Torrevieja Court investigates controversial carnival costumes

The investigation into a controversial children’s carnival parade in Torrevieja, Spain, is set to be reopened

after concerns were raised about underage girls wearing lingerie-style costumes, including stockings and

heels.

Initially, a complaint filed by the Christian Lawyers group regarding the 10th February parade was dismissed. However, following the circulation of viral videos depicting the participation of minors in provocative attire, a Torrevieja court has decided to revisit the case.

The judge overseeing the matter determined that there may be grounds to suspect the commission of crimes, despite initial findings suggesting otherwise. Notably, the judge emphasised that no child was coerced into participating in the event.

Responding to the court’s decision, the Christian Lawyers group filed an appeal, leading to the overturning of the previous ruling. Consequently, two individuals implicated in the incident will provide statements on 28th May, alongside two complainants and a witness.

Comparsa Osadia, the

troupe at the centre of the controversy, took part in the carnival parade and received a fourth prize of €650 in the best costume category for adult troupes. Both adult and child members of Osadia were observed wearing stockings, garter belts, high heels, and other lingerie items.

The circulation of a video on social media, accompanied by critical commentary regarding the perceived sexualization of children, sparked widespread debate

and condemnation. Polonia Castellanos, president of the Christian Lawyers group, welcomed the court’s decision, emphasising the importance of safeguarding children’s innocence and preventing their hyper-sexualization.

Meanwhile, Torrevieja Mayor Eduardo Dolon asserted the City Council’s stance against intervening in the vetting process for carnival troupes, citing concerns about censorship and historical parallels to the Spanish Inquisition.

In response to the controversy, the Torrevieja Carnival Association reiterated its support for all participating troupes, affirming its commitment to defending freedom of expression.

Holiday trends show staycations and self bookings

The average Spanish resident will spend between €500 and €1,500 on their holidays this year, with three in 10 set to increase their budget from last year and 16% reducing it.

A survey targeting customers aged between 18 and 65, found that a total of 55% expect to spend the same on their 2024 getaways as they did in 2023, that nearly four in 10 plan to take two trips this year, and three in 10 intend to take three or more trips.

Two-thirds will take their holidays in summer, which continues to be the most popular season for national or international travel. The emphasis is more on national travel, since staycations in Spain are the highest on holidaymakers’ wish lists for 2024, even if just for short breaks.

Another 44% intends to travel to another European country, speci cally on the Mediterranean, whilst 20% are looking to go long-haul and visit somewhere on another continent.

When it comes to destination

decisions, over three-quarters say price is the deciding factor, with four in 10 in uenced by discounts or special o ers, and just over a third having a set budget and intending to stick to it.

Flexibility of travel dates for package deals, and the option to cancel with a refund, are crucial to a third of holidaymakers when deciding on their destination, and comfort, convenience, and overall safety of the region or country they want to go to are essential to another 32%, with a quarter saying the optional or included excursions, activities and experiences on o er will make their decision for them.

High-street travel agencies continue to be major players when booking a holiday, although far less so than 20 years ago; only 15% tend to use them for organising their breaks.

Another 69% arranges their own travel, using booking websites, review pages, and travel blogs o ering information.

Wanted Brit arrested in Benidorm

After a four-year manhunt, the Policia Nacional in Benidorm has nally apprehended Paul Brown, a 50-yearold fugitive from Manchester wanted for drug tra cking. Brown was seized by o cers while checking into a hotel, putting an end to a lengthy search for justice.

Brown stands accused of involvement in the supply of Class A and B drugs, marking the culmination of an

investigation that began in 2020. At that time, authorities launched an appeal to locate him following the dismantling of an encrypted communications network known as Encrochat. The network’s data revealed Brown’s alleged participation in what has been described as a “largescale drugs conspiracy.”

In 2022, a European Arrest Warrant was issued for Brown, prompting a joint e ort between the Policia Nacional,

Greater Manchester Police (GMP), and the UK National Crime Agency to track him down. This collaborative investigation ultimately led to his arrest in Benidorm.

Following his apprehension, Brown has been transferred to the custody of the National Court in Madrid to facilitate his extradition process.

Detective Inspector Rick Castley from GMP’s Serious Organised Crime

Group expressed gratitude for the support received from both domestic and international law enforcement agencies.

“Brown stands accused of a signi cant drugs conspiracy, and our determination to locate him has not faltered over the years,” stated Castley. “I would like to thank our colleagues at the National Crime Agency and Spanish law enforcement for supporting us in

farm, in the middle of nature and o ering you the opportunity to get to know the countryside in more depth. It is a type of farming in which animals come rst and you will have the opportunity to taste the food grown there.

On the occasion of International Museum Day, children’s workshops will be held on 18th May in Plaza del Carmen and Plaza de la Condesa Via Manuel, in the morning from 11:30am to 2pm.

In addition, tourist routes will be o ered that include a visit to the Cathedral, Santo Domingo and the Civil War Refuge, giving participants a complete vision of the historical wealth of Orihuela.

For more information, visit www.orihuelaturistica.es or WhatsApp 673 836 385.

our relentless pursuit to nd him.”

