HECTOR THE HARPENDEN HOPPER BUS TO GO ON EXTENDED LEAVE…
So, the bad news is that a decision has been made to put Hector out to grass, and to suspend the current Hopper service from the end of play on Thursday 9 August for the remainder of the year. The good news is that this will give us time:
The Harpenden Hopper is a community bus service run by local volunteers for local people of all ages. Passengers tell us that they like the community feel of the bus – an opportunity to get out into town, meet fellow passengers, go to the shops, have a coffee and avoid the hassle of parking in town. Successful Pilot Scheme We are delighted with the feedback from the pilot scheme. We are proud of our fleet of trained volunteer bus drivers, the efficient team of operators, a well-organised rota system, an enthusiastic team of supporters and a regular group of Hopper passengers. BUT Although the Hopper team and the bus system are firing on all cylinders, Hector the Hopper Bus isn’t! Hopper Hiccups If you are a regular passenger you will know that Hector has been misbehaving several times both last year and this year. And he gives us no notice that he is going to go on strike. On one such occasion an inspired volunteer driver drove the route in his own car to collect waiting passengers rather than let them down. That is the level of service we would like to provide for you but Hector is letting the side down. Bad News, Good News Each time Hector goes for a checkup, the longterm prognosis is not encouraging. 6
• To source a shiny new bus (and ideally a backup vehicle) • To amend the current route to town from Kinsbourne Green through Roundwood • To perfect plans to extend the route to include Eastmoor Park and Southdown • To factor passengers’ suggestions into a new and improved scheme We’ll be back in the Spring! Keep an eye on the news on our website www.harpendenhopper.co.uk Or contact 01582 638007 or hopon@harpendenhopper.co.uk

BE AWARE!
COLLECTING FOR A BOXING CLUB There continues to be young males on the streets in shopping centres and at train stations asking for money across the county to help support a boxing club. Please be advised that this is completely fabricated and that they are not fund raising for any boxing club, they are simply asking for money for their own gain. Please can you inform all of your vulnerable and elderly in the area to please not supply these individuals with money, as this is who the young males are targeting. If approached and you feel threatened then please ring 999 or if you see this sort of activity please ring 101. KNIFE CRIME The Police, Council, schools and colleges are working together as part of a long term plan in response to knife crime. Some young people say that they carry a knife for protection or to make them feel safer, even though they wouldn’t think of using it. However, research has shown that you’re actually more likely to become a victim of crime if you’re carrying a knife. The penalties for carrying one are also severe. Knife crime has truly devastating consequences for families and local communities and we need to change young people’s attitudes so they are not tempted to carry a knife in the first place. Therefore we are urging all parents to talk to their children about the permanent consequences of knife crime. For more information, see www.knifefree.co.uk FLY TIPPING Fly-tipping is a serious criminal offence and a blight on our countryside. A person convicted of flytipping could face a fine of up to £50,000 and/or 12 months imprisonment. In more serious cases a Crown Court may impose an unlimited fine and the prison term increases to 5 years. If you witness fly-tipping actually taking place call the police on 999 and give as much detail as possible. If you discover fly-tipped waste after the event call our hotline number 01727 809019 or email us the details on wastemanagementservices@stalbans.gov.uk MORE WAYS TO CONTACT LOCAL POLICE OFFICERS The PCC is pleased to announce that following feedback from the public most local police stations are once again open for members of the public to visit, but please book ahead. Booking an appointment is easy - just contact the Force Control Room to request a meeting with an officer. Callers will be offered a visit to their home via the existing ‘diary car’ system, or an appointment at a station most convenient to them. The initiative supports David Lloyd’s Community Safety and Crime Plan as well as the Constabulary’s commitment to continually review the ways public can contact and interact with the police. For more details visit where you can also use the webchat service to find out more information or to report crimes online. 14

