Fire breaks out near church during Palm Sunday procession in Albatera

An unusual and unsettling scene unfolded on Palm Sunday afternoon in Albatera as a fire broke out near the Church of Santiago Apóstol, just as the Hermandad de la Salud y la Esperanza procession was taking place.

Dozens of faithful had gathered in the Plaza de España to witness the solemn

departure of Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Salud from the historic church when they were startled by a sudden column of thick, dark smoke rising from a nearby street. The unexpected sight disrupted the otherwise reverent atmosphere of the religious celebration, creating a moment of confusion and concern among attendees.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire originated just a few streets away, in a local gymnasium, which suffered significant damage as the flames quickly took hold. Emergency services were called to the scene, and firefighting efforts commenced

swiftly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, no injuries have been reported at this time. The procession was able to continue, albeit under the shadow of the dramatic incident, marking an atypical and unforgettable Palm Sunday for the residents of Albatera.

Local authorities have praised the swift response of emergency teams and have assured the public that safety protocols were followed to ensure the continuation of the religious event without further incident.

Environmental approval delays new runway at Alicante-Elche airport

The long-anticipated construction of a new taxiway at Miguel Hernández Alicante-Elche Airport remains stalled due to delays in receiving key environmental approvals. Although the tender launched by Aena over a year ago reached the final stage of the contracting process, no award proposal has yet been issued among the eight pre-selected companies. The reason, according to sources close to the project, lies in the administrative hurdles tied to securing environmental authorization—an essential requirement before any work can begin.

Currently, various governmental bodies, including those under the Ministry for Ecological Transition, are preparing the necessary environmental reports. With no set timeline for their completion, the future of the project remains uncertain. This is part of the standard regu-

latory framework for public infrastructure projects, particularly those involving changes in land use.

The taxiway is a key strategic investment aimed at doubling the airport’s surface capacity for aircraft movement. It will streamline takeoff and landing maneuvers, reduce positioning times, and effectively increase available flight slots. Aena also expects the second taxiway to provide greater operational flexibility in cases of disruption—such as the pavement collapse near the Delta entrance on March 30, which required aircraft to reroute via alternate paths. That incident, though resolved by April 4, underscored the need for added infrastructure resilience.

With a construction budget of €21.1 million (including taxes) and a projected timeline of 27 months, the project originally attracted

bids from 19 firms, with eight advancing to the financial evaluation stage. These included Pavasal, Abaldo, and Obrascón Huarte Laín, among others. Despite their competitive proposals, ranging from €14 to €17.4 million (excluding taxes), the final award remains pending.

This taxiway is Aena’s flagship investment at Alicante-Elche Airport, complementing future terminal expansions designed to raise passenger capacity from 18.4 million to 26 million annually.

11th-Century arab bath discovered beneath Orihuela’s Rubalcava Palace

A remarkable archaeological discovery has emerged during restoration works at the Rubalcava Palace in Orihuela. While preparing to install a reghting tank in the palace’s north garden—located next to Plaza de Santiago—workers unearthed a hidden piece of history: part of an Andalusian thermal complex dating back to the 11th century. Speci cally, they uncovered a hammam hot room, revealing the palace grounds once housed an Arab bath from the early medieval period.

The excavation, originally intended to support a modern re protection system, exposed an underground structure measuring approximately 9 by 4.64 meters. Experts identi ed it as a rectangular thermal space, complete with a hypocaust—a heating system used in ancient bathhouses. The hypocaust itself measures 5.5 by 3 meters and features a furnace-based mechanism that circulated hot air through brick pillars beneath the oor. An adjoining alcove, several doorways, and signs of heat exposure on the structure’s interior surfaces con rm its use as a traditional Islamic bathhouse.

Given the signi cance of the nd, Orihuela’s Urban Planning and Historical Heritage Councilor, Matías Ruiz, con rmed that all ongoing construction was paused to preserve the site. In consultation with the Generalitat Valenciana’s cultural authorities, the remains will be conserved in situ and integrated into the Rubalcava Palace’s historical narrative.

Plans are already underway for the museumization of the site.

The City Council has committed to relocating the re protection system to avoid disturbing the archaeological remains. A

dedicated museum project is also in development, which will include signage, illumination, and garden integration to allow public access and viewing.

Following the completion of current works, the City Council intends to expand the excavation and fully explore the ancient bath complex. A comprehensive museum and cultural dissemination plan will be developed and proposed for future municipal funding, ensuring this piece of Orihuela’s heritage is preserved and shared with generations to come.

Seven arrested in back-to-back drug

busts by Civil Guard in Torrevieja

The Torrevieja Civil Guard’s Citizen Security Unit (USECIC) has dismantled two drug tra cking operations in rapid succession, arresting seven individuals over two days and seizing a signi cant quantity of narcotics and cash.

