Education Councillor slated for Orihuela Costa school fiasco

The PSOE and Cambiemos municipal groups in Orihuela have formally requested that the Councillor for Education, Vicente Pina, appear before the City Council to explain what they describe as the “disastrous management” of the opening of School No. 20 on the Coast. This school, which was

presented as a solution to school overcrowding in the area, has ended up being “a clear example of improvisation, disorganisation, and lack of transparency on the part of the local government and the Ministry of Education,” they maintain.

The management of the third school on the coast has sparked outrage among parents, who are also calling for the Councillor to be made accountable. The lack of basic resources such as school transportation, cafeteria services and teaching sta , along with de cient infrastructure, have left families without answers and without an adequate solution. Faced with this situation, both municipal groups have demanded that the councillor come forward and o er a detailed explanation. They have criticised the “attitude of disinterest and lack of involvement shown by the councillor and the government team, despite the chaos and indignation of the families,” emphasising that during the rst days of opening neither the mayor nor the councillor of Education have met with the a ected families, showing “a clear contempt for the concerns and needs of the

educational community,” which, according to PSOE and Cambiemos, re ects “a serious lack of empathy and responsibility on the part of political leaders, which has caused growing discontent among citizens.”

In the words of PSOE Councillor María García, “what was supposed to be a solution to educational overcrowding in Orihuela Costa

has become a true nightmare for families,” so the Education Councillor must appear to provide a clear answer about the reasons that led to “this chaotic situation.” In her opinion, “the lack of planning, transparency, and accountability cannot go unpunished.”

Leticia Pertegal, spokesperson for Cambiemos, said that Pina’s attitude was “completely unacceptable” because instead of assuming responsibility, he simply passed on information from the regional government without o ering solutions or addressing the demands of parents. “Educational management cannot continue to be treated with indi erence,” she added.

Green Certificate not recognised by the EU’s Entry Exit System

The British Embassy in Spain is urging all British nationals resident in Spain to get a Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE) as soon as possible, following new information from the Spanish Government that the old recidencia Green Certificate will not be recognised by the EU’s Entry Exit System.

The EU have yet to announce a date for when the Entry Exit System (EES) will come into force, though it is believed to be later this year. Under this new border system, all non-EU short stay travellers will need to register their name, passport details, biometric data (fingerprints and captured facial images) upon entering Spain or any other EU country. These details will be held on file for three years, meaning Britons making repeat visits to Spain within a three-year period will not have to go through the same registration process each time or have their passport stamped once EES is fully implemented.

To be exempt from registering with the EES, British residents living in the EU will need

to show a valid uniform-format biometric card. For British residents in Spain, only a TIE will be accepted by Spanish and EU authorities. The Green Certificate will not be recognised because it does not meet the requirements that will feature in Annex 22 of the Schengen Borders Code.

As a result, Green Certificate holders attempting to enter Spain or any other country in the Schengen zone will not be able to use their Green Certificate as valid proof of residency and may be wrongly accused of overstaying in the EU. This could lead to them being denied entry and returned to the UK. There will be an appeals process although it may require the Green Certificate holder to return to the UK until it is resolved.

The British Embassy and Spanish Government is therefore urging those remaining Green Certificate holders to get a TIE as soon as possible.

His Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain, Sir Alex Ellis said: “We want British residents in Spain to be able to travel smoothly

into this country. That’s why it’s really important that anyone with a Green Certificate gets a TIE. It can take a few months, so start the process now to ensure smooth travel once the EES comes into force later this year.”

The process for securing a TIE appointment is run by the Spanish Government and appointments are readily available in key areas to facilitate uptake. More information on how to apply, including links to Spanish Government websites where the applications are made, can be found on the ‘Living in Spain’ guide on gov. uk.

Heavy rains bring more floods and evacuations

Unrelenting rains in southern Spain have triggered flash floods and evacuation orders in the Andalusian provinces of Málaga and Córdoba, where 19 waterways are at red level for risk of flooding. One body has been found and at least three more people are reported missing.

The risk posed by the rising waters has also led authorities to close off roads, cancel classes and suspend railroad service on three lines.

In the nearby region of Murcia, in southeastern Spain, several passengers were injured after a bus overturned on the A-7 highway, while nine people were trapped inside two cars in Águilas, a popular coastal destination.

Parts of Spain have been experiencing persistently rainy weather since early March. There were isolated episodes of flooding earlier this month in the Valencia region, where residents are still recovering from

the historic flash floods of late October, which also affected parts of Andalusia.

In Málaga, the Andalusian regional government ordered the evacuation of close to 400 homes in Campanillas, east of the regional capital, due to forecasts that heavy rains could cause the river to burst its banks. Various parts of the province registered rainfall of 50 mm to 70 mm in 12 hours.

In Córdoba, local authorities have

evacuated residents from five plots of land near the Guadalquivir River, which is at the red level, and declared a Level 1 emergency in the city’s flood-prone areas. In the province of Granada, the coast experienced a night of heavy rain, which continued until after sunrise. Reservoirs filled to capacity have been opened up to let out the excess water in places like Casasola. And Guadalhorce River reached its highest average level since recordkeeping began.

Woman jailed for killing one twin and abusing another

The Jury Court of the Seventh Section of the Provincial Court of Alicante, based in Elche, has sentenced a woman to 19 years and seven and a half months in prison for murdering her two-yearold son by suffocating him. It was also disclosed that the woman had routinely abused the child, along with his twin brother.

The Court, which enforced the verdict

issued by a jury, found her guilty of one count of murder, another count of habitual abuse, and six counts of bodily harm, for which it considered the aggravating circumstance of kinship and the mitigating circumstances of confession, undue delay, and acting under the influence of drugs.

The convicted woman must pay €100,000 in compensation to each of the deceased’s two

siblings, and another €10,000 to one of them, the deceased’s twin, for the injuries he suffered and the after-effects he suffered as a result of the incident.