ST ALBANS, HARPENDEN & DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY ARE BRINGING THEIR HOBBY TO A WIDER PUBLIC STAMPFEST – SATURDAY 27TH OCTOBER 2018
Have you thought about taking up a new hobby or are you a collector who might like to get more out of your hobby? If so, then STAMPFEST in St. Albans on Saturday 27 October is designed for you.
As the local club for those interested in stamps and postal history – the St. Albans, Harpenden & District Philatelic Society - is running STAMPFEST to show the different types of collecting in the presence of club members, ready to answer your questions, and stamp/postcard dealers to cater for existing collectors. And the types of collections are many and go far beyond the stamp collecting that many will remember from their school days.
STAMPFEST is taking place at St Albans County Club, 28 Ridgmont Road, St Albans AL1 3AG (facing the preserved signal box at City Station) between 10am to 4pm. For more information contact Terry Reynolds on 01582 621421. The event will give the newcomer an opportunity to take a good look at the many aspects of philately in a relaxed atmosphere, and to chat and ask questions about what the hobby has to offer. For the existing collector it is the chance to see what belonging to a club has to offer and how it can enhance your enjoyment of the hobby. The members of the “St Albans & Harpenden” look forward to meeting you on the 27 October.
Today’s philately can embrace telling a story through “social philately”, themes such as railways, ships and planes, the study of history and old letters, revenue stamps and “cinderellas” that look like stamps but aren’t.
Leadwork Services: Lead Welding & Bossing Restoration Bespoke Leadwork Box Gutters Flat & Pitched Roofs Colin Smart, the club’s Chairman says “The main thing about this hobby is that you can take it as far as you wish – from tending your collection at home, through enjoying the company of others in clubs such as the St Albans & Harpenden to taking part in national and international competitions”. 18

Some helpful tips from Hertfordshire County Council There are many ways we can protect ourselves so that we stay well in the winter months and reduce our risks of seasonal health issues such as colds and flu, falls and loneliness.
Keep healthy
The flu vaccine is an effective way to keep us well in winter. It’s free for over 65s, pregnant women, those with certain health conditions and carers contact your GP surgery. It is also offered free on the NHS to children aged six months to two years at risk of flu and is given routinely as a painless nasal spray to two and three-year olds plus children in reception class and school years 1, 2, 3 and 4. If you are not in these groups, most local pharmacies provide it for a small fee.
Keep well
Minimise the spread of germs by sneezing into a tissue and putting it in the bin and washing your hands afterwards. If you are feeling unwell, visit your pharmacist for advice.
Keep prepared
Keep a list of emergency numbers by your phone and buy a few store cupboard basics such as soup, long life milk and cheap fl u remedies in case you can’t get out for a few days. Keep warm vulnerable people should heat their home to 21°C (daytime) and 18°C at night to stay healthy. Having regular hot food and drink keeps you warm too. If you need help to keep your home warm, contact HertsHelp.
Keep steady
Stay steady on your feet by wearing shoes with good grip, exercising regularly, eating and drinking properly, getting eyes and hearing tested, managing your medicines and checking for trip hazards. If you think you’re at risk of a fall contact HertsHelp for practical advice and information.
Keep active
Regular physical activity improves our quality of life by helping us stay strong and mobile, especially in the winter months when trips and falls are more common. Moving around regularly or doing some chair exercises if your mobility is limited keeps you warm, lowers blood pressure and reduces risk of heart conditions.
Keep in touch
Some people can feel lonely, especially in the isolating winter months. Looking in on a neighbour, elderly relative or friend can make all the difference. If you are experiencing loneliness, there are lots of activities to help you meet new people and develop new skills. If you’re feeling lonely, contact HertsHelp. For more information about any of the above contact HertsHelp on 0300 123 4044 (local rate),

Danny Baker: Good Time Charlie’s Back Following the extraordinary success of the Cradle To Grave tour I was asked to reconsider my initial statement that I would never undertake such a venture again. The applause of the public can be a seductive narcotic and weaker souls than I would be tempted to repeat the thrills harvested during that ‘uproarious whirligig of joy’ simply to bolster their already outsized egos. SPECIALIST BACK PAIN TREATMENT NOW AVAILABLE IN HARPENDEN Good news for frustrated back pain sufferers! Harpenden Sports + Spinal have joined the IDD Therapy network. We can now offer an advanced treatment for spinal disc problems that is not widely available.
They may have a disc problem that needs more than manual therapy or exercise to deal with their pain. With IDD Therapy, we now have a tool which enables us to do far more for our patients, a serious option to consider before going down the surgery route.” IDD Therapy is non-invasive. It targets specific spinal segments, safely and gently using a stateof-the-art machine called an Accu SPINA. It works by taking pressure off spinal discs, which may be “bulging” or “herniated” and pressing on nerves causing pain, such as sciatica. The clinic offers a free 15-minute consultation for anyone who wants to get an understanding of whether IDD Therapy may be suitable.
The practice is run by two long-established clinicians, osteopath Gillian Brown and physiotherapist Garry O’Dell. Gillian says: “We wanted the IDD Therapy because it enables us to help patients who are often in severe pain which affects their lives. 72

