Local fishermen catch Navy torpedo

The Civil Guard is investigating the sighting of a Spanish Navy torpedo floating near the island of Tabarca over the weekend. A group of fishermen from the Alicante coast spotted the massive object while fishing about four miles from the shore. The discovery, which caused concern and curiosity in equal measure, was immediately reported to

the local authorities.

“We saw it passing behind us, floating on the sea current and we were surprised and wondering if what we were seeing was a buoy,” said Pedro Pertegal, one of the fishermen. “As it passed very close to us , we went to look out of curiosity and my companion, who has been in the army for six or seven years, confirmed to us that it

was a torpedo.”

The fishermen acted quickly and contacted Maritime Rescue and the Civil Guard. However, they say that it took the officers around an hour and a half to arrive at the scene to take charge of the object. Given the delay and the imminent danger that the torpedo could collide with a boat, mainly due to its proximity to the coast of Tabarca and the movement of jet skis in the area, the fishermen decided to hook it and tow it to the shore to avoid possible tragedies.

Pedro Pertegal later recounted the experience through his TikTok account, commenting that initially the authorities did not believe what was happening until they were sent a photo of the device. From that moment on, the Civil Guard communicated by radio and headed towards the exact

coordinates to be able to take charge.

“We removed it immediately because we sailed at dawn and we know how dangerous it can be if a boat travelling at high speed collides with it,” says Pertegal, who photographed and recorded the towing process so that he could report it to the Civil Guard.

The Guardia Civil confirmed that it had not received any prior notification of the loss of the torpedo. Among other issues, it has been confirmed that the device identified is a Mark 46 torpedo of the United States Navy, an antisubmarine model used by frigates of the Santa María and Álvaro Bazán classes, as well as by the SH60 Seahawk

helicopters of the Spanish Navy. A torpedo that was in open waters and represented a serious risk to navigation in the area.

The Guardia Civil is currently carrying out an investigation to determine how the torpedo came to be floating in the area. At the moment, all possibilities are open, including the theory that it could be a practice torpedo , since, if loaded, it would have yellow stripes and those found on the device were orange, indicating that it is unarmed.

Guardamar´s trick or treat route

Halloween, the night of October 31st and the eve of the celebration of All Saints’ Day, is fast approaching and the businesses in Guardamar del Segura are already preparing to offer new and original proposals to allow people to experience this key festivity and boost commercial activity at the same time.

‘Trick or Treat Route’ is the name of the initiative launched by Guardamar del Segura Town Hall, through the Department of Economic Promotion, to promote local trade on Halloween. The aim is to encourage leisure and free time, as well as economic activity through local promotion related to the restaurant and retail sectors, boosting the hospitality industry and local commerce with the rest of the economic sectors.

Shops wishing to participate must

decorate their establishment with a Halloween theme and display the decorative elements and merchandising that will be provided by the local authority. The City Council will design the ‘trick or treat’ route for all the participants who join. The children, in their costumes, will follow this route to receive sweets, chocolate, biscuits, etc.

The Department of Economic Promotion and Consumption has designed this initiative in order to support local businesses, as well as the citizens themselves, encouraging them to go out on the street and incentivise consumption in commercial establishments, bars and restaurants.

The deadline for submitting applications is 25th October at the local entity’s registry office or online.

Torrevieja man to stand trial for beating wife to death

The man accused of beating his partner to death in the early hours of December 17th -18th December 2021 in the house where they lived together in Torrevieja will go on trial this week.

The jury will have to decide whether the man acted with the intention of ending the victim’s life. Did he, knowing that there was a high probability of causing her death, in ict multiple blows all over her body. The court will hear the intense blows focussed on her head and stomach, causing shock that led to her death.

The court will determine whether, during the relationship that began in 2017 and lasted four years, the defendant exercised domination over the woman and whether he habitually used physical and psychological violence.

The Prosecutor’s O ce considers that the facts constitute a crime of murder, two crimes of abuse, a crime against moral identity and another crime of injury.

The man walked into Torrevieja Guardia Civil barracks at 7.15 am

and them his partner Elia was unconscious, after a ght.

The neighbours said that they heard loud noises in the house that night until almost two in the morning and that it was not the rst time they heard banging and ghting. On previous occasions they had called the Civil Guard, but this time they did not do so. However, there were no previous o cial complaints between the alleged murderer and the victim. Although the man does have a criminal record. Both are of Spanish nationality,

he was 39 years old and she was 35 at the time of the incident, originally from Orihuela, they had a daughter together. Luckily, on the night in question, the child was at the home of relatives, she was three years old.

The trial began yesterday, on Monday 14th October and will continue on the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th at the Jury Court in the Provincial Court of Alicante.

Orihuela invests 50,000e to restore Cathedral organ

Torrevieja removes unlicensed scooters from the streets

The Orihuela City Council is going to allocate 50,000 euros for the restoration of the organ of the Holy Cathedral Church of “El Salvador” in the city. This is a direct grant for the Cathedral and corresponds to the financial year 2024, with the aim of contributing to the promotion and cultural development of this important element of the Historical-Artistic Heritage of the city of Orihuela.

The restoration work on the Cathedral organ is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2025, as the organ must be ready for the upcoming Easter and the inaugural concert is scheduled for 25th April, 2025, Easter Friday.

At the beginning of last year, the Cathedral Chapter presented a project for the restoration of the organ of this temple. The great baroque organ of the Cathedral of Orihuela was made by Nicolás Salanova and Martín Userralde in Valencia in 1733. It has more than 72 registers, a cadereta and a large battle trumpet.

The City Council will proceed with the advance payment of the subsidy approved by the local government meeting and once the restoration work on the Cathedral organ has been completed, the Chapter must duly justify the application of the subsidy received to the expenses arising from the restoration.

For its restoration, the Generalitat approved the direct granting of an exceptional subsidy for an amount of 90,000 euros, which was used for dismantling, cleaning, classification and study, restoration of old pipes and new bellows.

However, the Council launched the “Sponsor a pipe” campaign in order to raise the money it needed to carry out the restoration, which will cost around 400,000 euros.

The Torrevieja Local Police, headed by councillor Federico Alarcón, has flexed its powers of control over electric scooters, which began at the beginning of September, to coincide with the start of the school year. They have focused on companies that offer scooters for rent on public roads without authorisation.

On some days, they have removed up to 30 scooters at a time. Although in many places in the centre of Torrevieja, the companies continue to operate their illegal supply without any problems.