According to the account of proven facts included in the sentence, the woman lived with her children - a nine-year-old girl at the time and twoyear-old twins - in a house in the town of Bigastro.

Rail strikes called off at last minute

A planned seven-day rail strike in Spain has been called o at the last moment after unions representing workers from Renfe and Adif reached an agreement with the country’s Transport Ministry.

The industrial action had been scheduled to take place until 3rd April, with a mix of 24-hour and partial strikes. It was expected to impact rail services nationwide, including Cercanías commuter trains (known as Rodalíes in Catalonia), as well as medium- and long-distance routes.

The strike had initially been called due to what unions viewed as violations of agreements signed in 2023. These agreements had been reached to prevent a previous strike related to the transfer of the Catalan commuter rail service, Rodalíes, to the control of the Catalan government, as well as concerns over the potential ‘privatisation’ of freight transport.

Under the original agreement, Renfe and Adif were expected to continue operating Rodalíes, but unions remained sceptical, leading them to call for industrial action. However,

the involved parties have now reached a new deal, which establishes that Renfe Viajeros will maintain a majority stake in the capital of the new company overseeing Rodalíes, while the Catalan government will have control over the board of directors.

Just four hours before the rst stoppage was set to begin, Spain’s trade unions Semaf, CCOO, UGT, and SCF announced the strike’s cancellation after reaching an agreement with the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.

‘We have reached an agreement, which means the strike is called o and therefore the service is

back to normal,’ stated Spain’s Secretary of State for Transport, José Antonio Santano.

The agreement and new structure, Santano explained, will ‘guarantee the rights of Renfe and Adif workers’ once the new company is formed ‘later this year’, while ensuring that the Catalan commuter rail scervice is managed ‘locally’.

‘The deal strikes an important balance because it seeks to fully guarantee the social and labour rights of Renfe and Adif workers while also considering rail services and Spain’s citizens,’ he added.

EU holds off on tit-for-tat tariffs

The EU executive is postponing until mid-April a set of retaliatory tari s on US products including iconic Bourbon whiskeys.

Announcing the move recently, the Commission said it wanted more time to consult governments and to allow all countermeasures – the rst set which was due to come into force on 1st April and a second scheduled for mid-April – to be assessed together.

President Trump threatened the European wine and spirits sector with a whopping 200% import tari immediately after the EU unveiled its lists on 12th March in retaliation to a 25% levy on imports of steel and aluminium to the US.

Trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič sought to reassure MEPs as they warned of potential harm to European drinks producers. “We of course clearly understand this concern, we are in touch

and have spoken to the spirit industry,” the Slovakian commissioner said. “Therefore, we merged the two lists, so we can have more consultations on this regard.”

The European countermeasures include a list of US products that was drawn up during an earlier trade dispute during Trump’s rst term, which has already been approved by EU governments. A second list of products is set to enter into force midApril after adoption by member states.

In response to pleas from a ected industries, the whole package will now be treated as one, allowing for a potential rethink of the earlier list, with a view to enter into force in midApril. Italy, France and Spain are among the top ve exporters of wine to the US, and the new approach could work in their favour.

Washington is expected to unveil further US tari s in a fortnight, with the

Trump administration signalling they will be a “reciprocal” response to what it regards as EU trade barriers. Šefčovič said he wants to see the next move from the US before Brussels can calibrate its response accordingly.

In the meantime, he hoped the US government was open to negotiation.

“The US plans to impose reciprocal tari s on 2 April,” Sefcovic said. “For them, this should serve as a baseline for rede ning and rebuilding US trading relations with the rest of the world. Only then may partners be able to engage on possible negotiations.”

Sefcovic travelled to Washington in February to meet US Commerce secretary Howard Lutnic. The commissioner recently told MEPs that ongoing discussions cover ve areas: cars, chips, timber, steel and aluminium, and pharmaceuticals.

Earthquake drill in Torrevieja

An earthquake drill took place in Torrevieja on Friday (21st March). This was speci cally planned to coincide with the tragedy that occurred in 1829 when an earthquake a ected the entire Vega Baja region. Therefore, the city is preparing this drill to “be prepared in case something similar happens again, God forbid,” said Federico Alarcón, Councillor for Security and Emergencies. Furthermore, the councillor emphasised the importance of “mutual understanding” and cooperation among all the agencies involved in an emergency such as an earthquake. The way those who must respond to a catastrophe is essential for e cient mitigation. In fact, this drill involved the re ghters, SAMU (National Emergency Management Service), Red Cross, Civil Guard, Civil Protection, and Local Police, among others.

According to Tomás Jesús Gallardo, head of the Torrevieja Main Fire Station, the earthquake drill was

carried out in three phases. The rst “phase 0” was a seismic alert during which a Municipal Operational Coordination Centre (CECOPAL) was established to decide whether to evacuate the municipality’s schools in the event of “the imminent occurrence of the hypothetical earthquake.”

In the second phase, the intervening bodies focussed on resolving the situation, primarily at the Sports Palace and the Las Lagunas Secondary School. Finally, the “normalisation phase” was put into action, this consisted of a press conference to report on the

seismic event, the response, and its consequences.

The Councillor for Security and Emergencies reminded everyone that this is only a drill, as many residents call emergency services during these drills “thinking they are real emergencies.” In fact, during the drill, which began at 9:30am the weekly Friday market was underway for Torrevieja. Federico Alarcón assured that the market was not a problem for the drill and that, in fact said that “it was a good thing it is, as a potential earthquake won’t happen when it suits everyone.”

Oldest known human face in western Europe found in Spain

Researchers have discovered fossilized bone fragments in a Spanish cave that belong to the oldest known human face in Western Europe, dating back between 1.1 million and 1.4 million years. The remains, consisting of a left cheek and upper jaw, belong to an extinct human species that once inhabited the Iberian Peninsula.

