Vandals desecrate RBL memorials to brave British soldiers There was outrage amongst members of the Royal British Legion as a cross to fallen war heroes and an RBL time capsule were both found to have been vandalised in recent separate attacks in Mil Palmeras and Torrevieja. Mil Palmeras, the RBL time capsule which sits alongside the Remembrance Garden in the forecourt of the Catholic Church Capilla de las Mil Palmeras was attacked. The time capsule sits under a heavy glass cover which looked as though it had been shattered with a heavy bar or hammer. The time capsule contains a number of specially chosen items which depict the establishment and evolution of the Orihuela and Costa District Branch. This includes documents, photographs and CD’s all of which were laid in whats was thought to be a safe haven for future generations to enjoy. Committee member and RBL Standard Bearer Eddie Coleman, was first to notice the smashed cover and has since been hard at work repairing the damage. He had to remove the ruined glass and

cover the plinth with a temporary top until such time as a new cover can be ordered. Mr Coleman also said that whilst he was carrying out the repair he found evidence of drug usage by the side of the monument. In La Siesta, just outside the Parish Church, the marble base of the cross standing in the RBL Memorial Garden has also been damaged by someone using a heavy object and although the incidents are thought not to be related, it’s a double blow for the organisation, which now has to pay for the repairs. The base of the cross also appears to have been dealt several heavy blows with a hammer. The mindless vandalism has left the rectangular base smashed, resulting in several thousands of euros worth of damage. The vandalism in La Siesta was first noticed by Pastor Keith Brown, the Chaplain of the Royal British Legion in Spain North, who regularly visits the monument to pay his respects. Keith said: “I was absolutely mortified when I

first saw the destruction that the vandals had caused. Although I have asked around, nobody seems to have any information about the incident so there seems to be little that we can do. I will be speaking to my fellow priests at La Siesta Church, along with the President and Chairman of the Torrevieja RBL branch to see how we can stop it from happening again.”

Charity fashion show to help the animals On Thursday 6th September Cheers Bar and Restaurant in Eagles Nest is hosting a charity Fashion Show from 11.30am. New and nearly new clothes will be presented and available to buy, there will also be a cream tea and fundraising raffle. To reserve a table at the event, please call the bar on 966723438. The fashion show has been organised by Diane Westbrook, to help non-profit charity Happy Animales, which supports the animals at Finca Villamartin founded several years ago by Mona Nowak. The Finca currently houses 9 horses, 4 ponies, 13 geese, 4 pigs, 9 goats, 2 dogs, Donald and Daisy Duck , 1 rooster, 2 ferrets and 15 cats. All these animals were rescued after a bad life or because they had been abandoned once their uncaring owners had enough of them. Happy Animale is trying very hard to give them another chance in life, but needs your help. Local residents are being invited to the fashion show to help raise much needed funds to continue caring for these animals. All the money raised will go towards the animals’ food, hay, water, blacksmith costs, vet bills and repairs to stables, kennels and shelters, the cost is usually around 1,200 euros each month. If you are unable to make the fashion show, but would like to help, then donations can be made to directly to: IBAN ES 80 0075 1055 4806 0035 0496 Banco Popular Torrevieja or PayPal happyanimalesspanien@gmail.com Volunteers, food sponsors, long-term sponsors, cake makers, raffle prizes are also very welcome, or if you would like to organise an event or activity of your own to support Finca Villamartin then please get in touch on the numbers below. BITE SIZE Dog beach battle NEWS: continues An 85 year old man suffered a heart attack on 31st August whilst on El Cura beach in Torrevieja. At about 1.40pm the incident took place and lifeguards and the first aid service were able to resuscitate him after 27 minutes. The man was then transferred to Torrevieja hospital by an ambulance. Two weeks ago, lifeguards had training in dealing with this kind of incident which is the most frequent cause of drowning during the summer season. The lifeguard on duty had been trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Local residents are refusing to accept the judgement by a court that the town council are within their rights to identify a beach which can be used by dogs and their owners. On Sunday, 26th August, the police had to be called to settle an argument that was taking place between some dogs and their owners

More money on sports The councillor for sports, Víctor Ferrández, has been speaking about the total amount spent on sports in Torrevieja. In 2018, he says that 4.5 million euros has been spent. ‘This is an increase of 1.2 million from what was spent in 2015,’ he says. ‘This is in spite of the fact that the entire budget for the town has decreased from 98.9 million to 90.4 million. This means that the amount allocated to sports has gone from being 3% to 5%.’

and local residents in la Cala del Moro. The dispute took place on Sunday morning when once again the signs advertising the location of the beach had been removed along with the rules that dog owners must follow. The hostility began at around 1pm as local residents called the local police to inform them that there were many people using the beach with dogs in the absence of the sign permitting them to do so.

According to witnesses at the time, the police took details of those using the beach with dogs whilst the resident continued to verbally abuse them, even threatening to kill their pets. The court had declared that the town hall could continue to allocate the beach in this way as it is in the overall interest of the town’s people. However, local people who have properties in the area have continued to harass those using it on a daily basis. The situation has been made more complicated for the police who are being called out as it is apparently difficult for them to know exactly where the area reserved for dogs extends to without the signs being present. During the disturbances on Sunday the police made their own territorial marks to indicate where the dogs could and couldn’t go. The residents claim that they are not responsible for the removal of the signs but that when they have ‘disappeared’ they have not been replaced. Councillor Javier Manzanares is responsible for the beaches. In response he indicated that the signs have been removed at least twice on the Cala del Moro and three times on the other designated beach of Punta Margalla. There is currently no end in site to this contentious issue. Suzanne O’Connell

SPANISH PARENTS FINED AFTER SON TAKES DIP IN ROME FOUNTAIN A Spanish family on holiday in Rome has been fined €450 after their 12-year-old son went for a dip in a fountain in the Piazza Navona. According to Italian daily newspaper Il Mattino, police forced the boy out of

the water, whilst his three young siblings all egged him on to get back into the fountain. The four children's parents were allegedly shopping nearby, and police tracked them down to give them the fine notice.

BITE SIZE Weekly market to NEWS: move at last Continued from page 3

The classes involve native English speakers who chat with young people who are anxious to improve their speaking skills. They take place on Tuesdays at 10am and Wednesdays at 5pm in the CIAJ building which is next to Burger King on the Paseo Juan Aparicio. Crystal East co-ordinates the classes which are now into their sixth year. Over this time they have helped many people anxious to learn English either for their own development or to gain entry to university or pass examinations. The classes are informal and there is no need to prepare materials. They have also proved to be very beneficial and enjoyable for the English speakers who take part. Crystal is always on the look out for new volunteers so if you might be interested in helping please contact her at: crystaleast16@yahoo.co.uk

Fountain grass threatens local species The Fountain grass or ‘rabo de gato’ (cat’s tail) is an invasive species of plant that is native to northern Africa and Tunisia. However, it has become adapted to the milder climate in the south of Alicante and has been spreading locally at a worrying rate. Part of the problem seems to be that it is being used for decorative and ornamental purposes in local gardens. The plant is actually prohibited from being grown and has been since 2009 in Valencia and 2013 across Spain. The scientific name for the rabo de gato is Pennisetum setaceum and it can be seen in many different places now around the town. It’s a tall plant that looks attractive and so has found its way into a number of gardens and now could spread into the natural parks in the area too. The problem is that this hardy plant can spread rapidly and threatens native species.

Finally, La Mata’s weekly market is to move on Wednesday 5th September. The announcement was made by Councillor Javier Manzanares who explained that the market stalls holders have been informed. The market will now be on la Avenida de Francia, between la Avenida de los Daneses and la Avenida de los Suecos; on la Avenida de los Holandeses, between la Avenida de Inglaterra and la Avenida Bélgica and on la Avenida de los Suecos, between la Avenida de Bélgica and la Avenida de Inglaterra. This position was chosen, according to the councillor, for ease of access and size. There are two bus stops close by and it is only a few metres from the town centre and urbanisations. It was hoped that the market could have moved before now. However, the need for an evacuation plan held up the change in location. The market’s original

What to do with the third floor The indoor market in the centre of Torrevieja continues to cause concern. The building currently does not hold an opening licence and the town hall has plans to make modifications to the ground floor level to enable the stall holders there to continue trading. However, the company that owns the third floor is now appealing to the courts against the situation. They had planned to open a cinema at this level and are blaming past councils for allowing them to enter into an agreement about the premises when they would never be able to put it to use. It is claimed that the entire building, which was opened in 1995, does not comply with urban planning law and that there was no work permit or opening licence. The idea was originally that of the mayor, Pedro Hernández, who has since served a term in prison. The concept was to combine the commercial activities of the market with leisure activities and an underground car park. However, only the ground floor market continues to trade and the town council plans to invest €90,000 to make it legal.

site was considered to be unsafe as part of the parking area was above the canal del Acequión de La Mata. The Patrimonio del Estado has asked for changes to be made to the market’s location for some time, concerned that it could be vulnerable to subsistence. The move is contentious and market stall holders are likely to continue to raise their concerns. They have complained that the move is not necessary and that adjustments could be made to the present site to make it safe. Councillor Manzanares points out that the same number of stalls will be available and that the site is big enough to accommodate each pitch at its usual size. The different stalls have been allocated according to a lottery system and there will be areas for eating and relaxation. Suzanne O’Connell

of what the dogs do and how the children should react to them if they see them in the street. ‘We want people to be more aware about what a guide dog does,’ explained

the councillor, Fabiana Ibarra. He had accompanied the dogs to talk to the children, an initiative that will continue over the coming months with visits to the town’s schools. The children got chance to meet two dogs, Dama and Abi who accompanied their owners. One dog, is a guide dog and helps his visually impaired owner. The other dog supports someone who suffers from diabetes and has done so since he was nine years old. This dog provides assistance by notifying his owner of changes in blood sugar levels. The two dogs both wear fluorescent jackets to distinguish them and alert the public as to their role. It was explained to the children that they should not approach the pets if they see them out in public as this could distract them from their work. The two animals have been provided by the Frey Association which has been running since January 2018. They help provide the training that is needed and legal support – both expensive items. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Calendar Girls NEWS: is coming to Continued from page 5 people have died according to the statistics released by the Real Federación Española de Salvamento y Socorrismo. The good news is that this total is down on last year when there were 71 recorded deaths. It’s believed that the reduced number is due to the late start of the season because of bad weather. The total figure recorded since January this year has now reached 251 which is also down on last year when 377 deaths were recorded. Andalucia is the autonomous community with the most fatalities (36) followed by Galicia, Canarias, Cataluña and then Valencia which recorded 25 deaths altogether or 10% of the total.

Concern about new area for tipping A planned waste project in San Miguel is causing concern in the town hall of Torrevieja. It is believed that the plan to build a waste recovery plant close to the natural park of Las Lagunas could have an impact on this area. It’s being proposed that the plant will treat and recover more than 124,000 tons of rubbish every year. It will not, however, be a landfill site. Instead, pickup trucks will bring waste to the plant where some will be treated and the rest will be sent to a landfill site elsewhere. The project, however, still has a number of legalities to navigate before becoming a reality. Suzanne O’Connell

Agamed and the town The source of hall working together Náufragos’mystery Monday 27th August saw representatives from the town hall and Agamed, the local water board, coming together, to look at the ways in which they can work for the improvement of the town. Present at the meeting was the Councillor for the environment, Fanny Serrano, the managing director of Agamed, José Manuel Nadal and biologists Jesús Sánchez and Juan Antonio Pujol. The meeting began with a review of the projects that have been developed and carried out in previous years. Consideration was given to existing programmes and how they might be continued and developed. This has been a beneficial collaboration that is entering a more formal phase. One area where it is agreed that more work should be done is in that of education. ‘We need to carry out more

environmental education activities,’ explained Councillor Serrano. ‘This is an area for development particularly when it comes to work in schools. The youngest in our community need to learn how to use water in a sustainable way.’ In July a campaign had been carried out to advertise the fact that you can drink the water locally. Tasting sessions were held in La Mata weekly market and in the Avenida de Los Marineros close to the tourist information point. The idea was to encourage people to taste the water and see that it need not taste of chlorine. This is an environmentally friendly project as the use of plastic bottles in drinking water production is a major source of concern. ‘We will organise new tasting to continue informing the public of the quality of the drinking water,’ José

Manuel Nadal said at the meeting. Other planned activities include an environmental and tourism event in the natural parks. ‘Music in the Park’ will take place featuring members of the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra by the end of September. Other plans include the re-vegetation of the area around the water mill and the replanting and preservation of rare species around the natural park. There have already been a number of activities involving the removal of invasive species and these are set to continue. ‘We have been collaborating on environmental matters since our local government was formed,’ said Councillor Serrano. ‘We have now entered into a formal agreement that will underpin our joint efforts in preserving and improving the environment.’ Suzanne O’Connell

STAGESTRUCK Stagestruck, has been running very successfully for a number of years, but in the last 12 months their Director, Leigh Humphries, has been poorly, and although she has made a good recovery, decided it was time to step down. At first it seemed the group might fold, but a few weeks ago Suzanne Stokes stepped into the breach, and now the Christmas Pantomime is back on track. Suzanne, who has a lot of theatre

experience and started Dramatic Licence back in 2005, rewrote the script for Robin Hood and Babes in the Wood to bring it up to date, and now rehearsals are underway. ‘I am honoured to be taking on this group of lovely people and delighted at the talent they are displaying at rehearsal’ said Suzanne. ‘Watching The Sherriff of Nottingham sing Elvis Presley’s Trouble was priceless.