How many calories are in your favourite drink?
With Christmas around the corner, do you know what your favourite drink’s food equivalent is… It’s all very well talking in units, but what does this really mean when you’re at the pub or having drinks with dinner at home? With a pint of lager containing the same amount of calories as a slice of pizza! A standard glass of red or white wine (175ml) with 13% ABV could contain up to 160 calories, similar to a slice of Madeira cake A large glass of wine (250ml) with 13% ABV can add 228 calories to your dinner? That’s similar to an ice cream or two fish fingers! It’s a myth that drinks featuring clear spirits are low in calories. You might be surprised to hear that one vodka and coke made with a 25ml measure of 40% ABV vodka contains 110 calories – similar to a small slice of pizza. Clear spirits contain slightly fewer calories than dark spirits but the calories in vodka and other clear spirits can still quickly add up Dark Spirits contain slightly more calories, a 25ml measure 40% ABV shot, like whisky, with mixer contains 106 calories, similar to a chocolate mousse. Ordering a 50ml ‘double’ spirit measure with 37.5% ABV like gin and mixer contains 149 calories, similar to a chocolate filled pancake To keep health risks from alcohol to a low level, the UK Chief Medical Officers’ (CMO) low risk alcohol unit guidelines advise it is safest not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis. Saving up your weekly units so you can drink them all on a Friday night is not the way to interpret the CMO’s advice, it’s best to spread your intake evenly across the week. 74 74
The size and strength of your drink will determine the number of units it contains. Unfortunately it’s not as simple as one drink, one unit. A glass of wine can range between just over one unit and more than three units, depending on the size of the glass and type of wine. And when you’re drinking at home, you tend to pour measures that are larger than you get in your local, so you could be regularly drinking far more than you think. A great way to avoid losing track of how much alcohol you’re pouring out at home is to use one of drinkaware Unit and Measure Cups, available on their website for 90p. Many people don’t have a realistic idea of how much they’re drinking. A good place to start is by finding out just how many units there are in your favourite drink. Visit: www.drinkaware.co.uk/understand-your-drinking/unit-calculator Also take a self-assessment test online at www.drinkaware. co.uk/selfassessment to understand more about the impact of your drinking or visit www.drinkaware.co.uk for helpful tips and advice. Drinkaware is an independent charity working to reduce alcohol misuse and harm in the UK. We’re here to help people make better choices about drinking. If you’re worried you, or someone you know is drinking too much, visit their page on alcohol dependence www.drinkaware.co.uk/alcohol-facts/drinking-habitsand-behaviours/am-i-alcohol-dependent

PRO_Longevity: “live healthy for longer”
Overweight? Diabetes? Hypertension? Heart disease? Dementia? Cancer?
Manor Pharmacy have devised a way to identify the major risk factors to prevent obesity, blood pressure and even reverse Type 2 Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes. Our new service is extremely simple and involves taking no additional medication. It is based on sound clinical and scientific evidence plus a good dose of common sense. It’s really easy to follow and involves making small, incremental changes to what you eat plus some physical activity. “A long, healthy life is only 20 per cent genetic and an amazing 80 percent about lifestyle.” Most of us know that obesity is linked to poor health yet we unknowingly continue eating and drinking the “wrong” things in vast quantities. Carbohydrates and sugars (not fats!) are the two most unhealthy food groups and both feature in gargantuan proportions in most fast and refined foods. One of the biggest problems is the constant and conflicting evidence put out by the NHS and the food industry. Many GPs are overwhelmed and unable to keep up with the latest developments in understanding how nutrition affects our health – and the big multi-national food and drink companies don’t even want us to think about it. It’s all too easy to ingest vast quantities of sugar and unhealthy carbs. We all know the dangers of fizzy drinks, but fructose-laden drinks such as fruit smoothies are as bad or worse. {Fructose is fruit sugar which sounds healthy doesn’t it? - but the reverse is true} Our bloodstream is designed to carry only a single spoonful of sugar at any given time – that‘s about 5 millilitres.
The next time you buy a smoothie drink look at how much sugar and carbs it contains! 76 76
Our PRO_Longevity service is already showing remarkable results. (Weight loss; drops in blood pressure; improved blood sugars etc) The process begins with a chat about lifestyle (either online or face-to-face) and background information such as height; weight/waist size and blood pressure are recorded. In addition information such as smoking, drinking and exercise are taken into consideration as well as prescribed medication. A small sensor is included in the kit and attached to the body to monitor your blood sugar levels continuously (Careful observers have noticed that Theresa May has one!) The sensor stays attached to the skin for periods of two weeks and during that time you keep a record of everything you eat and drink. A free Smartphone app makes correlations between your diet and any spikes in blood sugar (and therefore insulin) levels. It is understanding and preventing these fluctuations which are key to the process and enable us to see most accurately which foods and drinks are to be avoided by an individual. This is all about lifestyle and NOT a diet - we find other foods that are healthy for you – so there’s no need to go hungry! Weight loss is pretty much guaranteed and as the eight week course continues it is the nutritional reeducation, the understanding of the effects of good and bad food and drink, which have an extraordinary impact. It is not a miracle cure but it is certainly one of the most effective and long-lasting ways of addressing - and reversing - the lifestyle habits which threaten us all. Within 8-weeks most people lose several kg, their blood sugars normalise as does their blood pressure. They feel far healthier and more energetic. With the GP’s agreement prescribed medication can be reduced.