The groundbreaking nd, made at the Sima del Elefante (Pit of the Elephant) cave near Atapuerca, sheds new light on early human evolution in Europe. According to the research team, the discovery suggests that at least two distinct species of early humans occupied the region during the early Pleistocene period, when the cave was surrounded by humid woodlands teeming with wildlife and intersected by rivers and streams.

“This paper introduces a new actor in the story of human evolution in Europe,” said Dr. Rosa Huguet of the University of Rovira i Virgili in southern Catalonia, who was part of the team that uncovered the fossils.

Early humans are known to have reached Eurasia from Africa at least 1.8 million years ago, as evidenced by ve skulls discovered in Dmanisi, Georgia. These skulls have been attributed to Homo erectus, the rst human species to migrate out of Africa. Until now, the earliest human remains in Western Europe dated between 1.1 million and 1.2 million years old—jawbone and teeth fragments also found at Sima del Elefante. Younger remains, dating to around 800,000 years ago, were previously discovered at the nearby Gran Dolina (Giant Sinkhole) cave and were classi ed as Homo

antecessor, or “pioneer man,” due to their distinct features.

Writing in the journal Nature, the Spanish research team describes the newly discovered fossils as more primitive than Homo antecessor but bearing similarities to Homo erectus. Due to the uncertainties surrounding the fossil’s exact classi cation, the researchers have designated the species Homo a nis erectus, re ecting its close evolutionary relationship with its African ancestor. This discovery provides new insights into the complex history of early human migration and evolution in Europe, suggesting that di erent hominin species may have coexisted on the continent for extended periods.

Criminal gang behind pharmacy and bank burglaries dismantled in Alicante, Murcia, and Valencia

A criminal group specializing in burglaries of pharmacies, banks, and businesses across the provinces of Alicante, Murcia, and Valencia has been dismantled. The operation, carried out by o cers from the National Police and the Civil Guard, resulted in the arrest of six people and the seizure of vehicles, cash, and tools used in the robberies.

The investigation began in August 2024 after an increase in pharmacy robberies was detected, particularly in the areas of El Campello, Playa de San Juan, and Marina Alta. The criminals acted quickly and precisely: they forced open doors, ripped open cash registers or safes, and ed in high-end vehicles with altered license plates.

After months of investigation and thanks

to coordination between the National Police and the Civil Guard, seven house searches were conducted in Orihuela, Torrevieja, Benidorm, Villajoyosa, and Denia, leading to the arrest of six members of the organization.

During the searches, o cers seized €7,000 in cash, a blank- ring pistol, clothing used in the robberies, bolt cutters and lock-picking tools, GPS tracking beacons and walkie-talkies, an

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to visit China and Vietnam in April to strengthen trade ties

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will travel to China in April to meet with President Xi Jinping, according to Bloomberg News. As part of his trip to Asia, Sánchez will also visit Vietnam, aiming to open new market opportunities. This will be his third visit to China in just over two years, following his March 2023 trip marking 50 years of diplomatic relations and another visit last September.

Sánchez remains committed to strengthening the commercial ties he developed during his last visit. During that meeting, Xi Jinping extended a formal invitation to King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia to visit China in 2025, marking the 20th anniversary of the strategic partnership signed between the two nations in 2005. Several trade and cooperation agreements were reached during those discussions.

According to government sources cited by Servimedia, Sánchez’s visit will focus on boosting trade relations and investment between Spain and these Asian markets. His trip follows a bilateral meeting on November 19 with Vietnam’s Prime Minister, Phạm Minh Chinh, during the G-20 summit, where Spain participated as a guest country. At that time, Sánchez emphasized the mutual desire to strengthen political, trade, and investment relations.

Sánchez highlighted Vietnam’s growing appeal for foreign investment and stated that “thanks to the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, Spanish companies, leaders in sectors such as infrastructure and renewable energies, will be able to develop great business opportunities in Vietnam.”

Trade Tensions with the United States Sánchez’s visit to China comes at a challenging time for global trade, particularly due to the ongoing tari war initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump. More recently, in his speech at the Davos Forum, Sánchez rea rmed Spain’s commitment to “more trade” and highlighted opportunities in China, India, Latin America, and Africa.

Meanwhile, the European Commission announced on March 20 that it will delay the activation of retaliatory measures against the U.S. until mid-April. These measures are in response to the 25% tari s imposed by Washington on European steel and aluminum imports since March 12. Initially, the EU had planned to introduce a rst package of countermeasures by April 1.

Mercadona’s ‘Tienda 8’ revolution

Pay attention next time you go shopping—you may have already noticed a major change at your local supermarket. A new model installed in most of Mercadona’s supermarkets is drawing significant attention. The Valencian chain introduced its ‘new efficient store model,’ known as ‘Tienda 8’, in 2016, and it has since been expanding across Spain. By 2024, this concept has been implemented in 1,614 stores.

The goal of ‘Tienda 8’ is to integrate cutting-edge technology to improve both customer experience and store operations. This includes modernized

services, advanced tools for employees, and optimized store management, enhancing collaboration between workers.

“By the end of 2024, around 85% of Mercadona stores in Spain operated under this new format. In Portugal, all new stores follow this model, reinforcing the company’s commitment to technology and sustainability,” Mercadona stated.

The company has big expansion plans in Portugal, aiming to solidify its presence in the food distribution sector through modernized stores and sustained growth.

Record Profits and Job Creation Mercadona achieved record profits last year, reaching nearly €1.4 billion, a 37% increase compared to the previous year. The company’s market share in Spain grew by 0.7%, reaching 28.2% of the total market.

Additionally, by 2024, Mercadona had created 6,000 new jobs, bringing its workforce to 110,000 employees. Workers earn an average salary of €2,100 and have been with the company for an average of four years.