Already we are having a lot of fun, and although this is a more ‘adult’ panto, all the elements are there. So if you want to see Theresa and Boris as the Babes, and Merkela (call me Angie) as the wicked witch, watch out for more publicity in the coming weeks.’ Stagestruck make massive donations to the Alzheimer’s Associations from all their shows at the Teatro Cardenal Belluga in San Fulgencio.

spill revealed When swimmers in the sea off Los Náufragos beach found themselves coated in a thick, brown liquid the area was closed and cordoned off. But what was the pungent substance that had afflicted those in the sea on the day of August 5th? Now analysis has shown that the liquid had come from a boat or other marine transport and is the kind that is used in maintaining a boat’s machinery. The analysis was completed by Agamed and the good news is that the substance is not harmful to people and there should be no long term effects for those who were in the sea that day. When the swimmers had emerged from the sea there was confusion and concern that the substance they brought with them might have been harmful and

three swimmers were taken to hospital to check. There had been some suggestion that the substance might have originated from the sewage works but this has now been discounted. The beach was closed and the Local Police, Guardia Civil and Civil Protection collaborated with the Councillor for beaches, Javier Manzanares, to deal immediately with the problem. Following the closure of the beach on the 5th it was reopened on the 6th and inspections were made every hour. Another strip of the liquid was detected but it was about 30 metres away from where people were bathing and did not pose a risk. Since then no new incidents have been recorded. Suzanne O’Connell

Fire destroys flats The fire brigade were called out to a building in calle Pascual Flores in the Nueva Torrevieja urbanisation on 26th August. Thick smoke was seen at around 2pm coming from flats in the apartment block and billowing out onto the terrace and other balconies. The local police cordoned off the area to prevent onlookers and the fire was attended to until 4pm by many fire

fighters from the provincial Fire Brigade. Due to the height of the building, the fire fighters were required to use ladders to get to the flames as quickly as possible. According to early reports, there appeared to be more than one source to the fire, leading to suspicion that the cause was arson. However, an investigation has now begun to refute or support this. Some of the rooms in the

block were completely destroyed and the fire burned at an intense heat, causing particular difficulties for the fire fighters who had to tackle it in turn. It is believed that the building has been occupied illegally at times and on the day of the fire there was nobody there. Neither the firemen nor the local police were prepared to comment on this. BOY RACER ARRESTED The Guardia Civil arrested a 19 year old young Spanish man from Torrevieja for travelling at 230 kilometres an hour on the A-35 in Valencia as it passed through Vallada. A video had been shared on social media of his speed dial, acting as the perfect evidence of his crime. The video went viral and was spotted by the local police in Torrevieja who recognised the driver because of other crimes he has committed. The video shows the man driving the vehicle whilst being recorded by one of the passengers and as he

passed other cars at great speed. The local police of Torrevieja got in touch with the Guardia Civil who immediately identified where the car was being driven. The Guardia were able to identify whereabouts the crime was committed due to the video recording which included a number of recognisable landmarks and buildings. The young man is now being investigated for reckless driving and his vehicle has been impounded. Suzanne O’Connell

Does the Eras de la Sal need a licence too? Outdoor cinema in Torrevieja The subject of opening and activity licences in Torrevieja continues. Now it’s the Eras de la Sal that’s in the spotlight. The Eras de la Sal is the old part of town where many concerts and outdoor events take place, including the international Habaneras choral competition. There now seems to be uncertainty as to whether the area has the necessary activity licence to host the events that it currently does. The use of the Eras de la Sal

has become particularly important as the previous location for many events, the Municipal Theatre, remains closed. According to a report from the town planning department, a license is necessary and currently is not in place. The activity licence guarantees that a public show has the minimum safety and evacuation measures along with the correct insurance, medical cover and private security. This applies whoever the

show is organised by, whether it is a private company or a town hall project. The delay in the performance of La Unión and the cancellation of the Luz Casal concerts are believed to have been linked to this controversy. With more concerts to come, including that of Kiko Veneno and Los Secretos on Friday, it is hoped that the confusion is rectified soon. Suzanne O’Connell

From the 3rd to 7th September there will be opportunity to watch some films in the outdoor venue of Eras de la Sal. This old part of Torrevieja used to be where they stored the salt in the very first years of the industry in the town. Now it plays host to a number of outdoor events, including showing films. This ‘cinema of summer’ is the third event of its kind and will feature comedy films. Each evening, the film shown, in Spanish, will begin at 9.30pm and entry is free. The councillor for culture, Domingo

Pérez, explained that he feels particularly proud to be able to offer this opportunity to watch films in the open air during the summer season. The films that will be showing include El jovencito Frankenstein (3rd September), Victor o Victoria (4th September), Algo pasa con Mary (5th September), Mujeres al borde de una ataque de nervios (6th September) and Granujas a todo ritmo (7th September). Four tigers enter retirement During August four tigers were found good homes to replace the circuses they had lived in all their lives. Two were placed in Aitana Alicante and two in Asturias. The tigers were 19 and 16 years old and can now look forward to enjoying their retirement without having to perform circus tricks. The Bengali tigers have been rehomed in safari parks where they should be able

to enjoy the remainder of their lives being able to run around, do a little sunbathing and take a dip in their pools. Rescuing animals such as this is a complicated business as they cannot be homed in shelters or found adoptive homes as is the case with stray dogs and cats. Instead they must be very carefully placed in situations that are both receptive to them and an improvement on the

conditions they have already experienced. In this case it was the circus owner who looked for help in finding somewhere for the tigers to be taken care of once they had stopped working in the circus. The proprietor had already requested assistance from different zoos across the country but without success. The two tigers, Diana and Zita, have eventually been placed in ‘El Bosque’ in

Asturias and Willie and Ramón in Safari Aitana. They have been lucky and concern remains about where more animals might be placed in the future. There is no public government scheme that helps to provide for these animals and much reliance has been made on private charities and providers. The local government in Torrevieja prohibited the use of circus animals on

town hall property at the beginning of their administration. Previous to this it was common practice to see animals performing in a succession of circus shows, particularly in the summer. This has been good news for the four tigers but more needs to be done to ensure the future of other wild animals in similar circumstances. Suzanne O’Connell

2019 equine HMRC tax briefing today in Rojales fundraising calendar TODAY, 4th September, HMRC representatives from the UK are holding two sessions in Twelve stunning photographs of horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse and neglect feature in a new 2019 calendar launched by Spain’s Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre this week. The non-profit Rojales rescue centre – which has more than 120 equine residents and has saved 16 horses, ponies and donkeys this year alone – hopes the calendar sales will help raise funds to replace its deteriorating and costly internal fences. “Our internal fencing is currently made almost entirely of electric fence tape held up by plastic posts. While this type of fencing is safe for our horses, the electric tape deteriorates rapidly in the hot Spanish sun, requiring constant replacement,” centre co-founder Sue Weeding said. “Some cheeky horses have also learned to push over and snap the plastic posts. Each day, we replace anywhere from five to 10 broken plastic posts – and at €3 each, the cost quickly adds up.” The centre hopes to raise €5,000 to complete stage one of its internal fencing replacement project. For every three calendars sold, the centre will be able to purchase an entire metre of strong and permanent Tornado Wire fencing. The calendar features photos the centre’s horses, ponies and donkeys kindly taken and donated by photographer Elaine Warnock. Elaine said: “The 2019 calendar is a great way of raising awareness of how these animals have been previously treated and the photos are a testament to how they have been cared for and how beautiful they look today.”

the Alicante province to talk about tax issues, the local one being in Rojales at 11am.

The limited-edition calendar was designed by volunteer Koren Helbig, meaning almost every cent raised from sales goes straight to the internal fence fundraiser. The calendar costs just €15 and can be purchased at Easy Horse Care’s monthly open day or online from: www.easyhorsecare.net/shops/onlineshop/calendars/2019-rescued-equine-calendar for delivery or pick-up from the centre’s charity stores. Donations can also be made directly to the internal fencing fundraising campaign here: www.easyhorsecare.net/donate/help-build-fences. Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies entirely on donations to fund its important animal welfare work. Good-quality furniture donations are currently sought for the centre’s charity stores, which are low on stock. Anyone interested in making a donation or volunteering can call Sue on 652 021 980. Located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga, 59, the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre opens to the public on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. Visit www.easyhorsecare.net and follow us on Facebook at @EasyHorseCare.

As part of the British Government’s “Requirement to Correct” legislation UK taxpayers must make sure that all their foreign income and assets, where there might be tax to pay, have been declared to HMRC before 30th September 2018. From 1st October 2018, new, substantially higher penalties will apply for those who have failed to pay all the tax due on foreign income and assets. The vast majority of people and businesses pay the right amount of tax. The requirement to correct legislation is aimed at those who fail to pay tax on their offshore income or assets. However, many people may not realise that some straightforward actions, such as renting out a property Spain or transferring income and assets from one country to another, could mean having to pay tax in the UK. This includes having income from an asset in Spain or anywhere else in the world. These must all be declared to HMRC. HMRC is therefore urging people to check they have paid the right tax on their offshore assets, before tougher penalties are introduced from 1 October 2018. Although the Requirement to Correct applies to people who pay tax in the UK, it could still affect people if they live abroad and pay tax outside the UK, for example people who rent out their UK

home whilst living in Spain or another country. If you are concerned that you haven’t told HMRC about foreign income assets, or that you have transferred income abroad without paying the UK tax on it, you should make a disclosure to HMRC before 30th September 2018. You could also consider taking independent professional advice before deciding what to do next. These changes can affect more people than you may think, so seek advice if you are unable to make the meetings.

The details of the two sessions are: 4 September in Rojales Capitol Theatre Calle A. Gonzalez Vergel Rojales Time: 11:00am

4 September in Teulada-Moraira Edificio Espai La Senieta Avenida de Madrid 15 Teulada-Moraira Time: 5:00pm

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE REPRESENTATIVES WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GIVE ANY SPECIFIC ADVICE ON ISSUES RELATING TO SPANISH TAX. BRITISH CONSUL SARAH-JANE MORRIS WILL ALSO ATTEND BOTH EVENTS AS WELL AS REPRESENTATIVES FROM TEULADA AND ROJALES TOWN HALLS.