Despite Brown’s evasion of authorities for four years, Castley emphasized that he had not been forgotten. The arrest underscores the persistent e orts of law enforcement agencies to bring individuals involved in criminal enterprises to justice, regardless of geographical boundaries or the passage of time.

Orihuela awards contract to restore Segura River ecosystem

The Orihuela City Council has awarded the UTE CPSPYG ECOSISTEMAS ORIHUELA through an open procedure the drafting of the project “Restoration of river ecosystems and strategies for mitigating the risk of ooding in Orihuela (REFLUYE MI RÍO)” for an amount of 184,911, 44 euros with VAT included.

The project in question is included in the 2021 call for aid to promote actions aimed at the renaturalization and resilience of Spanish cities. The Orihuela City Council received a subsidy of 3,599,550 euros to undertake the di erent phases of the project, which has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience (PRTR), funded by the European Union-Next Generation EU.

The execution period that the winning company now has is ve months to draft the project for recovery actions for the banks of the Segura in di erent parts of the river upstream and downstream of the route itself, as it passes through Orihuela, where it is not the Segura Hydrographic Confederation

(CHS) carrying out these works. The project to be drafted proposes intervention in a new recovery section of the Segura river bank, in accordance with the recommendations of the basin organization and the sustainability paradigms of the river courses, which would expand the river bank area already restored or in the process of being restored, and which would generate a large green corridor.

This green corridor would link the recovery actions of the meanderings, returning the old route of the river, creating riverside forests and providing these spaces to laminate the ow in times of ooding.

At the same time, habitats

and ecosystems that had been diminished throughout the river course as it passes through the city will be regenerated.

The lateral connectivity of the river will also be improved through the recovery of coppices to facilitate ood lamination through the regeneration of riparian habitat.

Therefore, all actions will result in the recovery of native ora and fauna species and in the safeguarding of a river environment that enables its enjoyment by citizens through the environmental protection of the environment and the convenient landscape restoration of the route.

PM Pedro Sánchez halts public duties as wife faces inquiry

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has suspended public duties to “stop and re ect” on whether to remain in the job, after a court opened a preliminary inquiry into his wife. In a statement, the Spanish leader said he urgently needed to decide “whether I should continue to lead the government or renounce this honour”.

The court said it was responding to corruption claims against Begoña Gómez. His wife would defend her honour and work with the judiciary, he said, to make clear there was no substance to the allegations against her. The complaint against Begoña Gómez was raised by anti-corruption campaigners Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), who have taken part in a number of high-pro le court cases in recent years and are led by a man linked to the far right called Miguel Bernad.

Manos Limpias put out a statement signed by Mr Bernad acknowledging that its allegations might be false, because they were based on online newspaper stories: “If they are not true, it will be up to those that published them

to take responsibility for the falsehood.”

The Socialist prime minister said he would give a statement to the media after re ecting whether it was worth remaining in o ce “despite the mud” that the right and far right were trying to turn politics into.

In a lengthy statement on X, Mr Sánchez complained of a “strategy of harassment” over months aimed at weakening him politically and personally targeting his wife.

The court did not give details of the accusations against Begoña Gómez other than to say it had begun investigating allegations of in uence peddling and corruption on 16th April.

However, the Cadena Ser website published details of the Manos Limpias complaint, which included a list of allegations culled from news websites including El Con dencial and Voz Populi.

El Con dencial reported that the inquiry was looking into Begoña Gómez’s links to private companies that had secured government money or public contracts.

In particular, It cited a

“sponsorship agreement” involving tourism group Globalia and a foundation she ran in 2020 called IE Africa Centre. In 2020, Globalia secured a €475m (£407m) bailout for its airline Air Europa, as part of a series of government rescue packages for companies during the Covid-19 crisis.

The legal complaint was signed by Miguel Bernad, the head of Manos Limpias, which describes itself as a trade union and has in the past targeted politicians, bankers and King Felipe VI’s sister, Princess Cristina.

Spain’s conservative Popular Party (PP) demanded explanations in parliament to which the prime minister said simply that he believed in justice “despite everything”.

Upset

Spanish media said he had left parliament for his Madrid residence visibly upset. Hours later he accused PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo of working with far-right party Vox to bring him down. “I am not naive. I realise they are denouncing Begoña, not because she has done

anything illegal - they know there is no case - but because she is my wife,” he complained in his statement.

Political allies expressed support for Mr Sánchez, who has been in power since 2018, but his decision to suspend public duties comes at a tense time for his Socialist party ahead of European Parliament elections in June and elections in the Catalonia region of north-eastern Spain next month.

Pedro Sánchez leads an awkward coalition that includes two Catalan separatist parties, which were persuaded to join the government in return for an amnesty that covered a banned Catalan

referendum on secession in 2017.

Without the support of the Catalan Republican Left (ERC) and Together for Catalonia (JxCat) he would not have been able to stay in power, following an inconclusive election last year.

Opposition parties were outraged by the amnesty, which also means the former Catalan regional leader Carles Puigdemont will stand in next month’s regional vote, seven years after he ed imminent arrest and went into exile in Belgium.

Mr Puigdemont is still facing a terrorism case but believes the amnesty will enable him to return to Spain.