The rst intervention occurred on March 22, when o cers stopped a vehicle on the AP-7 motorway. Upon inspection, they discovered 150 grams of cocaine and €2,415 in cash. The three occupants—a 31-year-old man, a 35-year-old man, and a 34-year-old woman— were arrested on suspicion of drug tra cking.

Just a day later, on March 23, USECIC o cers carried out a second operation in central Torrevieja. A vehicle was stopped for driving in the wrong direction. The driver presented a suspicious image of what appeared to be a Colombian driver’s license. O cers proceeded

to search the vehicle, uncovering a dose of pink cocaine and over €1,000 in the glove compartment, along with another bag of cocaine among the passengers’ belongings.

Further inspection revealed €300 in smalldenomination bills and a hidden backpack containing one kilogram of ketamine. All four individuals—two men aged 26 and 27, and two women aged 28 and 43— were arrested for drug

tra cking. The driver faces additional charges for driving without a valid license and using a forged document.

In total, o cers seized one kilogram of ketamine, 8 grams of pink cocaine, €1,495 in cash, multiple mobile phones, and the vehicle used in the o enses.

The seven detainees have been released on bail, and the cases are now in the hands of Investigating Court No. 4 of Torrevieja.

Slovak fugitive arrested in Torrevieja during police checkpoint operation

A 41-year-old Slovak national, wanted by authorities in his home country, was arrested in Torrevieja during a police operation carried out by the Civil Guard on March 29.

The man was the subject of a European arrest warrant and is now in custody awaiting extradition.

The arrest occurred during a routine preventative operation in one of Torrevieja’s main leisure zones, an area that sees increased activity on weekends. The Civil Guard had set up a checkpoint to monitor the movement of people and vehicles entering the port district. During the operation, o cers noticed a vehicle whose driver attempted to avoid the checkpoint.

Acting swiftly, the patrol intercepted the car and identi ed two individuals

inside. Upon verifying their documents, o cers discovered that the passenger was the subject of an active European arrest warrant issued by Slovak judicial authorities. Further investigation con rmed that the fugitive had been residing in Spain since mid-2024, possibly to evade law enforcement in his home country.

The man was taken into custody without incident and later brought before Central Investigative

Court No. 2 of Spain’s National Court. Following a preliminary hearing, the judge ordered the individual to be held in custody while extradition proceedings to Slovakia are carried out.

The operation highlights the e ectiveness of targeted policing strategies in high-tra c public areas and underscores the Civil Guard’s ongoing e orts to ensure public safety while collaborating with international judicial authorities.

Six arrested in €19 million cryptocurrency scam targeting over 200 victims

In a major joint operation, Spain’s National Police and Civil Guard have dismantled a criminal organization that defrauded more than €19 million from 208 victims through fake cryptocurrency investments. Six people, aged between 34 and 57, were arrested in Alicante, Torrevieja, Santa Pola, and Villajoyosa, including the group’s ringleader.

The investigation began in Granada after a victim reported losing €624,000. Authorities uncovered a sophisticated scheme involving fake online investment platforms, AIgenerated advertisements featuring impersonated celebrities, and elaborate psychological manipulation.

Using targeted algorithms, the group selected victims based on their online pro les and served them personalized ads promising high, risk-free returns. Once hooked, victims made initial small investments, often receiving fabricated pro ts to build trust.

The scammers, posing as nancial advisors—or even romantic interests— then pushed for larger investments, often convincing victims to transfer all their savings into cryptocurrency.

When victims tried to withdraw funds, they encountered endless delays and excuses. The scam escalated further when the same criminals re-approached victims, posing as “recovery agents” or fake Europol o cers, claiming the lost funds had been recovered— but required additional payments, such as taxes or

legal fees, to be released.

The criminal network operated with a global digital infrastructure, creating dozens of shell companies and using multiple false identities— over 50 in the case of the leader alone. During raids, police seized mobile phones, computers, hard drives, fake documents, and a simulated weapon.

The organization’s leader has been remanded in custody, and the investigation remains open, with suspects identi ed abroad and further arrests expected.

Vandalism at Torrevieja lighthouse blamed for fishing boat collision

In a signi cant step toward enhancing public safety, Torrevieja’s mayor, Eduardo Dolón, along with Councillor for Security and Emergencies Federico Alarcón and Chief of Police Alejandro Morer, o cially presented 17 brand-new vehicles for the Local Police. The event took place at Paseo Vista Alegre on [insert date here], marking a major investment in modernizing law enforcement resources and improving policing capabilities across the city.

