LEATRICE EISEMAN, Executive Director of The Pantone Colour Institute, explains that this season's hottest colours "combine a level of comfort and relaxation with sparks of energy that encourage and uplift our moods." Topping the list, marigold. The warm shade of orange infused with yellow and bolder variations of the colour orange proved to be a staple in runway collections for Valentino, Gucci, and Versace, to name drop a few. The hard-to-miss hue—there's a reason it's the premium choice in construction site safety wear—has also been a prime pick on red carpets and our fave in fresh beauty looks. At Valentino, orange was rendered into statement pieces like a boxy duster coat, as seen on musician H.E.R. at the virtual Golden Globes, and a show-stopping fluorescent orange taffeta skirt, worn by Zendaya at the Critics Choice Awards. Gucci offered bursts of orange within prints and patterns, and in the Harry Stylesapproved jacket, worn as he accepted his Grammys. At Versace, bright flowy gowns and ocean-inspired prints made a splash. Spotted on the lips of celebs and on makeup artists Insta-feeds, after a year of hiding pouts under masks, the hue's optimistic energy is more than welcome. Instead of sleek, highlighted angles, this look is about a lit-from-within glow, achieved by mixing skincare with makeup. M.A.C Cosmetics global senior artist Dominic Skinner used the look on models at Richard Quinn’s show during AW20 London Fashion Week. “Cloud skin is about a soft, blended approach rather than colour blocking or deliberate highlight and contour,” says Stéphane Côté, senior national artist for M.A.C. “The secret is in using sheer layers of whatever product you choose.” Her approach: Start with moisturizer, then add a swipe of concealer and foundation where necessary (apply sparingly). Next, add a light touch of blush, contour and highlight. “Finish with a sheer foundation to create the cloudy effect and give skin an even, creamy finish,” she says. Then, Côté says, lightly powder the T-Zone if needed. — Lora Grady

vintage, rejoice: The shag is back! As seen on models at SS21 shows for Balmain, Hermès and Valentino, this look is going strong for summer. The mullet, the shag’s more daring big sister, has also returned chicer than ever. (Hey, Rihanna!) But if you’re not ready for that level of commitment, the shag is a softer version. “The cut works on every face shape because there are no hard, definite lines,” says Toronto-based celebrity hair stylist Justin German. It’s best for straight or wavy textures but works with curls, too. “The look is all about shattered texture,” he says. For medium to thick hair, he recommends a razor cut and for fine hair, scissors and point cutting. When it comes to styling, reach for a saltwater spray or texture spray and volumizing mousse. invest more time, energy and money into at-home self-care this summer, it makes sense that scalp care is trending. In fact, there are over 12,000 web searches for scalp scrub in the U.S. every month and interest has grown over 40 percent since last year. “A bath with a hair mask and a scalp massage can be so therapeutic to the body and soul,” says Toronto-based celebrity hairstylist Jukka. Plus, he says, proper scalp care can also help hair growth, in addition to minimizing dryness, flaking, oiliness and buildup. That’s why powerhouse skincare brands including the Body Shop, Neutrogena and Drunk Elephant are jumping on board. Caring for our scalps should be treated as an extension of our skincare routines, says Dr. Rolanda Wilkerson, a principal scientist for Procter & Gamble. It’s the key to a head of healthy, beautiful locks. “Think of a plant,” she says. “It needs healthy soil to grow. The same goes for hair; it needs a healthy scalp.” Dandruff, one of the most common scalp issues, is caused when the microbe Malassezia Globosa (found on all scalps) interacts with natural oils from the head and causes a reaction. A person’s response is dependent on genetics and

the sensitivity of their scalp, says Dr. Wilkerson, but symptoms include flakes, itchiness and dryness. Even if someone doesn’t have dandruff, they may still be dealing with scalp issues: Products that prolong salon results (think dry shampoo) can cause buildup over time, says Kevin Truong, national pro beauty educator for Sephora Canada. That buildup can lead to irritation like dryness and excess sebum. Over-washing and scratching the scalp can damage hair follicles, leading to breakage and hair loss— so it’s important to address issues right away. “Categorizing scalp concerns the way we do for skincare has created a great conversation, with everyone’s individual wants and needs being addressed,” says Truong. “There have been impressive innovations in textures: thinner serums and oils, thicker textures like creams and balms, and physical exfoliants for a fully sensorial experience.” Simply put: Caring for your scalp is now as personal as caring for your skin and will boost the effects of the rest of your routine. “For some, it may mean less shampooing,” says Truong, “for others it means different styling methods with better and longer-lasting results.”

LE 1921 — L’ E N T R E V U E PUISANT UNE RICHE INSPIRATION dans l’art

de l’alchimie, la prestigieuse maison de mode Gucci lançait en 2019 la gamme de luxe The Alchemist’s Garden, dont le nom (Le Jardin de l’alchimiste) évoque la parfumerie de niche. Pour élaborer cette série subliminale, Gucci a fait appel au parfumeur espagnol Alberto Morillas, qui sous la direction artistique d’Alessandro Michele a composé une collection d’acqua profumate. Les « eaux parfumées » de cette gamme personnalisable sont conçues pour permettre des combinaisons modulables à l’envi. Cette année, un nouvel opus est né ! Le 1921, élaboré en hommage

au 100e anniversaire de la marque. Voici mon tête-à-tête avec le maître parfumeur, qui décrit l’essence de ce tout récent opus. Q : COMMENT ON S’Y PREND POUR IMAGINER UN PARFUM QUI RENDE HOMMAGE AUX 100 ANS D’UNE MARQUE AUSSI RÉPUTÉE QUE GUCCI ?

