20TH ANNUAL
Relay For Life
June 16-17, 2017, 6pm Bohemia Park
Open Invitation from Event Chair Sabina Johnson
Relay for Life celebrates its 32nd year since Dr. Gordy Klatt took his first steps on a Tacoma track in 1985 to raise public awareness of cancer and raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Over thirty years later, not only are communities coming together to further his cause but 24 countries around the globe have joined in the fight against cancer. In 1997, a group of dedicated volunteers started the Relay for Life of South Lane County. This year the Relay for Life of South Lane County celebrates a mile stone, 20 years of fighting back against cancer, remembering those lost, and celebrating those fighting. The Communities of Cottage Grove, Creswell, Dorena, Lorane, and surrounding areas are invited to experience Relay for Life at our new location, Bohemia Park on June 16th and 17th, 2017. On-site registration and gates open at 5pm on Friday, June 16th, and we encourage everyone to come take a look around and get signed up for some of the amazing events/activities that will be going on throughout the night. All cancer survivors, their caregivers, and the community are invited to attend and the “Opening Ceremonies starting at 6pm with the “Survivor and Caregiver Ceremonies and laps immediately following. This year our annual survivor luncheon was held at the Masonic Lodge on Saturday, May 20th, 2017. After many entertaining rounds of bingo, prizes were given and laughter was experienced, along with a simple yet satisfying display of food and desserts provided. The evening was a time for survivors and their caregivers to meet others that have had similar experiences in life. For the past 20 years Relay for Life of South Lane County has been a major community-wide experience that goes overnight. Cancer does not sleep, and for one night, Relayers will not sleep either. Or
at least the baton being passed from team member to team member throughout the night will not rest. Relay for Life is the Signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and is an opportunity for our communities to unite. At Relay we celebrate survivorship, remember those who have passed, and fight back against cancer. This year we have chosen a superhero theme, “The Hero Within for our event. Because a hero is not just someone you read about in a comic or see in the movies, a Hero can be anyone; a firefighter, police officer, cancer survivor, caregiver, your neighbor, or even a little girl raising money for another little girl to receive a wig so she will stop being teased. “The Hero Within is exactly that, anyone and everyone has the potential within them to be a hero. I believe our communities are full of heroes from every type and walk of life, and Relay for life is proof of that. Every dollar donated, every foot on that path, every awareness speech, or helping hand held out, is an unseen super power that has the ability to save and/ or change a life affected by cancer. Join us at Bohemia Park on Friday, June 16th, 5pm thru Saturday, June 17th, 10am, and find your “Hero Within at Relay for Life of South Lane County. A History of Relay For Life
ne person can make a difference. Nowhere is that more evident than with the story of Dr. Gordy Klatt and the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, which began in Tacoma, Washington, as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer.
of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.
In the mid-1980s, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, wanted to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society office. He decided to personally raise money for the fight against cancer by doing something he enjoyed—running marathons. In May 1985, Dr. Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma for more than 83 miles. Throughout the night, friends donated $25 to run or walk 30 minutes with him. He raised $27,000 to fight cancer. That first year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt’s friends, family and patients watched as he ran and walked the course.
What Happens at Relay For Life Events? Although every Relay For Life is different, there are certain traditions at all Relays, no matter where they are held. These traditions help participants celebrate, remember, and fight back. Celebrate – The Survivors Lap Relay starts with a Survivors Lap – a inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. The Survivors Lap is an emotional example of how Relay participants are ensuring that more lives are saved each year – like those of each individual on the track. We also recognize and celebrate caregivers at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer. At Relay, people understand the frustrations and joys of being a caregiver, since the effects of cancer reach far beyond just the person diagnosed.