The GBP has demonstrated robust performance in early 2025 but has recently stabilised against other major currencies. The pound seemed relatively una ected by last week’s GDP growth data, which came in below expectation, revealing the UK economy contracted unexpectedly in January. Estimates report the economy shrunk by 0.1%, 0.2% below the 0.1% growth forecast by markets.

Sterling is being impacted by US dollar weakness, with any downward pressure on the pound being outweighed by the broad decline of the dollar.

On Thursday 20 March, the Monetary Policy Committee voted 8-1 to maintain the Bank Rate at 4.5%, in line with market expectations.

MPC members now think they will adopt a gradual and careful approach to further monetary policy adjustments, potentially cutting rates if in ationary pressures ease and economic conditions warrant it. The MPC highlighted increased global trade policy uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and nancial market volatility as factors that could signi cantly impact the UK economy.

Also on Thursday, we saw the release of the UK’s latest employment data, which showed no change from January, coming in at 4.4% and wage growth came in as expected, dropping slightly to 5.8% from last month’s reading of 6%. Overall, the stable employment rate and moderating wage growth hint at a more balanced outlook for GDP in the future.

EUR The euro has gained ground recently, contrary to many traders’ forecasts for this year. President Trump’s trade tari policy has been exerting

downward pressure on the euro since the US election in November. However, anticipated substantial defence spending has aided the euro in recovering its lost value.

On Tuesday 18 March, Germany’s parliament recently voted in favour of a signi cant increase in defence spending, marking a historic shift in the country’s scal policy. The Bundestag approved amendments to the constitution, allowing for new borrowing estimated to exceed €1 trillion. This includes a €500 billion special fund for infrastructure projects and exemptions for defence spending above 1% of GDP from strict debt rules

This decision is expected to have several impacts, including the economic growth in Germany due to increased spending on defence and infrastructure could stimulate economic growth in Germany. Secondly, the euro could be a ected by the increased borrowing and spending. And nally, the boost in defence spending aims to enhance Germany’s military capabilities and support European security.

Additionally on Tuesday, the ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany came in, showing strong growth in expectations again in the March 2025 survey, reaching 51.6 points. This puts it 25.6 points above the previous month’s reading. The last time the indicator increased this substantially was in January 2023.

THY WILL BE DONE

I often read on forums that a Will can be organised directly through a notary effectively cutting out the “middle man’’ saving 40€ or so on average against our own fees and this is 100% true as if you are simply looking to save money upfront, going directly to a notary will always be cheaper than using ourselves to produce your legal documents and then paying a notary for their services afterwards. However, let’s take a minute to remember WHY we are organising a Will for your Spanish estate in the first place – it is to guarantee that your wishes are

Clients of Thy Will Be Done are ASSURED of the following:

1. Their beneficiaries will not need to travel to Spain to arrange an NIE number – our UK office can easily organise this directly with them and the Spanish Consulate;

2. Their beneficiaries will not have to seek out an English-speaking Abogado (solicitor) in Spain and pay for that Abogado to have Power of Attorney to act for them – if we are nominated as executors within a Spanish Will, we will immediately liaise directly with the UK beneficiaries in English and the Spanish authorities in Spanish;

3. Their beneficiaries will not have to pay an unknown amount for Spanish probate to be conducted as our probate fees are guaranteed in advance at just 1.75% + iva of the estate value as standard or even lower at only 1.16% + iva if

the client has Priority Client Cover in place (just 4.99€ per month with no minimum contract);

SMART FUNERAL PLANNING: Regulated Vs Unregulated

Expats across Spain are considering a pre-paid Funeral Plan, and many are wondering how they can choose a reliable funeral plan provider.

While it’s not mandatory to buy a plan from a UK regulated provider, here are some important points to consider.

Since July 2022, any funeral plan provider which offers a plan with a UK funeral option, is legally required to be regulated in the UK, whether they operate in the UK, Spain, or

even Australia and regardless of where the funeral eventually takes place. For the customers of regulated plan providers, this means extra protection.

Extra Protection - NO Extra Cost

With a funeral plan from a UK regulated provider, not only do plan holders benefit from having a funeral plan which covers them in Spain and the UK, they also receive financial protection from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

You may have heard of the FSCS, it’s the same scheme that safeguards all UK bank ac-

KEEP YOUR MONEY IN A SAFE PLACE: With FSCS protection, in the unlikely event of a provider’s failure, you are guaranteed to receive either an equivalent funeral plan ornancial compensation at the market value at that time.

counts for up to £85,000. With FSCS protection, in the unlikely event of a regulated funeral plan provider’s failure, plan holders are guaranteed to receive either an equivalent funeral plan or financial compensation at the market value at the time. The FSCS ensures that firms handle consumers’ money responsibly to deliver funeral services promised.

Trust Funds Are Not All the Same A trust fund on its own does NOT guarantee financial protection. Many providers, both regulated and unregulated, use trusts to hold funds invested by plan holders to eventually pay for funeral services.

Thankfully, UK regulated funeral plan providers MUST have their trust funds based in the UK and must hold at least 100% of the amount it would cost to deliver the funeral when it’s needed.

On the other hand, unregulated funeral plan providers may not have a trust fund at

all, or they could have trust funds that are left exposed to abuse and financial mismanagement. For example, they may not hold enough money for the funerals in the future, and some unregulated providers have their trust funds established offshore in locations like Gibraltar.

You get assurance from a UK regulated provider that they are under strict financial control rules and critically for plan holders, under the protection of the FSCS.

Bigger For A Reason

In Spain, anyone can set themselves up and sell funeral plans. Recently, we’ve seen where that can lead. When it comes to choosing a funeral plan, look for a provider you can rely on to be operating not just next year, but for the next 20 years. Ask them how long they have been helping families and how

their money is managed. Ideally, you want a provider that has a dedicated team that you can trust will answer the call and be on hand to support your loved ones.