The initiative comes with a total investment of €1,147,660.80, structured through a four-year leasing contract at an annual cost of €286,915.20. The eet includes a combination of hybrid SUVs, vans, an all-terrain pickup for the Environmental Group, and general service cars equipped with LED warning lights and police insignia. These vehicles are designed to optimize response times, enhance operational e ciency, and provide better support to o cers in the eld.

The awarded company, TRANSTEL, has also provided additional equipment as part of the contract, including a high-quality workshop tool kit, portable battery starters, and xed/portable vehicle chargers. These enhancements will further improve the functionality and readiness of the police force, ensuring they have the tools needed for e ective law enforcement.

Mayor Dolón highlighted the city council’s continued commitment to strengthening the police force, not just by upgrading

its eet but also by increasing personnel. Over the past two years, the force has expanded signi cantly, and the goal is to reach 200 o cers by 2027. This growth aligns with Torrevieja’s broader strategy to enhance security and provide a safer environment for both residents and the thousands of tourists who visit each year.

By investing in modern resources and a stronger police presence, Torrevieja rea rms its dedication to public safety and community well-being.

Man arrested in Elche for vandalism of local businesses

On April 9, 2025, the National Police in Elche arrested a 63-year-old man in connection with a prolonged campaign of vandalism and defamation targeting a local advisory rm. The suspect is accused of painting o ensive and damaging gra ti in various locations throughout the city over the past several months, in icting both nancial losses and reputational harm on the business.

The investigation began after the rm’s manager led multiple complaints, reporting repeated instances of slanderous messages appearing on walls near the company’s o ce and across di erent parts of Elche. The local police’s Gra smo and Vandalism division took over the case, and investigators determined that the gra ti incidents were all carried out by the same person. The messages, which included personal insults and defamatory

claims, were strategically placed in less-tra cked areas and painted during the night to avoid detection.

After analyzing surveillance footage and conducting interviews with residents and nearby business owners, police were able to identify the suspect. Further investigation revealed that the man owned a business in the same sector and had a past professional connection to an employee at the targeted rm, suggesting a possible motive rooted in personal or professional con ict.

The estimated cost of cleaning and restoring the a ected properties exceeds €1,000, in addition to the unquanti able damage to the rm’s reputation. The suspect now faces charges of defamation, slander, and property damage.

This case has resonated with the local community, drawing attention to the serious consequences of

seemingly minor acts of vandalism. It also highlights the role that citizen cooperation played in solving the case. Authorities praised members of the public who provided valuable information, underlining the importance of community vigilance in preserving public order and supporting local businesses.

The National Police, in coordination with the Elche Local Police, have con rmed that the investigation is ongoing. They are working to determine whether the suspect acted alone or if others may have been involved in similar incidents elsewhere.

This arrest underscores the broader social and economic impact of vandalism and serves as a clear message that such acts will be pursued and prosecuted. Local o cials hope the case will deter future incidents and reinforce the need for respect toward public and private property.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LAKES

The Torrevieja pink lake and the green lagoon of La Mata have been used for centuries, in the production of salt. After the Christian Conquest in the 13th Century the city of Torrevieja had not yet been founded, and the salt ats were known as Salinas Mayores.

On at least two occasions an attempt was made to create a sh pond, though without success. At rst, the salt was exported from the small jetty located in front of the Torre de la Mata. In the 19th Century it was decided to build a new pier in front of the Old Tower, which would be the origin of the current port and city of Torrevieja. At present, and since 1973 surprising as it may seem, the salt produced in the Salinas de Torrevieja comes from the Cabezo de la Sal of Pinoso (Alicante). Between 1970 and 1972, a 50km pipeline was built to transport brine to Torrevieja because the concentration of salt in Pinoso is greater than that of seawater, thus increasing the production of salt.

Two Brits arrested in El Campello for suspected car break ins

In the early hours of last Wednesday morning, local police in El Campello arrested two British men during a routine tra c stop on Camino de la Tocha, uncovering a suspicious collection of tools believed to be intended for vehicle burglary. The o cers became wary when the occupants of the car displayed visible nervousness, prompting a more thorough inspection of the vehicle.

Inside, police discovered a range of items typically associated with vehicle theft. Among the tools seized were a lock pick, a car key, a small video camera, an OBD reader commonly used to detect mechanical faults, and a wireless signal detector that may be used to block or intercept frequencies. Additional items included gloves, black caps, a neck covering, packing tape, several screwdrivers— some shaped like picks—and a hammer.

Police believe these tools could be used to manipulate vehicle locks

by mimicking the pattern of a legitimate key, allowing unauthorized entry into cars. Their presence, paired with the suspects’ behavior, raised immediate red ags.