Realy For Life Founder Dr. Gordy Klatt
While he circled the track those 24 hours, he thought about how others could take part. He envisioned a 24-hour team relay event that could raise more money to fight cancer. Months later he pulled together a small committee to plan the first team relay event known as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer. Gordy passed away August 3, 2014, at the age of 71 from heart failure after battling stomach cancer. But his legacy lives on. He helped shape an idea that started as one man walking and running a track and helped turn it into a global event raising over $5 billion to help save lives throughout the world. In 1986, 19 teams took part in the first team relay event on the track at the colorful, historical Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. An indescribable spirit prevailed at the track and in the tents that dotted the infield. The vision turned into over 5,200 Relay For Life events across the United States today and nearly $5 billion in fundraising to save lives from cancer. In addition, the American Cancer Society licenses 24 non-governmental cancer organizations in other countries to hold Relay For Life events to battle cancer across the globe. For 32 years, Relay For Life has provided inspiration and hope for millions of cancer survivors and caregivers. What is Relay For Life Today? The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives
Remember – The Luminaria Ceremony After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. As people take time to remember, those who have walked alongside others battling cancer can grieve and find healing. This is a time that truly highlights the importance of defeating this disease. Fight Back – The Fight Back Ceremony Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

RESEARCH AND YOU
American Cancer Society Saving Lives
Since the American Cancer Society research program was established in 1946, it has invested more than $4.3 billion in cancer research. As the nation’s largest private, not-for-profit source of funds for scientists studying cancer, the Society focuses its funding on investigator-initiated, peer-reviewed proposals. Scientists supported by the Society have made great contributions. For example, our support has helped: •
Establish the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer.
•
Prove the safety and effectiveness of mammograms.
•
Demonstrate the effectiveness of the Pap test in preventing and detecting cervical cancer at an early stage, decreasing deaths by more than 70 percent since the 1950s.
•
Prove the efficacy of lumpectomy plus radiation compared with mastectomy for some breast cancer.
•
Create hormonal therapy for prostate cancer.
•
Develop cancer-fighting drugs (5-FU) and biologic response modifiers (interferon).
•
Develop the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening test.
•
Dramatically increase the five-year survival rate for childhood leukemia to 84 percent.
•
Define the role of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) in tumor growth.
•
Develop monoclonal antibodies to treat lymphoma and breast cancer.
•
Define the structure of DNA, the genetic material.
•
•
Show the importance of estrogen receptors in breast cancer.
Discover cancer-causing genes and tumor suppressor genes.
•
Show the proficiency of the estrogen antagonist, tamoxifen, in preventing breast cancer recurrence and reducing incidence in high-risk women.
•
Discover breast and colon cancer susceptibility genes.
The success of the American Cancer Society research program is exemplified by the fact that 47 Society-funded researchers have received a Nobel Prize. LOCAL RESEARCH GRANTS -- January 31, 2017 72 GRANTS IN THE GREAT WEST DIVISION 752 Grants Nationwide 8 Grants in Oregon

What is the 1.800.ACS.2345 number all about?
The purpose of this toll free, 24/7/365, National Cancer Information Center (NCIC) is to increase cancer knowledge and empower patients and caregivers to participate in their decision making, communicate with their treatment team, and cope with issues that arise through their cancer journey. It’s not just providing information; NCIC’s Specialists help patients to know how to act on the information provided. NCIC’s Specialists can match callers to important resources and referrals to ACS Patient Programs based on a caller’s geographic region.
Why would I call this number?
NCIC Specialists empower patients and their caregivers to participate in decision making, communicate with their treatment team, and cope with issues that arise throughout their cancer experience. The following are all topics that our Specialists can discuss with patients and caregivers: o Questions around cancer diagnosis and treatment options o Prevention and Detection. Understanding screening recommendations, referrals to appropriate clinics, procedural clarifications, etc. o Stress issues- fear of death, communication with loved ones especially children of cancer patients, lack of decision making knowledge, long and short term side effects, inability to work, lack of insurance, financial devastation, etc. o Nutrition and Physical activity for the cancer patient o The lifetime journey including survivorship o Transportation and lodging during treatment o End of Life, what to expect, timelines, communication to others o Solitary patients who need day to day support o Knowledge and management of side effects, pain and medications Match callers to local and national resources, patient programs and referrals to ACS Patient Programs (Road to Recovery, Reach to Recovery, Look Good Feel Better, Hope Lodge, etc.) Get connected to a clinical trial: There are 152 clinical trials in Oregon alone, and many more across the country that might be a match for a patient’s unique situation. NCIC can help patients, their families, and health care workers find the most appropriate cancer clinical trial for the patient’s medical and personal situation. In addition, we identify and help remove barriers that prevent them from participating in clinical trials. The Health Insurance Assistance Service is available to assist patients with questions about their options and rights if they’re about to lose their insurance or already have lost their coverage, and share patient stories with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network to help improve advocacy efforts. Oncology and pediatric oncology nurses support cancer information specialists by assisting with more medically complex questions that help empower constituents by providing them with health information for potentially better patient outcomes. A friendly, supportive person to talk to. When your medical professional isn’t available, we are.

