Once again Orihuela Costa residents cheated on services

Orihuela Costa contributes €15 million more to the municipal co ers than it receives for services and infrastructure. This underfunding translates into palpable shortcomings, even more evident considering the fact that this continues year after year.

Of the €117 million the municipality receives, 45.6% (€53.3 million) comes from the coast. Furthermore, if municipal tax revenue is included, the percentage rises to 63%, accounting for €13 million out of a total of €21 million.

Meanwhile, of the €117 million spent, only 33% (€38 million) is attributable to the coast.

The income statement shows an imbalance of around 15 million euros, highlighting services that are particularly underfunded in terms of budget compared to the rest of the municipality, such as Education, Social Welfare, Festivities and Sports, this is according to an analysis carried out by the residents’ association Unidos por la Costa.

This amount, in the opinion of the neighbourhood organisation, is what should be used annually to improve basic services and coastal infrastructure, until the budget is balanced.

More and more residents are calling for the independence of Orihuela Costa as a remedy for the serious de ciencies su ered in the basic services and infrastructure. In

the last municipal elections, local pro-independence party (PIOC) was the majority choice among residents who exercised their right to vote on the coast.

Unidos por la Costa insists that the Coast’s revenues are su cient to support a decentralised management that recognises the identity and autonomy of the coast.

Conversely, it wonders whether the urban centre of Orihuela would in fact be able to withstand segregation. It claims that for years Orihuela´s accounts have been in ated by revenue generated by the coast, and yet its shortcomings are evident.

In addition, the population of the coast is growing, unlike that of the urban centre, which would increase this gap. An expansion in the registered population— which di ers greatly from the actual population—and in the

census population would make the underfunding even more serious.

The municipality has very di erent demographic, social, and economic characteristics, consisting of three administratively distinct areas: the urban centre, the districts and the coast, which has a transient population fuelled by residential tourism. All of this results in di erent needs and the generation of income, expenses and investments. Therefore, the neighbourhood organisation emphasises that economic decentralization would allow for the development and management of an individualised budget for each part of the municipality.

Man sets fire to three cars in Torrevieja after argument

Guardia Civil o cers have arrested a 46-year-old Spanish man for allegedly committing arson in Torrevieja. The alleged perpetrator set re to a vehicle after an argument, causing the ames to spread and a ect two other cars parked on the same street. The re resulted in a total of three cars being damaged.

The incident occurred on February 26, when the Torrevieja Civil Guard received several calls during the early hours of the morning reporting a dispute on a local street.

When o cers arrived at the scene, several witnesses told the Civil Guard that a neighbor had argued with another neighbor over the condition of the latter’s vehicle. O cers also learned that, hours later, the perpetrator returned to the scene and reiterated his threats, warning that he would burn the car.

At around 5:30am, the vehicle he had previously argued about caught re, causing the ames to spread to two other cars parked next to it. Two of them were completely burned out and

the third severely damaged. The re was eventually brought under control by re ghters.

Once the re was under control, investigators began trying to identify the perpetrator of the arson. Once o cers gathered and analysed all the evidence, they located the suspect near the re and con rmed his involvement.

The detainee, a 46-year-old Spanish man with no prior criminal record, was charged with arson. He was brought before Torrevieja Investigating Court No. 2, where he was released on bail.

St Partrick´s Day on the coast

Thousands and thousands of people ocked to Cabo Roig on Sunday to once again make the local St Patrick´s Day Parade one of the biggest and the best outside of the Emerald Isle itself. The pavements and terraces were a sea of green as people dressed to impress to honour the Patron Saint.

The Cabo Roig St Patrick’s Day parade is mainland Europe’s largest St Patrick’s Day celebration. People typically travel from Ireland and all corners of the world to attend the Irish event, and previous parades have attracted more than 25,000 partygoers.

Cabo Roig has a rich history and deep connection with many expatriate Irish folk who came to settle on the Orihuela Costa’s sunnier shores over recent years, and this year’s event brought out the best of the Irish in everyone.

The Parade began at 3pm, however the crowds began gathering hours before and local bars and restaurants

served traditional Irish fayre such as Irish stew, cabbage and bacon and colcannon. Many bars also entertained their customers with local singers and bands and the Guiness, Magners and Jameson´s was owing.

The Parade itself was led by Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, with Charlie Redmond, former Gaelic football star and iconic gure of the Dublin team, acting as Grand Marshal of the parade. He was joined by local dignitaries from the local government team and the expat communities. The procession featured more than 40 local groups of various nationalities, re ecting the multicultural nature of the celebration, and included stilt walkers, oats, musicians and dancers.

The Councillor for the Coast Manuel Mestre said: “This event represents a signi cant boost for Orihuela Costa, both from a tourism and economic perspective.” This he said came from both cultural integration and economic perspective.

The committee members have been working tirelessly over the last few months to organise this year’s parade, and just last year, Radio Orihuela awarded the parade the best organised in the Vega Baja. The parade is a testament to the hard work, fundraising, and generous contributions from local businesses and associations.

Bitcoin to be offered at BBVA

BBVA’s customers in Spain will soon be able to buy, sell, and manage bitcoin and ether transactions through the bank’s app, after the lender received the green light from the Spanish Securities and Exchange Commission (CNMV).

According to the European Markets in Cryptoassets Regulation (MiCA), banks must secure this approval if they want to o er crypto services.

“Customers in Spain will be able to manage their cryptoassets trading orders directly within the app, alongside their accounts, investments, and regular banking activities,” the bank said in a statement.

“Initially, the service will be rolled out to a small group of users and gradually extended to all private customers in Spain over the coming months.”

Along with Germany’s Deutsche Bank and France’s Société Générale, the Spanish bank is one of the front-runners in launching crypto services in Europe.

Traditional nancial institutions are increasingly embracing digital currencies, a trend supported by a growing number of regulatory frameworks in the US and Europe.

BBVA has already been o ering similar options in Switzerland and Türkiye, since 2021 and 2023 respectively. In these countries, regulatory frameworks were already in place before MiCA, the EU’s crypto regulation, fully came into e ect in December 2024.

