Alicante province to avoid worst of latest heatwave The Alicante province is set to escape the ‘alert’ for high temperatures this week but elsewhere, temperatures will reach the high 30s. According to predictions by Spain’s met office, AEMET, the week will begin with cloudy skies across much of the Valencian Community but temperatures will rise by around Wednesday when bursts of hot, dry air continue to arrive from the Sahara. Coastal winds will bring temperatures in some areas down by as much as three degrees, but weather experts warn that many areas in Alicante – especially inland – will experience extremely high temperatures around midweek. A total of 40 Spanish provinces are on alert for high temperatures this week, 14 of them with

'orange alert' (significant risk) and will reach temperatures of 40 degrees, according to the predictions of the State Meteorological Agency. This will be the latest in a series of heatwaves which have swept across the country since June. Last month, temperatures broke records as 33 weather stations recorded their hottest ever weather for June – some measuring as much as three degrees above previous records.

Spain recorded its highest temperature ever in July 2017, when thermometers in Córdoba measured 46.9 degrees. The hottest temperature for on record for the month June was logged in 1965 at the monitoring station at Seville airport, when the temperature reached 45.2 degrees.

BITE SIZE Kolted guitars stolen NEWS: A reminder about movies in English For those of you who are not aware, it might be interesting to know that IMF cinema in Torrevieja shows a movie in V.O. (that is, the original soundtrack – usually in English – with Spanish subtitles). The screening information changes on a Thursday for a Friday so the information the Costa Blanca People has this week is valid until this Thursday (25th July). The English language movie may change on Friday, or if it is proving popular, may remain for another week. As always, it is best to check online before visiting the cinema to be sure (https://cinesimf.com/es/cartelera/imftorrevieja) and remember to look for V.O. which will indicate the movie in English. As an extra bonus, Mondays and Wednesdays have a reduced rate of just €5 entry. This week’s V.O. movie, screened daily at 6pm, is the new Lion King.

Two swimmers rescued The Guardia Civil and Red Cross rescued two swimmers, a 67 year old woman and a 70 year old man, in difficulty in two separate incidents on Wednesday. The first rescue took place just before 10am at Cala Lo Ferris, where there is no lifeguard on duty. Emergency services were notified that a swimmer was in difficulty in the water. Guardia Civil quickly arrived to the scene where they saw a female swimmer around 150

valuable Limited Edition Gibson Les Paul guitar (in pine with KOLTED printed on the front), a Sigma semi acoustic guitar and an Ibanez Special Edition bass guitar. The police are looking into the robbery and fans of the band have been frantically sharing an appeal on social media in a bid to have the instruments returned. It is hoped that the distinctive nature of the instruments will prevent their resale on the black market but these hardworking local musicians just want their guitars returned. The robbery comes as a huge blow as the band has just released its official music video for new single, Times Two. If anyone has information about the robbery or the whereabouts of the stolen instruments, please contact the band on + 34 603 386 402.

Popular rock band Kolted were devastated this week when the band’s van was broken into and a number of valuable instruments stolen. At the time of the robbery, the band were playing a regular live gig in the Flamenca Beach Commercial Centre in Playa Flamenca. A spokesperson for the band told the Costa Blanca People, “They must have known what they were looking for – the windows of the van were smashed and they took very specific instruments. We were playing a gig at the time, so it is clear they knew that the van would be unattended.” The incident occurred on Thursday night and the band are appealing for eyewitnesses who may have been in the vicinity of Playa Flamenca between the hours of 10pm and 1.30am when they believe the robbery took place. The instruments stolen included a

Vueling refuses woman wearing low cut top Two women have criticised Spanish airline Vueling after staff refused one of them permission to travel for wearing a low cut top. The sister of the passenger refused access took to Twitter on Sunday, claiming that the airline refused her sister solely ‘for wearing a low cut body top’. The airline, however, claimed that the passenger became abusive and this was the reason she was refused travel. A video uploaded to Twitter shows the Spanish woman’s sister being refused access. In the video, other passengers can be heard expressing their disbelief that the girl is being denied access before airline staff are heard calling the Guardia Civil to ‘come quickly’ for help in removing the two women

from the access tunnel to the plane. The woman also claimed that despite other passengers offering clothing to her sister in order that she could ‘cover up’ and be allowed fly, staff would not allow the girl to travel. According to the Tweet, the girl claims that airline staff would not

allow her sister to travel on the Barcelona bound flight because her bare back would rub off the

seat and that her clothing – a black body top, denim skirt and trainers - could make other passengers feel uncomfortable. Vueling also took to Twitter to reply to the incident, saying that its transport conditions apply equally to men and to women, and are designed to defend and protect the safety of all passengers on board and to regulate their behaviour for the benefit of all. Vueling said it reserves the right to deny access to passengers whose behaviour does not comply with said conditions, adding that ‘the passenger was in a swimsuit, and the response to the request of staff was abusive – this is the only reason why it was decided to call the authorities and not let her fly.”

BITE SIZE Four drugs arrests NEWS: Continued from page 3 metres from shore calling for help. Due to the wavy conditions and seriousness of the situation, one of the officers from the Citizen Security Unit (USECIC) made the decision to make his way out to sea. Halfway there, the officer received the help of a surfer who lent his board to help carry the woman and take her to shore. The 67-year-old British woman, once safe, received first aid from health personnel, refusing to be transferred to the medical center and left the scene on her own two feet. Just before 10.30am on the same day, at Curva del Palangre also in Torrevieja, a boat belonging to the Local Police and Maritime Salvage of the Red Cross was already at sea when it was involved in the rescue of a man who had lost consciousness in the water. The 70 year old man was revived and brought to Torrevieja hospital. Meanwhile, a 62-year-old man after falling into the sea at Cala Capitan in Torrevieja. He was one of five people who were sailing in a 5-metre long, rented motor boat, when for unknown reasons, the boat overturned.

The Guardia Civil has arrested four people in Novelda for alleged drug trafficking. Officers are also investigating two others on suspicion of belonging to a criminal gang, illegal possession of weapons, robbery with violence and intimidation and extortion. An investigation has being ongoing since January of this year when officers in Novelda learned of the existence of an active criminal gang, dealing cocaine in the area. Officers investigating the gang’s activities were able to identify the leader of the gang as the perpetrator of a robbery in Elda in June. The suspect is believed to have used a gun to threaten a victim during a robbery in which is stole a mobile phone. After this incident, investigating officers were able to raid the address where the accused was resident. There, they found a large quantity of cocaine, despite the fact that those present in the property at the time of the raid tried to get rid of the drug by throwing it over the balcony. Also seized during the raid was a quantity of cash, a rifle, a machete, a taser

and a variety of paraphernalia for the weighing and distribution of drugs. Three mobile phones were also seized – one of which was stolen during the aforementioned robbery. Officers also found that the man, the gang’s leader, had been extorting a resident of Novelda, for more than three years. Under threat of physical harm to himself or his family, the victim was forced to hand over €1800 per month as repayment for a false debt which he claims was invented by the gang.

Police and Tax Office collaborate to smash international drugs ring A joint operation has been carried out between Spain’s National Police and the Tax Office, collaborating with officials in Morocco and the Dominican Republic. The aim of the operation was to smash an international criminal organisation which used transport companies’ trucks to move large quantities of hashish between countries. 23 people were arrested as a result of the operation – 20 in Spain, two in Morocco and one in the Dominican Republic. As part of the sting, 20 properties with an estimated value of €2 million were seized as well as over €3.5 million in cash, eight high end vehicles and around 16,000 kilos of hashish. National Police, Guardia Civil and tax officials worked with authorities in Morocco and the Dominican Republic with charges now being brought against those involved for crimes against public health (drugs), illicit association, illegal arms possession and money laundering. The investigation has been going on since the end of September 2017 when police intercepted a high end car with €300,000 in cash, in 20 and 50 euro notes, concealed inside. Its driver and owner, a French citizen with a history of drug trafficking offences, could not give the police a reasonable explanation of the origin of that amount of cash and so, a deeper investigation began. Police were able to link the cash to an organisation which, in March, was found to have been attempting to import over 7400kg of hash using agricultural

transport companies. Due to the fact that it was an international criminal organization, a joint research team was created to identify the various members of the organization and its carefully structured hierarchy. After the drugs were imported successfully through trucks and transport companies, the resulting cash was laundered through a network of companies and frontmen in a bid to make it appear legal. Also linked to the gang was a suitcase intercepted in the Dominican Republic which was found to have a false bottom concealing €165,000. This new discovery led investigators to the possibility that part of the drug money was being laundered there too. More cash was discovered in April of last year when officers investigating the gang became suspicious of a lorry transporting ceramic tiles. The vehicle was intercepted and over 7200kg of hash and €177,000 seized. Officers believe that all of these small setbacks prompted the gang to attempt to move all of its illegally obtained cash to safety and in collaboration with the Dominican National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) and the US Anti-Drug Department (DEA), officers found a shipping container with €690,000 concealed inside. Following the cash seizure, Spanish police continued to keep tabs on the gang and known associates and sure enough in July of last year, a large quantity – 1350kg – of hash was seized in

an industrial estate in Seville. This then led to the discovery of a route used by drug mules between Morocco and Seville which resulted in the seizure of €85,000. The operation was not drawn to a close until May 2019 when officers had been able to gather intelligence of over 18

people key to the drug operation. A joint team of investigators from the National Police, Guardia Seville, Customs and the Tax office travelled to the Caribbean. 18 arrests were made, including the head of the organisation, and a large quantity of cash and weapons seized.

Spain rescues 141 migrants in one day A total of 141 migrants from subSaharan Africa were rescued at sea between Spain and Morocco over the course of one day. The Spanish maritime rescue service said 28 women were among the migrants. The Spanish maritime rescue service Salvamento Marítimo on Saturday last rescued a total of 141 migrants at sea between Spain and Morocco, the rescue service said. According to Salvamento Marítimo, the migrants from the sub-Saharan region were trying to cross the Mediterranean on a variety of makeshift vessels. Two boats carrying 86 people were recovered in the Alboran Sea, the stretch of the Mediterranean between Spain and Morocco. A spokesperson for the service said one of the boats was already beginning to sink. Although some of the people were already in the water by the time the rescuers arrived, everyone was rescued, the spokesperson said. Among the 86 migrants were 14 women and three children. Further west, in the Straits of Gibraltar, rescue boats picked up three men in a kayak as well another 52 people, including 14 women, in a dinghy.

14,000 arrivals so far this year Migrants from sub-Saharan Africa like the ones rescued over the weekend are regularly stopped by Moroccan authorities if they try to approach the regular border crossing points at the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in Morocco. As a result, very few subSaharan Africans are able to access the asylum procedure. This drives sub-Saharan Africans to turn to organized crime, hiding in cars, using rafts, or attempting to scale the fence at Ceuta and Melilla to try to gain access to the enclaves. In the process, they are exposed to risks of trafficking and violence.

