New data from innovative Spanish property portal Kyero.com has revealed that Playa Del Ingles has knocked Torrevieja off the top spot of trending location searches for the first time ever.

F

igures from the past month show that more buyers are searching for properties in the stunning Gran Canaria location than in the traditional favourite within Alicante province. Richard Speigal, Head of Research at Kyero.com, told The Costa Blanca People. “Torrevieja is such a renowned hotspot and so popular with buyers of overseas property that we were surprised to see it had lost its crown to Playa Del Ingles. monthly search data has shown Playa Del Ingles to be the favourite.” Buyers are searching for properties with

with either sea views or a pool. However, those still opting for Torrevieja are on something of a tighter budget, with the Kyero.com figures revealing an average search price of €116,000. That’s enough for a two to threebedroom apartment with sea views, or even a three-bedroom villa with pool for those happy to live on the outskirts of town. So, has Playa Del Ingles knocked Torrevieja off the top spot for good? Unlikely, believes Kyero.com’s Richard Speigal. “Torrevieja has all the elements that make up the perfect Spanish holiday home destination,” he explains. “Playa Del Ingles does too, with both destinations boasting stunning coastline, fantastic food, a welcoming community and great weather. However, Torrevieja has the added advantage that buyers can get more for their money. Ultimately I believe that’s what will push Torrevieja back to the top spot before long.”

Kid goat rescued We are used to hearing of abandoned dogs and cats but the local police recently had to deal with a very different orphan. A kid goat was found on the 11th January in La Laguna of La Mata. The little goat was found by a walker in an area alongside the cemetery and the park Lo Albentosa. The baby goat had only recently been born and still had its umbilical cord attached when found. As yet, its owner and mother have not been located and there are no reports of anyone looking for a lost animal. The walker reported the find to the local police who referred it to the organisation ‘protección animal de Torrevieja’. One of the volunteers of the group took the animal home and offered to look after it temporarily until its owner and mother could be found.

Time is running out though. The longer the kid is away from its mother and the less likely it will be thatthe mother goat will accept it when found. The little goat is turning out to be a much-loved attraction. It’s adoptive mother found herself on a mercy mission looking for goat’s milk around the supermarkets. It’s not the first time there has been an abandoned animal such as this. There are still flocks of sheep and goats in the area of La Hoya and La Mata. Sometimes the shepherd isn’t aware that an animal has given birth if the baby doesn’t immediately follow its mother. We hope that the young stray is claimed soon. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Shopping centre NEWS: thieves caught Alarms activated in Torrevieja

A group of thieves who have been working in the commercial centres of Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja and Dolores have been caught. Their criminal activities centred around card theft and fraud and it is estimated that through their crimes they have collected €8,300. The three detained include two Spanish women of 23 and 30 years old and a Spanish man of 40. They are all residents of Alicante. The Guardia Civil of

would then offer to help the person trying to use it. In this way they would see the pin number which they would then use once they had retrieved the card from the wallet. One member of the group would engage the target in conversation, the second would steal their wallet whilst the third would remain on the look out for the presence of police. The gang had been recorded on a number of occasions on CCTV cameras

The security alarm firm Securitas Direct has published data about the towns and provinces in Spain with the highest number of incidents of alarm activation. According to their findings, Torrevieja has the second to highest number of recorded activations only being beaten by Huelva. The data was collected last year and sees Torrevieja coming out in front of Seville and Marbella. The security firm was alerted due to the presence of a robber or an intruder with the motive of theft. In Huelva, Securitas registered 4.35% of alarms being activated which is four times more than that in Segovia. The exact percentage of incidents for Torrevieja has not been published. The towns that can boast the least security alerts include Granada, Córdoba, Bilbao, Alcalá de Nehares, Valencia and Vigo.

The day of the pig in La Mata It’s a favourite annual event for many people living around Torrevieja and La Mata. The ‘International Day of the Pig’ or ‘Dia Internacional del Cerdo’ marks the traditional process of killing a pig in order to stock up on meat for the winter. This year it will be held on Sunday 22nd January in the Plaza de EncarnacionPuchol in La Mata. This is the

plaza opposite the main church. The event starts at 12pm and you would be wise not to be too late as it is free. The people of La Mata provide the food which includes around 120 kilos of bread, 70 litres of La Mata wine, eight barrels of beer and 200 kilos of celery and beans. Of course, most important is the pork which can amount to some 600kg. The day has been celebrated for the past 17 years in La Mata and is part of the feast of San Antonio Abad, San Anton being the patron saint of animals. It is perhaps a little strange that such a huge

Raffles of ham follow in order to help raise money for the following year’s event. There is also some organised entertainment with dancers performing at 1pm. It’s one of the more unusual and generous events in the region but be prepared not to eat any time soon. Suzanne O’Connell

Over the Christmas period Torrevieja local businesses were handing out raffle tickets to people buying goods in local shops. The raffle was drawn on the 14th January and Fina Pina García won gifts estimated to be valued at €7,000. She had received her ticket when buying goods from Chantal Optics. Runner up, Teresa Terrés Moreno, received prizes worth €1,200 and had received her ticket when purchasing from Betún Moda y Zapatos. Third prize winner was Antonio Vidal Pérez who won prizes valued at €1,200 following a purchase at the Forestbike bicycle store.

Torrevieja is represented in Oslo’s tourism fair The number of Norwegians on the padrón in Torrevieja has grown. Since the 1960s an increasing number of people from Norway have visited Torrevieja or made it their home. For the first time, representatives from Torrevieja took part in the Reieliv Fair in Oslo, the capital of Norway, over the weekend of the 14th and 15th January. Continued on page 5

BITE SIZE Torrevieja missing from promotional video NEWS: Continued from page 4 Councillor Fanny Serrano, was accompanied by a representative from the tourist department. They had their own spot within the Valencian Region stand at the exhibition. During the fair discussions were also held between representatives from Torrevieja and Cartagena to look at ways of linking the two tourist destination.

Petition to withdraw honours More than 2,500 people have signed a petition circulated in Change.org to request that Torrevieja town hall remove the title of ‘hijo predilicto’ or favourite son of the city, from Federico Trillo which was awarded the title on 21st July 2005. Trillo has recently been named as responsible for the crash of the Yak-42 in which 62 Spanish military personnel were killed. At the time of the crash, Trillo was the defence minister and, until recently, he was also Spain’s ambassador to the UK. It is claimed that his removal as Spanish ambassador is not connected to the recent report giving him responsibility for the 2003 military air crash. The Yak-42 was carrying 62 soldiers back from Afghanistan when it crashed into a mountainside in Turkey. The pilots at the time had been 22 hours in the air and there were also doubts about the safety of the aircraft. Further scandal surrounding the crash included the wrong identification of bodies and the misappropriation of funds between subcontractors. The plane was not even insured properly. The petition notes that the only people originally in favour of handing out this title to him were members of the PP and that the awarding of such a title was therefore a political act and not one born out of consensus. Now with the blemishes to his name the maintenance of the title is even more controversial.

Suggestions to improve access in Torrevieja Councillor Javier Manzanares is looking for suggestions as to how access for disabled people might be improved in Torrevieja. The Torrevieja Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (Plan de Movilidad Urbana Sostenible de Torrevieja) is currently being drafted out and proposals are welcome. Consideration is already being given to how traffic is organised, the creation of safer footpaths and cycle lanes and ways in which footpaths and pavements can be made easier for disabled people to negotiate. The plan was originally started by the PP during their term of office and the Transport Department at the town hall is now keen to take it to the next stage of presenting it to Valencia for approval. Continued on page 6

We’ve been hearing about the town hall’s attempts to get Torrevieja recognised as an all-year round place to visit. However, a latest promotional video neglects to mention the town at all. ‘Costa Blanca Es Más’ Is the latest attempt to raise the profile of the Costa Blanca region and draw attention to the other tourist attractions there are here. However, it mentions neither Torrevieja nor Elche during its five minutes of

into colour images of the Costa Blanca as it is now. Calpe and the Rock of Ifach are featured at the beginning of the video. There are also scenes from the Moors and Christians celebrations of Alcoy, the castles of La Foia and Villena, Altea La Vila, Benidorm and pictures of pine forests and cherry blossoms. Alicante’s Santa Bárbara castle receives a mention but Torrevieja is strangely absent. There is no mention of Torrevieja, its

coverage. It is being launched as a feature of the overall branding of the region. Councillor for tourism in Torrevieja, Fanny Serrano, raised the issue when attending the presentation of the video on Wednesday 11th January. The omission is particularly surprising given that the ex-mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, is the Vice President of the Provincial Council in Alicante and responsible for the Tourism Board. The video lasts for five minutes and four of those minutes refer to the history of the Costa Blanca over the last fifty years. Images in black and white explain the birth of the brand before leading

beaches, coves or any other attraction. Neither is there any mention of Elche’s palm trees or mystery plays and Orihuela only gets a brief mention. The government in Alicante recognise the error but assure those concerned that this is only some of the material that is being released as part of the campaign and that there will be more extensive coverage of the missing towns in another video. You can see the video for yourself on Youttubehttps://www.youtube.com/wat ch?v=dVHPlrfmvWY Suzanne O’Connell

All good on Whatsapp Instant message service Whatsapp broke its own record on New Year's Eve with over 63 billion texts, of which 7.9 billion contained photos and 2.3 billion had videos attached, according to researchers at ProAndroid.com. Whatsapp is one of the preferred media in Spain for sending festive greetings, on Christmas Eve night, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and the Three Kings, or Twelfth Night. In fact, its use in Spain is huge yearround, as shown by the recent successful campaign for a paella emoji to be added to the catalogue. Despite its massive global use concentrated into a 12-hour period worldwide, Whatsapp managed to avoid jamming up and grinding to a halt the way it did in the last few minutes of 2015, thanks to its having reconfigured its services. A year ago, IP addresses of Whatsapp users were all stored in servers located in Virginia, USA, but since

Facebook bought out the network, IPstoring servers are now distributed around the globe. This means if a user in Spain sends a New Year's goodwill message, it does not travel to Virginia first and then return to the recipient's phone across the pond, but is processed by a server in Europe. Whatsapp’s recent announcement that it will no longer be available for use in models of mobile phones older than five years, or even in newer models for certain makes – has sparked criticism among mobile users who say this is purely a stealthy marketing tactic to make them spend money on new phones. Warning messages came up throughout 2016 on all BlackBerry phones including the brand-new and very expensive BlackBerry Passport, Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Windows Phone 7.1, Android 2.1 and Android 2.2, and iPhone 2, saying from 31st December, WhatsApp would no longer function.

