emergency centre alerting them to the situation. the woman had been held for at least three days in a house in an urbanisation of rojales, according to the councillor for citizen security, Lourdes López.

offices stormed the property and released the young woman, who had sustained injuries during her ordeal. the man resisted arrest and attacked the officers before being subdued. the case has been passed to the almoradí civil Guard in order to continue with the necessary procedures and make further investigations into the crimes.

Meanwhile, Guardia civil officers have arrested two men, one in torrevieja and one in Guardamar, and a further two are under investigation - all for internet fraud and money laundering. operation ‘Bulldog’ was launched after a member of the public reported that he had been scammed out of money, paying for a mobile phone on-line that never arrived. it is believed that the gang conned more than 70 people, across spain.

the operation began last summer when civil Guard officers belonging to the teruel team and the organic Unit of the Judicial Police investigated the mobile phone purchase. the investigation allowed the officers to uncover how the members of the organisation used a fraudulent website, which imitated a well-known mobile phone manufacturer. the victims shopped on-line for mobile phones and were directed to the site, completely unaware it was bogus. after selecting a product, they were asked for a series of personal information, including their email address.

Following the purchase, the gang sent an invoice through the email provided with the payment instructions to make a bank transfer, but once paid, they never received the products they had bought.

after receiving the money, the criminalslaundered money through local atMs and invested it in digital currency.

the local men were brought before teruel investigating court number 3, which ordered that the two detainees be sent to prison.

Benidorm’s Brit arsonist banned from country

a British man has been banned entering spain for ten years after he deliberately started fires. the wild fires devastated more than two hectares of the sierra helada natural park in Benidorm last year.

the expulsion order for the 63-yearold will take effect from 31st May this year, almost a year after his June 2022 last year. the unnamed man from scotland has been in custody since his arrest and was given a three year jail sentence by the alicante Provincial court. he will have served 11 months behind bars by the end of May, which makes him eligible for early release and

will be deported back to the UK. in addition, the court fined him €7,200 and he will also have to pay compensation of nearly €12,000 to the Valencian government and alicante

Provincial council to cover the cost of sending fire crews to extinguish the blaze.

a speedy response from the emergency services prevented a more serious incident with planes dropping gallons of water over the area. scrubland and pine trees were devastated, but luckily, despite the fire starting close to several properties, the blaze was contained and there was no

damage to people’s houses.

the man never admitted his guilt until his recent trial and his reason for starting the fire at the sierra helada have never been revealed.

the court heard he deliberately started fires at three different points of the natural park on 22nd June with the express intention of causing destruction. he was arrested by Benidorm Policia Local officers as he came down from the mountain area and officers searched the backpack he was carrying. inside they found several lighters used to commit the arson.

Shopping Centre grant for Torrevieja

the secretary of state for trade, within the recovery, transformation and resilience Plan financed by the european Union, has awarded a grant of 1,530,892 euros to the torrevieja city council to go ahead with an ‘open shopping centre’. the money has been awarded as part of an initiative to encourage competitiveness, innovation and modernisation of the urban commercial area of torrevieja.

the news was announced by the councillor for commerce and hospitality, rosario Martínez, who stressed that the project has five basic elements. in terms of digital transformation, 287,000 euros will be used to develop a market place and the installation of digital billboards. transformation of the point of sale, with

a budget of 427,000 euros will see the installation of automated ticket offices for the collection and return of online orders,

universal accessibility to shops and the placement of sunshade awnings in the pedestrian streets of the open shopping center. the third element is related to sustainability, with an allocation of 394,000 euros. this includes the purchase of zero-emission vehicles, installation of solar lighting in public furniture and the creation of new landscaped, accessible, and pet-friendly rest areas. the implementation of the open shopping centre has also been with a generic 533,000 euros.

Working together within this open shopping centre and, hand-in-hand with the main associations of the city sector, aPYMeco, the association of hospitality companies of torrevieja and comarca and

the merchants of La Plasa, it is intended that the commercial offer of the city becomes a benchmark across the Vega Baja and the Province of alicante. the councillor of commerce confirmed that this week a period of public consultation and participation will be opened, and interviews will be carried out with more than 60 selected city establishments to assess the form of management that will be chosen. the proposal presented by the torrevieja city council has been delivered ahead of Valencia or Barcelona, also being the second best valued technological project in the Valencian community.