Since the beginning of this year, close to 14,000 migrants have arrived in Spain, the vast majority of them by sea. According to the latest figures from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 203 people have died attempting the crossing from North Africa. Last year, roughly 65,000 migrants arrived in Spain, up from close to 30,000 in 2017. In the Mediterranean as a whole, 682 have died or are missing attempting the crossing from northern Africa since the beginning of this year. According to IOM, 31,600 migrants have made it to Europe.

Group sex attacks National Police rescue on the rise in Spain 15 year old girl from Campaigners have condemned an alarming rise in sexual assaults carried out by multiple attackers in Spain. Many say that punishments for crimes of this nature are too lenient because of outdated ‘macho’ views held by judges. The figures speak for themselves, according to the Geoviolencia Sexual project – there were 14 group sex attacks in 2017. There were 59 such attacks in 2018, and this year, there were 14 in the first three months of the year alone. Spain’s legislation surrounding rape and other sexual attacks was put under international scrutiny after the ‘Manada’ case – a gang attack on a teenager in 2016 which sparked outrage after the men involved were convicted of sexual abuse but cleared of gang rape. The judge at the time handed down the lesser charge because the teenage victim did not fight back against the five men attacking her. The Supreme Court overturned the original conviction, sentencing the men to 15 years instead of nine and ruling they had indeed raped the teenager. It has been suggested that the rise in group sex attacks being

reported is linked to more victims feeling able to report cases of sexual violence in the wake of the recent #metoo movement and widespread criticism of victim blaming in rape cases. However, under Spanish law, a rape charge must involve specific acts of violence, such as being threatened with a knife or being physically punched. Furthermore, prosecutors continue to invite condemnation in the handling of sex attack cases such as the recent case surrounding the alleged attack on a 14 year old girl by six men in Manresa, in the northeastern region of Catalonia. The young victim of the alleged attack gave a tearful statement in court earlier this month – saying she

felt intimidated during the alleged incident. The men are charged with abusing the girl, who is now 17, when she was just 14 in a disused factory in October 2016. A seventh man is accused of masturbating while watching the alleged attack and failing to help her. Prosecutors faced widespread criticism for arguing that the six men involved in the alleged gang rape should face a lesser charge of ‘sexual abuse’ because the 14 year old victim was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and did not fight back during the attack. The trial, which has been postponed until September, sparked protests all over the country.

traffickers National Police have freed a 15 year old girl as part of an operation to smash a sex trafficking ring in Malaga. A total of eleven people, all of Nigerian nationality, who were part of a criminal gang dedicated to the sexual exploitation of young Nigerian women have been arrested as part of the operation. As well as the young girl, five other women were freed from prostitution. Officers revealed that the women had been forced to work on the streets and in ‘clubs’ along the coast, being ferried to and fro in cars by the gang members. The women were forced into the sex trade both on the streets of Malaga, around industrial estates known for prostitution, and in hostess clubs in Marbella. The gang used four properties where the girls were made to live. They were collected in cars and brought to work on the streets or at hostess clubs in the area. An investigation began in Puerto Banús in Marbella when officers identified a female sex worker whose physical features and behaviour made them suspect that she may be a minor. After further investigation, it was found that the girl was just 15 years of age. She has since been placed under judicial protection. Officers collaborated with the

British National Crime Agency to gather details about the girl, who revealed that her father had died in suspicious circumstances in Nigeria. The girl did not want to cooperate with police as the gang had threatened her not to reveal any information if caught. Despite the lack of cooperation by the girl, officers manage to proceed with the investigation and revealed a Nigerian trafficking gang based in Malaga. Officers revealed that the gang members ‘distributed’ women to various areas of the city. As is common in cases of human trafficking, the women were brought to Spain with a debt incurred. The gang made the women repay the debt by working as prostitutes. They were kept under strict surveillance and control by the gang, living in accommodation provided by the Nigerian men and with a daily

visit by the ‘debt collector’ to take the money they had earned by working on the streets or in hostess clubs. Police revealed that all of the girls, from poor families, were brought illegally by boat from Nigeria under the false promise of a new life in Europe, not knowing that their true destination was to be the sex trade. Charges have been levelled against those arrested including human trafficking, prostitution and falsification of documents. Cash, mobile phones and computers were sized and bank accounts containing around €12,000 were frozen. To report suspicions of human trafficking or to ask for help if you are a victim, police have a free tip line which does not appear on the phone bill: 900 10 50 90. Anonymous reports can also be emailed to trata@policia.es

Two arrested for conning 97 year old woman out of life savings Two people have been arrested in Almoradí for misappropriating over €200,000 form a 97 year old woman in their care. The pair were arrested in Saturday by Guardia Civil. According to police sources, the woman’s bank account was in arrears to the point that her daily expenses were being covered by concerned neighbours, given that she doesn’t have any close relatives. The situation was made worse given the state of neglect of the woman, supposedly being cared for by these people – she even lost coverage of her medical insurance because of non payment of instalments. An investigation began after the woman, from Switzerland originally, reported to police that someone had stolen all of her savings through fraudulent use of her bank account. After looking in to the matter and analyzing documentation provided by the bank, officers verified that the fraudsters were actually people the woman had hired as

carers after her husband and son had passed away. The pair withdrew more than €200,000 from the bank account of the complainant between 2012 and 2018. The defendants took advantage of the vulnerability of the woman and conned her in to adding them as authorised persons on her bank account. This gave them full access to her account and allowed them to withdraw funds freely. In addition, to hinder a possible investigation and not raise suspicions, the pair opened up five other bank accounts to move the money continuously between them. The two, aged 57 and 30 and of Spanish nationality, were charged with bank fraud and of falsifying documents. Both have already been brought before the judge and provisionally released while they await trial. The Judicial Authority has been requested a freeze on the five bank accounts held by the pair as well as an embargo on four properties and three vehicles.

Eye Health Advice for Grandparents Grandparents are taking a more and more active role in caring for their grandchildren and offer so much love, support and help for their families, which is why they are recognised on National Grandparents Day on July 26th. To celebrate all their hard work and give back to them, Specsavers Ópticas are offering the following eye health advice for grandparents and will be offering advice and a 30% discount in store on glasses from 89€ range and above on this special day. How to protect older eyes Good vision is essential for living a full life and keeping up with the grandchildren. Specsavers Ópticas advises everyone over the age of 80 to have an eye test at least once a year as older eyes are susceptible to certain changes which can be detected during an eye test. Some of the most common issues to affect the eyes after the age of 65include cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. So be aware of any changes in your vision and visit your optician as soon as you notice any changes. Glaucoma is caused by a buildup of fluid within the eye, which increases pressure and damages

the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. If not caught and treated early, this causes permanent vision loss, yet as vision damage occurs gradually it can be hard to spot without an eye test. Make sure you are getting your eyes tested regularly. Check that itincludes aneye pressure test (tonometry)which can identify glaucoma in the early stages and that your optician uses the latest technology to ensure

that the eyes are healthy. Looking after your Grandchildren’s Eyes If you are looking after your grandchildren on a regular basis, you need to think about how to keep their eyes healthy and protect against injuries. Here are a few important tips to follow: Protect their eyes when playing sports –Sport-related injuries are the biggest single cause of accidental eye injury in children. High-risk sports and activities are the main culprits such as anything

using small fast projectiles, contact sports and cycling. We recommend that children or adults who are taking part in any activities, considered high risk, should wear protective eye wear. Choose toys carefully –Many toys can causeeye injuries including scratches to the cornea, ulcers, traumatic cataracts, bleeding and retinal detachment. Specsavers Ópticas advise against buying toys which shoot dangerous projectiles such as bullets, darts or balls, toy wands, swords and laser pointers. Limit Screen Time – Across the nine Specsavers Ópticas stores in Spain we have noticed an increase in eye problems, particularly short-sightedness, in children and believe it could be related to the excessive use of digital devices. We advise you to limit screen time, make sure that kids get plenty of time outside and that they have regular eye tests from the age of six to maintain good vision. Comprehensive eye tests including health checks are free at Specsavers Ópticas. For more eye health information for you or your grandchildren, pop into your nearest store on National Grandparents Day or see the eye health section of the website www.specsavers.es

Three injured in Torrevieja crash A serious car accident which took place on Sunday in Torrevieja town centre has left here people injured. The accident occurred on Avenida Gregorio Marañón when one car left the road and crashed into the front of an adjacent building. Three people were seriously injured in the accident which took place at 04.30 in the morning, when a car that was travelling in the direction of Cartagena -

to leave the town centre - left the road, collided with another vehicle and ending up embedded in the facade of a building. Three people are in serious condition, including a 33-year-old woman with multiple injuries, who was treated at the scene by a SAMU ambulance crew before being transferred to the University Hospital of Torrevieja.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP It was another difficult week for the pound and once again, Brexit was causing the pressure. While Mark Carney confirmed that the banking system would “continue to serve UK households and businesses” in the no-deal, worst case scenarios, the market was not reassured. The Office of Budget Responsibility warned this week that while the banks may survive a no-deal scenario, the resulting economic fallout may cause a recession. Cross-party calls for a six-month extension to Article 50, a vote against no-deal and a move from the House of Lords to prevent parliament shutting down while the departure is forced through did little to calm investors’ nerves. While the pound held steady mid-week, it was mostly struggling and there was little in the latest crop of statistics to provide any assistance. Even positive statistics failed to make an impact; unemployment remained at 3.8%, a 44-year low and wage growth continued to accelerate, widening the gap with inflation for a 16th consecutive month but sterling still lost half a US cent after the numbers were announced. Headline UK inflation was unchanged and on target at 2.0% and the core reading was steady at 1.8%. The government's house price index portrayed a 4.4% annual decline in London

against the background of a 1.2% rise nationally. It seems for now, all eyes are on parliament as investors await the results of the Conservative Party leadership contest and an indication of what might happen next on Brexit. Until that becomes clear, the pound is likely to remain volatile and under pressure. EUR It was a relatively quiet week for the euro. Economic sentiment in Germany was three and a half points softer at 24.5 while the current situation collapsed nine points to -1.1. Across Europe as a whole, economic sentiment was roughly steady at -20.3. Inflation across the continent came in slightly higher than forecast at 1.3% but investors did not see this as significant enough to anticipate a change in direction from the European Central Bank (ECB). The expectation is that another round of monetary stimulus is forthcoming and this remains the most significant influence on the euro.