FATHER CONVICTED AFTER BATHING BABY IN BOILING WATER A 25-year-old man from Jaén is facing 12 years in jail for bathing his baby in boiling water, causing him permanent scarring. The court heard that in August 2012, the baby's parents went to visit the man’s sister for the afternoon and, at one point the the two women went out to buy food for the evening meal. Once alone in the house, the father, identified only by his initials of M.C.M, decided to bath his five-and-a-halfmonth-old son. However, he used extremely hot, near-boiling water, pouring it repeatedly over the infant’s body. Even though the baby started crying immediately, his father ‘held him by the head’ to keep him still and carried on. The infant continued crying even after the accused took him out of the water and while he was being dried roughly with a

towel, which pulled his skin off. It was at that moment that the women returned to the house, and they took the baby straight to hospital. He was admitted to intensive care and then transferred to the burns unit at Sevilla's Virgen del Rocío Hospital. It took nearly 10 months to heal the child’s wounds, and he needed several skin-graft operations to repair the damage inflicted. The prosecution has recommended that the accused pay 180,000 euros in compensation, which is to be held in trust for his son – who is now nearly five years old – and that he be banned from approaching his son for the next 15 years. The accused has already lost custody of the little boy and it also appears the child’s parents have now separated and are no longer a couple.

Murcia man awakes from coma after doorman assault A 28-year-old man who was left in a coma after an attack by a nightclub bouncer has woken up, his family has announced, although his condition remains ‘serious but stable’. It is alleged that Andrés Martínez became embroiled in a heated discussion with Hristo I., who remains in custody pending trial, outside a club in the city of Murcia – but once the argument was over and Andrés was about to walk away, Hristo punched him hard in the front of the head. Andrés collapsed unconscious and was already in a coma before he was admitted to intensive care at the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia. His family feared the worst, but after three weeks and two days in a coma, Andrés has now woken up, meaning he has a far greater chance of survival. No news has been released yet as to whether he will suffer any permanent or long-term after-effects, although it is likely to take several days before this can be judged with any degree of accuracy. Hristo I., originally from Bulgaria, has been charged with attempted murder, since it was considered ‘evident’ from CCTV footage that he pulled the punch when Andrés was not expecting it, giving him no chance to defend himself. The accused denies the attack was premeditated, and said he did not realise how serious it was nor how hard he had actually hit the victim.

Investigation into La Siesta park The prosecutor has asked the courts to investigate the PP’s handling of the ordering of materials for La Siesta Park. A denuncia has been presented by the local town hall and the chief prosecutor of Alicante has charged the courts in Torrevieja with investigating the complaints. It is claimed that the supply of construction materials worth €184,000 was ordered by nothing more than word of mouth and a phone call and without the necessary invoices. The completion of the park was one of the last projects of the PP government and was part of an employment initiative. After the handover between the two governments, work at the park was frozen due to concerns about the way in which the contract and arrangements for it had been handled. Administrative irregularities meant that the legal framework for the supply of materials did not seem to be in place. The bills currently remain unpaid and the companies involved are using litigation to reclaim the cost of the materials they supplied. Suzanne O’Connell

Overstretched fire service Six firemen had five callouts in just two hours. The fire station in Torrevieja was bombarded on 12th January with calls when there were only six men available to take them. One of these, because of his age, is employed in an administrative capacity and although not on active duty was required to attend too. Fortunately none of the incidents were too serious and there were no injuries. The first was to rescue a pet in La Zenia and coincided with a fire in calle San Policarpo to a roast chicken shop where there was some light damage. At the same time another alert was received from Calle Pedro Lorca due to a fire in a basement and a little time after there was a call to a fire in an oil recycling container in La Torreta Florida. For years the fire service has warned that they are on the point of collapse, particularly in the summer,

in spite of assistance from the services of Orihuela and the substation of Almoradí. The station covers an area from Guardamar del Segura until Pilar de la Horadada, including all of Orihuela Costa with more than 160,000 inhabitants on the official census. This figure does not take into consideration the number of people who live here for just a portion of the year, are tourists or short stay visitors. The staffing and capacity of the fire station in Torrevieja is of concern. It was previously a substation and its change in status has not resulted in any more staff on duty. Most of the shifts are covered by six firemen when there is supposed to be a minimum number of eight. The limited human resources available mean that the fire engines cannot be used to their full capacity. Suzanne O’Connell

Benidorm brothel raided in sex-slavery racket bust A nationwide human-trafficking network has been disbanded and its victims released from conditions of slavery in brothels in both Benidorm and Bilbao. Seven Nigerian women were forced to work as prostitutes for more than 14 hours a day, seven days a week, for no pay. All their earnings went to their captors, who had confiscated their passports and threatened them with violence if they attempted to leave the premises or raise the alarm. National Police raided five properties, seizing 20,000 euros in cash and accounting paperwork, receipts for international fund transfers, notes and maps showing main migrant routes they used for trafficking victims, plus computer equipment and mobile phones which are now being analysed by experts. The racket was run by three Nigerian women, who were arrested along with six others. Of the nine arrests, three were made in Benidorm. Their victims have been released and will be given assistance and support.

Congested roads in Torrevieja They might not be congested in comparison to UK standards, but the streets of Torrevieja are busy. The data released suggests that there are 197,000 journeys made in vehicles in Torrevieja every day. Most of these are private vehicles making short trips within the town (54%). Only 4% are of made by people passing through the area. Of the trips made 62% of cars are only occupied by the driver and only 10% of people in Torrevieja use the bus. Of the vehicles on the roads 78% are cars, 4% buses, 6% heavy vehicles, 3% motorbikes and 9% commercial vehicles. Only 1% are bicycles, a number that might seem particularly low and adds to the congestion. The figures are being used to put together a plan to improve the circulation of traffic in the town.

Accident black spots La avenida de las Cortes Valencianas is the route on which most accidents are registered.Twenty-five people have received light injuries, three serious and there has been one death in a period of four years on this stretch of road. Another dangerous route is identified as la avenida de Alfred Nobel-Carretera del Torrejón. This is where the greatest number of incidents of speeding have been clocked. It is believed that 30% of people travelling on this route exceed the speed limit. Thecalles María Parodi and La Loma are also risky areas to walk or drive. A total of 12% of drivers and their passengers do not use seat belts. In the town itself there is an annual average of 1,334 accidents with274 casualties. Twenty-five percent of these are as a result of breaking the law in some form, a figure

that is high in comparison to other cities.

Illegal parking Eight percent of the vehicles which circulate every day park illegally if they cannot find a free space. Forty-four percent use public car parks where they must pay and the other 25% prefer to park their car on the streets and pay nothing. The busiest times are between 10am and 11am on roads entering the town and the worst traffic jams in the town occur at 1pm. None of the main stretches of road have a volume lower than 23,000 vehicles a day. Some of the busiest include the CV90 with 29,800 vehicles a day at various points, particularly around Carrefour. The N332 from north to south, reaches at some points 30,000 a day and the CV-95 has an average of 23,300, rising to 27,600

around Los Balcones and at the access to Torrevieja hospital. The busiest roundabout is that of Ricardo Lafuente which reaches up to 29,900 vehicles and the avenida de Rosa Mazón.

Better buses needed Although these figures were calculated in 2010, it is believed that they have changed little since. They are perhaps proof of the need for a better bus service. With so many short trips within the town with one person in a car there would be great benefits if they could be persuaded to use the local bus service instead. The main reason given for many people not doing so is the infrequency and unreliability of the service and the lack of convenient routes. Suzanne O’Connell

Dubbing ban on cartoons

The PSOE political party has demanded an end to cartoon dubbing in Spain to help kids learn more foreign languages. The centre-left party has asked the government to put pressure

CostaBlancaPeople 17th - 23rd January 2017

on state TV channel RTVE to stop dubbing foreign-made children’s programmes into Spanish. Cartoons should be aired in their original language to improve language skills, according to the PSOE. Politicians have argued in Congress that making the change and adding Spanish subtitles instead would help children to learn additional languages much more easily. A spokesperson said it would have particular impact in Spain, as children here watch more hours of TV than the European average.

Tax return for local towns The Spanish taxman, the Hacienda, is to return a 1.5 million euro “mistake” to Vega Baja Town Halls. The towns of Rojales, San Fulgencio, Algorfa and Torrevieja among those to benefit. The Ministry of the Treasury will have to dig deep to correct an error in its calculations when it was ordered to return what it had collected from the socalled “healthcare cent” on fuel, which was declared illegal by the EU. The list of municipalities it has to pay back includes 10 in the Vega Baja. Rojales, with €521,746 will get the most, followed by San Fulgencio with €480,705, and Algorfa with €227,914. Completing the list are Torrevieja (€92,069), Orihuela (€88,795), Los Montesinos (€62,458), Guardamar (€41,917), Daya Vieja (€9,337), Formentera del Segura (€7,942) and Daya Nueva (€6,999), between them making a total of €1.5 million that they were probably not counting on. The Treasury has said it will pay but only when it can be factored into the 2017 budget, which has not been approved yet.

HELP Vega Baja provides additional hospital service ■ SUZANNE O’CONNELL suzanne@costablancapeople.com

HELP Vega Baja has had a team of hospital visitors in Vega Baja hospital for many years. Volunteers also visit patients in Torrevieja hospital on request. Now, they are increasing the range of this service to include Quirónsalud Hospital in Torrevieja. ‘We are very aware that the patient experience of British nationals in a Spanish hospital can be very different from what they are use to in the UK,’ explains President, Michele Masson. ‘Our aim is to be a listening ear to patients and their relatives and to support them with non-medical advice.’ The volunteers attending Vega Baja hospital attend the hospital three days each week and visit English speaking patients. The intention is to open up a similar service in Quirónsalud and HELP Vega Baja are now looking for the volunteers to enable this to take place. ‘Our charity has been collaborating with Quiónsalud on different issues for some time,’ says Michele. ‘During discussions we were surprised to discover the high percentage of British patients on the hospital’s international ward, some residents and others taken ill during a holiday stay. We put

forward a proposal which outlined details of a regular visiting team and we are absolutely delighted this has been accepted by the management team at the hospital.’ Now they need the volunteers to set

the new service in motion. They are keen to hear from anyone who thinks they might be able to help out. Volunteers will visit on a rota basis to fit in with their own schedules and availability. If you are interested in finding out more you can contact Michele Masson, President at president@helpvegabaja.com or contact the HELP San Miguel Centre on 966723733. HELP Vega Baja would also like to thank Samantha Biddles (Relaciones externas internacionales) at the hospital for her help in establishing this new service.