Man arrested for attacking youngsters in Orihuela

National Police and Local Police of Orihuela arrest a man, of Colombian nationality and 30 years old, very aggressive for injuries and damage in a case of gender violence. The agents intervened after the subject attacked some young people who were trying to mediate a dispute between a couple. During the arrest, a taser gun was used to restrain the attacker and prevent him from injuring himself.

The events occurred when a group of young people witnessed an argument between a couple and tried to intervene, but the man lost control, punched them several times and threw several stones that broke the front window of the vehicle in which they were traveling. When several National Police patrols arrived at the scene, they observed that the man had left, taking his 9-month-old son with him.

The police managed to locate the aggressor who tried to violently resist while threatening the o cers with a brick in one hand and, in the other, holding the minor he was using as a parapet. During the arrest, the author tried to take the rearm from one of the police o cers,

going so far as to attack another police o cer with an object in the face.

The detainee’s wife told the agents that minutes before the young people’s help, she had argued with her partner, and he had even tried to run her over with the vehicle from which she had gotten out seconds before due to said argument.

The detainee faces various charges in the Orihuela Guard Court of Instruction. The proceedings have been left open to assess the injuries of the young people who were involved in the argument and the damage that was caused to the vehicle.

Malú concert organisers to take legal action

The company organizing the controversial Malú concert in Orihuela has sent, through its legal office, a burofax to the City Council in which it requires that, within the non-extendable period of three days, it send the necessary documentation to formalize the contract in “the previously agreed terms. It warns in the writing that, if this requirement is not met within the stipulated period, legal action will be taken for damages.

The document indicates that after various communications, the company proceeded to hire the artist including the advance payment of 50% of the cache, but upon learning that the concert was

within a program not approved by the Council of the Orihuela Cultural municipal society and not obtaining a response to repeated requests for information, has generated great uncertainty and a significant risk for those interested if the concert is not held.

This fact came to light in the questions and answers section of last Thursday’s plenary session.

The Councilor for Culture, Gonzalo Montoya, has assured that there were previous negotiations with the organizing company, but neither a contract was signed nor a financial contribution made.

Albatera man accused of 177 crimnal acts

The individual, with a violent attitude, was in a municipal establishment hitting and breaking objects

Agents of the Albatera Local Police received a call reporting that an individual with a violent attitude was in an establishment in the municipality, hitting and breaking objects. The detained person had 177 related criminal acts and was on prison leave.

When the patrol arrived at the scene, the individual had already left. It was then that they received a new call reporting that said individual was on public roads

throwing stones at vehicles.

Once the alleged perpetrator of the events was located, at a moment in which he seemed to calm down, he lunged at one of the acting agents, punching him hard in the face; being immediately reduced, offering great resistance to arrest.

The detainee was taken to the emergency service where a doctor on duty administered a relaxant for his later transfer to judicial custody by a patrol of the Dolores Civil Guard.

Almoradí achieves zero debt after repaying its last loan

The Almoradí City Council has approved in full the early repayment of its entire debt. In this way, the council will cancel the three loans it has signed with credit institutions and which amounts to 342,000 euros.

The City Council indicates that Almoradí, at the beginning of this year, was already among the healthiest towns in Spain, with only 2.68% debt, far from the 110% allowed by fiscal rules.

With this early amortization of the debt “what we intend is to be able to make use of the remaining treasury that we have, since according to the fiscal rules to which we are subject, we could only use it at this time if we previously amortized this debt” as expressed in the councilor of the Treasury, Luciano Martínez, attended the plenary session.

The remaining available treasury, that is, the savings that this City Council has, after the operations approved in this plenary session exceeds seven million euros, with which the Government team, in the words of its mayor, María Gómez “will continue investing in large projects, maintaining the prudent and planned line of management,

and prioritizing the needs and common good of the people of Almoradi.

These remainders, which after this debt cancellation may be used by this City Council, are a complement to the general budget of each year and the subsidies received by other administrations to be able to cover extraordinary expenses and investments.

At the end of 2023, the government team fully carried out a budget modification, financed among other modalities with 2,200,000 euros from this remaining treasury, with which different subsidies will be supplemented, mostly coming from European funds and with which investments

will be made during 2024 and 2025 worth eight million euros.

Among these investments are the accessibility, energy efficiency, digitalization and modernization project of the downtown area that will benefit Almoradí’s commerce; the rehabilitation works of the Venancio Costa Pavilion; the reconstruction work of the old conservatory; different investments in the districts of Raiguero, Cruz de Galindo, El Saladar and Heredades; the construction of new niche galleries in the cemetery and completion of the existing ones and different sewage works in various areas of the municipality.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

The Civil Guard arrests three criminals for various robberies in Callosa de Segura

GBP

The pound dropped to a fresh year low at the end of last week’s trading sessions versus the USD as the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, Dave Ramsden, highlighted easing price pressures in the UK. This could suggest that he has become more open to the possibility of an interest rate cut sooner rather than later in the UK.

