KAMUI COSPLAY

P

ropmaking is a side part of being a cosplayer; when anyone tries to improve their skills, making props is the next step. Armors require a more advanced knowledge level because of its difficulty, and because all the pieces have to look well arranged in the body. One of the best references of this kind of work is Kamui Cosplay from Germany, she´s a gamer girl and an awesome cosplayer. She has been cosplaying for 10 years now, and her first outfit was the Great Saiyaman from Dragonball Z as a trully DB fan. This is a curious fact since most people know her for the beautiful armors and game characters she makes. “I prefer costumes from video games like World of Warcraft, Diablo III or Aion now. I’ve lost passion for anime and manga, it’s more because it’s easier to work with three dimensional references, because of their huge amount of details and for my love for these games,” she tells us. She felt in love with armors and prop making when she created her first costume from World of Warcraft in 2005: a beautiful Druid Tier 1 with her snake staff and her leafy cauldrons. Kamui thinks she is no good at sewing, even though we have seen that her fabric work is nicely done. ¨I’ve noticed that I have a lot of fun in creating three dimensional costume parts, working with different materials like Wonderflex and Worbla and that I just like to experiment a lot.¨ We have seen many different armor designs on Kamui´s tutorials on her blog; she chooses her characters based on the design and the level of difficulty. The references are the most important point for her costume decisions. ¨I prefer characters with many details, huge armor parts and highlights like glowing parts or complicated weapons.¨ It´s

CQ Magazine asked Kamui “How can you describe your creative process from the idea to the presentation of your work in a convention?” This is her answer:

Correspondent Random Question

“My creativity process is pretty hard to describe. Sometimes I know exactly which materials I need to order, which steps are necessary, what and when I have to do something and how every single part of a costume will look like in the end. Despite of that, sometimes I have no idea about anything. In both ways, the costume seems to grow and develop by its own. It’s just like walking through a dream and seeing myself doing something, but in reality I never know what will happen next. It’s just like if somebody else controlled me and only the few inspiration flashes I have in my dreams would tell me how it will look like the next day.”

Worbla or Wonderflex are marvelous materials to use on any armor set, though they are a bit difficult to obtain in distant countries different than the countries in which they are manufactured. For most people, it is better to try some other materials which are easier to obtain. Kamui has many tutorials and the working process of Worbla or wonderflex,

complicated to personalize any game character because we can´t appreciate as much of their personality as we can with other types of characters (like the ones in graphic novels or animes), so for this cosplayer, doing her homework and researching the story behind the character is important when choosing a design. ¨Research simply helps me to do the right posing and acting. However, most of my costumes are real characters that I play with in video games in my free time, ¨ says Kamui.

¨Not just because I’ve never worked with it and I don’t have the right tools to do so, but also because it’s much easier to work with fake materials like Wonderflex and Worbla. Most of the armor parts don’t really look like metal. They often have a weird design and a color scheme that looks like an armor but not like any kind of metal I know. It would also look just wrong if I would use real metal for one of my costumes.¨

Materials have evolved so much that metal materials are no longer needed to achieve real armor piece sets; some people really like how original material come out and they obviously know how to use them. but this is what she recommends if they are not available: ¨I know many people who found different materials for their armor parts. Some of them worked with card board, some with foam, and one even worked with the plastic of paint buckets. Wonderflex and Worbla are not THE must have armor materials, but they simply are comfortable to work with. After some research, it’s possible to find many other ways to create a nice armor related costume.¨

INTERNATIONAL INTERVIEW ¨One of my most memorable moments happened at Blizzcon 2009 in Anaheim, California. Many of my costumes are pretty huge and it’s extremely exhausting to wear them for longer than for 6 hours. But at Blizzcon 2009, I decided to wear my Druid Tier 6 which needed a full body paint. I woke up at 5 am and was ready at 9 am in the morning because the body paint took such a long time. However, at the event, every minute I spent getting ready was worth it and the first day was just more than awesome. But sadly, the costume contest started at 8 pm and the dance contest I also wanted to participate in started at around 10 pm. It was already very exhausted to keep up until the costume contest, but I don’t remember anything of the dance contest. I don’t remember a single minute of when I did my Nightelf dance; I have no idea of how I left the stage and I still wonder how I was able to come back to the hotel room. All I really have is the video on Youtube from the dance contest. And it was pretty scary to get my memory only from this source…¨