Zenia Boulevard revamp

an 18-million-euro revamp is underway at Zenia Boulevard, the largest shopping centre in alicante Province. the work is being carried out at night to minimise disruption to shoppers, and shops and restaurants are open as usual. the entertainment programme will also continue with concerts, workshops and promotions carrying on as scheduled.

over the next few months, the facades, pavements, and all public areas including children’s leisure areas, will be revamped. the centre is home to more than 150 shops, bars and restaurants including big-name brands such as Media Markt, Primark, Leroy Merlin, h&M, Primark and

alcampo supermarket.

Zenia Boulevard opened in september 2012 and welcomed 14 million visitors last year. it is owned by american firm cBre investment Management.

cBre general director for spain and Portugal, antonio

simontalero, said: “With our commitment to excellence, we will increase the high standards that Zenia Boulevard has offered since its opening and consolidate its position as one of the best centres in the province and spain.”

said that the company works daily to maintain the supply networks and avoid water losses, although he has highlighted the importance of working to raise awareness of demand.

“there has been an increase in subscribers, but the demand per subscriber has dropped”, pointed out sergio sánchez, who considered that “this is partly due to the campaigns we carry out on the use of water”. “it is good to have one day a year with an extracurricular activity that makes the message reach the children and then they transfer it to the families,” he added.

Brit arrested in cannabis clubs raids

civil Guard officers have arrested four people in torrevieja – one a 24-year-old-Brit – and closed two cannabis clubs in the city. those arrested were part of a gang dedicated to drug trafficking in premises registered as cannabis clubs, located in leisure areas which attracted youths and minors. these clubs operate under strict guidelines which were allegedly being ignored and drugs were being openly sold in the premises. a few months ago, the civil Guard of torrevieja were told of irregular movements at two cannabis clubs in torrevieja. these clubs were both in designated leisure areas which attracted teenagers and youths. For clarification, the consumption of marijuana and its derivatives inside cannabis

clubs, being these private and closed premises, are under the legal protection but governed by strict rules. the act of cultivation, preparation or illegal trafficking of narcotic and psychotropic substances, or that otherwise promote, favour or facilitate the illegal consumption of toxic drugs, as well as possession and consumption on public roads, is totally prohibited. officers carried out surveillance and from the public road it was easy to see that cannabis was being smoked inside, a fact that can promote or encourage the consumption of substances. officers also noted the illegal purchase by customers of substances such as hashish, marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms. the clubs were raided by the

police and two men, one British and the other spanish, aged 24 and 28, respectively and two women, one spanish aged 30 and the other a 35-year-old romanian. during the raid 1,600 grams of marijuana, 590 grams of hashish, 24 joints prepared for sale, 20 doses of cannabis derivatives, dosing bags, 5 precision scales, 2 brass knuckles, 4 large daggers and 7,000 euros in cash were all confiscated. the detainees were charged with belonging to a criminal organisation and another against public health for drug trafficking and the premises were judicially closed. the detainees and the seized effects were placed at the disposal of the investigating court number 2 of torrevieja.

Security law reform fails

a proposed reform of a contested security law in spain has failed after catalan and Basque parties voted against it in a parliamentary commission, arguing it did not go far enough.dubbed the “Gag Law” by those who oppose it, the legislation passed in 2015 by a previous conservative government allows authorities to impose hefty fines against unauthorised demonstrations or in case of attempts to block home evictions. the law was seen as an attempt by the government to curb social unrest and protests against its austerity measures.critics, including amnesty international and other rights groups, argue it limits free expression and violates the right to protest.

a reform of the law put forward by socialist Prime Minister Pedro sanchez’s minority coalition government proposed several changes, including lowering some fines and slashing the time suspects arrested at protests may be held in custody.

But catalan separatist party erc and Basque pro-independence party Bildu - which usually help the government pass legislation -opposed the reform because the

Princess Leonor to start military training

law would continue to allow police to use rubber bullets. the two parties also objected that the law would still allow pushbacks of migrants at spain’s borders by security forces.

Bildu lawmaker Jon inarritu told spanish press his party voted against the proposed reform because it maintains “the repressive corpus of the previous ‘gag law’”.

it seems difficult for the government to propose another reform of the security law and get it approved by parliament before a general election, which is expected in december.