Ask These 3 Critical Questions:

How long they have been providing funeral plans?

Where is the trust fund administered? (some are based offshore)

Are they a regulated funeral plan provider? (look for the FSCS symbol)

The Royal British Legion

The Royal British Legion is committed to helping members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, veterans, and their families. Our support is available every day of the week, both in the UK and here in Spain.

We extend our assistance to serving and ex-serving personnel starting from just one day of service and continue to support them throughout their lives, long after their service has concluded.

Remembrance honors those who serve to protect our democratic freedoms and way of life. We come together across faiths, cultures, and backgrounds to recognise the service and sacri ces made by the Armed Forces community from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

We will remember them.

In Orihuela Costa and District, we have our own RBL Branch, which has consistently raised funds for our veterans and their families, regardless of their service background.

Established in 2008, our Branch has raised over 500,000 euros (yes, that’s more than half a million euros) to support those who are less fortunate. Show me someone who has never needed help throughout their lives, and I will show you someone very fortunate.

You do not have to have served in our armed forces to become a member; everyone is welcome.

If you are a business, restaurant, pub, golf society, or an individual, please consider supporting your local Branch of the RBL.

We hold monthly meetings and also have an active social

dining club.

The next meeting of the RBL Orihuela Costa and District Branch will take place on Friday, April 11, 2025, at 3:45 PM for a 4:00 PM start. The meeting will be held at Gracey’s Restaurant in Los Dolses, near Zenia Boulevard, located on the top oor near Lidl, just 2 minutes from Pet’s World.

Everyone, including nonmembers, is welcome to attend.

For more information, please call: +34 603123670, or email ianconnell52@ gmail.com.

We look forward to giving you a warm veterans welcome!

This Week´s Movie Picks

Saturday 29nd March, ITV2, 7.25 pm

In Philadelphia, Billy Batson is an abandoned child who is proving a nuisance to Child Services and the authorities with his stubborn search for his lost mother. However, in his latest foster home, Billy makes a new friend, Freddy, and nds himself selected by the Wizard Shazam to be his new champion. Now endowed with the ability to instantly become an adult superhero by speaking the wizard’s name, Billy gleefully explores his new powers with Freddy. However, Billy soon learns that he has a deadly enemy, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, who was previously rejected by the wizard and has accepted the power of the Seven Deadly Sins instead. Now pursued by this mad scientist for his own power as well, Billy must face up to the responsibilities of his calling while learning the power of a special magic with his true family that Sivana can never understand.

The Hitman´s Bodyguard

Sunday 30th March, ITV, 11.20 pm

With his reputation in tatters after the painfully unsuccessful delivery of a distinguished Japanese client, the former triple-A protection agent, Michael Bryce, is now reduced to a mere second-class bodyguard for hire, two years after the disgraceful incident. Under those circumstances, Bryce would do anything to prove his worth, and, before long, he accepts an o er from Interpol to escort the international assassin, Darius Kincaid, from Manchester to the Hague. The task seems simple: Bryce needs to transport him from point A to point B; nevertheless, the trip to the Netherlands is long and hazardous, and Kincaid--as the only one with the guts and enough hard evidence to testify against a tyrannical Belarusian dictator--is an obvious target. Undoubtedly, it’s a tough job, as the mismatched duo will have to put aside their grudges, and race against the clock in a non-stop concerto for bullets.

Did you know that fatigue causes up to 30% of road accidents in

Spain?

Fatigue, a hidden danger on the road, is responsible for 20% to 30% of all accidents, according to Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT). It reduces your ability to concentrate, increasing the risk of collisions or veering off the road.

At Generali Expatriates, we want to ensure you stay safe by explaining how fatigue affects

your driving and the factors that contribute to tiredness behind the wheel.

How fatigue affects your driving

Fatigue slows your reactions, impairs vision, and leads to slower, less precise movements, putting you at greater risk. It can also cause headaches and discomfort, making driving more difficult. When you’re tired,

you’re more likely to make risky decisions and misjudge other drivers’ actions.

What increases fatigue?

Lack of rest: Take a break every two hours or 150 kilometres to combat tiredness.

Weather and lighting: Fog, rain, or driving at night or during dawn/ sunset requires more concentration and leads to faster exhaustion.

Traffic and road conditions:

Heavy traffic, poor roads, or mechanical issues in your car increase stress and fatigue.

High stress levels: Rushing or stressful driving situations lead to poor judgment and greater fatigue.

Fatigue is just one risk you face on the road. Having the right car insurance can provide peace of mind, knowing that you’re

covered in case of an accident

At Generali Expatriates, we offer car insurance solutions tailored to your lifestyle. And now, take advantage of our cashback offer! We are offering a 10% cashback on your premium every time you take out a new car or home insurance policy with us—valid until May 26, 2025!

Stay safe and protected with Generali Expatriates.

Advertorial

Recent reports suggest that Iberian Funeral Plans may have ceased trading, leaving customers uncertain about the security of their prepaid funeral plans. If you have been affected, we sincerely sympathise and want to help. Information about how to get hold of us can be found at the end of this article. While we are still gathering information, this situation highlights the risks of purchasing plans from unregulated providers.

Regulated Funeral Plans Offer Protection

If you have purchased a plan from a regulated provider, there is no cause for concern. In Spain, Portugal and Cyprus there are only two funeral plan providers currently operating that are regulated:

• Avalon Funeral Plans

• Golden Leaves

These companies are fully authorised and

regulated in the UK, ensuring that your investment is protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). This is the same scheme that safeguards all UK bank accounts for up to £85,000. With FSCS protection, in the unlikely event of a provider’s failure, you are guaranteed to receive either an equivalent funeral plan or financial compensation at the current market value.

An unregulated funeral plan does NOT have this protection.

