpture, measuring seven metres tall, nine metres wide and weighing in at 10 tonnes, had a theatrical entrance to the city, towed in by barge across Plymouth Sound and attracting national media attention.

Speaking at last night’s unveiling, Nicola recalled the exact moment she performed the pose whilst rehearsing for Frantic Assembly’s adaptation of Othello – a coproduction with the Theatre Royal Plymouth in 2008.

She said: “At that specific point we were all in a fight scene so my character was jumping off a wall and waiting for a moment to see

what danger was around her. The whole thing about it was not about where she is going but where she could be going.”

Asked how she felt about being immortalised in Messenger’s giant sculpture, Nicola said: “It feels surreal, I feel pride and honoured, it’s incredible really.”

Among those invited to the official unveiling was Council leader Tudor Evans who praised the team at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. He added: “It’s had 39 million hits online and counting and we are only really starting the journey. It goes to show that if we are bold and brave and got a vision and prepared to argue for it, great things can happen.

“This project is going to make Plymouth really famous, it is famous already, but it will be famous for public art now and we never thought that would happen.”

Richard Stevens, Chair of Devon Chamber of Commerce, said: “I think she is absolutely

fantastic. This is a symbolic prize for the city.

I think that creativity and the arts are going to be the glue that helps us raise aspiration.

It does not matter what you think of it, what is refreshing is that it has got people talking about the city. For me, it is people’s open mouths as they see her for the first time – that is priceless.”

Plymouth MP Luke Pollard said: “Art is supposed to provoke, the really exciting thing is we have an incredible statue of a woman in our city. There are far too many statues of men on giant plinths; we need to have more statues of women. “ Adrian Vinken OBE, Chief Executive of Theatre Royal Plymouth, said: “I am delighted with how she arrived in the city and overwhelmed by the positive public reaction.

“I now look forward to the contribution she makes to the city for years to come.”

Development site tidied up by city council The Stonemasons Arms in Albert Road, Stoke is looking much better after the owners complied with an untidy land notice.

However, there are five sites across the city that will now face further legal action after failing to clean up.

The sites have been left in a poor condition after buildings have been demolished and in some cases piles of rubble remain on the sites, which has attracted further fly tipping.

Improvement notices were issued which required the landowners to tidy up the sites and securely fence them off by the middle of February.

Keyham community group's Easter egg hunt special

Plans in to convert Royal Fleet Club into Scientology centre

Plans for the conversion of the Royal Fleet Club in Devonport into a place of worship and religious instruction have been submitted to Plymouth City Council.

The planning application has been made on behalf of the Church of Scientology Religious Education College Inc by its agents Paul Butler Associates.

The landmark building was built in 1900 and was originally designed as a listed sailors' home.

It was subsequently converted into a 55-bedroom hotel, but closed in 2002. It was purchased by the Church of Scientology in 2010 for £1 million.

Planning permission is being sought for the comprehensive repair, refurbishment and change of use of the Royal Fleet Club to enable its conversion to a place of worship and theological education with ancillary communal and administrative uses. Associated external alterations, landscaping works and various signage is also proposed.

Internally, the building will be converted to provide a 96-seater chapel located in the basement, and a range of lecture theatres, seminar facilities, conference and meeting rooms.

There will also be a public information room and public film room, café, childcare and crèche facilities along with offices and archive.

Once complete, the building will provide a number of spaces and facilities, some of which will be open to the public with the remainder dedicated for the use of those practicing Scientology.

The proposal requires significant changes to the building's layout. Most of the walls to the hotel bedrooms and their ensuite bathrooms have been removed to create fewer, generally larger spaces.

The new layouts have been designed to integrate with the original fabric of the building.

Existing window and door locations are all utilised in the new design.

The new layout retains key aspects of the original design, such as the locations of the main entrance and reception, and maintains most key elements of the circulation such as stairs, the lift, and corridors.

The existing building’s rendered walls will be repaired and repainted, and all of the windows will be replaced with new timber windows with an aluminium external face. Existing railings and gates will be restored and repainted.

The proposed chapel will accommodate Scientology congregational gatherings that include services, weddings and naming ceremonies.

An initial pre-application enquiry was submitted to the city council in October 2018 which involved site meetings with the project team and city planners. Planners raised no principle objections to the planning proposal.

Consultation with local residents took place in January with 120 consultation letters distributed providing a description of the application site and the proposed development.

The purpose of the consultation was to explain the initial proposals and invite feedback.

Devonport ward councillors have been invited to discuss the proposals.

Deadline for comments on the proposal is April 2. The application reference is 19/00271/ FUL and comments can be made by e-mail to planningconsets@plymouth.gov.uk.

The raffle will, of course, include a delicious Victoria sponge birthday cake.

Right Royal occasion celebrated in Victoria Park A much-loved oasis in Millbridge is celebrating the birth of its namesake on May 25. The Victoria Park Community Project is hosting a special ‘Victoria Day’ on the Saturday after the queen was born 200 years ago on May 24 1819.

A new community group has recently been launched with the aim of 'making Keyham a better place.'

The newly-formed Keyham Neighbourhood Watch received lots of help and advice on starting from the St Levan's Neighbourhood Watch scheme which has run in the area for many years.

Keyham Neighbourhood Watch is now responsible for the adjacent area to St Levan’s, running from Saltash Road to Wolseley Road, and taking in a substantial area around Ford and Keyham.

The Keyham group only started four months ago and already have lots of ideas and initiatives in hand. They have run several litter picks with the help of El Clarke and her group, Clean Our Patch. They have also looked at Alexandra Park and cleaned the steps.

With support from the Royal Navy, they are in the process of getting a new zebra crossing set up outside HMS Drake, which will make it a lot safer on Saltash Road for pedestrians and motorists alike.

This Easter the group is running an Easter Egg Hunt for all ages in the area, to acknowledge and support the many local businesses tucked away in Keyham.

Forms to enter the hunt are available from the St Johnston’s Social Club, 154 Saltash Road and cost just £1. Contestants then have up to two weeks to follow the clues and find the 19 different businesses in the area that have posters displayed in the windows.

The first letters of the names of the animals in the posters form a word, which once identified will receive a prize back at the Social Club.

It’s a great low cost activity to get little ones and older ones involved in during the Easter holidays, without having to bus into town.

The Keyham Neighbourhood Watch meets every month, and is open to anyone with an interest in getting involved. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month, with the next one on April 17 at 7pm in the St Johnston Social Club, Saltash Road. Ford Park Cemetery’s exhibition ‘Accidental Deaths’ continues in the Visitor Centre throughout April.

The second phase of Oceansgate has now been given the green light, having secured funding and planning permission.

Based in Devonport’s South Yard, Oceansgate is transforming disused Ministry of Defence land into an Enterprise Zone for marine businesses, with opportunities for research, innovation and production. Phase 1 of the development was completed last year.