Ramsden appeared more relaxed on upcoming changes to interest rates in the UK during his speech in Washington on Friday evening, highlighting the fall in Consumer Price Indexes released earlier in the week and the trend of reducing price in ation for the UK that the CPI data has shown steadily since Autumn 2023. This, in his opinion, will see UK in ation heading back towards the Bank of England’s targeted 2pc range. The reiteration holds particular weight, given comments from Bank Governor Andrew Bailey earlier in the week, who also stated that there is strong evidence that UK in ation is falling. This disin ation (the rate on in ation falls but prices still rise, but at a slower pace) is the key focus for policymakers at present.

As usual though, the picture is anything but clear at the moment on when the Bank of England are likely to react to falling in ation, with some commentators suggesting that expectation for an interest rate cut in the UK has actually been delayed until August or September this year.

GBP’s lost ground coincides with these shifting expectations around interest rates, posting a fresh year low for GBP/USD and going back to levels not seen against the euro since early in the year. This GBP sell was exaggerated somewhat by the usual weekend illiquidity, as only the US markets remained open during Ramsden’s speech. However, it does demonstrate a reshift in expectations for a UK interest rate cut in June, with some expectation that the BoE may act sooner and begin to cut rates in their May meeting.

This week, PMI data was released across Europe, the US, and the UK. Although the results were mixed, broadly speaking, data from the UK was better than expected, with solid services results o setting slightly weaker readings from manufacturing and painting a positive picture overall in the composite readings. The UK Services PMI, which was higher than expected, moved from 53.1 to 54.9.

Following the releases, GBP recovered against both USD and EUR, with the pound mostly recovering against the dollar due to low US PMI readings, following year-todate lows seen earlier in the week.

The GBP/EUR recovery could be movement back into rangebound territory or driven by euro weakness as EUR/ USD, the most globally traded pair, continued to drop.

Additionally, yesterday, the Bank of England’s Chief Economist Huw Pill cautioned against ‘being lulled into a false sense of security’ as in ation seems set to ‘approach or even fall below’ its 2% target this spring. His words added to the ongoing narrative from the Bank of England that interest rate cuts might still be some way o . Markets now expect only two quarter point rate cuts from the central bank this year, down from six at the beginning of 2024.

EUR The Euro was bene tting from a weaker pound, due to speculation around interest rate cuts for the Bank of England earlier in the week. Last week we saw EUR/ USD in 1.06 levels, which is the lowest the pairing had been since 2nd November 2023. This week, rates have recovered over 1.07, in part due to market correction as the pairing has lost 3 cents this month.

The European Central Bank has also helped to stabilise expectations around interest rate changes in the Eurozone, providing more stability to the currency as a whole.

With rming expectations of a change in monetary policy in June’s meeting (barring any wild changes in economic conditions in the Zone), there is little of note in terms of data releases this week for the EU. PMI releases were broadly positive for the Eurozone as well, seeing a similar outcome to the UK, with positive services data o setting the slightly weaker manufacturing data. The overall result was the Eurozone’s composite PMI returning to expansionary territory with a reading of 51.4 against the forecasted 50.7, with key contributions from Germany.

The Orihuela Guard Court has ordered the imprisonment of the individual accused of reception, while the other two involved have been provisionally released.

Work on the Benejúzar bike lane are completed

The Benejúzar City Council has announced the end of the bike lane works in the town. An infrastructure of more than two kilometers that connects the urban area, the industrial estate and the leisure areas of the municipality in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. The project has had a total cost of 181,500 euros , financed in part through a subsidy of 150,000 euros from the Generalitat Valenciana framed in the call for actions to promote sustainable mobility of local entities included in the Vega Renhace Plan. The Councilor for Infrastructure, José Antonio Martínez , explained that these works represent “a backbone for the municipality, by

including in their route places highly frequented by the residents of Benejúzar, which allows them to access them safely and healthy”. The action aims to create a cleaner environment, change citizens’ habits to reduce car use and at the same time promote healthy living.

The route links with the route executed previously, expanding it through four itineraries. In this way, the cycle path runs through Almendro, Virgen del Pilar and Limonar streets around the skate park , connecting with Término street and Maestro Bernabé road; entering the last section attached to the Pilarica ravine until the junction

with the Camino de Rubes.

Regarding the section that runs along Juan Carlos I Avenue, cyclist traffic is diverted through the adjacent service roads to be converted into cycle streets, with the aim of preserving the existing parking spaces in this area.

For his part, the mayor of Benejúzar, Vicente Cases , has pointed out the importance of this action “for a municipality like ours, where the population is very accustomed to both the use of bicycles in their usual trips, as well as their use for sport practice”. The mayor has also indicated the “increasing need to implement local initiatives such as the one we have presented today, aimed at caring for the natural environment and the environment.”

This beautiful working lighthouse is situated in the Sierra Helada Natural Park, between Benidorm and Alta. Perched on a high rock with spectacular views overlooking the sea, this short walking route is ideal for all age groups to enjoy. The lighthouse was built in 1863, and the original approach to it was via a winding and often treacherous pathway close to the sea, only accessible by donkey

Today, the lighthouse is now reformed, automated and powered by renewable solar energy, and has been improved by a good tarmac access. It has an information centre serving as a small museum with old photographs and equipment from the early days, and is open every day from 9am to 2pm with

free entrance. Parking and toilets are located at Camí Vell del Far, 39, 03581 l’Alfàs del Pi, Alicante.