Los Montesinos Local police seize counterfeit goods Local police in Los Montesinos have seized around 300 counterfeit products found on sale at the town’s weekly market. The mayor of Los Montesinos, José Manuel Butrón, reported that at Friday’s street market, Local Police officers seized over 300 allegedly counterfeit products. Butrón thanked the efforts of the officers in putting an end to this type of illegal trade which negatively

affects local commerce. Officers seized the goods, mostly underwear and t-shirts of ‘designer’ brands, and have samples to the court for investigation and analysis. The rest of the packages are being stored securely in municipal offices pending the resolution of the court which could eventually lead to the destruction of the goods.

How to make a pension last a lifetime: The essential guide to financial success in retirement • Four years ago, a rule change had dramatic consequences for retirees • The reforms, known as 'pension freedoms', gave flexibility around spending • This means people can opt for something called drawdown, where you keep your money invested in shares and funds and take out income when you need it

F

our years ago, the Government brought in a rule change that had dramatic consequences for retirees. The reforms, known as 'pension freedoms', gave savers unprecedented flexibility around how they spend their hard‐earned cash in retirement. But with that freedom comes a huge responsibility to ensure you do not run out of money and end up living on the poverty line in old age. Before the rule change, most people simply bought an annuity, which is like an insurance policy that guarantees to provide a set income for life. While this is still an option — and for many people a wise choice — those who feel confident managing their own investments can instead now opt for something called drawdown, where you keep your money invested in shares and funds and take out an income as and when you need it. There is an alternative to managing your own funds, and that is where Seagate Wealth are on hand to help you make the right choices for you and your family. We can provide you with dedicated pensions solutions that offer a comprehensive range of investments coupled with local experience and expertise in a well‐ regulated, tax efficient manner. Careful planning — with the help of an adviser — means taking your money efficiently. When you have worked hard all your life for your money and it has not been handed to you on a plate, you deserve to enjoy it. Gardening in the heat

W

ith the searing Spanish temperatures during July and August, productive garden may seem like a mere dream. However there are several easy tricks that can keep your plants cool, productive, and even lessen your water usage. Install windbreakers Wind blowing through your garden can not only damage plants but also causes soil moisture to evaporate. The easy solution to this is to install or grow garden. your in windbreakers Windbreakers don’t need to be solid and stop all the wind. They can be quickly made from pallet fencing. If you’d like living tall consider windbreakers annual crops, shorter perrenials that won’t shade your garden too much like berry bushes or dwarf fruit trees depending on your space, or hedge species. These should be placed perpendicular to the usual direction of the wind. Invest in or DIY some shade sails Shade sails can be really helpful for keeping those cools season plants like peas and spinach producing longer. It can also be used over new new transplants that are adjusting to field conditions or seeds like lettuce that prefer cool soils to germinate. Use a lot of mulch Mulch is one of the easiest ways to keep soil temperatures cooler and moisture levels up. Plus mulch cuts down on the weeding. Great mulch options include grass clippings, straw, hay, or old leaves all of which can be

or cardboard with combined newspaper. Water your garden consistently. Your watering schedule will obviously be unique to your garden but you should work hard to maintain moist soil conditions. Waiting for plants to start wilting before you realize it’s time to water harms your plants’ health and reduces your harvest. Water at the right times Watering consistently is half the battle but you should also try to water at the best times of day. The early morning and evening are the best

times to water. Less water is wasted to evaporation because it has a chance to soak into the soil before it’s exposed to the mid-day sun and heat. Practice interplanting like plants vining Growing

watermelons, cucumbers, gourds, squashes, sweet potatoes, and nasturiums under taller plants like corn, sorghum, and sunflowers can help you make the most of your space and keep the soil cool. The vining plants will shade the soil, block weeds, and hold moisture once they’re mature enough. Transplant at the right time If you’re transplanting crops into your garden it’s best to avoid the heat and sun as much as possible, for your sake and the plant’s! Transplant in the early morning, late evening, or on a cloudy day for best results. The plants will suffer less transplant shock that way. Choose crops wisely If you live in an area with hot summer temperatures it’s a good time to start direct seeding crops that can handle the heat. These include plants like watermelon, okra and lima beans. Practice good soil and crop management Whenever gardening you should be thinking about keeping your soil and therefore your plants healthy. Doing maintenance work like crop rotation, cover cropping, and applying compost will keep your soil and plants healthy. Well nourished, disease free plants will tolerate the stress of hot weather much better than those already struggling. Gardening is never easy but hot weather can be especially tough on you and your plants. Follow these tips for a healthy and productive garden even in hot, dry weather.

Instagrammers Man stabs ex girlfriend fall foul of toxic and mother in law lake Several avid ‘Instagrammers’ have fallen ill after swimming in Monte Neme – a toxic lake in Galicia. It appears that many people have mistaken the turquoise waters for an instagrammable lake – however, Monte Neme is an abandoned quarry, which was in use from 1975 to 1980, and was once connected to a tungsten mine. The unusual bright blue colour of the water is actually a result of chemical contamination. Environmental journalist Ramon Varela commented, "Beyond the health problems that can result from recreational activities in a mining lake, it is a personal security problem because there may be falls, even fatalities.”

He and many others have called on the regional government of Galicia to put security measures in place and to prohibit entry to the area to prevent serious accidents. Instagrammers who had mistakenly swam in the lake – which is easy to access – have been reporting skin irritation and stomach problems. An image of the reservoir was even used in an advert for tourism in the region. "This is a mining landscape, which is devastated and unrestored but Galicia used it to promote tourism in the region as if it were an idyllic landscape," Varela said.

A man in the northern Costa Blanca town of Dénia stabbed his ex girlfriend and ex mother in law, before attempting suicide by drinking ‘agua fuerte’ – a hydrochloric acid used as a household cleaner. The man later died in hospital. The man, who was found by police after he fled to his own home after the stabbing, broke into his ex girlfriend’s house through a window and is believed to have hidden for several hours under a bed. The relationship broke down a year ago after the pair had dated for around nine months - there were no previous complaints of mistreatment. The 32 year old man was discovered hiding under a bed in the early hours of the morning, an argument ensued and he attacked his 26 year old ex girlfriend. Her 43 year old mother came to her defence and also received stab wounds, just millimetres from her heart. Fortunately, both victims survived the attack. The man fled to his own home where it is believed he drank acid in an attempt to take his own life. The 26 year old had been out with her family to have ice cream on Tuesday night. She returned home and, unaware that her ex was hiding under

the bed with a knife, went to sleep at around 1.30am. Her cousin, also sleeping in the same room, heard noises at around 4.30am and woke the victim. The man was discovered and an argument ensued. He produced a knife that he had been carrying and is alleged to have attacked the 26 year old. She sustained defensive injuries and when her mother stepped in to defend her, the older woman was also stabbed. Two children, aged 7 and 9, were at home at the time of the attack but were not involved. The family called 112 at around 5am to report the attack. Police found the victim with knife wounds to both arms and her mother with severe bleeding due to a stab wound to an artery. Both were taken by ambulance to hospital. This latest gender violence attack comes just a week after an Elche woman was murdered by her partner at the family home. The victim assistance telephone number, 016, is available 24 hours a day in 51 languages. It does not appear on the phone bill, although it must be manually deleted from the phone’s call history.

Housing rise in coastal Spain The rise in the price of housing on the Spanish coast is becoming more widespread. Almost four out of every five municipalities, the houses became more expensive between the first quarter of 2018 and the first quarter of 2019. Although the largest increase, 24.4 percent, was in Baiona (Pontevedra), the Mediterranean coast concentrates most of the 45 municipalities where prices have risen more than 10 percent yearon-year. This is clear from the report Housing in Costa 2019, prepared by the appraiser Tinsa, which analysed the evolution of prices, operations and visas of new construction in 159 coastal locations with more than 10,000 inhabitants.

The report also includes a reactivation of the construction on the coast. Last year only new works were identified in progress in half of the municipalities, this year that extends to 57 percent. But at the same time, the housing stock has decreased : in four out of ten locations a significant stock of available flats is not seen, something that last year only affected two out of ten. Apart from the capitals, which have more operations due to their size, Torrevieja and Orihuela (both in Alicante Province) and Mijas (Malaga) are the coastal towns where last year a greater number of permits were approved for the construction of new homes. The report highlights that the pressure of demand, due to the

recovery of domestic buyers, is a factor that pushes up prices. The same phenomenon caused the share of foreign buyers to fall slightly and be at 15 percent. The British, who are the main claimants of housing on the Spanish coast , are still under the threat of a hard Brexti that "would entail with a high probability a depreciation of the pound that would adversely affect the purchasing power" according to Rafael Gil, director of the Servicio de Appraiser's studies. But for the moment in the last year it has not been noticed. If in 2017 the purchases of houses on the coast by citizens of the United Kingdom fell slightly, last year they rebounded and recovered the levels of 2015 and 2016.

Welcome to Saint

Saint Martin is an island in the northeast Caribbean Sea, approximately 300 km east of Puerto Rico. Saint Martin has a land area of 87 km2, 53 km2 of which is under the sovereignty of France, and 34 km2 under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of the Netherlands

legend, Columbus sighted and perhaps anchored at the island of Saint Martin on November 11, 1493, the feast day of Saint Martin of Tours. At Columbus' time, St. Martin was populated, if at all, by Carib amerindians. The former Arawaks had been chased by

Sint Maarten, and a popular story among locals narrates that "to divide the island into two sections Climate: The island has a tropical monsoon climate with a dry season from January to April and a rainy season from August to December. The precipitation patterns are due to the movement of the Azores high during the year. Economy: The main industry of the island is tourism. In 2000, the island had about one million visitors annually. About 85% of the workforce was engaged in the tourist industry.

The main cities are Philipsburg (Dutch side) and Marigot (French side). The Dutch side is more heavily populated. The largest settlement on the entire island is Lower Prince's Quarter, on the Dutch side. History: In 1493, explorer Columbus Christopher embarked on his second voyage to the New World on behalf of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella I of Spain. According to

English is the most commonly spoken language along with a local dialect. Shopping: Shopping on St Maarten and Saint Martin offers duty-free goods in numerous boutiques. Wedding dilemma

He still has a hold on me

My fiancé and I are planning our wedding for next Summer. There is one family friend who is a nightmare and usually ends up making a scene. I absolutely do not want this person at our wedding. We haven’t seen him or his wife for many years anyway. If he comes he will embarrass everyone. He once got up and made a drunk speech at a wedding when he wasn’t even part of the wedding party.

I split with my ex-boyfriend 7 months ago because he was mentally abusive. I put up with his behaviour for far too long and am trying to move on. My family and friends were telling me for years that I was badly treated, but I didn’t listen because I loved him. I finally found the courage to leave, having had lots of therapy. The problem is he won’t leave me alone. He phones and sends hurtful and insulting messages to my phone and on Facebook. I bump in to him at our local pub, and so there doesn’t seem to be any escape.

