ENDLESS ADVENTURE A haven for lovers of the great outdoors

V

isitors to the historic town of Cottage Grove will find it and the surrounding area to be literally a gold mine of activity and exploration for all ages. There are nuggets to be found in both the town and country for those willing to search them out.

Dorena Lake is six miles east of Cottage Grove by way of Row River Road. This large lake covers 1,900 acres when full and features camping, a large boat ramp and picnic area at nearby Baker Bay Park. Schwarz Park is nearby and also offers camping.

The entire family will want to explore our historic downtown with its beautiful city parks, colorful murals, museums and small businesses.

Umpqua National Forest boasts a wide selection of hiking trails, campgrounds, picnicking spots, waterfalls and places to commune with nature. The forest covers 984,602 acres of mountain woodlands and is about 15 miles east of town, beyond Dorena Lake.

Recreation opportunities abound for those who are inclined to get out and explore the countryside, including a covered bridge tour and the Bohemia mining district. There are two U.S. Army Corps of Engineer reservoirs located outside of town that draw locals and visitors from around the state to their shores. Serene Cottage Grove Lake is a short five-mile drive south of town going out Sixth Street to London and Reservoir roads. The lake is three miles long and covers 1,158 acres when it’s full. Tent and RV camping are available at Pine Meadows Campground, in addition to a nearby primitive campground. Swimming, fishing and picnicking are also available at Shortridge and Wilson Creek Parks.

The Row River Trail is a popular Rails-to-Trails project that begins in Cottage Grove and winds 17 miles along the Row River, passing Dorena Lake along the way. It is a safe, scenic path that is paved for walking, biking or horseback riding. The gentle hills are possible for most stages of fitness, and the gorgeous scenery makes the effort worthwhile. Culture comes in many forms and includes performances at the Cottage Theatre’s beautiful state-of-the-art, $1 million facility that attracts and features local actors in a variety of plays. Other annual events include the rodeo and Bohemia Mining Days celebration in July, the WOE Heritage Fair in August, Gathering of Gardeners in September and the December lighting of the Main Street Christmas tree.

CULTURE AND CLASS A taste of the finer things

C

ottage Grove offers a first-class theater experience, with local thespians gracing the stages at both the Cottage Theatre and Arcade Theater. The city offers a starting point for a jaunt into picturesque Oregon wine country.

Cottage Theatre

The Cottage Theatre featured the music and magic of Stephen Sondheim with its April, 2012 production of ‘Gypsy.’

Cottage Theatre has a reputation as one of Lane County’s finest community theatres. Now celebrating its 31th anniversary, the theatre has grown tremendously since its humble beginnings in 1982 under a parachute on the lawn of the Village Green Resort. Currently Cottage Theatre performs to audiences of more than 11,500 people each year in its 151-seat facility, which was built with community support in 1998 and expanded in 2006. Cottage Theatre currently produces a year-round main

8

season of six productions annually. The 2013 season includes one mystery thriller, two dramas, and three musicals (which are performed with live orchestra): Secret Garden (April 12-May 5), Much Ado About Nothing ( June 14-30), Pump Boys and Dinettes (August 9-25), Monte Python’s Spamalot (Oct. 4-27) and a A Christmas Story (Dec. 6-22). Part of the mission of the theatre is to provide a creative outlet for community members. CT actors, directors, designers and crew members are all volunteers with a passion for theatre.

Cottage Grove Community Guidebook 2013

New volunteers are warmly welcomed, and no previous experience is necessary. As an intergenerational community theatre, Cottage Theatre has a special fondness for getting children involved in theatre. The theatre’s main season shows often involve children and teens working side-by-side with adult actors. And each summer the theatre offers two summer camps especially for young actors ages 5 to 14. This year’s SKIT Camp (ages 5–8) is June 24-28, and Melodrama Camp (ages 9–14) is July 8-21. The latter

camp culminates in three public performances of an original melodrama on July 19, 20, and 21. Cottage Theatre is located at 700 Village Drive in Cottage Grove, just across the street from the hospital. For more information about becoming involved, or for a current show schedule, visitwww. cottagetheatre.org or call the theatre box office at (541)942-8001.

