PUBLISHER’S NOTE

ANOTHER FOND FARWELL! The last time I said goodbye was when I first retired in 2014. And here we are again, as I am about to retire for the second time in December, this year.

I want to thank you for all your support and all your kind wishes as I move to another chapter in my life. The last 30+ years on the magazine and 20+ years on our awards programs has been filled with great memories, enduring friendships, amazing clients and much more.

In the last 30 years, we have published over 175 issues of the magazine, awarded over 320 beauty advisors, sales reps, trainers and teams through our COSA Awards, now The Beauty’s Best Awards, and awarded over 200 product awards to our vendor and retail partners. We have accomplished so much and I I’m confident there will be so much more to come.

It’s my hope that the magazine and awards programs will continue for many years after I have left the scene. I, for one, will enjoy watching as a guest at future awards ceremonies and reading each issue of the magazine as an interested reader.

So many thanks must go to you, our readers, because without your passion, determination, and thirst for knowledge, none of this would have been possible. Your support of the magazine is the reason it has survived for over a half a century.

And to my clients, Canada’s beauty vendors and retailers, some of whom I have worked with for over 25 years, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your endless support of our magazine and beauty awards programs over the years. You helped make this journey truly enjoyable.

So, as I take some time now to spend with family and friends and hopefully do a lot more travelling, I’ll be thinking of all the friends I have made in this industry, and I want to wish you the very best for a happy and successful journey in the years ahead.

EDITOR’S LETTER

THIS WAS A FASCINATING YEAR FOR ME. I kept a journal of my days in the universe of beauty – documenting the emotional highs and lows of the ongoing pandemic, the Zoom meetings that are still going strong, and the few real live events, which I enjoy most.

And this year, Cosmetics turned 50! Fifty years in the service of beauty, and more than 30 years under the stewardship of the great Jim Hicks.

I knew Jim back in the days at Rogers, and had the chance of working closely with him since this magazine became digital.

Magazines should be so much more than a vehicle to flog a lipstick or two – although there’s no shame in showcasing beautiful products! But with Jim’s vision, Cosmetics has pushed for a diversity of content and become a bastion of agenda-setting conver sation, showcasing the evolution of the beauty industry. It has held a mirror up to the industry to ask complex, defining questions of how we can all improve and has provided a platform to celebrate talent, craft and community. It is a home for exploring fresh perspectives, communicating in a way that lifts, inspires and empowers consumers.

Jim has always looked ahead to bring together the industry. And under his leader ship, Cosmetics has become, at its heart, an indispensable resource for discovering the very best people, brands, products, trends and ideas today. Working with Jim has been a pleasure and an honour. Because this is his last issue and he is transitioning to his next chapter, I’d like to thank him for everything he brought to beauty! Merci beaucoup, Jim!

SEASON LONG! A glossy pout, as seen on AW22 runways for Dolce & Gabbana and Miu Miu, is trending and it makes for a fun switch-up from matte lippies.

“Glosses can add a kind of fantasy aspect to makeup that can seem very futuristic,” says Toronto-based makeup artist Sheri Stroh. The look is almost foolproof, especially since for mulas have come a long way from the sticky, goopy glosses of the ’90s. Now, there’s a variety of shades and textures, Stroh says, so you can go from com pletely transparent to boldly pigmented. Plus, a gloss won’t dry out your lips the way some matte lipsticks do, especially during cold weather. When choosing a gloss, make sure the formula isn’t too oily, as that can cause colour to migrate. If you want a look that will last longer, Stroh recom mends staining your lips with a matching lipstick, lip liner or lip stain before your gloss. Apply, blot and lightly blend to create a transfer-proof stain that will last through many reappli cations of gloss. — Lora Grady

Blonde Ambition

AS A NOD TO REBELLIOUS PUNK CULTURE, celebs like Kendall Jenner and Victoria Pedretti are making bleached eyebrows a coveted look for winter. Also seen on AW22 runways for Martine Rose, Versace and Marc Jacobs, a blonde brow gives any look an editorial vibe, says Toronto-based makeup artist Simone Otis. “They really open up the eye area, giving you more space to play with.”