From here it is just under an hour’s walk, at a gentle pace to reach the lighthouse. The pathway is suitable for bicycles, pushchairs, wheelchairs, and for dog walking.

Europe sets date for prohibition of diesel and petrol cars

Following the adoption of the Euro 7 standard, scheduled to take e ect in 2027, the European Union has established a timetable for transitioning European roads away from combustion engines to vehicles powered by renewable energy.

Under the new regulation, the NOx limit for diesel remains at 80 mg/km, but it must now be maintained for 10 years and 200,000 kilometers.

The most contentious decision revolves around the ban on marketing cars powered by diesel and petrol, set for 2035. Despite Spain’s request to postpone this deadline to 2040, it has been denied.

Furthermore, according to the EU’s timetable, the phase-out of combustion engines is imminent. By 2050, as agreed upon by the European Parliament in

June 2022, fossil fuel-powered cars will be prohibited from all European roads.

Nevertheless, some experts anticipate that there will still be a signi cant number of petrol and diesel cars on the roads, and it may take several more years before all vehicles in the EU run on renewable energies.

TV Streaming Device promising unlimited access to premium cable channels and streaming platforms for free. Hundreds of disappointed buyers have reported this heavily marketed streaming stick fails miserably to deliver those outrageous capabilities claimed in the slick ads.

This is a widespread bait-andswitch scam that manages to secure lucrative payments upfront for near-worthless $5 units by relying on carefully fabricated claims and demonstrations.

The Aunlu TV Streaming Device scam relies on wildly fabricated claims of proprietary technology developed in Silicon Valley to exploit cable and media company feeds to unlock free access to any channel or streaming content. However, the device shipped out after purchase for up to $150 is merely an unlabelled $5 streaming stick available on Chinese e-commerce sites.

Spaniards resigned to the inevitability of climate change

In Spain, the surrender to despair in the face of climate change escalated rapidly, reaching a remarkable rate. The percentage of Spanish ‘doomers’, those who believed global warming was unstoppable, soared to one of the highest in Europe. This trend surfaced annually on April 22nd, International Earth Day, when a census monitored people’s shifting perceptions regarding the threat of global warming across 33 countries on five continents.

While the majority of Spain’s populace continued to endorse plans and measures aimed at mitigating the greatest current risk to life on Earth, apathy was on the rise. More individuals now saw no harm in resigning themselves to what they deemed an inevitability. Pessimism steadily burgeoned over the last three years, particularly in the past twelve months. According to the Ipsos poll, 25% of Spaniards, one in four, believed climate change was spiraling out of control, with no hope of slowing or preventing its havoc. Spanish climate fatigue was second only to the French in Europe, albeit by a mere 1% (26%).

Those advocating for Spain to take more substantial

action against climate change accounted for 62%, but that marked a five-point decline from the previous year. While the majority seemed to remain committed, it was disconcerting to note that nearly a third held the opposite view – that the country, its industrial framework, and its inhabitants were being asked to make too many sacrifices to combat global warming.

The section of questions best illustrating the rapid rise of those ready to capitulate was the one gauging whether non-action on climate change constituted a failure to everyone else. While a majority still concurred, this figure dwindled annually since 2022, with an average decrease of 16% over the last two years.

Criticism towards national, regional, or local leaders for their lack of ambition in fighting climate change dropped from 70% in 2022 to 59% this year. This mirrored the decline in those faulting companies for not committing to the cause and those believing individuals neglecting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions were betraying future generations, down twelve points within two years from 73% to 61%.

The surge of climate doomers was more pronounced among men than women in Spain, particularly worrying as this trend prevailed among younger age groups. Millennials, in their thirties, stood out with 28% subscribing to the belief in an inevitable climate catastrophe, three points above the average. They were notably more resigned than their baby boomer predecessors, among whom only 19% harbored pessimism.

The most telling question reflecting the resignation of young Spaniards was whether small changes in daily lives could make a big impact on climate change. While 70% of women and 60% of men in Spain supported the effectiveness of personal commitment, the disparity was stark across generations. Baby boomers, aged 60 to 78, were 76% in favor, in contrast to only 43% of Generation Z (or zoomers), those in their twenties, making them 33 points more skeptical. Additionally, 26% of male respondents and 25% of male twenty-somethings argued against changing their behavior, believing it futile. This pessimism was shared by only 16% of females and baby boomers alike.

Torrevieja City Council faces a 4.5 million payment for the bus station to create a park

The private bus terminal in Torrevieja now occupies 2,253 square meters and has been valued by the City Council at a cost of 4,588,207 euros. This valuation is part of a speci c modi cation (110) of the General Urban Planning Plan of Torrevieja, aimed at transforming the current private parking lot and bus station into a green area.

Recently, the Local Government Board approved the consolidated valuation report of the site, conducted by the company Técnicos en Tasación. The plot, bordered

Antonio Machado, Patricio Zammit, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, and del Mar streets, has an estimated acquisition value of 4,588,207 euros. However, the complete block covers an area of 3,367 square meters, and to make it all municipal property, another plot described in the modi cation needs to be added. This additional 1,114 square meters, located next to Patricio Zammit Street, has not yet been appraised.