The controls on private owners focus on checking whether the vehicles comply with regulationswithout any manipulation to unlock the speed and have the minimum safety requirements. Police are also sanctioning drivers who are underage or who, for example, drive with headphones as many school children use these vehicles to get to educational centres. In Torrevieja, there is still no fine for driving these scooters without a

helmet, as is the case in the laws of many other municipalities.

In the case of the removal of scooters owned by rental companies, dozens of unlicensed units grouped together on public land next to container islands, sidewalks or areas reserved for car parking are being targeted. This problem began after the pandemic and reached particular intensity this summer.

The companies that own these vehicles do not pay for the occupation of public roads like other activities - terraces, street vendors etc. On the other hand, they cannot pay as the City Council does not currently include this activity in its municipal ordinance.

The irregularity in the occupation of public spaces also extends to the areas where users of rental scooters abandon them when they have covered their journey and no longer need them.

Something that above all causes problems on pavements, including building exits, and the roadway itself, where

drivers have to avoid them.

Initially, companies that want to recover their confiscated vehicles must pay a fine for each one. This is not the first time that a tow truck has taken away a large number of scooters. Companies still find it worthwhile to continue carrying out their activity in an irregular mannerit is a lucrative business, especially in summer with very inadequate public transport and a very poor taxi service - in exchange for paying the fines.

At least five different companies have been competing for the lucrative personal mobility vehicle rental market this summer. The offer is now reduced to a couple of them after the high season. The companies have their own repair and recharging facilities, with a municipal opening license in the urban area. The activity listed in this opening license is not linked to what the companies then carry out on the street.

Spanish PM calls for speedy deal on migrants

Orihuela marks World Mental Health Day

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called for the European Union to bring forward the implementation of new rules on handling irregular migration and asylum seekers to 2025, one year ahead of schedule. His appeal comes as Spain faces a significant rise in migrant arrivals in the Canary Islands, while Hungary and the Netherlands are seeking opt-outs from the EU’s asylum regulations.

The new EU migration and asylum rules, adopted in May, are currently set to take effect in 2026. They aim to distribute hosting responsibilities among the 27 member states and expedite deportations of migrants who do not qualify for asylum. However, Sánchez is pushing for earlier enforcement, citing the urgent need for support in managing the growing influx of migrants in Spain.

“We are going to demand a policy of co-responsibility and solidarity from Brussels,”

Sánchez told the Spanish Congress, calling on Europe to “become effectively involved in managing the migratory flows that the Mediterranean countries are receiving.” He added that Spain will request the European Commission to begin implementing the new rules on border control and migrant distribution by the summer of 2025, rather than waiting until 2026.

The Canary Islands, located off the northwest coast of Africa, have seen a sharp increase in migrant arrivals this year. According to Spain’s Interior Ministry, 30,808 migrants arrived in the islands during the first nine months of 2023, more than double the number from the same period in 2022. The regional government of the Canaries is overwhelmed, caring for around 5,500 migrant minors—far exceeding its capacity of 2,000.

The surge in arrivals has elevated migration as a key concern for Spanish voters.

A recent poll published by

El País found that 57% of Spaniards believe there are too many immigrants in the country, and 41% expressed concern about immigration—a 16-point increase compared to 18 months ago.

While acknowledging that the issue is “delicate,” Sánchez emphasized the need for a balanced approach to immigration, arguing that it is vital for Spain’s economic future. He pointed out that more than half of Spanish businesses are struggling to find workers, with unfilled job vacancies now exceeding 150,000. “This is a record level which, if we don’t act, will multiply over the next few decades,” Sánchez warned.

Sánchez’s call for earlier implementation of the EU migration rules reflects growing pressure on Mediterranean countries to manage irregular migration flows, as well as the broader political challenges the issue poses across the European Union.

Life expectancy increase slows

A new study has revealed that the remarkable gains in life expectancy observed over the past two centuries are beginning to plateau. Despite advances in medical technology, genetic research, and an increasing number of centenarians, the rate of improvement in overall lifespan is slowing in countries where people traditionally live the longest, according to researchers.

The study, led by a researcher at the University of Illinois-Chicago, analysed life expectancy trends in eight countries with high longevity rates—Australia, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland— along with Hong Kong and the United States. The ndings, published recently in Nature Aging, highlight a global slowdown in life expectancy increases, particularly in the 2010s.

Researchers now believe there’s a limit, suggesting that the study should prompt a reassessment of policies on retirement and nancial planning for aging populations. He warned that the technologies meant to extend life are yielding diminishing returns, largely

due to the natural constraints of aging itself.

Other experts not involved in the study, praised the research as “a valuable addition to the mortality literature” and agree that life expectancy is reaching a plateau, cautioning that while future medical breakthroughs could extend survival further, no such developments are currently in sight.

Life expectancy is a widely used measure in global health, estimating the average number of years a baby born in a given year is expected to live. However, the study emphasises that life expectancy is a snapshot estimate, unable to account for unpredictable events such as pandemics or major medical discoveries that could drastically alter mortality rates.

The research team tracked life expectancy data from 1990 to 2019 using a database from the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Germany. Their ndings show that women continue to outlive men, and while life expectancy is still improving, the rate of increase has slowed considerably. In 1990, life expectancy improvements averaged 2.5 years per decade, but this dropped to just 1.5

years in the 2010s.

The researchers even modelled a scenario where all deaths before age 50 were eliminated, yet the improvement in life expectancy was modest, rising by only 1.5 years. “We’re squeezing less and less life out of these lifeextending technologies,” they explained. “And the reason is, aging gets in the way.”

The study also touched on the growing number of people reaching age 100, noting that in 2019, just over 2% of Americans made it to this milestone, compared to 5% in Japan and 9% in Hong Kong. Although the number of centenarians is expected to increase due to population growth, the overall percentage of people reaching 100 is likely to remain small, with fewer than 15% of women and 5% of men expected to make it to that age in most countries.

As life expectancy plateaus, the study suggests that societies may need to recalibrate their expectations for longevity, focusing on quality of life in old age rather than continuing to chase everlengthening lifespans.

The Mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara, and the Councillor for Health, Irene Celdrán, have participated this morning in the reading of the manifesto on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, which is commemorated every year on 10 October, together with representatives of the ADIEM association, users and members of the Municipal Corporation.