Paternity leave doubles Paternity leave has now officially doubled throughout Spain from two weeks to four – a move many Dads say is insufficient, but which has led to some firms extending even further. One of these is the supermarket chain Consum, which has decided to offer six weeks’ paternity leave instead of the four given by the government. Until 2009, only mums were entitled to State-funded time off for the birth of a baby or adoption of a child, but since paternity leave was first granted in that year, an estimated quarter of a million fathers have taken advantage of it annually. The law increasing paternity leave to four weeks was in fact passed on 1st January 1, 2011, but has taken six years to come into effect. Some take their leave after the mothers’ maternity leave ends to allow her to go back to work, or during maternity leave to ease the pressure on the new Mum and spend quality time with their babies. Single fathers and all-male couples, however, say this is nowhere near enough because it leaves them at a disadvantage compared with male-female couples, where the woman’s maternity leave is much longer and typically leads to her being able to take up to six months off

work. In the first nine months of 2016, the State paid €1.15 billion in maternity pay, of whom 206,037 beneficiaries were mums and 4,309 were dads who had the opportunity to take over some of the woman's maternity leave. At the same time, €154 million was paid in paternity leave for 184,093 fathers. A campaign group, the Association for Equal and NonTransferable Birth and Adoption Leave (PPiiNA) says the fourweek paternity period is not enough and is ‘poorly designed’, as fathers only get a quarter of mothers’ four months of leave – an ‘unacceptable inequality of rights’, the group complains. One of the spokeswomen, María Pazos, recalled that Parliament agreed in October to increase paternity leave to 16 weeks to equal that of the mothers.

The PPiiNA is backed by the Union of Family Associations (UNAF), which says shorter paternity leave means the bulk of childcare continues to fall to the mother, leading to her being ‘penalised in the job market’. UNAF wants the government to go one step further and provide 'parental leave', allowing the mother and father to take equal amounts of time off on separate occasions and an equal period in which they coincide to cover 'quality family time' and also to help share child-rearing and breadwinning. “Work-family balance policies are a State issue which directly affect everyone's wellbeing – caring for the elderly, the sick or disabled, and children, as well as affecting the birth rate, employee productivity and the economy of the country,” UNAF stresses.

Climber rescued after fall in the Sierra de Redován A 34 year old man from San Pedro del Pinatar has been rescued after he fell from a height of 15 metres whilst hiking in a local natural park. The accident happened early last Saturday afternoon

in an area of the Sierra de Redován known as El Rut. The response team was made up of two Redován Local Police patrols, a rescue team from the Fire Brigade with the Provincial Council helicopter, a Guardia Civil patrol and an ambulance. The climber, who was still conscious, was taken to Vega Baja Hospital with injuries to his leg and hip. Redován Local Police asked people to be very careful when climbing and walking there. Hikers are being advised to use the prepared areas and paths and to go in daylight hours, taking extra care in steeper areas. Those walking alone are told to give family members their route and estimated timescale, so the alarm can be raised if they to get into difficulty.

Paseo de la Libertad to be redeveloped The area Paseo de la Libertad, where the hippy market is located, is due for refurbishment according to a proposal in the 2017 budget for Torrevieja. It is proposed to remove the bushes around the area and relocate the wooden craft shops. The proposed work would also coincide with attempts to prevent flooding in the area. The total area of the Paseo de la Libertad, is in need of attention having been built in the 70s and now grappling with problems with pavements, lighting and lack of accessibility. The trees and plants bordering the paseo are causing difficulties as their roots are bringing up the pavements. It is proposed that the hippy market might be relocated under the dique de Levante. This move would need to be agreed by the Valencian community government. There are concerns that moving the market from where it is currently will make the area generally

more exposed. The refurbishments would stretch from the Plaza Capdepont which is close to the office for international residents, to the Hombre del Mar and the beginning of the dique de Levante. Changes to this area have previously been neglected due to grander plans for the port area being proposed. The area is currently an on going drain on resources as minor repairs are constantly needing to be made. The town’s shield, which was cast in the pavement at the beginning of the paseo, had to be removed because of its bad state of repair and the number of falls it was causing. Although these are the plans, it is important to note that they have not yet been approved and will need the support of the additional parties, Sueña and Ciudadanos, for them to take place. Mortgage clause update Many of our readers will be aware of the issue surrounding mortgages in Spain which were found to include a clause ruled abusive by the European Court of Justice. The ruling, which extended to three banks originally, was backed up by Spain’s Supreme Court and now many more homeowners could be eligible for a refund of fees. The issue surrounds a clause (‘clausula suelo’ or ‘floor clause’) which has now been deemed abusive and borrowers are set to receive refunds where applicable. The amount due to borrowers depends on their own mortgage terms and it is advisable to seek the advice of an expert to help you find out if a refund is due to you, and how to go about claiming it. Consumer affairs groups Adicae and OCU advise approaching the bank’s claims department before taking the matter directly to court.

What do you need to know? Are you eligible? If you are currently paying off a private mortgage, or paid off your mortgage up to four years ago, you could be eligible. However, as many as six Spanish banks (Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank, Bankia, Sabadell and Ibercaja) already changed clauses in their clients’ mortgages to prevent further claims so when you gather your paperwork to check if you are eligible for a refund, be sure to include any recent correspondence from your bank with regard to your mortgage terms.

How much? It very much depends on your mortgage amount and terms, but set up fees typically represent between 2.5 and 3% of the loan amount. In many

cases, a portion of the fee can be claimed back and not the full amount.

What do you need? To find out if you are eligible, you will need: The Escritura (deeds) of your mortgage, the invoice from the notary, the land registry invoice, the stamp duty (ADJ) tax form (form 600) and any recent correspondence from your bank with regard to mortgage terms.

Who can help? We consulted the experts at Pellicer & Heredia and at Spanish Solutions, both firms speak English and will review your mortgage documentation for free. If you are entitled to a refund, they will process this for you for an agreed fee. Contact sales@spanishsolutions.net (Amanda Thomas, Spanish Solutions) or robert.insurance@pellicerheredia.com (Robert Kirkhope, Pellicer & Heredia). Robert from Pellicer & Heredia told us, “Since the 23rd of December I have dealt with many enquiries from concerned UK and Irish citizens about this situation. Already I have several clients who will be due a sizeable refund. I am not surprised that there is a lot of speculation in the community about the potential of the European Court ruling. I would advise everyone who has a Spanish mortgage to find out all the facts. Informed decisions are always very wise in Spain.” And Amanda from Spanish Solutions had the following advice, “If you want to be successful in your claim against the banks, you need a lawyer specialized and experienced in banking and finance law. Spanish Solutions have been undertaking this in various instances for many years. Last year we won millions on behalf of now satisfied clients who were unfairly overcharged in the boom times.”

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE An ordinary week for the Euro kept it in the middle of the bunch as investors' attention was focused elsewhere. The economic data from Euroland were broadly positive, with confidence and output measures mostly exceeding forecast. Unemployment in the Eurozone as a whole was unchanged at 9.8% while in Greece it remained well into double figures at 23.1%. The real headlines were being made in Britain and the States. Britain's Prime Minster said people who thought the country could keep "bits of EU membership" were missing the point that it "would be leaving". Germany's Prime Minister said much the same thing the following day. America's President-elect held an anarchic press conference, during which no mention was made of the stimulus measures that investors had been banking on. Consequently the Euro added a third of a US cent and strengthened by two and a half

cents against Sterling. The highlight - or at any rate the focus - of the Dollar's week was Donald Trump's press conference on Wednesday, his first and only as President-elect. For supporters of the Dollar it was a sobering affair, revolving mainly around Mr Trump's alleged business and leisure interests. There was no mention of the stimulative tax and spending measures upon which they had been pinning their hopes. The Dollar lost a third of a cent to the Euro. It gained two and a quarter cents against the pound, which took three palpable hits from two Prime Ministers. Last Sunday Theresa May said Britain cannot keep "bits" of the EU (such as the single market) when it leaves. The following day Germany's Angela Merkel said much the same thing. Then on Thursday Sterling fell again when Downing Street announced that Ms May will be making a speech about Brexit on Tuesday.

State pensions rise, but only just The Spanish government has agreed to increase retirement pensions by 0.25 percent - the legal minimum – and the minimum wage by 8 percent from its current €655.20 a month for a full-time, 40hour-a-week job to €707.70 a month. President Mariano Rajoy, of the ruling right-wing PP party, said that the minimum wage hike is ‘the greatest in 30 years’ and is ‘thanks to the country’s improved economy’. Pensions are required to go up by a minimum of 0.25 percent a year and a maximum of the rate of inflation, or IPC index, plus 0.5 percent. Current figures show the highest contributory State pensions now sit at €2,573.70 a month and the average is €1,500, or 93 percent of the average gross salary in Spain. But the figures are skewed by very high earners in both cases – mostly, the average monthly State pension in Spain ranges from about €620 to €1,200, depending upon region. The 0.25 percent rise – which is all that has been applied for the past three years – also applies to noncontributory State pensions, which is a varying monthly sum of around €250. Pensioners’ associations and unions call both increases ‘insufficient’ and have accused the government of ‘ignoring social dialogue’. Spain's

largest unions, the labourers’ commission (CCOO) and general workers’ union (UGT) had both called for pensions to go up by 1.2 percent in 2017 and the minimum wage for a full-time job to rise to €800. A European Union regulation now requires that the minimum wage in all 28 member States be at least 60 percent of the average full-time salary, and

Spain had pledged to honour this by the end of 2018. In this case, the skewed figures artificially inflating the average employee’s salary to €1,613 before tax – around €1,290 to €1,370 net – prove advantageous to the growing number of workers on the minimum wage, since the 60 percent comes in much higher than if the most commonly-paid salary, typically about €1,000 a month, was used as a benchmark instead.