A total of £10.25 million of funding has been secured for Phase 2, with a £2.25 million grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and an £8 million Council loan.

Planning permission has also been granted for the next phase, which includes the demolition of an existing building and the erection of four new buildings. This will provide 15 light industrial units and a new

three storey office building, as well as car parking and landscaping.

This will create a total of 1,350 square metres of light industrial space and 1,500 square metres of office space, enabling the creation of up to 130 new jobs.

As part of the creation of Phase 2 the historic gateway arch to South Yard, which was once the original entrance to Devonport dockyard, will be rebuilt to create a sense of arrival to the site.

Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “I’m really excited that we’re able to move forward with the next phase of Oceansgate. The planned work will create a modern workspace perfect for marine businesses, but keep a nod to the past with the recreation of the original gateway.

“Phase 1 has already become a thriving

business hub, which is what we set out to achieve. This next step will provide even more opportunities for businesses and more jobs, helping to drive economic growth and support our flourishing marine industry in Britain’s Ocean City.”

The new buildings will be in keeping with the office and industrial units created in Phase 1 and the wider historic setting of South Yard, using natural materials such as Plymouth limestone and granite.

Phase 1 of Oceansgate has already welcomed a number of businesses including Lang & Potter, Surejust, Trend Marine, the Maritime & Coastguard agency and the new Marine Business Technology Centre.

Recognition for tennis coaches Fiona and James Two Plymouth-based rising stars in the world of inclusive tennis have been rewarded for their hard work.

Fiona Murphy, of Double Bounce, was awarded the Disability Award for her dedication to inclusive tennis in the South West at the Devon Tennis County Awards.

Her huge efforts and commitment over the past year or so have opened up tennis to a whole range of people who may never have considered the game previously.

Fiona was delighted to receive the award and said: “It is wonderful to be recognised for getting more disabled and older people to play tennis. I just adapt the game to suit the players, often using sponge balls and short rackets and playing inside in a small area”.

James Jennings was also successful at the Devon Tennis awards. He narrowly missed out on winning Young Coach of the Year, but was then rewarded for his hard work with a special Chairman’s Award. These awards are only handed out to particularly deserving individuals and this year, one of those was James.

James has grown up playing tennis

and represents the South West at Special Olympic tournaments at both a regional and national level. It was because of his inspirational coach that he decided to become a tennis coach himself in spite of the challenges of being autistic.

He gained qualifications in sport at City College Plymouth where he also got the opportunity to gain the LTA Level 1 tennis coaching qualification before accepting a year long Royal Foundation Coach Core apprenticeship at Ivybridge Tennis Club where he still volunteers whilst preparing to take the LTA Level 2 qualification in April.

He has a great manner on court and is always enthusiastic and professional.

He is fantastic with the younger players and is always willing to learn from more experienced coaches. He is definitely an upand-coming coach of the future and will be a great asset to the county!

James assists Fiona with disability tennis sessions including wheelchair tennis at Ivybridge and learning disability tennis at Whiteford Road Tennis Club, which is for players from the DOVE Project.

Plymouth City Council is part-funding an enterprise coaching programme which aims to help people develop self-employment opportunities as well as start and sustain micro and small businesses, including conversations around alternative business structures such as cooperatives and social enterprises.

The city is teaming up with Outset to offer support to people from the more deprived and disadvantaged areas of Devon, such as Plymouth, Torbay and Torridge, and those underrepresented in enterprise.

Inclusive growth is at the heart of the Outset ethos. Now in its 10th year, Outset have supported over 6,000 businesses across the South West, creating over 6,859 jobs. The service has helped over 23,000 individuals become entrepreneurs in the region, through free programmes of enterprise workshops and 1:1 advice.

Plymouth’s contribution with match funding will be £362,000 to run the programme in the city with the emphasis on working with a diverse community, helping individuals from all backgrounds in areas such as Whitleigh, Honicknowle, Ernesettle and Ham and North Prospect where there are traditionally fewer start-ups.

The overall Outset Enterprise Coaching programme is worth over £1,702,020 across Devon. The European Development Fund is contributing £1,020,612.

Part of the package includes enterprise coaching to support people with practical advice on how to write a business plan, pitching and presenting ideas as well as finance and marketing advice.

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Housing and Cooperative Development said: “This project aims to give support and confidence for people who might have a great idea but need more help to turn it into reality.

“Deciding to go into business is a huge decision for some people. Having someone to help you prepare and do the leg work beforehand goes a long way to making that big leap a success.”

As well as Plymouth supporting by way of in-kind salaries, the Council is contributing £75,000 Social Enterprise Investment Fund money to help individual entrepreneurs with small grants.

This programme follows in the footsteps of the Plymouth Urban Enterprise programme which began in 2011 and over five years engaged over 4,000 people, created 400 jobs, and offered £1.8 million loans to nearly 150 clients.

Appeal for volunteers to help tackle loneliness in Plymouth

Could you volunteer some of your time to help befriend an older person and support Plymouth’s pledge to tackle loneliness?

Plymouth City Council is working with local partners including charities and social care providers, taking a whole health and social care systems approach, to tackle the growing issue of loneliness, and more volunteers are being urged to come forward.

The Council’s pledge to tackle the issue is in response to the government’s strategy for tackling loneliness, published in October 2018, as a result of the Jo Cox Commission on

Gordon Murdoch, aged 91, joined the Merchant Navy aged 16 and was posted to New York ten days later. He originally met his wife Joyce, a Wren, aged 12 when they were both at school, and then met her again years later out in New York. He then stayed with her until she died four years ago aged 93.

After Joyce died, Gordon became lonely and was referred to The Elder Tree, and is now one of the 79 older people in Plymouth who receives regular visits from their Befriending service in their own home. The Elder Tree is a local service, commissioned by the Council, that supports 1200 older people in Plymouth, has 135 volunteers, and provides 78 activities in 49 locations across the city.

Gordon said: “I was happily married to Joyce for 68 years and travelled the world when I was in the Navy, living in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, before moving to London. After Joyce died I moved to Plymouth and was referred to the Elder Tree.

“I would definitely recommend the Befriending service to others, it has made a big difference to my life. Robbie Nairn from Elder Tree comes to see me regularly and because he is also ex-Navy we

have a lot in common – he is always at the end of the phone if I need him.”

Gordon’s Befriender is Robbie Nairn, who also happens to be the chief executive of the Elder Tree.

Robbie said: “All of us at some point experience loneliness and we all know someone who may be lonely – it could be your father or your grandfather, and not everyone has someone who can look after them.

“That’s why we’re launching this recruitment drive for 50 more volunteers to

join our Befriending service at the Elder Tree so we can help people like Gordon – please do visit our website to find out more about how you can help.”