“this reform would have been desirable,” government spokeswoman isabel rodriguez told a news conference following a weekly cabinet meeting. “it is a shame that a law that was expected by citizens could not be adopted,” she added.

thousands of spanish police officers protested in Madrid earlier this month against the planned to reform the security law. they were especially angered that under the proposed reform, the taking of photographs or making of recordings of police at demonstrations would no longer be classified as a serious offence.

spain’s crown Princess Leonor will begin three years of military training in september as she prepares to one day take the throne, the government has announced.King Felipe Vi’s oldest daughter, who turns 18 in october, will attend the spanish army’s General Military academy in the north-eastern city of Zaragoza during the 202324 academic year, defence Minister Margarita robles said.

the heir to the spanish throne will then spend a year at a navy school in the north-western region of Galicia and a year at an air force school in the south-eastern region of Murcia, the minister told a news conference.

the royal Palace believes she “must receive military training, as her father his majesty the king did, and as is done in other parliamentary monarchies,” robles said.

“in recent years we have made a significant effort to incorporate women

Princess Leonor is expected to complete two years at the UWc atlantic college boarding school in Wales at the end of May, graduating with her international Baccalaureate.

if she follows in the footsteps of her father, she will attend university in spain once she finishes her military training and then complete a masters abroad.King Felipe studied law at Madrid’s complutense University then obtained a masters in international relations at Georgetown University in Washington.

spain’s royal Palace said: “it is a widely observed and shared tradition in european parliamentary monarchies that future heads of state develop a miliary career.”

it recalled in a statement that under spain’s constitution, Princess Leonor will become the head of the armed forces when she ascends the throne.

“the excellent results of 2022 show the strength of our business model,” said inditex chief executive oscar Garcia Maceiras. inditex, like many other Western companies, closed shop in russia last year following the invasion of Ukraine and sweeping Western sanctions against Moscow.the group shut its 514 stores in russia, its second biggest market after spain.the shops were sold to emirati group daher, which has business interests in retail and real estate, in october.inditex said strong sales in other markets such as the United states - now its second largest market - as well as online made up for its exit from the russian market.

the company said it plans to undertake “at least” 30 new projects in the United states between 2023 and 2025 in cities such as Boston, chicago, Los angeles and new York.the projects include enlargements of existing stores, opening new stores and relocations.

“We see significant long-term growth opportunities in the United states,” the company said.

online sales hit 7.8 billion euros, a 4.0 percent rise over the previous record set in 2021.the company said it plans to improve its online shopping experience by introducing tools such as a new size recommender and better search tools.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

GBP in any normal week, the UK Budget would make major headlines for markets. this week being what it was, the Budget* came and went without too much of a fuss, and this may be party due to the fact that the chancellor pretty much stuck to expectations in terms of changesas he outlined his plans for growth. For any of you who may have missed the details, and as expected, the previously announced increase in corporation tax from 19% to 25% was carried through. in other tax benefits, hunt froze fuel duty for another year, scrapped the lifetime allowance on tax-free pension contributions and extended the government’s help with energy bills for another three months. chancellor hunt also stated that the oBr (office of budget responsibly) now think that the UK will avoid a recession this year.that statement looks realistic given the recent news that growth exceeded estimates, yet again. it is also quite an achievement given how downbeat expectations were for the UK economy, just a few months ago.in other news, the recent trend of stronger than expected UK economic data continues, with the latest employment report highlighting that key iLo unemployment remained at 3.7%, having been expected to have risen to 3.8%. despite all of this, next week’s Boe meeting now has an air of mystery around it, given events elsewhere. the chances of a halt in rate rises from the Boe have increased substantially since Monday, but as we have said on the FoMc (see Usd) we will have to wait and see how markets settle before the meeting, and then what the Boe ultimately think about it all. as for the pound, well the broader pound has had a sterling week, with GBP/eUr rising toa two-month high, and posting steady gains elsewhere, as the risks of a UK economic underperformance diminish considerably. GBP/Usd has also remained above 1.2000, yet below 1.2200, which is also a fairly solid return for the pound, given the moves in favour of the safe-haven dollar elsewhere.

EURO in a much anticipated move, the ecB raised euro

of Electronic Money and Payment services and with the Central Bank of Ireland for the provision of designated investment business under European Union (Markets in Financial Instruments) Regulations 2017 (firm reference number C184118).