Homes & Gardens

“Camellias are amongst the world's best flowering plants. They are hardy and disease resistant, most varieties have attractive, glossy green foliage, and they put on their fabulous flower display in the cooler months of the year when the rest of the garden often looks dull and bare. Don Burke, Burke's Backyard. Camellias make a fine addition to any garden and if you have a suitable place to give one a home, I can promise you will fall in love with it and cherish it for many years. Choosing the right camellia There are over 3000 varieties, cultivars and hybrids of camellia so choosing the right plant may be daunting for a newcomer. The first aspect to take into consideration is the placement of your camellia. They really do not like too much exposure to wind, but otherwise are quite easy to grow. As a general rule most camellia species will prefer a semi-shade position rather than full sun, the exception being C. sasanquas which are quite sun hardy. Camellias are considered relatively slow growing and as a result all species will be quite happy in a pot or tub. Depending upon the variety, mature camellias ten years old or more can vary in size from a small shrub to a tree, so space requirements should always be considered before planting in the ground. Consider also what purpose your camellia may be serving. The most popular of the species, C. japonicas, represent the widest range in flower form, colour and size. As a result they make excellent aesthetic specimens. C. sasanquas can easily be transformed into outstanding hedges, espaliers, topiaries and groundcovers, whilst hybrids offer a strong middleground, resilience, and even fragrance. Lastly decide on the colour and style of flower that suits your needs. Camellias are available in different hues and shades of red, pink, white and combinations of the three called variegations. There are even some rarer yellow species of camellia. Flowers vary in size from miniature to very large and there are also different flower forms or styles to choose from,

including single, semi-double, anemone form, peony form, and formal double. Planting camellias Camellias are generally planted in the late fall through the early spring, although they may be set out any month of the year if properly cared for. Adequate moisture is a necessity until the roots become well established in the soil. Whether planting camellias in the garden or in pots, the procedure is much the same and relatively simple. If planting in the ground, dig a hole at least twice the size of the root ball and make sure the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Camellias prefer a slightly acid, well-draining soil, so fill with a good quality potting mix especially for gardenias, camellias and azaleas (can be purchased at most garden centres). Make sure that the camellia is not planted too deep as camellias are shallow rooted. Planting too deeply is a major cause of unhealthy plants. Now that the plant is in the ground a good watering in is required. This will help both the potting mix and camellia to settle. As a finishing touch, add a thick layer of mulch such as bark chippings or compost to help to preserve moisture. Maintaining your camellias In dry conditions camellias need to be watered well especially in the late summer months when they are forming their flower buds. They will shed these if you keep them thirsty. Feeding is ideally done each spring with camellia and azalea food when the camellia has finished flowering and new growth has started to appear. Camellias are considered very pest and disease resistant. Occasionally though, pests may become a nuisance. The pests that most commonly affect camellias are the sucking insects such as scale,

CostaBlancaPeople 17th - 23rd January 2017

aphids and mites. For easy and non-chemical prevention and control use insecticidal soap and white oil. Pruning Camellias often out-live the gardeners that planted them, and even though they are considered to be slow growing plants, they can become too large for specific areas of the garden. Pruning your camellias is not something you should be scared of, in fact it can be a very rewarding experience and doing so can yield thicker, bushier and healthier plants. C. Sasanqua varieties will happily tolerate quite thorough pruning from a young age. For other species

of camellias it is recommended you hold off on pruning heavily until they reach roughly the height or shape you require, or the plant has matured. Pruning is best done at the end of winter, after the camellia has finished flowering and before new growth has begun to appear. If spring has arrived and your camellia is still flowering you may have to sacrifice some end of season blooms in preference for pruning before the new growth period begins. Camellias are available at nurseries and garden centres and there are surely no greater beauties to add to your Spanish garden. Marc Vijverberg

Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania. It lies in the valley of the confluence of Neris and Vilnia rivers and has 527,930 inhabitants. Along with Linz, Austria, Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture in 2009. The word Vilnius is a masculine form of a Vilnia river's name (which is feminine) and refers to the river surge. As a capital Vilnius has always been a multinational city populated by Lithuanians, Germans, Slavs and Jews from time immemorial. It may be useful to know that the original city location is lost due to erosion, the present days Old Town appeared in the Middle Ages when the inhabitants were forced to settle there from the heights of a Vilnia river bank which became impossible to live. THINGS TO SEE AND DO Old Town. It is a city area which began to develop extensively since the Middle Ages and eventually has been surrounded by a defensive wall. The wall determined a firm area and its shape for a long period of time, this area now is called Old Town and has a separate status in Vilnius administrative division. You can visit in this area important places such as Royal Palace, Vilnius Cathedral, Crooked Castle, Presidential Palace or the Town hall. Also, throughout the year, there are a variety of cultural, music, cinema, theatre, art, and fashion festivals taking place. Cinema Springtime: Annually from the middle of March to beginning of April. International Film Festival (Vilnius IFF) “Kino pavasaris” is the largest cinematic event in the country, known and loved for its high quality independent film programme and rich accompanying package of cinema-related events,

workshops, and special initiatives. Vilnius Festival: Annually from the end of May to the beginning of July. International festival of classical music, one of the most prestigious, solid and versatile events in Lithuania. On the other hand, Vilnius is famous for its amber, wool socks and hats and flaxware. EAT AND DRINK An important place in Lithuanian cuisine is occupied by small dumplings (called koldūnai or virtiniai) made from dough and with a filling of meat, mushrooms, berries or cottage cheese. An interesting variety of koldūnai is “tinginiai” (“lazy bones”) – halfmoon shaped dumplings with a filling of freshly crushed blueberries. In most Lithuanian restaurants you can order kibinai and čeburėkai, which are imports from Karaim cuisine. Also popular are various types of pancakes made from flour (instead of grated raw potato), some with fillings of fruit or berries, others ‘plain’, made from yeast-raised dough, and served dipped in sour cream or berry jam. For a snack you can try marinated or salted herring with boiled potatoes, various kinds of cottage cheese or fermented cheeses, and hotsmoked or cold-smoked hams and sausages. Lithuanians also know many recipes for mushroom dishes. Mushrooms are used in sauces, as fillings, or served as an accompaniment to meat dishes. You can find different cuisines as Ukrainian or Thai restaurants. Lithuanian vodka (Lithuanian degtinė) is of excellent quality. The brand 'Lithuanian Vodka' is quite popular. The gold is the premium version. Cranberry is also nice.

SEVEN TELLTALE SIGNS, IT’S TIME TO SELL YOUR HOME Been contemplating whether now is the right time to sell your home? The 7 telltale signs will surely help you make up your mind. 1. If you’re family has extended, or maybe you’re extended family have moved in… Either way, if you’re struggling to fit everyone everywhere, then now is the time to look for a new nest. Yes, you’ve tried hard to accommodate the whole family and the children are all sharing rooms, but wouldn’t you like just one extra bedroom or bathroom? 2. Maybe you’ve become a “pet parent,” and the need of a garden is more practical than a balcony. Pets are part of the family too, and they need space! 3. Working from home and need a separate home office? Tired of having to keep moving the computer around to accommodate your busy family life? If you’re continually battling between working from home and family life, having just one extra room or just a little more space would put an end to that everyday misery, once and for all. 4. Struggling for you to get around, and need to be closer to public transport or amenities? Can you imagine how easier life would be, if you relocated closer to the shops or a bus stop? 5. Are you so busy, you don’t have time to maintain all that space, and the very thought of downsizing makes you dream of those well earned relaxing days, just sitting down to read a book instead of tidying up the garden, and maintaining the swimming pool that you never use? Bigger, doesn’t mean better, for everyone! Smaller, can

Next Star Wars to be filmed in Spain The next Star Wars film will reportedly begin filming in Spain in February. Producers of the Han Solo spin-off are believed to have chosen Fuerteventura as their filming location due to its diverse landscape. The Canary Island is known for its beautiful sandy beaches and fresh greenery, but is also home to large mountainous areas.

The upcoming film will star Alden Ehreinreich as the young Han Solo, a role Harrison Ford originated. Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has also been cast in an unspecified role, while Woody Harrelson is reportedly in talks to join as a mentor figure to Han. The film is expected to premiere on May 15 2018.

mean more manageable! 6. Maybe you’re now an “empty nester!” Children all grown up and moved out to be on their own, has left you with rooms that feel empty and unused. Downsizing could be your answer. 7. Renovating? You love a “project,” but there’s nothing left for you to do in your current home! You can overspend on home improvements. Waiting for the market to catch up with how much you’ve invested can take years, in some cases. Spend too much on upgrades, and you’ll find it hard to recuperate your money, when the time comes to sell. Easy solution… buy a new “project” and start all over again! If you recognize yourself somewhere amongst these 7 telltale signs, then it’s time to start putting the wheels in motion and make the move. You’ll be making either a better family life, or better life for you and your family. Need inspiration? Take a look at what’s on the market. You’ll never know what’s out there if you don’t look… your next home maybe cheaper and nearer than you think! Andrew Lloyd Webber comes to town

Food campaign success The Neighbourhood Association San Miguel Arcángel has collected a total of 246 kilos of non perishable foods during its Christmas Campaign, and kind hearted locals have also donated lots of toys as well. The residents also collected 2,831 euros that is to be spent at local businesses in San Miguel to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish as an extra contribution for needy families and a boost for local business. The Association wishes to thank all the people, establishments and associations such as Help Vega Baja, San Miguel Social Club, San Miguel Bowls Club, O’Brian Language Centre, Farmacia San Miguel and the German hair salon Eva’s Salon for their help and support in

this Christmas charity campaign. They also thanked the association volunteers for their work to make the project happen; especially when many had volunteered on key Christmas, New Year and Three Kings dates to ensure timely delivery of the food and toys. A spokesman said: “We want our first words this year, to be in gratitude. On behalf of the beneficiary families we would like to thank the community for its collaboration with the food bank. “The whole experience of this campaign has been an enormous and authentic gesture of humanity and generosity towards our fellow men and restores faith in human nature.”

Premier Costa choir Melody Makers International has announced its next major concert to be held at the Orihuela Costa Resort Hotel at La Zenia on Saturday 28th January. It is entitled “An Evening with Andrew Lloyd Webber”, and will include songs from such famous shows as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, Starlight Express, Evita, Phantom of the Opera, Song and Dance, Whistle Down the Wind, and more. It will also include songs written especially for the Barcelona Olympics and the Eurovision Song Contest, as well as the famous Pie Jesus from Lloyd Webber's Requiem. In addition to the highly-regarded Melody Makers chorus, the concerts will showcase a vast array of the best local solo talent, including Verity Hall, Mary Beer and Alyson Horsfall, along

with several songs from top local professional entertainer Rebecca Holt. Male soloists will include Graham Cooke, Bill Nicholson and conductor and director Nigel Hopkins. The whole show will be accompanied by a professional band flown in especially from the UK for the weekend. As usual there will be two shows on the day, with a Matinee performance at 2pm and the evening performance at 8pm. Tickets are available from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia; also at the Card Place at both Punta Prima and Benimar. Tickets can also be obtained from the Debra Charity Shops at both San Fulgencio and Quesada. A personal invitation has been sent to composer Andrew Lloyd Webber himself, who lives on Minorca, and it is hoped that he will attend one of the performances.