Councillor Ian Tuffin, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care for Plymouth City Council, said: “We know that loneliness can have a negative impact on people’s health and wellbeing, but we can all do our bit to help. That’s why organisations such as the Elder Tree perform such a valuable service and we can see the difference they have made to the lives of people like Gordon.

“Tackling loneliness also forms an important part of our Wellbeing Hubs agenda, where we plan to have a number of hubs across the city offering services such as social prescribing and signposting to voluntary and community support groups.

“We have pledged to work with charities and social care providers using a whole health and social care systems approach to tackle loneliness and I would urge local people in Plymouth to find out about how they can volunteer for Elder Tree and other local organisations.”

Police appeal for witnesses after Efford robbery

Police are appealing for witnesses following a robbery in Plymouth.

The incident took place in Blandford Road, Efford at around 8pm on Sunday March 17.

The victim was assaulted and then robbed. The suspect stole a bracelet, and IPhone XS and the victim’s body-warmer jacket before fleeing the area.

The victim, a 19-year-old local man sustained cuts and bruises to his face.

The suspect is described as a white man approximately 6ft tall, wearing a cap, blue Nike jumper and possibly jeans.

Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with any information is asked to email 101@dc.police. uk quoting crime reference CR/024044/19.

City’s first Specialist Wellbeing Hub launched Partners in Plymouth have launched the city’s first Specialist Wellbeing Hub at the Cumberland Centre.

Although the new hub is the fourth wellbeing hub in the city, it will be the first of two specialist wellbeing hubs which will benefit from additional services over and above what is available in Plymouth’s existing hubs.

Services at the hub will be provided by Livewell Southwest and a range of local partners, while the hub is jointly commissioned by Plymouth City Council and Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (NEW Devon CCG). The hub was officially launched by Leader of Plymouth City Council Councillor Tudor Evans, Councillor Ian Tuffin, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, Dan O’Toole, Deputy Chief Executive of Livewell Southwest, and Dr Shelagh McCormick, GP Chair for Western and Plymouth locality of NEW Devon CCG. Leader of Plymouth City Council, Councillor Tudor Evans OBE, said: “I am delighted to be able to launch the city’s first ever Specialist Wellbeing Hub with our partners Livewell Southwest and NEW Devon CCG. “The Cumberland Centre already has some fantastic facilities and is the ideal location for this – so the new hub will provide a very welcome enhancement to the service offer there.”

Councillor Ian Tuffin, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care for Plymouth City Council, said: “The hubs are a key part of the city’s vision to integrate health and social care by taking a different approach.

The focus is on prevention of ill health, wellbeing and on ensuring services can be readily accessed in the place and community in which people live.”

Jan Potter, Head of Health Improvement at Livewell Southwest, said: “We are very excited to be launching the Cumberland Centre as the first specialist wellbeing hub with our partners. Livewell will continue to provide a wide range of clinical services at the centre, but its hub status means people will also be able to easily access support in other areas which affect health and wellbeing, like housing, money management, anxiety, stress, weight management, stopping smoking, healthy eating and One You Plymouth clinics.”

Dr Shelagh McCormick, Chair of the Western Locality of NEW Devon CCG said: “Helping people stay well and making sure health, social care and wellbeing services work together are key to the NHS Long Term Plan.

Excellent facilities like the Cumberland Centre will help realise those ambitions and bring real benefits for local people.”

Over the past year, other wellbeing hubs have been launched in the city at the Jan Cutting Centre (with the Wolseley Trust), Four Greens Wellbeing Hub (with Four Greens Community Trust) and Mannamead Wellbeing Hub (with Improving Lives Plymouth).

Tanya Seldon, who regularly uses the Four Greens Wellbeing Hub, said: “I think it’s great that more wellbeing hubs will be opening across Plymouth.

“When I moved to the area I didn’t really know anyone but going to Four Greens has really helped me and improved my mental health, people have been very supportive and I’ve made a lot of friends. I would definitely recommend the wellbeing hubs.”

As well as the standard wellbeing hub offer which includes linking people into voluntary and community sector activity to improve their wellbeing, befriending services, time bank volunteering opportunities and signposting to other local services, the Cumberland Specialist Wellbeing Hub will offer more specialist mental health support, help with managing long term conditions and support for carers.

The specialist wellbeing hub will also benefit from the wide range of services already on offer at the Cumberland Centre, including minor injury services, community therapy services and sexual health.

St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth champions campaign to widen access to care

One in four terminally ill people in the UK are known to be missing out on the end of life care they need, according to research by national charity Hospice UK.

That’s why St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth has been joining its counterparts, backing this month’s national Open Up Hospice Care campaign to widen access to this vital support for people with lifelimiting conditions.

While Hospice UK’s nationwide campaign highlights the wideranging provision of hospices, including bespoke care for people who want to be looked after at home, St Luke’s is shining a light on the end of life care needs of one of the most vulnerable groups in society, homeless people.

Along with those who live in remote areas where accessing all kinds of services can be more difficult, the homeless in our community are currently at greater risk of being overlooked when it comes to getting hospice care when they need it. So, in keeping with its ethos of looking after people ‘no matter where’, St Luke’s is spearheading open conversations about the challenges of ensuring its help reaches all who

need it, so that nobody has to die alone, in pain or in distress.

George Lillie, clinical director and deputy chief executive at the charity, said: “St Luke’s is a hospice without walls, and many of those for whom we provide care want to receive it in the place they call home, whether this is a ‘traditional’ setting, or whether they live in a remote area, a care home, a hostel, or even in prison. Terminal illness does not discriminate and neither does hospice care, so it’s important we work closely with the communities we serve to address the challenges so that no-one is left behind.”

While people living on the streets or in hostels often have shorter life expectancy, those with terminal illness may not be known to a GP or other health professionals, so St Luke’s is pioneering work with fellow health and social care providers that can help ensure they are not forgotten at such times.

Specialist nurse Gilly Barringer said: “No-one who needs our care is ever turned away, so we’ve been working closely with charity Shekinah and George House Hostel to gain better understanding of the challenges faced by them and those they support.”

of the city’s 250 beds for homeless people, Gilly comes alongside residents identified as in need of St Luke’s compassionate care.

She said: “Working with hostel staff enables me to build a relationship with the terminally ill person, even if I have to be opportunistic in my approach because often they move from place to place.

“We discuss their care and where they want to be looked after, which for some is within the hostel because that’s what they regard as home.

It’s so important to have these conversations particularly because sometimes, due to drug or alcohol abuse, their care needs can be more complex and deterioration more rapid.

“Working with the person, their GP and hostel staff means together we can put a tailored plan in place to help ensure they’re where they want to be, receiving the high-quality care at end of life.”

Sean Mitchell, manager at George House Hostel, said: “With the support St Luke’s provides, we are better equipped to help terminally ill residents realise their wish of ending their days in a more positive way here, with people they know around them, rather than dying alone in hospital or on the streets.”