She describes her working place as a huge chaos desperately squeezed in some wooden racks. Materials are displaced all over the place full of acrylic paint, glue, paper, fabric, modeling clay and many other things. Over the years she has also collected many tools. ¨My favorites ones are surely my hot glue gun, my hot air gun and my soldering gun. My most hated tool is my sewing machine. It’s often very dirty, chaotic and messy in my workplace, but it’s a space where I can enjoy the smell of glue and resin (and I try not to get high of it!) and the sound of some chilling music or the crazy laugh of Spongebob.¨ When costumes and props are ready, is time to travel. One of my cosplay friends invited me to the Blizzard Headquarter and there I met not just Glenn Rane, the head artist of Blizzard, but also Wei Wang aka Glowei. For me, Wei Wang is much more than just an artist; he is an amazing source of inspiration. Two of his artworks were already the base for two of my costumes, my Wizard and my Barbarian, both from Diablo III, and three other of his artworks will still get a real life version. BEFORE THE TRIP: ARRANGEMENTS Before you take the plane, as with any other trip, you have to do some planning. There are some important aspects: the budget, the ticket, the lodging, the itinerary and the passport. The later means the passport and all the necessary visas to travel to our destination. Some countries require a visa to enter to Japan. Curiously, to obtain the visa you need all the other important things I mentioned earlier. In most cases, the visa process is simple and fast. Check in Wikipedia if your country needs a visa to Japan (wiki: visa policy of Japan).

The trip budget is the most “scary” thing since it tells us exactly how much we have to save. Leaving out the plane ticket and the lodging, which are expensive on their own, a decent budget for 20 days is about US$1,200. This includes meals, transport, some otaku souvenirs and the entrance (Part 1 of 3) tickets to some touristic sights. Despite of this, Japan is a country with convenient prices when he dream of any Japanophile (word used to compared with other countries. describe lovers of the Japanese culture, which includes otakus, cosplayers and any other Japanese The itinerary is where you plan what you are going freak) is to travel to the land of the Rising Sun. In this first part, I’ll explain how I the tourist visa, needs to know exactly how much traveled to Japan and the myths and truths about time you will stay in Japan and will grant you a visa traveling to this extraordinary country. that will work only for this specific amount of time. An itinerary will also help you know what you are going to do and how much will you spend each day. My advice, depending on your budget, is to separate one day for each district or city. The plane ticket is another important aspect and one of the steps previous to the visa. You don’t have to buy the ticket, but you have to make a reservation and you must include it in the documents for the visa application. It is better to buy the ticket directly with the airline and not with a travel agency. Some airlines have better policies for penalties and changes in the dates. Many travel agencies and travel web pages have expensive fees. You should buy the entire travel with the same airline or with airlines in the same alliance. You will avoid problems with connections and baggage. It is also important to buy the ticket at least 3 months before because it will be significantly cheaper than buying it a month before.

Bring only enough clothes for 9 days (even if you will stay for more than that). Hostels and youth hotels have coin machines to wash your dirty clothes.

expensive. There are also some long term leases that can be cheaper, but you must stay at least for a month. If you are willing to pay less, think about sharing a room or staying in a shared room (4 or more), though some people feel uncomfortable sharing the room with a stranger. A good price for lodging should be no more than US$900 for a month.

I do not recommend bringing these things to Japan: manga and anime (even worse something illegal), sharp things, food... In Japan you can buy a lot of amazing things, your baggage will explod. There are a lot of otaku things that in Japan are cheaper than in other parts of the world.

International Interview

If you are a cosplayer, you can bring a cosplay to take a walk in Akihabara, Harajuku or Odaiba, normal places for cosplayers. You should bring some cosplay that is not to elaborate but that is worth presenting.

WHAT TO BRING AND WHAT NOT TO BRING

Random Question

I strongly recommend bringing a big luggage and your hand luggage, like a big backpack. I also recommend bringing a laptop (inside the backpack), since you can find free Internet in your hostel and in other places. The prices for three to four hours in a cybercafĂŠ are about US$8 (though the service is amazing).

owadays, a musical gender that is making a huge impact in the world is k-pop. In many countries we see how this gender is attracting more and more fans, who not only settle with buying their records and their merchandise but who also imitate their style and choreographies. In this occasion, CQ Magazine brings you a group that represents k-pop in its pure essence: Red Desire. Since their debut in 2010 at the Expo Guadalajara, on the event “Concomics”, this Mexican dance cover girl group formed by Bren, Aini, Shot, Ayane y Hannah has amazed the k-pop world not only because of the talent of each of their members but also for the professionalism and charisma that they convey every time that they go up on stage or release a new video. The idea of creating this

