DESIGN AS A METAPHOR FOR THE CREATIVE PROCESS. “Ideas arise as much out of casual conversations as they do out of formal meetings... The best ideas in any workplace arise out of casual contacts among different groups within the same company.” – Malcolm Gladwel Periscope Designs sees itself as a visionary in the Spokane graphic design community. The award winning graphic design firm takes its name from the periscope, a device used to transcend the visual limits of the water. The design of their new office in the historic JensenByrd building serves to support the collaborative creative process and foster the professional and fun image Periscope Designs has built.

collaborative staircase The stairs function as both the literal and metaphorical link between the departments of this company. To accommodate the chance meeting that may occur on the stairs, the landing features a “sphere of collaboration.

This bubble-like booth reinforces the nautical theme and provides a measure of privacy for conversations.

sound proof informal meeting space Noise can be a problem in open office concepts. This room provides a multi purpose space where design teams can meet to brainstorm or private phone calls can be made without disturbing coworkers.

The space features 360 degrees of dry erase and magnetic pin up surface. The furniture consists of bean bags and soft stackable cubes that can be arranged to suit the user.