City College appoints new chief

City College Plymouth has appointed a new principal and chief executive officer.

Jackie Grubb, who is currently principal at City of Westminster College, will take up the post in the summer.

The college’s Chair of Governors, Pauline Odulinski, said: “On behalf of the Board I am delighted to announce that, following the very robust recruitment process, we have appointed Jackie Grubb as the new principal and chief executive officer at City College Plymouth.

“She was overwhelmingly the recommendation of those involved in the recruitment process which included staff, students, managers and stakeholders.”

“The Governing Body was unanimous in its decision to appoint Ms Grubb and felt she had all the qualities, skills and experience needed to lead us in the next part of our journey to excellence.

The Board was particularly impressed with Ms Grubb’s excellent track record in leading and managing in both Good and Outstanding organisations.”

Jackie commented that she is looking forward to working at the college: “I am honoured to have been appointed principal and chief executive officer at City College Plymouth and am looking forward to working with such a dedicated team of staff, Governors and stakeholders, to ensure that all students continue to receive an outstanding experience and the college remains at the heart of the community.”

Jackie has a wealth of experience in further education having commenced her career as a lecturer more than 30 years ago. As well as being principal at City of Westminster College, she has been deputy principal at Basingstoke College of Technology, director of curriculum at Swindon College and an additional inspector for Ofsted.

Jackie will take up her post this summer and is keen to spend time at the college before she joins. She will be meeting with local stakeholders when she visits.

Lest We Forget roadshow reveals more First World War treasures

Hand-carved mementoes from prisoners of war and reminders of one of Britain’s infamous defeats in the First World War were all revealed at the final Lest We Forget roadshow.

Plymouth residents came out in force to share the memories of how their forebears had fought and died in the conflict, bringing tales and family heirlooms to be recorded for the next generation.

The final of four national roadshows was hosted at the University of Plymouth on Wednesday 6 March and gave people the chance to have their stories added to the growing Lest We Forget digital archive, a joint project between the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation and the University of Oxford.

Among the items brought in were a handcarved wooden photo frame that had been made for a British soldier by a German prisoner of war he had been guarding. Other visitors had chess sets made by relatives to keep themselves entertained in the trenches alongside letters, photographs and medals.

John Hockaday from Noss Mayo brought along his father’s badge, received in honour of his presence during the Siege of Kut. In 1916 the British-Indian garrison at Kut-al-Amara, in modern-day Iraq, surrendered following a brutal siege from the Ottoman Empire.

Of his dad, John said: “My father was there in the Siege of Kut but because it was considered a failure it never gets talked

about much. But they really went through a lot so we need to remember what happened.

I don't think their story has been told enough and, it being about my father, it's also a personal story to me.”

Alongside the badge, John was able to tell the Lest We Forget volunteers about his own experiences as a young child playing war songs on piano for his father and his surviving comrades, itself a personal reminder of the life after the war for that generation.

Celia Bean from Plymouth said: “I brought along letters from my grandfather's brother. He stayed on after the war and ended up on the airships project where he was later killed. These letters he left behind are a link to the past.

They're also a part of me and who I am. You get a feeling for who someone is when you have something like this and I wanted to share that.”

Max Dutton, assistant historian for CWGC, said: “It’s been fascinating hearing the public’s stories and memories and being able to take a permanent record of them to share with the next generation.

“The people of Plymouth brought along a wonderful variety of photos, medals, letters and some unique artefacts that help build on our understanding of what it was like for those whose lives were touched by the First World War. “The most rewarding part of the Lest We Forget project has been to see the enthusiasm the public has for keeping these stories alive and making sure that collectively we continue to remember the wartime generations.”

Ambitious plans to build nearly 27,000 homes and create more than 20,000 new jobs in Plymouth, South Hams and West Devon have been given the green light.

It’s taken three years to shape, publish and consult on, but the Plymouth and South West Devon Joint Local Plan has now been endorsed by independent Government Inspectors and approved by Plymouth City Council, West Devon Borough Council and South Hams District Council.

The ambitious plan for what Plymouth and South West Devon could be like in 2034 covering important issues like health, transport, homes, jobs and the economy, green spaces and infrastructure is now set to be formally adopted by the three councils later this week and early next week.

The plan area covers a population of 401,567 people who were all asked to contribute to its policies and development sites.

Councillor Graham Parker, from West Devon Borough Council, chair of the Steering Group for the Joint Local Plan, speaking on behalf of the Joint Member Steering Group who oversaw the plan’s preparations said: “We are really pleased that the strategy set out in the plan and the supporting policies which will guide development in the next 20 years have been supported by the Inspectors.

“When this plan is adopted it will be only the 13th Joint Local Plan in the country and one of a very few that have meet the housing and employment needs for their communities in full. All three authorities are now committed to working together to deliver what we have set out in this radical plan.”

Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Infrastructure at Plymouth City Council said: “The plan sets out an unashamedly ambitious agenda for what Plymouth and South West Devon could be like in 2034.

"The plan makes provision for 26,700 new homes, of which 6,600 will be affordable homes to rent and buy, with 86 per cent planned for brownfield sites in Plymouth. The plan also proposes 375,208 square metres of new employment floor space and along with other employment generating development will create around 20,400 jobs, with 71 per cent of the planned growth to be focussed on

the Plymouth Policy Area.”

Councillor Coker continued: “Young families will be interested in knowing what the future plans are for new schools and colleges, and how the city and surrounding area plans to build enough homes for people to live in as well as where play areas could be.

“Those passionate about the environment might be interested in the policies that protect important green spaces, parks and sports facilities and how we plan to cut carbon emissions.”

The plan gives clarity to investors about where new developments are supported, where infrastructure improvements are planned while companies looking to move to the area will have policies to support their expansion plans.

Shoppers can see how the city centre might develop or ideas to support more local shops in thriving towns and villages of South Hams and West Devon.

Neighbourhood Planning Forums will now have the strategic policy framework to take forward their own neighbourhood plans for their areas.

The Joint Local Plan in numbers: • It covers 2,126 sq.km, nearly 55 per cent in West Devon, over 40 per cent in South Hams and just four per cent in Plymouth.

• The plan area covers a population of 401,567 people.

• Plymouth has 70 per cent of the plan area’s population with 262,712 people • Plymouth’s economic output is £5.2 billion and 130,000 total jobs.

a wider network of towns, villages and hamlets provide homes for 138,855 people, 54,385 in West Devon and 84,470 in South Hams.

West Devon is one of the most sparsely populated council areas with a population density of 47people/km2 compared to 95/km2 in South Hams and 3,284/km2 in Plymouth.

Over the last 10 years, Plymouth has seen 9,632 homes delivered and 90 per cent were built on previouslybuilt land. Building is underway on a further 1,440 properties and 4,520 have permission to be built.

