Visualartsbarbadosevents

The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.

The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.

I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.

I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.

I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.

Thank you for understanding.

JULIANA INNISS

I have been a hand-builder since 2000, making my artwork with coils of clay or rolled slabs.

I create work that shares stories of Barbados, my environment, and more importantly of being a Caribbean woman. My current body of work speaks to the centuries’ old tradition of generational pottery-making and conveying stories of my Afro- Caribbean cultural heritage. Clay is generational, transformational, and archival.

Through her work, Jamila offers a meditative reflection on the beauty of the natural environment, inviting viewers to explore the tactile and visual contrasts of the unglazed ceramic surfaces.

I love colour and when painting and illustrating I use bold colours, quick strokes and simple shapes to capture a feeling. It is in this simplicity that the beauty of what I see is reflected.

SARAH ARMSTRONG

I am a Barbadian artist. In 2003 I travelled to London to study interior and landscape design and on my return joined the team at Nature Care designing and coordinating landscape projects in the Caribbean.

In 2017 I dusted off my brushes to try my hand at acrylics, and began classes to learn everything I could about acrylics as well as developing my technique. Most recently, I rekindled my love with chalk pastels.

My art is inspired by scenes in nature and landscapes and is characterized by attention to detail and realism. In contrast, fluid art explores the unpredictability of paint, allowing the colours to merge and flow in organic patterns.

I enjoy melding these two styles. Painting landscapes, flora and fauna allows me to share the beauty and tranquility of nature with others. Through my art, I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the serene moments it offers.

I am not interested in spending time recreating my surroundings which are already perfectly visual. I like to create from whatever pops into my head, I do weirdly tend to paint a lot of dead people! to keep my memory of them alive, people that have brought me joy through their own artistic abilities. “I am a creative, passionate about all artforms which I gain great pleasure and inspiration from.

My own work has evolved through experimentation and exploration of colour, texture and pattern, always on a journey of discovery of how to connect these elements together in my paintings.

I often work from imagination which gives me the freedom to express myself without having any particular outcome in mind or placing any restrictions on a specific style.

Nature and portraits are themes I love to interpret in my own way to encounter different ways to portray feelings and emotions.”

“As a clay artist, I have always used my medium to relax and just enjoy the ride. No hidden meanings, no stories, just wanting to create something that makes one feel good when its seen and touched. I often adopt the phrase “less is more". I usually start with something simple and expand to something unique. Experimenting with different techniques, exploring the possibilities to find the right fit, all while also testing my own boundaries. It’s that journey that allows me to transfer my thoughts onto the piece.”

MAUREEN TRACEY

“As a visual artist, making art is something I’ve always done. Family inspired it. Tutors taught it and led the way. I learned many techniques and was privileged to make it an important part of my life. Art defines me with the many exhibitions I’ve had in many Canadian cities as well as in Barbados. The two worlds blend together because colour, shape and form are everywhere.

As my practice evolves, I now enjoy the simplification of that colour, shape and form allowing the viewer some time to find what they see in the painting. Some time for themselves. And that’s very important for me. Viewers find my work very happy, joyful and comfortable to live with. How lucky we are that art can do that for us.

After having had the challenge, joy and satisfaction of creating and producing a work of art, it now becomes time for the viewer to join my world. It’s a wonderful one and I hope this world is Share with me.”

SUZANNE DAVIS

I was born in Barbados and lived in Trinidad as a child. After 9 years in Canada when first married, I returned to Barbados and worked in real estate, becoming owner of Luxe Caribbean Properties.

It was Indrani Whittingham who suggested I join her art classes and I enjoyed being trained by Indrani for several years, painting in oils at that time. I have done several workshops with Heidi Berger, who exposed me to acrylic painting. I then joined the popular “Love of Art Paint Group” which is tutored by Barbadian Artist Tracey William, an amazing artist and tutor. Over the years I have changed from oils to acrylics and poured paints. I love to paint all forms of nature abstractly, flowers, animals, dancers and scenes under the ocean. I use high flow and mixed media to create vibrant paintings.

STEPHEN SCOTT

Stephen Scott started carving in Barbados as a teenager. Entirely self-taught he was soon winning awards for his work in mahogany at the National Cultural Foundation's Crop Over Visual Arts exhibition and their NIFCA festival.

After Moving to London in 2001 he trained at Camberwell College of Arts and went on to study historic wood carving at the City & Guilds of London Art School. Most of his work is carved from Barbados mahogany and from English oak and lime. Today he is also experimenting with less traditional woods like that of the local neem tree.

ONEKA SMALL

I am a multimedia, multidisciplinary artist and curator. I capture. I paint. I draw. I write. I create installations. I put things together. I use the materials at my disposal to convey my ideas, thoughts and responses to events that move me. Experiencing and sharing these experiences are tantamount for the development of humanity and it cements our interdependence. A lot of my work focuses on emotions and feelings, the unseen. It is the exchange of energy that governs the interaction of all beings, with others and the environment. Very important to my practice is the exploration of the ideas of love and respect.

Lorna Wilson prefers working with acrylic paints but sometimes uses other mediums like wax resist.

She has recently been captivated by different textures and have been experimenting with various acrylic mediums and organic objects to achieve the desired effect she wants.

"My paintings are a reflection of the environment surrounding me so therefore my art represents everything that I see, feel and experience. My aim in painting my subjects is to capture the beauty of the moment."

captivates with her mixed media pieces. Her work processes circumstances, history and feelings by painting subjects against the backdrop of the world that in turn envelops them. Her recognizable artworks adorn the walls of many regional and international collectors, each one a piece of her story that will never quite be purged from her innately creative spirit.

The 10th Annual ‘Anonymous Charity Art Show’ opens on Friday, December 6th until Mid January 2025

Proceeds from this year’s show will go to the Barbados Sea Turtle Project. This charity was started in 1987 to promote conservation of sea turtles in Barbados. For

Our WHY behind the Annual Anonymous Art Charity Show - it’s all about supporting the arts while helping the Barbadian community. Each year we choose a charity and this year it is the Barbados Sea Turtle Project

The nesting beach monitoring program is highly regarded as one of the longestrunning hawksbills monitoring programmes in the world. From less than 100 nesting turtles recorded on the island in the 1990s, Barbados now supports over 600 and is recognized internationally as hosting the largest critically endangered hawksbill nesting population in the insular Caribbean. These results are due to the direct conservation actions, public awareness, and research that form the Project’s core.

Each year they rescue tens of thousands of hatchling turtles and respond to over 2000 calls made to a 24-hour Sea Turtle Hotline; a resource that both Barbadians and tourists have come to rely upon and expect.

ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS

How It Happened

I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed.

What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting.

The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information.

Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun.

The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!

My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.

I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.

With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

Helping the young talent where we can.

This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art.

I just received a donation of art supplies being kindly given by artist Jeena Chatrani, curator of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery. Thank you Jeena.

These will go to a very talented 17 year old to help her keep drawing and painting.

Would you consider looking around your painting/studio space and see if there are any art supplies that you may not want or need and help the future talents of Barbados.

Either give directly to artists whom you feel may need the help or contact me via private message here and drop off the arts supplies and I will happily disburse them to those in need.

Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving.

Please don’t add their names here. Private message me.

Allow them to decide if they want their names added to art supplies being given to them.

Thank you

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