During the local government meeting, the idea of converting the area into a recreational space was

discussed. The municipal government aims to create this space in an urban area with high density due to the proximity of public facilities, such as the Palace of Justice, the main Civil Guard barracks, a municipal multipurpose building, the municipal archive, the Local Development Agency, and a major Mercadona store. Additionally, the Colonia San Esteban neighborhood, with its high density of buildings, emphasizes the need to increase green spaces adjacent to the HabanerasAntonio Machado avenue.

Young woman in intensive care after swallowing insects in coffee from a machine at Mallorca airport

An airline worker was admitted to intensive care after drinking co ee from a vending machine at Palma airport in Mallorca that contained insects on Monday 22 April.

According to sources the incident was reported to the airport police station after the woman allegedly went to a machine at the airport that is “accessible to the public” and bought a co ee.

After taking just a few sips she began to feel unwell and

had to be treated urgently by the airport medical services, who administered adrenaline to her.

An ambulance was then called and the employee was admitted to hospital, where she was still in ICU on Wednesday 24 April according to the same sources.

British brands Barbour and Specsavers join forces to launch exclusive collection

This spring, Specsavers has partnered with British heritage lifestyle brand Barbour to launch an exclusive collection of optical and sunglasses frames and this collection is now available in all nine Specsavers Ópticas stores in Spain.

With a fresh twist on classic shapes, the collection is inspired by Barbour’s modern countryside style and features colours and patterns inspired by the great British outdoors.

The new collection features 13 optical frames and 3 sunglasses for both men and women, as well as 4 kids frames. Each perfectly encapsulates the brand’s iconic style and timeless look. The premium crafted and durable designs take cues from Barbour’s renowned wax jackets through the understated use of tartan and houndstooth prints in a variety of timeless eyewear shapes.

The Barbour story began in 1894 in the coastal town of South Shields in the North East of England when founder John Barbour began selling oilskins to the mariners and fishermen to protect them from the worst of the British weather. Today, Barbour is a 5th generation family-owned global lifestyle business providing outerwear, clothing, accessories and footwear for men, women and children and remains true to its founding values of quality,

durability, attention to detail and fitness for purpose.

Commenting on the collection, Specsavers Style Editor Bianca Swan said: “We’re so excited to welcome Barbour into our portfolio of designer brands.

Off the back of the popularity of quiet luxury trends in 2023, we’re now seeing a rise in the country core aesthetic. This is characterised by a focus on tradition and timeless quality, we feel there’s a clear synergy between both the Barbour and Specsavers brands.

With the launch of this collection, we hope to bring Barbour’s classic countryside style to the urban highstreet, so that every customer can find a style to suit them.”

David Godfrey, Regional Manager Distributor Markets, EMEA & Licensing, Barbour “We are delighted to partner with Specsavers on this eyewear collection which perfectly captures the heritage of Barbour. It incorporates our classic British style in textures and patterns synonymous with Barbour, reimagined for everyday wear from the city to the country.”

We all have hair on our bodies that we wish we didn’t have. From our legs to our faces to our underarms, we spend hours of our lives shaving, waxing, and removing that unwanted hair.

But there is a better way and here at Indiana’s hair and lash boutique we are so excited to announce this treatment is now available at Indiana’s hair & lash boutique …

Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal is one of the most e ective ways to remove unwanted body hair. If you’re tired of shaving and waxing but aren’t quite sure if you’re ready for laser treatment, keep reading.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a simple process, as long as it’s performed by a trained laser technician.

Here’s

A trained technician applies a laser light to the area of unwanted hair. The pulses of light emitted by the laser attack the hair and the follicle, destroying the hair at the root and preventing it from growing back.

Hair grows in three di erent phases, and for the laser to e ectively destroy the root, the hair needs to be in the growth phase.

It is for this reason that multiple treatments are required. In order to capture each hair in that growth phase, you will need to have several sessions spaced out roughly four weeks apart.

Laser hair removal is the best method for permanent hair removal. Do’s and don’ts before, and after laser hair removal

Before laser hair removal

Firstly, before you undergo laser treatment, you must not expose the treated area to the sun or a sun bed.

A sunscreen of SPF 30, or preferably a total sun block of SPF 50, should be applied whenever exposure to the sun is unavoidable.

You must avoid plucking, waxing or bleaching the hair for six weeks prior to treatment. Preserving the root and the pigment of the hair is imperative for the success of the laser treatment.

About Barbour

Originally established by John Barbour in 1894 in South Shields in the North East of England to provide outerwear to fishermen, sailors and mariners to protect them from the worst of the British weather, today Barbour offers a complete wardrobe of clothes, accessories and footwear for men, women and children. Shirts, knitwear, trousers, footwear and accessories are now just as much in demand as Barbour’s iconic outerwear.

Forever synonymous with the British countryside, Barbour’s collections now span from the best practical country clothing to fashion-forward lifestyle collections. To this day Barbour’s ranges continue to be inspired by the company’s archives which date back to 1910 – each season classic designs are re-interpreted into modern, contemporary silhouettes.

In 1998, in conjunction with Kinloch Anderson, renowned tartan specialists based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Barbour developed the first of their own

exclusive tartans, the Classic Tartan based on the sett of the Ayrshire District Tartan from where the Barbour family had originated. Followed in 2002 by the Dress Tartan, Barbour’s tartans are a signature of the brand.