Marriage gone stale

He won’t leave

My husband and I have been married for 13 years. The last 8 or 9 have been unhappy, and I can’t see it getting any better. We’ve let things go on for too long this way. We both agree

My ex husband was dumped by the young girl he left me for. When he asked if he could crash on my sofa, I thought he wanted a full on relationship again, but he has now been sleeping at my house, rent free for the past three years. In all this time, he has continued to chase his ex-girlfriend, who is no longer interested, but takes his money, which was our money in the divorce settlement. I have now lost my job, and when I asked my ex-husband to contribute, he

something needs to change, but when comes to making a decision we find we are afraid of going it alone, and we just slip back in to the same miserable routine again. We don't hate each other, and there has never been any infidelity. Do you have any advice? You could try a short separation, say one month apart without contact and see how you feel. I think you could also benefit from some couples counselling. It may just be that your relationship has gone stale, but you need to find out if it could be revived. Talking to a professional and getting to the route of any problems within the marriage will enable you both to see what you really want. If you do decide you want to part, a counsellor will guide you towards achieving this.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE It was a slow start to the short week after the bank holiday. After some discontent over the Brexit guidance released by the government and rumblings of a leadership challenge by Boris Johnson for Theresa May’s position, there was finally some good news for the pound. EU negotiator Michel Barnier said that Britain could have a trade deal "such as there never has been". Investors took this to mean that it would be a good deal and they marked the pound higher. The pound was further supported by French president Emmanuel Macron, who suggested that he would use the EU summit meeting in Salzburg to argue for a deal with Britain. The French president is said to be uncomfortable about the potentially negative effect of a no-deal Brexit on the remaining 27. The response to these announcements was immediate, adding halfcent or more to the pound and sterling continued to move gently higher as the day progressed. Gains included one and a quarter euro cents, one and a half US cents and two and a quarter yen. In contrast, there was little news coming out of Europe that wasn’t Brexit-related. All three IFO measures of German business

confidence beat forecast, which was considered good news given the importance of German industry to Europe. In the US, there was little news from the Jackson Hole symposium in Wyoming but elsewhere there have been some significant announcements. The White House announced that it is close to finalising a trade agreement with Mexico – the immediate outcome was more positive for the greenback than the peso, which suggests that investors are not unreservedly impressed by the deal struck with Washington. Trump postponed further talks with China in the same week that it became clear that America's trade deficit did not narrow as a result of protectionist tariffs. The widest deficit in five months, with falling exports and rising imports, was attributed in part of the role of foodstuffs. There had been a rush to export soya beans, in particular, before the Chinese tariffs came in: business tailed off after they were applied. Despite this, the US Bureau of Economic Analysis revealed an upward revision to second quarter gross domestic product. Rather than the 4.0% forecast by economists, growth was an annualised 4.2%.

Just to go over what we have covered in the last few articles, jobs in the garden Make sure the planting of annuals, perennials, climbers and shrubs have all been done. Do not forget to continue to deadhead your plants throughout the summer. All plants/trees need to have water around their roots often, best early in morning and late afternoon/evening. As the fruit ripens, pick it, otherwise the wasps and other insects will get to them. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, as certain wasps will actually pollinate certain fruits for example the fig. However, fruit such as avocado are better off staying on the tree until such a time as needed for eating, as they can ripen very quickly in the heat and therefore go off. Vegetables should also

www.costablancapeople.com

have been planted by now as well as fruit.

Asarum (commonly known as Wild Ginger) Asarum originally came from Asia and have kidney-shaped leaves with small red/brown flowers. It has its nickname due to the rhizome not only smelling but also tasting of ginger root, but the two are not related.

Bulbine frutescens Bulbine frutescens is rather a misleading name, as they do not have a bulbous base. They are mainly dormant in the summer, blooming in the spring and then again later in the autumn although not as fully. They can be propagated easily through stem cuttings, which can be planted immediately in a shaded area. They can build strong roots in only a couple of months with no extra care or treatment given.

Campanula (Bellflower) Asarum (commonly known as Wild Ginger)

With over 500 species it would take

too much room to go in to any detail of these plants but the basics are that their flowers are bell shaped, hence the common name for them, with leaves varying in shape but broader nearer the base of the plant and narrowing nearer the top.

Dorycnium hirsutum (Hairy Canary Clover) This is a perennial plant belonging to the genus Dorycnium of the Fabaceae family. It reaches an average of 20-50 centimetres in height. It has silver fuzzy leaves and the flowers are white veined pinkishred. It flowers from May through to July May is a lovely time of year when so many different colours show up in the garden; even basic gardens like to show off with many bulbs and herbs showing their blooms. Roses will be beginning to show the reasons why they are so popular along with geraniums, bougainvilleas and hibiscus. It is also the time to visit the garden centres, but check around your garden first and make notes of the types of plants you want, that way you will be able to get what is needed rather than pretty plants that may not take to your ground/soil etc. Marc Vijverberg

Welcome to Navajo Nation Parks with Vivalia Travel

M

onument Valley is a Navajo Tribal Park (30,000 acres) established in 1958 and located on the border of Arizona and Utah with in the 16 million-acre Navajo Reservation. The Park is about 5,500 feet above seal level and accessible year-round. Temperatures range from an average low of 25 degrees F in the winter to an average high of 90 degrees F in the summer. Rainfall averages eight inches/year. Monument valley is located on US Highway 163 and is 25 miles from Mexican Hat, UT, 51 miles from Bluff, UT and 77 miles from Blanding, UT. It is also 22 miles from Kayenta, AZ and 121 miles from Page, AZ. Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation oversees all Navajo Tribal Parks on the Navajo Nation Reservation. The Navajo Nation is compromised of essentially private lands, therefore all non-Navajo travelers and visitors must abide by and comply with the laws, regulations, and policies promulgated by the Navajo Nation Government, including

those governing Navajo Tribal Parks, Monuments, and recreation areas. As you visit the Navajo Tribal Parks, we ask that you keep our Mother Earth clean and place all debris and trash in the trash receptacles. The Mission of the Navajo Parks & Recreation Department is to protect, preserve and manage tribal parks, monuments and recreation areas for the perpetual enjoyment and benefit of the Navajo Nation – the spectacular landscapes, buttes, canyons, clean air, diversity of plants and wildlife, and areas of beauty and solitude. Before human existence, the Park was once a lowland basin. For hundreds of millions of years, materials that eroded from the early Rock Mountains deposited layer upon layer of sediment which cemented a slow and gentle uplift, generated by ceaseless pressure from below the surface, elevating these horizontal strata quite uniformly one to three miles above sea level. What was once a basin became a plateau.

Natural forces of wind and water that eroded the land spent the last 50 million years cutting into and peeling away at the surface of the plateau. The simple wearing down of altering layers of soft and hard rock slowly revealed the natural wonders of Monument Valley today. From the visitor center, you see the world-famous panorama of the Mitten Buttes and Merrick Butte. You can also purchase guided tours from Navajo tour operators, who take you down into the valley in Jeeps for a narrated cruise through these mythical formations. Places such as Ear of the Wind and other landmarks can only be accessed via guided tours. During the summer months, the visitor center also features Haskenneini Restaurant, which specializes in both native Navajo and American cuisines, and a film/snack/souvenir shop. There are year-round restroom facilities. One mile before the center, numerous Navajo vendors sell arts, crafts, native food, and souvenirs at roadside stands.

Mobile battery explodes causing house fire

Asturias cheese sells for €14,300 at auction

An exploding mobile phone battery caused a fire in a Granada-province home and the family wants to warn the public about leaving their mobile phone handsets on charge. The Samsung mobile was in the lounge at the property in Las Gabias, plugged in, when its 12year-old owner and his parents were awoken by a loud bang. They found the sofa on fire, but luckily managed to put it out by themselves without needing to call emergency

A restaurant in Asturias has made a record-breaking bid for a chunk of locally-produced cheese – a 'wheel' of Cabrales has reached the eye-watering sum of €14,300 at auction. Although the cheese, produced by the dairy firm Valfriu, 'only' started at €1,000, the battle between 15 restaurants saw the price sky-rocket within seconds. One of the most sought-after varieties of cheese, the Cabrales frequently nets impossible-sounding sums at auction, although this year, the eatery El Llagar de Colloto, in Oviedo, has paid four times the

services. “It was the noise that woke us up,” the boy's father told a local newspaper. “Had it not been for the noise, the fire would certainly have spread throughout the house – and we were inside, asleep. “But thank goodness it was in the lounge when it exploded and not in our son's room.” The phone is two years old and was plugged in using the original charger it came with, the boy's parents said.

final figure an identical piece sold at in 2017. This said, the sum normally bid for a 'wheel' of Cabrales is less than the huge amounts the equally-highly prized Idiazabal cheese usually fetches. Last year, half a 'wheel' of Idiazabal fetched €8,000, although another samesized piece auctioned in Navarra and bought by celebrity chef Leandro Gil went for a 'mere' €4,550. Until now, the highest-ever sum paid for a full 'wheel' of Cabrales was €11,000, which was in 2011.

5 EASY STEPS TO SELL YOUR IN SPAIN

Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain – Property TV – Sky Channel 189.

I

t really is much easier than you think, when it comes to selling your property in Spain. Follow these 5 easy steps, and you’ll enjoy a stress free sale in no time:

1. Have your documents at the ready. You’ll need: The Escritura (Title Deeds) And don’t panic if you can’t find the original. You can always go back to the Notary where you signed and request a duplicate. On some occasions, you can sell with just a Land Registry Search. . N.I.E. Certificates And/Or Residencia Paper/Card. If you can’t find them and have been registered with the Spanish Inland Revenue, you don’t need to apply for a duplicate, you just need to request your Tax Labels “Etiquetas.” If you are a “fiscal resident” of Spain, then you will need to apply for your Fiscal Residency Certificate, as this is the only way you will be recognized a tax resident. . Habitation Certificate. This is obtained from the Town Hall, through a local Architect. . Energy Efficiency Certificate. This too is obtained from an Architect. . A utility receipt for: Water, Electric, Gas, Community Fees. . Latest Suma receipt. This is the equivalent of the

Council Tax. . For the day of completion, you will need your original Passport, as proof of identity. 2. If you’re intentions are to transfer your funds back to the U.K., after you’ve completed your sale, speak to a currency company like MoneyCorp as far in advance as possible, as you will need to set up an account with them. They will be able to offer you a much better deal than the local banks, to move your money back. The local banks charge extortionate fees for depositing bankers drafts, so make sure you either negotiate, negotiate, negotiate… (did I say negotiate?) I mean NEGOTIATE with them, or use a highly reputable currency company. You’ll be glad you did. 3. Once you are close to your completion date, go to your local bank to stop all direct debits. You’ll want to do this, just a couple of days in advance of the big day. 4. Organize the removal of your furnishings and/or personal effects. If you need boxes, go to the local supermarkets. They usually leave their unwanted boxes outside. I’m sure you’ve seen them! 5. If you can’t be in Spain for completion, leave Power Of Attorney to sell, with your trusted Lawyer. Bear in mind, costings do vary from Lawyer to Lawyer, so just for guidance, the fees should be around €500 per couple. This includes Notary Fees. So there you have it…. Simple! But most importantly is not to stress out, about your impending move, and go with the flow! Selling your home? Enjoy the journey! Spanish government allocates more than Could Spain’s thriving €540,000 to fight Puigdemont lawsuit tourism industry be The Spanish Justice Ministry has hired the services of a Belgian law firm to defend Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena against a civil lawsuit filed by ousted Catalan premier Carles Puigdemont and four former regional deputies. Under the terms of the contract, the government is expected to pay up to €450,413.22, plus €94,568.78 in taxes – a total of €544,982. Legal sources say that this amount would cover the cost of fighting the lawsuit for a few months but if the complaint is thrown out by the Belgian court, the final fee will be significantly lower. Llarena has been heading up the main judicial probe into the actions of Puigdemont and other proindependence politicians last year, when the regional government held an illegal referendum on Catalonia’s secession from Spain, before unilaterally declaring independence in parliament. Puigdemont and several of his colleagues were ousted from their roles and fled Spain, and are still wanted for extradition. Other pro-independence leaders and politicians, meanwhile, were arrested and are currently in pre-trial custody without bail, a decision taken by the Spanish courts on the basis that they may reoffend or indeed flee the country as their colleagues had. The lawsuit that Puigdemont and his lawyers have filed against the magistrate accuses Llarena of being impartial and states that Spain is “next to Kazakhstan among delinquent states that refuse to comply with the principles that govern universal fundamental rights.” Puigdemont’s lawyers argue that public comments made by Llarena violated the ousted politicians’ right to a fair trial and the presumption of

innocence. The lawsuit points to an instance on February 22 when the magistrate said the pro-independence leaders currently in pre-trial detention were not “political prisoners” and claim that Llarena showed prejudice by expressing opinions outside of the court. “We ask the Belgian court to confirm the civil penalty against Judge Llarena for violating the presumption of innocence, and confirm the harm this has caused,” said one of the members of Puigdemont’s legal team. The lawyers say Belgian courts have the jurisdiction to hear the case because they were in the country when Llarena made the comments. Llarena will have to travel to Belgium to appear in court on September 4. Puigdemont is demanding a symbolic payment of one euro from the judge should he win the case. A victory in the case could force Judge Llarena to step aside from the sedition probe. Legal sources say Llarena will be represented by Hakim Boularbah, a specialist in private international law. According to the Justice Ministry, the legal defense strategy will be overseen by the state’s legal council, led by Consuelo Castro. In a press release, the ministry said the goal is to “defend the sovereignty and jurisdictional immunity of the Spanish justice system before the Belgian courts.” Warning The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has warned Catalan premier Quim Torra against his alleged plans to launch another separatist drive on the anniversary of the illegal referendum on Catalan independence on October 1. Speaking at a press conference in Colombia during his diplomatic tour of Latin America, Sánchez said Torra “knows

perfectly well the path that would result from unilateral actions, and the breaking and disregard of the rule of law,” referring to the application of Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution. After the illegal referendum of October 1, 2017 and the unilateral declaration of independence that followed, the central government of former PM Mariano Rajoy invoked emergency measures to suspended autonomous powers in the breakaway region using that clause from Spain’s Magna Carta. “The government is willing to speak with the regional government within the law,” said Sánchez, who added that “politics should be at the service of social harmony.” Torra replied to Sánchez’s comment on Twitter, writing: “Dear prime minister, I thought I had understood that we were going to find a political solution to a political problem. You will always find us on the path that obeys the people of Catalonia, dialogue, social harmony and non-violence.”

coming to a standstill?