Child abductor dressed as one of the Three Kings A would-be child kidnapper disguised as one of the Three Wise Men during the Twelfth Night parades was thwarted by the victim's family and arrested in Madrid's Carabanchel neighbourhood, say Local Police. They say that a man aged 43 years old was taken into custody after trying to drag away an eight-year-old boy, grabbing him and hiding him under his cloak. The suspect had expected to go unnoticed, dressed as one of the Magi, or Three Kings as they are known in Spain, surrounded by dense crowds of families with children in a busy area. However, a 10-year-old relative of the would-be victim noticed what had happened and shouted for help, alerting his family and other spectators, who went after the kidnapper. They managed to pin him down and keep him restrained until the police got there, despite the fact he fought hard against them. The suspect has been remanded in custody, and police believe he may suffer from a psychiatric disorder.

It’s too soon

Why can’t they be happy for me?

The worst thing that has ever happened to me was losing my wife last year. My family and friends have been very kind, but my daughter is now pressing me to get rid of my wife’s clothes and her other

I was widowed in September, and the loneliness has been very hard. To my surprise I met someone shortly afterwards - quite by chance - I wasn't looking for it. We both know that we are in love. He wants us to move in together. My daughters are not happy for me and say it is too soon. I never thought I would meet anyone else in a month of Sundays, but I have been so unhappy without my husband, and living on my own in Spain, that I want to grab this opportunity.

personal things. The thought of this to me is quite upsetting, and I can’t ever imagine clearing out her things. I know this is what people do, and I have never quite understood it. I could never tell my family this, but I go to bed cuddling my wife’s clothes, just so I can still be kind of 'with her'.

I always say ‘never say never’, because none of us knows what we are likely to do in the same situation. We all think we know what we ought to do, for the sake of decency, but you have been lucky enough to meet someone who makes you feel happy. Bereavement and loneliness is a terrible thing to endure, and unless one has experienced it, no one knows how it feels, and this is what you need to gently tell your girls.

I am so sorry for your loss. And I am sure you won’t be the first person to want something of your partner’s to hold close when you need comforting. Please do not do anything you don’t want to do, nor bow to any kind of pressure when you are not ready. Perhaps you will never be ready, and that’s fine. Some people are happy with clearing out a deceased person's possessions, some are not, and it is an entirely personal choice.

New Year tax hike

Brighten up a dreary January with two night’s entertainment including the fabulous Bella Luna and Abba Elite! Bella Luna are the Costa’s Spanish duo singing all your favourite music from Gypsy Kings to Elvis to Michael Jackson – laugh out loud, toe tapping good fun. Then you have Abba Elite! – the live tribute to the world’s favourite pop group. With live musical arrangements, flawless four part harmonies, dynamic stage costumes and breathtaking choreography – this show is considered by audiences to be one of the most entertaining and convincing live shows to be found on the Costa. Guaranteed to fill the dancefloor! More than that however is the chance to have a fun filled weekend whilst supporting a local charity. The Paul Cunningham nurses deliver quality care to terminally ill patients in their own home. What a truly wonderful cause. I doubt many of us haven’t known someone who has been touched by such tragedy in their lives. What would these families have done without such wonderful support for them and their loved ones – and all free of charge!

By January, the longest night of the year has passed. The days at last start to gradually lengthen and before we know it we will all be complaining that "its too hot" So why not make the most of January. Where better to do that than in the entertainment capital of the Costa BlancaBenidorm. Here the bars, shops restaurant and hotels continue to bustle throughout the winter months. Given decent weather the odd hardy soul is even seen sunbathing or swimming in the sea! This can be a great time of year for a short getaway bargain. Staying in large comfortable 4* hotel with good facilities, full board, all rooms with balcony, indoor swimming pool and gymnasium and of course a bit of company provided by your fellow travellers. This 3 day weekend special from Saturday 21st January to Monday 23rd January is only 145€ full board. With coach transfers and the entertainment included this is such good value for money. ***5 euros will be donated to the charity for every ticket sold***

ORPORATE TAX on profits, or Impuesto sobre Sociedades, will suffer the steepest rises, and companies will no longer be able to offset losses made by their affiliate firms or holdings against their bill. This has already led to major organisations shutting their small branches and subsidiary companies. The move will affect around 15,000 companies in Spain, a country where the bulk of businesses are small, family-run enterprises. In total, Spanish companies will shell out a further €4.6 billion in 2017. Alcohol – except wine and beer – cigarettes and loose tobacco, and sugary drinks will attract a new tax, clawing back €350 million for the government. Tax on cigarettes will rise by between 2.5 percent and 6 percent, and on alcohol, by 5 percent. The soft drink tax has not yet been calculated, but has already sparked outrage from major producers. A further ‘environmental tax’, built into the increases, is expected to raise another €200m. After two years of petrol and diesel plummeting in price, the honeymoon is now over with the cost of a litre of diesel rising from an average of 96 cents a year ago to €1.166 from last Monday. Petro will go from its current average of €1.14 to €1.27, meaning a typical 21 percent rise on fuel across the board. Mains and bottled gas and electricity are expected to rise, despite the government having frozen standing charges for the third year running. With raw material increasing by 3 percent annually, it is expected this will be passed onto the consumer with an extra margin for additional tax income. Telecommunications will rise in price, with Spain’s main national operator Telefónica having announced hikes from February and most other major providers plan to do likewise in 2017. The basic price of electricity per megawatt per

Electricity, fuel and consumer goods have gone up in price. The increase was put in place on Monday, 2nd January as part of a tax hike aimed at reducing Spain’s national debt in order to comply with European Union regulations.

“The reduction in household spending power will be seen most of all in consumerism,” says AFI.

hour has increased, meaning consumption will rise by 30 percent in January. Given that 60 percent of electricity bills are made up of taxes and charges, the actual cost of use accounts for just 40 percent of what the consumer is charged monthly or bi-monthly, making it difficult to make substantial savings by being more careful about domestic power use. With the 30 percent power price rise, this will mean around 10 percent per month extra for household bills. The National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has criticised the electricity hike and plans to investigate whether claims of supply shortage are true, or just an excuse.

Lack of rainfall and wind across the country over the past year has meant wind farms and hydroelectric plants no longer producing enough power and, now, with winter having set in, less sunlight means a reduction in solar power. But with so many different tariffs paid by different consumers, experts say it is difficult to predict how much electricity will rise by – some claim it could be as little as €3 a year.

Property tax

Towns which have not had a catastral review in more than four years will be forced to do so this year. The catastral is the basic value of the plot and rebuilding

cost of a property, private or commercial, and a percentage of this value is charged annually as IBI, or property tax. In 2012, town councils which had not had a recent catastral review were obliged either to do so or to raise the percentage of this charged as IBI to 1.1 percent. Now, they do not have a choice, and at least 2,400 municipalities in Spain will carry out a review this year. Councils have some freedom to change the base percentage rate, and residents in towns which have not had catastral reviews since the 1980s or 1990s are hoping their local governments will exercise this freedom. But the forced reviews are likely to be good news for towns where the last revision was somewhere between 2006 and 2009, since land and property was at a record high and has since dropped by an average of 50 percent, meaning homeowners in this situation could actually see their IBI come down in 2017. Reports from private entities such as AFI and the BBVA bank predict the cost of living will rise by 3 percent overall next year. “The reduction in household spending power will be seen most of all in consumerism,” says AFI. It stresses that in Spain, consumer spending has a huge impact on the national economy, meaning if it falls, so will the GDP. As the national debt is calculated as a percentage of the GDP, causing the GDP to reduce will increase the debt, meaning the extra tax hikes may not make any difference at all to the final figure, AFI says. BBVA Research says tax increases are likely to lead to a negative effect ‘of about 0.2 percent or 0.3 percent’ on GDP growth in the short-term, and could reverse Spain’s still-weak recovery as well as putting employment at risk.

Worlds most Extraordinary Homes BBC2 - 10.00pm Award-winning architect Piers Taylor and actress and property enthusiast Caroline Quentin explore extraordinary homes built in coastal locations. The first stop is an island in Norway, for a stay in a four-bedroom house built on a footprint of just 100 square meters. Built from timber covered with concrete to withstand the extremes of weather, Piers and Caroline settle into this beautiful island escape with a swim followed by a barbeque. Next is southern Spain, to an unconventional home built into a steep cliff face overlooking the Mediterranean. Piers and Caroline then head to the other side of the world to New Zealand's South Island in Marlborough Sounds. This three-bedroom house is built from two separate wooden cladded structures, both held aloft by a series of hard wood timbers and linked by a glazed bridge corridor. Their final stop is Nova Scotia, to a house inspired by two ships in dry dock. episode 3. (Stereo, Widescreen, Subtitles, Audio Described)

The Other Woman Channel 4 - 10.00pm

Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Kate Upton and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau star in Nick Cassavetes' romcom about betrayal and revenge. Manhattan lawyer Carly Whitten thinks she's found her perfect love match in charming singleton and internet entrepreneur Mark King. But, when he ducks a social engagement with her, she heads over to his house to seduce him, only to be greeted at the door by Mark's wife Kate. Once they're each over the initial shock that there's another woman in their relationship, Carly and Kate direct their anger at Mark, rather than each other, begin to investigate his activities - and discover that he's also seeing a twentysomething called Amber. The three women band together and plot to get their own back, starting by humiliating the Lothario with a variety of cruel pranks. But they also discover his deception isn't confined to the realms of romance - and that his illegalities could have very serious repercussions for Kate.

Homeland Channel 4 - 10.00pm Season six picks up several months after the terrorist attack at Berlin's Hauptbahnhof Station was thwarted during the climactic finale of season five. Following the recent election of the new President of the United States, Carrie Mathison is back on American soil, working at a foundation that provides aid to the United States' Muslim community. Fifteen years after the 9/11 attacks, Carrie, along with the country's counterterrorism apparatus, is still coming to grips with the ramifications and responsibilities of balancing security and civil liberties. This season follows the different competing interests and complicated motivations that are revealed during the transition of power that takes place in the seventy days between incoming and outgoing administrations, and the individuals tasked with protecting western lives and values.

