The 2012 season includes one comedy, two dramas, and three musicals (which are performed with live orchestra): D on’ t D rink the W ater (Feb. 3-19), Gypsy (April 13 – May 6), The Glass Menagerie ( June 15 – July 1), The Spitfire Grill (Aug. 10-26), Twelve

ormerly known as Centro D el Sol Theater, the Arcade Theater will continue to offer original, local theater, fashion shows featuring local designers, as well as movies, music, dances and more! The change to Arcade Theater is not j ust a return to Cottage Grove’ s historic Arcade Theater name— it’ s also part of an expansion to a larger downtown community art center and a revamped theater space. The Arcade Theater’ s mission is still to provide a venue for all forms of artistic expression in the Grove, including finding a role for anyone and everyone who wants to be involved in community theater. Productions have included puppet shows, parades, musicals, skit festivals and many other locally grown masterpieces.

CT (continued) Angry Men (October 5-21), and Roald D ahl’ s W illy W onka (Nov. 30 – D ec. 23). Part of the mission of the theatre is to provide a creative outlet for community members. CT actors, directors, designers and crew members are all volunteers with a passion for theatre. New volunteers are warmly welcomed, and no previous experience is necessary. As an intergenerational community theatre, Cottage Theatre has a special fondness for getting children involved in theatre. The theatre’ s main season shows often involve children and teens working side-by-side with adult actors. And each summer the theatre offers two summer camps especially for young actors ages 5 to 14. This year’ s SK I T Camp (ages 5– 8) is June 25-29, and Melodrama Camp (ages 9– 14) is July 9-20. The latter camp culminates in three public performances of an original melodrama on July 20, 21, and 22.

or decades South Lane County has been known for its beautiful scenery and recreational opportunities. The rivers and lakes have long attracted visitors. But in recent years, South Lane County has added a new attraction: wineries. The Willamette Valley, with its rich topsoil and mild weather, is a great place for vineyards. In recent years several growers have planted hundreds of acres to grapes — pinots are a favorite — and their efforts have paid off. Many wineries have added tasting rooms that allow visitors to sample their products, and one can easily visit several in a day. he K alapuya I ndians called the southern W illamette V alley and northern D ouglas County home, though their numbers q uickly diminished as some left the area to avoid the white setters who began arriving here in 1848. D isease and a move to reservations reduced local K alapuya populations, and Sam Fern, the last fullblooded K alapuya, passed away Sept. 4, 1919. Many early settlers traveled to Cottage Grove on the Applegate Trail, which left the Oregon Trail in I daho, crossed Nevada and came into southern Oregon over the Cascade Mountains. Other settlers followed the northern route down the Columbia River to Oregon

City and then traveled south through the W illamette V alley to L ane County. The D onation L and Claim Act brought more Americans to seek a life in Oregon. James Chapin came to the W illamette V alley from the west, crossing the Coast Range after his ship fl oundered off the Oregon Coast. H e settled south of Cottage Grove and his house-built in 1865-stands derelict today on D ugan L ane. A cottage owned by Greenbery C. Pearce was home to the first post office in 1855. I t was located in an oak grove near Creswell — hence the name Cottage Grove. After the railroad arrived in 1872, a feud broke out between west siders and

those east of the river in the town of L emati over which side of the river the post office would occupy. Over time, homes and businesses fi lled in between the two settlements and they became known as Cottage Grove. Travel by horseback and wagons gave way to the railroad until the Pacific H ighway was constructed at the site of present-day River Road. L ater, H ighway 99 became the main north-south route on the Pacific Coast. I n 1957, I nterstate 5 opened on the east side of the city. Agriculture and timber have been among the town’ s maj or industries from its earliest days, and after W orld W ar I I , mills in the area expanded as a building boom drove the nation’ s economy.

Mining was also a means for early residents to fi ll their purses. As early as 1863 gold was discovered in the Bohemia Mountains (so named for one of its early miners, James “ Bohemia” Johnson). Bohemia City was founded in 1866 and mining began in earnest in the 1890s, bringing an infl ux of businesses into Cottage Grove. Flooding was a common problem in Cottage Grove until the 1940s, when the U .S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed Cottage Grove Reservoir on the Coast Fork and D orena Reservoir on Row River.

oday, a snapshot of the area’ s history is displayed at the Cottage Grove Museum, located at H Street and Birch Avenue in an octagonal building that once was home to the Catholic Church. The Cottage Grove H istorical L ibrary, located at 737 Main St., also contains much information pertaining to businesses, buildings, churches and schools that pertains to the development of the area. Residents and business people have worked to preserve the fl avor of the community by preserving many historic buildings and adding murals, creating a bridge between yesterday and today.
