Culture and class Preserving History

A piece of the Titanic in Cottage Grove Coat worn by passenger of ill-fated ship continues to tell its story

A

rusty coat in the Cottage Grove museum would be passed unnoticed by anyone who made a trip there. The story of a 26 year old English woman who survived the Titanic accident is written in this rusty coat in our museum. In the 19th century, people traveled on sailing ships that carried cargos of mixed goods. Transporting people and goods across the Atlantic was a very lucrative business. Great profits were earned by shipping companies that vented in this trade. The Titanic was built by the White Star line and began its journey in Southampton, England, and then sailed to Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown, Ireland (now known as Cobh). It sped west toward New York on April 10, 1912. It was carrying a total of 1,316 passengers and 885 crew members, according to the Encyclopedia Titanica. The people were a mixture of wealthy individuals as well as immigrants from Ireland, Germany and elsewhere. Of the 2,224 people on board, 1,514 lost their lives, while 710 survived. First-class passengers fared much better than those in third class. For example, only three percent of first-class women died, whereas 54 percent of third class women perished. Marion Wright was a 26 year old English woman among the 710 survivors of the Titanic. She was travelling to New York to meet with her fiancé Arthur Woolcott. Interestingly, after her rescue, Marion headed to Cottage Grove to look for her fiancé Arthur Woolcott who even though knew she had survived the accident, wasn’t expecting to see her soon assuming that she would be in hospital for awhile. They got married on April 20th, only five days after the accident, had three sons and lived in Cottage Grove until their death. Marion remained a hero just like other hundreds of Titanic survivors. She wrote several letters to her family back in England from this city telling them how the people around her were good to her. In one of her letters dated Monday, May 12, 1912, Marion tells her mom how the people in the town and neighborhood gave her a public reception and presented her with an aluminum chain purse with about $20 in it telling her that this was to make up for part of her loses in the Titanic suffering. She goes ahead to say that about 100 people went to her house from just around the neighborhood again to welcome her. All this was happening here, in Cottage Grove. The Titanic story is a story that has been told for generations and generations and here in Cottage Grove, the story of the Titanic is more close to home because in our museum, we have a coat worn by Marion inside the Titanic on that fateful day. Marion’s coat is reserved and available for public viewing. However, there is a missing piece of fabric that she cut off and used to make the covers of the New Testament Bible that she sent to her three sons during World War II believing that the same God who By Gordon Okumu

rescued her when she was wearing this coat would rescue her sons from the war and bring them back home safe. They all did come back home safe from the war. Her eldest son recalled that the coat also served as a blanket on his bed during extra cold spells when he was growing up. When it was built, the Titanic was the largest moving human-made object in the world. It had many new features, including remotely sealable compartments that led to it being deemed “unsinkable.” Unfortunately, it was not. Some of the Titanic’s passengers were prominent people, including John Jacob Astor IV, one of the wealthiest men in the world at that time. So were Ida and Isidor Straus, who were the co-owners of Macy’s department store. And of course, there was “Unsinkable” Molly Brown, a socialite who became famous when she exhorted her lifeboat to return to look for survivors, and ultimately survived the ordeal herself. With several historic sites in this city, most people are not aware about the fascinating history surrounding us. It’s not just history about the community, some history is so gigantic and well-known around the world, it may be overlooked right here in Cottage Grove.

Marion Wright’s letters, above, remain at the museum.

Cottage Theatre

Cottage Theatre opened its 2017 season with “Peter and the Starcatcher” in February to rave reviews and delighted fans.