Further compounding the situation, a small quantity of marijuana was found on the men, and the driver tested positive for drug use. As a result, both individuals were taken into custody and handed over to the Civil Guard. Authorities have launched a broader investigation to determine whether the pair is linked to any ongoing vehicle thefts in the region.

This incident highlights growing concerns over

organized vehicle-related crime and the ease with which advanced tools can be used for illicit purposes. Local law enforcement has reiterated the importance of community vigilance and the value of reporting suspicious behavior.

As investigations continue, authorities are urging residents to remain alert and take extra precautions to protect their vehicles, particularly in areas vulnerable to theft.

, residents can anticipate a safer, more e cient, and better-connected city that continues to prioritize the needs of its community.

GBP

This week, US president Trump’s “Liberation Day” global tari announcements on Wednesday sent shockwaves through the market worldwide. Most major stock markets plunged with some citing that tari s of this nature haven’t been implemented in 100 years.

The UK has been hit with a 10% retaliatory tari – the minimum percentage that Trump has imposed on countries with an import/ export trade imbalance with the US.

Signi cant currency volatility has taken place, generally the lower level tari -hit countries have fared better than some with higher tari s. These would include many Asian countries with some seeing levies up to 50%.

As a result, GBP is seeing mixed reactions to its currency counterparts. For example, GBP/ AUD has jumped by up to 5 cents since the beginning of the week and now marks a fresh 9-year high on the pairing. Similar moves also happened against NZD and ZAR to name a few.

Separately, markets also continued to digest the impact of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Spring Statement, with attention now shifting to how those changes will lter through the economy. Reeves’ announcements included signi cant cuts to the welfare budget, reiterated her promise to cut the administrative budgets of government departments, and committed to an extra £2.2bn towards defence spending over the next year.

Sterling is also reacting to last week’s in ation data after CPI came in lower than the 3.0% expected at 2.8%. With market expectations for year-end in ation now revised down from 3.7% to 3.2%, continued lower-than-expected in ation could act as a drag on sterling strength over the medium term if it impacts the forecasts for the Bank of England’s interest rate easing cycle.

EUR Europe has been hit with 20% retaliatory tari s from the US this week. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen has said “it was a major blow to the world economy and the consequences will be dire for millions of people”.

Despite concerns of how this will impact the already sluggish growth the bloc is experiencing, the single currency has generally faired quite well against most major currencies. EUR/USD has gained 3 cents this week which takes it to the best time to trade since September 2024.

In other news, the eurozone started the week with a positive surprise from Germany, when retail sales surged to 4.9%, beating the previous 3.3% reading. German preliminary Consumer Price Index (CPI) in ation data was released on Monday morning where CPI increased by 0.3% month-on-month.

Also on Monday morning, French far-right leader Marine Le Pen was found guilty of embezzling EU funds. Consequently, she has been given a ve-year ban on running for o ce, with immediate e ect, taking her out of the 2027 Presidential election race, causing some market volatility for the euro throughout the week.

Finally, on Tuesday, the annual CPI in ation rate ash estimate was released, showing a decrease to 2.2%, down from 2.3% in February, aligning with market expectations.

Healthcare advocates rally in Torrevieja to demand better funding and services

On the occasion of World Health Day, representatives from the Platform for Quality Public Healthcare in the Valencian Community gathered outside the Patricio Pérez Health Center in Torrevieja to raise awareness and call for urgent improvements in regional healthcare services. The event, which drew several dozen supporters, focused on longstanding concerns about underfunding and lack of investment in public health infrastructure across the region.

Organizers used the symbolic date to highlight what they describe as “interdepartmental underfunding” in the Valencian Community’s public health system. Their demands included increased nancial resources, enhanced sta ng levels, and accelerated infrastructure development to better meet the needs of local residents.

A key issue raised was the continuing deterioration of the La Loma Health Center in Torrevieja. Just weeks ago, the Workers’

Commissions (CCOO) union voiced renewed frustration over poor conditions and ongoing de ciencies at the facility. According to the union and platform members, the center is overwhelmed and lacks adequate resources to serve the population e ectively.

Another major concern is the absence of funding for critical infrastructure projects in the Torrevieja Health Department area. Activists pointed to the long-promised, yet still unbudgeted, second health center for Orihuela Costa — a facility considered essential by both residents and healthcare professionals due to the area’s growing population. Despite repeated calls from the community, the project remains stalled without an assigned budget.

Additionally, no budget allocation has been earmarked for the longdiscussed expansion of the Torrevieja University Hospital. The hospital, which serves a wide regional catchment area, is reportedly

operating near capacity and in need of additional space, sta , and specialized services to maintain quality care standards.