The Spanish bank

emphasised in its statement that the new service doesn’t rely on third parties to guarantee the security of customers’ assets.

“BBVA will utilise its own cryptographic key custody platform, allowing the bank to maintain full control over safeguarding its customers’ crypto assets without relying on third parties,” it said.

BBVA added that the new service will be available for those who ask for it and clari ed that the bank is not going to o er advisory services.

Spain´s rain could end 4-year

drought

A prolonged drought that has dried up elds and led to water restrictions in Spain since 2021 may soon come to an end, thanks to recent heavy rainfall, the national weather agency AEMET said.

Comparing annual precipitation levels with rainfall over the past year, ‘we cannot speak of drought in Spain’, AEMET spokesman Ruben del Campo said during a press conference.

However, when considering a longer timeframe that factors in rainfall over the last three years, the ‘amount of rain accumulated … remains below normal’ in the country, which has been signi cantly impacted by the climate crisis.

‘With the amount of rain falling now in March, it cannot be ruled out that this situation ends up being reversed,’ the AEMET spokesman noted, adding that ‘it is probable that we emerge in March’ from the long-term drought.

Spain has already received as much rainfall in the rst nine days of March as it typically does in the entire month, he said.

The recent wet weather follows Spain’s rainiest October on record, which resulted in catastrophic oods in the eastern

Valencia region. The disaster claimed 232 lives, according to government gures. Scientists warn that human-induced climate change is intensifying extreme weather events, including prolonged droughts and severe ooding.

Union warns of more attacks on healthcare workers

On the European Day against Attacks on Healthcare Professionals, which was celebrated on 12th March, the Federation of Health and Social-Health Sectors (FSS CCOO PV) is calling on the Ministry of Health to take “more e ective and decisive” measures to combat the attacks su ered by healthcare workers.

In just two weeks, three healthcare professionals in the Vega Baja region were assaulted in September

while performing their duties.

In total 1,356 assaults were recorded in 2024, 13% more than the previous year when the gures were high. Furthermore, in 2022 and 2023, cases of violence against healthcare workers soared by 94% compared to 2019 (according to data from the regional ministry itself), consolidating an unsustainable scenario that requires immediate attention. Despite this, “ the Regional Ministry of Health

has not adopted e ective responses to guarantee safe working environments,” states the CCOO.

The union asserts that the increase in assaults is directly related to the saturation of the Valencian public health system, which su ers from overwork, progressive deterioration in service quality, di culties in ensuring proper care, endless waiting lists, delays in primary care or for diagnostic tests, among other factors.

Ryanair to switch to digital boarding passes only

Ryanair, Europe’s biggest low-cost carrier has con rmed that it will move to 100 percent paperless boarding passes to the start of its Winter schedule on 3rd Nov 2025.

This means that from Nov 2025, Ryanair passengers will no longer be able to download and print a physical paper boarding pass but will instead use the digital boarding pass generated in their “myRyanair” app during check-in.

Currently almost 80% of Ryanair’s 200m passengers already use this digital boarding pass. As a result of this customer initiative, Ryanair expects to eliminate almost all airport checkin fees from Nov 2025, as all passengers will have checked-in online/in-app to generate their digital boarding pass.

Ryanair’s move to entirely paperless boarding from Nov 2025 will enable passengers to reduce their carbon footprint by eliminating unnecessary paper, saving over 300 tonnes in paper waste each year. As well as being better for the environment, using

the myRyanair app also enhances customers’ travel experience as they bene t from a range of helpful inapp features and initiatives, especially during disruption.

These include a new ‘Order to Seat’ feature allowing passengers to order direct from their seat and get served rst, live ight information and updates, direct updates from Ryanair’s operations centre during disruption, terminal, gate and boarding status updates, real-time alternative ight options during disruption and all travel documents accessible in one convenient place.

As a result of this initiative, Ryanair expects to eliminate almost all check-in fees at airports from November 2025, as all passengers will have checked in online on the app to generate their digital boarding pass. However, Ryanair hasn’t speci cally stated how it will proceed in a situation where someone only has the paper version, but presumably the process will be slower and more complicated, and passengers may be penalised or restricted.

Ryanair CMO, Dara Brady,

said: “Ryanair is Europe’s No.1 airline for choice, low fares, and customer service. This move to 100% paperless boarding passes from November 2025 will allow us to deliver an enhanced travel experience for customers, streamlined through the myRyanair app during our less busy Winter schedule. This will be particularly useful to passengers during disruptions as it will facilitate real-time updates from our Ops Centre directly to passengers’ phones, and will also provide them with alternative ight options, and o er transfers or hotel accommodation options when necessary. Like other ticket industries (concert, sports venues, rail, etc.) there has been a massive switch to using mobile, and with almost 80% of Ryanair customers already using the myRyanair app, it is time to transition the remaining passengers to digital, which will see them reduce their carbon footprint and receive a smoother and enhanced travel experience from November 2025 as Ryanair continues to grow to 300m passengers over the next decade.”

“The right decision”

EU hits back against US tariffs

The European Commission announced on Wednesday that it would implement ‘countermeasures’ starting 1st April in response to the United States’ decision to impose 25% tari s on steel and aluminium imports.

In a statement addressing the US tari s, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said ‘We deeply regret this measure’, while announcing that Brussels plans to initiate ‘a series of countermeasures’ to address what it describes as ‘unjusti ed trade restrictions’.

‘Tari s are taxes. They are bad for business, and even worse for consumers. These tari s are disrupting supply chains. They bring uncertainty for the economy,’ von der Leyen said.

According to her estimates, the US tari s are valued at $28 billion, and the EU’s retaliatory measures will target an equivalent value of American goods.

‘The European Union must act to protect consumers and business,’ the EU’s statement read. ‘The countermeasures we take today are strong but proportionate. As the United States are applying tari s worth $28 billion, we are responding with countermeasures worth €26 billion. This matches the

economic scope of the tari s from the United States.’

The 25% tari s imposed by US President Donald Trump on steel and aluminium imports came into e ect at 5am Central European time on Wednesday, escalating tensions in the on-going trade con ict between the United States and its major trading partners.