I think as it’s your day you should definitely have a say in who is invited. However, if your parents are paying for the wedding it might be difficult for them to leave people out. Talk to your Mum and Dad about it and explain your fears. As you've not seen this couple for years and they are not family, you could always say you are cutting down on the number of guests generally because your husband has a big family, so it's family first - that way you can make cuts without offending.

Well, there’s only one thing to do - don‘t take his calls any more. Bar his telephone number from your phone, and also de-friend him from Facebook. Choose another local pub to go to instead. You can avoid him if you want to. However, if his behaviour persists you can get the Police involved. In certain circumstances you can apply for a restraining order - a solicitor can help you with this.what's going on at school, and go along to any after school activities. This is a good way to make friends.

Thanks to its #YoSoyTorrevieja movement, Habaneras Shopping Centre, has made significant strides in increasing public awareness and in cleaning up our beaches, seas and oceans. It is a summerlong commitment comprising a variety of campaigns and activities. This initiative by Habaneras has prompted many residents of Torrevieja and its visitors to participate in this important cause, collaborating in clean-up campaigns on our beaches and collecting large amounts of plastics and waste. So far, more than 140kg of plastic waste has been deposited in the large white shark sculpture at the entrance of the shopping centre. Throughout July, shoppers will continue to have the opportunity to participate in the bike raffle and children can continue to take part in the fun and educational ‘Shark Patrol’ eco-workshops and drawing contest to win one of the shark plush-toy mascots of the campaign. In addition, the ‘Shark Patrol’

will also visit the beaches of Torrevieja every Friday this summer, just like it was on La Mata beach last week, handing out bags for the collection of plastic waste. Conscious of the equal importance of beach clean-ups and awareness campaigns, Habaneras has prepared an innovative virtual reality experience for its customers, giving them a glimpse of the consequences of the irresponsible use of plastics and their impact on the biodiversity of our seas, putting many species in serious danger of extinction. During this underwater trip, Habaneras will invite its customers to experience the feeling of being submerged in the ocean, discovering its spectacular flora and fauna and coming into contact with pufferfish, turtles, starfish and many other species that are, unfortunately, seriously threatened by the amount of litter in our oceans.

Customers can also help preserve the ocean by collecting all of the waste that they encounter during the experience. Habaneras Shopping Centre aims to make its customers aware of the importance of safeguarding the biodiversity of the sea and caring for our beaches. Because we are all a part of Torrevieja, #YosoyTorrevieja And you? Upcoming Shark Patrol Workshops: - July 26th: Playa de Cabo Cervera. - August 2nd: Playa de Los Locos. - August 9th: Playa del Cura. - August 16th: Piscinas naturales de Juan Aparicio. - August 23: Playa de Los Náufragos. -August 30th: Cala Piteras.

PULLMANTUR HORIZON with GandiaTours CASABLANCA The most valued Moroccan architectural heritage If someone says Morocco, surely the first thing that comes to mind is the city of Casablanca, one of the most beloved and recognized cities in the world. Indeed it is presented as the African metropolis par excellence. Casablanca is a city full of treasures and places to discover, so walking this land will be one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. Fascinating Moroccan architecture and the charm of its streets, coupled with the friendliness and proximity of its inhabitants, will make you fall in love with Casablanca as soon as you get off the ship. This Moroccan city is one of the most exciting and sophisticated in all of Africa and you'll be able to experience it for yourself from the first minute. For example, it has its own twin towers in the socalled Twin Center. They are more than 100 meters high and around them a modern and striking

neighborhood has been established with various luxury shops and international brands. We are sure it is an ideal tourist destination which will allow you to disconnect from your daily routine, get to know new cultures and glimpse the recognizable beauty of all its neighborhoods. For this reason, do not forget to visit some prominent sites such as Bank Al Maghrib, the central building of the Bank of Morocco. Designed by the architect Brion, it was built in 1920. Then there's Dar el Makhzen, the residence of the Caid, one of the chiefs of Casablanca. Porto The port for wine lovers North of the coast of Portugal, on the right side of the beautiful estuary where the River Douro flows, you will find Porto, the second largest city of this wonderful country. Historically, Porto has enjoyed great economic strength which has resulted in the

construction of monumental buildings and bridges. So on the whole, this city is a paradise for lovers of architecture, engineering and, of course, good wine. The already mighty Douro approaches the Atlantic Ocean as if it wants to unite with it at all cost and greatly widens its passage through Porto. Put another way, it opens to the immensity of the ocean and allows the salty waters to mix with the sweet waters from the peninsula. A geographical quirk that allowed the arrival of many people has marked the history of the city and the character of its inhabitants. Of all these, the English are undoubtedly the most important as they endowed the city with the relevance as the capital of Portuguese wine which it still enjoys today.

Lisbon The beautiful city of seven hills Do you want to discover a wonderful destination with a unique and very special look? Lisbon is one of them, and you will discover this fantastic city on the Getaway to Portugal and Morocco cruise with Pullmantur. An enclave with a fantastic atmosphere, it deserves to be discovered from start to finish. One of the most striking aspects of Lisbon is that it has seven hills, a fact that certainly brings a very unique and special profile to the city. The Portuguese capital is full of stories, many of them told through various monuments and museums. This is an environment that has undergone many changes over time but never lost its essence. In Lisbon you will enjoy a warm climate throughout the year which makes it a perfect city to visit at any time. Both day and night there will be plenty to see and do, for adults

and for children. There is no room or time for boredom. A marvel! Tangier Enjoy the Moroccan Tangier, the favorite city of conquerors and artists The southwest corner of this place is where the legendary Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean converge to form the Strait of Gibraltar. From this rises the radiant Tangier, one of the most unique and most touristic cities of northern Morocco and a great stop on this Pullmantur cruise. The strategic and beautiful location of the Bay of Tangier is been the main reason that, throughout its more than 3600 years of history, voyages to Tangier have been made by the Carthaginians, Vandals, Romans, Phoenicians, Arabs and, more recently, the Spanish, French, English and Portuguese. Although Tangier is a port of Atlantic cruises, its climate and culture are Mediterranean. For this reason, any time of the year is good for traveling here. Make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy its excellent gastronomy, an exciting fusion of the Mediterranean diet with Arab spices and culinary preparations. Cs want overcrowding addressed in Almoradí Almoradí’s Cs party presented a motion this week to call on the eradication against overcrowding and high rent. The party claim that currently in the town Almoradí, it is not difficult to find buildings with a high concentration of tenants and even some properties attached directly to the power line showing the precarious conditions in which people are living. The objective of the motion, explained the party, is to avoid the degradation generated by the overcrowded flats or as they are known locally ‘pisos pateras’. A piso patera, its name derived from the type of overcrowded boats used to smuggle immigrants to Spain, is not unlike the boat from which the name is

against the human rights of the occupants. The party says that what it is proposing with this motion is

what the Secretary of State has already assured. Consuelo Rumí, of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party, has already claimed that the Government will introduce regulations to "sanctions to the landlords that promote or allow patera flats". In addition, Almudena Albentosa, spokesperson for Cs Almoradí claims that: "The Housing Law already allows for fines for overcrowding and it is up to the city councils to execute it. We requested a meeting with political parties, social workers and community managers at a local level to agree on solutions. We need a technical review or agreement with the Local Police to assess the habitability conditions of these flats.”

Police at Barcelona’s El Prat airport arrested a Colombian man found to have hidden half a kilo of cocaine under his toupee. The man aroused suspicions because of his nervous demeanour and the ‘height’ of the wig and hat perched on the top of his head. The man was travelling on a flight from Bogotá, Colombia, to Barcelona – a flight which is always on the radar for potential drug trafficking. Police are more meticulous with passenger checks on this route due to the prevalence of drug mules used to import cocaine into the country. Mules usually carry drugs in their luggage or even inside their own bodies.

A search of the man in this instance found a sealed package, glued to his head and concealed under his wig. The package contained around €30,000 worth of cocaine. The Mossos, Guardia Civil and Police operate a joint operation against drug trafficking in El Prat and over the last six months alone, have seized 5000 kilos of cocaine.

IS YOUR HOME OVERPRICED? 3 REASONS WHY BUYERS WON’T MAKE YOU AN OFFER.

Rebecca Serwotka

3

. Buyers assume the seller has already turned down a sensible offer. Heard the saying never assume? Buyers would much rather walk away from a home than go through tough negotiations. What they don’t realize is, the overpriced home may have never had an offer in the first place!

If your home has been up for sale for an extended period of time, chances are the market it telling you, it’s probably overpriced! In all honesty a property is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, so coming to the market above current value, may not do you any favours in attracting the right buyer. Here are 3reasons why buyers don’t make offers on overpriced homes:

1

. They don’t want to offend you! As ridiculous as it may seem, this is the number one reason. After touring through your home and being told about the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into your property, not forgetting pointing out quality and location (to try to justify your price), the buyer can feel embarrassed about their offer, however realistic it may be. And to make it easy on their own conscience, is to just walk away, rather than make an offer that could be declined. No one likes to feel like they’ve been turned down. That’s just human nature. . Buyers wrongly believe the sellers know their home is overpriced. They think that if they were willing to take a lower figure, they would have reduced the asking price.

2

Everyone likes to think their home is worth every penny of their asking price, but ultimately, it is the market that will decide that figure! Buying or selling your home? Enjoy the journey!

Bingeworthy Box Sets Dear White People Based on the acclaimed film of the same name, this Netflix-original series follows a group of students of color at Winchester University, a predominantly white Ivy League college. The students are faced with a landscape of cultural bias, social injustice, misguided activism and slippery politics. Through an absurdist lens, the series uses irony, self-deprecation, brutal honesty and humor to highlight issues that still plague today's"post-racial" society. Creator Justin Simien serves as an executive producer.

24 Counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer fights the bad guys of the world, a day at a time. With each week's episode unfolding in real time, "24" covers a single day in the life of Bauer each season. Jack deals with assassination attempts, nuclear attacks, bioterrorism, torture, traitors, sleeper cells, other bad guys and the alarming tendency for his romances to end badly -- very badly.