Speakers at the rally emphasized that these gaps in healthcare provision are symptomatic of broader systemic neglect. They argued that residents in the Vega Baja region, which includes Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa, are being underserved compared to other areas in the Valencian Community.

The Platform for Quality Public Healthcare pledged to continue organizing and voicing concerns until regional authorities commit to equitable healthcare funding and service improvements. As pressures on local facilities continue to grow, the movement is calling for immediate political attention and transparent investment planning to protect what they describe as the basic right to accessible, high-quality public healthcare for all.

New 640-space smart parking lot opens in Torrevieja port leisure area

Torrevieja has taken a major step forward in the development of its new port leisure area with the opening of a largecapacity smart parking facility. As construction on the expansive entertainment and hospitality zone progresses, this newly completed parking lot marks the first supporting infrastructure to become operational.

Opened today, the facility provides 640 parking spaces and is designed to serve both short-term visitors and long-term users once the leisure area is fully operational. Among the total, 18 spaces are allocated for electric vehicles and include charging points, while 20 spots are designated for people with reduced mobility—two of which also offer EV charging.

The parking lot is operated by Telpark, the company awarded the management contract. It introduces a smart access system based on license plate recognition, allowing for seamless entry and exit without the need for physical tickets. According to a statement from Telpark, this system enhances efficiency and promotes sustainability by minimizing resource use and improving user flow.

The smart features extend to payment as well. Drivers can manage their parking stay through the Telpark mobile app, enabling fast, contactless transactions and access to special offers through the platform’s promotions.

Ahead of the opening, Torrevieja Mayor Eduardo Dolón met with

Telpark representatives alongside several councilors, including Rosario Martínez (Tourism and Commerce), Federico Alarcón (Openings and Activities), and Gitte Lund (International Residents). The meeting focused on final coordination following the recent completion of renovation work on the access roads and the surrounding roundabout.

This parking facility is a significant milestone in the transformation of Torrevieja’s port into a modern hub for leisure and tourism. As further stages of the project are completed, the lot will serve as a vital support system for the future restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues expected to open in the area.

SMART FUNERAL PLANNING: Regulated Vs Unregulated

In uncertain times, guarantee your funeral plan is safe

Expats across Spain are considering a pre-paid Funeral Plan, and many are wondering how they can choose a reliable funeral plan provider.

While it’s not mandatory to buy a plan from a UK regulated provider, here are some important points to consider.

Since July 2022, any funeral plan provider which offers a plan with a UK funeral option, is legally required to be regulated in the UK, whether they operate in the UK, Spain, or

even Australia and regardless of where the funeral eventually takes place. For the customers of regulated plan providers, this means extra protection.

Extra Protection - NO Extra Cost

With a funeral plan from a UK regulated provider, not only do plan holders benefit from having a funeral plan which covers them in Spain and the UK, they also receive financial protection from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

You may have heard of the FSCS, it’s the same scheme that safeguards all UK bank ac-

counts for up to £85,000. With FSCS protection, in the unlikely event of a regulated funeral plan provider’s failure, plan holders are guaranteed to receive either an equivalent funeral plan or financial compensation at the market value at the time. The FSCS ensures that firms handle consumers’ money responsibly to deliver funeral services promised.

Trust Funds Are Not All the Same A trust fund on its own does NOT guarantee financial protection. Many providers, both regulated and unregulated, use trusts to hold funds invested by plan holders to eventually pay for funeral services.

Thankfully, UK regulated funeral plan providers MUST have their trust funds based in the UK and must hold at least 100% of the amount it would cost to deliver the funeral when it’s needed. On the other hand, unregulated funeral plan providers may not have a trust fund at

“Always

Look For This Symbol”

all, or they could have trust funds that are left exposed to abuse and financial mismanagement. For example, they may not hold enough money for the funerals in the future, and some unregulated providers have their trust funds established offshore in locations like Gibraltar.

You get assurance from a UK regulated provider that they are under strict financial control rules and critically for plan holders, under the protection of the FSCS.

Bigger For A Reason

In Spain, anyone can set themselves up and sell funeral plans. Recently, we’ve seen where that can lead. When it comes to choosing a funeral plan, look for a provider you can rely on to be operating not just next year, but for the next 20 years. Ask them how long they have been helping families and how

their money is managed. Ideally, you want a provider that has a dedicated team that you can trust will answer the call and be on hand to support your loved ones.

Ask These 3 Critical Questions:

How long they have been providing funeral plans?