This World Mental Health Day aims to highlight the vital connection between mental health and work. Safe, healthy working environments can act as a protective factor for mental health. Unhealthy conditions including stigma, discrimination, and exposure to risks like harassment and other poor working conditions, can pose signi cant risks, a ecting mental health, overall quality of life and consequently participation or productivity at work. With 60% of the global population in work, urgent action is needed to ensure work prevents risks to mental health and protects and supports mental health at work. It is essential for governments, employers, the organizations which represent workers and employers,

and other stakeholders responsible for workers’ health and safety to work together to improve mental health at work. Action to address mental health at work should be done with the meaningful involvement of workers and their representatives, and persons with lived experience of mental health conditions. By investing e orts and resources in evidence-based approaches and interventions at work, we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive at work and in life. Let’s take action today for a healthier future.

In Orihuela Councillor Celdrán has highlighted “the importance of self-care in order to be able to take good care of others, since only when you are emotionally healthy can you o er support and a ection to those around you, so today we want to make visible what is needed for attention and care for mental health to become a reality throughout the world.”

Gertrudis Marcos, president of the Adiem Foundation, was in charge of reading the manifesto, under the motto “Work and mental health, a fundamental link”, focusing on the right of people with

mental health problems to have a job and the right of all people to enjoy a healthy work environment. This text also claims the following points:

1. They should be involved in creating safe, healthy and inclusive work environments, where mental health is cared for and discussed, without taboos or prejudices.

2. That measures be promoted against job insecurity and the control of occupational risks in companies.

3. That all types of resources be promoted to facilitate the labour insertion of people with mental health problems, such as vocational training, Special Employment Centres, and the promotion of supported employment and the promotion of labour insertion in ordinary employment positions.

4. That support systems and adaptations be considered in companies that uphold the right to work of people with mental health problems, just as workplaces are adapted for other disabilities.

Orihuela City Council increases the garbage tax and approves the new Local Waste Plan

The Orihuela City Council’s Local Government Board has approved a new ordinance to update the waste management fees, which aligns with Spain’s Law 7/2022 on waste and contaminated soils for a circular economy. This law mandates that residents in all Spanish municipalities cover the costs of waste collection, transportation, and treatment.

Orihuela’s current garbage tax, which was last updated 21 years ago in 2003, only covers 34.86% of the waste management service costs, creating a de cit that violates the new law. The total annual cost of the service amounts to approximately €18.76 million, and the new fees will cover €17.4 million of that, including an investment of over €3 million per year for the next six years to improve services like personnel, urban solid waste (USW) collection,

and street cleaning.

Residents of Orihuela will be charged €0.55 per day starting January 1, 2025. The ordinance includes reductions for speci c groups, such as singleparent families, large families, victims of gender violence, and others. In addition to this, the city

is developing further ordinances to provide additional bonuses and is exploring reductions in other municipal taxes to ease the nancial impact of the new fees. The goal is to meet the legal requirements while enhancing the e ciency of Orihuela’s waste management system.

How did champagne come about?

It is fun to take you into the history of “the Champagne”.

Around the year 1811, champagne was not yet a top product. In fact, the then Pope Urban II raised his threatening index finger because he even refused to drink it.

At that time, Champagne was nothing more than a country wine, which usually turned out to be somewhat sour.

The first real champagne is attributed to a Benedictine monk by the name of DOM PERIGNON. And it was thought that he conjured up bubbles in the wine, which was not the case.

He was a genius “wine mixer”. He blended different wines from different vineyards and different vintages with each other. He was the first person to work only with cuvées (mixtures) and thus became famous far and wide. Among other things, he blended wines with high acidity with wines of precious vintages.

For example, he blended Champillon, the wines of the Pinot Noir with wines of the Pinot Blanc. And it was said that he mixed “the white kings” of Avize and Cramant with the “good citizens” of Hautvilliers and Champillon.

And so he became known at the court of Louis XIV who

made him an important man and an important abbey.

Legend has it that when the king’s personal physician advised him to change from wine to wine from Beaune, the king quickly fell ill and was dead within two years.

Dom Perignon experimented with wines by adding cane sugar every now and then, which led to carbonation and then the usual hemp plugs regularly flew through the cellars.

Dom Perignon also invented the champagne cork in Spain.

Later, through the Revolution, the abbey became the property of the . wealthy wine merchant Jean Remy Moet

More than a hundred years later, two widows, Clicquot

and Pommery, have made sure that champagne was really put on the map.

They came up with the idea of placing the bottles in large holes that were drilled into tables. This allowed the sediment to sink towards the cork by also turning the bottles. The sediment was removed and much later the head of the bottle was frozen so that “the plug” popped out and then the final cork came in.

The pressure can be up to 6 bar.

At the time, champagne was mainly drunk as a dessert wine. The widow Pommery changed that so that the champagne could be drunk with every course.

Finally, a nice anecdote is that they also took the “bubbles” out of the champagne with a “Champagne whisk”. The ladies of easy virtue from Paris did this because there was always too much “gas” accumulating in their bodies, which did not give a pleasant reaction “during the act.

The real champagne is of course for sale at Beau Wine Tastings, but also the other beautiful bubbles that do not come from the champagne region.

Government authorises monthly water transfer for October, November and December

The Central Commission for the Operation of the Tajo-Segura Aqueduct has authorized a transfer of 81 hm³ from the EntrepeñasBuendía reservoirs through the Tajo-Segura Aqueduct for the months of October, November, and December. This transfer will be distributed evenly, with 27 hm³ allocated for each month.

The decision was made during the first meeting of the Central Commission for the Operation of the TajoSegura Aqueduct (ATS) for the 2024-2025 hydrological year, which was held last Wednesday. At this meeting, the commission reviewed updated data concerning the EntrepeñasBuendía reservoir system, as well as existing forecasts for future water levels.

The headwater reservoirs currently have an effective storage volume of 1,008.3 hm³. In accordance with established regulations, this situation is classified as one

of “hydrological normality” or level 2. Forecasts for the upcoming semester, spanning from October to March, also indicate that the system will remain at level 2 during this period.

Given these circumstances, and in accordance with current regulations, the Commission deemed it appropriate to authorize the transfer of 81 hm³ from the Entrepeñas-

Buendía reservoirs through the Tajo-Segura Aqueduct for October, November, and December, with 27 hm³ being transferred each month.

Additionally, the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) presented key data on the hydrological status of the Segura basin, assessing the situation as critical.