C

ottage Theatre has a reputation as one of Lane County’s finest community theatres. Now in its 34th season, Cottage Theatre performs to audiences of more than 11,000 people in over 75 public performances annually. The theatre’s current facility, which was built with community support in 1998 and expanded in 2006, is the only community theatre facility in Lane County that was custom-built as a theatre rather than being remodeled from some other use. Part of the mission of the theatre is to provide a creative outlet for community members. Cottage Theatre actors, directors, designers and crewmembers are all local volunteers with a passion for theatre. New volunteers are always welcome. Nearly every position in the theatre is filled by a volunteer including lights and costumes, which have been known to draw the attention of residents and visitors alike. While it’s not often believed, the costumes that the theatre’s actors don during the shows are often made of curtains, placemats and other thrift store finds. Volunteer Rhonda Turnquist sews for the majority of the day, six days a week for up to five weeks to create the pieces from each show, spanning the decades and sometimes, the imagination. Cottage Theatre currently produces a year-round main season of six productions annually. The 2017 season opened with “Peter and the

The infamous show “Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” follows in the fall, Oct. 6-29. Cottage Theatre’s 2017 season closes with a family-friendly whimsical play: “Suessical” (Dec. 1–23) a take on the classic world of Dr. Suess. In addition to its main season, Cottage Theatre offers camps for youth ages 5 to 14 each summer. SKIT Camp, which will be held June 26-30 this year, is a week-long morning day camp especially for young actors ages 5-8. The camp includes instruction in acting, singing and dance and culminates in an informal performance for families. From July 10–July 21, Cottage Theatre will host its 10th annual Melodrama Camp, a performance camp for actors 9-14. Melodrama Camp culminates in three public performances of an original melodrama. Cottage Theatre is located at 700 Village Drive in Cottage Grove, just across the street from the hospital. For more information about becoming involved, or for a current show schedule, visit www.cottagetheatre.org or call the theatre box office at (541) 942-8001.

‘Animal House’ prop finds a home in Cottage Grove By Sam Wright On July 28, 1978, the infamous Delta House took over the big screens across the country. Animal House, The National Lampoon Magazine’s spinoff about an unruly and rowdy fraternity became a comedy classic after initially receiving mixed reviews in 1978. The movie holds special significance in Lane County as it was the location for the majority of the filming. The University of Oregon was used as the setting for “Faber” College and the Delta House stood where there is now Northwest Christian University’s School of Education and Counseling is in Eugene. Although approximately 20 miles south of Eugene, Cottage Grove was still a part of the historic movie. The concluding scene of the parade was filmed on Main Street in the town’s historic downtown district and has become a unifying historical moment within the community. The Death Mobile, which was used to sabotage and wreak havoc during the parade, is an artifact in which the Cottage Grove community has made a lot of effort to keep it in town. Unfortunately, this is only a replica. The original car—a 1962 Lincoln Continental—was destroyed after filming. But Cottage Grove has kept the spirit of the car alive in its own way. In 2003, a group of locals from the Cottage Grove Historical Society wanted to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the filming of Animal House. The enthusiasts called themselves the Hysterical Society and set out to create the world’s largest toga party and bring back the chaos and fun of the parade scene back to life. At the time, the party was billed as “the world’s largest toga party” and Grovers found themselves in the Guiness Book of World Records. The record has since been broken. In 2004, a local by the name of Tom Weaks constructed his own death mobile out of a 1964 Lincoln Continental and he entered it in the second annual Animal House Parade. The car was built without a motor transmission, so Weaks towed the Deathmobile, which got huge praise from the crowd. The Hysterical Society encouraged Weaks to completely finish the car in time for the 2005 parade. With help from mechanic Herb Hill, Weaks managed to bring the car to life. Soon after the third annual parade, however, Weaks was transferred to Tennessee for work, but knowing how much Cottage Grove would miss the Death Mobile, Weaks decided to sell it to other locals who stepped up financially to ensure that the iconic vehicle would stay in Cottage Grove. At the time, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Linda Smalley and her husband, Roger, chipped in to buy the car from Weaks with the help of Mike Grant. Executive Director of Cottage Grove’s Chamber of Commerce Travis Palmer saw an opportunity when Schmale made plans to sell her house and move to Arizona in December of 2014. “No one really wanted it at their house, but the chamber wanted to make sure the vehicle would stay in Cottage Grove,” Palmer said. “We want to make it more seen. It’s a great piece of Cottage Grove history that people rarely get to see,” Palmer said prior to purchasing the car. Palmer needed $5,000 to reach his goal, and local fans of the movie all pitched in to help.