What Can You Do If You Have an Iberian Plan or Another Unregulated Plan?

If you hold a funeral plan with Iberian Funeral Plans or any other unregulated provider, we strongly recommend acting quickly to secure your arrangem ents.

To support those affected,

we have established a financial assistance initiative. If you need guidance on your next steps, we encourage you to reach out:

Call us on 966 799 070 Visit us at: avalonfuneralplans. com

We understand the importance of ensuring your final wishes are carried out with dignity and peace of mind. Don’t leave your plans to chance—contact us today to explore your options and secure a regulated, protected funeral plan.

“What are the outputs from a Fibre Optic router”?

A fibre optic router typically has two main outputs:

1. Ethernet Ports: These are used to connect wired devices like computers, gaming consoles, and smart TVs directly to the router for a stable and fast internet connection.

2. Wi-Fi Signal: This output provides wireless connectivity to devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops, allowing them to connect to the internet without the need for physical cables.

Your tech questions answered by Brian Hoile of the Costa Blanca Technology Help Group, helping over 400 members with their PCs , smartphones and more. Group members can attend meetings in person or online using Zoom or Teams.

These outputs ensure that both wired and wireless devices can access the high-speed internet provided by the fibre optic connection. When referring to Wi-Fi outputs on a fibre optic router, you typically have two frequency bands: What are the 2 WiFi outputs

1. 2.4 GHz Band: This band offers a longer range but usually has slower speeds. It’s great for covering larger areas and penetrating walls, making it ideal for basic internet browsing and connecting devices that don’t require high-speed internet.

2. 5 GHz Band: This band provides faster speeds but has a shorter range. It’s perfect for activities that require high bandwidth, such as streaming high-definition videos or online gaming. Devices need to be closer to the router to benefit from these higher speeds.

By providing both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz outputs, routers can ensure a balanced network that caters to different needs and device capabilities.

To improve your Wi-Fi connection, here are a few tips you can try:

1. Optimal Router Placement: Place your router in a central location in your home, away from walls and obstructions. Higher positions (e.g., on a shelf) can help distribute the signal more effectively.

2. Minimize Interference: Keep your router away from other electronic devices that might cause interference, such as microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors.

3. Use Both Bands: Utilize both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Connect devices that require high-speed internet to the 5 GHz band and use the 2.4 GHz band for devices that need a longer range.

3. Secure Your Network: Use a strong, unique password for your Wi-Fi network to prevent unauthorized access. Enabling WPA3 encryption, if available, can provide better security.

4. Limit Connected Devices: Too many devices connected to your network can slow it down. Disconnect devices that are not in use.

Egg prices soar in Spain

First, it was oil, sugar, coffee, and chocolate.

Now, as Spain’s consumer organization OCU warns, it’s eggs that are seeing steep price hikes. Since April 2024, the cost of category M eggs—the cheapest—has surged by 25.2%, with the most dramatic rise occurring in just the last two weeks.

According to OCU’s monthly price observatory, the cheapest dozen M eggs cost between €2.07 and €2.10 in February. By March 12, the same eggs were selling for €2.60 in most supermarkets, while large eggs reached €2.80.

What’s Driving the Price Surge?

OCU attributes the increase to multiple factors, including:

Avian Flu Crisis in the USA: Outbreaks have led to mass cullings of hens, reducing supply and pushing prices up

globally. Spain’s producers may be exporting more, reducing local availability.

Fear of an Outbreak in Europe: While Spain has no reported poultry cases, neighboring countries have. Increased preventative measures and controls have raised production costs.

Market Reactions & Social

Media Hype: Widespread discussion of price hikes creates consumer panic, potentially influencing further increases.

OCU urges authorities to closely monitor egg prices to prevent speculation and unjustified price rises, ensuring consumers are protected from market instability.

No beach bars in Torrevieja this Easter due to delayed tender

Visitors and residents of Torrevieja will be disappointed to nd that beach bars will not be available this Easter. The much-anticipated seasonal food and beverage services, a staple of the town’s coastal experience, have been delayed due to administrative setbacks in the tendering process. The call for bids was only published earlier this month, with a submission deadline set for March 24—far too late for beach bars to be set up and ready for the busy Easter period.

A Tender for Ten Beach Bars Across Three Beaches

The current tender includes a total of ten beach bars, which will be distributed across three popular beaches:

La Mata Beach: 7 beach bars

Los Locos Beach: 1 beach bar

Los Náufragos Beach: 2 beach bars

Each beach bar must conform to strict size

regulations, with a maximum footprint of 70 square meters. This includes:

A 20m² bar area for food and drink preparation

A 50m² terrace to accommodate seating for customers

A 10m² restroom facility for public use

To maintain the aesthetics and environmental integrity of the beaches, the contract requires that all structures be dismantled at the end of the season, which runs from March 15 to October 31.

Delays Could

Extend for Months

Because the bidding process started late, the selection and awarding of contracts will take several weeks or even months, meaning beach bars may not be operational until well into the tourist season. In addition to the delayed process, last year saw further setbacks due to environmental concerns, as authorities had to ensure that the Kentish Plover—a vulnerable bird species—was not nesting in La Mata before granting installation approvals.

For now, visitors will have to nd alternative refreshment options, as beach bars remain out of reach for the foreseeable future.

Health & Beauty

I am a working Mum with two children, and I don’t think I am alone when I say how hard I, and my husband are finding life right now. Our children’s lives are a constant round of parties requiring gifts to be bought costing no less than 15 euros....their hobbies and after school clubs are crippling us financially. My husband and I used to go out on a date night once a week, but we are either too tired from running the kids around, or not able to afford it. Now three girlfriends are getting married this year and there are hen weekends to negotiate and pay for, as well as the weddings and wedding presents to buy. This, coupled with the extended family all coming over this Summer and wanting to stay with us, is really putting a dent on our income. I took out a credit card to cope with it all, and keep up with everyone and now I have a debt that I never wanted. I just want to cry.... it is all spiralling out of control.