Moneycorp Technologies Limited, Sucursal en España, with Spanish tax

area rates by 50bps from 2.5 to 3% yesterday, resolutely sticking to their forward guidance. several members within the ecB had voted for a pause, according to christine Lagarde. however, the hike came after a week of heightened market turbulence, with bank stocks in particular coming under intense selling pressures, after the sVB crisis morphed into a broader run on supposedly vulnerable assets. in europe, credit suisse was forced into seeking a chF50bn lifeline from the swiss national Bank (snB), with part of the package including the buyback of chF3bn of their debt, as the bank attempted to boost liquidity and calm nervous investors. the snB are set to announce their latest interest rate decision next week. despite the ecB telling us otherwise, their latest hike was no forgone conclusion, with markets also clearly split on whether it would be the right move from the ecB. Fighting inflation is one thing, but if the ecB are raising rates into an economy that suddenly falls off a cliff, then they could be forced to reverse their decision fairy quickly, as inflation will quickly take care of itself in that environment. of course, were they to have paused yesterday, then a nervous market could rightly question whether the ecB knew more than the rest of us, and that itself could have then led to further market disruption. darned if you do, darned if you don’t. the ecB did remove the line suggesting that they will ‘keep raising interest rates at a steady pace’, from their accompanying statement, which is a clear sign that yesterday may be the last hike for a while, which makes sense to us. the immediate market reaction has been fairly positive, but these are early days, and we are not out of the woods yet.

as for the single currency, well eUr/Usd has remained at the mercy of the broader dollar moves, despite remaining within a 1.0500 – 1.0700 range for the most part. if markets settle, then a break above on the topside looks favoured, however, this fluid backdrop makes short-term directional outcomes far harder to call. as for key data, next week is dominated by regional PMi data, assuming that markets move on and revert back to focussing on the numbers again.

Local government board awards lighting contract

the councillor for Quality of Urban services of the city of torrevieja, sandra sanchez, reports that it has been approved by the Local Government Board (JGL) the award of the contract for urgent actions in public lighting in the town.

sandra sanchez has indicated that the purpose of this contract is the correction of several deficiencies detected in the street lighting in different locations of the municipality, whose repair is not included among the works to be carried out in the current contract for maintenance and conservation of public lighting. the works have been awarded for 66,295.90 euros (Vat included), with a duration of 2 months.

among the actions to be carried out is the reform of the exterior lighting installation of the hospital Quirón, due to the fact that part of this lighting is public and, therefore, must belong to a municipal lighting installation.

Part of the islas hormigas lighting circuits must be restored and incorporated into the public lighting, the road and two interior green areas, as they are currently fed from supply points outside the town hall. damaged luminaires will

also be replaced to adequately illuminate the area.

in addition, the public lighting located at the roundabout on the cV-905 towards Los Montesinos, belonging to the Municipal district of torrevieja, will be brought into operation; and a new light point will be installed at the pedestrian crossing at the roundabout on calle orihuela towards the ronda ricardo

La Fuente branch, to improve visibility and guarantee the

safety of pedestrians.

three points of light will also be installed on Paseo del acantilado in the cabo cervera urbanisation, to provide lighting for a section with a pedestrian crossing and an emergency exit.

Finally, public lighting is to be provided in calle alborán, located between the residencia de las hermanas carmelitas and the colegio La Purísima, which currently has no lighting along the entire municipal route.

the Mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolon, and the councillor for international residents, Gitte Lund, have attended the raising of the irish flag in the Plaza of the constitution, on the occasion of the celebration of its patron saint, st. Patrick. the ceremony was attended by the parish priest of the immaculate conception, Manuel Martinez rocamora, as well as many irish residents in torrevieja. the flag raising was carried out by the retired county Mayo councillor for 40 years, Frank durcan.

after the raising of the flag the irish anthem was sung and

a group of women performed a typical irish dance, ending the ceremony with the delivery of the typical shamrock to both the mayor of torrevieja and the mayor of international residents.

Saint Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland

st. Patrick’s day or st. Patrick’s day is a christian holiday celebrated annually on 17 March to commemorate the death of st. Patrick of ireland, patron saint of the entire irish island. it is a bank holiday in the republic of ireland and

is celebrated in conjunction with the republic’s national foundation day.

the green three-leaf clover is also one of the symbols of ireland, with magical and legendary connotations in the celtic tradition. in irish culture, according to legend, the green shamrock was used by st. Patrick to illustrate the trinity during the christianisation of the island in the 5th century. From the 18th century onwards it was adopted as a symbol of irish nationalism and has been a distinctive element of the irish people ever since.