A replica of the Death Mobile from the film “Animal House” is owned by the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce. “I really have to credit the [CGHS] class of 1978, they were definitely the biggest contributors,” Palmer said. Many members of that graduating class served as extras in the film and they have stayed close largely because of the movie. “We want to find a secure, indoor location so that everyone can come see it,” Palmer said. The car has been on display in several public events, including the Bohemia Mining Days parade. Next year will mark the 40th anniversary of Animal House. Palmer and the chamber want to throw a big gathering for the occasion and then follow up by doing parties every five years or so.

Wineries: Among the state’s finest

F

or decades South Lane County has been known for its beautiful scenery and recreational opportunities. The rivers and lakes have long attracted visitors. But in recent years, South Lane County has added a new attraction: wineries. The Willamette Valley, with its rich topsoil and mild weather, is a great place for vineyards. In recent years several growers have planted hundreds of acres of grapes — pinots are a favorite — and their efforts have paid off. Many wineries have added tasting rooms that allow visitors to sample their products, and one can easily visit several in a day. A suggested route is to start with Saginaw Vineyard, approximately two miles north of Cottage Grove. It is located on Delight Valley School Road, off Saginaw East Road, and can be accessed either from Interstate 5 (Exit 176) or Highway 99. From there one can return to Cottage Grove and drive through town on Main Street to Lorane Road, then continue westward to Territorial Highway. Chateau Lorane, King Estate and Silvan Ridge-Hinman Vineyards can be accessed from Territorial. Sweet Cheeks Winery is another welcome stop on the route. The Umpqua Valley south of Cottage Grove also produces fine wines of many varietals, with wineries in Elkton greeting travelers on Highway 38 and award-winning vineyards such as Henry Estate and Abacela further south. A word of caution: Having a designated driver is suggested. Many of these wineries are accessed by narrow, winding roads, and driving under the influence (.08 in Oregon) is illegal.

The Umpqua region produces high-quality wines that have begun to garner international attention to wineries like Ruestle Prayer Rock Vineyard.

Covered Bridge Capital of Oregon Centennial Bridge This bridge was constructed in 1987 by volunteer labor to celebrate Cottage Grove’s centennial. It rests on abutments of the old Main Street Bridge, which stood until the 1950s. Swinging Bridge Located a half-mile upstream from Centennial Bridge, Swinging Bridge was built for foot and bicycle traffic and was mostly used by children crossing the Coast Fork to get to school. Chambers Railroad Bridge Built in 1925 by lumberman J.H. Chambers to cross the Coast Fork of the Willamette River from his sawmill to the timberlands west of town, this is the only covered railroad bridge west of the Mississippi River. Restored in 2011. Mosby Creek Bridge Constructed in 1920 and restored in 1990, this is the oldest bridge in Lane County. Its one lane remains open to traffic today.

Stewart Bridge Constructed in 1930 and restored in 1996, this structure has semi-circular portal arches, ribbon openings at the eaves, and decorative S-curve brackets. The deep water below the bridge is considered one of the best swimming holes in the county. Dorena Bridge Constructed in 1949 and restored in 1996, this bridge was built after the construction of Dorena Dam on the Row River, forming the present day lake. The Dorena Bridge once tied the roads on the north and south sides of the lake. Closed to traffic, the bridge is a popular wedding site. Currin Bridge Constructed in 1925 and restored in 1995, this bridge features white portals and red sides. Currin Bridge replaced an earlier covered bridge built in 1883 by a prominent local bridge builder, Nels Roney.

A stroll around Cottage Grove just isn’t complete without a walk over the Centennial Bridge, constructed in 1987.

The Currin Bridge and its counterparts are one of the most frequently cited reasons for a visit to Cottage Grove by out-of-towners.