If you want to make a real commitment and you want to get the perfect tone and colour, Otis recommends going to a profes sional colourist who can bleach and tone your brows. For a look that washes of, Otis suggests try ing the “blocking” makeup tech nique that many drag artists use.

Start by using a stick of schoolsafe glue to press your eyebrows onto to your face, making them as flat as possible. Next, apply a peachy or orange cream colour to block out any blue tones in the hairs that pop through. Follow up with a layer of foundation, fol lowed by setting powder, and you’ll get the look of freshly bleached brows. — Lora Grady

BACKSTAGE AT BATSHEVA’S SS23 SHOW during New York Fashion Week, models with all kinds of hair types, from closecropped and curly to long and wavy, move from makeup chairs to stylists’ stations. On a wall near the entrance, a mood board displays inspiration with photos of blown-out hair, middle parts and blue-painted skin. Amidst the excited chat ter and buzzing of blow dry ers, one stylist explains the look for the show: “Today we’re working with every model’s natural hair texture.”

That was a main priority for Justine Marjan, TRESemmé’s Global Hairstylist who was in charge of hair for the Batsheva show. When it comes to the biggest hair trends for 2023, Marjan says short cuts, shiny liquid hair and over-the-top hair accessories are in, but the big gest trend is actually originality. “We saw a lot of individuality on the runways this season and allowing each model to express their own personal style,” she says. “This included keeping models’ natural hair texture and enhancing that with styling products to meet their individual hair needs.”

Embracing individuality is always celebrated during Fashion Week, but brands like TRESemmé want to make sure that message is being translated everywhere, all year round. The hair care company recently collaborated with The Representation Project on a study that explored the “double binds” women experience daily. For example, receiving comments that your hair is too frizzy while also receiving messages telling you to rock your curls proudly. The study found that two-thirds of women experience double-bind messages, especially Gen-Z women ages 18 to 24. And 90% of these women report that double binds prevent them from being their authentic self. That’s why TRESemmé launched the “Power Your Style Project” to advocate for women to express their personal style. Look up the hashtag #MyStyleIsMyPower on TikTok, and you’ll find posts that encourage women to embrace their personal style. Get creative with your look this year and check out three of the hottest hairstyles from SS23 runways in NYC.

LOOK #1: THE FLUFFY BOW

Featured at Batsheva, this look leans into the uniqueness and individuality of each model and embraces their natural texture, says Marjan.

STEP 1 : Start by prepping hair with shine serum and then brush through for silky smooth hair with natural movement. If you want additional texture, use a fat iron to create a soft wave.

STEP 2 : Smooth gel through front pieces of hair and gather the sides of hair at the back of the head.

STEP 3 : Secure hair with an elastic and slide the elastic down slightly so the hair sits below the round of the head.

STEP 4 : Finish the look with hair spray and use a use a toothbrush to smooth fy-aways. Add the bow to the back and secure.

Unilever stylist and celebrity hair artist Lacy Redway created this elegant look, which was inspired by Christian Siriano holding his show at Elizabeth Taylor’s townhouse.

STEP 1 : Create a deep side part and apply gel to the front section of the hair, swooping it across the forehead and behind the ears. Use a tail comb to create defned separations across the forehead.

STEP 2 : To add smooth, subtle volume, apply volumizing mousse all over and blow dry on medium heat and high speed to maintain healthy hair and a quick dry.

STEP 3 : Once completely dry, use a straightener at 330 ºF to smooth out the ponytail. Wrap hair onto itself and secure with hair pins.

STEP 4 : Once hair is secured, mist all over using hair spray to set the look in place, focusing on the chignon.

LOOK #3: TEXTURIZED WATER WAVES

This style, created by Redway, complemented the femininity and fuidity of Fe Noel’s collection. The wet-look hair emulates a drenched, wavy texture, which was brought to life throughout the show.

STEP 1 : Begin by sectioning hair into small pieces and applying gel through out. Use a brush to distribute the gel throughout the hair, keeping it close to the head.

STEP 2 : Create a deep side part with the front pieces, dispersing them across the forehead to create those rolling waves. Brush the rest of the hair behind the ears and straight down before wrapping in a hair net and blowing dry using a sock diffuser to avoid frizz.

STEP 3 : Once hair is dry, spray hair spray all over to lock the style in place add shine serum from roots to ends to impart shine and refectivity, bringing that water element to life.