Spanish wine ranks second on list of world’s seven best wines

At the last meeting of European wine collectors in Wiesbaden, the seven best wines in the world were selected through a blind-tasting process. These wines, referred to as the “Magni cent Seven” by experts, showcased the pinnacle of winemaking craftsmanship. The Ribera del Duero Valduero 12 Años 2001 secured second place, standing out among prestigious names like Chateau Haut-Brion, which took rst, and Petrus, which placed third. It even surpassed other renowned labels such as Pingus and Penfolds Grange.

Valduero, situated in the highest lands of the Ribera del Duero, produces wines that are a testament to excellence. The Valduero 12 Años, in particular, is known for its meticulous craftsmanship, with a strong commitment to sustainability. The wine is produced in entirely natural vineyards, yielding only two bunches of grapes per plant, re ecting a deep respect for the environment.

Fine magazine, a symbol of luxury in Central Europe, occasionally gathers some of the world’s most prominent wine collectors, individuals who are accustomed to paying

high prices for rare bottles. These esteemed collectors determined the ranking of the “Seven Best Wines of the World” as follows:

Château Haut-Brion

(Bordeaux, France)

Valduero 12 Años (Ribera del Duero, Spain)

Château Petrus (Bordeaux, France)

Penfolds Grange (Australia) Masseto (Italy)

Pingus (Ribera del Duero, Spain)

Romaneé Conti Echezeaux (Burgundy, France)

Valduero 12 Años has rmly established itself as one of Europe’s nest wines. Aged for an extensive period in wood sourced from di erent

regions and further matured inside the bottle, this wine is now 23 years old. It is remarkable for its structure, elegance, and above all, its freshness and youthful character despite its age. European collectors praised Valduero 12 Años for its extraordinary ageing potential, predicting that it will continue to improve in the bottle for at least another 15 years.

The most recent vintage, Valduero 12 Años 2004, has also made waves in the wine world. It received an impressive 99 points out of 100 from Wine Enthusiast (USA 2024), cementing its status as one of Spain’s highest-rated wines.

Two weeks into October and currency markets are warming up, despite the cooler autumnal weather. Volatility has been incredibly high, largely driven by con ict in the Middle East. As traders took the common run to safety, USD strengthened, while GBP has dropped by more than 2% against it.

Sterling weakness was further compounded by comments from Andrew Bailey, the Governor of the Bank of England, who cast doubt on the BoE’s stance ahead of their next policy meeting on 7 November. Bailey suggested that bank cuts could become “more aggressive” than expected, diluting some of the Pound’s strength against the USD and the Euro as its higher yield against both currencies looks like it might be short-lived.

Andrew Bailey’s stance was refuted by Huw Pill, Chief Economist and MPC member, who said that interest rate cuts in the UK should be “gradual”, and that while in ation levels are expected to rise to 2.5% around Christmas, they will likely move back towards the target 2% in early 2025. It is worth noting that the Bank of England has not cut interest rates at consecutive meetings since 2020.

August GDP data was released today, meeting expectations of a 0.2% reading and showing a slight uptick on the previously stagnant release. This could signal some further capacity in the UK economy for monetary easing from the Bank of England.

Also released today were the UK’s Manufacturing and Industrial production

gures, which both came in over forecast and showed some positive movement in the UK economy. Industrial production came in at 0.5%, ahead of the 0.2% expected by markets, and Manufacturing production reported a 1.1% increase, ahead of the 0.3% forecast. These positive indicators could contribute to bolstering the Pound’s standing.

EUR

September saw the Eurozone in ation rate drop below the ECB’s 2% target range to 1.8%. Core in ation, which excludes the cost of food and energy, fell to its lowest level since February 2022. These gures have raised expectations of an October ECB rate cut.

The ECB has already cut rates from record highs twice this year, and markets now expect even quicker policy easing with moves in October and December fully priced in as in ationary pressures are easing faster than policymakers had expected.

According to Eurostat, retail sales in the eurozone saw a modest recovery in August, when trade volumes rose by 0.2% compared with July. At the same time, the European Union saw a 0.3% increase. Although the gures were in line with economists’ expectations, the annual reading for the eurozone fell short of the anticipated 1% rise, re ecting some softness about consumer spending dynamics across the currency bloc.

Orihuela carries out two rainwater drainage works on the coast to prevent flooding

The Orihuela City Council has launched two signi cant projects related to rainwater management along the coast. Speci cally, these actions involve the installation of a stormwater collector on Mariano Torregrosa Street and the replacement of the runo water system to improve drainage on Cabo Roig Cape Avenue.

The rst project, with a budget of 321,217 euros, involves constructing a new rainwater collector approximately 290 meters long. The collector begins its path at the low point of the San Miguel de Salinas road, near the intersection with Mariano Torregrosa Street, and will channel the collected water into the green area next to Bahamas Street. “This measure will help prevent water accumulation during heavy rainfall, ensuring smoother transit for both vehicles and pedestrians,” explained Víctor Valverde, the councilman for Infrastructure (PP). The project also includes installing a collection system at various points along the collector’s route,

as well as multiple drainage inlets. The road surface will be replaced across the full width of the a ected street. The company Soluciones Tecnológicas del Agua S.L. has been awarded this contract.

The second project involves the construction of two continuous drainage inlets, featuring angular steel frames with dimensions of 7,000x600mm, a central wall 40 cm wide, and a depth of 100 cm. These

will be connected to the drainage network, with two additional manholes. The goal is “to prevent ooding from runo water originating from the N-332 highway on Cabo Roig Avenue,” according to the mayor. This project has been awarded to the company Oserpro 2000 S.L. Both projects were awarded in mid-August, but their implementation was postponed to avoid disruption during the busy peak season on the coast.

Gill´s story – From Peter Pan to Pinocchio´s Gepetto

After 35 years of nursing I came to Spain to retire and slow down. However, after being press ganged by friends into attending a rehearsal just to see how it worked ... I was hooked, and life has become anything but slow.

I have found myself doing so many unexpected things like making scenery, costumes and props and I’m always amazed at how innovative the group is with ideas and sourcing materials. I feel a real purpose in memorising the script and delight in the opportunity to learn and practice my lines in Spanish.

My family is convinced I’m an up and coming superstar in Spain...and who am I to disillusion them! The icing on the cake is knowing that our group of amateur actors are helping raise funds to support local school children and families in need here.