Since 2014, 5,826 homes have been delivered in the Joint Local Plan Area. At April 2018, there were 1,855 dwellings under construction across the three authorities and a further 13,397 with planning consent.

• An initial 600 sites were put forward through the Plymouth Plan. 168 sites are allocated in the plan for mixed use, housing, retail, employment, sports, strategic greenspaces or other uses.

• 117 sites are allocated for housing across the whole plan area.

• 20 sites are identified to include provision for new retail floorspace.

• There are 40 sites where new employment floorspace can be provided in Plymouth’s City Centre and in the Waterfront Growth Area there are allocations for 3,802 homes and 82,445 sq.m. of employment.

In the Derriford and Northern Corridor Growth Area there are allocations for 4,171 homes and 100,180 sq.m. of employment.

In the Eastern Corridor Growth Area there are allocations for 7,043 homes and 326,625 sq.m. of employment.

Overall, the plan makes provision for 26,700 new homes, of which 19,000 are within the Plymouth Policy Area and 7,700 in the Thriving Towns and Villages.

Plymouth’s residents are being encouraged to take part in the city’s biggest ever volunteer tidy up as part of this year’s Great British Spring Clean.

Plymouth City Council is backing the national Keep Britain Tidy led campaign, which runs until April 23, which will see up to half a million people taking action to clean up streets, parks and beaches across the country.

The Great British Spring Clean brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to make a difference to the environment on our doorstep and in 2018 around 370,000 #LitterHeroes collected more than 630,000 bags of rubbish.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene for Plymouth City Council, said: “We are working with local volunteer groups such as Clean Our Patch and Plymouth Beach Clean Volunteers to encourage local communities to get involved with cleaning up their local area. The council’s Street Services team is supporting all the litter picks.

“We should all have pride in Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City and we all have our part to play –as a cooperative council it also support our ambition for a fairer city where everyone can do their bit.”

El Clarke, founder of Clean Our Patch community litter pickers in Plymouth, said: “Since I helped set up Clean Our Patch in March 2018, the number of people taking part in our volunteer litter picks has continued to go up and up.

Where possible, participants will recycle as much as they can using the ‘three bags full’ approach, and volunteers will be asked to

separate the litter they pick into three bags: one for plastic bottles; one for aluminium cans and a third for the rest of the rubbish.

Plymouth City Council will then collect these bags to ensure that they are recycled appropriately.

'Talking about my mental illness changed my life' Most of us have either suffered with poor mental health or felt helpless watching a loved one or friend struggle. It’s a difficult time for everyone involved, and it can be stressful waiting for support.

Often, empathy from someone who understands first-hand how debilitating and terrifying emotional crisis is can be the much needed relief that helps to manage what’s happening.

Since July last year, Plymouth has had an out of hours drop in service called ‘Head Space’. The service has been commissioned by the NEW Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) as part of their long term plan to improve mental health services in collaboration with Devon & Cornwall Police and mental health professionals.

It is run by Colebrook South West, a charity working with vulnerable people in Plymouth since 1983. It was recognised that evenings and weekends can be especially troubling times for people approaching a mental health crisis. There is little help available and it can be terrifying to try and manage these powerful feelings alone.

Judging by service users’ feedback, it is already a success.

People don’t need a ‘diagnosis’ or a referral to use the service. It provides a real alternative for people not only reducing demand on services such as the police or A&E but people who have used the service have said it’s a much better experience for them”.

The CCG working with Devon Partnership Trust and Devon County Council has already commissioned services across wider Devon following the success of the Plymouth model and hopes to be able to expand the availability of the Plymouth services.

Dedicated volunteers, who have their own

lived experience, make up a team alongside paid members of staff. Together they offer a nonclinical, safe, calm space to support people who feel they are approaching crisis.

The service currently operates from the Jan Cutting Centre four days a week, but from April the service will be open Wednesday to Sundays 6pm-10pm at the following centres: Wednesday: The Rees Centre, Mudge Way, Plympton PL7 2PS; Thursday and Friday: Four Greens Wellbeing Hub, Whitleigh Green, PL5 4DD; Saturday and Sunday: The Jan Cutting Centre, Scott Business Park, Beacon Park Road, PL2 2PQ People can also phone for support during these hours, or for reassurance before accessing the service on 07890 257614. What to expect Upon arrival a triage system is used (similar to A&E). Some details are taken about you and your situation. The service is completely confidential, and these details help to prove how essential the service is. You will be offered the option of a private 1-2-1 chat; you can take part in some activities in the main area, or just have a warm drink and a snack in a safe and welcoming environment.

Staff will explain to everyone using the service its code of ethics which aim to create a safe space

and nurture a culture of respect towards each other.

Members of the team have a good understanding of Plymouth’s mental health support systems and services.

They will listen to users and share some of their experiences. There is scope for onward referrals to access further support or signposting toward relevant support groups etc that may be of benefit.

Who is it for?

Adults 18+ who feel they are approaching a mental health crisis.

Carers, concerned friends and family members who want to support someone they care about by encouraging them to talk with someone who understands first-hand how scared, overwhelmed or hopeless they are feeling.

Head Space does not offer therapy or diagnosis and it’s not suitable for those having an acute psychotic episode.

Head Space recognises that in order to help more people, the service will be needed additional nights a week and at different points across the city. More volunteers and donations of games and craft items are needed to make this possible. Memory Matters Hub is launched Moments Café have officially launched their Memory Matters Hub in Plymouth city centre.

Moments Café in New George Street opened its doors in March 2017 and is run by two nurses, Kate Smith and Laura Walker, who are passionate about supporting the lives of people living with dementia.

The organisation is a non-commissioned social enterprise where profits from the café enable them to run the Memory Matters Hub (located above the café) as well as their workshops in Cornwall. This free resource for the people of Plymouth is a unique one stop shop for all memory matters.

Kate Smith said: “As a social enterprise, we are an organisation that reinvests its profits for the social good. Our aim is to provide a service that works for those that need it!

Laura and I are fortunate enough to work with a group of people who inspire us; living with dementia can be difficult and we aim to ensure that we can continually provide the resources to ease their path.”

The hub was opened by the Deputy Lord Mayor, followed by a brief talk by Kate and Laura. The launch was sponsored by Nash&Co

The Memory Matters Hub wanted to give their available space a more personal touch, so they decided to rename their rooms after inspirational people who have been affected by dementia in some way.

They now have the Ken Emmett Room, the Norman Bickford Room, the Jennings-Kitwood Suite and finally, the Arthur Read Room.

Arthur and his family attended the event, so he was given the opportunity to open his own room - a very emotional moment for all involved. There is nothing like this anywhere else in the world - Memory Matters and Moments Café are pioneers in bringing the needs of those with dementia to the high street whilst tackling issues with compassion and kindness.

There are currently 850,000 people across the UK living with dementia, and 3,000 of those who have received a diagnosis live in Plymouth. This figure is due to rise to 3,667 by 2020.