Your longer email tells me that the adults in your family still buy for birthdays and Christmas and you cannot keep up with the demand. My own experience was that our family was so large that we reached a similar situation, and decided to pool present buying, whereby everyone puts in what they can afford and a joint present is bought for that person, even the children. Children’s lives these days are such that there always seems to be party for them to attend. You could suggest to the Mums that everyone puts in a small amount and jointly buy the child a gift. As for expensive Hen parties; if they are away from home and a hotel stay is required, the bill could run into several hundreds for the weekend; it’s not cheap to go away any more. A friend of mine was in a similar situation with someone she was not particularly close to, and chose not to attend. Sacrifices have to made, rather than going into debt.

Hypothyroidism and diet: What to eat and avoid

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormones, a ecting energy, digestion, heart health, and more. While medication is the primary treatment, a well-balanced diet can support thyroid function and help manage symptoms.

Foods to Eat

1. Iodine-Rich Foods

Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, but too much can also be harmful. The recommended daily intake is 150 mcg for adults, 220 mcg for pregnancy, and 290 mcg for lactation. Good sources include:

Iodized salt

Seafood (seaweed, cod, oysters)

Dairy (yogurt, cheese, butter)

Eggs & Beef liver

2. Selenium-Rich Foods

Selenium may help reduce thyroid in ammation. The daily requirement is 55 mcg for adults, 60 mcg for pregnancy, and 70 mcg for lactation. Sources include:

Brazil nuts (caution: high in selenium)

Seafood (tuna, sardines, shrimp)

Meat & poultry (pork, beef, turkey)

Eggs, whole grains, lentils

3. Vitamin B12 & D-Rich Foods

Low levels of these vitamins are

common in hypothyroidism. Good sources include:

Vitamin B12: Liver, seafood, turkey, eggs, dairy

Vitamin D: Cod liver oil, dairy, mushrooms

4. Antioxidant-Rich Foods

These help reduce in ammation, especially in autoimmune thyroid disease. Sources include:

Vitamin A: Liver, sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach

Vitamin C: Citrus fruits, peppers, kiwi, tomatoes

Vitamin E: Nuts, seeds, spinach, broccoli

Zinc: Seafood, beef, turkey, lentils

Foods to Avoid

No single food must be completely avoided, but gluten or lactose intolerance may worsen in ammation in autoimmune-related hypothyroidism. Consult a healthcare provider before making dietary changes.

Cruciferous Vegetables: Safe or Harmful?

Vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and kale contain goitrogens, which were once thought to hinder iodine absorption. However, recent research shows no signi cant e ect on thyroid function, making them safe in normal portions.

Quirónsalud Torrevieja hospital kicks off Its 25th Anniversary with the inauguration of the bell

Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital has o cially launched the commemorative activities for its 25th anniversary with an emotional and meaningful event: the inauguration of the Bell of Dreams, a symbol of hope for oncology patients. This ceremony, held in the hospital’s oncology ward, serves as a prelude to World Cancer Day, observed on 4th February, and was attended by healthcare professionals, representatives of patient associations, and families.

Dr Carlos Yago, Medical Director of Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital, was present at the event and emphasised the importance of these symbolic gestures in “reminding patients that it is possible to overcome the disease. The Bell of Dreams represents the strength, hope and resilience that de ne oncology patients.”

Alongside him, Nuria

Armengol, Director of Nursing, highlighted the fundamental role of the nursing team in providing emotional support throughout the oncology process. Also speaking at the event were Victoria Meneses, President of Afecáncer, and Manoli Flores, President of the Alicante Association for the

Fight Against Cancer, both of whom agreed on the importance of initiatives such as this in raising awareness and providing community support for patients.

Dr Joseba Rebollo, a specialist in Medical Oncology, also underscored the signi cance of this moment, stating, “More and more patients are able

to ring the Bell of Dreams because treatments are becoming increasingly e ective, and science is advancing at a promising pace.” The ceremony concluded with words from Dr Rosa Cañón, Head of Radiation Oncology at Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital, who reminded everyone that “cancer treatment is a collective

e ort involving patients, families, healthcare professionals and society as a whole. Together, we are stronger in the ght against this disease.”

The most emotional moment of the day was the rst ringing of the bell, led by Esther, a six-year-old girl who has overcome cancer. Her gesture lled everyone with hope and emotion, symbolising victory over the disease and sending a powerful message of strength to those still undergoing treatment.

The event was attended by members of both patient associations, professionals from the hospital’s oncology platform, and representatives of the medical teams. It marked the beginning of a year full of commemorative activities to celebrate 25 years of commitment to health and life at Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital.

CV-95 Road widening investment slashed

The investment for the CV95 road widening project, which connects Orihuela and Torrevieja and intersects with the N-332, has been drastically reduced in the Valencian Government’s 2025 budget. Despite being a historic and much-demanded project by various sectors, including the Popular Party, businesses, and local civic groups, the budget allocation for the project has been cut from €19.5 million in 2024 to only €300,000 in 2025. The draft budget presented last Thursday revealed this sharp reduction, leaving many disappointed.

in his first budget for the “CV95 Projects: Road Widening and Improvement of Road Safety,” a major priority. In 2023, the previous government allocated €30 million for the project, but now, two years later, only €300,000 is included.

The Ministry of Environment, Infrastructure, and Territory insists that the project will still proceed, explaining that an alternative funding model, called the “availability payment model,” is being explored. This model does not require a specific budget

allocation at this early stage. Additionally, the budget allocation for the TorreviejaHospital section of the CV-95 has been slashed from €5.06 million in 2024 to just €165,000.

