Could the Costa del Sol be the new Spanish Hollywood?
It is true that this part of Spain has been increasingly used as a backdrop for films. With its stunning scenery, excellent weather and wealth of cinematic locations, it is easy to see why this area of the country could indeed become a new European centre for movie-making.
Netflix is taking full advantage of the Costa del Sol’s beauty and production capabilities, shooting three of its series in the region. Local Fresco Film production company, run by Peter Welter and Silvia Aráez, has gained much respect from the likes of Hollywood for its two Location Managers Guild International Awards (the Oscars of the profession) for its work on Game of Thrones.

This summer it is behind Netflix’s big productions Red Book, Kaos and Scandinavian series, Exit.
Scenes for Red Book are currently being filmed in San Pedro de Alcántara, with future filming planned in Estepona, Marbella and other nearby locales over several weeks’.
Last July episodes for Kaos - a modern view of Greek and Roman mythology - were shot, while Exit season 3 wrapped up final scenes in Fuengirola based on witness accounts from four millionaire investors and a look into the use of drugs, prostitution and excessive violence as a way to escape life’s stresses