Surviving Dry January You have spent the festivities stuffing your face with chocolates and roast potatoes, while never turning down another glass of Cava, Baileys or mulled wine. So, chances are you are now using the New Year as a time for resolutions to make amends for all those excesses. However, while faddy diets, detox teas and juicing plans may make you feel virtuous, there’s little evidence they have a real effect, says Andrew Langford, chief executive of the British Liver Trust (britishlivertrust.org.uk). “If you look after your liver and it functions well, it will detox the body naturally,” he explains. The two most effective ways to look after your liver are to watch your alcohol intake and maintain a healthy weight.” But not everyone looks after their liver. Liver disease is the third most common cause of premature death in the UK – with more than 40 people dying from it daily. What’s more, the average age of death from liver disease is 57, compared to 80 for cancer, stroke and lung disease. However, 90 percent of liver disease is avoidable. Being overweight has led to a major increase in the problem. According to a recent report in medical journal The Lancet, of the 25 percent of the population now categorised as obese , most will have non-alcohol related fatty liver disease, and up to one in 20 will suffer ongoing inflammation and scarring that finally leads to cirrhosis. As obesity levels rise, these figures are only going to get worse. Research from the Royal Free Hospital in London on moderate drinkers who took part in Dry January found improvements in concentration and sleep patterns, as well as positive impacts on blood sugar levels, blood pressure and the liver, says Joanna Simons, head of Alcohol Concern , which runs the campaign. “It is also an effective behaviour change campaign,” she adds. “The most comprehensive study yet has shown that six months after completing Dry January, 65percent of people made a positive change to their habits by drinking less, or cutting alcohol out totally. What’s also emerging is the impact a break from alcohol has on mental health. Last year, 25

percent of people who took part reported an improvement in wellbeing.” But it’s not all good news. “While Dry January can be a great way to kick-start new drinking habits there’s little benefit if you see it as a penance, cross the days off the calendar and then return to unhealthy drinking,” warns Andrew Langford. He suggests taking time to reflect on why you drink. Assess how you feel after 31 days without alcohol - better sleep, weight loss, more energy - and then use that knowledge build a healthier ¬relationship with booze. “Aim to have at least two to three consecutive days off every week of the year,” he advises. “This allows the liver a chance to rest and rejuvenate, and it’s far more effective than taking one month off.” The latest guidelines advise no more than 14 units of alcohol a week – for both men and women – but there is actually no such thing as safe drinking, warns Andrew. And people are still confused about units; just 76ml of standard 13 percent wine and 250ml of standard 4 percent beer is one unit. For more advice check out drinkaware.co.uk .

Love your liver... Exercise regularly Regular exercise is one of the simplest ways to avoid or limit the progress of nonalcohol related fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Try to be active for 30 minutes a day with a mix of cardiovascular and strength training exercises. And avoid prolonged periods of sitting which appear to increase the risk of the condition, say scientists in South Korea. Try building more ‘incidental’ exercise into your day: stand up and walk around when you’re on the telephone, for example.

Protect yourself If you are planning to travel outside Europe and the US, make sure you visit your GP or local travel clinic in plenty of time to see if you need jabs to protect yourself from hepatitis A and B. Never share toothbrushes or razors as only a tiny

amount of blood is needed to pass on the hepatitis B or C viruses which can infect and damage the liver. Finally, ensure you only use licensed tattoo and piercing parlours with sterilised equipment.

Stay hydrated Water plays a crucial role in helping the liver flush toxins out of your system. Not drinking enough will cause the blood to thicken, making it more difficult to filter. Dehydration can also prevent you from getting all the nutrients you need for optimum health. Aim to drink at least two litres of water every day.

Look at your diet Artichoke, for instance, is renowned for its ability to stimulate and improve liver function. Similarly, eating beetroot helps support liver detoxification. Choline – a nutrient found in egg yolks, wheatgerm, turkey and peanuts – also boosts normal liver function. Upping your intake of vitamin E can help reduce symptoms of liver disease by preventing cell damage, according to US researchers at Case Western Reserve ¬University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. Good sources include nuts, seeds, wheatgerm, leafy greens and vegetable oils. And there’s evidence a low¬carbohydrate diet could improve the liver function of people with NAFLD, according to research published in the journal Diabesity in Practice. It’s thought sugar and starchy foods, such as bread and potatoes, pose a particular threat because they are rapidly turned into glucose, which is initially stored in the liver, while any excess is stored as body fat.

Ditch fizzy drinks Sugary drinks are particularly bad news

for your liver with research showing that people who drink more than one a day had more fat in their liver than those who didn’t – even after accounting for their overall calorie intake, weight and various other factors. Researchers believe the fructose type of sugar in these drinks is the major cause of fat being deposited in the liver.

Have a coffee break Regularly drinking moderate amounts of coffee (whether filtered, instant or espresso) may prevent liver cancer – says the World Health Organisation after reviewing 1,000 studies. Coffee also lowers the risk of other liver conditions including fibrosis (scar tissue that builds up within the liver) and cirrhosis, and can slow the progression of liver disease in some patients.

Stop smoking Smoking is a risk factor for liver disease and can exacerbate the symptoms. Nicotine raises the levels of fat in the blood, while the liver has to work hard to filter all those smoking-related toxins.

Be careful with over the counter medications Excess use of painkillers, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, can cause liver damage. If you’re prone to headaches, instead of popping a pill, try to figure out the root cause of why they keep coming back.

Five Ways to stay on the wagon in January If spending January’s 744 hours entirely booze-free will test your willpower to the max then these tips might help:

1. Avoid pubs: This might sound obvious but don’t put temptation in your way. Suggest to friends you meet at a cafe or go to the cinema, anywhere that alcohol is not the main focus of the night. 2. Try alcohol-free lagers or wine, a mocktail or sparkling water with lime or even just tonic water. 3. Clear out the bottles of drink from your home or lock them away; out of sight, out of mind. 4. Download the Alcohol Concern free app which will tell you how much you used to drink, how much money you’ve saved (think what you can buy!) and if you upgrade you can even receive motivational messages, articles and tips to keep you on track. 5. Enlist a friend. If you have another pal going booze free you can motivate each other, support each through those moments of weakness or even take up a new hobby together to take your minds off drinking.

Be honest! People who describe themselves as ‘moderate drinkers’ typically underestimate their alcohol intake by a whopping 40 percent! Use Drinkaware’s free mobile app to track your alcohol consumption and set goals based on your drinking habits to help moderate your intake. The British Liver Trust also has an app called Spruce that may help. You can find it at loveyourliver.org.uk/spruce.

ALCOHOLISM & THE BINGE DRINKER Many people may believe that an alcoholic is someone who drinks daily, often starting in the morning. The perception of the alcoholic sometimes extends to the man on a park bench with their bottle loosely concealed in a bag. In most cases, these concepts could not be further from the truth as the following story from a member of Alcoholics Anonymous testifies. “I am a recovering alcoholic living here in Spain. I choose the word ‘recovering’ and not ‘recovered’, despite the fact that I have not taken an alcoholic drink for 19 years. My recovery has been ongoing, one day at a time, since I picked up the phone and contacted Alcoholics Anonymous. My problem had been ‘binge drinking’ an expression we hear more and more in the media. I didn’t drink every day, far from it. Consequently it took a long time before I realised that I had problems with alcohol. In my late 20s, by which time I was married with two small children, I began to notice I was not drinking like friends and acquaintances of similar age, job, circumstances etc.

They seemed to be quite happy to stop drinking whenever they wanted to whereas I would always want to continue until I felt I had had enough which would usually mean I ended up drunk. That had been the pattern since I had started drinking seriously at the age of 18 whilst in the forces but became more serious when I became a civilian and, as the responsibilities of life increased, so did the amount I drank at any session. As time wore on the pattern grew more defined. I could stay away from alcohol for days, weeks, sometimes even months. During these periods I was

happy, my home and working life were good, and I convinced myself that I had no problems with alcohol - I was ‘in control’. Then, from where I have no idea, the thought would somehow enter my head “Why not? You can handle it – just a couple of quick pints at lunchtime - by the time I get home, no-one will know”. Despite my good intentions, my world and how I thought about my life began to change with the very first drink and before I knew it, I was into another ‘binge’. My drinking would last for two or three days,

drinking away from home at lunch times and evenings, making appearances at home only to eat and sleep, punctuated by rows and trouble. Then, one morning, I would wake up, full of remorse and apologies. I would promise, sincerely, to those close to me- and to myself - that I wouldn’t do it again. Over time, things just became worse. Then, one day I had just had enough, and from the moment I rang Alcoholics Anonymous, my life began to change for the better. I was relieved to find I was not alone with my drinking problems, and I began to recover. In AA no-one told me what to do, but there was plenty of advice and suggestions. I am grateful for the help and guidance I received and, today, I am happy to help others coming into the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous”. If you have doubts about your own drinking behaviour or are affected by that of a person close to you, why not come along to the open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous or contact the Helpline on the number given below.

Posties needed... The Correos, the Spanish Post office is seeking 2,450 new delivery employees in 2017. Postmen and postwomen are being sought this year with between 2,430 and 2,450 job openings as part of a plan to increase the workforce by 10,000 by 2020. The State post office has already advertised 1,606 jobs at the beginning of 2016 – which 125,000 people applied for. Correos has been praised by unions as being one of the few public sector firms to ensure 100 percent of vacancies caused

by retirement or resignations have been filled. The labour union (CCOO) has reminded the post office not to allow its mass recruitment drive to focus on strings of temporary contracts, but to ensure that at least the majority of positions filled are full-time and permanent. Postal delivery staff sought will be for a combination of rounds carried out on foot and rounds by moped, provided by the firm.

Are you Red Faced? If so you may well be suffering from Rosacea, a common skin disorder, but one that can cause misery and affect self confidence. It normally begins with a tendency to flush and blush more easily than other people but this redness can then spread beyond the nose and cheeks to the forehead and chin and sometimes even the ears. It can start as an occasional thing but become permanent. Rosacea can also cause visible blood vessels, swelling, acne like breakouts, thick lumpy skin and sometimes can even affect the eyes when it is known as ocular rosacea. If you have rosacea don’t think you are alone. It is common and can affect anyone some famous faces who had rosacea are Bill Clinton, Princess Diana and W.C Fields to name but a few.