Alicante and Elche to unite for inaugural international marathon

Alicante and Elche will join forces on November 30, 2025, for the inaugural 1st International Marathon, which will start at the Altamira Palace on Maestro Albéniz Street in Elche and conclude at Pier 12 in the Port of Alicante. This event was o cially announced on Friday by the mayors of both cities, Luis Barcala of Alicante and Pablo Ruz of Elche, during a press conference in the Blue Room of Alicante City Hall. The presentation was also attended by Luis Cervera, the general director of Sport for the Generalitat Valenciana.

The marathon’s 42-kilometre route will be divided into three sections: eleven kilometres through the urban center of Elche, 20 kilometres on the road between the two cities, and the nal eleven kilometres through the urban centre of Alicante, as explained by the event’s director, José Manuel Albentosa. He highlighted that the course is “practically at and slightly downhill,” making it ideal for achieving fast times. Registration for the event opens on Monday, November 11, 2024, via the website maratonelchealicante.com.

One of the unique aspects of the ‘Elche-Alicante’ marathon is that, along with the Boston Marathon, it is one of

the few marathons worldwide with a start and nish in di erent cities. The Boston Marathon, which takes place on April 25, begins in Hopkinton and nishes in Boston.

Luis Barcala, Mayor of Alicante, emphasized the marathon’s “international vocation,” stating that the goal is to make this an enduring event due to its uniqueness. He added that the race is an essential part of the broader project connecting Alicante and Elche, reinforcing their position as a key functional axis within the Valencian Community and Spain.

Barcala also noted the marathon’s route will showcase the cultural heritage of Elche, the business potential along the route, and promote the scenic coastal areas and historic sites in Alicante, culminating along the shores of the Mediterranean.

Pablo Ruz, Mayor of Elche, echoed Barcala’s sentiments, describing the marathon as a symbol of the improved relations between the two cities and highlighting how sport can unite them. He further explained that the race will enhance the international pro le of both cities, attracting visitors by combining sport, culture, and tourism. He emphasized that initiatives like this

re ect a shared commitment to improve both cities. Both mayors agreed that the marathon is intended to be a permanent xture, with future editions also starting in Elche and nishing in Alicante due to the topography of the route. Barcala noted that the marathon is part of a broader collaboration between the two cities, which together form the second and third largest metropolitan areas in the Valencian Community. One of the promotional strategies for the marathon will involve a marketing campaign aimed at attracting runners from over 30 countries. Additionally, tourist packages will be o ered to encourage participants to visit both Elche and Alicante.

In terms of logistics, a eet of trailers will be stationed in Elche to transport the personal belongings of participants to Alicante. Buses will be available to shuttle runners from Alicante to Elche before the race, and a separate eet will return participants residing in Elche and nearby areas after the marathon.

The rst details of the marathon were originally revealed by Barcala and Ruz at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in January.

Torrevieja participates in the progamme of European Urban Initiatives

The Local Government Board (JGL) approved this morning, Friday, October 11, the inclusion of Torrevieja in the European Program of European Urban Initiatives through the “Sumando” project.

Federico Alarcón, Councillor-Secretary of the JGL, and Gitte Lund, Councillor for Relations with the European Union and European Funds, presented this initiative, which aims to install smart cameras for number plate detection and environmental cameras to monitor traffic anomalies. These cameras will allow real-time analysis of urban mobility, enhancing both road safety and traffic efficiency.

To support this project, the Torrevieja City Council has applied for European funding under the “Sumando” project, with a proposed budget of 5,085,218 euros. The council is requesting a subsidy of 4,067,374 euros.

The European Urban Initiative, funded through the ERDF, supports cities with over 50,000

residents to build skills and knowledge, foster innovation, and develop solutions to urban challenges that align with EU priorities. This call specifically focuses on supporting innovative and scalable actions to address issues related to sustainable urban development and enhancing cities’ ability to design policies, strategies, and practices in an integrated, participatory manner.

Torrevieja aims to improve urban security and optimize traffic management, particularly during periods of high tourist congestion. To achieve this, the city

plans to upgrade its video surveillance system with an innovative solution that collects data for agile decisionmaking, adapting to the city’s mobility needs.

With the potential support of this European program, the city council is focusing on smart cameras for license plate detection and traffic monitoring, enabling real-time mobility analysis to improve both safety and traffic flow. Torrevieja’s “Sumando” project, in partnership with universities, private companies, and associations, has received validation from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).

Torrevieja starts installation work on lighting for Patron Saint fiesta and Christmas

Preliminary work has begun on installing the festive ornamental lighting for Torrevieja’s Patron Saint Festivities and Christmas. Concha Sala, the councillor overseeing this project, shared key details about the installation, which is being carried out by the contractor “Iluminaciones Granja SL.” This year’s display will include 534 lighting xtures, comprising arches and lamppost elements with Christmas motifs, all using energye cient LED technology. The lighting will cover around 70 streets, squares, promenades, and residential areas throughout Torrevieja.

A highlight of this year’s decorations will be a 20-metre-tall Christmas tree featuring cutting-edge RGB LED technology on the Juan Aparicio Promenade. Visitors will be able to walk inside the tree. Additionally, three other trees, each standing 15 metres tall, will be placed at Plaza de Encarnación Puchol, Plaza de Oriente, and in front of the Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, with another at the entrance of the Palacio de Deportes “Tavi y Carmona.”

The 2024 lighting design will also feature an ornamental ball at Plaza de Miguel Hernández, near the

Municipal Theatre, which will be open to visitors. For the rst time, “Twinkly” technology will be used along Ramón Gallud Street to create coordinated color displays and animations, customized for this bustling commercial street.

Other central pedestrian streets, including Calle Concepción, Calle Fotógrafos Darblade, and Calle Canónigo Torres, will also receive special lighting. Over 450,000 micro LED bulbs will be arranged vertically to create a festive atmosphere in this popular area, attracting both residents and visitors during the holiday season. The Church of the Immaculate Conception will once again have its traditional decorative lighting, with around 150,000 warm white micro LED bulbs adorning its façade. After several years, the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of

La Mata will be illuminated with a new, modern design. Additionally, the 20-metre tree at the entrance to the shing port, near the Torrevieja Casino, will be decorated with micro LED bulbs and warm white LED ash lighting.