Where is the trust fund administered? (some are based offshore)

Are they a regulated funeral plan provider? (look for the FSCS symbol)

Tragic helicopter crash in New York Claims six lives

Six people, including ve Spanish nationals from the same family, lost their lives on Thursday afternoon when a helicopter plunged into the Hudson River in New York. The crash, which occurred during daylight hours in the U.S. and late at night in Spain, has left both nations in mourning.

The Spanish victims were a married couple and their three children, aged between seven and eleven, who had been enjoying a family

holiday in the city. Rescue teams recovered the last of the bodies—belonging to the 21-year-old pilot— trapped in the partially submerged wreckage.

New York Mayor Eric Adams con rmed the fatalities, stating that two of the tourists were transported to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to their injuries. The remaining four occupants are believed to have died on impact with the water, according

to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Mayor Adams extended his condolences to the victims’ families and con rmed that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an o cial investigation into the cause of the crash. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also expressed her sorrow, saying, “Six innocent souls have lost their lives and we pray for them and their families.”

Breakthrough blood test offers reliable early detection of Alzheimer’s

A joint study by Spanish and Swedish researchers has led to a major clinical breakthrough: the development of a highly reliable blood test capable of detecting Alzheimer’s disease at a very early stage. The ndings, published in Nature Medicine, center on levels of the protein biomarker p-tau217, which can indicate whether a person is likely to develop the disease—potentially transforming early diagnosis and treatment.

The test, developed by scientists from the Pasqual Maragall Foundation and Barcelona’s Hospital del Mar Research Institute in collaboration with Sweden’s University of Gothenburg and Lund University, demonstrated 90% accuracy in trials involving 1,767 individuals across hospitals in Spain, Sweden, and Italy.

Using an automated

blood test, researchers established two key threshold levels for the p-tau217 biomarker. If levels fall below the lower limit, Alzheimer’s can be ruled out. If they exceed the higher limit, a positive diagnosis is indicated. Intermediate results signal a possible risk and should be con rmed through further testing, such as a PET scan or lumbar puncture.

However, lead researcher Marc Suárez-Calvet emphasizes the importance of proper clinical context: “The results must always be interpreted by a neurologist or a specialized healthcare professional, after a full neurological assessment— not in isolation.”

The test could soon be implemented as a routine part of Spanish clinical practice. Its simplicity and accessibility—able to be carried out in any standard clinical laboratory—pave

the way for widespread screening and more equitable access to early detection and care. Researchers also highlight the test’s a ordability, estimating it to be 60–80% cheaper than existing diagnostic methods.

This innovation holds particular signi cance in Spain, where Alzheimer’s a ects around 800,000 people and continues to rise with an aging population. Existing diagnostic tools like PET scans and lumbar punctures are costly, invasive, and not universally accessible— making this new method a potential game-changer in managing the disease.

By enabling earlier diagnosis, the blood test allows for timely application of existing palliative treatments, which can help slow the progression of symptoms and improve patients’ quality of life.

Northern Bald Ibis on brink of extinction after shocking killings

The northern bald ibis (Geronticus eremita), a striking black bird with a vivid orange curved beak, has become the centre of outrage in Spain after the killing of six individuals in recent years. Five were shot in Extremadura in 2019, with the trial of the alleged perpetrators still awaiting sentencing. A sixth was gunned down with a pellet ri e at the end of last year— though the crime was only o cially reported this week.

The ibis eremita is one of the most endangered birds in Europe. Its population is so fragile that each loss is considered a severe blow to conservation e orts. The killings have sparked widespread calls for prison sentences, as experts and conservationists emphasize just how critical the survival of this species has become.

E orts to save the ibis are extraordinary. To preserve their migratory instincts and prevent inbreeding, young birds are raised by human ‘foster mothers’ in Austria. These caretakers—such as Helena and Barbara—accompany the birds on a 50-day migratory journey to southern Spain, ying in paramotors to guide ocks of over 30 birds to their new home near Vejer and

Barbate in Cádiz province.

This complex rewilding project is grounded in the concept of “imprinting,” a phenomenon described by Nobel laureate Konrad Lorenz in 1948, where newborn animals bond with the rst moving gure they see.

“There are lms about this— it’s not fantasy,” says Alfonso Marzal, zoology professor at the University of Extremadura.

Upon arrival, the ibises join 250 sedentary members of the species in three established colonies, where they begin to breed and adapt. Volunteers go as far as wearing black clothing and orange beak headpieces to safely interact

with the birds and monitor their health and behavior.

There is hope that one day the ibis will reclaim Extremadura as part of its natural range.

“Extremadura could be the ideal habitat for them,” says Miguel Ángel Quevedo, a veterinarian from the Zoobotánico de Jerez, which supports the recovery program.