Arcade Theater

F

ormerly known as Centro Del Sol, the Arcade Theater will continue to offer original, local theater, fashion shows featuring local designers, as well as movies, music, dances and more! The change to Arcade Theater is not just a return to Cottage Grove’s historic Arcade Theater name—it’s also part of an expansion to a larger downtown community art center and a revamped theater space.

The Arcade Theater’s mission is still to provide a venue for all forms of artistic expression in the Grove, including finding a role for anyone and everyone who wants to be involved in community theater. Productions have included puppet shows, parades, musicals, skit festivals and many other locally grown masterpieces. For information about shows or how you can be involved, please email arcadetheater@gmail.com. The Arcade Theater embraced Halloween with its production of ‘The Texas Lion King Massacre,’ a madcap mashup of two unforgettable films.

Wineries:

among the state’s finest

F

or decades South Lane County has been known for its beautiful scenery and recreational opportunities. The rivers and lakes have long attracted visitors. But in recent years, South Lane County has added a new attraction: wineries. The Willamette Valley, with its rich topsoil and mild weather, is a great place for vineyards. In recent years several growers have planted hundreds of acres to grapes — pinots are a favorite — and their efforts have paid off. Many wineries have added tasting rooms that allow visitors to sample their products, and one can easily visit several in a day. A suggested route is to start with Saginaw Vineyard, approximately two miles north of Cottage Grove. It is located on Delight Valley School Road, off Saginaw East Road, and can be accessed either from Interstate 5 (Exit 176) or Highway 99. From there one can return to Cottage Grove and drive through town on Main Street to Lorane Road, then continue westward to Territo-

rial Highway. Chateau Lorane, King Estate and Silvan Ridge-Hinman Vineyards can be accessed from Territorial. Sweet Cheeks Winery is another welcome stop on the route.

A word of caution: Having a designated driver is suggested. Many of these wineries are accessed by narrow, winding roads, and driving under the influence (.08 in Oregon) is illegal.

HISTORY AND ITS STEWARDS Bridging the past and future Cottage Grove history

T

he Kalapuya Indians called the southern Willamette Valley and northern Douglas County home, though their numbers quickly diminished as some left the area to avoid the white setters who began arriving here in 1848. Disease and a move to reservations reduced local Kalapuya populations, and Sam Fern, the last fullblooded Kalapuya, passed away Sept. 4, 1919. Many early settlers traveled to Cottage Grove on the Applegate Trail, which left the Oregon Trail in Idaho, crossed Nevada and came into southern Oregon over the Cascade Mountains. Other settlers followed the northern route down the Columbia River to Oregon

City and then traveled south through the Willamette Valley to Lane County. The Donation Land Claim Act brought more Americans to seek a life in Oregon. James Chapin came to the Willamette Valley from the west, crossing the Coast Range after his ship floundered off the Oregon Coast. He settled south of Cottage Grove and his house-built in 1865-stands derelict today on Dugan Lane. A cottage owned by Greenbery C. Pearce was home to the first post office in 1855. It was located in an oak grove near Creswell — hence the name Cottage Grove. After the railroad arrived in 1872, a feud broke out between west siders and

those east of the river in the town of Lemati over which side of the river the post office would occupy. Over time, homes and businesses filled in between the two settlements and they became known as Cottage Grove. Travel by horseback and wagons gave way to the railroad until the Pacific Highway was constructed at the site of present-day River Road. Later, Highway 99 became the main north-south route on the Pacific Coast. In 1957, Interstate 5 opened on the east side of the city. Agriculture and timber have been among the town’s major industries from its earliest days, and after World War II, mills in the area expanded as a building boom drove the nation’s economy.

Mining was also a means for early residents to fill their purses. As early as 1863 gold was discovered in the Bohemia Mountains (so named for one of its early miners, James “Bohemia” Johnson). Bohemia City was founded in 1866 and mining began in earnest in the 1890s, bringing an influx of businesses into Cottage Grove. Flooding was a common problem in Cottage Grove until the 1940s, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed Cottage Grove Reservoir on the Coast Fork and Dorena Reservoir on Row River.
