INTERNATIONAL INTERVIEW In this section you will meet many personalities in the cosplay world

PATY & API

T

he “World Cosplay Summit” (WCS) started at the beginning of 2005 in Osu, Nagoya- Japan with the objective of gathering young people from different countries that share a same language called cosplay. On this world championship, the couples are judged based on the quality of their costumes in addition with their performance on stage. Each country has their own preliminary contests in which they decide the couple that will represent them. This contest has already taken place and in this opportunity we can share with you the experiences of the Mexican representatives Abril Zaragoza (Api Cosplay) and Patricia Perez (Paty Cosplay), who are fighting against the clock in order to have all set for this magnum event. Mexicans residents of Guadalajara, Api and Paty have 11 and 10 years respectively doing cosplay, for them is an amusing hobby that they enjoy a lot; they decided to be contestants in the WCS mainly because of the influence of Api who had been trying

for years to convince Paty to participate, but she didn’t want to, because that requires lots of effort, dedication, time, budget, and will. Before a small participation in a city event, she got convinced that it was going to be fun. “It doesn’t matter if we win or not, we will leave everything and we’ll enjoy our best”.

“We really admire each one of the participants, a couple had an amazing make up, other amazing scenography, costumes, performance, personality, enthusiasm, etc. It was a parade of magnificent works”

For them, being able to represent their country is a mixture of feelings, it’s so exciting but at the same time, it’s a big responsibility, even though their enthusiasm over comes the stress. On top of all,

CQ Interview

Their performance was about to begin, they had all the public, judges, cameras, pointing at them, the moment that they had been waiting for was there, and they did it, they gave it all in that decisive moment, even though there was a malfunction, because of their effort, no one even noticed it, and with all of these, after the deliberation of the jury Api and Paty became the Mexican representatives for the WCS 2012!, Paty told us that in that moment she just felt really happy , “Actually, I don’t even know how to explain that feeling in words, personally I just wanted to hug Api that was the responsible for all of this”.

The participation of the other contestants fascinated them, “Cosplayers now at the Mexican WCS are giving more passion to their costumes and performances, the level of the Mexican cosplay is getting better and better, we really admire each one of the participants, a couple had an amazing make up, other amazing scenography, costumes, performance, personality, enthusiasm, etc. It was a parade of magnificent works”, they said.

Tips & Tricks

And the day came, in February of this year the WCS Mexico took place, and a total of 20 couples were the chosen ones to participate and had the chance to become the representatives of their country in Nagoya. Paty had the idea of taking pictures, videos, and talk with the other contestants, but instead of that, because of the nervousness she just sat next to Api and their scenography to get concentrated. In that way, they were able to remember and meditate about the reason why they were there, thinking on

no matter what would happen, they will enjoy the experience and be satisfied for getting that far and for having the opportunity to show their routine that had cost them a lot of effort .

International Interview

The characters which they chose to participate with in this event were Taki and Tipheret Tira of the game Soul Calibur, that in their own words “fits like a glove”, Paty likes a lot the mysterious and mature characters and if it’s a ninja, it’s a lot better. With Taki, she visualizes a more playful representation that will be fun to perform, on the other side Api likes better the dynamic characters, Tira has a double personality so fascinating and intriguing that Api loves to personify, not to mention the sort of Hula Hoop weapon that gives something extra and an original sense to their performance.

INTERNATIONAL INTERVIEW they are receiving the help, support, and advices of their friends, colleagues, other cosplayers, family and even people from the outside, from people that they will never have imagined to receive any kind of support, and for that reason, they are extremely grateful and they are preparing themselves for their trip that will be this 26 of July.

Now they are supporting them a lot, they now know the commitment that they have and they try not to leave them alone. Before finishing, our interviewees wanted to give a message to all the cosplayers that would like to get involved in this adventure “although it sounds trivial, the most important thing is to have fun, make decisions with confidence and enjoy them, play to be your favorite character and be happy with it. SONY MUSIC RECORDS

If you want to talk about current influential bands of music in Japan, Supercell is one of the bands that has soon began to be recognized inside and outside the Asian country. Supercell is a group that started as a doujin artist in 2007, whose leader is the composer Ryo, known for writing songs made with the help of the Vocaloids’ program and whose songs are uploaded to the site Nico Nico Douga. One of his most famous doujins was the song “Melt” of the famous virtual pop artist Hatsune Miku, and one of his most recognized compositions as a band is the famous song for Black Rock Shooter. Currently, Supercell has two vocalists who were chosen through auditions, Koeda who is 15, and Chelly who is 17 years old. or our magazine release, the staff decided to make an On-line contest on our Fan Page in Facebook. Each contestant sent us their photos and they were published on the event’s album for the joy of the attendants and their comments were also shared. We had cosplayers from different continents, and even if we didn’t share the same language this interesting hobby joined us. That was one of the objectives of the event: make friendship bonds all around the World.