Two arrested in Alicante for enslaving mentally disabled man Police in Alicante have arrested two fugitives, wanted in Portugal for exploiting mentally disabled person. The victim was made to sell balloons and toys at fairs around the Alicante region but was not paid and was made to live in deplorable conditions. The two, aged 47 and 58 and both of Portuguese nationality, were being sought by authorities in Portugal after being convicted in June of this year and sentenced to 15 years in prison for illegal detention and human trafficking. The victim in this instance was mentally disabled and was exploited by the pair, made to work at fairs and festivals without pay and kept in slavelike conditions for more than ten months. Portuguese authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant on July 4th and Spanish police were able to apprehend the pair just nine days later in Alicante. The suspects have been placed under the custody

of the Central Court of Instruction and await extradition to Portugal. The pair are believed to have befriended the mentally disabled man with who had no job or place to live. They offered him the chance to work as a street vendor and promised him good pay. The man accepted the offer and moved with the pair to the Alicante area where he was put to work in slave like conditions, “without receiving any money for his work, without the possibility of using a telephone, subsisting in degrading conditions and without any hygiene, according to the sentencing statements read out in court. If the man refused to work or complained about the living conditions, he was physically attacked or threatened with death. After ten and a half months of hell, the victim managed to escape and return to his native Braganza in

Portugal. The pair tracked him down, forced him to drink alcohol and brought him back to Alicante. However, a few days later he managed to once again escape and this time, asked for help. According to the Portuguese court ruling, the defendants took advantage of the victim's personal situation to force him to work and exploited him, keeping him in a situation of dependence, forced to live in terrible conditions and controlled him at all times through intimidation, threats and violence. In addition to these arrests, National Police also apprehended two other fugitives this week in Alicante and Elche. A woman was arrested in Elche; wanted in France to serve a seven-year prison sentence for property scams. A man also was arrested in Alicante, wanted in Serbia in relation to a marijuana plantation.

For the sixteenth year running, Steve and IreneMaria Campbell will be leading the Club at La Siesta Church beginning on Thursday 25th July at 10.30am to 12.30pm. It continues each Thursday until 22nd August for children of four years and over. The best part is it’s all FREE! At the end of the session we close with juice and biscuits before they all head home. MAGNETS began in 2004 in the Campbell’s apartment with just three sisters in attendance. Since then it has grown and over the past 16 years around 300 children have attended, with many returning year after year. There have always been new children coming each year so Steve and Irene-Maria are looking forward to seeing new faces as well as

familiar friends. Tell all your friends and come along on Thursday 25th July at 10.30am and be Ready for Action!

Eazylawns is the leading specialist in the trend for artificial grass that is taking the costas by storm. Forget 80s astro‐turf and cheap‐looking plastic turf, Eazylawns provides high quality artificial lawns that are so realistic no‐one can tell the difference from real grass. Eazylawns was born of necessity; A client was looking for a solution to the common problem in Spain – how to make a lawn green and keep it green. Through the businesses extensive experience in garden maintenance, the team put together a program of watering, scarifying, fertilising, hollow‐tining and cutting. This method was extremely costly, time consuming and far from fool‐ proof. Then they considered artificial grass. Eazylawns sourced several different types and were not impressed. Most of what they saw looked totally unrealistic and the level of service and expertise left more than a little to be desired. This

inspired the team to develop its own product. Eazylawns products are produced in the UK and the business covers the Costa Blanca, although it has undertaken projects as far afield as Valencia and Marbella. The business offers a free full consultation and quotation service and works closely with each customer on the design and installation process. Once agreed, the installation is prompt

and efficient, leaving the site clean and tidy. Artificial grass is safe and has a low abrasion index, providing a soft landing if there should be an

accident. It is realistic and can be adapted to all areas, surfaces, uses and budgets and it comes with an eight yearmanufacturers guarantee. Put simply artificial lawns are practical, environmentally friendly, cost effective and convenient. Added to that is the sheer quality and realistic look of this product, it really does have to be seen to be believed. So, whether it’s a tennis court, putting green, communal lawn, picnic area or private garden, Eazylawns will make sure your grass is greener all year round. In addition to artificial turf, Eazylawns offers a complete garden design service, this includes: paths and patios, planting, irrigation systems, borders, outside lighting, and rockeries. Trump’s racist tweets condemned THE US HOUSE of Representatives has formally voted to condemn President Donald Trump for his attacks on four Democratic congresswomen, describing his recent tweets as racist. The official condemnation has no legal ramifications for the president and the vote was mostly partisan with Democrats backing the rebuke en masse. Republicans rallied around the President, but four of his own party did join in condemning Trump for “racist comments

that have legitimised and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of colour”. The issue surrounds Trump’s recent tweets telling a group of progressive Democratic congresswomen of colour to “go back” to other countries. The resolution also takes the president to task for “referring to immigrants and asylum seekers as ‘invaders’”. It further criticises him for “saying that

Members of Congress who are immigrants (or those of our colleagues who are wrongly assumed to be immigrants) do not belong in Congress or in the United States of America”. The four congresswomen – all but one of whom were born in the US – are of Hispanic, Arab, Somali and AfricanAmerican descent. Trump, however, has stuck by his comments, tweeting “Our Country is Free,

Beautiful and Very Successful. If you hate our Country, or if you are not happy here, you can leave!”

Condemning the “so-called vote” as a “Democrat con game,” Trump urged Republicans not to “show ‘weakness’ and fall into their trap.” “Those Tweets were NOT Racist. I don’t have a Racist bone in my body!” Trump said. “This should be a vote on the filthy language, statements and lies told by the Democrat Congresswomen, who I truly believe, based on their actions, hate our Country,” he wrote. Trump’s repeated attacks appear to be aimed at galvanising his mostly white electoral base ahead of the 2020 presidential vote.

Holiday falls prompt government warning A spate of fatal holiday falls has sparked a government warning to Britons visiting Spain this summer. In its official travel advice for the country, the UK Foreign Office now includes a specific warning

about 'balcony falls'. Earlier this month, 19-year-old Luke Freeman, from Berkshire, died after falling from a balcony at a resort in Costa Brava, while in June 20-year-old rugby player Freddie Pring, from Somerset, was killed in a fall from a hotel balcony in Magaluf. In 2016, 21-year-old Danielle Hall, from Hexham, fell to her death from a ninth-floor balcony while on holiday in Benidorm with her boyfriend and his family. The warning reads: "There have been a number of very serious accidents (some fatal) as a result of falls from balconies. Many of these incidents have involved

British nationals and have had a devastating impact on those involved and their loved ones. "Don’t take unnecessary risks around balconies, particularly if you’re under the influence of drink or drugs.

"Your travel insurance may not cover you for incidents that take place on a balcony or if you were under the influence of drink or drugs when it happened. "You should familiarise yourself with the layout of your hotel and accommodation block when you arrive. Always follow the safety advice of your hotel and/or tour operator if staying in a room with a balcony and watch out for friends who may be at risk. "Some local councils will impose fines to those caught behaving irresponsibly on balconies or jumping from balconies into swimming pools." Meanwhile, reports in the UK

media have claimed that tour operators have ordered hotels not to put guests in rooms where the balcony barrier is lower than 1.1 metres, or where there are gaps in railings that could be used for climbing. Francisco Gene, director of the Menorca Binibeca Hotel, said: "TUI and Jet2 rules mean no British guests can stay in rooms with balconies that don’t meet new height requirements. "In places like Magaluf in Majorca there have been a lot of accidents, usually after guests have been drinking and climb over to friends’ rooms. It happens every month in peak season. Now if guests insist on a room they shouldn't have we make them sign a disclaimer about the balcony." A TUI UK spokesperson said: "Customer safety is our top priority. We work closely with hotel partners to ensure balconies meet recommended guidelines." A Jet2 Holidays spokesperson said: "We constantly review health and safety and balcony safety is very much part of that." According to the Association of British Travel Agents, 11 people died in a three-month period last year as a result of falling from a balcony.

Rojales Council continues collaboration with horse rescue centre

A group of young people, aged between 16 and 21 years old, belonging to the JOOP Programme (Jove Oportunitat) designed and organised by the IVAJ (Institut Valencià de la Joventut) and financed by the European Social Fund, recently had the opportunity to visit the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Foundation, located in the municipality of Rojales. These young people who do not have academic qualifications or work experience, visited as part of this motivational and guidance programme. The boys and girls, together with the Town Council technician and their teacher, were able to see the great work that the Centre carries out by rescuing and caring for 120 horses, ponies and donkeys that have been abandoned and/or mistreated. This programme is a second chance for these young people just like at the Rescue Centre where all the animals have a second chance at life too.

Miriam Ferrández, Rojales group teacher affirmed “This visit has helped them to become aware of the importance of caring for and respecting animals, and in some of them, the idea of participating as volunteers has been aroused, something that is very positive, given that their profiles are of young people who do not study or work.” One of the participants said “It was very nice to be able to touch the animals and be with them, but at the same time it was very sad to hear their stories and to know that there are people who treat animals like that. Luckily there are places like this where they are helped and are happy again.” And another student said “I've always liked animals, I do not understand that there are people capable of hurting them or abandoning them. I would like to volunteer here.” EHCRC was very excited that they had

chosen to visit the Centre and very encouraged to see how interested the young people were in the animals and how concerned they were about the abuse and neglect that the animals had suffered. Employment is a big issue in the area and EHCRC currently employ three local people but they could do so much more for the local community and the 120 equines in their care as well as for animal welfare in general if the funding was available to employ more people. Rojales council are incredibly supportive and are continuing to pursue possibilities to include EHCRC in Employment and Tourism opportunities. Should funding become available maybe one or more of these young people could end up working at the Centre in the future!

On the topic of Tourism, the Rescue Centre is currently number 1 on Trip Advisor’s List of Things To Do in Rojales. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_ Review-g1064248-d10783249-ReviewsEasy_Horse_Care_Rescue_Centre-Rojales _Costa_Blanca_Province_of_Alicante_Val enci.html Also the Centre is now receiving more visitors from far afield including holiday makers who are on cruises and dock in Alicante and if the date doesn’t coincide with an Open Day then they can easily organise a Private Tour. EHCRC is also now appearing in some in flight magazines like Flybe. If you would like to find out more information on visiting, supporting and donating then check out their website http://easyhorsecare.net/

China bans ‘Beijing bikini’ A sight that is not uncommon on the Costa Blanca is that of men rolling up their tops to combat the high temperatures. However, officials in China are trying to ban the practice. Authorities in the Chinese city of Jinan have taken steps to ban the so called ‘Beijing bikini’ as temperatures soar this summer. The practice of men rolling their tshirts above their stomachs in a bid to stay cool is frowned upon by officials trying to clamp down on ‘uncivilised’ bare bellies. The so-called ‘Beijing bikini’ was deemed "uncivilised" by authorities in the city of Jinan. The cooling method of rolling the tshirt above the stomach is said to be based on a theory in traditional Chinese medicine, where exposing one's midriff helps air out of the warm "chi" energy around the internal organs. But authorities in Jinan, a city of around 8.7 million people in Shandong province, have ordered people not to adapt their tops into Beijing bikinis. The notice also states that members of the public should not remove their shirts while outside. Jinan authorities made the demand as temperatures rose to a sweltering 36C in the city this week. Politicians are aiming to rectify such "uncivilised behaviour" with, according to the notice, people in the city complaining about the "uncivilised phenomenon".