group was Ayane’s, a cosplayer and longtime lover of k-pop who wanted to create a girl dance cover group. She looked for Bred, who Ayane knew that danced and that also liked k-pop. Between the two of them, they started looking for new members with two things in mind: they had to like K-pop and they had to love to dance. This is how Red Desire began. After the initial idea was established by Ayane and Bren that met by internet, Aini got in the group through a casting. Bren and Shot knew each other from College; at the beginning, Shot was only meant to help them on one choreography (Be my baby) but fortunately, she decided to stay in the group permanently. Hannah was a member of a different group of dance cover and everyone knew her because they had shared the stage with her in the past. After Hannah’s group had to split up, she was invited to take part of RD. When they had to choose a name, the girls tried to choose from a number of options but none convinced them, so they tried with names, emotions and random colors. At some point, the words Red and Desire remained. The meaning that each one of them gave to those two words was the key point that made them choose them as the perfect combination for their name; this two words represent femininity and strength for them.

They had the members and the name, the only thing that was missing was the chance to present themselves in front of an audience. The doors to perform at Concomics opened and they had a month to prepare. In this occasion, they performed ‘Magic’ from Secret, ‘Bad Girl Good Girl’ from Miss A, ‘Huh’ from 4 minute, among others from BoA, Hyuna, Hiory; each member had a small solo. Little inconvenients never lack and Bren, for example, had two problems: the cab she was on crashed, and when she got to the convention, she realized that her outfit for the presentation was too big and she had to cut her favorite pants to perform.

S HOT P HOTO BY MO R KO

For their live performances and recordings of new videos, RD first takes into account the time for their presentation, how much it has to last, the day of the event and from there, they start thinking about the set list. Some of their favorite bands are 2ne1, Miss A, 4minute, T-ara, Teen Top, Girls Generation - SNDS, Sistar, F(x), Boa, Kara, Taeyang, Se7en, BigBang, Shinee, SuJu, Wonder girls, Beast, Exid, Evol and others. When the set list is ready, the members of RD divide the choreographies, which used to be prepared by Bren before everyone started to help. How fast they can learn a choreography depends a lot on how difficult the song and the steps moves are; there are demanding songs that require more practice, but usually each member tries to arrive to the practice with previous knowledge of the choreography. From there, it takes them from about a day to a week to learn a full routine, without taking into account the time they take to polish and unify the steps and the practice in their free time.

International Interview

Since that day, this group of girls started to get noticed and performed in various conventions, like in almost all editions of the GDL Concomics since 2010 and in Concomics Vallarta. Other conventions they have participate in are Comictlan, Comagon, Kimera, Mangatron and Shiroitsuki; they have also participated in competitions like Kpop Mx, Concomics’ Best Dance Crew and Talk to me in Korean, at the Shiroirtsuki Café. They took part in the “Korean Music Festival” organized in association with the Embassy of Korea in Guadalajara.

Cosplay helped defining herself as a human being, later developing herself as a social person as being part of the otaku community and meet people that now are her great friends. Nowadays, cosplay has acquired a different function, as her job is always involved with the suffering of the people; it has become a good way to relax and relief herself with her friends. What makes us ask: what do her colleagues think about her hobby? “The doctors usually have a big range of interests, as I say, they are necessary for the mental health. If they respect mine, I will respect theirs”.

“Under the costume I know who I am.” Taty says that she doesn’t have a fan club, but she really has a lot of people who admire her work. There are people that have supported her work a lot, whom have been with her since the beginning and others that she has found in the way. We hope that she will continue being a worthy representative of the Ecuadorian cosplay and that her future plans will come true.

ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED Gamer section with opinions, news and more! Greetings Gamers! Today I’m bringing you an article kind of different from the last two that I’ve done. All the staff sat down and thought about new ideas and in expanding our topics, that’s why we added one section of games because Cosplayers are also Gamers. S O L I D S Q UA L L < V E N E Z U E L A >

I want you to remember those years when you started playing videogames, that season when most of the videogames which were violent were demonized, even more than now. This happened because of many reasons, but the main was that the videogames those days were focused in the “gore” (bloody stuff), the ones which didn’t have a real censorship or a classification according to the age. After that, we were able to find war games which didn’t add anything especial to your daily life. What I really want to say in these paragraphs are the virtues and benefits of the videogames in our lives. For this, I have spoken with three beautiful gamers, very good friends of mine, and who are going to tell us a little about their early days as gamers and all the good experiences that videogames have given to them and how they were able to apply them in their lives.

red of playing. With the time, my brother taught me how to play some simple games like Pacman, Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Contra, Ninja Gaiden and some other unforgettable classics. I started to win confidence to play and had fun with my brother. Time passed by, and Nintendo 64 arrived to my house, which is still my favorite game console! My favorite videogame was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time, which I played all, by myself without the help of my brother. That was my favorite game and it will be forever, its story, the way how you are able to play it, the quests, the character (which I just love it), everything is incredible and I can say that is one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. I always searched the opportunity to play it (I remember once when I was with fever and I didn’t go to high school, but I stood up to play the Temple of Water because that was the last place where I left the game). It’s just one of my greatest memories of my childhood and one of the first experiences that I had as a gamer.

