allop in to the past for the 58th annual Bohemia Mining Days Festival! Animals like horses, oxen and mules played crucial roles during the mining days. From transporting meat and food for miners to carrying precious gold and equipment to and from the mines, these animals are the hidden heroes. This year’s festival theme is: “Galloping into the Past.” In addition to celebrating the rich history of Cottage Grove through the appreciation of animals, events range from a 5k run to a treasure hunt! To get a little taste of the roles and responsibilities of these mining heroes, take a trip back to a time to the late 50s: when mining was flourishing and towns were growing. Meet the friendly, courageous horse: George…

Bohemia Mining Days
About the Bohemia Nugget The Bohemia Nugget was originally a Friday weekly published in Cottage Grove from 1889 to 1907, when it was consolidated with the Cottage Grove Leader. After years of competing, The Leader was finally bought out by its nemesis, the Cottage Grove Sentinel, in 1918. We celebrate our colorful heritage by publishing this
annual commemorative section that highlights Cottage Grove’s history and serves as an information guide for the Bohemia Mining Days Festival. Stories and photos reflect the life and times of a bygone era as well as current events surrounding Bohemia Mining Days.

he Cottage Grove City Council, city staff, and local citizens of our great city welcome you to the Bohemia Mining Days celebration! This year is the 58th anniversary of the four-day festival that is fun for the whole family! The 2017 theme “Galloping into the Past” highlights the role horses and oxen played in the development of Cottage Grove and the Bohemia Mining District. I invite you to head up to the 53rd Annual Miners' Breakfast on the Mountain on Sunday from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pay close attention to the steep, narrow gravel roads and consider how challenging it was in the 1800’s for miners to get the supplies they needed and to get their gold into town. On Friday and Saturday, I urge you to participate in the 2nd Annual Historical Treasure Hunt on BMD’s Time Traveling Train. It’s a great way to learn more about our town’s colorful history by visiting our museums and unique landmarks while competing for cash prizes. If you need more local information, please visit the Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center in the Cottage Grove Community Center on Gibbs Avenue. Visitor information is also available at the Bohemia City information booths in Coiner Park. Jeff Gowing Cottage Grove Mayor

Continued from cover he name is George… I’m a hardworking, reliable and friendly muscle maniac. Most humans know me as a horse though. I’ve been doing my thing since 1858, and I’m one of the original horses to carry the mining prospectors to Bohemia. All my horse friends and their human keepers caught up with us shortly after Bohemia Johnson, James Ramsey, but since the summer of ’58 my crew of horses scavenge for territory, gold and anything else worth claiming. Each crew of muscle maniacs, keepers and their heavy loads are called “Freights.” I’ve worked for years as a muscle maniac; carrying tons of weight up and down the mountain. The giant metal “U” draped upside down over our backs aren’t too bad, considering we work as a team. On each side of the U is a hook that holds long poles. The metal U’s, hooks and poles aligned us. We walk in line with each other; one behind another. Dave, another horse on my team, usually walks in front of me and Frank walks behind me. In the space between us and on top of the two poles, is the perfect amount of space to carry the loads, which weigh as heavy as two tons. They

Their source of energy and fuel is different than ours. Our keepers eat meat from nearby towns and farms, and my cousin Max used to carry the meat on his freight pack. He worked with the Layng family. George and Carrie Layng who are popular for transporting beef to the mines for the workers. Sometimes miners would stay with Max’s keepers in exchange for gold. He transported meat for the Layng family – three day trips to and from the mines – for six years. Celebrate the animals of George, his cousin Max, and all the other hardworking families, like the Layng family, at this year’s four-day Bohemia Mining Days Festival! Enjoy food carts galore, amusement games and so much more. Home Free will even be performing on Friday, July 14 at 8 pm. Don’t forget about the legendary “feud” games that will take place too! The Slabtown vs. Lemati feud represents a time in history when Cottage Grove was divided in to two cities. The festival kicks off on July 13!

Cottage Theatre Melodrama 2:30 p.m.
Dr. Amnesia Trance’s Hypnotic Show OR It’s Mining Memories Down a Long, Dark Hole July 21 & 22 at 7:00 p.m. & July 23 at
Please note that, due to camp scheduling logistics, the 2017 melodrama will take place one week AFTER the Bohemia Mining Days Festival. It will return to the usual time during the Festival in 2018. This world premiere melodrama features youth actors from Cottage Theatre’s summer Melodrama Camp, plenty of booing and hissing at the villains, and an old-fashioned audience sing-along. Tickets $7 (all ages) More info at www.cottagetheatre.org Written by Keith Kessler Directed by Janet Rust Music Direction by Catricia Mayhue
Each July, Cottage Theatre produces a family-friendly original melodrama, the likes of which you'll not find on any other stage. The script, lovingly written especially for us by Cottage Grove playwright Keith Kessler, features roles for the 25 or so youth participants of CT’s Summer Music Camp. These young actors (ages 12 through 14), accomplish in two weeks what it takes an average adult cast eight to ten weeks to master: they go from auditions through dress rehearsals to present three public performances of a fully-staged production, complete with music and choreography. The show begins with several music and dance numbers that showcase our young performers. After that, the audience warms up with an old-fashioned sing-along and plenty of booing and hissing practice in time for the main event. This is a great show for families of all ages.
Come back next weekend to catch the Cottage Theatre Melodrama