This is all well and good but you want to know what you can do about it. If you visit your doctor he or she is likely to prescribe antibiotics, which may help in the first instance or a special cream which will also help. A different approach is to actually deal with the tiny blood vessels underneath the skin that are causing the problem. By doing this we are dealing with the underlying cause rather than just the symptoms. A modern approach to doing this is by using something called Intense Pulsed light or IPL. This is a machine specially designed for the purpose and after a few treatments the difference is amazing. It takes only a few minutes and is painless. The machine looks rather like a laser but works in a different way. If the vessels are really larhe then we may use another machine called Thermavein which again was specially developed

for this purpose. There are lotions and creams that you can buy in the pharmacies which may help but as a stand alone they are normally ineffective. Before you get chance to have IPL women can always use a green based foundation or powder to help to camouflage the redness. If you decide to try IPL this is the best time of year as the skin is cooler making it more successful to treat. Mediterranean diet prevents cognitive decline A Mediterranean diet could prevent brain shrinking in old age and stave off cognitive decline, a new study has suggested. Scientists have known the diet – which is typical in Spain – can help prevent dementia, but they did not know how it protected the brain. However, a new study has shown how the diet keeps brain cells active for longer, helping to slow down the inevitable shrinkage. “As we age, the brain shrinks and we lose brain cells which can affect learning and memory,” said the author of the study Dr Michelle Luciano, from the University of Edinburgh. “This study adds to the body of evidence that suggests the Mediterranean diet has a positive impact on brain health … and may be able to provide long-term protection to the brain.” Scientists gathered dietary information from 401 70 year olds and then scanned their brains at the age of 73 and 76, measuring brain volume and the thickness of the cerebral cortex. They found that those who closely followed a Mediterranean style diet – oily fish, vegetables, nuts and fruit – retained more volume over the period. Dr Clare Walton, Research Manager at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “There is an increasing amount of evidence to indicate that eating a healthy diet that’s rich in oily fish, fresh veg and nuts is good for your brain and can help you to maintain your memory as you get older. “Our brains shrink by 1-2 percent per year in old age and this study suggests that a Mediterranean-style diet could also potentially help to slow down this shrinking process.” As well as protect against dementia.

Lifetime health mapped in the womb Human health over the course of a lifetime is conditioned in the womb, according to Spanish scientists. Psychoneuroimmunologist Dr Xavi Cañellas and nutritionist Dr Jesús Sanchís, in their book Niños sanos, adultos sanos or Healthy children, healthy adults, say everything from expecting mothers’ diet through to their mental health and even the type of birth, along with breastor bottlefeeding, has a bearing on the future health of that child throughout their entire lives. However, those who take care to avoid or reduce stress, keep to a healthy diet and maintain their intestinal flora in good conditions can reverse some problems that they were born with, according to the book. Abuse of antibiotics by pregnant women can lead to allergies, autoimmune conditions, asthma and food intolerances, among other problems, says Dr Cañellas, who works at the Biomedical Research Institute at Girona’s Josep Trueta Hospital. “It's not normal for young children to have allergies, to have been on antibiotics several times before the age of five, or for teenagers to get acne,” Dr Cañellas insists. “Neither is it normal for girls as young as

nine or 10 to have already started their periods. That’s why the months of gestation are so important – they affect the baby's adult life. “The prognosis for human health in the west over the next few decades is worsening – by the year 2030, the public

healthcare system will be unable to cope with the levels of Type II diabetes suffered by society – so we need to encourage a change of habits.” Some of the trouble is that people tend to believe ‘fads’ and dietary claims, says the researcher. “There’s no scientific evidence to show that it's better to eat five or six small meals

a day, or that breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” Dr Cañellas says. “What is important is to eat as flexible a diet as possible – we recommend that, as often as possible, people eat organic, in-season, natural products, as locally-produced as is feasible – at the very least, in terms of fruit and vegetables, given that fresh and organic produce can be very expensive.” The book also debunks the ‘food pyramid’ which has been recommended for decades as the best possible guide to healthy eating. “It's a bit insulting that a pyramid aimed at recommending healthy eating to the population includes products like sweets, cakes, wine and other alcoholic drinks,” says Dr Sanchís. Their book even recommends going easy on pharmaceutical drugs. “Having a headache doesn't necessarily mean you need paracetamol; if you need antidepressants or painkillers to keep going, you should firstly try to find out what is causing the pain or depression,” Dr Sanchís stresses. He is currently working on his PhD thesis in the paediatric department at Valencia University's Faculty of Medicine.

Defibrillator Required As many of our readers may know, if anyone calls 112 for emergency services in Spain, often the first to attend the scene will be the local police. If a person is in the process of having a heart attack or has stopped breathing, the police will work on that individual until the ambulance services arrive. The local police of Benijófar do not have a defibrillator unit at this moment in time. If they had one, it may give heart attack victims more of a chance of survival. Catorce, with the approval of the local police chief in Benijofar have therefore set up a committee to raise funds during 2017 for a defibrillator to be purchased from the Red Cross in Almoradi. The Red Cross will then train the police officers how to use this unit. Organisers told the Costa Blanca People, “This could help many of the residents and expats living, working or just visiting this town on holidays or just having meals in any of the many bars and restaurants. A heart attack can happen at any time. Our first fund raising event will be on 18th January. There will be a pie and pea supper and entertainment will be provided by superb Sam Curtis. €5 per person admittance. Janet via email asks; Hi aunty. I want to use my Ebay and Paypal when I am in Spain for 4 or 5 months of the year and I want it in English and pounds sterling but I keep getting it in Spanish with prices in euros! Aunty Says; Hello Janet. This problem is due to Windows detecting the Spanish IP address of your internet connection and assuming you want everything in Spanish. The easiest way round this is to type www.ebay.co.uk into your browser address bar and it should go to the UK page. This also works with Google, Hotmail and Amazon. Steven from Quesada asks; I keep receiving a message popping up from PC Optimizer Pro that tells me I have loads of registry problems which are “slowing down my computer and could cause system failure”. I’m guessing this is some kind of scam and I think I accidently installed it when I downloaded a PDF editor. How do I go about removing this without causing any problems? Aunty Says; Hi Steven. You should always be cautious of any unfamiliar programs that pop up and warn you of problems on your PC as they will most likely try to install spyware which will definitely cause your computer to slow down. You should be able to completely remove this

software from Control Panel – Programs and Features. Do a full scan with your security programs just incase it has left any nasties behind. Barry via email asks: Hello again Aunty. Can you recommend what free security software I need to install on my new Windows 10 Acer Laptop as there are so many of them to choose from? I use my laptop for banking and buying stuff on Ebay and Amazon so I’m fairly conscious of the risks. Aunty Says: Hello Barry. I’m still a big fan of the free built in Windows Defender that has come pre-installed with your Windows 10. However if you don’t mind forking out a few bucks then the Kaspersky Internet Security app seems to get good reviews, you can download it from www.kaspersky.co.uk and it will set you back about €35. Install a copy of the free Malwarebytes as well and remember to scan once a week and you should be fine. Glen from Benidorm asks: Dear Aunty, I have an HP laptop that (surprisingly) is 3 months out of warranty and has started shutting down after 20 minutes. I have to restart it again with the on/off button and it will work for maybe 5 minutes but then it won’t do anything for hours no matter what I try. I haven’t tried hurling it into the neighbors’ pool but that is definitely on the cards. Please help me as it is driving

me mad. Aunty Says: Hello Glen. Normally when a computer consistently shuts down it is a sign of something overheating, and an even more sure sign is if it gets more frequent as the computer heats up. Try blowing any dust and fluff from the air vents around the sides and underneath and a good test is to prop the laptop up slightly so that some cool air can flow underneath. Your description has this kind of pattern so I’m fairly confident you will see an improvement. Let me know how you get on. Reg via email asks: I have recently upgraded to a new laptop with Windows10 and before that I had XP and if I ran into problems I could restore my computer to a previous time by using System Restore. How can I do this in Windows10 as I can’t seem to find it in the same place? Aunty Says: Hi Reg. You can but it’s a little more difficult to find than in XP but thankfully it is still there. The easiest way to find it is by holding down the Win key (looks like a flag) and press X and chose “System” from the list. From the window that pops up choose “System Protection” and click on the “System Restore” button. Tick the box “Show more restore points” and you should be good to go.

Any questions, you can email me at: auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and hopefully see you all next week.

Young drivers willing to lie to save money The RAC has discovered that almost half of young drivers are willing to name a parent as the main driver of their car in a bid to save money on insurance. The motoring organisation’s survey of 500 17 to 24-year-olds found that 47% didn’t see the problem with ‘fronting’ – despite it being an illegal practice that could leave your car uninsured. This is despite the majority (57%) of young motorists questioned admitting they realise the act is against the law.

“Fronting is where someone other than the main driver of a car is said to be the policyholder,” said the RAC’s insurance director Mark Godfrey. “In the case of a young driver who is the most frequent driver of a vehicle, this tends to be a parent with a longer, proven good track record as a driver and therefore attracts a lower insurance premium than their son or daughter would.” With 18- to 20-year-old drivers in the UK paying £993 a year for car insurance

on average, it’s not a surprise to see young people resorting to desperate measures in a bid to save cash. Godfrey added: “It’s important for anyone who has done this to realise that it could result in invalidating the policy for everyone covered by it, not just the young driver concerned. What’s more, it is illegal activities like this that increase the overall cost of insurance for all young drivers. “The fact our research shows more young males are aware of fronting may be because they think their insurance premiums will be higher than young women’s which, of course, is no longer the case since the EU ruling that gender cannot be used in determining premium prices.” If drivers are found to be fronting, their insurance company might refuse to pay out in the case of a crash, and could force them to compensate for damage caused to other vehicles. You could also be refused insurance in the future, be charged more – and the police could hit you with a £300 fine and six penalty points for driving without insurance. Your car could also be confiscated. The RAC says young drivers should reduce their car insurance costs by legal methods such as buying a car with a smaller engine or having a telematics ‘black box’ system fitted to monitor their driving behaviour.

Road rage Failure to use an indicator. Tailgating. Motorists who beep their horns at another car. A vehicle forcing its way into a line of traffic. These are pet peeves listed by drivers, when asked how other drivers make them angry. In a survey released recently, nearly 80 percent of respondents admitted to feeling anger behind the wheel at some point. “All normal drivers have feelings of anger

at times when someone else dangerously shifts lanes in front of them. All normal drivers have thoughts of retribution, like I’d like to get back at that person,” said psychologist Dr. David Kupfer. The survey found that male drivers were more likely than female drivers to admit to aggressive driving behaviours and Dr. Kupfer pointed to testosterone as a factor there.

He also named two other factors confronting modern drivers: A sense of entitlement with all drivers feeling they "own the road" and the programmable features increasingly available in every car, like internet and satellite music services and Bluetooth connectivity. "When you get into a car, you consider the car – especially kind of now that you can program your own music, talk on the phone in your car -- you see the car as your personal space, as your private space, and you forget that you’re sharing a very public road with other people," Dr. Kupfer said. He advises that the best way for drivers to overcome that feeling of road rage is to let go of the need to control other drivers on the road, saying, "I’m sure that everyone’s ideas of how other people should be driving are absolutely brilliant and correct, but letting go of what you can’t control is wise." If the driver is transporting children, Dr. Kupfer says that it's also best to be a good role model behind the wheel for the drivers of the future.