Washington has justi ed the tari s as an e ort to safeguard the domestic steel industry and American workers amid declining production and heightened competition from abroad, particularly from Asia.

The new tari s will a ect several countries, including Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, China, Brazil and Mexico, despite last-minute e orts by some nations to secure exemptions.

This is not the rst time Trump has imposed tari s on these metals. During his rst term in 2018, similar duties on steel and aluminium prompted the EU to implement its own retaliatory tari s, which remain suspended until the end of March.

As part of a dual approach to Trump’s trade actions, von der Leyen indicated that Brussels would allow the current suspension to lapse

once it expires.

‘For the rst time, these rebalancing measures will be implemented in full. Tari s will be applied on products ranging from boats to bourbon to motorbikes,’ the commission stated.

Despite the tough stance, von der Leyen signalled the EU’s willingness to seek a diplomatic resolution. ‘We are ready to engage in meaningful dialogue. I have entrusted Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic to resume his talks to explore better solutions with the US,’ she said.

Early last week, Sefcovic criticised the United States for not‘engaging’with the EU. However, European o cials believe that by threatening countermeasures, they can pressure the US administration to return to negotiations. By midweek the commission formally initiated the process to enforce these countermeasures. The rst stage involves a ‘two-week stakeholder consultation’ to ensure the selection of ‘the right products’ for tari s while minimising the impact on EU businesses and consumers.

Elon Musk shows support for far-right Vox

Elon Musk is taking a stand in Spanish politics. The richest man in the world, with a fortune valued at $385 billion, has expressed his support for Spain’s far-right party Vox through a message on his social network X, the former Twitter. “Vox will win the next election,” the tycoon wrote to his 218.6 million followers. He was commenting on a message from another user that included a video in which U.S. President Donald Trump is seen greeting the leader of the Spanish party, Santiago Abascal, at CPAC, an ultraconservative conference held outside Washington DC.

Elon Musk, the main donor to Trump’s presidential campaign last year and a close ally of the president, is also becoming increasingly active in international politics. He has already shown his support for other European far-right parties; he has a very good relationship with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and has campaigned for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).

Regardless of whether the Tesla and SpaceX boss is liked or disliked, Musk has an enormous capacity to spread and amplify disinformation through his social media platform, as he has done repeatedly in the United States. The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer (a preferred target of Musk’s attacks), have openly criticised him for this. Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, also called for rebellion against the “techno-caste” this month with a speech in which he made clear references to Musk’s support for the German hard right.

Vox has been cultivating a relationship with ‘Trumpism’ for years, and believes that the time has come to reap the rewards. The party’s leader, Santiago Abascal, is convinced that he can ride the same populist wave that has returned Trump to the White House, and that his own party can signi cantly

erode the Spanish mainstream conservatives of the Popular Party (PP). For the moment, the polls in Spain seem to support this view.

After traveling to Washington on January 20 for Donald Trump’s inauguration, which he was ultimately unable to witness in person due to limited attendance, Abascal recently participated, for the second consecutive year, in the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the great conclave of Trumpism, which was also attended by other leaders of the European far right.

Donald Trump closed the CPAC conference and included in his long list of greetings and thanks “the leader of Spain’s Vox party, Santiago Obiscal [sic]. Thank you, Santiago. Thank you very much.” Abascal stood up from his seat and Trump added: “You’re doing great.” The U.S. president uses the phrase as a frequent tagline, but the leaders and followers of Vox quickly celebrated it like a medal.

DISCOVER THE SPECTACULAR PANTANO DE ELCHE

Following last week’s article about the El Cau Museum, today we take you down the round from there to discover another delightful treasure! The Elche Dam known as the Pantano de Elche was built in the 17th century on the Vinalopó River as a means of retaining its waters. It was the first to be built in Europe in the shape of a vault, and is even considered the first arch-shaped dam built since Roman times. Today it has become a popular hiking route for lovers of nature, due to its tranquil and picturesque ambiance. Waterfalls, streams, wooden bridges and local wildlife are some of the highlights you’ll

see along the way. The best place to park up and start is at Explanada del Pantano de Elche, Partida Carrus, 1256A, 03207, Alicante, where there will be signposts to guide you along the trail. Once you reach the dam, there are benches to stop for a rest, before continuing on your route (pack a cold drink and sandwich). It is quite a steep climb to see the view at the top, though well worth the effort! Dogs are allowed on a lead, though unfortunately this route is not wheelchair accessible. Guardamar del Segura cancels lifeguard service due to budget errors

The Guardamar del Segura City Council has officially canceled the tender for the town’s lifeguard service after identifying several errors in the contract specifications. One of the key issues was that the proposed pricing did not account for the updated interprofessional minimum wage for 2025, which ultimately skewed the contract budget.

According to a decree

issued by the Department of Contracting, the errors came to light following inquiries from interested parties through the Public Sector Contracting Platform. As a result, on March 6, 2025, the municipal Technical Engineer, who drafted the Technical Specifications Document, issued a report recommending a review and modification of certain aspects of the contract.

Despite this setback, the

lifeguard service remains scheduled to begin on June 15th and run until October 15th, extending beyond the traditional summer months to cover the town’s extended bathing season. The contract also includes an adapted bathing service designed to assist individuals with disabilities and reduced mobility, ensuring accessibility for all visitors to Guardamar beach.

The Euro has recently capitalised on its stability compared to the US Dollar and GBP, and the single currency is trading strongly.

Last week, Germany announced a scal debt break deal anticipated to add up to 1% to German GDP through spending on both defence and infrastructure.

Germany’s Chancellor in waiting, Friedrich Merz, commented, “The political developments in Europe and the world are evolving faster than we anticipated just a week ago. Germany and Europe must now undertake extraordinary e orts to ensure our defence capabilities.”

The European Central Bank (ECB) cut interest rates to 2.5% last week as expected, with monetary policymakers taking a rather hawkish tone to their direction moving forward and signalling that the central bank is nearing the end of its current monetary easing cycle. This may bring more certainty to investors considering investing in the single currency.

This week was a quiet week of economic releases for the Eurozone and next week is equally set to be relatively quiet, although a notable day is Wednesday, when year-over-year consumer in ation data will be released.