The Generalitat is also working on a feasibility study for public-private partnerships, collaborating with local governments and business groups to determine the best approach for meeting regional needs. They have also criticized the previous government for making promises that never materialized.

Carlos Mazón, the current president of the Valencian Government, previously criticized the failure to widen this road during his tenure as president of the Alicante Provincial Council. Business organizations like the Orihuela Chamber of Commerce and municipal governments of the People’s Party in Torrevieja and Orihuela have long advocated for this development. Mazón promised substantial investment when he took office, allocating €19.5 million

Tra c safety campaign boosts inspections, issues 6,409 tickets

During the seven-day campaign from March 10 to 16, 448,494 vehicles were inspected—a 7.6% increase over last year’s gures. O cers from the Civil Guard’s Tra c Group, supported by local and regional police, conducted special surveillance on both urban and interurban roads, focusing on enforcing the use of seat belts and child restraint systems (CRS).

A total of 6,409 tickets were issued for non-compliance. Among those observed, 6,019 drivers and passengers were not wearing seat belts, while 385 minors under 135 cm were either without proper CRS or using them incorrectly. Notably, 77% of the noncompliance incidents occurred on conventional roads, which are among the most dangerous due to the high frequency of road departures and accidents.

Campaign data further reveal that 6,024 adults were reported for not

wearing seat belts: 3,088 drivers, 1,291 front-seat passengers, and 1,645 rear-seat passengers. These safety devices are critical; studies show that seat belts reduce the risk of death by 50% and lower the chance of serious injury in urban areas by ve times. For children, proper use of CRS can prevent up to 90% of serious or fatal injuries and reduce overall injury severity by as much as 75%.

The Tra c and Road Safety Act has reinforced these measures by increasing the penalty, deducting four points for failure to use seat belts or CRS. This campaign highlights the ongoing e orts to enhance road safety and protect all vehicle occupants.

San Miguel Golf Society at La Serena Golf

It is with a very heavy heart that I start this week’s report. We have lost a long standing and very popular member of our Society – last week I mentioned that Norman McBride (19352025) was unwell and within a couple of days, he very sadly passed away. The Society send our heartfelt condolences to his children, Alison, Stephen and David and his friends and extended family. Norman was predeceased by his loving wife, Maura. The funeral service will be held on Friday, 28th March at 11:00am at POMPAS FÚNEBRES

SAMPER, Calvo Sotelo, 10, Pilar de la Horadada 03190. Thereafter they are meeting at Paddy’s Point.

We have not been at La Serena since early October, so it was nice for the 47 golfers to be back here. La Serena is well known for the many water

hazards on numerous holes, which a lot of us fell foul and very wet to with numerous golf balls being lost (I’m keeping quiet on my loss…). The weather held with lots of sun and a chilly breeze at times.

The course was in relatively good condition, with lots of apparent repairing of the fairways, which is bedding in well. Greens appeared to be fast initially, but putts slowed down rapidly. Odd, bearing in mind how much rain we have had lately.

The results came in as follows:

Gold: Steve Webb (42 points) a stunning score and best of the day

Silver: Paul Guest (41 points)

Bronze: Ivan Hanak (40 points)

Nearest the Pins from Dave Rowe, Paul Lambert, Dave Rowe (not a typo, he got two)

and Issy Wiggins Turner, all winning a sleeve of SMGS golf balls. Two Twos this week from Dave Rowe and Drew Niblock (a nice little earner of €45 each). We have renamed the Abacus as the “McBride Bottle” and this was received gracefully by Kevin Whiting. The football card was Derby with Mick Kilcullen taking the pot for that. Finally, we held a raffle in aid of Prostate Cancer UK raising €510 with Pat Dooley being the lucky winner of a 2-night trip to Majorca with Green Fees (donated by Golf Hot Spots).

Next week we are back at Vistabella for our Eclectic.

Winners pictured (L to R) Pat Dooley (Charity Raffle), Steve Webb (Gold), Tony Smale (PBomber, as usual!), Lee Eastman (Captain) Paul Guest (Silver) and Ivan Hanak (Bronze).

Sheerin’s Golf Society “St Patrick’s Shield” at Alicante

This was our tenth year of the St Patricks Shield and we thank “Sir” Ronnie King for continuing his sponsorship on behalf of the Irish. The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups with one overall winner. As usual everything was ready and waiting for us at Alicante Golf but after the torrential rain from the last two weeks, which only stopped twelve hours before we played, the course was in a very bad state, as expected, there were man-made lakes on some of the fairways and all the bunkers were washed out, buggy’s only allowed on the pathways and many areas very slippy under foot, as found out by a few players, the weather was back where it should be, warm and sunny with 22 degrees but it was just a pleasure to get out and play golf.

Winner of the “St Patrick’s Shield” came from group A on count back with Peter Kelly and was “Ding Dong” Ian Bell with 37 points, runner up was Peter Kelly with 37 points and third place went to Ray Hamilton with 33 points. Group B winner was Keith

James with 36 points, runner up was “Flying Scotsman” Andy Ramage with 34 points and third place was John Clark with 33 points. Nearest the pin’s winners were group A hole 6 Ray Hamilton, hole 11 “Watch This Drive” Andy Godfrey, hole 11 George O’Sullivan, group B hole 4 “Tom Tom” Brian Court, hole 8 John Clark and hole 18 Bill Howie, best front 9 on count back eventually went to Ray Hamilton with 20 points and best back 9 went to “The Mighty Quinn” Kevin Quinn with 17 points, the 2’s pot was won by “Slippy” Kenny Dow on hole 6 winning €15.

The football card was won by “Watch My Drive” Andy Godfrey with Ipswich winning €40 and raising €40 for our chosen charities for 2025.

Thank you to Kellie, Katie and sta at Sheerin’s for the excellent food and hospitality.

Picture shows “Sir” Ronnie King presenting the shield to Ian Bell.