In 2017, Spain received a recordbreaking number of tourists with 82 million people visiting the country. Of this figure, more than half – 42 million – came from Spain’s biggest tourist markets: the United Kingdom, Germany and France. But a new report from the Spanish Institute of Tourism (Turespaña) is predicting that these markets will experience “only moderate growth” or even a “decline or stagnation” in the third quarter, the most important of the year. According to the Outlook Report for International Tourism published this month, tourist arrivals are expected to experience “moderate or stagnate growth,” tourist spending “moderate growth” and overnight stays a “decline or stagnation.” The final outcome will depend on Spain’s biggest tourist markets but these have the “least promising” forecasts. German tourists, for instance, are expected to make 5.1 percent fewer overnight stays, despite a 3.1 percent increase in arrivals and 2.4 percent rise in spending. Turespaña estimates the number of British tourists will fall 4.2 percent in the third quarter but predicts a rise of 5.3 percent in tourist spending and 1.9 percent in overnight stays. The outcome for France is more positive, with tourist visits expected to

increase 5.7 percent, spending by 8.1 percent and overnight stays by 5 percent. Overall, Turespaña has forecast visitors will rise by 2.4 percent, spending by 5.3 percent and 1.1 percent in overnight stays. Turespaña’s predictions, however, have missed the mark before. In July, it estimated that there would be 29.4 million overnight stays in Spain. But according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the figure was 28.5 million – almost a million fewer than what was forecast. This represents a fall of 11.4 percent from German tourists and a 2.5 percent drop in the British market. The INE has not yet published its results on tourist arrivals and spending in July. But according to the report from the first quarter of 2018, German tourist visits fell by 5.1 percent to 5.1 million and spent €5.2 billion – a drop of 3.15 percent less. British tourists dropped by 2 percent to 8.4 million and spent €7.7 billion, a rise of 1.16 percent, compared to the 14.56 percent rise in the first half of last year. Around 4.8 million French people visited Spain in the first quarter, indicating moderate growth of just 1.43 percent. Spending increased by 3.9 percent to €2.9 billion, which was less than half of the 8.49 percent growth recorded in June, 2017.

in which to place their lone, terroristdefying heroes. They’ve given us Die Hard on a bus, a boat, a train, a plane, and even the White House. Now comes Die Hard in a football stadium. On this occasion, the wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time is Dave Bautista’s Michael Knox, an ex-militaryman Yank who just happens to be taking a dead comrade’s gobby teenage daughter (Lara Peake) to watch West Ham’s final game at Upton Park when heavily armed terrorists seize control of the stadium. Fanatical separatists from the fictional Russian republic of Sekovia, the bad guys have every eventuality covered – save for the appearance of Bautista’s hard-nut hero. Final Score scrupulously follows the Die Hard playbook. It has the confined space and the good guy with a special set of skills, a ticking-clock deadline – the game’s 90 minutes, naturally – and someone the protagonist cares about among the potential victims. It also gives us the civilian sidekick – here Amit Shah’s goofy stadium steward Faisal – and the loose cannon member of the terror gang who gets enraged after the hero kills someone dear to her. You will be able to tick off half-a-dozen other examples yourselves.

Bicycle use reduces heart attack risk

S

pecialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja believe that using a bicycle improves the immune system and prevents back and joint pain. Riding a bicycle reduces the risk of suffering a heart attack, according to specialists at the Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja. The use of a bicycle has several important health benefits, says Doctor Juan Luján, a specialist in cardiology at the Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja: “It is one of the most complete activities that helps to prevent back pain, protects the joints and improves the circulatory and immunological system, as well as maintaining good mental health.” According to a survey by the Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU, Spanish acronym for the Organisation for Consumers and Users), the number of people using a bicycle more than once a week has grown in the past four years, to 47 percent. In addition, the number of people riding a bicycle to work has doubled, going from 6.8 percent to 11.9 percent, according to the latest Barómetro de la Bicicleta [Bicycle Barometer] issued by the Dirección General de Tráfico [General Transit Department].

Cycling is an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise, with a very low risk of injury. Doctor Juan Luján, says: “In physical medicine and rehabilitation, it has been proven that cardiovascular exercise on a bicycle lowers the risk of heart attack, since it promotes an improved resistance to insulin, lowers blood pressure, increases the contractile capacity of the thorax and promotes a significant improvement in the balance of lipids in the body, lowering bad (LDL, Lipoprotein A) and raising good cholesterol (HDL).” When riding a bicycle, we exercise the upper and lower parts of the body, performing a very complete workout, which is particularly indicated for people with weight problems or cardiovascular diseases. Below, are some of the benefits of switching to two wheels: More Pedalling, Less Heart Attacks Riding a bicycle lowers the risk of heart attack by 50%: cycling raises your heart rate and lowers your blood pressure, so the heart saves resources. In addition, it lowers bad cholesterol, while increasing the amount of good cholesterol, which protects our blood vessels. Therefore,

blood vessel flexibility improves, plaque accumulation becomes less frequent, and the risk of artery calcification is lowered. A Good Posture prevents Back Pain Depending on the type of bicycle we use, we must choose the recommended posture. The bicycle seat is our weightbearing point so, depending on what height we adjust the seat at, we will not only be more comfortable, but benefit our back as well. In general, we recommend adjusting the seat so our body is leaning forward, so that the back muscles are engaged and the core stabilised. Cycling strengthens the lumbar region and prevents the appearance of herniated discs. Exercised and Protected Joints Some cardio exercises, such as running, overload the joints, especially the knees. On a bicycle, however, 70-80 percent of the body’s weight is supported by the seat. This way, the joints exercise, but they are protected from harsh impacts and overloading. When the joints work under low pressure, energy and nutrition can be spread to the cartilage more easily. These long-term benefits prevent arthrosis. A Stronger Immune System

Cycling favours the mobilisation of phagocytes, the cells that devour bacteria in our body. This mobilisation also aids the destruction of bacteria and cancer cells, which makes it a good therapeutic complement for cancer and AIDS patients. A Small Effort with a Large Reward It’s not necessary to invest too much time to feel the results of cycling on your body. With only 10 minutes of cycling a day, you can feel the results at a muscular level, in your blood flow and in your joints. With 30 minutes, you can feel heart benefits, and 50 minutes stimulate the fatty acid metabolism. A Healthier Mind When cycling, the brain’s oxygenation improves and it produces more endorphins, “the happiness hormones”, which are produced in greater amount during exercise. In addition, it has been proven that people who ride bicycles suffer less from depression and other psychological conditions. Man left seriously injured by massive ball A 29-year-old man was left seriously injured after he was knocked into a fence during the so-called “boloencierro,” a bull run that, instead of an animal, features a 250-kilo Styrofoam ball. The victim suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital from the fiestas in the Madrid town of Mataelpino. The accident took place at 12.20pm, after the child’s version of the boloencierro had taken place. As has been tradition for the last seven years in Mataelpino, the ball was released, with attendees of the fiestas running through the street toward the bullring being followed by the massive rolling object. According to reports from the scene, the man stopped outside the bullring and was smashed into the fence by the ball. Emergency services stabilised and intubated the man, before he was taken to hospital by helicopter. The Mayor of Mataelpino, Javier de los

Nietos of the Socialist Party (PSOE), explained that the man was wearing appropriate footwear and was in conditions to take part in the curious ball run, but that accidents can happen during the event, despite greater efforts to make the boliencierro safer this year after two injuries last year, one of which was serious. “If anyone tries to stop the ball or gets distracted, it can knock you off your feet,” the mayor explained. “It won’t crush you. In fact, when it has rolled over people they’ve been absolutely fine.” The town of Mataelpino, which has 1,800 inhabitants and is located at the feet of the Guadarrama mountains, 50 kilometers from Madrid, replaced traditional bull runs through the streets with the boliencierro eight years ago, when public funding for the fiestas was cut, and has repeated the popular event every year since.

case went no further. It has now been revealed that he has a history of abusing children. Shortly after the death of Nicky Verstappen, he was seen near where the body was found. Three years later, Brech admitted that he had been treated “for having committed sexual abuses.” In 2002, he left the Boy Scouts, where he had been working. He also worked in a kindergarten. The Nicky Verstappen case has been kept in the headlines thanks to the work of Peter R. Vries, a Dutch reporter specialising in unsolved cases and who regularly mentioned the crime on his TV show. “Without his help, we never would have got this far,” the victim’s mother said. “He has been a huge support for us and he has always been there, even during vacations.” The Dutch police have requested that their Spanish colleagues hand over the suspect so that he can stand trial.

Infamous Dutch murder could be solved with Spanish arrest

The arrest of 55-year-old Dutch national Jos Brech in Barcelona recently could see the most famous unsolved case in Holland brought to a conclusion. In 1998, 11-year-old Nicky Verstappen was taken from the tent where he was sleeping during a summer camp in Limburg, in the south of Holland. He was sexually abused and his body was found the following day. His family have vowed not to let the crime be forgotten and the police got a new lead this year after taking DNA samples from 15,000 people in search of a suspect. A match was found with a relative of Brech, who had been

missing since April. The Spanish police located the man close to the town of Castellterçol, around 50 kilometres from Barcelona, “in a tent next to a house that was used as a kind of commune,” they explained. Brech was located after a Dutch man recognised him from photos made public by the police in Holland last week. They had spoken several times and he had no doubt that it was him, officers explained. He was arrested when he went to chop wood, and has since been placed in custody without bail, and has accepted his extradition to Holland. Brech, who is an expert at survival in hostile environments, has lived in a number of different forests since he went missing. His last known residence was a house in Los Vosgos, France. He was not located there, but detectives found his belongings and found a DNA match. Brech was interviewed by the police in 1985 for an alleged sexual assault, but the

Research (CSIC) says the main benefits from the EU’s ban on halogen bulbs are in life-span and consumption. Although LED and halogen bulbs are not very different to each other in the way they work, the material used is not the same – LED bulbs have a halogen gas inside, typically bromide or iodine, which means they need far less electricity to function. And they last longer than nonLED bulbs, making them more economical long-term even though they have historically cost more. But Perpiña warns that any type of bulb creates waste when it is no longer in use. It is largely for this reason, Perpiña says, that the EU has banned halogen bulbs, since they have a shorter lifespan and clog up landfill sites much more quickly. The cost of recycling even LED bulbs can never be completely clawed back, even though they are more expensive to buy, Perpiña says. He assures that the bromide and iodine inside LED bulbs is not enough to cause damage to the environment if they

are handled incorrectly or not treated properly when they become waste, and says the substance does not harm the ozone layer. Retailers will be able to continue selling non-LED bulbs they have in stock, but will be unable to order any more. Those due to be banned are classic halogen bulbs made from glass which emit light in several directions and come in E27 or E14 casings, plus nondirectional light-emitting bulbs with G4 and GY6.35 casings. According to research by LEDVANCE, however, one in two consumers in the EU is unaware of the upcoming non-LED lightbulb ban, and two-thirds are unaware of the consequences of the prohibition. As many as a third of those interviewed still include halogen and other non-LED bulbs on their shopping lists. The ban is likely to see a high number of LED alternatives appear on the market that replace the function of halogen bulbs, but which are more energy-efficient.