A family-owned 5th generation brand established 130 years ago, Barbour is a global success story sold in over 55 countries worldwide including Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the US and Japan. In 2020, Barbour launched

It is important to shave the area to be treated the day or night before your appointment. Doing this will prevent thermal injury to the surface of the skin as there won’t be hair on the surface to absorb the laser’s energy. It will allow the laser to go directly to the hair follicle. It will also let the skin heal in case the surface is cut whilst shaving.

After laser hair removal Immediately following treatment the area may show erythema (redness and some swelling) around the follicles which looks similar to large goose bumps.

Around 2 or 3 weeks after a laser hair removal treatment 10 to 20% of the treated hairs will fall out. During

the healing phase, the area must be treated delicately. Do not rub or scratch.

Avoid sports and strenuous exercise for two days following the treatment for laser hair removal. Walking is encouraged though.

Avoid very hot baths, showers, steam baths or saunas, and don’t swim in strong chlorinated water for two or three days. Don’t use bleaching creams or perfume products for 24 to 48 hours. Avoid exfoliating or peels for one week. Try to avoid wearing tight clothing for two or three days.

Our two daughters have turned out to be a bitter disappointment. They’ve had every opportunity imaginable; they have wanted for nothing. We bought them both a car when they turned 18, we pay for their mobile phones, and gave them deposits for houses; hoping to get them on the property ladder; both, spent the money on holidays, partying and nail and hair appointments. Our eldest has ended up living on benefits, and our youngest is now also refusing to find a job, as she says it is a lifestyle choice not to work. We are heartbroken. Both are still under our roof and are approaching 30. We hoped they would follow our example, and adopt the work ethic ...we didn’t raise them to live like this. Their father and I fear that they will never leave home and be independent.

Children need to be taught how to prepare to live independently, right from the get go. You gave them every material thing they needed, rather than teaching them how to be responsible and stand on their own two feet. They are taking the easy option, and this it seems is becoming an

epidemic of modern day living. It might be too late to help them now, but if you want things to change you must stop the handouts. Tell them they must find employment and if they are in receipt of benefits, they must pay the bulk of it in house keeping to you and your husband. Sit them down and go through the household finances, so that they realise how much the cost of living really is. Your longer email also tells me that you pay for things like their car insurance, and car maintenance. Again, you are only enabling the situation by doing this. Once they realise that unless they get a job, and they won’t be able to afford even the basic of things, they may change their ways. Tough love is required.

Compliance with speed limits, the objective of Europe’s tra c p lice

Last year, in the DGT area and with 24-hour data, 211 fatal accidents were recorded in which speed was the concurrent factor.

Throughout this year, Tra c will install 88 new radars and 60% of them will be section radars. Most will be placed on conventional roads, where 7 out of 10 fatal accidents take place.

All new vehicles registered as of July 6, 2024, must have a series of advanced safety functions (ADAS), among which is the Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA).

the General Directorate of Tra c presented a new edition of its speci c control campaigns focused this time on speed monitoring as one of the key risk factors in road accidents.

Inadequate speed is the third most common concurrent factor in tra c accidents, especially in those with fatalities. In 2023, with 24-hour data within the DGT scope, 211 fatal accidents were recorded in which this factor was present.

The campaign took place last week through the agents of the Tra c Group of the Civil Guard, as well as the rest of the local police o cers who join it, with the aim of controlling especially sections of risk associated with speed, as well as those points where tra c exceeds the established limit and there is a high accident rate, all following the recommendations of international

and European organizations that urge the agencies in charge of road safety in the di erent countries to monitor that the established speed limits are complied with.

As this is a campaign also developed at the European level by the RoadPol association (European Roads Policing Network), surveillance will not only be carried out in Spain but in all the countries that are members of said association.

Taking into account its preventive nature, the existence of controls will be announced to drivers, either through variable message panels or through circumstantial vertical signage when the road does not have such panels.

It has been shown that speed not only a ects the risk of being involved in a tra c accident but also that the higher the speed, the more di cult it will be to react in time to prevent the accident and the more serious the injuries caused as a result of it.

For this reason, with the aim of reducing the number, not only of fatal accidents but also of serious injuries, Tra c will install, throughout this year, 88 new radars, 60% of which will be section radars.

In addition, the majority will be placed on conventional roads, where 7 out of 10 fatal accidents take place.

Based on the results of the European Baseline Project ,

with regard to speed, the level of compliance with the speed limit established in Spain varies depending on the type of road:

While on highways 63% of passenger cars travel at the permitted speed (high value compared to other countries), on highways this percentage drops to 51%. In the case of conventional roads, which present the greatest risks, compliance with the established speed limit is 43%, a low level, similar to that recorded in Belgium (46%).

On urban roads with a 50km/h limit, the level of speed compliance by passenger cars is 65%, the third highest value of the 13 countries with which we share the limit.

For its part, on 30 km/h streets, the level of compliance is 32%, the highest value of the three countries for which data is available. It should also be noted that the average speed of passenger cars on streets 30 is 11 km/h lower than that on streets 50 (36 versus 47 km/h), a di erence that represents a great reduction in the risk of a fatal collision. or serious.