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Oh, so Dimitri was the problem after all was he? Who would have thought it, that with West Ham’s star man refusing to play that the Hammers would suddenly look like a team completely at home at the London Stadium and put in the kind of performance that had even the most fervent Big Sam fan going “oh, that’s why they sacked him for Bilic.” According to Slav, Payet had not just refused to play, he threatened to fake injury during the game if picked. Maybe that is what Andy Carroll has been doing all these years? The closest a human got to someone in a Hammers shirt on Saturday was the security guard detailed to man-mark the Payet mural on the wall. Palace were torn apart in the second half, Antonio taking on the Frenchman’s role and being instrumental. And what about Andy Carroll’s overhead kick? Careful Andy, you’ll pull a hammy doing that. Apparently he survived though, and nothing will beat that this weekend. Who had money on Joey Barton scoring on his Premier League return? Other than Joey, of course. Burnley’s home form is something to marvel at and might just keep them in the Premier League. Barton has always considered himself a player more intelligent than others, and he went some way to proving that self-made theory by slipping the ball under the wall and past Fraser Forster in the Southampton goal. Burnley are 10th! Yes, 10th!

Mike Phelan was badly treated, young English managers should be given more chances, Hull haven’t got a clue, relegation certainties and who the actual hell is Marco Silva are all narratives doing the recent rounds. Oh, he won you say? What’s that? He out-tacticed Eddie Howe? Isn’t he one of those young English managers? Blimey. Hull beat the wonderfully inconsistent Bournemouth at the KCOM and, following their half decent attempt at Old Trafford midweek, look like they might actually have found a manager that knows what he is doing after all. I wonder how Mike is Phelan right now? Claude Makelele wore the look of a man who had just realised how daft it was to leave the French Riviera to head to Wales. Paul Clement wore the look of a man that was thinking “but Carlo promised me I’d be a good number one.” Alexis wore the look of a man that was thinking “but it’s my ball and I want to play every single goddam minute there is.” Arsenal smashed Swansea who, clearly, didn’t help their cause by scoring two of Arsenal’s goals for them. Every time Olivier Giroud starts, he scores. Fact. Swansea are hoping that signing Tom Carroll might help them. They only have to look at Hull to see that buying up Tottenham off-cuts doesn’t always guarantee the lack of a relegation battle. I’m surprised another fact, the one that tells us Harry Kane has recently become a father, has not been more widely reported. “”Who’s the Daddy?” being asked of the hat-trick getter on live television truly plumbed “journalistic

reporting” to depths that not even The Sun or the Telegraph can dream of. Harry scored three, WBA returned back to the Black Country in a very black mood. Sales of my “Hughes Out!” banners are likely to take a bit of a hit this week. Mind you, I could not have expected to make my millions the week after Stoke played Sunderland could I? Unsurprisingly Sunderland were woeful and Jermain Defoe still managed to score. Get yourself down to West Ham Jermain, end your career with a smile on your face. Still, Jeremain Lens will be happy. The Sunderland midfielder believes it will be much easier to leave Sunderland if they get relegated. I would imagine his wish might come true sooner than he thinks if he keeps saying that in front of David Moyes.

agent, Jorge Mendes, and they played a game of truth or dare. Mendes chose dare, and Jose challenged him to get Costa to believe there was a Chinese club willing to pay him £36m a year. I bet Jose is having a right laugh about that at Old Trafford right now. People seem to think that the rumour has even more legs because Mendes is currently in China. People, people. Mendes is an agent. He has players he wants to move on because he gets a whopping big cut every time he does it. Don’t act all surprised that he is hanging around where the money clearly is, he isn’t stupid. Anyway, Chelsea didn’t miss Costa as they managed to beat Leicester 3-0. Claudio is tinkering properly now. This isn’t going to end well for Claudio. Please, please resign before your legacy is tarnished. Go out in a Champions League blaze of glory and call it a day then. Nobody wants to see you sacked. Nobody wants me to comment on Watford and Middlesboro do they? No? Good. Moving on.

I have a theory about the whole Diego Costa thing, despite Antonio Conte assuring us “he is only injured.” I reckon that Jose was out to dinner with his

Sunday was all about Merseyside against Manchester, and it was a little one sided in the first game. What’s that Pep? The Premier League is tougher than you expected? Can you please tell that to all the Bundesliga and La Liga fanboys that are used to two, maybe three teams being able to actually win their league? I know it’s not John Stones fault he cost £50m. I know it’s not his fault he is still only 22. I know it takes time for a manager like Pep to come in and convey his very clever tactics to a new group of players in a tough league. I know all this. But it’s still

very funny to watch them get turned over 4-0 by Everton of all people. Tom Davies is now my favourite Premier League player as he is young, English, Everton through and through and most importantly, he wears black boots. You can’t beat that. As for City? Never has a club had so much money and spent it so badly over the course of a decade. With their resources, no other club in England should be getting near them. Incredible, and United fans were saying earlier in the season that they hope Pep will get as many pelters as José if and when the tide turns. Oh, he will. Mind you, Pep shuffling from foot to foot in the post match interview was more KM covered than Yaya managed all day. After that performance, it is fair to say all doping charges against City will be dropped. Pogba dabbed his way through the first half at Old Trafford. He dabbed his way to giving away a penalty with an outstretched arm. He dabbed his way to throttling Jordan Henderson. In fact, he dabbed his way to somehow avoiding two yellow card in the first 45 minutes. I don’t think José can claim to be unlucky any longer as United’s equaliser came from an offside Valencia slinging in a cross to the big man. No, not Zlatan but Fellaini. He hit the post and then the other big man, yes Zlatan, scored the equaliser and looked like he quite enjoyed it too. Not as much as Chelsea and Spurs enjoyed it however. Liverpool in shock failure to close a game out, and that is why they won’t win the title folks. Chelsea lead it by seven points. With or without Costa, the title is theirs. Honest.

Orihuela 2-1 CD Torrevieja ABBEY ANGLING

We fished the 1st round of the Abbey Angling Cup at El Bosquet Complex on the 3rd January. The water temperature is now a steady 10 to 12 degrees and the roads have now dried up after the recent heavy rains. Ian Brown making the best of a draw on the lake to take 1st place with over 10kgs, but the weights overall were poor. 1st Ian Brown with 10.320kgs fishing the pole and feeder using bread and maggot 2nd Lennie Bolton with 7.300kgs fishing the pole using bread and maggot 3rd Richard Wood with 6.830kgs fishing the pole using bread and corn This week’s 2nd round of the Abbey Angling Cup was fished at Nancy’s on the 10th January. The water levels have now dropped to the normal winter levels, and the banks have all but dried up. A couple of new pegs have been cleared, with Lennie Bolton drawing one of them and as usual he won the match with over 23kgs, and no one else managing double figures, although Richard Wood caught a good Carp weighing in at 5.400kgs which is over 12lb. 1st Lennie Bolton with

23.200kgs fishing the pole using bread and maggot 2nd Bill Reade with 8.370kgs fishing straight lead on the bread 3rd Richard Wood with 8.160kgs fishing the feeder using corn There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club All details are available on our new website abbeyangling.es or from Terry on 965328368

RODS & REELS

Our first round match of the Winter Series was also fished at the El Bosquet Complex on the 4th January. It was decided to fish the back channel number 2 which turned out to be a good idea for some, especially Bill Cannon who won the match with over 21kgs fishing the pole maggot and bread. The other top two weights also came off this stretch, but remember do not fish the back

channels if it is wet and if it starts to rain get off quickly. 1st Bill Cannon with 21.600kgs fishing the pole using maggot and bread 2nd Bill Reade with 19.850kgs fishing the pole using bread and pellet 3rd Ian Brown with 15.400kgs fishing the pole using bread and maggot We fished the 2nd round of the Winter Series on the El Bosquet Complex on the 11th January. We gave the No 2 back channel a go this week with a full complement of pegs, but it was a disaster with only the first and last peg catching any amount. Possibly the pressure of a lot of anglers put the fish down, as there is no cover on the far bank. Dave Hutchinson on the first peg had a good day with over 14kgs. 1st Dave Hutchinson with 14.360kgs fishing the pole using maggot and bread 2nd A Reid with 13.900kgs fishing the feeder using corn and bread 3rd Jim Rouse with 4.880kgs fishing the pole using corn and bread There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 966729293 or 617283503

Buba, Vicente and Calzado returned from suspension and were joined by debutants Kana, Illyes and Diaby in a hard to recognise Torry line up. New boy Jorge also played his first away match and manager Pedreno elected to push Vicente and Luis Carlos into forward positions. This produced a team which lacked strong formation and cohesion, often finding themselves out of position or six players lined up across the back four. There was plenty of industry, not just much in the way of organised penetrative football. The physically robust Antonio led the Orihuela line with his usual dominance and created problems for Torry from the off. He opened the scoring midway through the first half and was unlucky not to double his tally when heading against the crossbar shortly after. Torry were being attacked down both flanks and seemed unable to stem the continuous flow of opportunities created by the home side. It was no surprise when Moreno added a second goal on 38 minutes, seemingly having all the time in the world from just inside the Torry box to pick his spot. Diaby was making a good first impression in a Torry shirt with strong tackling in the middle of the park. Likewise, Ilyes was putting himself about with gusto leading the Torry line, but support up front for him was thin on the ground. The pitch was in poor

condition with a significant puddle outside one goal area, which stopped the ball in its tracks on more than one occasion. However, it was Orihuela who adapted best and they dominated play in the first forty five, leading 2-0 at the interval and appearing likely to add to that in the second half. With no noticeable improvement Pedreno rang the changes with left back Kana giving way to striker Robles, then Matheus replacing Ilyes who had gone very quiet. This invigorated the Torry attack with much more punch to forward forays. However, it was not until the 79th minute that the breakthrough was made when a courageous Pastor zoomed in on a cross to direct the ball past Emilio to reduce the deficit. Immediately Robles secured the ball from the back of the net, racing back with it to the centre circle to get proceedings underway without delay.

Kana in Orihuela

Torry finally got the bit between their teeth and Orihuela began to falter under the pressure. They looked unsure and were happy to boot the ball to safety no matter where it went. Robles and Matheus were busy and able to take opponents on and pass them with their pace and tenacity. Pastor just failed to get on the end of a good cross, Diaby had a fierce drive shoot over the bar and Calzado joined the front rank in search of the equaliser. Orihuela survived the pressure and completed the league double over Torry, as Villareal C had done the previous week. It is runaway league leaders Olimpic Xativa up next, seeking also to complete the double over a team that are most definitely fighting for their third division survival. That match kicks off at 5pm at the Nelson Mandela on Sunday 22 January where fans are likely to see the home debuts of some of these latest signings in action.