Videogames have brought some benefits in my life, starting with the imagination. I was always good with creative things and imagination when I was supposed to draw or design. Videogames also helped me to learn a little of English (I remember that I used to have a dictionary with me each time that I was playing in case that I didn’t understand something). I remember Belle Sellene as a kid, that I tried to do things pretty well because I admire Link and I wanted to be as him, that’s why I Hi there! CORRESPONDENT Interviews and news from our collaborators from another cities and countries Greetings dear readers of CQ Magazine! In this issue we meet a new contributor to the magazine. Is Alexander Peña, founder and leader of La Cofradía; a Colombian Steampunk crew and president of the Latinamerican Community of SteamALEXANDER PEÑA <COLOMBIA> punk. We present a coverage on the experience of La Cofradía in the SOFA 2012 (Hall Leisure and Fantasy) written by Alexander himself.

Stories About Heros The ‘Hall of Fun and Fantasy, more known in Spanish as SOFA (Salón del Ocio y la Fantasía), is the biggest fair of entertainment in Colombia that is supported by many creative industries. This fair gives the opportunity to the people who go to it, to have fun with internet, multimedia, videogames, fantastic literature, Asian and Western illustrations and comics, science fiction, collectable and radio-control toys , role and strategy games, body art and contemporaneous circus, cabaret, martial arts, visual tendencies and also cosplay, between others. Every year, there are around 30.000 visitors and many expositors and international guests. For every edition of this amazing fair, we, the people who are part of “La Cofradia”, a group formed by many leaders in different areas, work many months developing some projects to show in this especial Hall of fans. Normally, we plan everything with one year of anticipation and we get very excited with the idea of our next project.

34 CQ MAGAZINE

The Process The ideas appear all of the sudden; one day we are at home watching a certain TV program and then we get our next idea, or we are gathered for any reason and a group plan just wildly appears. After discussing the ideas about the project, we manage to reach to an agreement: “for this SOFA 2012 edition, we are going to be superheroes” The Cofradia is a group of 23 people, which some of them are dedicated to Steampunk. Steampunk is an artistic and sociocultural movement in which it develops in the environment where steam technology is still a main resource, but also science fiction and fantasy have their room. The name for this is retro futurism; which is an artistic expression that values the past and brings it to some utopian descriptions about the imaginary worlds and combines them with the classic world from the industrial revolution with the modern imaginary technology based in the steam machines.

Tips & Tricks

We decided to combine modern comic heroes with some of this Steampunk area. The first thing that we do is drawing the ideas so we can have an idea of how are we going to look like and putting all the details in each of the parts that we have thought about. After that, from this model we start to think about how much money we need to make this possible and build every character correctly to blend together these two worlds, Steampunk and cosplay.

Correspondent

We try to take care of every single detail and we are very strict with each other so everything will be done perfectly. We make very resistant costumes so they can endure. The people who take pictures with us or the people who are just walking around us, usually by accident can harm our costumes. Also, our costumes need to bear the rain or any other type of problems. Our costumes not only give the idea of being armors, they really are.

Maybe the biggest difficulty has been that most of the things that we needed were shipped from other countries, and we had to wait more than a month to get them all. When we arrived, the reaction of the people was immediate. We had a great welcome from the people who were there, who were surrounding us and were taking pictures of us. Some people were even running from far away to come closer to us and take pictures. From that moment and the rest of the fair, every second was valuable. We didn’t have the chance to rest and we were trying to pose as much as we could for the pictures that the people were taking of us. For being able to arrive to the lounge it took us a couple of hours and it was already night time. The people didn’t allow us to walk more than two steps without taking

When everything was ready, we put everything inside the car and we parked in our spot that was 10 minutes away from the place, which was offering tons of parking spaces. We changed into our outfits near the car and we noticed that people who were strangers to the event were looking at us with curiosity. When we were almost ready, they took a couple of pictures of us while we were walking to Corferias (the place where SOFA was having place). Many people recognized us immediately, something that flattered us a lot because many people weren’t aware about the fair that was going on.