Since opening two years ago, the Memory Matters Hub has supported 632 families in Plymouth by providing support and advice, signposting people to the appropriate services and helping those living with dementia and their families by offering space and time to talk. As a result of this, 75 hospital admissions have been prevented.

The social enterprise has spent the last 12 months developing the Memory Matters Hub with its different zones of support and information. The official launch took place on March 15, coinciding with the café’s second birthday.

Plans for college croquet project to expand across city It is hoped a project to bring people with dementia and young people together which started at a Plymouth secondary school six years ago will be rolled out across other schools in the city.

The Jiminy Wicket dementia croquet sessions take place regularly at Stoke Damerel Community College with younger students and residents of local care homes and on 14 March representatives from other schools in the city came along for the first time to see how their schools can get involved, as did Plymouth's Lord Mayor Sam Davey.

Cllr Ian Tuffin, Plymouth City Council cabinet member for Health and Adult Social Care, also attended for a second time. "It is a privilege to be at Stoke again to see everyone's enjoyment and the amazing care the College's young people display," said

"I really want to spread this around the city, it can play an important part in our work to tackle loneliness and social isolation."

Lord Mayor Cllr Sam Davey said the students were "a credit to the College".

"They were an absolute joy to meet, so confident and polite, but full of fun," he said.

"I had a wonderful time, as I am sure the residents from the homes did as well."

James Creasey travelled from his home in Colorado for the session - he set up Jiminy Wicket with his brother Andrew when their father, Maxwell, was diagnosed with dementia and he and his brother Andrew began to search for an enjoyable way for them to spend time together.

Andrew hopes the project will expand across Plymouth too.

"We know that the magic is here," he said.

"Now I think the

magic is about to explode around Plymouth, the engagement and interest of the other schools and their desire to replicate the joy and happiness here is palpable."

The sessions are a highlight for residents of St Barnabas Care Home in Stoke according to Holly McNamara, the home's Social Inclusion officer.

"They always get excited when they know they are coming for a game of croquet, the students are brilliant and really look after them."

Year 8 student Ansku said she and her fellow students look forward to it just as much.

"It's really lovely to spend time with our visitors," she said.

"They have such interesting stories and are good company - you can learn a lot spending time with older people and there is nothing to be scared of."

Executive principal of Stoke Damerel, Anita Frier, said: "It is heartwarming to see our students being so caring and confident in talking to our visitors.

"It is vital to educate our students to understand dementia and remove the barriers and fear around this condition."

Brenda’s role is champion at Morrison’s Brenda Hatherall has been with Morrison’s for 20 years, and for the last three she has been the Community Champion for the Outland Road store.

In that role, she recently presented pupils from Mayflower Primary School with a hamper of books, to mark World Book Day in March. As well as the hamper given to Mayflower School, Shakespeare School and Pennycross also benefited.

Over the last three years, Brenda has organised events to raise more than £32,000 for local community charities.

She insists that it’s not all her own work, though: “It’s everyone in the store really, all the staff, as well as our customers,” said Brenda.

Helen Kelly, people manager at Morrison’s Outland Road, affirmed Brenda’s efforts wholeheartedly. “I’m fairly new here,” she said, “but it’s obvious that her engaging personality

and interpersonal skills make her the ideal choice for one of our Community Champions. She’s passionate about this, and it’s outstanding how much she has done. She has lots of innovative ideas, too.”

One of those ideas was to have a ‘water and wine’ challenge, where visitors to the store made a donation and then

had chance to choose a wrapped bottle from a counter containing lots of bottles – a few were wine, the rest were water.

Whether people were lucky winners or not, they enjoyed the challenge and it was one of many such ideas that have helped raise money, especially for Morrison’s chosen charity CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children, young people and their families.

On World Cancer Day, Brenda’s efforts raised £4,600 from raffles, cake sales and booksales.

That was the Brenda at highest amount raised Mayflower School in Morrison’s stores nationwide – a remarkable achievement and a clear sign that Brenda’s doing a great job and the people of Plymouth have generous hearts!

A man who walked the talk THE

I remember sitting in a large field on a sunny day in August in the early 1990s with a few thousand Greenbelt Festival goers listening to a motor bike riding, leather-clad preacher from Australia share the most authentically spiritual and powerful message on personal identity and value and the meaning of life I had ever heard.

It was so powerful that we play a recording of this condensed message on Cross Rhythms radio and affiliate stations around the world virtually every day.

Reverend John Smith died in early March this year at the age of 76. He had the opportunity to at least finish a documentary about his incredible life since he had wrestled with cancer for almost 19 years. As with anything about his life he was a fighter, not for self, but for others. On the occasional times we connected they were always life changing and inspiring for me.

His most famous book was called ‘On the Side of the Angels’ and he was regarded as the pastor of many outlaw motorbike riding clubs including the Melbourne Chapter of the Hell’s Angels. He would bury and marry their members; from these folks - considered by many to be on the margins of society - he gained a grudging respect because he ‘walked the talk’.

John started his ministry in the sixties and seventies which some have considered the most culturally diverse and challenging Chris Cole decades of the last century in the western world. They used to say that you could tell if you were a child of the swinging sixties, because if you were there, you probably couldn’t remember it. In other words, for many, it was a crazy time.

He was a product of the phenomenon known as the Jesus People Movement revival of the sixties and seventies which birthed the different genres of contemporary and worship music you can listen to on our radio stations and online today. However, John came from a completely different background. He was very conservative and a school teacher, but a teacher with a great deal of compassion. The story is too complex for this article, but he ended up, motivated by love of Jesus Christ ministering to the outlaw communities as Jesus had done with the lepers of His day in Israel.

John and his wife Glena have left a legacy which will grow and grow because it wasn’t initiated by them, but their love of Christ. Like ripples

in a pond their spiritual influence will continue to grow, flourish and bear much fruit as does the Kingdom of God, which is described in the biblical book of Isaiah: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.”

John is at peace now. He has run a faithful race. He didn’t do it in an attitude of self-righteousness, but in acknowledgement that his life was undergirded and led through the grace and genuine love of His saviour, Jesus Christ. When you listen to our programmes and you hear his voice, know that John, deep within his heart, ‘walked the talk’.

Lions Club is helping local charities A number of local charities and individuals have received donations from the Lions Club of Plymouth.

Friends and Families of Special Children received £300 towards its work in Plymouth. The charity raises funds for the whole family to participate in activities together, such as 10 pin bowling or a trip to a leisure park, alongside other families in the same situation. They can support each other and enjoy an outing or event together. It can provide a valuable form of respite for the families.

Life with a child with special needs in the family can be challenging, exhausting and isolating. It can also be lots of fun, and Friends and Families help to enable this.