Meatballs Serves: 4
Method:
Prep: 30 minutes Cook: 30 to 60 minutes
Place the beef and pork mince in a large bowl and add the onion, garlic, breadcrumbs and dried herbs. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and mix well with clean hands. Divide the mixture into 20 portions and roll into small, neat balls.
Ingredients:
For the meatballs 250g/9oz lean beef mince 250g/9oz pork mince 1 small onion, very finely chopped 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 25g/1oz fresh white breadcrumbs 2 tsp dried mixed herbs sea salt & freshly ground black pepper 2 tsp sunflower oil For the gravy 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 medium onion, finely sliced 1 tbsp plain flour 150ml/5fl oz red wine 300ml/10fl oz beef stock made with one beef stock cube 1 tbsp tomato purée 80
Heat the sunflower oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the meatballs for 6–8 minutes, or until nicely browned on all sides. Roll the meatballs around in the pan as they brown to prevent them from becoming flattened on one side. Transfer the meatballs to a large lidded saucepan. To make the gravy, heat the sunflower oil in the frying pan and gently fry the onion over a low heat for five minutes, or until softened, stirring regularly. Sprinkle the flour into the pan and stir well. Slowly add the red wine, stock and tomato purée, stirring constantly. Pour the gravy over the meatballs and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat, cover the pan with a lid and leave to simmer gently over a low heat for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the lid and increase the heat. Boil the gravy for another 3–5 minutes or until thickened. Season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve.

GET YOUR SALT IN NOW IN TIME FOR WINTER Resident and community groups can get free salt to grit their streets from Hertfordshire County Council, as the council starts to gear up for the winter. The county council is also offering salt to schools to help them stay open during icy weather, as well as to parish and town councils who can use their local knowledge to identify exactly where best to use the salt during severe weather. District and borough councils that help with clearing high priority pavements can apply for up to 30 tonnes of salt to assist with highway treatments at no cost.
Phil Bibby, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “It may seem quite early to be thinking about snow and ice, but last winter showed how important it is to be prepared. We’ll be ordering thousands of tonnes of salt for the county’s main roads and while we’re doing that it seems sensible to order some for resident and community groups, or parish and town councils, who want to help keep their local roads and pavements clear. Our gritters can’t get everywhere, so it’s a real help when local groups are willing to do their bit too.” The salt will be provided for use on the public highway, not on private property, and the county council can only make one delivery of salt at the beginning of the winter.
Application forms can be found at: Resident and community groups can apply for up to www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/salting 680kg of salt,Claridge and schools can ask for up to 1 tonne. Last & Hall PAINTING half page ad.pdf 1 15/06/2017 15:25 year some 200 local groups took advantage of the offer. & must be received by the county council by 31st October.

MIRROR MIRROR ON MY WALL…
No matter where you put one, mirrors are an easy way to reflect light, make a space look bigger, and open up a room.
Just like windows, mirrors add light and depth to the room interior, so feel free to use them as decorative windows that could be installed in any place you wish. It shouldn’t necessarily be a big wall mirror, even a small mirror in bold framing can become a centre of attention. Designers tend to use mirrors in small rooms since they are able to visually expand it. Just make sure it reflects nice views. Mirrors cannot only enlarge space, but also brighten it up and become an additional source of lighting. Large floor mirrors allow making a statement in a narrow room and bring a dramatic effect, which cannot be accomplished by other décor elements.
You will be surprised to find out that mirrors can serve as full-fledged art objects. Simply play with them and try to hang a group of mirrors on a certain wall. Ensure the mirrors are proportional to each other and to the wall: don’t try to hang a multitude of small mirrors on a big wall. Entryways, dining rooms and other areas that deprive of natural light are perfect for installing mirrors. When complemented with candles, art objects and original lighting, they allow creating a one-of-a-kind ambiance.