GBP

GDP data released this morning showed an unexpected 0.1% contraction on a monthly basis during January. This was against a forecast of 0.1% growth and the contraction is understood to have been mainly caused by a fall in the production sector, after growth of 0.4% in December 2024.

This morning’s data release has substantiated recent concerns about the UK economy. A

report from KPMG suggested that starting salaries in the UK are falling at their fastest rate in four years and many businesses will be preparing for any potential impact of policy changes announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in her upcoming Spring Statement on Wednesday 26th March.

The Pound has been under pressure recently, particularly against the Euro, as traders sell o their Sterling. This pro t-taking has led to an increase in supply, pushing the Pound to its lowest level against the Euro in over a month during this week’s trading.

Against the dollar, however, the Pound has been slightly more stable, sitting just above 1.2900, as uncertainty surrounding tari s in the US remains prominent in news headlines. Against the Dollar, GBP is at its highest level since November 2024.

Next week (Thursday) the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee will meet and vote on its lending rate. Expectations are for a vote to hold at 4.5%.

Are you affected by a non-regulated funeral plan?

Recent reports suggest that Iberian Funeral Plans may have ceased trading, leaving customers uncertain about the security of their prepaid funeral plans. If you have been affected, we sincerely sympathise and want to help. Information about how to get hold of us can be found at the end of this article. While we are still gathering information, this situation highlights the risks of purchasing plans from unregulated providers.

Regulated Funeral Plans Offer Protection

If you have purchased a plan from a regulated provider, there is no cause for concern. In Spain, Portugal and Cyprus there are only two funeral plan providers currently operating that are regulated:

• Avalon Funeral Plans

• Golden Leaves

These companies are fully authorised and

regulated in the UK, ensuring that your investment is protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). This is the same scheme that safeguards all UK bank accounts for up to £85,000. With FSCS protection, in the unlikely event of a provider’s failure, you are guaranteed to receive either an equivalent funeral plan or financial compensation at the current market value.

An unregulated funeral plan does NOT have this protection.

What Can You Do If You Have an Iberian Plan or Another Unregulated Plan?

If you hold a funeral plan with Iberian Funeral Plans or any other unregulated provider, we strongly recommend acting quickly to secure your arrangem ents.

Shocking animal cruelty case uncovered in Los Montesinos

A disturbing case of animal cruelty has come to light in Los Montesinos, speci cally in the Los Pérez district, after a report from the Huellas Divinas association. The gruesome discovery has sparked outrage and underscored the urgent need for stronger animal welfare measures in the region.

According to Huellas Divinas, the incident involved three cats con ned in small rabbit cages, living in unsanitary conditions that posed serious health risks. Additionally, ve dogs were found in deplorable conditions—two hunting dogs were tightly chained, while two others su ered from extreme neglect. The most heartbreaking case involved an elderly dog unable to stand, raising immediate concerns about its wellbeing.

The local community and animal welfare advocates are now calling on

authorities to take swift action. Proposed steps include the immediate rescue of the a ected animals, a thorough investigation into the circumstances of their mistreatment, and the implementation of stricter penalties for those found guilty of animal cruelty.

Organizations like Huellas Divinas play a crucial role not only in rescuing abused animals but also in raising awareness about responsible pet care. They emphasize the importance of community involvement in ensuring that cases of neglect and abuse are

reported and addressed.

Concerned citizens can help by documenting evidence, reporting suspected abuse to authorities or local animal welfare groups, and spreading awareness about the importance of animal protection.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing ght for animal rights. With continued advocacy and community action, there is hope for a future where all animals are treated with the care, dignity, and respect they deserve.

Rising drug-related violence shakes Southern Spain

Southern Spain is witnessing a disturbing surge in drug-related crime, particularly in Alicante and Murcia, where drug tra cking is becoming increasingly prevalent. This escalating trend recently culminated in a violent incident in Torrevieja, a town once known for its tranquil beaches but now grappling with growing criminal activity.

On February 25, 2025, residents of La Mata, Torrevieja, reported gun re near Ciprés Street, prompting a swift police response. A joint operation involving the Local Police, undercover National Police agents, and the Civil Guard led to the arrest of ve suspects and the seizure of over 100,000 ecstasy pills—one of Spain’s largest drug busts in recent history.

Local residents had long been suspicious of activities in an underground garage, noting the frequent presence of foreign individuals engaging in

heated arguments and threats. Their growing concerns prompted them to alert authorities, leading to the successful police raid.

Among those arrested were four Algerian nationals and a Slovak man from Cartagena, Murcia, known for theftrelated crimes. Just two days before the shootout, the Slovak suspect had been arrested for theft but was released shortly after. Law enforcement had already been monitoring him for his suspected ties to an Algerian robbery gang.

Authorities have raised alarms over a worrying new trend—the fusion of traditional thieves and violent drug tra ckers, which is fueling an increase in dangerous crime networks. A senior police o cial emphasized that the sheer scale of the drug operation was concerning, but what was even more troubling was the growing violence associated with these criminals. The emergence

of **”drug ips”—violent exchanges where drugs change hands forcefully—is becoming a serious issue.

Beyond the criminal underworld, the impact of this rising drug-related violence is being felt by the entire community.

Residents now live in fear, and law enforcement faces increasing challenges in maintaining public safety. As authorities continue to combat these organized crime networks, questions remain about how to e ectively address the growing violence.

This alarming shift in Southern Spain’s criminal landscape underscores the urgent need for tighter law enforcement strategies, stronger community vigilance, and more e ective measures to curb the spread of violent drug activity. Ensuring a safer environment for all will require a concerted e ort between authorities and residents to combat these evolving threats.

SMART FUNERAL PLANNING: Regulated Vs Unregulated

In uncertain times, guarantee your funeral plan is safe

Expats across Spain are considering a pre-paid Funeral Plan, and many are wondering how they can choose a reliable funeral plan provider.

While it’s not mandatory to buy a plan from a UK regulated provider, here are some important points to consider.