Whilst that is sufficient in itself for you not to want a relationship with her, she has continued to cause trouble for you and be spiteful, spreading tales to the rest of the family. Relations with my older sister have never been good, not even when we were young. All I remember was her hitting me a fair bit. There’s seven years between us. She’s been spiteful to me all my life, in a passive aggressive sort of way, that my mum, I used to think never picked up on, so my sister was rarely chastised for her behaviour. When I got older I pointed it out to my mother, who agreed and said her treatment of me had not gone unnoticed, but still she was allowed to get away with it. I have always wondered why my mother did not take my sister aside and read her the riot act. As I’ve got older I realised that my parents were frightened of her, and that my sister’s behaviour was not only reserved for me. Even though the behaviour continued, I concluded it was her problem, and I stopped having much to do with her and only met up at family occasions. “I have seen several Facebook posts from friends asking me to “copy and paste” the post they have just sent. It says you will see more posts from friends. Is this true?“ copying and pasting a message doesn’t “bypass Facebook’s new algorithm”, and doesn’t mean you’ll have more friends appear on your newsfeed. there is no new algorithm. it’s just nonsense. Like many other Facebook hoaxes, the post asks that users

copy and paste the text into their newsfeed to “bypass” or “reset” Facebook algorithms in order to see more friends.

an example: i ignored this post earlier because i didn’t think it worked. it WorKs!! i have a whole new news feed. i’m seeing posts from people i haven’t seen in years. here’s how to bypass the system FB now has in place that limits posts on your news feed. their new algorithm chooses the same few people - about 25 - who will read your posts...

okay here goes…heLLo to regain friends in your news feed and get rid of ads - hold your finger anywhere in this post and click ′copy’. Go to your page where it says, ‘What’s on your mind?’ tap your finger anywhere in the blank field. click paste. this upgrades the system. hello, new and old friends!

Case Esports retains tilte of Valorant Champion in Torrevieja Grand Final

The team, owned by footballer Casemiro, beat Team Queso 3-1 in front of more than 166,000 unique online viewers, making it the most watched final of the competition to date.

Local fans, who filled the Municipal Theatre of Torrevieja, were able to enjoy an outdoor fan zone with free activities.

The Valorant Challengers Spain: Rising Mediamarkt and Intel, the official competition in Spain of the Riot Games game organised by LVP (GRUP MEDIAPRO), has a new spring champion: CASE Esports. The team founded by footballer Casemiro beat Team Queso 3-1 in the grand final held at the Teatro Municipal de Torrevieja. The final was followed online by more than 166,000 cumulative unique users, taking into account LVP’s Twitch channel and those of the costreamings (“Mixwell”, “Blackespañolito” and “Hitbox”), making it the most watched final of the competition to date.

The clash between 1st and 2nd in the regular season ended up going to CASE Esports, who were underdogs. CASE started with a bang, and managed to close the Icebox map in their favour despite their opponents’ comeback attempt (13-5). Far from sinking for this first setback, Team Queso answered with a Haven in which they made it clear why they had opted for that map, signing a 1-1 draw on the scoreboard. The match was decided on the Ascent and the newly released Lotus maps, where CASE Esports players were far superior with stellar performances from the likes of Povilas “Roxie” Krivelis

and Dominykas “MiniBoo” Lukaševičius, with the latter taking the MVP of the match.

CASE Esports retained their title as VALORANT Challengers Spain: Rising Mediamarkt and Intel champions, which they won in the Summer 2022 season, in the final at Ubeat Live (Barcelona).

The final was played at the Municipal Theatre of Torrevieja, where more than 600 fans vibrated with the intense match. In addition, LVP premiered in this event an outdoor fan zone where the public could enjoy from several

Eazylawns

Eazylawns is the leading specialist in the trend for artificial grass that is taking the costas by storm. Forget 80s astro-turf and cheap-looking plastic turf, Eazylawns provides high quality artificial lawns that are so realistic no-one can tell the difference from real grass. Eazylawns was born of necessity; A client was looking for a solution to the common problem in Spain – how to make a lawn green and keep it green. Through the businesses extensive experience in garden maintenance, the team put together a program of watering, scarifying, fertilising, hollow-tining and cutting. This method was extremely costly, time consuming and far from foolproof. Then they considered artificial grass.