“It’s not unthinkable that one day they’ll settle there again.” But for that to happen, the killings must stop. In the face of such meticulous and devoted conservation work, each senseless act of violence against the species pushes the northern bald ibis closer to the edge of extinction.

Understanding migraines

fruit... he’d even brought crates with him. While he was there one Sunday, I asked him if he could help me move a few pieces of furniture the next week; I saw his face contort, and he said he’d help me the following weekend... Well, the next weekend comes and he’s cleaned me out of fruit, and also does not turn up. I saw him in the Bar and reminded him that I could still do with his help; he gave me the flannel again about coming round at the weekend, and then didn’t turn up.

I guess the warning signs might have been that the guy visits the Bar by himself, and is so rude that he won’t even say hello to you; until he wants something from you. I know many users and abusers like this....and I give them a wide berth. Single, older ladies should be especially careful of these sweet-talkers who can easily worm their way in, and take advantage in other ways. Well done for recognising him for the person he is...hold onto your figs next time and tell him to clear off.

I meet lots of lovely people of all ages at my local Bar. For some time now, this younger man, who I guess is in his 60s has been frequenting the Bar by himself. One time I went and took a bag of figs, and other fruit from the many trees in my garden, and gave them out to the people at the Bar; there are so many I cannot eat them all myself. This man, who never speaks to me otherwise, took three bags and then starts chatting to me. I was skeptical because any other time he just looks through me like I don’t exit; he even sneered at me once when I said hello. It’s not that I want the attention of course, but everyone else I meet in life are so different. Like an idiot, I let myself get talked into this guy coming round in his car to my house to help himself to the excess fruit on my land. He was so different to the person who used not to acknowledgement me in the Bar. However, I should have listened to my intuition; this guy chatted me up for one sole reason...he wanted my figs! He buttered me up like a kipper, and came round regularly to my house to flatter me, and then help himself to the figs and citrus WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. Migraines are more than just headaches—they’re chronic, often severe, and can cause throbbing pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light, typically on one side of the head. Around 12% of the U.S. population su ers from migraines, though their exact cause remains unknown.

Experts believe a mix of brain structure, neurotransmitter activity, and hormones may play a role. Changes in brain regions, especially the brainstem, and the release of serotonin—a hormone that can narrow blood vessels— are linked to migraine symptoms. Genetics also appear to in uence your risk. Studies show 30% to 60% of migraine su erers have a family history of the condition.

Migraines can a ect anyone, but people assigned female at birth are twice as likely to experience them, potentially due to uctuations in estrogen. They are most common between the ages of 30 and 40 and often decline after menopause.

Several triggers and risk factors can worsen or initiate migraines. These include dehydration, skip-

ping meals, consuming foods like aged cheeses or chocolate, exposure to strong odors or ashing lights, and changes in weather. Hormonal changes during menstruation or due to contraceptives can also be a factor, as can poor sleep, overuse of pain medications, and mood disorders like anxiety and depression. Stress is one of the most common triggers, with nearly 80% of migraine su erers reporting higher levels of stress than non-su erers.

Managing migraines often starts with identifying personal triggers and making lifestyle adjustments to reduce their frequency and severity.

Sharp rise in alcohol-related road deaths in Spain sparks urgent call to lower legal limit

Alcohol-related road fatalities continue to rise in Spain, with new research revealing a worrying surge in deadly accidents caused by drunk drivers and pedestrians. A report from the University of Valencia highlights the urgent need for legislative action, urging Congress to fast-track a bill to lower the legal alcohol limit for drivers from 0.25 milligrams per litre of breath (0.5 grams per litre of blood) to just 0.1 milligrams (0.2 grams in blood).

The report offers a stark comparison: in 2022, 312 people lost their lives in alcohollinked road incidents—an increase of 39% compared to 2018. That’s 87 more deaths in just four years. Not only are alcohol-related accidents becoming more frequent, they now account for 18% of all fatal crashes in Spain—five percentage points higher than in 2018. Alarmingly, one in three drivers killed in crashes tested positive for alcohol, according to autopsies conducted by the Institute of Toxicology.

The trend goes beyond fatalities.

Between 2018 and 2022, drinkrelated accidents rose by 20%, with 4,283 cases recorded in 2022. The number of victims— dead or injured—also climbed by 16%, totalling 6,481 that year.

“Even small amounts of alcohol impair critical driving skills— vision, coordination, reaction time, decision-making, and more,” said Luis Montoro, the lead author of the study. He stressed that the data show clear scientific justification for stricter limits.

The proposed reduction to 0.1 milligrams per litre could be a game-changer for road safety. Drivers who consume alcohol within the current legal limit are still three times more likely to die behind the wheel than those who haven’t consumed any alcohol.