Spain welcomes forthcoming non-LED halogen bulb ban in EU Halogen lightbulbs’ days are numbered in the European Union – from 1 September, they may no longer be manufactured or sold and only LED bulbs will be found in the shops. Spanish environmental campaigners Ecologists in Action has welcomed the move, calling it great news, but says it is only a small step towards cutting power pollution. Head of energy Javier Andaluz says lightbulbs are only a minor part of household energy consumption and that other elements, such as large electrical appliances, are much more polluting. “If you pick up a total household electricity bill, you’ll see that the washing machine or the heating causes more pollution than a lightbulb,” Andaluz argues. He advocates renewable sources such as solar panels for each and every house to reduce energy impact and climate change. PRESSURE BUILDS ON PM TO TAKE STAND AGAINST INDEPENDENCE SYMBOLS IN CATALONIA The Spanish government of Socialist Party (PSOE) Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is being pressured to take a stand in the ongoing row over pro-independence symbols in Catalonia. The conservative Popular Party (PP) and centre-right Ciudadanos have called on the government to ban the yellow ribbons, an emblem of support for jailed pro-independence leaders, from all public spaces. PP leader Pablo Casado has said that the government must “put an end” to the public display of yellow ribbons, arguing the symbols “insult democracy and the rule of law.” Speaking in Congress, Casado said he also wants politicians to stop wearing the yellow ribbon on formal clothing inside official institutions. “Even in (Madrid prime ministerial palace) La Moncloa, (Quim) Torra entered with a yellow ribbon, with an emblem that is meant to say Spain is not a democracy and that our state has political prisoners,” he said, in reference to a recent meeting between the Spanish PM and the Catalan regional premier.

“It’s inconceivable for someone to enter the La Moncloa palace with an emblem that insults our democracy and rule of law,” he added. When asked about his thoughts on Catalan politicians who wear a yellow ribbon inside the regional parliament, Casado said: “It’s an assault on the freedom and democracy of Spain, and the government is neglecting its duties.” Meanwhile, the leader of Ciudadanos Albert Rivera has demanded the government take down all yellow ribbons from the streets of Catalonia, claiming the symbols are “illegal, unlawful and ideological.” “I don’t care how they do it but that they do it,” he said. Ribbons of varying sizes have been appearing all over the north-eastern Spanish region for months now, placed by supporters of independence for Catalonia from Spain. Those in favour of the ongoing unity of the country, however, have been removing them – in some cases in an organised and systematic manner. The symbols represent support for the

former heads of pro-independence associations Jordi Sànchez and Jordi Cuixart, and politicians such as former Catalan Republican Left (ERC) leader, Oriol Junqueras, who, along with several other key figures from the previous regional government, have been in pre-trial custody since November for their role in the passing of last year’s unilateral declaration of independence in the Catalan regional parliament. The dispute over the symbol has intensified this summer with Ciudadanos and other organizations launching a series of actions to encourage people to remove pro-independence symbols from public spaces. Spanish prosecutors drawn into controversy With the yellow ribbons sparking an increasing number of altercations between supporters and detractors of independence, Spanish prosecutors have stepped in to investigate how local police and Catalonia’s regional police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, are managing

the conflict. On Monday, prosecutors opened a case into a complaint filed by the association Impulso Ciudadano into why the Mossos and local police have identified people who were taking down pro-independence symbols. The complaint refers to two specific incidents: one on August 17 when the Mossos intercepted 14 people equipped with tools to take down symbols in Tarragona, one of whom was a Civil Guard officer; and one on August 24, when local police, in collaboration with the Mossos,

identified and reported eight people for defacing a yellow ribbon. Impulso Ciudadano argues the police acted “arbitrarily, without legal foundations and in a discriminatory way for ideological reasons.” Catalan premier Quim Torra has criticised the investigation and thrown his support behind the Mossos. “They did their job correctly, any police force would act the same way before a group that works at night with knives,” he said.

TOUR GUIDE THREATENED WITH HUGE FINE BY VALENCIA Susana Meseguer knows that in Vilafamés, the village in Castellón (Valencia) where she lives, there are 13 niches, each one with its own story, and that in the past served as street lights. She also knows that the castle that dominates the village has a well-preserved Carlist tower. She knows a lot of things about Vilafamés, and she is passionate when she starts to explain them - but she is not a tourist guide. Nor does she want to be one. In May she ended up without a job, so she signed up to the online platform GuruWalk, which brings together tourists and tour guides all over the world. The latter offer their services in exchange for tips from the former. But the Valencia regional government got wind of what Meseguer was doing and on 19th July it sent her a letter reminding her that tour guides in the region need authorisation, and that she didn’t have it. They warned her that she had to cease the activity or face a possible fine of between €100,000 and €600,000. GuruWalk is not the first online application to have received a less than warm

welcome in Spain. Transport service Uber has been mired in legal battles filed by taxi associations since it began operating in the country, while many local authorities have vowed to restrict the number of apartments rented out via tourist accommodation websites such as Airbnb. Official tour guide groups have stated that GuruWalk, which is a Valencia-based site, is degrading the profession Meseguer, 50, says that she has found “her place in the world in Vilafamés,” but has succumbed to the pressure from the regional government and has left the GuruWalk platform, removing the cards that she had left in the tourist office in the village advertising her services. The regional government has been informed, in a bid to halt the administrative process against her. But she denies some of the claims made in the letter she was sent. “I was not doing tours from 9am to 9pm every day, as they said, it was a sporadic thing, some weekends, as a hobby, because I love my village,” she says in a telephone conversation. “I liked the walks where I would

explain information and tell stories, and I would always warn that I was not an official guide. The most I ever made was around €60 in one month. If they had called me I would have cleared everything up, but they never did.” She also claims that the local council and the tourist office knew what she was doing, and that the person in charge of the tourist office had even sent her groups when they couldn’t leave their post. Reported Meseguer suspects that someone may have reported her to the authorities, but sources from the regional government say that her activity was detected as part of a campaign to prevent intrusion in the tourist sector, which includes the monitoring of tourist apartments. The same sources add that if the person found to be operating without the proper authorisations can show that they have ceased their activities, fines are not imposed. The tour that Meseguer was offering

is now not available on GuruWalk, despite the very positive reviews that users had left. She complains that she cannot now continue to share her “excitement to spread the word about what we have here in Vilafamés.” The incident has, however, encouraged her to set up a new business offering the hire of electric bicycles with GPS that can be used to visit the “unknown

countryside around Vilafamés.” You can sense her passion once again, as she talks about it being “beautiful, a little Tuscany,” “with a microclimate and a creeping olive tree,” as well as the cave that was a “refuge for 800 people in the Civil War,” and the waterwheels that are dotted around the village.

Cocaine-stuffed pineapples seized Spanish police have announced that they have seized 67 kilogrammes (148 pounds) of cocaine found inside dozens of hollowed-out pineapples at Madrid’s main wholesale fruit and vegetable market. The drug-stuffed fruits were found at the sprawling Mercamadrid market among a shipment of pineapples that arrived in the Portuguese port of Setubal by ship from Costa Rica and was then transported overland to the Spanish capital, police said in a statement. Each pineapple was “perfectly hallowed out and stuffed with compact cylinders” containing 800-1,000 grammes of cocaine and was coated with wax or yellow paraffin to conceal the “odours of the chemical products which the drug

contains and avoid its detection”, the statement said. Police arrested seven people as part of the operation — three in Madrid and four in Barcelona — who are suspected of playing a role in the cocaine smuggling operation. Spain, with its historic and linguistic links to South America, is the main entry point to Europe for cocaine from the continent, mostly from Colombia. Smugglers often resort to creative methods to get drugs past Spanish customs. In recent years, police have found cocaine inside breast implants, a wig, a wheelchair cushion, a plaster cast encasing a man’s broken leg as well as inside a 42-piece crockery set.

CALL FOR HERBICIDE BAN

The Green Party in Spain is calling for a ban on monsanto-developed herbicide linked to cancer. The Equo Party is demanding an immediate ban on the herbicide Glyphosate which has been linked to terminal cancer. The call comes after American courts ordered the manufacturer to compensate a victim who fell prey to the disease after exposure to the product. Developed in the 1970s by Monsanto, now owned by pharmaceutical giant Bayer, Glyphosate has been denounced on multiple occasions due to its negative effects on the environment and human health. Based on official government data, ecologists claim that at least one of Spain’s three major rivers is contaminated with the substance. Equo pointed to Bayer’s difficulty in getting its manufacturing licence renewed in Europe.

“It’s no coincidence that the European Parliament blocked Monsanto which has been accused of interfering with scientific reports about Glyphosate”. However the European Commission maintains that use of the herbicide in the EU is based on scientific evidence, adding that every country is free to use it or ban it as they choose. Carlos Vicent, Bayer’s Spain and Portugal spokesman, commented: “The court’s decision doesn’t change the fact that more than 800 scientific research reports state that Glyphosate doesn’t cause cancer”.

Ryanair is changing its cabin bag policy ... again! Ryanair is changing its cabin luggage policy for the second time this year, and it could leave you £8 (€9) worse off. Currently, only priority boarding passengers can bring two bags into the cabin for free, while non-priority passengers can take one small bag into the cabin and have a second bag put in the hold for free. But from 1st November, those who aren’t priority boarders will have to pay extra if they want a second bag at all; in fact, you’ll need to fork out £8 (€9) for a bag up to 10kg. If you already wanted to check in a second bag, the change will mean you’ll be able to pay £8 for a bag up of to 10kg instead of the usual £25 for a bag of up to 20kg. If you did not plan for a second bag, non-priority passengers will have to either pay the extra £6 for priority boarding (£8 if you choose to add this to your booking later), or pay £8 to get it checked into the hold - or just stick with one small bag. The changes will take effect even if you have already booked your flight meaning you will have to fork out the extra for your second bag from November onwards. The airline put the change down to the number of people turning up at the gate with a second bag to place in the hold for free, which they say can cause delays of approximately 25 minutes. Ryanair’s Kenny Jacobs said: “From November 2018, we are introducing a new lower cost 10kg checked bag and changing our carry-on bag policy to eliminate boarding/flight delays. “Priority Boarding customers will continue to enjoy two free carry-on bags. All other (non-priority) customers will be allowed one free (small) carry-on bag and those who wish to check in a second

bigger 10kg bag can do from €9/£8 at the time of booking. “This new policy will speed up the boarding and cut flight delays. 60 percent of customers will be unaffected by these changes and we expect that the other 40 percent will either choose to buy Priority Boarding or a 10kg check bag or will choose to travel with only one (free) small bag as 30 percent already do so today.” In response, consumer giant FACUA has called for action, urging Spain’s Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure to intervene. The organisation says it looks like an attempt to recover costs incurred in compensation payments to passengers arising through the strikes. Pilots in Ireland and Germany and cabin crew in Spain, Italy, Belgium and Portugal have staged various strikes this summer, leading to thousands of passengers having to be booked onto new flights or refunded, plus being paid the €250 mandatory compensation for delays of more than three hours or cancellations. Ryanair claims the hand-luggage charge is to reduce delays in boarding – even though hold bags are tagged whilst passengers are standing in a queue for passport control and are merely passed to

luggage handlers on the runway. Generally, the large hand-luggage bags are boarded before all passengers have settled in their seats. Excuse FACUA says it does not buy this excuse and says it is clear the company wants to apply charges to customers rather than taking on more staff to make the boarding process swifter. The organisation has also criticised Ryanair for charging passengers who had already booked their flights for November onwards before the rule was announced. FACUA has also called for a reform to airline industry regulations to stop the ever-growing trend of charging passengers for extras that should be included in the price of the ticket – an issue which affects many carriers, not just Ryanair. “Airlines are devaluating their level of services for trips purchased in order sell add-ons as basic and necessary as being able to sit next to your travelling companion, check in online several days before flying, travelling with suitcases and bringing on board a reasonable-sized bag,” FACUA complains.