Eazylawns sourced several different types and were not impressed. Most of what they saw looked totally unrealistic and the level of service and expertise left more than a little to be desired. This inspired the team to develop its own product.

Eazylawns products are produced in the UK and the business covers the Costa Blanca, although it has undertaken projects as far afield as Valencia and Marbella. The business offers a free full consultation and quotation service and works closely with each customer on the design and installation process. Once agreed, the installation is prompt and efficient, leaving the site clean and tidy. Artificial grass is safe and has a low abrasion index, providing a

hours before the final of free activities of the teams and brands that support the competition, in addition to the now classic meet & greets with the posters of the competition and the players post-match.

“The final in Torrevieja was spectacular. The two best teams of the season fought for the victory in front of a dedicated audience that was able to debut the fan zone concept, which we will replicate in future events. We want to thank Torrevieja, the public, Riot Games, the clubs and our sponsors for this magnificent season,” said Jordi

Soler, CEO of LVP.

This season the competition is sponsored by MediaMarkt, Intel, Domino’s and OMEN, as well as the Torrevieja City Council.

Kelsey Parker posts heartbreaking tribute to late husband Tom as she celebrates her first birthday without himone year after The Wanted star lost his battle with brain cancer

Kelsey Parker posted a heartbreaking tribute to her late husband Tom as she celebrates her first birthday without him.

The 32-year-old posted on Instagram to mark the occasion, nearly a year after Tom’s death on March 30, 2022 following a year-and-a-half long battle with stage four glioblastoma brain cancer.

Kelsey posted a touching image taken shortly before he went on tour with The Wanted for the final time, as she kisses

her wheelchair-bound husband on the cheek.

She wrote on Instagram: ‘A year ago Tom was about to go on tour for the final time (not that we knew that).

‘I was filled with hope but also knew the tour would be gruelling; it was something he needed to do and for him I’m so happy he got to do it one more time.

‘I didn’t think then that I’d be facing my first birthday without him. Another first. We’re almost done with firsts but I’m not sure that’s going to make any difference.

‘This isn’t what we planned or hoped for but its where we are and we’re going with it, enjoying all we can and living the life we have.’

The grieving widow has documented her loss in a documentary with ITV, called Life After Tom.

Kelsey and Tom were together for around 13 years. They announced their engagement in 2016 and married in a romantic ceremony in Surrey in 2018.

Invitation to the businesses of Orihuela Costa

P.I.O.C extends an invitation to all the businesses of Orihuela Costa to their meeting on the 27th of March at the Emerald Isle, 11.30am.

Why?

As we are edging closer to the elections in May and as the only party on Orihuela Costa to fight for your rights, we are heading towards a confrontation with the powers in Orihuela who do not value the contribution that

businesses make towards the wealth of Orihuela.

P.I.O.C., the only party on the coast for the coast, this is a challenge we relish with enthusiasm, with the continued growth of Orihuela Costa, Orihuela is on the road to be defeated, but they do not understand or accept by their own arrogance.

What P.I.O.C achieves today will pay dividends to the businesses tomorrow, we know

about the fear factor on the coast from the Town Hall for speaking up, how English speaking bars are treated differently, but it only takes one person to stand up and openly support us then others will have the confidence to join us. Orihuela has more to fear, more to lose.

We welcome all business Owners to a P.I.O..C. presentation on 27th March 11.30am at The Emerald Isle La Florida.

Stress Free in the Sun

Living as an expat in Spain may seem like a dream come true, but the reality is that it can be a stressful experience. Many expats experience stress and anxiety due to the challenges of living in a foreign country, adapting to a new culture, and dealing with language barriers. This can be particularly true when living in a country like Spain, where the pace of life can be slower and more relaxed than what some expats are used to.

At the same time, living in Spain does offer many benefits that can help expats manage their stress levels. For example, the sunny weather and relaxed lifestyle can be very therapeutic. There are also many opportunities to connect with other expats, which can provide a sense of community and support.

In this article, we will explore some of the ways that expats in Spain can manage stress and anxiety and enjoy their new lives to the fullest.

