The history of modern charity The concept of well-to-do people helping the less fortunate is nothing new. In fact, charity has been a part of human cultures for thousands of years. Charity is a humanitarian act to give to those in need. The word “charity” is derived from the Latin “caritas,” which means “preciousness, dearness and high price.” Charity is also tied to philanthropy, a word from the Greek “philanthropia,” meaning “love of mankind.” Charitable philanthropy has evolved to refer to the various forms of kindness directed toward others. It is believed that charitable giving in some form has been around since 2500 BCE, when ancient Hebrews instituted a tax intended to help the poor. Philanthropy became a pillar upon which many religious organizations were built. Many charities were formed to provide basic necessities to others. Charitable giving has been documented in nearly all cultures in some shape or form. According to the National Philanthropic Trust, classical Chinese philosophy exalted the virtue of benevolence. Ancient Greeks considered giving fundamental to democracy. Philanthropy was thought to promote balance and harmony among Native Americans. Moses Maimonides, a 12th century rabbi and philosopher, helped shape modern philanthropy by establishing the Golden Ladder of Charity in the Mishneh Torah. Maimonides’ eight levels of charitable giving ascend accordingly in value. They rank from giving grudgingly as the very least form of charity to helping to sustain a person before he or she becomes impoverished as the greatest. Maimonides’ teachings helped shape future notions of giving. Philanthropy has changed throughout history. Plato established a group working for the public good. Roman Emperor Augustus gave public aid to 200,000 people. In 1643, the first American fundraising drive was organized by Harvard University. Today, the value of donations to charity comprise roughly 2 percent of the total national gross domestic product in the United States. The charitable giving resource Winspire says more than 95 percent of households in the United States donate to charity. Charitable giving continues to grow, with new philanthropic groups being established every year. Giving has become a major component of modern culture and an important part of shaping individuals, families and communities.

5 fun fundraising ideas Charity comes in many forms, including fundraising. Organizations and individuals alike raise money for important causes every day. The money raised during successful fundraising campaigns can be used to help charities meet their missions, assist the sick in paying their medical bills and help vulnerable communities become safe places for people to live. Organizing fundraisers is hard work, but it also can be fun. The following are five fun ways to raise funds for a good cause. 1. Fun Run Fun runs can be great ways to raise money because they provide something enjoyable for people to do as they promote a worthy cause. A fun run typically asks participants, who may run, walk or cycle a predetermined distance in support of a charity, to seek donations from friends, family, neighbors, or acquaintances. Participants often set goals to raise “X” amount of dollars, and many people do the run in groups, giving them a great chance to get together with family and like-minded do-gooders. 2. Bowling Night A bowling night is another fun way to raise funds. Participants will ask donors to pledge a certain amount per pin they knock down. Organizers can contact a local bowling alley to see if they can get a discounted rate on lanes and shoe rentals. Many bowling alleys welcome such events, and participants tend to enjoy bowling for a worthy cause.

3. Garage Sale A garage sale can be a great way to raise funds. Organizers can encourage members of their community to bring some unused items from their homes to a central location, such as a church or school parking lot, where the items will be arranged on tables and sold. Donors might welcome the chance to clear their homes of some clutter, and buyers may enjoy bartering for knickknacks. If possible, arrange for a barbecue the day of the garage sale so community members are encouraged to come out and stick around to have a good time and a bite to eat. 4. Casino Night A community casino night can entice card players and people who enjoy games of chance to come out and support a good cause. Host games like roulette and poker, providing participants with chips in exchange for donations to your cause. At the end of the night, allow players to cash in their chips for prizes donated by local vendors. 5. Bar Crawl This one is obviously exclusive to adults who are of legal drinking age, but it can be a great way to support a good cause and promote local businesses at the same time. In this type of fundraiser, local bars and restaurants that sponsor the bar crawl may offer discounted beverages to participants who receive bracelets in exchange for charitable donations. Some establishments may even split the night’s participant proceeds with the charity the event is designed to support.

Budgeting for charity ultimately pays

It’s important to remember our neighbors struggling to provide their families with enough food to eat. In Cottage Grove and the surrounding areas, lower income families can find help at Community Sharing Program. Community Sharing is a local non-profit that provides community members basic needs, life-skill tools and resources towards self-sufficiency. Each month an average of 747 emergency food boxes are distributed by Community Sharing’s pantry. Emergency food boxes are meant to supplement SNAP assistance (previously called food stamps) with a 3-5 day supply of food. As a partner agency, Community Sharing gets over half of its food from the county’s food bank, Food for Lane County. The rest is donated by local individuals, organizations and businesses. Historically the need for emergency food in the fall and winter is significantly higher than in the spring and summer. Last summer the pantry filled 868 food boxes distributed in just one month. In addition to the increased number of our neighbors facing food insecurity, the typical forecast from Food for Lane County shows food distribution to pantries will be lower for the better part of the fiscal year. That means local food donations are critical, now more than ever, to meet the basic needs of an ever increasing number of eligible families. In addition to food, Community Sharing accepts donations of essential nonfood items, such as hygiene items, clothes, and cleaning supplies to provide to its client families. These items aren’t covered by SNAP assistance, but clothes, toilet paper, diapers and soaps are almost as vital for day-to-day living as food. Please donate to Community Sharing this holiday season so that our clients don’t have to make the tough choices they face nearly every day. Many have to choose between buying their prescription medication on or buying food. Still others must choose between paying for their utility bill or buying food. With your help, this holiday season can be a little less stressful for those in need. Fact: Did you know that Community Sharing can access and distribute 65 lbs. of food for every dollar donated? It’s true! From our food bank in Eugene, Food for Lane County, we pay for food at a very deep discount. For this reason, your donated dollar goes much farther than any canned product donation. In order to distribute the food, keep the lights on, maintain refrigeration and freezing for perishables, costs $$$. Fact: Although we are able to buy food at a deep discount from Food for Lane County, on occasion they do not offer the food we need.

According to data from Charity Navigator and Giving USA, slightly more than $410 billion was given to charitable causes in 2017. Philanthropy helps nonprofit groups and the people they serve, and such charitable efforts also benefit donors. Perhaps the greatest benefit of charitable giving is helping others and the way that makes volunteers and donors feel. But there is also a financial benefit to charitable giving. Charitable donations are often tax deductible, and budgeting for such donations can teach people how to properly manage their money. Donors who want to make the most of their charitable dollars can consider the following tips. • Stick to one or two causes. Being a “giver” doesn’t mean you have to contribute to every cause that draws your attention. It is important to believe in the cause you’re donating to and that the message and efforts resonate with your values. This way you can focus your attention directly, and it will not seem like a financial burden. That might require you to narrow your donations down to one or two causes. • Treat charitable giving as any other monthly bill. Look at giving to charity as a necessity rather than a luxury. Create a recurring “bill” that you pay each month and factor it into your overall spending budget. Some charities may even be able to arrange for automatic deductions from your bank account. • Set up a specific savings account. Much like you might create a separate account for a Christmas club or vacation savings, create an exclusive account for charitable endeavors. Over time, that account balance will grow and the money can be used for whichever causes you deem fit. • Donate what you can. You need not donate hundreds of dollars to make a huge difference. Organizations can benefit greatly from small donations. Do not avoid donating because you think your donations are too small to make a difference. • Find out if your company will match. Ask your employer to match your donations. Even if they decline, drawing attention to a cause may inspire your bosses and coworkers to donate. Nonprofits benefit greatly from word-of-mouth. Simply talking up a charity to others can make a big impact.