Korean chilli, sesame & honey chicken • 12 chicken thighs, boneless and skinless • 2 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp sesame oil • thumb-sized piece ginger, grated • 4 spring onions, sliced For the glaze • 4 tbsp Korean chilli paste (gochujang) or use a mixture of 3 tbsp ketchup and 1 tbsp sriracha chilli sauce • 2 tbsp honey • juice ½ lime • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tsp sesame oil • 2 tbsp sesame seeds Toss the chicken in the soy sauce, sesame oil and ginger. Thread each thigh on two long metal skewers, so that each skewer pierces one side of the thigh. Keep threading the chicken, making sure it’s packed onto the skewers tightly. Chill until you’re ready to cook. Mix the

Heat the BBQ. If using a coal BBQ, wait for the coals to turn ashen before you start cooking. Cook the kebab for 5-8 mins on each side (depending on the heat). Once nicely charred but not fully cooked through, start painting on the glaze. The honey will catch if cooked for too long – the key to nice sticky chicken is applying the glaze in layers, turning the kebab often. Once the glaze has been used up and the chicken is cooked through (it’ll take about 20 mins in total), transfer to a plate and leave to cool for 5 mins before serving scattered with spring onions.

Heat the barbecue (or heat a griddle pan if cooking indoors). Halve each large chorizo lengthways and put them, cutside down, on the barbecue (small chorizo can go on whole). Cook, turning once or twice, until they are crisp around the edges and cooked through. Slice the chorizo into pieces. Combine the soured cream, mayonnaise and mustard, then add to the cold potatoes with the celery and dill. Gently fold the potatoes into the dressing, taking care not to break up them too much. Scatter the chorizo on top to serve.

BBQ chorizo potato salad • 750g new potatoes, halved if large • 4-6 large cooking chorizo (or 12 small ones) • 150ml soured cream • 3 tbsp mayonnaise • 1 tsp Dijon mustard • 1 celery stalk, finely diced (optional) • 1 tbsp dill, very finely chopped Put the potatoes in a pan of cold salted water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15 mins or until tender and a knife goes in easily. Drain the potatoes and return to the pan, then stand for 5-10 mins to steam-dry. Cut them into bite-sized pieces, season with salt, cover and chill until cold.

www.costablancapeople.com

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Mix the sugar, chilli and 1 tsp cracked pepper in a large roasting tin. Roll the pineapple in the sugar, leave it laying in the excess and dot the top with the pieces of butter. Don’t worry if they fall into the tin – they will all be used when basting. Roast the pineapple for 30 mins, basting every 10 mins with the buttery juices, until sticky and golden. Remove the dish from the oven and leave to cool slightly. While the pineapple is cooling, make the rum cream by whipping the coconut cream to soft peaks, then fold in the rum. Just before serving, baste the pineapple again, then bring to the table whole in the roasting tin, sprinkled with some extra chilli flakes. Carve into wedges or slices, and serve with any extra sauce from the tin and a large dollop of the cream.

Top 12 food myths British people believe Mercadona's 'top' A survey, carried out by the Love Fresh Berries campaign in the UK, has shortlisted the top ‘food myths’ believed by Britons. 1. Oranges are the best natural source of vitamin C Strawberries actually contain more Vitamin C than oranges. Just seven strawberries provide the recommended daily amount of Vitamin C. 2. Cooking fruit and vegetables reduces its nutritional value Not always. Cooking does destroy some heat sensitive vitamins but in some instances, health benefits are unlocked through cooking. 3. Too much of any fruit rots your teeth Fruits with a high acid content can damage the enamel of your teeth if eaten excessively. However, the sugar in most fruits will not rot your teeth. 4. Carrots help you to see in the dark This is a myth but carrots do contain Vitamin A which is important for good vision. 5. Eating celery burns more calories than you gain by eating it In reality there are no negative-calorie foods. Even though celery has low calories, high water density and high fibre, your body still doesn’t use as many calories to process it as there are in a celery stick. 6. Organic fruit is healthiest There is a negligible nutritional difference between organic and nonorganic fruit. 7. Chocolate is an aphrodisiac There is limited evidence that chocolate is an aphrodisiac as there are such small amounts of the substances which have an effect on desire in chocolate.

8. Drinking fruit juice is as nutritious as eating whole fruit Whole fruit contains vital fibres and nutrients that are removed when juicing. 9. Dried fruit and fresh fruit have equal nutrition The heat used in drying fruit can decrease the amount of some heatsensitive nutrients like Vitamin C. However, one piece of dried fruit does contain similar nutrients as fresh fruit, just in a smaller portion. 10. It takes seven years to digest

chewing gum While your stomach doesn’t digest gum the same way as other foods, it still makes its way through your system the same way. 11. Fruit should not be eaten after 2pm Fruit is healthy at any time of day. 12. Fruit should only be eaten on an empty stomach There is no scientific evidence to suggest negative side effects of eating fruit before other food.

moisturiser wins patent suit against bluechip brand THE FIRM which makes one of the toprated moisturising creams in Spain – a €5 supermarket own-brand variety – has won a legal battle with an élite cosmetics company over 'plagiarism'. Mercadona's Sisbela range of day and night face creams, which is exactly the same product as an €85 version retailing under a different name in independent shops, includes a variety called the Diamond Revitalizante ('Diamond Revitalising'). The national patents office refused to allow the cream to be retailed under this name, in case of 'confusion' with the Catalunya-based Natura Bissé's Diamond Extreme. Natura Bissé, a blue-chip cosmetics firm on a par with many international leaders, described its moisturiser on Twitter: “What makes Diamond Extreme an icon? This revolutionary, intelligent formula gives your skin what it needs, when it needs it, even in extreme conditions. A pioneer in the skincare industry for being the first 360º antiageing treatment based on cellular energy.” Sisbela, by contrast, has not had to advertise since it was found to be identical to the vastly more expensive brand Alain – except the scent – when

it caused a similar furore to Lidl's €2.99 Cien Q10 formula, found by a consumer association to be more effective than leading brands retailing at up to €225 a pot. In both cases, as soon as the reports were released, the respective supermarkets ran out of stock within the day and customers began to queue in the street to get their hands on the last remaining jars. Star Healthcare, the manufacturer behind Mercadona's highly-rated, low-priced own-brand cosmetics, appealed against the patents office's decision to stop them using the 'Diamond' name. A judge at the regional High Court of Justice in Madrid has held that there should be no 'confusion' between the Sisbela Diamond and the Natura Bissé Diamond creams. “From a denomination point of view, we consider that between the two brands, there is no high level of similarity,” the court verdict reads. “The structure is different, and there is only one word in common, 'Diamond', which is – as the case has proven – a term frequently used in products in the cosmetics industry.”

Pride of Spain Awards 2019 Now in its thirteenth year, the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain Awards celebrates ordinary people who do extraordinary things, with nominees reflecting the core value of giving for the good of other people, and the community at large here on the Costa Blanca. Once you decide what category your nominee fits into you can nominate someone - a family member, a colleague, a community member or even someone you respect and admire from afar - who you feel deserves recognition for what they do or have achieved. At the heart of the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain Awards is Costa Blanca People boss, Claire Richards, who started the original concept and continues to drive the initiative with her hard work and commitment. Claire told us, “When we launched the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards in 2007, our aim was simple – to unearth and celebrate our unsung heroes - the people who make this community great. It’s hard to believe that it is thirteen years later, and The Pride of Spain Awards have exceeded our wildest expectations. Each

year, we continue to be overwhelmed by the stories of selfless actions, courage, compassion and heroism. This is our chance to celebrate the fact that every day countless expat residents go out of their way to help their neighbours, often receiving little recognition for the extraordinary contributions they make to their communities. All of us know someone who deserves such recognition for their selfless actions. It might be your mum, your sibling, your cousin, your best friend, neighbour or school teacher.

I urge you to take a few minutes and nominate them for a Pride of Spain Award in 2019. On behalf of everyone at the Costa Blanca People, I would like to thank our readers, sponsors, political and community leaders who lend their ongoing support to the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards.” To nominate your local hero, simply go to http://www.costablancapeople.c om/pride-of-spain-awards/ and fill in the online form. If you don’t have internet access, simply call or visit our office (address on page 57) and we will do the rest for you.

WHO brands Ebola outbreak ‘global crisis’ The World Health Organization has declared the current Ebola crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo a “public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC)”. However, officials stopped short of recommending that borders should be closed, saying the risk of the disease spreading outside the region was not currently high. The outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed more than 1,600 people with concern mounting after the first case reached a highly populated city, Goma. The PHEIC emergency provision is the highest level of alarm the WHO can sound and has only been used four times previously including the devastating Ebola epidemic that ravaged parts of West Africa from 2014 to 2016, killing more than 11,000 people. The WHO held a news conference in Geneva on Wednesday in order to declare the emergency. The organisation’s Chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said “It is time for the world to take notice.” The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies welcomed the move, saying in a statement: “While it does not change the reality on the

Algorfa Chiropractic Clinic Algorfa Chiropractic Clinic was established in 2014 and treats patients for a number of issues. Dr Anne treats back, neck pain, postural correction and specialises in treating pregnant women and children. Dr. Anne Lécuyer graduated in the IFEC Paris, France. She uses traditional chiropractic techniques, acupuncture, drop technique and the activator method in her treatments. How does Chiropractic work? Your body is constantly changing every moment you are alive! Nothing in the body works unless it is connected to your brain. Therefore, if your spine is misaligned and putting pressure on the nerves, this reduces the life energy flow to your body; resulting in problems associated with organs, muscles, ligaments... Spinal adjustments increase the life energy which helps restore the body back to optimal health. Specific chiropractic adjustments restore the connection between brain and body. This restores the flow of life energy. Every chiropractic adjustment is a part of the healing process. Every adjustment builds on the next one. Healing is any movement towards increasing your body’s expression of life energy. From the very first visit Dr Anne and the team want all patients to experience a relaxed, friendly, caring and professional approach to their individual health care. Algorfa Chiropractic Clinic takes a phased approach to chiropractic treatment; Phase 1: Relief care The first objective is to relieve the pain, and improve your sense of wellbeing. Phase 2: Corrective care During the corrective care stage, chiropractic adjustments allow the muscles and other tissues to heal to their optimal level, thereby helping prevent injury in the future. Phase 3: Wellness care Once your body has healed, it is important to

come in for preventative care, which is a maintenance programme. This involves periodic visits to ensure that the whole of your spine remains healthy. Maintenance is key to healthy living. When you make routine chiropractic care a part of your lifestyle, you avoid many of the aches and pains that so many people suffer through, your joints will last longer and you will be able to engage in more of the activities you love. A Healthier Spine is a Healthier You. Dr Anne evaluates the entire spine. Even if you only have lower back pain, she will examine your neck, too, for example to see how well your spine is functioning overall, and remember: What happens in one area of your spine can influence other parts of your spine and/or body. Excellence in hands-on care for musculoskeletal pain at any age. Come and experience the difference at the Algorfa Chiropractic Clinic. “Our greatest Wealth is Health” Chiropractors are health professionals who consider the human body to have the natural power of self recovery. Chiropractors have approximately 5,500 hours of university training and know what they can or can’t treat thanks to what is called differential diagnosis. Chiropractic treatment can help · Back pain · Neck pain · Sciatica · Herniated discs · Lumbago · · Migraines and vertigo

ground for victims or partners engaged in the response, we hope it will bring the international attention that this crisis deserves.” This latest outbreak, the second largest in history, started in August 2018 and is affecting two provinces in DR Congo - North Kivu and Ituri. More than 2,500 people have been infected and two-thirds of them have died. It took 224 days for the number of cases to reach 1,000, but just a further 71 days to reach 2,000. About 12 new cases are being reported every day. There is a vaccine, developed during the West Africa Ebola epidemic which is 99% effective against Ebola. It has been administered to over 161,000 people but conflict in the region means that controlling the spread of the disease if very challenging.