1. Learn the Language

One of the biggest challenges that expats face when moving to Spain is the language barrier. Learning Spanish can be a daunting task, but it is essential for fully integrating into Spanish life. Taking Spanish classes or hiring a tutor can help expats become

more confident in their ability to communicate with locals, which can reduce feelings of anxiety and isolation.

2. Find a Support Network

Feeling connected to others is crucial when dealing with stress and anxiety. Expats in Spain can find support by joining local expat groups or attending events and activities designed for expats. These groups provide a sense of community and a chance to connect with others who are going through similar experiences.

3. Stay Active

Physical activity is an excellent way to reduce stress and anxiety. Spain offers many opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and water sports. Staying active can help expats feel more energized, improve their mood, and enhance their overall wellbeing.

4. Embrace the Culture

Adapting to a new culture can be challenging, but it is also an opportunity to learn and grow. Expats in Spain can reduce stress and anxiety by embracing the local culture and customs. This can include trying local cuisine, attending cultural events, and learning about Spanish history and traditions.

5. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a practice that involves being present in the moment and focusing on one’s thoughts and feelings without judgment. This practice can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve overall well-being. Expats in Spain can practice mindfulness by taking up yoga or meditation, or simply taking time to relax and enjoy the beauty of their surroundings.

6. Seek Professional Help

If stress and anxiety become overwhelming, seeking professional help is essential. Expats in Spain can find English-speaking therapists or psychologists who can provide support and guidance. It is essential to address mental health issues early to prevent them from becoming more severe.

In conclusion, while living as an expat in Spain can be stressful, it is also an opportunity to embrace a new way of life and experience a different culture. By learning the language, finding a support network, staying active, embracing the culture, practicing mindfulness, and seeking professional help when needed, expats in Spain can manage their stress and anxiety and enjoy their new lives to the fullest.

long-awaited Gibraltar runway tunnel to open within weeks

It has taken around 15 years to build, but at last drivers will no longer have to stop and wait while planes land and take off

The tunnel beneath the airport

runway in Gibraltar should be open within a few weeks, chief minister Fabian Picardo said in response to a question raised in parliament on Wednesday.

This will be welcome news for drivers, because it will mean that traffic no longer has to cross the runway and will not be held up when planes land or take off.

By the time the 350-metre tunnel, which will be known as the Eastside Tunnel, is open, the project will have taken nearly 15 years to complete

since the initial contract was awarded in 2008.

The chief minister said it would be open before the next meeting of the Gibraltar parliament takes place.

The project has been plagued with setbacks and delays and several completion dates have been indicated over the years but have come and

gone.

Gibraltar is one of the few places in the world where traffic and pedestrians have to cross an airport runway to gain access or to exit, but as the longawaited tunnel will be for traffic only when it opens, those on foot and cyclists will still be able to enjoy this unusual experience.

The importance of scrapping your vehicle legally

Having worked in the scrap business on the Costa Blanca for over a decade, the team at Bradley Breakers could tell us all a horror story or two about people who thought they had scrapped their old car only to find that the car was still registered, and even in some instanes driving around accumulating fines, many months later.

There are car owners on the Costa Blanca who have faced large fines after the vehicle they thought they’d dealt with was still driving around. Unfortunately, as long as your name remains on the document of ownership you are legally responsible for that vehicle.

Here in Spain the system of scrapping a vehicle is much different from anything you are likely to be used to Ireland or the UK. If you also have the added complication of a language barrier it is even more imperative that, when considering disposing of a vehicle, you use a company in which you have complete trust.

One such company is Bradley Breakers. They are experts in the field and they can make the whole process simple and uncomplicated. Simply make the call, they will make you a cash offer for your vehicle

and if accepted they will collect the vehicle on a tow truck from your home ensuring the minimum of disruption and fuss for you.

They will then leave you with the necessary legal documentation, indicating that they have taken ownership of your old vehicle and then, once the vehicle has been officially ‘scrapped’, you will be issued with the official DGT Certificate (Baja).

Do be aware that, if this is something that you are currently considering, you need to ensure that your vehicle is scrapped by 31 December to avoid any further SUMA bills.

Bradley Breakers said, “We can’t overemphasise the importance of doing the ‘baja’ of a vehicle properly in Spain. It saves so much hassle and heartache further along the line doing it in the correct way with a trustworthy company.”