Light the path to a cure Luminarias are an opportunity to honor survivors, and remember those we’ve lost to cancer. When the luminarias lining the Lincoln Middle School track are lit at 10pm Friday night, it is a breathtaking sight. Each candle in each luminary is a light against the darkness. Each is a symbol of hope that a cure will be found for all cancers. A $5 donation per luminaria (white bag) goes to the American Cancer Society. Luminarias can be purchased throughout the day on Friday, June 16th at the Luminaria Tent on site at Relay For Life during the event.
The Luminaria Ceremony takes place 10pm Friday night at the stage and includes a beautiful ceremony. If you want to walk, make sure you’re registered at the registration desk before it closes Friday night. Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society.

Relay Field Day at Lincoln Middle School C
ottage Grove students have become more involved with the Relay for Life of South Lane County through Relay Field Day with great involvement from its students and staff. Lincoln Middle School continues to host a great Relay Field Day, and this year was no exception. Students held a school dance and a talent show in addition to the many fundraising activites both before and during their event. One of the newest highlights this year were Best Decorated Baton Best Team Costume, Best Team Name, Most popular booth and Most profitable booth. Students and parents alike had tons of fun getting their photos taken and making use of the many props Vicki had available for them to use. The video that was filmed in 2012 during Relay Field Day has been shown around the country and the world to communities that want to start their own Relay Field Days. Relay for Life of South Lane County is so very proud of the Students and Staff for all they have done and continue to do in raising funds and awareness in South Lane County. The Relay Field Day participants were once again shooting for their goal of $2400 and they met their goal. JOIN THE LARGEST WORLDWIDE MOVEMENT TO END CANCER ACS knows that while money needs to stay in our community to help local patients, it also needs to fight cancer globally, for maximum lifesaving. Here is how. •
Research: ACS is the largest private funder of cancer research in the world. The only public source that funds more is the federal government. ACS has invested over $3.4 billion in cancer research. Each year in Oregon, between $4-6 million is allocated to research universities and hospitals like University Of Oregon, Oregon Health and Sciences University, Oregon State University, Providence Portland, etc.
•
Prevention: We work with major school systems, employers and insurance companies to help prevent cancer by helping people quit smoking, keeping our children healthier and our employees screened, and keeping it all affordable. Coordinating with schools and parents on Relay Recesses and Field Days. ACS has also executed 3 of the largest largest Cancer Prevention Studies of its kind.
•
Cancer Prevention Studies 1,2&3: ACS has executed 3 of the largest studies on cancer prevention if its kind. The 1st one discovered that smoking and tobacco causes cancer. The 2nd one linked obesity/nutrition/exercise to cancer What will the 3rd one find? We just wrapped up data capture in December 2013 and it’s being currently analyzed.
1. 2. 3.
•
Community/State Crisis Programs-post natural disaster/crisis (flood, hurricane, etc): In the midst of a natural disaster, we identify and remove cancer patients from shelters, so they can continue cancer treatment in medical facilities.
•
Advocacy: We have ACS Staff and volunteers working on state and federal levels to keep and change life-saving, cancer fighting laws, like the tobacco control initiative, including smoke free states and workplaces.
•
Clinical Trial Matching Service: Our hotline is the only that can connect cancer patients with clinical trials that might save their lives. There are currently 152 active clinical trials in Oregon alone!
•
Cancer Screening Guidelines-When ACS identifies a screening guideline or recommendation, it is implemented Nationwide in all major hospitals and medical centers, and is acknowledged at the baseline for insurance companies.