Since July 2022, any funeral plan provider which offers a plan with a UK funeral option, is legally required to be regulated in the UK, whether they operate in the UK, Spain, or

even Australia and regardless of where the funeral eventually takes place. For the customers of regulated plan providers, this means extra protection.

Extra Protection - NO Extra Cost

With a funeral plan from a UK regulated provider, not only do plan holders benefit from having a funeral plan which covers them in Spain and the UK, they also receive financial protection from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

You may have heard of the FSCS, it’s the same scheme that safeguards all UK bank ac-

counts for up to £85,000. With FSCS protection, in the unlikely event of a regulated funeral plan provider’s failure, plan holders are guaranteed to receive either an equivalent funeral plan or financial compensation at the market value at the time. The FSCS ensures that firms handle consumers’ money responsibly to deliver funeral services promised.

Trust Funds Are Not All the Same A trust fund on its own does NOT guarantee financial protection. Many providers, both regulated and unregulated, use trusts to hold funds invested by plan holders to eventually pay for funeral services.

Thankfully, UK regulated funeral plan providers MUST have their trust funds based in the UK and must hold at least 100% of the amount it would cost to deliver the funeral when it’s needed. On the other hand, unregulated funeral plan providers may not have a trust fund at

all, or they could have trust funds that are left exposed to abuse and financial mismanagement. For example, they may not hold enough money for the funerals in the future, and some unregulated providers have their trust funds established offshore in locations like Gibraltar.

You get assurance from a UK regulated provider that they are under strict financial control rules and critically for plan holders, under the protection of the FSCS.

Bigger For A Reason

In Spain, anyone can set themselves up and sell funeral plans. Recently, we’ve seen where that can lead. When it comes to choosing a funeral plan, look for a provider you can rely on to be operating not just next year, but for the next 20 years. Ask them how long they have been helping families and how

their money is managed. Ideally, you want a provider that has a dedicated team that you can trust will answer the call and be on hand to support your loved ones.

Ask These 3 Critical Questions:

How long they have been providing funeral plans?

Where is the trust fund administered? (some are based offshore)

Are they a regulated funeral plan provider? (look for the FSCS symbol)

Future of Guardamar Sunday market in doubt after legal setback

The popular Sunday market in Guardamar, a beloved xture of the local community since 1993, is now facing an uncertain future following the rejection of a legalization plan by the Generalitat of Valencia. This setback, based on an environmental evaluation conducted over 18 months, could have far-reaching consequences for the hundreds of vendors and thousands of visitors who depend on the market each week.

The Guardamar market operates on non-developable land, with part of its footprint falling within the protected area of the Torrevieja and La Mata Natural Park. Despite its cultural and economic signi cance—with 600 stalls at peak seasons and 450 during winter—the market has long been at the center of a legal and environmental battle.

The Generalitat’s report raised key concerns, primarily focusing on tra c congestion caused by market activities and overlaps with protected natural areas. The evaluation criticized the proposed tra c management solutions as

inadequate, challenging the town council’s claims that the market does not interfere with the protected park boundaries.

Despite this ruling, the market continues to operate, bene ting from an injunction issued by the Valencia High Court in 2015, which allowed it to remain open while legal appeals were pending. The special plan aimed at legalizing the market is still under consideration, leaving its future hanging in the balance.

The market is a vital economic force in Guardamar, drawing large crowds every Sunday and supporting a wide array of businesses, from fresh produce vendors and clothing merchants to more than 60 restaurants serving visitors. Many local stakeholders, including José Cánovas, a businessman involved in market operations, have expressed their willingness to invest in infrastructure upgrades to meet compliance requirements. Proposed improvements include land concessions for public use and the construction of a roundabout on CV-895 to

alleviate tra c concerns.

However, critics argue that the regional government’s stance appears inconsistent, pointing to large-scale residential developments like the Raso project, which bene t from scenic views of the protected lagoon. They question why such projects are approved while the market faces potential closure.

With another large private market thriving nearby along the N-332, the demand for open-air marketplaces in the region remains strong. This only intensi es calls for a resolution that will allow the Guardamar Sunday market to continue operating while addressing legitimate environmental and tra c concerns.

As discussions and legal proceedings continue, the fate of this historic marketplace remains uncertain. The coming months will be critical in determining whether the market can secure legal recognition or if it will ultimately be forced to cease operations, marking the end of a cherished local tradition.

The Hitman´s Bodyguard

Sunday 23rd March, ITV, 11.20 pm

With his reputation in tatters after the painfully unsuccessful delivery of a distinguished Japanese client, the former triple-A protection agent, Michael Bryce, is now reduced to a mere second-class bodyguard for hire, two years after the disgraceful incident. Under those circumstances, Bryce would do anything to prove his worth, and, before long, he accepts an o er from Interpol to escort the international assassin, Darius Kincaid, from Manchester to the Hague. The task seems simple: Bryce needs to transport him from point A to point B; nevertheless, the trip to the Netherlands is long and hazardous, and Kincaid--as the only one with the guts and enough hard evidence to testify against a tyrannical Belarusian dictator--is an obvious target. Undoubtedly, it’s a tough job, as the mismatched duo will have to put aside their grudges, and race against the clock in a non-stop concerto for bullets.

“What is the V16 Emergency Beacon”?

Your tech questions answered by Brian Hoile of the Costa Blanca Technology Help Group, helping over 400 members with their PCs , smartphones and more. Group members can attend meetings in person or online using Zoom or Teams.

beacon will connect to DGT 3.0 to transmit its location in real time.

It alerts other drivers and pedestrians to the presence of a vehicle that has stopped due to an emergency. The beacon is designed to be highly visible, even in adverse weather conditions or low-light situations.

The primary purpose of the V16 beacon is to provide high visibility. Equipped with powerful LEDs, the beacon can be seen from a considerable distance, ensuring that other road users are aware of the hazard ahead. This visibility is crucial in preventing further accidents and providing a safe environment around the stopped vehicle.

The implementation of the V16 emergency beacon in Spain is scheduled to take place in two key phases:

Phase 1: During this initial phase, drivers are permitted to use either the traditional emergency triangles or the new V16 emergency beacons.