All new vehicles registered as of July 6, 2024, must have a series of advanced safety functions, the socalled ADAS, among which is the Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA). This system, made up of the vehicle’s navigator, which shows the speed limit on the road being driven, and a sign recognition system that complements digital mapping and detects temporary speed limitations, helps the driver know and respect speed limits, thus contributing to improving road safety.

Ana Ribera runner up in 5k

Last weekend the Spanish Master Championship in the 5K distance was held and the Vega Baja region left its mark on Don Benito. Especially with the outstanding performance of Ana Ribera from Almoradi .

The athlete from the Puerto de Torrevieja Athletics Club returned home with the silver medal hanging around her neck after second position in the Women’s Master’s General Classi cation. Therefore, she was also runnerup in Spain in her M40 category.

th y shua pre icts h ill i the ht between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk

With the highly anticipated clash between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk drawing closer on May 18th in Saudi Arabia, Anthony Joshua, a prominent figure in the heavyweight boxing realm, has weighed in with his prediction for the impending showdown.

Originally scheduled for an earlier date, the bout was postponed due to an injury Fury sustained during his training camp, heightening the anticipation surrounding this long-awaited confrontation.

Fury, the reigning WBC champion, is gearing up to defend his title against Usyk, who holds the WBA, WBO, and IBF titles, thus raising the stakes of the encounter.

Reflecting on the outcome, Joshua, drawing from his own experience of facing Usyk in the ring, praised the Ukrainian as a formidable adversary,

expressing confidence in his ability to excel in the forthcoming match.

“I’ve fought Usyk so I can only speak on what I’ve experienced with him - phenomenal fighter, I would say he’s gonna do a really good job,” he told TalkSport.

“I’ve never fought Fury, so I can’t speak on what it’s like to face him. Only speaking on what I know, I have to say Usyk will be victorious.”

Almoradi presents its biggest sporting event

The Councilor for Sports of Almoradí, Carmen Berná, has presented, together with the president of the Almoradí Trikilómetros Athletics Club, Antonio Ramón Rodríguez, the zone director of Caja Rural Central, Javier Fabregat and the director of the Caja Rural Central, Fernando Ferrández, the event most crowded in the town, which will be held next Saturday, May 4, at 7:00 p.m., with start and nish at the Sadrián Stadium.

Registration for the 5k and 10k can be made until Thursday, May 2 at 10:00 p.m. The registration fee is €12 and all registrations will be made online on the “ Asuspuestos

” platform. The minimum age to participate in the test is 16 years old with parental permission and the collection of numbers will take place on the same Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the Sadrián Stadium athletics track.

The Sports Councilor concluded the press conference by encouraging everyone to participate or accompany the athletes on this day, since the streets of Almoradí will be alive with a great atmosphere. She also wanted to thank Caja Rural Central for its great commitment to sports in the municipality, with which she collaborates very intensely.

Abbey Anglers

On Tuesday the 23rd of April we made the short journey into Murcia town centre to sh the 7th round of The Abbey Spring cup. 12 anglers attended and we shed 4 before the rst bridge with the rest following on. After consultation with our local weather expert Richard” Michael Fish” Wood who stated that we were in for a lovely day, most of us left our wet weather gear in the carpark. Sure enough after about 30 minutes into the match it started to throw it down. In fairness this only lasted about 20 minutes and the rest of the match was shed in bright sunny conditions. This can be a very moody river and although conditions did look perfect the sh were very reluctant to feed. Winner on the day on the end peg near to the crystal bridge was Dennis Clark. Dennis shed the feeder with maggots or corn and weighed 13.62kg.

In second place was the disgraced weatherman, Richard Wood who used similar tactics from peg 7 for 10.92kg.

Bill cannon took third place. Drawn before the rst bridge he has several small carp in the opening 5 casts but slowed down and eventually managed 7.33kg on the feeder again with corn or maggots.

I took 4th place from peg 2 and after not having a bite for 4 hours caught 6 carp one after the other to weigh 7.28kg. I shed an 8mm pellet on the method feeder tight to the far bank and this just showed how unpredictable this river can be.

Extra Thursday Match

On Thursday the 25th of April we shed the River Segura at Murcia town centre. This should have been a Carp R Us match but they have decided that they are no longer shing this area or Argos.

3 members from Carp r Us, myself

Ian Brown, Nick Bastock and Alan Smith along with two committee members from Abbey, Richard King and Richard wood, decided to sh. We shed 4 this side of the 1st bridge and 1 after. As per usual at the venue the shing was a bit patchy to say the least.

Alan and Richard King really struggled on the rst two pegs to catch and threw back about 3kg each

Richard Wood on peg three caught nothing for 3 hours then caught steadily on the method feeder with bread and corn for 11.08kg. Nick Bastock on peg 4 only had 1 carp so wrapped up and went home to walk his dog.

I was drawn on peg 5, the rst one after the bridge and caught virtually all day. I shed the method feeder with 8mm pellet throwing towards the pontoon across and had 13 carp and two Carassio to win the match with 14.80kg. Massive thanks to Carp R us for letting us use the permit.