The report draws on the success stories of Sweden and Norway, where such a limit has been in place for over three decades.

Following its introduction, Sweden saw a 12% drop in injury crashes, an 8% decrease in fatal accidents, and a 16% fall in positive breathalyser tests.

Today, these Nordic countries report just 22 road deaths per million inhabitants—63% lower than Spain’s 36 per million.

Despite Spain having one of the lowest road fatality rates in the EU, experts warn that without decisive action, progress will stall. The researchers behind the report are calling not only for the immediate approval of the new legal limit, but also for complementary strategies: more frequent roadside alcohol and drug tests, especially in urban areas, stricter penalties for drivers under the influence of multiple substances, and mandatory rehabilitation programs for habitual drinkers.

Director of the Spanish Traffic Authority (DGT), Pere Navarro, echoed this sense of urgency during the study’s presentation: “Reducing the drink-driving limit is not just a legal move—it’s a moral obligation to those who’ve lost their lives and to families still suffering the consequences. It’s time to act. A 0.1 milligram limit effectively means zero, and that’s where we must go.”

Landmark court ruling awards €545,000 to injured E-Scooter rider in Spain

A court in Illescas, in the Spanish province of Toledo, has ordered a van driver to pay €545,000 in compensation to an electric scooter user who sustained life-altering injuries after being struck while the vehicle was reversing. The accident, which occurred on 6 June 2022, left the 44-year-old victim with severe traumatic brain injuries, despite wearing a helmet at the time.

The victim underwent emergency surgery, endured months of hospitalisation, and has faced a long and arduous rehabilitation process. According to his legal representative, brain injury specialist Abelardo Moreno, the ruling marks a signi cant milestone in the legal recognition of the rights of electric scooter users in Spain.

The repercussions of the crash have been described as “devastating.” The man now su ers from serious and permanent physical and cognitive impairments, including mobility issues, memory loss, and di culty performing everyday tasks. These consequences have not only altered his personal life but also severely impacted his ability to work and live independently.

His family spent months battling the van driver’s insurer, insisting it accept full civil liability for the accident. The legal argument focused on the van driver’s negligence during the reversing manoeuvre, which was ultimately deemed the decisive factor in the incident. A settlement was eventually reached, resulting in the €545,000 payout.

This case comes at a time when the popularity of electric scooters is surging

across Spain. The boom has brought with it a sharp rise in accidents, many involving serious injuries. According to the Directorate-General for Tra c (DGT), common injuries include head trauma and fractures, with some cases resulting in permanent disabilities.

In cities like Malaga, electric scooters are involved in around 5% of reported tra c accidents, according to local police data—fueling ongoing debate over road safety and regulation.

In response to this growing concern, the Spanish government recently

enacted legislation reclassifying electric scooters as “light personal vehicles.” New rules include mandatory civil liability insurance, helmet use, the creation of a public registry of owners, and strict limits on where and how these vehicles can operate—banning their use on pavements and setting speed restrictions in urban areas. As legal and safety frameworks evolve, this landmark ruling reinforces the need for accountability on the roads and stronger protections for the growing number of scooter users navigating Spain’s cities.

San Miguel Golf Society at Altorreal

Dubbed the “posh” part of Murcia, Altorreal is nestled in amongst some stunning properties. Another beautiful, warm Spring day, with clear blue skies and not a whisper of a breeze.

The course on the whole was in fair condition, the fairways have recently been scarified and the greens, on the whole, left a little to be desired. The pin positions were difficult and the pins themselves don’t look like they have been moved for a while. However, it was enjoyable and good value for money. There were some trick shots in evidence (hitting the cart signs), bumper cars (buggy crashes – no damage

I hasten to add) and even a practice ball used in error at one point. The usual suspects were up to their childish tricks of hiding head covers in other people’s bags also… (you know who you are).

The yellow tees were well back which we feel contributed to a lack of highs scores today –however, here goes the results:

Gold: Gavin Parke (34 points)

Silver: Ivan Hanak (32 points)

Bronze: Carmel McCann (35 points and best score of the day)

Two “Twos” this week shared between Gavin Parke and Phil de Lacy (welcome back) and Nearest the Pins were Gavin

Parke, Phil de Lacy, Steve Webb and Greame Millington. John Osborne winning the football card with Fulham and Robin Eastman taking the “McBride Bottle”.

Next week we head north to Font del Llop, which was rained off the last time we were due to play – that seems unlikely next week with how the weather has improved.

Winners picture (L- R) Gavin Parke (Gold), Robin Eastman (McBride Bottle), Lee Eastman (Captain), Ivan Hanak (Silver), Carmel McCann (Bronze) and Darren Strugnell (President doing his best impression of PBomber).
