This is a completely free magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place.
I encourage anyone with a visual arts event to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for your exhibition, classes, workshops, talks etc.
Let’s get the arts out there!
Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible.

The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.
The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.
I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.
I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding.

“As part of my curation of the Patrick Foster Now: LifeLine exhibition at the Queen's Park Gallery this month, I've organised two life drawing sessions Next Saturday 1st February 2025 where participants will have the opportunity to draw from life with a model in the gallery space. It was important for me to make this happen as it is an integral part of Patrick's (and my) work as artists where the collaboration between the artist and model is a unique interaction that always seems to produce results that were greater than the sum of the individual contributions. Space is limited, signup is required, and participants must come with their own materials.”

Heaven & Earth; the Sacred & Profane; the Soul & Soulcase; the Masculine & Feminine; the Interior, the Exterior; the Actor & the Act; Foreground & Background; Darkness & Light. Contrast is perhaps the most efficient way of discerning one thing from another; of creating boundaries. It might be said that Life is an experience of opposites, and it's a cliché to mention that opposites attract, but why is that? It's equally cliché to point out that Flying Fish and Coat of Arms are two sides of the same coin. We can speak about them as opposites as a matter of convention. We can use these apparent dualities to make a decisions, create an identity, and navigate the world. Being able to discern right from left is useful when trying to get from here to there, but once there are "sides" conflict isn't far behind.
What strikes me about Patrick Foster's work is how he experiments with the interplay between the poles of experience; he certainly doesn't take them lightly. Spending the last year meeting to discuss the work - uncovering ever more as we went through the portfolios of sketches, searching shelves that were too high to reach - I know that Patrick's work is more than pictures to be hung on walls, and they are more than sketches of the Body. They are an expression of his Soul's striving towards resolution, towards wholeness: OneLove.
As you experience this exhibition, it is my hope that you sense the path of connections a Soul has taken with other Souls, through the work a Soulcase chose - where recognising the Truth that there is nothing that separates us but convention, and that opposites only appear that way from a certain point of view.
The Body is the only way that Soul has to express itself - and connection is the LifeLine.

Annalee Davis Open Studio Recap.
“To close out 2024, I held an Open Studio on December 14 to share some works including those I worked on at various residencies over the last two years such as at Focus Foundation (Catalan, Spain); Stiftung Künstlerdorf (Schöppingen, Germany); Ruby Cruel (Hackney, UK) Denniston Hill (Upstate NY, USA) and exhibited in lightly, tendrils at CCA Glasgow (Scotland) and in the Empire Remains Shop curated by Cooking Sections (London, UK).
Increasingly the works are meditations on the living world, connecting many of these seemingly far flung places with plants growing in close proximity to my various studio spaces. The act of drawing and a more recent engagement with textiles are offering meditative strategies for calm amidst the climate crisis and this era of ecological grief while evoking the sacrality of all things.
As I ground myself in the beauty, agency and abundance of local flora wherever I am, I continue to reflect on Barbadian plantation history, traditional plant uses emanating from enslaved society and the urgent collective need to develop post-plantation ecologies and perspectives engendered by a closer relationship with the earth. Growing, pressing, drawing and embroidering botanicals encourages a practice of looking at and intimacy with what populates my immediate environment, holding the belief that if we really see and connect with what’s in our spaces, the desire to take care will grow as we simultaneously heal.
Thanks to Pepe and Julie for all their incredible support in making this Open Studio happen, to Seamus and Emily for their help with the preparations, to Dondré Trotman for documenting the day and to everyone who came out, supported the event and acquired work. My gratitude is immense!
The work is available for viewing by appointment only, during the first few weeks of January, so let me know if you’d like to pop by.
Here’s to us all recognising the sacrality of all living things and to moving more softly, lovingly and slowly on the earth in 2025.”

Union Collaborative and Kesean Abrams ‘SEX IN THE CITY’ Open Studio Event held on Monday December 30th
Dreamspace | POD8 | Ground Floor I UNION at Beckwith I Prince Alfred Street I Barbados.
“At this open studio event, Kesean shared the imagery and installation he developed within the last three weeks at UNION at Beckwith within the DREAMSPACES Residency.
Kesean used 88 cubic meters, not only as a studio for contemplative exercises and exploration of different mediums. He also transformed it into an active laboratory to engage the city and people in a confronting way. These interactions active and passive have influenced his experience, the content of the imagery and the feeling of the space.
As he prepares to end this edition of the DREAMSPACES Residency, we invite you to take a moment to gather with us to add to the intangible tapestry while activating the street with art and community. In this iteration visual artist Kesean Abrams has blended graffiti, street art, and Neo-Expressionism to explore notions centred around sex. This collection of work is mixed media where mark making techniques include painting, drawings and airbrush.
The music and lyrics of Bashment and Dance Hall are major influences of this collection. To this end Kesean has collaborated with Dj. Carma to develop a soundscape to ride in tandem with the visual with the intent to enhance the engagement through the sensory.
Union at Beckwith is an emerging creative cluster in Bridgetown being developed by Union Collaborative Inc; a non profit and a social-creative enterprise which exist to provide space, tools and programming for creative practitioners,
DREAMSPACES: an art, design and making residency provides access to approximately 260 sq. ft of space at UNION at Beckwith to a selected creative practitioner or group for their use for a month. The space can be used as a studio, and or exhibition space, and or workshop space and or pop-up.
Dreamspaces, recipients have access to UNIONToolBox, ADM Bank, coARTyard and Portal vitrine galleries and the environment encourages independent, experimental and contemporary thought and expression.”

How It Happened
I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed.
What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting.
The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information.
Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun.
The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.

Our Mission
To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.
The Role of the NCF
The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
FUNCTIONS
of the NCF are:
To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally
To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government
To organize cultural festivals
Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:
To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work
To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage
To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains
To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms
To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders
To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets
To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