Phase 2: Starting January 1, 2026

From this date onwards, the use of the V16 emergency beacon will become mandatory for all vehicles in Spain. Traditional emergency triangles will no longer be accepted, and drivers will be required to equip their vehicles with the V16 beacon.

How to Use a V16 Emergency Beacon

• Assess the Situation: When an emergency occurs, assess the surroundings and

ensure it is safe to exit the vehicle.

Activate the Beacon: Turn on the V16 emergency beacon by pressing the power button or switch.

Place the Beacon: Place the beacon on the roof of the vehicle or at a safe distance behind the vehicle to alert oncoming traffic.

Ensure Visibility: Make sure the beacon is visible from a distance and not obstructed by any parts of the vehicle or other objects.

• Remain Safe: Stay with the vehicle if it is safe to do so or move to a safe location away from traffic.

Drivers who fail to carry a V16 beacon or use an uncertified beacon can face fines. The amount of the fine varies depending on the severity of the violation, but it generally falls within the range of 80 to 200 euros.

A V16 emergency beacon is a small, portable light that emits a bright, flashing signal and gives the vehicle’s position to the authorities using GPS. The V-16

EU takes Spain to court over discriminatory tax treatment of non-residents

The European Commission has decided to take Spain to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for its discriminatory tax treatment of nonresident taxpayers. This action follows Spain’s failure to address an infringement related to the free movement of capital, initially agged in December 2021. According to the Commission, Spain’s e orts to resolve the issue have been “insu cient.”

At the heart of the dispute is Spain’s tax legislation, which allows resident taxpayers to defer capital gains tax when payment for asset transfers is postponed for more than a year or paid in installments. This provides a cash- ow advantage. However, nonresident taxpayers must pay the tax immediately upon transfer, regardless of how they receive payment, putting them at

a nancial disadvantage.

The EU argues that this discrepancy infringes on the free movement of capital by imposing a more burdensome tax structure on nonresidents, thereby creating an unjusti ed obstacle to cross-border transactions.

Additionally, the Commission has issued a formal notice urging Spain to allow the deduction of directly related expenses when calculating withholding tax on crossborder royalty payments. Spain has two months to comply before the matter is escalated to the CJEU.

Mercadona closes 2024 with record profits amid strong growth

Spanish supermarket giant Mercadona concluded another “spectacular year” in December 2024, surpassing its own forecasts and reinforcing its leadership in the retail sector. Founder and president Juan Roig highlighted the company’s outstanding performance, emphasizing its ability to stay ahead of the competition.

The company’s nancial results re ected signi cant growth, with a turnover of 38.8 billion euros, marking a 9% increase. Pro ts surged by 37%, reaching almost 1.4 billion euros—well above the initial forecast of 1 billion. Roig attributed these impressive numbers to Spain’s booming tourism industry, which saw 100 million visitors in 2024, and the successful expansion of Mercadona in Portugal. The Portuguese market contributed 1.8 billion of the total 3.8 billion euros in revenue. “This year, for the rst time, Portugal has been pro table, and

this has bene ted our overall results,” Roig stated.

During the annual press conference, Roig took a moment to remember the victims of the ‘Dana’ tragedy, which left 224 people dead, including four of his entrepreneur friends. The catastrophic oods a ected 21 Mercadona stores, prompting the company to donate 108 million euros for reconstruction e orts.

“I still nd it hard to talk about the ‘Dana.’ It has been a particularly hard year for us,” Roig admitted.

While refraining from commenting on the potential dismissal of Carlos Mazón as president of the Valencian government, Roig criticized the delayed response to the crisis, which he said left “a million Spaniards helpless for four days.” He emphasized the need for society to re ect on the events following October 30, describing the rst days of the disaster as

“disastrous” due to the lack of agility and coordination from public administrations.

Despite the challenges, Mercadona continued to expand, creating 6,000 new jobs in 2024—4,300 in Spain and 1,700 in Portugal— bringing its total workforce to 110,000 employees. The company maintained a strong commitment to its sta , distributing 700 million euros among employees. Workers with over four years of seniority received a gross variable remuneration of 6,000 euros on March 1.

Mercadona reinvested 1.1 billion euros—equivalent to 80% of its total net pro t— back into the company, while 275 million euros were distributed as dividends among its nine shareholders. With record-breaking results and continued international success, Mercadona solidi ed its position as a dominant force in the supermarket industry.

Inditex closes another record ear with billion

Inditex, the Spanish multinational fashion group behind Zara, Stradivarius, Pull&Bear, and Bershka, has once again achieved a historic financial milestone, reporting a 9% increase in net profit, reaching almost €5.9 billion. This recordbreaking figure is attributed to strong cost control and a 7.5% increase in sales, although the latter reflects a more moderate growth rate compared to previous years.

Founded by Amancio Ortega, the company earned €38.6 billion in revenue. However, this marks the first time since the pandemic that neither sales nor profits have seen double-digit growth. Despite this, Inditex’s gross margin stood at €22.3 billion, 7.6% higher than in 2023, already accounting for 57.8% of total sales. The company also confirmed that its Spring/ Summer 2025 collections have been well received, with sales from February 1 to March 10 rising by 4% compared to the same period in 2024.

Inditex CEO Óscar García Maceiras praised the results,

stating that they reflect the company’s profitable growth, operational efficiency, and continuous innovation. To reward shareholders, the board of directors has proposed a 9% dividend increase for 2025, bringing it to €1.68 per share.

More Sales, Fewer Shops Inditex continues to pursue its investment and growth strategy, even as it reduces its number of brick-and-mortar stores. The company closed 2024 with 5,563 shops, 129 fewer than the previous year, though total retail space increased by 2%. Meanwhile, online sales exceeded €10.2 billion, making up over 26% of total revenue, compared to 25.2% in 2023.

Physical store sales grew by 5.9%, though this was two percentage points lower than in the previous year.

Zara remains Inditex’s flagship brand, with Zara Home contributing to over 70% of total turnover.

Among its other brands, Stradivarius outperformed Bershka and Oysho, growing by 14% compared to

their 11.8% growth rate.