After a difficult deliberation it was determined that Gabriela Hoyos from Peru, Sasa Twins from Mexico, Livia Viziten from Romania, Inês Gomes from Portugal and Airi Rayna from France were our 5 finalists. It is a pleasure and a great honor for us to announce that Inês Gomes is the absolute winner of the International Contest Cover of the first edition in CQ Magazine! Meet the members of Cosplayers Quito

KAZE Kaze is a well-known cosplayer and has an active blog since she started doing cosplay. She is from Taiwan but she has been living in Ecuador for a couple of years. She is a member of Cosplayers Quito. She is also the star model of the front page of our magazine in Spanish. She studies Medicine in a well-known university here and that takes quite a lot of her free time, because, as you all know, Medicine is a much sacrificed career. Even though, she manages to do cosplay, makes her own accessories with a lot of effort and battles with her suits. Though her knowledge in sewing is basic, she has done some dresses and school uniforms. She admires people who are involved in cosplay and make their own suits and accessories, such as Alodia, Kaname, Chise, Annie and Tenshi no Sekai who are wellknown around the world. “With a lot of patience, I put together every piece by hand and as you know, sewing by hand is always painful. You constantly poke your fingertips when you are making suits and especially if the cloth is plastic” For the people who follow her blog, it is known that she loves to do photo-shoots in her house and that she has adapted a specific place for this. Each time, we can find some delightful videos with extremely well done musical and visual compositions. Also, she writes summaries of some products as make up and wigs for cosplay. here are many things that are part of an impressive cosplay, but the first thing that is needed is patience. If you aren’t patient you can tend to desperate and the results may not be what you were expecting and also, probably you will lose the love that you had at the beginning while starting your project. We must realize that cosplay is a hobby that, if you don’t love it, at the end of the day you will ask yourself why you have been suffering and being in misery for.

Breathlessaire <USA>

I love cosplay, but only when I don’t have to do it on a rush. First, you must take your time to choose the materials, the wig and accessories. Then, you can start with the costume and if something isn’t going well, you can breathe, step back and do it again. When you are calm, you can deal with the problem and see it in other different perspective. When you finish it, you can wear the costume for some photo-shoots. Don’t forget that for having a good picture, you must take your time, too. At the end, every step needs time and patience.

Finally, for being a good cosplayer you must be humble above all, respect each other even though there are tiny differences and always see something positive in each person, in that way, we will have an environment full of harmony. Each cosplayer has their own style and it isn’t good to be bragging about what’s good in yours and what is bad in others.

I

think that the bases for being a cosplayer are effort and love. First you must love the character and if you are planning on representing it, you should give your best in every single detail: the costume, acting and accessories. It means that every effort is necessary but if you want to improve, you must remember the reason why you decided to do that character and maintain the love. Don’t forget who you are, that’s enough.

Special

However, the self-talents are always handy even though we think they don’t matter; for example, if you are good at Math and Geometry taking measurements and patterns is easy. Also there are some other abilities that can help with some things that we aren’t good at. An example is when you don’t know how to sew but you are good at the scenario. It’s something that we must think about but at the same time, we must not give up. We must try doing different things without worrying if something is going to result badly; spoiling something is how you learn!

Tips & Tricks

Also, you deal with your own shyness and you feel free to interact with other people while doing cosplay. You may discover your talent step by step and the love that you have for the character that you are interpreting. Acting is something really important for a cosplayer; you become the character while you participate or gather with your friends. A good cosplayer isn’t only the one that looks like the character, but also the one that will feel the character as oneself. I always try to do my best with every single cosplay that I do, even though I don’t have much time due to my work and studies.

S

omething that I consider useful and important in a cosplayer is the ‘devotion’. With that you can learn all you need for doing cosplay: sewing, handling materials, styling wigs, makeup, modifying shoes, etc.

W

hen I started doing cosplay, I didn’t really know anything but with time you learn a lot of different things that are useful not only for cosplay, but also for our daily life. Crafts are the first thing that you learn, sewing, painting and the creativity of being able to improvise with unbelievable materials.