Cornellá 'terrorist' was 'good, kind and loving', says ex-wife The ex-wife of a 'terrorist' shot dead when he staged a knife attack on a Catalunya police station says he was 'a good man', 'very kind' and 'loving'. Luciana Morales, who converted to Islam when she married Algerian expat Abdelouahab Taib, 29, sent an open letter to the media calling for 'respect' for the deceased. “He's not all those horrendous things I've been reading about,” Sra Morales insisted. Taib burst into the Mossos d'Esquadra station three blocks away from his home in Cornellà de Llobregat, in Barcelona province a week ago, brandishing a knife and shouting Allahu Akbar ('God is great'), a standard greeting and prayer call in Islam which has been hijacked by ISIS terrorists and announced just before they let off suicide bomb vests, open fire or detonate explosives. The female officer on duty said she genuinely feared for her life and was in no doubt Taib intended to kill her. She was forced to shoot to kill, and needed counselling afterwards. “He was a good man and he liked to help everyone else, but he was going through a very bad time,” Luciana says. “[Abdelouahab] was very loving and for me, he was, and always will be, someone very special. “He was the only person who

has ever really got to know me or understood me; he loved his family and friends above everything else – but he was nothing like what people have been saying about him in the last week.” Sra Morales signed off the letter with her Arab name, Amina, after urging the public to remember Taib 'as he really was – a loving and humble person'. She says this is the only time she has ever written to the media. Although the Mossos d'Esquadra are treating Taib's actions as terrorism, Luciana's explanations appear to reveal a deeper and more personal motive. Taib knew he was gay, according to Luciana's reported statement to police after the attack, and had told her over a year ago. It is believed this is why they divorced just a fortnight before his death. He knew his homosexuality would lead to his being rejected by the Muslim community and cut off from his family and friends, and felt suicidal. It is believed the knife 'attack' was entirely staged, as he knew the police were likely to shoot him, thus achieving his aim of committing suicide without having to do so by his own hand, as this is forbidden in Islam. The policewoman may not have been in any real danger, but Taib wanted to make her think she was so she would open fire.

As Luciana and Taib were divorced, she cannot be a party to the court case, although she is seeking compensation from the police to cover the cost of repairing her front door, which they smashed down when searching her house, and also for the return of items confiscated from her home for the investigation, including computer equipment. Taib's family has brought a private prosecution against the police for his death, although the Mossos insist their officer acted appropriately in the circumstances. Police inquiries have found no link between Taib and any terror organisation, nor any evidence of his becoming 'radicalised', and he has no criminal history.

Carnival Time in Hondón

One of the highlights of Fiesta time in the village of Hondón de los Frailes is Carnival and last Saturday saw an evening full of music from local bands, lights, colourful costumes, ingenuity, applause and above all FUN! With over 20 floats the procession took well over two hours to traverse the narrow streets. One of the floats was designed and beautifully decorated by members of DIVA (Drama in the (Hondón) Valley Association) a recently formed drama group. Their theme was Alice in Wonderland. All the wonderful colourful costumes were designed and handmade by the extremely talented seamstresses and the "cast" drew much applause from those who lined the streets to see the parade. Our photos show a number of the participants in their fantastic costumes. Although feeling slightly tired at the end of the procession – everyone felt elated by the whole experience. (“What shall we do next year” was heard at the end of the evening!) To find out more about DIVA, please contact hondondivas@gmail.com we are looking for new members to join us and take part in a future local production. We are not only seeking budding actors and actresses but others with expertise for behind the scenes roles.

Costa Blanca tennis ace to retire from tennis Costa Blanca tennis ace David Ferrer has announced he will retire from the ATP circuit in 2019 and that his forthcoming match against compatriot Rafa Nadal at the US Open will be his last-ever Grand Slam. Ferrer, 36, from Jávea – who reached world number three twice in 2013 – says next year he will play a few games on the circuit before hanging up his racquet for good. “I want to leave by playing the Hopman Cup, Auckland, Buenos Aires, Acapulco, Barcelona and Madrid,” says David, who has a tennis academy and a seafront esplanade in Jávea named after him. “The hard part was taking the decision [to retire] after the clay court season – stopping and thinking about what I really wanted,” Ferrer admits. “When you see that your body doesn't react the same and you can't recover so well...I love tennis and have no desire to give it up, but at the level I'm competing it doesn't fulfil me as much as making the effort to go and play in more minor tournaments. “That's why I'd like to finish next season playing before my own people, here in Spain.” Ferrer stresses that the birth of his first child in May has not influenced his decision to step down from the ATP tour circuit. “Leo has nothing to do with the decision I've made,” he insists. “It's been harder for me physically because I get less rest, but having a baby hasn't been what's led to my deciding

2019 will be my last season. This is purely because I can't play at the level I want to and I don't have the same chances any more. It's not because of my son – if I was still high up the ranking, I'd carry on playing.” Ferrer spent seven seasons in the world top 10, and currently ranks number 41. Ahead of his match against world number one Rafa Nadal, David said he was 'very happy' to have drawn such a great rival. “It's going to be my last Grand Slam and, for me, it's the icing on the cake having the chance to play against Rafa on the centre court at the US Open – I'm really happy because tennis has given me this as a final gift,” Ferrer enthused. Often referred to as El León de Jávea ('The Lion of Jávea'), Ferrer has won 10

ATP 500 titles, 16 ATP 250s and a Masters 1000, which was in Paris in 2012 – the year he came fourth in the doubles at the London Olympics with his game partner Feliciano López, reaching the semi-finals – and has reached the final rounds in eight major tournaments, six of which were Masters 1000. Behind Rafa Nadal and Manuel Orantes – in that order – Ferrer has the thirdhighest number of titles of any Spanish player in history, at 27, and the secondhighest number of match victories after Nadal, with over 720 wins out of 1,000 or so matches. His 11 consecutive seasons in the ATP top 20 – seven of which in the top 10 and four in the top five – is a Spanish tennis record only ever beaten by Rafa Nadal in the history of the sport.

Palma airline bomb hoax leads to passenger's arrest An online bomb warning in English led to a Swedish man being arrested in Alcúdia (Mallorca), Guardia Civil officers reveal. The accused launched a hoax explosive alert affecting a flight due to leave Palma de Mallorca's Son Sant Joan airport heading for Stockholm. He was one of the passengers due to board the aircraft the next day. Police traced the message to a server in a hotel in Alcúdia, on a computer for guest use only. A number of Swedes due to fly

home were staying in the same resort complex. After scrutinising the profiles of each of the passengers due on the plane, the accused was identified. He had previously asked his tour operator to change his hotel as he was not satisfied with where he was staying, but the agency had refused to do so. It is thought the bomb hoax was an act of revenge. The flight left on time and landed in

Stockholm without incident, although without the passenger in question on board. He had been arrested and held in custody in the town of Inca until yesterday evening when he was due to appear before a judge. It is not known whether he has been subsequently released, but he is likely to face a hefty fine and at least a suspended prison sentence. The name of the airline involved has not been revealed.

Bullfighting school gilded future awaiting them in the arena, all be it a brief one. The students are predominantly from modest backgrounds – from either lower-middle class or middle class families. And they are prepared to work hard. Recently, the physical training element of the program has been intensified so that students are in good shape before moving into more specific terrain. They are also mainly from families with bullfighting in their blood. There are 50 bullfighting academies in Spain, and 10 more across France, Mexico, Portugal and Colombia. Altogether, these academies have 1,200 students. Most are private but around 10 percent receive subsidies, usually from the local or city council. “The future of these academies is in the hands of the politicians,” says Óscar Plaza, who is setting up an international association of academies. Many believe that the “new political parties” will fail to address their needs. There is no data on how the academies have evolved in recent years. Nor is it clear how many students they have. What is clear is that the public has lost a certain degree of interest in this peculiarly Spanish ‘art’. According to figures from the Ministry of Culture, the number of bull runs in the provinces, accounting for a quarter of all bullfighting spectacles, fell from 953 to 387 between 2007 and 2016. In 2006, 9.8 percent of the population went to see a bullfight, but in 2015, this fell to 6.9 percent. At 20 years old, Boja Ximelis is about to make his debut in the ring. This

summer he will take on two young steers. The minimum age to fight in the bull ring is 16 but does not include picadors ¬– a person who goads the bull with a lance. Performing trial runs at the academy, which organizes bullfights and exchanges across Spain, can begin at 14. He ventured into the local bullring at the age of seven at his cousin’s communion and has been addicted ever since. He complains of a general ignorance regarding the bullfighting world and of the antimonarchy and anti-bullfighting lobbies. It is impossible to measure the general sentiment towards bullfighting but it is certainly not as positive as it was in the era of Manuel Benítez Pérez, better known as “El Cordobés”, who was an icon of the ring in the 1960s. And the academies know that they have a challenging future ahead. Not female friendly? Bullfighting schools are no longer just about simulating the bullfight and physical exercise. The pupils at Las Ventas now receive classes in the theory of the sport, as if to school them in politically correct responses to critics of the ‘art’. Such asin the response to the lack of females in the sport. The man in charge of the school, Miguel Serrano, is from Seville. He believes that it is more likely for a girl’s family to dissuade her from the arena than for a boy’s. One glance at the academies’ books says it all. There are few girls – one per academy at most. The last figures published by the Ministry of Culture show that women account for just 2.6 percent of professional bullfighters.

The boys start arriving at the academy at 5pm. One by one, they approach their track-suited teacher, shake his hand and say, “Good afternoon, teacher.” This polite greeting is part of the training in respect and traditional values offered at the José Cubrero “Yiyo” bullfighting school, run by bullfighter José Pedro Prado, who is popularly known as “El Fundi.” Las Ventas has been home to Spain’s most revered matadors. Now, for 20 euros a month coupled with unequivocal commitment, a youngster – male or female - can be schooled in the technique of simulated bullfighting until ready to take on young steers. Once they have graduated to the real thing, other costs come into play, such as €300 for capes and over €1,000 for swords, not to mention the cost of a small-scale bullfight, known as novillada. One might think that in this era of screens and devices, there would be few takers but the school, but that is not the case. These young aspirants are not so different from bullfighting wannabes of 20 years ago, but they are different from the plucky youths who once threw themselves in front of the bulls in the local village square, looking for an opportunity to show off their skills; and from those who, stealing into a field of fighting bulls, would have their act of bravado end in tragedy. Now, they all go to school to learn the tricks of the trade and claim to understand that fame and fortune, if it comes their way, won’t be theirs for long. An average career lasts eight to 10 years, but it is hard to persuade these young hopefuls that there won’t be a

Foods You Can Eat and Not Gain Weight A piece of advice that dieters give their clients is that you should eat until you are full. This does not mean eat as much chocolate cake as you can stomach, but rather select foods that make you full in tinier quantities. However, it’s not always about the amount that you eat that makes you full. In fact, there are several foods out there that you can consume to your heart’s content without feeling any guilt or putting on any weight. If you’re looking for a diet plan that consists of eating as much as you like, then the following food items are definitely for you. Note to the reader: the foods listed here are safe to eat in any quantity, but you’ll most likely be full before having seconds. Boiled potatoes Boiled potatoes are a dieter’s best friend since a little will go a long way. Feel free to eat as much as you’d like, but you’d probably feel full way before your second potato. Eggs Eggs are one of the greatest sources of nutrients that will power you throughout the day. Their protein content is unmatched, making them the perfect substitute to heavy steaks and burgers when on a diet. Oatmeal Oatmeal will absorb any fluid surrounding it, plumping it up and making it even more stomach-filling. Eat it in the morning to give you muchneeded energy that you would otherwise find in salty snacks during the midday. Soup Even though soup is basically flavored water, it’ll keep your stomach satisfied for several hours. Eating it as an appetizer before your main course will significantly reduce how much food your stomach can

Popcorn When we say popcorn, we don’t mean the stuff you get at a concession stand at the state fair or the lobby of a movie theater. Natural popcorn is rich in fiber and is a great snack for dieters. The airpopped variety is the healthiest type of popcorn to munch on. Cruciferous veg Vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli are packed with fiber that will fill your stomachs quickly. Be sure to leave the cheese and bacon off when preparing a broccoli or asparagus dish for your dieting friends.

stomach. Legumes Legumes like peas and lentils are rich in protein and fiber – the two most stomach-filling nutrients. Their calorie content is also relatively low compared to the quantity you can eat in one sitting. Apples The body needs sugar to operate, but when dieting, forget the fizzy colas and sweet snacks. Apples should be an integral part of your diet plan since their soluble fiber and low-calorie content will enhance your weight loss in the long run. Citrus Oranges and grapefruit are also weight-loss friendly snacks. They contain large amounts of water and fiber with very few calories to keep your stomach from rumbling before lunchtime. Salmon Oily fish such as salmon are extremely healthy. It’s loaded with protein, fats, and omega-3 fatty acids that help fight

inflammation. Salmon can be great when used in a healthy, leafy vegetable salad. Lean meats Lean meats like skinless chicken and pork chop are great sources of protein without exorbitant amounts of fat. The reduced calorie content by removing fat and skin means you can enjoy more of these meats per serving. Cottage cheese Cottage cheese is another example of a healthy but super-tasty weight loss food. The cheese is chock-full of protein, vitamin B, calcium, and phosphorus. It satiety level is similar to that of eggs. Leafy Greens The calories in a single gram of leafy greens are significantly fewer than in a gram of any type of meat, meaning that you can eat more without feeling guilty while feeling fuller. Have as much as you want, but make sure you add flavor by adding an olive oil vinaigrette or similar a low-fat dressing.