A new feature of the 2024/2025 lighting plan is the complete renewal of the city’s lighting materials, including those along Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas. The festive lighting will also extend to outlying areas such as La Siesta, Torreta Florida, Los Balcones, and Aguas Nuevas, where around 1,000 metres of LED light strips and “Merry Christmas” signs will be installed.

The total investment for this project is 387,467 euros, plus VAT, which is more than 60,000 euros below the original tender estimate.

The natural history museum reopens for two months in autumn with free guided tours

The “Joaquín Chapaprieta” Municipal Institute of Culture, in collaboration with the Ars Creatio Cultural Association, reopens the doors of the Natural History Museum again to continue the successful guided tours carried out by the scientist María Luisa Molina.

The museum will reopen for two months during the autumn season, from 16 October to 15 December. The museum

will be open on Wednesday and Friday mornings for schools, which will make one to three visits in one morning, at the discretion of the school, admitting a maximum of 30 students on each visit. On Sundays and holidays it will be open to families and the general public from 10:00 to 13:00, with free admission, and at 11:00 am guided tours will be made.

Guided tours require

prior registration via this link https://acortar.link/ BXyHBF or the QR code on the poster. Registration is now open!

As last year, the visits are included in the programme of the 16th Science Week organised by the Torrevieja City Council, Ars Creatio and the Miguel Hernández University, and the activity is funded by the Generalitat Valenciana and the Miguel Hernández University.

Almoradí incorporates the SASEM Mental Health program

The Almoradí City Council, through its Department of Social Welfare, is strengthening its support for individuals with mental health issues by integrating the SASEM programme (the Care and Monitoring Service for People with Mental Health Problems) into its range of services.

Mayor María Gómez and the Councillor for Social Welfare, Nuria Follana, presented the team responsible for implementing this programme. The team, led by Jenny Murcia (psychologist from the ADIEMSENTIT Foundation), Ángeles Soriano (social worker), and Manoli Antolinos (psychologist), has been working on the programme for several months.

In conjunction with International Mental Health Day, observed on Thursday, October 10, this new department was o cially introduced. Councillor Nuria Follana emphasized that numerous workshops and activities are organized to assist people facing mental health challenges, helping them integrate into society and recognizing their e orts to overcome daily adversities. Similarly, Ángeles Soriano highlighted that the City Council’s commitment to mental health support dates back over 20 years, through a collaboration with the ADIEM Foundation to assist individuals with mental health problems and their families. This partnership strengthened the Social Services’ primary care team, which is now further enhanced by the SASEM programme, a speci c primary care resource within the Valencian

Public System of Social Services. SASEM o ers specialized intervention support for people with severe mental health problems, working in their personal and family environments to ensure they can remain in their homes and communities. The interdisciplinary team includes a psychologist, an educator (ADIEM), and a social worker.

The programme provides personalized, close care in coordination with various entities such as the Mental Health Care Network (Health Center, UCA), ETAC (Community Assertive Therapy Team), UHP (Psychiatric

Hospitalization Unit), and other local services like the Local Police and judicial systems. It focuses on prevention, promoting personal autonomy, rehabilitation, and social inclusion.

The social worker’s role in SASEM is vital, going beyond simply handling requests and providing advice on bene ts and services. Instead, the work involves supporting mental health care, crisis management, social and labor integration, housing, residential care, economic support, and the protection and defense of individuals’ rights. A special emphasis is placed on supporting

families, who often feel neglected and struggle to understand how mental illness a ects their loved ones.

The SASEM team stressed that supporting families is crucial, helping them understand the illness, recognize symptoms, manage emotions, and maintain daily routines like medication, eating, and hygiene. They emphasized that rehabilitation for people with mental health problems is possible, but it requires the involvement of society to reduce social stigma.

After ve months in operation, SASEM is serving 68 people, with 42 receiving psychological care, 54 receiving social intervention, and 40 receiving educational care.

Manoli Antolinos explained that individuals eligible for the programme must be aged between 18 and 65 and meet the diagnostic criteria for Severe Mental Disorder (SMD). These individuals may have varying degrees of personal, family, social, and workrelated impairment as a result of their mental health issues. People without prior diagnoses or treatment, but who are in the early stages of mental health problems and need guidance after seeking treatment, are also eligible. Access to the SASEM service can be initiated through di erent channels, such as Municipal Social Services, Mental Health Units, or following hospitalization in a Psychiatric Hospitalization Unit.

Psychological treatment is tailored to each individual, focusing on the goals they deem important. Together with the person, areas for improvement are identi ed to help them gain control over their life and develop healthy habits. Therapy is designed to minimize the impact of symptoms, improve selfconcept, and empower individuals to regain control of their lives.

Jenny Murcia outlined that SASEM has initiated ve workshops aimed at psychosocial rehabilitation, health promotion, and community support. These workshops cover topics such as health, relaxation, memory, selfesteem, and leisure activities and are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10:00 to 12:00.

Mayor María Gómez expressed her gratitude to the team and underscored the signi cance of this initiative, o cially launched on an important date. She highlighted the increasing mental health challenges, especially following the pandemic, and emphasized the need for the service to expand to better support individuals with mental illness. The service has been reinforced with the addition of a psychologist and social worker, focusing on social adaptation and integration. The Mayor also mentioned plans to further develop programmes aimed at children and youth, addressing another signi cant challenge faced by society.

OCU condemns textile giant’s delayed response to Cyberattack

The long-awaited notification has finally arrived, as Tendam, one of Europe’s leading textile companies and the parent company of brands like Cortefiel, Women’secret, Springfield, and Pedro del Hierro, has addressed its customers following a cyber attack that occurred on 5 September.

The Spanish Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) criticized Tendam for its delayed response and urged affected customers to take precautions to avoid phishing attacks.

The OCU pointed out that despite the incident being reported to the Spanish Data Protection Agency on 5 September, it took nearly a month for the company’s loyalty club members to receive a notification explaining the breach.

The OCU warned that the stolen data could be used for identity theft, urging customers to exercise caution and follow a series of steps:

Be cautious with any unusual communications (emails, WhatsApps, SMS). If you cannot identify the sender,

In a communication to members of its loyalty clubs—Club Cortefiel, Club WOW, and Club Springfield—Tendam has alerted customers to the possibility that cybercriminals may have accessed personal data such as names, ID numbers, addresses, emails, and phone numbers. While the company ruled out the compromise of more sensitive data like credit card information or passwords, the breach still poses significant risks.

ignore the message.