History and its stewards Bridging the past and future Cottage Grove history

T

he Kalapuya Indians called the southern Willamette Valley and northern Douglas County home, though their numbers quickly diminished as some left the area to avoid the white setters who began arriving here in 1848. Disease and a move to reservations reduced local Kalapuya populations, and Sam Fern, the last fullblooded Kalapuya, passed away Sept. 4, 1919. Many early settlers traveled to Cottage Grove on the Applegate Trail, which left the Oregon Trail in Idaho, crossed Nevada and came into southern Oregon over the Cascade Mountains. Other settlers followed the northern route down the

Columbia River to Oregon City and then traveled south through the Willamette Valley to Lane County. The Donation Land Claim Act brought more Americans to seek a life in Oregon. James Chapin came to the Willamette Valley from the west, crossing the Coast Range after his ship floundered off the Oregon Coast. He settled south of Cottage Grove in 1865. A cottage owned by Greenbery C. Pearce was home to the first post office in 1855. It was located in an oak grove near Creswell — hence the name Cottage Grove. After the railroad arrived in 1872, a feud broke out

between west siders and those east of the river in the town of Lemati over which side of the river the post office would occupy. Over time, homes and businesses filled in between the two settlements and they became known as Cottage Grove. Travel by horseback and wagons gave way to the railroad until the Pacific Highway was constructed at the site of present-day River Road. Later, Highway 99 became the main north-south route on the Pacific Coast. In 1957, Interstate 5 opened on the east side of the city. Agriculture and timber have been among the town’s major industries from its earliest days, and after World War II, mills in the area

expanded as a building boom drove the nation’s economy. Mining was also a means for early residents to fill their purses. As early as 1863 gold was discovered in the Bohemia Mountains (so named for one of its early miners, James “Bohemia” Johnson). Bohemia City was founded in 1866 and mining began in earnest in the 1890s, bringing an influx of businesses into Cottage Grove. Flooding was a common problem in Cottage Grove until the 1940s, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed Cottage Grove Reservoir on the Coast Fork and Dorena Reservoir on Row River.

oday, a snapshot of the area’s history is displayed at the Cottage Grove Museum, located at H Street and Birch Avenue in an octagonal building that once was home to the Catholic Church. The Cottage Grove Historical Library, located at the corner of 10th and Jefferson Streets, also contains much information about businesses, buildings, churches and schools that pertains to the development of the area. Residents and business people have worked to preserve the flavor of the community by preserving many historic buildings and adding murals, creating a bridge between yesterday and today. PeaceHealth, Cottage Grove come together Community helps raise thousands for new mammography machine, improving local services

By Caitlyn May

T

he PeaceHealth Cottage Grove Community Medical Center serves the local community as part of the broader PeaceHealth family. The organization, based in Washington, is a not-for-profit Catholic health system which offers services in Oregon, Washington and Alaska. Company-wide, PeaceHealth employs over 15,000 individuals and locally, the medical center provides residents an accessible alternative to Eugene clinics located 30 minutes away from Cottage Grove. Recently, the community joined forces with the hospital and its foundation to bring a new 3-D mammography machine to the community. Previously, residents were traveling to Eugene or left to contend with a machine in Cottage Grove that was quickly becoming obsolete. When Cottage Grove first obtained its mammography machine, it was the first in the community to have the newest technology. However, due to changes in technology and the medical field overall, 3-D became the must have component to the machine.

Coinciding with the technological change, the local hospital was informed that its current mammography machine would soon be unable to be serviced due to changes in technology and updates to medical equipment. After raising several thousand dollars within the community, the foundation was able to obtain a grant; but not before the original goal of raising $400,000 was set. When the call went out to the community of Cottage Grove, the city answered with several $10,000 donations coming in and eventually totaling $70,000 raised locally. After the community illustrated its desire for the machine and a grant request was submitted, the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust awarded up to $137,000 in November, clearing the way for the new machine to arrive in the first months of 2017. Cottage Grove raised $70,000 locally for the purchase of a new mammography machine, set to replace the machine shown at left, in early 2017.