STEP 4 : Working from the left side of the head to the right, weave a wavy braid across the back of the hair, locking the style in with a fnal mist of hair spray.

Elaine Shigeishi’s illustrious career in the cosmetics industry has spanned 35 years.

Starting out at the Fragrance Buying Office for Eaton’s, then Insignia Group (Nina Ricci, Alfred Sung fragrances) and subsequently at Summit Cosmetics (Orlane, Perlier Bath and Body), it was during Elaine’s 16-year tenure at Elizabeth Arden where she cemented her name in the industry. She launched skincare franchises, Ceramide and Prevage, as well as fragrance franchises for Britney Spears and Hilary Duff, managing events and special appearances for Elizabeth Taylor and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Today, Elaine is Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Shiseido Canada’s Skincare Division, where she leads Shiseido Ginza Tokyo, Clé de Peau Beauté and Drunk Elephant brands.

Her many career highlights include the national launch of Shiseido’s iconic booster step, ULTIMUNE Power Infusing Concentrate, Shiseido’s sponsorship of the exhibition of “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors” at the AGO, and Shiseido #ShareBeauty, a national campaign inviting Canadians to send their loved ones a special note telling them why they are beautiful to them.

LE GREEN IMPACT INDEX, UN FORMIDABLE OUTIL

J’ai récemment eu la chance d’assister à une présentation du Groupe Pierre Fabre, ce géant d’envergure mondiale des pro duits dermo-cosmétiques et de santé familiale.

Cette rencontre avait pour but de faire connaître aux intervenants de l’industrie de la beauté un outil novateur créé par le Groupe pour classifer les produits dermocosmétiques de ses marques vendues en pharmacie, parmi lesquelles Avène, Ducray et René Furterer, selon leur performance environnementale et sociétale afn de permettre aux consom mateurs sensibles au respect de la nature et de la société dans son ensemble de faire des choix plus éclairés.

Au total, ce sont 20 critères qui sont passés au crible pour attribuer à chaque produit une

note environnementale et une note sociétale dont la moyenne pondérée est résumée en une lettre : A, B, C ou D. Et c’est du sérieux puisque la rigueur et la valeur du Green Impact Index, premier outil du genre sur le marché, ont été évaluées par l’organisme AFNOR Certifcation, une société française de référence en matière de normes.

Une analyse en 14 critères est faite de la formule, de la fabri cation, de l’emballage et du transport du produit, ce qui permet de lui attribuer sa note environnementale. Sa note sociétale, quant à elle, résulte d’une étude du produit selon 6 critères, parmi lesquels la prove nance, la certifcation biologique et les programmes de respons abilité sociétale des entreprises (RSE).

Des points de bonifcation peuvent ensuite être attribués pour le commerce équitable, la certifcation Origine France Garantie et les produits véganes, la biodégradabilité de la formule, l’empreinte carbone, la consommation responsable d’eau, l’agriculture biologique, diverses certifcations offcielles…

Cette démarche aussi exigeante qu’ambitieuse du Groupe Pierre Fabre pour mesurer l’impact socio-environnemental des produits de beauté et de santé familiale a été mise en place pour permettre à chacun de choisir les siens en toute connaissance de cause. Voilà un pas en avant dans la bonne direction qui change déjà le visage de la beauté !

C’est dans un environnement spacieux et lumineux, à l’occasion d’un petit lunch ofert par l’entreprise québécoise de produits écologiques ATTITUDE , que j’ai assisté au dévoilement de la nouvelle gamme de soins de la peau de la marque et découvert sa charismatique nouvelle égérie !

C’est la comédienne québé coise Ludivine Reding qui est le visage de Oceanly, cette première gamme de soins solides pour le visage qui est formulée avec des ingrédients naturels, sains et ultra performants. Dans un emballage sans plas tique, ces produits certifiés EWG VERIFIED sont créés avec des ingrédients d’origine marine et sont là pour révolu tionner les rituels de soins beauté grâce à leur composition 100 % saine pour le corps et pour la planète.