Global Expansion and Market Performance Regionally, Spain increased its share of Inditex’s total revenue to 15%, while the rest of Europe also showed strong growth. However, the US market saw a decline from 19.6% to 18.6%, and Asia fell from 16.9% to 15.7%.

Looking ahead, Inditex plans to enter new markets in 2025, with its first stores in Iraq, Bershka expanding into Sweden, Stradivarius launching in Austria, and Oysho making its debut in the Netherlands and Germany.

Despite these expansion plans, the company’s future in the US remains uncertain. Inditex has invested heavily in its North American growth strategy, but geopolitical and tariff uncertainties under Donald Trump’s policies could complicate its plans. The fashion giant will have to carefully navigate these challenges as it continues to strengthen its position as a global retail leader.

once thought of her not having children; she would always tell us she wanted a brood. Is there anything I can do? My wife would be heartbroken.

What you can do is not interfere. You tell me that you both intervened with your daughter’s choice of boyfriend when she was 18 years old, and all it did was cause her to dig her heels in more deeply. At the time she was legally an adult, if not an experienced one. Experience has since taught her that she could not see a future with her first boyfriend, and so ended the relationship when your wife died. Life events like death can do this; we take stock of our own lives. You are right you cannot preach to her when there was an age gap between you and your wife. But, that worked didn’t it? Albeit that your life together was sadly cut short when she became ill. I would say not to cause yourselves any more strife. Your daughter is older now, and has gained more life experience. If she feels this relationship is not for her; she will end it as she did the first.

My eldest was always one to go for older men; and we didn’t have the right to say anything against it, because there was an age gap between my wife and I; however, my wife battled against their relationship from the start; our daughter was only 18 and her partner was 40. Although she knew we didn’t approve, her partner was at least a good man. After 10 years our eldest finished with her partner after her mother died; and then took up with an even older man; who is only 11 years younger than myself. Again, another good person, who clearly adores her but what man aged 56 wouldn’t adore a girl in her early 30s. Once again, I don’t feel I can say anything because my daughter is a grown adult, and is clearly suffering from losing her mother, as we all are. However, I worry that this relationship is going to go the same way. She told me that having babies is off the cards because this man already has a family of his own, and doesn’t want any more children. It’s no secret that exercise is good for you—an active lifestyle can help lower blood pressure, improve mental health, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, or a combination of both, along with two days of strength training.

For those looking for a more intense workout, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a popular option. HIIT involves short bursts of intense exercise—such as sprints or burpees—followed by periods of recovery. This type of workout o ers numerous bene ts, including improved cardiovascular health, fat loss, and muscle maintenance. However, too much HIIT can lead to burnout and injury, making it important to nd the right balance in your routine.

The Bene ts of HIIT HIIT workouts are e cient and can be completed in a shorter period of time, making them ideal for people with busy schedules. Research shows that HIIT can improve cardiovascular and metabolic health, boost cognitive function, and even reduce overall mortality risk. These workouts can also be done using

“HIIT workouts can be fun and challenge you mentally, showing that you can do hard things,” said Emily Nichols, CPT, in an interview with Health. “They are great for raising your heart rate and metabolism for a longer period of time after your workout, which results in more calories being burned.”

This phenomenon is known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC)—a state in which the body continues to burn calories for up to two hours after exercise as it returns to its pre-workout state.

How Much HIIT Is Too Much? While HIIT is bene cial, overtraining can lead to fatigue, increased injury risk, and hindered recovery. Experts recommend limiting HIIT workouts to three to four sessions per week with rest days or lower-intensity workouts in between. Balancing HIIT with strength training, mobility work, and active recovery can help optimize results while preventing burnout.

By incorporating HIIT into a well-rounded tness routine, you can maximize its bene ts without overdoing it.

Orihuela launches new exercise programme for cancer patients

In a signi cant step toward improving the well-being of cancer patients, the City Council of Orihuela has partnered with the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) to introduce a specialized exercise program at the Palacio del Agua. This initiative is designed to raise awareness, encourage healthy lifestyle habits, and provide essential support for cancer prevention through a series of campaigns organized by the AECC.

As part of this collaboration, the city has designated facilities at the Palacio del Agua and the Ociopía civic center to host these tailored exercise sessions. The program, which will run for three months at a time, is part of a broader four-year agreement aimed at supporting cancer patients through physical activity. The main focus of the initiative is to improve cardiovascular health, enhance muscle tone, and contribute to an overall better quality of life for participants. Patients will attend exercise sessions twice a week, engaging in workouts speci cally

designed to accommodate their needs and physical conditions.

The o cial launch of this program was presented by key local gures, including Health Councillor Irene Celdrán, Sports Councillor Víctor Sigüenza, AECC President in Orihuela Conchi Martínez, AECC Psychologist Ana Isabel Martínez, and José Antonio Pérez, Coordinator of AECC’s Oncology Exercise Units. During the event, Celdrán emphasized

the importance of this initiative, noting that Orihuela is the rst municipality in the Vega Baja region to implement a sports program speci cally tailored for cancer patients. This distinction makes it only the third such exercise unit in the province, attracting participants from surrounding areas who may not have access to similar resources.

Cancer patients interested in joining the program must rst

obtain medical clearance from their oncologists to ensure their suitability for participation. Once approved, they will follow an exercise routine designed to improve strength and endurance, with sessions scheduled on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. To track progress, participants will undergo assessments at the beginning, middle, and end of the program, allowing for careful monitoring of their health

improvements and tness levels.

The AECC has long emphasized the crucial role that regular physical activity plays in cancer recovery and overall well-being. Studies show that exercise can signi cantly help patients manage the physical and emotional challenges of cancer treatments while fostering longterm healthy habits. Engaging in structured physical activity can boost energy levels, alleviate treatment-related fatigue, and even reduce the risk of recurrence.

Through this innovative program, Orihuela is setting a new standard in cancer support by integrating physical activity into patient care. This initiative not only re ects the city’s commitment to public health but also serves as a model for other communities looking to enhance their resources for cancer patients. By promoting exercise and healthy living, this program has the potential to positively transform the lives of many individuals facing cancer treatment, providing them with the strength and support they need on their journey to recovery.