Tuna Tuna is a fish with essential fatty acids and hardly any calories. It’s also a favorite type of fish among pro athletes and bodybuilders for a reason: it’s full to the brim with muscle-building protein. If an increase in protein intake is your goal, be sure to purchase canned tuna in water and not oil. Beans Certain beans can be beneficial for weight loss. Beans such as kidney beans, black beans, and lentils are high in fiber and protein and will fill your stomachs up in no time Avocados Avocados are a unique fruit in the sense that they contain tremendous levels of healthy fats. Despite their fatty content, they’re not as dense as you would think since their fattiness is offset by its water content. Whole grains Any whole grain food that’s loaded with fiber and has trace amounts of protein can be consumed in large quantities without any guilt. Whole grains can be found in white rice, brown rice,

and oats. Be sure not to fall prey to the marketer’s version of “whole grains” which aim to cover their heavily processed junk food. Chili peppers Though you may not want to go on a chili-eating binge, you can do it without expanding your waistline. In fact, chili is often used as an active ingredient in overthe-counter weight loss pills. Perhaps the natural heat of the chili helps burn away excess fat. Chia seeds Chia seeds belong to the group of superfoods with the highest nutrition content. For every ounce of the seeds, you get 11 grams of fiber, so there’s little doubt that a small bowl of the darkcolored seeds will keep you full for long periods. High protein yogurts Greek, kefir and Skyr...these type of yogurt contains huge amounts of probiotic bacteria that help your gut flora process food and help fight against inflammation. Their low-fat counterparts are commonly packed with sugar and artificial flavorings that any person on a diet should avoid. Blueberries Although the antioxidant content of blueberries is what skyrocketed them to popularity, it’s really an overall healthy fruit that you can binge on. A single cup of the berries will give you about 15% of your daily recommended value of fiber and only 85 calories. Vegetables Cucumbers, tomates, courgette, aubergine are all nutritious and low in fat and calories..meaning you can eat until your heart’s content.

Back to School on the Bus As many parents and guardians prepare to send their little ones and not-so-littleones off to the next stage of their educational development, it time once again to think about how to stay a little safer on that journey to and from school. Every day, 230,000 students use buses to go to and from school, and with around 17,000 buses (some 40% of the entire private fleet) used as dedicated transport vehicles on the school run. Generally speaking, using a bus for school transport is a safe means of travel, however, we can all consider how these vehicle occupants can become vulnerable, and hopefully, by being aware, avoid possible problems and injuries on the journey. On the bus, if seatbelts are provided, they must be used. According to several studies, the use of a seatbelt whilst in a bus would reduce fatal injuries by 90% in the event of a head-on collision or rollover, since, correctly fastened, they prevent the passenger being projected from their seat and reduces impacts on the chest, abdomen and legs.

Since October 2007, all new buses must have seatbelts fitted, although that still leaves a lot of the fleet without seatbelts, many of those over 11 years old. The government has this year progressed a proposal to guarantee that all buses used on school runs must have seatbelts, although, as with all legislative changes, if this does become mandatory it is likely to take many years, at which time the antique fleet may also have been replaced with newer vehicles in which seatbelts are mandatory. Trips from home to school can be a good time for the adult accompanying children to remind them of some messages about road safety, such as: • Never stop behind the bus. • Wait for the driver's signal and always cross at least three metres ahead. • Inside the bus, stay seated and with the seatbelt on, if it is installed. • Do not run when you get to the bus, or when leaving. • Obey the driver and the monitor. In addition, parents should check the safety of the buses in which their

children are travelling, and try to lobby the school to only hire buses with seatbelts and check that a monitor accompanies the children during the journey. During late September, there will be an awareness campaign focussing on seatbelt and child restraint use, and the use of seatbelts on school buses (where fitted). The Guardia Civil, DGT, local and regional police will all be working together to check on these vehicles and the use of seatbelts, although in fairness, they should not have to enforce any laws which are designed with one single aim, so save lives.

On the School Run If you are taking your children to school by car, remember that children under 1.35 metres in height are not allowed in the front seats. There are one or two exceptions, which you can read about on the website, n332.es. All occupants must be secured in the vehicle, by means of a seatbelt, or specially designed retention system suitable for them, that includes children. Those of a younger age must have a suitable seat which must be secured. All objects must also be secure in the vehicle. That not only means their school bags, lunchboxes and football kit, but also that school project they have to take in, nearer the end of term. When you arrive at the school drop off point, remember that the laws still apply to you, the same as any other driver. You are still not allowed to double park, block entrances, or park in an illegal place with your hazard lights on just because you are dropping off your children for school. You must choose a safe, convenient and legal place to drop off your children.

Where possible, ensure that they exit the vehicle on the pavement side, still warning them to be aware of their surroundings before opening the door. They may hit a pedestrian, item of street furniture, or another object, so they should be taught to be aware and alert before opening the door. If they have to leave on the road side, vigilance is even more important, they must check it is

totally safe before opening the door, and must move to the pavement as soon as possible. Remember, when you are about to pull away, pay extra attention to your surroundings too, including rigorous checks of your blind spots, as there could be children or other road users appearing from anywhere.

Advice for those not on the Other Healthier school run Ways to School As we head into September and the great “back to school” event, we must also consider those not on the school run, or those without children who may now have a different experience on their journey than of late. All road users must be reminded that traffic will increase at certain times of day as parents and guardians resume the school run. It is normal for traffic to increase in the mornings because of this, which in turn can result in delays. The same situation applies at the end of the school day, but at what time? Often, in Spain, schools operate a less robust timetable, adapting to such things as weather conditions and light, and so the

school day often varies from season to season. All non-parents can do to prepare for this is be aware of the changing timetable and allow extra time for all journeys. You will also now see more buses on the roads, those buses operating on the school run will display a pictogram which shows the type of service they are operating. This is not only useful for parents and guardians for spotting school buses, but acts as an indication to all road users that the service is a school bus, carrying children, and is therefore subject to a restricted speed, the maximum permitted speed must be reduced by 10 kilometres per hour, and,

when it stops, children may wander into the road, so they must be given more space and attention. If you approach a school bus which has stopped, slow down and take it easy, being extra observant and giving the bus more room than you might with other vehicles. There is a chance that some children may be late and run into the road to catch the bus, or those leaving the bus might wander around, oblivious to their surroundings, and so vigilance is crucial. If a bus is indicating to pull out, let it. There may be a temptation to try to pass the bus, but courtesy is key, so please give way, if it´s safe to do so.

In addition to the car or school bus there are other ways of getting to school, ways which may offer a healthier alternative such as cycling or walking. If you are cycling, remember that when you are on the road, your bicycle is a vehicle just like any other. That means that the laws that apply to car drivers, for example, also apply to cyclists. You are not allowed to ride through red lights and you mustn´t use a mobile phone when cycling. In addition, the use of headphones, or anything that covers or plugs into the ear like headphones, is prohibited, and so you can´t listen to music either. It is also mandatory that your bike has a bell and always, without exception, wear a helmet. Be courteous on your bike, be aware of your surroundings at all times, and allow plenty of room if you are passing

parked vehicles, looking out for anything or anyone who may be crossing between, and for car doors opening. Be seen. Wear high visibility clothing. This is mandatory during times of poor visibility, such as darkness or rain, as is lights, but it is also advisable at all times. Also remember that the maximum number of cycles allowed side by side is 2, and only when no other vehicles need to pass. If there are other vehicles on the road, you must be in single file. The same applies to walking. Be seen and walk in single file if no pavement exists. If walking in a group at night, you must also use lights at the front and back. Always be ware, alert and careful, and your journey to school can be healthy and fun, but always trying to make it as safe as it can be.

San Miguel Golf Society CD Torrevieja inaugurates at Hacienda Riquelme its head office supported A quick check of the SMGS archives shows that scoring at Hacienda Riquelme is historically a challenge on this tough but beautifully laid out Nicklaus design course. Stray off the lush fairways and the ball-eating spear grass tufts of doom quickly kill off hopes of scrambling out of trouble. This is one of those tracks where it is almost a relief to find one of the many bunkers which line the way. With no breeze and temperatures in the mid 30s, success went to the players who held up best down

the stretch and finished with points on the daunting 18th hole. The greens were firm but in pristine condition, although they seemed to slow a touch as the day progressed. Kudos to the greenskeepers for presenting the course in such great condition and thanks also to the clubhouse staff for much needed reviving refreshments at the 19th hole. In the Bronze division, Ron Stenhouse finished on top with 31 points, followed home by Mick Roscoe on 30 points and Kyrre Skarsmoen with 27 points. Third place in Silver went to Kev Allbright who lost

out to Alan Macdonald on countback, both players scoring 32 points. Chris Wren was the winner with 34 points and he still had enough juice in his tank to take nearest the pin honours on the long par 3 17th hole. Nice shot, Chris! Our Captain, Tony Smale, came third in Gold division with 31 hard-won points. Best round of golf on the day was undoubtedly played by John Osborne, whose score of 34 points off a 6 handicap was a quality performance. Unluckily for him, Mike Greatorex took full advantage of his handicap advantage to edge John out of first place on countback. Once again it was the final hole which apparently made the difference. A sizeable field of guests were a welcome boost to our numbers and for the second week in succession, Ann Webster finished first with 32 points. Jaime Martinez del Castillo was second with 30 points beating Sandra Dibble on countback. Thanks for joining us, we hope to see you all again in the future. Nearest the pin winners were Alan Macdonald (hole 5), John Osborne (hole 7), Norman McBride (hole 15) and Chris Wren (hole 17). Mike Fearnehough was this week’s Abacus winner and deserves his bottle of wine (sponsored by Stenhouse flooring) for staying the course if not actually staying on it much. Members will be relieved to learn that Ken Flaherty’s lengthy streak without winning anything was broken by a fortuitous payout from the ‘In it to Win it’ draw. Well, a win’s a win, Ken, right? Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Tony Smale a call on 628227687. The next three games will be at La Finca, La Serena and Alenda.

More than 100 people attended the inauguration of the new CD Torrevieja head office that took place on Thursday evening. Among those present were the newly crowned Queen of Salt, Cira Gualdo, and her maid, Alba García; PP councillors, Carmen Gómez, Sandra Sánchez and Inmaculada Montesinos; C’s councillor, Pilar Gómez Magán and Pablo Samper from “Sueña Torrevieja”, as well as the president of the PP’s Nuevas Generaciones, Domingo Paredes. Unfortunately, and despite sending a personal invitation to every member of the local government, not one turned up, or even sent a reply excusing their absence. Some of the Club’s sponsors offered extra support, such as Ramón from the “Huertano” restaurant, who put on a special dinner to celebrate the event. From the various associations and groups that were invited, the vicepresident of Apymeco, Tomás Viuda, was there, as was the president of the “Globus” association, Anna Semenova, who will introduce CD Torrevieja to the five thousand plus Russian residents that belong to the group, encouraging them to support the club. And, of course, the evening would not have been the same without the presence of Antonio Sala Buades, tireless CD Torrevieja chronicler, or photographer Joaquín Carrión, who attends every home game with his equipment to visually report on each match. The event was a huge success, with the whole

squad present, together with Club staff including Juanjo Fernández, Claudio Fabián, Juan Antonio, Matilde Serapio and others, who were there to welcome guests and answer any questions. Many commented on the fantastically positive atmosphere within the Club and said that they were looking forward to the start of the season so that the team could continue to show off all the hard work and excellent results that have been displayed so far

during this pre-season period. The new football kit was also on display for the first time at the event, and information about the season tickets for 2018/2019 will be posted to the website in the next few days. One of the reasons for CD Torrevieja opening the head office in Calle Caballero de Rodas 56 was so that it could physically become a part of the city and its society. At the same time, residents can come to the office to ask for information, find out what’s going on and get to know the Club at closer proximity.