Clive Pattison and three companions have received £200 towards their fund raising for Meningitis Resarch, because of his son’s close call with the illness. Clive and the team will be competing in the ‘The Wacky Rally’ which starts on July 5 in Lille, France and finishes in Barcelona three days later, by converting a Saab95 estate into a tank with working turret and operating water cannon. They have registered the team as ‘Green Army 1’ because of his son’s avid support for Plymouth Argyle.

Meanwhile £200 has been pledged to the mother of Corgan, an eight year old local deaf boy to help her acquire Level 3 British Sign Language. The fees for this are about £1000 and the Lions already gave him a special laptop some years ago.

Future fund raising events by the Lions include Sponsored Knitting at Emmanuel Church Hall, Mannamead on April 13. The aim of the event is to be sponsored to knit as many squares as possible within a given time period.

At a later date, the squares are sewn together and distributed to retirement or nursing homes and individuals within the Plymouth area. The event will be open from 10am until 4pm, with music, a free lunch and refreshments available.

This year’s Dartmoor Walk will be held on July 7, starting and finishing at Wotter Village Hall. Teams of all ages and abilities can join the walk to raise money for their own charity and local Lion’s charities.

Running from June 5 to 8, MTV Music Week will see a huge range of acts perform in the city at live evening shows, along with inspirational daytime events targeted at young people with a passion for music.

Supported by Plymouth City Council, MTV will host four exciting evening events at venues across the city: • MTV Push on Wednesday June 5 at The Treasury • MTV Presents on Thursday June 6 at Plymouth Pavilions • YO! Disney will be sprinkling its magic across Britain’s Ocean City in September 2020, with the inaugural visit of the Disney Magic cruise liner.

The Disney Magic is over 300 metres long and can accommodate more than 2,800 passengers, which will make her one of the biggest cruise ships to ever visit Plymouth when she arrives on September 7 2020. This has been made possible thanks to support from Destination Plymouth, Plymouth City Council and Associated British Ports (ABP) Plymouth.

The visit of the Disney Magic is expected to attract a huge amount of attention - when she made her first visit to other UK ports, such as Liverpool, huge crowds turned out to see the ship. As she will be anchored in Plymouth Sound, the Hoe will provide the perfect viewing point for those wanting to catch a glimpse.

Passengers on board will land at both Millbay and Commercial Wharf on the Barbican via tenders. For over a year, local companies and attractions have been working in partnership with ABP Plymouth, Cattewater Harbour Commissioners and the Queens Harbour Master, as well as Plymouth Boat Trips, to develop proposals for shore excursions in and around the city.

Destination Plymouth, said: “We have been working very hard over the past three years in the cruise market, supported by Cruise Britain and with funding from Visit England, to encourage cruise vessels to come to Plymouth.

“This visit is particularly exciting for us both in terms of the amount and type of passengers visiting but also in terms of developing our relationship with the Disney Cruise brand.

“Over the next 12 months our cruise liner volunteers will be receiving extra support including additional training, new uniforms and a new base to work from so they are ready to provide the very best possible port welcome in 2020. We will also be working closely in partnership with the city’s businesses to ensure that all those visiting recommend Plymouth as a great place to come back to visit.”

In 2018, four cruise vessels stopped in Plymouth, with seven currently booked to visit in 2019. A further 12 vessels have already booked to berth in 2020, which will equate to around 13,000 passengers. Destination Plymouth aims to increase this post-2020 as a strong legacy of Mayflower 400.

The No 13 Target Travel bus stops quite near it, and there is a large car park virtually next door to the hall.

These meetings are from 2pm to 4pm and we supply a very good buffet and as with all of our meetings we do have a raffle. Members of our group have free access but non-members will be asked to pay £2.

Anyone intending to come regularly to these meetings would find it more economical to pay the £12 single £20 double annual membership fee, and would also be eligible to take advantage of our subsidised taxi scheme (£2 each way). Heartswell South West, the regional heart charity, has donated a new defibrillator and cabinet worth £2,000 to Plymouth’s leading women’s charity, Trevi House.

Heartswell South West is a charitable organisation whose aims are to make a positive difference to people affected by heart disease or heart condition and to provide accommodation for relatives, friends and carers of people undergoing treatment in hospitals across the South West.

A defibrillator is a machine which restarts the heart in the event of a cardiac arrest. If a defibrillator is used within 3-5 minutes of cardiac arrest, survival rates jump from 6%74% and therefore could save a life.

The charity has been running a vital defibrillator programme for the past five years providing defibrillators for communities, clubs, schools and organisations across Devon and Cornwall. It aims to ensure that as many defibrillators as possible are placed in across the South West.

Normally the charity requests that organisations pay between £500 and £1,750 towards the cost of the defibrillator.

However Heartswell, on this occasion, agreed to support Trevi House in fully funding the equipment.

Hannah Shead, chief executive of Trevi House, said: “We are really grateful to Heartswell for their generosity and support for the women and children that we care for every year.

“We know that the women we support have a higher than normal risk of cardiac problems and so it is reassuring to know that we now have a life saving defibrillator on site.”

Liz Harding, operations manager, Heartswell South West said: “Trevi House provide incredible support to women who are at a high risk of cardiac arrest and we are glad that together, we have been able to ensure that their first aid kit is now fully equipped with a defibrillator.

Dartmoor Rambling Club The Dartmoor Rambling Club is a long established Rambling Club based in Plymouth. We have a regular programme of walks on alternate Wednesdays and at some weekends. College receives £280,000 to develop virtual reality training in construction City College Plymouth has received £280,000 funding from the Construction Industry Training Board to develop and deliver a two year immersive learning project in close collaboration with Kier Living and We Are The Moment, partnering with Plymouth Construction Training Group and Building Plymouth.

The project will develop state-of-the-art training experiences to support the booming investment and 10,000 projected new jobs expected in construction in Plymouth over the next five years.

The partnership will promote the implementation of new virtual reality (VR) technologies in both higher education and further education and in the construction sector, attracting and retaining talent to improve productivity and address skills gaps in this vital industry.

Record breaking pub quiz raises £5,000 for Shekinah

Engineering consultants, Services Design Solution (SDS) held their fifth annual charity pub quiz at the Walkabout Pub in Plymouth and raised a staggering £5,000 for Shekinah.

John Hamblin, chief executive of Shekinah, gave a presentation about the work of the charity and said the money raised will support the work Shekinah does in ending rough sleeping and helping people improve their lives away from the streets.

A total of 29 teams took part in the quiz, comprising engineers, contractors, architects, project managers and clients, who enjoyed a fun, well-organised evening, and deserving champions of the night were engineering and services provider N G Bailey.

Members of staff from Santander helped out on the night by selling raffle tickets and generously contributed £1000 to the total amount raised for Shekinah.

The redevelopment of North Prospect, which is now approaching its final phase, will receive £1 million from the new Housing Investment Fund, a key part of Plymouth City Council’s latest Plan for Homes.