Cottage Grove invests in education New school will house more than 600 students

I

n 2018, Cottage Grove students will file into a brand new elementary school designed to hold over 600 children and encourage an interest in arts, music and overall education. The new school, dubbed Harrison Elementary, will begin construction at the back-end of 2017 after tax payers approved a bond in November. While height variance requirements stalled the planning process in early January, the Cottage Grove Planning Commission has approved the conditional use permits for the building and is working closely with the city and school district to complete the project. Harrison Elementary will sit in the place of the old Cottage Grove High

School which was demolished 13 years ago, leaving behind the community swimming pool and a utility building for early childhood education. Once the school is completed, it will stand over 40 feet tall at its highest point and require several upgrades to the surrounding neighborhood including a change in parking, sidewalk construction and other landscaping. South Lane School District Superintendant Krista Parent said of the project, “This school is going to be a community show-piece that truly honors the history and heritage of Cottage Grove while educating thousands of elementary school students. The community’s investment will pay dividends in student learning for years to come.”

South Lane Wheels keeps the city moving

I

n the span of a year, South Lane Wheels has provided 17,300 oneway rides, providing a needed service and offering the community a way around town. The organization was founded in 1982 as a non-profit with a mission to provide safe, accessible and financially feasible services for residents who needed transportation around the city and as far away as Eugene. “For 33 years,” the organization says, “we have provided thousands of individuals rides to doctor appointments, shopping, restaurants, residences, nutrition sites, recreation, workplaces, school and special events.” South Lane offers several services including door-to-door and medical transportation. Its standard service, the “route around town,” provides residents and visitors an accessible transportation option throughout the city. The route serves several Cottage Grove landmarks including the Village Shopping Center, Lane Community College, Cottage Grove High School, Riverview Terrance, Cottage Grove Rodeo and Fair Grounds, Walmart, Bi-Mart, PeaceHealth Cottage Grove Medical Center and Cottage Grove Living Center. Drivers are permitted to travel up to 3/4 mile off the noted route. South Lane Wheels stresses that its services have no age restriction or income requirement. All residents and visitors are welcome to ride the route, utilize door-to-door and medical ride services.

Cycle Oregon comes to Cottage Grove

B

etween 1,500 and 2,400 cyclists will be headed towards Cottage Grove this SepBy Caitlyn May tember as part of Cycle Oregon’s 30th anniversary, 2017 route. The current plan has cyclists camping at Schwarz Park rather than Bohemia Park but according to local officials, Cottage Grove will still feel the impact of the event. “This isn’t going to be 1,000 tents in Cottage Grove,” said Travis Palmer, executive director of the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce. However, Palmer noted that the ride leading to Cottage Grove was mostly slated to be down-hill; a fact he hopes contributes to the group’s ability to engage in local tourism. “We’re hoping they have the energy to go out and do some shopping,” he said. Cycle Oregon routinely includes a “day stop” that allows riders offtime. This year, they’ll be spending that day at Diamond Lake, giving riders the opportunity to experience Crater Lake. However, local efforts are being made to bring the group into town. According to Cottage Grove City Manager Richard Meyers, the city is looking into arranging a shuttle service. “We will feel the impact,” he said. “We’ll see the hotel room stays increase because some of these cyclists, when they have the opportunity for a real bed and a real shower rather than showering in the semi shower, they’re going to take it.” The group is expected to come to town with three to four semi-trucks which will have their luggage unloaded by local clubs and volunteers. While those groups are expected to benefit, local businesses will be at the 38 •

mercy of riders coming into town. “It’s actually better that they’re out there,” Meyers said of the Schwarz location. In the past, the event utilized the area the city is currently using to construct the new Harrison Middle School, leaving little room for campers. Meyers also said he was confident that the shuttles would aid in bringing cyclists in. This year’s trip will mark the third time the event has come to Cottage Grove. The first was in 2008 and the second in 2011.

The graphic above shows the portion of Cycle Oregon that will pass through the Cottage Grove Area.
