Welcome to Barbados Monthly Arts Events Thank you to the Gallery of Caribbean Art and The Art Hub who have teamed up to pay for an upgrade for this magazine through 2017. This means The Visual Arts Barbados Magazine may now be viewed with no ads and downloaded. This is a completely free magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place. I encourage anyone with a creative event or a new piece of work to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for you. Let’s get the arts out there! Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible. Corrie

Bread n Chese. Yesterday i ate a handful.Ive forgotten how powerfully astringent the pulp is.It cleans the entire throat,n deep into chest. It brought back many memories... This was a early mornin snack, walking up 'de choppa hill' on the way to mt Tabour primary school in the late 70s.I dont have to mention, how we Foraged our way home, arriving home with torn clothes, designed with all shades of Stains from juices of Fruits. We could have never arrived,in the school yard like that,or headmistress mrs goodridge would have sent for deCane, then we all would have felt eachothers pain.We were more connected then, than children are today. The glue,of exsperiencebonds, were different,Richer,Stronger,Deeper. Those days the country roadsides, were Paradisikal, fruits of all types poured over into the Rural narrow, gravel n tar potholed roads. There were less monkeys n way more fruit trees then, the rainydays were more abundant. We could have hardly reached school ontime in the mornings. Those days, the amount of vegatables n fruits around,it seemed as if everyone were farming the land. Fresh Milk welcomes Nyugen Smith and Letitia Pratt
Fresh Milk is excited to welcome US-based interdisciplinary artist Nyugen Smith and Bahamian writer Letitia Pratt to the platform for the month of June, 2017. While in Barbados, Nyugen will be working on a project which contributes to a multi-part installation titled Lavway. (“Lavway” is Trinidadian patois for “le vrai,”or “the truth” in French, and is the name of a form of calypso that reports the truth as seen by the singer or composer.) Lavway will examine the education system in the Caribbean from late nineteenth century to present day with a focus on systematic omission of histories and contributions of people from the African diaspora. His Fresh Milk residency will be spent in part on research and collecting relevant objects, recordings, and texts in relation to this. https://freshmilkbarbados.com/2017/06/02/fresh-milk-welcomes-nyugen-smith-and-letitia-pratt-to-the-platform/
Letitia intends to use the residency to work on an individual poetic project, Melody of a Lost Woman. This series of twelve narrative poems will focus specifically on Bahamian womanhood and the effects of the patriarchy on the feminine existence within the Bahamas. The piece draws strongly on Moya Bailey’s concept of misogynoir, which refers to the violence that black women endure by the hands of black men. Her work and research in Barbados will question the ways Bahamian misogynoir differs from other patriarchal incarnations, and explore commonalities through Caribbean history and folklore to consider these experiences across the African diaspora. Letitia Pratt recently obtained her Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from the College of the Bahamas. An avid reader of fantastic fiction, most of her writing navigates the existence of black (feminine) bodies within that genre and draws heavily on stories within Bahamian folklore. Her themes often explore the function of art and literature within the Bahamas, and her most recent published work, ‘A Scene (of Two Lovers Contemplating Suicide)‘ discusses the concept of liminality within artwork, and how it’s the ability to occupy multiple spaces creates an active exchange of ideologies.
Drawing heavily on his West Indian heritage, Nyugen Smith is committed to raising the consciousness of past and present political struggles through his practice which consists of sculpture, installation, video and performance. He is influenced by the conflation of African cultural practices and the residue of European colonial rule in the region. Responding to the legacy of this particular environment, Nyugen’s work considers imperialist practices of oppression, violence and ideological misnomers. While exposing audiences to concealed narratives that distort reality, he destabilizes constructed frameworks from which this conversation is often held.

Historic Bridgetown Photobook Dear BPS Facebook Members, The executive of BPS is making this appeal to you for your support for the attractively photographed and well scripted Historic Bridgetown Photo Book which has been produced by some of our members. This book was conceived to relate and commemorate the history of our capital city for the benefit all, including visitors to Barbados. It is also a fitting tribute to Bridgetown on this island’s achievement of 50 years of independence. The book currently exists in electronic form and your support is needed to move the project to the next stage of printing. At our AGM held on January 28th. most of the members present agreed to buy one or more copies, in advance, for themselves and as gifts for family and friends overseas. "The first time was historic, this second participation is truly ground-breaking. It is the first time that a country from the Caribbean, aside from the art giant of Cuba, has shown in back to back biennales. Jamaica participated once, and Bahamas once, but up to now Grenada is the only island from the Southern Caribbean to participate. It says a lot about the determination of the artists and the commitment of the Ministry of Culture to once again take on this task of showing Grenada’s art on the world stage. The exhibition will open on 12th May at its Official National Pavilion on 417 Fondemente Zattere and extend through the end of November. The Honourable Senator Brenda Hood as the Minister of Culture appointed Dr. Susan Mains as Commissioner, and Mr. Omar Donia of Contemporary Practices as the Curator. Our Mission To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries. The Role of the NCF The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions. FUNCTIONS of the NCF are: To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government To organize cultural festivals Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression. OBJECTIVES of the NCF are: To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry Rodney Ifill, Cultural Officer Visual Arts 424-0909 ext.234 rodney-ifill@ncf.bb www.ncf.bb Annette Nias Cultural Officer - Film and Photography 424-0909 Ext 238 annette-nias@ncf.bb