The money will go towards the construction of new roads and footways, updates to the drainage systems and the installation of services like electric and gas.

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet member for Housing and Cooperative Development, said: “The regeneration of North Prospect is highly regarded nationally and has won a number of prestigious development awards and I’m delighted that the project is now on track to come to a successful completion.

The regeneration of North Prospect is a project led by Plymouth Community Homes and supported by the city council.

Over the course of the project, old and decaying housing stock, often in a condition beyond economic repair, are being replaced with brand new, energy efficient homes for social/affordable rent, shared ownership and outright sale.

It has already seen more than 650 new homes completed alongside the Beacon, a new community hub housing shops, a new library, a Children’s Centre and 39 flats for older residents.

In addition, the park at Cookworthy Green has been enlarged and improved and now provides a quality and well managed green space, which is well used by local residents and their families.

Three previous phases are now complete and with one underway, the final phase will see the building of 56 new homes as well as the replacement of 140 existing properties.

School musicians play at university Five music groups from Plymouth schools, all with tutors sponsored by Plymouth Music Accord, played for a large audience of parents and friends in the Sherwell Centre at Plymouth University.

Dr Robert Taub, the new director of music at Plymouth University’s Arts Institute, welcomed the performers: Lipson Sax Group, Lipson Brass Group, Devonport High School for Girls Junior and Intermediate Strings Groups and Torpoint Community College Choir.

The young people’s commitment was clear, with very high standards being set and met. The presentation was lively and tutors compered with some good jokes, both verbal and visual.

Music ranged from pop culture classics such as the Simpsons theme tune to folk fiddle music and modern pop. There were even some surprises; who knew Beethoven had arranged his Moonlight Sonata for saxophone?

Exciting programme revealed for Armed Forces Day 2019

The spectacular Red Arrows will return to Plymouth this year for Armed Forces Day on Saturday June 29.

Huge crowds gathered to watch the impressive aerobatic team the last time they performed in the city in 2012, when Plymouth hosted the national Armed Forces Day event.

Councillor Pete Smith, deputy leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that the Red Arrows will be returning to Plymouth this summer, adding extra excitement to our already impressive Armed Forces Day line-up.”

The Red Arrows will close the air display, which starts at 5pm. The display will also include a rescue demonstration from the Coastguard in partnership with the RNLI and flypasts from a Royal Navy Merlin helicopter and an RAF Spitfire.

Visitors to Armed Forces Day can also enjoy the arena programme, with parades, bands and the popular field gun competition, as well as displays of military vehicles and equipment.

Following the air display, there will be a free outdoor evening concert headlined by One Step Behind, the UK’s leading Madness tribute band. Also taking to the stage are last year’s X Factor runner-up Scarlett Lee and a Tom Jones tribute act.

Road closures and exclusion zones will be in place around the time of the air display to ensure public safety. More details will be announced closer to the time.

The hugely popular, family-friendly Plymouth Armed Forces Day will take place on Plymouth Hoe. This year’s event will see audiences wowed by air displays, parades, live music and the arena and stage programmes, which includes a free outdoor evening concert.

The start of the day will see the Parade of Standards, as veterans and cadets march

across the Hoe promenade. Throughout the day, visitors will be able to watch the Field Gun competition with tri-service teams competing for the prestigious Babcock cup, the Unarmed Combat Display by 30 CDO Stonehouse Royal Marines and performances from bands including the City of Plymouth Pipe Band and the marching band of the Royal Marines, Plymouth.

From 5pm, an air display will take to the skies, starting with a rescue display from the Coastguard in partnership with the RNLI. There will be a flypast from a Royal Navy Merlin helicopter and an RAF Spitfire plane, with more displays to be announced.

Across the Hoe, a number of ‘villages’ will showcase the Royal Navy, Army, RAF, Royal Marines and the emergency services, with vehicles and equipment on display, information about recruitment and military personnel to meet.

The Veteran’s Village, supported by the Royal British Legion, will also see more than 60 local charities and organisations showcasing their work, offering information, advice and support.

The main stage will host performances from local choirs and groups throughout the day, including the Community Military Kids Choir and the Military Wives Choir.

From 6pm a free evening concert, sponsored by C&G Catering, will entertain the crowds with a fantastic range of live music.

The night will be headlined by One Step Behind, the UK’s leading Madness tribute band. Also taking to the stage is Scarlett Lee, last year’s X Factor runner-up, a Tom Jones tribute act and the Royal Marine Function Band.

The Waterside and West Chronicle is delivered door to door every month to homes in Stonehouse, Mount Wise, Devonport, Stoke, Keyham, Millbridge, Milehouse, Beacon Park, Pennycross, Ford, North Prospect, Ham, Weston Mill, Barne Barton and St Budeaux.

Councillors support city-wide Clean Our Patch litter-picking Volunteer-led community action group Clean Our Patch has been supported by Labour Councillors from across the city, and the council’s Waste Management Team, to support them in their mission to clean up Plymouth.

Using grant donations from Labour city councillors, Clean Our Patch has purchased an events gazebo and around 60 litter pickers, 30 hoops, and 30 high visibility jackets, to support recruiting more volunteers and ensure their safety when out collecting rubbish.

Clean Our Patch was started in 2018 by El Clarke and Ash Samuels and has led around 80 litter picks across the city, including in Honicknowle, West Park, Keyham, Devonport, Mountwise, Mutley, Plymstock, Plympton, the Hoe, Bovisands, St Budeaux, and Burrington Park industrial estate. The volunteers have an arrangement with the City Council to collect rubbish after the litter picks. In 2018 volunteers with Clean Our Patch collected 1280 bags, roughly 12.5 tonnes of litter, plus a range of large items.

The first two months of 2019 have already seen the collection of 681 bags or 6.5 tonnes of litter.

Some of the more colourful items picked up include safes, ironing boards, a commode, Nikes, scooters, wallets and purses, stolen bank cards, piles of dirty nappies, needles, noz canisters, a satellite dish, a microwave, children’s toys, shopping trollies, Christmas trees complete with strings of lights, and a toilet brush!

El Clarke, co-founder of Clean our Patch, said: “When we first started out, we never imagined that it would grow into something so big. Words cannot describe the gratitude and appreciation that we have for all of the support we have received. We have been able to grow and develop our ambassador scheme and it is looking hopeful that we will have recruited in Keyham, Plympton and Plymstock. With the funding we have received we have been able to facilitate this growth and in time we will have groups in every ward of Plymouth! In some areas this may involve merging or collaborating with pre-existing groups. As well as the practical litter picking we will be developing an education scheme that will aim to educate at a grass roots level. We hope that this will be the key to making lasting change happen.”

The May edition of the Plymouth Chronicle in Waterside and West will be published on May 3, with a copy deadline of April 23. The Waterside & West edition is one of four hyper local editions delivered to a total of more than 90,000 homes throughout the city.