FEEDING BIRDS THIS WINTER
Gardens
(Advice from the RSPB)
Although winter feeding benefits birds most, food shortages can occur at any time of the year. By feeding the birds year round, you’ll give them a better chance to survive the periods of food shortage whenever they may occur. Autumn and winter At this time of year, put out food and water on a regular basis. In severe weather, feed twice daily if you can: in the morning and in the early afternoon. Birds require high energy (high fat) foods during the cold winter weather to maintain their fat reserves to survive the frosty nights. Use only good quality food and scraps.
Badger Landscapes half page ad.pdf
1
Always adjust the quantity given to the demand, and never allow uneaten foods to accumulate around the feeders. Once you establish a feeding routine, try not 09/12/2017 14:11 to change it as the birds will become used to it and time their visits to your garden accordingly.

RECYCLING RATE HITS 60% ANNUAL TARGET Thanks to residents’ recycling efforts, the District Council annual recycling target has been reached for the first time. The recycling rate hit 60.3 per cent for the 12 months ending May 2018, up from 59 per cent for the corresponding period last year. This follows recycling service improvements, including the launch of a weekly food waste collection in 2016. Previously, food accounted for one third of landfill waste, now it has fallen to 26 per cent. Help reduce the amount of food sent to landfill even further by just buying what you need, using up scraps and recycling any leftovers. Need a new or replacement bins? OUT IN THE GARDEN We spend so much time out in the garden over the summer months and I am always sad when summer draws to a close. All of that time spent planting, pruning, sowing, protecting and harvesting has come to an end, and I begin to wonder what I will do with all of my spare time (!) Well this year, I am going to continue to get outside and make sure my vegetable patch has a greater chance of thriving. There are vegetables which will survive the lowering temperatures and hopefully flourish as the days begin to get shorter. BROAD BEANS If the beans are in an exposed position and grow too tall (above a foot), they can wave around and split, so put in canes or sticks and string.Waste not want not- don’t forget, broad bean tops are as delicious as the bean itself - try them wilted with butter. ONIONS, SPRING ONIONS & SHALLOTS There are quite a few varieties of onions and spring onions from sets that can go in now. Many garden centres have shallots available for planting, these have a great subtle taste and store really well. WINTER LETTUCE Just because summer has drawn to an end and you are no longer able to dine al fresco, it doesn’t mean an end to salads! You can still sow a really hardy variety and plant it out under fleece or a perforated polythene sheet. LAMBS LETTUCE It is a perfect winter crop as it does not need high light levels and tolerates low temperatures; it can be sown up until the end of October outside; it can be picked until December or into the new year with some fleece or milder weather. SPINACH A versatile leafy vegetable; pick young leaves and gently wilt or add raw to salads. The big advantage of autumn sowing is that there is no tendency to bolt. 102
PEAS AND PEA SHOOTS For a late spring crop, it’s worth trying sowing seeds now. As with broad beans, don’t forget the other parts of the plant! Pea shoots are very fashionable and can be found on supermarket shelves. GARLIC If you are an amateur gardener and want to get started with an easy crop, try garlic!

AUTUMN MOTORING
We all love the changing colours of autumn but for car owners there are a few jobs to do… 1. Antifreeze Not just for winter, antifreeze is important all year round as it contains additives to prevent corrosion and improve summer cooling too. A frozen engine is very expensive to repair! Call K.S & K.G Tyler in Southdown on 01582 713328 or Victoria Garage in Batford on 01582 760551 to get some professional advice on Antifreeze. – see page 98 & 99 for their adverts. 2. Battery This is one of the most common causes of breakdown at any time of year, but particularly in the winter when electrical loads are higher. If there’s any sign of the battery struggling now the time to change it. Available from Milehams A1 Motor Store 133 Southdown Rd, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 1PU. Tel: 01582 766333. 3. Bulbs Check all bulbs regularly not forgetting brake lights and number plate lights.
The handbook will show you how to change bulbs, though some headlight bulbs may require a visit to the garage. Available from Milehams A1 Motor Store 133 Southdown Rd, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 1PU Tel: 01582 766333 4. Tyres Check all tyres for condition, pressure and tread depth. The AA recommend at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring, so if the treads are getting low think about buying new tyres now. Call Big D’s tyres and get them fitted at your door at competitive prices. Big D’s Tyres Tel: 01582 467800 – see page 5 for advert. 5. Windscreen wipers and washer fluid Blades will last for two years at the most. New blades clear the screen more effectively and so help reduce dazzle from the sun. Top up your washer fluid and treat with a good quality, purpose-made additive to reduce the chance of freezing.Available from Milehams A1 Motor Store 133 Southdown Rd, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 1PU. Tel: 01582 766333.