Des nettoyants aux sérums en passant par les crèmes, masques et écrans solaires, les 19 produits maison dans les gammes Cleanse, Glow, Age, Calm, Matte, Oil et Sun procurent à la peau du visage une hydra tation maximale et donc de l’éclat, la matifient, la protègent, l’unifient et la lissent.

Invitée à expérimenter ces divers produits, j’ai été impres sionnée par leur qualité et leur sensorialité. Ils glissent en efet agréablement sur l’épiderme et lui procurent une souplesse quasi immédiate.

En jasant avec la jolie Ludivine, j’ai été à même de mesurer son enthousiasme à l’égard des nouveaux soins qu’elle promeut : « Nous faisons attention à ce que nous mangeons, mais ce que nous mettons sur notre peau est tout aussi important et c’est ce que la marque de soins ATTITUDE m’a fait réaliser, m’a dit la jeune comédienne. Q : Elle, quel est votre premier souvenir olfactif ?

R : Je me revois toute petite en train de mélanger les parfums de ma grand-mère. Me parfumer me donnait l’impression d’être adulte.

Q : Comment était votre premier parfum de jeune femme et que vous faisait-il ressentir ?

R : Il était extrêmement sucré. Je l’ai porté tout au long de mes années de collège. C’était un parfum d’ado typique et j’en mettais sans doute trop.

Q : Avez-vous déjà utilisé du parfum pour vous mettre dans la peau d’un personnage ?

R : J’ai entendu dire que certains acteurs le font, une idée que je trouve très intéressante. Je n’ai jamais testé cette approche moi-même, mais ce serait chouette de créer un parfum propre à un personnage.

Q : Que représente pour vous la marque Paco Rabanne ?

R : C’est une marque cool et sans chichis. Elle a aussi un petit côté sexy et espiègle que j’afectionne.

Q : Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda et Françoise Hardy ont toutes été muses de Paco Rabanne... Qu’est-ce que ça fait de se joindre à ce casting d’exception ?

R : Oh là là, c’est un grand honneur de figurer parmi ces icônes !

Q : Quelle facette du rôle d’égérie de Fame préférez-vous ?

R : Me démarquer est toujours une obsession. Alors, être égérie de Fame me permet de mettre en avant ma personnalité et mon audace ! Je suis sous le charme de ce parfum comme de toute l’équipe Paco Rabanne !

How honey can help hydrate and plump your complexion this winter

HONEY IS NO STRANGER TO THE SKINCARE WORLD—in fact, it was used as a natural healing remedy in some of the world’s earliest civ ilizations. The ancient Sumerians used it in healing ointments around 2000 B.C., Cleopatra added it to her milk baths, and it was used to clear up blemishes in Ming dynasty-era China. Today, honey is back in the spotlight as beauty brands continue to prioritize natural ingredients. Not only does it feel amazing on skin— honey could also help you achieve a softer, more hydrated complexion this winter.

“Studies show that honey ofers many skincare benefits, including antimicrobial and antioxidant prop erties. It’s also a potent emollient and humectant,” says Dr. Geeta Yadav, a Toronto-based dermatologist and founder of Facet Dermatology. In the short term, she says, adding honey into your skincare routine will help plump up parched skin by drawing in hydration and sealing in moisture. “Over time, you may see a subtle improvement in the appear ance of signs of aging, as honey’s antioxidant benefits protect skin from free radical damage,” says Dr. Yadav.

She adds that sustainability is a huge priority for brands right now, and as long as beekeepers properly care for their hives, harvesting ingredients like honey, propolis and royal jelly is a sustainable practice.

Guerlain has prioritized honey as a key ingredient over the last decade with its Abeille Royale line of skin care. “As nature’s great alchemists, bees produce some of the most efective skin-healing substances,” says Maxime Poulin, North America education and event director for Guerlain. The honey used in the Abeille Royale range is sourced from sustainable farms in France that are protected UNESCO biospheres. “We harvest in the tradi tional method with complete respect to nature,” Poulin adds. The brand plans to continue researching and using honey in its hero products.

“Since it’s best known for its moistur izing properties, I recommend using honey in a mask or intensive nourishing treatment,” says Dr. Yadav. Honey can also help treat psoriasis, dermatitis and other conditions characterized by dryness. It’s not a cure-all though, Dr. Yadav points out, so consult with your dermatologist before using anything new.