Bradley Breakers, which employs

over 40 people, now have an impressive new scrapyard consisting of a 20,000 square metre site on which they house a 3,000 sqm warehouse in which they store thousands of used parts which they have removed from cars. All parts are recorded on a computer stock system and stacked on racking within the warehouse. You can even buy parts online. So, if you are looking for a component for your car, before you buy new, you could save time and money by going directly to Bradley Breakers.

Torrevieja U3As newest group

A recently formed group named ‘Walk and Talk’ is making great strides in offering a sociable gathering for members to meet up on a monthly basis for an informal chat and easy exercise.

The members take part in a leisurely stroll along picturesque and easily accessible areas around Torrevieja and its neighbouring areas. The strolls vary in length but are not too strenuous, so anybody with mobility problems can usually still take part.

The walks are normally held on

Saturdays, starting about mid morning and include a comfort break along the way before concluding in time for lunch.

The last meeting took place at Mil Palmeras on 11the March where 27 members enjoyed the sunshine and a well earned cuppa.

Fuller details of this particular groups activities, as well as all the other activities available to the U3A members can be found on the Torrevieja U3A Facebook page or the associations website torreviejau3a.org.

Balaton Bottoms all clean

With the start of the SAMM race season looming, members of the Balaton boat share group worked hard to get their three 6 meter Sailfish 18 boats race ready. The project was led by group chairman Julian, helped by various members, Bob, Jurgen, Paddy, David, Jez, Willie and Rona, over the course of a week.

Starting with Sirocco, they sailed her to Los Urutias marina to be worked on.

First task being to lift her from the water and remove the weed and barnacle growth from the bottom of the hull. This is excessive in the Mar Menor, probably due to the higher water temperature, and greatly reduces the hulls efficiency and boat speed.

The easiest way to remove it is by a hot water jet wash as soon as the boat is lifted before the encrustations dry out

then, after being allowed to dry, a quick rub down and a fresh coat of anti-foul paint can be applied.

The upper hull and deck were then lightly sanded and repainted with epoxy marine paint and new decals applied. Finally a check was made off all the rigging and ropes before she was returned to the water.

She was followed by similar work on

both Vision before the first race day and Ginetta soon afterwards. They should now all sail well and give the smaller dinghies a run for their money.

Abbey Angling

On Tuesday the 14th March we small the short journeÿ to Murcia town centre to fish the highly unpredictable Rio Segura. Nine anglers turned out on what was a very warm almost summers day with brilliant sunshine and almost no breeze.

Winner on the day from peg 7 was a very smiley Trevor Howard. Trevor fished braed , corn or maggots on the hook to catch eight carp for a very exacting 8kg.

In second place was Barry Smith from end peg nine who only caught 3 carp and a few bleak on the maggot using a cage feeder for 5.50kg.

In third place was Graham Patterson from peg 5 who used similar tactics for 4.22kg.

All 3 of these anglers were in the top section with the first section after the bridge fishing particularily tough, although everyne caught.

Winner of this section was Bob Robinson on peg 1 with 2.98kg and second was Alan Priest with a single carp for 1.35kg.

Rods N Reels.

The following day we returned to what has now become our spiritual home , El Bosquet at Crevillente.

The weather was once again set fair, which was a good job as half way through the match I had to

take to the water to retrieve a lost top 3 section of my pole.

Fifteen anglers took part and we fished on three sections of 5 spread across pegs 1 to 7, 17 to 24 and 36 to 40.

Winner on the day was the Welsh Wizard, Doug Hornblow, drawn on peg 17 he caught carp on both the pole and feeder for 18.70kg but also lost a lot of big fish.

In second place was the leicester playboy, Steve Higgins. Drawn on the hot peg 1 he made no mistake to catch carp and mullet on the pole with maggots for 17.48kg.

In third place was Max on the adjacent peg B1 with a very respectable 15.72kg.

The other section was won by Alan Preist from peg 38, who used the method feeeder to good effect for 11.20kg.

Match fishing is all about small margins and just a word of advice to all anglers, always check your net when weighing in, as sometimes fish get stuck in the net and they are overlooked, which at times can be very costly.

Although we do have over 50 members in our clubs we are always on the lookout for new members and everyone is welcome. For further details please visit our website www.abbeyangling.es