Since January, there have been 198 attacks against healthcare workers or Ebola treatment facilities. Another major inhibitor is local distrust of healthcare workers leading to about a third of deaths taking place out in the community rather than at a specialist Ebola treatment centre. This means that many people are not seeking treatment and instead risk spreading the disease. Trish Newport, from the charity MSF told the press, "We are one year into the outbreak and the situation is not getting any better. It's a complex environment with a long history of violence, of conflict, so there's a lot of mistrust of foreigners from outside the area. We have to build ties and connections with the community so they trust us."

Menstrual cups as effective as traditional alternatives A new study has found that menstrual cups are as effective as tampons and pads. Menstrual cups are becoming increasingly popular due to a combination of environmental and economic reasons. The first major review of research into the use of menstrual cups was published this week. The review found that cups work as well as conventional sanitary pads or tampons. Researchers looked at 43 studies worldwide (covering 3,319 women, from high-, middle- and lowincome countries) to assess their effectiveness, safety and acceptability to girls and women. They found women needed time and support to adjust to using menstrual cups, but that they were practical even in areas where sanitation and privacy were difficult, such as refugee camps. Across 15 studies, around 73% of women or girls said they wanted to continue using them after the study was over. Researchers also estimated that using a menstrual cup consistently for 10 years would cost 5% of the amount spent on pads (assuming 12 pads per month) and would use only 0.4% of the plastic waste produced by pads. Similarly the use of a menstrual cup over the same time period would cost 7% of the amount spent on tampons and would use only 7% of the plastic waste produced by tampons.

Calls for FaceApp investigation A facial ageing app FaceApp went viral last week with many social media users posting CGI aged selfies. However, a US Senator has called for an investigation into the app calling it "deeply troubling" that personal data of US citizens could go to a "hostile foreign power". Privacy concerns were raised about the Russian company which developed the app after it went viral in recent days. FaceApp has previously denied the allegations. Wireless Lab, a company based in St. Petersburg, says it does not permanently store images, and does not collect data - only uploading specific photos selected by users for editing.

Gary from Almoradi asks: Hi Aunty. I'm using Internet Explorer on Windows 10 and I'm having difficulty deleting my 'Favourites'. I used to be able to do this very easily by 'right clicking' on the favourite, then 'delete' or otherwise by going into 'Favourites' 'Organise favourites' highlight the favourite then hit 'Delete'. Both these things still initially delete the website but usually within minutes or sometimes by the next day, it reappears again at the bottom of the favourites list. I've spent ages deleting dozens of favourites but each time hey presto, they are back and I'm baffled. As this was a function that previously worked, I was wondering if it is likely to be a result of an automated Windows 10 update? Aunty Says: Hi Gary. I think that Internet Explorer is synchronising the favourites stored on your computer with another device, such as your phone or tablet. You can switch syncing off by clicking on the start icon and select “setting” “accounts” and click on “Sync your settings” and turn off Internet explorer settings. You now should be able to delete your unwanted favourites. Beryl from Quesada asks: We have treated ourselves to a brand new Windows 10 laptop but our old Windows 7 one had a proper paid copy Microsoft Office which we used to write letters and my husband writes short stories and poems. The shop I called said I must now pay an extra €130 to have it reinstalled and they can’t copy it from my old laptop as they say they have binned it (luckily we did keep a USB backup of our documents) so I don’t know what to do. Aunty Says:

Hello Beryl. Unless you have any of the original Office installation stuff (possibly emails with the activation code) you´re looking at around €80 for the latest version. €80 is a lot more than the marvellous Wordpad app that comes bundled with Windows so maybe give that a go. Click on the start icon (or press the Windows logo key) and type worpad and the app should show up in the list. Also unless your old Windows 7 laptop had been through the washing machine I’d be very surprised if it had all been “binned” so maybe check again with the shop just in case your old hard disk drive is sitting on a shelf somewhere. Gwen via email asks: Hello Aunty. I work for a local charity and I print a lot of emails every day but nearly all of what I print is just simple text so could happily be black and white but most of the time a load of colour adverts are included and we seem to be

using as much expensive colour ink as we are black. Is there a way to remove or disable the colour cartridge? We tried this but we get an error message “insert cartridge” and I can only print the document after I have put the colour one back in. Aunty Says: Hi Gwen. No you won’t be able to remove the colour cartridge without an error messages from the printer but you can set up your printer to print only in black and white or draft/economy mode. The easiest way to do this is by holding down the ‘Ctrl’ key and pressing ‘P’ just before you are ready to print. Click the ‘properties’ button and this should display various printing options. All printers and programs are a little different, but the principles are the same. Any questions then do email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com. See you all next week.

Dealing with Emergencies It is inevitable that incidents occur on the roads, but despite that inevitability, they usually come as a surprise. With surprise comes risk as we are sometimes too shocked to deal with the unfolding situation logically. There is an obligation to assist in the event of an incident on the roads, but the most important thing to remember if an incident occurs is to stay calm and not make the situation any worse than it already is by protecting ourselves. That is where the “P.A.S. system” is useful to learn and remember, as it is intended to give a level of protection to those who come across or are assisting in an incident, based on the first response to a situation, in which the primary concern should always be protection, then advising others, and then assisting those in need. In Spanish, PAS is derived from Proteger Avisar Socorrer, which, for simplicity, we could translate to Protect, Advise, Save (or aSsist). Let us look at the three elements. You can see how these come together on the pictogram, remembering that

the first and most important stage is safety. Protect What to Do: Knowing what to do if you witness a traffic accident can not only save the lives of the injured, but also your own. Never forget the three steps: Protect, Advise and Save. Self-protection. Park your own vehicle in a safe spot and wear your reflective vest before leaving it. Keep away from a burning vehicle or if you notice that it is transporting dangerous goods. Protect the accident site. Signal the area as soon as possible by placing warning triangles and switching on your hazard warning lights. Advise Call the emergency services on 112 (they speak multiple languages, including English). Information to provide: Location of the place of accident (street, number, kilometre point, if it is a two-way street, the address, and report any other detail that can assist in identifying your location quickly: chapel, restaurant ... The number of injured people

and all the information you can provide (if unconscious, bleeding etc). Special circumstances (the existence of trapped persons, danger of falling vehicle, if they are transporting dangerous goods, if fallen into water etc). Characteristics and number of vehicles. Wait from the controllers to confirm the details before hanging up. Assist Be extremely careful in order to not add or aggravate injuries. You should not do: As a general rule, do not move the injured, nor remove them from the vehicle. If they are a biker, do not remove the helmet. Do not give drink, food or medication. Do not allow them to move on their own. Do not leave until emergency services say it is okay. You should do: Stay close to the injured, if possible, at their side. Try to keep them calm. If necessary, and always if you know how to, perform first aid.

The Integrated Patrol We may be used to seeing the Guardia Civil patrolling the roads on their motorbikes, but these vehicles are more than just a quick-response mode of transport through the busy summer road network, many of them are equipped with everything needed to keep the roads safer at any time, day or night. The “Integrated Patrol” was a pioneering model of road traffic policing across Europe, whereas the motorbikes are equipped with the latest equipment such as breathalysers, drug testing kits, speed monitoring devices, and the means to issue fines on the spot. It is worth noting that when it comes to alcohol, the maximum permitted limit is much lower than many other countries, including the UK, although the safest limit is always zero. Also worth noting is that the breathalysers used at the roadside can be used as

evidence. Currently, in the UK, the roadside tests are only an indication of the amount of alcohol consumed and the formal, evidential test is carried out back at the police station, sometimes a number of hours after the initial check. That process is likely to change in the UK soon as well, incidentally, as the Department of Transport is investing in new breathalysers which can be used in evidence from the scene, in the same way as the ones in Spain are. When it comes to drugs, a simple testing kit is also carried. These require two swabs to be taken which are then recorded and stored in the event of a discrepancy afterwards. Fail either the alcohol or drugs tests and your vehicle will be immobilised and you will be dealt with appropriately, either by means of a fine and points in the event of the limits being exceeded on a lower scale, and criminal proceedings for the

worst offenders, or indeed those who habitually drink or consume drugs and drive. Refusal to comply with the request for either test immediately constitutes a criminal offence. The motorbikes are also equipped with mobile speed detecting equipment. However, this equipment is not fitted to the motorbikes, which is the case in some countries, such as New Zealand for example, but is portable equipment which can be set up by the roadside to monitor speeds of passing vehicles, in both directions, and across numerous lanes of traffic. Thanks to these “Integrated Patrol”, surveillance and monitoring can be set up in the minimum of time, and on roads where other vehicles may not previously have been able to operate. The result is the opportunity to improve road safety on more roads throughout the country, albeit through enforcement.

Japan figures out zero mileage mystery Car rental firms in Japan were baffled that many cars were being returned with incredibly low mileage clocked up. In order to figure out why drivers weren’t ‘driving’ their rental cars, companies undertook a survey to solve the mystery. The study found that rather than using the rental cars to get from A to B, many ‘motorists’ were using their cars for other purposes – to have a sleep, to use as an ‘office’ or even to work on their language skills. Times24, which has more than 1.2 million registered users, found some clients napped, worked or even used their rented vehicles as storage space for personal belongings when nearby regular lockers were full. One respondent, a company worker in his early 30s, was quoted as saying: “I rented a car to eat a boxed meal that I bought at a convenience store because I couldn’t find anywhere else to have lunch.” The newspaper reporting the phenomenon, the Asahi Shimbun, cited the ease with which cars could be reserved online and the low cost to do so.