Rojales police seize electric scooters from underage riders near school

The Rojales Local Police have seized two electric scooters from minors aged 9 and 11 after discovering them riding dangerously near the “Poeta Miguel Hernández” Public School. The incident occurred when traffic officers stationed at school intersections received a complaint about the young riders operating the scooters in a manner that put pedestrians, parents, and themselves at risk. The children were reportedly ignoring pedestrian crossings and disregarding safety warnings from adults in the area.

Upon verifying the complaint, officers contacted the minors’ parents to inform them of the infractions. The children were found to be under the legal age to operate electric scooters, as outlined in the Municipal Ordinance on Personal Mobility Vehicles. As a result, the police confiscated the

scooters, which would only be returned once the parents or legal guardians presented the required documentation at the Local Police headquarters.

A subsequent inspection of the seized scooters revealed that one had been illegally modified, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 80 km/h, far exceeding the legal limit of 25 km/h. In both cases, the parents

were fined and warned about the dangers posed by these vehicles. Authorities stressed the importance of handling electric scooters responsibly, emphasizing that in the event of an accident, they could cause serious or even irreparable harm. The police also reminded parents that they bear legal responsibility for any infractions or damages caused by their children while using these vehicles.

Surge in tra c offences reported across Valencia in February

Tra c violations in the Valencia Community saw a signi cant increase in February, with 242 drivers facing judicial proceedings for various road safety o enses. According to the Tra c Group of the Civil Guard, these alarming gures highlight persistent issues regarding compliance with tra c laws and overall road safety.

Among the most common infractions, driving without a license or permit topped the list, with 106 o enders caught. Of these, 58 drivers had lost all their points, 10 were under temporary suspension by court order, and three had their licenses permanently revoked. Additionally, 35 individuals were found to have never obtained a valid driving license.

Another major concern was driving under the in uence, with 103 cases reported for alcohol-related o enses. Reckless driving was another pressing issue, with 15 drivers cited for dangerous behavior on the road.

Castellón, and Alicante, with Valencia reporting the highest number of alcohol-related o enses and Alicante leading in cases of unlicensed driving.

Further violations included two instances of hit-andrun incidents, three cases of extreme speeding, and 13 cases of driving under the in uence of drugs. These o enses were spread across the provinces of Valencia,

San Miguel S at Saurines de la Torre

Have you been to the new adventure park that we didn’t know existed in Murcia? Well – we did today – we have renamed Saurines de la Torre as “The Wild & Windy West Parque Aventura” with its newest ride

“The Rollercoaster Greens”….. if you’ve played there lately you will understand what I mean!

Another attraction of this new park was the weather feature with the Weather Master switching the sun on and off and the wind machine was on and off also. In all seriousness, most of the golfers had a few choice words to say about the very undulating greens and pin positions today. The course overall was lush and green –maybe pre-empting St. Patrick’s Day on Monday. Fast greens, to be sure, to be sure – especially if you didn’t putt hard enough for your ball to race up the hill onto the plateau of the green and stay there. I witnessed one

such incident of the ball rolling back down the hill three times to end up in the same position at the putter’s feet (you know who you are…). To say the day was challenging is a slight understatement.

44 set off into the desert wilderness with better weather overall than our last outing here, the scores weren’t awful and there were some fancy twos – one of which I again witnessed as a fantastic chip in off the fringe of the green on hole 2.

The category winners today were:

Gold: Steve Webb (36 points) joint best score of the day

Silver: Matt Newman (35 points)

Bronze: Ivan Hanak (36 points) joint best score of the day

The Twos Pot was shared between Paul Lambert, Tony Smale, Tommy McGinn and

Rod East. With Nearest the Pins winning a sleeve of balls for Guy Wade Palmer, Denis Ryan, Kev Allbright and Paul Guest. Our best guest and previous member, also winning a sleeve of balls, was Robert GIllies. Matt Newman also took the coveted football card with Watford (also a season ticket holder there we believe!).

Overall an enjoyable day out and already looking forward to La Serena next week.

We’d also like to say a big Get Well Soon to Norman McBride, one of our very regular players who is currently in Torrevieja Hospital. We want you back on the course soon!

Winners (and the unusual suspects) pictured (L to R) Ivan Hanak (Bronze), Mickey Roscoe (PBomber), Darren Strugnell (President) Lee Eastman (Captain), Steve Webb (Gold), Tony Smale (PBomber) and Matt Newman (Silver). Well done all (well nearly all…).

Valero dominates equalité Alicante 2025 sailing championship

The Equalité Alicante 2025 sailing competition showcased exceptional talent and determination among young sailors, with local athlete Alejandro Valero emerging as the undisputed champion in the Optimist class. Held in Alicante, the event featured 95 sailors navigating challenging conditions over three days from October 21 to October 23, 2023.

Valero, representing RCR Alicante, led the competition from start to finish, displaying remarkable skill and tactical prowess. He finished 11 points ahead of second-placed Izan Rogel from RCN Torrevieja, solidifying his reputation as a rising star in the sailing community. On the final day of racing, Valero delivered two first-place finishes and one second-place result, demonstrating consistency and a competitive edge that set him apart. Despite Rogel’s strong challenge in the early stages of the event, he was unable to maintain Valero’s pace and concluded the competition with a scorecard of 7-34.

Begoña Pérez-Manglano, sailing for CN Jávea, secured third place overall and was the top female competitor, a testament to her steady performance throughout the event. Iván González of RCN Torrevieja finished in fourth place. The winners in various categories included Alejandro Valero and Begoña Pérez-Manglano in the Under-16 division, Izan Rogel and Alexandra Youji Wang in the Under-13 division, and Arturo Chumilla and Maite Isabel Arnasiute in the Under-11 division.

The Regatta Committee, led by Tete Sabaté, executed the event with remarkable efficiency, completing all nine scheduled races despite variable wind conditions. Their dedication ensured a memorable experience for all participants. As the sailing community looks ahead to future competitions, the success of Equalité Alicante 2025 highlights the depth of talent among young Spanish sailors and their potential on the international stage.