Walking Football ABBEY ANGLING

RODS & REELS

This week saw the last of the Open matches in August, and we fished it at the El Bosquet Complex on the 28th August. There was a lot of work taking place around the complex, with heavy machinery digging out new channels etc. The match was a walk off using pegs numbered 1 to 24, and I drew peg 12 and Neil drew peg 13 so we were both the last to choose a peg and all the hot pegs had been picked, but I managed to take the top spot with 33.980kgs and Neil McBirnie a very close second with 33.600kgs and coming in third was Dave Hutchinson with 28.440kgs. 1st Terry Screen with 33.980kgs fishing the pole using pellet 2nd Neil McBirnie with 33.600kgs fishing the pole using pellet 3rd Dave Hutchinson with 28.440kgs fishing the pole using paste Next week on the 4th September we begin the Winter Series Cup Matches There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368

It was also the last Open match in August being run by Neil McBirnie and fished on the 29th August on the El Bosquet Complex, as Rods and Reels begin the first round of there Summer Championship next week on the 5th September. Neil McBirnie once again took the top spot with an excellent weight of 45.940kgs with Ian Brown in second place with 31.000kgs and coming in third was Stuart Taylor with 15.760kgs 1st Neil McBirnie with 45.940kgs fishing the pole using pellet 2nd Ian Brown with 31.000kgs fishing the pole using pellet 3rd Stuart Taylor with 15.760kgs fishing the pole and feeder using corn There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 611451423 Tight Lines Terry Screen

C F Rojales (Walking Football Club) play every Tuesday morning, at 11.00 am, at the Rojales Municiple Sports Centre and is open to all nationalities, all skill levels and both male and female players. The only criteria is that you are over 50, love football and want to keep fit. Walking Football is just a slower paced version of the 11 a side game, but without too much physical

contact. The games are played in a friendly, but competitive, nature and rely more on skill than physicality. The club would like to invite anyone who may be interested to come along, have a go or just watch a game to see how it unfolds. CF Rojales will be recommencing its season on Tuesday, 11th September..

Las Ramblas Golf Society We began our week with the popular ‘Waltzer 123’. One player to score on the 1st, two on the 2nd, three on the third and then repeated. Close result yet again, but stepping into the spotlight this week, with a glittering 84 points, were Anton (du Bec) Douglas, Mike Mahony, Rachael Leckey and (much to his surprise) Andy McDonald. Onto Wednesday’s stableford, which could best be described as more akin to the ‘D’ Day Landings’. (As is normal at this time of year),our greens are undergoing necessary extensive work and are covered with hundreds of tonnes of sand. Even though we played the front 9 twice, Ron (Furyck) Phipps landed ‘Gold’ with a very commendable 39 points to take this week’s spoils. On countback, with 35 points, Mike Mahoney just edged out Alan Douglas whilst Tom Hardie and Olga Douglaswere mentioned in dispatches as they both shot 34 points. Also reported from the front line was that one of our troops went AWOL after 6 holes. It was OK though, we found him ‘tanked’ up back at HQ. Only two 2’s today, John Dobson and Bryan Neal. Well done to everybody under what were ‘The Longest Day’of conditions.

Due to the maintenance work currently being carried out on the course, we did not compete on Friday. So, I’m sure you’ll be heartbroken to learn that this is the end of this week’s report! Pues, hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

SACKED IN THE MORNING ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Ah, so that is what a world record fee for a goalkeeper gets you in the 2018 version of the Premier League. Yes, I know it was only a world record for

about twenty minutes, but Liverpool went big on Alisson in the hope he’d provide less stupid (or comedic, depending on your viewpoint) moments than Loris Karius (who has been sent to Turkey as penance for his sins). King Kloppo signed Alisson to Liverpool in the summer because, we believe, he is supposed to be damn good with his feet and, from what we have seen so far, no mug with his hands either. Do you remember the good old days when a goalkeeper’s pen-profile in the matchday programme would say “Alisson is a great shot-stopper” as if that wasn’t the number one requirement for being a goalkeeper back then? In this modern age, you could argue that actually keeping the ball out of the net is less important than being able to use your feet and act like Bobby Moore with gloves on. Maybe the playground game of rush keepers was light-years ahead of its time?

Anyway, I digress massively already. Alisson, as you might have already guessed, made a bit of a fool of himself against Leicester City where Liverpool led 2-0. Joe Gomez could have lumped it, Virgil could have lumped it and then, once he’d been given a shocker of a backpass, Alisson himself could have just lumped it. He didn’t and Leicester scored, meaning people like me can

wave. Oh, no. The red corner is being challenged by the blue corner and that blue corner has a sign saying “We are Chelsea” above it. Wasn’t Sarriball supposed to take months and months to implement? Maurizio Sarri says Chelsea are still “work in progress” but they patiently kept playing their game waiting for Bournemouth to step aside and let

release the can of whoopass in his direction. Does this mean Alisson was a bad buy? Er, no. Should he stop playing that way? Er, no. Was it very, very funny to watch? Oh, yes. Jurgen said after the game that, “it needed to happen so it never happens again” which is a fair point. I mean, Jurgen must have had it up to his back teeth with goalkeeping errors so has probably suggested to his Brazilian record signing that it would be wise not to make the same misjudgement again anytime soon, otherwise, Turkey is the destination. More importantly, for Liverpool fans, they almost certainly have both hands on the trophy now was they have won all four of their opening matches. You have to feel for Manchester City, what a shortlived title that was. But, hang on. It isn’t just Liverpool riding the crest of the four-out-of-four

Pedro score the all-important first goal. But, should Marcos Alonso have been sent off? Quite probably, as he is a bit like that, but if Sarri has got even Eden Hazard putting in a shift then all feels well in Cobham. Many people felt that if Jose Mourinho lost at Burnley then time could be called early on his run as Manchester United manager. But, if nothing else, Jose likes stringing out a bit of drama and an away day at Burnley this season is already feeling like easypickings for many a side. Romelu Lukaku put in the ultimate Romelu Lukaku first half of football at Turf Moor, full of shocking first touches but two goals and although United’s first 45 was far from classic United, it was certainly classic Jose and that folks, that means incredibly hard to watch and no fun for a neutral. Still, United fans had a really original way of passing the time – a banner attached to a plane. United fans

clearly look to Arsenal fans for inspiration now and it was clear they back Mourinho over Ed Woodward by calling Mr Ed a “specialist in failure”. Seems fair though. Graeme Souness had gone to town on Paul Pogba, just for a change, before the match saying the French World Cup winner was ‘playing for himself’. Well, he’s unlikely to be putting it in for Mourinho, is he? Either way, Pogba didn’t help himself by missing a secondhalf spot-kick that saw Joe Hart smile for the first time since about April 2016. Still, it is not all positive for Jose, is it? Watford welcomed Tottenham knowing that another win would be (a) hilarious and (b) see them keep pace with Liverpool and Chelsea at the top of the Premier League. At 1-0 Tottenham it looked like that Javi Gracia’s bubble was bursting. That was until Troy Deeney and Craig Cathcart, two players who still manage to get Premier League minutes against the odds, turned it back in favour of the Hornets. Therefore, Watford are JOINT TOP of the Premier League after four matches. I repeat, Watford are JOINT TOP of the Premier League after four matches. This is not a drill. Rafa Benitez has been winning both plaudits and abuse for the way he tried to stop Chelsea last week and Manchester City this, yet both outings led to 2-1 defeats for Newcastle United. This week, Rafa recalled Jamaal Lascelles and his skipper responded by making the mistake that led to City’s first. Like last week, Newcastle moved out of their back eleven shape to draw level but were unable to hold on to the draw. Plaudits or abuse are one thing, points are another. Credit to West Ham United, they manage to continuously give me something to write about. It looked like they were going to explode into life on Saturday, taking their first point in a 0-0 draw against Sporting Wolves of Portugal FC. Yet, in true Hammers style, they managed to get beaten with a goal deep, deep into injury time by a player with the least amount of end product known to man. Yes, Adama Traore loves a dribble but rarely does it end up with anything useful. Apart from on Saturday. When his end product ended

up in the back of West Ham’s net. Manuel Pellegrini called it how it is though, “a very bad start”. It’s the hope that kills Hammers fans, after all. The last time they lost all four of their opening games they got relegated. Fun times. No Zaha, no party for Uncle Roy at Selhurst Park. Wilf picked up an injury in training meaning all those folks, me included, who expected Palace to deal with Mark Hughes quite easily, were wrong. I’d expected Wilf to get injured during the match from all the kicking he was likely to get but there was no need for any of that and Southampton went on to win 2-0. That’s not going to get Sparky sacked now, is it? If you want some comedy, try and watch Benteke’s performance in front of goal. Roy Hodgson needs Zaha back, pronto. Brighton and Fulham became the Glenn Murray show after an utterly Gross penalty was missed. Fulham led 20 and they will need to learn to close that kind of score out if they want to do well this season. Brighton got back in it through a Murray double which probably made Gareth Southgate wonder why he’d picked Danny Welbeck. Neil Warnock, and isn’t it a pleasure to have him back in the top-flight, talked about targeting Aaron Ramsey when Arsenal came to Cardiff. I’m guessing that is because Aaron is from Cardiff and it was his fault they cashed on him as a young man. Ramsey was more interested in talking up Unai Emery, but when Cardiff equalised in first-half injury-time you were left thinking, yet again, that nothing has actually changed at the Emirates. Petr Cech really isn’t getting this “play it out from the back” thing, is he? Cardiff were the last side in English football (yes, I know they are Welsh) to score this season and Arsenal let them get two. Brilliant. Luckily, they had just enough quality at the other end to get three themselves. Everton looked just a little bit Sam Allardycey against Huddersfield who will have been delighted to get a point. Richarlison might have been suspended but it was his replacement Dominic Calvert-Lewin who scored to Toffee goal. Hang on, maybe it’s the position for Silva that works rather than the actual player?

as a ‘specialist bat’ then he needs to do better than 6 and 0. Actually, looking at the England top order in this series, he probably doesn’t have to do better than that to stay in the side. Ben Stokes got starts in both innings, but I still feel he needs to be getting regular 50-100s to be thought of as a world-class all-rounder even if he is still decent with the ball and can catch better than most. And, if Ali can take nine

wickets in a match then you have to question why Rashid ended up with none. Just admit it, Ed Smith, you got this one completely wrong – in England, anyway. England have bought themselves the luxury of the 5th Test with nothing riding on it in terms of the outcome of the series. Could they be so bold as to make the changes that really need to be changed? Over to you, Mr Smith and friends.

Observations from the outfield. Isn’t Test cricket absolutely great? I mean, if you have got the impression off me in the last few weeks that I have been a little frustrated by England in their performances against India then you would have been absolutely spot-on. But, in the absence of two Test teams being absolutely brilliant against each other we have been treated to two Test teams who have been wonderfully inconsistent in many areas whilst being totally consistent in others meaning we have had a wonderful late summer of Test action. England, somehow, won the 4th Test in Southampton despite yet another multitude of sins. And, once again, it was players not really considered good enough for the side on a regular basis that bailed them out of the swamp they were determined to hide in. Did you know that right now Sam Curran has a better Test batting average than Joe Root who is allegedly one the best bats in world cricket? Sure, if he is still able to say that in another ten Test matches then we have something very special on our hands but right now I am more interested in learning whether Sam would like to open the batting? He is already looking like a star and boy, have

his runs been important in this series – as well as some prize wickets claimed with his left-arm swing. And what about Moeen? Can someone please explain to me why exactly he was dropped in the first place? He is always likely to mess up with the bat but he is always likely to get some runs too and there is still no better spinner for me in England on English pitches – and let’s be honest, as Ali said himself, one bad tour of Australia does not make you a bad cricketer. Ali scored valuable lower-order runs in the first innings yet was moved to bat three in the second and, predictably, failed. Just keep him at seven for crying out loud, where he is successful. More importantly, he took 5-63 in the first and 4-71 in the second, spinning England to the series. Well bowled Moeen. And well bowled Sam Curran as it was rather fitting he got the last wicket. Admittedly, this wasn’t just about Moeen and Sam (though it was, really). Joss Buttler batted with incredible maturity in the second innings considering he is still believed to be a T20 yokel who just slogs. His 69, supported by Curran, eeked England towards setting the Indian side a total that was never going to be easy in a 4th innings chase.

But of course, this wouldn’t be me talking cricket if I didn’t have a few moans. Can we please call time on the Keaton Jennings experiment now? Surely it is time to give Rory Burns a poke, seeing as he is about the only opening bat we haven’t had a look at? Also, get Ollie Pope back in the XI in the place of Jonny Bairstow for the last Test who was clearly having a sulk for not being allowed to keep wicket. If we are going to pick him