Avec la maison Gucci et Alessandro Michele, nous écrivons une belle histoire olfactive depuis quelques années déjà et œuvrer à la création de ce parfum anniversaire a été inspirant et excitant ! Nous avons choisi de rendre hommage à cette maison de couture centenaire avec un parfum qui mette en valeur sa belle origine. R :

Q : LE 1921 A UNE SIGNATURE SOPHISTIQUÉE. COMMENT DÉFINIRIEZ-VOUS SA COMPOSITION ?

Le Limone Cedrato est un agrume au parfum vibrant et zesté plus frais et plus floral que celui du citron et qui rappelle la facette boisée de la verveine. Nous avons élaboré 1921 autour de la fraîcheur pétillante de ce cedrato qui, mélangée à la floralité verte du néroli et à la signature sophistiquée de la mousse de chêne, résulte en une eau de Cologne élégante et intemporelle. Q : RACONTEZ-NOUS LE PROCESSUS DE CRÉATION DE 1921. QUELLE EST LA DYNAMIQUE DE CRÉATION ENTRE ALESSANDRO MICHELE ET VOUS ?

La marque voulait, avec cette fragrance, rendre hommage à l'héritage de la Maison Gucci et en particulier à la ville où elle est née : Firenze. J'ai donc créé un parfum autour d'un ingrédient qui est un emblème de la ville, le Limone Cedrato. Pour ce qui est du processus créatif qui nous lie, Alessandro Michele et moi, eh bien il est unique. À titre de styliste et directeur de création de Gucci, il partage avec moi son idée et ce qu'il projette pour un parfum, puis j'essaie de transcrire ses mots et les émotions qu'il m’a décrites en propositions olfactives. Chaque parfum résonne différemment sur l’épiderme de chacun. La collection The Alchemist’s Garden est centrée sur les émotions et chacun des parfums qui la composent suscitera des souvenirs différents chez les personnes qui le sentent. 1921 est un concentré de positivisme et d'énergie, il crée à coup sûr l’effet d’un rayon de lumière même dans la plus sombre des journées. Q : QU’EST-CE QUI FAIT, SELON VOUS, QUE CERTAINS PARFUMS S’INSCRIVENT DANS LE TEMPS ET PAS D’AUTRES ?

Pour être intemporel, un parfum doit avoir une signature distinctive, une personnalité reconnaissable entre toutes. Il doit apporter à la personne qui le porte le sentiment de constituer un avantage, un « plus », quelque chose d’à la fois compréhensible et magique. Et bien sûr, il doit être totalement en phase avec la marque, le nom et le concept qui ont mené à son existence. R :

culture. Aujourd'hui, on constate un engouement pour l'authenticité, pour ce qui est naturel et qui apporte du confort. Nous connaissions déjà ces tendances, mais elles sont devenues centrales alors que nous traversons cette crise complexe et éprouvante. Je suis très fier de mon travail, notamment des parfums tels que CK One, Acqua di Gió, Daisy de Marc Jacobs, Flower by Kenzo ou Gucci Mémoire d'une Odeur. Cependant, vous savez, je ne passe jamais beaucoup de temps à considérer mes réalisations passées. Je suis toujours à travailler sur le parfum d'aujourd'hui et celui de demain. Ma plus grande réussite est de faire encore aujourd'hui ce que j'aime faire et de vivre pleinement ma passion. R :

Q : SELON VOUS, QUELLE SERA L’ODEUR DU FUTUR ?

Je crois que nous n'avons pas encore découvert le parfum de l'avenir. WATERMELON IS A SUMMERTIME ESSENTIAL —no beach picnic is

complete without it ( just ask Harry Styles!) The refreshing fruit has also been used in Asian cultures for centuries to help tackle inflammation and redness. And over the last few years, watermelon has become one of the hottest ingredients in skincare worldwide. Since Glow Recipe launched its bestselling Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask back in 2017, watermelon has appeared in ingredient lists from brands including Milk, Sephora, Drunk Elephant and more. The fruit (a cousin of the cucumber and squash) of 92 percent water, so it’s hardly surprising that the beauty industry is harnessing its hydrating powers. Within the beauty aisles, “Watermelon is quite a new ingredient for skincare,” says Dr. Benjamin Barankin, dermatologist and medical director of the Toronto Dermatology Centre. Its nutritional benefits— including vitamins A, B6 and C— may also benefit our complexions. Another element found in the fruit is citrulline, an amino acid that is believed to exfoliate and improve circulation. “Topically, watermelon

seems to reduce inflammation and boost collagen,” says Dr. Barankin. “Vitamins A, C and E have antioxidant properties that appear to help with complexion vibrance and firmness.” Watermelon also contains lycopene, an antioxidant that has antiinflammatory, astringent effects (it’s also what gives watermelon its vibrant pink colour), says Dimitra Davidson, president and COO of Indeed Labs. Thanks to these allstar components, watermelon helps to reduce the appearance of pores, fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. “The high water content also makes watermelon great for hydration,” says Davidson. Watermelon can be used at any step during your skincare routine and can benefit varying skin types. The anti-inflammatory properties make it ideal for sensitive skin, says Davidson, while those with acne-prone skin can benefit from the astringent properties. Remember that the higher the higher watermelon is on the l of ingredients, the higher its proportion in the product itself; if the active ingredient is listed near the end, then its just marketing.