For example, Times24 cars cost as little as 400 yen (£2.95) for half an hour and were available for collection from more than 12,000 locations across Japan. Another survey, carried out in 2018, found that one in eight did not rent cars to drive, with most of the non-motoring respondents saying they used them to sleep in or to talk on the phone to family, friends and business clients. Some preferred to take advantage of the peace and quiet to watch TV or practise their singing or spoken English. Anecdotal evidence suggests some users are taking advantage of the Japanese car rental industry’s low cost

and convenience (users can unlock vehicles with a prepaid card) to have a ‘siesta’ between meetings, or simply to have some time alone in a busy city. It comes as no surprise that Japanese workers need a nap. A recent survey carried out across 28 countries using wearable fitness trackers found that Japanese men and women slept on average for just six hours and 35 minutes a night – 45 minutes less than the international average. That made them the most sleep-deprived of all the nations surveyed, a phenomenon blamed partly on punishing working hours and long commutes.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

DEAR

READER,

some people

shop at Waitrose and some people shop at Poundland. That is a fact of life. And it doesn’t always relate to how much money you have, does it Mike Ashley? There’s absolutely no doubt that Newcastle United’s ever-so-popular owner is a closet Poundland shopper – especially when you consider who he has just brought in as Rafa’s replacement for next season. But before we take aim at Steve Bruce (which is more difficult these days considering how much weight he has lost), we need to applaud Poundland’s social media activity last week. As the world suddenly lost its mind

over what they believed to be a terrible new Huddersfield Town kit sponsored by Paddy Power, Poundland were busy mocking up their own version which would be more akin to Newcastle given that Ashley isn’t a fan of spending more than he has to. Which is why he’s opted for someone like Steve Bruce ahead of someone who might actually keep Newcastle in the Premier League next season. And it’s also why the club are being linked to free agent Andy Carroll rather than shelling out £30m+ on Hoffenheim’s striker Joelinton. Could there be a less inspiring appointment than Steve Bruce, presuming that Joe Kinnear is still alive but unavailable? I mean, credit to Bruce. He did such an amazing job in the 20 minutes he was in charge at Sheffield Wednesday that it is little wonder that his hometown club have come knocking. It must be to do with Bruce’s 30% win percentage in the Premier League as opposed to the fact that he is very cheap – I mean, even by my basic maths winning 30% of Newcastle’s 38 Premier League matches next season gives them 33 points and then they’ve only got to sneak a couple of draws and they will stay up. It’s a genius move, even if the Newcastle fans tend to disagree. Who’s that Egyptian right-back who

follows Bruce everywhere? He must be available on a free. He’ll slot in lovely. And if he can just master knocking it long on to Big Andy’s head at every opportunity things will come together very nicely for the Toon. Horrible kits have been a hot topic in the last seven days – after all, did you see that shocking third strip that Manchester City unveiled in China against Wolves? Before you call me out, I did not break my annual tradition of refusing to acknowledge the existence of these ridiculous tournaments abroad. The glow of City’s kit was so bright I feared there might have been a nuclear explosion in the middle of Saturday afternoon. The only thing worse than City’s kit on the day was their penalty taking – meaning that Wolves fans can start talking about how they’ve won some silverware for the first time since about 1980. Popping back to Paddy Power and that Huddersfield kit, briefly – I am not sure who are the bigger idiots in the football fan world right now. There were more than enough who believed that the original kit was for real and those people really should receive banning orders from all grounds for the rest of their lives. But then on the flip side, there’s the lot who are applauding Paddy Power for being such wonderful people for ‘giving football back to the fans’ in removing a sponsor from one football kit. You do realise that this is just one big PR stunt to get Paddy

This month’s competition was fished in temperatures of 35 degrees, fortunately a slight mild breeze was with us all day which made fishing bearable.....just. Again we had restricted numbers due to date clashes, however steps have been taken to avoid it happening in the future. So with the tidying up of the banks and walkways we shall be increasing the maximum number to 14 if required. The results for July is as follows, 1. 2. 3. 4.

Tony Willy Russell Peter

peg 5 peg 1 peg 8 peg 3

22.68kgs 21.40kgs 9.58kgs 6.78kgs

Starting in August the competitions will now be held on the second Saturday of the month which hopefully will provide us with a full compliment every month. The August competition will be on Saturday 10th, drawing for pegs will be 10.00 fishing 11.00 to 1.30 half hour for lunch then fishing 2.00 till 5.00. these times are for August only and back to 9.00 draw for pegs from September. Entry is 10€ with includes a snack lunch. Tight Lines Jackie Breslin

Power more exposure so that when people decide to whack down some of their hard-earned on crazy accas that are never going to land that they do it with them, no? They are not on a onebookie crusade to rid the world of all the wrongs given to us by modern football, mainly because they are one of the market leaders representing on of the biggest things wrong with modern football.

the coaches vs players weekly 6aside in training. I’m backing the coaches to nick it as they can still remember what it is like to win trophies.

Mind you, the industry has kept Ray Winstone relevant I suppose.

Ozil has appeared with a bleachblonde barnet that makes Robbie Fowler’s mid-90s effort look practically auburn. Apparently, Ozil lost a bet with Alexandre Lacazette and the forfeit was to hit the bottle. Which is what a lot of Arsenal fans will no doubt be doing when their side fail to finish in the top six next season.

It didn’t take us too long to get on to stupid football fans, so look away now if you are one of the Chelsea ‘fans’ who already on the #LampardOut bandwagon. So Chelsea drew with a team in Ireland and lost to a team in Japan. This doesn’t mean that a club legend should be booted out before a Premier League ball has been kicked in anger. God no. Give him until the middle of September at the very least. As for the Manchester United fans that flew all the way to Australia just to be able to boo Ashley Young every time he touched the ball, that’s the kind of pettiness I can get behind every day of the week. If United want to keep a connection to the ‘successful past’ then they can still get rid of Young and Phil Jones and keep recruiting former players to the backroom staff. Frankly, give them each a pair of boots and they’d probably do an equally bad job. With Solskjaer’s current staff recruitment campaign, I’d love to watch

RUGBY SAN JUAN XXII 7’S BEACH RUGBY TOURNAMENT This coming weekend the San Juan annual beach rugby tournament will be taking place on Saturday 27 July with teams taking part form all over the area, from Albacete to Denia. This is the 22nd tournament that they have done and has gradually got bigger every year. So come on down for a great day of rugby on the beach and enjoying the sun at the same time, the perfect rugby day.

I’d love to be at Mesut Ozil’s breakfast table, randomly. I’d just love to know what he is thinking – there has to be a thought process along the lines of ‘what can alienate me further from the fans of the club that fund my laziness?’

Over in wherever Liverpool are for preseason (it might be the USA, it might be China, it might be Australia for all I care), Jurgen Klopp ended a press conference giving a King Klopp bearhug to a man who could well have been Jurgen Klopp himself. I think the Germans call it a doppelganger, though Jurgen managed to slip a very common English word in front when greeting his mirror image. Out in Africa, Sadio Mane and Riyad Mahrez have finally finished their 2018/19 season after the AFCON Cup Final which Algeria won. They now only have a shocking three weeks before the Premier League season commences. I know, right? Three weeks off a year? Shocking.

Las Ramblas Golf Society With many of our members ‘in hibernation’ for the summer months back in their respective countries (or are they competing at Royal Portrush?) just three teams contested Monday’s ‘Yellow Peril’. Had our ‘El Presidente’, Dave Pulling, not put the yellow ball in the lake on the 9th I’m sure my team could have taken the glory (only joking Dave). Our winners, with 141 points, were Geoff Biggerstaff, Pete Dunn, Terry Field and Nigel Price. Well done! Wednesday and it was a Stableford with every player off the ladies red tees. All the men were cut either 2 or 3 shots to even things out. As things panned out it certainly turned out to bethe Mike Mahoney show! He managed to score a ‘2’ today, but as he doesn’t enter this little side competition, won nothing! He did though manage the best score on the day with 41 points! His winnings, however, will not cover the cost of the two clubs he left out on the course, (probably on the second hole)! Dave Pulling obviously learnt from his mistakes earlier in the week and claimed 2nd spot with 39 points. Three players, Richard Connock, Graham Murray and Tom Hardie shared the final places, with each of them on 36 points. Four more ‘2’s today with Phil Herrington getting two of them with the others coming from Mike Frankish and Dave Pulling. Peter Reffell

MATCH FISHING REPORT The 9th and penultimate round of the Summer Series was fished at the El Bosquet Complex Section B on the 16th July. It was another very hot day, but is only to be expected for the time of year, and it was a fair turn out The movement of the fish has coloured the water up, and there is an abundance of fry in the margins. RODS & REELS It was the 14th and last round of the Spring Championship, which was fished on the Embalsa de Pedrera on the 17th July. The water has gone down at least a metre, making the perimeter of the lake very muddy, wellingtons or paddling pumps were a necessity, as the keep nets must be pegged out so they do not collapse, also there was a very strong wind blowing. Marlene Hutchinson had a wonderful day taking the top spot with 20.180kgs, second place was Terry Brindley with14.600kgs and coming in third was Bill Reade with 10.900kgs

Rojales Netball Club Rojales Netball Club travelled to La Manga Club Resort for the annual netball tournament last weekend. Once again there were over 40 teams taking part, mainly from the UK. It was an early Saturday morning start and Rojales were grouped with five other teams. They sailed through the group with only one loss and straight into the knockout stages. It was the quarter finals, the day was getting hotter and Rojales were on fire after their GS, Wendy, scored the Golden Goal to send them into the semi finals. In the past the semis had proved to be Rojales' final hurdle but not this time. Again after another close

scoring game into the Final they went!

they didn't have enough to hold on and they ended up losing 7-4.

With not much rest the same seven players (Claire, Sam, Ange, Katie, Charley, Teach and Wendy) took to the court. The final was against a very experienced Manchester based team.

The girls were really disappointed but were reminded how far they had come; what an achievement it was to reach the final (especially against UK teams who play week in/week out, and their own last competitive match was last November) and that they should be very proud of themselves.

Rojales had the perfect start breaking down the opposition's play time after time and through some great passing they got the ball into their circle and put away the shots. The first half ending 4-1 in their favour. The opposition made three tactical changes at half time. Bringing on these fresh legs made all the difference and even though Rojales played out of their skins

The day ended with a dinner and presentation followed by partying until the early hours! Rojales Netball Club are now coming to the end of their season and would like to thank Pedro and Rojales Town Hall for their continued support.