Even if the sender appears legitimate, verify by contacting them through official channels, not through any links provided in the suspicious message. Do not click on links or provide any bank or personal information.

The OCU noted that this is not an isolated incident, citing similar cyberattacks this year on large companies like Banco Santander, Repsol, and Telefónica. The consumer organization stressed that, by law, companies must promptly notify both authorities and affected customers of security breaches to prevent further damage. In this case, the delayed response, according to the OCU, highlights the need for penalties to ensure quicker communication in the future.

Alert issued over cannabis derivative found in product resembling gummy sweets

Health authorities in Madrid have issued a food alert after detecting a cannabis derivative in a product that resembles children’s jelly sweets. The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan) reported the presence of hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) in Brandin’s HHC Gummies, a product sold online from the Czech Republic.

These gummies, marketed under the brand Cannabis Innovation CBD, are labelled in a way that may sometimes state “not for consumption” or “collector’s item,” yet their appearance mimics sweets, making them particularly appealing to children. As a result, they are classified as foodstuffs.

Aesan has warned that these and similar products containing HHC, available online, pose serious health risks if consumed. Authorities have alerted regional bodies via the SCIRI system to ensure that

such products are not available on the market.

Consumers are strongly advised to refrain from consuming any products containing HHC and to discard any they may already have.

Is coffee or matcha better for your health?

As matcha continues to rise in popularity, many people are considering swapping their daily co ee for this vibrant, earthy beverage. Made from powdered green tea whisked into hot water or milk, matcha o ers a unique avor pro le and is packed with antioxidants and amino acids that have been linked to various health bene ts, including improved cognitive function and potential cancer prevention. While co ee is also rich in antioxidants and remains a daily staple for about half of adults in the United States, it’s known for helping to reduce fatigue and has been associated with reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, in ammation, and depression. So, which is better for your health—matcha or co ee?

Let’s dive into their bene ts, similarities, and di erences.

Co ee is well-known for its antioxidant content, particularly chlorogenic acid, which has been shown to reduce in ammation, improve blood sugar levels, and potentially prevent cancer. Drinking co ee— whether ca einated or decaf— has also been linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. In fact, research shows that each additional cup of co ee consumed can lower the risk of diabetes by 6%. This may be due to co ee’s ability to reduce

in ammation and positively impact the gut microbiome.

Additionally, co ee has been associated with a reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease, possibly due to its impact on preventing the misproduction of proteins involved in the condition. Co ee’s bene ts for brain health extend to lowering the risk of dementia, particularly after a stroke, and reducing rates of depression.

For example, studies indicate that people who drink 1.5 cups of co ee per day may have the lowest rates of depression, with each additional cup lowering the risk of depression by 8%.

Like co ee, matcha is rich in antioxidants, speci cally polyphenols, with a high concentration of catechins—a type of polyphenol known for its ability to neutralize harmful free radicals linked to chronic diseases.

The most notable catechin in matcha, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), has been studied for its role in preventing various cancers, including colorectal, gallbladder, and biliary duct cancers.

Matcha also supports cognitive function. Studies suggest that regular consumption can improve cognitive abilities, particularly in elderly women. The combined e ect of matcha’s ca eine and

L-theanine, an amino acid, may help boost dopamine and serotonin receptors, improving memory and reducing anxiety.

In terms of metabolic health, matcha has shown promising e ects in studies, with participants experiencing increased HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol), reduced blood glucose levels, and elevated levels of IL-10, an anti-in ammatory cytokine. Although direct human studies on matcha and depression are lacking, research on green tea indicates a potential link between consumption and lower depression rates, particularly among postmenopausal women, through mechanisms like reducing in ammation and boosting estrogen levels.

Similarities and Di erences

Both co ee and matcha o er health bene ts largely due to their antioxidant properties. However, the speci c types of antioxidants they contain di er— co ee provides chlorogenic acid, while matcha is rich in catechins, particularly EGCG. Both drinks may lower the risk of certain chronic diseases and improve cognitive function and mental health.

are not coming this year. My brother says it was my fault, and I was insensitive! Why do we have to walk on eggshells around them?

You don’t have to walk on eggshells around anyone, but you tell me in your longer email how your brother has called the shots his entire life in your family, and growing up, you were all encouraged by your father, to bow and scrape to him. You acted reasonably, and everyone should be able to speak freely without being insulting. It’s very difficult to stay quiet in situations like that especially when you see the wrong in something. However, Christmas can be a tricky time, and we can be fueled with alcohol and frustration on being shoved together with people we wouldn’t ordinarily want to spend time with. There’s nothing as far as I can see that you should reproach yourself for. You could...do as we do, and be with the people we want to be with at Christmas; and every other day in our lives. Life is too short.

My attention seeking sister-inlaw went ‘Vegan’ a year ago, and we’ve not stopped hearing about how meat-eaters are murderers. At last year’s Christmas Day meal my Mum very thoughtfully made her a nut roast, which she said was tasteless. I piped up that it was thoughtful of Mum to go to a lot of trouble for her. Everyone joined in with hear hear, except my sister in law and her husband. Then, to all of our amazement she pours gravy all over it! I couldn’t help myself and (nicely) pointed out that the gravy was made from blood from the meat. Then she starts crying. My brother (her husband) reared up in her defence, and shouted at me at how I had humiliated his wife. I said I had simply wanted to point out that she was about to make a mistake. Things got even more heated when my cousin agreed with me, recalling a time when my sister in law was happy enough to eat the cheese his wife had put out; and that surely, cheese is made from cows milk, and is not vegan. On that, they marched out... sister in law still wailing. They WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. Magnesium is essential to every organ in the body, especially the heart, kidneys, and muscles. It plays a role in enzyme activation, energy produc- tion, and regulating other nutrients in the body. Magnesium is a mineral found in many foods, in- cluding green leafy vege- tables, whole grains, and nuts. Still, many people fall short of their daily magne- sium needs.

While true magnesium de ciency is rare, low levels of the mineral can have adverse e ects on the body. Symptoms may include sleep disorders, irritability, confusion, mus- cle spasms, and low blood

pressure. Decreased levels of magnesium have also been linked to anxiety and stress.1

Anxiety is characterized by worried thoughts and feelings of tension, typical- ly focused on future-ori- ented concerns. Anxiety can manifest in physical symptoms like dizziness, increased blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, and excessive sweating.2

Many people turn to magnesium supplementation to better manage stress and its symptoms. But what does science say about using magnesium for anxiety?