The Feud Continues! Calling all the good people of Cottage Grove! It's time to pick your side in the fifth annual Slabtown vs Lemati Feud during the 2017 Bohemia Mining Days Festival, July 13-16. Pick a side and join in the fun! We've got a wide assortment of contests for all ages. Slabtowners were victorious the first year by a narrow margin. Lematians came roaring back in 2013 and 2014 to claim the Feud Rock Trophy. Last year it was the Slabtowners by another narrow margin! If you're a newcomer, this very old feud between two factions from Cottage Grove's earliest days in the 1890s was rekindled in a fun new way in 2012. If you live on the west side of the Coast Fork of the Willamette River, you are a Slabtowner. If you live on the east side of the river, you are a Lematian. If you're playing from out of the area, we recommend you pick Slabtown because it has a much smaller geographic area and population. the Two Towns Tug o' War, and the Cherry Pit Spittin' Contest. Get your fancy-dancy costumes ready for The Feud's Dress-Up.

Friday, July 14, from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, July 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Discover Cottage Grove – a gold mine of adventure! Calling all treasure hunters in search of cold, hard cash! Hop aboard the BMD Express (a trackless time traveling train) and chase clues leading you to historical places around town and discovering information about Cottage Grove’s unique and colorful past. All completed treasure maps will be entered into a daily drawing for $100 cash and a bonus $100 cash drawing at Sunday’s Closing Ceremony on the Main Stage at 1:15 p.m. Pick up your map and game instructions at the welcome booth at the Bohemia City train station (next to the Coiner Park bathroom building). hemia City train station to be entered into the cash drawings. Note: Treasure Hunters are not limited to taking the train to participate in the game and can follow clues in their own vehicles (or on foot since the area involved is much smaller than California’s Magic Kingdom). Did you know? In the summer of 1926, Buster Keaton used the Old Slow and Easy short line to film his movie, “The General. In 1986, the movie “Stand by Me was filmed along the OP&E railroad tracks next to Dorena Lake.

Cowboy Buck & Elizabeth bio
BMD welcomes back Buck and Elizabeth for their 17th year performing at the festival. Thursday through Sunday they will appear on both the Main Stage and the Heritage Stage with Buck serving as the Main Stage master of ceremonies. They are versatile performers from Castle Rock, Wash., who delight audiences of all ages. They put on a high energy show which includes interactive musical comedy with dance, sing-along and ventriloquism with Peter. Buck is a talented singer/songwriter and is a former member, manager and songwriter for the New Christy Minstrels. For a quarter of a century he has pursued his passion in "Education through Entertainment." From character voices to soulful blues Elizabeth is comfortable with Looney Tunes and Patsy Cline. Buck delights in bringing smiles to all around him and is never too busy to meet a new friend, sign an autograph, or teach you how to spin a rope. After performing for multi-generations at Bohemia Mining Days since 2001, they love spending time with their Cottage Grove fans. They perform year-round at fairs, festivals, schools and camps around the Northwest. Their music and their sparkling personalities are sure to charm audiences of all ages.
In 1939, Lane Electric began working in and protecting rural Lane County’s pristine and natural habitat... And, we’re still doing it today! “Whether wind, snow, rain, ice, heat or gloom of night, when your power goes out, so do we.” That was our promise then and it’s still our promise today!
Jay the Magician bio BMD welcomes back local magician Jay Frasier for his fifth appearance at the festival. This accomplished magician performs at schools, libraries, county fairs, and at personal and corporate events throughout the Pacific Northwest. He is best known for his engaging way of making magic funny, entertaining and interactive for all ages, through close-up magic or in stage shows. On Saturday, Jay performs on the Main Stage at 3:30 p.m. and will spend the day roaming around Bohemia City delighting and astonishing festival-goers with his close-up magic tricks. The dream of the carousel coming to CG has been in existence for 20 years by Judy Cash who purchased a 1929 Menagerie Carousel in Virginia. It has been in storage and has deteriorated, and faces a great deal of restoration, including the replacement of all the wooden structure, due to lead paint contamination. The vast majority of this work can be done by volunteers. Friends of the Carousel Committee have been in the fundraising mode for the past year. The monies we’ve had has went to primarily advertising, grant writer, the absolutely needed insurance. Other carousels throughout the west have been fortunate enough to have land donated by their cities or community leaders. This is our greatest need at the present time. In order to receive grants for a building fund, it is almost imperative that we have land that we can all our own. The committee has identified three sites in Cottage Grove that would be very suitable for the carousel. To restore the carousel, we need to update and improve the drive mechanism, brake mechanism, as well as dozens of light sockets and all new wiring. We need your financial help to make this dream come true for Cottage Grove. Presently, carousels and merry-go-rounds are very popular throughout the western United States. There are several brand new projects throughout the northwest as of this writing. Please see the form below and help make this dream come true for future generations. Contributions to Friends of the Cottage Grove Carousel, through EBID, are tax-exempt. We are in the process of applying for a 501(c)(3).