Top tips on buying a second hand car in Spain

Before purchasing a secondhand car, it is essential to carry out several checks to ensure the vehicle is in good condition and that the transaction is safe. First, it is highly recommended to request a report from the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT). This report will provide important details about the car’s history, including any outstanding charges, accidents, and the number of previous owners. If you lack mechanical expertise, it’s a good idea to take the car to a trusted mechanic for a thorough inspection, which can help identify potential hidden problems that may not be immediately visible. Additionally, verifying that the vehicle’s documentation is in order and that the indicated mileage aligns with the car’s age and usage is crucial. Mileage fraud is a common concern when buying second-hand cars, so double-checking this information is essential.

When it comes to purchasing options, there are a few routes to consider. Buying directly from an individual is often cheaper but comes with greater risks, though these can be mitigated by following the aforementioned steps. It’s important to formalize the transaction with a private purchase contract that includes all the details of the sale. Another option is purchasing from a car dealer

or dealership (concesionario), which offers more security. Dealerships typically provide guarantees, conduct pre-sale inspections, and are legally required to offer a minimum one-year warranty. Lastly, online platforms like Wallapop, Facebook Marketplace, Milanuncios, and Coches.net provide additional avenues for finding second-hand cars. However, when using these portals, it is essential to verify the reliability of the seller and follow the same guidelines as when buying directly from an individual.

In terms of taxes and fees, purchasing a second-hand car in Spain involves paying the Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales (ITP) or Property Transfer Tax, as well as the ownership transfer fee. The ITP varies by region and generally ranges from 4% to 8% of the car’s value, which is paid to the regional tax office. Additionally, a change of ownership fee is payable to the DGT during the transfer process, which typically costs around 55 euros, although this amount can vary slightly depending on the region.

September ends with 101 people killed in tra c accidents

There have been 88 fatal traffic accidents in which 101 people have died, in a context in which mobility has increased by 3.3% compared to September of last year.

The increase in deaths in vans this month stands out, with 8 more people than in the same month of 2023.

The number of deaths recorded due to collisions has increased (+14) and the number caused by road exits has decreased (-7).

13 of the deceased were not using the appropriate safety system at the time of the accident: 9 car users and 2 van users were not wearing seat belts, and 1 cyclist and 1 motorcycle user were not wearing a helmet.

Former She eld United defender drowned at his home in Athens

Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock drowned while swimming in the pool at his home in Athens, a family statement has said.

Greek police earlier confirmed there was no evidence that criminal activity caused the death of the 31-year-old Greece international, who signed for Athens club Panathinaikos in the summer.

“We are heartbroken with the sudden passing of our beloved George. We can confirm that a post-mortem examination has found that George tragically drowned whilst swimming in the pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens,” a statement from Baldock’s family read.

“George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, team-mate and person. Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands.

“We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son. You were due to fly home today for us to celebrate his first birthday together, but instead we mourn your loss.

Ralf Nadal announces retirement

“It was impossible not to love him. We ask that you please continue to respect our privacy at this devastating time as we begin to process our grief.”

Greece international Baldock

“As a family it has been incredibly touching, but equally so very difficult to read the huge number of tributes written by those that knew George and from those whose life he touched.

signed for Panathinaikos this summer after a seven-year spell at Bramall Lane, making his debut in August.

The Greek club posted a tribute on Instagram, writing: “We are shocked by the loss of our George. Panathinaikos’ family mourns his unexpected loss. We stand with the family and relatives of George Baldock.”

Rafael Nadal, one of tennis’ greatest legends, has announced his retirement from professional tennis, marking the end of an extraordinary era. In a video shared on social media on Thursday, the Spanish icon expressed his gratitude: “I’m retiring from professional tennis. A thousand thanks to everyone.” His nal matches will take place with the Spanish Davis Cup team in November, closing a career that has spanned 23 years at the pinnacle of the sport.

Nadal, who had long de ed the odds with his resilience and ability to overcome countless injuries, has struggled over the past two years. The de ning moment came in early 2023 when he su ered a serious iliopsoas tendon injury at the Australian Open, which set o a series of setbacks. Despite repeated e orts to recover and return to form, including surgery, his body—worn down by years of intense physical strain—could no longer keep up. At 38, with his body bearing far more wear than his years suggest, Nadal has decided it’s time to step away

from the game he dominated for so long.

The announcement comes as a bittersweet moment for fans and the tennis world. Throughout his career, Nadal’s relentless ghting spirit, sheer determination, and grit made him an unparalleled competitor, overcoming injuries and adversity to win 22 Grand Slam titles. His retirement echoes that of his great rival, Roger Federer, another titan of tennis whose career also ended due to physical limitations. Now, with Nadal stepping down, only Novak Djokovic remains from a generation that de ned modern tennis.

Nadal’s departure signals not just the end of a career but the close of a golden chapter in tennis history. His journey— from the young prodigy who captivated Spain to the global icon who won hearts worldwide—will forever be remembered. Even as he bids farewell, Nadal’s legacy as one of the greatest to ever wield a racket is rmly etched into the annals of tennis.

On Tuesday the 7th of October we fished the 7th round of the Autumn cup on the Rio Segura in Murcia town centre. Upon arrival the river was slightly down but running at a normal speed and virtually the entire match was fished in overcast conditions. Only seven anglers attended and we fished one large section with peg 1 after the first bridge.

Winner on the day was Bill cannon, Bill fished the feeder from peg five with pellets and ran out a comfortable winner with 13.723kg. In second place was Terry

Stroud on peg 6 who used similar tactics for a total weight of 11.33kg. In third places was Graham Patterson who also fished the feeder from his usual peg 1. Weighing 9.70kg. Rods N Reels

The following day we returned to our spiritual home at El Bosquet. Once again a low turn out of 8 anglers meant that the match was split into two sections with 4 anglers on 1 to 7 and 4 on 17 to 25. Winner on the day was John Waples from peg 2. John fished the pole down the middle or across on maggots

and caught some decent carp for 20.10kg. In second place on peg B1 was Barry Homer. Barry used similar tactics and weighed 14.64kg.

In third place was myself Ian Brown. Drawn on the unfancied peg 6 I fished mainly shallow across to catch 2 large bass, 2 large Mullet and 6 carp for 13.46kg all caught on the maggot.

The other section fished particularly poor and was won by Bill Wakenhall on peg 23 with 8.02kg.
